0:00:02 > 0:00:05We Brits are brilliant at volunteering.

0:00:05 > 0:00:08One in four of us regularly give up our time to help others,

0:00:08 > 0:00:11putting something back into the community.

0:00:14 > 0:00:18I want to tap into that spirit to make good things happen.

0:00:20 > 0:00:24I'm on a mission to discover the positive effects of volunteering,

0:00:24 > 0:00:26from the volunteers themselves

0:00:26 > 0:00:29to the individuals and the communities that they help.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35Every day people donate their time, expertise,

0:00:35 > 0:00:38imagination and elbow grease for others.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41They are in need of carpenters and volunteers,

0:00:41 > 0:00:44so I just grabbed my tools and came down for the afternoon.

0:00:44 > 0:00:49I never thought, at the end of my life, I'd be helping others.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53I think volunteering is the lifeblood of what it is to be human.

0:00:53 > 0:01:00- Yes!- It's modest, ordinary people who are making such an amazing difference to peoples' lives.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03The world to me is a beautiful place now.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06It's 360 degrees from where I've come from.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11I'm better than what I was. I couldn't do this a year ago.

0:01:11 > 0:01:17My team is exploring inspiring schemes throughout the UK...

0:01:17 > 0:01:19and tackling projects of our own.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24This is about communities at their best.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27People giving to help others.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31This is about the incredible things we can achieve together.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33This is Operation People Power.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43I'm in Easton, an area of inner-city Bristol.

0:01:44 > 0:01:49Like many places in the UK, it has mixed fortunes.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53It also has a loud heartbeat from locals just like you,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56with a wealth of skills and generosity of spirit,

0:01:56 > 0:02:00willing to go the extra mile to make their community a better place

0:02:00 > 0:02:02for all who live there.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06no-one exemplifies this more than Bruce,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09who runs a community centre called Baggator.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12- Hello, there.- Hello, Dave, nice to meet you.- Nice to meet you.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15This is some place you've got here.

0:02:15 > 0:02:20Baggator is a successful youth club and local meeting place for all.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25With other community spaces under threat due to the need for offices

0:02:25 > 0:02:29and housing, Bruce wants Baggator to grow

0:02:29 > 0:02:32and provide vital resources in the neighbourhood.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Basically, anything the community needs, we will get involved.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39All communities need a centre and when you are in a poor area,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43as we are here, that centre becomes more valuable and more needed.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46People rely on this to get outside the house

0:02:46 > 0:02:51and create the community and be part of the community they live in.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53It's taken the weight of everyday life

0:02:53 > 0:02:57and giving them somewhere where they can be friends with each other.

0:02:58 > 0:03:03'My mission, to help Bruce achieve his goal, has really inspired me.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07'You know, I'm taking away so much from this project.'

0:03:07 > 0:03:10It's reinforced my faith in human nature.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12The thing is, without volunteers,

0:03:12 > 0:03:14so much of our society these days would crumble.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19There are so many amazing projects throughout Britain that need help,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22they need volunteers.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Gosh, you can make a difference.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28The other projects we have completed in Easton proved just that.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32All made possible by my brilliant team.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Nicki Chapman, who's been using her motivational skills

0:03:36 > 0:03:38and charm to great effect.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46Martyn Ashton, seeking inspiration from the brilliant things people

0:03:46 > 0:03:49like you do across the country to enhance the lives of others.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Juliet Sargeant not only provides artistic flair

0:03:54 > 0:03:56as an award-winning garden designer,

0:03:56 > 0:04:00but she's also a psychologist who understands why these

0:04:00 > 0:04:02projects are so important.

0:04:02 > 0:04:07And Mark Millar, a genius builder who always asks the right questions.

0:04:07 > 0:04:12- How long have we got? - A few days.- And we've got no money?

0:04:13 > 0:04:15No, but that's the purpose. It's community.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17It's all for one, one for all.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22And an army of locals willing to give for others.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25This has all been created through volunteers.

0:04:25 > 0:04:26- Yes.- Through the love of the community.

0:04:26 > 0:04:31- Yeah.- Creating this for the community. I think that's magic.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34So far, we have already surprised

0:04:34 > 0:04:37Bruce by transforming the garden at Baggator...

0:04:37 > 0:04:40- How do you do it so quickly? - Volunteers, mate!

0:04:41 > 0:04:43..but we haven't stopped there.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48What Bruce doesn't know is that the local army has kept going.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51People will just help. When you need it, they are there.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54That's people power.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58We're nearing the end of our project here at Baggator in Easton.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01It might still look like a building site,

0:05:01 > 0:05:04but thanks to the time and effort that our helpful heroes

0:05:04 > 0:05:08are putting in, it's well on the way to becoming that inviting community

0:05:08 > 0:05:11hub that Bruce has been working towards.

0:05:13 > 0:05:14There's still a lot to do.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19There's work to start on the inside of Baggator.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22We've got to start getting walls put up there, door frames in,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25some of the plastering sorted out.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29It's about local volunteers, getting in here and sorting these projects out.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Nobody said it was going to be easy...

0:05:32 > 0:05:33..did they, Dave?

0:05:35 > 0:05:38He's right there. I never said it would be easy.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43But it's going to be a lot easier with these cheerful helpers.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47- So where are youse lot from? - ALL: The University of Bristol!

