0:00:29 > 0:00:32And while the build up was far from ideal, with political scandals,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35a financial crisis and worries about the Zika virus,

0:00:35 > 0:00:41Brazil was always going to offer a spectacular setting

0:00:41 > 0:00:44for South America's first ever Olympic and Paralympic Games.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48There'd be plenty of time for selfies after the success,

0:01:36 > 0:01:36Not without its drama.

0:01:42 > 0:01:43Fallen, clip there.

0:01:43 > 0:01:44Bumps, barges...

0:02:03 > 0:02:04birth to her son Reggie.

0:02:04 > 0:02:13Could she retain her title?

0:02:13 > 0:02:15She fought hard and competed with such valour.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18To come away with Silver was a great achievement for a woman who has just

0:02:19 > 0:02:21graced the tracks for so many years.

0:02:21 > 0:02:27And so to Greg, desperate to try to retain his title.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Just every athlete's dream.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Hasn't sunk in yet.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02British women had high hopes in the 4x1 -

0:03:02 > 0:03:04could they actually come through and take a medal?

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Yes they could!

0:03:07 > 0:03:09GB for Bronze!

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Doing a fantastic job to bring home a medal for Britain.

0:03:12 > 0:03:17Medals in the 4x4, taking that Bronze.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19And who could forget Sophie Hitchon in the women's hammer!

0:03:19 > 0:03:20Bronze medal.

0:03:20 > 0:03:21Totally unexpected.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23But boy did she work hard for it!

0:03:23 > 0:03:27Coming through on the sixth and final throw.

0:03:27 > 0:03:34Overall, fantastic championships for British athletics.

0:03:34 > 0:03:40A lot has to go to Mo!

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Hi, I'm Vicky Holland, and in Rio I became the first

0:03:43 > 0:03:46British woman to ever win an Olympic triathlon medal.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49The race was tough conditions, interesting surf swim

0:03:49 > 0:03:52followed by a hilly tough bike ride, flat run, hot humid sprint finish.

0:03:52 > 0:03:53I came out with a Bronze.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57Having watched the Olympics from six years old, in front of the tv,

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Having watched the Olympics from six years old, in front of the tv,

0:04:00 > 0:04:03to coming home and finally having a medal was everything I wanted.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07Obviously triathlon has a couple of other superstars in the sport.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Alistair and Jonny did fantastically well to win Gold and Silver.

0:04:10 > 0:04:11The pioneers of triathlon.

0:04:11 > 0:04:19I'm so pleased to have won a medal alongside them.

0:04:19 > 0:04:20The British success didn't stop there.

0:04:20 > 0:04:25Golf made a controversial return.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28But GB's Justin Rose loved his time in Brazil.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31Becoming the sport's first Olympic Gold medallist for 112 years.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Andy Murray had an unbelievable year and defended his Olympic tennis

0:04:34 > 0:04:42title after an epic battle with Argentina's Del Potro.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45The tennis venue is the crown jewel of venue's in the Rio Olympic Park

0:04:45 > 0:04:47and just a matter of metres away, the velodrome.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50One of the most challenging and finished just weeks

0:04:50 > 0:04:51before the Olympics began.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55That said, any issues that organisers had paled

0:04:55 > 0:04:57into insignificance next to the difficult build up GB Cycling

0:04:58 > 0:04:59had ahead of the Olympics.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01Performance manager Shane Sutton resigned after allegations

0:05:01 > 0:05:06of bullying and sexist comments.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Results on the track had been mixed at best.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11But once again they peaked when it mattered most.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Gill Douglas rounds up the action.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16One Gold medal up for grabs on the opening day.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Men's team sprint.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23For four years GB had struggled to fill the shoes

0:05:23 > 0:05:26of Sir Chris Hoy in the anchor role.

0:05:26 > 0:05:36But lead out by defending champions Phillip Hines and Jason Kenny,

0:05:37 > 0:05:38another Scot, Callum Skinner rose to the occasion.

