0:00:10 > 0:00:13Good afternoon and you find me at the doctors.
0:00:13 > 0:00:15Well, you have to accept any appointment you can get these days.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17For those who don't recognise it,
0:00:17 > 0:00:20this is the location for the lunchtime dose
0:00:20 > 0:00:22of the medical drama, Doctors.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24That's right.
0:00:24 > 0:00:26As a nation of hypochondriacs, our evening appointments
0:00:26 > 0:00:30with Casualty and Holby just won't suffice
0:00:30 > 0:00:33so for the past 12 years there has been daytime surgery
0:00:33 > 0:00:35here in Letherbridge too.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38So it is a surgery but not as we know it
0:00:38 > 0:00:42in the same way that the captain of the Starship Enterprise
0:00:42 > 0:00:45William Shatner is a presenter.
0:00:45 > 0:00:46But maybe he doesn't know it.
0:01:07 > 0:01:13This is the G8 summit and Greece's attempts to "Klingon" to the euro...
0:01:13 > 0:01:16LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE
0:01:19 > 0:01:23Can I just say what a joy and what a surreal experience it is having you on the show?
0:01:23 > 0:01:26CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:01:26 > 0:01:31May I say...this is an out-of-body experience for me too! LAUGHTER
0:01:31 > 0:01:35So, Captain Kirk makes an excellent job of being a comedian
0:01:35 > 0:01:38anchoring a major BBC One production.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41But apparently the professional comedian
0:01:41 > 0:01:45and anchorman Dara O'Briain did NOT make an excellent job
0:01:45 > 0:01:48of being a comedian anchoring a major BBC One production.
0:02:07 > 0:02:09We're running to a tight schedule tonight.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13It's extremely tight because we've had to make extra space to allow
0:02:13 > 0:02:16Adele to finish the acceptance speech she started at the Brits.
0:02:16 > 0:02:18LAUGHTER
0:02:19 > 0:02:21No award for Dara, then.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23And it would seem Countryfile disappointed
0:02:23 > 0:02:26its usually loyal audience last week too.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29The programme was billed as featuring new filming
0:02:29 > 0:02:31based around the Humber.
0:02:31 > 0:02:32Except lots of the filming wasn't new
0:02:32 > 0:02:36and wasn't based around the Humber which could be a problem.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14Short-changed by Countryfile?! What is the world coming to?
0:03:14 > 0:03:19I've been doing my sums and last week's hour-long episode was one of the scheduled
0:03:19 > 0:03:22compilation programmes which repeats
0:03:22 > 0:03:27previously-filmed material from the three years since the format changed in 2009.
0:03:27 > 0:03:32Cos there's not much better than being on the Humber in the boats that bear its name.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35But in amongst the repeats there were around 23 minutes
0:03:35 > 0:03:37of new features.
0:03:53 > 0:03:55We have been gently nudged onto BBC Two today
0:03:55 > 0:03:59but Countryfile will be on as usual this evening on BBC One
0:03:59 > 0:04:02when they are promising to be in Northern Ireland.
0:04:02 > 0:04:05And Simon Reeve will also be in his usual slot this evening
0:04:05 > 0:04:07which should please a lot of people.
0:04:20 > 0:04:24Whoa, look! There's cars coming the wrong way down the road. HORN TOOTS
0:04:24 > 0:04:26Get off the road!
0:04:26 > 0:04:29It's a dual carriageway, going that way.
0:04:29 > 0:04:32There are law-abiding citizens of India
0:04:32 > 0:04:36driving in the correct manner that way on the other side of the road.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40And there are numpty muppets driving giant trucks
0:04:40 > 0:04:44directly at our vehicle on our side of the road. Whoa!
0:04:44 > 0:04:46And whilst we're in the mood for globetrotting,
0:04:46 > 0:04:49although they have not personally dropped us a line to say so,
0:04:49 > 0:04:53Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are said to be
0:04:53 > 0:04:56huge fans of the foreign drama acquisition, The Killing.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59In fact, Camilla's not just seen it, she's got the T-shirt.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01Well, the pullover.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04I must say I got hooked to both series of The Killing too
0:05:04 > 0:05:06and Borgen, the political one.
