0:00:02 > 0:00:04It's the quarterfinals and, cor, what a scorcher!

0:00:04 > 0:00:06Things are certainly heating up for our six remaining potters,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09who have pulled, thrown, coiled and slapped their way this far.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11However, now it's all about their flanges.

0:00:11 > 0:00:12It sounds a touch uncomfortable.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14This is The Great Pottery Throw Down.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19Last time, the potters camped out...

0:00:19 > 0:00:22- Morning, guys. - ..for an ancient pit firing.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24Whoo!

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Richard finally turned his back on history...

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Oh, my goodness, how beautiful.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32..with a modern masterpiece that won Pot Of The Week.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37- I'm speechless.- That's never happened before.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41But with the judges unable to separate Freya, Cait and Ryan...

0:00:42 > 0:00:43It looks like that.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45..no-one was sent home.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47I'm really frustrated.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49Now for the first time in the competition...

0:00:49 > 0:00:51Has anyone started the flange?

0:00:51 > 0:00:53..two potters will be sent home.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Character-building, that.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57So whose Russian dolls will fit the brief?

0:00:57 > 0:00:58Oh!

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Whose Spot Test will reveal the touch of an artist?

0:01:01 > 0:01:02Oh!

0:01:02 > 0:01:05And who can feel their way through a Throw Down...

0:01:06 > 0:01:07What?!

0:01:07 > 0:01:09..that has to be seen to be believed?

0:01:09 > 0:01:13I'm getting worried now, I'm getting really worried.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20# Makin' time

0:01:21 > 0:01:24# Shootin' lines

0:01:25 > 0:01:27# The people have their uses

0:01:28 > 0:01:31# People have their uses... #

0:01:43 > 0:01:46This week there is a lot more uncertainty

0:01:46 > 0:01:49and two people are going to go home.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Last week I was that close to going,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53and I really have to pull my socks up

0:01:53 > 0:01:54to stay in the competition.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56I'm a bit worried about hand-building,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58but we will see how it goes, I could be the dark horse in this one.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01I won Pot Of The Week last week.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03This week I am hoping to do the same with my hand build.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05You know, I'm confident.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08Just four days and three more challenges stand

0:02:08 > 0:02:10between the potters and a place in the semifinal.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Well, good morning, potters.

0:02:13 > 0:02:14- POTTERS:- Morning.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16This week, Kate and Keith would like you to

0:02:16 > 0:02:19hand build a family of four Russian dolls.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22The two halves of your dolls must close together

0:02:22 > 0:02:25and fit together using a flange and gallery.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Keith, what is a flange and gallery?

0:02:28 > 0:02:33A gallery is a section of the pot on the rim where you have a small step

0:02:33 > 0:02:35and the flange is a section on the rim

0:02:35 > 0:02:38of the other one where they fit together.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41When you think of a Russian doll, you think of the traditional shape,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44but you can do any shape you like.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48What's important is that the four pieces fit inside each other and we

0:02:48 > 0:02:52want these pieces to be intricate and beautiful.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55OK, potters, you've got four hours to hand build your Russian dolls.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Time starts now.

0:03:01 > 0:03:02There's a huge amount of pressure now

0:03:02 > 0:03:05since we know that there's two people leaving. We're feeling it.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Last week, I was in the bottom three,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10so I feel I've been given a second chance.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12I've never made a Russian doll before.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14I don't see why I would, in clay.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20We'd given the potters a hand building task before,

0:03:20 > 0:03:22but this is really different.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24There's a lot of technicalities involved in this.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28Four Russian dolls, not only do they have to fit inside each other,

0:03:28 > 0:03:30so they have to get the shrinkage and the proportions right,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33but they have to actually fit together.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37Building a gallery and a flange to fit properly is no mean feat.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39We are not expecting a tight, snug fit.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42But we are expecting to see a lovely clean gallery

0:03:42 > 0:03:44and we are expecting it to work.

0:03:44 > 0:03:45One of the things about hand-building,

0:03:45 > 0:03:47they are coiling and they are pinching, aren't they?

0:03:47 > 0:03:49It doesn't have to be round.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53They can be mobile phones, or they can be robots or houses.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55They can pinch away from the round,

0:03:55 > 0:03:59but they still have to keep all our criteria in mind,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03and I'm hoping to see them really think out of the box, actually.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Richard has decided not to think out of the box.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09I'll start with the largest one first.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11He is thinking out of the pyramid instead.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Canopic jars, and these were the jars which

0:04:14 > 0:04:18were laid next to Pharaoh, and they contained his bodily organs.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21I was looking at them and I instantly thought Russian dolls.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23The tops of Richard's Russian dolls

0:04:23 > 0:04:25will feature Egyptian gods in the form

0:04:25 > 0:04:29of a jackal, a hawk, a baboon and a boy.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Obviously you had Pot Of The Week last week,

0:04:32 > 0:04:35but just focus on every aspect of the design.

0:04:35 > 0:04:36Absolutely. Last week is last week,

0:04:36 > 0:04:38we can't live in the past all the time.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46The potters are hand-building their dolls using the coiling technique

0:04:46 > 0:04:49but, for speed, some are using an extruder,

0:04:49 > 0:04:51which forces clay into usable lengths.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Women first, let them out of the way.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57Richard just enjoys watching us struggle!

0:04:57 > 0:04:59We need more hands, really.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01Look, I'm using my head.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04Nam's begun with a technique that's a little less strenuous.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06This is how we make pasta in Vietnam.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Nam's Russian dolls are inspired by the shape of the Lotus pod.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14He is making the tops and bottoms separately

0:05:14 > 0:05:17and the distinctive look of hand-rolled coils

0:05:17 > 0:05:19will be a crucial part of his design.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21You are smoothing the coils on the inside,

0:05:21 > 0:05:24but you are leaving the coils on the outside?

0:05:24 > 0:05:26- On the top one, yes.- On the top one?

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Yes. What I've done, I have kind of customised my formers

0:05:28 > 0:05:30to allow me to have a certain shape.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32When I press the clay in it will give me a leaf-like shape

0:05:32 > 0:05:35and I know that when I get these out on the outside they have got...

0:05:35 > 0:05:37- Grooves like contours? - Yeah, correct.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39I did practise once in my house.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42My partner didn't like it, though. She is my biggest critic.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45The critics you have got to worry about are these two judges right here, Nam, to be fair.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48I was going to say, your partner's not the judge, so don't worry.

0:05:48 > 0:05:49We are. You better worry about us.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50Yeah.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54While Nam is coiling on the inside of customised bowls,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57all the others are coiling around the outside

0:05:57 > 0:05:59of objects known as formers.

0:05:59 > 0:06:05Made from absolutely anything, they could find or make.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07I've got these 3-D printed formers.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11I am going to start with the smallest one and work my way up.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14I decided on using the rhyme of

0:06:14 > 0:06:17There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed A Fly.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20Cait's nursery rhyme dolls will start with

0:06:20 > 0:06:22the old lady and each one she'll contain

0:06:22 > 0:06:24will be decorated with what they've swallowed.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27They start to look a little bit like

0:06:27 > 0:06:31- sarcophagus mummies, don't they? - Hey, don't copy Richard's idea!

0:06:31 > 0:06:34- Oh, yeah! - You might win, I'll take it.

0:06:35 > 0:06:36No!

0:06:36 > 0:06:40But coiling around a former isn't working for everyone.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43I don't know what I'm doing.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46I've been trying to make,

0:06:46 > 0:06:49this is the fourth doll I have made and it is all fail.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51I don't know how to do it!

0:06:51 > 0:06:57I am going to do something to bring awareness of global warming,

0:06:57 > 0:07:01illegal hunting, overfishing and pollution in the sea.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Clover's endangered dolls begin with a polar bear.

0:07:04 > 0:07:09It will contain a seal, containing a fish and finally a piece of coral.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13But attempting the smallest design out of all the potters

0:07:13 > 0:07:14hasn't meant less work.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17I still have trouble taking it off my former.

0:07:17 > 0:07:18It's not working, is it?

0:07:18 > 0:07:20- But if...- No, no, no. You've got the rough shape,

0:07:20 > 0:07:22you've got the proportion.

0:07:22 > 0:07:23It's not going to work.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28I think I need to start again.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32Whilst Clover wrestles with the smallest design...

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Has anyone got masking tape?

