0:00:02 > 0:00:03To me, keep going.

0:00:03 > 0:00:05To me, to me.

0:00:05 > 0:00:07Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa.

0:00:07 > 0:00:08Nice one, Denise, thank you, love.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11Look at this, an actual mountain of clay.

0:00:11 > 0:00:15Well, it is the semifinals, after all, and over the next four days,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17our four potters will be lifting,

0:00:17 > 0:00:20squishing and moulding this into something that none of us

0:00:20 > 0:00:21can do without.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24I am bursting with anticipation.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Welcome to The Great Pottery Throw Down.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Last time...

0:00:28 > 0:00:30SHE GROANS

0:00:30 > 0:00:32..Clover's exquisite Russian dolls

0:00:32 > 0:00:35finally saw her work enter the Pot Of The Week gallery.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Luckily some magic happened,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39I have managed to find my inner peace.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41But we had to say goodbye to Nam...

0:00:41 > 0:00:42I'm getting worried now.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45..and Cait as Ryan only just managed to cling onto

0:00:45 > 0:00:47his place in the competition.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49- Now, lad.- I know.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Now four brilliant potters remain...

0:00:53 > 0:00:56Squidge it, squidge it, squidge it.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00..all of them previous winners of Pot Of The Week.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03But which of them can handle a throw-down set by a mystery guest..

0:01:03 > 0:01:05THEY CHEER

0:01:05 > 0:01:07..that's the fastest ever set...

0:01:07 > 0:01:08Pull the handle, come on.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12- It's got a hole in it.- ..a spot test where anything could happen...

0:01:12 > 0:01:15- It's very scary. - ..and a huge Main Make...

0:01:15 > 0:01:17- Tell us where you want it. - It's massive!

0:01:17 > 0:01:20..that could see one of these semifinalists flushed away?

0:01:28 > 0:01:31# Making time

0:01:31 > 0:01:33# Shootin' lines

0:01:34 > 0:01:37# People have their uses

0:01:37 > 0:01:41# People have their uses... #

0:01:59 > 0:02:03I never thought I would be in the semifinals, I'm very scared.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05In my dreams I've wanted to come this far,

0:02:05 > 0:02:08I've been visualising it a little bit.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10The judging is going to be fanatical, I think.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13I need to pay attention to every kind of detail.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15The finals, then, it's in the grass.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18This is what we want, really, at the end of the day.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Good morning, potters. ALL: Good morning.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22I'm not going to lie,

0:02:22 > 0:02:25I'm flushed with excitement about this week's Main Make because Kate

0:02:25 > 0:02:29and Keith would like you to build...a toilet.

0:02:29 > 0:02:30Beautiful!

0:02:30 > 0:02:33This is the most clay we've ever given you.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35It's a really big build.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40It can be any shape or design, but it's got to work as a toilet.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42You have got four hours.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Potters, get potting.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48In this first stage of the Main Make,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51the potters must handcraft all the components

0:02:51 > 0:02:54of their toilet and get them ready to begin drying.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58I've never done a toilet before, so I'm learning on the job here.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01There's a lot of technical factors that can go wrong quite quickly,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03so it's quite an exciting challenge.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06It's an ultimate handbuild, actually.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08There's all sorts of skills that they've got to show us.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11The potters are going to have to build four component parts and then

0:03:11 > 0:03:14join them together. They've got the pedestal, they've got the bowl,

0:03:14 > 0:03:15they've got the rim and U-bend.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19You really have to grasp the actual practicalities of this.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22It sounds so simple, but you have to get that engineering.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25There's so many different joins here and they're very structural joins.

0:03:25 > 0:03:26When you sit on a toilet,

0:03:26 > 0:03:29you don't want anything wonky or leaning, do you?

0:03:29 > 0:03:32And you don't want great overhangs where you're going to be worried

0:03:32 > 0:03:34that your weight might even break it.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36It's a design classic in its structure.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40The reason why the toilet hasn't really changed much in shape and

0:03:40 > 0:03:43form over many, many years is because it actually works.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45It's what they do to it after that,

0:03:45 > 0:03:48whether they build appendages onto these things,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51they want to get their own kind of personality across in these.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54This is handmade, they don't have to make it look like the loo that we

0:03:54 > 0:03:57know and love and use every day.

0:03:57 > 0:03:58At the end of this epic make,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01the judges will sit on the potters' work...

0:04:03 > 0:04:04..to ensure its build quality.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08Ah! Who's going to sit on it? Good luck to them.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11And the toilets will be plumbed in and flushed.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14This is unbelievably difficult.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18Not only to build, but to get it to function is going to be... Yeah.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21For their toughest handbuild yet, the potters will be using one of

0:04:21 > 0:04:25ceramic's strongest clays, tandoor.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27I've never used tandoor clay before.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29It feels a bit like cement.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33And, yes, it is the same tough clay used to build the ovens you get naan

0:04:33 > 0:04:37- bread from.- It feels like it's full of stones, very coarse,

0:04:37 > 0:04:40which means it's going to be really good for holding the structure.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42All the textures in it, it's so nice.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44It's actually going to go quite well with my theme.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46I'm actually making a turtle toilet.

0:04:46 > 0:04:51Ryan is building his turtle toilet from large, thin slabs of tandoor.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54It'll have fins attached to the sides of the bowl and when you sit

0:04:54 > 0:04:57on it, the turtle's head will peep out between your legs.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00When you're a little kid and you're scared of the big toilet and you're

0:05:00 > 0:05:04going from potty training to something else, I'm trying to make it a bit more friendly for children.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07- So, what section is this?- This is actually now going to be my plinth.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10I've made some formers and I'm going to wrap this round because I want it

0:05:10 > 0:05:12- as strong as possible.- It's quite thin, isn't it?

0:05:12 > 0:05:14- I can feel it thin here. - On that edge, yes.

0:05:16 > 0:05:17Rather than using slabs...

0:05:17 > 0:05:21I keep reminding myself this coiling should be the same as the small Russian dolls.

0:05:21 > 0:05:26..hoping for a stronger plinth, Clover is constructing with coils.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30I've got a bucket as the part of the toilet which I'm going to build

0:05:30 > 0:05:33first because I want the support to be quite dry

0:05:33 > 0:05:37and I'm making the wall quite thick. I'm not a very good builder.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40I never played with those builder toys when I was little.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42I played with dollies.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Clover's hand-coiled plinth and bowl will eventually be carved and

0:05:45 > 0:05:49decorated with a stained-glass window design in a bid to turn a

0:05:49 > 0:05:52visit to the smallest room into a religious experience.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55You almost need a sound effect when you sit on it like...

0:05:55 > 0:05:57# Ah, ah, ah... #

0:05:57 > 0:05:58Heavenly angels.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01I think so. That usually happens anyway when I sit on a toilet.

0:06:01 > 0:06:02Dear me.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06But this surface is actually a lot rougher than I thought it would be,

0:06:06 > 0:06:09so I need to figure out how I'm going to make it smooth so when I

0:06:09 > 0:06:11colour it, it's going to be nicer.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Look at your former, Clover, look at how you're going to get that out.

0:06:14 > 0:06:15It's got this lip here.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18I don't know if the lip is at the bottom, but you've got to think.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22- Yeah.- It's all very well using a former and building clay around it,

0:06:22 > 0:06:26but then you've got to think, "I've got to get the former out."

0:06:26 > 0:06:29As well as using formers for the plinth,

0:06:29 > 0:06:32the wider toilet bowl will need even more support

0:06:32 > 0:06:36and for that, Richard turned to his partner Charlotte.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38Her ladyship didn't want me to use her brand-new,

0:06:38 > 0:06:43nonstick wok which I thought was very unfair of her.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46The old wok they found at the back of the kitchen cupboard

0:06:46 > 0:06:49will support the base of Richard's coiled bowl, which,

0:06:49 > 0:06:50along with his plinth,

0:06:50 > 0:06:53will be decorated with an idyllic country scene of a meadow,

0:06:53 > 0:06:56filled with flowers and butterflies.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00My plan is like a Victorian time, where the decoration goes inside

0:07:00 > 0:07:02the toilet, and that really appeals to me.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06When you're stood having a pee, you've got something to look at.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09The beauty is taken right the way round the whole item.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11Every time we come to your workbench,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13I always wonder what era he's going

0:07:13 > 0:07:15- to be talking about. - Like Doctor Who.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18You're like the Doctor Who of pottery.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22While Richard rolls back the years with his ancient wok...

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Ryan's like, wrapping a Christmas present.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27It's the moment of truth for Clover's mop bucket.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34And if the bucket's lips prevent her from removing it...

0:07:36 > 0:07:38..she'll have to start her plinth again.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Woohoo! It's out!

