0:00:02 > 0:00:04For the last eight weeks, Middleport has been home

0:00:04 > 0:00:06to ten of Britain's finest home potters.

0:00:06 > 0:00:07SHE GASPS

0:00:07 > 0:00:09There's been blood...

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Quite disturbing, isn't it?

0:00:12 > 0:00:13..sweat...

0:00:13 > 0:00:15Come on!

0:00:15 > 0:00:16..and tears...

0:00:16 > 0:00:18I'm really, really impressed.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22..as they turn lumps of clay into stunning ceramics.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26This is fantastic!

0:00:26 > 0:00:28- But those who floundered...- Ooh!

0:00:28 > 0:00:29..were flushed away.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32THEY YELL

0:00:32 > 0:00:36Now, just Clover, Richard and Ryan remain...

0:00:36 > 0:00:39Well, this is a total and utter failure.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43..to face three stomach-churning challenges.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45Calm down, Clover.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47But who will be crowned winner...

0:00:47 > 0:00:49The Titanic, I think, has hit an iceberg.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52..of The Great Pottery Throw Down?

0:00:53 > 0:00:54That isn't good.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03# Makin' time

0:01:04 > 0:01:06# Shootin' lines

0:01:07 > 0:01:10# People have their uses

0:01:11 > 0:01:13# People have their uses. #

0:01:23 > 0:01:26Clover's journey to the final hasn't always been smooth.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30She struggled on some of the larger builds.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34But her exquisite eye for detail...

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Can I just take it and run now?

0:01:37 > 0:01:41..won her Pot Of The Week with a delicate set of Russian dolls.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45Just cannot express what I am actually feeling now.

0:01:45 > 0:01:50Now I've got this far, I start wanting a bit more, actually.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53From the very start, pub landlord Richard

0:01:53 > 0:01:57has brought his love of history to the pottery.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Canopic jars, which were laid next to Pharaohs.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04His simple approach to design hasn't always impressed the judges...

0:02:04 > 0:02:06You could have done a bit more to that.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09But his pit-fired vases left them lost for words...

0:02:11 > 0:02:13I'm speechless.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15..as he claimed Pot Of The Week.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17I really, really, really would love to win it.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21There would be nothing better to say, "I'm Top Potter."

0:02:21 > 0:02:25It doesn't matter what the judges give us - bring it on.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Ryan threw a perfect dinner set.

0:02:28 > 0:02:33But he narrowly escaped being sent home after a COD-awful disaster...

0:02:33 > 0:02:35This one has already been filleted, I think.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39..but came back fighting to claim a second spot in the gallery

0:02:39 > 0:02:41with his turtle toilet.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45I had no idea that I would get this far and be in the final today.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48I was up all night prepping and worrying and tossing and turning.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51So, yeah, it's... Yeah, sleepless night.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56- Good luck, guys.- Good luck. - Good luck. Cheers.

0:02:57 > 0:02:58Three potters.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03Three final challenges.

0:03:08 > 0:03:09Wow! Potters, good morning.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12And firstly, I mean, huge congratulations to you three

0:03:12 > 0:03:14for making it through to the final.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17You must be very, very proud of yourselves.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20We're going to kick off, then, with the big challenge -

0:03:20 > 0:03:22your grand-final Main Make.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Kate and Keith would like you to make

0:03:25 > 0:03:29a pair of identical porcelain lights.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32I've been working with porcelain for 25 years now.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35In my view, it's one of the most amazing clays.

0:03:35 > 0:03:36These are light features.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Think of the translucency.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40We want to see that light coming through.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43So we've got to see beauty, fine design,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46great use of clay and beautiful use of light.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49OK, potters, you've got four hours

0:03:49 > 0:03:51for this first part of your Main Make.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53It's your time to shine.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03The bar is set so high. For the judges to ask us to do

0:04:03 > 0:04:06two identical pendants with porcelain,

0:04:06 > 0:04:08it's really challenging.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12I had a little read-up and you need a lot of experience -

0:04:12 > 0:04:14you need to work with it.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16And, er, I haven't.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19My experience of porcelain is zero.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22The closest I come to porcelain is when I go to the loo.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Porcelain - its sensitivity is almost frightening, isn't it?

0:04:29 > 0:04:34It's incredible. It's one of the most volatile and delicate clays

0:04:34 > 0:04:36to work with. If it's too thin,

0:04:36 > 0:04:38it's going to be too delicate to actually even handle.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41But if it's too thick, you're not going to get that translucency,

0:04:41 > 0:04:43which is what we're really looking for.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Whether they go simple or whether they go complicated,

0:04:46 > 0:04:48we want to see perfection.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53For the grand final, the potters can make their lights

0:04:53 > 0:04:55using any technique they choose.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57I chose a slab build for this challenge,

0:04:57 > 0:05:00which I think Kate will be surprised to hear me say.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02She's converted me over to the dark side.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05Quite a big build, so, you know, I need some tall pieces,

0:05:05 > 0:05:07and it's quite hard to throw that on a wheel.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12While Ryan rolls out slabs, Clover's at the extruder...

0:05:13 > 0:05:15- STRAINING:- Push!

0:05:15 > 0:05:18..preparing coils of clay for a technique that won her

0:05:18 > 0:05:20Pot Of The Week in the quarterfinal.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22The coiling I did for the Russian doll

0:05:22 > 0:05:26definitely gave me a good chance to practise coiling.

0:05:26 > 0:05:27Ah.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Richard's gone for throwing!

0:05:29 > 0:05:32It's what people feel comfortable with.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34And this is what I feel comfortable with.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37I'm hoping it's a good idea, throwing,

0:05:37 > 0:05:39but we'll see very shortly.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43It's really hard to handle it.

0:05:44 > 0:05:45It's very putty-like.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49Ooh, whoa, whoa, whoa. Sh!

0:05:49 > 0:05:52HE SIGHS

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Oh, I hate this clay already.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Look at that.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03If Ryan can roll out a usable slab,

0:06:03 > 0:06:05he'll make multiple porcelain pipes

0:06:05 > 0:06:08and hang them to look like a church organ.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12To create the shape he's looking for, he's using cardboard formers,

0:06:12 > 0:06:15which he's wrapped in a familiar face.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17I've put my grandma on here.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19She gave me really good luck in the first episode,

0:06:19 > 0:06:23so I brought her back in to give me some more luck for the final.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28I'm going to wrap porcelain round them to get that shape.

0:06:29 > 0:06:30Bye-bye, Grandma.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36- Ryan.- Hello!- Congratulations on getting through to the final.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38I know! I can't believe it. It's crazy.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Did you tell the main lady in your life, your lovely grandma?

0:06:41 > 0:06:44I haven't told her yet. She's in here somewhere.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46I've used her inside of the wrapping.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48Have you used porcelain before?

0:06:48 > 0:06:49No, never used porcelain before.

0:06:49 > 0:06:50I'm learning the hard way.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52- It's a weird one, isn't it? - It's insane.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54It's something completely different.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56I think it's going to be something grand - that's the idea -

0:06:56 > 0:06:59so the thing that I come up with was church organs,

0:06:59 > 0:07:01with these sort of metallic edges.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Rather than sound coming out of them, I'm going to have light coming out of them.

0:07:04 > 0:07:05- Well done.- That's the idea.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12Clover's also using a former to coil the main structure of her design.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16I'm making a pendant light,

0:07:16 > 0:07:19inspired by honeybee, beehive.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22My design is two bowl shapes.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25The only thing that I can find and is a round shape is a barbecue.

0:07:27 > 0:07:28Thank you, Tesco.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34Clover's supermarket barbecue will help create

0:07:34 > 0:07:36the basic shape of her beehive.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40Wrapped around each globe will be a swirling porcelain ribbon,

0:07:40 > 0:07:42from which a swarm of bees will hang.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46The globes will be elaborately carved and decorated

0:07:46 > 0:07:48to give a honey glow.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51I wonder if you've ever seen light coming through from the honeycomb.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55It gives this rich, gold colour, and the layers of honeycomb

0:07:55 > 0:07:59just give the light a lot more interesting feature.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01It's really beautiful.

