0:07:43 > 0:07:45- These days, the victim's hair...

0:07:50 > 0:07:52- But even in the 1960s...

0:07:53 > 0:07:57- ..police used the skull - to determine the shape of her face.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59- At the time, in 1961...

0:08:00 > 0:08:02- ..this is the technology they used.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- By comparing the skull - that was discovered...

0:08:06 > 0:08:09- ..with a photograph - of Mamie Stuart...

0:08:09 > 0:08:13- ..they used an overlay, - and by doing that...

0:08:17 > 0:08:19- We know it was Mamie Stuart.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28- This is the Face Lab in Liverpool - which helps police forces...

0:08:28 > 0:08:32- ..to identify human remains - by concentrating on the face.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37- The techniques are very different - from those of the 1960s.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46- The first thing we do...

0:08:46 > 0:08:50- ..is establish the biological - profile of the remains.

0:08:50 > 0:08:55- The age, the sex of the individual, - the ethnic group, the ancestry.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57- We look at signs - of trauma or disease...

0:08:58 > 0:09:02- ..and we focus specifically - on prediction of facial features...

0:09:02 > 0:09:06- ..from analysis of the bones - of the face.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12- We've built up a process and - a database of scanned features...

0:09:12 > 0:09:15- ..and modelled muscles - that we can import...

0:09:15 > 0:09:20- ..and build the face, muscle - by muscle, feature by feature...

0:09:20 > 0:09:22- ..on to the 3D model from the scan.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30- Despite the advances, some aspects - are still difficult to determine.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37- Skin colour, eye colour, - hairstyle...

0:09:37 > 0:09:41- ..the number of wrinkles - texture - information is difficult to know.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45- We have to be careful when we - present this face to the public...

0:09:45 > 0:09:48- ..because we want it - to be recognized.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51- We produce an image - in black and white...

0:09:51 > 0:09:56- ..that the police can put out - to the public in a frontal view.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00- We focus on the centre of the face - and blur anything like hairstyle...

0:10:00 > 0:10:03- ..that we may not - feel confident about.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- In the 1960s, - detectives were sure...

0:10:09 > 0:10:13- ..that the body at Brandy Cove - was that of Mamie Stuart.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17- But it was hard to prove - whether or not she was murdered.

0:10:17 > 0:10:22- The evidence of a local witness - proved vital to the inquest.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27- During the inquest - in December 1961...

0:10:27 > 0:10:31- ..a postman said he remembered - seeing George Shotton...

0:10:31 > 0:10:35- ..carrying a heavy sack - from his house to his car...

0:10:35 > 0:10:37- ..and driving towards Brandy Cove.

0:10:38 > 0:10:42- The jury decided that it was - Mamie's body inside the sack.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50- Pieces of sackcloth...

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- ..found near the bones - confirmed suspicions...

0:10:54 > 0:10:57- ..that George Shotton - had murdered her.

0:11:00 > 0:11:05- But when detectives went to - search for him, they were too late.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08- He'd died three years earlier...

0:11:08 > 0:11:10- ..aged 78.

0:11:12 > 0:11:16- On his release from jail, - George Shotton moved to England...

0:11:17 > 0:11:19- ..and lived a quiet life.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23- He died in April 1958 - at Southmead Hospital, Bristol.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25- A mere three years - after his death...

0:11:25 > 0:11:28- ..the truth about his secret - came to light...

0:11:28 > 0:11:32- ..and was widely reported - in the British press.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51- He never thought - Mamie Stuart would be found...

0:11:51 > 0:11:56- ..because the body was kept - in a chamber inside the cave.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01- It was purely down to luck...

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- ..that the men decided - to take that route into the cave.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12- Though it took 40 years - to find Mamie Stuart...

0:12:13 > 0:12:18- ..the mystery surrounding - her disappearance had been solved.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25- But for detectives in North Wales...

0:15:19 > 0:15:23- One part of the skull...

0:15:52 > 0:15:54- We don't think it was buried here...

0:15:55 > 0:15:58- ..but we believe that plants, - leaves and branches...

0:17:25 > 0:17:26- Alright, boss?

0:17:26 > 0:17:30- I've got some photos - of the forest we've recently had....

0:17:50 > 0:17:53- ..at the end of the 1980s.

0:17:54 > 0:17:59- It's likely that he wasn't deposited - there at that time...

0:17:59 > 0:18:03- ..because there was no forest - to conceal him.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15- The skeleton was discovered - near the village of Pentrellyncymer.

0:18:18 > 0:18:19- A remote location...

0:18:29 > 0:18:31- This area is very remote.

0:18:31 > 0:18:36- It makes you think that it's someone - with some connection to this place.

0:18:36 > 0:18:42- It might be a local or someone - who knows about this place.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48- It's very rare that someone - leaves a body somewhere...

0:18:48 > 0:18:51- ..with no knowledge - of the area itself.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00- But when the news broke, - no-one came forward with a name.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05- The detectives were still in the - dark, unable to identify the body.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14- As detectives, - we have to find out who he was...

0:19:14 > 0:19:17- ..in order to focus - on the victimology...

0:19:17 > 0:19:21- ..and work out - what happened to him and why.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23- Until we know who he was...

0:19:33 > 0:19:36- Tests carried out on the fibres - were very revealing.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44- By examining the material...

0:19:44 > 0:19:48- ..they've discovered - it was dark green in colour...

0:19:49 > 0:19:52- ..and that it was a Pringle jumper.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59- ..we've recently ascertained...

0:20:00 > 0:20:05- ..that the jumper itself - was produced between 2000 and 2004.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08- That's very good news for us...

0:20:08 > 0:20:11- ..because we now know - that the body had been there...

0:20:12 > 0:20:14- ..after the year 2000.

0:20:14 > 0:20:18- Detectives hope someone - will recognize the jumper.
