0:00:02 > 0:00:05Starting a new life in a country you've never been to
0:00:05 > 0:00:07requires a massive leap of faith,
0:00:07 > 0:00:10especially if you've also to convince your partner
0:00:10 > 0:00:12it's the right move.
0:00:12 > 0:00:14Hoping to do just that,
0:00:14 > 0:00:19in 2012, Billy Fitzpatrick spent a trial week in New Zealand
0:00:19 > 0:00:21with his family. Four years on,
0:00:21 > 0:00:25we're going back to see what happened next.
0:00:25 > 0:00:27On their original week down under
0:00:27 > 0:00:30Billy's wife, Beth, just couldn't see the appeal.
0:00:30 > 0:00:31It's a no.
0:00:31 > 0:00:32It's not an option for me.
0:00:32 > 0:00:33It doesn't make it feasible.
0:00:33 > 0:00:34Complete no.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36And it looked like moving would cause heartache
0:00:36 > 0:00:38for the couple's children.
0:00:38 > 0:00:39I'd love to make new friends here
0:00:39 > 0:00:41but I'd really miss my friends and family back home.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43So, four years on,
0:00:43 > 0:00:45have the Fitzpatricks made themselves at home in Scotland
0:00:45 > 0:00:47or New Zealand?
0:00:47 > 0:00:51I was torn apart because my heart was somewhere else.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15Known for its relaxed lifestyle,
0:01:15 > 0:01:19New Zealand has long been a draw for Brits seeking a new life.
0:01:19 > 0:01:20Being the same size as the UK
0:01:20 > 0:01:23but with a fraction of the population
0:01:23 > 0:01:25only adds to the country's appeal.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28But reality doesn't always meet expectations.
0:01:28 > 0:01:32Many expats return home, giving up on their dream.
0:01:32 > 0:01:38In 2012 the Fitzpatrick family faced a major dilemma.
0:01:38 > 0:01:42After spending a week experiencing the reality of life in New Zealand,
0:01:42 > 0:01:45they had to decide whether they would stay in the UK
0:01:45 > 0:01:48or make the move down under for good.
0:01:48 > 0:01:52Today, we'll find out where the Fitzpatricks now call home.
0:01:55 > 0:01:57Four years ago,
0:01:57 > 0:02:00the family travelled over 12,000 miles for their trial week.
0:02:00 > 0:02:04After 23 hours in the air, they finally reached Auckland.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10And it seemed they'd taken the travelling in their stride.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14The journey wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16Yeah, the flight here was fantastic,
0:02:16 > 0:02:18don't know what all the fuss was about.
0:02:18 > 0:02:19I could do that again tomorrow.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22One member of the family begged to differ.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25Really, really long and really, really boring.
0:02:25 > 0:02:27HE LAUGHS
0:02:34 > 0:02:38Home for the Fitzpatricks was the village of Twechar near Glasgow.
0:02:40 > 0:02:45Beth, a florist, and Billy, a prison officer, lived with their two boys,
0:02:45 > 0:02:48Paul, then aged nine, and Lucas, who was two.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51The village had been Beth's home for most of her life,
0:02:51 > 0:02:54but Billy had an itch that just wouldn't go away.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56Over the years Beth and I have been together,
0:02:56 > 0:02:59it's always been at the back of my mind, and I've bugged her.
0:02:59 > 0:03:01Every now and again, I'll mention it, and she'll say,
0:03:01 > 0:03:03"No, it's not happening."
0:03:03 > 0:03:07Beth had never been taken by the idea of emigrating
0:03:07 > 0:03:10and leaving her family behind.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12Billy's been looking to emigrate now
0:03:12 > 0:03:16for probably about... I would say about 12 years.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19And I was always of a mind that it wasn't for me.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23And I used to say, not while my gran's here,
0:03:23 > 0:03:26and, unfortunately, she passed away ten years ago.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28And then he's still gone on and I said,
0:03:28 > 0:03:30"No, not while my mum and dad's here."
0:03:30 > 0:03:32But since we've lost my dad,
0:03:32 > 0:03:34it's put a lot of things into perspective,
0:03:34 > 0:03:38so I think now...maybe it's time to follow his dream now.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43Billy was hoping the country could offer their children
0:03:43 > 0:03:45a better future.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47We can pretty much settle anywhere.
0:03:47 > 0:03:50I could live in a cardboard box on the hard shoulder of the M8
0:03:50 > 0:03:51if I had to.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54But as long as my boys are safe and well,
0:03:54 > 0:03:56and they get all the opportunities that I want them to have
0:03:56 > 0:04:00that I never had, then that's important to me.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03And the couple both believed the wildlife and lifestyle
0:04:03 > 0:04:05in New Zealand would particularly benefit Paul.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08He's been dubbed Nature Boy since he could walk.
0:04:08 > 0:04:12The prospects of Paul having a more outdoor lifestyle over there
0:04:12 > 0:04:14appeal to me greatly.
0:04:14 > 0:04:19But any future in New Zealand would come at a very high price.
0:04:19 > 0:04:22The hardest part would be leaving Beth's mum.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25She is a massive part of our lives, you know,
0:04:25 > 0:04:27a massive part of the kids' lives.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30And I think that's going to be really, really tough.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33I'm a wee bit nervous about moving to New Zealand.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37Because I won't be able to, like,
0:04:37 > 0:04:40every Friday, stop for a break and go to my granny's.
0:04:41 > 0:04:43That's the biggest part of my life,
0:04:43 > 0:04:46is my grandkids.
0:04:47 > 0:04:52Leaving my mum is going to be the hardest part of the move for us.
0:04:52 > 0:04:55I don't think she realises just how hard it's going to be,
0:04:55 > 0:04:57going away and leaving the boys.
0:04:57 > 0:04:58Not having the boys.
0:05:00 > 0:05:02And I think she'll really struggle with that.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09The Fitzpatricks faced a painful dilemma.
0:05:09 > 0:05:10While Billy believed New Zealand
0:05:10 > 0:05:12would offer his family a better life,
0:05:12 > 0:05:16moving would see Beth separated from the mum she loved.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19The family chose to visit Auckland for their trial week.
0:05:19 > 0:05:23The city offers plenty of work and lifestyle opportunities,
0:05:23 > 0:05:26but property prices can be high.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29Home for the family's week was the Saint Heliers Bay area.
0:05:29 > 0:05:33And this two-bedroom house offered a good base for exploring Auckland.
0:05:33 > 0:05:35Wow.
0:05:35 > 0:05:36What does that say?
0:05:36 > 0:05:39"Welcome to New Zealand Fitzpatrick family."
0:05:39 > 0:05:41- That's nice, isn't it?- You think they knew we were coming here?