0:07:47 > 0:07:49Panic over.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51It's not a panic that Freya will face

0:07:51 > 0:07:53for the components of her toilet.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56I'm not using a former to build the bowl

0:07:56 > 0:07:59because my shapes are quite organic-y.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Despite hand coiling free from formers,

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Freya's design is hugely complicated.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07She has meticulously planned a Victorian tribute

0:08:07 > 0:08:11to Mother Nature with a bowl circled by abstract female forms

0:08:11 > 0:08:13and a plinth with an intricate relief pattern.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16There's a plan, Freya?

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- Oh, is it Freya we're talking to?- Yeah.- Oh, yes.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20I always have a plan!

0:08:20 > 0:08:24I've decided to take early Victorian as a reference.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Yes, I heard that Richard is doing it.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29And there's lots of floral,

0:08:29 > 0:08:32luscious, juicy vegetation.

0:08:32 > 0:08:33These are almost like roots.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35It does look like a tree,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37but there's a great sense of three women

0:08:37 > 0:08:39and this is like a woman's dress.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43- It's fascinating.- It's all about the intense relief in the detail.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45The intense relief of the toilet!

0:08:45 > 0:08:47Yeah, yeah.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49- You made a pun, Freya.- Oh, did I?

0:08:49 > 0:08:50THEY LAUGH

0:08:50 > 0:08:53OK, potters, halfway through your time.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Just so you know, you've got two hours left.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58My boyfriend has a very special relationship with the toilet. He...

0:08:58 > 0:09:01SHE LAUGHS

0:09:02 > 0:09:06You guys, stop it. So I'm determined to make him proud.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08HE MOUTHS

0:09:08 > 0:09:10The cats do share the same toilet.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12The what? You share it with a cat?

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Yeah, they drink from it.

0:09:15 > 0:09:16They?

0:09:18 > 0:09:21- OK. So, Ryan - you're well travelled.- Yep.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24What's the strangest toilet you've ever used?

0:09:24 > 0:09:26Japan. It talks to you,

0:09:26 > 0:09:29like it heats up the seat and it cleans you at the same time.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31It's really weird. You don't know what button to push.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34You just push any button and all the spray starts coming out.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36You get a pleasant surprise.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Ryan's hoping there won't be any surprises,

0:09:39 > 0:09:42pleasant or otherwise, under his rim.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45The water's going to come in this end and hopefully swish it round to

0:09:45 > 0:09:47the front and go out these holes and these holes.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49There's a logic behind it because if you make these holes too big at the

0:09:49 > 0:09:52front here, all the water is going to come out here and not make its

0:09:52 > 0:09:55way to the front of the pan, so you're trying to balance that.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58But if the holes are not big enough, there won't be enough flush,

0:09:58 > 0:10:00there's a lot of logic behind it.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05I really like the way Ryan has approached this task.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Everything seems to be on target.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09He's already achieved his rim.

0:10:09 > 0:10:14I turned my back, I turned around again and there was a huge section on. It just seemed to be instant.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17But I want to see an element of hand building in this.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21I don't want to just see, pardon the pun, a bog-standard toilet.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23- Freya, are you all right? - I'm all right.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27- You've finished everything? - No, I've got loads to do.

0:10:27 > 0:10:28Freya's bowl did look quite large

0:10:28 > 0:10:31and with a large challenge like this,

0:10:31 > 0:10:34formers are definitely a good thing, don't you think?

0:10:34 > 0:10:35Not necessarily.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38She's building practically, she's building upside down,

0:10:38 > 0:10:40so she's definitely going to have a flat top because she's

0:10:40 > 0:10:42- building against a flat piece of wood.- Yeah, granted.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46But all the pieces do have to fit together and I just don't want Freya

0:10:46 > 0:10:50to be thinking on her feet all the time.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Gently teasing it off.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54What I want to see with Richard,

0:10:54 > 0:10:56it's fine to use the past as an inspiration,

0:10:56 > 0:10:58but it's not got to be a pastiche.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01He's really got to move forward and we said that about him.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05Clover's ecclesiastical thing,

0:11:05 > 0:11:08there's a lot of room for embellishment there, isn't there?

0:11:08 > 0:11:11I was really impressed with the way she was using those coils,

0:11:11 > 0:11:14but it was a bit concerning on her former, wasn't it?

0:11:14 > 0:11:16But now Clover's second former...

0:11:16 > 0:11:19This toilet bowl is actually a lot harder than I thought.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22..is proving just as tricky as her first.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25My former was extended with paper and it was a little bit soft and

0:11:25 > 0:11:27when I press it,

0:11:27 > 0:11:29it's sort of off shape again.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31I will let it dry a little bit

0:11:31 > 0:11:33and then I have to amend the shape a lot.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35That will be a lot of work there.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39But there's one component of this epic Main Make for which the potters

0:11:39 > 0:11:41won't have to create their own formers.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- Is this the beginnings of a U-bend?- Yes, this is the tube.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47Not a sentence I thought I'd ever be saying.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50'They've been given a precisely measured pipe

0:11:50 > 0:11:52'and mould to create a U-bend.'

0:11:52 > 0:11:54So I'm just trying to suss that out.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57This is the bit which fits at the bottom of the toilet.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Unless they can figure out how to join them together,

0:12:00 > 0:12:04when it comes to judging, flushing will not be pleasant.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07This actually attaches to the bowl and then the big basin will go on

0:12:07 > 0:12:09top of this as well, at the same time.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12But while Richard has decided to leave assembling

0:12:12 > 0:12:15his U-bend until the clay is dry,

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Ryan has chosen to try and get even further ahead.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20I'm kind of making it up really.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23So I've got to kind of join the pieces together and make this kind

0:12:23 > 0:12:26of gallery and cut it. That goes in there.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30The water goes down and up and out.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Actually, no, this is how it's meant to be.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Solving the U-bend mystery is a distant prospect for some.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41It looks quite heavy.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43It's really heavy, that.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46Freya has now been hand coiling her free-form bowl

0:12:46 > 0:12:48and plinth for almost three hours.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51I've got a plan, but the plan is only a plan

0:12:51 > 0:12:53and you've got to like, DO it.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55Yes, it's all very well sat there

0:12:55 > 0:12:57doodling and with all your measurements.

0:12:57 > 0:12:58Exactly. Singing to the toilet.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01But your measurements have got to come to life.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Yeah, a different story.

0:13:03 > 0:13:0730 minutes remaining before the potters' toilets must begin drying.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09Good U-bend, Ryan.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12- Thanks.- Never thought this would be happening, did you?

0:13:12 > 0:13:15No, just casually looking at my U-bend!

0:13:15 > 0:13:17- CLANKING - Oh!

0:13:17 > 0:13:21- Sorry.- My nerves, my nerves.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Offering up the rim, so now it sits hanging over slightly.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26I'm feeling absolutely under the pressure.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28You think four hours is good?

0:13:28 > 0:13:30No, it's not enough.

0:13:30 > 0:13:34Clover's flexible form has resulted in a bowl much larger than she planned.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37I accidentally made a bath.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39I'm trying to make it smaller

0:13:39 > 0:13:42by cutting a section of it and rejoining it.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44This new join massively increases

0:13:44 > 0:13:47the risk of her bowl cracking during firing.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50Is it just me, or is it really hot?

0:13:50 > 0:13:52And she's not the only one with size issues.

0:13:52 > 0:13:58The plinth is going to be roughly between 20 and 50...

0:13:58 > 0:14:0028...

0:14:00 > 0:14:0328...

0:14:03 > 0:14:05No, I've got numbers here,

0:14:05 > 0:14:08but I might have changed my mind about that.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Potters, you've got 20 minutes left.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15At the end of that 20 minutes,

0:14:15 > 0:14:17all your pieces need to be in the drying room or on the table.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21Oh, gosh. It's just not ready.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33I honestly don't know what I'm doing.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35I don't even know how we use the mould.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37I'm doing...

0:14:38 > 0:14:40I'm doing part of the U-bend.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49I would just like to get this on there like that.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52I find this really confusing.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55The U-bend. Oh, I'm just in a puzzle for no reason.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00This is going to give me a bit of a turtle finish.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03They're going to be hollow, because I know Keith will be moaning

0:15:03 > 0:15:06- they're too heavy or something. - This is your final push.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08Oh, I keep looking at it and it just doesn't make any sense.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10Five minutes left.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15I don't have a basin to work, I just have to imagine.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17Oh, my God.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20I cannot understand this.

0:15:20 > 0:15:24I'm going to stick it on at leather hard stage.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27This is actually going to be my turtle head.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31Less than a minute, Potters, you need to be getting your bits in the

0:15:31 > 0:15:33drying room if they're going in there, or on the back table.

