0:00:02 > 0:00:04The Buchanan family dreamed of a move down under

0:00:04 > 0:00:07to improve their disabled son Jordan's quality of life.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10I think Jordan would benefit the most out of everybody.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13But things got off to a very bad start.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15Oh, God, there's a cockroach.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18Ew! It's horrible. Yeah.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21And Angie's daughter Sophie was torn about leaving her dad.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24I think the hardest thing for me

0:00:24 > 0:00:27would be leaving my dad and my sisters and my stepmum.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29I try not to think about it, to be honest.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32When we caught up with them two years later,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35we found out if the family had made the move.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39When we initially found out about the visa,

0:00:39 > 0:00:42and Jordan maybe not being eligible,

0:00:42 > 0:00:44we were obviously a bit shocked.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46But where are the Buchanans now?

0:00:46 > 0:00:49In the UK or living down under?

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Australia's famous laidback way of life, sunny climate

0:01:14 > 0:01:18and almost 30,000 miles of coastline

0:01:18 > 0:01:22has made it the chosen destination for Brits moving abroad.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24But life down under doesn't always give you

0:01:24 > 0:01:26the kind of paradise you imagine.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32In 2011, the Buchanan family faced a huge decision -

0:01:32 > 0:01:35whether to leave their family in Scotland

0:01:35 > 0:01:38to start a new life down under.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41We gave them a week to explore that possibility,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44and then caught up with them two years later.

0:01:44 > 0:01:49Today, we'll find out what's happened since we last met.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Back in 2011, it took the Buchanans over 24 hours

0:01:53 > 0:01:55to reach Brisbane from home in Scotland,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58giving them time to think about what they're about to do.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01- It was tough.- I don't think we could get used to that.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Nobody could get used to that.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06If we make the decision to stay here, I think

0:02:06 > 0:02:08the visits back home would be limited.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10Regardless of the long journey,

0:02:10 > 0:02:14the family were looking forward to the week ahead.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Back in the UK, the Buchanans lived in Armadale,

0:02:17 > 0:02:18a small town outside of Edinburgh.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21There was Angie and husband Jason,

0:02:21 > 0:02:24along with Angie's son Jordan, who was 18,

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Angie's daughter Sophie, who was 13,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29and their two-year-old son Jay.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32The couple had been married for six years,

0:02:32 > 0:02:37but since the beginning, Jason has had one dream for his family.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40I visited Australia about nine years ago,

0:02:40 > 0:02:44and ever since I've met Angie, I've wanted to go back.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48Unfortunately for Jason, Angie had very different ideas

0:02:48 > 0:02:50about where their future lay.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53I've never fancied going.

0:02:53 > 0:02:54I've always been...

0:02:55 > 0:02:59I'm Scottish, I stay in Scotland, this is where all my roots are.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03I like being a mum, having foundations for our family,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05whereas Jason would pack his bags and go tomorrow.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12However, concerns about her children's future

0:03:12 > 0:03:15had pushed Angie towards considering Australia.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20We believe, after hours and hours of discussion,

0:03:20 > 0:03:23that it would be best for all of us in the family,

0:03:23 > 0:03:24in particular Jordan.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28I think Jordan would benefit the most out of everybody.

0:03:28 > 0:03:3218-year-old Jordan's disabilities meant he required extra care.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Jason and Angie believed a move to Australia

0:03:34 > 0:03:37would improve his life dramatically.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Jordan flourishes in the summer. When we go on holiday...

0:03:41 > 0:03:45Yeah, if we go on holiday, Jordan becomes a different boy altogether.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48The weather affecting his joints, and stuff like that.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50So, his mobility, his posture...

0:03:50 > 0:03:52He really finds it difficult here.

0:03:52 > 0:03:57When it comes to wintertime, Jordan basically hibernates in a room.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01We certainly believe he's got more potential than sitting in a room.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07But it was Angie's daughter Sophie who was resisting the move the most,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10facing the possibility of living on the other side of the world

0:04:10 > 0:04:12from her dad.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15I don't fancy living in Australia at all.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19My biggest fear would be I would never, ever see my little sisters

0:04:19 > 0:04:24or my dad or my friends, or stuff, ever again.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27So it would be quite upsetting to leave them, and stuff.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31It's hard cos I don't want Sophie leaving her family,

0:04:31 > 0:04:36her dad and her sisters and step-family, but...

