:00:00. > :00:17.the year's sporting highlights, in the review 2016, the in sport.
:00:18. > :00:23.Hello and welcome to Salford, the home of BBC sport.
:00:24. > :00:26.With the Olympics, the Paralympics, the European Championship, and a
:00:27. > :00:30.whole host of other major sporting events, 2016 was a year that began
:00:31. > :01:04.full of optimism, and it did not disappoint.
:01:05. > :01:10.2016 was eight years of extraordinary sporting achievement,
:01:11. > :01:15.athletes striving to go faster, higher, stronger, if those were the
:01:16. > :01:19.names then this is very much their award, heroes Parade, returning
:01:20. > :01:24.Paralympics and Olympians, many are living up to the high expectations,
:01:25. > :01:29.so many surpassing it. There's only one place really we can start this
:01:30. > :01:33.review of 2016, and that is some 6000 miles away, from the murky
:01:34. > :01:42.Manchester, Rio, where this heroes Parade, really began. Brazil
:01:43. > :01:46.welcomes the world. But just two would be lining up
:01:47. > :01:50.beside them after months of claims and revelations of widespread
:01:51. > :01:54.doping? Russia were at the Olympics, their track and field team were not.
:01:55. > :02:00.But as they say in sport you can only beat what is in front of you.
:02:01. > :02:03.Team GB, at times, were beating everybody.
:02:04. > :02:06.Adam Peaty takes Olympic call for Great Britain.
:02:07. > :02:11.In the pool, the best British games for over a century. Above the waves
:02:12. > :02:17.around the base, roaming in Rio was truly spectacular. And it is Great
:02:18. > :02:20.Britain who are men's Olympic champions. It is carnival time for
:02:21. > :02:24.Great Britain. History being written and then
:02:25. > :02:28.rewritten. These were tales of triumph, passion, Britain confound
:02:29. > :02:33.its golden touch. All games need their superstars, we had plenty.
:02:34. > :02:37.Some catapulted themselves onto the biggest stage. For others, a final
:02:38. > :02:44.flourish before a fond farewell. There were those that arrived as
:02:45. > :02:48.superstars, Levi's legend. He is going what he always does, it is
:02:49. > :02:57.called again. The triple trouble. The greatest ever. Andy Murray. A
:02:58. > :03:01.double Olympic gold medallist. Some were making history. Some were
:03:02. > :03:06.doing what no Brit had done before. Some award no one had done, for a
:03:07. > :03:10.very long time. Justin Rose of Great Britain takes Olympic gold. Whilst
:03:11. > :03:16.others, well, they were just doing what they have always done. Mo Farah
:03:17. > :03:22.has gone, he is away, he is going to get gold for Great Britain again.
:03:23. > :03:26.The double double. Arise Sir Mo Farah. But amidst such company even
:03:27. > :03:32.giving everything might not be enough. At times it was... Trust.
:03:33. > :03:37.That is the golden goal. Great Britain, they have won the Olympic
:03:38. > :03:43.gold medal. Marvellous moments in the marvellous city, and that was
:03:44. > :03:50.before the Paralympics arrived. When they did, those special moments just
:03:51. > :03:56.kept on coming. 147 medals for Paralympics GB, 64 of them gold.
:03:57. > :03:59.Again and again expectations were met, and then exceeded. You can see
:04:00. > :04:04.a detailed review of all the Rio games on the BBC News channel over
:04:05. > :04:07.the festive period. So many extraordinary achievements on which
:04:08. > :04:15.to look back and enjoy. Thank you, Rio. Few people could have predicted
:04:16. > :04:20.the scale of the success for Great Britain in Rio, but then perhaps
:04:21. > :04:23.2016 was the year of unexpected triumphs. And there were no bigger
:04:24. > :04:34.shocks anywhere than in the Premier League.
:04:35. > :04:45.In the beginning I felt something special of -- but of course I could
:04:46. > :04:49.never have imagined this. There were no odds I would have taken. 10
:04:50. > :04:56.million to one, I would have thought, no, it is just wasting ?1.
:04:57. > :05:01.It is impossible. In January, February... The more
:05:02. > :05:08.that the games past, we started to believe, maybe, you know?
