0:11:38 > 0:11:43- Crime Scene Investigators gather - evidence from the crime scene.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52- When you arrive at a crime scene, - how do you prepare the area?

0:11:52 > 0:11:57- First of all we look to see where - they've established the cordons...

0:11:57 > 0:12:03- ..to make sure they're big enough to - keep people out of the crime scene.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06- Once we're happy that it's done...

0:12:06 > 0:12:09- ..we begin gathering evidence...

0:12:09 > 0:12:12- ..and in order to do that quickly...

0:12:12 > 0:12:16- ..if there's very important evidence - to be found...

0:12:16 > 0:12:18- ..we use stepping plates...

0:12:18 > 0:12:24- ..to make sure we don't damage it - by trampling on it.

0:12:37 > 0:12:42- As you can see, the CSIs have - already reached the crime scene.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- They've discovered - an object on the floor...

0:12:46 > 0:12:49- ..and placed - a scene marker alongside it...

0:12:49 > 0:12:53- ..so that when we take photographs - and video, we know exactly...

0:12:54 > 0:12:57- ..where the object was found - at the crime scene.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02- There's a mobile phone - next to marker number two.

0:13:02 > 0:13:07- Something like that's important - when we arrive at the crime scene.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10- It either belongs to the victim...

0:13:10 > 0:13:13- ..or the offender.

0:13:13 > 0:13:18- It's important to find it quickly - so it can be processed.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20- They have a special laboratory...

0:13:21 > 0:13:24- ..to examine objects - and gather DNA evidence.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26- This is our DNA laboratory.

0:13:27 > 0:13:28- Exhibits are sent here...

0:13:29 > 0:13:32- ..and a technician - swabs them for DNA.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36- The swabs are then sent away - to a laboratory...

0:13:36 > 0:13:38- ..which processes them for us.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40- ..which processes them for us.- - What about the laboratory itself?

0:13:41 > 0:13:43- The room is completely sterile.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45- Every person who enters it...

0:13:45 > 0:13:50- ..must provide an elimination - sample DNA and wear special clothes.

0:13:52 > 0:13:57- We're able to swab exhibits - at the crime scene itself...

0:13:57 > 0:14:01- ..but with more serious cases, - we tend to send everything here...

0:14:02 > 0:14:05- ..because - it's a sterile environment.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- In Ffion Wyn Roberts' case, the team - found important forensic results...

0:14:14 > 0:14:16- ..including - the DNA profile of a man...

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- ..from the scarf - used to strangle her.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24- The main area - that they concentrated on...

0:14:24 > 0:14:27- ..was the folds - within the knot itself.

0:14:27 > 0:14:32- So, in between those areas where - most force would've been applied.

0:14:32 > 0:14:37- It wasn't a full profile, - it was a partial profile.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40- But the scientists - found a full DNA profile...

0:14:40 > 0:14:43- ..on the trousers - found at the floodgates.

0:14:47 > 0:14:52- That profile matched the partial - profile from Ffion's scarf.

0:14:52 > 0:14:57- There were also clear results - from Ffion's handbag.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01- Initially, - we had swabbed the zip...

0:15:01 > 0:15:04- ..but we didn't get - fantastic results.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07- It only came back as Ffion's DNA.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11- But then we thought if someone - was going to empty that bag...

0:15:12 > 0:15:15- ..particularly a man, - how would they go about it?

0:15:16 > 0:15:19- We targeted - the underside of the bag...

0:15:19 > 0:15:22- ..as if it was - being held upside down...

0:15:22 > 0:15:25- ..while the contents - were being emptied.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29- We ended up with a full DNA profile - from our offender...

0:15:29 > 0:15:31- ..that matched all the other DNA.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39- But the DNA profile - wasn't on the National Database.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42- The killer's identity - remained a mystery.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46- As police carried out - door-to-door enquiries...

0:15:46 > 0:15:49- ..one local man's name - was mentioned.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51- Iestyn Davies.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54- What's that? A snooker cue?

0:15:56 > 0:15:59- Iestyn Davies was 53 years old.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01- He worked - at a wool factory in the town.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04- He rented a flat - in Porthmadog harbour.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09- The police interviewed him - and collected a DNA sample.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12- He'd also been caught - on CCTV footage...

0:16:12 > 0:16:15- ..the night Ffion disappeared.

0:16:15 > 0:16:20- The police started to study - the footage more closely.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26- We have a sighting at 4.15am - of Iestyn Davies...

0:16:26 > 0:16:30- ..walking down the high street - in the early hours...

0:16:30 > 0:16:33- ..towards - where Ffion was walking home.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38- These images show that Iestyn Davies - was walking towards the Cob...

0:16:38 > 0:16:43- ..wearing dark trousers - and black trainers at 5.09am.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47- Later, in the harbour, - footage from another CCTV camera...

0:16:48 > 0:16:51- ..captures light and movement - in his flat.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53- Later, at 6.11am...

0:16:53 > 0:16:57- ..this clip shows - that he's changed his clothes...

0:16:57 > 0:17:01- ..and is now wearing - different trousers and light shoes.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07- It was significant in this case.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10- We could trace his whereabouts...

0:17:10 > 0:17:12- ..and what he was wearing.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16- We know where he was walking - in the early hours.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25- In September, Davies was taken - into custody for questioning...

0:18:02 > 0:18:04- ..he was charged with her murder.

0:18:08 > 0:18:13- We could prove 100% that - the trousers belonged to Davies...

0:18:13 > 0:18:16- ..and the handbag - belonged to Ffion.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21- It was here that Iestyn Davies - made his biggest mistake.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25- Instead of throwing them - into the water...

0:18:25 > 0:18:29- ..he decided to throw them over the - gate to get rid of the evidence...

0:18:30 > 0:18:33- ..and unfortunately for him, - but fortunately for us...