0:08:01 > 0:08:06Like Clover, Richard's also hoping to bring nature into his design.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09My inspiration is autumn. You know, you get some lovely patterns

0:08:09 > 0:08:11off autumnal leaves as they fall down.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14That's what I'm going to hope to catch.

0:08:14 > 0:08:19Richard's lights will feature 100 handmade autumnal glazed leaves,

0:08:19 > 0:08:23drifting down from a canopy made from a giant ring of porcelain.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Obviously, you've got these leaves dangling down.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28We don't want to end up with a mobile.

0:08:28 > 0:08:29- OK?- No, I understand that.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33What I'm very conscious of - that there is enough leaves for both.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35You know they've got to be twin light features.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Are you going to have the lengths of the leaves exactly the same?

0:08:38 > 0:08:40The brief were identical, and that's what they'll be.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43- Wow!- Well done, Richard. - Sticking to the brief.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44- OK.- He's a right swot.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46He's good, isn't he? He's a finalist - he's got to be.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Whatever design the potters have chosen...

0:08:55 > 0:08:57..they have one common aim...

0:08:57 > 0:08:59I kind of want a little bit of translucency.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03To make the porcelain as thin as possible.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05If it's too thick, the light won't shine through it.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07But the thinner it gets...

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Sticking to the rolling pin.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11..the more fragile it becomes.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22Got a bit of a...

0:09:22 > 0:09:24sag here, which needs sorting out.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Do not overwork it, Clover.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Do not overwork it.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Push and pull, Ryan. Push and pull.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41Having finished coiling her barbecue-shaped globes,

0:09:41 > 0:09:45Clover begins the most elaborate part of her design -

0:09:45 > 0:09:47the twirling ribbon.

0:09:47 > 0:09:52It's very scary, making such a delicate make in the final.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55There is really no gap for mistake.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58It's really fragile, as you can see - the edge is already breaking.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03- Clover.- Hello.- Are you having fun with this porcelain?

0:10:03 > 0:10:05This porcelain is really hard to use.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07It's so different.

0:10:07 > 0:10:08Are you making this into one piece?

0:10:08 > 0:10:12Cos, you know, porcelain has this incredible fragility.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14Yeah, I'm worrying about it now.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17If this concept survives, it'll look quite stunning.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20But you've obviously got to balance that with the practicalities

0:10:20 > 0:10:23- of the actual making.- Did you do a bit of research, Clover,

0:10:23 > 0:10:26on porcelain before you decided on this shape?

0:10:26 > 0:10:29- No.- Right.- So...

0:10:29 > 0:10:31You've just got to think about it.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40- Ryan, so busy.- Busy, busy, busy.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Are you quite pleased you went for quite a simple...

0:10:46 > 0:10:48It's quite a simple technique.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51Mind you, I say that - is it not? But what I mean is, it's just...

0:10:51 > 0:10:54You're just repeating, and then afterwards you can build it.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Repetitive, yeah. Yeah, it's very repetitive.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58There's a lot of thought gone into it, but, yeah,

0:10:58 > 0:11:00it is sort of simple but effective.

0:11:00 > 0:11:05But one finalist's design is already proving far from simple,

0:11:05 > 0:11:07and rather less than effective.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10I want to give up my design, honestly.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12There's nothing I can do.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15There's nothing I can do.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18Potters, you've got one hour left.

0:11:21 > 0:11:22So I've firmed the canopies now.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25They've got to dry, and then we can straighten them up.

0:11:25 > 0:11:30Now, what we move to are the leaves.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33So I shall be cutting quite a few of those.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38With time running out, Clover's made a decision.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42Instead of having the thin ribbon, I'm just having patches,

0:11:42 > 0:11:46and I'm just pressing this honeycomb shape onto it.

0:11:46 > 0:11:47It's always going to be a risk.

0:11:47 > 0:11:52I mean, this is the first time I changed my designs halfway through.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54But, again, this is the final.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57It's a lot tougher than all the other challenges.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06RICHARD HUMS, SARA JOINS IN

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Oh, you do sing beautifully as you work, Richard.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11- I've always said that. - That's very kind of you.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13You could do an album of Richard Sings.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17Good lord, no. The world's not ready for that, I can assure you.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20I just need as many as possible, really,

0:12:20 > 0:12:22just so it looks grand and big.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Production line.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29As Ryan ploughs on,

0:12:29 > 0:12:33Clover's back on track, and there's a hive of activity at her desk.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36The bees are beginning.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Yeah, they are butterflies at the moment.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41I'm chopping them and forcing them to become a bee.

0:12:41 > 0:12:42Oh, it's against nature.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- Messing with evolution.- Sorry!

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Potters, 30 minutes left.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52I wish I have more time.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56Poor bees. Sorry - Mummy can't make you any fancier.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59Just deal with it.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04Just giving my canopy a little bit of attention.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06It's dried up quite a bit.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Getting it...level.

0:13:09 > 0:13:10Straightening the sides up.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15Potters, you've got ten minutes left, OK?

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Crikey.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21Before the potters can refine their light features,

0:13:21 > 0:13:24the porcelain will need to dry.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26So these formers are coming out.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Removing the formers will speed this process up.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33But it's a gamble, as without the support,

0:13:33 > 0:13:35the moist clay could collapse.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Boom!

0:13:39 > 0:13:40It's too soft.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Still too soft - can't turn over just yet.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47(Four, five, six, seven, eight.)

0:13:47 > 0:13:49As porcelain is so delicate,

0:13:49 > 0:13:53the potters leave their pieces away from the heat of the drying room

0:13:53 > 0:13:54to prevent them from cracking.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58Wrapping them in clingfilm will keep them moist

0:13:58 > 0:13:59for the trimming stage.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01Oh, sorry, Clover.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04OK, my bright young things, two minutes left.

0:14:05 > 0:14:06- Richard?- Oh.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Yeah, oh, absolutely.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13Ten, nine, eight,

0:14:13 > 0:14:16seven, six,

0:14:16 > 0:14:18five, four,

0:14:18 > 0:14:22three, two, one.

0:14:23 > 0:14:27Well done. See you back here for the next challenge. Thank you.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29MUSIC: House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals

0:14:29 > 0:14:31As the light features stiffen off,

0:14:31 > 0:14:35we're heading to the land of the rising sun for the final Throw Down.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41The judges want the potters to throw a rather simple shape -

0:14:41 > 0:14:43but it won't be as straightforward as it sounds.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52Today, Kate and Keith would like you to throw Japanese lanterns.

0:14:52 > 0:14:54Keith, are you going to do the honours and give us a quick demo?

0:14:54 > 0:14:59Absolutely. Basically, a Japanese lantern is a simple...

0:14:59 > 0:15:01cylinder.

0:15:01 > 0:15:02So you want to centre your clay.

0:15:06 > 0:15:07Get it nice and even.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12And pull it up into a nice cylinder.

0:15:16 > 0:15:20And then I want you to make sure that you rib off the throwing lines.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24Sponge out the middle...

0:15:25 > 0:15:28..making sure that you look after that rim.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32And wire it off.

0:15:34 > 0:15:35Nice and simple.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37However, it's the final.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40It seems almost too simple somehow.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42Well, there's a twist.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45Because it's a Japanese lantern...

0:15:45 > 0:15:47In Japan, they throw the other way.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51We're going to turn the direction of the wheel of the other way round,

0:15:51 > 0:15:53so you're going to be throwing in reverse.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55Ah.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59And the reason for this challenge is that it's really, really hard.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01THEY CHUCKLE

0:16:01 > 0:16:04Everything that your body is telling you,

0:16:04 > 0:16:07the memory of you throwing on the wheel,

0:16:07 > 0:16:10it's completely and utterly different.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Imagine learning the guitar,

0:16:12 > 0:16:15and then all of a sudden you wake up one day and you're Jimi Hendrix,

0:16:15 > 0:16:17and you have to learn the other way round.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21You really have to be very, very conscious of what you're doing.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24- Make life interesting. - CLOVER:- Ah!