0:05:47 > 0:05:49THEY CHEER

0:05:49 > 0:05:51I'm going to hand youse all over to Simon in a minute.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55- We'll go and find some tools. - Let me check those hands out.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58See how clean they are now? I want to check them all at the end of the day.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Get in there and on with some work. You've got to get this finished by tonight.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06- Yeah. Excellent.- Things look like they're going well at Baggator.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08And now Mark has his army of helpers,

0:06:08 > 0:06:11he can turn his attention to the inside.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Everyone has given it their all.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19And, as ever, Rob, who's been volunteering with us from the start

0:06:19 > 0:06:22is playing a key role in the build.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25He's given this so much energy and commitment.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29It typifies the spirit of volunteering in Britain.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33But I've been told he's burning the midnight oil.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37So, I left one job last night and I drove past here and I noticed the lights were on.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39- Yeah, we got out of here at nine. - Flipping heck.- Yeah.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Straight home to bed, straight back in this morning.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45- We're definitely mob handed today. - Yeah. There's about 40 people here.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48What I love about it is, everyone's coming from different walks of life

0:06:48 > 0:06:50as well, you know? You've got the college guys out there,

0:06:50 > 0:06:54we've just got some people down there, a law student that's come in.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57We talk about Bruce who is running it and stuff, but really...

0:06:58 > 0:07:00..we're giving this back to the community.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Yeah. Absolutely. And I mean, that is Bruce. Bruce is the community.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05I mean, he gives it his all.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Rob, like everyone here,

0:07:08 > 0:07:11has bought into the vision that Bruce has for the project.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17When I first came down and met Bruce,

0:07:17 > 0:07:19I was going to be able to give a day or two.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22But after meeting the guy and seeing how community spirited he was and

0:07:22 > 0:07:26what he does, I thought, "Take the week off work, you know?"

0:07:26 > 0:07:29- So, all good.- AS CILLA: - Surprise, surprise, Brucey Boy!

0:07:32 > 0:07:35Rob has gone above and beyond,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38but none of this would have been possible without lots of people

0:07:38 > 0:07:41giving a bit of time to achieve things in a few days

0:07:41 > 0:07:44that would have taken Bruce years.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Why would you want to give your weekend up to do something like this?

0:07:47 > 0:07:50I just think that community projects like this are brilliant

0:07:50 > 0:07:53and they're really worthwhile and they benefit a lot of people.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55They're fun to be involved in.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00And, you know, if people like us don't do it,

0:08:00 > 0:08:02then is it going to happen?

0:08:02 > 0:08:06- Staying till the finish?- Yeah, definitely.- Yeah?- Yeah, of course.

0:08:06 > 0:08:11Decorators, architects, students, postmen and plumbers.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14They're all here, doing their bit.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- You're a local man, aren't you? - I am, yeah.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19- So you wanted to put something back into your community? - Yeah, yeah, definitely.

0:08:19 > 0:08:25- Important to have places like this for local people to come and enjoy themselves, so...- Yeah.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27It feels good to be helping improve it.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35We've not long until we need to hand this place back to Bruce and the community.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38And there's still loads to do.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42What we need, at this stage of the job,

0:08:42 > 0:08:44is a bit of a Superman on board.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46- Wey!- Hey! Hey!

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Our volunteers are from completely different backgrounds,

0:08:53 > 0:08:56but they all share one thing - generosity.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00What I'm realising is it's just the tip of the iceberg.

0:09:03 > 0:09:08All across the UK, people do incredible and inspirational things

0:09:08 > 0:09:11to enhance our communities and the lives of others.

0:09:14 > 0:09:20Martyn Ashton has been visiting some of them to bring that inspiration back here to Bristol.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25He's seen the pleasure that animals can bring

0:09:25 > 0:09:28to both the older and younger generations...

0:09:28 > 0:09:31It seems to me that if you can encourage or invite

0:09:31 > 0:09:34and allow people to connect with nature, you know,

0:09:34 > 0:09:39it can open doors and it can be very therapeutic, really.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Yeah, absolutely.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43..experienced the life enhancing joy

0:09:43 > 0:09:46that a feeling of freedom can give you.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48Bryn, walk on.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50So you've got a bit of personal freedom?

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Yeah, it does make you think, doesn't it?

0:09:52 > 0:09:56You know, I just did something I've never done in my life before,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59because someone volunteered to help.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03I'd found out about the great work being done by volunteers

0:10:03 > 0:10:07who are giving their time to help ex-offenders back into employment.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12- Do they have a lot of faith in people?- Definitely, definitely.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15And I think they've really found something that they had to do,

0:10:15 > 0:10:18and they devote all this time to making it happen.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Now, Martyn's heading to Cornwall,

0:10:27 > 0:10:31visiting a music-based youth project called Livewire.

0:10:32 > 0:10:36It's a place where kids and teenagers can learn an instrument

0:10:36 > 0:10:39and practice or play live to an audience.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42But the volunteers here provide so much more.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47Livewire is run by Andy.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50The simple truth is, without the volunteers,

0:10:50 > 0:10:53this place wouldn't be open.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57Andy coordinates a team of volunteer youth workers who help the dozens

0:10:57 > 0:11:00of young people coming through the door every night.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05There's more and more young people who are vulnerable,

0:11:05 > 0:11:08that have got mental health issues, who self harm,

0:11:08 > 0:11:10who have eating disorders,

0:11:10 > 0:11:13but there's less people or organisations

0:11:13 > 0:11:14offering support to them.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16Over to the left, yeah?

0:11:16 > 0:11:20So, the youth work team here work with, you know,

0:11:20 > 0:11:22what comes through the door.

0:11:25 > 0:11:26This is Nicole.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29She was introduced to Livewire when she was 16.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35She was suffering from severe depression and anxiety,

0:11:35 > 0:11:37affecting every aspect of her life.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41So, when did you start coming here?