0:15:33 > 0:15:37Ryan, you love the adrenaline rush of my ten-second countdown.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39Everyone's got their bits in.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41We're on ten now, come on.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Nine, eight. You've got to get it in there.

0:15:44 > 0:15:48Seven, six, five, four...

0:15:48 > 0:15:49Three, two...

0:15:49 > 0:15:51Well done, everyone. One.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55Awesome work, it's been a big morning for you, well done.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02The toilets now need to be left to dry until the clay is leather hard,

0:16:02 > 0:16:04before the potters can begin

0:16:04 > 0:16:07constructing and refining their designs.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09And while they wait for their next visit to the loo,

0:16:09 > 0:16:13the potters face a Throw Down, tailor-made for the semifinal.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Potters, welcome to your Throw Down.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23Now, as you might have noticed, Keith has normally got his apron on,

0:16:23 > 0:16:26but he's not, because cruelly,

0:16:26 > 0:16:31he's been given the boot by Kate in favour of a former pupil,

0:16:31 > 0:16:32- is that right?- It is, Sarah.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36I'm really excited to welcome Johnny Vegas.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42Hiya.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46Johnny Vegas is best known as a comedy legend of stage and screen.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50But his potting alter ego has a passion for ceramics

0:16:50 > 0:16:52that has burned for decades.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55I did a degree in ceramics at Middlesex University,

0:16:55 > 0:16:58where I was tutored by the wonderful Kate Malone.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00I think I've set them an incredibly difficult challenge.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03I don't think they will have seen this coming

0:17:03 > 0:17:04in a month of Sundays.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07What do you want our potters to make today, Johnny?

0:17:07 > 0:17:10I'd like you to make a teapot, the difference being,

0:17:10 > 0:17:12I'd like you to make it in under a minute.

0:17:12 > 0:17:13THEY SNIGGER AND LAUGH

0:17:13 > 0:17:16I know you're shaking your head, but look at me.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18I'm someone who life left behind.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20If I can do it, I'm sure you can.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22Johnny, I've got a stopwatch here.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24Three, two, one, go.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34That's fast and frantic.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37- Ten seconds gone, Johnny. - That looks all right.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43I can see his head pumping with the concentration.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46- Oh, I know.- It's just gone 20.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Oh, God, that's not even flat.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54Right, Johnny, you're halfway in your time now, 30 seconds.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56OK. 30 seconds?

0:17:56 > 0:17:5930 seconds. I'm in trouble. I'm in trouble. Right.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04- 20 left.- 20 left?

0:18:05 > 0:18:07Just think Salvador Dali.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10- 15 left.- OK.

0:18:10 > 0:18:11You are now at ten.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15Nine, eight, seven, six,

0:18:15 > 0:18:20five, four, three, two, one.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22APPLAUSE

0:18:22 > 0:18:24You had a second to spare there.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27I did, didn't I? I got cocky.

0:18:27 > 0:18:28Now, here's the big test.

0:18:28 > 0:18:31If I've passed or failed is, it has to pour.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34Let's see. More tea, vicar?

0:18:34 > 0:18:35APPLAUSE

0:18:39 > 0:18:41The Victoria and Albert museum

0:18:41 > 0:18:43have got one of his one-minute teapots in

0:18:43 > 0:18:48- their collection.- Because after Kate and her mates gave me a third in my

0:18:48 > 0:18:50degree, it was the only way I could get revenge.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55OK, potters, Johnny did it in one minute.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58We're going to be nice. We're going to give you five minutes

0:18:58 > 0:18:59to make five teapots.

0:19:01 > 0:19:02It is the semifinal.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05- Get ready.- Best of luck.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07We need a lid, a spout and a handle.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10Five minutes, your time starts now.

0:19:12 > 0:19:13Come on.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15Keep it at a good pace.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19That's it.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21Go!

0:19:23 > 0:19:26Come on, Clover! In with that spout.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29That's it, that's it.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31You're 30 seconds down, guys.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40- Come on.- It's gorgeous, good girl.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44Handle on. Freya's got a teapot, Ryan's got a teapot.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48Good going, Clover, come on.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51- Come on.- Richard's on his second one.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53Richard's going for the Fred Flintstone look.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56- I'm liking it, though.- Well done, you've got a teapot there.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58Three and a half minutes left.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00Come on, you're meant to be well over halfway

0:20:00 > 0:20:03through your second teapot. Come on.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05Good girl, Freya. Go on, crack on.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Good one, Clover. I like the base on that one.

0:20:07 > 0:20:08I love the base on that one.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10Two and a half minutes left, guys.

0:20:10 > 0:20:14- Come on, potters! Lid. Good one, Clover.- You can do this!

0:20:14 > 0:20:16- You can do this. - Pull the handle, come on.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18- It's got a hole in it!- Two minutes left.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Come on, this is the semifinal! Push for it.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23Come on.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26- Oh, where's my water? - Number four for Ryan. Go on, lad.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28Go on, Freya.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31Freya's just completing her fourth. Is she going to get to five?

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Come on!

0:20:33 > 0:20:35Freya, you're going all right there.

0:20:35 > 0:20:37Clover's on number five. You've got to get a lid,

0:20:37 > 0:20:40you've got to get a spout, we need to see handles.

0:20:40 > 0:20:44You're on your final minute now, guys.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46You're really going to have to get a move on now

0:20:46 > 0:20:48with this last one.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51OK, 45 seconds left. 45 seconds.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54If you've got time, finesse, finesse, finesse!

0:20:54 > 0:20:56LAUGHTER

0:20:56 > 0:20:57Come on!

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Come on, this is a semifinal!

0:21:01 > 0:21:03Keep pushing! Use every last second, please.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07I want to see you try your fifth teapot, come on.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09Here we go, guys, you've got to count down with me.

0:21:09 > 0:21:13ALL: Ten, nine, eight, seven,

0:21:13 > 0:21:19six, five, four, three, two, one.

0:21:19 > 0:21:20That's it!

0:21:20 > 0:21:22CHEERING

0:21:24 > 0:21:26Well done.

0:21:26 > 0:21:27Unbelievable.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30I thought I'd made five, I only made four.

0:21:30 > 0:21:31No wonder I was titivating.

0:21:31 > 0:21:35The judges are looking for a set of five teapots,

0:21:35 > 0:21:38each with a body, a lid, a spout and a handle.

0:21:39 > 0:21:40We have got five.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42This is my absolute favourite.

0:21:42 > 0:21:46You could not knock that over if you tried, could you?

0:21:46 > 0:21:49But this is the old, important pouring test.

0:21:49 > 0:21:53You could actually have a cup of tea and then flip it over and eat your

0:21:53 > 0:21:55dinner of the bottom half, couldn't you?

0:21:58 > 0:21:59- Beautiful.- Nice.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04- I have got to say, I am loving the monster spouts.- Yeah.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06They're so bad.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08There's some nice detailing.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11- KATE:- And frilly-edged tops as well.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13I really rather like them.

0:22:14 > 0:22:19I've a good feeling about this one. Yeah, that pours.

0:22:19 > 0:22:20They're great, aren't they?

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Lovely. They're almost Gaudi-esque.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25They look like blokes in flat caps coming through the work gates,

0:22:25 > 0:22:27talking to each other.

0:22:27 > 0:22:28- Tea for one?- Oh, yes, please.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31Don't mind if I do.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34- That's a good pour. - That's a good pourer.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38I really like these.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40He has taken the time to pull the handles.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Well, let's do the all-important pour test.

0:22:42 > 0:22:43That's a good one, that's going to hold.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46- It's got a lot there. It's a lot. - Look at that.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48- There's two tea cups there. - That is excellent.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Look at the pour on that.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53I WISH you'd done five.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55- I thought I'd actually made five. - Oh, did you?

0:22:55 > 0:22:58Yeah, and then I was just like, "Oh, I've got time, I'll tweak."

0:22:58 > 0:23:00I wish you'd realised.

0:23:01 > 0:23:06Johnny will now rank the potters' teapots from worst to best.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10I'm absolutely thrilled with the results that we got.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13Fourth place is Ryan because he has the lowest amount of teapots.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16It's basically because he can't count.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18What I would like is if our remaining potters

0:23:18 > 0:23:20would choose their favourite teapot

0:23:20 > 0:23:23and I'll make a decision based on that teapot.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37Third place is Clover.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39Technically and aesthetically,

0:23:39 > 0:23:41it's not holding up against the other two.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43Second place is Richard.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46The twist on the handle, and there's just a quality

0:23:46 > 0:23:47to these massive spouts.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49And first place is Freya.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52To think that five of them made in five minutes,

0:23:52 > 0:23:54I think that just deserves to win.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56Johnny, thank you so much for coming in.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58Thank you, thank you for having us. It's a pleasure.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01A little round of applause for Johnny - guest judge extraordinaire.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04Potters, you've worked really hard today, so you can go home,

0:24:04 > 0:24:06put the kettle on, possibly make a pot of tea or five and relax.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09We'll see you back here tomorrow morning bright and early.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12And best of luck, all of you.