0:16:24 > 0:16:28And when you come to use the rib, that's even stranger.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32Very evil of you.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Look, you're finalists - you know what I mean?

0:16:34 > 0:16:35We've got to put you through it.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38This is probably the hardest challenge I think I've ever done.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41Wow. Well done, Keith. OK.

0:16:41 > 0:16:42Potters, you have ten minutes

0:16:42 > 0:16:46to throw as many Japanese lanterns as you can

0:16:46 > 0:16:48with the wheel moving in the opposite direction

0:16:48 > 0:16:50to what you're used to. Good luck.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52It's your final Throw Down.

0:16:52 > 0:16:53Time starts now.

0:16:55 > 0:16:56Aargh!

0:16:56 > 0:16:59- The minute your hands hit that clay, it's weird, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:17:01 > 0:17:02Really weird.

0:17:02 > 0:17:03Looking good, Clover.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07- How's it feeling?- Weird.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11I have to slow the wheel down a lot more than usually.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16Get control of that top rim there, Richard.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18Yeah, we want a nice, clean rim.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Everything's so different with this.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23It catches on different parts of your hand.

0:17:23 > 0:17:24It's just bizarre.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26Come on, Ryan, let's have that a bit taller, those cylinders.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30- It's weird. - Go on, Clover, get it off the wheel.

0:17:31 > 0:17:35- Well done.- Really think how you're applying the pressure to the clay.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41- KATE:- Focus in on yourselves. Concentrate.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47- Nice one, Ryan.- Come on, Richard, catch up with the others.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50- Oh, you...- Oh, bad luck.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52Clover, concentrate.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55You're halfway through your time, potters. Five minutes left.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59They're looking a bit wide, Clover.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02If you can keep your head while all about you

0:18:02 > 0:18:05- are losing theirs... - Is going in reverse.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07Three minutes now, potters.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09This is your final Throw Down.

0:18:09 > 0:18:10Come on, push yourselves.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12Come on, Clover, try and get another one out.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Richard's actually throwing from the inside.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17I'm throwing from any side!

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Is it getting easier with each one?

0:18:20 > 0:18:22- No way.- Is it not?

0:18:22 > 0:18:24Potters, one minute left.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27Clover's on five.

0:18:27 > 0:18:28Ryan's on six.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Richard's on...

0:18:31 > 0:18:32two and a bit.

0:18:34 > 0:18:35Focus. Focus.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38- Come on.- Come on!

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Ten, nine,

0:18:41 > 0:18:44eight, seven, six...

0:18:44 > 0:18:47- KEITH AND SARA:- Five, four, three,

0:18:47 > 0:18:50two, one.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52Time's up.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54Step back from your wonky wheels.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57Well done. That is your last ever Throw Down. Whoo!

0:18:58 > 0:19:01- Well done.- That was horrid.

0:19:01 > 0:19:02That was evil.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04Lot of fun. Lot of fun!

0:19:05 > 0:19:08Kate and Keith are looking for perfectly formed

0:19:08 > 0:19:11cylindrical Japanese lanterns.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14Any that fall short will be thrown into the bin of doom.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20I would have liked to have seen them slightly thinner, slightly narrower.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22Failure.

0:19:22 > 0:19:23That one's no good, either.

0:19:25 > 0:19:26You did say "quality", didn't you?

0:19:26 > 0:19:28- I heard you say "quality". - Quality, yeah.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30That's no good, either.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33You've really managed to rib up the side of these ones.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36- Four. Not bad at all.- Thank you. - Thanks, Clover.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40JUDGES CHUCKLE

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Judges, you mustn't giggle, OK?

0:19:42 > 0:19:43It's very unprofessional.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46Well, this is a total and utter failure.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49My sacrificial lamb, that one.

0:19:49 > 0:19:53I don't know what's going on with this rim here. That's going in.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56- Oh!- Oh!- No more.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58- No more!- Let's drag him away. Distract him with something shiny.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01Move him away! OK, thanks very much, Richard.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04- Got to look inside these eight. - Yeah, there's a dodgy one there.

0:20:04 > 0:20:05- Oh, dear me!- Ryan!

0:20:05 > 0:20:07There's no bottom on that one.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09- That's really no good. - Can you peek through it?

0:20:10 > 0:20:12- And what's this? - That was my last one.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14That's going in, as well.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17And that's really no good.

0:20:17 > 0:20:18Look what's just happened.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20- Did you do that?- No, it's too thin.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24- We did say, a nice, even, good, flat bottom.- You did.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26- Nicely done. Thank you very much. - Thank you.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31So, has anyone managed to impress in a brutal Throw Down?

0:20:32 > 0:20:37On the final Throw Down, the person in third place is...

0:20:39 > 0:20:41- ..Richard!- I want a recount.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43So, in second place...

0:20:46 > 0:20:47..with four pots...

0:20:51 > 0:20:52..was Clover.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54And so the winner today is Ryan.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56Whoo!

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Ryan, congratulations. Well done, all of you.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04You can go and get a quick breather now. We'll see you back here shortly,

0:21:04 > 0:21:07when your light fittings will be ready to be finessed.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10- Well done!- Congratulations!

0:21:10 > 0:21:11Just won the final Throw Down.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14It's sad to say we're not going to do another one but, yeah,

0:21:14 > 0:21:16I managed to win it, so I was really happy.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19Left-handed throwing didn't really do it for me.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21I struggled all the way through and, basically, got what I deserved.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24I'm bang in the middle!

0:21:24 > 0:21:26I just started getting a grip of this.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28Yeah, I would like to try that again at home.

0:21:28 > 0:21:29I'm very worried about Main Make.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33I just want to go straight back there to refine them right now.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39The components of their light features

0:21:39 > 0:21:41have been drying for four hours.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43I'm quite happy the way the leaves are at the moment.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46I only have a mere 101.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49The potters have two hours to finesse.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52This is a crucial moment to refine the edges,

0:21:52 > 0:21:56to thin it to the correct thickness so the translucency works later on.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59It really has to be done carefully.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01They're all still standing up, which is quite good.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04I didn't want any of them to slump because I took the formers out.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06They're all in one piece.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08I'm now just going to clean up all the edges.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10The clay is at its most delicate.

0:22:10 > 0:22:15It's still quite pliable but it'll remember any stresses or strains

0:22:15 > 0:22:18it's put under when it's being worked on.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21I'm just scared. It still feels so fragile.

0:22:26 > 0:22:30Unlike Ryan, Clover left her pieces to dry inside their formers...

0:22:31 > 0:22:33Wow, super-soft.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40..so the clay is still moist and very delicate,

0:22:40 > 0:22:42and Clover has to cut her intricate design

0:22:42 > 0:22:45into its incredibly soft surface.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49I need to carve out the shape of the honeycomb -

0:22:49 > 0:22:53some cut through, some just scratched through -

0:22:53 > 0:22:56to make it really translucent.

0:22:56 > 0:23:00I don't know how much I can do, given that it's so wet.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04I'm just trying to be as careful as I can.

0:23:07 > 0:23:08No dramas, Ryan?

0:23:08 > 0:23:10- Yeah, all OK, mate, thank you. - Excellent.

0:23:10 > 0:23:14- What about you, Richard? You got any mishaps?- Well, we're looking...

0:23:14 > 0:23:19not too bad. Got a fair bit to do in pressing the pattern on the leaves.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21It really is head down and crack on.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25Let's give it a try.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28I've got a lot to do.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30I haven't got all day.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33The judges have tasked the potters with making the porcelain

0:23:33 > 0:23:36as translucent as it can be.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38I'm scratching the shape of the honeycomb.

0:23:38 > 0:23:43I want this area to be as thin as it can, really,

0:23:43 > 0:23:45for the light to come through.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Wow! This is so soft.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50I don't want to do any more.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53It's a case of, how thin do you dare go on the leaf?

