0:07:16 > 0:07:18- I think Osian got a bit of abuse - at the back...

0:08:50 > 0:08:54- There's a brilliant team - of hard-working leaders...

0:08:54 > 0:08:56- ..behind the youngsters.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00- That's true in so many clubs - - that's what keeps the YFC going.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03- That support is constant.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07- I'm sure some of the young members - will remember this forever.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40- Subtitles- - Subtitles

0:09:44 > 0:09:45- Welcome back.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49- With milk prices in the headlines - since the start of the year...

0:09:49 > 0:09:55- ..Agrisgop has considered setting up - a dairy producers' organization...

0:09:55 > 0:09:59- ..with the intention of - discussing prices with processors.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01- Daloni has more.

0:10:05 > 0:10:10- This group has come about - through a Farming Connect scheme...

0:10:10 > 0:10:14- ..to discuss the dairy producers' - organization or DPO.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17- The aim is to give a strong voice - to dairy farmers...

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- ..in discussions with processors.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24- The group's spokesperson, and - NFU Cymru's Milk Board Chairman...

0:10:25 > 0:10:27- ..is Aled Jones.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31- Aled milks 300 cows - here on Hendy farm, Caernarfon.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35- The group came together - almost two years ago.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39- The group's been researching - into DPOs.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- We've done a lot of work.

0:10:41 > 0:10:47- We're also lucky to have received - sponsorship from AHDB Dairy...

0:10:48 > 0:10:53- ..to commission a report - on this subject.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56- That report - has been published recently.

0:10:57 > 0:10:58- What's next?

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- We'll use the report...

0:11:01 > 0:11:07- ..to try and teach - Welsh milk producers about DPOs...

0:11:08 > 0:11:10- ..but more and that...

0:11:10 > 0:11:14- ..the implications of forming a DPO.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16- What work needs to be done.

0:11:16 > 0:11:22- What the advantages and stumbling - blocks are before starting.

0:11:22 > 0:11:28- Then, once that vision is clear, - that we begin forming DPOs.

0:11:29 > 0:11:34- What will a DPO do - that's different to what unions do?

0:11:35 > 0:11:40- A DPO has a legal right - to represent farmers.

0:11:40 > 0:11:46- An union is a lobbying group.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49- It can't represent farmers...

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- ..in discussions - on prices and so on.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57- DPOs have been a success - all over Europe.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00- But can that be replicated - in Wales?

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- Tom Jones from Maes Mawr Farm, - Llanfechell...

0:12:04 > 0:12:09- ..is a former Dairy Crest director - and is also a member of Agrisgop.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14- In parts of Germany especially...

0:12:14 > 0:12:19- ..farmers - who supply private companies...

0:12:19 > 0:12:21- ..come together as a group...

0:12:21 > 0:12:26- ..and draw up group contracts - with the buyers...

0:12:26 > 0:12:28- ..rather than individual ones.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31- In Germany too...

0:12:31 > 0:12:34- ..there's a body...

0:12:34 > 0:12:38- ..which oversees all the DPOs.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40- That gives them more power...

0:12:40 > 0:12:45- ..in the way they go about - selling milk to these companies.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49- Do you think such a scheme - would work in Wales?

0:12:50 > 0:12:53- Let's look at what we have - at the moment.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55- Here's an example.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59- A farmer from Anglesey - received a letter a few days ago...

0:12:59 > 0:13:04- ..saying that the price of his milk - was going down to 16p in May.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07- There wasn't much discussion there.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11- It was more or less - a diktat from the company...

0:13:11 > 0:13:14- ..saying this is the price in May.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17- This is before - the seasonal adjustment in price.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19- Over the last few weeks...

0:13:20 > 0:13:24- ..we've heard about Tata losing - 1 million a day in Port Talbot.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27- It's a difficult situation there.

0:13:27 > 0:13:29- Across Britain...

0:13:29 > 0:13:34- ..dairy farmers are currently losing - more than 1 million a day.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39- Agrisgop's facilitator - is Geraint Hughes.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44- I sensed there was interest - across Wales to look into DPOs.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47- People were aware - that it was a model...

0:13:47 > 0:13:52- ..that some European countries - had used successfully.

