0:00:02 > 0:00:04Simon MacLean was a man with a mission.

0:00:04 > 0:00:07Going to Australia is the thing I most want to do...in my life.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10For fiancee Jane, that was a big ask.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12He loves me and he wants to be me with forever,

0:00:12 > 0:00:15but it doesn't mean that I HAVE to go.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18A trial week down under proved tempting...

0:00:18 > 0:00:21I have had one of the best days of my life.

0:00:21 > 0:00:22..but when the reality of leaving

0:00:22 > 0:00:26- loved ones brought her back down to earth...- That was awful.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29..Jane was faced with an unbearable choice.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33I am going to break my mum's heart if I come here.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35If I don't come here...

0:00:35 > 0:00:38..I'm potentially stopping Simon living his dream.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41But where are Jane and Simon living now?

0:00:41 > 0:00:46Is it in the UK, or could it be Australia?

0:01:07 > 0:01:11With breathtaking coastlines and a relaxed outdoors lifestyle,

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Australia is a popular destination

0:01:14 > 0:01:16for those looking to start a new life.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19And with more kangaroos than people,

0:01:19 > 0:01:22there is plenty of room for the 34,000 Brits that make the country

0:01:22 > 0:01:24their new home every year.

0:01:26 > 0:01:31Having moved to the UK from Australia almost half a century ago,

0:01:31 > 0:01:35Simon MacLean has spent most of his adult life longing to return to the

0:01:35 > 0:01:37country he once called home.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Now, with his sons from a previous marriage all grown-up,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44he believed the time was right to make the move.

0:01:44 > 0:01:49But first he needed to convince partner Jane to give up everything

0:01:49 > 0:01:51she loved in the UK.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55The journey from the UK to Perth took the couple nearly 9,000 miles

0:01:55 > 0:01:59from home. But, despite spending 20 hours in the air,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01they agreed it was a smooth ride.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03The flight was good.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05I don't particularly like flying,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07and, actually, I quite enjoyed this flight.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Maybe it's because I was looking forward to getting to Australia.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Simon could hardly believe his feet

0:02:12 > 0:02:15were finally back on Australian soil.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18I've been, well, thinking about coming back to Australia ever since

0:02:18 > 0:02:22I was a kid and I just can't wait to see what it is like for real.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26But it was going to take more than nostalgia to win Jane round.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29I have got to put Mum out of my head and Simon out of my head

0:02:29 > 0:02:33and see how I am going to feel about coming here forever.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35She has got to make her own decision.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37I am never going to force her,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40but I am hoping that she will love it enough to want to come.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Things would need to live up to Simon's expectations in the week

0:02:43 > 0:02:45ahead if he was to persuade Jane

0:02:45 > 0:02:48their future lay on the other side of the world.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52When we first met them in 2016,

0:02:52 > 0:02:56Simon MacLean and Jane Fisher lived in Chester, with their dog, Harry.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58They had been together for three years.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01We are just best friends.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05- Yes.- Absolutely best friends. I can tell him anything.

0:03:05 > 0:03:10- Yeah, that's true.- And, you know, I trust him, I love him to bits.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14And even though he is a quirky old devil, I love him so much,

0:03:14 > 0:03:16I really do.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19- Ditto.- You can't just say "ditto"!

0:03:19 > 0:03:21THEY LAUGH

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Having grown up down under,

0:03:23 > 0:03:27mature student Simon had Australian citizenship and was desperate to

0:03:27 > 0:03:30pursue his dream of moving back to the other side of the world.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35I do regret that I didn't go when I was young,

0:03:35 > 0:03:37but life gets in the way.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41I got married, I had children - I don't regret either of those.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43But it did prevent me going to Australia.

0:03:43 > 0:03:48The subject had been a constant thread throughout the couple's relationship.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51I think the pressure started almost immediately when we met.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53You could say, literally, from the first conversation,

0:03:53 > 0:03:57when I put my coffee down, I noticed place mats with Australia.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00And it was like, "Oh, have you been to Australia?"

0:04:00 > 0:04:02And it spiralled from there.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Going to Australia is the thing I most want to do in my life,

0:04:06 > 0:04:10in our lives. But it would be like starting afresh, completely afresh.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12In a new country and a new life,

0:04:12 > 0:04:14and that's something I find very exciting.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Though banker Jane was not opposed to emigrating,

0:04:18 > 0:04:20she hadn't imagined it any time soon.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22I am looking at sort of, ten,

0:04:22 > 0:04:2515 years' time I don't really want to work in Australia.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28I want to lie in the garden and drink gin.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34When Simon popped the question, Jane happily said yes,

0:04:34 > 0:04:37but not necessarily to a life on the other side of the world.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40I actually said to him,

0:04:40 > 0:04:44"You do know this doesn't mean that I'm definitely going to Australia?"

0:04:44 > 0:04:46Cos it doesn't, you know?

0:04:46 > 0:04:48It means that he loves me and he wants to be with me forever,

0:04:48 > 0:04:51but it doesn't mean that I HAVE to go.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55With his children from a previous marriage grown up, for Simon,

0:04:55 > 0:04:57it's now or never.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Yes, I am no spring chicken,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02but I still feel fit enough and young enough to go to another

0:05:02 > 0:05:03country and start again.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07And if I leave it too long, I'll never get there.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11For Jane, though, a move meant breaking close bonds in the UK.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Her best friend Sam was more like a sister.

0:05:14 > 0:05:19I'm a certain age and it's taken me a long time to find my Sam

0:05:19 > 0:05:23and I might never ever be able to have a friend like that again

0:05:23 > 0:05:27because you don't get two Sams in this life, you really don't.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29She's absolutely brilliant.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33And as an only child,

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Jane could barely conceive the idea of leaving her elderly mum.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40She's just my mum, you know, I love her to bits.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45Leaving her forever...I don't know.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49Jane was torn between the people she loved most in her life.

0:05:49 > 0:05:54I really can't imagine my mum potentially saying goodbye to me,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57cos it could, it could be a goodbye.