0:07:34 > 0:07:37..Ryan's could well be the biggest.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39I am making a family of fish today.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41I made some formers out of Styrofoam,

0:07:41 > 0:07:43starting with the largest one first.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45An old fisherman's tale, you know.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47I caught a fish this big, it got away.

0:07:47 > 0:07:48And then that fish was actually that big,

0:07:48 > 0:07:51and then it was actually that big and then actually that big.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53So it is that whole, like, fisherman's tale, really.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Ryan's enormous fish will be severed at the head to reveal

0:07:56 > 0:07:58each smaller catch inside.

0:07:58 > 0:07:59He needs to add lips,

0:07:59 > 0:08:03fins and hundreds of scales, and to perfect his flanges and galleries,

0:08:03 > 0:08:04he's got a secret weapon.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06My dad has made me this lovely little tool,

0:08:06 > 0:08:09- which I don't know if it is going to work yet.- I like a tool.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11- What is this going to do?- I want that tool, thanks very much!

0:08:11 > 0:08:12What is that going to do?

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Well, my dad thinks it's going to be...

0:08:14 > 0:08:15- Roll and cut.- Yeah, roll and cut.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17That's amazing.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19Like a can opener, basically.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21And I made some of these little looped tools

0:08:21 > 0:08:23to make some fish scales as well.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25- OK.- This is exciting.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Your tools are just fantastic.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29I want to meet your dad. Does he want to come round?

0:08:30 > 0:08:34Freya has also chosen to go large for the quarterfinal.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36This is my inspiration.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41These African masks I have around my house.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43So my design is,

0:08:43 > 0:08:47I have got these four talking heads and the middle one has

0:08:47 > 0:08:51got a tongue that pokes all the way through to the beginning one.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53Like that.

0:08:53 > 0:08:54Of all of the potters, Freya is

0:08:54 > 0:08:57attempting the most work at the hand-building stage,

0:08:57 > 0:08:59adding separate clay features

0:08:59 > 0:09:02and pinching the surface of her interlocking masks.

0:09:02 > 0:09:03But even with all that work,

0:09:03 > 0:09:06there is something missing with her design.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08There isn't going to be a typical flange.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10They lock into each other like teeth.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- Oh, I see.- So they register into each other?

0:09:13 > 0:09:18- Yeah.- OK.- Sorry to tell you but the part of the criteria is that

0:09:18 > 0:09:21it has to be a flange that fits.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23You can't just have that.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25That is the point, OK.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28Is that a big old spanner in the works or is it doable?

0:09:28 > 0:09:29Yeah, it is a spanner.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34OK, potters, you've got one hour left.

0:09:34 > 0:09:35This is your one-hour call.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40- That woke you up.- It's just coils, it's just coils.

0:09:40 > 0:09:41This bench is cursed.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Cursed, I'll tell you.

0:09:43 > 0:09:49I've just started to cut my pots in two and I am now trying to get

0:09:49 > 0:09:51the formers out of them.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53The wall is really, really thin,

0:09:53 > 0:09:57so I have not got masses to work with for creating a gallery,

0:09:57 > 0:09:59so that is going to be really fiddly.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Has anyone started the flange?

0:10:01 > 0:10:06If the potters can find the time to create a basic flange and gallery at

0:10:06 > 0:10:08this building stage...

0:10:08 > 0:10:09I think getting the gallery to fit

0:10:09 > 0:10:11is probably one of the hardest things to do.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13..after the dolls have dried,

0:10:13 > 0:10:14they'll be able to trim them

0:10:14 > 0:10:16to ensure the perfect fit that the judges

0:10:16 > 0:10:18will be looking for.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20I'm going to try and make the flanges as thin as possible,

0:10:20 > 0:10:22because they need to fit in each other.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25So I'm going to wet my surface...

0:10:25 > 0:10:27And let the coil adhere to it.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30But they also need to ensure that none of this extra clay

0:10:30 > 0:10:34will prevent the dolls from fitting inside one another.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38There's so much that can go wrong. You can underestimate,

0:10:38 > 0:10:41you can overestimate, so it's even more critical now.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43But having finally managed to take

0:10:43 > 0:10:45her miniature dolls off her formers...

0:10:45 > 0:10:50I decided to make the last one solid, to save myself some time.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54..clover now faces creating tiny galleries and flanges.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57I'm trying to fix this gallery and fringe here

0:10:57 > 0:10:58because they were a bit too loose,

0:10:58 > 0:11:01so I'm adding a bit more thickness into it.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04Now I need to make sure the smaller ones fit in.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07OK. I may need to thin a little bit...

0:11:07 > 0:11:09Definitely snug, isn't it, when it went in there?

0:11:09 > 0:11:11- Yeah.- You seem calm though.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13Ah...grr!

0:11:13 > 0:11:15You've moved on a bit from the panic.

0:11:15 > 0:11:20After my panic eased, start feeling the joy of it now.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22But at this stage of the main make...

0:11:22 > 0:11:26I've added a coil and then I'm going to carve a gallery from the top.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28..there's no joy for Freya.

0:11:28 > 0:11:29It's a bit of a last-minute thing.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32I've failed miserably on that.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34For some reason I just thought I could

0:11:34 > 0:11:37get away with creating a different sort of opening.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40And Freya is not the only one struggling.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43It's... It's just very sticky.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46Potters, you've got 30 minutes left.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52Time just seems to fly, doesn't it?

0:11:52 > 0:11:53How are you doing?

0:11:53 > 0:11:57I'm getting bored of saying...

0:11:57 > 0:11:59"Oh, I'm running out of time."

0:11:59 > 0:12:02Is it a case of that you've got sort of

0:12:02 > 0:12:0525 minutes but you need 30 minutes, ideally?

0:12:05 > 0:12:08Still need to do the galleries and flanges to them.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Maybe an hour? Two hours?

0:12:10 > 0:12:11- A day. A week?- A week.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14With her flange and galleries constructed,

0:12:14 > 0:12:18Clover has begun working on the surface decoration

0:12:18 > 0:12:20of her endangered species.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24As has Ryan, with his fish fins and the tail for his biggest catch.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27Speed fish scaling.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30- That's what's going on here. - Speed fishing.- Speed fishin'!

0:12:37 > 0:12:39To keep with the sort of water theme, are you like a swan,

0:12:39 > 0:12:42where you seem to be gliding along but you are furiously paddling

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- underneath?- I am furiously paddling underneath right now.- Yeah.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Rather than going into the drying room,

0:12:50 > 0:12:53the potters are covering their pieces

0:12:53 > 0:12:54in clingfilm so they don't dry out

0:12:54 > 0:12:57too much for the trimming stage when the clay

0:12:57 > 0:12:59still needs to be a little moist.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04Ten, nine, eight, seven...

0:13:04 > 0:13:05Are these going in, Cait?

0:13:05 > 0:13:07- Yeah, yeah, yeah.- OK, six...

0:13:07 > 0:13:11OK. Five, four, pop that under your arm.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15Three, two...

0:13:17 > 0:13:19..one. Time's up.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23Whilst the hand-built Russian dolls dry

0:13:23 > 0:13:25and become leather hard, ready to be trimmed,

0:13:25 > 0:13:30there's just time for a challenge at the wheel and it's a Throw Down that

0:13:30 > 0:13:32no-one saw coming.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36This week, Kate and Keith would like you to throw the widest bowl you can...

0:13:37 > 0:13:39..blindfolded.

0:13:39 > 0:13:41What?!

0:13:41 > 0:13:43- Really.- I'll just take my glasses off.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46That's me done.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50The reason for blindfolding you is that you really do get

0:13:50 > 0:13:54a sense that your fingers and your hands are your eyes.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00So, off we go.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03And you are really feeling that clay through your hands.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07You can feel when the clay is off centre.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09You need to gauge how thick your base is

0:14:09 > 0:14:12and how wide you want to make the bowl.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16You are constantly using your fingers as gauges.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21So now, I am bringing the clay up, I'm just being really controlled...

0:14:23 > 0:14:29Now, I am using the flat of my left hand on the inside to really just

0:14:29 > 0:14:31bring that bowl out.

0:14:31 > 0:14:35And I'm visualising the outside shape

0:14:35 > 0:14:38and then I'm going to rib up the side,

0:14:38 > 0:14:43making sure that I've got the rib at an angle that's not going to destroy

0:14:43 > 0:14:46the pot and then I'm just going to tidy up the rim,

0:14:46 > 0:14:49just lightly place that on there.

0:14:51 > 0:14:52So, there we go.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55Wow!

