0:00:02 > 0:00:05Oh, I'm just pottering among the plants for this week's garden theme,

0:00:05 > 0:00:07because our potters are going to be at one with pots

0:00:07 > 0:00:10for the great outdoors. We've just got seven potters left now,

0:00:10 > 0:00:14so who's going to emerge as the budding star and who, sadly,

0:00:14 > 0:00:18is going to be pruned and sent packing from the pottery?

0:00:18 > 0:00:23Last time, the potters tried their hand at the Japanese art of raku...

0:00:23 > 0:00:24Oh, no!

0:00:26 > 0:00:30Nam came through in a blaze of glory, winning Pot Of The Week.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33It just looks like true alchemy - it's brilliant.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36- James crashed, burned... - Please work!

0:00:36 > 0:00:38..and left the pottery.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Sad to go. Yeah, man, pleased with what I did.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42- This week...- So good.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44..it's all about the garden.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47Roses are red, your face is too - a little bit.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50There's a flowerpot flinging Throw Down...

0:00:50 > 0:00:52I'm kind of getting a bit excited.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53Are you?

0:00:53 > 0:00:56..a rather romantic spot test...

0:00:56 > 0:00:57Making them for you, Sara.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59I HATE a fuss, shut up!

0:00:59 > 0:01:02And as they tackle their biggest throwing challenge so far...

0:01:02 > 0:01:05Go on, Elaine! Get them guns out, Elaine.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07..there's carnage in the kiln.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10This is probably the most catastrophic shelf.

0:01:10 > 0:01:11Aw, no.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14I could do with a pint.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21# Makin' time

0:01:23 > 0:01:25# Shootin' lines

0:01:26 > 0:01:28# People have their uses

0:01:30 > 0:01:32# People have their uses. #

0:01:45 > 0:01:49The potters are back to face a whole new set of challenges.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Even though it's the fourth week, the nerves are just horrendous.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58One win underneath my belt, and hopefully I can get a few more.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00I've never made a garden sculpture,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03but I'm going to push myself and throw something really big.

0:02:03 > 0:02:08This week is garden week, I'm completely, 110% inspired,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11you can see the ones who are out to win it.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13'Blood may flow on this one.'

0:02:13 > 0:02:17So, it looks like the garden gloves are off and the game is on.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Good morning, potters, welcome back to the pottery.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Now, today, we are going to be making

0:02:28 > 0:02:30the great outdoors even greater.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32Cos for your Main Make challenge,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Kate and Keith would like you to build a water feature.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37You're going to be making it out of stoneware clay,

0:02:37 > 0:02:41cos it's got to go outdoors, and it must be at least two tiers tall.

0:02:41 > 0:02:42For this challenge you'll be using

0:02:42 > 0:02:46the largest amount of clay that you've used so far.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49All your pieces have to be hand thrown at the wheel,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52and that's including the tiers and supports.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54And it has to fit this pump and this hosepipe.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Did you just whip that out your handbag, Kate?

0:02:57 > 0:02:58Where did that come from?!

0:02:58 > 0:03:02You have got three hours so, potters, get potting.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06No problem, three hours, no bother.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10Working with such massive amounts of clay...

0:03:10 > 0:03:12Go large or go home.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14..is going to take real skill at the wheel.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18Are you throwing something already, Ryan? You're making me nervous.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Elaine, I don't know how you're going to centre a whole bag of clay.

0:03:21 > 0:03:22Oh, dear, don't anybody watch.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25I'm struggling with THIS! Go on, Elaine.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Get them guns out, Elaine, get them guns out.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29You can do it. Give it some!

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Stop looking!

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Right, you bad boy.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39So, we've asked the potters to raise their level this week, haven't we?

0:03:39 > 0:03:42They really have to think how the water is going to flow through their

0:03:42 > 0:03:47piece. That main base bowl has to be wide enough not only to physically

0:03:47 > 0:03:51hold the water but also it's got to be big enough to catch the water

0:03:51 > 0:03:53from the tiers above.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56They've really got to consider how they fit together, how they stand,

0:03:56 > 0:03:58and how stable it is.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00And they have to be robust enough and look beautiful

0:04:00 > 0:04:03with this water cascading down them.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06It's very calming, isn't it, standing next to these?

0:04:06 > 0:04:09I don't think the potters are that calm!

0:04:11 > 0:04:14The potters have just three hours to throw and shape each individual

0:04:14 > 0:04:16element of their water feature.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19That one's got three tiers in that drawing, but I'm hoping to do

0:04:19 > 0:04:23a couple more. It's just bowl, bowl, bowl, stilt, stilt, stilt.

0:04:24 > 0:04:25Simple.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28I'm starting with the bowl at the bottom,

0:04:28 > 0:04:31cos that then sets the size for everything that then goes inside.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34The bottom bowl is the toughest to throw.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36I don't think I've ever thrown something as big as this.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40To catch the spray and support the rest of the structure,

0:04:40 > 0:04:41these babies have got to be big.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45I love throwing these big shapes, I love it, I really enjoy this.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49I have never thrown a bowl this big before. I've always wanted to.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52I think it's one of my ambitions in life, to throw big.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Elaine's water feature is based on the splendid Brighton Pavilion.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58It has an ornate minaret top over a stately column,

0:04:58 > 0:05:01but it's not just for ornamental use.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03We have seven cats and two dogs.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06They love drinking out of anything - they'll drink out of the tap,

0:05:06 > 0:05:10if it is dripping. I thought, a nice little fountain, they'll go in that.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13- Very nice.- The water is travelling up from the bottom bowl

0:05:13 > 0:05:15and coming out in how many points?

0:05:15 > 0:05:20I'm hoping it's going to come out from the bottom of the sphere.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23There will be holes going in the side of the sphere around,

0:05:23 > 0:05:28so it just gently flows over the collar of the sphere, and down.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30So it's not coming out of the top of the sphere?

0:05:30 > 0:05:32- No.- Think that's quite sensible.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36- Less Freudian.- No, absolutely, I wanted a gentle flow,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39and then I'm really going to go for it on the decoration.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Nice to hear that.

0:05:42 > 0:05:43I'm going to try. I'll try my best.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45- We'll leave you to it.- Thank you.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49Clover's hoping HER fountain will be at one with nature.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51Lotus is going to be the theme of my design.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54I did some sketching there, and there's one from my painting there.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56It's a flower that grows in the water

0:05:56 > 0:06:00and is really common where I come from in China.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04The lotus is the centrepiece for Clover's two-tiered design.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Supporting it is a bulb shape to house the water pump.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11To catch the spray, she needs a really wide bottom bowl.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14The thing you're looking at is the biggest thing I've ever thrown,

0:06:14 > 0:06:17so hopefully from here on, it's going to be a little bit easier.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19But I don't know.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23I don't even want to know what the time is.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26Most of the big bowls are complete and ready to dry, but Nam's

0:06:26 > 0:06:28first attempt is just a warm-up exercise.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30I made a quick sample of the bowl.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32I'm going to make a bigger one in a bit.

0:06:34 > 0:06:35Elaine's bowl is huge.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39Really impressive. Freya's looks really nice and curvy.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41True to form, Freya is going for

0:06:41 > 0:06:43an unconventional and time-consuming design.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47I'm just using my fingertips and pushing it from the inside,

0:06:47 > 0:06:50and then using a rubber kidney to press it back here.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53You know what, I'm going to spend so long on this first bowl,

0:06:53 > 0:06:54I'm not going to get anything else done.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58Freya's going for four tiers of organically shaped bowls

0:06:58 > 0:07:00inspired by her love of fruit.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04When I went to Guyana, me and my sister were eating fruit every day,

0:07:04 > 0:07:07and everything was really ripe and succulent.

0:07:07 > 0:07:08I've just always really liked fruit.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14I've made bigger individual items, but not anything as big as this

0:07:14 > 0:07:17when it comes to putting it all together.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20History buff Richard is also planning to incorporate his theme

0:07:20 > 0:07:25into the surface of the clay, which he is forming into an Aztec temple.

0:07:25 > 0:07:30- This is nice.- I've made quite a few stamps of the Aztec animals.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33So you're going to press these into the surfaces?

0:07:33 > 0:07:36- Gorgeous.- What's your design? Is the sphere at the bottom, middle, top?

0:07:36 > 0:07:38The sphere is at the top.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41It's going to represent the Aztec god of pottery.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43Is there an actual Aztec god of pottery?

0:07:43 > 0:07:45- Yes.- Has he got a name?

0:07:45 > 0:07:47I can't pronounce it. I have tried...