0:11:41 > 0:11:44I started coming here just under three years ago.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47My youth worker who I had at the time just kind of brought me down

0:11:47 > 0:11:51and she wanted me to try and get some social interaction with people my own age,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54because that was something I really struggled with.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57And so I came down for about half an hour on the first night

0:11:57 > 0:11:58and was like,

0:11:58 > 0:12:01"Oh, I've had enough now, this is scary, I want to go."

0:12:01 > 0:12:04But, no, I actually...

0:12:04 > 0:12:08Although I was terrified of the fact I was surrounded by people...

0:12:08 > 0:12:11I actually did enjoy the little guitar lesson that I had,

0:12:11 > 0:12:14that they put me in, so I ended up coming down the next week with her

0:12:14 > 0:12:17and so the youth workers here basically helped me.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20So instead of going, "Oh, you've got this wrong with you

0:12:20 > 0:12:22"and you need to deal with it in this way

0:12:22 > 0:12:24"and you have to have this many therapy sessions," and stuff which,

0:12:24 > 0:12:27obviously, you hate when you're in that position,

0:12:27 > 0:12:30they go, "Oh, so, OK, what's wrong? It's fine, you can cry,

0:12:30 > 0:12:32"it doesn't matter, we're not going to judge you.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35"And here, you can play a guitar and cheer yourself up afterwards and you

0:12:35 > 0:12:40"can have fun with your friends and not have to worry about stuff whilst you're here."

0:12:41 > 0:12:46For Nicole, Livewire gave her a new sense of direction in her life

0:12:46 > 0:12:49and the confidence and skills to back it up.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52I started playing regularly,

0:12:52 > 0:12:55getting involved with the general activities that went on,

0:12:55 > 0:12:58I started making new friends,

0:12:58 > 0:13:01which was a really big thing for me at the time.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04My mental health improved, like, dramatically, quite quickly.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07Sounds like quite a transformation.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09I was taken... Well, gradually,

0:13:09 > 0:13:13I was taken off medication and therapy and things like that,

0:13:13 > 0:13:17and I really started to see an improvement just in my general life

0:13:17 > 0:13:19and was just happier and really enjoying things

0:13:19 > 0:13:23like a normal teenager, which was just amazing.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25So, I know you're actually performing tonight.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27- Yes.- So we'd better get in there.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31- Yes, we'd better head in and set the guitar up.- Yeah, let's go.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33APPLAUSE

0:13:45 > 0:13:51# You kept all the things I threw away

0:13:53 > 0:13:56# A leaf I picked... #

0:13:56 > 0:14:01This place really goes to show that organisations like this that rely on

0:14:01 > 0:14:06volunteers really do make a huge difference to people's lives.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12For me, it's life-changing,

0:14:12 > 0:14:15to see a young person on the stage for the first time,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18performing in front of an audience, you know,

0:14:18 > 0:14:21that blows me away every time.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25But it's those things that make you passionate about what you do.

0:14:25 > 0:14:30# Maybe I wanted you to change

0:14:30 > 0:14:33# Maybe I'm the one to blame... #

0:14:33 > 0:14:36If I think that Nicole two and a half years ago

0:14:36 > 0:14:39and I think of her now, they are a million miles apart.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41They are not the same person.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46# I was full of doubt and you believed... #

0:14:46 > 0:14:49I know for myself, obviously, with problems,

0:14:49 > 0:14:52and with a lot of the friends I have and people that I know

0:14:52 > 0:14:56that come here, Livewire really does genuinely save lives.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59We are not just a general youth project.

0:14:59 > 0:15:04We are using music as a really good healing tool and a way to make friends.

0:15:06 > 0:15:11I don't know what I would have done without this place, to be honest.

0:15:11 > 0:15:16# Maybe I'm the one to blame. #

0:15:16 > 0:15:18CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:15:23 > 0:15:24This place is amazing.

0:15:24 > 0:15:28On the surface, it's all about music, listening, playing, enjoying.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31But underneath, it's about creating a safe,

0:15:31 > 0:15:35interesting and an exciting space to engage with young people.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38And that is making a big difference to these guys' lives.

0:15:42 > 0:15:47'Giving direction and hope to our young people is vital to all our futures.

0:15:47 > 0:15:52'Projects like Livewire and Baggator show just how crucial that work is.'

0:15:53 > 0:15:56Juliet has been helping me to get an insight into why.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58It's such a pivotal time.

0:15:58 > 0:16:03But what is it that helps a young person gain direction?

0:16:03 > 0:16:08Well, none of us likes to be told what to do with a wagging finger

0:16:08 > 0:16:13and I think young people, just like any of us, really,

0:16:13 > 0:16:17are best guided within a positive relationship,

0:16:17 > 0:16:22so to be able to come alongside young people and develop positive

0:16:22 > 0:16:25relationships and just gently guide them...

0:16:26 > 0:16:28..is a great thing to be able to do.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30And then of course, role models.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32The thing about role models is,

0:16:32 > 0:16:35it could be somebody that you know personally,

0:16:35 > 0:16:39but also could be somebody that you see on the television or in the newspaper.

0:16:39 > 0:16:46And what a role model does is gives you a vision of the person you might want to be.

0:16:46 > 0:16:53- So you're able to imagine the person that you want to become and step towards that future.- Yes, yeah.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04Role models don't set out to be mentors for others,

0:17:04 > 0:17:06they earn that right.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10Less than a mile and-a-half across town from Baggator is Saint Pauls,

0:17:10 > 0:17:13an area with its fair share of inner-city problems.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Thankfully, there's another great project there, providing a safe,

0:17:20 > 0:17:23supportive, fun place for young people,

0:17:23 > 0:17:26with inspiring volunteers at its core.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30Welcome to the most notorious area in Bristol,

0:17:30 > 0:17:32supposedly, Saint Pauls.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35This is where I grew up. This is where I called home.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37And I still call it home.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39Bulldog!