0:23:53 > 0:23:56They may say it's not thin enough, which it quite possibly could be.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59But, you know, at this present second in time,

0:23:59 > 0:24:00it's as thin as I dare go.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07Ryan's hoping his organ pipes will play with the light even further.

0:24:07 > 0:24:11I'm using the slit off the former to cut the slit in the back.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13Just having that beam of light coming through, that crack,

0:24:13 > 0:24:15so you get light from all angles.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21Clover's also aiming to maximise the light.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24I'm going to pin holes into it, instead of scratching,

0:24:24 > 0:24:27because that's the top of the light.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29And I want it to come out...

0:24:30 > 0:24:31..as pinholes.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37Potters, you're halfway through your time now. You've got one hour left.

0:24:37 > 0:24:38It's always a race against time.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43They're not going to hang without any holes,

0:24:43 > 0:24:46so we've got to make sure everything's got a hole in it

0:24:46 > 0:24:49before it becomes brittle.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51I'm putting quite big holes in for wire.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54After abandoning her ribbon at the building stage,

0:24:54 > 0:24:58Clover's new design has left her with even more sections to perfect.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01I've still got a lot to do.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04I still have to sort out the 50 bees

0:25:04 > 0:25:09and make sure they have the holes in it, so they can be hung over.

0:25:09 > 0:25:13But Richard has more than just holes to worry about.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15His huge canopies need to be wired off

0:25:15 > 0:25:18to prevent them from cracking in the kiln.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20He should have wired off when he was throwing.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22He really should have done.

0:25:25 > 0:25:26And he's only got two.

0:25:28 > 0:25:32They've dried a bit. It always makes it harder to wire anything off.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41- Keep that wire down on the back, mate.- Yeah.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52Here we come.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56Next time, may I make a suggestion?

0:25:56 > 0:25:58- Yeah!- Wire it off when you're throwing it.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01- THEY CHUCKLE - Yeah, I might take you up on that.

0:26:01 > 0:26:02All right.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09Dryness isn't just an issue for Richard.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11SHE GASPS

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Oh, no! It's just crumbled.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19Well, my bees will not have holes in it now,

0:26:19 > 0:26:23cos they've gone past the stage to manipulate.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26Luckily, they have the wings, which I can just tie the string over.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Yeah, they're going to be more freestyle now.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32Potters, you've got just five minutes left now.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35You need to start thinking about getting stuff in the drying room.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38So if you've got loads of pieces, like 100 leaves...

0:26:38 > 0:26:40I hope that wasn't aimed at me!

0:26:43 > 0:26:45One minute left now.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Ten, nine,

0:26:57 > 0:26:59eight, seven,

0:26:59 > 0:27:01six, five,

0:27:01 > 0:27:03four, three,

0:27:03 > 0:27:05two, one.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09Time is up! Finalists, well done!

0:27:09 > 0:27:10The nightmare's over!

0:27:10 > 0:27:12THEY CHEER

0:27:12 > 0:27:14Well done, guys!

0:27:18 > 0:27:22I am happy to say I know nothing about what happens to porcelain,

0:27:22 > 0:27:26so I'm going to be able to sleep well while it fires.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28Wow, this task is crazy!

0:27:28 > 0:27:31But human beings are there to make the impossible possible,

0:27:31 > 0:27:33so there's no excuse not to try.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35They look quite good, I think.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37All the right shape and standing up tall.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40So let's see how the next stage goes.

0:27:40 > 0:27:41I shall go home.

0:27:41 > 0:27:43I've got a pub to look after.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46I'll go back and see what disasters have befallen it while I'm there.

0:27:46 > 0:27:48I believe it's still standing.

0:27:48 > 0:27:50The potters' work will be dried for 24 hours

0:27:50 > 0:27:55under the watchful eye of Rich, but he has some big concerns.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58Really, really disappointed that Richard has chosen

0:27:58 > 0:28:01to leave his big pieces on these wooden bats.

0:28:01 > 0:28:05The problem is that this porcelain just shrinks so dramatically

0:28:05 > 0:28:08while it's drying and particularly while it's in the kiln.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11So if this doesn't crack under the stress of that contorting

0:28:11 > 0:28:14while it's drying, it certainly will do during the firing.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19As their work is bisque fired and cooled,

0:28:19 > 0:28:22the potters face a nail-biting 48-hour wait at home

0:28:22 > 0:28:25with their family and friends.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29I'm very proud of Richard getting to the final.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31I think it's a dream come true for him.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33There's nothing, really, he can't do.

0:28:33 > 0:28:38He can put the cellar right, he can put the kegs right.

0:28:38 > 0:28:41But this would be his biggest achievement ever.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47I would be absolutely delighted if he won The Great Pottery Throw Down

0:28:47 > 0:28:49because it will prove to him that,

0:28:49 > 0:28:53actually, he is as good as he is. I think he's probably

0:28:53 > 0:28:55the one person who doesn't really believe it.

0:28:55 > 0:28:58It would be lovely to be able to say, "Look, there you go.

0:28:58 > 0:29:00"Everybody else thinks you're great, too."

0:29:01 > 0:29:04With Clover's family being so far away,

0:29:04 > 0:29:06I can only imagine how proud they are.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18To come to a new country and start a new hobby,

0:29:18 > 0:29:21which is quite traditional for her country, in a way...

0:29:28 > 0:29:30MUSIC: Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks

0:29:30 > 0:29:32I bet it's been hard work.

0:29:32 > 0:29:34- Yeah, yeah.- And long hours.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37I'm very proud of Ryan.

0:29:37 > 0:29:38If Ryan does win,

0:29:38 > 0:29:41I'd be very excited and, of course,

0:29:41 > 0:29:45all the old ladies at the club that I go to would be excited, too!

0:29:47 > 0:29:49After a 24-hour bisque firing,

0:29:49 > 0:29:53the light features are ready for the returning potters to decorate.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58- I've got an awful lot to do.- You've got 100 leaves, haven't you?- Yeah.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00Well, I might have predominantly less, depending...

0:30:00 > 0:30:02You might have 200 - they've broken in half!

0:30:02 > 0:30:05THEY CHUCKLE

0:30:05 > 0:30:08How they fared could be the difference between

0:30:08 > 0:30:10disappointment and being crowned champion.

0:30:16 > 0:30:17Ooh!

0:30:21 > 0:30:23Everything's come out in one piece.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26There's slight distortion in a few pieces but it's quite minimal.

0:30:26 > 0:30:29So I'm fairly happy.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32How's yours come up, Clover? All good?

0:30:32 > 0:30:34No breaks, crackings?

0:30:34 > 0:30:38Just small, small things on the small pieces, but it's all right.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42HE SIGHS HEAVILY

0:30:44 > 0:30:45Oh, dear!

0:30:45 > 0:30:47HE BLOWS RASPBERRIES

0:30:47 > 0:30:50I've got massive cracks in both pieces.

0:30:51 > 0:30:55Probably about the worst time it could happen, but...

0:30:55 > 0:30:57- What's happened?- They've all gone. - Oh, no!

0:30:59 > 0:31:02- Oh, mate!- Titanic, I think, has hit an iceberg.

0:31:02 > 0:31:05Oh! It's such a shame.

0:31:05 > 0:31:06- Sheesh!- Yeah.

0:31:07 > 0:31:11See what we can salvage, but it's not good.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13I'm not quite sure what to do at the moment.

0:31:17 > 0:31:19Some of them have come out really thin, which is quite nice.

0:31:19 > 0:31:23Hopefully, there's going to be a bit of translucency there in the clay.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26Clover, if you keep sanding, you can make it thinner.

0:31:28 > 0:31:30But I can't see any light through.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32Did you see a light through? Maybe you're doing...

0:31:32 > 0:31:34Yeah, I can see yours.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38I think I've come up with a plan of action.