0:07:47 > 0:07:48- Is it Clive?- It could be Clive.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52I think it is Clive. So, Clive, our newly named Aztec god,

0:07:52 > 0:07:55will sit on top of three highly decorated tiers,

0:07:55 > 0:07:57and no Aztec temple would be complete

0:07:57 > 0:07:59without a nod to human sacrifice.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03I shall put a bit of food colouring into the water to make it

0:08:03 > 0:08:06nice and red, so it's like blood flowing over the Aztec temple.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09I love it when you're pumped-up like this, Richard, it's great.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12- It's good to see.- And I've got you a present, Sara.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15As it was water feature, I thought...

0:08:15 > 0:08:18- It's a shower cap.- Is it going to be such a big moment when the water...?

0:08:18 > 0:08:20It could be. You never know.

0:08:21 > 0:08:22Very good.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26- I'll leave you to it. - I'll walk away with dignity.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29# Well, it's water, water everywhere And not a drop... #

0:08:29 > 0:08:33Not only do the fountains need an eye-catching design,

0:08:33 > 0:08:35they must be structurally sound.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39Struggling to make it wide and tall. It's a bit wobbly.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42I think you need to be an engineer AND a potter.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44They also need to have an understanding

0:08:44 > 0:08:47of how to use the sculpture to guide the water as it falls.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50So this is the middle tiers, water will drip from the top,

0:08:50 > 0:08:54and then I've just pulled from all these angles.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57My idea is to break up and control the water flow,

0:08:57 > 0:08:59so I'm going to do these discs and then pierce them

0:08:59 > 0:09:02in different sections, so the water is going to hit the disc,

0:09:02 > 0:09:03fill up and then go through a hole.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Ambitious Ryan is going for more tiers than anybody else,

0:09:06 > 0:09:10using a stack of seven discs for the water to flow through,

0:09:10 > 0:09:15before hitting a large sphere decorated with rings of clay.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18They're like doughnuts that will be stuck onto the main sphere

0:09:18 > 0:09:22but they are going to be quite deep, so water can get trapped in each

0:09:22 > 0:09:26disc itself, so it'll be like little pockets of water, on the sphere.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Hopefully.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32This is really nice. Cos we get to stack and layer and form

0:09:32 > 0:09:35different shapes on top of each other. I don't get to do that much.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39But it's also a bit scary in that sense of, it's the unknown.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Nam's piece will feature three-dimensional tentacles,

0:09:42 > 0:09:45and the main structure will be made up of three balancing globes,

0:09:45 > 0:09:48so you could say Nam's using SPHERES FOR TIERS -

0:09:48 > 0:09:50I think I've got their album, somewhere.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52These drawings are absolutely gorgeous.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55Is this kind of part of the design you want to put on the piece?

0:09:55 > 0:09:57There will be tentacles coming out my forms,

0:09:57 > 0:10:00and creatures trying to get out, somehow.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02If it turns out half as good as the drawings, I think you'll be

0:10:02 > 0:10:03all right, that looks great.

0:10:03 > 0:10:09My inspiration has been our former family dog, who was called Reuben.

0:10:09 > 0:10:14He was a real character, but sadly had to be put down at New Year.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Aw, I don't want to start crying.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18A few months ago, my mum asked me

0:10:18 > 0:10:21if I could use some of his ashes and make a pot.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23This is for Reuben, and my mum.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Cait's doggy nose will form the top of her fountain -

0:10:26 > 0:10:29the main part represents a mountain with a stream at the bottom because

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Reuben was a mountain dog.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Hey, Cait. How you doing?

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Sorry.

0:10:39 > 0:10:40I need to stop crying.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44Oh, sweetheart. I totally get it.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46My old dog's ashes are in the pantry at home

0:10:46 > 0:10:51next to all the breakfast cereal! That's where his biscuits were,

0:10:51 > 0:10:53- and I think that's where...- He'd like to be.- He was always trying

0:10:53 > 0:10:55to get into the pantry and now he's there.

0:10:55 > 0:11:00In a bid for perfection, Nam has now thrown three bowls.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03The biggest challenge is to get everything to fit.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06I hope they've got their geometry right.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08That's 35.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11Elaine is such a perfectionist, I'm sure she's got it spot on, really.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Two nines are 18.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17- 18 from 35...- 17.

0:11:17 > 0:11:18Thank you.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21In this challenge, if their calculations are out,

0:11:21 > 0:11:23they could be, too.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32The supporting columns will house the pump and water pipes,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35as well as adding height and drama to the fountains.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37- How you getting on?- Really behind, actually.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41- Are you?- I haven't got something to fit the pump yet.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44OK, potters, I don't want to make a FOUNTAIN out of a molehill...

0:11:44 > 0:11:47- Boo!- ..but you have only got 30 minutes left.

0:11:49 > 0:11:50Lots of things to do still.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52It's a bit of a speed rush.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54I need to get these babies done quick and fast.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57There's a lot of components I need to start making.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59I can't stop measuring!

0:12:05 > 0:12:06Oops!

0:12:09 > 0:12:11Oh, there's a bubble in the top...

0:12:11 > 0:12:15With time slipping away, Nam's not happy with his tentacles.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Looks a bit too phallic for my liking.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27Potters, you've got five minutes left.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30All your stuff needs to get in the drying room, please.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32Time waits for no man.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39They actually look all right.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42- I know they look all right! - These are like penises!

0:12:42 > 0:12:44Get out of here!

0:12:44 > 0:12:46One minute left, potters, one minute left.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49Anything you want to get in the drying room needs to go now.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55OK, potters, ten, nine, eight,

0:12:55 > 0:12:58seven, six, five, four,

0:12:58 > 0:13:01three, two,

0:13:01 > 0:13:03one. Time is up.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05Come out of the drying room, please.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Potters, you've worked really hard this morning, well done.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10You can go and get a breath of fresh air,

0:13:10 > 0:13:13we'll see you back here shortly for the Throw Down.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22I have never had to measure anything before.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Being in the pottery has made me do this.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27It's ruined me for life.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30I did notice that everyone was doing giant pots, or amazing pieces,

0:13:30 > 0:13:32so I upped my game by throwing extra pieces,

0:13:32 > 0:13:35just in case something went wrong or I can figure out a new design.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38I hope I made the bowl big enough to fit the pump.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40If it doesn't work, I'm going home.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44I am fairly confident what I've done is calculated right

0:13:44 > 0:13:47but until we get them all put together,

0:13:47 > 0:13:49could be tears before bedtime.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Once their work has dried,

0:13:51 > 0:13:55the potters will have an opportunity to turn and trim before firing, but

0:13:55 > 0:13:59first, the judges have another challenge for them, the Throw Down.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03Potters, time now for a Throw Down challenge that would make

0:14:03 > 0:14:07Bill and Ben proud. Because you're going to be making flowerpots.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10We need a big one, a medium one, and a small one, OK?

0:14:10 > 0:14:14Master of the wheel here, Keith, as usual, is going to demonstrate.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20So the first one you're going to do is with three pounds of clay.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22So you're going to open up your base,

0:14:22 > 0:14:26and then you're going to put the hole in the middle straightaway.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30We want a nice, straight, tapered side.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37And then you're just going to flip that rim over.

0:14:40 > 0:14:41He's like, "Just flip it over!"

0:14:43 > 0:14:49And the art is, not to get any air trapped inside.

0:14:49 > 0:14:55So, I'm just throwing under that rim, shaping that tapered form.

0:14:55 > 0:14:56You take that off...

0:15:00 > 0:15:04That's the first one. Then your medium one, with six pounds of clay.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Oh, that's the SMALL one? I thought that was the big one.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11I thought it was the big one!

0:15:12 > 0:15:14So good.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19When I flip the rim over, I start at the top and I work my way down,

0:15:19 > 0:15:21so the air has got a chance to escape.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25And you just naturally stop at that rim.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33Now, the largest one is nine pounds.

0:15:33 > 0:15:34Oh, Lord.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38And just take your time, take your time.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42It's mesmerising, I'm going in again here, I'm swaying.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52Hopefully, when I cut that in half...

0:15:53 > 0:15:58..you're left with no air in that rim, and a nice hole at the bottom.

0:15:58 > 0:16:00- Oh, look at that! - That's what we're looking for.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04So, potters, go back to your benches, get behind your wheels.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08You have 15 minutes and your time starts now.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16Golly, it's hard clay.

0:16:17 > 0:16:18Using three pounds of clay,

0:16:18 > 0:16:22the potters start with the smallest of the three flowerpots.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24Don't forget your hole, guys.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32Once they've built the height, they need to tackle the rim.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38Nice and controlled with that rim.