0:05:43 > 0:05:46The spot was a perfect start for Billy,
0:05:46 > 0:05:48and he was quick to point out why.
0:05:48 > 0:05:52I mean, if we were sat out in our back garden just now,
0:05:52 > 0:05:55on a bench similar to this, which we've got,
0:05:55 > 0:05:59would it be like this? Would it be as quiet as this?
0:05:59 > 0:06:00Would you smell the sea air?
0:06:02 > 0:06:04Would you have sunshine like this?
0:06:04 > 0:06:06Billy seemed to have entranced Beth,
0:06:06 > 0:06:11but she was busy thinking about the distance from her mum.
0:06:11 > 0:06:13If my mum turned round to us and said,
0:06:13 > 0:06:16"I really don't want you to go,"
0:06:16 > 0:06:18then I think it would make
0:06:18 > 0:06:20the decision very, very difficult for us.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25And I would be left in a quandary, I would be really stuck,
0:06:25 > 0:06:27I wouldn't know what to do.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34Back in the UK, Beth and Billy owned a four-bedroom house in Twechar,
0:06:34 > 0:06:36a village near Glasgow.
0:06:36 > 0:06:39And it was a house they'd completely transformed.
0:06:40 > 0:06:43This house has been a labour of love.
0:06:43 > 0:06:45It's been... It's been an adventure.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48Having been bitten by the DIY bug,
0:06:48 > 0:06:50the couple were looking to do the same in New Zealand.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54Similar to what we've got, in its own plot, three, four bedrooms,
0:06:54 > 0:06:55needing quite a bit of work.
0:06:55 > 0:06:57Because I quite enjoy getting my hands dirty.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01The family's property budget was £200,000.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04To give them an idea of the cost of homes down under
0:07:04 > 0:07:07we'd lined up three properties for them to view
0:07:07 > 0:07:08based on their ideal home
0:07:08 > 0:07:11and what they could afford.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13The family's first stop was in Avondale.
0:07:13 > 0:07:15Close to the city centre,
0:07:15 > 0:07:18the area has countryside and national parks nearby,
0:07:18 > 0:07:21which should have suited everyone.
0:07:21 > 0:07:23The three-bedroom house was on a good-sized plot
0:07:23 > 0:07:25and needed some renovation,
0:07:25 > 0:07:28which could have made it ideal for Beth and Billy.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32This is more like a project, isn't it?
0:07:32 > 0:07:34Something we could get our teeth into.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36Imagine the size of this room, though, if you could...
0:07:36 > 0:07:39- Just empty it.- Leave...what? Nothing?
0:07:39 > 0:07:41Nothing. No, nothing.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43Beth and Billy took the house in their stride,
0:07:43 > 0:07:45and by the time they got outside
0:07:45 > 0:07:47Billy was totally in his element.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49Look at the size of this place, Beth.
0:07:49 > 0:07:51So that could be, like, a private entrance for your mum.
0:07:51 > 0:07:53Fenced at that side.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55She'd still have her own separate kitchen.
0:07:55 > 0:07:57That wouldn't be that expensive, babe.
0:07:57 > 0:07:59But Beth wasn't impressed by the views.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03And just to make matters worse...
0:08:03 > 0:08:05TRAIN RUMBLES
0:08:08 > 0:08:10..a train at the bottom of the garden
0:08:10 > 0:08:12maybe wasn't a winning feature.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15But would the price make the property more appealing?
0:08:15 > 0:08:18The couple's budget was £200,000,
0:08:18 > 0:08:20and they had both seen SOME potential at first.
0:08:24 > 0:08:28£207,000, or 420,000.
0:08:28 > 0:08:31It was slightly over budget.
0:08:31 > 0:08:33If that was negotiable,
0:08:33 > 0:08:36then I would certainly be interested in speaking to them.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40No, the work doesn't faze me.
0:08:41 > 0:08:43But could you honestly live with the noise
0:08:43 > 0:08:45that that train made on the way past?
0:08:45 > 0:08:47- On a daily basis?- Yeah, I could.
0:08:47 > 0:08:49Mmm.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52I couldn't live with a pylon out my living-room window,
0:08:52 > 0:08:54and a train line in the back garden.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59The next house the family viewed was set in Papatoetoe,
0:08:59 > 0:09:0112 miles from the city centre.
0:09:01 > 0:09:05But would it provide the peace and quiet Beth craved?
0:09:05 > 0:09:07The three-bedroom house needed some work,
0:09:07 > 0:09:09but that shouldn't have been anything
0:09:09 > 0:09:11the Fitzpatricks couldn't handle.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15The boys were happy to leave viewing to Mum and Dad.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19It's quite a nice outside space.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21Nice and protected and covered.
0:09:21 > 0:09:23Is that French doors as well?
0:09:23 > 0:09:25- I'm assuming that would open clean up.- Open out.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28Billy was doing a good job selling this house,
0:09:28 > 0:09:30but would the inside appeal to Beth?
0:09:31 > 0:09:33- Nice cornice.- Yeah.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36The only thing missing's a ceiling rose, babe.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39- We could fix that.- You would open that up,
0:09:39 > 0:09:41so that you'd have all the natural daylight.
0:09:41 > 0:09:44Think of the light they're losing by having that closed.
0:09:44 > 0:09:46I would want that opened up.
0:09:46 > 0:09:49AEROPLANE ENGINE ROARS
0:09:49 > 0:09:51Aeroplane.
0:09:51 > 0:09:52How close to the airport are we?
0:09:53 > 0:09:56We're going from bad to worse here, aren't we?
0:09:58 > 0:10:00Planes, trains and pylons.
0:10:00 > 0:10:02It wasn't going well for Beth,
0:10:02 > 0:10:05but maybe finding the quiet countryside she wanted
0:10:05 > 0:10:08wasn't possible in a big city.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10Billy wasn't beaten easily, though,
0:10:10 > 0:10:13and hoped space for Beth's mum would help change her mind.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16Could this be the granny annexe?
0:10:16 > 0:10:18I just don't think the house fits.
0:10:18 > 0:10:21- The rooms don't fit.- Mm-hm.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23- Not for what we need it for.- Yeah.
0:10:23 > 0:10:25Nice try, Billy.
0:10:25 > 0:10:29Was there any chance the price would help sell this house to Beth?
0:10:36 > 0:10:38£197,000.
0:10:38 > 0:10:41399,000.
0:10:41 > 0:10:45I think, at that price, it's a decent house for someone.
0:10:45 > 0:10:47But it would be just not for us.
0:10:47 > 0:10:49- No, I would agree with that.- OK.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52House-hunting wasn't going well.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55However, there was one way of getting the perfect place
0:10:55 > 0:10:58for DIY-ers like Beth and Billy -
0:10:58 > 0:11:00having a house built from scratch.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02This four-bedroom property
0:11:02 > 0:11:05was the show home for a design the couple could have put
0:11:05 > 0:11:08in any location that suited their tastes.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10Wow, this is nice, isn't it?
