0:00:02 > 0:00:05A close call, a moment of danger when life can hang in the balance.
0:00:05 > 0:00:08I could die here. This is really serious.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11A split second where the outcome could go either way.
0:00:11 > 0:00:12Right, call 999 right now.
0:00:12 > 0:00:15The difference between disaster and survival.
0:00:15 > 0:00:19You could see it on the faces of the crew how life-threatening this was.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Why would you need to swim? Apparently they're supposed to still be on a boat.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25These are the people that have been there and lived to tell the tale.
0:00:25 > 0:00:27I thought she had died.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29It's a day they'll never forget.
0:00:29 > 0:00:31The day they had a close call.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49Today on Close Calls...
0:00:49 > 0:00:53Mountain rescue workers struggle to treat an injured climber who has
0:00:53 > 0:00:56plunged 200ft down a rock face.
0:00:56 > 0:00:57Stay! Cut down!
0:00:57 > 0:00:59It's a balancing act.
0:00:59 > 0:01:03He's perched precariously on a small ledge.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06And now they need to make room for a helicopter winchman.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08Yeah, the structure's a bit loose.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13Also today... Two biking brothers on a day out,
0:01:13 > 0:01:15when one loses concentration.
0:01:20 > 0:01:24And paramedics treat a child in a local park.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27She has just been hit by this falling tree.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38Grasmoor Mountain in the Lake District.
0:01:38 > 0:01:42A mountain rescue team have just reached a badly injured climber
0:01:42 > 0:01:44who has fallen 200ft.
0:01:44 > 0:01:49They are trying to work on a narrow, rocky ledge on this cliff face.
0:01:50 > 0:01:54An RAF helicopter stands by waiting to airlift the casualty.
0:01:54 > 0:01:55Stay!
0:01:55 > 0:01:58He has a badly dislocated ankle.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00There is some vascular compromise.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03The rescue team's doctor wants to reset it,
0:02:03 > 0:02:07but the force needed could send him plunging down the drop.
0:02:07 > 0:02:11The rescue team brace him and the injured man's face contorts in agony.
0:02:11 > 0:02:15His screams drowned out by the helicopter.
0:02:26 > 0:02:31Painter and decorator Ryan lives in the small country town of Silloth in
0:02:31 > 0:02:35Cumbria. He has grown up with the Lake District as his backyard,
0:02:35 > 0:02:39and it has given him a real passion for the great outdoors.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41When you're out in the open, beautiful scenery around you,
0:02:41 > 0:02:43you can let your mind drift and
0:02:43 > 0:02:46really forget you're there.
0:02:46 > 0:02:5025-year-old Ryan spends a lot of his free time with his brother, Will,
0:02:50 > 0:02:52who is just three years older.
0:02:52 > 0:02:54They're pretty close.
0:02:54 > 0:02:57We always see each other maybe two or three times a week.
0:02:57 > 0:03:00We will have a laugh and get up to things.
0:03:02 > 0:03:03They met their friend, Joe,
0:03:03 > 0:03:07when Will was working with him at the local garden centre.
0:03:07 > 0:03:08They are very close brothers.
0:03:08 > 0:03:12Great fun, we have social nights, and great people to get along with.
0:03:12 > 0:03:14You know, really good friends.
0:03:15 > 0:03:19The brothers discovered Joe is a bit of a mountaineering expert who
0:03:19 > 0:03:21regularly heads to Everest base camp.
0:03:21 > 0:03:23I've been climbing for over 25 years.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26I've taken many new people that have never even ventured onto the
0:03:26 > 0:03:28mountains before for their first time.
0:03:28 > 0:03:30It's nice to see them come alive and enjoy it.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35Joe's passion inspires the two brothers.
0:03:35 > 0:03:40So we decided to all go up Everest and we were going to do a few months' worth
0:03:40 > 0:03:43of walking and then book the trip.
0:03:43 > 0:03:45It's a big step from the Lake District to the Himalayas,
0:03:45 > 0:03:49so Joe suggests they start by practising more locally.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53He recommends a day's climbing on nearby Grasmoor,
0:03:53 > 0:03:57the local peak of nearly 3,000ft.