0:05:06 > 0:05:10BBC Four is doing really well with these international dramas
0:05:10 > 0:05:12and it seems the appreciative royals are in good company.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48I do think that what BBC Four is offering of the moment
0:05:48 > 0:05:49is a pretty broad range of programming.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53Inspector Montalbano from Italy, Spiral from France,
0:05:53 > 0:05:57and then of course our, what's been dubbed, Nordic noir,
0:05:57 > 0:06:01the Scandinavian dramas such as The Bridge, The Killing and of course Borgen.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04And the key is that we're interested in the very best of
0:06:04 > 0:06:08foreign dramas which deliver complex, complicated,
0:06:08 > 0:06:10enjoyable, entertaining dramas made to the highest quality.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13When we first looked at The Killing -
0:06:13 > 0:06:16and we bought The Killing off the back of an afternoon
0:06:16 > 0:06:17watching a number of dramas.
0:06:17 > 0:06:20We had some coffee and cake and watched half a dozen different dramas
0:06:20 > 0:06:23and The Killing stood out as the great offering.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26I thought straight away this might be something BBC Four audiences would like.
0:06:26 > 0:06:29I have to confess, I couldn't have predicted it would be
0:06:29 > 0:06:31the talked-about drama of 2011.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34Now on BBC Four, with the whole country seemingly hooked
0:06:34 > 0:06:39on Danish drama, it seemed only fair that we feed your addiction.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42There's some strong language in a double bill of Borgen.
0:06:42 > 0:06:46Borgen came along sometime after The Killing
0:06:46 > 0:06:48and it was instantly an attractive proposition.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52The fact that it happens to be that we are in a coalition government
0:06:52 > 0:06:56and this series was about the politics of a coalition government are coincidence.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01In the pipeline we've got a new drama coming up
0:07:01 > 0:07:04called Lillehammer which is set in Lillehammer,
0:07:04 > 0:07:08in Norway, and it's the story of an American wise guy, a mafia type,
0:07:08 > 0:07:09who is on a security programme.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12He's snitched on his mates in America and he has to flee.
0:07:12 > 0:07:17We've also got Killing 3 coming up and of course Borgen and The Bridge will be back.
0:07:17 > 0:07:22And from Scandinavia - clearly the new home of successful drama -
0:07:22 > 0:07:26to Poland and the Ukraine where Panorama exposed
0:07:26 > 0:07:28racism in football in a way that was really shocking.
0:07:28 > 0:07:33If you're arriving here by train, this is the greeting you'll get.
0:07:33 > 0:07:37And further down the platform it doesn't say, "Welcome to Warsaw",
0:07:37 > 0:07:39it says, "Welcome to Hell".
0:07:40 > 0:07:43This graffiti celebrates the White Legion,
0:07:43 > 0:07:47one of many violent groups organised around football.
0:08:12 > 0:08:16Let's take a look. Yep, they should be the other way round.
0:08:16 > 0:08:18And whilst we're examining things closely
0:08:18 > 0:08:20and particularly as it is Jubilee weekend -
0:08:20 > 0:08:22BBC producers take note -
0:08:22 > 0:08:26do not show the Union Flag flying upside down, please!
0:09:11 > 0:09:17But this was the moment the torch reached the peak of its 70-day journey and burned bright.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21MUSIC: "God Save The Queen"
0:09:21 > 0:09:23And for those of you still unsure,
0:09:23 > 0:09:25this is how the flag should be flown.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28Broad white stripe at the top at the pole side
0:09:28 > 0:09:30or if no pole, then at the left.
0:09:30 > 0:09:35# God save our Queen. #
0:09:35 > 0:09:38All flags will be kept under close scrutiny this weekend.
0:09:38 > 0:09:41Now, one thing TV has led many of us to do in recent years
0:09:41 > 0:09:45is pay much closer attention to family heirlooms.