0:17:39 > 0:17:43Chris is a volunteer youth worker at Full Circle,

0:17:43 > 0:17:46a community centre that sees hundreds of local kids

0:17:46 > 0:17:49and their families come through their doors every week.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53OK, you lot are too fast for me. You lot are too fast for me.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57Afternoon, evening and holiday clubs here are run by specialist

0:17:57 > 0:18:00play workers, all giving their time for free.

0:18:00 > 0:18:05Draw a picture of something that reminds you of Full Circle

0:18:05 > 0:18:07or Saint Pauls.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11For Chris, as with many of those who get involved and help here,

0:18:11 > 0:18:15Full Circle has been part of their lives for many years.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17I think, as a child growing up,

0:18:17 > 0:18:19- it was a place of safety for many of us.- Yes.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23We had a chance to socialise in a safe environment

0:18:23 > 0:18:26and also learn and thrive in that environment as well.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29- Full Circle became an alternative, family of many of us.- Yeah.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32You know, where we had issues at home, or maybe in school,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35or even in the wider community, as children,

0:18:35 > 0:18:37we knew that when we were in Full Circle, we were safe.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41- Yes.- And we knew that everyone there was there to help us, as children.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43Yeah.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46These days, the level of support Chris and his fellow volunteers

0:18:46 > 0:18:50can give to the kids of Saint Pauls makes a real difference

0:18:50 > 0:18:52at a critical time of their lives.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56What sort of risks are there for the kids on the street,

0:18:56 > 0:18:58if you miss out on something like Full Circle?

0:18:58 > 0:19:01The risk's so high. There's a lot of gang activity.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05There is a lot of violent crime within these areas.

0:19:05 > 0:19:10Without having Full Circle there to kind of...as a safety net, they'd be lost.

0:19:10 > 0:19:12There's nothing else.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15It's part of their everyday life, it's a part of their weekly routine.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18- Yeah.- They see us on the street, they see us as workers on the street

0:19:18 > 0:19:22and they know they can approach us if they've got a problem or an issue.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24Teenage years can be very stressful and what we're trying to do

0:19:24 > 0:19:26at Full Circle right now is help young men,

0:19:26 > 0:19:28help young women keep on the straight and narrow,

0:19:28 > 0:19:31understand clearly what their options and choices are

0:19:31 > 0:19:33- and then make the right ones. - You know, Chris,

0:19:33 > 0:19:36you must be a role model now to some of these youngsters.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39How does that make you feel?

0:19:39 > 0:19:41It gives me a sense of pride, definitely.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43It gives me a sense of pride.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46For example, I had a 17-year-old come up to me the other day

0:19:46 > 0:19:51and thanked me because he said without me he wouldn't have decided to go into college after school.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54Now, that sort of thing, when you hear that, that really warms the heart.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56It makes you want to, you know...

0:19:56 > 0:19:58It makes me want to do what I do some more, you know.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01It's priceless. There's nothing... You can't put a price on that.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06You can come and do whatever you like.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09- A lot of people come here.- It's fun.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14It's a nice, fun, safe place.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22There are many, many places in Britain, not just St Pauls,

0:20:22 > 0:20:27where there are problems, you know, either with violence or poverty.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31And it's hard for youngsters to get direction.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35And the great thing about Chris is because he's grown up in this area,

0:20:35 > 0:20:38he's grown up working through the project,

0:20:38 > 0:20:43he's the most perfect role model for some of these youngsters round here.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46He's been there, he's seen it, he's done it, he's got the T-shirt.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50His core values were set here within Full Circle.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55The guys at Full Circle are doing an incredible job.

0:20:55 > 0:21:01They've created a beacon for the local kids and they do wonders with very little funding.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04And it's popular, they are running at full capacity...

0:21:05 > 0:21:09..but as Chris tells me, there's always room for improvement.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11It's a cracking building.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14In a practical way, what do you think we could do?

0:21:14 > 0:21:16I think that the kids could benefit from a room

0:21:16 > 0:21:19where they could chill out and watch movies or do something

0:21:19 > 0:21:21along those lines because we don't have that

0:21:21 > 0:21:23- and that's something that we did have back in the day.- Right.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26Back in the '80s we would have a movie night where all the kids

0:21:26 > 0:21:29would come together and we'd watch movies together and that.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32That essence of the club has actually gone,

0:21:32 > 0:21:34so I would like to see that be returned, definitely.

0:21:36 > 0:21:41I've spotted one dark and dingy room that isn't being used at all

0:21:41 > 0:21:45and could be just perfect as a chill out space for the youngsters.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49I know we're really busy at Baggator,

0:21:49 > 0:21:53but small changes can make a big difference.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55Thankfully, I have a secret weapon.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02Nicki has worked tirelessly recruiting volunteers

0:22:02 > 0:22:04for all our projects.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07- Have you ever volunteered for anything?- She's taken to the airwaves...

0:22:07 > 0:22:10We're looking for volunteers over the next few days,

0:22:10 > 0:22:13the next few weeks and hopefully we're going to make a huge,

0:22:13 > 0:22:16huge difference.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18..talked to companies who encouraged

0:22:18 > 0:22:20staff to give back to the community...

0:22:20 > 0:22:23- We are desperate for volunteers. - I'll get on the phone now.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25That would be amazing.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27Doesn't matter what they do, where they come from,

0:22:27 > 0:22:29all skills are accepted.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31..met people who already volunteer...

0:22:31 > 0:22:36You sound like the perfect team to recruit, if I can, on a volunteer basis.

0:22:36 > 0:22:41..and frankly stopped everyone she's met to see if they can spare a few hours to help.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43Hello, can I stop you for a couple of minutes?