0:31:38 > 0:31:41Carry on glazing the canopy as I would normally,

0:31:41 > 0:31:42and then after it's fired,

0:31:42 > 0:31:46put a bat here and glue it together that way.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48We will overcome our endeavours.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53So, Kate, decorating. Quite a few examples here

0:31:53 > 0:31:57where they haven't used any glaze at all but the finish is perfect.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00I want to see a bold use of glaze.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03I don't mind whether it's got lots of colour, whether it's transparent,

0:32:03 > 0:32:07but it's got to be sure and positive and it's got to bring something to

0:32:07 > 0:32:08the whole piece.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11They can't just do a little band of transparent, can they?

0:32:11 > 0:32:14If that little band of transparent has been executed

0:32:14 > 0:32:18to the best possible way, then I'm OK with that.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20Right, I'm going to go get some glazing.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23Get glazing!

0:32:29 > 0:32:31Obviously, I don't want it to be too boring

0:32:31 > 0:32:34cos, when the lights switch off, if you see something white like that,

0:32:34 > 0:32:35it's just boring, isn't it?

0:32:35 > 0:32:37So definitely a bit of colour.

0:32:37 > 0:32:41But when making a light, it's not just colour that's important.

0:32:41 > 0:32:46- Are you having a glossy finish or a mattone?- Bit of both.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49Their choice of finish can have a huge impact on how the light plays

0:32:49 > 0:32:52on the surface of their pieces.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55The inside has got to reflect light,

0:32:55 > 0:32:59so, obviously, if you put a nice, shiny glaze on the inside,

0:32:59 > 0:33:02it going to reflect the light.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04It's going to be this way up

0:33:04 > 0:33:06and each cylinder's going to have a light bulb in it

0:33:06 > 0:33:09and there's going to be metallic glazes on here

0:33:09 > 0:33:11which is going to bounce out the light, hopefully.

0:33:12 > 0:33:15- Hello, Ryan.- Hiya! I've made another tool, you might be happy to see.

0:33:15 > 0:33:17Oh, a tool. I love your tools.

0:33:17 > 0:33:20It sort of goes in and helps me glaze a nice, neat line.

0:33:20 > 0:33:23Wow! So that slides up and down to make it bigger and tighter.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26- Bigger and smaller, yeah.- What's that a bit of? A windscreen wiper?

0:33:26 > 0:33:28Windscreen wiper round some wire, yeah.

0:33:28 > 0:33:29Wow! That's ingenious.

0:33:29 > 0:33:31Yeah, I'll have that one.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33And you're just going to glaze just a section...

0:33:33 > 0:33:35Just the tips. Yeah.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38- ..of the inside? You've got a great plan, haven't you?- I've got a plan.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41- And we know that ceramics never... - Ah!- Oh!

0:33:41 > 0:33:43- That wasn't meant to happen! - No, Ryan!

0:33:44 > 0:33:46Porcelain's so delicate when it's biscuit fired.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48- That's what happens when I talk. - Oh, no!

0:33:48 > 0:33:51Stop talking and get on with your glaze plan.

0:33:51 > 0:33:54- I hope it all works out...- Comes out.- ..how you think it's going to.

0:33:54 > 0:33:56- Thanks, Ryan.- Thanks, Kate.

0:34:00 > 0:34:07Whilst Ryan is hoping less is more, Clover is leaving nothing untouched.

0:34:07 > 0:34:10I'm just oxide washing to enhance the texture

0:34:10 > 0:34:14and make them look more like a honey beehive.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19Potters, you're halfway through your time now.

0:34:19 > 0:34:21You've got one hour left.

0:34:21 > 0:34:22- SHE GASPS - Oh, my God!

0:34:24 > 0:34:25- Hey, Ryan.- Hello.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28Didn't Kate come over and smash summat before in a fit of fury?

0:34:28 > 0:34:30- That's the rumour going round. - Shall we say that?

0:34:30 > 0:34:31Yeah, it's Kate's fault.

0:34:31 > 0:34:34- Are you going to fix it? - I'm going to fix it.- Excellent.

0:34:36 > 0:34:40I'm hoping to add some of the coppery colours to give it

0:34:40 > 0:34:43that hint of the autumn leaves.

0:34:49 > 0:34:52As Richard gets on with his 100 leaves...

0:34:52 > 0:34:54- Can I get some gold? - Yeah, go for it, babe.

0:34:54 > 0:34:57..Clover moves on to her swarm of bees.

0:34:58 > 0:35:01One side will be, like, honey colour and the other side will be metallic,

0:35:01 > 0:35:03like, golden. So it'll bounce the light

0:35:03 > 0:35:05a little bit after I hang them.

0:35:06 > 0:35:09Potters, you've got ten minutes to tools down, OK?

0:35:11 > 0:35:13Do not waste time, Clover.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16SHE MUTTERS

0:35:18 > 0:35:20This is a transparent glaze.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23It will make it look more like the honey dripping out.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26Clover, are they going to match?

0:35:26 > 0:35:29You never know how they're going to drip but they should be all right.

0:35:29 > 0:35:32- Got to get them as matching as you can, though.- Yeah.

0:35:32 > 0:35:34I'm just cleaning up any of the glaze.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36Bits might be falling off and stuff.

0:35:38 > 0:35:40One minute left now, potters. One minute left.

0:35:46 > 0:35:47Ten, nine,

0:35:47 > 0:35:50eight, seven,

0:35:50 > 0:35:52six, five,

0:35:52 > 0:35:54four, three,

0:35:54 > 0:35:56two, one.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59Tools down. Well done.

0:35:59 > 0:36:00And breathe!

0:36:05 > 0:36:08It's all finished now! We've finished it!

0:36:08 > 0:36:12Yay! I decorated it with the best knowledge I have,

0:36:12 > 0:36:14as close to the original design I have.

0:36:14 > 0:36:16So hopefully they'll shine.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20Yeah, I actually noticed Richard and Clover applying quite a lot of glaze.

0:36:20 > 0:36:22For me, my design's quite slick and minimal, really,

0:36:22 > 0:36:26so I'm trying to make the glaze complement it, rather than fight it.

0:36:26 > 0:36:28But you don't know until it comes out of the kiln.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30You just don't know.

0:36:30 > 0:36:31Lovely.

0:36:31 > 0:36:32Could have been a lot worse.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34Could have been a lot better!

0:36:34 > 0:36:37But, hey, I'm not a quitter. I'm not going to give up.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40I could rise to the occasion - the phoenix out of the flames -

0:36:40 > 0:36:45who knows? These guys have got to earn the right to win that trophy.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47I'm not going to lie down.

0:36:48 > 0:36:51As the light features have their final firing,

0:36:51 > 0:36:52the finalists face a Spot Test

0:36:52 > 0:36:55that's has been challenging potters for millennia.

0:36:56 > 0:37:00And all their skills will be laid bare.

0:37:00 > 0:37:04Potters, welcome to your final-ever Spot Test.

0:37:04 > 0:37:08Now, Kate and Keith would like you to sculpt a torso.

0:37:08 > 0:37:12But not any old dad bod - we want the perfect torso.

0:37:12 > 0:37:13So to help you to do that,

0:37:13 > 0:37:15please welcome our very special guest today,

0:37:15 > 0:37:19ice skater and personal trainer Sylvain Longchambon.

0:37:19 > 0:37:22Welcome, Sylvain. APPLAUSE

0:37:22 > 0:37:25- Bonjour.- Bonjour. Ca va? - Ah, oui, ca va.

0:37:25 > 0:37:28Please would you reveal your perfect torso for us, Sylvain?

0:37:31 > 0:37:33- RICHARD:- Calm down, Clover!

0:37:35 > 0:37:38Now, Sylvain here is going to be your life model today

0:37:38 > 0:37:40because under here you each have...

0:37:42 > 0:37:43..one of these!

0:37:43 > 0:37:49And you need to sculpt this into the perfect image of Sylvain here, OK?

0:37:49 > 0:37:51We want to see an an anatomical copy.

0:37:51 > 0:37:54We're not looking for artistic rendition here.