0:14:55 > 0:14:56APPLAUSE

0:15:00 > 0:15:03- OK.- OK, so...

0:15:03 > 0:15:05Potters, blindfolds on, please.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07You have ten minutes...

0:15:07 > 0:15:12- Ten minutes?!- To throw the widest, neatest bowl you can.

0:15:12 > 0:15:13Potters, get potting.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22Just try and relax into it and enjoy it.

0:15:24 > 0:15:28# I know you deceive me, so here's a surprise... #

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Your hands are your eyes.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34Just remember the danger is, if you go too wide,

0:15:34 > 0:15:37it will collapse, go too narrow, it won't be wide enough.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41# I can see for miles and miles... #

0:15:41 > 0:15:42Ryan's is going wobbly here.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45Not a peep out of him.

0:15:51 > 0:15:52- Nam, why are you making a plate? - What?

0:15:57 > 0:15:59Lovely, isn't it? Lovely, lovely challenge.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04Remember, things seem bigger when you can't see them.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06Story of my life.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08Things seem bigger in the dark.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13Don't overdo it.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16Decide when you think you've got the clay to its optimum.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18I am getting worried now.

0:16:18 > 0:16:19Getting really worried.

0:16:19 > 0:16:23# I know that you have, cos there's magic in my eyes... #

0:16:23 > 0:16:25You've got one minute left of this Throw Down.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27Remember, you've got to wire it up at the end, OK?

0:16:27 > 0:16:30# Miles and miles and miles... #

0:16:30 > 0:16:31Oh, no.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Hey, Clover.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39- Yeah.- I've come to you at quite an intense moment.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42I know. I know, my bowl has collapsed.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46- Sweetheart...- I am just trying to shape it now, really.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49There's not much I can do. The wheel is not going to go.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51At least you've got something, all right?

0:16:52 > 0:16:54OK, here we go.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56Ten, nine...

0:16:56 > 0:16:58These things need wiring off.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01..eight, seven,

0:17:01 > 0:17:03six, five...

0:17:03 > 0:17:08Take your time with it. ..four, three, two,

0:17:08 > 0:17:11one. Time is up.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14- Well done.- Get back. Hands off your bowls, please.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16Hands off your bowls.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18- Well done.- Wow!

0:17:19 > 0:17:23Keith and Kate are looking for level-sided, neatly rimmed bowls.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25Each one will be measured and

0:17:25 > 0:17:27they'll reveal who has thrown the widest

0:17:27 > 0:17:29after everyone has been judged.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32- That's not bad.- We'll be the judge of that, obviously.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34Of course, of course. That goes without saying.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36You could have used more of this clay

0:17:36 > 0:17:37down the bottom to sort of really

0:17:37 > 0:17:41belly it out. It probably would have given you an extra centimetre or so.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43- Shall we measure it?- Yeah.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45OK. Thank you, Richard.

0:17:45 > 0:17:46Well done.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50I would say that the rim is a bit too thick.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53The clay in the rim should have been on the side of the pot.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58This is a wider bowl than I've ever made with my eyes open.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00It's true. I think you probably

0:18:00 > 0:18:02concentrate more when your eyes are closed

0:18:02 > 0:18:06and you really do need to use all the other senses.

0:18:08 > 0:18:12What I like about it is looking at a rim that's nice and thin.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15It's a really nice shape on the outside, as well.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19Oh!

0:18:20 > 0:18:23You have kept it a bit on the conservative side,

0:18:23 > 0:18:26but there's a sense of purpose to the bowl which is really good.

0:18:28 > 0:18:31Have you any idea what happened?

0:18:31 > 0:18:33I went for the contemporary design.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37Well done(!) It's, you know...

0:18:37 > 0:18:39Yeah, it's collapsed.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Tough one today for you.

0:18:42 > 0:18:43I'm sorry.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47So, which blindfolded potter threw the neatest and widest bowl?

0:18:47 > 0:18:50Sixth place, dear Clover.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Your piece collapsed because you had too much weight up in the rim.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57Fifth is Nam with a bowl 26.8 centimetres wide.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59Freya's bowl was 30.5 centimetres,

0:18:59 > 0:19:03but with uneven sides, so Cait beat her to third place

0:19:03 > 0:19:06with a bowl of 30.1 centimetres.

0:19:06 > 0:19:07Well done, Cait.

0:19:08 > 0:19:13So in second place, 30 and three millimetres was...

0:19:13 > 0:19:15was Richard.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18- Thank you.- Good, fine high and wide bowl, Richard.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21So, first place, Ryan.

0:19:21 > 0:19:22Well done, Ryan.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24APPLAUSE

0:19:24 > 0:19:2630.9.

0:19:26 > 0:19:30You really accentuated the inside of the bowl.

0:19:30 > 0:19:31A nice, delicate rim.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34Really showed me that you were really using the senses.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36Well done.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39I think that is now going to help me with my hand-building as well.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42You know, that bit of confidence. I think I needed that.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44Six millimetres.

0:19:44 > 0:19:45I've got to be honest,

0:19:45 > 0:19:48Ryan's bowl was a really good bowl, so fair play.

0:19:48 > 0:19:49The right chap won.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51I feel fantastic.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53I think all my throwing needs to be done blindfolded.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57I think I'm the weakest link so far.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59Haven't won anything. Absolutely nothing.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02So if there are three people down in the bottom

0:20:02 > 0:20:05and they have to get rid of two, I'm definitely one of the two.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13The Russian dolls have been drying for two hours.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17My dolls are the perfect dryness to work on the trimming stage.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19It's a little bit dry.

0:20:19 > 0:20:24The potters now have just 60 minutes to trim and refine all four of them.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26I've got a huge amount to do in a short period of time.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29Ideally, I'd have another hour, I guess.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32The most important thing that I want to see the potters doing is

0:20:32 > 0:20:33making sure it all works.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36They've got to check they fit inside each other.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38They can embellish, they can clarify the gallery.

0:20:38 > 0:20:43We've got to see them really pulling it together at this stage.

0:20:43 > 0:20:44How are you doing?

0:20:44 > 0:20:49I'm doing the galleries and flanges, so I'm adding a bit of clay to the

0:20:49 > 0:20:50base and I removing a bit of clay from the top.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52You are up against it, really, aren't you?

0:20:52 > 0:20:55Yeah, yeah, yeah. I need to have the galleries and flanges done.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57- Yeah.- I've left it...

0:20:57 > 0:20:59That's the main task, isn't it?

0:20:59 > 0:21:01For the potters who already added

0:21:01 > 0:21:04these connecting pieces at the hand building stage...

0:21:04 > 0:21:06It's a bit wet, still.

0:21:06 > 0:21:07I distorted it a bit early on.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10..they now need to begin carefully cutting away

0:21:10 > 0:21:13the clay at the joint to create a perfect seal.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15Just figuring out which way the top went on.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17Obviously, it's going to take a little bit of fiddling.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20Any inaccurate trimming and their pieces

0:21:20 > 0:21:23won't meet and the doll's form will be ruined.

0:21:23 > 0:21:24My dad gave me this tool.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27He made it for me and this creates the recess here.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30It's just like a can-opener, basically.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32Are you quite happy with them fitting together nice?

0:21:32 > 0:21:34They do fit together.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36It fits. OK.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38But even if the dolls do slot together...

0:21:38 > 0:21:40It's in.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43..the constantly drying and shrinking clay

0:21:43 > 0:21:45will need even more trimming...

0:21:45 > 0:21:47Oh, God.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50..to ensure they still fit inside each other.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52Yep.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54Just flattening it so they fit in.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58Cos at the moment they are a bit too tight.

0:21:58 > 0:22:03Having built his tops and bottoms separately from hand-rolled coils...

0:22:05 > 0:22:07..Nam now has a problem.

0:22:07 > 0:22:08- Hi, Nam.- Hi, Sarah.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10How you feeling, bud?

0:22:10 > 0:22:12I'm feeling really stressed at the moment.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15- Yeah?- What's going on?- I don't think my forms are fitting.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17Oh, sweetheart.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19OK, be calm.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21I messed up one, definitely,

0:22:21 > 0:22:23- and it was that one there.- OK, yeah.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24It's affected everything.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27OK, so what you are dealing with here is that basically

0:22:27 > 0:22:29you've messed up with your sizings on one of your pods

0:22:29 > 0:22:32and one of your pods isn't possibly going to fit together that great.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35Yeah? But the other three are good.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37Hopefully, if they all survive the firing,

0:22:37 > 0:22:39the worst that you are looking at is

0:22:39 > 0:22:41- one of them isn't going to fit that perfectly.- Yeah.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43And I reckon you're probably not going to be alone in that.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46Once trimmed and fitted...