0:04:36 > 0:04:40the thing with Sophie is, I'm trying to better Sophie's life for her,

0:04:40 > 0:04:41give her more opportunities,

0:04:41 > 0:04:45and I think when we go to Australia, she'll flourish.

0:04:45 > 0:04:50So, I need to make sure that Sophie's OK in going to Australia.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53And with a tight-knit family at home,

0:04:53 > 0:04:57they were also concerned about what they were giving up.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00My biggest concern would be leaving my mum.

0:05:00 > 0:05:05We see her almost daily. So, not only am I leaving her

0:05:05 > 0:05:09but I'm taking her grandkids away as well.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11Having decided to give Australia a go,

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Jason had just one week to convince them

0:05:13 > 0:05:16this was the right move for everyone.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18It's the two girls that we have to convince

0:05:18 > 0:05:20to ensure that this goes through.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24Sophie and Angie.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26Jason would be there tomorrow, it's his dream,

0:05:26 > 0:05:30but at the end of the day, it's not just Jason's choice.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32It's Jordan, Sophie and Jay's as well.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35It's a family thing.

0:05:35 > 0:05:36For their week in Australia,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38the Buchanans stayed in the Redcliffe area,

0:05:38 > 0:05:41just 20 miles north of Brisbane.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Their base was a traditional Queensland timber house.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47As it was Angie's and the children's first time in Australia,

0:05:47 > 0:05:50Jason knew it had to make a good first impression.

0:05:52 > 0:05:53Oh, this is big, Jay.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Oh, this is a dining room.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01- Oh, this is Jay's room!- Let me see!

0:06:01 > 0:06:06- Cool.- Oh, wow. - And that's Jordy's bed.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09- This is bigger than your room, isn't it?- Aye.- Cool.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13That all sounded positive.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15But once they'd had time to unpack,

0:06:15 > 0:06:18there were second thoughts.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21First impressions of the house, very old-fashioned.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25Definitely wouldn't be something that we would look at.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29Since I've got here, it's not really blown me away

0:06:29 > 0:06:33as much as I thought it would, so I hope it opens up to me

0:06:33 > 0:06:35during the week.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39After the first night, things went from bad to worse.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43When we came in yesterday,

0:06:43 > 0:06:48I don't think either one of us were completely happy with the house,

0:06:48 > 0:06:52but it just got worse. Behind the surface, the house was disgusting.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56We saw a mouse. And that kind of scared me.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59So, like, as far as it goes for me,

0:06:59 > 0:07:03I'm not convinced at all that I would like to live here.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06It was a bad start for the Buchanans,

0:07:06 > 0:07:09and a blow for Jason's hopes to relocate.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15Thankfully, a move to a modern apartment,

0:07:15 > 0:07:19free from visitors and close to the beach, was a big improvement.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21This is nice.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24This is much better.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Back in the UK, the family lived in a modern, five-bedroom home.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34It was their pride and joy and they had firm ideas

0:07:34 > 0:07:38about what an Australian home should offer.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40We need a four-bedroomed house

0:07:40 > 0:07:43because of the different ages of the kids.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46Hopefully, a newer-build house.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49The dream is to go there and have a nice standard of living,

0:07:49 > 0:07:53which, in the first place, equates to a nice house.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57They thought their house was worth £180,000,

0:07:57 > 0:08:01which would bring their budget to the £250,000 mark.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06We arranged to give the Buchanans

0:08:06 > 0:08:09a taste of Brisbane's housing market. We showed them

0:08:09 > 0:08:10three typical options

0:08:10 > 0:08:13based upon what they wanted from their ideal home,

0:08:13 > 0:08:15what they can afford,

0:08:15 > 0:08:18and the real price of property down under.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20After seeing what was on offer,

0:08:20 > 0:08:23we'll revealed how much each house cost.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27The first stop was this four-bedroom house in Scarborough,

0:08:27 > 0:08:3120 miles from Brisbane. It was close to the beach and shops,

0:08:31 > 0:08:33but in need of renovation,

0:08:33 > 0:08:36which should have meant it would be good value for money.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43- That's a bit strange, eh? - What's this?

0:08:43 > 0:08:47Whoof, oh, there's a big cockroach up there.

0:08:47 > 0:08:52Eek! That wasn't good start to any house viewing!