0:05:38 > 0:05:39Towards the line!

0:05:39 > 0:05:40Gold for GB!

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Champions again!

0:05:42 > 0:05:46The next day, all the focus was on one man, Sir Bradley Wiggins.

0:05:46 > 0:05:53Could he become GB's most decorated Olympian of all time?

0:05:53 > 0:05:57The British quartet of Wiggins, Ed Clandy and Steven Burke

0:05:57 > 0:05:59and Owain Doull trailed all the way till the closing stages.

0:05:59 > 0:06:00Britain?

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Australia?

0:06:02 > 0:06:04Certainly GB in record time!

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Another day, another Gold.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11This time a successful defence of the women's team

0:06:11 > 0:06:13pursuit as Laura Trott, alongside Joanna Rowsell Shand,

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Eleanor Barker and Katie Archibald became the first British women

0:06:16 > 0:06:21to win three Olympic Golds.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Not to be outdone by his fiance, Jason Kenny retained his Olympic

0:06:23 > 0:06:30crown in the individual sprint.

0:06:30 > 0:06:31Beating compatriot Callum Skinner into Silver.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Becky James put more than two years of injury and illness

0:06:34 > 0:06:37behind her to take Silver.

0:06:37 > 0:06:46While Mark Cavendish's status as one of the all time greats

0:06:46 > 0:06:49on the road is undisputed, at his third Olympic Games an Olympic medal

0:06:49 > 0:06:50was still a big hole.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Many doubted the omnium would change that.

0:06:52 > 0:06:53How wrong they were.

0:06:53 > 0:06:54After all the effort...

0:06:54 > 0:06:55Mark Cavendish has an Olympic medal.

0:06:55 > 0:07:01Silver.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03The sixth and final day brought more Gold.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Trott inked her way further into the record books

0:07:05 > 0:07:08with an emphatic defence of her omnium title.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12Becky James celebrated a second Silver in the individual sprint

0:07:12 > 0:07:16and Katy Marchant showed promise for the future with Bronze.

0:07:16 > 0:07:23Jason Kenny going for a British record...

0:07:23 > 0:07:26In the final event, aiming to match Sir Chris Hoy's feat

0:07:26 > 0:07:28and secure his third Gold of the Games.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30And equal his predecessor's record total of six.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34Golden hat-trick in Rio!

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Jason Kenny!

0:07:37 > 0:07:38British record equalling sixth Gold!

0:07:38 > 0:07:40For the third Olympics in a row, GB dominated

0:07:40 > 0:07:41proceedings in the velodrome.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45Golden performance from the whole of the British squad.

0:07:45 > 0:07:50And not to be forgotten out on the road, Chris Froome followed

0:07:50 > 0:07:58up a third Tour de France victory with time trial Olympic bronze.

0:07:58 > 0:08:05Swimming is undoubtedly one of the most popular Olympic sports.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07But the British team had been noticeable absentees

0:08:07 > 0:08:09from the podium among most sports at London 2012.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11They missed the medal target, just three.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13But four years on, led by a new generation,

0:08:13 > 0:08:18results would be different.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Here's double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington's take.

0:08:20 > 0:08:28It was a target of four-six medals going to Rio.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30I think Adam Peaty got the ball absolutely rolling.

0:08:30 > 0:08:31Brilliant.

0:08:31 > 0:08:32Fantastic.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Adam takes Olympic Gold by a street!

0:08:34 > 0:08:41Obliterated the world record!

0:08:41 > 0:08:43Most of the time it's literally down to fingernails.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46Winning by such a way over 100 is huge.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50So surreal.

0:08:50 > 0:08:51Team GB's first Gold.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55This is a product of seven years of work.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57More importantly, did it for my country.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59So important.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02Just to be one of those next to Adam Peaty who's just got

0:09:02 > 0:09:05Gold, just lifts you.

