0:00:02 > 0:00:04Imagine if, after years of discussion,

0:00:04 > 0:00:08you'd finally persuaded your partner to consider emigrating

0:00:08 > 0:00:10to the other side of the world,

0:00:10 > 0:00:13only to discover your teenaged children

0:00:13 > 0:00:15still needed to be convinced.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19That's the situation Lyn Horn was in back in 2010

0:00:19 > 0:00:23when her family set off on a trial week to Adelaide.

0:00:23 > 0:00:27Six years later, we'll find out where and how the Horns are now.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32For 30 years, Lyn Horn believed in a life down under,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35but her children didn't share that dream.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39I'm not only losing a boyfriend, but I'm losing a friend.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41And the thought of splitting the family in two

0:00:41 > 0:00:44was hard for everyone to comprehend.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47I couldn't stay in England

0:00:47 > 0:00:50and have these three out in Australia, I couldn't do it.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54Today, we'll find out if the Horns stayed in the UK or, together,

0:00:54 > 0:00:57made the leap to the other side of the world.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59You just don't know what to do when it gets to that stage.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02You know, is it worth then going?

0:01:24 > 0:01:29Lyn Horn had dreamt of moving to Australia ever since childhood.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31After years of discussion,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33husband Andy was finally in agreement

0:01:33 > 0:01:37the country could be somewhere they could call home.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40But with two teenaged children less than convinced,

0:01:40 > 0:01:44the family's future was far from certain.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47A trial week in Adelaide in 2010

0:01:47 > 0:01:50gave the whole family a taste of what life could be like

0:01:50 > 0:01:54and the chance to decide once and for all

0:01:54 > 0:01:59whether to stay in the UK or make the move down under.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02Back then, glazier Andy and preschool teacher Lyn Horn

0:02:02 > 0:02:04lived in Herne Bay in Kent.

0:02:04 > 0:02:10Their son Chris was aged 18 and daughter Kirsty, 17.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12They had built a good life for themselves,

0:02:12 > 0:02:16but it wasn't enough for Lyn and she was desperate for change.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18I have wanted to go since I was about nine.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21My mum went to Australia on a cricket tour with my dad

0:02:21 > 0:02:24and they came back absolutely raving about the place,

0:02:24 > 0:02:26and I told Andy that when I met him

0:02:26 > 0:02:28and we've tried a couple of times, we've looked into it,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31but we've always thought that something wasn't quite right,

0:02:31 > 0:02:32timings weren't right.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35She talked Andy into giving Australia a try,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37but he wasn't convinced.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40It's been a long, long time since she first dreamed about going,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43but I'm not sure whether she is really committed

0:02:43 > 0:02:46to leaving everything she's got to make that big move.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50There were two other potential problems.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52Chris and Kirsty.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54They were old enough to stay at home on their own,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57but Lyn wouldn't contemplate splitting the family up.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02We want more for the children, for their futures,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05which we don't think they're going to get over here.

0:03:05 > 0:03:06About to leave school,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08the timing couldn't have been worse for Chris.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11He needed some serious persuading.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15For me, I feel a bit confused as to where I am and what could happen

0:03:15 > 0:03:16within the next couple of years.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18It's going to have a massive impact on all of us.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22For Kirsty, leaving a group of friends and her boyfriend behind

0:03:22 > 0:03:23was unthinkable.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27If we did make the move, we'd be leaving so much behind.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29I love life as it is now.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32I'm not sure if it's worth giving up.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40But Andy could see the possibilities down under and had grand plans.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45If I do get any time off work, then I'm out on the golf course.

0:03:45 > 0:03:46Playing somewhere.

0:03:46 > 0:03:51I've always wanted to build myself a small crazy golf centre.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Yeah, that would be my ultimate dream.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58Even so, he was heading out to Australia with some doubts.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03There's still a lot of convincing for me to go as well, I think.

0:04:03 > 0:04:08If things don't work out this side, for us to make that initial move,

0:04:08 > 0:04:12then no, we don't go, basically.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16Still believing it was the right move, for Lyn,

0:04:16 > 0:04:18there was only one barrier.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21Finances are the only thing

0:04:21 > 0:04:24that could actually stop it from occurring, I think.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26Selling Andy's business, selling the house,

0:04:26 > 0:04:28getting the money we need for the house

0:04:28 > 0:04:30to then make the move over,

0:04:30 > 0:04:32it's purely financial.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46To find out where their future lay, the Horns visited Adelaide.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49After a 23-hour journey across two continents,

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Kirsty was feeling a little emotional.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55We've had tears on the way. But...

0:04:55 > 0:04:59- Don't, because I'll start again. - No, you won't.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Lyn and Andy were more positive.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04Really looking forward to it.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Yeah, here we come, Adelaide.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11Lyn had to persuade the whole family Australia was for them,

0:05:11 > 0:05:13if she was to realise her dream.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Their home for the week was in Henley Beach,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21and it was the perfect place to explore the area.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27They were soon feeling the effects of a long journey.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31Being on the flight for 23 hours overall...

0:05:33 > 0:05:37..definitely made me realise how far Australia is away from home.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39Kirsty had a lot to leave behind,

0:05:39 > 0:05:44so Andy and Lyn had a huge challenge ahead to persuade her to move.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47We're going to try really hard throughout this week...

0:05:48 > 0:05:52..to try and make a point that this is going to be a really good idea

0:05:52 > 0:05:55and there's going to be everything for her that she wants here.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58Which is why the week is so important for us.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00Yeah, not just for us, but for Kirsty as well.

0:06:02 > 0:06:03With so much to consider,

0:06:03 > 0:06:06the week ahead would be full of difficult decisions

0:06:06 > 0:06:09as they found out if Australia really was for them.

