0:04:38 > 0:04:42- ..the vet found that he had many - other issues with his health.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45- He was both ill and depressed.

0:04:45 > 0:04:51- Many months of attention, care - and love at the centre in Newport...

0:04:51 > 0:04:55- ..transformed both his health - and personality.

0:04:56 > 0:05:01- Today, Zeus is an important part - of Carla and Mike's lives.

0:05:01 > 0:05:05- He also helped them - with a recent bereavement.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09- We found out that my Mum - had stage four terminal cancer.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13- In the nine months that we've had - Zeus, my Mum has passed away.

0:05:13 > 0:05:19- Zeus, Mike and I were like - a little unit, a little family.

0:05:19 > 0:05:25- Zeus has really helped me recover - from the loss of my Mum.

0:05:25 > 0:05:30- He loves playing with his - best friend, Hudson the Doberman...

0:05:31 > 0:05:35- ..and lives like a king in his new - home and has a sofa all to himself.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40- This gentle giant has discovered - his true personality...

0:05:40 > 0:05:42- ..despite his early experiences.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47- Every pet owner is responsible - for the health of that animal.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51- They should ensure - it's treated for any condition.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55- We never found Zeus' - previous owners.

0:05:58 > 0:06:04- A few weeks ago, we heard about a - special nature project at Llys Nini.

0:06:04 > 0:06:09- The aim was to create ponds to - attract otters and other animals.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13- Recently, a familiar face - of the nature world...

0:06:13 > 0:06:15- ..visited the exciting project.

0:06:16 > 0:06:21- During his visit to the ponds, - Iolo met the volunteer, Rhiannon...

0:06:22 > 0:06:26- ..and the project coordinator, - Elen Richards.

0:06:33 > 0:06:38- We started digging out the ponds - in June and July.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40- That took about two weeks...

0:06:41 > 0:06:45- ..and it has gathered momentum - since that time.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49- This is the heart - of the Lliw Valley...

0:06:49 > 0:06:52- ..which is home to many otters.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56- They move around the rivers - that are in the area...

0:06:56 > 0:07:01- ..so it made sense to build - something that they could use.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12- The idea is that this is a porch - that leads into our two dens.

0:07:12 > 0:07:17- One den is on the surface - and the other is underground.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20- There's a tunnel running - through to the stream.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26- Have you seen - any traces of otters yet?

0:07:26 > 0:07:30- No, but we know they travel - up and down the stream...

0:07:30 > 0:07:35- ..so hope that they come here - once they have discovered it.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42- There's plenty of water - and a lot of growth.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46- I imagine this place - is full of toads and lizards.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48- In the spring, - the water will be clearer.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53- Plants will start growing and - will attract all sorts of things.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00- Llys Nini has a duty - to care for pets...

0:08:00 > 0:08:03- ..such as dogs, cats and rabbits...

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- ..but they make the effort - to look after everything.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13- ..and preserved - the natural hedgerows.

0:08:13 > 0:08:18- They've created new habitats, ponds - and planted new trees.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26- This is so heart-warming when many - habitats in Wales are destroyed.

0:08:31 > 0:08:36- People are rushing around in - their cars and getting stressed...

0:09:05 > 0:09:10- Doli the cat and the Davies family - live on the outskirts of Neath.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20- The cat was left - by the former owners of the house...

0:09:21 > 0:09:23- ..and we started feeding her.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27- She came into the kitchen - and has been here ever since.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31- On this particular evening, - she went out as usual...

0:09:31 > 0:09:34- ..but there was no sign of her - the next day.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36- We didn't know what had happened.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40- I thought she'd gone - to another house to be fed.

0:09:41 > 0:09:46- Unfortunately, we discovered that - she was knocked down by a car...

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- ..in a street near our home.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- Luckily, a neighbour found her - and called the RSPCA.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58- They took her in and started - the treatment that she needed.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01- Richard and his parents, - Sharon and Howard...

0:10:02 > 0:10:04- ..were worried about Doli for days.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06- If she was microchipped...

0:10:06 > 0:10:11- ..the family would have heard about - her situation in next to no time.

0:10:15 > 0:10:20- Our neighbour called the RSPCA - and Llys Nini took her in...

0:10:27 > 0:10:31- She's only met her twice - but recognized her straight away.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39- Unfortunately, - Doli lost her leg in the accident...

0:10:39 > 0:10:44- ..but she's coping well and - everyone is happy to see her home.

0:12:00 > 0:12:06- ..flock to Baglan parish church for - a special service of thanksgiving.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11- We've held services like this - for many years.

0:12:11 > 0:12:16- It's an opportunity for us to thank - the animals who keep us company.

0:12:17 > 0:12:23- The whole community should come out - once a year with their pets...

0:20:20 > 0:20:25- ..she was in such a sorry state - that we had to give her a chance.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37- ..we think that she was locked - in a bathroom for six months.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42- There were other dogs in the house - but they didn't get along.

0:20:42 > 0:20:47- The RSPCA inspectors - had spotted her through a window.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51- They saw her condition - and insisted on taking her.

0:20:51 > 0:20:52- It was a lot of work.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57- We had to apply her ointment - every few hours...

0:20:57 > 0:20:59- ..and feed her six times a day.

0:21:00 > 0:21:05- She hadn't been trained and we had - to teach her how to go outside.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10- It was a lot of work - but she's fantastic.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13- We took her to classes.

0:21:13 > 0:21:18- Yes, we took her to training classes - and she was fantastic.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21- She's settled in - and is part of the family.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23- Wherever we go, she comes too.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28- I would never buy a puppy - from a breeder.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32- People should look into - rehoming a dog.

0:21:32 > 0:21:37- They appreciate being given - a second chance in life.