0:37:54 > 0:37:58You will be manipulating this cylinder to create that muscle tone

0:37:58 > 0:38:02and what we're really looking for is that really good, fine detail.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04OK, Sylvain, would you like to go on the plinth?

0:38:04 > 0:38:06Get yourself comfy and in position. Thank you.

0:38:06 > 0:38:10'The final Spot Test will be judged blind.'

0:38:10 > 0:38:13Right, judges, please leave the pottery.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16'Kate and Keith won't know whose torso is whose.'

0:38:16 > 0:38:20Potters, you have 90 minutes to sculpt your torso.

0:38:20 > 0:38:21Time starts now.

0:38:25 > 0:38:29We're looking for an anatomically correct torso.

0:38:29 > 0:38:33Proportion, size is key to this challenge.

0:38:33 > 0:38:39We've been making the human form out of clay for over 25,000 years.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42I've never worked with this consistency of clay before.

0:38:42 > 0:38:47But it was the ancient Greeks around 4,500 years ago

0:38:47 > 0:38:50who were the first to represent the body in an exact way.

0:38:51 > 0:38:53I've done still life drawing before

0:38:53 > 0:38:56but I've never sculpted a human figure before, no.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58I actually quite like it.

0:38:58 > 0:39:00Sculpting is something I've never done.

0:39:00 > 0:39:04I've seen quite a variety of torsos come through the pub.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08Especially if it's hot, they tend not to want to put their clothes on.

0:39:08 > 0:39:09IN FRENCH:

0:39:21 > 0:39:24Make sure you warm up your hands first, Richard.

0:39:24 > 0:39:25RICHARD LAUGHS

0:39:25 > 0:39:29They've got to really look at Sylvain's shape, right up close,

0:39:29 > 0:39:31measuring height, width,

0:39:31 > 0:39:33checking where the chest definition is

0:39:33 > 0:39:35and translating the proportions to the cylinder.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40His body's quite symmetrical, so I'm measuring

0:39:40 > 0:39:43with a tool from the pecs down,

0:39:43 > 0:39:46working on the chest and sort of dividing up the central line.

0:39:52 > 0:39:56I actually quite like it. I actually enjoy pushing the clay around.

0:39:56 > 0:39:59For me, it's a bit more like being on the wheel, in that

0:39:59 > 0:40:03you've got something to start with and manipulate straightaway, so you see the results instantly.

0:40:04 > 0:40:07There is a lot of detail in the muscle.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09I don't want it to look too still.

0:40:09 > 0:40:11I want to put a bit of life into it.

0:40:22 > 0:40:25You know you are supposed to be modelling it on Sylvain, not yourself, you know?

0:40:25 > 0:40:26Well...mirror image.

0:40:28 > 0:40:30Clearly works out, doesn't he?

0:40:30 > 0:40:34Yeah, but nothing you ain't seen when Ryan's posing about.

0:40:34 > 0:40:36- Really?- When he's got his top off, you know?

0:40:36 > 0:40:38How are you approaching it?

0:40:38 > 0:40:40Well, I thought I would have a hands-on approach.

0:40:40 > 0:40:43On Sylvain or on the clay?

0:40:43 > 0:40:44I prefer the clay, really.

0:40:44 > 0:40:48There may be a few who'd prefer to have a hands-on approach on Sylvain.

0:40:48 > 0:40:51- THEY CLEAR THROATS Clover!- Yes!

0:40:51 > 0:40:52Now, now, come on.

0:40:54 > 0:40:56Potters, you're halfway through your time now.

0:40:56 > 0:40:59Just 45 minutes to complete your bodies beautiful.

0:41:02 > 0:41:04- Does it hurt?- Nah!

0:41:06 > 0:41:10The potters have been given an additional 5kg of terracotta clay

0:41:10 > 0:41:14to bulk out their torso and add the anatomical detail.

0:41:14 > 0:41:16I really do want to get the neck muscle.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19- It's so beautiful, this neck muscle. - And the collarbone...

0:41:20 > 0:41:24But the more clay they add, the more fragile the torso will become.

0:41:24 > 0:41:27See, it's already sagging if I don't support here.

0:41:29 > 0:41:30Stop sagging!

0:41:30 > 0:41:32No!

0:41:32 > 0:41:34Do you want me to do a few push-ups?

0:41:35 > 0:41:38It's not you, it's the stupid clay!

0:41:38 > 0:41:42Look, it's dripping, because it keeps sagging.

0:41:42 > 0:41:44Too much clay at the top.

0:41:45 > 0:41:50There is one way to save it - to cut off the arms.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52Oh, dear. I'm glad you're not my surgeon -

0:41:52 > 0:41:53straight in there with a scalpel.

0:41:54 > 0:41:56Gosh!

0:41:56 > 0:41:58You poor thing!

0:42:02 > 0:42:04All right, let's have a look at these nipples.

0:42:04 > 0:42:06How are you approaching the nipples?

0:42:06 > 0:42:10Just trying to practise them, really, and get them in there.

0:42:11 > 0:42:12Look at those nipples!

0:42:12 > 0:42:14It makes me want to go and have a game of tiddlywinks.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16Look at those beauties!

0:42:16 > 0:42:19It's nice to see a bit of hair, isn't it, instead of all waxed?

0:42:19 > 0:42:21- A bit more manly, isn't it? - A bit more manly, a bit better,

0:42:21 > 0:42:24a bit more au naturale. A bit of French there for you, Sylvain.

0:42:26 > 0:42:29Ten minutes left to sculpt their torsos.

0:42:29 > 0:42:32And Clover has done some reconstructive surgery.

0:42:33 > 0:42:37- I've made a comeback. - Yeah, you've rescued it. Well done.

0:42:37 > 0:42:39Gosh, that was terrible but you've actually pulled it back.

0:42:39 > 0:42:41It was really bad, wasn't it?

0:42:41 > 0:42:43It was really bad! It was like, "No!"

0:42:47 > 0:42:50Just one minute left to titivate your torsos.

0:42:55 > 0:42:56Final touch.

0:42:58 > 0:43:00Ten, nine,

0:43:00 > 0:43:02eight, seven,

0:43:02 > 0:43:04six, five,

0:43:04 > 0:43:06four, three,

0:43:06 > 0:43:08two, one.

0:43:08 > 0:43:09Tools down.

0:43:11 > 0:43:12Well done.

0:43:12 > 0:43:15OK, potters, bring up your bodies for judging, please.

0:43:15 > 0:43:17Put them on the front.

0:43:17 > 0:43:22Kate and Keith are looking for an exact replica of Sylvain's torso.

0:43:22 > 0:43:23- Hello!- Hi, Sylvain.

0:43:24 > 0:43:27Well, what a great set of torsos, you three.

0:43:27 > 0:43:28They really are fantastic.

0:43:28 > 0:43:31And they don't know whose body is whose.

0:43:31 > 0:43:33- Shall we take this one first?- Yeah.

0:43:33 > 0:43:35The proportion is good.

0:43:35 > 0:43:39Yeah, I think the size of the chest in relation to the stomach muscles

0:43:39 > 0:43:41is very, very good, indeed.

0:43:41 > 0:43:44And I'm really liking the belly button, as well.

0:43:44 > 0:43:46That's gorgeous, isn't it? And the way the hair has been

0:43:46 > 0:43:49- scratched onto the surface - it really works.- Mm.

0:43:49 > 0:43:51And so the middle one, the one without arms...

0:43:51 > 0:43:55You've got very strong lines on this one, very, very strong muscle tone.

0:43:55 > 0:43:58- It seems to be a bit squashed. - Well, interestingly enough,

0:43:58 > 0:44:02I think whoever's done this one may have cut something off.

0:44:02 > 0:44:06If you notice, it's actually shorter than the other two torsos, isn't it?

0:44:06 > 0:44:09So, this one - it has good height.

0:44:09 > 0:44:12I think it's kind of lacking in width on the shoulder,

0:44:12 > 0:44:13going into the waist.