0:03:57 > 0:04:01The plan that we chose was the easiest route where now and again you may
0:04:01 > 0:04:06need to put your hand on the rock, but no rope or protection is required.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14It's a sunny Sunday morning in June when the three friends meet at the
0:04:14 > 0:04:18bottom of the mountain. They are joined by another pal, Brian, and set off.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21There was a bit of an argument over who was going to carry
0:04:21 > 0:04:23the backpack, because of the extra weight.
0:04:23 > 0:04:27Because we had a couple of beers in to celebrate when we reached the top.
0:04:27 > 0:04:31The boys agree to share carrying the bag, and Will takes his turn first.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35'We took it in our stride, laughing and joking.'
0:04:35 > 0:04:36After an hour or so,
0:04:36 > 0:04:40the group reach a point where the grassland becomes solid rock.
0:04:41 > 0:04:46The lads are keen to come off the safer path to the top and try their hand at real climbing.
0:04:46 > 0:04:49'The faces, they weren't that hard to get over, really.'
0:04:49 > 0:04:51Maybe that much higher than my head.
0:04:51 > 0:04:55Not that high. So it was a bit climb, walk,
0:04:55 > 0:04:57a little bit of climbing and walking.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00Experienced climber Joe stays at the rear of the group.
0:05:00 > 0:05:03So I could observe they were doing the right things,
0:05:03 > 0:05:04they were having three points of contact,
0:05:04 > 0:05:08they were checking the rock before they put their weight on it.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11Near the summit, they arrive at the last set of rock faces.
0:05:11 > 0:05:15That's when it started getting a bit scary.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17Will, at that time,
0:05:17 > 0:05:21had had enough of the climbing and he wanted to get onto the path itself.
0:05:21 > 0:05:26So Joe suggests he stays with Will while the other two continue climbing.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28And I said, "Well, just make sure you have got three points of contact,
0:05:28 > 0:05:30"you check the rock."
0:05:30 > 0:05:34By now, Ryan is taking his turn carrying the backpack.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36Trying to prove a point I'm the better climber,
0:05:36 > 0:05:38I can carry this all the way up the top.
0:05:38 > 0:05:42So I did the climb over this last bit just over head height,
0:05:42 > 0:05:43final bit of the climb.
0:05:44 > 0:05:49And that's when things go disastrously wrong for Ryan.
0:05:49 > 0:05:52As soon as I committed my weight and pulled myself, my body weight up,
0:05:52 > 0:05:55the other rock sheared off.
0:05:55 > 0:05:59And with us having the backpack on, I was a bit top-heavy.
0:05:59 > 0:06:03I went backwards and ended up rolling.
0:06:03 > 0:06:09Unable to stop his momentum, Ryan starts plummeting down the mountainside.
0:06:09 > 0:06:10Went over the first drop.
0:06:10 > 0:06:14I landed flat on my back on a load of rocks.
0:06:14 > 0:06:18And without a backpack on, it would have actually broke my back.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22But the weight of the backpack continues to drag him backwards
0:06:22 > 0:06:24and down the treacherous rock face.
0:06:24 > 0:06:30He disappears out of sight of the others who have nearly reached the summit.
0:06:30 > 0:06:33All I heard first was a load of rocks tumbling.
0:06:33 > 0:06:34You knew something was wrong.
0:06:34 > 0:06:38And then all we could hear was screaming.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42The further down he was getting, the quieter the screams were.
0:06:42 > 0:06:43It just never seemed to end.
0:06:43 > 0:06:47Ryan continues tumbling over and over again.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50While I was rolling, I was scrabbling at the backpack.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53I could get the bag off and chuck the bag.
0:06:53 > 0:06:55But he just keeps on rolling.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58Then, after each drop, it seemed to daze us a little bit.
0:07:00 > 0:07:05Then, Ryan plunges into a narrow channel between two rock faces,
0:07:05 > 0:07:08giving him one last desperate chance to survive.
0:07:08 > 0:07:12As soon as I hit that gully, it seemed to funnel us.
0:07:12 > 0:07:13And I could get my legs out.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16But, like I was saying, I was going at that much of a speed,
0:07:16 > 0:07:20as soon as I hit the bottom, my ankle just went snap.
0:07:23 > 0:07:25After that, I seemed to go into shock.
0:07:25 > 0:07:29Ryan lands on this narrow ledge 200ft down.
0:07:31 > 0:07:37Below is another sheer 60ft drop onto sharp, jagged rocks.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40And after that, a terrifying plunge to the bottom of the mountain another
0:07:40 > 0:07:42500ft below.