:05:09. > :05:11.We are in the Champions League, man! Come on! There's only one chance in
:05:12. > :05:19.life. This is our chance. The title has
:05:20. > :05:28.gone for Tottenham. Claudio Ranieri, wins the Premier League, Leicester
:05:29. > :05:37.City are the champions of England. Seeing my team do this it has been
:05:38. > :05:42.amazing. We've done it! This is a team of players where they
:05:43. > :05:47.have been plucked from other clubs, free transfers, it is just the most
:05:48. > :05:53.incredible achievement, I believe, in British sport.
:05:54. > :05:58.I cannot get my head around it. I think it is genuinely the biggest
:05:59. > :06:05.sporting shock in... Probably all sport. I cannot think of anything
:06:06. > :06:11.that surpasses it in team sports. And it means I have to wear my pants
:06:12. > :06:12.presenting much of the dates? The fans are dreaming. Keep dreaming.
:06:13. > :06:30.Why wake up? A repeat of that season was always a
:06:31. > :06:33.lot to ask but they did continue the journey into the Champions League.
:06:34. > :06:38.There were hopes of another upset in the FA Cup, Crystal Palace went
:06:39. > :06:44.ahead, but their joy would not last. A rare moment of triumph for Louis
:06:45. > :06:49.Van Gaal is his reign came to a rather inevitable end. The League
:06:50. > :06:53.Cup went to Manchester also, city defeating Liverpool on penalties,
:06:54. > :06:56.the Reds were also defeated in the Europa League final. Manchester
:06:57. > :07:00.clubs dominated the domestic cup competitions, the woman also did
:07:01. > :07:03.their bit, Manchester City winning the Continental cup in the woman's
:07:04. > :07:08.super league. A more established name and the FA Cup. Arsenal ladies
:07:09. > :07:14.winning for a 14th time in front of a record crowd. In Scotland, Celtic
:07:15. > :07:26.were champions again. With Glasgow city dominant in the women's game,
:07:27. > :07:36.and at Hampden Park, the long wait for a Scottish Cup ended for Hibs.
:07:37. > :07:42.And Celtic, League Cup champions, after it was awarded for a second
:07:43. > :07:46.time in 2016. But for the other home nations, well, plenty of tales to
:07:47. > :07:49.tell from their summer holidays. With Wales, Northern Ireland, and
:07:50. > :07:53.England, all making it to the European Championship in France,
:07:54. > :07:56.hopes were high for a summer to remember. But at times those
:07:57. > :08:03.memories were threatened with being tarnished, violent England fans a
:08:04. > :08:08.worrying reminder of tournaments gone by. On the pitch,
:08:09. > :08:13.disappointingly it was the same story. A late Russian equaliser in
:08:14. > :08:19.Marseille set the tone for another tournament to forget. A horrible end
:08:20. > :08:23.to the night. But whilst they were underachieving, Northern Ireland and
:08:24. > :08:28.Wales, well, they were far exceeding expectations. 2-0, Niall McGinn! For
:08:29. > :08:38.those, it was a first European Championship. Even a late, late
:08:39. > :08:43.defeat against England could not stop the Wales journey. Air a high
:08:44. > :08:51.note for England, but it was Wales who carried on the song. Ramsey,
:08:52. > :08:57.on-site, Aaron Ramsey with a chip, and Wales have the lead! Ramsey, we
:08:58. > :09:05.think it through to Gareth Bale, he is onside, surely this time... Wales
:09:06. > :09:11.3-0 Russia. That is what it means to the fans. Look at them. In Paris
:09:12. > :09:16.they would meet Northern Ireland. What a moment for everybody
:09:17. > :09:19.involved. Only one team could progress, a heartbreaking end for my
:09:20. > :09:26.colonial's team, in particular, Gareth McAuley. Another Welsh win,
:09:27. > :09:28.and they go to the quarterfinals. With the Northern Ireland Truman
:09:29. > :09:34.over they left with plenty of credit and plenty of new friends. If only
:09:35. > :09:38.the same could be said for England. Ahead against one of the
:09:39. > :09:45.tournament's big surprises, Iceland, it did not last. Iceland have turned
:09:46. > :09:50.it round, they lead. Defeat was as humbling and humiliating as anything
:09:51. > :09:54.in living memory. There is disbelief right around the ground. From
:09:55. > :09:59.England fans, and Iceland supporters. The England manager, Roy
:10:00. > :10:03.Hodgson, has resigned in the past few minutes... Now was the time for
:10:04. > :10:06.somebody else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry,
:10:07. > :10:11.extremely talented group. So it was left to Wales to fly the
:10:12. > :10:14.flag for the home nations, a quarterfinal against Belgium,
:10:15. > :10:20.perhaps the most magnificent night in their football history. Williams!