0:08:52 > 0:08:55- Oh, my God.- It's horrible.- Yeah.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Oh, God, there's a cockroach.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59It wasn't any better upstairs

0:08:59 > 0:09:03but Jason did have some ideas on improving things.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06If anything was to be done with this house,

0:09:06 > 0:09:08- I think it needs knocked down.- Aye. - And rebuilt.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11What about little Jay? He seemed pretty chilled.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14- Do you like this house?- No.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17This house was definitely not the start Jason wanted

0:09:17 > 0:09:20and that was before they'd even found out its price.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24Would their £250,000 budget be enough to cover

0:09:24 > 0:09:27the cost and renovation expenses?

0:09:27 > 0:09:30- No way.- £217,000.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33- No chance.- No chance.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36It might have been affordable,

0:09:36 > 0:09:38but this property had got Jason's house-hunt

0:09:38 > 0:09:40off to the worst possible start,

0:09:40 > 0:09:44The second house was also in Scarborough, had four bedrooms

0:09:44 > 0:09:46and was close to the waterfront.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49For Jason, it really needed to impress.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51Oh, look at that, Jay!

0:09:51 > 0:09:53Wow!

0:09:53 > 0:09:57- This is more like what we were... - I love it.- ..looking for.

0:09:57 > 0:10:02The pool was a great start, but they were yet to set foot indoors.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05- Oh, that's nice.- Oh, this is lovely.- Oh, wow, look at that.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Great. Spot on.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11- It's lovely.- It's lovely. - Absolutely lovely.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14I love the ceiling, I love the windows...

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Just the whole layout, it's just perfect.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18That was music to Jason's ears.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20Is this Jordy's room?

0:10:20 > 0:10:23We'd need to get this decorated for you, wouldn't we?

0:10:23 > 0:10:24You'd get everything in here.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27Do you think this would be the perfect size for you?

0:10:27 > 0:10:30This house had done a far better job

0:10:30 > 0:10:32of impressing the Buchanans,

0:10:32 > 0:10:35but was it within reach of their £250,000 budget?

0:10:36 > 0:10:39So, this is the price of this house.

0:10:39 > 0:10:40Ready?

0:10:41 > 0:10:43365.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46- I would say that was definitely... - Worth it.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48..at the very limit of what we could afford.

0:10:48 > 0:10:49- Mmm.- I think.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53It looked like Jason's hopes of moving his family were on the up

0:10:53 > 0:10:57but the price wasn't ideal.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01Could the final house convince everyone without breaking the bank?

0:11:01 > 0:11:04Property number three was a four-bedroomed new-build

0:11:04 > 0:11:06in North Lakes, slightly closer to central Brisbane,

0:11:06 > 0:11:09but because it was further inland,

0:11:09 > 0:11:11it should have offered better value for money.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13Wow.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15- Love it.- This is nice.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17This is nice.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21For me, this... It ticks all the boxes.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23This would be my dream home.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28- There's a pool.- Never mind the pool, look at the barbecue.- Uh-huh.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30Unbelievable.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33Mum and Dad were convinced, but what about the rest of the family?

0:11:33 > 0:11:37- I think I would consider moving... - For this house.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40..if this was our house.

0:11:40 > 0:11:41Much to Jason's relief,

0:11:41 > 0:11:46this property seemed to offer everything the Buchanans wanted,

0:11:46 > 0:11:51but was the dream house a fantasy or a possibility?

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- 350,000. It's cheaper.- It's cheaper.

0:11:54 > 0:11:58I can't believe that this is cheaper than the other house.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00It's kind of shocked me.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02This was great news for Jason's dream,

0:12:02 > 0:12:06but being over budget meant it would have put the family's finances

0:12:06 > 0:12:07under pressure.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11The Buchanans had seen three very different properties

0:12:11 > 0:12:13and after a disappointing start to the day,

0:12:13 > 0:12:15did they vote home or away?

0:12:18 > 0:12:20- ALL:- Australia!

0:12:30 > 0:12:32That was a great result for Jason,

0:12:32 > 0:12:35but getting the dream home would require well-paid jobs.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38Angie worked in social care but wanted to return to nursing.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42Ideally, my main aim is to go back into children's nursing

0:12:42 > 0:12:44because I'm a qualified children's nurse.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47Angie's nursing qualification was critical to the family's

0:12:47 > 0:12:51visa application, so the whole move was resting on her shoulders.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55We arranged for Angie to visit Brisbane's Redcliffe Hospital,

0:12:55 > 0:12:58to get a feel for working in down under.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02- Hiya.- Hello, I'm Emma Fitzhenry, the Nurse Unit Manager for Paediatrics.