0:05:57 > 0:06:02And then again, I can't imagine waving Simon off on a plane to start

0:06:02 > 0:06:05a life without me. I..I...

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Which ever way I turn, it is wrong for somebody.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11The week ahead was Simon's long-awaited chance to see if

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Australia really could be his future.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18But did he convince the love of his life to buy into his dream?

0:06:18 > 0:06:20I want Jane to be happy.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22I want us both be happy.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24And I think she will be happy in Australia.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27But there is no getting away from the fact that you're asking somebody

0:06:27 > 0:06:29to give up an awful lot.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33I am really looking forward to getting out there and seeing if it can be my dream.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36It's just...can I do it?

0:06:36 > 0:06:40- When push comes to shove, can I do it?- Yeah.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49Simon and Jane spent their trial week in Perth,

0:06:49 > 0:06:52capital of Western Australia, and Simon's boyhood home.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57This two-bedroom house in Rockingham was their base for the week,

0:06:57 > 0:07:00and as they arrived, Simon was already feeling at ease.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05Ah...my Aussie home.

0:07:05 > 0:07:06Ladies first.

0:07:08 > 0:07:09Wow.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11- Bigger than you thought?- Yeah.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13I thought it was going to be really small.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17As the couple explored further, Jane's first impression proved true.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20- This is quite small.- I would not want to buy something like this,

0:07:20 > 0:07:22- it is too small.- Yeah, too small.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26It wasn't the kind of property to make Jane move half a world away.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28I don't think I'd be rushing to

0:07:28 > 0:07:31leave my little cottage to move into this.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34No, no, I agree.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36A nice place to stay for the week, though.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Good place to stay for the week.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46Back in the UK, the couple lived in Jane's two-bedroom bungalow

0:07:46 > 0:07:49in the village of Clutton, just outside Chester.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52- I love my little house to bits. - It's gorgeous.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55It is, yes, small, but it is cosy small.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59But I would love a place that is our house.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01- That we buy together. - We buy together and choose together.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03Yeah, I understand that.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06If they moved, their budget for a home down under was £300,000,

0:08:06 > 0:08:09and they knew exactly what they wanted.

0:08:09 > 0:08:14Modern, open-plan, we like that sort of inside-outside sort of living.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18Yeah, I would like something... I would like a decent-sized garden.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23Finding that perfect home in Australia was crucial if Simon was

0:08:23 > 0:08:25to get Jane on board.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28To give the couple an idea of what was available in Perth,

0:08:28 > 0:08:30we arranged for them to view three properties -

0:08:30 > 0:08:32two close to their budget,

0:08:32 > 0:08:35and a third which should have been everything they were looking for

0:08:35 > 0:08:37in a dream home.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40The search began in the suburb of Waikiki,

0:08:40 > 0:08:4230 miles south of Perth city.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45Did this modern three-bedroom home hit the mark?

0:08:45 > 0:08:47- Wow.- That looks stunning.- Wow!

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Oh, wow.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52OK, we'll take it.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54Simon thought so.

0:08:54 > 0:08:55Ooh.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59- Oh, now you're talking! - Oh, my goodness.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01- Look at that view.- Oh, my God!

0:09:03 > 0:09:06- Open-plan.- Oh, wow.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09And Jane was dumbstruck.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12I...It's not often this happens, there are no words coming out.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14- Would this do?- Yeah.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Things were off to a good start.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19- Going...- Ooh!

0:09:21 > 0:09:25Think of the teddies I could get in here. Ah, wow.

0:09:25 > 0:09:26Ah, walk-in robe!

0:09:26 > 0:09:29And though the en-suite had a drawback...

0:09:29 > 0:09:31- Only one sink.- Only one sink.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33..the family bathroom made up for it.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36- I like the shower head. - Oh, I like the shower.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38- That is nice, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Nice.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45And outside didn't disappoint either.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47Ah, love it!

0:09:47 > 0:09:49Oh, Simon.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- Look at that.- It is a great entertaining space, isn't it?

0:09:53 > 0:09:56The pair seemed tickled pink with this property,

0:09:56 > 0:10:01- but with a budget of £300,000, would the price be a hit or a miss? - Bull!

0:10:01 > 0:10:04- So, what do you think? - 325, I reckon.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07- I'm going to go 275.- Really? Yes.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09- Do you want to turn it over?- No.

0:10:09 > 0:10:10THEY LAUGH

0:10:10 > 0:10:13- Go on, then.- No, you do it. - No, you do it. Ladies first.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15Ooh, all right, then.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21SHE GASPS

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Wow. 298,971.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26Nearly bang on the money.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30Being affordable, Jane was almost moved to tears.

0:10:30 > 0:10:35- I can't believe we could... Oh, wow.- We could live here.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38Oh, my goodness. Wow.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Oh, let's just... Come on, let's just have it.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46Simon's day couldn't have started any better,

0:10:46 > 0:10:49and there was still two more properties to view.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51The next was in Warnbro, a popular

0:10:51 > 0:10:54suburb 40 miles south of central Perth.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58Did this three-bedroom property impress as much as the first?

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- I'm scared.- I think we're going to have a view.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03Ah, we're going to have a view.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06We are going to have a view.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09Simon was so smitten, he had forgotten to stop.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- Have we just driven past it? Yes. - TYRES SCREECH

0:11:12 > 0:11:15After a quick U-turn, it was time to look inside.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18- Oh, right, straight in. - Straight in.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23- OK.- First impression, nowhere near as nice.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25- Not as nice, yeah, I agree. - Nowhere near as nice.

0:11:25 > 0:11:26And the kitchen?

0:11:26 > 0:11:28- The kitchen area.- Open-plan.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32- This one hasn't got about a wow factor for me.- No.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Nor did the outside.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36- Here we go.- Oh, it's small.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- Oh, sorry.- Oh, no. - Totally overlooked.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41- Overlooked, yeah.- Oh, no.

