0:00:11 > 0:00:15Well, today I'm going to Derby, getting out round the United Kingdom
0:00:15 > 0:00:17is one of the most enjoyable things that I do,
0:00:17 > 0:00:19and one of the best parts of this job - hearing people's views.
0:00:19 > 0:00:21You don't always like everything you hear,
0:00:21 > 0:00:23but it's very important you get out there and you listen.
0:00:23 > 0:00:26I think the biggest issue this election, when times are difficult,
0:00:26 > 0:00:28is which party is actually gonna make sure
0:00:28 > 0:00:31you get value for money for the services you want?
0:00:31 > 0:00:33So, we haven't just frozen the council tax,
0:00:33 > 0:00:36but also we're putting money into education,
0:00:36 > 0:00:38making sure the police are on our streets,
0:00:38 > 0:00:40actually making sure services are good value for money.
0:00:40 > 0:00:43That's what Conservative councils are doing -
0:00:43 > 0:00:45concentrating on what people want.
0:00:45 > 0:00:49You're off to a family firm that manufactures women's clothing.
0:00:49 > 0:00:50It's a really good example
0:00:50 > 0:00:52of a family business that's kept in Britain, invested in Britain,
0:00:52 > 0:00:55expanded in Britain. So, this is something I do a lot of,
0:00:55 > 0:00:57which is just going to people's workplaces,
0:00:57 > 0:00:59wandering around, chatting to people,
0:00:59 > 0:01:02answering questions and hearing about people's concerns.
0:01:02 > 0:01:04I think it's important politicians come to listen,
0:01:04 > 0:01:06because we're the voice of the people.
0:01:06 > 0:01:10They can see what a lot of ordinary people are doing day in and day out.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12Hi, how are you? Nice to see you.
0:01:12 > 0:01:14What are you going to do to try
0:01:14 > 0:01:17and get the textile trade back into the UK?
0:01:17 > 0:01:20We need to help businesses by funding more apprenticeships...
0:01:20 > 0:01:22- Oh, definitely.- ..Then you get young people into the business.- Yes.
0:01:22 > 0:01:24We've got to keep the business taxes down,
0:01:24 > 0:01:27so businesses can put money in and expand, as they have here.
0:01:27 > 0:01:29We've got to keep interest rates low.
0:01:29 > 0:01:30- We've worked hard all our lives... - Yes.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33And saved - never had flash cars, never gone on flash holidays...
0:01:33 > 0:01:36- Yeah.- And we're being penalised cos we've actually saved.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39- You've done the right thing.- Yeah. - When you do the right thing,
0:01:39 > 0:01:41the Government ought to back you and be behind you and help you.
0:01:41 > 0:01:43- Yeah, exactly.- You're keeping old-age pensioners in work
0:01:43 > 0:01:48when there's so many young 'uns on the streets what need jobs.
0:01:48 > 0:01:52I don't think, in an economy, there's just a set number of jobs
0:01:52 > 0:01:54and it's either for young people or older people.
0:01:54 > 0:01:56What we've got to try and do as a country is grow the number of jobs.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59Imagine you're Prime Minister for the day and you've got a magic wand,
0:01:59 > 0:02:01what's the first thing you'd do?
0:02:03 > 0:02:06- Give everybody a rise.- Give everyone a rise! I wish I could do that!
0:02:06 > 0:02:07LAUGHTER
0:02:07 > 0:02:09'You can read all sorts of bits of paper,
0:02:09 > 0:02:11'you can hear from all sorts of experts.'
0:02:11 > 0:02:13Thank you very much.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15But it's when you're here sitting down talking to someone
0:02:15 > 0:02:18about why they need this change or that change,
0:02:18 > 0:02:20that is so much more powerful than anything you read
0:02:20 > 0:02:22sat at a desk in Whitehall.
0:02:22 > 0:02:23One of the things that came through again and again
0:02:23 > 0:02:26was how many people said, "Look, I work hard, my husband works hard,
0:02:26 > 0:02:28"but we don't feel we get enough backing
0:02:28 > 0:02:30"as people who play by the rules."
0:02:30 > 0:02:32And I think that's such an important message for politicians.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34People should vote Conservative on May 3rd,
0:02:34 > 0:02:37cos we understand that family finances are tight.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40That's why Conservative councils are providing good value for money.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43That's what people want right now, that's what people need right now.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46Conservatives are on your side. That's how we'll help.
