0:16:19 > 0:16:20he's a great guy to hang out.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22He always has a great story to tell.
0:16:22 > 0:16:28He's an overall motivation for me, like a mentor, I'd say.
0:16:28 > 0:16:32It's a few days before Christmas and Tom is with Nic in Nazare.
0:16:33 > 0:16:36Over the holiday, Tom is planning to surf
0:16:36 > 0:16:38the kind of big waves he dreams about.
0:16:40 > 0:16:44For the last three or four years, it's been just THE spot in
0:16:44 > 0:16:48Europe to go and just tow into huge waves.
0:16:48 > 0:16:52That place, it gets ginormous all the time.
0:16:52 > 0:16:54It's a wild place to surf.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57The surf so far today has been challenging.
0:16:58 > 0:17:00I was into a little bit of a flow.
0:17:00 > 0:17:01I had wiped out on one.
0:17:01 > 0:17:05It is always good to sort of knock the cobwebs off and take some deep
0:17:05 > 0:17:09breaths and kind of collect yourself out the back and you feel like,
0:17:09 > 0:17:11"OK, now I'm ready to get a good one."
0:17:11 > 0:17:12And a good one is coming.
0:17:16 > 0:17:20Tom gets ready and the cameraman on the shore starts to film.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23I didn't think about anyone else around me at all.
0:17:23 > 0:17:25You don't when you're surfing big waves.
0:17:25 > 0:17:28You're focused, you're in the zone and you just want to make the drop.
0:17:30 > 0:17:33You're going down at hellspeed, you know.
0:17:33 > 0:17:35You're flying down this wave,
0:17:35 > 0:17:37so you're just looking at your nose and all you want to do
0:17:37 > 0:17:39is just keep your eye on the nose of your board
0:17:39 > 0:17:42and you don't want it to dig in because then you just go over.
0:17:43 > 0:17:48Nic is out shot a few metres away, sitting on his surfboard,
0:17:48 > 0:17:50watching Tom.
0:17:50 > 0:17:54When he was paddling through that wave, we were cheering him on.
0:17:54 > 0:17:57Suddenly, Nic spots something in the water.
0:17:57 > 0:18:00Then when I looked down the face, I was, like, "No!"
0:18:02 > 0:18:04There's a Jet Ski right in front of the wave.
0:18:05 > 0:18:09Now travelling at nearly 30mph, Tom catches sight of it too.
0:18:11 > 0:18:15I just looked up and I saw the Jet Ski, simply put,
0:18:15 > 0:18:16and somebody on it.
0:18:16 > 0:18:20And I'm just, like, "OK, he's actually in the impact zone."
0:18:20 > 0:18:22You know, it all happens in, like, a flash.
0:18:25 > 0:18:26Tom has to think quickly
0:18:26 > 0:18:29to avoid smashing straight into the jet skier,
0:18:29 > 0:18:33which could have deadly consequences for them both.
0:18:33 > 0:18:35He was in my line, you know.
0:18:35 > 0:18:39I wanted to make my line to make the wave and pull off the back.
0:18:39 > 0:18:42That's what you're planning. And he was in my line,
0:18:42 > 0:18:44so I just kind of steered around him.
0:18:48 > 0:18:49Round I went.
0:18:49 > 0:18:52Obviously, I was, like, "Jesus! That guy is going to eat it.
0:18:52 > 0:18:55"That Ski, see you! That's the Ski done."
0:18:56 > 0:19:02Tom just makes it, missing the Jet Ski with only inches to spare.
0:19:02 > 0:19:05The driver jumps off his Jet Ski just in time
0:19:05 > 0:19:07and dives safely through the wave.
0:19:09 > 0:19:11Tom thinks the danger has passed and looks ahead
0:19:11 > 0:19:14to the safety of the beach.
0:19:14 > 0:19:17My plan was just get out. You know, "I just want to get out.
0:19:17 > 0:19:19"I don't know what that is, but maybe I can help in a minute.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22"Someone might be in need of some help. Get out."
0:19:22 > 0:19:23And I rode and I rode.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25Unbeknown to Tom,
0:19:25 > 0:19:29the 300kg driverless Jet Ski is hurtling back towards him.
0:19:31 > 0:19:34I just saw the big black shape coming at me.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36I knew it was the Jet Ski.
0:19:36 > 0:19:38And I just saw it in the corner of my eye and I just was, like,
0:19:38 > 0:19:40"I'm going down."
0:19:54 > 0:19:57Tom disappears from sight.
0:19:57 > 0:20:00All of a sudden, I couldn't see Tom.
0:20:00 > 0:20:04I ask myself, "Is something serious going down? Is this it?
0:20:04 > 0:20:07"Is this the day stuff gets really serious, you know?"
0:20:07 > 0:20:10Because you never want it to be the day that an accident happens to
0:20:10 > 0:20:12someone close to you.