0:24:12 > 0:24:13Well done.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16- Well done. - Well done, Freya.

0:24:16 > 0:24:20That's worth the stress that I've been through to do the toilet.

0:24:21 > 0:24:26I just couldn't believe it - Johnny Vegas is demonstrating!

0:24:26 > 0:24:27Wow.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30I thought not in a million years am I going to do one,

0:24:30 > 0:24:32let alone five!

0:24:32 > 0:24:34It's now becoming more of a reality,

0:24:34 > 0:24:36it's a competition, it's a semifinal,

0:24:36 > 0:24:39and the next stage is the final, so we know it's very close.

0:24:48 > 0:24:50The toilet components have been drying overnight.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55And the thickness of the clay in each pot

0:24:55 > 0:24:59dictates if it's the correct consistency to begin construction.

0:24:59 > 0:25:03It's still really wet. I thought it would be dry by now.

0:25:03 > 0:25:04I want it to be a little drier.

0:25:04 > 0:25:09I like to err on the side of caution, really.

0:25:09 > 0:25:10So I'm just hardening it all up.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12It's quite firm, actually, so it should be fine.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14You can't really bend it around that much,

0:25:14 > 0:25:17but it's soft enough to add things and to carve nicely.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19It's still sagging.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22I'm really panicked now. Things need to be joined together.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26There's no time wasting, waiting for it to dry.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29The semifinalists now have a huge to-do list.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31I've got a lot of things to be sticking on.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35Bowls need to be secured to plinths, rims fitted to bowls...

0:25:35 > 0:25:38I'm just trying to make it all a nice level rim.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40..and each handcrafted plumbing component

0:25:40 > 0:25:45must be precisely installed for that perfect flush at final judging.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48I've got in such a tizzy about this U-bend.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Hopefully I can keep the speed up.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52I'm just thinking about the teapot. I'm like...

0:25:52 > 0:25:55Sometimes it just takes you to be quick.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58Mine is more like an L-bend, I'm afraid.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01There's no U around it. If the water drains, I'm happy!

0:26:03 > 0:26:06This is just a cushion for supporting this.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09Even though Ryan got ahead and fitted his U-bend

0:26:09 > 0:26:10at the making stage...

0:26:10 > 0:26:13- Basically... - POPPING

0:26:13 > 0:26:15It's just the balloons popping.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17..he's still managing to keep himself busy.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21Did you cut it down that way and then build up the sides here?

0:26:21 > 0:26:24I did, yeah, because, basically, if you build that up a little bit,

0:26:24 > 0:26:26the water level will be higher.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Once attached, the U-bend will need to trap enough water

0:26:29 > 0:26:31to create a seal.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35The aim is not to think too much, otherwise I'll confuse myself.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38If it doesn't, the potters won't have a functioning toilet

0:26:38 > 0:26:40or the approval of the judges.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43Just got to keep trimming and offering up.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45Squidge it, squidge, squidge it.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48The base is just so soft, and then when I push the pipe in,

0:26:48 > 0:26:50the shape's knocked off again.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Even if they think they've attached a functioning U-bend...

0:26:53 > 0:26:56SHE GROANS ..the potters are about to find out

0:26:56 > 0:26:59if they've made a plinth that can take its weight

0:26:59 > 0:27:01along with the toilet bowl.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04I'm really cautious about cutting my stand,

0:27:04 > 0:27:07just because what if I've got it wrong, you know?

0:27:07 > 0:27:10I need to cut a bit on the stand so that

0:27:10 > 0:27:11the waste pipe can come out.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13I've smoothed all the inside now,

0:27:13 > 0:27:16so the plan is to get this on and I'm going to flip it again.

0:27:16 > 0:27:18So I'm going to put my base on it upside down.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41The waste part is dropping. It doesn't attach.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48SHE GROANS

0:27:48 > 0:27:49OK.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52But for one potter, hand coiling has meant that their plinth

0:27:52 > 0:27:55has got more to support than anyone else's.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57Guys, I need a hand.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00I'll just smooth out my hole and I'll be with you.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02SHE GROANS

0:28:02 > 0:28:04Hand under it.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08Oh, tell us where you want it. Forward a bit.

0:28:08 > 0:28:10The bowl in the middle, a bit forward.

0:28:10 > 0:28:13Does that need support there? It's going to collapse.

0:28:13 > 0:28:15It's all going to collapse. We're collapsing here, Freya.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17- I can feel it going. - Where is it going?

0:28:17 > 0:28:19We need to go over. We're not even centred.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22- I'm holding this as well. - What are you holding?

0:28:22 > 0:28:24Get some support in here. Anything.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27- That's sinking.- Shall I let it go? - OK, yeah. Let it sink, it's OK.

0:28:27 > 0:28:30- Yeah, let it sink. - Get something under it.

0:28:31 > 0:28:32Use that as a support.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35Look, put some clay in there, wedge it up.

0:28:35 > 0:28:39- Then you can work on it a bit. - Yeah. Thanks.- All right?

0:28:39 > 0:28:41Thank you.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43Potters, I hope you're not feeling too drained.

0:28:43 > 0:28:45- You have one hour left. - OK!

0:28:45 > 0:28:47I'm trying to get my rim attached,

0:28:47 > 0:28:50but because the toilet has actually shrunk,

0:28:50 > 0:28:52so the rim is slightly too big for it now.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54I'm just alternating.

0:28:54 > 0:28:55Hopefully the plinth is strong enough,

0:28:55 > 0:28:58I just need to carve away all this extra weight.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01OK, now the rim is fine, I need to join them.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13You don't want to sit on something which ain't level.

0:29:17 > 0:29:20Just done a bit of carving, but that's only the beginning, really.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22I think I was just way too ambitious.

0:29:22 > 0:29:24Now it's just a case of fitting this outlet valve.

0:29:24 > 0:29:28Water enters the toilet via a precisely-positioned opening

0:29:28 > 0:29:30- at the back of the rim. - How do you measure it?

0:29:30 > 0:29:34If it's cut in the wrong place, water will go everywhere,

0:29:34 > 0:29:36except where it's supposed to.

0:29:36 > 0:29:39Unfortunately, my rim is quite small,

0:29:39 > 0:29:44so the water pipe will be really jetting water into it.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48Put my turtle head on.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59Just adding slip to smoothen out the surface.

0:29:59 > 0:30:01I'm now putting my fins on.

0:30:01 > 0:30:04I'll be pretty disappointed if these fins fall off,

0:30:04 > 0:30:07because obviously they're the main part of the decoration.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10I'm being fanatical about strengthening them.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12I've put a coil around the top and bottom.

0:30:12 > 0:30:16Toilet seat...holes.

0:30:16 > 0:30:21I'm just going to carve into the surface to define the church window.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25We need to put a rim on it.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28I'm just highlighting the bit I want to paint a lot of colour on,

0:30:28 > 0:30:30with the white slip.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32The pipe is broken.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35One minute left, one minute left.

0:30:35 > 0:30:36Oh, God.

0:30:39 > 0:30:43Hopefully it will be working, I don't know.

0:30:43 > 0:30:44There's all sorts of things that can go wrong

0:30:44 > 0:30:46in the firing, you know?

0:30:48 > 0:30:51Tools down, please. Tools down.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53SHE EXHALES

0:30:58 > 0:31:03Our biggest Main Make yet has meant our longest wait ever for a firing.

0:31:03 > 0:31:05So the toilets have been drying for five days now.

0:31:05 > 0:31:07There have been a few issues, though.

0:31:07 > 0:31:12Freya has chosen to dry it on this solid prop, and as that bowl,

0:31:12 > 0:31:14and as that pedestal have shrunk back,

0:31:14 > 0:31:16this prop hasn't given way to it at all,

0:31:16 > 0:31:19and it's just split on the join.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21Ryan's piece has had a few problems.

0:31:21 > 0:31:22As this piece has dried,

0:31:22 > 0:31:26the big lump of a bowl has kind of stayed pretty static,

0:31:26 > 0:31:28and this back piece has obviously just stuck to the board

0:31:28 > 0:31:31and it's opened up this stress crack.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34The bisque firing will reach 1,000 degrees centigrade

0:31:34 > 0:31:36and last at least 20 hours.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38I'm just going to take this firing really slowly,

0:31:38 > 0:31:41so the risk of these toilets blowing up is reduced.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44But I have everything crossed that they survive.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46There's some thick walls in there,

0:31:46 > 0:31:50and some of those have retained moisture, so it's a worrying one.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53I'm going to lose a bit of sleep, I think.

