0:07:04 > 0:07:08- Anyone who has had the training - or any member of staff...

0:07:08 > 0:07:10- ..can walk a dog with a green sign.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26- There's also dogs who have - a black sign on their cage.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29- They should only be walked by staff.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32- This could be due to - behavioural issues...

0:07:33 > 0:07:36- ..or they have an illness - of some kind.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39- You should use common sense too.

0:07:39 > 0:07:45- Can you recognize a - dog's temperament by looking at it?

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- Yes, let me show you.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51- You can analyze - a dog's temperament...

0:07:52 > 0:07:54- ..from its physical behaviour.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21- The owners hadn't taken the Terrier - to the vet.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25- His nose and face were badly torn...

0:09:29 > 0:09:32- The owner had photographs - on his mobile phone...

0:09:32 > 0:09:36- ..showing the dog - at the opening of a badger sett...

0:09:36 > 0:09:39- ..with the badger in the background.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17- ..and come to the land - around Llys Nini.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19- The site was originally a farm...

0:11:44 > 0:11:48- I'm the conservation manager - at the site...

0:12:04 > 0:12:06- The site covers 78 acres in total...

0:12:06 > 0:12:10- ..that includes a forest - with an ancient tree...

0:12:10 > 0:12:14- ..pastures, wetlands, - pools and streams.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- There's a lot of water - so we're almost swimming!

0:12:18 > 0:12:21- The site was a working farm - for many centuries...

0:12:21 > 0:12:23- ..until the early 1990s.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28- They also mined for coal - in some of the fields.

0:12:28 > 0:12:33- When the animal centre - was opened here in 1997...

0:12:34 > 0:12:36- ..the site was in - a poor condition...

0:12:36 > 0:12:42- ..apart from a few fields that were - rented by a farmer to keep cattle.

0:12:42 > 0:12:46- But this site was awash - with various habitats.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50- It attracted a lot of birds - and other wildlife.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01- The site was originally - part of the Land in Care Scheme...

0:13:01 > 0:13:03- ..but it has just finished.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31- The trails are open to the public...

0:13:32 > 0:13:37- ..and the centre uses them to walk - the dogs that are in their care.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47- This is Tiger - and we think that he's an Akita.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51- Tiger came from a home - where the owner had too many dogs.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55- There's nothing wrong with him - and he's so gentle.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59- But the Akita is such an usual - and specific breed...

0:13:59 > 0:14:04- ..that his new owner needs to be - someone who knows this breed.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08- He's a strong dog - who needs a lot of exercise.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12- We need someone - who has experience of this breed.

0:14:13 > 0:14:14- When adopting a dog...

0:14:15 > 0:14:19- ..think about whether the breed - suits your home and way of life.

0:14:19 > 0:14:23- The Akita is originally - a Japanese hunting dog.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26- There's also an American version.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29- They are faithful dogs - who need a lot of exercise.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34- You'd be expected to walk them - for at least two hours a day.

0:14:35 > 0:14:40- We can put our feet up after - walking along the glorious trails.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43- The dogs can also - take the opportunity to relax.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46- Tell us about your experience.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48- You adopted these two - from Llys Nini.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52- People say it's beneficial - but what was it like?

0:14:52 > 0:14:55- It's been - a very positive experience.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59- Giving two dogs a second chance - at life has been great.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01- I've loved every second.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04- Tell us Flossy and Myfanwy's story.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07- An inspector brought Flossy to us.

0:15:07 > 0:15:13- She had been abused and was here - as a case dog for a long time.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16- This is Myfanwy.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19- She came from a house - that had too many animals.

0:15:20 > 0:15:24- There were too many dogs and cats - so she was in a sorry state.

0:15:24 > 0:15:29- She had never had her fur trimmed - and so on but she's great!

0:15:30 > 0:15:33- You've worked wonders with them, - Rhiannon.

0:15:33 > 0:15:38- What's your advice for someone who - is thinking of adopting an animal?

0:15:38 > 0:15:44- Think of it as giving an animal - a second chance at life.

0:15:44 > 0:15:48- You might need to do some training - but you'll reap the rewards.

0:15:48 > 0:15:53- It can be easier to take - an older dog rather than a puppy.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55- Is it the best thing you've done?

0:15:55 > 0:15:56- Is it the best thing you've done?- - Yes, definitely.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00- We have to draw attention - to Myfanwy's collar.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02- It's lovely.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04- A touch of bling for the dog!

0:16:04 > 0:16:06- Thank you, Rhiannon.

0:16:06 > 0:16:11- If you're thinking about - adopting an animal...

0:16:11 > 0:16:13- ..Rhiannon has given her advice...

0:16:13 > 0:16:15- ..but do your research...

0:16:15 > 0:16:19- ..and contact your local - animal centre for more information.

0:16:21 > 0:16:26- The owner of this animal - didn't do enough research.

0:16:26 > 0:16:31- In his youth, Winston, the micro pig - was a small and cute creature...

0:16:31 > 0:16:34- ..but his owner's life - was turned upside down...

0:16:34 > 0:16:38- ..when Winston changed - from being micro to macro!

0:16:38 > 0:16:41- I was contacted by a worker - from the RSPCA...

0:16:41 > 0:16:45- ..who had received a call - from a member of the public.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47- I helped them to collect the pig.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51- When I arrived, - he was being kept in the kitchen.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54- After two days, - he had caused extensive damage.

0:16:54 > 0:16:59- There were holes in the cupboards - and he had damaged the doors.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03- He was frightened - which made him difficult to catch.

0:17:03 > 0:17:08- At the time, he was small enough to - go into a cat carrier to bring home.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12- He was small but caused - a lot of damage in two days!

0:17:12 > 0:17:16- He's much bigger now - so could cause much more damage.

0:17:16 > 0:17:21- Unfortunately, a lot of people - think it's a good idea to keep pigs.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26- They are interesting and a lot - of fun so I can see the appeal...

0:17:26 > 0:17:31- ..but they have very different needs - to other animals.

0:17:31 > 0:17:36- They are not the sort of pets that - can be kept in the house or garden.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40- You need to prepare and - know exactly what you're taking on.

0:17:40 > 0:17:45- It's irresponsible to have one - because it's fashionable.