0:22:46 > 0:22:47Come off.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50..the potters can finish any surface work.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53That's the little seal.

0:22:53 > 0:22:58These are the ears belonging to the jackal going on.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00It's all a bit higgledy-piggledy.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04My darling doll faces, you've got ten minutes left, OK?

0:23:04 > 0:23:06This is your ten-minute warning.

0:23:06 > 0:23:07That's insane.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12Not super happy with having to rush on the decoration because I would've

0:23:12 > 0:23:14liked to have put a bit more on.

0:23:14 > 0:23:18A fish rising is a symbol of life improving, at least, Ryan.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21OK. Hope my life's improving!

0:23:21 > 0:23:23But then fish out of water is bad luck.

0:23:23 > 0:23:24Oh, right.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26It could go either way.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Oh, so little time left.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37Potters, you've got one minute left.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39All your things need to be in the drying room

0:23:39 > 0:23:41at the end of this minute and I mean it, OK?

0:23:41 > 0:23:42She means it.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46- Are you all right, Cait?- Yeah? - How is this minute

0:23:46 > 0:23:48going to work for you. Are you done?

0:23:48 > 0:23:50I've got a cow and I've got an old woman.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53I've got a dog which may need to be

0:23:53 > 0:23:57done in decorating and I've got a bird

0:23:57 > 0:23:59which will definitely need to be done in decorating.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10OK, you need to start getting your things to the drying room, please.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13Ten, nine,

0:24:13 > 0:24:15eight... Hurry, but calmly.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17.seven, six...

0:24:17 > 0:24:18Flying fish.

0:24:18 > 0:24:23..five, four, three,

0:24:23 > 0:24:25two, one.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27OK, time is up, guys.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30You've got a couple of days' break now, so escape while you can.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32- Thank you very much.- Thank you.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34Cheers, bye.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36That was a disgusting task.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39Drying and firing will take 48 hours.

0:24:41 > 0:24:45And as the heat of the kiln can alter the size of their work...

0:24:45 > 0:24:46The moment of truth.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51..it's been an agonising wait for the potters.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53The biggest issue is that they may not fit.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57I have to decorate as well as I can and look on the positive side.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00Two people are going home and they're going to choose someone

0:25:00 > 0:25:03with the dolls that don't fit into each other.

0:25:04 > 0:25:05Bottom line.

0:25:06 > 0:25:07Faced with reality,

0:25:07 > 0:25:11I'm the one that hasn't won anything in the Throw Down or spot tests

0:25:11 > 0:25:15so far. Haven't won any best Potter Of The Week either, so, yeah,

0:25:15 > 0:25:17I have my suitcase ready.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22The potters now have two hours to do a final check on fitting and then

0:25:22 > 0:25:25glaze their Russian dolls.

0:25:25 > 0:25:26Yay, we have a lid.

0:25:28 > 0:25:32- Oh.- Am I the only one that's got a really loose bottom?

0:25:32 > 0:25:34I can't pick it up on the top.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39Oops, eye just fell off.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41It's not going to fit.

0:25:41 > 0:25:45There was a flaw and it's cost me pretty big.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49Way too small.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51Once there is glaze on that, that's going to be a bit...

0:25:53 > 0:25:54That's not going to fit, really.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57We've got a bit of a tight fit with the lid.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01Should be all right. Just rubbing this round and it'll loosen it up.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05They are pretty loose, but then again, if I make it too tight,

0:26:05 > 0:26:07it may not separate them.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11It's earthenware clay and it's soft

0:26:11 > 0:26:13and it's quite easy to file away the clay.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18I've got my special tool that my dad gave me.

0:26:18 > 0:26:23At this rate I'll spend the full two hours just filing.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25Yeah, I know. Me too.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Filing frantically just to try and get this to fit a little bit

0:26:31 > 0:26:32neater than it is already.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35It's just hitting on the base a bit there.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39Oh. My fin just broke off.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42Richard is the first potter who's ready to decorate.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44These are the sort of colours we'll be going for.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46They'll be a bit brighter, obviously.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48The yellows and blues and reds.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51You know, it'll be a lot more standout.

0:26:51 > 0:26:52When they decorate their dolls,

0:26:52 > 0:26:54they can go quite traditional if they want.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57This is a lovely set of typical Russian dolls

0:26:57 > 0:27:00and the decoration itself, it's all the same.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03It carries right across from top to bottom.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05Here is a quite traditional set.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07There's a lovely continuity between them

0:27:07 > 0:27:08and although they work together,

0:27:08 > 0:27:10each penguin is different.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13They've got two hours, haven't they, to decorate these pieces?

0:27:13 > 0:27:16So were looking for meticulous and precise glaze application here.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19I want to see consistency with the glazing

0:27:19 > 0:27:22and the decorating throughout the whole set.

0:27:22 > 0:27:23Two people are going here.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26They have to get this right. It could be the make or break.

0:27:28 > 0:27:29- Oh, God, this is, like, never-ending.- Yeah.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38Are you going to do a bit of decorating at some point?

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Pop a bit on for the last five minutes?

0:27:40 > 0:27:42- Oh, it's nice, that noise. - Yeah, isn't it?

0:27:42 > 0:27:43It's lovely.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47Yeah, I will do some. I'm getting round to it, Sarah.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50OK. You are going to keep it quite simple design, anyway.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52- I remember you saying. - Yeah, I mean that's...

0:27:52 > 0:27:55Lazy, isn't it?

0:27:56 > 0:28:00The front will be the colour of the animal itself and the back would be

0:28:00 > 0:28:03related to the message I want to send out.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07On the back of the polar bear, it's about global warming, ice melting.

0:28:07 > 0:28:12So the majority will be blue, a bit of green and a watery effect.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15And on the seal, it's about illegal hunting,

0:28:15 > 0:28:18so it'll be really bloody red.

0:28:18 > 0:28:22I want to use the sponge technique to create gradual colour change.

0:28:22 > 0:28:26I'm masking out the area that I don't want the sponge to touch.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31- How is it all going?- Yeah, good.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33One was a little bit tighter than I expected

0:28:33 > 0:28:34so there's going to be a lot

0:28:34 > 0:28:36of oxides on here. I'm going to do blues,

0:28:36 > 0:28:38and I might do each fish a slightly different colour

0:28:38 > 0:28:41and try and highlight some of the textures and the scales

0:28:41 > 0:28:43- and things like that. - What are these, Ryan?

0:28:43 > 0:28:45Are these intentional?

0:28:45 > 0:28:47No, they actually came off when I was putting stuff in,

0:28:47 > 0:28:49- but they needed to come off.- They needed to come off, right, to fit.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51Any tips?

0:28:51 > 0:28:54No. I'm just the judge.

0:28:54 > 0:28:58I've sketched the design just so that I've got a rough idea

0:28:58 > 0:29:01of what it's going to look like on the form,

0:29:01 > 0:29:05but mostly it was so that I know what way they fit together so

0:29:05 > 0:29:09that I can keep track of them and then file accordingly.

0:29:09 > 0:29:11I'm running out of decorating time.

0:29:11 > 0:29:13Just getting rid of clay, basically.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18Potters, you have one hour left.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21Halfway through your time.

0:29:21 > 0:29:24- Way behind.- Yeah, me too.

0:29:24 > 0:29:28Your decorating is a bit less complicated, I think.

0:29:28 > 0:29:30I filed quite a lot down.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32They probably still won't fit.

0:29:32 > 0:29:34Honestly, they probably won't.

0:29:34 > 0:29:36I'm not being negative.

0:29:36 > 0:29:38It's just how it works.

0:29:38 > 0:29:39They just keep moving in the kiln.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42They'll shrink again and change shape, and they just won't fit.

0:29:42 > 0:29:47So, it's best that, like, I just did excess filing, just to avoid that.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54Giving my old woman a bit of a purple rinse.

0:30:01 > 0:30:02You're a dark horse.

0:30:02 > 0:30:04Look at this. I didn't know you could do all this detail.

0:30:04 > 0:30:08This is a little bit darkness that you're sending out.

0:30:08 > 0:30:11Cute little characters there, and the children are like, ah...