0:07:44 > 0:07:48For his brother and friends far above, there is just a terrible silence.
0:07:48 > 0:07:53We were shouting his name, shouting his name, and nothing came back.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55At that point, I thought the worst.
0:07:55 > 0:07:58I thought he was dead. I thought he was gone.
0:08:04 > 0:08:08Ryan lies seriously injured, clinging to the narrow ledge
0:08:08 > 0:08:11as mountain rescue volunteers try to reach him.
0:08:11 > 0:08:14An RAF helicopter is called in,
0:08:14 > 0:08:16but the location makes an extraction precarious.
0:08:16 > 0:08:18Stay. Cut down!
0:08:26 > 0:08:29Two brothers in real trouble there after taking up a new and
0:08:29 > 0:08:31adventurous hobby.
0:08:31 > 0:08:35Now, a story about another pair of brothers whose idea of adventure is
0:08:35 > 0:08:37on two wheels rather than two legs.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40They're close, but they got a little too close for comfort.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49The A32 near Alton, Hampshire.
0:08:50 > 0:08:56Two motorbike-mad brothers are enjoying a day out with fellow enthusiasts.
0:08:56 > 0:08:58They are in convoy and approaching a junction.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02A car in front stops to make a right turn.
0:09:02 > 0:09:04The bikers brake.
0:09:04 > 0:09:06But one is distracted.
0:09:06 > 0:09:09He sees the danger too late.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12He and his pillion passenger plough straight into the back of his
0:09:12 > 0:09:14brother's bike at 30mph.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20Don't move, don't move, don't move.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33Brothers Kyle and Aaron live near Fareham on the south coast.
0:09:33 > 0:09:35They have got a lot in common.
0:09:35 > 0:09:38They both work as couriers and they are both musicians.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42Kyle is the oldest by three years.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44The brothers have a good relationship,
0:09:44 > 0:09:47although with a bit of sibling rivalry.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50We're definitely close. Especially because we have been playing music
0:09:50 > 0:09:52together a long time as well. Aaron plays guitar.
0:09:52 > 0:09:55He's a good friend and a good drummer.
0:09:55 > 0:09:56But he's always late for everything.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01The pair's greatest shared passion is for biking.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05They got the bug at the same time and regularly ride out together with
0:10:05 > 0:10:06a group of friends.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09There is nothing that quite feels like riding a bike.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12It's very freeing.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14In all the years the brothers have been riding,
0:10:14 > 0:10:16neither has had a serious accident.
0:10:16 > 0:10:20It's the freedom versus the risks.
0:10:20 > 0:10:23I mean, you always know the risks going into it.
0:10:24 > 0:10:28It's a bright winter's morning and the boys have hit the road with a
0:10:28 > 0:10:29bunch of mates.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32The idea was go out for a group ride, and we did.
0:10:32 > 0:10:35There was four or five of us, everyone was in good spirits.
0:10:35 > 0:10:36We were all excited.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38Midway through the day,
0:10:38 > 0:10:42they stop for refreshment at a cafe welcoming bikers.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45Older brother Kyle often videos their rides.
0:10:46 > 0:10:51Today, he has a camera fixed to the handlebars of his bike facing towards him.
0:10:51 > 0:10:56The second camera is fixed to his brother Aaron's chest and is facing forward.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59I am a YouTuber, so the footage goes on my channel.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01But in the event that, for example, someone hits me,
0:11:01 > 0:11:04I have the cameras there for insurance protection.
0:11:05 > 0:11:09After their break, the brothers and their pals set off again.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11There are five bikes altogether.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13Aaron, on the red bike, is third in line.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17Kyle, dressed in blue, is at the back.
0:11:18 > 0:11:21A friend, Amy, is riding pillion.
0:11:21 > 0:11:24We were on the A32 northbound towards Alton.
0:11:24 > 0:11:27We were sort of staggered as we usually do.
0:11:27 > 0:11:30It was just follow whoever's in front.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33Further along the road is a junction.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36There was a car that was slowing down to turn right.
0:11:36 > 0:11:38We all thought, "Oh, got to slow down quick."
0:11:38 > 0:11:40So we slowed down pretty quickly.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43Kyle is quite a way back from the rest of the group.
0:11:43 > 0:11:45He begins to brake more gently than the others.