0:13:52 > 0:13:57- There was very little information - about it in Britain.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02- The members must now increase - awareness and understanding...

0:14:02 > 0:14:04- ..of what the DPO model can offer...

0:14:05 > 0:14:08- ..not only for farmers - but for processors too.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12- The processing company - Dairy Crest...

0:14:12 > 0:14:16- ..is the only company in Britain - which offers the DPO service.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- Gareth Richards - has been part of the group.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23- He farms Alltyfyrddin, Abergwili.

0:14:24 > 0:14:30- The advantages - are that farms can join forces.

0:14:31 > 0:14:36- The group can then discuss - with the processor on their behalf.

0:14:36 > 0:14:43- The disadvantage would be if - the group wanted to set up a DPO...

0:14:43 > 0:14:48- ..and then finds out that - the processor wouldn't accept it.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51- They're not duty-bound - to accept it.

0:14:52 > 0:14:58- Some people have said that this is - the wrong time to set up a DPO.

0:14:58 > 0:15:03- But to start off, - we have to have producers...

0:15:03 > 0:15:08- ..to get used - to wanting to join forces.

0:15:08 > 0:15:12- This is the best time to do it - with prices so low.

0:15:13 > 0:15:18- In a while, when milk prices - hopefully start to get better...

0:15:18 > 0:15:21- ..and production decreases...

0:15:21 > 0:15:24- ..the processors will see...

0:15:25 > 0:15:28- ..what the advantages are for them.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33- It's something - that will develop slowly.

0:15:34 > 0:15:39- It will gather a bit of momentum - as it goes on.

0:15:39 > 0:15:43- This isn't something - we can do tomorrow.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46- It needs time to develop.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51- With the dairy industry suffering - over the past year and a half...

0:15:51 > 0:15:55- ..how much of a help - would DPOs be in Wales?

0:15:55 > 0:15:59- I accept - that the period we're in now...

0:15:59 > 0:16:02- ..is the hardest we've been in - for many a year.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07- Having a DPO today - wouldn't have made much difference.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11- We have to look into this now...

0:16:11 > 0:16:14- ..so when we're - in this situation again...

0:16:14 > 0:16:17- ..a stronger DPO - would have been set up.

0:16:18 > 0:16:22- The DPO is a structure - that would give the producer...

0:16:22 > 0:16:27- ..a bit more power - than in the current situation.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32- A copy of Agrisgop's report - is available at AHDB Dairy.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35- The website address is below.

0:16:45 > 0:16:49- The Welsh Black - is the iconic cattle breed in Wales.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- To ensure the breed lives on...

0:16:52 > 0:16:55- ..it's crucial that committed - young people farm them.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05- Angharad Davies - is a 17-year-old girl...

0:17:05 > 0:17:09- ..from Brynglas Farm, Ponterwyd, - Ceredigion.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11- She's been raised - among the Welsh Blacks.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15- The breed's been in the family - for almost 70 years.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23- Angharad, if I can interrupt.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26- Tell me about him. - He looks quite a steer.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30- He'll be going to the Winter Fair, - hopefully.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32- You're thinking about that now, - in April.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35- Yes, if they look good - when they're born...

0:17:35 > 0:17:39- ..we think about taking them - to the Winter Fair.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42- If they're not bulls, - they can be steers.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46- Do you mostly focus on Welsh Blacks - in terms of exhibiting?

0:17:46 > 0:17:50- We have Welsh Blacks - in the summer shows.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54- We have a lot of cattle - that are...

0:17:54 > 0:17:55- ..cross-breeds.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58- For the Winter Fair, - we rear a lot of them ourselves.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01- A lot are Welsh Black cross-breeds.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04- Others are Lim-cross - and Belgian-cross too.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07- For how long - have you exhibited them?

0:18:07 > 0:18:09- As long as I can remember.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13- We have photos of me exhibiting - at six years old.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17- Are you not scared at all? - You haven't had any bad experiences?

0:18:17 > 0:18:19- I'm never scared of them.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22- I'm careful around them - but never scared.

0:18:23 > 0:18:24- I'll let you carry on.

0:18:24 > 0:18:25- I'll let you carry on.- - Thank you.