0:20:14 > 0:20:17The Jet Ski is dragging Tom deeper down into the water.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22Before I knew it, I was wrapped up in it.
0:20:22 > 0:20:27It hit my legs and as it wrapped around it felt like it was...
0:20:27 > 0:20:30Whether it was my ten-foot board or the Jet Ski,
0:20:30 > 0:20:32it's difficult to know, cos I was rolling underwater,
0:20:32 > 0:20:33but things were flying around me.
0:20:35 > 0:20:40He fights his way to the surface and, shocked and gasping for breath,
0:20:40 > 0:20:43makes his way to the safety of the beach.
0:20:43 > 0:20:47Got out and I had a big hole on my board, like, the size of my fist,
0:20:47 > 0:20:50from the impact of the Jet Ski hitting it. And that, obviously,
0:20:50 > 0:20:52could have been my head.
0:20:52 > 0:20:54His friends rush over.
0:20:54 > 0:20:59Everyone just hugged each other and said, "Phew! "Everyone good? Are we all good?"
0:20:59 > 0:21:03But Nic can tell the near miss has had a real effect on Tom.
0:21:03 > 0:21:06I think he didn't say anything because he was just in shock.
0:21:06 > 0:21:08When you're in shock, you don't have words to describe.
0:21:08 > 0:21:12That's when I realised, like, "Wow! Tom, you almost died, man."
0:21:15 > 0:21:19Despite the accident, Tom has kept on surfing.
0:21:19 > 0:21:21But he knows he was lucky that day.
0:21:21 > 0:21:23Of course I didn't take it light-heartedly.
0:21:23 > 0:21:27It's something that I'll never forget and I'm just thankful
0:21:27 > 0:21:29we're all in one piece.
0:21:39 > 0:21:41Everyone played their part when Hussain Musoke
0:21:41 > 0:21:46was critically injured - friends, family and the emergency services.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48It really is amazing he survived.
0:21:51 > 0:21:52In Beckton, East London,
0:21:52 > 0:21:55Hussain is trapped beneath a car
0:21:55 > 0:21:58after a terrible accident involving a bus.
0:21:58 > 0:21:59He is pinned against metal gates
0:21:59 > 0:22:02and paramedics are struggling to treat him.
0:22:03 > 0:22:07The fire service have been called in and make short work of the gate
0:22:07 > 0:22:09and, within minutes, the obstruction is gone,
0:22:09 > 0:22:14leaving the paramedics able to examine Hussain's damaged leg.
0:22:14 > 0:22:19The leg, it was an open fracture. The ferocity of the injury
0:22:19 > 0:22:22has caused the bones to come out of the skin.
0:22:22 > 0:22:27The foot was dragged on the pavement as the car hit Hussain.
0:22:27 > 0:22:29So the first thing to do is to assess the leg.
0:22:29 > 0:22:32If the leg is very deformed, you straighten it out.
0:22:33 > 0:22:37The next thing is that you can see the paramedics irrigating the foot
0:22:37 > 0:22:41and if there is a lot of debris from the road which is in the wounds
0:22:41 > 0:22:45of the leg, then it's very easy to wash it there and then
0:22:45 > 0:22:48and, once that is done, then the leg is splinted.
0:22:49 > 0:22:53The paramedics work on Hussain for over an hour.
0:22:53 > 0:22:55We talk about the golden hour
0:22:55 > 0:22:57in treating multiply-injured patients.
0:22:57 > 0:22:59Within that first hour,
0:22:59 > 0:23:02there are many things that you need to get right in order
0:23:02 > 0:23:06to allow them to have the best possible outcome in the future.
0:23:07 > 0:23:11The paramedics have done all they can at the scene.
0:23:12 > 0:23:16The last thing I saw were the paramedics, you know, assuring me.
0:23:16 > 0:23:20I didn't know whether that would be the last thing I see, you know,
0:23:20 > 0:23:22before I die.
0:23:22 > 0:23:24Then I passed out.
0:23:26 > 0:23:29Hussain is rushed to the Royal London Hospital,
0:23:29 > 0:23:31a specialist trauma centre.
0:23:33 > 0:23:37Ismail and his sister, Sanyu, follow and join him in A&E.
0:23:37 > 0:23:41Seeing him there, that was when my emotions came out,
0:23:41 > 0:23:43my sadness and, you know,
0:23:43 > 0:23:46me being distraught because he looked so helpless.
0:23:48 > 0:23:52That was the first time I broke down, seeing him like that.
0:23:52 > 0:23:55Cos they didn't know whether, if Dad's going to be OK or not.
0:23:56 > 0:23:59Hussain has multiple fractures in his right leg,
0:23:59 > 0:24:04he has two broken ribs, a punctured lung and a leaking heart valve.
0:24:04 > 0:24:06He's immediately taken into surgery.