0:11:47 > 0:11:49The other four bikes come to a complete halt.
0:11:49 > 0:11:51But Kyle doesn't notice.
0:11:52 > 0:11:55He has become distracted by a passing motorcyclist
0:11:55 > 0:11:57on the other side of the road.
0:11:57 > 0:12:01It's a sort of a customary thing to nod another biker.
0:12:01 > 0:12:05So I nodded the biker and watched him in my wing mirror for a second.
0:12:05 > 0:12:10And as I looked back up and everything went very downhill very quickly.
0:12:11 > 0:12:14Kyle smashes straight into the back of Aaron's bike.
0:12:20 > 0:12:24Kyle is thrown from his motorbike as his brother's flies forward,
0:12:24 > 0:12:28knocking down two other bikers.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30The impact was very forceful.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33The force knocked my head straight into Aaron's back.
0:12:33 > 0:12:37At the same time, I had my foot crushed between my foot peg and his
0:12:37 > 0:12:42exhaust, and my left hand essentially punched the back of his bike.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45I don't know how I stayed on that bike.
0:12:45 > 0:12:47It was like a bucking bronco thing.
0:12:47 > 0:12:51I actually just passed out and I just remember feeling sliding along
0:12:51 > 0:12:55the ground and this horrible grinding noise.
0:12:55 > 0:12:56My bike went into the other bike.
0:12:56 > 0:13:00My leg got caught between the two bikes, and that is what hurt.
0:13:02 > 0:13:08Kyle's pillion rider thrown from the bike somehow escapes unharmed.
0:13:08 > 0:13:12But Kyle and Aaron lie on the cold tarmac ten yards apart.
0:13:12 > 0:13:16Aaron's footage shows their friends and other concerned drivers gathering around.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18Are you all right?
0:13:18 > 0:13:21- Who was that?- Don't move, don't move, don't move.
0:13:21 > 0:13:23Are you OK, mate?
0:13:23 > 0:13:26The people standing around me were pretty worried, saying stuff like,
0:13:26 > 0:13:28"Don't move. Keep your neck straight."
0:13:28 > 0:13:29- Who went into me?- Somebody did.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31- Was it Kyle?- Don't worry, don't worry.
0:13:31 > 0:13:34- Was it Kyle?- It doesn't matter.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37They were pretty reluctant to tell me that Kyle went into me.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40I think it was a sense of like they didn't want me to worry.
0:13:40 > 0:13:44Both brothers are in shock, but their concern is for each other.
0:13:44 > 0:13:46When I first looked over at Aaron, surrounded by people,
0:13:46 > 0:13:50I was trying to work out whether or not he was moving.
0:13:50 > 0:13:54And then I heard him talk, so I was massively relieved.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57In fact, it's Kyle, who was responsible for the accident,
0:13:57 > 0:14:00who appears to have come off the worst.
0:14:00 > 0:14:05The paramedics arrived, and at that moment Amy said, "Oh, my God,
0:14:05 > 0:14:06"your foot. Oh, my God."
0:14:06 > 0:14:07As far as I was told,
0:14:07 > 0:14:10it looked like something out of, like, a horror movie prop.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13Before I knew it, I was bundled into an ambulance with copious amounts of
0:14:13 > 0:14:17morphine. And, yeah, it was all a bit hazy, obviously.
0:14:17 > 0:14:20Aaron is also taken to hospital,
0:14:20 > 0:14:25where doctors discover he has a small knee fracture.
0:14:25 > 0:14:29But it is Kyle who has to undergo extensive surgery on his foot.
0:14:29 > 0:14:32I would have definitely been a lot more upset about the whole situation
0:14:32 > 0:14:35if the biggest injuries weren't my own.
0:14:35 > 0:14:38Especially if it was Aaron in my shoes instead.
0:14:38 > 0:14:43Luckily for me, that wasn't the way it was and I've made my bed
0:14:43 > 0:14:45and am now lying in it.
0:14:45 > 0:14:47Kyle still suffers pain in his foot,
0:14:47 > 0:14:51but he's still drumming and hopes to be back on a bike soon when he can
0:14:51 > 0:14:53replace his old one.
0:14:53 > 0:14:55Aaron has already got a newer model,
0:14:55 > 0:14:58paid for by the pay-out from Kyle's insurance.
0:14:59 > 0:15:04And he has now got the upper hand where his older brother is concerned.