0:30:11 > 0:30:13Then you turn it round.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16Need to be supervised by the parents.

0:30:16 > 0:30:17Character-building, that,

0:30:17 > 0:30:20some horror pictures on the other side of cute little animals.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23I haven't done the face yet, and I need to crack on, really.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26- It's nice.- I've spent so much time on the back of it.

0:30:28 > 0:30:31Oh, wow, that looks interesting.

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Yeah, it's a little bit of lace impression, pressing on to my forms.

0:30:35 > 0:30:39Oh, excellent. How are you finding after the biscuit firing?

0:30:39 > 0:30:43I found that one of my pieces doesn't fit into my whole set,

0:30:43 > 0:30:45so I've only got a set of three at the moment.

0:30:45 > 0:30:46It's such a shame.

0:30:46 > 0:30:47How do the other pieces fit together?

0:30:47 > 0:30:50They all actually fit really nicely.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52Well, it's not over till it's over, mate.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54It's all to play for.

0:31:02 > 0:31:03This is just an oxide.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06It's quite a simple sort of, like, stain.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08I just don't want these to be white-white.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14Which animal is this?

0:31:14 > 0:31:15Because I know, in ancient Egypt,

0:31:15 > 0:31:19they looked slightly different to their modern equivalents.

0:31:19 > 0:31:20Yeah, this is the jackal.

0:31:22 > 0:31:26Because it looks quite sort of model kangaroo.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28Absolutely, yeah.

0:31:28 > 0:31:30Jackal, eagle...

0:31:30 > 0:31:31Yeah.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33- Sheep.- Monkey.

0:31:33 > 0:31:34Monkey.

0:31:34 > 0:31:35Monkey. Didn't have sheep.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38My dad's a farmer, and it's terrible

0:31:38 > 0:31:40I can't tell a sheep and a monkey apart.

0:31:47 > 0:31:49Is this a proper thing for doing it with and everything?

0:31:49 > 0:31:52- It's a little blow pot, yeah. - Little blow pot!

0:31:58 > 0:32:00God, look at that! It looks like a murder scene.

0:32:00 > 0:32:01Yeah.

0:32:03 > 0:32:05Are you happy with your decorating here?

0:32:05 > 0:32:08Um, so far, I'm fairly pleased with her,

0:32:08 > 0:32:11but I've got 20 minutes left to do the last three.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13Crack on, Cait.

0:32:13 > 0:32:15Yeah, I need to just get on.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26OK, potters, you've got ten minutes left for this decorating stage.

0:32:26 > 0:32:27At the end of the ten minutes,

0:32:27 > 0:32:29you need to have all your stuff on a ware board, please,

0:32:29 > 0:32:31ready to get down to the kiln.

0:32:38 > 0:32:40I'm on my second of four dolls.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42There's not enough time at all left.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45I'm taking way too long to do them.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48In the final minutes, the potters glaze their dolls,

0:32:48 > 0:32:51either by dipping them in glaze, or painting it on.

0:32:51 > 0:32:54But they must make sure the glaze is properly wiped off the flanges and

0:32:54 > 0:32:59galleries to ensure the thickness of the glaze doesn't alter the fit during firing.

0:32:59 > 0:33:01Potters, you've got two minutes left.

0:33:01 > 0:33:02Oh, my word!

0:33:02 > 0:33:05Cait, you're joking me.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07- Is it OK if I...?- Yeah, do what you've got to do.

0:33:11 > 0:33:16Oh, no! Two minutes and I haven't started with my dolls.

0:33:17 > 0:33:19Spider, spider, spider, spider.

0:33:19 > 0:33:21Potters, you've got 30 seconds now.

0:33:27 > 0:33:34OK, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three,

0:33:34 > 0:33:37two, one...

0:33:37 > 0:33:38Time is up, potters.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41Well done. Get your stuff on your ware boards, please,

0:33:41 > 0:33:42if it's not already on there.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45Do it quickly. And we're going to take all your stuff

0:33:45 > 0:33:47down to the kiln, ready for firing.

0:33:52 > 0:33:53I forgot the cat.

0:33:55 > 0:33:57BLEEP.

0:33:57 > 0:34:03I forgot the cat onto the dog, so part of the rhyme is not there.

0:34:03 > 0:34:05My first three fish fit quite well.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08It's the larger one that sort of lets the piece down a little bit.

0:34:08 > 0:34:10I've stacked them into each other,

0:34:10 > 0:34:13which is the position that they're going to be in, in the end.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16That's just so that they shrink together,

0:34:16 > 0:34:19because I fear that I won't be able to

0:34:19 > 0:34:22get them back in if I fire them all separately.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24Let's hope the bits fit,

0:34:24 > 0:34:27because I've just realised I've glazed the insides of

0:34:27 > 0:34:29- the- BLEEP.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32They've decorated their Russian dolls,

0:34:32 > 0:34:34and they are going for their firing.

0:34:34 > 0:34:36Who do you think is really shining this week?

0:34:36 > 0:34:38Well, Clover.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41At first, she was really struggling with actually making the pieces,

0:34:41 > 0:34:43but then it all seemed to come together.

0:34:43 > 0:34:45And the scale is beautiful.

0:34:45 > 0:34:46I think Ryan's doing pretty well.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49It looks like his galleries fit well.

0:34:49 > 0:34:52I'm really looking forward to seeing the surface design

0:34:52 > 0:34:53over those fish scales.

0:34:53 > 0:34:55I'm a little bit worried about Cait.

0:34:55 > 0:34:59The theme running through the four dolls is such a lovely one.

0:34:59 > 0:35:00She had all the pieces made,

0:35:00 > 0:35:03and she's let herself down at the decorating stage.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05Nam was getting quite confused.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08Some of the sections don't actually fit on top of the other ones.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10And I don't think they fit inside each other.

0:35:10 > 0:35:12Complete chaos.

0:35:12 > 0:35:13Who else could be going?

0:35:13 > 0:35:15Well, it's Freya. The design was good,

0:35:15 > 0:35:17the idea of this tongue - brilliant.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19You know, but I'm just worried

0:35:19 > 0:35:21she's just losing it by not planning properly.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24She's firing them all together, one inside the other.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26I think it's very risky.

0:35:27 > 0:35:30As the Russian dolls enter the kiln,

0:35:30 > 0:35:33we're heading south for the potters' last chance to impress the judges

0:35:33 > 0:35:36with a Spot Test all the way from Italy.

0:35:36 > 0:35:41The judges would like you to try your hand at a spot of sgraffito,

0:35:41 > 0:35:44which is not, apparently, a fancy, frothy coffee.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47It's sort of like graffiti for ceramics, if you will.

0:35:47 > 0:35:53Now, lurking underneath your hessian, you will each have an urn.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56It's leather hard, it's covered in black slip

0:35:56 > 0:36:00and ready for you to sgraffito to your heart's content.

0:36:00 > 0:36:02Essentially, you'll be carving through

0:36:02 > 0:36:05the black slip to reveal the white clay underneath.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09We want to see a well-considered repeat pattern,

0:36:09 > 0:36:11covering the entire surface of your urns.

0:36:11 > 0:36:16You want to be precise and decisive with your tools.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19You've got an hour and a half to sgraffito your urns.

0:36:19 > 0:36:21Your time starts now.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35I've done a fair bit of sgraffito work,

0:36:35 > 0:36:37so what I shall probably do is

0:36:37 > 0:36:40get the inspiration from the 17th century

0:36:40 > 0:36:43and do a stylised 17th-century flower.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47First time sgraffitoing today,

0:36:47 > 0:36:51so I'm just sort of actually learning at the same time.

0:36:51 > 0:36:52I've planned a floral design.

0:36:52 > 0:36:56I'm just sort of adding them in as I go right now.

0:36:58 > 0:37:01I've never done sgraffito on pottery before.

0:37:01 > 0:37:05They want quite an intricate piece that fits into itself,

0:37:05 > 0:37:07and what better shape than a puzzle?

0:37:07 > 0:37:10I need to perform better in my spot tests.

0:37:10 > 0:37:12It's the week where two people are going,

0:37:12 > 0:37:14and you need to impress or you're going home.

0:37:15 > 0:37:18So, the word sgraffito essentially means

0:37:18 > 0:37:21scratching through from one surface to reveal another.

0:37:21 > 0:37:25You're carving, scratching, engraving it, but essentially,

0:37:25 > 0:37:28you're peeling away a pattern.