0:09:05 > 0:09:10For those boys, the relay, Silver, so impressive.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13For me it shows the depth in British swimming.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17We can back it up.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20Men's 4x200, girls equally did well.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24Jazz getting two Silvers.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26I felt so attached, the events I used to do.

0:09:26 > 0:09:31So pleased.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33Rio was her moment.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36Siobhan as well.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38The fact she pushed the competition, scared her,

0:09:38 > 0:09:46a sense of what's to come.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48They're going to have an even better Tokyo Olympics.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Inspired by the success of the British swimmers, GB divers

0:09:50 > 0:09:57aimed to make their own impact here at the aquatic park.

0:09:57 > 0:10:03From a British perspective, it's no longer just about London Bronze

0:10:03 > 0:10:04medallist Tom Daley.

0:10:04 > 0:10:13He was here but he has talented team-mates!

0:10:13 > 0:10:14So here come the Brits...

0:10:14 > 0:10:19Jack Law and Chris Mears.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22This pair are gunning for a medal.

0:10:22 > 0:10:23Here they go.

0:10:23 > 0:10:24Yes!

0:10:24 > 0:10:26Good enough!

0:10:26 > 0:10:27Yes!

0:10:27 > 0:10:28Yes!

0:10:28 > 0:10:29Yes!

0:10:29 > 0:10:33This is the moment for Jack and Chris...

0:10:33 > 0:10:36Yes!

0:10:36 > 0:10:37Come on!

0:10:37 > 0:10:38It is Gold!

0:10:38 > 0:10:43Pure Gold for Jack and Chris!

0:10:43 > 0:10:53Law and Mears have done it!

0:10:53 > 0:10:54Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56This is going to have to be so good.

0:10:56 > 0:10:57Last one.

0:10:57 > 0:10:58Enough?

0:10:58 > 0:10:59Going to be so close.

0:10:59 > 0:11:00Wait and see...

0:11:00 > 0:11:02Done it!

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Daley and Goodfellow are Bronze medallists!

0:11:06 > 0:11:07Jack Law...

0:11:07 > 0:11:08Yes!

0:11:08 > 0:11:09Get in!

0:11:09 > 0:11:11Tremendous.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Silver to add to Gold.

0:11:14 > 0:11:23Tremendous performance by Jack Law.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26Hi everyone.

0:11:26 > 0:11:32I'm Jade Jones and I won my second taekwondo Gold in Rio.

0:11:32 > 0:11:33Relief more than anything.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Having all that pressure, number one, so much expectation.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38Just amazing to do it on the day.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41Nail it.

0:11:41 > 0:11:42In good style.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Great Games for GB taekwondo.

0:11:45 > 0:11:51You may remember this interview!

0:11:51 > 0:11:56Half second from accomplishing my dream!

0:11:56 > 0:12:03I don't want to cry on TV but I'm distraught!

0:12:03 > 0:12:09He'll be back in Tokyo.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11But another impressive medal.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14Bianca Walkden claimed heavyweight bronze.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18One more sport I like and GB happen to be good at is boxing.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20Like me, Nicola Adams also defended her title.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23Whilst there was silver for super heavyweight Joe Joyce

0:12:23 > 0:12:28and Josh Buatsi took home bronze.

0:12:28 > 0:12:33Rounding off the combat sports is judo.

0:12:33 > 0:12:37Sally Conway claimed Olympic bronze medal in the -70 kilos division.

0:12:37 > 0:12:41Still to come on the programme: We find out how the British rowing

0:12:41 > 0:12:45team continued their gold-medal run which goes all the way back to 1984.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48Hollie Webb gives us her take on that penalty which secured the GB

0:12:48 > 0:12:53women's hockey team a historic first-ever Olympic title.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55And we take a look at some of the record-breaking successes

0:12:55 > 0:13:01for Britain's Paralympic athletes in Rio.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Next, to gymnastics, and a sport which from a British

0:13:03 > 0:13:05perspective has undergone a massive transformation over

0:13:05 > 0:13:08the last decade or so.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10Back at the 2004 Athens Olympics GB had just one male

0:13:11 > 0:13:12qualifier and won no medals.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16They now have some of the best gymnasts in the world.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18And here at the Rio Olympic Arena history would be made.