0:16:38 > 0:16:42Just imagine that air escaping as you draw it down.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Really think about that shape and form.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49Richard has got a little wrinkle happening there.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55Elaine's got her rim over.

0:16:58 > 0:17:03Don't forget, you're making a set of three here, so think of that taper.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05Looking good, Freya, looking really good there.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11Nam, one down, excellent work.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13Nam's going for the six-pounder!

0:17:15 > 0:17:16Come on, Nam.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19Halfway through, guys, you're halfway through your time.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21Oh, what?! No!

0:17:24 > 0:17:27- Focus.- Nice and tidy.

0:17:27 > 0:17:28So hard.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33Do the best with what you've got.

0:17:34 > 0:17:39- Keep your cool.- We join Ryan just as he's folding his rim.

0:17:41 > 0:17:42What a sight it is.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44Clover's on her third lump.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49Elaine, you hate this bit of clay,

0:17:49 > 0:17:51you hate it, you're going to centre it.

0:17:51 > 0:17:52Leaving the biggest pot till last...

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Come on.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57..ramps up the pressure, with only seconds to go.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Come on! Come on, girl.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02I'm kind of getting a bit excited.

0:18:02 > 0:18:03Are you?

0:18:05 > 0:18:07One minute.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09Get as far as you can.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Oh, Elaine, get it taller.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17- Get it taller. - Ten, nine, eight,

0:18:17 > 0:18:19seven,

0:18:19 > 0:18:23- six, five, four... - You don't know what to do!

0:18:23 > 0:18:26- ..three, two, one. - Pick it up or pull it out...?

0:18:26 > 0:18:29Stop your wheels, step back from the Throw Down.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Well done, guys, well done.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39- Right, you can all breathe again, now.- Ryan actually looks tired.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45The judges have asked for three flowerpots,

0:18:45 > 0:18:47but it's not just about the quantity.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51Quality is key in this test of the potters' throwing skills.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53- Hello, Clover.- Hello, Kate.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55- Hello.- Hi, Clover. You've got three pots here.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58Obviously, not much of a taper there.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04You've got a thick area that goes to thin, so it's that knuckling and up.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07- If your knuckle's not hurting, you're not doing it right.- Yeah.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13- Hello, Ryan.- Hi, guys. - Nice, flat base there inside.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16I'm just missing a tiny bit of a taper, on both of them, really.

0:19:16 > 0:19:17That's the better of the two.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20See how that rim's folded over.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22Pretty good. Really good.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25I'm really liking the flat base there.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27- Hi, Freya.- Hello.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30The first thing you notice is the size difference, it's great.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32Three pounds, six pounds, nine pounds.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34Obviously, that's not finished.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36But it's looking good, isn't it?

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Pretty good. They're tapered, this one especially.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44- How are we for air? It's good, - isn't it? Bit on the thin side.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47- A tiny bit. A millimetre or two. - Not too bad at all.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Very nice junction in the corner.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52- Really nice.- Well done.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54Hello, Elaine.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56As a set, they're looking really good.

0:19:58 > 0:19:59Nicely turned-over rim.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03- Yeah.- Slightly tapering to thin, just on the base there.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08- Oh!- You've got a bit of air trapped in there, but we know why that is,

0:20:08 > 0:20:09because you ran out of time.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13Nam. Profile's good, isn't it?

0:20:13 > 0:20:15Good straight size, they're tapering.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20No air at all in that. Nice thickness on the base.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23You could have just made the whole thing thinner and further up.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25Cheers, Nam.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31Just a tiny, tiny bit of air there.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33- Oh, yeah.- Oh, yeah, there it is.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35- Not too...- You can open it up, there it is.

0:20:35 > 0:20:39Nice cross-section, though, across the whole wall of the pot.

0:20:39 > 0:20:40Well done, Richard.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44- Hello, Cait.- Hello.- Hi, luvvie.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48- CAIT GIGGLES - Yeah...

0:20:49 > 0:20:52I think the water would drain out of that rather quickly!

0:20:55 > 0:20:57Kate and Keith will now rate the potters' work,

0:20:57 > 0:21:01from worst flowerpots to the blooming best.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03So, in seventh place,

0:21:03 > 0:21:05Cait.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Good try, Cait, that's all I've got to say!

0:21:10 > 0:21:12In sixth place,

0:21:12 > 0:21:13Richard.

0:21:13 > 0:21:18Really nice, small and medium, just way off your large one.

0:21:18 > 0:21:19In fifth place, it's Ryan.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Clover's fourth,

0:21:21 > 0:21:23and Nam is third.

0:21:23 > 0:21:24So, in second place...

0:21:27 > 0:21:32Elaine. Quite nice defined rims, just that third one not quite there,

0:21:32 > 0:21:35- was it?- Oh, yes. - So the winner is Freya.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41Great, Freya. Got the third one up, and it was just fabulous.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43Well thrown.

0:21:43 > 0:21:44'I'm really happy.'

0:21:44 > 0:21:46Yeah!

0:21:46 > 0:21:47Go me!

0:21:48 > 0:21:50Commiserations, my lovely Cait!

0:21:50 > 0:21:53I nearly joined you at the bottom there.

0:21:53 > 0:21:57- Good effort.- It's fine margins now.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59I mean, any one of us can slip.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02- Yeah.- We've worked hard today.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04It was a real pot work-out, wasn't it?

0:22:04 > 0:22:06And they are not finished yet.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09The potters now have 90 minutes to finesse all the elements

0:22:09 > 0:22:14of their water features before they enter kiln for the first time.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16Oh, that's fun!

0:22:16 > 0:22:19By trimming and turning, they can shape their pieces further,

0:22:19 > 0:22:21and get rid of any excess weight

0:22:21 > 0:22:24which could cause the pots to explode in the kiln.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26I'd rather not turn it if I don't have to,

0:22:26 > 0:22:30but I can't take the risk of it wobble when it's being fired.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33I'll do a little bit of turning and trimming as I go along,

0:22:33 > 0:22:36just to make sure the pieces fit in together.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38But the bowl is absolutely fine.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41It really is a feat of engineering.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44They really need to think about all the holes for the hosing.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46And they really need to think about shrinkage,

0:22:46 > 0:22:48making sure that water pump fits.

0:22:48 > 0:22:49It may LOOK beautiful,

0:22:49 > 0:22:52but if that water doesn't flow round it properly,

0:22:52 > 0:22:54I'm not interested.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56This column fits in this base,

0:22:56 > 0:22:58and the pump sits inside here.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02And then the next column has got to fit into that bowl

0:23:02 > 0:23:03and slot into that.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05And that has to slot into that.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08OK, got it, Elaine. Easy-peasy.

0:23:08 > 0:23:09Or is it?

0:23:09 > 0:23:12There's the base, it goes in there.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15And the wire goes...through there and through there.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19So basically, the water flowing off here

0:23:19 > 0:23:20is never going to land in there.

0:23:20 > 0:23:26So I need to try and flare this out, or try and get this bit in a bit,

0:23:26 > 0:23:27so that that bowl...

0:23:27 > 0:23:29No, but that's still not going to work.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32Clover's got a similar problem.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34But she's thought of a solution.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38Put this on, where the water's going to go, outside of the bowl.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41- So how are you going to fix that? - Well, cut it.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43But you've got to cut it beautifully, yeah?

0:23:43 > 0:23:46The clock's ticking. I know you know that, so just focus.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49As well as getting their technical detail spot-on,

0:23:49 > 0:23:53some of the potters are embellishing their designs.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56I'm putting my tentacle on. Not a line I use every day!

0:23:56 > 0:23:59But I'm looking forward to adding everything together and seeing

0:23:59 > 0:24:00how it looks, cos I'm so excited.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03I'm panicking a little. This is the first time I've panicked.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07- Why are you panicking?- Because I want to put the decoration on it.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09All of these straight pieces, it's not very interesting.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11It needs to have that wow factor.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14- Good luck.- Thank you, I'm going to need it.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Ryan's design is the most ambitious.

0:24:18 > 0:24:23His water sculpture has over seven tiers and many different sections.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25I made a lot of pieces so I can literally kind of sculpture,

0:24:25 > 0:24:28play around with these ideas. I wasn't sure that I was going to cut

0:24:28 > 0:24:31these in half, but I think it's going to catch the water,

0:24:31 > 0:24:35it's like a little shape. It just feels like rush, rush, rush.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39Ryan, he's got pieces in the drying room, he's got pieces on the floor.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41He's still attaching.