0:37:28 > 0:37:29This is my design.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32There's going to be some floral things going on.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36Triangles, a bit of waves, borders, lots of borders.

0:37:36 > 0:37:39I'll add more and more detail as I go.

0:37:39 > 0:37:41I've gone for a skyline,

0:37:41 > 0:37:44because I thought that would lend itself nicely

0:37:44 > 0:37:48to sort of dark, light, silhouettes. I mean, it's going all right so far.

0:37:50 > 0:37:51Keep focused.

0:37:51 > 0:37:55Because I thought that before, and then it's fallen apart.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59Oh...

0:37:59 > 0:38:03Gouged in. See, this isn't 100% even, so there's little gouges,

0:38:03 > 0:38:05and it just got caught on an uneven...

0:38:05 > 0:38:09There we go. So, now, I'm going to have to make a feature out of that.

0:38:09 > 0:38:11Work with it, work with it.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25It needs to be a repeated pattern,

0:38:25 > 0:38:27because otherwise I would have put a dragon around it.

0:38:27 > 0:38:30So, I changed my design to peacock feather,

0:38:30 > 0:38:34and then it's large and nice but could put a lot of detail in it,

0:38:34 > 0:38:37so I'm trying to achieve that.

0:38:39 > 0:38:40Hello, Clover. Hello.

0:38:40 > 0:38:42- Hello.- How are you doing?

0:38:42 > 0:38:45- Are you all right?- Yeah, I don't know what graffiti is.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48I don't know whether I should carve it, I should not carve...

0:38:48 > 0:38:50I've got no idea what the right thing to do is.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52You're obviously doing OK.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54Watch things like this, though.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57- Yeah.- We don't want to see that. I don't know how you're going to

0:38:57 > 0:38:59- repair that but you need to look at it.- Yeah.

0:39:01 > 0:39:05This could be a few of our last ever spot tests today, so...

0:39:06 > 0:39:08..I think we're all trying to

0:39:08 > 0:39:10impress the judges as much as possible.

0:39:13 > 0:39:15- Hi, Ryan.- Hi, guys.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17- How are you getting on? - I'm all right.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20It's such a weird process, but it's really nice, scratching away.

0:39:20 > 0:39:21Yeah, it's a lovely feeling.

0:39:21 > 0:39:23You don't really get second chances, do you, at all?

0:39:23 > 0:39:26- No.- You have to be really confident with the mark straightaway.

0:39:26 > 0:39:29- Yeah.- You need to really think about the intricacy of this.

0:39:29 > 0:39:32- Right.- You know, you're laying down a big pattern with, like,

0:39:32 > 0:39:34a full repeat.

0:39:34 > 0:39:36How was your spacing? Let's have a look.

0:39:36 > 0:39:37One, two,

0:39:37 > 0:39:40three. Yeah.

0:39:40 > 0:39:42- Great, Ryan.- Thank you. - Thanks a lot.- Cheers.

0:39:42 > 0:39:46Feeling a bit stuck, to be honest. I was so pleased with myself,

0:39:46 > 0:39:50and then when I heard them talking to one of the others I was like,

0:39:50 > 0:39:53"Oh, I forgot the repeat pattern part! No!"

0:39:53 > 0:39:54How do I make this repeat?

0:40:07 > 0:40:08Have I seen this pattern before?

0:40:08 > 0:40:12- You might have.- I've seen it a few times before.

0:40:12 > 0:40:15- Possibly.- Is it possibly a 17th-century pattern?

0:40:15 > 0:40:17There's every chance.

0:40:17 > 0:40:19OK.

0:40:19 > 0:40:22- Well, just make sure you execute it really, really well.- Yeah.

0:40:25 > 0:40:28Ooh! I'll put all three of them on top of each other, can't I?

0:40:28 > 0:40:31I've basically got three areas on my pot,

0:40:31 > 0:40:35so if I redraw all three of them on each of the areas,

0:40:35 > 0:40:37I'll have a repeat pattern.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48So, I'm going to start to carve off some

0:40:48 > 0:40:50and create the negative side of the puzzle,

0:40:50 > 0:40:54just to give it more...of a puzzle.

0:40:55 > 0:40:57This is amazing. I love this tool.

0:40:57 > 0:40:59Gosh!

0:41:02 > 0:41:06Potters, you're halfway through your time. 45 minutes to go.

0:41:06 > 0:41:09Got plenty of time to refine the...

0:41:09 > 0:41:10The forms now.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13Has anyone else made a mistake?

0:41:13 > 0:41:14Oh, yeah.

0:41:14 > 0:41:16- Plenty.- Yeah.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18I forgot the brief.

0:41:18 > 0:41:19First mistake.

0:41:19 > 0:41:21I feel really stupid.

0:41:23 > 0:41:26Because, for the time I've used to fix my dents,

0:41:26 > 0:41:28I could have made better use of it.

0:41:28 > 0:41:32Do not make the same mistakes as I do, guys.

0:41:36 > 0:41:37Rim is fixed.

0:41:37 > 0:41:40Do not dent it again, Clover!

0:41:43 > 0:41:44Richard, nice flowers.

0:41:44 > 0:41:46Thank you very much.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49Can't wait till all this is over and me and you can skip hand in hand

0:41:49 > 0:41:51gaily through a meadow.

0:41:51 > 0:41:53Well, that's a very nice offer,

0:41:53 > 0:41:56but I think I might have somebody at home who will have something to say

0:41:56 > 0:41:57- about that.- OK.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59So I'm going to have to turn you down.

0:41:59 > 0:42:01It was a platonic skip through a meadow!

0:42:01 > 0:42:03Well, in that case, I'm all for it.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11Ten minutes, guys. Ten minutes left.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27Came last on the Throw Down challenges,

0:42:27 > 0:42:30so I'm just trying to get

0:42:30 > 0:42:34as complicated a pattern as possible.

0:42:34 > 0:42:35I think I've done everything I can,

0:42:35 > 0:42:39but whether that enough is a different story.

0:42:39 > 0:42:40Potters, you've got one minute left.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42At the end of this minute, it is tools down.

0:42:49 > 0:42:57Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four,

0:42:57 > 0:43:03three, two, one. Tools down, please, potters.

0:43:03 > 0:43:04Tools down.

0:43:04 > 0:43:06Well done. Lovely Spot Test.

0:43:06 > 0:43:07Some gorgeous urns here.

0:43:07 > 0:43:09Well done. Right, if you'd like to bring them up

0:43:09 > 0:43:10to the front for judging, please.

0:43:10 > 0:43:12Bring them on your whirlers.

0:43:12 > 0:43:15Oh, a jigsaw puzzle!

0:43:15 > 0:43:16Oh! Clever.

0:43:16 > 0:43:21Keith and Kate are expecting precise and considered sgraffito work

0:43:21 > 0:43:25in a repeating pattern that covers the whole urn.

0:43:26 > 0:43:30Cait, it looks a bit simplistic for an hour and a half.

0:43:30 > 0:43:34Because you've done that very iconic sort of tower shape,

0:43:34 > 0:43:37and then you've managed to repeat that around the pot.

0:43:37 > 0:43:41You can have a simple design but we're looking for intricate as well.

0:43:41 > 0:43:43- Richard's.- I'd just like to see something extra,

0:43:43 > 0:43:45because I've seen you do this pattern.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47Show us what you are good at,

0:43:47 > 0:43:51but then show us something more each time if you are going to do that.

0:43:51 > 0:43:54- Nam?- I'm not sure about whether you planned

0:43:54 > 0:43:57to have a smaller section carved out here.

0:43:57 > 0:44:00You know, we were looking for a repeat that was planned well,

0:44:00 > 0:44:03and I'd have loved to have seen that missing jigsaw puzzle

0:44:03 > 0:44:05being the same size as the others.

0:44:05 > 0:44:07Freya's.

0:44:07 > 0:44:08It's a bit of a mess, really, isn't it?

0:44:08 > 0:44:12I don't feel that it's got a concise, decided design.

0:44:12 > 0:44:13I think it kind of happened.

0:44:14 > 0:44:17Ryan's. What I particularly like about this, Ryan,

0:44:17 > 0:44:20is that you've used the tool to create depth.

0:44:20 > 0:44:23I think it's really bold, really nice use of repeat.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27This is Clover's, isn't it?

0:44:27 > 0:44:29I did notice that you had a little mark before,

0:44:29 > 0:44:31so you've incorporated it.

