0:06:53 > 0:06:56- He brutally attacked her - and violated her.

0:06:56 > 0:07:01- He photographed her - in various forms...

0:07:01 > 0:07:04- ..and states of undress.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07- She suffered a horrific time...

0:07:07 > 0:07:10- ..which she tried to keep from us - when she returned.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16- He had threatened to share the - pictures of her on the Internet.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20- At the time, Nadine didn't take - her complaint any further.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24- But now, this evidence was valuable - to the detectives.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27- The marker on our records - indicated...

0:07:27 > 0:07:32- ..that he may have been someone - who was violent towards her...

0:07:32 > 0:07:36- ..and that's when it became - a murder investigation.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40- A post-mortem examination - revealed...

0:07:41 > 0:07:45- ..that there were 17 marks - and bruises on Nadine's body.

0:07:45 > 0:07:50- The evidence on her neck showed - that she had been strangled.

0:08:30 > 0:08:35- They asked him to leave Cardiff and - escorted him to the railway station.

0:09:15 > 0:09:20- We know from the CCTV footage and - from people working at the hotel...

0:09:20 > 0:09:25- ..that the couple had left - and gone to City Road for a meal.

0:09:27 > 0:09:32- They went to a restaurant - where Nadine used to work.

0:09:32 > 0:09:38- We know that they were arguing - in the restaurant on City Road.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- At eleven o'clock, - they arrived back at the hotel.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57- These are the last images - of Nadine Aburas alive.

0:10:09 > 0:10:14- Just after midnight, Almahri left - and went to the Grosvenor casino.

0:10:15 > 0:10:20- He registered at reception, before - going to the bar to drink tequila.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25- Then he returned to the hotel...

0:10:25 > 0:10:29- ..and ordered two bottles of beer - to take to his room.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37- At three in the morning, - Almahri left the hotel...

0:10:37 > 0:10:40- ..after asking for directions - to the M4.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50- He drove to Heathrow - in Nadine's car.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55- He parked the car in Terminal 5.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08- But, by the time detectives - received this evidence...

0:11:08 > 0:11:09- ..it was too late.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14- Sammy Almahri was on a plane - to Qatar.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18- To be honest, there was - something of a panic...

0:11:19 > 0:11:21- ..because we knew that - within 38 minutes...

0:11:22 > 0:11:24- ..he would be landing in Qatar.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27- You have to remember - that it was New Year's Eve...

0:11:27 > 0:11:31- ..and he was arriving - in a totally different country.

0:11:33 > 0:11:37- We needed an international arrest - warrant, we needed Interpol.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40- All things that take time - on a normal day...

0:11:40 > 0:11:44- ..but on New Year's Eve, - practically impossible.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50- He had managed to escape.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53- That's when I hit rock bottom.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57- I thought, "That's it, he's gone, - he's got away with it.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09- ..and we needed to know that this - person couldn't hurt anybody else.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14- He caught another flight - to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20- From there, there was a risk - that he could disappear altogether.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26- To know where your suspect is, - to know where they're going...

0:12:26 > 0:12:29- ..and to be able - to do nothing about it...

0:12:29 > 0:12:33- ..is probably one of the most - frustrating periods I've ever had.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39- The police now suspected - that Almahri was in Tanzania.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43- It was a race to catch him, - before he disappeared again.

0:13:09 > 0:13:14- ..the man suspected of her murder - had escaped to Africa.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18- Detectives turned to the media - and made a public appeal...

0:13:18 > 0:13:21- ..entreating him to give himself up.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23- Sammy, please...

0:13:23 > 0:13:27- ..I am asking you, - as Nadine's mother...

0:14:08 > 0:14:13- The data from the phone - and from the use of his bank card...

0:14:13 > 0:14:16- ..confirmed that he was still - in Tanzania.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20- Detective Gareth Morgan decided - to telephone him.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59- He alleged that Nadine was still - alive when he left the hotel.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06- ..to try and strangle herself - with a belt.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23- He was very erratic - in those conversations.

0:15:23 > 0:15:27- It was very difficult to understand - whether he was intoxicated.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01- On January 2, - Sammy Almahri phoned them back.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04- This time, he had company.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34- I think Sammy Almahri played a game - from the start.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36- Negotiation showed that.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38- There were times - during negotiation...

0:16:39 > 0:16:43- ..when he had other women - on the line and in the background.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30- It was so horrible. - It was a horrible experience.

0:17:30 > 0:17:35- It was as though murdering my sister - wasn't enough for him.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37- He had to torment us further.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50- Almahri had left his own phone - at Nadine's flat.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54- The detectives sent it - for forensic examination.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02- I went to meet the digital experts - at Sytech...

0:18:03 > 0:18:05- ..who were asked to work - on the case.

0:18:05 > 0:18:10- They explained to me how they - take phones apart and restore data.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15- The first thing we do is to strip it - down like this.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19- Then we take it down to the circuit - board and expose the chips.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23- We would take off this chip - and it would look like this then.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32- This little card can hold - a lot of information.

0:18:33 > 0:18:37- We can retrieve things - such as text messages, calls...

0:18:43 > 0:18:47- On Almahri's phone, there was - special software called spyware.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50- He could read - and watch everything...

0:18:51 > 0:18:53- ..on Nadine's phone from his phone.

0:18:55 > 0:18:59- You can read SMS messages, - you can look at photos, videos...

0:19:04 > 0:19:09- Also on Almahri's phone, were - threatening texts and messages.

0:19:11 > 0:19:15- We knew that Sammy Almahri - was a jealous and possessive man...

0:19:18 > 0:19:21- We obtained evidence - from his phone...

0:19:26 > 0:19:29- Those threats - were excellent evidence...

0:19:30 > 0:19:32- ..in showing the motive - for this crime.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43- South Wales detectives - travelled to Tanzania...

0:19:43 > 0:19:46- ..to help police there - search for him.

0:19:46 > 0:19:50- They followed the movements - of Nadine's phone...

0:19:50 > 0:19:52- ..around the country - trying to catch him.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56- Information from the phone - led the police to a rural area...

0:19:56 > 0:19:58- ..about ten hours - from Dar es Salaam.

0:19:59 > 0:20:05- There, on January 19, - local police found him on a farm...

0:20:05 > 0:20:07- ..near the town of Iringa.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14- He was arrested and held in custody.

0:20:15 > 0:20:20- Two months later, he was transported - from Tanzania to Wales.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25- I think it was a major coup - to capture Sammy Almahri...

0:20:25 > 0:20:28- ..as quickly as we did, - given the circumstances.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32- We brought him back. - We extradited him from Tanzania.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39- The speed and efficiency with which - that was done was remarkable.

0:20:41 > 0:20:45- We were so happy and relieved that - he didn't get to torment us anymore.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19- ..and that he'd killed her - after hearing voices in his head.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21- He said that it was - the voice of God.

0:21:21 > 0:21:26- But, unexpectedly, on the second day - of the trial, he changed his mind.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30- He pleaded guilty to murder.

0:21:33 > 0:21:38- On November 3, the judge sentenced - him to life imprisonment.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42- He will serve a minimum - of seventeen years in prison.