:10:21. > :10:26.Towards Robson Carnot. Taylor is available. What a touring, and a
:10:27. > :10:31.goal. Go and wake your kids up. Something special is happening here
:10:32. > :10:37.tonight. Wales are going into the semifinal! Portugal were waiting.
:10:38. > :10:39.For most fans, even beyond their wildest dreams, passion,
:10:40. > :10:43.determination, and the desire, had carried them further than anybody
:10:44. > :10:47.thought possible, but even all that just was not quite enough. It is all
:10:48. > :10:54.over for Wales. It will be Portugal in the final on Sunday. Welcome to
:10:55. > :11:01.the end of the month long party. Too upset that fringe party, Portugal
:11:02. > :11:05.took the time. 109 minutes, to be precise. But the wait for a first
:11:06. > :11:18.major tournament win was over. The stadium is stunned. Kings of Europe.
:11:19. > :11:24.Portugal. Back home, for Wales, hopes that this now might begin a
:11:25. > :11:30.new era of success. Wales came to the airport and I got my shoe and my
:11:31. > :11:35.book signed. For England, a new era also. But there would be no success.
:11:36. > :11:38.Tonight at ten, a significant error of judgment means that Sam Allardyce
:11:39. > :11:43.is no longer the England football manager. He had been in the job for
:11:44. > :11:47.just two months. The FA has terminated its contract with
:11:48. > :11:51.immediate effect... So in came Gareth Southgate, the third manager
:11:52. > :11:58.in as many matches for England. And as the football Association
:11:59. > :12:02.continued to recover, above them, Fifa we trying to start afresh with
:12:03. > :12:08.a new man in charge of rescuing the damaged reputation of the
:12:09. > :12:13.organisation. Danny Willett was not even supposed
:12:14. > :12:17.to be at the US Masters, let alone win it, but the early arrival of his
:12:18. > :12:21.baby son are looking to take part. His round finished, he watched on
:12:22. > :12:25.from the courthouse as a Jordan Spieth collapsed. A quick call to
:12:26. > :12:30.tell his new family that he would be bringing home a very special
:12:31. > :12:36.souvenir. The 2016 US Masters champion, Danny Willett... There was
:12:37. > :12:40.a first major winner two at Royal Troon in the Open Championship, an
:12:41. > :12:46.astonishing final round from Henrik Stenson and in the claret jug. In
:12:47. > :12:51.the woman's British Open, we are in Chana Gann became the first major
:12:52. > :12:55.champion from Thailand, in fact this was a year of maiden major winners,
:12:56. > :13:00.Dustin Johnson taking the US open and Jimmy Walker securing the PGA.
:13:01. > :13:04.All this made for one of the most eagerly anticipated Ryder cups in
:13:05. > :13:08.recent memory. Raucous, emotionally charged, as we have come to expect,
:13:09. > :13:15.but, for Europe, they could not quite live up to the expectation, a
:13:16. > :13:19.first US triumph since 2008. 2016 was full of success for sporting
:13:20. > :13:24.great, but that still only one who can lay claim to being the greatest.
