0:00:24 > 0:00:26- My father was a tolls officer - at the time.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30- We moved to Holyhead - because of his job...

0:00:37 > 0:00:40- I moved to England to work - for a few years.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44- Then I moved back to Wales - and worked in Cardiff...

0:00:47 > 0:00:51- In the late 1970s, - I joined South Wales Police.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56- When I got to the end - of my police career...

0:00:56 > 0:01:02- ..I decided - I'd like to try and find ways...

0:01:06 > 0:01:07- ..after retiring.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11- I wondered what I could do - with the skills I had.

0:01:13 > 0:01:18- ..and found there was a guild - of professional toastmasters.- - www.guildoftoastmasters.co.uk/

0:01:19 > 0:01:25- I went on a course and that's how - I became a toastmaster.

0:01:25 > 0:01:30- As a policeman, people didn't always - look forward to seeing you arrive.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33- But, as a toastmaster, - you're always welcome.

0:01:41 > 0:01:47- I think the red coat suggests - that it's something ceremonial.

0:01:47 > 0:01:52- But, to be honest, there is more - organizing work to be done...

0:01:54 > 0:01:58- Most of my work is at weddings.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02- There is quite a lot of scope...

0:02:03 > 0:02:06- ..for things to go wrong - on a wedding day.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10- But my job is to make sure - that everything runs smoothly...

0:02:13 > 0:02:17- I got a phone call - from someone at the Assembly...

0:02:17 > 0:02:20- ..asking if I was available - to be the toastmaster...

0:02:21 > 0:02:26- ..at the opening of the Assembly - in Cardiff last June.

0:02:26 > 0:02:31- An opportunity like that only comes - along about once every five years.

0:02:31 > 0:02:36- I was lucky because there - is no other toastmaster in Wales...

0:02:36 > 0:02:40- ..who advertises himself - as being able to work in Welsh.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44- Historically, - toastmasters are not a Welsh thing.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47- They're an English tradition...

0:02:48 > 0:02:50- ..and people see them - in that way.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53- But I'm trying - to change people's minds...

0:02:53 > 0:02:56- ..and make them - see toastmasters as organizers...

0:02:57 > 0:02:59- ..rather than as ceremonial figures.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10- They decided to use me - during the ceremony itself.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15- I had to announce the arrival - of the Queen and the Royal Family.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19- It was very interesting work.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23- Once you've succeeded in doing - something of that magnitude...

0:03:24 > 0:03:28- ..other things come very easily.