0:06:16 > 0:06:17Back in the UK,

0:06:17 > 0:06:20the Horn family lived in a three-bedroom end terrace property

0:06:20 > 0:06:21in Herne Bay.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25They love their home, but ideally wanted something a little bigger.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33If they got the £175,000 they hoped their house was worth,

0:06:33 > 0:06:38they would have a budget of £230,000 to spend in Australia.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45We showed them three properties in Adelaide

0:06:45 > 0:06:48to give them an idea of what they could afford.

0:06:48 > 0:06:49Property one was in Seaton,

0:06:49 > 0:06:52a busy suburb 25 minutes from the city centre

0:06:52 > 0:06:55and only ten minutes from the beach.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01This Tudor style three-bedroom property was under budget

0:07:01 > 0:07:04at £210,000.

0:07:04 > 0:07:05It needed some updating,

0:07:05 > 0:07:07but would the Horns see its potential?

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- About the size...- Yeah, about the same size as ours, really.

0:07:13 > 0:07:14I like the small room as well.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20I've always wanted the kitchen and diner combined.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22- Yeah, the open-plan.- Yeah.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26- Nice size. - Yeah. It's not bad, is it?

0:07:26 > 0:07:29I'd be happy with this view as well.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33Outside was an alfresco dining area, very typical of Australian homes.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35This is nice, I like this.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39You probably get about three days a year in the UK for barbecues.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Here, it's probably three days a week.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44I really like the house. It's a good size.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46The driveway space is a bit limited, isn't it?

0:07:46 > 0:07:50- Yeah.- There'd be a big fight for the last spot each night.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53The bijou driveway had ruled out property one.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55Could property two win them over?

0:07:57 > 0:08:00It was in the suburb of Queenstown, where property prices were generally

0:08:00 > 0:08:02lower than the city average.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06This huge house offered four good-sized bedrooms

0:08:06 > 0:08:08and a massive living space.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13All for £233,000.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17Estate agent Sean O'Hara was waiting to show them around.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19It definitely had the space they wanted,

0:08:19 > 0:08:21but would it impress the Horn family?

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Wow!

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Kirst, I would be in my element.

0:08:25 > 0:08:26- I want this room.- Do you?- Yeah.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29- You can't have it. - Dad, you can be in the other room.

0:08:31 > 0:08:32Wow!

0:08:32 > 0:08:35You could fit our house in this space.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37And I'm not joking. Seriously.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40- So it's big enough for you, then? - Just a little bit.

0:08:40 > 0:08:45The property seemed to be going down well until Andy spotted a problem.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47It hasn't got any air con at all, has it?

0:08:47 > 0:08:50No, it doesn't. There is an air conditioner in the lounge,

0:08:50 > 0:08:52but you'd probably still want that upgraded.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56Would the final house be more in line with what they were after?

0:08:56 > 0:08:59On the market for £255,000,

0:08:59 > 0:09:01this four-bedroom,

0:09:01 > 0:09:04two-bathroom house was £25,000 over budget.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07With a large garden and spectacular views,

0:09:07 > 0:09:10could they be persuaded to stretch their finances?

0:09:12 > 0:09:16- This is nice.- That's huge. You can see the sea from here.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18- Beautiful, isn't it?- It is lovely.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21This house had impressed everyone so far.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23- It's nice.- Oh, wow!

0:09:23 > 0:09:25You wouldn't have to do anything here, would you?

0:09:25 > 0:09:27No, you could just move in.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29And the garden really hit the spot.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Stunning, isn't it? There's not much maintenance really.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35- Not at all.- Cutting the grass and watering the plants.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39There was just the master bedroom to seal the deal.

0:09:39 > 0:09:40Oh, my Lord!

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- Look at this.- Oh, wow.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49- Now this... - ..is the bee's knees.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52Oh, wow. Look at those views.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54The views...all the way round, by the looks of it.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Who wouldn't want to live in this house?

0:09:57 > 0:09:58This is just mad.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01I would do anything to have this house.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03This is absolutely amazing.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06Andy had fallen in love with the place,

0:10:06 > 0:10:10but would need a well-paid job to be able to afford it.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16The Horn family liked property one, but lack of parking was a problem.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18Property two had the floor space,

0:10:18 > 0:10:21but they couldn't see themselves living there.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27While over budget, property three was the dream house.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31But giving up their home in Herne Bay wouldn't be easy.

0:10:31 > 0:10:36Had they seen enough in Australia to make it worthwhile?

0:10:36 > 0:10:37It was time to vote on property.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42Based on the houses we've seen today,

0:10:42 > 0:10:43our vote is going to be...

0:10:54 > 0:10:57- Australia.- Australia.- Australia.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59- Can't compare, really, can you? - No.- No.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01We're at that vital stage now,

0:11:01 > 0:11:04we really need to know our budget, what we can afford.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07Yeah, the dream is to sell the house and the business,

0:11:07 > 0:11:10make a bit of profit on both of them

0:11:10 > 0:11:13and then have that as a set-up, really,

0:11:13 > 0:11:15for coming out here and starting a new life.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25Back in the UK, Lyn was a preschool supervisor.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27I do actually love my job.

0:11:27 > 0:11:28I don't get up in the morning and think,

0:11:28 > 0:11:29"I don't want to go to work."

0:11:31 > 0:11:35She had been working with young children for 24 years.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37Lyn would have to work more hours in Australia,

0:11:37 > 0:11:42but hoped that would mean a decent hike on her annual £14,000 earnings.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48Lyn visited a preschool in the heart of Adelaide

0:11:48 > 0:11:51to find out more about working in Australia.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55I'm a little bit nervous at the minute and a bit excited.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59I really just want to get an overall view of how the systems work.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02An idea of wages and hours would be good.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06She met with preschool director Melissa Ray for a rapid introduction

0:12:06 > 0:12:08into teaching down under.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12Do you want to come through and I'll show you the classroom?