0:13:18 > 0:13:24London 2012 bronze medallist Beth Tweddle watched it all unfold.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27This summer was incredible for Team GB gymnastics.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31I don't think ten years ago we could have ever dreamt of coming

0:13:31 > 0:13:33home with seven Olympic medals.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35Max Whitlock picking up double Olympic gold,

0:13:35 > 0:13:39one of them being on the floor, which, to be honest,

0:13:39 > 0:13:42I think I can openly say I don't think anyone would have expected.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46He suddenly found himself in medal contention and I don't think even

0:13:46 > 0:13:49realised when he had won the gold, I think his coach

0:13:49 > 0:13:52actually had to tell him.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55And then to put that behind him an hour later he had to walk out

0:13:55 > 0:13:57into the pommel final with Louis Smith.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00We knew it was going to be a close contest.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03But Louis did the routine of his life and then Max Whitlock

0:14:03 > 0:14:12also performed the routine of his life and took home that gold.

0:14:12 > 0:14:15I have completely outdone myself, me and Scott can stand here very

0:14:15 > 0:14:16proud, it's just incredible.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19To come into the Olympic Games, I don't know what to say,

0:14:19 > 0:14:20I'm just so happy.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22To see one and two for Great Britain on that Olympic

0:14:22 > 0:14:25podium was so special.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27The next medal came from Amy Tinkler.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29She's the only other girl that's won an Olympic medal

0:14:29 > 0:14:32and she's only 16 years old.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36Three weeks later she was picking up her GCSEs.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40So it just shows how far British gymnastics are coming on.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43Nile then went on to pick up that medal in the high bar,

0:14:43 > 0:14:46the first-ever British medal for us on that piece of apparatus.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48That is going to challenge, Nile Wilson.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51We cannot forget about Max, he also picked up a third medal

0:14:51 > 0:14:54with the bronze in the all-around.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Three Olympic medals for him.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00And finally for trampolining, Bryony Page picking up

0:15:00 > 0:15:01the surprise silver medal.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03I don't think she could believe it.

0:15:03 > 0:15:10What an achievement.

0:15:10 > 0:15:13For me, to stand there in the stands being on the other

0:15:13 > 0:15:16side of the stage I thought I was going to be a little bit

0:15:16 > 0:15:19nervous, and a little bit, do I wish I were still out there?

0:15:19 > 0:15:21But actually I was just proud to be British.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24One of the major worry is heading into the real Olympics

0:15:24 > 0:15:26concerned water pollution following the discovery of drug

0:15:26 > 0:15:28resistant super bacteria in the Guanabara Bay

0:15:28 > 0:15:30and some inland venues.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34Would it impact athletes in some of Britain's most successful sports?

0:15:34 > 0:15:35In short, not much.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37Years of intense preparations clearly paid off as

0:15:37 > 0:15:42David McDaid explains.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45There are no guarantees in sport of victory for Helen Glover

0:15:45 > 0:15:47and Heather Stanning comes pretty close.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49They had gone five years unbeaten into the games

0:15:49 > 0:15:51and ended their career together with another success,

0:15:51 > 0:15:54defending their Olympic women's pairs title.

0:15:54 > 0:15:58They are fearless, they are without equal,

0:15:58 > 0:16:01they are history makers, Great Britain's Glover and Stanning

0:16:01 > 0:16:07defend their Olympic title and they have done it in such style.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10There would be gold medals, too, for the men's coxless fours

0:16:10 > 0:16:12and the men's eight.

0:16:12 > 0:16:17Many thought that Katherine Grainger would retire after London

0:16:17 > 0:16:22but the temptation to return proved too strong.