0:44:13 > 0:44:16I would to have liked to have seen more chest coming out.

0:44:16 > 0:44:19Sylvain's pecs are very, very well accentuated.

0:44:19 > 0:44:21As for stature, it's really good, isn't it?

0:44:21 > 0:44:25- It's standing the straightest, and this one has the best posture.- Mm.

0:44:25 > 0:44:27They really are fantastic.

0:44:27 > 0:44:28They're too good in a way,

0:44:28 > 0:44:30aren't they? It's made your job very difficult.

0:44:30 > 0:44:32- Very, very hard.- Yeah.

0:44:32 > 0:44:36The judges will now rank the torsos from worst to best.

0:44:36 > 0:44:39In third place, it's this one here.

0:44:39 > 0:44:40- Whose is that?- That's mine.

0:44:40 > 0:44:42That's yours, Clover.

0:44:42 > 0:44:44It just seems to have lost height.

0:44:44 > 0:44:47It has lost a lot of height.

0:44:47 > 0:44:49So, in second place is...

0:44:52 > 0:44:56- ..this one.- Mine.- Richard! We love the way it was standing up.

0:44:56 > 0:44:59You've got the muscle tone right there and the stature was

0:44:59 > 0:45:01- really, really good. - And so the winner -

0:45:01 > 0:45:03and I think I know whose that is - is this one here.

0:45:05 > 0:45:08Well done! It's alive and the muscle definition

0:45:08 > 0:45:10was the best of the three.

0:45:10 > 0:45:11- Yeah, well done, Ryan.- Thank you.

0:45:12 > 0:45:14I won it, so super, super-happy.

0:45:14 > 0:45:17It's the last one, so it's nice to go out with a bang.

0:45:17 > 0:45:19I...finished...

0:45:19 > 0:45:21second! Yaargh!

0:45:23 > 0:45:27So gutted I lost half of it! Oh!

0:45:30 > 0:45:34It's the final day of The Great Pottery Throw Down.

0:45:34 > 0:45:38For Richard, Clover and Ryan,

0:45:38 > 0:45:42everything rests on how their light features have fared in the kiln.

0:45:48 > 0:45:50- RICH: Hello!- Hello!- How's it going?

0:45:50 > 0:45:52I'm feeling excited.

0:45:52 > 0:45:56It's the last time we're going to touch our make and assemble it.

0:45:56 > 0:45:57- Some of the bits are still a bit warm.- OK.

0:45:57 > 0:46:00So be tentative about how you touch them.

0:46:00 > 0:46:02I've got a lot of pendants to hang, so if any of them fall on the floor,

0:46:02 > 0:46:05it's going to be like shattered glass in, just, a million pieces.

0:46:05 > 0:46:07So, no dropping.

0:46:07 > 0:46:10Today, for me, is going to be like putting a jigsaw puzzle together.

0:46:10 > 0:46:12It's like playing poker.

0:46:12 > 0:46:14I've been dealt a dead man's hand

0:46:14 > 0:46:16and I've got to turn it into a straight.

0:46:20 > 0:46:21The glaze has turned out

0:46:21 > 0:46:23a lot different than I thought it would be.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26Ta-da! How lovely they are!

0:46:27 > 0:46:31I think this was meant to be a copper, but it's not very coppery.

0:46:31 > 0:46:33It's metallic, so halfway there.

0:46:34 > 0:46:36Well, the leaves have come out beautifully.

0:46:36 > 0:46:39Everything I expected and a little bit more.

0:46:39 > 0:46:40The canopies, er...

0:46:42 > 0:46:44They're not in good shape.

0:46:44 > 0:46:46- Hi, Rich.- Hello there. Excellent. - Will they do the job?

0:46:46 > 0:46:48Well, we can but hope.

0:46:51 > 0:46:55SARA: The potters must assemble their lights, ready for judging.

0:46:55 > 0:46:58I'm doing the same knot as what you'd do for a fishing hook.

0:46:58 > 0:47:00Twist, twist, twist.

0:47:00 > 0:47:06Hives must be hung, canopies fixed and porcelain pipes suspended.

0:47:10 > 0:47:11Please, don't drop!

0:47:13 > 0:47:16RICHARD SIGHS WITH RELIEF Whoa!

0:47:21 > 0:47:22That wasn't good.

0:47:26 > 0:47:29Luckily, it didn't hit anything else.

0:47:29 > 0:47:31We'll try and glue it but...

0:47:34 > 0:47:35Let's see what we can do.

0:47:37 > 0:47:40As the potters struggle with their light features,

0:47:40 > 0:47:43their friends and family are gathering canal-side.

0:47:44 > 0:47:47- THEY CHANT:- Clover! Clover!

0:47:47 > 0:47:50And there's a few familiar faces.

0:47:50 > 0:47:53It's so lovely to be back and see everybody.

0:47:53 > 0:47:55It's really nice. And the sun's shining!

0:47:55 > 0:47:58I'm thinking about how all the contestants feel.

0:47:58 > 0:48:00They must be really stressed out right now.

0:48:00 > 0:48:03I want Richard to win. I'd like to see Richard do it.

0:48:03 > 0:48:05Clover, from the very beginning, has been saying,

0:48:05 > 0:48:06"Oh, I can't hand-build."

0:48:06 > 0:48:08And she can.

0:48:08 > 0:48:10My money's on Ryan.

0:48:11 > 0:48:14The good thing about the porcelain breaking, I think,

0:48:14 > 0:48:16is that they're all clean breaks, real crisp breaks,

0:48:16 > 0:48:19so it's actually quite easy to glue back together. Which is a bonus.

0:48:21 > 0:48:23- BLEEP- sake.

0:48:24 > 0:48:26HE SIGHS

0:48:28 > 0:48:30Gluing one together and another one's breaking.

0:48:30 > 0:48:32I'm going to put this bee here.

0:48:33 > 0:48:34We are nearly there.

0:48:34 > 0:48:39It just shows - a bit of willpower, you CAN create summat.

0:48:56 > 0:48:58Well, potters, this is it.

0:48:58 > 0:49:02This is the very last time Kate and Keith are going to judge your work,

0:49:02 > 0:49:03so best of luck.

0:49:03 > 0:49:07Clover, we're going to come to you first.

0:49:22 > 0:49:23You managed to pull it together.

0:49:23 > 0:49:26Well done, cos you had a tricky time too, didn't you?

0:49:26 > 0:49:28It is, yeah. I had to change my design halfway through

0:49:28 > 0:49:31because it just wouldn't work with the ribbon.

0:49:31 > 0:49:33I think it's a lot better than I expected it to be.

0:49:33 > 0:49:36What you always give us is a very, very strong narrative

0:49:36 > 0:49:39to your design concept, and you've pulled it off.

0:49:39 > 0:49:42- For me, there is a bit too much wire going on.- Yeah.

0:49:42 > 0:49:45But you've given us this lovely soft honey colour,

0:49:45 > 0:49:48which works really, really well with the porcelain.

0:49:48 > 0:49:50Also, there is a bit of translucency.

0:49:50 > 0:49:53It's really showing off that nice honey glow concept.

0:49:53 > 0:49:56Your texture on the surface is very lovely.

0:49:56 > 0:49:58I'm really glad you pierced them,

0:49:58 > 0:50:00- because the light is coming out. - Yes.

0:50:00 > 0:50:03And I do love the way you've glazed your bees.

0:50:03 > 0:50:04There's this dripping sense.

0:50:04 > 0:50:07It's a sense that it's shiny, it's wet with honey,

0:50:07 > 0:50:10and the whole thing's got a great movement and energy.

0:50:10 > 0:50:13You've really shown us great tenacity.

0:50:13 > 0:50:16You know, quite often you do have to think on your feet

0:50:16 > 0:50:19- and you've done that perfectly, so well done.- Thank you.

0:50:38 > 0:50:43Oh, Richard, I'm gambolling through an autumnal forest immediately here.

0:50:43 > 0:50:44Well, we got there in the end.

