0:00:27 > 0:00:29APPLAUSE

0:07:57 > 0:07:59I think the gay community in Derry is quite close, anyway,

0:07:59 > 0:08:03and very welcoming on days like this and I feel like...

0:08:03 > 0:08:05Cos it's kind of been emotional,

0:08:05 > 0:08:06I guess, my family comes out,

0:08:06 > 0:08:08my entire family comes out

0:08:08 > 0:08:09to celebrate it.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12My mum's actually in the samba band

0:08:12 > 0:08:13today with her boyfriend so...

0:08:13 > 0:08:15I think it's a family thing, anyway.

0:08:15 > 0:08:16How does that make you feel,

0:08:16 > 0:08:18that your family's supporting you today?

0:08:18 > 0:08:21I mean, I've always felt very accepting of my family,

0:08:21 > 0:08:23but I think on a specific day like this, it's always...

0:08:23 > 0:08:25I feel very lucky that I have the family I do

0:08:25 > 0:08:26and that they're so supportive.

0:09:36 > 0:09:41I had horrible experiences with high school, not primary school,

0:09:41 > 0:09:45but from first year right up until the fifth year, I was bullied.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48It was kind of on and off, but pretty much the whole way through

0:09:48 > 0:09:52and I didn't want to be there and I was having a hard time at home

0:09:52 > 0:09:54so I didn't want to be there, either,

0:09:54 > 0:09:56and it kind of just seemed like there was nowhere to go.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00Do you think it's essential that schools offer more workshops

0:10:00 > 0:10:02and support events to young people?

0:10:02 > 0:10:04100%, because my whole five years of being in that school,

0:10:04 > 0:10:06there was not one thing about it.

0:10:06 > 0:10:11I mean, they did, you know, safe sex talks and stuff like that,

0:10:11 > 0:10:14but that was all regarding straight couples.

0:10:14 > 0:10:20There was never anything about awareness of LGBT people.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23There was nothing - no workshops, nothing.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26My school didn't have a lot to offer and I knew...

0:10:26 > 0:10:28I know that a lot of other schools are like that, too.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51Sex is what you were born with and gender is how you express yourself.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14"This is my identity and it doesn't matter

0:11:14 > 0:11:15"who I'm in a relationship with..."

0:11:28 > 0:11:32We know that there are other LGBT awareness workshops

0:11:32 > 0:11:34running in other schools in Northern Ireland, Declan,

0:11:34 > 0:11:37but what's different about the ShoutOut model?

0:11:37 > 0:11:40ShoutOut has had a lot of success in the south up till now

0:11:40 > 0:11:44and I think it's because it doesn't do campaigning,

0:11:44 > 0:11:45it's not politically engaged.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47It is just going in to address

0:11:47 > 0:11:49the issues at hand of bullying

0:11:49 > 0:11:53and I think that the classroom setting and having some conversation

0:11:53 > 0:11:55and dialogue around it makes it different as well.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58I knew I wasn't straight and I knew I wasn't gay.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39You know yourself better than anybody else

0:12:39 > 0:12:41and once you're comfortable, then that's up to you.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18- You're so welcome.- Thanks for having us, it's great to be here.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20The big question, Mal - has it All Worked Out?

0:16:20 > 0:16:21Yes, I guess it has, yeah.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24We've had a hectic two years since we released All Works Out

0:16:24 > 0:16:25and of course Getting Through,

0:16:25 > 0:16:29the album went gold in Dublin, yeah,

0:16:29 > 0:16:31we've got to tour all around the world

0:16:31 > 0:16:34and now we're back with a new album, Ghosts.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36We just finished up in Texas, we recorded that over there.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39We spent five weeks out there recording the album

0:16:39 > 0:16:42and, yeah, just releasing it now and can't wait to get it out.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44- Our fourth album, believe it or not. - That's amazing, isn't it?

0:16:44 > 0:16:46But without doubt,

0:16:46 > 0:16:49It All Works Out and Getting Through were the big breakthroughs for you.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51- Definitely.- So, how did you approach the follow-up?

0:16:51 > 0:16:54First, it's always organic, like. We just...

0:16:54 > 0:16:57We kind of just follow our gut instinct

0:16:57 > 0:17:01and with Getting Through, it's an album we're very proud of.