0:31:53 > 0:31:56Oh, that's a nice fit.

0:31:56 > 0:32:00Are you going to try and sit on it before you decorate it?

0:32:00 > 0:32:02Before the potters' long wait for the toilet is over,

0:32:02 > 0:32:06they face another challenge to determine who will go through

0:32:06 > 0:32:07to the grand final.

0:32:07 > 0:32:11It's the most liberating Spot Test Kate and Keith have ever set.

0:32:11 > 0:32:14Potters, for your semifinal Spot Test,

0:32:14 > 0:32:17Kate and Keith would like you to make...

0:32:17 > 0:32:19whatever you like.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23You've got to let your creative juices run wild.

0:32:23 > 0:32:29We want you to design and make an original piece that reflects you.

0:32:29 > 0:32:33You can make any shape, any size, it can be a sculptural piece,

0:32:33 > 0:32:36it could be practical for the home, but I want to be impressed.

0:32:36 > 0:32:40You have two hours to create your masterpiece. Best of luck.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42Potters, get potting.

0:32:42 > 0:32:44HE EXHALES

0:32:46 > 0:32:50Each potter has a bag of clay and access to basic glazes.

0:32:50 > 0:32:52Whilst their finished pieces won't be fired,

0:32:52 > 0:32:56the potters must demonstrate an ability to create stunning work with

0:32:56 > 0:32:58no guidance whatsoever.

0:32:58 > 0:33:01It's now down to us and nobody else. You know, it's our ideas.

0:33:01 > 0:33:05I'm really happy about this. It's definitely liberating.

0:33:05 > 0:33:06Week after week, Freya has shown

0:33:06 > 0:33:10her free-spirited approach to pottery.

0:33:10 > 0:33:15This is like a really good opportunity to let the reins free.

0:33:15 > 0:33:18Even WITH a brief, she's lacked discipline, so with no direction,

0:33:18 > 0:33:21where will she go?

0:33:21 > 0:33:23I'm going to do a jar and then decorate it.

0:33:23 > 0:33:28It's so nice just to not fill a criteria all the time.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31I was not expecting to be allowed to be free style.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34Clover's chosen to go with a twist on something

0:33:34 > 0:33:37she made earlier in the competition.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39We have made a dinner set before,

0:33:39 > 0:33:42but we haven't made proper noodle bowls.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44I'm going to make a set of four

0:33:44 > 0:33:48and I'm going to make four small side plates.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50I'm going to make chopstick holder as well.

0:33:52 > 0:33:55Ryan has been methodical with his designs,

0:33:55 > 0:33:58planning has been the key to his success.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00But now, he's had no time to plan.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03I quite like making bottle-shaped forms,

0:34:03 > 0:34:05so I'm going to do some vases and

0:34:05 > 0:34:08then brush on colour at the same time as well.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11In some ways, it's very liberating.

0:34:11 > 0:34:13In others, it's very scary.

0:34:13 > 0:34:17Richard has always channelled his love of history into his pots,

0:34:17 > 0:34:20and this time he's travelling back to the 15th century.

0:34:20 > 0:34:24I'm doing a medieval style jug with a goblet and a bowl.

0:34:24 > 0:34:28I shall hopefully be decorating in a Gothic style.

0:34:28 > 0:34:31But he's not the only one with a foot in the past.

0:34:31 > 0:34:35- Do you know where the word potty comes from, to go potty?- No.

0:34:35 > 0:34:39Well, it was a madness and it was because they used lead in the glaze.

0:34:39 > 0:34:43- Oh, right.- It was down to the lead diluting into the beer

0:34:43 > 0:34:46and the people literally got lead poisoning and went potty.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49Yeah, Kate used quite a lot of lead glazes early on in her career(!)

0:34:49 > 0:34:52Yeah, early on... You can tell, really.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55I think it echoes a lot of where I've come from.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58There's a lot of influence from my father there.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00It's because of him that I'm here right now.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him.

0:35:02 > 0:35:05I kind of want it quite neat edged, quite controlled, really.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08I don't know if that's going to get me points or not,

0:35:08 > 0:35:10that's the trouble.

0:35:10 > 0:35:12The judges might not like my personality!

0:35:12 > 0:35:15Having thrown her first vase, true to form,

0:35:15 > 0:35:18Freya's decided to change her plan and throw a second.

0:35:19 > 0:35:21I'm going to do two jars.

0:35:21 > 0:35:23I may put one inside the other,

0:35:23 > 0:35:26so essentially, that's a double-walled jar.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30The more finer this type of shape

0:35:30 > 0:35:33would have external applied decoration on,

0:35:33 > 0:35:37and that was a higher class of vessel.

0:35:40 > 0:35:44I wish I hadn't chosen to do a four-piece set now.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47I think that's a stupid idea.

0:35:47 > 0:35:51Potters, just 30 minutes to complete your masterpieces.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53Which colour, which colour?

0:35:54 > 0:35:57The potters are free to use as much or as little glaze as they like

0:35:57 > 0:35:59to bring their creations to life.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02I do like a lot of blues, but I'm going to keep mixing in

0:36:02 > 0:36:05- and then play around with the surface pattern of it as well.- OK.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08The forms will be different, the colours are going to be different,

0:36:08 > 0:36:11- but they'll work as a series, I think.- Very playful.- Yes.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13Yeah. Are you quite playful, Ryan?

0:36:13 > 0:36:17Yeah, I'm quite playful. I like to experiment and explore.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22I'm just cutting it off because it would be boring

0:36:22 > 0:36:25if it was just a normal plate. This won't be thrown away -

0:36:25 > 0:36:28we're going to have a chopstick holder as well.

0:36:28 > 0:36:33Green was a traditional greenware colour they used in medieval times.

0:36:34 > 0:36:36It might be a silly idea.

0:36:36 > 0:36:38It's probably not going to work.

0:36:38 > 0:36:40Are you making chopsticks, Clover?

0:36:40 > 0:36:43- Well, it's a dinner set, so... - That is wicked!

0:36:43 > 0:36:46- Cool idea, though. I love it. - Stupid, Clover!

0:36:54 > 0:36:56I'm just sticking this pot inside.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03So there's a jar inside for decoration.

0:37:06 > 0:37:11With her dinner set finally made, Clover moves on to the decoration.

0:37:11 > 0:37:15I'm using the drip trailer to create this dripping effect.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19I'm going to cut some fishes out of this one.

0:37:19 > 0:37:23Potters, one minute left of this Spot Test.

0:37:23 > 0:37:27Any final little touches and zhooshes need to happen now.

0:37:35 > 0:37:37Neeow!

0:37:37 > 0:37:40There goes Clover.

0:37:40 > 0:37:42I wouldn't mind, but she's jolting me!

0:37:42 > 0:37:45Ten, nine...

0:37:45 > 0:37:47Clover! Eight,

0:37:47 > 0:37:53seven, six, five, four,

0:37:53 > 0:37:57three, two, one.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01Tools down, please.

0:38:01 > 0:38:03Well done.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07Kate and Keith are expecting stunning

0:38:07 > 0:38:11and completely original designs that reflect their maker.

0:38:11 > 0:38:16So, Clover, you've cut the sides off to make the chopstick holders.

0:38:16 > 0:38:18- Yes.- Very nice use of design.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20I wish the chopsticks had been dead-on.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23You know, they're a little bit wonky, aren't they?

0:38:23 > 0:38:25And, of course, the design that she's used is very, very striking.

0:38:25 > 0:38:29Whether it's your cup of tea or your bowl of noodle or not,

0:38:29 > 0:38:32the bold use of colour really, really works.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36There's a bowl at the end here that's a bit lacklustre.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39Richard, the medieval jug. I love the pattern.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41These are a bit bland.

0:38:41 > 0:38:44And if you're going to do a set of four of anything,

0:38:44 > 0:38:45they've got to be the same.

0:38:45 > 0:38:49Looking at it as a set, I feel the goblets and the jug

0:38:49 > 0:38:50don't suit the bowl.

0:38:51 > 0:38:53Ryan...

0:38:57 > 0:38:59It's really good.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02You've done a variation on a theme, they're not all the same.

0:39:02 > 0:39:06You've done a range of decoration that ties them all in.

0:39:06 > 0:39:08The throwing is pretty good.

0:39:08 > 0:39:10You have played with the colour.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12They do show a lovely variety.

0:39:12 > 0:39:14I'd have them on a shelf in my home.

0:39:15 > 0:39:20Freya, I think technically, within the time given, you have done a lot.

0:39:20 > 0:39:21I love the double skin.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24You've got such a lovely sense of proportion.