0:11:41 > 0:11:46But things took on a more positive vibe in the main bedroom.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Ah, now, this is nice.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50I like this.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52- Ah!- En suite.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54A bit cramped.

0:11:54 > 0:11:55Though not for long.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59No, I'm afraid it is still not...

0:11:59 > 0:12:00- Not selling itself.- No.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04This property fell far short of the first one,

0:12:04 > 0:12:07but if the price was below their £300,000 budget,

0:12:07 > 0:12:09would it change their minds?

0:12:10 > 0:12:13OK. I am going to say 250.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16I'm going to have to agree with you. I think about 250.

0:12:17 > 0:12:18- Ready?- Come on then.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27- No way!- You are kidding me!

0:12:27 > 0:12:29Ha-ha! No.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33£287,566.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36- No.- I am working on the principle

0:12:36 > 0:12:40we've been shown a lovely one, a not-so-nice one, and now...

0:12:40 > 0:12:43- The mansion is next.- The mansion is next.- The mansion is next, yeah.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46The last property was in Baldivis,

0:12:46 > 0:12:50a semi-rural suburb with plenty of amenities for modern living.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54But did this stylish four-bedroom house become Jane's dream property?

0:12:57 > 0:12:58Oh, hello.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02Ooh, now you're talking.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04That would be a yes, then.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06Oh, wow.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09I thought I loved the other one until I saw this.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11Oh, wow!

0:13:11 > 0:13:14Sounded like things were back on track.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16Oh, this is lovely.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18Now, entertaining.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21Yeah. This is what we were talking about, isn't it?

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Beautifully modern, beautifully open-plan and it is just what we want.

0:13:24 > 0:13:25It is, yeah.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28And the cinema room was also a hit.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30Ah, a theatre room!

0:13:33 > 0:13:36Jane was lost for words again in the main bedroom.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Here we go, here we go. Here we go.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Wow.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Oh, look at the...

0:13:46 > 0:13:48- Wow.- Look at the floor.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51Look at the floor. Oh, my goodness.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53- WHISPERS:- What's round the corner? - I don't know.

0:13:53 > 0:13:54- Why are we whispering?- I don't know.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56I don't know. Awed silence, I think is...

0:13:56 > 0:13:58It is like being in a church.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Look.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01SHE GASPS

0:14:01 > 0:14:05Oh, it gets better. This is just amazing.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07This is like a film star's house.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- And his and hers sinks.- Yeah.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17So, would you move to Australia for a house like this?

0:14:17 > 0:14:20- Yes.- You would.- I would.- Good girl.

0:14:20 > 0:14:25Simon's work was done, but with their £300,000 budget,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27could they afford this property?

0:14:29 > 0:14:31Here we go again.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36I am going to say this is £365,000.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38OK. I think it might surprise you.

0:14:38 > 0:14:39I am going to say 325.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43What, you think it is only 25,000 over budget? Really?

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Shall we turn this one together?

0:14:46 > 0:14:47- Yeah.- Yay.- Yeah.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49Go on, then.

0:14:52 > 0:14:54- Ready?- Go for it.- And...

0:14:57 > 0:14:59- SHE GASPS - There you go.

0:14:59 > 0:15:00Wow.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03323,433.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05433.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08It was £23,000 over budget...

0:15:08 > 0:15:11- Wow.- ..but a lot less than Jane was expecting.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14That makes it a bit more tempting, doesn't it, for you?

0:15:14 > 0:15:15It does. Yeah, it does.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19It is sort of like dangling the carrot a little bit.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22Simon's battle to persuade Jane to make the move down under

0:15:22 > 0:15:24was off to a decent start.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27Property one's location had them both swayed

0:15:27 > 0:15:29and was well within the couple's budget.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32They had a very different point of view about the second property,

0:15:32 > 0:15:34though, and the price shocked.

0:15:34 > 0:15:39Finally, house number three was the dream home, and though over budget,

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Jane felt she could be tempted.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44So when it came to houses in Australia,

0:15:44 > 0:15:47did they vote home or away?

0:15:47 > 0:15:51Based on the properties we have seen today, our vote goes to...

0:15:57 > 0:15:59- BOTH:- Australia!

0:15:59 > 0:16:02You know, those properties that we saw today were amazing.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06I'd be mad to vote anything but Australia.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08Well done. Right decision.

0:16:10 > 0:16:11Sorry, Mum!

0:16:15 > 0:16:19Jane's first vote for Australia meant Simon's dream was a step closer.

0:16:19 > 0:16:23But affording the Australian lifestyle depended on the couple

0:16:23 > 0:16:25securing the right jobs down under.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28Back in 2016,

0:16:28 > 0:16:31Simon was an ex-fireman, studying fire safety engineering

0:16:31 > 0:16:34with a view to launching a new career.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36I would like to feel I can earn

0:16:36 > 0:16:40a salary of around about 50,000 sterling.

0:16:40 > 0:16:44Whether I walk into that sort of job on day one, I don't know.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47Jane worked in a bank, where she was part of a bereavement team.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50What I do is when somebody passes away,

0:16:50 > 0:16:53I help the next of kin and executors

0:16:53 > 0:16:58deal with their estates and sort out their finances.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01Unsure if a similar role existed down under,

0:17:01 > 0:17:03Jane did consider retraining, but...

0:17:03 > 0:17:06If I can't get a salary, that I'm expecting and if Simon

0:17:06 > 0:17:10can't get the salary that he's expecting, the move's off.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13The last thing I want to do is travel all the way across

0:17:13 > 0:17:15the other side of the world to struggle.

0:17:17 > 0:17:22Simon's dream of a fresh start hinged on their work experience day.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24He met with expat Andy,

0:17:24 > 0:17:27who had been in the fire safety industry since arriving

0:17:27 > 0:17:29over 26 years ago.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33Straightaway, Simon was keen to know if there was plenty of work.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35It is steady.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37In our business now, we have taken on a new person

0:17:37 > 0:17:40just to do the auditing, it's that big and much of a job.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43- Are there opportunities for people like me?- Certainly.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47I mean, not only in the consultancy side.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49the fire engineering is part of

0:17:49 > 0:17:52near enough every building that we tender now, so yes,

0:17:52 > 0:17:54opportunities there, definitely.