0:44:31 > 0:44:34- Yes.- And I think you've incorporated it very well.

0:44:34 > 0:44:35And it's a lovely repeat.

0:44:35 > 0:44:39Yes, you've gone above and beyond the call of duty there, really.

0:44:39 > 0:44:40Thank you.

0:44:41 > 0:44:44But who's sgraffito has revealed the creativity

0:44:44 > 0:44:46and touch of a master potter?

0:44:46 > 0:44:48In sixth place is...

0:44:50 > 0:44:51..this one. Freya.

0:44:51 > 0:44:56Bit of a mess. Some of the tooling marks just weren't defined enough.

0:44:56 > 0:45:01Cait is fifth, Richard's the fourth and Nam is third.

0:45:01 > 0:45:03In second place is...

0:45:05 > 0:45:07..Ryan. Really nice use of the tool.

0:45:07 > 0:45:11You've got some depth in there and nice coverage of the pot.

0:45:11 > 0:45:15- Really well done.- And that means that in first place,

0:45:15 > 0:45:17for the first time for a Spot Test...

0:45:17 > 0:45:20- Finally!- ..is Clover.

0:45:20 > 0:45:24- Thank you. Thank you, guys. - Well done, Clover.

0:45:24 > 0:45:26Lovely, bold design.

0:45:26 > 0:45:29Like the way from your accident that it came up over onto the top.

0:45:29 > 0:45:31It just works beautifully.

0:45:31 > 0:45:33Thank you.

0:45:33 > 0:45:34Finally won something!

0:45:34 > 0:45:36Yay!

0:45:36 > 0:45:38First taste of victory.

0:45:38 > 0:45:39Nice.

0:45:39 > 0:45:41I told you!

0:45:41 > 0:45:43Really, really relieved I came second.

0:45:43 > 0:45:45I believe I'm still in trouble, even finishing in third.

0:45:45 > 0:45:48First would have helped me a bit.

0:45:48 > 0:45:49I'm a sgraffito artist.

0:45:49 > 0:45:51I'm miffed by that comment, really.

0:45:51 > 0:45:54If they want something different, they should say.

0:45:54 > 0:45:55Obviously quite disappointed.

0:45:55 > 0:45:59I mean, it's a competition and if you come last, you get kicked out.

0:45:59 > 0:46:02We're going to go from being six to four.

0:46:03 > 0:46:05I'm in danger of being one of them.

0:46:05 > 0:46:07At least if I go, I'll have company?

0:46:14 > 0:46:15It's Judgment Day.

0:46:15 > 0:46:17The potters are about to discover

0:46:17 > 0:46:21how the Russian dolls have fared in the final firing.

0:46:21 > 0:46:23- ALL:- Ooooh!

0:46:25 > 0:46:27They look fantastic.

0:46:27 > 0:46:29They're still warm!

0:46:29 > 0:46:32All your bits and pieces are strewn around the base of them.

0:46:32 > 0:46:35- Cool.- God, heavier than they were before.- Good luck.

0:46:35 > 0:46:37Thank you.

0:46:44 > 0:46:46For two of these potters,

0:46:46 > 0:46:49this is the last time they'll be presenting to the judges.

0:46:55 > 0:46:57Ryan, please bring your Russian dolls.

0:46:57 > 0:46:58Steady, Ryan!

0:46:58 > 0:47:00Very carefully.

0:47:02 > 0:47:04Well done. Thank you very much.

0:47:04 > 0:47:05Thank you.

0:47:18 > 0:47:20It's a nice idea.

0:47:20 > 0:47:22The colours are good.

0:47:22 > 0:47:25I sort of feel if you'd shaved a few centimetres

0:47:25 > 0:47:26off the bottom of each one,

0:47:26 > 0:47:28it still would have had the same message

0:47:28 > 0:47:30and they would have been a more stable shape.

0:47:30 > 0:47:33I'm a bit worried about the stability of that.

0:47:33 > 0:47:35I know you lost a few of your fins, but obviously,

0:47:35 > 0:47:38if you're stacking things inside each other,

0:47:38 > 0:47:41the three inner ones really have to be quite streamlined

0:47:41 > 0:47:43and slither like a fish into each other.

0:47:43 > 0:47:45Yeah, let's see, Kate.

0:47:50 > 0:47:54So again, I think the design could have been so much better executed.

0:47:56 > 0:47:59I mean, it kind of wants to but it's not quite there.

0:47:59 > 0:48:00I know. It's so close.

0:48:00 > 0:48:02Here we go.

0:48:02 > 0:48:04Oh! You know, if I owned this,

0:48:04 > 0:48:07I'd worry that I'd be knocking off the scales when it was going in.

0:48:11 > 0:48:13This one's already been filleted, I think.

0:48:19 > 0:48:22The woman who swallowed the horse, the cow that swallowed the goat.

0:48:22 > 0:48:25The dog didn't swallow anything.

0:48:25 > 0:48:27- Why is the cat missing? - Time got away from me.

0:48:27 > 0:48:29If you're going to think of

0:48:29 > 0:48:31a design concept that is as strong as this,

0:48:31 > 0:48:33follow it through, eh?

0:48:33 > 0:48:34Right, OK, here we go.

0:48:34 > 0:48:36No, I won't sing.

0:48:39 > 0:48:41I have to say, on a real positive,

0:48:41 > 0:48:44the gallery and the flanges worked really, really well.

0:48:44 > 0:48:46Don't forget the cat next time.

0:48:46 > 0:48:48Poor cat!

0:48:59 > 0:49:03I have to say, Clover, it's wonderful.

0:49:03 > 0:49:06Small can be beautiful and very, very powerful

0:49:06 > 0:49:08and very, very effective.

0:49:08 > 0:49:10- Thank you.- It's great.

0:49:10 > 0:49:14- Thank you.- This is why I'm here is to see something like this

0:49:14 > 0:49:16presented to us because I'm...

0:49:17 > 0:49:20I don't want to get emotional at all, but really,

0:49:20 > 0:49:22there's a beautiful message.

0:49:22 > 0:49:24There's a charm, there's a seriousness,

0:49:24 > 0:49:28there's a depth and the use of the clay is exquisite.

0:49:28 > 0:49:31- Let's have a look, just to see if they together.- Yeah.

0:49:33 > 0:49:35I hope they do! This one.

0:49:35 > 0:49:37Yes!

0:49:38 > 0:49:40I knew these two was a bit tight.

0:49:44 > 0:49:46- Well done, lovey.- Thank you.

0:49:46 > 0:49:48- Well done.- Can I just take it and run now?

0:49:58 > 0:49:59You've got this one that stands out

0:49:59 > 0:50:02from all the rest which I quite like.

0:50:02 > 0:50:06The gallery and flange is kind of non-existent.

0:50:08 > 0:50:10I think that's right.

0:50:10 > 0:50:12If your lids don't fit properly,

0:50:12 > 0:50:14I would have expected to see the

0:50:14 > 0:50:16pattern indicating to me exactly where it

0:50:16 > 0:50:18was going to fit. Right.

0:50:19 > 0:50:21No, that one doesn't... That's not going to fit.

0:50:21 > 0:50:22That's not going to fit. OK.

0:50:22 > 0:50:24So it's got to go in the big one.

0:50:24 > 0:50:25- Does that fit in there?- No.

0:50:25 > 0:50:27No, right, that's completely out.

0:50:36 > 0:50:39Obviously wasn't your day or your challenge.

0:50:49 > 0:50:53The decoration is quite fine with your hieroglyphics on the front.

0:50:53 > 0:50:56The man is rather lovely and funny, the baboon.

0:50:56 > 0:50:59- What was this one?- The hawk.

0:50:59 > 0:51:01Doesn't look like a hawk. What's this one?

0:51:01 > 0:51:03- This is...- Kangaroo?- A jackal.

0:51:03 > 0:51:07- It's a jackal.- If you're going to do a lid, you've got a gallery,

0:51:07 > 0:51:09you've got the flange, it's got to fit.

0:51:09 > 0:51:11- Yeah.- It's got to fit.

0:51:11 > 0:51:14Was it necessary to glaze that bit?

0:51:14 > 0:51:15Well, I wouldn't have glazed it.

0:51:15 > 0:51:19- Right.- I'd have wiped it, but...

0:51:20 > 0:51:22You didn't.

0:51:22 > 0:51:25Let's see if they fit. This one.