0:39:24 > 0:39:25The jar and the lid work.

0:39:25 > 0:39:28This is a lovely shape, you've got an amazing shape.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31It shows really good throwing skills.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33It's a good use of colour.

0:39:36 > 0:39:40Blimey, Freya, it's even clean underneath. Well done.

0:39:40 > 0:39:44But who's triumphed in the semifinal Spot Test?

0:39:44 > 0:39:46In fourth place is Richard.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49Richard, it doesn't seem to be a whole set.

0:39:49 > 0:39:53In third place is Clover.

0:39:53 > 0:39:55If you'd just done that fourth bowl slightly nicer,

0:39:55 > 0:39:57it might have pushed you up a bit.

0:39:57 > 0:40:01And in second place is...

0:40:01 > 0:40:03This one, Freya.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06We felt that you really stretched the technique.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08You did a lot within it.

0:40:08 > 0:40:09So, in first place is Ryan.

0:40:09 > 0:40:12Well done, Ryan.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16Really lovely set, lovely decoration.

0:40:16 > 0:40:18Well done, brilliant.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21I made Keith cry twice. That's a winner in my eyes.

0:40:21 > 0:40:23Well done!

0:40:23 > 0:40:26I'm quite disappointed about myself, I know I can do a lot better.

0:40:26 > 0:40:29They didn't really have a great deal to say about the decoration.

0:40:29 > 0:40:30But I didn't do a lot.

0:40:30 > 0:40:33Keith was pleased that I had a clean bottom.

0:40:33 > 0:40:36I hope it will kind of support me a little bit because I really need

0:40:36 > 0:40:40all the help I can get with that toilet.

0:40:40 > 0:40:41The toilets have cooled.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44How they've fared in the first firing could have a huge impact on

0:40:44 > 0:40:47the potters' chances of reaching the final.

0:40:47 > 0:40:50Let's talk about Ryan first.

0:40:50 > 0:40:52It's an amazing handbuild.

0:40:52 > 0:40:55It looks like a turtle, he's really got the shape of the head,

0:40:55 > 0:40:58- the shape of the mouth.- If he gets it all right with his glazing,

0:40:58 > 0:40:59it could look really stunning.

0:40:59 > 0:41:01Let's talk about Clover.

0:41:01 > 0:41:04The hole where her U-bend goes in does look really odd,

0:41:04 > 0:41:07and I'm not sure whether it's going to practically work.

0:41:07 > 0:41:08Clover can decorate, can't she?

0:41:08 > 0:41:11You've seen this before and you've loved it.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13And she's used the white slip to make the body brighter,

0:41:13 > 0:41:15so the glazes will ring true.

0:41:15 > 0:41:16It's all to play for with Richard.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18He's shown us inspiration in the past,

0:41:18 > 0:41:21and his construction looks really, really good.

0:41:21 > 0:41:23Let's talk about Freya, then.

0:41:23 > 0:41:27I kept going round and seeing this toilet just grow before my eyes.

0:41:27 > 0:41:29It's massive!

0:41:29 > 0:41:31She was up on the bench building this thing.

0:41:31 > 0:41:33Even I'd fall in it.

0:41:33 > 0:41:35Do you think she's going to do a Freya where she just pulls it out

0:41:35 > 0:41:39- the bag?- She does bring it together with decoration often.

0:41:39 > 0:41:43But after the bisque firing, whose toilet is still intact

0:41:43 > 0:41:45and worth decorating?

0:41:50 > 0:41:52A crack at the back.

0:41:52 > 0:41:56All my fins are on. There's a crack here, though, unfortunately.

0:41:56 > 0:42:00One, two, three,

0:42:00 > 0:42:03four, five cracks.

0:42:03 > 0:42:06There are some cracks, but it's not too bad.

0:42:06 > 0:42:08You know, I have something to work on.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11I think I beat the crack competition

0:42:11 > 0:42:14because I have five cracks.

0:42:14 > 0:42:15Everyone else has got one.

0:42:15 > 0:42:17OK, I don't think he's got any, actually.

0:42:17 > 0:42:19What's pleasing - we're in one piece.

0:42:19 > 0:42:21That's your initial worry out of the window.

0:42:21 > 0:42:24Now, the other worry, we've just got to glaze it.

0:42:29 > 0:42:32We're going for a meadow effect - wild flowers, nice summer's day,

0:42:32 > 0:42:36butterflies flying by and having a sit on your toilet,

0:42:36 > 0:42:37what could be better?

0:42:37 > 0:42:40My inspiration is this stained-glass window because

0:42:40 > 0:42:42the colour is just so vibrant.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45You know, the traditional toilet is white, so I thought,

0:42:45 > 0:42:48"Well, let's do something the opposite, which is black."

0:42:48 > 0:42:52Oh, my God! It's heavier than me, that.

0:42:52 > 0:42:56With five cracks to repair...

0:42:56 > 0:43:00- Oh, that worked!- ..Freya has some work to do before she can decorate.

0:43:00 > 0:43:02For the really big, gaping cracks,

0:43:02 > 0:43:05I'm going to just put big bits of grog in there.

0:43:05 > 0:43:06I'll just fill that one in,

0:43:06 > 0:43:09I don't want to spend any more time on this.

0:43:09 > 0:43:11I'm just closely looking at the pattern of the turtle.

0:43:11 > 0:43:14I've got some inspiration, of the textures and stuff.

0:43:14 > 0:43:17I want it to be quite comical, so it's more of an Impressionist piece.

0:43:17 > 0:43:20This is looking "turtley" lovely.

0:43:20 > 0:43:23- I need to give her a name. - You've got to decide. Tina?- Tina.

0:43:23 > 0:43:26- Tina the turtle. - Tina the toilet turtle.

0:43:26 > 0:43:27Tina the toilet...

0:43:27 > 0:43:30It looks like Tina's been on a night out with that mouth.

0:43:30 > 0:43:32SHE HUMS

0:43:32 > 0:43:35What kind of glazing are you thinking of putting on this?

0:43:35 > 0:43:37I was going to do the whole thing white.

0:43:37 > 0:43:41- Yeah.- And then I had the women borders at the side.

0:43:41 > 0:43:42The decoration's going to be quite fluid.

0:43:42 > 0:43:45That kind of Medusa-esque concept that you had before.

0:43:45 > 0:43:48- Yeah, it's quite erotic in a nice way of putting it.- Yeah.

0:43:48 > 0:43:54But Victorian as well, you know, and my own interpretation.

0:43:54 > 0:43:56The Victorians were great gardeners.

0:43:56 > 0:44:00And also the Victorians loved to decorate inside as well as out.

0:44:00 > 0:44:03It gets a bit claustrophobic at times.

0:44:03 > 0:44:07And Richard's not the only potter going for beauty on the inside.

0:44:07 > 0:44:10I'm just continuing the colour, basically, of the rainbow.

0:44:10 > 0:44:12All the colours from the outside of the turtle evolving in

0:44:12 > 0:44:15so you get a nice, pleasant surprise on the inside.

0:44:15 > 0:44:16It's beautiful in there.

0:44:16 > 0:44:19It's a loo worthy of a cathedral, or something, isn't it?

0:44:19 > 0:44:20Would you do the honour?

0:44:22 > 0:44:26It depends what honour you're talking about here!

0:44:26 > 0:44:28It took me five minutes to sketch all my ideas out,

0:44:28 > 0:44:31but making it is five hours.

0:44:31 > 0:44:33Just tits and bums.

0:44:33 > 0:44:36The time's ticking twice as fast as normal today,

0:44:36 > 0:44:38someone get the clock checked, please.

0:44:38 > 0:44:40This is why I lay out all the colour.

0:44:40 > 0:44:43They are duplicates, but they're just at different areas,

0:44:43 > 0:44:45so it looks like it's got lots of colour,

0:44:45 > 0:44:47but it's a duplicate of about 12 colours there.

0:44:49 > 0:44:51I'm just creating a shell texture, so when it lifts up,

0:44:51 > 0:44:53you've still got a pattern from the shell

0:44:53 > 0:44:55continuing down into the piece.

0:44:55 > 0:44:57We've just started on the outside.

0:44:57 > 0:45:00Time really is rushing by.

0:45:00 > 0:45:02We've got to be fairly liberal, I think.

0:45:02 > 0:45:04I'm going to have to rush a bit now.

0:45:06 > 0:45:08This is a clear gloss coat.

0:45:08 > 0:45:10What I want this to do is go on really thick,

0:45:10 > 0:45:12and really pop those colours, hopefully.

0:45:12 > 0:45:15So I'm putting a lot on.

0:45:15 > 0:45:18Any last-minute flourishes, any last-minute checks.