:13:25. > :13:29.And this was the year we said goodbye. In June, Dali died at the
:13:30. > :13:36.age of 74. We will not see like again. Boxing owes him a great debt,
:13:37. > :13:40.for British fighters and has been some year. They now have a
:13:41. > :13:44.glittering array of world champions. But Tyson Fury is no longer amongst
:13:45. > :13:52.them, his battles outside of the Ring continue. In Formula One, Lewis
:13:53. > :13:57.Hamilton was the defending champion, with his eyes and a fourth world
:13:58. > :14:02.title. The season began in Melbourne, and he quickly realise
:14:03. > :14:06.retaining that crown would not be easy. Victory for team-mate, Nico
:14:07. > :14:10.Rosberg, in the opening race, Hamilton second, the town set for
:14:11. > :14:14.the season. By the time they reach Barcelona the lead of Rosberg was 43
:14:15. > :14:18.points, on the track they too would be much closer. A crash on that one
:14:19. > :14:22.open the door for Max Mushtaq tapping, Formula One's youngest ever
:14:23. > :14:40.race winner. At Silverstone Hamilton was out on his own, leading from
:14:41. > :14:44.start to finish, now just one point separated the pair. But in Malaysia
:14:45. > :14:47.Hamilton's hopes appeared to go up in smoke. So down to the jewel in
:14:48. > :14:49.the desert in Abu Dhabi. Victory for Hamilton, but it was not enough to
:14:50. > :14:51.stop Nico Rosberg winning his first world title. It came just days
:14:52. > :14:54.before his shock retirement. The year in rugby union began as
:14:55. > :14:56.always with a bang, in the six Nations tournament, and whilst all
:14:57. > :15:01.teams had their moments, the story of success was built here at the
:15:02. > :15:05.home of English rugby. They had been, a site in crisis, but a new
:15:06. > :15:08.coach, a new captain, and suddenly they were looking like a new team,
:15:09. > :15:32.and in this tournament, nobody could compete.
:15:33. > :16:32.A glorious Grand Slam one on foreign shores but built in England. Fowler,
:16:33. > :16:35.just the beginning, they had to go to the other side of the world to
:16:36. > :16:42.see just how far they had come. A 3-0 whitewash of Australia and again
:16:43. > :16:46.the rugby world was taking note, fittingly, it was back at
:16:47. > :16:50.Twickenham, against Austria, that England completed the flawless year.
:16:51. > :16:53.They have beaten everybody put before them. In the woman six
:16:54. > :16:57.Nations, France were crowned champions. Whilst in the club game
:16:58. > :17:00.Saracens were all conquering, premiership and Champions Cup
:17:01. > :17:08.winners, core triumphing in the pro 12. Welcome to Wembley Stadium for
:17:09. > :17:12.one of the showpiece events of the sporting summer. In rugby league
:17:13. > :17:17.2016 was a year history making achievement and heartbreaking near
:17:18. > :17:21.misses. Alessi had famously never won at Wembley, ahead, just, against
:17:22. > :17:32.Warrington, but they managed to cling on, as the Wolves agonisingly
:17:33. > :17:36.it slip. Listen to the noise. The black-and-white. Warrington did win
:17:37. > :17:41.the league shield, when it really mattered, at the grand final, again,
:17:42. > :17:47.they fell short. Just, C, Wigan are the super league champions. The four
:17:48. > :17:50.nations then was there an opportunity to test British rugby
:17:51. > :17:54.league against the game down under, for Scotland, the progress continues
:17:55. > :18:00.apace. A draw with New Zealand, their greatest ever result. For
:18:01. > :18:04.England, disappointment. Defeat to the Kiwis and then eventual winners
:18:05. > :18:08.Australia shows the northern hemisphere is still some way behind.
:18:09. > :18:13.England's hearts are being ripped out.
:18:14. > :18:17.For England's cricketers, an eventful year. An historic series
:18:18. > :18:20.win over South Africa, and then against Sri Lanka, captain, Alastair
:18:21. > :18:28.Cook, became the youngest batsman ever to 10,000 test runs. Series
:18:29. > :18:32.against Pakistan, Bangladesh, and I, were rather less successful, but the
:18:33. > :18:37.real heartbreak came at the world T20, all the way to the final,
:18:38. > :18:42.before falling final hurdle. Victory battered from their grasp, Carlos
:18:43. > :18:44.Brathwaite and the West Indies, uncontrollable, Ben Stokes and
:18:45. > :18:48.England, inconsolable. It was a double for the West Indies as they
:18:49. > :18:51.claimed the women's title as well. Drama only rivalled by the end of
:18:52. > :18:57.the County Championship season. Middlesex, winners, and one of the
:18:58. > :19:03.tightest finishes in years. So much of sport is about getting across the
:19:04. > :19:07.line first. 33/1 shot rule the world lived up to his name, winning the
:19:08. > :19:11.Grand National. On-board was teenager, David Mullings, proving
:19:12. > :19:15.that even on his 169 running, this great rate is still a couple of
:19:16. > :19:20.fairy tales. There are others for whom crossing that line first is now
:19:21. > :19:24.a familiar feeling. A third to de France title for Chris Froome, it
:19:25. > :19:43.feels amazing, I mean, it really could be the first one all
:19:44. > :19:47.over it is just such a special, it is a combination of months of hard
:19:48. > :19:49.work, of Almighty made, all the support of the team, and what it
:19:50. > :19:52.symbolises, standing in this final podium, on the Shamsul user here in
:19:53. > :19:54.Paris, it is just,... It is monumental, such an amazing feeling.