0:09:45 > 0:09:48The plethora of TV antique shows where the contents
0:09:48 > 0:09:51of an outhouse or a chance find at a car boot sale
0:09:51 > 0:09:57have proved to be worth thousands have had us all hoping to turn up some treasure ourselves.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00But viewer Chris Dunkley claims the hunt for high-value collectables
0:10:00 > 0:10:04has devalued antiques programmes themselves.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07Not only do I think there are too many antiques programmes on,
0:10:07 > 0:10:09but a lot of them don't contain antiques.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14Call it "Junk Shop Challenge" or something, I don't care
0:10:14 > 0:10:17what you call it but please do not call it antiques
0:10:17 > 0:10:18when it's not antiques.
0:10:18 > 0:10:21This kingfisher salt and pepper set
0:10:21 > 0:10:24is not antique, having been recently made.
0:10:24 > 0:10:28My interest in antiques started with Arthur Negus and Going For A Song.
0:10:28 > 0:10:31- Hello.- But you see, he spent time talking about them.
0:10:31 > 0:10:36He spent time explaining where they came from, how they were made,
0:10:36 > 0:10:41all the intrinsic things you want to know about an antique.
0:10:41 > 0:10:46An English silver bell salt made during the reign of Elizabeth I.
0:10:46 > 0:10:50You know what present-day salt cellars are like and you know
0:10:50 > 0:10:53what those horrible little pimpy Victorian salt cellars are like.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56It was really interesting and that's really the thing I'm beefing about,
0:10:56 > 0:10:59is the lack of interest in some of these things.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01I'd like to get something in here for about two pounds,
0:11:01 > 0:11:03it might be a big ask though.
0:11:03 > 0:11:07The one that really gets me is the Antiques Road Trip.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10That really upsets me for the simple reason that,
0:11:10 > 0:11:13I think with the dealers, when they're confronted by the experts
0:11:13 > 0:11:15and no doubt a camera crew,
0:11:15 > 0:11:18they feel obliged and pressurised a little bit into selling.
0:11:18 > 0:11:22They must do. I don't think that's acceptable, I really don't.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24Tunbridge Ware, what could you do on that one?
0:11:24 > 0:11:26How does 125 sound?
0:11:26 > 0:11:31I'd prefer 60. I'm on my hands and knee... I'm on my knees here.
0:11:31 > 0:11:36- The ticket price is £34. - In an ideal world, at £15.
0:11:36 > 0:11:39I mean, he may walk into a lovely antique shop, point at an object
0:11:39 > 0:11:44and say, "Yep, I'll offer you £2.50 for that, Tim, what do you think?"
0:11:44 > 0:11:47I'd say, "I'm sorry, Chris, there's absolutely no chance."
0:11:47 > 0:11:48Just be honest about it.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51Let's have proper antiques, proper prices and do a good job.
0:12:30 > 0:12:32So, low offers are not always going for a song
0:12:32 > 0:12:35or indeed going, going, gone it would seem.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38Now, stethoscope in hand, we should have a search for the pulse rate
0:12:38 > 0:12:41of Doctors itself since we're here.
0:12:41 > 0:12:43Is this series still pumping with energy,
0:12:43 > 0:12:45still beating after 12 years?
0:12:45 > 0:12:49- So we get to carry on being doctors? - You're all fit for purpose, I'd say.
0:12:49 > 0:12:50Congratulations, Howard.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54- You've got the makings of an excellent practice here.- Thank you.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18"Love to hate", eh, Bright? But you're still watching, I see.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20So that's me off the waiting list.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23If you've got anything you want to get off YOUR chest about BBC TV,
0:13:23 > 0:13:24we would love you to write to us.
0:13:28 > 0:13:31And you know there's an e-mail address too, the address is:
0:13:34 > 0:13:37or you can jump on the messageboard where it's lively.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42You could also phone us, the number is charged as
0:13:42 > 0:13:45a local rate call from a landline and it is:
0:13:49 > 0:13:50Goodbye.