0:12:12 > 0:12:14It was straight in at the deep end for Lyn,

0:12:14 > 0:12:17but there was a great reception waiting for her.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20- ALL:- Hi, Lyn. - Hello.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23With creative learning a key philosophy at this school,

0:12:23 > 0:12:25she seemed to have fitted in perfectly.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28Have they all gone? You did good pinning.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31As Lyn settled into a day at work,

0:12:31 > 0:12:32Andy was determined to find out

0:12:32 > 0:12:35if his dream of owning a mini golf course

0:12:35 > 0:12:37could be viable in Australia.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43He met course owner Brian to discuss the pros and cons of the business

0:12:43 > 0:12:44over a quick game.

0:12:45 > 0:12:50There you go. Look at that. Oh, excuse me!

0:12:50 > 0:12:53Andy was planning to sell his glazing business back in the UK

0:12:53 > 0:12:56to help fund the set-up for a mini golf course like Brian's,

0:12:56 > 0:13:00but there were some costs he hadn't even thought of.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02The maintenance involved in mini golf

0:13:02 > 0:13:07is obviously keeping the greens nice and clean.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09Probably to carpet, something like this

0:13:09 > 0:13:12is going to cost you probably 30 or 40,000, it's not cheap.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14But before he even considered that,

0:13:14 > 0:13:18Andy would need to find a plot of land on which to build his business.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22If you're starting from scratch, you've obviously got to buy land

0:13:22 > 0:13:24and it's got to be in the right place, too.

0:13:24 > 0:13:29It would properly make 85% of your income

0:13:29 > 0:13:30during school holidays.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33The only day we close here is Christmas Day.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35The more he heard, the more Andy realised

0:13:35 > 0:13:37his plans were out of reach.

0:13:37 > 0:13:42Well, my dream for this golf, mini golf,

0:13:42 > 0:13:45I think, is going to stay a dream, to be quite honest with you.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48It looks like he would have to find an alternative income,

0:13:48 > 0:13:52so it was even more important Lyn was happy teaching in Australia.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Back at the school, she was curious to find out if she could earn

0:13:55 > 0:13:59enough money to stretch their property budget.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02If she couldn't, the whole move could be off.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04What would be the sort of start pay?

0:14:04 > 0:14:07If you were to work at our centre, it's about 880 a week,

0:14:07 > 0:14:11so it's about 46,000 a year to come and work here as a team leader.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14That was about £27,000 a year,

0:14:14 > 0:14:17almost double what Lyn was earning back in the UK.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20- Thank you very much. - It's been lovely to meet you.

0:14:20 > 0:14:21- Thank you.- All right.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27The wages would be better, but she'd have to work longer hours.

0:14:28 > 0:14:32Had it been enough to convince her to leave behind the school she loved

0:14:32 > 0:14:33in the UK?

0:14:34 > 0:14:37Based on what I've experienced today at the preschool,

0:14:37 > 0:14:39my vote for jobs would be...

0:14:42 > 0:14:43..Australia.

0:14:46 > 0:14:47I could really work in a place like that.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50The setting was lovely, the people were nice,

0:14:50 > 0:14:55that's sort of the setting that I would really fit into, I think.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Lyn had been impressed with work,

0:14:57 > 0:15:00but if Andy was unable to subsidise the income,

0:15:00 > 0:15:02it would impact on their finances.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11For the Horn family to achieve their dream home in Australia,

0:15:11 > 0:15:13they needed not only to secure good jobs,

0:15:13 > 0:15:17but also a decent price for their house in the UK.

0:15:17 > 0:15:21So we sent two estate agents round to give them valuations.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23- Look at that snow on the ground. - Here's our house!

0:15:25 > 0:15:27Not a large kitchen, but adequate.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30Hob, oven, could do with a bit of a clean.

0:15:32 > 0:15:33Quite a good size.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38Now, conservatory.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42The only problem being, maybe, it's not double-glazed.

0:15:42 > 0:15:43It IS double-glazed.

0:15:43 > 0:15:48It was an interesting start. Was the second opinion any better?

0:15:48 > 0:15:52Very usable space for a modern family.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54Nice, usable conservatory.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56Nice to see timber construction for a change.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58Not a large bathroom.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02And the master bedroom, yeah, it's a nice room.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06The family had believed it was worth £175,000.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Ideal family house, modern end terrace, recently built.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11If I was to put this property on the market today,

0:16:11 > 0:16:14I would value it around about 160,000.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16If the family were looking for a quick sale,

0:16:16 > 0:16:20I would recommend they put it on the market at, say, 154,950.

0:16:21 > 0:16:25In the current market, I would value this house at £169,000.

0:16:25 > 0:16:26If we wanted

0:16:26 > 0:16:29to get a queue at the door,

0:16:29 > 0:16:31if it was going to go on the market

0:16:31 > 0:16:34at between 160 and £165,000,

0:16:34 > 0:16:36then I feel it would go very quickly.

0:16:36 > 0:16:40We were hoping to come to Australia with a budget,

0:16:40 > 0:16:42and we've just watched that crumble, basically.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45But the house was only part of the package.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48They had to make a comparison between their UK finances

0:16:48 > 0:16:51and what they could afford in Australia.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54If they were going to struggle to have the life they wanted,

0:16:54 > 0:16:57Lyn's dream could be over.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00- Right, should we start with salary, then?- Yeah.

0:17:00 > 0:17:01That's your wage.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03Yeah. Before tax.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06So we bring home 42.4.

0:17:06 > 0:17:11If I worked 40 hours, I'd be bringing home 26,

0:17:11 > 0:17:16nearly 26.5, and you'd be bringing home 27.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18- That's a 4,000 drop.- Yeah.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21- But look, they clobber you for tax. - So, 6,000 a year.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24So, we'd be £500 a month worse off.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27Mortgage, we pay 450.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31Repayments...would be 969.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33We're doing it on property three, then?

0:17:33 > 0:17:35And groceries.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37- That's a bit small, look. - A bit small.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39- There we go.- That's perfect.

0:17:39 > 0:17:40Chicken's expensive, look.