:19:55. > :19:57.But being the first to cross the line is not always everything.
:19:58. > :19:59.Getting to the finish can be a triumph also. 2016 was the year of
:20:00. > :20:01.the 1,000,000th finisher of the London Marathon. Just a little
:20:02. > :20:03.behind Jim Imus Omron, and Elliot Chaudhry, who missed the world
:20:04. > :20:06.record by an agonising seven seconds. Getting to the end, just,
:20:07. > :20:11.was Johnny Brownlee. The heat of Cozumel taking its toll, even on one
:20:12. > :20:20.of sport's very best. Being helped toward the line by his brother,
:20:21. > :20:22.Alistair, one of the defining images of the. Second place, and second
:20:23. > :20:26.place overall in the world triathlon series. But there are some who won't
:20:27. > :20:30.mind being put to the line. Just 13 minutes after Leicester City won the
:20:31. > :20:34.Premier League, another of the city's sons, Mark Selby, became the
:20:35. > :20:41.World Snooker champion. Quite a double celebration.
:20:42. > :20:46.Even in this crowded year of sport of this corner of South West London
:20:47. > :20:51.remains centrestage, for two summer weeks at least, there history is
:20:52. > :20:55.rich in glory and triumph, still, for the British, Wimbledon had
:20:56. > :21:00.remained, for that one, something just to watch and admire. More
:21:01. > :21:06.recently, and in 2016 in particular, there was so much here to celebrate.
:21:07. > :21:10.The crowds stayed always come, and now with a little added expectation,
:21:11. > :21:48.to go with all that hope. Having lost the Australian
:21:49. > :21:52.Vienna French Open finals, Andy Murray was again the flag bearer for
:21:53. > :21:55.British tennis, but these days he is not quite alone. The Brodie on the
:21:56. > :21:57.other side of the net, and the all British VAT and the round one, the
:21:58. > :22:00.signs are encouraging is the result was. And it is a welcome back to
:22:01. > :22:02.this FW 19th for Andy Murray, straight sets. For Murray there
:22:03. > :22:05.would be tougher times ahead, not in round two. For a moment, it looked
:22:06. > :22:08.like he was in trouble, but it was only a moment. A tour de force from
:22:09. > :22:10.Andy Murray. John Millman, flawed in straight sets, Murray, through to
:22:11. > :22:13.but something far less familiar was happening on Court one. There will
:22:14. > :22:16.be no Novak Djokovic in week two at Wimbledon. There was no way chance
:22:17. > :22:18.for Andy Murray. All he had to do was take it. Against Nick curiosity
:22:19. > :22:21.that is exactly what he did. Ruthless, clinical, and he is a
:22:22. > :22:23.quarterfinalist yet again. But if you was making things look simple,
:22:24. > :22:26.the quarterfinal, against a Jo Wilfred Tsonga, was anything there
:22:27. > :22:29.will be no Novak Djokovic in week two at Wimbledon. There was now a
:22:30. > :22:31.chance for Andy Murray. All he had to do was take it. Against Nick
:22:32. > :22:34.curiosity that is exactly what he did. Ruthless, clinical, and he is a
:22:35. > :22:36.quarterfinalist yet again. But if you was making things look simple,
:22:37. > :22:38.the quarterfinal, against Jo Wilfred Tsonga, was anything arms raised
:22:39. > :22:42.aloft, another triumph on centre. A five set marathon. Thomas Berdych in
:22:43. > :22:48.the semifinal proved little obstacle. Andy Murray in straight
:22:49. > :22:53.sets, a demolition job, really. That is Sunday afternoon taking care of.
:22:54. > :22:57.The men's singles final is between Mule is Routledge Canada and Andy
:22:58. > :22:59.Murray of Thomas Berdych in the semifinal proved little obstacle.
:23:00. > :23:01.Andy Murray in straight sets, a demolition job, really. That is
:23:02. > :23:03.Sunday afternoon taking care of. The men's singles final is between meal