0:13:02 > 0:13:06- How are you doing?- Nervous. - Oh, you'll be all right.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09- Come with me, we'll go up to the children's ward.- Thank you.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13While Angie got stuck in,

0:13:13 > 0:13:15Jason took the children to the park.

0:13:15 > 0:13:20Back home, I own my own business dealing with office technology,

0:13:20 > 0:13:23in particular, photocopiers, printers and scanners.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26However, coming to Australia, at this stage,

0:13:26 > 0:13:30I wouldn't have any ambition to start up my own company,

0:13:30 > 0:13:32coming over here.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35I think it would be wise to find employment

0:13:35 > 0:13:37and see where that goes.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39Back on the ward,

0:13:39 > 0:13:42Emma was putting Angie's bedside manner through her paces.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45Did she still have what it takes?

0:13:45 > 0:13:50- So, I might just introduce you to Calum.- Hiya. And what did you do?

0:13:50 > 0:13:53I didn't do it. Someone fell on top of me.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55- Can I see your arm?- Wow.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58- Have your friends wrote on it? - Yeah.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01While Angie was back on familiar ground,

0:14:01 > 0:14:04Sophie was considering her new life.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06Since we're here, surprisingly,

0:14:06 > 0:14:08didn't think it'd be as good as it has been.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12I think the thing that's most pushing me towards Australia now

0:14:12 > 0:14:16is just being here and experiencing it for yourself is...

0:14:16 > 0:14:19It's not like a holiday, it's actually somewhere you could live.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25But she was still struggling with her decision.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27I think the hardest thing for me

0:14:27 > 0:14:30would be leaving my dad and my sisters and my step-mum

0:14:30 > 0:14:32and I think...

0:14:32 > 0:14:34I try not to think about it, to be honest.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40Back at the hospital, Angie was getting down to business with Emma.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42At home, I worked part time, so, what,

0:14:42 > 0:14:45are there vacancies for part-time staff or...

0:14:45 > 0:14:47Yep, most of my staff are part time.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49- Oh, right.- It's the minority that are full time.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53So, you know, it's a great work/life balance.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55Are there vacancies available?

0:14:55 > 0:14:58We don't have any vacancies at the moment

0:14:58 > 0:15:02but with six beds opening at the beginning of next year,

0:15:02 > 0:15:04I'll have eight full-time positions.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06Thank you. When it comes to salaries,

0:15:06 > 0:15:09what is, like, a full-time employee and what's part time?

0:15:09 > 0:15:12So, dependent on your experience

0:15:12 > 0:15:14and where you would sit on the pay scale,

0:15:14 > 0:15:17as a registered nurse, you could earn anywhere from 58,000

0:15:17 > 0:15:21to 78,000 at the top end of the scale.

0:15:21 > 0:15:26Oh, that's great. Jason wouldn't want to work if that was the case.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30That meant Angie would have a salary of £37,000

0:15:30 > 0:15:33if she was prepared to work full time.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Today has been very, very positive. I feel a lot calmer.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42I'm a bit excited, actually, being honest with you.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44Angie's prospects were looking good

0:15:44 > 0:15:46but how would she vote?

0:15:46 > 0:15:48Australia!

0:15:49 > 0:15:51For me, as the main applicant,

0:15:51 > 0:15:55I feel that I've got no worries getting a job.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59It's been a very pleasant experience today.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05With Angie's vote for work in Australia,

0:16:05 > 0:16:08it was definitely looking more positive for Jason.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11But could the family actually afford to make the move?

0:16:11 > 0:16:13To help figure it out,

0:16:13 > 0:16:15we had prepared a breakdown of their everyday living costs.

0:16:18 > 0:16:23- Oh, look at the size of the mortgage.- Mortgage repayments 1,811,

0:16:23 > 0:16:27so, the mortgage payment has doubled.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29So in terms of outgoings...

0:16:29 > 0:16:34we're just slightly more than we would be back home.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38However, our salaries have increased quite substantially,

0:16:38 > 0:16:41which means we're far better off here.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43- We're quids in.- We're quids in.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46Angie and Jason had worked out

0:16:46 > 0:16:49they'd be a lot better off in Australia

0:16:49 > 0:16:53if they both worked full time. So, how did they vote?

0:16:56 > 0:16:58Australia.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03Australia.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13Realising they could afford to live in Australia

0:17:13 > 0:17:15was a good result for Jason

0:17:15 > 0:17:18but the move was still far from certain.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21Both he and Angie needed to know if Oz could offer Jordan

0:17:21 > 0:17:23the independent outdoor life he thrived in.