0:51:27 > 0:51:29Well, it's all a bit heavy and slippery.

0:51:30 > 0:51:33But it does fit, Richard.

0:51:34 > 0:51:36Is that stopping that?

0:51:36 > 0:51:38It's just a bad fit on the lid.

0:51:38 > 0:51:41- It's the lid itself?- Yeah, because it's glazed on the inside and out.

0:51:41 > 0:51:43It's not a brilliant fit, is it?

0:51:43 > 0:51:45- No.- No, no.

0:51:45 > 0:51:47Have to do a side walk.

0:51:47 > 0:51:48Side walk.

0:52:01 > 0:52:05The design does cross all four pieces.

0:52:05 > 0:52:07And I have to say, Freya, this is

0:52:07 > 0:52:11the best use of the materials I've ever seen you do.

0:52:11 > 0:52:12This is fantastic.

0:52:12 > 0:52:14It seems to me that the design was great

0:52:14 > 0:52:16but it was a missed opportunity

0:52:16 > 0:52:18and you could have decorated them so much better

0:52:18 > 0:52:20within the time that you were given.

0:52:23 > 0:52:25This first fit was nice.

0:52:26 > 0:52:28And you know exactly where they've got to go.

0:52:28 > 0:52:31That's what's so lovely, is your design carries and instructs you

0:52:31 > 0:52:34what to do at each stage.

0:52:34 > 0:52:35Really like the design.

0:52:37 > 0:52:39Let's have a look at it.

0:52:39 > 0:52:43It's absolutely original, it's really, really clever.

0:52:43 > 0:52:47It just is missing that last 10% in the decoration.

0:52:51 > 0:52:55So, only four of you will be going through to the semifinals and two of

0:52:55 > 0:52:57you will be leaving the pottery,

0:52:57 > 0:52:59so the judges have got a lot to think about.

0:53:01 > 0:53:03The judging went down fairly as I expected.

0:53:03 > 0:53:05They tried to see some positives in it,

0:53:05 > 0:53:07but I think I know what the judges saw in my work.

0:53:07 > 0:53:10Obviously, looking at the criteria,

0:53:10 > 0:53:13I think that probably says quite a lot.

0:53:13 > 0:53:16We've got four that are complete sets because

0:53:16 > 0:53:20you can't see the others and we've got two that aren't.

0:53:21 > 0:53:23Just saying!

0:53:23 > 0:53:26I know the mistakes I made and the judges picked up on them.

0:53:26 > 0:53:28You know, they can see it as well and I can see it, so...

0:53:28 > 0:53:30You know, we can only present what we have.

0:53:30 > 0:53:34And this will be the last time the six of us will be together,

0:53:34 > 0:53:36but we've formed an incredible friendship

0:53:36 > 0:53:38and it's a lasting friendship for

0:53:38 > 0:53:40the rest of my life.

0:53:40 > 0:53:43I will be proud to be with you all.

0:53:43 > 0:53:44- ALL:- Aw!

0:53:45 > 0:53:46Rich!

0:53:48 > 0:53:51Let's talk about the good stuff first.

0:53:51 > 0:53:53Who is in contention for Pot Of The Week?

0:53:53 > 0:53:56One of them is Clover.

0:53:56 > 0:53:58Now, Keith, were you furious? Because obviously,

0:53:58 > 0:54:01you've trademarked the whole crying thing

0:54:01 > 0:54:03and then lady here tried to get in on the act.

0:54:03 > 0:54:04Why were you so emotional?

0:54:04 > 0:54:08It was just to see her struggle and then get on top of it and then do it

0:54:08 > 0:54:10and just to see such talent shining

0:54:10 > 0:54:14right there in front of us with such a beautiful story.

0:54:14 > 0:54:16Freya's design is fabulous.

0:54:16 > 0:54:20That mouth and those four lips, perfectly in alignment.

0:54:20 > 0:54:22Really great design skill.

0:54:22 > 0:54:25Have you found it really difficult deciding who could be going?

0:54:25 > 0:54:28There are three people and the first to look at is Ryan.

0:54:28 > 0:54:31You know, his lid did not fit.

0:54:31 > 0:54:35And all those little appendages just didn't really fit together.

0:54:35 > 0:54:37Nam really struggled with the main make.

0:54:37 > 0:54:40One of the dolls just didn't fit at all.

0:54:40 > 0:54:43They look more like bowls than anything else.

0:54:43 > 0:54:46Who else is in danger of not making it through to the semis?

0:54:46 > 0:54:48It was Cait and her timekeeping, wasn't it?

0:54:48 > 0:54:51My God, she spent ages on the largest doll

0:54:51 > 0:54:53and then she rushed the others.

0:54:53 > 0:54:55She had the same time as everyone else

0:54:55 > 0:54:57and I'm annoyed that she didn't finish it.

0:54:57 > 0:55:00Are you ready to go through and tell them your final decision?

0:55:00 > 0:55:03I think we're nearly there. Just a bit more discussion.

0:55:03 > 0:55:05OK. I'll get the kettle on, then.

0:55:21 > 0:55:23Potters, the judges have made their decisions.

0:55:23 > 0:55:26We're going to start with the happy bit first.

0:55:26 > 0:55:28- Pot Of The Week.- And it is happy.

0:55:28 > 0:55:32I'm really happy to say today that the Pot Of The Week,

0:55:32 > 0:55:35with greater narrative skill, with a very,

0:55:35 > 0:55:38very strong message and sheer charm

0:55:38 > 0:55:40is Clover's.

0:55:40 > 0:55:42- Hey, well done.- Thank you, Clover.

0:55:44 > 0:55:47And now onto the less happy part.

0:55:49 > 0:55:52The first person leaving the pottery is...

0:55:59 > 0:56:00..Nam.

0:56:03 > 0:56:04Sorry to see you go, Nam.

0:56:04 > 0:56:07The second person

0:56:07 > 0:56:09leaving the pottery is...

0:56:12 > 0:56:13..Cait.

0:56:15 > 0:56:16Two such lovely people.

0:56:16 > 0:56:18- Yes.- We're going to really miss you.

0:56:18 > 0:56:21I hope to see you again, you know, all of you.

0:56:23 > 0:56:25I feel I went because my design didn't work.

0:56:25 > 0:56:27They weren't actually Russian dolls.

0:56:27 > 0:56:29The judges were right.

0:56:29 > 0:56:32There's going to be a big gap in that studio.

0:56:32 > 0:56:33You know.

0:56:33 > 0:56:34Isn't there, really?

0:56:34 > 0:56:37- You know...- It's tough, it's tough.

0:56:37 > 0:56:40I'm going to... I'm going to miss it all.

0:56:40 > 0:56:45I'm going to... I'm going to miss all the people, the setting.

0:56:45 > 0:56:48Yeah, I mean, the whole experience, it's been amazing.

0:56:48 > 0:56:53Now, lad, the reason why you're still in is because you did so well

0:56:53 > 0:56:55in the Spot Test and the Throw Down.

0:56:55 > 0:56:57- OK?- Right.

0:56:57 > 0:56:59All right? So we need to see more from you.

0:57:01 > 0:57:04You know, we're losing two amazing members of the team.

0:57:04 > 0:57:06This is the semifinal. I should be up and down going,

0:57:06 > 0:57:08"Yes, I'm in the semifinal," sort of thing,

0:57:08 > 0:57:13but... You know, it's that tinge of sadness that, you know,

0:57:13 > 0:57:15people are having to go home.

0:57:18 > 0:57:20'Luckily, some magic happened.'

0:57:20 > 0:57:24I've managed to find my inner peace and carry on, and towards the second

0:57:24 > 0:57:27half of the week has been quite successful.

0:57:27 > 0:57:30Clover's Russian dolls are the sixth stunning exhibit

0:57:30 > 0:57:32in our Pot Of The Week gallery.

0:57:32 > 0:57:36I feel quite scared at being in the semifinal with Freya,

0:57:36 > 0:57:38Ryan and Richard.

0:57:38 > 0:57:43They are just so talented and great potters and just a bit scary.

0:57:43 > 0:57:47And that stress plays on your mind and makes you do crazy things.

0:57:47 > 0:57:49If we make a mistake, we're gone.

0:57:49 > 0:57:51Next time...

0:57:51 > 0:57:55The semifinalists face a huge main make...

0:57:55 > 0:57:57- It's massive! - ..for the smallest room.

0:57:57 > 0:57:59Good U-bend, Ryan.