0:17:40 > 0:17:435.72 to 6.79.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46- That's quite a jump. - It's about a pound.- Yeah.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Let's add up these monthly figures.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52UK is 1,855.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55And Australia is 2,605.

0:17:56 > 0:18:01That's 750 higher in Australia.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05- It almost looks like we've got to work...- Harder to...

0:18:05 > 0:18:08- To pay for that. - It would be tight, though.

0:18:08 > 0:18:09- Very tight.- Hm.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13Discovering they'd be £750 a month worse off in Australia

0:18:13 > 0:18:15was disappointing.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18The finances have got to start going

0:18:18 > 0:18:22the correct way now...to keep our dream alive.

0:18:22 > 0:18:27If they keep dipping and dipping, then our dream is fading with it.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29SHE SOBS

0:18:31 > 0:18:33Just realising that it might not ever happen.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39Lyn's worst nightmare had come true.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41So would they choose finances at home or away?

0:18:43 > 0:18:46That was a really hard exercise going through them figures.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51But our decision on cost of living is going to be...

0:18:53 > 0:18:54..UK.

0:18:55 > 0:18:56Australia.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01I thought you'd go the over way.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03You can think what you want to do.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07I think the cost of living is definitely better in the UK.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09The cost of living is better in the UK,

0:19:09 > 0:19:13but we looked at the most dearest house of the three.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16- I think, definitely, the dream is still on.- Yeah.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18And we're going to have to delve a little bit deeper

0:19:18 > 0:19:19to find that dream.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22I'm not backing down. The dream is still on for me.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25It's still on for me, even though I went that way.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33With so much to leave behind,

0:19:33 > 0:19:38socialising and making new friends was essential for the Horn family,

0:19:38 > 0:19:40so we arranged for them to make up with Paul Durgin,

0:19:40 > 0:19:43his wife, Lisa, and teenage children,

0:19:43 > 0:19:46Brittany and Henry, at a park in Adelaide.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48A little bit hot, is it?

0:19:48 > 0:19:50While the parents got to know each other better,

0:19:50 > 0:19:53the youngsters all headed off to explore the park.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56Chris and Kirsty were both worried they couldn't cope without

0:19:56 > 0:19:57their friends in the UK,

0:19:57 > 0:20:01so it was crucial they found out if they would fit in here.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04They used a leisurely paddle as a chance to get some answers

0:20:04 > 0:20:06from their new pals.

0:20:06 > 0:20:07I think we need to go that way.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13Kirsty had some serious issues to discuss with Brittany.

0:20:13 > 0:20:15- Have you got a boyfriend?- No.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18- Oh.- I hear you do, though. - Yeah. Back in England.

0:20:18 > 0:20:19- What's his name?- Callum.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21- Callum?- Yeah.- It's a nice name.

0:20:21 > 0:20:22- Bless him. - THEY LAUGH

0:20:22 > 0:20:24Yeah, tears at the airport.

0:20:24 > 0:20:25Oh, really?

0:20:25 > 0:20:27The boys had other priorities.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32And then most people play footy, for school and club footy.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34And then some other people play for league sides.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38- Right.- So, a lot of people play three lots of footy

0:20:38 > 0:20:39in, like, one week.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44After all that exercise,

0:20:44 > 0:20:48it was time to see if the local tucker would go down a treat.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50What have you got?

0:20:50 > 0:20:53We have goat's cheese, we have sheep's cheese, we have...

0:20:53 > 0:20:54Kangaroo cheese?

0:20:54 > 0:20:57If you can work out a way to milk a kangaroo,

0:20:57 > 0:20:59you're doing better than us.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03The family had had a fantastic time,

0:21:03 > 0:21:07but was their day sampling lifestyle down under enough to secure

0:21:07 > 0:21:09a unanimous vote for Australia?

0:21:11 > 0:21:12Our vote is going to be...

0:21:18 > 0:21:21- Halfway.- Halfway.

0:21:21 > 0:21:22Australia.

0:21:23 > 0:21:24Australia.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28A great family today.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30They're really sociable out here.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34And made us feel like part of a group already, in one day.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37So, really looking forward to meeting lots more people like that

0:21:37 > 0:21:39if we ever do get the move over here.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41While they had enjoyed their day out,

0:21:41 > 0:21:44the family were no closer to an agreement.

0:21:48 > 0:21:49Yes. Here we go.

0:21:49 > 0:21:53Messages from friends and family back home would make things

0:21:53 > 0:21:55even harder for the Horns.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58Hi, Lyn, Andy, Chris and Kirsty.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01Hello, Chris and Kirsty, Lyn and family.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04Lyn's a very responsible person, and as far as the family are

0:22:04 > 0:22:07concerned, well, I couldn't fault

0:22:07 > 0:22:10any of her way of bringing up, bringing the children.

0:22:10 > 0:22:12I've been very close to her all my life.

0:22:12 > 0:22:19When she met Andy, I felt that I was losing the closest thing I'd got,

0:22:19 > 0:22:21but realised that, in actual fact,

0:22:21 > 0:22:24I had actually gained a brother, not lost a sister.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27He is good company, good friend, good fun to be with.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30You just enjoy his company. No-one's got a bad word for him.

0:22:30 > 0:22:31I mean, he's one of the legends,

0:22:31 > 0:22:35one of the kingpins of the club, ex-captain.

0:22:35 > 0:22:39Chris is my closest and best friend because he's always there

0:22:39 > 0:22:42and he's always kind, and he'll always go out of his way

0:22:42 > 0:22:44more than my other friends will for me.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47Kirsty's just, she's really easy to like,

0:22:47 > 0:22:50a really likeable person.

0:22:50 > 0:22:51Funny, loves to shop.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54She's just constantly happy, talking to her friends.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59Bubbly person, always knows when to have a laugh.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03And cheers me up whenever I'm a bit unhappy.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05I want her to enjoy herself, but I don't want her to, like,

0:23:05 > 0:23:07love it that much that she stays over there.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09Yeah, we don't want her to leave.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11Kirsty belongs here with us, so...