0:17:54 > 0:17:59And was his time spent studying fire safety engineering worth it?

0:17:59 > 0:18:02Do those sort of qualifications work in Australia for me?

0:18:02 > 0:18:04Yes, certainly they would.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07That was great news, and what about the money?

0:18:07 > 0:18:10Between 90,000 and 100,000.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13So, £45,000 to £50,000.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16And the more you go up the management scale,

0:18:16 > 0:18:21you could be anywhere up to 140,000, maybe £70,000.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24Fantastic. Andy, thank you very much,

0:18:24 > 0:18:26really appreciate that useful information.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28No problem and good luck.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30It was a positive morning for Simon.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33This is the area I want to concentrate on, it is the degree

0:18:33 > 0:18:36I've done, and I am excited about the potential of working

0:18:36 > 0:18:38in Australia, doing what I love doing.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42Across town, Jane visited a local recruitment agency who specialised

0:18:42 > 0:18:44in the financial sector.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46She was met by Chris.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48- Hi, Jane.- Hi.- How you going? - Nice to meet you.- Nice to meet you.

0:18:48 > 0:18:49- Come through.- OK.

0:18:49 > 0:18:54Jane was keen to know if her role as a bereavement specialist could transfer to Australia.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58I made some enquiries and the bereavement role,

0:18:58 > 0:19:03if it exists at all, it would be in head offices in Sydney or Melbourne.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06That was disappointing news for Jane, and there was worse to come.

0:19:06 > 0:19:11At the moment, the staff numbers within branches isn't a high area

0:19:11 > 0:19:13of need in terms of recruitment.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17I think you are telling me it would be hard for you to find me a job?

0:19:17 > 0:19:20Uh, look, it just depends how flexible you are

0:19:20 > 0:19:22in your seeking of a job.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25It looks like a Jane would have to take a step back in Australia,

0:19:25 > 0:19:27but if the money was right...

0:19:27 > 0:19:29What would the salary be?

0:19:29 > 0:19:31I think the salary for those lower-level customer service

0:19:31 > 0:19:34positions would be around 60 to 80,000,

0:19:34 > 0:19:37- or 30 to 40,000 in pounds.- Really?

0:19:37 > 0:19:40That was almost double what Jane earned in the UK

0:19:40 > 0:19:43and that was just the starting salary.

0:19:43 > 0:19:48I think there would be opportunities to grow from there by demonstrating

0:19:48 > 0:19:51your experience once in the role, being able to incorporate the skills

0:19:51 > 0:19:54you did learn in the bereavement process.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57So whilst the news for Jane wasn't all bad,

0:19:57 > 0:19:59was it good enough for a vote to move down under?

0:20:01 > 0:20:04Today, we have been having job interviews and now

0:20:04 > 0:20:07we're going to decide - is it England or Australia?

0:20:21 > 0:20:22- Australia!- UK!

0:20:24 > 0:20:26- Sorry.- I'm not too surprised.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29- I'm sorry, but... - I'm not too surprised.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32It just... It's not going to be as easy as I thought.

0:20:32 > 0:20:37Right now, I feel I'd be absolutely stupid to leave a job that I love

0:20:37 > 0:20:40and I'm secure in for... Well, for nothing.

0:20:40 > 0:20:41It had to be Australia for me.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43You'll just have to keep me.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45I will. I'll keep you.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55With Jane voting for the UK, Simon had his work cut out.

0:20:55 > 0:21:00So would a day tasting the lifestyle of Australia help his cause?

0:21:00 > 0:21:03We sent the couple on a trip to Caversham Wildlife Park.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05Hello, baby! He's loving that.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09Is he...? Is he...? Eh!

0:21:09 > 0:21:12- Ah!- Everybody needs a break.- Yeah.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15Jane was in her element

0:21:15 > 0:21:18and Karen the koala rekindled fond memories for her.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21I've wanted to do this since I was tiny.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24My dad used to tell me about koalas.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26Not that he knew anything about koalas,

0:21:26 > 0:21:29but when you're a little girl you believe everything, don't you?

0:21:29 > 0:21:31Worth moving to Australia for this, then?

0:21:31 > 0:21:34- You just never miss an opportunity! - Never!

0:21:36 > 0:21:39That is the best thing I've ever done, I think.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42That was absolutely unbelievable.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45It was what Simon wanted to hear.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48Next was a visit to one of Australia's oldest wineries.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52- Would you like a wine taste today? - Yes, please.- Yeah.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54So, this is the Chardonnay Pinot Noir.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57There's water there, if you need, and also a spittoon.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59- I won't be needing that.- Cheers. - Cheers.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05I could drink that forever.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07But it wasn't all rose-tinted glasses.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10I have to remember that, yes, this is amazing,

0:22:10 > 0:22:13this is wonderful, but I can't do this every day.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17I have to get a job so I can have the dream house that I want.

0:22:17 > 0:22:18So it's a circle.

0:22:18 > 0:22:22And at the minute, there's a little bit of the circle missing for me.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25But when it came to voting for lifestyle in Australia,

0:22:25 > 0:22:26what was the verdict.

0:22:26 > 0:22:30Based on our lifestyle day, we are going to choose...

0:22:35 > 0:22:37- BOTH:- Australia!

0:22:39 > 0:22:42I have had one of the best days of my life.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45I got to tick boxes I never thought I would tick.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48I loved every single minute of it.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50I couldn't go any other way.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53- What a perfect day.- It was great. - What a perfect day.- Yeah.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01It was a significant moment for Jane and it looked like

0:23:01 > 0:23:04she was coming round to Simon's dream.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06But could they afford to live down under?

0:23:07 > 0:23:11We provided a comparison of costs in Australia and the UK.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14First up was the groceries.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17Tomatoes... What's going on with this?!