0:11:10 > 0:11:12Really nice.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15It's nice and bright.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17I like the windows.
0:11:17 > 0:11:19Upstairs also made a good impression.
0:11:19 > 0:11:22Wow, this is gorgeous.
0:11:22 > 0:11:23Look.
0:11:23 > 0:11:24Look at the window.
0:11:24 > 0:11:25That glass...
0:11:25 > 0:11:27Beautiful, isn't it?
0:11:27 > 0:11:28You can see into the sky.
0:11:29 > 0:11:33The Fitzpatricks had taken to the style of this house.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37Now they needed to find a plot of land where they could build it.
0:11:37 > 0:11:39One option was Massey.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41On the northern outskirts of Auckland,
0:11:41 > 0:11:43it was close enough to the motorway
0:11:43 > 0:11:46to make it an easy drive to the city.
0:11:46 > 0:11:49The family were met by estate agent Janet Jones,
0:11:49 > 0:11:51who had several plots of land in the area.
0:11:51 > 0:11:53Now, this is it.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55This lovely fresh grass.
0:11:55 > 0:12:00And we've got the big motorway extended to Albany.
0:12:00 > 0:12:04It's one of the fastest-growing areas in Auckland.
0:12:04 > 0:12:05It's a good location.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09Had the Fitzpatricks found the ideal package?
0:12:09 > 0:12:11Absolutely no way.
0:12:11 > 0:12:12- No.- Not for you?
0:12:12 > 0:12:15No. I couldn't live that close to pylons
0:12:15 > 0:12:18and that close to a main motorway.
0:12:18 > 0:12:19No way.
0:12:19 > 0:12:21The location seemed to have put Beth off
0:12:21 > 0:12:23building a new house altogether.
0:12:23 > 0:12:26But would the price bring her back round?
0:12:27 > 0:12:29Well, moment of truth.
0:12:29 > 0:12:31- You ready for this?- Go for it.
0:12:36 > 0:12:38OK.
0:12:38 > 0:12:41At around £300,000 for the land and house,
0:12:41 > 0:12:44it looked like the option was blown out of the water.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46For £300,000 I would not be buying a house
0:12:46 > 0:12:49that had motorway noise and pylons behind it, so...
0:12:49 > 0:12:51So it's a definite no now?
0:12:51 > 0:12:53It's not even a consideration.
0:12:53 > 0:12:54OK.
0:12:54 > 0:12:57It hadn't been a great end to the day, but overall,
0:12:57 > 0:13:01had the Fitzpatricks been swayed by Auckland properties?
0:13:01 > 0:13:04The first house was exactly the kind of property they'd want to take on,
0:13:04 > 0:13:08until Beth heard a train and spotted a pylon.
0:13:08 > 0:13:11The couple both saw the potential in the second house,
0:13:11 > 0:13:15but being on a flight path was far from ideal.
0:13:15 > 0:13:17And although everyone fell for the last house,
0:13:17 > 0:13:20the location was a letdown for Beth.
0:13:20 > 0:13:24So when it came to properties, which way did the Fitzpatricks vote?
0:13:28 > 0:13:31- UK.- Undecided.- New Zealand.
0:13:31 > 0:13:33I'm afraid to say, for what we've seen today,
0:13:33 > 0:13:36I'm not prepared to give up my house,
0:13:36 > 0:13:39to move to the houses here for the money that they want.
0:13:45 > 0:13:49Back in the UK, Billy had worked as a prison officer for 16 years...
0:13:51 > 0:13:54..and Beth as a florist for 17 years.
0:13:57 > 0:13:59The family's aim was for Billy to work in New Zealand
0:13:59 > 0:14:02while Beth stayed at home with the children
0:14:02 > 0:14:04until they were settled.
0:14:04 > 0:14:06We'd arranged for Billy to visit Auckland Prison
0:14:06 > 0:14:09to find out what his future could hold.
0:14:09 > 0:14:12His day got under way with a tour of the facilities
0:14:12 > 0:14:14with prison manager Neil Beales.
0:14:14 > 0:14:17These guard towers are no longer manned...
0:14:17 > 0:14:18- They're not used any more?- CCTV.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21If Billy was to make his dream move a reality,
0:14:21 > 0:14:25getting the right role and salary would be crucial.
0:14:25 > 0:14:28After his tour, he sat down to talk shop with Neil.
0:14:28 > 0:14:30What comparison would I have, salary-wise,
0:14:30 > 0:14:32to what I get in the UK?
0:14:32 > 0:14:34The starting salary of a prison officer here
0:14:34 > 0:14:36is round about the 50...
0:14:36 > 0:14:38about the 50K mark.
0:14:38 > 0:14:40You'd start on the starting salary for a corrections officer,
0:14:40 > 0:14:42should that be the avenue that you go through.
0:14:42 > 0:14:46It's a bit less than I earn at the moment,
0:14:46 > 0:14:49but then I'm 17 years down the line.
0:14:49 > 0:14:52It's considerably more than the officers
0:14:52 > 0:14:55back in Scotland start on.
0:14:55 > 0:14:57It's a good few thousand pounds more.
0:14:57 > 0:15:01£25,000 would mean a £3,000 dip,
0:15:01 > 0:15:04but with his experience, Billy could progress quickly,
0:15:04 > 0:15:07which left just one more question.
0:15:07 > 0:15:09So, Neil, what are the job opportunities
0:15:09 > 0:15:11for someone like me in Auckland?
0:15:11 > 0:15:14In our region alone, we're looking at 100 vacancies at the moment,
0:15:14 > 0:15:15as we sit here today.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17Everything you've told me today
0:15:17 > 0:15:20indicates to me that you're the kind of person
0:15:20 > 0:15:21that we would like to talk to.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23That was great news.
0:15:23 > 0:15:28Billy would be in demand, even if it meant having to take a pay cut.
0:15:28 > 0:15:29But had he seen enough
0:15:29 > 0:15:32to consider restarting his career in New Zealand?
0:15:36 > 0:15:37New Zealand.
0:15:37 > 0:15:40The opportunities that I would have for progression,
0:15:40 > 0:15:43and the things that I do that they seem interested in,
0:15:43 > 0:15:45it's an absolute no-brainer for me.
0:15:45 > 0:15:47Billy had been taken by what he'd heard,
0:15:47 > 0:15:50and was keen to share the news with Beth.
0:15:50 > 0:15:51Hello.
0:15:51 > 0:15:55Hi. Was it what you expected?
0:15:55 > 0:15:57It was more than I expected.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00Would we be able to survive on your salary alone,
0:16:00 > 0:16:01if we had to come here?