0:23:11 > 0:23:13Naturally, I'd like to hope

0:23:13 > 0:23:18that they didn't make that decision to go permanently.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20I'd like to think that they would stay here.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25I'm really going to miss you if you go to Oz.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32Even though I'm going to miss you, I think it's a brave decision,

0:23:32 > 0:23:34and I'm going to really miss you.

0:23:41 > 0:23:45Hearing from loved ones made the pain of leaving even more real.

0:23:45 > 0:23:49It does make it hard to think about actually leaving Mum and Sue.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53Like, if we miss our friends after a week,

0:23:53 > 0:23:55imagine after, like, a month.

0:23:55 > 0:23:56It's going to be so hard.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58It hits you in the heart, doesn't it?

0:23:58 > 0:24:00Shows you how close they really are.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03And it would be the hardest decision, I think,

0:24:03 > 0:24:05to leave behind.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08But splitting up the family wasn't an option.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11I couldn't stay in Australia...

0:24:11 > 0:24:17Stay in England and have these three out in Australia.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19- And vice versa. - I couldn't do it.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29The week had been emotionally draining for the whole family,

0:24:29 > 0:24:33but for Chris, it was the extreme heat that worried him the most.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37I've had really bad headaches, stomach pains.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40It will affect my decision,

0:24:40 > 0:24:45because I'd have to deal with it all the time, obviously,

0:24:45 > 0:24:46because it's so hot.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49For Kirsty, the emotional pain was just as strong.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53I think I'm the one that would stop this move from happening.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57But the thing is, like, with Callum, I'm not only losing a boyfriend,

0:24:57 > 0:24:58but I'm losing a friend.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05Would the children stop Lyn fulfilling her dream?

0:25:05 > 0:25:09Potentially, either of them could say "no", to be fair.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12To lose one of them, one of them to say,

0:25:12 > 0:25:16"I want to stay in the UK," would break my heart, I think.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18We may have to face up to that, mightn't we?

0:25:18 > 0:25:20It might be a reality. That could happen, yeah.

0:25:20 > 0:25:21Yeah, it's just, you know,

0:25:21 > 0:25:24- we'll just have to take it a step at a time.- Yeah.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28When it came to the final decision, which way did they vote?

0:25:28 > 0:25:31This has been my dream, but now, it's time for the family to vote,

0:25:31 > 0:25:33and based on what we've experienced in Australia this week,

0:25:33 > 0:25:35our vote is going to be...

0:25:40 > 0:25:42Australia.

0:25:42 > 0:25:43Australia.

0:25:43 > 0:25:44Australia.

0:25:48 > 0:25:49Halfway.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53- I'm surprised at you, Christopher. - Yeah.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55I thought it was going to be a half, or...

0:25:55 > 0:25:57You've been ill virtually since you've been here.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00And you've looked over that. Well done. Hats off to you.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02That's a bit better than what I expected.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04- I thought... - You were going to go UK.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07Thank you. That's peace of mind for us.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10Thumbs up to Australia, and we'll work on that one.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12Yeah.

0:26:12 > 0:26:13- You can try.- OK.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26When we caught up with the Horns in 2011,

0:26:26 > 0:26:29the family were still living in the UK,

0:26:29 > 0:26:32but after their experience down under,

0:26:32 > 0:26:35Lyn was more convinced than ever Australia was right for them.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38The trip to Australia was amazing.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40It just showed us the life we could have.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42Just the lifestyle in general, wasn't it?

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Just convinced us that that's definitely what we want to do.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48Then, just as they were getting ready to make the move,

0:26:48 > 0:26:50their plans were brought to a standstill.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54We applied when the recession kicked in in the UK.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57We just watched our finances crumble.

0:26:57 > 0:27:02So the budget we wanted to go with, we've just seen disappear.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05We've sort of been on hold for a few months,

0:27:05 > 0:27:08purely because of the financial situation.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11But better news was just around the corner.

0:27:11 > 0:27:12Just out of the blue,

0:27:12 > 0:27:14someone's offered to buy my business,

0:27:14 > 0:27:16which really has given us the golden ticket

0:27:16 > 0:27:17to go to Australia.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20We then approached Christopher and Kirsty,

0:27:20 > 0:27:22and that's when it all kicked off with them,

0:27:22 > 0:27:25and actually finding out their true decisions

0:27:25 > 0:27:27of whether they wanted to go or not.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31Selling the business opened the door to emigrating all over again,

0:27:31 > 0:27:33and despite her original doubts,

0:27:33 > 0:27:37changes in daughter Kirsty's life made moving more realistic.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42I voted undecided because of the boyfriend I was with,

0:27:42 > 0:27:45but as soon as I split up with my boyfriend,

0:27:45 > 0:27:48I was ready to go to Australia straightaway.

0:27:48 > 0:27:50Since then, it's changed, and it was...

0:27:50 > 0:27:53Well, it was my brother that was indecisive,

0:27:53 > 0:27:55because he got a girlfriend...

0:27:55 > 0:27:57and it's just flipped.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59As one relationship ended,

0:27:59 > 0:28:02another had left the Horns in exactly the same position

0:28:02 > 0:28:05they faced in Australia.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08We started seeing each other just before we went to Adelaide.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11I was a bit worried about Mum and Dad

0:28:11 > 0:28:14giving up their lives here, and then leaving Olivia,

0:28:14 > 0:28:16I didn't want to do that.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19The reluctance from Chris had thrown a spanner in the works.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25We all had a long chat,

0:28:25 > 0:28:29just talked about everything, really, to do with the whole move.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32Just... Yeah, it was a long discussion.

0:28:32 > 0:28:34Chris just said he didn't want to go,

0:28:34 > 0:28:36and that was hard for all of us,

0:28:36 > 0:28:39because it's either all of us going out there or none of us.