0:17:01 > 0:17:06I guess it's more raucous and on this album,

0:17:06 > 0:17:09there's more textures and I think the songs are more crafted

0:17:09 > 0:17:11and it's an album I'm really, really excited about.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13And the first single, of course, is doing great on radio,

0:17:13 > 0:17:15- Elephant In The Room.- Absolutely.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17And tell me about that song

0:17:17 > 0:17:20because you have a real knack of writing anthemic songs

0:17:20 > 0:17:22that are real ear worms as well,

0:17:22 > 0:17:24that the audience will all ultimately sing back to you.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27Yeah, well, with Elephant In The Room,

0:17:27 > 0:17:31it's a song that's deeply personal to the band,

0:17:31 > 0:17:33but in saying that,

0:17:33 > 0:17:35when we were writing it and putting it on the album,

0:17:35 > 0:17:37we thought it would be a good anthem for mental health

0:17:37 > 0:17:41and for depression and anxiety

0:17:41 > 0:17:43and self-harm and suicide because I guess,

0:17:43 > 0:17:46for a long time, it's been the elephant in the room,

0:17:46 > 0:17:49people kind of tiptoeing around it and I guess with this song,

0:17:49 > 0:17:51we wanted to continue that conversation -

0:17:51 > 0:17:54get people to reach out, open up and talk to each other

0:17:54 > 0:17:56so that's what Elephant In The Room is about.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58Well, well done. It's certainly working.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27Frank was really a complete one-off.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30He was a little bit idiosyncratic from his early days.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34He was in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

0:18:34 > 0:18:38He was a military doctor and he was awarded the Military Cross

0:18:38 > 0:18:41in the field, which is pretty unusual,

0:18:41 > 0:18:42for his outstanding gallantry,

0:18:42 > 0:18:47his total disregard for bullets and bombs going off around him

0:18:47 > 0:18:50and he told me that what he was doing

0:18:50 > 0:18:54was making sure that men were not dying in pain.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58The experiences must have been extremely harrowing.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14They were portable only in the sense

0:19:14 > 0:19:18that you were an entrant in a world's strongest person contest.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21The first ones weighed 70kg.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25What Frank did was to miniaturise it.

0:19:25 > 0:19:30He developed the concept of the automatic external defibrillator,

0:19:30 > 0:19:32which, if you like, was foolproof and could be used by anyone.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50- RECORDED VOICE: - Press the shock button now.

0:24:09 > 0:24:14# Do you destroy everything you desire?

0:24:14 > 0:24:17# Ba-da-da

0:24:17 > 0:24:21# Coming in here like a ball of fire

0:24:21 > 0:24:24# Ba-da-da

0:24:24 > 0:24:29# Burning all the oxygen out the room

0:24:29 > 0:24:31# Ba-da-da

0:24:31 > 0:24:36# Heating up faster than a chemist's spoon

0:24:36 > 0:24:38# Ba-da-da

0:24:38 > 0:24:40# That feeling again

0:24:40 > 0:24:45# Is taking hold of you

0:24:45 > 0:24:47# You're feeling so down

0:24:48 > 0:24:52# You're feeling so blue

0:24:52 > 0:24:55# We don't talk about that

0:25:02 > 0:25:05# The elephant in the room

0:25:23 > 0:25:28# I'm feeling lost, I feel dejected

0:25:28 > 0:25:30# Ba-da-da

0:25:30 > 0:25:35# So isolated, disconnected

0:25:35 > 0:25:37# Ba-da-da

0:25:37 > 0:25:42# Self-denigrating, I'm obsessive

0:25:42 > 0:25:44# Ba-da-da

0:25:44 > 0:25:50# Just another clinical depressive

0:25:50 > 0:25:51# Ba-da-da

0:25:51 > 0:25:53# That feeling again

0:25:54 > 0:25:57# Is taking hold of you

0:26:02 > 0:26:05# You're feeling so blue

0:26:05 > 0:26:08# We don't talk about that

0:26:08 > 0:26:11# The elephant in the room

0:26:13 > 0:26:15# We don't talk about that

0:26:16 > 0:26:19# The elephant in the room

0:26:22 > 0:26:24# Can you hear me now?

0:26:24 > 0:26:26# Can you hear me now?

0:26:26 > 0:26:28# Can you hear me now?

0:26:28 > 0:26:31# Can you hear me now?

0:26:31 > 0:26:33# Can you hear me now?

0:26:50 > 0:26:52# That feeling again

0:26:54 > 0:26:56# Is taking hold of you

0:27:02 > 0:27:04# You're feeling so blue