0:16:22 > 0:16:26Aged over 40 and after a long break from the sport it is perhaps little

0:16:26 > 0:16:28surprise she and Vicky Thornley failed to impress in

0:16:28 > 0:16:29the lead up to the Games.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32But when the pressure was on the result was different.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34It's a silver medal today.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Considering what we have been through the last couple of years I'm

0:16:37 > 0:16:41so proud of what we have done.

0:16:41 > 0:16:45That is a medal that not many people would have given us so I'm pleased.

0:16:45 > 0:16:46Tokyo?

0:16:46 > 0:16:49Mum and dad, I promise, I'll never put you through that again.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51After the rowing, the lake was clear for the Sprint canoeists

0:16:51 > 0:16:54and Liam Heath lived up to his billing as one

0:16:54 > 0:17:01of the pregames favourites with victory in the K1 200.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03He also partnered John Schofield to siler in the same

0:17:03 > 0:17:05distance in the K2 category.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08Few saw Joe Clarke as a medal prospect in slalom, but he produced

0:17:08 > 0:17:10one of the shocks of the games with a near-perfect

0:17:10 > 0:17:11run to claim K1 gold.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14It was absolutely great.

0:17:14 > 0:17:23David Florence secured a third successive silver of his career,

0:17:23 > 0:17:26teaming up with Richard Hounslow to finish second in the C2 event.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28Finally, to sailing, and there would be no

0:17:28 > 0:17:31Sir Ben Ainslie in these games but his replacement in the Finn

0:17:31 > 0:17:33class, Giles Scott, delivered a performance Ben Ainslie would have

0:17:33 > 0:17:34been proud of.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36To win his maiden Olympic title.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Saskia Clark and Hannah Mills also navigated the tricky Rio

0:17:38 > 0:17:40waters to perfection, and upgraded their London

0:17:40 > 0:17:432012 silver to Rio gold.

0:17:43 > 0:17:51The windsurfer Nick Dempsey took silver and became the first man

0:17:51 > 0:17:53to win three career Olympic medals in this event.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57Hello, my name is Hollie Webb and I was a member of the Team GB

0:17:57 > 0:18:00women's hockey team that won a gold medal at the Rio games.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04We knew that if we could get a good game under our belts in the first

0:18:04 > 0:18:07game then we could use that momentum all the way through the tournament.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09And the game is tough, as we expect against Australia,

0:18:09 > 0:18:11but we managed to win that game.

0:18:11 > 0:18:16Absolute beauty!

0:18:16 > 0:18:19We topped the pool, and won all of our pool games and I can

0:18:19 > 0:18:22remember thinking that night, gosh, we're going to have to win

0:18:22 > 0:18:24every single game now to win the Rio Olympic Games.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27So our next massive, massive focus was the quarterfinal.

0:18:27 > 0:18:28What an easy finish for Lily Owsley.

0:18:28 > 0:18:29We drew Spain.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31We managed to win that game as well.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34The semifinal we were up against the Kiwis,

0:18:34 > 0:18:36who were ludicrously fast and so athletic and we

0:18:36 > 0:18:42managed to win 3-0.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45Our coach just said to us, OK, one more game.

0:18:45 > 0:18:46Great Britain are in the Olympic final.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49The Netherlands hadn't lost at the Olympic Games since 2004.

0:18:49 > 0:18:54We knew it would be a big challenge.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58The Dutch played out of their skins and were sort of all over us.

0:18:58 > 0:18:59We had to fend for our lives.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01Inside the circle, Maddie Hinch is down, the angle...

0:19:01 > 0:19:03They had four chances and scored three.

0:19:03 > 0:19:04It ended 3-3.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07We were in a positive place going into the penalties,

0:19:07 > 0:19:08and each person went, Maddie was making some incredible

0:19:09 > 0:19:13saves, as she always does.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15Maddie Hinch absolutely brilliant.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17It came to the third one, and Helen scored hers.