0:45:18 > 0:45:20Make sure you're happy with what you've done so far,

0:45:20 > 0:45:23because you are one minute to tools-down.

0:45:23 > 0:45:27I rushed the colouring a bit to make sure my clear coat

0:45:27 > 0:45:33covers all the toilet inside out. I wouldn't say it's finished.

0:45:33 > 0:45:37I am just putting the final touches of the clear glaze,

0:45:37 > 0:45:42so we should get a nice, bright, shiny, hygienic toilet.

0:45:42 > 0:45:45I can feel a countdown coming on.

0:45:46 > 0:45:51Ten, nine, eight, seven,

0:45:51 > 0:45:54six, five,

0:45:54 > 0:45:56four, three,

0:45:56 > 0:45:59two, one.

0:45:59 > 0:46:02Tools down, semifinalists.

0:46:02 > 0:46:04Tools down.

0:46:04 > 0:46:08Great work. Yeah, well done.

0:46:08 > 0:46:09We can do no more.

0:46:13 > 0:46:15It's judgment day.

0:46:15 > 0:46:18Richard, Freya, Clover and Ryan will soon discover

0:46:18 > 0:46:21which of them will be headed to the grand final.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26Very apprehensive. How's the work come out of the kiln?

0:46:26 > 0:46:28I would love to make it through to the final.

0:46:28 > 0:46:29If I don't make it to the final,

0:46:29 > 0:46:31I'm really happy that I made it this far.

0:46:31 > 0:46:34My biggest worry is my cracks have gotten a lot bigger.

0:46:34 > 0:46:36My piece could be in two.

0:46:36 > 0:46:38Things could go wrong, you never know.

0:46:38 > 0:46:41And I think we have to assemble the toilet ourselves, right?

0:46:42 > 0:46:43I'm not sure!

0:46:45 > 0:46:47Each potter has been given their own display stand,

0:46:47 > 0:46:50complete with working cistern.

0:46:50 > 0:46:52Before judging, they must fit a seat to their toilet

0:46:52 > 0:46:54and plumb it in.

0:46:56 > 0:46:59I don't think there's supposed to be so much space here.

0:46:59 > 0:47:02It's like putting a puzzle together.

0:47:02 > 0:47:05I've designed the print on the fabric of the tortoiseshell

0:47:05 > 0:47:07and then covered it around the toilet seat.

0:47:07 > 0:47:10You lift the shell up to go to the toilet.

0:47:10 > 0:47:12This side goes to here.

0:47:12 > 0:47:14Is it supposed to go on there?

0:47:14 > 0:47:15It doesn't fit.

0:47:24 > 0:47:26Right, we're on.

0:47:26 > 0:47:28Oh, yes, it does go in.

0:47:29 > 0:47:30Ow!

0:47:30 > 0:47:33The potters won't find out if their toilets function

0:47:33 > 0:47:36until they're flushed for the very first time by the judges.

0:47:36 > 0:47:39Fingers crossed for the big...

0:47:39 > 0:47:40flush.

0:47:46 > 0:47:48Well, potters, let the judging commence, and I think, Richard,

0:47:48 > 0:47:50you're up first.

0:48:03 > 0:48:08The first thing I noticed, Richard, and it moves me to tears a bit,

0:48:08 > 0:48:10you surprise me every time.

0:48:10 > 0:48:12Your butterfly decoration,

0:48:12 > 0:48:16the attention to detail is just really, really lovely.

0:48:16 > 0:48:18They are very clear, very crisp.

0:48:18 > 0:48:20You weren't looking for the glaze to run.

0:48:20 > 0:48:23You've used the colours to the best of their advantage.

0:48:23 > 0:48:26And not only the butterflies, but you've actually used the buff

0:48:26 > 0:48:29colour of the body to give a sort of cloudy summer's day,

0:48:29 > 0:48:31which is actually a really difficult thing to do.

0:48:31 > 0:48:35Had you put a solid blue on, it wouldn't have been as successful.

0:48:35 > 0:48:38- There's two sort of issues here. One, the fit.- Yeah.

0:48:38 > 0:48:40That's the first thing I'm looking at -

0:48:40 > 0:48:42this kind of bulge here.

0:48:42 > 0:48:44Do want to take it for a test ride?

0:48:44 > 0:48:46- HE EXHALES - Yeah.

0:48:46 > 0:48:50Here we go. As he lowers himself majestically...

0:48:50 > 0:48:52It's a nice height. I'm quite tall.

0:48:54 > 0:48:58It's quite a small... Quite a small rim.

0:48:58 > 0:49:00But because it's slightly taller, it's quite nice.

0:49:00 > 0:49:02- Kate, are you ready to flush?- Yes.

0:49:09 > 0:49:13- It's like a fountain! - It's a long flush.

0:49:13 > 0:49:15It's slightly flat. The bottom's very flat, isn't it...

0:49:15 > 0:49:17- The bowl...- Yeah. - ..the bottom of the bowl?

0:49:17 > 0:49:18But the water is staying in the U-bend,

0:49:18 > 0:49:21You know, no smells are going to come back up,

0:49:21 > 0:49:23- so you've got the theory of it well. - Thank you.

0:49:40 > 0:49:44You were very, very bold and very brave in going for a black toilet

0:49:44 > 0:49:47because it's a large object and it could have looked

0:49:47 > 0:49:48like a big, black splodge.

0:49:48 > 0:49:52Fortunately, you've used the colours really, really well.

0:49:52 > 0:49:55- You've obviously done some sort of scratch design on here.- Yeah.

0:49:55 > 0:49:59Which actually looks a bit like the lead from a stained-glass window.

0:49:59 > 0:50:02So I'm just going to lift the loo seat up.

0:50:02 > 0:50:04It's like snakes and ladders in there, Clover.

0:50:04 > 0:50:05It's like a snake going down.

0:50:05 > 0:50:08I do like the idea of the pattern going to the inside, sort of,

0:50:08 > 0:50:11- echoing, hopefully, the movement of the water...- Hopefully.

0:50:11 > 0:50:14..that we're going to see. I am a bit concerned about your U-bend,

0:50:14 > 0:50:16though, Clover. It seems like you've got a little dip

0:50:16 > 0:50:20in front of the U-bend and, really, when the water and whatever else

0:50:20 > 0:50:21it's trying to flush away,

0:50:21 > 0:50:24it has to go smoothly down the U-bend and out.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27- OK, here we go.- Good luck.

0:50:27 > 0:50:30- It's a bit small for me. - Sturdy?- It's quite comfortable.

0:50:30 > 0:50:32- Yeah, it's sturdy. - OK, here we go.

0:50:38 > 0:50:40Well, the water came out through the rim well,

0:50:40 > 0:50:43but there is no trap of water there for the U-bend.

0:50:43 > 0:50:46- The U-bend is not filling up. - That's the thing, yeah.

0:51:02 > 0:51:06So, Freya, I saw you fighting with this and it had a support under its

0:51:06 > 0:51:08chin when it went into the drying room.

0:51:08 > 0:51:10It looked as though it was really leaning forward,

0:51:10 > 0:51:13and I was concerned that after firing, it wouldn't stand up.

0:51:13 > 0:51:15I'm very pleased to see it standing up.

0:51:15 > 0:51:19And that is testimony to your perseverance with this.

0:51:19 > 0:51:23I like the way it's a square that rises up into a round.

0:51:23 > 0:51:26I noticed in your sketchbook your designs were much more flamboyant

0:51:26 > 0:51:29than you've managed to build. And I'm quite sad that

0:51:29 > 0:51:33that fluidity from your drawing hasn't carried through.

0:51:33 > 0:51:36You've really saved it with glazing to an extent,

0:51:36 > 0:51:38and I was impressed by the way you

0:51:38 > 0:51:40drew so freely on a vertical surface and a curved...

0:51:40 > 0:51:42That's not easy at all.

0:51:42 > 0:51:44I know you had some issues with cracks.

0:51:44 > 0:51:46You've completely covered those cracks,

0:51:46 > 0:51:49but one thing I have to say is, where's your rim?

0:51:49 > 0:51:53There's no way the water is going to channel round the bowl.

0:51:53 > 0:51:54Where's the U-bend?

0:51:54 > 0:51:57I'm seeing a bowl with a sort of letterbox off the back.

0:51:57 > 0:51:59The big moment now, Freya.

0:51:59 > 0:52:01Would you like Keith to sit on your toilet?

0:52:01 > 0:52:02You're more than welcome.

0:52:02 > 0:52:05Making dreams come true with that bottom of his.

0:52:08 > 0:52:11It's very, very high. It's a good size for me.

0:52:11 > 0:52:13I don't know whether it's a standard size.

0:52:13 > 0:52:15Kate, are you ready to flush?