0:18:27 > 0:18:28- More wind?

0:18:28 > 0:18:30- More wind?- - If you want, OK.

0:18:32 > 0:18:33- Thanks.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37- I've got a proper job at last - - a switchman!

0:18:45 > 0:18:47- Speak to her as you go.

0:18:51 > 0:18:52- Come on.

0:18:53 > 0:18:54- Very nice, Angharad.

0:18:55 > 0:18:56- What about her?

0:18:56 > 0:19:01- She's a heifer I showed in the YFC's - with calf competition last year.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05- Do you exhibit her often?

0:19:05 > 0:19:09- Before the Winter Fair, yes, - but lambing's taken over now.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13- She'll be shown more - before the Royal Welsh.

0:19:13 > 0:19:18- What's the balance like between the - commercial and Welsh Black cattle?

0:19:18 > 0:19:21- How many Welsh Black cattle - do you have?

0:19:21 > 0:19:25- Ten Welsh Black breeding cows - and four or five commercials.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28- But the Welsh Blacks take priority.

0:19:28 > 0:19:32- Is that - because they suit your type of farm?

0:19:32 > 0:19:36- It's a hill farm, so you need - something tough to handle it.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48- The whole family - shares the interest in Welsh Blacks.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51- They also keep - different commercial breeds...

0:19:51 > 0:19:55- ..as well as 600 Welsh Mountain - and Speckled Face sheep.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01- We're tenants.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04- We've been here for 19 years.

0:20:05 > 0:20:09- So, I'd say, Meinir, that there's - more work here than for one person.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12- Does that mean - you do a lot of farming as well?

0:20:13 > 0:20:15- I try to help out a bit.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18- I prefer helping out - with the sheep than the cattle.

0:20:19 > 0:20:20- Yes.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23- Especially now during lambing.

0:20:23 > 0:20:24- I can do a lot.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28- The Speckled Face - is the native breed of this area.

0:20:29 > 0:20:30- Is that what's here mostly?

0:20:30 > 0:20:32- Is that what's here mostly?- - Yes.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36- But I have trouble finding ones - that are hardy enough for the farm.

0:20:36 > 0:20:41- So I buy a hardy Welsh ram...

0:20:41 > 0:20:45- ..mate it with a few Speckled Face - sheep and keep the females.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48- Then I go back - to Speckled Face rams.

0:20:48 > 0:20:52- In two generations, - there's no trace of a Welsh ram.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55- They have good coats - and they survive.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58- A lot of them need some rigour.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01- How much pleasure - does it give you...

0:21:02 > 0:21:04- ..to see Angharad - follow in your footsteps...

0:21:05 > 0:21:08- ..and show such interest, - especially in Welsh Blacks?

0:21:08 > 0:21:10- It gives us a lot of pleasure...

0:21:11 > 0:21:13- ..especially - in the past two weeks...

0:21:13 > 0:21:18- ..when she competed as part - of the Black Stars team in Malvern.

0:21:18 > 0:21:22- It was a national competition...

0:21:23 > 0:21:27- ..or international, as a team - from Canada was competing there too.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29- They came third.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32- I was very proud.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36- We're all getting older.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39- What's the future for you?

0:21:39 > 0:21:43- Your daughter - will be going to college.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48- Wherever Angharad goes in her - career, she'll have Welsh Blacks.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50- The Welsh Blacks - will never be far away.

0:21:51 > 0:21:52- They're a part of the family.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54- They're a part of the family.- - They are.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03- This is a crucial year for you - as you have A level exams.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05- In what subjects?

0:22:05 > 0:22:07- Welsh, Textiles and Agriculture.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09- Do you intend to be a farmer...

0:22:10 > 0:22:13- ..or are you scratching your head - wondering what to do?

0:22:13 > 0:22:16- There's been - a lot of head scratching.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19- My intention is to be - a primary school teacher.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22- I hope to go - to Trinity College, Carmarthen.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25- I want to keep the herd - and the farm going too.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33- That's all for this programme.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36- It's been great visiting Ponterwyd.

0:22:36 > 0:22:41- Despite what the weather, - market prices and regulations...

0:22:41 > 0:22:44- ..throw at us, we're still here.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46- They can't do without us.
