0:00:24 > 0:00:26- ..on the outskirts of Carmarthen.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31- This is a chance to discuss - the future of the dairy sector...

0:00:31 > 0:00:33- ..and also to celebrate it.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35- In addition, - there's the show itself.

0:00:35 > 0:00:40- We'll find out later who is crowned - queen of the dairy cattle.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43- Alun will be - in the Colwyn Bay area...

0:00:44 > 0:00:50- ..to see how the council and local - food producers are working together.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53- We'll have the third question - in our competition.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58- This is one of the last shows - of the season for dairy cattle.

0:00:58 > 0:01:03- With many cattle already inside - in preparation for winter...

0:01:03 > 0:01:08- ..it's great to leave - the farm paperwork behind and relax.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11- But preparing cattle to show here - is hard work.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13- Daloni tells us more.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21- Rhosygadair Fawr Farm - in Blaenannerch, Cardigan...

0:01:21 > 0:01:24- ..is home to - Phillip and Lorenza Reed...

0:01:25 > 0:01:28- ..and their children - Steffan, Rebecca and Sion.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32- The family has kept a dairy herd - for twelve years.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36- Over 300 cows - are now milked in their parlour.

0:01:36 > 0:01:41- Most are Ayrshire cattle, but there - are some Holsteins in the herd.

0:01:43 > 0:01:48- The first herd I bought was from - Castlemartin in Pembrokeshire...

0:01:48 > 0:01:49- ..the Gupton herd.

0:01:50 > 0:01:55- We'd had them for 18 months when - the Ayrshire Society telephoned...

0:01:56 > 0:01:59- ..to discuss the Queen's herd, - the Windsor herd.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02- I told them I'd buy ten or a dozen.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06- That was all I needed. - Our buildings were already full.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10- They said, "They have to go - in one package, 180-odd of them".

0:02:10 > 0:02:13- I spoke to a dealer friend of mine.

0:02:13 > 0:02:17- He said, "Bid low. They'll sell - them, they've got no money worries".

0:02:17 > 0:02:19- We both went up.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23- Lorenza was furious - that I was thinking of buying them.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25- I said I'd just go and see them.

0:02:25 > 0:02:26- I went and I put in a bid.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30- Soon after, I took the family - to Center Parcs.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32- I said to Lorenza, - "We'll do a little detour.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35- "You can go to Windsor - to see the cows."

0:02:35 > 0:02:39- It wasn't a little detour - it was - a three or four-hour detour.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44- As we were being shown the herd, - the Duke appeared.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47- He came over to speak to us.

0:02:47 > 0:02:52- He said "You've got the Queen's - consent. The cows are yours."

0:02:52 > 0:02:55- Lorenza's jaw hit the floor!

0:02:55 > 0:02:57- She didn't know I'd bid for them.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- That's how I ended up - with the Queen's herd.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04- When they came we were full. - We had to build another shed.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07- They're good cattle, fair play.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10- I hope she'll come - and buy some back from me.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13- I'll charge her more - than I paid for them.

0:03:13 > 0:03:18- I want something that lasts and - that's certainly true of Ayrshires.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21- They don't produce - as much as Holsteins...

0:03:21 > 0:03:24- ..but Ayrshire cows are high quality - and they last.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28- They have good feet, they calve well - and they produce quality milk.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30- They tick all the boxes for us.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35- Although the family has only milked - for a relatively short time...

0:03:36 > 0:03:38- ..they have faced challenges.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40- The two main problems - milk producers face...

0:03:41 > 0:03:46- ..are the volatile price of milk - which goes up and down so much...

0:03:46 > 0:03:47- ..and staff.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51- Good staff are in short supply.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56- As regards the price of milk...

0:03:57 > 0:04:01- ..I would prefer the company - receiving the milk to say...

0:04:01 > 0:04:04- .."You can produce X litres per day" - and stick to that.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09- The milk company would know how - much milk was coming in each day...

0:04:09 > 0:04:11- ..and they could market it better.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14- A fluctuating price - doesn't benefit anyone.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18- The trouble is that farmers - are their own worst enemies.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21- If the price of milk goes up, - what do we do?

0:04:21 > 0:04:24- We think "The price is good, - we'll milk more".

0:04:24 > 0:04:27- Then there's too much milk - and the price falls.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29- It's the same with everything.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33- If too much of a product - is available, the price drops.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36- If it's in short supply, - the price rises.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40- It's not rocket science! - We're our own worst enemies.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45- Phil is proud - of his Ayrshire cattle...

0:04:46 > 0:04:48- ..and enjoys taking them - from show to show.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- Before every show, there's - preparation work to be done.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57- We're taking one second-calver, - to make things easier.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00- They say it's like a shop window.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04- If someone is looking to buy - Ayrshire cattle...

0:05:04 > 0:05:07- ..they can come to the stand - or stalls...

0:05:07 > 0:05:11- ..and talk to the owners - of the cattle that take their fancy.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15- It is a good place - to advertise your stock.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17- She doesn't get - any special treatment.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20- She's in with the rest of the herd.