0:19:17 > 0:19:22Great Britain are off the mark in the shoot out.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25If I scored my last one then that would be it, we would win.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28So we went up, made sure I went really slowly

0:19:28 > 0:19:30so the goalie was waiting for me.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32Make sure I looked in the eyes and looked as big

0:19:32 > 0:19:33and confident as possible.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37Hollie Webb on her way, to win gold for Great Britain.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41Webb...

0:19:41 > 0:19:42Turns, scores!

0:19:42 > 0:19:44That's the golden goal.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Great Britain have won the Olympic gold medal.

0:19:47 > 0:19:57The best feeling in the world.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02Hi, I'm Charlotte Dujardin and I won the individual gold and team silver

0:20:02 > 0:20:09in the dressage in Rio.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11Winning my individual gold meant the world to me

0:20:11 > 0:20:21and it was the perfect way to finish my career with Valegro.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23Showjumper Nick Skelton became Britain's second oldest Olympic

0:20:23 > 0:20:25champion of all time.

0:20:25 > 0:20:35He's done it!

0:20:36 > 0:20:38Two other sports at the Diadoro cluster were rugby

0:20:38 > 0:20:43sevens and shooting.

0:20:43 > 0:20:49The men's rugby team took home silver in the sport's Olympic debut,

0:20:49 > 0:20:51while GB shooters had two bronze medals to celebrate.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54Ed Lling in the trap and Steven Scott in the double trap

0:20:54 > 0:20:55claiming the honours.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58Can you sum up what this incredible bronze medal means to you?

0:20:58 > 0:21:03Easy, there you go, a smile.

0:21:03 > 0:21:04Finally, to badminton.

0:21:04 > 0:21:09GB secured their first medal in the sport since 2004,

0:21:09 > 0:21:11with Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge claiming

0:21:11 > 0:21:15men's doubles bronze.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18Rio's breathtaking geography and spectacular seafront made

0:21:18 > 0:21:22for a stunning setting but the city isn't without its problems and life

0:21:22 > 0:21:26for disabled people here can be far from straightforward.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29So the Rio Paralympics was seen as an opportunity to improve

0:21:29 > 0:21:35accessibility and attitudes here in Brazil.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38The British team were hoping to improve on their medal

0:21:38 > 0:21:39success from London 2012.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41Dame Sarah Storey already had an incredible haul heading into Rio

0:21:41 > 0:21:44and that was further extended.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46Three gold medals saw her become GB's most successful female

0:21:46 > 0:21:48Paralympian of all time.

0:21:48 > 0:21:54With 14 titles.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56Other highlights included Jonnie Peacock sprinting his way

0:21:56 > 0:22:03to a stunning defence of his 100 metre crown.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05The historic 1-2-3 for the GB archers, an emotional table tennis

0:22:05 > 0:22:07victory for Will Bayley, and brilliant hat tricks

0:22:07 > 0:22:10for Hannah Cockroft on the track, Bethany Firth in the poll,

0:22:10 > 0:22:12as well as for the equestrian stars Sophie Christiansen

0:22:12 > 0:22:17and Natasha Baker.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19There were countless others who also excelled.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21Here's Kate Grey's take on the best of the rest.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24The older more experienced members of

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Paralympics GB delivered once again here in Rio.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28But the young new stars have also made their mark.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30The one standout performer was Kadeena Cox,

0:22:30 > 0:22:33for whom one sport just wasn't enough.

0:22:33 > 0:22:35Winning gold in both cycling and athletics.

0:22:35 > 0:22:40That is so crazy!

0:22:40 > 0:22:41It is just normal, but everyone seems

0:22:41 > 0:22:43to think I have done something special.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46It is amazing, the support and the warm welcome.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48It makes you feel so special and grateful for

0:22:48 > 0:22:50everyone that has supported me.