0:23:17 > 0:23:19- 99p...- To 2.06.- Yeah.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21So it's £1.07 more expensive.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23They just want us to be fat.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27Minus 73.52 equals...

0:23:27 > 0:23:30£17.09...

0:23:30 > 0:23:34- That's not actually...- ..a week. - ..as bad as I thought.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37The extra £74 per month on food didn't faze the couple,

0:23:37 > 0:23:40but what about the bigger outgoings?

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Basing the sums on the first property,

0:23:42 > 0:23:46they realised their monthly mortgage increased by over a third.

0:23:46 > 0:23:51£142.59 more expensive in Oz.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53Electricity...

0:23:54 > 0:23:58- Cheaper.- That's a shock. - Minus seven.- That is a shock.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00You thought it would be more expensive?

0:24:00 > 0:24:02I thought it was going to be double.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03On the bigger outgoings,

0:24:03 > 0:24:07they would spend more than £250 extra per month in Australia.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10That's over £3,000 every year.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12Aw, unhappy face.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17It was disappointing but,

0:24:17 > 0:24:21as a student, Simon didn't have an income in the UK.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25So factoring in his wage in Australia and Jane's potential

0:24:25 > 0:24:28increase in earnings, the couple discovered they could actually be

0:24:28 > 0:24:31much better off in Oz.

0:24:31 > 0:24:37£31,461.24...

0:24:39 > 0:24:43..per year better off in Australia.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45You can fly home as often as you want.

0:24:47 > 0:24:48Chuffed?

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Is this right? Is this...?

0:24:51 > 0:24:52- Wow.- That's right.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55No prizes for guessing how this vote turned out.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00- BOTH:- Australia! Yay!

0:25:00 > 0:25:02- It couldn't be anything else, really, could it?- No.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07With Jane's third vote for Australia,

0:25:07 > 0:25:11Simon's half-century dream was tantalisingly close.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14But the DVD from family and friends

0:25:14 > 0:25:16had the potential of changing all that.

0:25:16 > 0:25:21Hello, darling. I hope everything is just as you dreamed it would be.

0:25:21 > 0:25:22Hi, Dad. Hi, Jane.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26- Hi, Simon. Hi, Jane.- I hope you're having a lovely, lovely time.

0:25:26 > 0:25:27Hi, guys!

0:25:27 > 0:25:30Jane and Simon are a perfect match.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34They're opposites to each other, in my opinion.

0:25:34 > 0:25:39um, Simon calms Jane down a lot

0:25:39 > 0:25:43cos Jane is very full-on, shall we say?

0:25:43 > 0:25:45I'll kill her!

0:25:45 > 0:25:47I think Simon can be a little bit shy at times, a little bit

0:25:47 > 0:25:53quiet, and Jane counteracts that because she's very, very gregarious.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56She's always right.

0:25:56 > 0:26:00When we have arguments and what have you, she always is right.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03- They bounce off each other well. - Yeah, good banter.

0:26:03 > 0:26:04They've got a similar sense of humour.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06They've got similar interests.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08His politics, to my mind,

0:26:08 > 0:26:10is sometimes a little bit dubious, but...

0:26:12 > 0:26:13Oh, I love her!

0:26:13 > 0:26:17She takes me shopping because I'm housebound otherwise.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19So she does that and that's wonderful.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22For six, seven years or so he's wanted to go to Australia.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25It's no surprise to me. It's been a long time coming.

0:26:25 > 0:26:27I think Jane's going to have a struggle because of her mum,

0:26:27 > 0:26:31who she's very, very close to and of course Simon is leaving the boys

0:26:31 > 0:26:34behind, Daniel and Connor, and that's going to be very hard.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37I don't want my dad to feel like he can't do what he wants to do

0:26:37 > 0:26:40because of, sort of, me and my little brother.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43I will miss him. Of course, I'll miss him.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45Um, I think with regards to her mum,

0:26:45 > 0:26:49that's a huge wrench and is going to be a big influence on whether or not

0:26:49 > 0:26:51they actually decide to go or not.

0:26:51 > 0:26:55It's a big shock because I'm all of a sudden going to be all on my own...

0:26:57 > 0:27:02..without any hopes at all of ever going to see them.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06So we will just pray that while I'm still here,

0:27:06 > 0:27:09they'll be able to come and see me again.

0:27:09 > 0:27:10We will. We will.

0:27:12 > 0:27:17It will be like losing a limb if they do go because she is just...

0:27:17 > 0:27:19She is just part of me.

0:27:19 > 0:27:21She is...my life.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26I'm 83 and I've had a wonderful life so it's only fair

0:27:26 > 0:27:30- that she should follow her dream, too.- Bless her.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32I'd much rather they came home,

0:27:32 > 0:27:35but that's probably not going to happen.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38The last thing you want is to wake up in 20 years' time and think,

0:27:38 > 0:27:39"Damn, I wish I'd done it then."

0:27:39 > 0:27:42- Yes.- You go for it, mate. You've got our blessing.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45We really don't want you to go cos we're going to miss you,

0:27:45 > 0:27:49but be happy and make the right decision for you.

0:27:49 > 0:27:50We'll miss you. Um...

0:27:52 > 0:27:55But, hey, that's life. Go for it.

0:27:55 > 0:27:56Thank you.

0:27:56 > 0:28:00I am behind you 100% in whatever decision you do make,

0:28:00 > 0:28:04but you do know that I love you so much and I'm going to miss you

0:28:04 > 0:28:07like crazy if you decide to go to Australia.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10Please, please, please just do whatever makes you guys happy.

0:28:10 > 0:28:11You've wanted to do it for ages.

0:28:11 > 0:28:12I love you both loads.

0:28:12 > 0:28:14Be very sure, dear.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17Be very, very sure.

0:28:17 > 0:28:21And I don't really want you to go, you know that.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25I'll miss her.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28My mum.

0:28:31 > 0:28:35- Oh, God.- Was it as hard as you expected or harder?- It was worse!

0:28:35 > 0:28:36Worse.