0:17:23 > 0:17:28But I think that the two of us would like Jordan to have a wee job and...

0:17:28 > 0:17:29And start his own life.

0:17:29 > 0:17:34He is kind of secluded to his wee self

0:17:34 > 0:17:39and he doesn't have any communications with anybody.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42And, as a mum, it's worrying because you don't want

0:17:42 > 0:17:46everything that you've done for your son, for him to waste away.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50So we've arranged for them to visit Cascade Place,

0:17:50 > 0:17:53a day centre for adults with a range of disabilities.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56- Welcome, guys.- Hi there, how are you doing?- I'm Jason.- G'day, Jason.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59- This is Jordan. - G'day, Jordan. How are you, mate?

0:17:59 > 0:18:02Come on through, guys. Welcome.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04This is nice and colourful.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07Everything that you see in this room has been made here.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11All I've ever wanted was for Jordan to be seen as a person,

0:18:11 > 0:18:16not as a figure or a number, or just somebody with special needs,

0:18:16 > 0:18:18but to be identified as Jordan.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Geoff Trappet from the Queensland Cerebral Palsy League,

0:18:21 > 0:18:24was able to address their concerns.

0:18:24 > 0:18:28What's really important for us is how we can progress Jordan

0:18:28 > 0:18:31and find the right activities or workshops

0:18:31 > 0:18:34that's going to take him into adulthood.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36So, it's about building those skills up

0:18:36 > 0:18:38that someone would build up in life

0:18:38 > 0:18:40to be able to move on to the next stage.

0:18:40 > 0:18:44And do you get involved in employment opportunities for him?

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Our job is to help Jordan with whatever his goals are.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51So, if that's to get work, then that's what we can work on.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53Had the Buchanans heard enough?

0:18:53 > 0:18:56- I feel a lot better. - I feel a lot more confident

0:18:56 > 0:19:01from just one association that we've spoke to.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03I think Jordan would excel.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06The day seemed to have answered Angie's concerns,

0:19:06 > 0:19:09and Jason's dream appeared to be one step closer.

0:19:11 > 0:19:15Before the final vote, the family had to face

0:19:15 > 0:19:17the reality of leaving behind the people they love.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19While little Jay had a nap,

0:19:19 > 0:19:23they watched some messages from friends and family at home.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25- Hi, guys.- Hello, guys.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27I hope yous are having a great time in Australia.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30Angie and Jason are meant for each other.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32They totally bounce off each other.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34And every weekend they've always got a plan

0:19:34 > 0:19:40for the kids. Every weekend, not just the school holidays.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42And they're lovely kids.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45It's going to just...

0:19:45 > 0:19:47break my heart to say goodbye to them.

0:19:49 > 0:19:50If yous decide to move to Australia,

0:19:50 > 0:19:52I will miss you, like, loads,

0:19:52 > 0:19:54cos we've been friends for so many years and, like,

0:19:54 > 0:19:56all the stuff we've been through,

0:19:56 > 0:19:59all the laughs and all the sad bits that we've had,

0:19:59 > 0:20:02I'm going to really miss them all, and I'll really miss you, too.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04If yous do decide to go,

0:20:04 > 0:20:08it's going to rip us up a bit, because you're my wee sister,

0:20:08 > 0:20:10my nephew, my niece,

0:20:10 > 0:20:14it's just going to, kind of, rip us up a little bit.

0:20:14 > 0:20:18Well, I think... they're doing the right thing.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21I know for a fact he loves me to bits.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23As long as they're happy, that's all that matters.

0:20:24 > 0:20:29Jason, I've always said to you, if an opportunity comes up,

0:20:29 > 0:20:31in any way, go for it.

0:20:31 > 0:20:36And I still say go for it. I think it's the best decision

0:20:36 > 0:20:39the two of yous could make for the family and yous.

0:20:43 > 0:20:44Move over.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Do you want a cuddle, Jordy?

0:20:53 > 0:20:58It has been made a lot more real, that we might actually go.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04Just need to wait and see.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10Seeing messages from home was painful for Sophie and Angie,

0:21:10 > 0:21:13and even Jason's started to have doubts.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18I've always been the one driving this

0:21:18 > 0:21:22but it's been pretty overwhelming this week,

0:21:22 > 0:21:25thinking, you know... reality's starting to kick in.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28And, obviously, I'm leaving my mum,

0:21:28 > 0:21:33um...which is going to be tough, especially at the age she's at.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35For Angie, the week had shown her

0:21:35 > 0:21:38what the move could have meant for Jordan.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41In the last few days, I mean, Jordan's just excelled

0:21:41 > 0:21:44in his personality, in talking to people.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47This is going to be one of the toughest decisions

0:21:47 > 0:21:50we've got to make, because it's not just me and Jason's choice.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54It was time for the Buchanans to make their final vote.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59So, it's been a great week. Lots of new experiences,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02loads of vital information

0:22:02 > 0:22:05and we're now ready to vote, UK or Australia.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13- Australia.- Australia.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15I'm not sure.