0:50:44 > 0:50:46We soldiered on, we battled it and, you know,

0:50:46 > 0:50:50we managed to get two lights, which, at one point,

0:50:50 > 0:50:51I didn't think we were going to do.

0:50:51 > 0:50:55- Obviously, we have to mention the cracks and everything.- Yeah.

0:50:55 > 0:50:58With porcelain, you have to wire things off straightaway

0:50:58 > 0:51:00and I think that was a major mistake, obviously,

0:51:00 > 0:51:02when you were throwing these.

0:51:02 > 0:51:06Credit to you for persevering and having them hang in front of us.

0:51:06 > 0:51:09They do downlight the leaves, the leaves are well glazed,

0:51:09 > 0:51:12you're quite well hung, Richard, with these two,

0:51:12 > 0:51:15and you've used the porcelain on the leaves very nicely.

0:51:15 > 0:51:17You know, it does play with the light.

0:51:17 > 0:51:19Your process of creating your leaves,

0:51:19 > 0:51:22using the consistency of the clay at the optimum time to get

0:51:22 > 0:51:25that definition, was really, really masterful.

0:51:25 > 0:51:27The colours are really autumnal colours.

0:51:27 > 0:51:29You've really managed to capture that.

0:51:30 > 0:51:32Throughout this whole process...

0:51:33 > 0:51:37..I have to say, you know, it's inspirational how you've...

0:51:39 > 0:51:40Don't! You'll get me going.

0:51:42 > 0:51:44How you've managed to pull it through and, you know,

0:51:44 > 0:51:47- you've got two lights hanging here. It's fantastic.- Thank you.

0:51:47 > 0:51:50- Well done.- Thanks, Richard. - Thank you, Richard.

0:52:06 > 0:52:09So, you managed not to smash ALL of your pieces, at least.

0:52:09 > 0:52:14- Yeah, just about.- We do have two identical lamps hanging here.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17I can't see the breakages that have happened along the way

0:52:17 > 0:52:21and they are effective. You know, the light is radiating from them

0:52:21 > 0:52:22in different ways.

0:52:22 > 0:52:24I'm going to have a look from below.

0:52:24 > 0:52:27The metallic glazes are really reflecting the light.

0:52:27 > 0:52:30There's a sense of the organ in the church, you know,

0:52:30 > 0:52:32talking about the tubes.

0:52:32 > 0:52:34They're simple but effective.

0:52:35 > 0:52:39Just the simple slit in there shows us the delicacy

0:52:39 > 0:52:41of these elongated tubes.

0:52:41 > 0:52:44I would probably like to have seen the metallic glazes

0:52:44 > 0:52:45working a little bit better,

0:52:45 > 0:52:49but I kind of like the difference that you've got between

0:52:49 > 0:52:52the pure white outside and how the light works with that.

0:52:53 > 0:52:57I must say, Ryan, you've come in with your tools and, you know,

0:52:57 > 0:53:01you can have a brilliant idea but it's how you carry that forward

0:53:01 > 0:53:03and you've really shown us that and I'm just really pleased.

0:53:03 > 0:53:05- Thank you.- Fantastic, Ryan.

0:53:14 > 0:53:17Kind of relieved it's over but also sad.

0:53:17 > 0:53:19I'm feeling absolutely exhausted.

0:53:19 > 0:53:22I am shattered. I think, no matter what the results are today,

0:53:22 > 0:53:24I've learned so much and met some amazing friends.

0:53:24 > 0:53:27We're all going to stay in touch and keep potting.

0:53:27 > 0:53:28I literally feel proud of myself

0:53:28 > 0:53:32but "proud" is not a word to say in Chinese culture.

0:53:32 > 0:53:34I'll say I'm very delighted!

0:53:34 > 0:53:38You get great comments from Keith and then he starts,

0:53:38 > 0:53:40and the tears start and, you know,

0:53:40 > 0:53:42cos you're so emotional, it sets you off.

0:53:42 > 0:53:45And, er, yeah, I had to walk away there,

0:53:45 > 0:53:47otherwise I'd have been joining in, I think.

0:53:47 > 0:53:51In a few minutes' time, the judges are going to announce the winner

0:53:51 > 0:53:53and that's going to be very emotional.

0:53:53 > 0:53:55I'm going to put waterproof mascara on now.

0:54:00 > 0:54:03Well, judges, I can hear a slight hullabaloo from outside.

0:54:03 > 0:54:06All the friends and family are here to cheer on the finalists

0:54:06 > 0:54:09and you've got to decide who the winner is.

0:54:09 > 0:54:11So, if there were extras points for coping

0:54:11 > 0:54:13and battling against adversity,

0:54:13 > 0:54:15then Richard would be right up there, wouldn't he?

0:54:15 > 0:54:19Absolutely. You know, he really showed great tenacity

0:54:19 > 0:54:20in just getting those up there, really.

0:54:20 > 0:54:23And really the strongest part of the whole thing

0:54:23 > 0:54:27was his leaves and the glazing. It was absolutely lovely to see that.

0:54:27 > 0:54:30Let's talk about Ryan and his light feature.

0:54:30 > 0:54:33It was a very simple design concept and I love that.

0:54:33 > 0:54:37This was a big ask - two identical lights of this scale.

0:54:37 > 0:54:39You had to have a plan, you had to have a build plan,

0:54:39 > 0:54:42and the way that he's used the porcelain,

0:54:42 > 0:54:45there are actually areas where the porcelain glows.

0:54:45 > 0:54:47It was really well done.

0:54:47 > 0:54:49Let's talk about Clover.

0:54:49 > 0:54:51Every time she's come up with a problem,

0:54:51 > 0:54:54in whatever challenge it has been, she's managed to, sort of,

0:54:54 > 0:54:57think on her feet and come up with something equally as good.

0:54:57 > 0:54:59It's brilliant to see.

0:54:59 > 0:55:02We've got these beautiful, glowing beehives.

0:55:02 > 0:55:04The bees were beautifully glazed.

0:55:04 > 0:55:07She's got it. You know, when it comes to surface, Clover's got it.

0:55:07 > 0:55:11Well, judges, it's almost time. You've got to choose a winner.

0:55:11 > 0:55:12Have you got a lot to talk about?

0:55:12 > 0:55:14Yeah, I think we've got a fair idea.

0:55:14 > 0:55:18Yeah, just a few more things to discuss, just to make sure.

0:55:21 > 0:55:23CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:55:30 > 0:55:31Ladies and gentlemen, let's give

0:55:31 > 0:55:35a huge round of applause to the three people who have worked so hard

0:55:35 > 0:55:36to get this far.

0:55:36 > 0:55:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:55:50 > 0:55:53So, then, potters, here we go.

0:55:55 > 0:55:58The winner of The Great Pottery Throw Down...

0:56:05 > 0:56:06..is...

0:56:14 > 0:56:16..Ryan. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:56:19 > 0:56:20Well done!

0:56:20 > 0:56:23MUSIC: For Your Love by The Yardbirds

0:56:29 > 0:56:32- Congratulations.- 'I'm so incredibly proud of Ryan.'

0:56:32 > 0:56:35It just shows hard work and determination

0:56:35 > 0:56:37can get you to grow and really flourish.

0:56:37 > 0:56:39Well done, Ryan.

0:56:40 > 0:56:42It's such an achievement.

0:56:42 > 0:56:45Ryan has been doing this just for a few years.

0:56:45 > 0:56:47That's why we're here -

0:56:47 > 0:56:49to see people like Ryan develop

0:56:49 > 0:56:54and learn and just watch the whole process. Gorgeous!

0:56:54 > 0:56:55It's so lovely.

0:56:55 > 0:56:58This is a magical moment for me.

0:56:58 > 0:57:01I'm ecstatic that I actually managed to win a Pottery Throw Down.

0:57:01 > 0:57:03It's going to be a memory for the rest of my life.

0:57:03 > 0:57:05- Just so happy. - HE CHUCKLES
