0:03:08 > 0:03:10- ..is so important for your business.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11- ..is so important for your business.- - It's very important.

0:03:12 > 0:03:13- Very important.

0:03:14 > 0:03:19- You wouldn't believe how much - I have to write about every cow.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22- We've now got over 300.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25- Think about all the work - involved with those...

0:03:25 > 0:03:29- ..let alone the ones yet to come.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32- But I like to do it.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35- It's been a tough time - in terms of milk prices.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39- Who do you sell milk to? - Are you in the right place?

0:03:39 > 0:03:43- This period will go down in history - for dairy farmers.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47- We sell milk directly - to Muller Milk.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49- We're receiving a bonus...

0:03:55 > 0:04:00- The milk cheque reached - its lowest point at around 21p.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03- That was when it was at its lowest.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08- The family have looked very closely - at the business.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11- Every detail has been assessed.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15- On average, every cow produces - around 12,000 litres a year.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19- There are also - around 230 young stock here.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26- Tomos, I know you've changed - the business a lot in recent years.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30- One change - is to milk three times a day.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33- Why did you decide to do that?

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- What changes have you seen - because of that?

0:04:36 > 0:04:40- Back in summer 2014...

0:04:41 > 0:04:43- ..we employed another worker here.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46- We just saw an opportunity.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49- Over winter, the milk - was just coming and coming.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51- It wasn't overnight.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53- The system - was coming along nicely.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57- In the spring, we decided - to keep the cattle inside.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01- We saw it as an opportunity - to go for it.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04- The price of milk was good.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08- We added another 70-80 cattle...

0:05:09 > 0:05:13- ..and kept the entire herd inside - through the spring.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16- In three years...

0:05:16 > 0:05:21- ..we've gone from selling - 1.5 million litres to 4 million...

0:05:21 > 0:05:23- ..with the same amount of land.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25- Our only investment...

0:05:26 > 0:05:31- ..is one shed to hold 80 cattle - and one silage clamp.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36- The only difference - is milking three times a day...

0:05:37 > 0:05:39- ..and giving them more feed.

0:05:39 > 0:05:44- When keeping the cattle inside, - we could increase the herd.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46- There wasn't quite enough land.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51- We've decreased the amount - of silage that each cow eats.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54- Silage changes from day to day...

0:05:54 > 0:05:57- ..from season to season, - from year to year.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01- So that decreases the part of - the cow's diet that would change.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05- The diet of a cow that gives - 60 litres of milk shouldn't change.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08- The lack of changes - has improved the cows' health...

0:06:08 > 0:06:11- ..and increased production.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13- I think the entire system - works well.

0:06:14 > 0:06:19- There are two full-time and three - part-time employees on the farm.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24- Elin, Tomos's wife, is a teacher and - also contributes plenty to the farm.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29- Has this been an ambition for Tomos?

0:06:29 > 0:06:33- Yes, I think it's something - he's been aiming for all his life.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37- It's recognition for the farm...

0:06:37 > 0:06:40- ..for him and for the partnership.

0:06:41 > 0:06:46- It's come at a time when things - aren't too rosy in agriculture.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49- But it's nice to receive good news.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53- In terms of the recent changes - to the farm...

0:06:53 > 0:06:57- ..milking three times a day - and keeping more cattle...

0:06:57 > 0:06:59- ..how has that changed your life?

0:06:59 > 0:07:03- It might sound ironic - but milking three times a day...

0:07:03 > 0:07:06- ..has improved - our family's quality of life.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10- We've had to employ more staff.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14- Tomos isn't as tied to his work - as he was.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18- One of the girls is at school.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22- He'd start milking - when Mari came home from school.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25- Now, milking has stopped by then.

0:07:25 > 0:07:30- So he is more free now - to spend time with us and the girls.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34- In a way, - one of the best things he's done...

0:07:34 > 0:07:36- ..is to milk three times a day.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39- For the girls...

0:07:39 > 0:07:43- ..how good is this environment - for them to grow up in?

0:07:43 > 0:07:45- They're very lucky.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47- They love being outside helping.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49- Seeing the calves.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52- They go out with Tomos - every chance they get.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57- The family obviously - take great pride in their stock...

0:07:57 > 0:07:58- ..and what they produce.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02- They want to ensure - they're always at the forefront.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- The dairy industry - is unstable at the moment.