0:15:04 > 0:15:07Yeah, if we ever argue about something, "Well, you drove into me."
0:15:07 > 0:15:08KYLE LAUGHS
0:15:08 > 0:15:12Kyle's promised 100% concentration from now on.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15The whole incident has definitely woken me up to road safety.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17The fact that I got away so lightly,
0:15:17 > 0:15:21and that everyone else got away more lightly than I did, is
0:15:21 > 0:15:24very lucky, to be honest.
0:15:24 > 0:15:25It could have been a lot worse.
0:15:30 > 0:15:35A huge tree has fallen in a local park. Four children were
0:15:35 > 0:15:37playing beneath it.
0:15:37 > 0:15:38At first I thought it was a gunshot.
0:15:38 > 0:15:42It sounded like a car's tyre popping or something.
0:15:42 > 0:15:44And then the girls screamed.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55But first, back to Grasmoor Mountain in the Lake District.
0:15:55 > 0:16:0125-year-old Ryan has suffered an horrific fall.
0:16:01 > 0:16:04He has plunged 200ft down a steep rock face
0:16:04 > 0:16:05and landed on a small ledge.
0:16:05 > 0:16:08Below him is another sheer drop
0:16:08 > 0:16:10onto jagged rock.
0:16:10 > 0:16:13When I slid down the gully, I got my feet out, I hit the bottom,
0:16:13 > 0:16:16and that's when my ankle gave way.
0:16:16 > 0:16:20Near the mountain summit, Ryan's frantic brother, Will, and friend, Joe,
0:16:20 > 0:16:23have no idea if he has survived.
0:16:23 > 0:16:26After about a minute of shouting his name, he shouted.
0:16:26 > 0:16:31And that calmed me down a lot, you know. Loads.
0:16:31 > 0:16:32We said, "Are you OK?"
0:16:32 > 0:16:34And he said, "Yes, I'm fine."
0:16:34 > 0:16:36But I needed to see whether he was fine or not,
0:16:36 > 0:16:38because he must've been injured in some way.
0:16:38 > 0:16:40Ryan IS injured.
0:16:40 > 0:16:42His head is battered and bleeding,
0:16:42 > 0:16:44and he has excruciating pain in his ankle.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47He struggles to take his boot off.
0:16:47 > 0:16:48I can't remember taking it off.
0:16:49 > 0:16:52Then after that, I looked at it, and I don't know why,
0:16:52 > 0:16:55I got my phone out and took a picture.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57This is that picture.
0:16:57 > 0:17:01Ryan's foot has been wrenched to the side and is twisted at a 45-degree
0:17:01 > 0:17:04angle to the rest of his leg.
0:17:04 > 0:17:07His friends are desperate to know how he is.
0:17:07 > 0:17:11Experienced climber Joe scrambles back down the mountain until he catches
0:17:11 > 0:17:14sight of Ryan way below him on the ledge.
0:17:14 > 0:17:16He had fallen at least 200ft.
0:17:16 > 0:17:20Joe kept saying, "I can't believe where he's landed."
0:17:21 > 0:17:23We couldn't physically get to him,
0:17:23 > 0:17:25but I knew that he could have had a head trauma.
0:17:26 > 0:17:29Joe calls Mountain Rescue.
0:17:29 > 0:17:33The on-call volunteers rush to their base at nearby Cockermouth.
0:17:33 > 0:17:36By chance, deputy team leader Martin Pickavance is out fell-running
0:17:36 > 0:17:40nearby with a friend when his radio goes off.
0:17:40 > 0:17:44I happened to be within a five-minute run of that spot,
0:17:44 > 0:17:48and we spent probably five minutes just looking around the crag trying to find the casualty.
0:17:51 > 0:17:54When they do, Martin and his friend, both experienced climbers,
0:17:54 > 0:17:57head up to the ledge where Ryan is lying.
0:17:57 > 0:18:01At that point, I felt a lot safer when I saw them come over the top.
0:18:01 > 0:18:05Very relieved to see that Ryan is conscious and he's talking to me.
0:18:05 > 0:18:08His ankle was obviously quite badly broken,
0:18:08 > 0:18:10but he could have had a back or spine injury.
0:18:12 > 0:18:16Martin knows he needs to get Ryan off the mountain quickly,
0:18:16 > 0:18:18and there is only one way to do that.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21He calls in an RAF helicopter.