0:24:41 > 0:24:42Just flat-out, I've got a lot to do.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45I always try and push myself as much as possible.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47But I think I maybe pushed myself a bit too much.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50Richard's cunning plan to press Aztec symbols

0:24:50 > 0:24:54onto his three-tier design are, well, not quite going to plan.

0:24:54 > 0:24:55Because the clay is hard,

0:24:55 > 0:24:58the stamps aren't leaving a very good impression, but...

0:24:59 > 0:25:01..we will persevere.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04No plan B, I'm afraid, this is it.

0:25:04 > 0:25:08Potters, you're halfway through your time, you have 45 minutes remaining.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11- It's crazy.- Not enough time.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14You know, you're going to rush a bit now, so stay focused.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Focus, focus.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18Yeah, one, two, three and turn it that way.

0:25:20 > 0:25:21- Go easy!- One, two, three.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25Oh, my word, that looks beautiful!

0:25:25 > 0:25:27That's like a proper fountain.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29- Where do I put it?- Look at Nam.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32I mean, what a great design, to throw those flat discs,

0:25:32 > 0:25:34cos they are already circular.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38- It's brilliant.- I'm trying to gather my water so it follows the circle.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41And once it hits the bottom one, it releases out.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43I have to up my game on decoration.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46So just scratching and slipping the little balls,

0:25:46 > 0:25:49otherwise they might possibly drop off.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52And we don't want my balls dropping off, do we?!

0:25:52 > 0:25:54Potters, you have ten minutes left.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56- Flipping heck!- We can do it.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06- Freya's...- Oh, my God, it's like the Trevi Fountain!

0:26:08 > 0:26:09It looks like an alien!

0:26:09 > 0:26:11Nothing I planned went right.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13Potters, you have one minute left.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Potters, this is the final minute.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17Oh, moment of truth!

0:26:18 > 0:26:20It's like a ticking time bomb.

0:26:21 > 0:26:22Put the wire in, Clover!

0:26:22 > 0:26:24I haven't got it now.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26Ten, nine,

0:26:26 > 0:26:28eight, seven,

0:26:28 > 0:26:30six, five,

0:26:30 > 0:26:35four, three, two,

0:26:35 > 0:26:37one.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39Time's up!

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Brrr.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44OK, potters, we need to calmly get your pieces, please,

0:26:44 > 0:26:47into the drying room, where Rich will look after them, OK?

0:26:47 > 0:26:49He'll dry your TIERS, as it were.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55I spent a lot of time on decorating.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57I'm not satisfied. It wasn't nice.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00You just don't realise how long it takes.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02I think I probably was a bit too adventurous.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06It needs to be quite impressive, I think.

0:27:06 > 0:27:10Playing it safe in a competition isn't always the best idea.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12After the kiln firing, anything could happen.

0:27:12 > 0:27:15Warping could take place, cracking could take place,

0:27:15 > 0:27:17air bubbles may appear. There's nothing I can do now.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19They're in the hands of the kiln gods.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28The water features are left to dry for 48 hours

0:27:28 > 0:27:29before they are bisque-fired,

0:27:29 > 0:27:33which turns them from raw clay into ceramic.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37It's all part of the routine at a working pottery like Middleport.

0:27:37 > 0:27:42Built in 1888, it has adapted to modern methods of production,

0:27:42 > 0:27:45but the basic process is much the same.

0:27:45 > 0:27:49The first firing was always the moment of truth, and still is.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54After the firing, they have to cool down overnight.

0:27:54 > 0:27:58Then the potters arrive back all rested and raring to go.

0:27:58 > 0:28:02Really up for my challenge today. We get to glaze our water features!

0:28:02 > 0:28:04The whole thing starts to come to life.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07Fingers crossed that there is nothing

0:28:07 > 0:28:09coming out of the kiln broken or in pieces.

0:28:09 > 0:28:13Oh, dear. It looks like we've had some fairly catastrophic explosions.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17I mean, it happens. I've had it happen with my own pots.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20But it's kind of worse when it's somebody else's, really.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24- Morning!- Good morning! - How are we doing?

0:28:24 > 0:28:26All right. I've got a bit of bad news.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28Oh, my God.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31There were a few explosions overnight.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33We've lost a few pieces.

0:28:36 > 0:28:39So as they come out, if you grab them and move them away.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42Grab yourself an area on the tables.

0:28:45 > 0:28:46Oh...

0:28:46 > 0:28:48- Is it mine?- Yeah, that's mine.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51Elaine's main bowl has exploded.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53I think it's just moisture in the base.

0:28:53 > 0:28:56I was worried about the decorating, I don't know why I bothered now!

0:28:56 > 0:29:00And as Rich empties the kiln, Elaine is not alone.

0:29:00 > 0:29:03This is probably the most catastrophic shelf.

0:29:03 > 0:29:04Oh, that's my bit, that's mine.

0:29:04 > 0:29:06Oh, no.

0:29:06 > 0:29:09Nam has also lost his base, and tentacles.

0:29:09 > 0:29:10My main base,

0:29:10 > 0:29:13which had all the features of the tentacles that I wanted on,

0:29:13 > 0:29:16I can't use it now. So I have to replace it with a smoother one.

0:29:16 > 0:29:17Whose is that?

0:29:17 > 0:29:22One of my back-ups. It's less attractive, but it does the job.

0:29:22 > 0:29:23A crack for Richard could be fixed,

0:29:23 > 0:29:27but Clover's base has completely shattered.

0:29:27 > 0:29:28I don't have a base any more.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31It's all smashed into pieces.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34And I don't think I have all the pieces

0:29:34 > 0:29:37to glue them back together, either. So...

0:29:37 > 0:29:39Absolutely.

0:29:40 > 0:29:44Basically, a summary of today, there has been carnage in the kiln.

0:29:44 > 0:29:48And we've got large bowls exploding, taking the pieces next to them.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52That's the beauty of the beast, really. It's the nature of it.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54And that's when you really enjoy this craft,

0:29:54 > 0:29:59because it's got all the risks, and they are really quite low.

0:29:59 > 0:30:01And then it's got the highs that are amazing.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03Right, cracked it!

0:30:03 > 0:30:05THEY CHEER

0:30:08 > 0:30:09Wow!

0:30:12 > 0:30:14Does nobody want this bit?

0:30:16 > 0:30:19Well, I'm having it, then. I'll stick it on the bottom

0:30:19 > 0:30:20of my bowl!

0:30:22 > 0:30:28# I'll keep holding on

0:30:31 > 0:30:34# Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. #

0:30:37 > 0:30:38Well, morning, potters.

0:30:38 > 0:30:42- Morning.- So, in front of you on your benches are your water features.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44Some of them, admittedly,

0:30:44 > 0:30:47in slightly more pieces than you perhaps originally intended.

0:30:47 > 0:30:49Yeah, it happens to all of us.

0:30:49 > 0:30:53When something blows up and your heart's in it, it hurts, doesn't it?

0:30:53 > 0:30:56Think forward, think logically, be creative,

0:30:56 > 0:30:58and that's what you've got to do today.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01You've got two hours to decorate your water features.

0:31:01 > 0:31:02And time starts now.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08For some of the potters, this is more of a rescue mission.

0:31:08 > 0:31:11So I've somehow got to think about sticking it together.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14I've got to glaze all those pieces

0:31:14 > 0:31:16and then glue them together later, I think.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19But Nam's earlier decision to make an extra couple of bowls

0:31:19 > 0:31:22has paid off, and he is feeling generous.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25Clover, you can use my bowl.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28- Are you sure?- Yeah, that's fine. - Thank you so much.

0:31:28 > 0:31:32- No problem.- Nam has been really kind and donated the base.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35It's not far off of the shape that I had anyway,

0:31:35 > 0:31:37so I'm going to use the same decoration.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39I'm going to use a layer of glaze,

0:31:39 > 0:31:41and then try to paint some flowers on it.

0:31:41 > 0:31:45And whilst Richard's attempting to camouflage his crack with glaze,

0:31:45 > 0:31:49Nam is replacing his 3-D tentacles with 2-D ones.

0:31:49 > 0:31:51It was more impressive when I had the tentacles

0:31:51 > 0:31:54coming out of the base. It gave it another dynamic.

0:31:54 > 0:31:55But at the moment, I've lost that,

0:31:55 > 0:31:59and I'm having to retrieve that in another way.

0:31:59 > 0:32:01Base glaze, I'm doing a nice sort of stony grey glaze

0:32:01 > 0:32:04over the whole thing, then I'm going to add in some drizzles of colour

0:32:04 > 0:32:07from the top down. So it's a quite a straightforward glaze, really.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11I'm copying Ryan. Whatever he does, I'll do!

0:32:11 > 0:32:15Seriously. So he is using the grey, so am I.

