0:09:46 > 0:09:51- They are very attractive - - a sort of haven for their workers.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48- They're demanding that the State - recognizes the land as theirs.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52- They also want to highlight the fact - that they are being left behind.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02- ..nothing has changed - in the last 60 years.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21- ..these natural canals have provided - a living for farmers and fishermen.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31- But, here too, the people - want to join the new India.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37- These boats don't transport - rice any more - but tourists.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45- Tourists from all over the world - use these famous houseboats...

0:12:45 > 0:12:47- ..to explore the area's wonders.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56- Kerala also attracts visitors...

0:12:56 > 0:13:00- ..who seek specialized treatments - for their health problems.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04- These treatments - have been around for centuries.

0:13:35 > 0:13:40- After travelling through India, I - thought I deserved treatment, too.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45- But it was just - in the name of research, of course.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49- I was eager to meet someone - who profits from these ancient ways.

0:13:54 > 0:13:58- Biji Rajan's craft was handed down - to her through the generations.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02- She's the first woman - to earn a living from doing it.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- Until fairly recently, - girls couldn't go out to work.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10- We were considered inferior.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13- By now, of course, - we get more respect.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20- Biji is extremely proud of her job.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25- But she's aware of the huge divide - between her and her customers.

0:14:28 > 0:14:32- The hotel residents spend my month's - earnings on a single meal.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36- But there you go. - I try not to think about it.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43- But to Biji, - there's a far higher price to pay.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49- As we walked around - the 5-star hotel...

0:14:49 > 0:14:53- ..Biji explained that her home - is a 2-hour journey from work.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57- For the past six years, she's only - seen her family twice a month.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06- They need their mother every day.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10- But they realize I have to work - so that they can go to school.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23- But there is a high price to pay.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33- The literacy levels of Kerala - are amongst the highest in India...

0:15:33 > 0:15:37- ..because of the emphasis - they've put on education.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42- Biji and her family - worship in the Mookambika temple.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44- The priest makes literacy - accessible to children.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49- He draws shapes of letters on - their tongues and on plates of rice.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00- But perhaps Biji's family needs - more than God's intervention.

0:16:01 > 0:16:05- Her daughter wants to be a lawyer - Her son would like to work in IT.

0:16:06 > 0:16:11- It'll be quite an achievement since - they can't even afford a computer.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31- They can have better opportunities - than I had and move up the ladder.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01- ..the polarization - between the rich and poor...

0:17:02 > 0:17:04- ..is very difficult - to get used to...

0:17:04 > 0:17:08- ..especially when faced with - extreme poverty on a daily basis.

0:17:09 > 0:17:14- It's impossible to describe India - if you haven't been here.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19- Because of her size, and also - because everything is side by side.

0:17:20 > 0:17:24- The rich and poor, businesses - and slums are in close proximity.

0:17:25 > 0:17:30- I'm not talking about within a mile, - but literally next door. Amazing.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50- ..I couldn't ignore the fact - the country is full of contrasts.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27- I enjoyed the warm welcome in the - chapel where Taid was a minister...

0:21:31 > 0:21:35- I was amazed by the wealth - in Delhi's new shopping centres.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41- But I can't help thinking about all - the people who live in poverty...

0:21:47 > 0:21:50- Despite her problems, - this is a unique country.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53- She's also a feast for the senses.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03- It's obvious to me that things - have to change from within India.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07- The only people who can make that - change happen is her own people.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25- It's impossible to reach a neat - conclusion about India's future.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34- In some places, with alarming speed. - In other places, torturously slow.