0:28:39 > 0:28:43If he didn't want to come with us, we just basically wouldn't go.

0:28:46 > 0:28:50It looked as if they were right back at square one, but as it turned out,

0:28:50 > 0:28:54facing their true feelings was exactly what the family needed.

0:28:54 > 0:28:58We came up with the solution of possibly asking Olivia

0:28:58 > 0:29:01and seeing if she wanted to come out with us,

0:29:01 > 0:29:04and that seemed to sort of sway him the other way,

0:29:04 > 0:29:07so then he made the decision that he wanted to come.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10I mean, it's a good quality of life out there.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13It's something that you can only experience once,

0:29:13 > 0:29:15and I'd like to give it a go.

0:29:17 > 0:29:22After a total turnaround, the entire family were finally up for moving.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25All that was holding them back was affording it.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28It is still about the finance.

0:29:28 > 0:29:32Obviously, if the business sells and then the house sells, we can go.

0:29:32 > 0:29:34The crux of the matter was Andy selling his business.

0:29:34 > 0:29:3818 months ago, the work was very slack and the price of the business

0:29:38 > 0:29:39was dipping and dipping.

0:29:39 > 0:29:43But now it's picking up again, I've got this potential buyer.

0:29:43 > 0:29:46So if it all goes well, we're obviously not going

0:29:46 > 0:29:48to get the money we want for the business,

0:29:48 > 0:29:50but it is still an offer

0:29:50 > 0:29:53and it is money that could get us to Australia.

0:29:53 > 0:29:57The potential to sell the business had given the family fresh hope,

0:29:57 > 0:29:59but Andy was still concerned.

0:29:59 > 0:30:00I can't get excited yet.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04You've got to be reserved with your emotions, I think.

0:30:04 > 0:30:08Until you've actually seen the signatures, you've got the finances there

0:30:08 > 0:30:11and you've got the flights all booked,

0:30:11 > 0:30:14then I'll start getting excited.

0:30:14 > 0:30:17With the final piece of the puzzle almost in place,

0:30:17 > 0:30:19Lynn's dreams seem to be closer than ever.

0:30:20 > 0:30:24- We've been waiting for it for about two or three years now.- It's very exciting.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27It is very, very exciting.

0:30:27 > 0:30:28But scary at the same time.

0:30:28 > 0:30:32People think it is really easy, that especially once you've experienced the life

0:30:32 > 0:30:36that there's no comparison, but there is still a lot of ties that are

0:30:36 > 0:30:41pulling us this way even though we've made the decision that we want to go.

0:30:41 > 0:30:44Leaving family and friends, I think, definitely the hardest part.

0:30:44 > 0:30:49Especially for Olivia, cos she's going to be joining my family and

0:30:49 > 0:30:51leaving her whole family really.

0:30:51 > 0:30:55Yeah, it is a huge step, just leaving everything I've known behind.

0:30:56 > 0:31:01But you have to take risks and it is a risk that I'm willing to take, really.

0:31:01 > 0:31:06Australia can provide a great place for my kids to grow up

0:31:06 > 0:31:09and their kids to grow up, whereas here it's...

0:31:09 > 0:31:11Just nothing here for us.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14Even though we've got a lot to leave behind this side...

0:31:15 > 0:31:19..we know we've got a lot more to get the other side of the world.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23In life you've got to grab what you can

0:31:23 > 0:31:25and if that dream's there for us, then go for it.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37With everyone finally on the same page,

0:31:37 > 0:31:41a move to Australia seemed closer than ever for the family but there was

0:31:41 > 0:31:46still some work to be done to secure the dream life they wanted.

0:31:46 > 0:31:51Now five years on it's time to find out what happened next.

0:31:52 > 0:31:56It is May 2016 and the Horns are living in...

0:31:56 > 0:31:57Adelaide, Australia.

0:31:58 > 0:32:01Having emigrated in 2012,

0:32:01 > 0:32:04the family bought and moved into this house in the coastal suburb of

0:32:04 > 0:32:08Seaford Rise, 20 miles south of central Adelaide.

0:32:09 > 0:32:13We use this in the evenings to just relax and watch a bit of telly,

0:32:13 > 0:32:16but we do enjoy watching the view out the window, don't we?

0:32:16 > 0:32:17Yeah, it's a stunning view.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20Watching the sunsets in the evening as well is magic.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23How many photographs have we taken?

0:32:23 > 0:32:25Just a few of the sunset!

0:32:25 > 0:32:27They're finally where they want to be,

0:32:27 > 0:32:31but they had to overcome some major emotional and financial

0:32:31 > 0:32:33stumbling blocks to get here.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36With the move hinging on the sale of Andy's glazing business, he realised

0:32:36 > 0:32:40to get things going he'd have to drastically reduce the price.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44Who wants to buy a business in the middle of a recession?

0:32:44 > 0:32:48So we knocked the price down and then down again, then down again

0:32:48 > 0:32:50and I think we ended up with...

0:32:50 > 0:32:52Not a lot.

0:32:54 > 0:32:58Fortunately, it was still enough to fund the move and the family set

0:32:58 > 0:33:01about planning their return down under.

0:33:01 > 0:33:05But things took an unexpected twist when Lynne received devastating news.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had to have...

0:33:10 > 0:33:13They wouldn't let me fly unless I'd had an operation.

0:33:14 > 0:33:18My first thought was, "But I'm flying to Australia!"

0:33:18 > 0:33:21And the consultant said, "When are you coming back?" And I said, "I'm not, we're emigrating."

0:33:21 > 0:33:24And that's when he said, "You're not flying, Lynn, until we've done it."

0:33:25 > 0:33:30'When you're going through all the emotions of moving to Australia,'

0:33:30 > 0:33:35just literally weeks before you're due to come here you get told that you've got,

0:33:35 > 0:33:38you know, tumours the size of tennis balls...