0:52:15 > 0:52:17- I'm ready to flush. - Here we go.- Ready?

0:52:19 > 0:52:21SHE SCREAMS

0:52:22 > 0:52:26Oh, my God! Sorry, Kate. I'm sorry.

0:52:26 > 0:52:29- That's OK. We were worried that was going to happen!- Oh!

0:52:29 > 0:52:33We thought there might be a slight sprinkle, but not quite such a...

0:52:33 > 0:52:35- Gosh, that was dramatic. - That was really aggressive.

0:52:35 > 0:52:37- That's the Niagara Falls of toilets. - It's basically a log flume.

0:52:57 > 0:53:01When you first explained the design concept, I thought,

0:53:01 > 0:53:05"My God! The fins of this turtle are going to be too far out,

0:53:05 > 0:53:07"the head is going to be just too big."

0:53:07 > 0:53:09But I have to say...

0:53:09 > 0:53:10it's great.

0:53:10 > 0:53:13- It's great.- I was a bit worried that your plinth was thin

0:53:13 > 0:53:16and it might slightly distort during the firing,

0:53:16 > 0:53:18and it hasn't, that's merit to you.

0:53:18 > 0:53:21The loo seat fits really, really lovely.

0:53:21 > 0:53:23- You've used ceramic pencils...- Yeah.

0:53:23 > 0:53:26..to accentuate the skin of the turtle.

0:53:26 > 0:53:29The eyes, the black eyes, it's just dead-on.

0:53:29 > 0:53:32Keith, would you like to now have a ride on Tina?

0:53:33 > 0:53:36Entertainment wise, are you entertained by looking down

0:53:36 > 0:53:37and seeing Tina's head there?

0:53:37 > 0:53:40Well, it's a bit alarming, but...

0:53:40 > 0:53:42But joyful at the same time.

0:53:42 > 0:53:46- Yeah, it's nice and comfortable. - I'm ready to flush.

0:53:46 > 0:53:48- Take it away, please. - I'm quick on my feet this time.

0:53:51 > 0:53:54- Oh, I say! - SARA WHISTLES

0:53:54 > 0:53:58- That's good.- Beautiful. - That is a really good flush.

0:53:58 > 0:53:59And, again, your glazes are so thick,

0:53:59 > 0:54:01they gave this little bubbling up,

0:54:01 > 0:54:04and again it's added to the sense of the water.

0:54:04 > 0:54:07- Impressed.- Thank you.

0:54:13 > 0:54:16I think they were surprised that the actual turtle came out quite well.

0:54:16 > 0:54:18I think they were expecting something very different.

0:54:18 > 0:54:21Ryan and Richard's toilet, they're perfect,

0:54:21 > 0:54:22so they go straight through to the final.

0:54:22 > 0:54:24It's between me and Freya,

0:54:24 > 0:54:28but if we take the overall knowledge and creativity,

0:54:28 > 0:54:30I think that Freya is ahead of me.

0:54:30 > 0:54:34I don't think that the Throw Down or the Spot Test is going to give me

0:54:34 > 0:54:37any leeway on this one, unfortunately.

0:54:37 > 0:54:39You've always got it in the back of your mind

0:54:39 > 0:54:41that you've not done well in the Spot Test,

0:54:41 > 0:54:43and that that could come back to haunt me.

0:54:43 > 0:54:45You know, you've got to put your hands up and say

0:54:45 > 0:54:47"I wasn't good enough."

0:54:49 > 0:54:50You've got a big decision to make.

0:54:50 > 0:54:53I mean, every week it's big, but this is the semifinal.

0:54:53 > 0:54:56Who are you going to send through to the final?

0:54:56 > 0:54:57It has to be Ryan.

0:54:57 > 0:54:58He was brave with his design.

0:54:58 > 0:55:02I thought it wasn't going to work, and he really surprised me.

0:55:02 > 0:55:05Freya, I mean, it was more of a sort of funfair ride, wasn't it,

0:55:05 > 0:55:08than a loo? And she came second in the Spot Test,

0:55:08 > 0:55:10first in the Throw Down.

0:55:10 > 0:55:12Surely that must count for something?

0:55:12 > 0:55:15Well, it does, but ironically, the double-walled vase,

0:55:15 > 0:55:16the reason why she came second is

0:55:16 > 0:55:19because it's actually a very technically complex

0:55:19 > 0:55:20kind of thing to build.

0:55:20 > 0:55:23Where did that all go wrong with the Main Make?

0:55:23 > 0:55:25She did bring it back a bit with the glaze surface.

0:55:25 > 0:55:27To paint on a vertical surface, it isn't easy,

0:55:27 > 0:55:29and it just flowed from her brush.

0:55:29 > 0:55:31Let's talk about Richard.

0:55:31 > 0:55:33It was very, very concise, very focused

0:55:33 > 0:55:35and he achieved exactly what he wanted to do.

0:55:35 > 0:55:40Technically, though, his rim didn't really coincide with the loo seat.

0:55:40 > 0:55:43Clover didn't get her U-bend quite right, but essentially,

0:55:43 > 0:55:45the design was the most dramatic.

0:55:45 > 0:55:49A lot of black there, which can always be a bit risky.

0:55:49 > 0:55:50As much as we criticise,

0:55:50 > 0:55:53this is one of the biggest makes we've ever done,

0:55:53 > 0:55:54and I'm incredibly impressed.

0:55:54 > 0:55:58Well, impressed or not, only three can go through to next week's final.

0:55:58 > 0:56:00Are you any closer to coming to that decision?

0:56:00 > 0:56:03- It's not my favourite part of the process.- No, nor mine.

0:56:14 > 0:56:17Potters, let's have the good stuff first.

0:56:17 > 0:56:20And to announce Potter of the Week is Keith.

0:56:20 > 0:56:24So, brilliant design concept, wonderful execution...

0:56:26 > 0:56:29Ryan. Well done, Ryan.

0:56:29 > 0:56:31- Congratulations!- Well done.

0:56:31 > 0:56:33Ryan, you're one of our finalists, congratulations.

0:56:33 > 0:56:35Thank you, thank you, thank you!

0:56:35 > 0:56:38However, the judges have made their decision

0:56:38 > 0:56:40and the person leaving the pottery,

0:56:40 > 0:56:45and therefore not going through to next week's final, is...

0:56:56 > 0:56:58It's Freya.

0:57:00 > 0:57:02Well done. Well done.

0:57:03 > 0:57:05Well done. Well done, guys. You did really well.

0:57:05 > 0:57:07Oh, Freya!

0:57:08 > 0:57:09Well done.

0:57:10 > 0:57:13'The pressure got to me and it really blinded me

0:57:13 > 0:57:15'in this last challenge.'

0:57:15 > 0:57:18I'm absolutely devastated, but I knew it was coming.

0:57:18 > 0:57:20So I'm not surprised.

0:57:22 > 0:57:25I really thought Freya was going to go to the final.

0:57:25 > 0:57:29Ryan's toilet is the seventh exhibit in our Pot of the Week gallery.

0:57:29 > 0:57:32I feel like I really put everything into that,

0:57:32 > 0:57:37but also seeing Freya go, there's that amazing creative level she has,

0:57:37 > 0:57:41which is now going to be lost in the final,

0:57:41 > 0:57:44which I think is going to be tough for me, actually, because I feel

0:57:44 > 0:57:47like she was really inspiring me to, like, go on through.

0:57:49 > 0:57:52The amount of work was really outstanding.

0:57:52 > 0:57:57That's what it does, it's pushed us and we've grown,

0:57:57 > 0:58:00and I've got friends for life now, a group of potters for life.

0:58:00 > 0:58:03That's great! I've always wanted that.

0:58:03 > 0:58:06- ALL:- Awww!

0:58:06 > 0:58:10I feel a sense of achievement finally in the show.

0:58:10 > 0:58:12I didn't feel that before.

0:58:12 > 0:58:17Now it just hit me - the final. Really? Yes.

0:58:17 > 0:58:21In my life I've done a fair bit, various darts finals, re-enactments,

0:58:21 > 0:58:24going to... Meeting some wonderful people.

0:58:24 > 0:58:27But this has got to be right up there in the achievements.

0:58:27 > 0:58:30Never, never did I ever think I would make the final.

0:58:33 > 0:58:34Next time...

0:58:34 > 0:58:37Potters, here we go.

0:58:37 > 0:58:39Calm down, Clover(!)

0:58:40 > 0:58:42The winner...

0:58:42 > 0:58:44Stop sagging! No!

0:58:44 > 0:58:47..of The Great Pottery Throw Down...

0:58:47 > 0:58:48That was evil.

0:58:48 > 0:58:50..is...

0:58:53 > 0:58:54That wasn't good.