0:22:43 > 0:22:46- Yeah, no worries. - She's not failed us yet...

0:22:46 > 0:22:48Here we go, where it's all going to happen.

0:22:48 > 0:22:52..and like the Pied Piper of St Pauls, here she comes!

0:22:59 > 0:23:02In a small room like this a handful

0:23:02 > 0:23:05of willing painters can work wonders in no time.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08I can't believe how quickly this room is being transformed.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11It's amazing. The amount of work that's happened

0:23:11 > 0:23:14and the amount that's, you know, been done in the past hour,

0:23:14 > 0:23:16just itself has been amazing.

0:23:16 > 0:23:17What do you think of the colours?

0:23:17 > 0:23:21I like it. I'm a big fan of grey, and the yellow, a big fan of yellow.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25So I think it'll look really, really good when it's all done.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28It's already getting there, isn't it? This is just the first stage.

0:23:29 > 0:23:35Giving this room a simple makeover might be a small job in the grand scheme of things...

0:23:37 > 0:23:40..but for Judith, who is a director at the project,

0:23:40 > 0:23:45any improvements help to create a legacy for the people of St Pauls,

0:23:45 > 0:23:49providing the support a healthy community needs.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52So, Judith, how long have you been involved in the project?

0:23:52 > 0:23:55I've been involved with Full Circle for on and off 20 years.

0:23:55 > 0:23:59I've stopped counting because I just know I'm going to be here forever.

0:23:59 > 0:24:03- It's that sort of place? - For me it is.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05It's helped nourish me and grow me as a person

0:24:05 > 0:24:09as well as what I've been able to give back to the community

0:24:09 > 0:24:12- and especially to the young people. - Yeah.- I'm very lucky.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15So how important, within the community, is the project?

0:24:15 > 0:24:20I think we're the lifeblood and in some ways that's really nice,

0:24:20 > 0:24:22but in some ways that's kind of unacceptable

0:24:22 > 0:24:24in the world we're living in at the moment.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26To think...

0:24:28 > 0:24:31..what would happen without us a little bit, it's not bearable.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34So how big a part in this do volunteers play?

0:24:34 > 0:24:37At one time Full Circle was a charity that had, well,

0:24:37 > 0:24:41one member of staff, then it went to 17, then it went back to one.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46Without the volunteers we wouldn't even be here.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Judith knows that volunteers like

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Chris are vital to the project's future.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57It's because of Chris's first-hand experience of growing up around here

0:24:57 > 0:25:02that makes him the perfect person to go out there and convince young,

0:25:02 > 0:25:07vulnerable people to abandon the streets and come to the project.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09We go out there and we try to find children that look like

0:25:09 > 0:25:14they're a bit displaced or maybe even entering gang life.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17We try to steer them into coming into the club,

0:25:17 > 0:25:19so we tell them about the all the activities.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22We come alongside them, introduce ourselves to their family...

0:25:23 > 0:25:26..to try our best at giving them a better opportunity

0:25:26 > 0:25:29of becoming a part of our Full Circle family.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35We've given them that structure of where they can have fun.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39We found out that they were less interested in being on the streets

0:25:39 > 0:25:42and less interested in getting themselves in trouble.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46And by being part of the family,

0:25:46 > 0:25:49they get an opportunity to learn new skills,

0:25:49 > 0:25:53make friends and interact with role models like Chris,

0:25:53 > 0:25:57who show how they can be a positive member of the community.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59And without these facilities,

0:25:59 > 0:26:04some of the young people could end up hanging around the streets.

0:26:04 > 0:26:08It's simply not having anywhere to go and that can lead

0:26:08 > 0:26:11to all type of dangers and risks to young people.

0:26:13 > 0:26:18Today, Full Circle works with young people from the age of five to 25

0:26:18 > 0:26:22and it's because of the generosity of volunteers like Chris

0:26:22 > 0:26:25that so many vulnerable young people have turned their lives around.

0:26:27 > 0:26:32We like to usher them in out of the cold into the warmth of Full Circle.

0:26:40 > 0:26:45We've got two projects on the go in two separate parts of the city.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49One big, one small,

0:26:49 > 0:26:53but both harnessing that amazing resource that is people power.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00At Baggator Community Centre our volunteering heroes and heroines

0:27:00 > 0:27:03are working all hours to get this place ready to hand back

0:27:03 > 0:27:06to Bruce and the people of Easton,

0:27:06 > 0:27:09and this is our very last day to get it done.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17Mark has been a powerhouse on this mission.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23No job has been too big or too small for him to rise to the challenge.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28He has put his heart and soul and muscle power

0:27:28 > 0:27:31into every task and led by example from the front...

0:27:31 > 0:27:33Thank you very much. Youse look amazing.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36..making sure every volunteer had an impact.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38We need to get loads of coverage.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41But now with the hours counting down,

0:27:41 > 0:27:44it seems the pressure of the two remaining tasks

0:27:44 > 0:27:47have given way to some retail therapy.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49Oh, I just hope he gets a move on!

0:27:49 > 0:27:53We need to get quite a lot of paint on board.

0:27:53 > 0:27:57The ones that we suggested were these ones up here.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59- Right, OK.- The latest LED.- OK.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02Mark, don't forget we're up against it!

0:28:04 > 0:28:06Something like that would be perfect.

0:28:06 > 0:28:08Is it comfortable?

0:28:09 > 0:28:13Mark, you got the memo, right? What did it say?

0:28:14 > 0:28:17Stop messing around, we've got to paint Baggator.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19I tell you what, Mark, we need the paint,

0:28:19 > 0:28:22but we'll leave the painting to the experts.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26Our incredible local artists don't need any help

0:28:26 > 0:28:29with their creation on the outside of Baggator.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32But they could do with a brew.