0:33:38 > 0:33:41That just set all four of us upside down.

0:33:42 > 0:33:47It was a harrowing time for the whole family and, unsurprisingly,

0:33:47 > 0:33:49they found themselves questioning the move.

0:33:50 > 0:33:55We nearly got to the point where we was just going to cancel everything and just stay put.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59And you just don't know what to do when it gets to that stage.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02You know, is it worth then going?

0:34:02 > 0:34:05We only had a year to do it, so it was either go now or not go

0:34:05 > 0:34:07and we just decided to go for it, didn't we?

0:34:07 > 0:34:10Yeah. If we didn't go then, then we wouldn't be here.

0:34:11 > 0:34:14Determined to keep their Australian dream alive,

0:34:14 > 0:34:18the couple postponed their flight to give Lynne time to recover, and

0:34:18 > 0:34:23fortunately, it wasn't long before she had the green light she needed.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25I got the news that everything was OK,

0:34:25 > 0:34:28it came back that it was all borderline, which is good,

0:34:28 > 0:34:30the week after the house had been packed up.

0:34:33 > 0:34:37In the back of my mind, we were going to get here no matter what, whatever happened.

0:34:37 > 0:34:42- There was just a few hurdles that we had to go over to actually make it. - Hurdles?

0:34:42 > 0:34:43THEY LAUGH

0:34:43 > 0:34:44- High jumps.- High jump.

0:34:44 > 0:34:45That's fair enough.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49A matter of weeks later,

0:34:49 > 0:34:53the family were touching down for a new life on the other side of the world.

0:34:56 > 0:35:00I felt like we were coming home when we landed.

0:35:00 > 0:35:04I don't know why, cos I'd only been here once before, but it just felt like home.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07But one person didn't make the journey.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10Chris's former girlfriend Olivia.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13So, the plan was to bring my girlfriend at the time out with us, but the

0:35:13 > 0:35:17relationship broke up just before and she didn't come.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19And we just came out with the four of us.

0:35:20 > 0:35:24The family remember those first few weeks in Australia as a bit of a blur.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29When we finally got to Adelaide you're like, "Relax!"

0:35:29 > 0:35:32You know, but there's still lots to do.

0:35:32 > 0:35:33None of us had jobs.

0:35:33 > 0:35:38We didn't have sort of tax file numbers, bank accounts, nothing like that.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41We soon sort of settled in and started job-hunting,

0:35:41 > 0:35:43house-hunting and all of that.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46So it was busy but, you know,

0:35:46 > 0:35:50I was still recovering from my operation as well, so I couldn't really do too much.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52I think because there was just so much going on I didn't even think

0:35:52 > 0:35:55about the fact that we had left the UK for good.

0:35:58 > 0:36:00Just three weeks after arriving,

0:36:00 > 0:36:03Lynn landed herself a job at a childcare centre.

0:36:03 > 0:36:07For Andy, though, things didn't move so quickly.

0:36:07 > 0:36:10It was bad timing. We got out here when the construction trade was dipping a bit.

0:36:10 > 0:36:14So I spent the first six months here looking for work.

0:36:14 > 0:36:15He just looked every day.

0:36:15 > 0:36:19He just kept going online, looking on all the sites and whatever.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22Going for interviews, applying for jobs until he found one.

0:36:24 > 0:36:26Andy's determination eventually paid off.

0:36:27 > 0:36:29SCRAPING

0:36:29 > 0:36:31Yeah, after six months I phoned these guys up,

0:36:31 > 0:36:35they took me on and three and a half years later I'm still here.

0:36:35 > 0:36:37They are a very big company in Adelaide.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40We do some really big jobs in the city.

0:36:40 > 0:36:44It's a lot of hours, a lot of hard work, but the money's good and,

0:36:44 > 0:36:49you know, if you want a good living, then you don't mind working hard.

0:36:49 > 0:36:50For Chris and Kirsty,

0:36:50 > 0:36:55starting afresh 10,000 miles from where they'd grown up seemed to come naturally.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57The kids settled in really quickly, actually.

0:36:57 > 0:36:59They just seemed to take it in their stride.

0:36:59 > 0:37:01After putting herself through college,

0:37:01 > 0:37:06Kirsty's working as a medical receptionist and now aged 23 she's

0:37:06 > 0:37:09fled the family nest to move in with her fiance.

0:37:09 > 0:37:11I came to Australia and found a Geordie.

0:37:11 > 0:37:15He's lovely. And now we've finally moved out of home,

0:37:15 > 0:37:19which is a huge thing for both of us.

0:37:19 > 0:37:21I can't imagine you in chinos!

0:37:21 > 0:37:22Chinos and a white shirt!

0:37:22 > 0:37:26And we don't live that far either, so it's about a three-minute drive.

0:37:26 > 0:37:27SHE LAUGHS

0:37:27 > 0:37:28So I'm still close.

0:37:28 > 0:37:31She's never been happier, which is just the main thing for us.

0:37:31 > 0:37:35I was quite sad when she moved out, but I actually see her more now that

0:37:35 > 0:37:37she doesn't live here than when she did live here.

0:37:38 > 0:37:42Chris is also in a new relationship and is enjoying his final year as a

0:37:42 > 0:37:45student of international studies.

0:37:45 > 0:37:51I worked for a year and a half before I started university to try and save as much money

0:37:51 > 0:37:53as I could to be able to put myself through it,

0:37:53 > 0:37:56which has been tough, but for the long term I've come out of university

0:37:56 > 0:37:58debt-free, which is great.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00After over two years in her role,

0:38:00 > 0:38:05Lynn fancied a change and is now working as a nursery team leader.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08The job that I have now is everything I wanted it to be.

0:38:08 > 0:38:11It's a bit different from the UK, cos obviously I was term-time there

0:38:11 > 0:38:14and only did about 32 and a half hours a week.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17Here I'm full-time and I do 37 and a half a week.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20Cranberry and apricot muesli bars. No, that doesn't sound...