0:16:01 > 0:16:04There wouldn't be really that much of a change
0:16:04 > 0:16:08between the UK and New Zealand, so, yeah, it would be good.
0:16:08 > 0:16:09It would be good.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16Billy's job prospects had excited him,
0:16:16 > 0:16:18but could the couple afford to move?
0:16:18 > 0:16:23They'd bought their home in the UK as a project for £140,000
0:16:23 > 0:16:25and spent years renovating it.
0:16:25 > 0:16:27Three years previously,
0:16:27 > 0:16:30it had been valued at £270,000,
0:16:30 > 0:16:33but the property market had changed dramatically since.
0:16:33 > 0:16:37We sent round two estate agents to give us their valuations.
0:16:38 > 0:16:40It's lovely.
0:16:40 > 0:16:42Really nice outlook from this room actually.
0:16:45 > 0:16:47It's quite dark.
0:16:47 > 0:16:49It's very different.
0:16:49 > 0:16:51It's obviously a modern kitchen.
0:16:52 > 0:16:54A good-sized master bedroom.
0:16:54 > 0:16:56Quite generous proportions.
0:16:56 > 0:16:57Lovely big window, as well.
0:16:59 > 0:17:01OK, this is a great big room.
0:17:01 > 0:17:04This is exactly what you'd like to see in, I think, any family home.
0:17:04 > 0:17:06In terms of the present value,
0:17:06 > 0:17:11I would value the property in the range of 220,000 to 230,000.
0:17:11 > 0:17:13I would recommend putting it on the market
0:17:13 > 0:17:16at offers in the region of 229.
0:17:16 > 0:17:18So, my expectation on market value,
0:17:18 > 0:17:20I'd expect the surveyor to
0:17:20 > 0:17:23value the property around the £250,000 mark.
0:17:23 > 0:17:24That being the case,
0:17:24 > 0:17:26with a supporting Home Report valuation,
0:17:26 > 0:17:31we would recommend an asking price of offers in excess of £235,000.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34It was quite a drop from the previous valuation.
0:17:36 > 0:17:40I think it's what we expected, but not what we wanted to hear.
0:17:40 > 0:17:44The lower valuation meant a possible hole in the couple's finances.
0:17:44 > 0:17:47Billy's only hope was there would be a positive outcome
0:17:47 > 0:17:50when calculating the family's living costs down under.
0:17:50 > 0:17:53One woman's haircut, one man's haircut...
0:17:53 > 0:17:55THEY LAUGH
0:17:55 > 0:17:58- Do you think we could make a saving there?- So it's the same.
0:17:58 > 0:18:01132, so, £59, it's the same.
0:18:01 > 0:18:04If you added those three, it would probably come out roughly the same.
0:18:04 > 0:18:06I don't think there's a massive...
0:18:07 > 0:18:09..difference between the two.
0:18:09 > 0:18:11The couple wouldn't be much worse off,
0:18:11 > 0:18:14but there was one big gap in their finances
0:18:14 > 0:18:16yet to be considered.
0:18:16 > 0:18:17Initially, Beth wouldn't be working.
0:18:17 > 0:18:21But when we think that we're coming over here with just me working,
0:18:21 > 0:18:24earning £1,530...
0:18:25 > 0:18:29..our current outgoings would be £2,426, which is...
0:18:31 > 0:18:33..£900...
0:18:33 > 0:18:36- Short.- ..short every month.
0:18:36 > 0:18:38It doesn't make it feasible.
0:18:38 > 0:18:39Really.
0:18:41 > 0:18:44£900 a month was a massive shortfall.
0:18:44 > 0:18:48In one stroke, it looked like Billy's dream was over.
0:18:49 > 0:18:50Or was it?
0:18:52 > 0:18:55I suppose the thing that's jumping in now for me
0:18:55 > 0:18:57is to try and convince your mum to come with us.
0:18:59 > 0:19:00If my mum would come with us then...
0:19:02 > 0:19:04..you know, we'd be fine from day one,
0:19:04 > 0:19:07because I know she'd be there to help look after the kids
0:19:07 > 0:19:09round your shifts.
0:19:09 > 0:19:12Which means it wouldn't be such an issue you going out to work.
0:19:13 > 0:19:17It was a good idea, but before trying to persuade Beth's mum,
0:19:17 > 0:19:20the couple had to be sure themselves.
0:19:20 > 0:19:21So, how did they vote?
0:19:22 > 0:19:25- Undecided.- UK.
0:19:25 > 0:19:29I want to vote New Zealand, but it's just not doable just now.
0:19:33 > 0:19:36Finances were a big step backwards for Billy.
0:19:36 > 0:19:38With so much at stake,
0:19:38 > 0:19:39the family needed to find out
0:19:39 > 0:19:43if New Zealand could offer the lifestyle they hoped for.
0:19:43 > 0:19:45With Paul passionate about nature,
0:19:45 > 0:19:49Beth, Billy and the boys wanted to get close up with wildlife.
0:19:49 > 0:19:52Oh, what are we going to see? There's the butterflies.
0:19:54 > 0:19:56I think the kids are having a fabulous time today.
0:19:56 > 0:20:00The reality is beginning to set in of what life could be like.
0:20:02 > 0:20:04The day had picked up everyone's spirits,
0:20:04 > 0:20:07but it wasn't all gentle fun.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10Luckily, nature-loving Paul didn't scare easily.
0:20:10 > 0:20:12How cool was that, dude?
0:20:12 > 0:20:13Super cool.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15Super cool.
0:20:15 > 0:20:17After a day getting to grips with the wildlife,
0:20:17 > 0:20:19it was time to vote.
0:20:20 > 0:20:23- ALL:- New Zealand.
0:20:23 > 0:20:25It was the first unanimous vote.
0:20:25 > 0:20:29The Fitzpatricks had really taken to Auckland's lifestyles.
0:20:29 > 0:20:32I liked getting to touch baby crocodiles
0:20:32 > 0:20:34and seeing the giant ones.
0:20:34 > 0:20:36But emotions were mixed.
0:20:36 > 0:20:41Really sad cos I'd love to make new friends here,
0:20:41 > 0:20:43but I'd really miss my friends and family back home.
0:20:49 > 0:20:52Their day out had shown the Fitzpatricks
0:20:52 > 0:20:54everything they could gain from a move down under,
0:20:54 > 0:20:58but they also had to consider what they had to lose at home.
0:20:58 > 0:21:00Beth and Billy decided to watch messages from home
0:21:00 > 0:21:02together with the boys.
0:21:02 > 0:21:03Hi, guys.
0:21:03 > 0:21:05How's things out in New Zealand?
0:21:05 > 0:21:06Hi, Billy, Beth, kids.