0:22:50 > 0:22:5215-year-old Ellie Robinson and carrier Dunnigan were inspired by

0:22:52 > 0:22:55London 2012.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58Four years on they've now become medallists here in Rio on

0:22:58 > 0:22:59their Paralympic debut.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01It was also great to see the veterans of the

0:23:01 > 0:23:04team still topping the podium.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08Sasha Kindred and Jody Cundy both competing in their sixth Paralympic

0:23:08 > 0:23:14games and both still winning gold.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16But we can't ignore the fact GB's success has been helped

0:23:16 > 0:23:19by the absence of Russia and the doping ban.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21But considering there were fears that these games would

0:23:21 > 0:23:24not even happen at all in the lead up, for 11 days the Brazilian people

0:23:24 > 0:23:28have embraced the Paralympic spirit.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30GB finished an impressive second in the medal table behind

0:23:30 > 0:23:37China, with a stunning total of 147 medals.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39Back to the Olympics now and away from the Golden performances of

0:23:39 > 0:23:42the British team in Rio, there were of course many incredible

0:23:42 > 0:23:47achievements by athletes from other countries as well.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49Usain Bolt rounded off an unbelievable Olympic

0:23:49 > 0:23:58career with the third sprint treble for Jamaica,

0:23:58 > 0:24:03winning the 100 metres, 200 metres and the 4x100 metre relays.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06I look on it as pressure, you know what I mean?

0:24:06 > 0:24:08I enjoy pressure, I live for these moments, and for me

0:24:09 > 0:24:10it is beautiful.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12I came through and I was proud of myself.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14From the greatest sprinter of all time to the

0:24:14 > 0:24:15greatest ever swimmer, Michael Phelps has rewritten

0:24:15 > 0:24:18the record books time and time again for the

0:24:18 > 0:24:19USA.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21And extended his honour list to an incredible 28 medals,

0:24:21 > 0:24:2323 of those gold, from five Olympics.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25He has said it before but insists he is now

0:24:25 > 0:24:26retired for good.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29Next to the host nation and from poverty to the

0:24:29 > 0:24:29podium.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32Raffaella Silva grew up in one of Rio's toughest

0:24:32 > 0:24:34neighbourhoods, was disqualified in London, and labelled an

0:24:34 > 0:24:35embarrassment.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37A fairy tale turnaround was completed with an

0:24:37 > 0:24:40emotional victory and Brazil's first gold of the games.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43The title the hosts crave more than any came in

0:24:43 > 0:24:45their favourite sport, never before have Brazil won

0:24:45 > 0:24:55an Olympic football gold, but inspired by Barcelona star

0:24:55 > 0:24:57Neymar, they finally completed football's grand slam of titles.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59200 hundred million Brazilians scream with

0:24:59 > 0:25:00delight!

0:25:00 > 0:25:02There were also pretty wild celebrations from the Fijian rugby

0:25:02 > 0:25:05sevens team, who won their country's first-ever Olympic gold, while

0:25:05 > 0:25:10American teenage gymnast Simone Biles dazzled

0:25:10 > 0:25:13with four gold medals, a star now and for the future games.

0:25:13 > 0:25:17It was a golden games for so many nations,

0:25:17 > 0:25:21but with 67 medals, 27 of them gold, it was a historic Olympics for Great

0:25:21 > 0:25:24Britain.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28They became the first nation ever to beat their total from

0:25:28 > 0:25:30a home games and just four years later,

0:25:30 > 0:25:31and finished second on the

0:25:31 > 0:25:38medal table behind the USA and ahead of China.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41Rio 2016 was an incredible games, it saw us say goodbye to

0:25:41 > 0:25:43major names like Sir Bradley Wiggins and Jessica Ennis-Hill, who won't be

0:25:44 > 0:25:45competing at the next Olympics.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48But it saw the rise of new stars who will be looking to build

0:25:48 > 0:25:49on their successes.

0:25:49 > 0:25:59So from the road to Rio we are now on the Trail to Tokyo.

0:26:09 > 0:26:09Good

0:26:09 > 0:26:09Good afternoon.

0:26:09 > 0:26:09Good afternoon. Most

0:26:09 > 0:26:09Good afternoon. Most of

0:26:09 > 0:26:10Good afternoon. Most of us