0:18:21 > 0:18:23Not long before it reaches them,
0:18:23 > 0:18:25the rest of the Mountain Rescue team arrive.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28And a group make their way up to the ledge.
0:18:28 > 0:18:33Veteran team leader Mike Park films with a head cam as he helps coordinate
0:18:33 > 0:18:34the operation.
0:18:34 > 0:18:39It really is just a case of checking up that we have got everything covered.
0:18:39 > 0:18:43And one of his first concerns is to find Ryan's friends.
0:18:43 > 0:18:45These guys were above Ryan,
0:18:45 > 0:18:49so the last thing we really wanted to do was have them knocking down rock
0:18:49 > 0:18:53or other material down onto Ryan and the team members.
0:18:53 > 0:18:56One of the rescuers is a doctor.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58He dresses Ryan's head wound and gives him oxygen.
0:19:00 > 0:19:03But it is Ryan's ankle injury that is causing real concern.
0:19:03 > 0:19:05It is badly dislocated.
0:19:05 > 0:19:07Because of the nature of the injury,
0:19:07 > 0:19:10you might have a limited blood flow to his foot.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12We were concerned he could potentially lose his foot.
0:19:14 > 0:19:16The helicopter has arrived,
0:19:16 > 0:19:20but there is very little space on the narrow ledge.
0:19:20 > 0:19:24The doctor decides to try and reset Ryan's ankle before calling the
0:19:24 > 0:19:26winchman down.
0:19:26 > 0:19:31He needs to pull hard on Ryan's foot, and in such a confined space,
0:19:31 > 0:19:33it's a dangerous operation.
0:19:33 > 0:19:37Two members of the team brace the medic from behind to stop him plunging
0:19:37 > 0:19:39down the cliff face.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42Martin supports Ryan's leg at the knee.
0:19:42 > 0:19:44We gave Ryan some very strong painkillers.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47Between myself and one of the team doctors, Joe,
0:19:47 > 0:19:50I pulled in one direction, and Joe pulled in the other direction.
0:19:51 > 0:19:53The camera captures Ryan's reaction.
0:19:57 > 0:19:58Probably the most pain I have felt.
0:19:58 > 0:20:01I could feel the bones crunching,
0:20:01 > 0:20:04grinding as they were going over the top of each other.
0:20:04 > 0:20:06I have never felt agony like it.
0:20:07 > 0:20:11The manoeuvre is successful, and Ryan's ankle can now be put in a splint.
0:20:14 > 0:20:15With the main injury treated,
0:20:15 > 0:20:18the helicopter lowers a winchman down to the ledge.
0:20:20 > 0:20:23A stretcher has been brought up the mountain and is waiting at the bottom
0:20:23 > 0:20:25of the cliff below.
0:20:25 > 0:20:27A fractured dislocation of his ankle...
0:20:27 > 0:20:30The team send a rope down to haul it up...
0:20:30 > 0:20:31Rope below!
0:20:31 > 0:20:35..then organise a second rope to be lowered from other team members above.
0:20:35 > 0:20:37What we need is a rope to secure the stretcher while we load him on
0:20:37 > 0:20:39the stretcher, please.
0:20:39 > 0:20:41Yeah, the stretcher is with us.
0:20:43 > 0:20:47The helicopter stands off while Ryan is placed on the stretcher.
0:20:47 > 0:20:50We're just getting in the stretcher now, OK?
0:20:50 > 0:20:52It's a hazardous operation.
0:20:52 > 0:20:54- OK, Ryan?- Yeah.- Good lad.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57Got the head guard down over you here, OK?
0:20:57 > 0:21:01Once Ryan is secure, the winchman calls the helicopter back.
0:21:01 > 0:21:03I'm going to get them to lower a high line to me.
0:21:03 > 0:21:05Just get you to use the line, it's to stop you spinning.
0:21:06 > 0:21:10Finally, Ryan and the winchman are lifted off the mountain.
0:21:14 > 0:21:18The only thing I can really remember is how much of a weird sensation it
0:21:18 > 0:21:24was getting lifted into the air and swinging out underneath the helicopter.
0:21:24 > 0:21:26His brother, Will, and his friends watch from the mountain as the
0:21:26 > 0:21:30helicopter leaves, heading for Carlisle Hospital.