0:21:06 > 0:21:08I hope you're having fun.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10Beth has a really lovely personality,
0:21:10 > 0:21:12she is very easy-going.
0:21:12 > 0:21:14Absolutely fantastic with her two kids.
0:21:14 > 0:21:15The two kids are her life.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17Well, what I'd say about Billy is,
0:21:17 > 0:21:20why say it in two words when 500 would do?
0:21:22 > 0:21:25Billy and Elizabeth Ann are a good family,
0:21:25 > 0:21:28their love for each other, they've got the two boys.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31of which the two of them I actually adore.
0:21:31 > 0:21:33They'll do anything for their kids.
0:21:33 > 0:21:35Plus any of the family.
0:21:35 > 0:21:37We can always imagine Paul when he's older
0:21:37 > 0:21:40and it's with the wee girl and the wee cardigan
0:21:40 > 0:21:42and the wee half-moon glasses,
0:21:42 > 0:21:44whereas Lucas will be coming home with the tattoos
0:21:44 > 0:21:46and the leather jacket.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48Beth is one of my closest friends, anyway.
0:21:49 > 0:21:53And you don't get many very close friends that you can, you know...
0:21:53 > 0:21:55- Rely on.- ..rely on.
0:21:55 > 0:21:56The house is going to be funny
0:21:56 > 0:21:59because I'm not going to have the kids coming in every day.
0:21:59 > 0:22:02It's their wee cheery faces that comes round the door
0:22:02 > 0:22:04that you're going to miss.
0:22:04 > 0:22:07I only hope that it works out for them.
0:22:07 > 0:22:09He's always been there for me and...
0:22:11 > 0:22:14..just now he's only maybe 15 minutes away in the car.
0:22:14 > 0:22:16To the other side of the world, it's...
0:22:19 > 0:22:21It's a big difference, a big difference.
0:22:23 > 0:22:25He's everything to me.
0:22:28 > 0:22:31Remember, this is for life, go and enjoy it.
0:22:39 > 0:22:42- CRIES:- Go and enjoy, Bill, and remember,
0:22:42 > 0:22:45I'll only be a phone call away when yous are away,
0:22:45 > 0:22:51and I love yous to bits. But enjoy your new life out there.
0:22:51 > 0:22:53PAUL CRIES
0:22:53 > 0:22:55Hey, come on.
0:22:55 > 0:22:57Come on.
0:22:57 > 0:22:58Come on, now.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01Hey, come on, it's not that bad.
0:23:01 > 0:23:06Come on. Come on.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10You'll see her again very soon. You know that, don't you?
0:23:10 > 0:23:12You'll see her next week.
0:23:12 > 0:23:13Right?
0:23:15 > 0:23:17Seeing messages from the people they love
0:23:17 > 0:23:20was a painful experience for everyone.
0:23:21 > 0:23:25It was now time to cast the last and most decisive vote.
0:23:25 > 0:23:26Had the taste of a new life
0:23:26 > 0:23:30convinced the family to leave everything in the UK?
0:23:37 > 0:23:39- ALL:- New Zealand.
0:23:39 > 0:23:41Why did you pick New Zealand?
0:23:41 > 0:23:44I picked New Zealand because I had a really good time.
0:23:44 > 0:23:46What about you, missus?
0:23:46 > 0:23:49I know. Kind of surprised myself.
0:23:49 > 0:23:53I think with it being such a nice place to bring up the boys.
0:23:53 > 0:23:55You guys are the most important things to us,
0:23:55 > 0:24:01the lifestyle that we can have, I think we can make it work here.
0:24:01 > 0:24:04THEY LAUGH
0:24:10 > 0:24:12When we caught up with them in 2014,
0:24:12 > 0:24:15the family were living in Wellington in New Zealand.
0:24:18 > 0:24:19Beth had been convinced
0:24:19 > 0:24:22a better lifestyle awaited her family down under.
0:24:23 > 0:24:26At the end of the trial week,
0:24:26 > 0:24:28I think we had realised
0:24:28 > 0:24:33just how family-focused New Zealand is as a whole.
0:24:33 > 0:24:37People were very friendly, welcoming,
0:24:37 > 0:24:40and the boys enjoyed the great outdoors,
0:24:40 > 0:24:41being in and around nature,
0:24:41 > 0:24:46and I think, by the end of the week, it was an easy decision.
0:24:46 > 0:24:48And breaking the news to her mum
0:24:48 > 0:24:51that they were moving to the other side of the world
0:24:51 > 0:24:54had been easier than expected.
0:24:54 > 0:24:56She put the kettle on, sat down and said,
0:24:56 > 0:24:58"OK, so when are yous going?"
0:24:58 > 0:25:02I don't think that she ever thought we would stay in Scotland.
0:25:02 > 0:25:04She knew, deep down,
0:25:04 > 0:25:08that it was best for the kids to make the move.
0:25:08 > 0:25:11The Fitzpatricks began planning to emigrate.
0:25:11 > 0:25:13After their trial week,
0:25:13 > 0:25:16they had stayed on in New Zealand touring the North Island,
0:25:16 > 0:25:19where Billy made enquiries at prisons.
0:25:19 > 0:25:21I had an interview in two of them,
0:25:21 > 0:25:23and I was, again, fortunate enough
0:25:23 > 0:25:25to be offered positions in both of them.
0:25:25 > 0:25:28Billy accepted a job offer from a prison in Wellington,
0:25:28 > 0:25:32and after waiting 11 months to get the paperwork processed,
0:25:32 > 0:25:34he was finally on his way.
0:25:34 > 0:25:38I had 11 days from the minute my visa landed
0:25:38 > 0:25:41to me getting on a plane and leaving.
0:25:43 > 0:25:45Less than two weeks later,
0:25:45 > 0:25:48Beth and the boys had waved Billy off at Glasgow Airport,
0:25:48 > 0:25:51not knowing for sure when they'd be together again.
0:25:51 > 0:25:56This was something we found Paul really struggled with,
0:25:56 > 0:25:58and I think it was because he didn't know
0:25:58 > 0:26:01when the next time was going to be that he would,
0:26:01 > 0:26:03you know, see his dad again.
0:26:03 > 0:26:06It was immensely hard saying goodbye to them.
0:26:06 > 0:26:12But again, we made a decision that we were going to keep it brief.
0:26:13 > 0:26:17Beth was left to pack up the family's life in the UK.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20Selling the house was heartbreaking.
0:26:20 > 0:26:23It was very difficult, very stressful,
0:26:23 > 0:26:26and lots of sleepless nights.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28Beth and the boys were finally reunited with Billy
0:26:28 > 0:26:31in February 2014,
0:26:31 > 0:26:32and were preparing to move
0:26:32 > 0:26:35into their dream home in Upper Hutt soon after.