0:28:32 > 0:28:36Ollie and Andy, you are two thirds of this magnificent trio.

0:28:36 > 0:28:39Why did the three of you decide to get involved with this project?

0:28:39 > 0:28:44Because you're giving up your time, you know. This is your art.

0:28:44 > 0:28:46I think it's great to be part of a positive thing.

0:28:46 > 0:28:48Everyone's working hard in there.

0:28:48 > 0:28:52To transform this building into a big difference, that's what I enjoy.

0:28:52 > 0:28:55Yeah, lovely. Guys, thank you. I'll leave you to it.

0:28:55 > 0:28:58- Thanks very much.- Shout if you want more tea.- OK.

0:28:59 > 0:29:03It's not just the outside that's getting an artistic makeover.

0:29:03 > 0:29:09Inside local artist DK is also creating a brilliant new mural and,

0:29:09 > 0:29:12like everybody else, giving his time for free.

0:29:16 > 0:29:20It's been incredible. Inside Baggator we've decorated the whole place out...

0:29:21 > 0:29:24..put a bit of life back into the stage area,

0:29:24 > 0:29:25we've got a storage unit here.

0:29:25 > 0:29:29It's all been done with blackboard paint so they can put notes up there,

0:29:29 > 0:29:32messages to people, tell people what's in the different cupboards.

0:29:32 > 0:29:34We've redone all the toilets.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37We've put in disability access into the toilets over here,

0:29:37 > 0:29:41where Rob is now, made all the doors wider so we can get anybody with

0:29:41 > 0:29:45wheelchairs or pushchairs, even, can go through that way,

0:29:45 > 0:29:48and we still leave access to the fire escape out there.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51In the kitchen area, we've put new ceilings in there.

0:29:51 > 0:29:53We've put a new ceiling all the way through.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56And all the furniture's going to be set in properly

0:29:56 > 0:29:59and fixed to the walls so everything's working properly.

0:29:59 > 0:30:01And we're doing a massive clean-up,

0:30:01 > 0:30:04handing this back so that the kitchen and the whole area is working...

0:30:05 > 0:30:07..for ballroom dancing and bingo.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13The inside space really is taking shape,

0:30:13 > 0:30:17and I'm loving the bespoke artwork on the walls.

0:30:17 > 0:30:20It's very fitting for the public art-loving city of Bristol.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26Nicki has been in contact with another local artist, Ollie,

0:30:26 > 0:30:33who uses calligraphy as a form of expression to put across simple messages.

0:30:33 > 0:30:38He has offered to paint some words on the wall of Full Circle in nearby St Pauls.

0:30:38 > 0:30:42But we're running late and, before he can start,

0:30:42 > 0:30:44we have some heavy-duty rewiring to do.

0:30:45 > 0:30:47Thankfully, Paul has volunteered

0:30:47 > 0:30:49with his expertise to fit the new lights.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53So, we've got a little bit of a challenge on our hands here

0:30:53 > 0:30:56cos we've only got eight hours to turn this room round.

0:30:56 > 0:31:00- OK.- The first problem is that light is terrible, OK?

0:31:00 > 0:31:02Because what we want to do with this

0:31:02 > 0:31:05room is we want to try and make it a much softer, gentler space.

0:31:05 > 0:31:09So could you possibly get this lighting changed in here?

0:31:09 > 0:31:11Yeah, no problem.

0:31:15 > 0:31:20The good news is that Paul's wasting no time in getting new lights in.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23But there's a problem.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27Our graffiti artist is nowhere to be found.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31I tell you what, Dave, if he doesn't turn up,

0:31:31 > 0:31:34you'd better get your crayons out.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36No-one wants that, Mark.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39It's time to think on our feet.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43Right, I'm going to have to speak to Nicki.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46Hopefully she's on the phone.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48- MOBILE PHONE - Hello?- Hi, Nicki, it's Mark.

0:31:48 > 0:31:53- Hey. Hi, Mark. How are you?- I was very well, to tell you the truth, Nicki. Things were going well.

0:31:53 > 0:31:56- Go on.- The graffiti artist isn't here.

0:31:56 > 0:31:58- Oh, no!- No, he's not!

0:31:58 > 0:32:00Hold on! He's just walked down the road!

0:32:00 > 0:32:04- Has he literally just turned up? - Oh, my God! Out of nowhere.

0:32:04 > 0:32:08- Look, look! He's here! - How are you doing?- Top man, top man.

0:32:08 > 0:32:10- Right, Nicki, I've got to go, got to go.- Brilliant.- Bye.- OK.

0:32:10 > 0:32:13- I'll see you later. Bye.- Man, I'm so glad to see you.

0:32:13 > 0:32:17Oh, my God. It's brilliant. I was in total meltdown there.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20Now, that is a result.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23A collective sigh of relief all round.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26Ollie, talk me through what you've got here because, in my head,

0:32:26 > 0:32:30graffitiing on a wall is coming in with like cans and brushes

0:32:30 > 0:32:32and just firing the whole thing over there and standing back

0:32:32 > 0:32:36and having loads of fun, but it's obviously a bit more methodical than that, isn't it?

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Yeah, because this is based on calligraphy,

0:32:38 > 0:32:40it's sort of scaling up what I've drawn

0:32:40 > 0:32:43- and then just using a brush instead of a pen.- Right.

0:32:43 > 0:32:45So it's not just chuck it on then.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48No, no, because then it ends up like not in the centre or something.

0:33:02 > 0:33:03(It's great.)

0:33:05 > 0:33:08I think this room is really starting to come together.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12Go on, Charmaine. You break.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14'So, while the experts do what they do best...

