0:04:24 > 0:04:25- It was a wooden fort.

0:04:27 > 0:04:33- Cardigan Castle is famous for - hosting the first ever eisteddfod.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- That was held by the Lord Rhys.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40- Lord Rhys came to Cardigan in 1171.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44- He decided he wanted to build - a brand-new castle.

0:04:44 > 0:04:50- He was the first Welshman - to build a castle from stone.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01- To celebrate finishing the - construction, he held an eisteddfod.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20- It's not "Ynys Aberteifi" - but Cardigan Island. I'm learning!

0:17:36 > 0:17:39- ..to learn - some of the abbey's history.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41- I'm meeting Nia Siggins.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45- The abbey was established - in the 12th century.

0:17:45 > 0:17:50- Twelve monks and a friar - came here from France.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54- They came from a part of northern - France called Thiron-Gardais.

0:17:55 > 0:17:56- They established a priory here.

0:17:57 > 0:18:02- Within ten years, its status - was upgraded to that of an abbey.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05- Until the reign of Henry VIII...

0:18:05 > 0:18:11- ..it was a prosperous monastic - settlement, owning several farms.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14- They were also fishermen.

0:18:14 > 0:18:19- They introduced building techniques - that are unique to this area.

0:18:19 > 0:18:25- And then, after Henry VIII's - dissolution of the monasteries...

0:18:25 > 0:18:30- ..it was demolished - and sold off into private ownership.

0:18:42 > 0:18:47- A Shakespeare Company - performs here every year.