0:26:36 > 0:26:39The house is everything that we would want it to be.
0:26:39 > 0:26:42Six bedrooms, three bathrooms, a cinema room,
0:26:42 > 0:26:44it's got everything it needs to have.
0:26:44 > 0:26:45It's a beautiful area.
0:26:45 > 0:26:47Beautiful street.
0:26:47 > 0:26:49Lots and lots of space.
0:26:49 > 0:26:53So I'm really looking forward to making it a home for the boys.
0:26:54 > 0:26:58With keys in hand, the family were keen to get settled in.
0:26:58 > 0:27:00Very careful.
0:27:01 > 0:27:03Everything is...
0:27:03 > 0:27:04a bit crazy.
0:27:08 > 0:27:11Billy was enjoying work at a nearby prison,
0:27:11 > 0:27:12but had already set his sights
0:27:12 > 0:27:13on moving up the ranks.
0:27:15 > 0:27:17I'm currently a corrections officer,
0:27:17 > 0:27:19which is the first rung on the ladder.
0:27:19 > 0:27:23I've applied for a promotion to a senior corrections officer,
0:27:23 > 0:27:28where they look for a bit of experience, a bit of leadership.
0:27:29 > 0:27:32Billy got the job he wanted, and overall
0:27:32 > 0:27:35it looked like New Zealand was delivering on all fronts.
0:27:35 > 0:27:39We're spending just about every waking moment together.
0:27:39 > 0:27:42Whereas before we would have just sat at home, stuck the telly on,
0:27:42 > 0:27:44or been on the computer.
0:27:44 > 0:27:47We're getting out, exploring, going walking,
0:27:47 > 0:27:48the boys have taken up fishing.
0:27:49 > 0:27:51Oh! Is that rod twitching?
0:27:51 > 0:27:54But the boys had mixed opinions on the climate.
0:27:54 > 0:27:57I like living in New Zealand because it's nice and hot
0:27:57 > 0:27:59and we never had that back in Scotland.
0:27:59 > 0:28:02But it's too windy and cold.
0:28:02 > 0:28:05Sometimes, Lucas, sometimes.
0:28:05 > 0:28:06Sometimes.
0:28:07 > 0:28:09Arguments with his brother aside,
0:28:09 > 0:28:13nature-mad Paul was spending more time up close with wildlife.
0:28:13 > 0:28:14Mum, look at me.
0:28:17 > 0:28:21We've seen some cicadas, we've seen...
0:28:21 > 0:28:23We've seen some fish.
0:28:23 > 0:28:27We've seen crabs, we've seen starfish.
0:28:27 > 0:28:31- We've been lucky.- You know what I saw on my own?
0:28:31 > 0:28:33A dead sock.
0:28:33 > 0:28:36Beth and Billy believed the country's outdoor lifestyle
0:28:36 > 0:28:38had helped the boys settle.
0:28:38 > 0:28:41I think because we've been out and about and did so much exploring,
0:28:41 > 0:28:44and going on so many adventures for them,
0:28:44 > 0:28:46I think that's helped greatly...
0:28:47 > 0:28:51..in them becoming used to living here and calling this their home.
0:28:51 > 0:28:56But there was something, or rather someone, everyone missed from home.
0:28:56 > 0:28:58I really miss my gran.
0:28:58 > 0:29:00I miss her yummy cooking.
0:29:00 > 0:29:03Without a doubt, they are missing Granny.
0:29:03 > 0:29:05Who wouldn't? She's a great person.
0:29:07 > 0:29:10And not physically having a hug off her
0:29:10 > 0:29:13has been difficult at times, particularly for the big fella.
0:29:14 > 0:29:17The couple were also missing some home comforts.
0:29:18 > 0:29:19Teabags.
0:29:20 > 0:29:22I can't have a proper cup of tea.
0:29:22 > 0:29:25And I miss the school dinners.
0:29:25 > 0:29:27- A curry.- Yeah.
0:29:28 > 0:29:32If you go for a Chinese takeaway, it's completely different here.
0:29:32 > 0:29:36Plain bread and square sausage and brown sauce
0:29:36 > 0:29:39and a big mug of tea on a Sunday morning with the newspaper.
0:29:39 > 0:29:40That doesn't happen here.
0:29:40 > 0:29:44But ultimately, the Fitzpatricks had no regrets.
0:29:44 > 0:29:47In the future, I am hoping that we have a nice happy life
0:29:47 > 0:29:49and it all turns out well.
0:29:49 > 0:29:54We make lots of new friends and we get into lots of after-school clubs.
0:29:54 > 0:30:01My hopes for the future are living in a nice airy family beach house
0:30:01 > 0:30:03and I think, once I get that...
0:30:05 > 0:30:06..I'll be living the dream.
0:30:07 > 0:30:11To anyone out there who has got doubts or fears...
0:30:13 > 0:30:17..I had all of those doubts and fears and I didn't want to come,
0:30:17 > 0:30:21but now that I've been out here and I've experienced the country
0:30:21 > 0:30:25and the people, I would recommend anyone to give it a go.
0:30:25 > 0:30:28Our future, in my eyes, is here now.
0:30:31 > 0:30:33For me, also, the future's got to be here.
0:30:40 > 0:30:43With Billy's promotion in the prison service,
0:30:43 > 0:30:47it looked like the Fitzpatricks were all set
0:30:47 > 0:30:50for a very happy future in New Zealand.
0:30:50 > 0:30:51Two years later,
0:30:51 > 0:30:55we've caught up with them again to find out where they are now.
0:30:57 > 0:30:59It's May 2016,
0:30:59 > 0:31:03and Billy, Beth, Paul and Lucas have relocated to...
0:31:03 > 0:31:04Raumati Beach,
0:31:04 > 0:31:07just over 30 miles north-west of Wellington.
0:31:07 > 0:31:10But although not far from the house we last saw them in,
0:31:10 > 0:31:13the move has been far from straightforward.
0:31:13 > 0:31:15I don't believe you want to put butter
0:31:15 > 0:31:17on that tiny, tiny, tiny little bit.
0:31:17 > 0:31:20In the months after we last caught up with the family,
0:31:20 > 0:31:23the lure of the country Billy had longed to call home
0:31:23 > 0:31:26had begun to lose its shine.
0:31:26 > 0:31:28On the surface, everything looked good.
0:31:28 > 0:31:31We had the beach on our doorstep, a really good job,
0:31:31 > 0:31:33the kids were thriving.
0:31:33 > 0:31:35Beth was loving it.
0:31:35 > 0:31:38It looked great. Everything appeared to be great.
0:31:39 > 0:31:40But it wasn't.
0:31:40 > 0:31:43My mum came for a visit.