0:33:16 > 0:33:19'..volunteer youth worker Charmaine and I have a natter.'

0:33:19 > 0:33:22So, Charmaine, what does Full Circle mean to you?

0:33:22 > 0:33:24To me, it means community, it means family.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26- It's like an extended family. - Yeah.- You know what I mean?

0:33:26 > 0:33:31I've been coming here for as long as I can remember and now I have a child who comes here,

0:33:31 > 0:33:35so it feels very generational. All the families know each other.

0:33:37 > 0:33:41- So what sort of things did you do? - We used to have girls club.

0:33:41 > 0:33:45We had trips to the cinemas. We used to do crafts.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47Anything you could think of that a child likes doing,

0:33:47 > 0:33:50we used to do it with Full Circle, especially the camps.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53I think they were most famous for their camps back in the day,

0:33:53 > 0:33:56when every summer we used to go on two or three trips.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59It allowed me to do things like fundraising - so,

0:33:59 > 0:34:02when we wanted to go on a trip to Alton Towers or something like that,

0:34:02 > 0:34:05they would say, "All right, you lot want to go on a trip,

0:34:05 > 0:34:07"how are you going to raise the money?"

0:34:07 > 0:34:11So we used to have to use our minds and think of ways to raise some funds and, a lot of the times,

0:34:11 > 0:34:15we used to raise enough money to get a coach to take us on a day trip

0:34:15 > 0:34:18somewhere, and that gave me confidence to know that,

0:34:18 > 0:34:21"All right, Char..."

0:34:21 > 0:34:23Like, I was, what? 12, 13 when I was doing stuff like that?

0:34:23 > 0:34:27So today I'm very entrepreneurial, so it's definitely encouraged me.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30Yes.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32If Full Circle wasn't here...

0:34:33 > 0:34:36..what would the teenagers do?

0:34:36 > 0:34:39I can't even imagine the area without Full Circle, to be honest.

0:34:39 > 0:34:42There's not many services for the young people in this area.

0:34:42 > 0:34:46To be honest, Full Circle provides the only service for teenagers in St Pauls.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49If they ain't got productive activities to do,

0:34:49 > 0:34:51there's only one other path that they often take,

0:34:51 > 0:34:54so in order to try and keep our young people

0:34:54 > 0:34:57on the straight and narrow, we need to have places like this

0:34:57 > 0:35:00that provide positive activities for them to take part in.

0:35:02 > 0:35:06And, as Ollie paints his words of wisdom on the wall,

0:35:06 > 0:35:09Mark and John add the finishing touches to the room.

0:35:12 > 0:35:15The young 'uns are keen on seeing the new space.

0:35:20 > 0:35:24I'm guessing that's like... Is that like an Olympic torch almost, do you reckon?

0:35:24 > 0:35:27Well, you see, that's the thing about art. Art's subjective, you know? You can sort of...

0:35:27 > 0:35:30What is it for you?

0:35:30 > 0:35:33I don't know what it is, but it looks like it goes that way.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37Right, what else have we got? We'll put some games out, and beanbags.

0:35:37 > 0:35:38Let's get it hoovered up.

0:35:42 > 0:35:44And it's done.

0:35:47 > 0:35:51From a dark and dingy abandoned space to this -

0:35:51 > 0:35:55a room that will really add something to the Full Circle project,

0:35:55 > 0:35:58somewhere for the youngsters to just chill out.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02Not that I think there will be too much relaxing in there today.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05- Hey, can we go in now? - KIDS: Yeah!

0:36:05 > 0:36:07Right, I'm going in. Hold on.

0:36:08 > 0:36:10THEY SCREAM

0:36:14 > 0:36:16This is what it's about.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19So we get the kids in here, so they can have fun.

0:36:19 > 0:36:20There you go!

0:36:20 > 0:36:23It was all the volunteers as well.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26Hey, that is amazing.

0:36:26 > 0:36:30Hey, I did not expect a reaction like that.

0:36:30 > 0:36:32No. They were really happy for the room.

0:36:32 > 0:36:36It's nice for them to have a little bit of a quiet space where they can just come out.

0:36:36 > 0:36:40They can just, you know, come and chill. That's nice. Thank you.

0:36:40 > 0:36:44You're welcome. I tell you what, it's not me that you should thank. It's all these guys here.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46Yeah, well done to all the volunteers who decorated this

0:36:46 > 0:36:49wonderful room for the young people. It's really appreciated.

0:36:51 > 0:36:55I hope you have lots of fun in here, because it's for you, all right?

0:36:55 > 0:36:57- Thank you.- Thank you.

0:36:59 > 0:37:03So we want to say a huge thank you for...

0:37:03 > 0:37:05MANY: People power!

0:37:06 > 0:37:08THEY CHEER

0:37:18 > 0:37:20Back over in Easton,

0:37:20 > 0:37:23the folk at Baggator have finally finished their painting, too.

0:37:24 > 0:37:27There's less than an hour to go

0:37:27 > 0:37:31before Bruce comes to see the result of everyone's hard work.

0:37:35 > 0:37:39We've also invited back Grenville and some of his singing group,

0:37:39 > 0:37:42including the ladies from the Malcolm X elders group,

0:37:42 > 0:37:44to provide the entertainment.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46I can't wait.

0:37:48 > 0:37:52The whole point of my mission was to show just what you,

0:37:52 > 0:37:54the British public, are capable of,

0:37:54 > 0:37:58and to encourage more people to lend a hand and make a difference

0:37:58 > 0:38:00where you live.

0:38:02 > 0:38:07Nowhere has this been shown more than at Baggator.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11Now it's time to show our work to Bruce and the

0:38:11 > 0:38:13original founder, Pete.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16I think it's about time we had a look at the outside, do you?