0:32:15 > 0:32:18But, no, I'm going to have a lot more going on, I think.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20- A lot more colours.- You haven't seen what I'M doing yet.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23Not going to be boring like him! I'm like that...

0:32:24 > 0:32:26What is that?

0:32:27 > 0:32:30I shall be kicking off in this wonderful colour.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34Which, believe it or not, is grey.

0:32:34 > 0:32:38Some glazes change during firing,

0:32:38 > 0:32:39making colours hard to predict.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44I don't know if this is going to look good or just weird.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46I don't know how I can tell that's blue, but it's blue.

0:32:50 > 0:32:52I'm not a risk-taker.

0:32:52 > 0:32:54I'm not going to take any risks.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57I'm going to just do what I thought I was going to do and leave it

0:32:57 > 0:33:00at that. There's nothing I can do to improve on it.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02I really love the carving marks.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04You going to pick out those marks?

0:33:04 > 0:33:07I'm going to use a bit of oxide, I think, just to make it darker.

0:33:07 > 0:33:08What oxide are you using?

0:33:08 > 0:33:10- Copper.- I might push the boat out

0:33:10 > 0:33:12and use some oxide this time as well.

0:33:12 > 0:33:16Yes, but you know, playing safe will never keep us in this competition.

0:33:17 > 0:33:19Potters, you've got ten minutes left.

0:33:19 > 0:33:22Ten minutes until tools down.

0:33:22 > 0:33:24Even if I had another six hours, I don't think it would help!

0:33:24 > 0:33:27Look at Elaine. She's glazing away her broken pieces.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30Well, she's hoping that she can glaze them all,

0:33:30 > 0:33:33fire them all separately, and then maybe stick it back together.

0:33:33 > 0:33:36That's going to be quite a job, isn't it?

0:33:36 > 0:33:37Yes.

0:33:37 > 0:33:41Plan A was to use the stamps I'd made.

0:33:41 > 0:33:46Plan B is to paint them on by hand using the underglazes.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49I'm not in the best of moods today because of what happened,

0:33:49 > 0:33:51but I'm trying to put it into a positive way.

0:33:51 > 0:33:53You've really got a rainbow of colours going on here,

0:33:53 > 0:33:54from orange to blue.

0:33:54 > 0:33:58In fact, it could be better than you originally planned, we have no idea.

0:34:00 > 0:34:02Potters, you've got one minute left.

0:34:02 > 0:34:03Two hands, two hands.

0:34:05 > 0:34:09- Any last-minute touches, flourishes, tweaks?- Whole bowls(?)

0:34:09 > 0:34:1330 seconds. You want to throw another bowl?

0:34:13 > 0:34:14- Yes!- Be quick!

0:34:14 > 0:34:17Ten, nine,

0:34:17 > 0:34:20eight, seven,

0:34:20 > 0:34:22six, five,

0:34:22 > 0:34:25four, three...

0:34:25 > 0:34:28two - I can't bear it! - one! Tools down, please.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30Step away from your water features.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32Tools down. You now need to load up

0:34:32 > 0:34:36your ware boards and take them down to Rich at the kilns, please.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38Whoohoo, look at that!

0:34:38 > 0:34:39Wow!

0:34:39 > 0:34:41Oh, my God, wow!

0:34:49 > 0:34:51So the water features have been decorated.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53It's been quite a dramatic day, hasn't it?

0:34:53 > 0:34:56Yeah, we've had Elaine lose her base bowl.

0:34:56 > 0:34:58We've had Clover lose her base bowl.

0:34:58 > 0:35:02And Nam, he had this great, adventurous octopus water feature

0:35:02 > 0:35:04with beautiful drawings in his notebook.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07Incredible. You know, he's still got the top half,

0:35:07 > 0:35:11but the bottom half was such a main idea of the concept.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15Let's talk about Elaine, what do you think about her decorating?

0:35:15 > 0:35:18As she says, her decoration is limited.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20Maybe that simplicity will work with this fountain,

0:35:20 > 0:35:23and it will be a strong and simple, pared-back message.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26So who is in line for Pot Of The Week?

0:35:26 > 0:35:28I think Ryan is in line for Pot Of The Week.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31He's made quite a monumental sculptural piece.

0:35:31 > 0:35:32For me, it could be Freya.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35I say "could be", because she's still a bit vague

0:35:35 > 0:35:37on the mechanics of how the water feature works.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40So we have just one challenge remaining before the judging,

0:35:40 > 0:35:42and that, of course, is the Spot Test,

0:35:42 > 0:35:45and we've got a very special guest judge - is that right?

0:35:45 > 0:35:48Yes, we have, we've got someone who wowed the nation.

0:35:48 > 0:35:50I think the potters are going to be super-excited.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56So, potters, with it being garden week,

0:35:56 > 0:35:59we have got the perfect Spot Test for you today.

0:35:59 > 0:36:03The judges would like you to hand build a bunch of flowers.

0:36:03 > 0:36:04Oh!

0:36:04 > 0:36:06So romantic!

0:36:06 > 0:36:10Now, a person who knows quite a lot about building flowers is today's

0:36:10 > 0:36:15guest judge. He is responsible for the exquisite sea of poppies at the

0:36:15 > 0:36:18Tower of London. He's a top artist, and his name is Paul Cummins.

0:36:18 > 0:36:20Come in, Paul Cummins!

0:36:24 > 0:36:26Paul Cummins's world-famous installation

0:36:26 > 0:36:30saw a sea of handmade ceramic poppies filling the moat

0:36:30 > 0:36:31of the Tower of London.

0:36:31 > 0:36:34It was a breathtaking spectacle

0:36:34 > 0:36:37made up of almost 900,000 individual flowers.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42Now then, Paul, what would you like our potters to do, exactly?

0:36:42 > 0:36:46Um, right, it's a dozen roses, basically.

0:36:46 > 0:36:50So it's your adaptation of what you think they should look like -

0:36:50 > 0:36:54how they feel, how they look, the texture, the thinness of the petals,

0:36:54 > 0:36:56how you're going to make them your own.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58Come forward, get a rose each.

0:36:58 > 0:37:02'The potters each take a red rose as inspiration for their bunches,

0:37:02 > 0:37:05'but the style and design is up to them.'

0:37:05 > 0:37:08OK, so you can remove your hessian, guys.

0:37:08 > 0:37:12We need a bouquet a beautiful roses, we want 12 of them, please,

0:37:12 > 0:37:15and you have one hour.

0:37:15 > 0:37:16Your time starts now.

0:37:17 > 0:37:22The potters have a choice of red or white clay, or even a bit of both.

0:37:22 > 0:37:23It looks a bit like streaky bacon!

0:37:25 > 0:37:28But the roses must be completely handmade.

0:37:28 > 0:37:31We've got to make a dozen, that is mad!

0:37:31 > 0:37:34So something like the sea of red that you did at the Tower of London,

0:37:34 > 0:37:35how long did that take?

0:37:35 > 0:37:39It took about a good nine months to make them all - and 300 people.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42- That's 100,000 a month - that's nearly a million flowers.- Yep.

0:37:42 > 0:37:45Hand-building is definitely not my strength.

0:37:45 > 0:37:48I think I'm just making pancakes at the moment.

0:37:48 > 0:37:50I've made origami flower before,

0:37:50 > 0:37:54and I've seen my mum making flower with ribbon and then sew it onto

0:37:54 > 0:37:58dresses, so I just thought that, initially, the core of the flower,

0:37:58 > 0:38:02I'm going to use that technique, which is you have a thin strip,

0:38:02 > 0:38:05and then you rolled it and pinned the petal on the way.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07While some are using the rolling method

0:38:07 > 0:38:10- to quickly create their shape... - I'm not feeling that confident,

0:38:10 > 0:38:13there's some really good people who can hand-build here.

0:38:13 > 0:38:15..others are crafting individual petals to build up their

0:38:15 > 0:38:16roses gradually.

0:38:16 > 0:38:17This is quite fiddly.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20But Richard has got his own way of doing things.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23I think I might have made them a little on the large side.

0:38:25 > 0:38:28There's a lot of nice roses being produced, and quite a lot of them -

0:38:28 > 0:38:33- a lot more than- I- have managed, so it's not looking good at the moment.

0:38:33 > 0:38:36You're halfway through your time for this war of the roses,

0:38:36 > 0:38:39girls and boys, 30 minutes left.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41I've noticed Clover has made about ten already.

0:38:42 > 0:38:45I want them to have a certain size, I have a vision of that,

0:38:45 > 0:38:49it's just that I need to add a lot more detail on to them.