0:08:06 > 0:08:11- I have plans, but I'm not sure - when they'll be realized.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14- Maybe in the next year.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18- We need to change - the way we rear the heifers.

0:08:18 > 0:08:23- We need a slicker, - better system there.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27- The parlour's getting older. - We'll need a new one soon.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30- I'm not sure if there'll be people - in the parlour.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33- A year ago, I'd have said yes.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37- I'm not sure. - Technology's changing all the time.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41- Turning to you, as proud parents...

0:08:42 > 0:08:47- ..it must be nice to know that - the future is in very safe hands...

0:08:47 > 0:08:51- ..something that's been recognized - by others in the industry.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53- It's very nice.

0:08:53 > 0:08:57- I hope that after the - two granddaughters have grown up...

0:08:57 > 0:09:00- ..they'll want to be part - of the business.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04- You three seem very happy - working together.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06- That's so nice to see.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10- It's not like that every day!

0:09:10 > 0:09:11- Just like every family.

0:09:12 > 0:09:13- You're not here every day!

0:09:17 > 0:09:19- I think it's an exciting industry - to be in.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22- It's changing. It's exciting.

0:09:22 > 0:09:23- You move with the times.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27- A lot of new technology - is coming into dairy farming.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31- It's up to you if you're going - to use it or keep things simple.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34- I think it's a good industry - to be in.

0:09:36 > 0:09:37- That's it for now.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41- After the break, - we visit the Pembrokeshire Show...

0:09:41 > 0:09:44- ..and we meet the young family - who live here...

0:09:47 > 0:09:48- See you in a minute.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22- This is all new.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24- Coming into this, here.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28- How did it start with the sheep?

0:11:29 > 0:11:34- Martin said in Glanrafon - that we should have sheep.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37- That we should have - our own sheep on our own land.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41- Mum said she wanted something - that was nice to look at.

0:11:41 > 0:11:43- That was - where the Hampshires came in.

0:11:43 > 0:11:48- A few years ago, we decided we - wanted a breed of our own as well.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50- That's where the Blue Texels - came in.

0:12:35 > 0:12:41- In terms of the sheep, what's your - work pattern? What do you work for?

0:12:41 > 0:12:44- We're trying to go more pedigree - than anything else.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47- More Blue Texels - and Beltex rams to sell.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50- That's our next step, I think.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54- We'll keep the Hampshires - where they are.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58- There's a market to sell around five - or six rams from them each year.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01- Blue Texels are in demand now.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05- We're going to up those - to around 100 pedigree sheep.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08- We'll then try to sell the rams - and sheep.

0:13:08 > 0:13:12- Why are Blue Texels - in such demand now?

0:13:12 > 0:13:14- There are different points.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21- They have good points.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24- We try to use them - to cross with the ewe lambs...

0:13:24 > 0:13:26- ..because they're easy to lamb.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29- They still have a good carcass.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32- If you cross them over - the white sheep...

0:13:32 > 0:13:35- ..you get white lambs - but with the blue gene.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38- Where do you sell the sheep?

0:13:39 > 0:13:45- The pedigree sheep are sold at big - sales like Carlisle and Worcester.

0:13:45 > 0:13:49- The Hampshires - only have one big sale.

0:13:49 > 0:13:54- That's Stratford or there is a place - to sell them in Builth.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57- That's a lamb sale in Builth.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00- All of our commercial sheep - are sold at auction.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03- What do you do with your cattle?

0:14:04 > 0:14:09- We exhibit our commercial cattle - at winter shows and fairs.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12- That is why they are bred.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16- We go to the Show Potential shows.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- Anything that doesn't make the cut - is sold as store cattle.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36- At 38 years old, - he knows what's what.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42- The work is never-ending, Martin.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45- Yes, it's hard to keep - their feet in check.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48- We try to put the sheep - through the footbath often.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50- That keeps the feet sound.

0:14:50 > 0:14:50- And then they're straight out?

0:14:50 > 0:14:52- And then they're straight out?- - Yes, indeed.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56- If it's wet, - we keep them in a while.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59- What do you have here now? - The Blue Texels first.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01- The Blue Texels went out first.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03- We want to flush embryos - out of them.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07- We're going to implant the embryos - in these sheep.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09- Are they Texel cross?

0:15:09 > 0:15:11- They're Texel cross Lleyn.

0:15:11 > 0:15:12- Good sheep then.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15- They're big sheep - with plenty of milk.