0:31:43 > 0:31:46Billy very quickly became homesick.
0:31:46 > 0:31:51It had been gradual and there had been many conversations
0:31:51 > 0:31:53about things that he had missed,
0:31:53 > 0:31:56and was it really worth giving up the life that we had
0:31:56 > 0:32:02to be so far away and missing so much about our life in Scotland?
0:32:02 > 0:32:05That's that question, isn't it? What's the weather like?
0:32:06 > 0:32:09Things came to a head when Billy was invited to the wedding
0:32:09 > 0:32:12of one of his closest friends' sons back in the UK.
0:32:13 > 0:32:17I was supposed to be there, and because I wasn't going to be there,
0:32:17 > 0:32:19that was tough.
0:32:19 > 0:32:22And I didn't think something like that would hit me as hard...
0:32:25 > 0:32:28..but I think it was a combination of a lot of different things.
0:32:28 > 0:32:32That was just the kind of straw that broke the camel's back.
0:32:32 > 0:32:36Seeing how upset he was, Beth decided it was time for action.
0:32:36 > 0:32:40Watching Billy crumble was just the final nail in the coffin for me.
0:32:40 > 0:32:44We made the decision that night that we were going home,
0:32:44 > 0:32:47and because we couldn't afford to go back for a holiday,
0:32:47 > 0:32:48we just decided,
0:32:48 > 0:32:52"Right, let's just sell everything we have, book the flights
0:32:52 > 0:32:54"and go back."
0:32:54 > 0:32:55Tell Granny.
0:32:55 > 0:32:58- Look at the camera.- 'Are you still playing football?'
0:32:58 > 0:33:00Yeah, I'm still playing.
0:33:00 > 0:33:02'Are you scoring the goals?'
0:33:02 > 0:33:04- No.- He's a defender, aren't you?
0:33:05 > 0:33:08I just tackle and pass it.
0:33:08 > 0:33:10Paul and Lucas were quite happy to pack up
0:33:10 > 0:33:13and return to their old life in the UK too.
0:33:13 > 0:33:14At that point...
0:33:16 > 0:33:18..all the boys could think about was seeing Granny.
0:33:20 > 0:33:21And a Chinese takeaway.
0:33:23 > 0:33:27Did he tell you what he did in science a few weeks ago?
0:33:27 > 0:33:29Ironically, the only person who wasn't thrilled
0:33:29 > 0:33:32about returning to Scotland was Beth.
0:33:33 > 0:33:37Even though it was me that made the decision to go back,
0:33:37 > 0:33:38I didn't want to go back.
0:33:38 > 0:33:41I was happy, I was settled.
0:33:42 > 0:33:46But it's not the dream when your whole family don't feel the same.
0:33:46 > 0:33:50With the decision made, Billy handed his notice in at work.
0:33:50 > 0:33:53Well, tried to, anyway.
0:33:53 > 0:33:56My boss at work, rather than accepting my resignation...
0:33:57 > 0:33:59..gave me 12 months' leave without pay.
0:34:00 > 0:34:02He said, "I know you'll come back.
0:34:02 > 0:34:04"You've worked so hard to get here.
0:34:04 > 0:34:06"Don't throw it all away."
0:34:06 > 0:34:09'Remember when we played Head And Shoulders with the singing?
0:34:10 > 0:34:11'Lucas...
0:34:11 > 0:34:14'# Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes... #'
0:34:14 > 0:34:16THEY LAUGH
0:34:16 > 0:34:20Scheduled to return to the UK just five weeks before they could qualify
0:34:20 > 0:34:22for permanent residency in New Zealand,
0:34:22 > 0:34:25they decided Beth and the boys would go first,
0:34:25 > 0:34:28in case any of them ever wanted to return.
0:34:28 > 0:34:31The first few weeks when we returned to Scotland,
0:34:31 > 0:34:33it was like the boys had never been away.
0:34:33 > 0:34:37They went back to the life that they knew, they were happy,
0:34:37 > 0:34:40it was approaching summertime, so they were out playing
0:34:40 > 0:34:42with people they knew.
0:34:42 > 0:34:47Staying with her mum, Beth found the move harder than anticipated.
0:34:47 > 0:34:48- Bye!- 'Love you!'
0:34:48 > 0:34:54It was difficult, because I was so glad to be back where I come from,
0:34:54 > 0:34:58but I was torn apart because my heart was somewhere else.
0:34:59 > 0:35:02And when it came to Billy's departure day,
0:35:02 > 0:35:03he had mixed emotions, too.
0:35:05 > 0:35:08I missed Wellington the minute I got on that plane.
0:35:10 > 0:35:13When you take off, and you're straight over the water,
0:35:13 > 0:35:14I just... I didn't...
0:35:15 > 0:35:17I knew I had to go back, I knew I had to go back,
0:35:17 > 0:35:19but the minute I left,
0:35:19 > 0:35:22I started missing this place.
0:35:22 > 0:35:24Once reunited in Scotland,
0:35:24 > 0:35:26it wasn't long before Billy and Beth were discussing
0:35:26 > 0:35:30where their future really lay once again.
0:35:30 > 0:35:31Three days after arriving,
0:35:31 > 0:35:34Beth and I were sitting having a private moment,
0:35:34 > 0:35:37and she looked at me, she said, "What are you thinking?"
0:35:37 > 0:35:39I said, "You don't want to know what I'm thinking."
0:35:39 > 0:35:42He said to me, "I think we've made the wrong decision."
0:35:44 > 0:35:49So, we knew, we knew we had to change where we were going to be.
0:35:51 > 0:35:54Having flown halfway around the world to get there,
0:35:54 > 0:35:58Beth and Billy felt they had to give life in Scotland a fair try.
0:35:58 > 0:36:00Billy returned to his old job,
0:36:00 > 0:36:03and the family moved into rented accommodation,
0:36:03 > 0:36:07but New Zealand was still on their mind.
0:36:07 > 0:36:08Several weeks later...
0:36:09 > 0:36:14..I went to a psychic evening, and before I went
0:36:14 > 0:36:17we had actually started pricing up flights
0:36:17 > 0:36:22and...when I was at this psychic night,
0:36:22 > 0:36:24my dad and my brother both came through...
0:36:26 > 0:36:30..and they both said,
0:36:30 > 0:36:34"Stop talking about the flights and just book them,"
0:36:34 > 0:36:37which totally blew me away.
0:36:38 > 0:36:40Throwing caution to the wind,
0:36:40 > 0:36:44the couple made the bold decision to give New Zealand a second chance,
0:36:44 > 0:36:48despite concerns about uprooting the boys all over again.
0:36:48 > 0:36:51The gravity of what we were about to do was such
0:36:51 > 0:36:55that we just didn't want to tell them until we HAD to tell them.