0:24:06 > 0:24:09The family can only sit and wait.
0:24:09 > 0:24:14If he doesn't pull through this, you know, I have probably lost,
0:24:14 > 0:24:19you know, the only person I've looked up to and idolised,
0:24:19 > 0:24:21you know, just like that.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Nima Heidari
0:24:25 > 0:24:27is Hussain's consultant.
0:24:27 > 0:24:30It is a difficult injury to fix.
0:24:30 > 0:24:34The technicalities of putting the bones back together
0:24:34 > 0:24:37is not the main issue.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39The problem is actually over the long term.
0:24:42 > 0:24:48The operation on Hussain's leg lasts for five hours, but it's a success.
0:24:49 > 0:24:52Then his condition dramatically deteriorates.
0:24:52 > 0:24:56He struggles to breathe and is put into an induced coma.
0:24:56 > 0:24:59Because of the multiple fractures that he'd had on his ribs
0:24:59 > 0:25:01and the injury to his lung,
0:25:01 > 0:25:07he becomes unable to ventilate by himself and he needs assistance.
0:25:07 > 0:25:10Hussain remains this way for nearly a month.
0:25:10 > 0:25:15That period was emotionally quite hard on the family -
0:25:15 > 0:25:17seeing him in a coma.
0:25:23 > 0:25:25When the doctors bring him round,
0:25:25 > 0:25:27family and friends are by his side.
0:25:27 > 0:25:31But on waking, Hussain remembers nothing of the accident.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36I just remember, you know, waking up in a hospital.
0:25:36 > 0:25:38I said, "What's going on?"
0:25:38 > 0:25:42And it was, like, "Hussain, you had an accident for some time.
0:25:42 > 0:25:46"I mean, you nearly died." And then I said, "What?"
0:25:46 > 0:25:50His children are just delighted to have their dad back.
0:25:50 > 0:25:53I was happy that he was able to recognise who I was.
0:25:53 > 0:25:59He was smiling and happy and he was so happy to see us.
0:25:59 > 0:26:02I just gave him a hug and a kiss and said, "Hey!
0:26:02 > 0:26:05"You're still here, you're still fighting, you know?
0:26:05 > 0:26:10You know, it's not your time to go, you know?"
0:26:10 > 0:26:15After four further operations and more than two months in hospital,
0:26:15 > 0:26:18there's finally some good news - he's well enough to go home.
0:26:21 > 0:26:24Five months later, Hussain is making good progress with his recovery,
0:26:24 > 0:26:28but he still needs round-the-clock care.
0:26:28 > 0:26:32He's on crutches now and a wheelchair so, I mean,
0:26:32 > 0:26:33it's going to take a very long time.
0:26:33 > 0:26:35It's life changing.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38I think it's been a very difficult time for Hussain,
0:26:38 > 0:26:39there is no doubt about it.
0:26:39 > 0:26:43It was a close call for both his life and also his leg.
0:26:45 > 0:26:47I don't know what the future holds, you know,
0:26:47 > 0:26:50but God has given me another chance to be there for my children,
0:26:50 > 0:26:52see them grow.
0:26:52 > 0:26:56The freak accident has affected the lives of Hussain's whole family.
0:26:56 > 0:27:01He was the full-time carer for his wife and Sanyu has now given up
0:27:01 > 0:27:04university to care for both her parents.
0:27:04 > 0:27:08My family, we won't function unless we're all together.
0:27:08 > 0:27:13Now I'm in the position where I need to fill out what he had been doing,
0:27:13 > 0:27:15you know, taking my mum to the hospital
0:27:15 > 0:27:18and I have to learn how to drive now.
0:27:18 > 0:27:21Hussain's recovery is going to be a long process,
0:27:21 > 0:27:25but Dr Heidari is confident about his future.
0:27:25 > 0:27:27I'm very hopeful for Hussain.
0:27:27 > 0:27:29I'm sure he will do very well in the end.
0:27:32 > 0:27:35The bus driver involved in the incident
0:27:35 > 0:27:39was fined for careless driving and given five points on his licence
0:27:39 > 0:27:43after a court agreed it was a tragic accident.
0:27:45 > 0:27:49Now at home, Hussain has been able to go and thank his friends and
0:27:49 > 0:27:53neighbours who helped save his life on that horrific day.
0:27:53 > 0:27:56I just cuddled him for ages and I was...
0:27:56 > 0:27:57It just brought a tear to my eye.
0:27:57 > 0:28:00I was so relieved that he was all right.
0:28:00 > 0:28:04Honestly, I'm baffled how he's even alive.
0:28:04 > 0:28:08I thought at the time it was going to be the end.
0:28:08 > 0:28:11It was that close to death and, yeah, I had a narrow escape.
0:28:23 > 0:28:24A very brave man.
0:28:24 > 0:28:27That's it from Close Calls today. See you next time.