0:28:36 > 0:28:41I just want a magic button that I can press and everybody comes, too.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44- They all come with us? - Hm, it would be nice, wouldn't it?

0:28:46 > 0:28:48The prospect of leaving family

0:28:48 > 0:28:51and friends had always been a stumbling block for Jane,

0:28:51 > 0:28:54and in spite of her previous votes for Australia,

0:28:54 > 0:28:58Simon was no longer sure what way her final card would turn.

0:28:59 > 0:29:01Yesterday I'd have put money on it.

0:29:01 > 0:29:02Today, not so certain.

0:29:03 > 0:29:05And I understand why.

0:29:07 > 0:29:08HE SIGHS

0:29:08 > 0:29:11I know time is ticking and, you know, but...

0:29:11 > 0:29:16..um, there's just so much whizzing round my head at the minute.

0:29:16 > 0:29:19It's a 50-50. I really don't know.

0:29:20 > 0:29:21I really don't know.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25I'm not coming out to Australia without her, so it'll be the UK.

0:29:25 > 0:29:26We stay in the UK.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29Whichever decision I make,

0:29:29 > 0:29:31I'm going to stick with it.

0:29:32 > 0:29:36It was a make or break week for Simon and his dream rested on

0:29:36 > 0:29:38the final turn of the cards.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41It's been a big week. We've had a lot of fun,

0:29:41 > 0:29:43but now we need to vote on where we're going to live.

0:29:59 > 0:30:00- BOTH:- Australia!

0:30:06 > 0:30:07I love you.

0:30:08 > 0:30:13I just thought, "Where do you want to be when you grow older?"

0:30:14 > 0:30:18And...I want to be here. I want to do this.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21I'm going to break my mum and Sam's hearts.

0:30:23 > 0:30:27But it was always going to hurt somebody and I did it for me.

0:30:27 > 0:30:29I'm relieved. I'm delighted.

0:30:29 > 0:30:31And, gosh, I love you so much.

0:30:38 > 0:30:43It may have been touch-and-go right to the final turn of the cards,

0:30:43 > 0:30:46but having witnessed everything Australia could offer,

0:30:46 > 0:30:49Jane was ready to take the plunge

0:30:49 > 0:30:52and make Simon's dream of returning to the land he left

0:30:52 > 0:30:56almost 50 years ago finally come true.

0:30:56 > 0:31:01But now, 12 months later, are they living at home or away?

0:31:02 > 0:31:06It's 2017 and the couple are living in...

0:31:06 > 0:31:08..Chester with dog Harry.

0:31:08 > 0:31:09But not for long.

0:31:09 > 0:31:12Following the success of the trial week,

0:31:12 > 0:31:15bags and suitcases are literally being packed.

0:31:15 > 0:31:19Our trial week in Australia was a fascinating experience.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21Not something we'd ever done before, obviously,

0:31:21 > 0:31:24being followed around by a film crew.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27But by the end of the week I think we'd both become luvvies.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

0:31:30 > 0:31:33But also, we got to see Australia.

0:31:33 > 0:31:36I liked Australia from the get-go

0:31:36 > 0:31:39and I was just hoping that Jane would like it as much as I did.

0:31:39 > 0:31:44I think what I saw was really what I had in mind because I wanted it

0:31:44 > 0:31:47to be sunny and I wanted it to be, you know,

0:31:47 > 0:31:51lovely open spaces and large houses, and that's really what it was.

0:31:51 > 0:31:55It made me realise that, yes, that's where I want to live.

0:31:55 > 0:32:00And I was so pleased, so delighted, that Jane enjoyed it as well.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03Whilst there, Jane was in constant

0:32:03 > 0:32:05contact her best friend Sam in the UK.

0:32:05 > 0:32:08They had an amazing time, amazing time.

0:32:08 > 0:32:09You know...

0:32:10 > 0:32:13..the lifestyle, they just...

0:32:13 > 0:32:16It was all they expected it to be and more, I think.

0:32:16 > 0:32:20And I knew then, in my heart of hearts, what her answer

0:32:20 > 0:32:23was going to be, that she was going to go.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26Everything was perfect apart from the jobs.

0:32:26 > 0:32:30So on the final vote I had to think about all of that.

0:32:30 > 0:32:32It wasn't a case of, "Oh, what are you going to do?"

0:32:32 > 0:32:33And dithering about, I had to think,

0:32:33 > 0:32:35"Right, what have you seen in the week?

0:32:35 > 0:32:37"Has it been positive, has it been negative?"

0:32:37 > 0:32:42All positive. So that's why I went with my vote for Australia,

0:32:42 > 0:32:45more than anything because it was perfect for me.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48When she turned over the card and it said Australia,

0:32:48 > 0:32:50I knew mine was Australia,

0:32:50 > 0:32:53ah, the feeling was fantastic.

0:32:53 > 0:32:57I just wanted to hug her and give her a big kiss and run off

0:32:57 > 0:33:00into the sunset and plan the journey to Australia.

0:33:00 > 0:33:03So it was a fantastic feeling.

0:33:03 > 0:33:04Jane and Simon spent another week

0:33:04 > 0:33:08on holiday down under before returning to Chester.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11It got to the end of the two weeks and we had to leave Australia,

0:33:11 > 0:33:14and it was quite hard to do, actually.

0:33:14 > 0:33:18I would've quite happily missed that plane and just stayed there

0:33:18 > 0:33:21on the chance of finding something and doing something,

0:33:21 > 0:33:25but practicalities get in the way and you have to go home.

0:33:25 > 0:33:27But I really missed it, and we got back to the UK,

0:33:27 > 0:33:30it was fun for a short while telling everyone about it,

0:33:30 > 0:33:32but almost straightaway I was thinking, "Come on,

0:33:32 > 0:33:36"we've got to get things moving and we need to be out there."

0:33:36 > 0:33:40If someone had said to me, "Jane, you can just stay,"

0:33:40 > 0:33:42I would have said, "Yes!"

0:33:42 > 0:33:45But... The "but" again!