0:05:20 > 0:05:25- All that happens is we wash her - a few days before the show.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28- That's all the pampering she gets - - a shampoo and a shave.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38- The dairy herd takes up most - of the time at Rhosygadair Fawr...

0:05:39 > 0:05:42- ..but the farm - is also home to many other animals.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45- It's nice for us and the staff...

0:05:45 > 0:05:49- ..to see something other than - a dairy cow occasionally...

0:05:50 > 0:05:54- ..be it a sheep, a pig, - a chicken, a goose or a duck.

0:05:57 > 0:05:58- It gives you a break.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01- Every animal - has a different nature.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05- Watching these pigs running around - is interesting.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10- It helps pass the time of day.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13- We always rear turkeys - for Christmas.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17- We keep a dozen to fifteen - for the family and relatives.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20- Sion went to a sale in Synod Inn...

0:06:20 > 0:06:24- ..and he came back with seven - black turkeys, two pheasants...

0:06:24 > 0:06:26- ..and two peacocks.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30- He's into poultry. - I liked birds when I was young.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33- I used to keep budgies. - Budgies of all things!

0:06:33 > 0:06:36- Sion looks like he might be - a chip off the old block.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40- I don't know how the black turkeys - will turn out at Christmas.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43- They won't have breasts, - they're all legs.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46- They run around the yard - like Usain Bolt.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49- There's not much meat on them, - just like him!

0:06:51 > 0:06:55- With all these animals, - there's plenty of work on the farm.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59- Along with Phillip and Lorenza - and two full-time workers...

0:06:59 > 0:07:04- ..all the children are involved - and have their own responsibilities.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07- I like the dairy cattle.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10- Steffan likes working - on the tractors and the land.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14- Sion works with the sheep - and the store lambs.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18- I do the sheep and the poultry.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20- Dad buys them and I look after them.

0:07:21 > 0:07:26- I studied agricultural engineering - at Harper Adams for four years.

0:07:27 > 0:07:33- I've just graduated and returned - here to look after the machinery...

0:07:33 > 0:07:36- ..to make sure everything - keeps running smoothly.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41- The Welsh Dairy Show - is Phillip's final show of the year.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44- What are the hopes?

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- I'm looking forward - to meeting up with my pals.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54- I don't want to make predictions - because it'll all go wrong.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57- Every time I claim - to have a good heifer...

0:07:57 > 0:07:59- ..she ends up bottom of her class.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03- I'll just say - that she should do well.

0:08:04 > 0:08:05- No more than that.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08- I'm hoping for a red rosette, - if not more.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18- A chance for a break, finally?

0:08:18 > 0:08:20- My feet are pretty tired.

0:08:20 > 0:08:21- How did it go?

0:08:22 > 0:08:23- It went OK, I think.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27- She's such a big heifer, - she'll either be first or last.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31- The judge today is a nice lad. - I've nothing against him.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36- He told me she was carrying - too much weight in the brisket area.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40- He likes the Ayrshire breed - to be more compact and smaller.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43- Maybe he's got - smaller cubicles at home.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49- If everyone knew who was going - to win, you wouldn't have a show.

0:08:49 > 0:08:50- You learn to win and lose.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55- Next time, it could be my turn.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57- Big celebrations then.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59- More than tonight, certainly.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03- How do you benefit from showing?

0:09:03 > 0:09:07- Not at all. It's a hobby. - Every hobby involves spending money.

0:09:08 > 0:09:13- But you do make new friends and - sometimes the odd farmer comes up...

0:09:13 > 0:09:16- ..and asks - if you have any animals for sale.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20- In the Royal Welsh this year, - I was approached by two farmers.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23- One wanted to buy dairy cows.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- That was a no-go because - I wanted milk in the tank.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31- The other one wanted - in-calf heifers...

0:09:31 > 0:09:34- ..and I sold him 16 - just after the Royal Welsh.

0:09:34 > 0:09:34- Tidy.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36- Tidy.- - It's an important shop window.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38- He asked for more today.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43- Don't tell the wife. She'll want - to sell him even more of them.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- That's the point - of bringing animals to a show.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49- The public also like to see them.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54- Oh, yes. Without the cattle - there'd be no show.

0:10:03 > 0:10:04- That's it for part one.

0:10:04 > 0:10:09- Stay with us for the announcement - of the show's supreme champion.

0:10:10 > 0:10:15- Alun will be in Colwyn Bay looking - at a ground-breaking new scheme.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17- See you in two minutes.

0:10:18 > 0:10:18- .

0:10:22 > 0:10:22- Subtitles

0:10:22 > 0:10:24- Subtitles- - Subtitles

0:10:26 > 0:10:29- Welcome back - to Wales' main dairy show.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33- The competing is in full swing. - The cattle are resplendent.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37- But there's more to this show - than just the competing.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39- There's something here - for everybody.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52- As this year's show - is being held during half-term...

0:10:52 > 0:10:55- ..the committee held a competition - for local children...