0:38:49 > 0:38:51- I'm making them for you, Sara. - Are they meant for me?

0:38:51 > 0:38:54- Yeah, I'm making them for you. - You've got me blushing!

0:38:54 > 0:38:55I hate a fuss, shut up!

0:38:57 > 0:38:59I hope I'll be able to make a decent enough to rose

0:38:59 > 0:39:02to give my girlfriend. I'm very romantic, believe it or not.

0:39:02 > 0:39:04The way I asked my girlfriend to be my girlfriend,

0:39:04 > 0:39:06I invited her to a skate park,

0:39:06 > 0:39:11and I lit the skate park up with candlelight, saying,

0:39:11 > 0:39:14"Would you be my girlfriend?" So I always do romantic stuff.

0:39:14 > 0:39:16Nam is not the only one who can turn on the charm.

0:39:16 > 0:39:20Roses are red, your face is too - a little bit...

0:39:20 > 0:39:23- A lot! - This Spot Test is blooming lovely

0:39:23 > 0:39:25- And so are you. - Thank you very much!

0:39:26 > 0:39:27- Enjoying it?- No.

0:39:27 > 0:39:31- What you mean, no?!- It's horrid, I think I made them too big.

0:39:31 > 0:39:34They're whoppers, they're like those big breakfast muffins.

0:39:34 > 0:39:35Well, they are, but, you know,

0:39:35 > 0:39:37I like a girl to have a nice big flower.

0:39:39 > 0:39:43The potters have just five minutes to complete their dozen roses.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46I'm looking at quantity, not quality.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49- What are we on, then?- This is my tenth, so I've got two more to go.

0:39:49 > 0:39:52Nine, ten. Oh, well done, two more to go.

0:39:52 > 0:39:55One, two, three... Six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

0:39:55 > 0:39:57THUD!

0:39:59 > 0:40:01Oh, dear. Oh, Richard!

0:40:01 > 0:40:03Oh, Richard!

0:40:03 > 0:40:06They were looking so lovely as well, sweetheart, I'm so sorry,

0:40:06 > 0:40:07what a pain.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09What are you going to, are you going to

0:40:09 > 0:40:11start on some new ones and then...?

0:40:11 > 0:40:13- I'll carry on.- Carry on, don't worry, Richard!

0:40:13 > 0:40:15Keep going!

0:40:15 > 0:40:17Come on, Rich!

0:40:17 > 0:40:22# Everybody knows that a love like ours will never die... #

0:40:22 > 0:40:24Faster, Richard.

0:40:24 > 0:40:28# When everything in the garden is growing so high... #

0:40:28 > 0:40:30You can do it, Richard!

0:40:30 > 0:40:38# Everybody knows that a love like this just cannot fail

0:40:38 > 0:40:45# When everything in the garden is growing so fine.. #

0:40:47 > 0:40:49Step back from your flowers, please!

0:40:49 > 0:40:53Now then, one at a time, you need to get your beautiful blooms and bring

0:40:53 > 0:40:55them up to the ware boards, please, ready for judging.

0:40:57 > 0:41:01Paul and the judges are looking for a dozen hand-built roses.

0:41:03 > 0:41:07I think the person who did these knows how to do flower arranging.

0:41:09 > 0:41:12Cos they look really beautifully presented, don't they?

0:41:12 > 0:41:16I preferred where it's not as tight, and it's not as...

0:41:16 > 0:41:17chintzy.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20So these ones...

0:41:20 > 0:41:22They're all a uniform sort of shape and size.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25They're not quite a rose. I can see what happened,

0:41:25 > 0:41:28you carried on doing at the top, and it went down and folded out.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30But they've ended up looking more like a collapsed flower.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33- So these ones.- I do like how they've been pulled together,

0:41:33 > 0:41:35because they look like they're just about to droop,

0:41:35 > 0:41:39but you caught them in sort of the second when they're not.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41What do you think of those, then, Paul?

0:41:41 > 0:41:45I like how they've started off, how they've gone...this area,

0:41:45 > 0:41:47but I don't like how these have ended up.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49They're getting more like ice-cream cones.

0:41:50 > 0:41:54To use the white clay, it makes it a little bit more delicate than

0:41:54 > 0:41:57the red. They're organic, they're a bit smaller than I was expecting,

0:41:57 > 0:42:00but they're really quite nice, how they've been put together.

0:42:00 > 0:42:01There are 12, so that's good.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04They do remind me more of carnations than roses,

0:42:04 > 0:42:07but I do actually like them, they're nice and thin at the edges.

0:42:07 > 0:42:11And a little bit more finesse at the bottom, but they're really nice.

0:42:11 > 0:42:12There's about five roses here.

0:42:12 > 0:42:14This seems like there's been a bit of an accident.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16They're a bit chunky, they could

0:42:16 > 0:42:18refine them slightly more around the edges.

0:42:18 > 0:42:19But they look really nice.

0:42:20 > 0:42:24So whose roses are the best of the bunch?

0:42:24 > 0:42:27Paul now has to decide on an order of merit.

0:42:27 > 0:42:29Seventh place, this one, who is it?

0:42:29 > 0:42:32- Mine.- I do like them.

0:42:32 > 0:42:35Shame you dropped them and couldn't make the rest.

0:42:35 > 0:42:37In sixth place is this one - who is it?

0:42:37 > 0:42:40- That's me.- They do remind me of pine cones more than roses,

0:42:40 > 0:42:45- that's my only problem.- In fifth place is Nam, Elaine was fourth,

0:42:45 > 0:42:48- and Freya third.- They're more delicate than the rest of them,

0:42:48 > 0:42:50and I do like the use of the white clay,

0:42:50 > 0:42:52it makes it look more like paper.

0:42:52 > 0:42:56And in second place is these, I like the uniformity of the flowers,

0:42:56 > 0:42:59and they do look like very, very tiny tea roses.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01And in first place is these.

0:43:01 > 0:43:03Whoo!

0:43:07 > 0:43:09I do like how they look, they're very delicate,

0:43:09 > 0:43:12and they actually have some sort of life within them.

0:43:12 > 0:43:15Cait, a world-renowned artist thinks that your roses are the best,

0:43:15 > 0:43:16well done!

0:43:18 > 0:43:21And you managed to finish them off in the time!

0:43:21 > 0:43:24Well done, all of you have worked so hard, thank you very much,

0:43:24 > 0:43:26and thank you to our guest judge today, Paul Cummins.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29- It's been awesome, thank you.- Thank you.- Guys, the next time we see you,

0:43:29 > 0:43:31we're going to be judging your water features, so go home,

0:43:31 > 0:43:33lie in a darkened room perhaps,

0:43:33 > 0:43:35and we'll see you back in the pottery tomorrow. Thank you.

0:43:38 > 0:43:41When you're hearing the seventh, I was like, "All right, well,

0:43:41 > 0:43:44"I'll probably be sixth." And then it wasn't sixth, so I was like, "OK,

0:43:44 > 0:43:48"maybe fifth." I was like, "Oh, wow, I'm actually doing all right here!"

0:43:48 > 0:43:52I don't think I'll be making flowers again, to be honest!

0:43:52 > 0:43:55I could do with a pint.

0:43:55 > 0:43:57You know, if the worst comes to the worst,

0:43:57 > 0:43:59I'm going home early, you know.

0:44:06 > 0:44:07It's assembly day,

0:44:07 > 0:44:10and the potters arrive at the kiln to collect their water features from

0:44:10 > 0:44:14Rich - and the moment of truth, have their glazes taken?

0:44:15 > 0:44:17Oh, look at that!

0:44:19 > 0:44:21That's not grey!

0:44:24 > 0:44:26It's not grey, though, is it?

0:44:26 > 0:44:29- That's lovely!- Wow! Look at that!

0:44:29 > 0:44:31- That is lovely. - It should be greener.

0:44:33 > 0:44:37For Elaine, it's time to assess what she's got left to work with.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39That's pottery, that's what happens.

0:44:40 > 0:44:42I'm going to fix it with a lot of glue.

0:44:46 > 0:44:50Each of the pieces must now be assembled, ready for judging.

0:44:52 > 0:44:54I can't get my wire through.

0:44:56 > 0:44:58This is going to be a mission.

0:44:58 > 0:45:01This connects to here...

0:45:01 > 0:45:03How accurate the potters' measurements have been

0:45:03 > 0:45:05will now prove crucial.

0:45:08 > 0:45:09Interesting.

0:45:10 > 0:45:12Wobbly, wobbly!

0:45:12 > 0:45:16If the pump doesn't fit, the water won't flow.