0:21:30 > 0:21:35I felt a lot worse then than what I did when, you know,
0:21:35 > 0:21:38when he actually fell.
0:21:38 > 0:21:42Maybe because we don't know actually how bad he was.
0:21:46 > 0:21:51Ryan is examined at the hospital and miraculously has no serious neck or
0:21:51 > 0:21:54head injuries. But his ankle is shattered.
0:21:54 > 0:21:57It takes surgeons five and a half hours to piece it back together.
0:21:59 > 0:22:03Ryan is now back on his feet, but it has been a long recovery,
0:22:03 > 0:22:06and he faces further treatment to his ankle.
0:22:06 > 0:22:10The way I like to look at it is it could have been a lot worse.
0:22:10 > 0:22:13Other people have got worse injuries and had to live with worse,
0:22:13 > 0:22:17so why should I look on myself with sympathy?
0:22:19 > 0:22:22He shouldn't be here. Even the doctors when we got to the hospital were
0:22:22 > 0:22:24saying he had an angel on his shoulder.
0:22:25 > 0:22:28If he hadn't have landed on that ledge,
0:22:28 > 0:22:30then Ryan certainly wouldn't have been here today.
0:22:30 > 0:22:32I should have died on that fall.
0:22:32 > 0:22:35But a lucky chance saved us.
0:22:48 > 0:22:50Blackburn, Lancashire.
0:22:50 > 0:22:53A 12-year-old girl sits on the ground of a local park.
0:22:53 > 0:22:57She is in shock and being urgently treated by paramedics who fear she
0:22:57 > 0:22:59may have head and neck injuries.
0:23:01 > 0:23:06She's been hit by this 60-tonne, 40-foot-high tree as it fell.
0:23:07 > 0:23:11The young girl has cuts and bruises to her face and legs.
0:23:11 > 0:23:13The paramedics fit a neck collar,
0:23:13 > 0:23:16lie her down and slide her onto a stretcher.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20She was fishing with her best friend when the tree collapsed,
0:23:20 > 0:23:22injuring them both.
0:23:22 > 0:23:23It was so scary.
0:23:23 > 0:23:25I turned around and I just froze. I couldn't move.
0:23:25 > 0:23:30Two young boys fishing with them managed to get out of the way just in time.
0:23:30 > 0:23:33Turned and the tree fell on top of the girls.
0:23:33 > 0:23:36I looked at Kieran and I thought we would just see someone die.
0:23:44 > 0:23:47What are you getting for Dave at school?
0:23:47 > 0:23:48THEY LAUGH
0:23:48 > 0:23:52Maisie and Allie have been best friends since they were three years old.
0:23:54 > 0:23:57Now 12, the girls are closer than ever, quite literally.
0:23:59 > 0:24:00They live next door to one another.
0:24:02 > 0:24:03We see each other, like, every night.
0:24:03 > 0:24:06We go, like, shopping together and we go places together.
0:24:06 > 0:24:08We are really silly and giddy together.
0:24:08 > 0:24:10I think that is what makes me happy.
0:24:10 > 0:24:13Maisie's antics make Allie smile.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16She's just really funny and, like, when she walks into a room, she just,
0:24:16 > 0:24:19like... I just laugh straightaway, no matter what she does.
0:24:19 > 0:24:20Proper funny.
0:24:21 > 0:24:25The girls enjoy playing outdoors, and one warm summer's day in July,
0:24:25 > 0:24:29they set off to the local park to try and catch fish in the river.
0:24:29 > 0:24:30We were just, like, messing around.
0:24:30 > 0:24:32We kept catching loads of fish.
0:24:32 > 0:24:34We were really giddy and happy.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38Also at the park that day are local lads Kieran and Kyle.
0:24:39 > 0:24:41It was a hot day and because it was hot,
0:24:41 > 0:24:46we decided we'd go to the river and we organised it.
0:24:46 > 0:24:48We were there and we saw those girls.
0:24:48 > 0:24:50They were just, like, chilling in the river.
0:24:50 > 0:24:54One of them was off catching fish in a plastic bottle with a fish in it.
0:24:54 > 0:24:58The boys ask the girls if they can borrow the fishing net.
0:24:58 > 0:25:01Then we just started fishing together with the boys.
0:25:01 > 0:25:03Yeah, we just had a good time together.
0:25:04 > 0:25:09But their fun is dramatically cut short when they hear a terrifying sound.