0:22:17 > 0:22:21Four out of five ain't bad.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24Having faced the ups and downs of life in down under,

0:22:24 > 0:22:28it seemed like the move wasn't quite in the bag yet.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35Back in March 2013, we caught up with the Buchanans,

0:22:35 > 0:22:38who were still living in...Scotland.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40Sort of.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42The family had dealt with some turbulent times

0:22:42 > 0:22:43since we last saw them,

0:22:43 > 0:22:46including the sad passing of Jason's mum.

0:22:46 > 0:22:51My mum was watching the kids, or Jordan and Jay, overnight,

0:22:51 > 0:22:58and she just suddenly became unwell and a day later died,

0:22:58 > 0:23:02so that was all really sudden that that happened,

0:23:02 > 0:23:06and obviously had a horrendous effect on us all.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08Jason was heartbroken,

0:23:08 > 0:23:10but it's just...

0:23:14 > 0:23:16It's just gave us

0:23:16 > 0:23:19the kind of nod on the head...

0:23:19 > 0:23:23It's almost as if Australia's what we're supposed to be doing.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26It was great knowing that my mum gave us the full backing

0:23:26 > 0:23:29to go to Australia, should we wish to do that,

0:23:29 > 0:23:31when she was alive,

0:23:31 > 0:23:33so that was reassuring, anyway.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36And my mum always said that anyway.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40If we were going to go and it was going to better our lives,

0:23:40 > 0:23:42and especially the kids' lives,

0:23:42 > 0:23:44then we should go for it, so that was good to know.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48Angie had been busy working hard to secure her visa,

0:23:48 > 0:23:51which was their key to starting a new life down under,

0:23:51 > 0:23:54but in the end, it wasn't needed after all.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56We were just ticking along

0:23:56 > 0:23:59and waiting for my paperwork to come through for my visa,

0:23:59 > 0:24:03for my nursing, so that I could apply for our sponsorship.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06However, Jason applied online one day

0:24:06 > 0:24:10and received an offer of a position in Australia

0:24:10 > 0:24:13on a temporary four-year visa.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16And it was Jason that got the visa, not me.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19So all my hard work for nothing!

0:24:19 > 0:24:22Incredibly, within days of getting the job offer,

0:24:22 > 0:24:26Jason was in Australia and had already been there three weeks.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29Angie and the children were packing up the house

0:24:29 > 0:24:31before heading off to Australia themselves.

0:24:31 > 0:24:35So basically, it's made the whole move

0:24:35 > 0:24:38go faster than what we expected,

0:24:38 > 0:24:40and the fact that Jason's been away for three weeks

0:24:40 > 0:24:45and we're flying out tomorrow, so everything's just went...

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Everyone was thrilled with the move,

0:24:48 > 0:24:51and even Sophie had come to terms with leaving her dad

0:24:51 > 0:24:52on the other side of the world.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55Yeah, I think Sophie's really looking forward to it.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58My wee gran bought me this wee bracelet,

0:24:58 > 0:24:59which is lovely.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01My favourite colour.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04So... Just to say goodbye.

0:25:08 > 0:25:1148 hours and 10,000 miles later

0:25:11 > 0:25:17and the family were finally reunited in Brisbane, Australia.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23Hello!

0:25:23 > 0:25:25How are yous?

0:25:25 > 0:25:26Hiya, darling.

0:25:28 > 0:25:29Give me a cuddle!

0:25:34 > 0:25:35Give me a kiss.

0:25:39 > 0:25:40Hiya. You missed me?

0:25:42 > 0:25:43Hi, you.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Are you all right?

0:25:47 > 0:25:50I thought yous weren't coming there for a minute.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53I've got a bit of chewing gum in my bag for you.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56Oh, cool, mate. Give me a big kiss.