0:45:16 > 0:45:17Yeah, it's a bit of a tight fit,

0:45:17 > 0:45:19but I'm just screwing it in at the moment.

0:45:19 > 0:45:21And then it's going to come out, hopefully, the other end.

0:45:21 > 0:45:25It's a bit of a stressful situation for everyone at the moment.

0:45:25 > 0:45:27Oh, God, my fingers are sticking together!

0:45:27 > 0:45:32Elaine has more to worry about than how to fit a pump - with no base,

0:45:32 > 0:45:35- she's in pieces. - This is just not going to happen.

0:45:35 > 0:45:37Maybe if I do it that way.

0:45:38 > 0:45:40Elaine, take your time, slow down.

0:45:44 > 0:45:46It's just not going to hold.

0:45:46 > 0:45:48It's not even worth trying.

0:45:48 > 0:45:51Just cos of the bottom of the crack on the main piece,

0:45:51 > 0:45:54so I've had to prop it up to get it as level as possible.

0:45:57 > 0:45:59- Want a hand?- Are you done?

0:45:59 > 0:46:01There's nothing I can do, it won't stick.

0:46:02 > 0:46:05If you can hold that for me, I'll give you a hand as soon as I...

0:46:05 > 0:46:07No, there's nothing to do.

0:46:07 > 0:46:09There's absolutely nothing to do.

0:46:09 > 0:46:12Elaine can't solve her own problem, so she moves on to everyone else's.

0:46:14 > 0:46:16That goes in there, and then that goes in there.

0:46:18 > 0:46:21Genius! Elaine is a genius!

0:46:22 > 0:46:25Oh, look at that! Thank you, Elaine, magic.

0:46:25 > 0:46:27Nam can't get his spheres to fit,

0:46:27 > 0:46:30so he gets a bit trigger-happy with the silicone gun.

0:46:30 > 0:46:32That gun, you're making a mess,

0:46:32 > 0:46:34and if you lick your finger and then run it round...

0:46:34 > 0:46:36Yeah, but it needs to hold.

0:46:36 > 0:46:37See? It just goes like that.

0:46:38 > 0:46:42With ten minutes to go, Nam thinks of a way to return the favour.

0:46:42 > 0:46:45Elaine, get a bucket, put it in the bucket.

0:46:45 > 0:46:46- No!- Elaine...- No!

0:46:46 > 0:46:49At least it would work. You can get through, I promise you.

0:46:49 > 0:46:52Yeah, but half the thing is going to disappear into it, look.

0:46:52 > 0:46:54- Don't be daft. - They'll need to see it work.

0:46:54 > 0:46:55Elaine!

0:46:57 > 0:47:00It's like World's Strongest Man competition.

0:47:02 > 0:47:06But with just five minutes left, as everyone's rushing to finish...

0:47:06 > 0:47:08Oh, my God, I'm running out of time, am I?

0:47:08 > 0:47:11..Elaine decides it's worth a shot after all.

0:47:11 > 0:47:13Well done, Elaine.

0:47:20 > 0:47:22Sorry, I do a lot of grunting, don't I?

0:47:22 > 0:47:25Oh, f-f-flipping heck!

0:47:27 > 0:47:28Well done!

0:47:31 > 0:47:33You finally listened to me for once in your life!

0:47:33 > 0:47:34You hate listening to me!

0:47:38 > 0:47:40Over the past four days,

0:47:40 > 0:47:44the potters have used almost 300 kilos of clay

0:47:44 > 0:47:46to make their water features.

0:47:46 > 0:47:49They now have to see if they work in front of the judges.

0:47:55 > 0:47:59Well, potters, what a Main Make it's been.

0:47:59 > 0:48:01You've all worked so hard.

0:48:01 > 0:48:04Judges, please remind us of your criteria.

0:48:04 > 0:48:07We want your fountain to be a beautiful feature for a garden.

0:48:07 > 0:48:10Up close, we want to see great attention to detail.

0:48:10 > 0:48:14And they have to work as a water feature. They have to work.

0:48:15 > 0:48:18OK, without further ado, let judging commence.

0:48:33 > 0:48:34We understand that this isn't your bowl.

0:48:34 > 0:48:37- No.- This was given to you by Nam,

0:48:37 > 0:48:40because yours obviously blew up in the biscuit firing.

0:48:40 > 0:48:42- Yep.- Very sweet of Nam to do that, wasn't it?

0:48:42 > 0:48:46- Yeah, really thankful.- So I have to say, from a distance,

0:48:46 > 0:48:48I think this would stand out very well.

0:48:48 > 0:48:51- Thank you.- For me, the paintwork is a bit stiff.

0:48:51 > 0:48:53You've got a bit of a crack here.

0:48:53 > 0:48:56- Mmm.- Shall we see if it actually flows with water?

0:48:56 > 0:48:59- Let's try it!- It makes a nice noise, doesn't it? TRICKLING

0:48:59 > 0:49:00Oh, it gets louder.

0:49:00 > 0:49:03I love the way it moves from one chamber to another to another,

0:49:03 > 0:49:07- and down.- The reason why some of these aren't working so well is

0:49:07 > 0:49:09because the gap is that little too narrow

0:49:09 > 0:49:11for the water to pour through.

0:49:11 > 0:49:14- It's very pretty, though. - Excellent. Thanks, Clover.

0:49:14 > 0:49:15- Thank you.- Thanks a lot.

0:49:20 > 0:49:24I'm really sad about your stamps - I loved your idea of stamps.

0:49:24 > 0:49:27My mistake, really, allowing the clay to dry a bit too hard

0:49:27 > 0:49:29and I couldn't get a real good impression.

0:49:29 > 0:49:31So shall we turn the temple on?

0:49:31 > 0:49:32Yeah, let's turn that blood on.

0:49:33 > 0:49:36It does... It's quite disturbing, isn't it?

0:49:37 > 0:49:40I think the neighbours are going to be like, "Harold, we're moving!"

0:49:48 > 0:49:52Can I just ask, these lighter bits, is that bits of Reuben's ashes,

0:49:52 > 0:49:53have they still come through?

0:49:53 > 0:49:56- Yeah.- Ready. Oh, here it comes.

0:49:56 > 0:49:58Hmm...

0:50:00 > 0:50:02I don't feel that you've guided the water.

0:50:02 > 0:50:05And this doesn't really resemble a dog's nose for me.

0:50:05 > 0:50:07But, Cait,

0:50:07 > 0:50:09it's actually really good.

0:50:09 > 0:50:12I love, I love this texture, I think it's great!

0:50:13 > 0:50:18But as for your theory, your main concept, forget it.

0:50:18 > 0:50:19Forget it!

0:50:31 > 0:50:33- Elaine...- Hello.

0:50:33 > 0:50:35There's nothing to see here, judges, it's all fine.

0:50:35 > 0:50:37My beautiful white bowl.

0:50:38 > 0:50:42The first thing I think of when I look at that, I just think,

0:50:42 > 0:50:44- where are the tiers?- Yeah.

0:50:44 > 0:50:45- Where are the tiers?- No, exactly.

0:50:45 > 0:50:48There should be a bowl here, there should be a bowl here,

0:50:48 > 0:50:51and then maybe this wouldn't be so relevant.

0:50:51 > 0:50:52It's my design...

0:50:53 > 0:50:56- Shall we give it a whirl, then? - Yep.

0:50:58 > 0:51:00- It is coming from all the holes. - It's very even, actually,

0:51:00 > 0:51:02it's incredibly even.

0:51:02 > 0:51:04This just needed a bigger one, didn't it?

0:51:04 > 0:51:07The faults are fairly blindingly obvious, OK?

0:51:07 > 0:51:11But you are a good thrower, you are good.

0:51:11 > 0:51:14- Thank you.- And that's what's so frustrating.- Mmm.

0:51:21 > 0:51:23We asked for at least two tiers, you've got that.

0:51:23 > 0:51:27I think the drawings of the squid or the octopus or the deep-sea creature

0:51:27 > 0:51:31was fabulous, and I was so looking forward to seeing it,

0:51:31 > 0:51:34but even if the bigger bowl had been here and the tentacles

0:51:34 > 0:51:35had been there, I don't know

0:51:35 > 0:51:38if this structure would have worked, visually.

0:51:38 > 0:51:41The silicone sealant is showing quite horribly.

0:51:41 > 0:51:42I got a bit trigger-happy with the...

0:51:42 > 0:51:45Yeah, yeah, you have to be very careful with silicone.

0:51:45 > 0:51:49So, without further ado, I think we ought to switch it on.

0:51:49 > 0:51:53- Here it comes.- This spiral has really worked, hasn't it?