0:25:11 > 0:25:13At first, I thought it was a gunshot.
0:25:13 > 0:25:16It sounded like a car's tyre popping or something.
0:25:16 > 0:25:18And then the girls screamed.
0:25:19 > 0:25:24The noise is an enormous tree cracking and beginning to topple over.
0:25:24 > 0:25:26It's heading straight for them.
0:25:27 > 0:25:30It was coming so quick, it was so scary.
0:25:30 > 0:25:32I turned around and I just froze, I couldn't move.
0:25:32 > 0:25:37As the huge 40-foot, 60-tonne tree crashes down on them,
0:25:37 > 0:25:39the boys just jump clear.
0:25:41 > 0:25:43But the girls aren't quick enough.
0:25:44 > 0:25:46I turned and the tree fell on top of the girls,
0:25:46 > 0:25:50and I looked at Kieran and I thought we would just see someone die.
0:25:51 > 0:25:53Maisie and Allie have vanished.
0:25:53 > 0:25:59All the boys can see is this massive tree trunk now in the river where the girls were standing.
0:25:59 > 0:26:02When the tree fell, it hit my head.
0:26:02 > 0:26:05I felt loads of weight on me and I just sunk into the water.
0:26:07 > 0:26:09Kyle is horrified.
0:26:09 > 0:26:12After the tree fell, there was just silence and I thought they were dead.
0:26:14 > 0:26:18But the silence is suddenly broken by the girls' terrified screams.
0:26:20 > 0:26:23You couldn't see them because they were covered in leaves and twigs and
0:26:23 > 0:26:25stuff and they were just screaming.
0:26:25 > 0:26:29Maisie and Allie are still in the river and trapped under the tree.
0:26:29 > 0:26:33Its bulk is creating a dam, and the water is rising rapidly.
0:26:33 > 0:26:36The water was scaring me more than the tree and, like, my neck,
0:26:36 > 0:26:40because it was rising so quickly and I was so scared.
0:26:40 > 0:26:43When I got from under the water, I could just see leaves everywhere.
0:26:43 > 0:26:45Like all the leaves that had fell off the tree.
0:26:45 > 0:26:49Unable to move the huge tree, the boys call for help.
0:26:49 > 0:26:51Their cries are heard by a group of joggers.
0:26:52 > 0:26:57They all ran over. It was like a stampede of joggers.
0:26:57 > 0:26:59One runner calls the emergency services whilst the others
0:26:59 > 0:27:03pull Allie and Maisie from under the tree.
0:27:03 > 0:27:07They, like, carried us out on their shoulders and then they sat us down,
0:27:07 > 0:27:09gave us their jackets to warm up.
0:27:09 > 0:27:13An ambulance crew arrive and are concerned Maisie and Allie may have neck injuries.
0:27:15 > 0:27:20These photos taken at the scene show paramedics treating Maisie minutes
0:27:20 > 0:27:21after she was rescued from the river.
0:27:23 > 0:27:24I couldn't really see properly.
0:27:24 > 0:27:26It was just really scary.
0:27:26 > 0:27:28I burst into tears and my bottom lip went.
0:27:28 > 0:27:31Allie is also checked over.
0:27:31 > 0:27:32They wouldn't let me move whatsoever.
0:27:33 > 0:27:36The girls are rushed to the Royal Blackburn Hospital,
0:27:36 > 0:27:40but have escaped with minor muscle damage plus cuts and bruises.
0:27:42 > 0:27:47Their new friends Kieran and Kyle know what a close call they had.
0:27:47 > 0:27:49The girls are really lucky to be alive,
0:27:49 > 0:27:53because it was a massive tree and they honestly could have died.
0:27:53 > 0:27:58We were happy with what we did and relieved that the girls weren't harmed.
0:27:58 > 0:28:02And Maisie and Allie are grateful to their young rescuers.
0:28:02 > 0:28:05They helped us so much, really. I was so thankful.
0:28:05 > 0:28:07Really lucky, because if the boys didn't get involved,
0:28:07 > 0:28:10I think we all would have panicked, and when we shouted,
0:28:10 > 0:28:12I don't think we'd have been as loud as the boys.
0:28:21 > 0:28:25Big thanks to everybody who helped the girls out after that freak accident.
0:28:25 > 0:28:28That is all from Close Calls. See you next time.