0:25:56 > 0:26:00For Angie in particular, it was an emotional reunion,

0:26:00 > 0:26:03and Jason was delighted to have the family back by his side.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06It's just... It's an adventure. We've got lots to do.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09I'm sure it's not going to be easy in the coming weeks,

0:26:09 > 0:26:11maybe even months ahead,

0:26:11 > 0:26:14but we just need to all pull together

0:26:14 > 0:26:16and get Sophie into school,

0:26:16 > 0:26:18get the wife working,

0:26:18 > 0:26:20get Jordan into college

0:26:20 > 0:26:23and me and Jay'll just spend days at the beach.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25But I'm having a break first!

0:26:26 > 0:26:28It was years in the planning,

0:26:28 > 0:26:31but the Buchanan family were finally ready to start

0:26:31 > 0:26:34their new life in Australia.

0:26:37 > 0:26:38Three weeks later,

0:26:38 > 0:26:42we stopped by to see how the family were settling in.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45The Buchanans had rented a home in Coomera, 30 miles from Brisbane.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48We moved into this property a couple of weeks ago.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51It's... If we're being honest,

0:26:51 > 0:26:55it's a bit lower than our expectations were.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58It's a nice house, it's a new house,

0:26:58 > 0:27:01it's got four bedrooms, a small garden.

0:27:01 > 0:27:06But it was really important that we just got a base.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08I wanted to settle down.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11I didn't want to be staying in a hotel apartment.

0:27:11 > 0:27:14So we kind of just jumped into this house.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17And although it does its purpose,

0:27:17 > 0:27:22it's not ideal and we're already looking for a new house. So...!

0:27:22 > 0:27:25Jason was working as an accounts manager

0:27:25 > 0:27:27for an office technology company

0:27:27 > 0:27:29and the job was going well.

0:27:29 > 0:27:31It's been excellent so far.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Really good company to work for.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37Work hard and play hard, but really relaxed.

0:27:37 > 0:27:42And, yeah, so far, early days, it's been great.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45And the guys have done a lot to make me fit in.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48And while Angie was busy getting the children settled,

0:27:48 > 0:27:52she had already started thinking hard about returning to work.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55And she had a change of mind about working part time.

0:27:55 > 0:27:59But once they're sorted, obviously I want to go back into my nursing

0:27:59 > 0:28:03and that was the whole point of doing my nursing course.

0:28:03 > 0:28:06So hopefully go back

0:28:06 > 0:28:08and I'll be working full time.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11I think working full time over here

0:28:11 > 0:28:13would still give me family time...

0:28:13 > 0:28:17..but obviously boost our wages up at the end of the week.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20So...that's what it's about.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23Moving to the other side of the world was a massive challenge

0:28:23 > 0:28:26but the boys had taken it in their stride.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29The kids are settling in great. Jay absolutely loves it.

0:28:29 > 0:28:34He's going to be right little Aussie surfer dude, I would imagine.

0:28:34 > 0:28:37And the dream of Jordan flourishing down under

0:28:37 > 0:28:40seemed to be already paying off.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42Jordan always shines on holiday.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45So to see that when you go on holiday

0:28:45 > 0:28:48for two weeks a year or whatever back home

0:28:48 > 0:28:51and Jordan comes out of his shell,

0:28:51 > 0:28:54to have that ongoing, every day...

0:28:54 > 0:28:55you can't explain it.

0:28:57 > 0:28:59I just love seeing him developing

0:28:59 > 0:29:02into the young man that he should be.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05But it was Sophie who had left the most behind.

0:29:05 > 0:29:09Before I moved over, I felt that,

0:29:09 > 0:29:11you know, that was kind of going to be it.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14We wouldn't talk as much and stuff like that.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17But I missed my wee sister's birthday, she's just turned seven,

0:29:17 > 0:29:20but we were, like, Skyping and I sent over cards.

0:29:20 > 0:29:23And my dad FaceTimes me all the time

0:29:23 > 0:29:26and I speak to my step-mum just as much as I did in Scotland.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28She's struggling just now

0:29:28 > 0:29:31so I think Sophie's looking forward to getting into school.

0:29:31 > 0:29:36She's already went over her internet access limit twice

0:29:36 > 0:29:41with FaceTiming and everything else, so...

0:29:41 > 0:29:44She's a strong-headed girl.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48She's accepted the move to Australia.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52She knows that it could be a really good opportunity for her,

0:29:52 > 0:29:54as well as the family.

0:29:54 > 0:29:58So, again, if we can get her interacting as soon as possible

0:29:58 > 0:30:00with people her age,

0:30:00 > 0:30:05then I honestly believe that Sophie will flourish here.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08Of course, there were a few things the couple missed about back home.