0:38:20 > 0:38:23'Doing the equivalent in the UK I'd be on about 35 grand,'

0:38:23 > 0:38:27but here I'm on over 50, so it's quite dramatically different.

0:38:29 > 0:38:32New things are on the horizon for Andy too,

0:38:32 > 0:38:36with his dream of opening a mini-golf course back on the cards.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39The couple have put their house on the market in the hope they can

0:38:39 > 0:38:42downsize and release enough money for Andy to set up his business.

0:38:44 > 0:38:47I've actually found a plot of land absolutely perfect for a mini-golf centre,

0:38:47 > 0:38:51cos there's no other mini-golf centre around here.

0:38:51 > 0:38:55To finance that we'll go back to a rental for maybe a couple of years,

0:38:55 > 0:38:59cos the financing in this house will get that business built up.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02The plan is, two or three years' time we should get all that money back

0:39:02 > 0:39:05and then we can start looking at houses again, you know,

0:39:05 > 0:39:07a beautiful house like this.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10I'm hoping by next February that it'll be up and running.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14That'll be a perfect way to end my working life, I think.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17It's the final piece in the puzzle for our dreams.

0:39:18 > 0:39:20With everyone settled and doing well,

0:39:20 > 0:39:25Lynn had all she'd wished for, but during a routine medical checkup she

0:39:25 > 0:39:28was heartbroken to discover the cancer had returned.

0:39:28 > 0:39:33All of a sudden one of my blood tests came back with higher cancer markers,

0:39:33 > 0:39:38and I had to have CT scans, then they found another cyst and they basically told me I'd

0:39:38 > 0:39:39have to have it removed again.

0:39:40 > 0:39:45Having major surgery for the second time has been incredibly difficult,

0:39:45 > 0:39:49but thankfully Lynn's now on the road to recovery.

0:39:49 > 0:39:52I'm about seven weeks post-op now.

0:39:52 > 0:39:54The results all came back borderline again.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58Yeah, I'm just weaning myself back into work now.

0:40:02 > 0:40:04With mum Lynn in better health,

0:40:04 > 0:40:09the family are looking forward to enjoying more of the Australian lifestyle they've fallen for.

0:40:09 > 0:40:12'We're just out every weekend, exploring.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14'There's always something to do.'

0:40:14 > 0:40:18It's an absolutely huge country and there's so much here to see.

0:40:18 > 0:40:22So we've been to Sydney twice now and been to Melbourne twice.

0:40:22 > 0:40:24You know, when we get our next holiday we'll think of another trip,

0:40:24 > 0:40:26we'll probably go to the Gold Coast.

0:40:26 > 0:40:28There's just so much to do in Australia.

0:40:28 > 0:40:33They've also enjoyed hosting family and friends from England over the past four years.

0:40:33 > 0:40:37Since we've been here we've had nine lots of visitors.

0:40:37 > 0:40:38It's been amazing having them here.

0:40:38 > 0:40:42We try and take them to all the places that we like down here, don't we?

0:40:42 > 0:40:45Try and show them the way we live.

0:40:45 > 0:40:46It's been really good.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49The airport runs are horrible when we say goodbye, but there we go.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52- But brilliant when we say hello and they turn up.- Yeah. Exactly.- It's... Yeah.

0:40:54 > 0:40:57Chris and Kirsty have been back to the UK too.

0:40:57 > 0:41:01Most recently Chris took his girlfriend there to show her where he'd grown up.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03We spent three weeks in the UK.

0:41:03 > 0:41:05It was weird to be back,

0:41:05 > 0:41:07cos it felt like I was going home almost.

0:41:07 > 0:41:11But then when we came back here it was weird because I was going home,

0:41:11 > 0:41:13so it's a bit strange.

0:41:13 > 0:41:15I see both as home now.

0:41:17 > 0:41:21For Lynn and Andy there's been no rush to return.

0:41:21 > 0:41:26'We originally decided that we would have five years here before we even thought about going back,'

0:41:26 > 0:41:29just so that we knew we were settled.

0:41:29 > 0:41:33So we haven't gone back yet, but we are thinking, possibly, we've got a family

0:41:33 > 0:41:36wedding next year, so we might be going back for that.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40'Yeah, I think it would be strange going back.'

0:41:40 > 0:41:42But our passion is here in Australia.

0:41:42 > 0:41:44I don't think going back's going to...

0:41:44 > 0:41:46It certainly won't change our minds.

0:41:48 > 0:41:53Ultimately, the whole family are confident down under is where their future lies.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55The children, they are really settled,

0:41:55 > 0:42:00they are really happy in what they're doing and I can see them settling down,

0:42:00 > 0:42:02getting married, having kids of their own

0:42:02 > 0:42:04and living the rest of their days here.

0:42:06 > 0:42:11And it looks like Australia has exceeded everyone's expectations.

0:42:11 > 0:42:14It's all been worth it, cos we just love it here.

0:42:14 > 0:42:15It's beautiful.

0:42:18 > 0:42:20I do still get homesick and I do have days where I really,

0:42:20 > 0:42:26really miss people, but this is our life now and homesick passes.

0:42:28 > 0:42:32And you realise how much better your life is here.

0:42:34 > 0:42:38As a family I think we've made the right decision to move to Australia.

0:42:38 > 0:42:42Yeah, life's been great since we moved here.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45You could say we have settled down perfectly here, all four of us.

0:42:47 > 0:42:49This is the dream. We are living the dream.

0:42:55 > 0:42:58Almost four years into their new life in Adelaide,

0:42:58 > 0:43:04Lynn and Andy are proof that dreams really can come true.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07And with Chris and Kirsty both in new relationships down under,

0:43:07 > 0:43:12it looks like the whole family's future lies firmly in Australia.

0:43:12 > 0:43:17We wish them all continued health and happiness in the country they now call home.