0:33:45 > 0:33:47Obviously, it's not all about me.

0:33:47 > 0:33:52You know, I've got think about Mum because I can't leave Mum without

0:33:52 > 0:33:56a secure environment for her, somewhere that I know she's safe,

0:33:56 > 0:33:58because I wouldn't settle.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00I'd be constantly worried about my mum.

0:34:00 > 0:34:05I more-or-less knew straightaway that they were very serious about

0:34:05 > 0:34:09wanting to go and they've never differed from that idea.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12They've wanted to go ever since they came home.

0:34:12 > 0:34:15So that's nice that they're going back.

0:34:15 > 0:34:18Jane began the search for an assisted-living apartment

0:34:18 > 0:34:22for her mother where she would feel comfortable and secure.

0:34:22 > 0:34:27Out of the blue one of my colleagues said to me that she knew of this

0:34:27 > 0:34:31new assisted-living apartment that was open.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33So I thought, "Right, well, I'll go and have a look."

0:34:33 > 0:34:36Because I didn't want to take Mum somewhere that wasn't right.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38I wanted to go and get a feel for something.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42So I went off on my own and went into this place and straightaway

0:34:42 > 0:34:46I was like, "Yeah, this is what I was hoping for."

0:34:46 > 0:34:50So we got home and worked out the figures and I sort of said,

0:34:50 > 0:34:52"Well, Mum, it's doable, we can do it."

0:34:52 > 0:34:56So she joked and said that she would love the penthouse,

0:34:56 > 0:34:58cos there's a beautiful penthouse at the top,

0:34:58 > 0:35:01and she joked and she said to the manager, "Oh, I'd love that."

0:35:01 > 0:35:03And, you know, we all just giggled about it.

0:35:03 > 0:35:08And then it was a matter of months, two, three months after,

0:35:08 > 0:35:11we got a phone call to say that the penthouse was available...

0:35:11 > 0:35:13- "Would your mum like it?" - We couldn't believe it, could we?

0:35:13 > 0:35:16- No.- We couldn't believe it. That moved quite quickly, actually.

0:35:16 > 0:35:20Very, very soon after that I came to live here.

0:35:20 > 0:35:24And I feel that my life is here now.

0:35:24 > 0:35:29And...I'm going to talk to them.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31You see, years ago I couldn't have

0:35:31 > 0:35:34talked to Jane and looked at her face.

0:35:34 > 0:35:38And that's going to make it so much easier, having them Skype me.

0:35:38 > 0:35:42There will always be somebody for a very long time with me,

0:35:42 > 0:35:46doing it with me, so that doesn't scare me at all now.

0:35:48 > 0:35:50With Jane's mum Meg settled,

0:35:50 > 0:35:53Simon began to put plans into action to get them back to Australia

0:35:53 > 0:35:55as soon as possible.

0:35:55 > 0:35:57I knew that I could go to Australia.

0:35:57 > 0:36:00What was less certain, of course, is Jane.

0:36:00 > 0:36:04We assumed because we're a couple that it would be fairly

0:36:04 > 0:36:07straightforward, but once we started doing the investigation,

0:36:07 > 0:36:08I think quite rightly,

0:36:08 > 0:36:12Australia makes sure that it's not just a marriage of convenience.

0:36:12 > 0:36:16They want to make sure you are a couple in a genuine relationship.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19It was nowhere near as easy as I thought it was going to be.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22Um, we didn't have enough information,

0:36:22 > 0:36:24we didn't have enough documents for them.

0:36:24 > 0:36:27So we went through this quite intense process of trying to pull

0:36:27 > 0:36:31together all of that information to prove we are a couple.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33We know we're a couple, we know we love each other,

0:36:33 > 0:36:36but trying to prove that to other people is not always

0:36:36 > 0:36:38as straightforward and easy as you think it might be.

0:36:38 > 0:36:41Particularly when you're trying to explain it to a stranger

0:36:41 > 0:36:43who's located on the other side of the world.

0:36:43 > 0:36:47So the application went in in April this year

0:36:47 > 0:36:51and, worst case scenario, and this is worst case scenario,

0:36:51 > 0:36:55it can be up to 16 months for me to get a visa.

0:36:55 > 0:36:58Along with the potential wait of nearly a year and a half for Jane

0:36:58 > 0:37:00to get a visa, something else

0:37:00 > 0:37:03unexpected threatened to block their path down under.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07Partly because I'm not as young as Jane,

0:37:07 > 0:37:11you have to work in Australia for a minimum of ten years to qualify

0:37:11 > 0:37:14for a pension, so I need to get going,

0:37:14 > 0:37:16otherwise I'm going to be working into my 80s.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19When we started to look into things like pensions,

0:37:19 > 0:37:22we realised that time wasn't on our side.

0:37:22 > 0:37:27So it was either we risk waiting for my visa to come through

0:37:27 > 0:37:32and then we go together, which could be 16 months...

0:37:32 > 0:37:36So I wanted to get out there, I wanted to get things going.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38The other thing is, I'd finished my degree.

0:37:38 > 0:37:43I want to start doing something new, I want a new career.

0:37:43 > 0:37:45I don't want to start it in the UK

0:37:45 > 0:37:48and then stop it and start again in Australia.

0:37:48 > 0:37:50And when we looked at it on paper,

0:37:50 > 0:37:54it made sense for Simon to go and set our life up for us.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56Because he has the Australian citizenship,

0:37:56 > 0:37:58there's no worry about a visa.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00Simon could go tomorrow, it doesn't matter.

0:38:00 > 0:38:02So he said, "Well, I'll go out,

0:38:02 > 0:38:06"set the business up or get a job and get our life ready for us,

0:38:06 > 0:38:08"if you like, to go over."

0:38:08 > 0:38:11So we just pushed things along by Simon going first.

0:38:11 > 0:38:15And Simon... Simon! Harry and I will follow soon after, hopefully.

0:38:15 > 0:38:18I feel like one of those Wild West pioneers.