0:10:56 > 0:10:58- ..to advertise the event.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02- The winners were given their prizes - in the ring.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07- Over the last two years, dairy - farmers have seen a huge fall...

0:11:07 > 0:11:10- ..in the price they receive - for milk.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15- There is hope, with prices rising - gradually over the last few months.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19- What is the outlook for the future?

0:11:20 > 0:11:23- How are things looking at the moment - in the industry?

0:11:23 > 0:11:26- Things are looking promising.

0:11:26 > 0:11:31- The reason is that the milk supply - has fallen, so there's a shortage.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35- When the processors - have seen a shortage...

0:11:35 > 0:11:40- ..they have increased prices - to try and ensure a greater supply.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42- What about - the weakness of the pound?

0:11:42 > 0:11:46- That's the second factor - that's helped the market.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50- Following the June referendum, - the pound has weakened.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53- A weak pound always helps farmers.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57- Now we can foresee a situation - when there'll be more money...

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- ..coming into bank accounts.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- It's extremely important - farmers think carefully...

0:12:02 > 0:12:04- ..what use to make of that money.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07- Are there bills - that need to be paid?

0:12:07 > 0:12:10- They could make bigger repayments - on bank loans.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13- There might be plans - to invest more in the farm.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- They need to plan carefully - how to use the money that comes in.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21- Throughout the world, - demand is rising...

0:12:22 > 0:12:24- ..about two per cent a year.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29- That hasn't changed much recently...

0:12:30 > 0:12:32- ..so that's a good start.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36- One of the big problems - over the last two or three years...

0:12:36 > 0:12:37- ..is overproduction.

0:12:38 > 0:12:43- There's too much milk - compared with the demand.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47- As we know, and as we always - hear in the media...

0:12:47 > 0:12:52- ..butter has more than doubled, - cream has almost trebled...

0:12:53 > 0:12:56- ..and cheese has doubled in price.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59- That's more than 1,000 a tonne...

0:13:00 > 0:13:03- ..while some farmers have been - getting two or three pence extra...

0:13:04 > 0:13:06- ..for the last three months.

0:13:06 > 0:13:12- The price for our product - has been rising for several months.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17- We'll be very lucky if we're on - 25 pence by the end of the year.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22- Lots of people thought - we'd be hitting that now.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24- If you look at the markets...

0:13:24 > 0:13:28- ..the market has turned round - since the start of the summer.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32- The prices - are only starting to rise now.

0:13:32 > 0:13:37- We see that the amount - coming to Welsh dairy farmers...

0:13:37 > 0:13:42- ..is about - 6.7 million a month short.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46- The market is lagging far behind.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52- The number of markets and shops - selling local produce...

0:13:52 > 0:13:54- ..is increasing in Wales.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57- Conwy Council - have seen an opportunity...

0:13:57 > 0:14:01- ..to promote local companies - by opening a shop in Colwyn Bay.

0:14:01 > 0:14:02- Alun has the story.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06- You only need to pop - to a supermarket...

0:14:06 > 0:14:09- ..to see how international - the food market is.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- But these days, there's a growing - emphasis on sustainability...

0:14:13 > 0:14:16- ..and fresh, local, - seasonal produce.

0:14:16 > 0:14:21- At Naturally Conwy Produce Market, - almost everything on sale...

0:14:21 > 0:14:23- ..is grown within 20 miles - of this site.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27- I'm looking forward to finding - something tasty to have...

0:14:28 > 0:14:30- ..with a cuppa back at Cae Coch.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35- This trial venture is being run - by local producers...

0:14:35 > 0:14:38- ..and Conwy County Council - to promote local produce.

0:14:38 > 0:14:43- The idea came following discussions - at the Conwy Food Forum last June.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48- Rhys Evans is the council official - with the task of launching it.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53- The idea came about - because of a chat we had...

0:14:53 > 0:14:57- ..with the Cywain Group - and Communities First.

0:14:57 > 0:15:02- Communities First own the shop - and the space became available.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07- We pounced on the opportunity - to take over.

0:15:07 > 0:15:12- How have the customers reacted - to the products on offer?

0:15:12 > 0:15:14- It's very promising.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17- We've been here - for seven or eight weeks...

0:15:17 > 0:15:21- ..and it's great to see so many - coming back week after week.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24- They love the produce - we have for sale here.

0:15:24 > 0:15:28- What is also pleasing is the number - of people coming in here...

0:15:28 > 0:15:31- ..to practise their Welsh.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33- You've put producers - face to face here.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37- It could have been a case of - competition rather than cooperation.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40- I'm glad to say it's cooperation.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43- Producers are - selling each others' products.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47- They are happy to recount - the background of the products.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51- People like to hear that background.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55- It really is working here. - We're very lucky.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59- As part of the deal, - we agreed to invite...

0:15:59 > 0:16:04- ..local restaurant - and hotel owners into the shop.

0:16:04 > 0:16:09- We do three events over the four - months to meet the producers...