0:38:16 > 0:38:18That would be great.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21Oh!

0:38:21 > 0:38:23Wow!

0:38:23 > 0:38:25I would say that's brightened things up a bit.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27You're not going to miss it now.

0:38:27 > 0:38:29Gosh! That's wonderful.

0:38:31 > 0:38:34I believe it gives the place such a great identity now.

0:38:34 > 0:38:37- No more the hidden secret. - No, no.

0:38:37 > 0:38:40- I love it.- Well, that's just the outside.

0:38:40 > 0:38:42- Shall we have a look at the inside? - Yes, please.- Come on.

0:38:42 > 0:38:45I love the cockatoos.

0:38:48 > 0:38:53Local legend Bruce has given years to helping the community,

0:38:53 > 0:38:57but now it's his turn to see what the locals have given back to him.

0:38:58 > 0:39:01The inside was tired, with a nagging list of jobs

0:39:01 > 0:39:05that prevented further work from being carried out.

0:39:05 > 0:39:09Now it has a new lease of life and a bright future.

0:39:10 > 0:39:15The hall has been revamped and provides a bright and creative space for groups to enjoy.

0:39:17 > 0:39:23The once impractical and rundown disabled toilets have been completely refurbished.

0:39:25 > 0:39:29The cafe has had a face-lift and is now modern and fresh.

0:39:31 > 0:39:35We've given you a new ceiling up here, cos the old ceiling was completely gone.

0:39:35 > 0:39:41- Brilliant.- Fantastic.- The computers are all nicely fitted in there for just like an internet cafe.

0:39:41 > 0:39:43It's such a functional, great space.

0:39:43 > 0:39:47- And now we can do some of the adult training courses on the computers as well, that we wanted to do.- Yeah.

0:39:47 > 0:39:50The volunteers have put their heart and soul into this place,

0:39:50 > 0:39:53and obviously the clue is in the name. It's a community space.

0:39:53 > 0:39:57- I think it's definitely got a great future with you behind it.- Yeah, absolutely.

0:39:59 > 0:40:02Outside, we have removed derelict buildings.

0:40:02 > 0:40:06We've not only completely transformed the garden,

0:40:06 > 0:40:11but we've also extended it with a new pergola and a fire pit.

0:40:13 > 0:40:14- Da-dah!- Here you go, guys.

0:40:14 > 0:40:18- You coming out?- Wow.- Wow.

0:40:18 > 0:40:20- This is...- Keep coming round. - Keep coming round this way.

0:40:20 > 0:40:24Martyn and Nicki have had such a big hand in this.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26Come and have a look at this.

0:40:28 > 0:40:31The garden, for me, is stunning.

0:40:31 > 0:40:34It's somewhere for adults to sit,

0:40:34 > 0:40:37somewhere for children to play and it's clean and safe.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40- It's one space now rather than blocks of areas.- Yeah.

0:40:40 > 0:40:43It's almost like you've added a bit on.

0:40:43 > 0:40:46It's so much bigger. It's not only the extra space,

0:40:46 > 0:40:48it's the quality of the space.

0:40:48 > 0:40:51Everything now is so much more usable.

0:40:51 > 0:40:54- Yes.- And it's not a feeling of making do any more.

0:40:54 > 0:40:58It's friendlier now, isn't it? Before, it was oppressive.

0:40:58 > 0:41:01But, do you know, when I moved, first moved into this building,

0:41:01 > 0:41:05I didn't even know that arch was there. It was so overgrown.

0:41:05 > 0:41:08- Yeah.- I'm looking forward to coming to work tomorrow.

0:41:09 > 0:41:14It's going to be nice showing people round,

0:41:14 > 0:41:16- showing them what they can do here. - Yeah.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18Helping the local community have their events, their celebrations,

0:41:18 > 0:41:21running the programmes we love to run,

0:41:21 > 0:41:23that Pete spent so much time starting off.

0:41:23 > 0:41:27- Yes.- It's just going to be so much easier. It's going to be a pleasure.

0:41:29 > 0:41:33Altogether, more than 200 people have chipped in

0:41:33 > 0:41:37to help all the projects we have tackled in Bristol.

0:41:38 > 0:41:41Some gave a few hours. Others, days.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44But the legacy of that work will live on for many,

0:41:44 > 0:41:46many more years to come.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48Not bad, is it?

0:41:50 > 0:41:53You all know what it was like before.

0:41:53 > 0:41:57To see it like this now is amazing. You are great people.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59You feel like family. I just...

0:41:59 > 0:42:02I don't know how to thank you all for doing everything you've done.

0:42:02 > 0:42:05All I can say now is, when's the next party?

0:42:08 > 0:42:10Sooner than you think, Bruce!

0:42:13 > 0:42:16Buildings are just bricks and mortar,

0:42:16 > 0:42:19but fill them up with people and you have a community.

0:42:21 > 0:42:25A group of people who benefit from meeting each other,

0:42:25 > 0:42:28stronger together than alone.

0:42:28 > 0:42:31THEY SING "SCOTLAND THE BRAVE"

0:42:32 > 0:42:35# Oompa, oompa, oompa-pa

0:42:35 > 0:42:36# Oompa-pa, oompa-pa

0:42:36 > 0:42:38# Oompa, oompa, oompa-pa

0:42:38 > 0:42:41# Oompa, oom-pa-pa. #

0:42:41 > 0:42:43CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:42:49 > 0:42:52It's absolute mayhem in there. It's pure joy.

0:42:52 > 0:42:57It's good fun. And that is what this building was made for.

0:42:57 > 0:43:00That's what you can do with volunteers - and that is people power.