0:38:18 > 0:38:21I'm blazing the trail so that my darling can come out and have

0:38:21 > 0:38:24a comfortable life drinking gin in the back garden.

0:38:24 > 0:38:25SHE LAUGHS

0:38:27 > 0:38:31But while Simon's frontiersman spirit is courageous,

0:38:31 > 0:38:32Jane is worried about work

0:38:32 > 0:38:35and how that could affect their future together.

0:38:37 > 0:38:39Simon is going to be sponsoring me,

0:38:39 > 0:38:43that's how I'm going to get my visa, Simon is my sponsor.

0:38:43 > 0:38:46And if he doesn't get a job, then he can't sponsor me.

0:38:46 > 0:38:48And if Simon doesn't get a job,

0:38:48 > 0:38:52I very much doubt I'll ever get out there, and that's reality.

0:38:52 > 0:38:56Also, because Jane's visa for Australia would be sponsored,

0:38:56 > 0:38:58she wouldn't be allowed to work in a bank,

0:38:58 > 0:39:03as she has for the last two decades in the UK, for at least two years.

0:39:04 > 0:39:07So she would be totally reliant upon Simon getting a job.

0:39:07 > 0:39:11But there might be a spanner in the works.

0:39:11 > 0:39:14I've had a slight change of plan.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17I would prefer, and I know this

0:39:17 > 0:39:19gives Jane a little bit of a pause for thought,

0:39:19 > 0:39:24I would prefer to work for myself and do my own business.

0:39:24 > 0:39:29So I settled on providing what they call a virtual assistance business,

0:39:29 > 0:39:33and that's helping other smaller, medium-sized businesses,

0:39:33 > 0:39:37who have perhaps got to the size where they need assistance,

0:39:37 > 0:39:40they've got too much to do, but they're not quite big enough yet

0:39:40 > 0:39:43to take on a full-time member of staff to do it.

0:39:43 > 0:39:48So they will contract with somebody like myself so many hours a month

0:39:48 > 0:39:50to do those fill-in bits for them.

0:39:50 > 0:39:55I am worried that he is going to start a business

0:39:55 > 0:39:59rather than get a job because it is a time thing.

0:39:59 > 0:40:02You know, to start his own business, I know he'd be fantastic at it,

0:40:02 > 0:40:05that's not a worry at all, but it's a time issue.

0:40:05 > 0:40:09Because Simon's my sponsor, he has to have some form of income

0:40:09 > 0:40:12for me to go over cos he's the one that's providing for me

0:40:12 > 0:40:15for the next two years, that's what he has to do legally.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18If he is going to, I'm going to say take time setting up a business

0:40:18 > 0:40:22that doesn't sound right, but it is going to take time and if he's going

0:40:22 > 0:40:25to do that for the next, what, two years,

0:40:25 > 0:40:28then that's two years we're going to be apart.

0:40:28 > 0:40:32And I think it would take a very special relationship to do that.

0:40:32 > 0:40:35I mean, two years apart...hard.

0:40:35 > 0:40:39I think Jane's going to struggle while Simon's gone.

0:40:41 > 0:40:43Cos any relationship's difficult,

0:40:43 > 0:40:47you've got to work at it even when you're together in the same place.

0:40:47 > 0:40:51Being thousands of miles away, yeah, I think Jane will struggle

0:40:51 > 0:40:53with that but she has a massive support system here

0:40:53 > 0:40:57with lots of friends and we'll make sure she's OK.

0:40:57 > 0:41:00And Meg, Jane's mother, takes the long view.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04A lot of my ancestors went to Australia many, many years ago

0:41:04 > 0:41:07when they went to work in the mines.

0:41:07 > 0:41:11We've lost touch, of course, but they're there somewhere.

0:41:11 > 0:41:16And she knows that being apart for a short time is a small price to pay.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19I know that they both desperately want to go

0:41:19 > 0:41:22and it's going to be so good for them.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25I mean, they haven't got children.

0:41:25 > 0:41:29They've got Harry, and it sounds as though it's going

0:41:29 > 0:41:31to be very, very good for Harry, you know?

0:41:31 > 0:41:34No, I think it's going to be lovely.

0:41:34 > 0:41:36I hope it's going to be lovely.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38Simon's original dream of living

0:41:38 > 0:41:41down under has now become Jane's dream.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44And whilst saying goodbye to friends is hard,

0:41:44 > 0:41:48saying goodbye to the love of her life is even harder.

0:41:48 > 0:41:52I think watching you go through the airport doors

0:41:52 > 0:41:54is going to be awful, I really do.

0:41:54 > 0:41:57I think then I'm going to know it's real.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00And I think only then I'm going to actually take it all in

0:42:00 > 0:42:04that you're going to the other side of the world without me.

0:42:04 > 0:42:05And I'm dreading it.

0:42:08 > 0:42:12Two days later, Jane drives Simon to the airport.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16Are there concerns? Are there worries?

0:42:16 > 0:42:19Well, let's go through worst case scenario...

0:42:19 > 0:42:21I get out to Australia,

0:42:21 > 0:42:25I think I can run a business and get it going but it doesn't take off,

0:42:25 > 0:42:28it takes longer than expected and I struggle to get the business going.

0:42:28 > 0:42:31Or what if the visa doesn't come through?

0:42:31 > 0:42:33I mean, that would be the nightmare scenario.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35They say, "Sorry, we don't think

0:42:35 > 0:42:36"you're in a relationship, you can't go."

0:42:36 > 0:42:38That would be a nightmare.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41I'm on the plane, I'm back to the UK.

0:42:41 > 0:42:45I'm living in this weather instead of the sunshine,

0:42:45 > 0:42:47but that's the reality, that's what would happen.

0:42:49 > 0:42:51You'll be out with me before you know it.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53You will, you'll be there.

0:42:53 > 0:42:54I hope so.

0:42:56 > 0:42:58- I love you.- I love you, too.

0:43:10 > 0:43:14With Simon winging his way across continents and oceans

0:43:14 > 0:43:18to begin laying the foundations for a new life down under,