0:51:53 > 0:51:58Yeah. The way the light is playing on the water as it moves down is

0:51:58 > 0:52:00really, really effective.

0:52:00 > 0:52:01- Thank you.- Thank you.

0:52:12 > 0:52:14It's a bit disjointed.

0:52:14 > 0:52:18This looks like a completely different style to maybe this.

0:52:18 > 0:52:20And then this bowl, for me,

0:52:20 > 0:52:23it does look completely disjointed from the rest.

0:52:23 > 0:52:25The colour, yeah, it's brown, innit?

0:52:25 > 0:52:27- It's brown.- Nasty brown. - You've done a brown thing.

0:52:27 > 0:52:29It's nasty brown.

0:52:29 > 0:52:32Because the blue hasn't really accentuated it that much.

0:52:32 > 0:52:33Shall we turn it on?

0:52:35 > 0:52:38You got all these different columns of water happening

0:52:38 > 0:52:41- in all different places.- It's actually enhanced the structure.

0:52:41 > 0:52:43- Yeah.- That's got to be a good thing.

0:52:43 > 0:52:45It's an impressive build, don't you think?

0:52:45 > 0:52:47Oh, yeah, it's definitely an impressive build -

0:52:47 > 0:52:49just a bit too brown.

0:52:59 > 0:53:01Well, first of all, I have to say, from a distance,

0:53:01 > 0:53:03there's a lovely height.

0:53:03 > 0:53:07You've elevated your bottom bowl very nicely, and I loved the way,

0:53:07 > 0:53:09when you were making, you had your two fingers,

0:53:09 > 0:53:10and you pressed from the inside,

0:53:10 > 0:53:12and you really showed the malleability of the clay.

0:53:12 > 0:53:15- Shall we see how it works? - Yes, here it comes.

0:53:15 > 0:53:17Oh, God!

0:53:17 > 0:53:19It's lovely!

0:53:19 > 0:53:21The reason why these are working quite well

0:53:21 > 0:53:24is because you've done them like a jug, a lip -

0:53:24 > 0:53:26you've thought about the water flowing.

0:53:26 > 0:53:29I can imagine this in a garden, you being drawn towards,

0:53:29 > 0:53:32having a look at it. It's a successful piece.

0:53:32 > 0:53:34Lovely, OK. Freya, thank you very much.

0:53:34 > 0:53:35- Thank you.- Cheers.

0:53:37 > 0:53:40OK, my darling potters, you can go, get a breath of fresh air,

0:53:40 > 0:53:42and we'll see you back here shortly.

0:53:42 > 0:53:43Kate and Keith have got a lot to chat about,

0:53:43 > 0:53:45because they've got to decide

0:53:45 > 0:53:47who will win Pot Of The Week and who, sadly,

0:53:47 > 0:53:48will be leaving the pottery.

0:53:48 > 0:53:51See you in a little while, off you go.

0:53:53 > 0:53:57Ah, my tiers were very minimal, and I could see that now.

0:53:57 > 0:53:59Not good news, really.

0:54:00 > 0:54:02I desperately want to be here next week.

0:54:03 > 0:54:05I just don't know.

0:54:05 > 0:54:08You know, the vision was not there in the final piece,

0:54:08 > 0:54:11and I think I might be the one going home.

0:54:13 > 0:54:14Well, I'm rather enjoying garden week,

0:54:14 > 0:54:18I might try and pocket one of those water features on my way out.

0:54:18 > 0:54:19So let's start with the fun stuff,

0:54:19 > 0:54:23who have you got your eye on for possible Pot Of The Week?

0:54:23 > 0:54:24Well, one of them is Freya.

0:54:24 > 0:54:28Her throwing skills are really, really good, very competent.

0:54:28 > 0:54:32It is a gorgeous fountain that she's made, the tiers are there, it works,

0:54:32 > 0:54:35it shows the softness of the clay, when she was making.

0:54:35 > 0:54:38- Whose else did you like? - It was Ryan's.

0:54:38 > 0:54:40I thought he'd really put himself out there

0:54:40 > 0:54:43to a very playful water feature.

0:54:43 > 0:54:46And it was fairly obvious that he'd really,

0:54:46 > 0:54:49really thought about how that water was going to cascade down the piece.

0:54:49 > 0:54:52And for me, that really said it all.

0:54:52 > 0:54:55Now, you got quite emotional over Cait's dog nose.

0:54:55 > 0:54:59I did! She's done it again, she kind of pulled it out of the bag,

0:54:59 > 0:55:03and that surface that she got on the top was quite incredible.

0:55:03 > 0:55:05I thought it was brilliant.

0:55:05 > 0:55:07It seems so cruel that somebody's got to leave the pottery,

0:55:07 > 0:55:09because all seven of them have worked so hard,

0:55:09 > 0:55:12but who do you think just aren't cutting it?

0:55:12 > 0:55:14It's down to two people.

0:55:14 > 0:55:15One of them is Nam.

0:55:15 > 0:55:20And for me, really, with deep regret, really deep regret,

0:55:20 > 0:55:21is Elaine.

0:55:21 > 0:55:24You know, she hasn't fulfilled the criteria.

0:55:24 > 0:55:27This is really tough, really tough.

0:55:37 > 0:55:41Well, potters, the judges have had a long old chat.

0:55:41 > 0:55:45Doing the happy job of Pot Of The Week is Kate this week.

0:55:45 > 0:55:47It IS a happy job,

0:55:47 > 0:55:51and I'd like to say that the water feature that uses clay to its best,

0:55:51 > 0:55:53that uses glaze very beautifully,

0:55:53 > 0:56:00and moves water over a lovely set of tiers is the water feature that was

0:56:00 > 0:56:01made by...

0:56:05 > 0:56:07..Freya.

0:56:07 > 0:56:09Well done.

0:56:13 > 0:56:17- Thank you.- I'm left with the less-happy task.

0:56:18 > 0:56:22The person leaving the pottery this week is...

0:56:29 > 0:56:30It's Elaine.

0:56:32 > 0:56:33Oh!

0:56:34 > 0:56:36- I guessed that.- Did you, did you?

0:56:36 > 0:56:38They talked a long time.

0:56:38 > 0:56:40Sweetheart, they really did.

0:56:40 > 0:56:44- Thank you.- What a pleasure, absolute pleasure.

0:56:44 > 0:56:47- Cheers, Elaine.- Bye.

0:56:47 > 0:56:52'Oh, I will miss everybody, we have become such a good group.'

0:56:52 > 0:56:55Absolutely devastated and shocked that Elaine is going,

0:56:55 > 0:56:56she's an amazing potter.

0:56:56 > 0:56:58Elaine was the only person who actually took care

0:56:58 > 0:57:02of me, it's insane that I survived. She was like my surrogate mother.

0:57:02 > 0:57:07The judges made the right call, I didn't have defined tiers,

0:57:07 > 0:57:10I thought that previously, so I guessed it was going to be me today.

0:57:12 > 0:57:15Sending Elaine home was a really, really difficult decision,

0:57:15 > 0:57:19because her throwing skills are really fantastic,

0:57:19 > 0:57:23but she just had to go - she hadn't fulfilled the criteria.

0:57:23 > 0:57:27Freya, well done. Yeah, you are Pot Of The Week!

0:57:27 > 0:57:29Freya's water feature becomes the fourth piece

0:57:29 > 0:57:32to earn its place in the gallery.

0:57:32 > 0:57:35The fluidity with which she made her bowls and bent them was gorgeous,

0:57:35 > 0:57:40and the glazes worked, and that is why she won Pot Of The Week.

0:57:40 > 0:57:45I didn't expect to be Pot Of The Week, not at all, no, not at all.

0:57:45 > 0:57:47Not at all! You know, there's very little

0:57:47 > 0:57:48that I've really been proud of,

0:57:48 > 0:57:52and I really want to, like, flourish and blossom through this process,

0:57:52 > 0:57:56so it's nice to have something to be proud of, yeah, it's good.

0:57:56 > 0:57:57Happy about that.

0:57:59 > 0:58:02- Next time...- It's like we're entering the jungle!

0:58:02 > 0:58:04..it's pit firing...

0:58:04 > 0:58:06- It's a World War II bomb! - Don't touch it, everybody!

0:58:06 > 0:58:08..as the potters go camping.

0:58:08 > 0:58:11You can't go on strike, potters!

0:58:11 > 0:58:13'A spot test that gets a little fruity...'

0:58:13 > 0:58:15Who wanted the pumpkin?

0:58:15 > 0:58:18- I wanted the pumpkin!- ..and a Throw Down that gets fierce.