0:37:00 > 0:37:04The family returned down under in November 2015,
0:37:04 > 0:37:07and settled back into the life by the beach
0:37:07 > 0:37:09they'd left just a few months earlier.
0:37:09 > 0:37:12I was literally five days back in the country
0:37:12 > 0:37:14and I was back working in the prison again.
0:37:14 > 0:37:17The kids were enrolled in the school and back at school.
0:37:17 > 0:37:21We made a bad decision, we went to Scotland.
0:37:21 > 0:37:24Then we came back and that's this.
0:37:24 > 0:37:26That's that.
0:37:26 > 0:37:28They initially rented this four-bedroom house
0:37:28 > 0:37:30in Raumati Beach for six months,
0:37:30 > 0:37:33but have since made it a more permanent home.
0:37:33 > 0:37:37In the past three weeks, we've actually now just bought the house,
0:37:37 > 0:37:41which is great, because it's now somewhere to call our own.
0:37:50 > 0:37:53This is a kitchen/diner.
0:37:53 > 0:37:57Clearly needs lots of work done.
0:37:57 > 0:37:58Going to be busy.
0:37:58 > 0:37:59HE LAUGHS
0:38:02 > 0:38:05This is Lucas's room. This is one of three big bedrooms down the stair.
0:38:05 > 0:38:07There he is.
0:38:07 > 0:38:09And another feature was all the sliders,
0:38:09 > 0:38:12all the ranch sliders that come off every bedroom.
0:38:12 > 0:38:14Straight out onto the deck,
0:38:14 > 0:38:19so the downside to that is that when we think they're still sleeping...
0:38:20 > 0:38:22..the two of them are sitting out there playing,
0:38:22 > 0:38:25you know, at night. So, we need to keep an eye on that.
0:38:25 > 0:38:27But, no, really, really good-sized rooms.
0:38:27 > 0:38:29THEY LAUGH
0:38:34 > 0:38:38Good-sized back garden. The kids are down there somewhere.
0:38:40 > 0:38:41And look at the view.
0:38:41 > 0:38:44The hills in the distance.
0:38:44 > 0:38:45Very private.
0:38:47 > 0:38:49Really nice. Really nice.
0:38:56 > 0:38:57It's very, very clear...
0:38:58 > 0:39:00..we've now put our roots down.
0:39:01 > 0:39:03We've done all that wandering,
0:39:03 > 0:39:06wandering and wondering, if you like.
0:39:06 > 0:39:09We now know, this is it for us.
0:39:09 > 0:39:11And buying this place was just...
0:39:11 > 0:39:13That's sealing the deal.
0:39:16 > 0:39:20Paul and Lucas are both coping well with being back down under.
0:39:20 > 0:39:24When we got back, it was just nice weather for weeks.
0:39:25 > 0:39:26Nice house.
0:39:27 > 0:39:29Good friends.
0:39:29 > 0:39:31I've been going to school a lot.
0:39:33 > 0:39:37I've been on some play dates and parties.
0:39:37 > 0:39:39Yes, they miss their friends in Twechar...
0:39:40 > 0:39:42..they miss their Saturday-night takeaways...
0:39:44 > 0:39:47..but the boys don't really talk about life in Scotland any more.
0:39:53 > 0:39:57Now in his teens, Paul's making the most of life by the coast.
0:39:57 > 0:40:00We've joined quite a few clubs.
0:40:00 > 0:40:03I've got sailing all year round.
0:40:03 > 0:40:06Spring and summer, we've got sailing, and then autumn and winter,
0:40:06 > 0:40:08we've got, like, in the Scout Den,
0:40:08 > 0:40:12and we're learning to tie knots and how to set the boats up properly.
0:40:14 > 0:40:16We are definitely enjoying our clubs.
0:40:23 > 0:40:27In the past few weeks, Billy has also been promoted at work.
0:40:27 > 0:40:31A vacancy came up for a senior management post.
0:40:31 > 0:40:33It was a job I knew I could do.
0:40:33 > 0:40:36I decided I wanted to stretch myself a little bit more.
0:40:36 > 0:40:39The new job was in the same office Billy visited
0:40:39 > 0:40:41during his trial week four years ago.
0:40:41 > 0:40:45The bad news is that's over 300 miles away in Auckland,
0:40:45 > 0:40:48but the good news is, he has every weekend off.
0:41:03 > 0:41:05As much as he's not here Monday to Friday...
0:41:06 > 0:41:09..the boys are actually getting more quality time with Billy
0:41:09 > 0:41:12because they have him all weekend long.
0:41:15 > 0:41:19The Fitzpatricks have proven to be ping-pong Poms,
0:41:19 > 0:41:23but it looks like they've finally made themselves at home down under.
0:41:26 > 0:41:30It's been a massive roller-coaster, huge roller-coaster.
0:41:31 > 0:41:35Emotionally, we've been dragged around the place, all four of us.
0:41:38 > 0:41:40But we all now know...
0:41:41 > 0:41:42..even the kids...
0:41:43 > 0:41:47..that this is where we are and this is where we want to be.
0:41:47 > 0:41:48And because we've been back
0:41:48 > 0:41:50and had a look at the other side of our lives
0:41:50 > 0:41:51back in Scotland...
0:41:53 > 0:41:55..we now know that this is the right place for us.
0:41:59 > 0:42:02I was gutted at going back, but I'm glad we did it
0:42:02 > 0:42:04because I know now that...
0:42:05 > 0:42:08..it's definitely been the right decision for us
0:42:08 > 0:42:09to come here as a family.
0:42:09 > 0:42:12- My feet are getting wet.- You don't really want wet socks, do you?
0:42:12 > 0:42:14I found a wet sock!
0:42:16 > 0:42:17It was a dead sock.
0:42:20 > 0:42:23That's what you get, smarty-pants.
0:42:25 > 0:42:28And when I'm down on the beach watching Paul out on a sailboat,
0:42:28 > 0:42:29I am living the dream.
0:42:29 > 0:42:32As far as me and Lucas go, we're really enjoying life here.
0:42:32 > 0:42:34Ready?
0:42:34 > 0:42:37You threw yours at the front.
0:42:37 > 0:42:39You're obviously going to win, aren't you?
0:42:42 > 0:42:45But the best part about being here is that we're all here,
0:42:45 > 0:42:47we're together and we're happy.
0:42:56 > 0:42:59Billy and Beth are more convinced than ever
0:42:59 > 0:43:02their family belongs in New Zealand.
0:43:02 > 0:43:06With two international moves under their belt in as many years,
0:43:06 > 0:43:09they're testament to the motto, if at first you don't succeed,
0:43:09 > 0:43:11try, try again.
0:43:11 > 0:43:16We wish them, Paul and Lucas a very happy future down under.