0:30:08 > 0:30:10The one thing, the small thing, would be

0:30:10 > 0:30:12I miss the football on the TV.

0:30:12 > 0:30:15Erm, but you can obviously get that here,

0:30:15 > 0:30:18although it's, you know, in the early hours of the morning.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21But that was something that I watched a lot back home,

0:30:21 > 0:30:22so I miss that.

0:30:22 > 0:30:26But in terms of anything else, so far, I don't miss anything.

0:30:26 > 0:30:31Yeah, I think I've got a couple of close friends that you miss,

0:30:31 > 0:30:33just popping in and having a coffee with.

0:30:33 > 0:30:38- But, apart from them...- No.

0:30:38 > 0:30:41..nuh, I don't miss anything.

0:30:41 > 0:30:42We're not homesick.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45We just feel like we're settling in and we fit in.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48Although they'd only been in the country a few weeks,

0:30:48 > 0:30:50and had had a few teething problems,

0:30:50 > 0:30:54already the family felt their lives had been transformed.

0:30:54 > 0:30:56The weather over here, it's been more quality things,

0:30:56 > 0:30:59things that we've wanted to do, like take Jay to the park,

0:30:59 > 0:31:03take Jay to football, take Jordan swimming into the sea.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07Stuff like that, that's what we're actually experiencing.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10So, I would say it's a better quality of family time

0:31:10 > 0:31:13that we've got. than compared to back home.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16Yeah, it's great, as a dad, being able to do all these things

0:31:16 > 0:31:18with the kids and with Angie,

0:31:18 > 0:31:22it's just, yeah, it brings you all closer together.

0:31:22 > 0:31:27And if the kids are happy, then that only helps us be happy.

0:31:27 > 0:31:31It had been an incredibly long journey for the Buchanans to

0:31:31 > 0:31:36reach Australia but Angie and Jason were already reaping the benefits.

0:31:36 > 0:31:42The way things are going just now, erm, I don't think that myself

0:31:42 > 0:31:46and Angie would ever consider going back to the UK.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48Sophie's 15-year-old,

0:31:48 > 0:31:52she may decide at some point in the future that she may want to go back.

0:31:52 > 0:31:59Erm, but I truly believe once she's settled in Australian life

0:31:59 > 0:32:03then the most she would do would go back on holiday.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06But overall, I can't see us going back.

0:32:07 > 0:32:10What I can say is we are living the dream now,

0:32:10 > 0:32:11because it's our dream,

0:32:11 > 0:32:13it's not Jason's dream. It's our dream.

0:32:14 > 0:32:19If somebody was to say to me today, "You need to go back home,"

0:32:19 > 0:32:24I would cry. I don't want to leave this life, this is what we want,

0:32:24 > 0:32:28it's just the beginning of something new.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31So, no return, sorry, Scotland!

0:32:35 > 0:32:39It took the Buchanans years to reach Australia with a rollercoaster

0:32:39 > 0:32:41finale at the end.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45Now, four years later, has Oz lived up to their hopes

0:32:45 > 0:32:50and dreams or did they leave Down Under and return home to Scotland?

0:32:51 > 0:32:53It's 2017 and the Buchanans

0:32:53 > 0:32:56are living in the Gold Coast, near Brisbane.

0:32:56 > 0:33:00And once again, Jason and Angie had moved into a new home

0:33:00 > 0:33:03just before we arrived to film.

0:33:03 > 0:33:06With them is Jordan, who's 23, Sophie, 19

0:33:06 > 0:33:12and working as a waitress, and little Jay, who is now eight.

0:33:12 > 0:33:15The family had some difficulty at first settling in.

0:33:15 > 0:33:19So, the first year was really just about settling in,

0:33:19 > 0:33:21getting Sophie and Jay into school

0:33:21 > 0:33:27and obviously trying to find Jordan some work, as well as our own,

0:33:27 > 0:33:31Angie had a real problem at the start getting some work.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34So, yeah, the first year was really all about settling in.

0:33:34 > 0:33:39We had to find out about the health system, private health,

0:33:39 > 0:33:42Medicare, schools for the kids, erm...

0:33:42 > 0:33:45But we never knew anywhere.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48We didn't know shops, so everything was brand-new.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50And it was really, it was difficult,

0:33:50 > 0:33:53- but it was exciting at times. - Mm-hm. Yeah.

0:33:53 > 0:33:56Erm, coming across new adventures and stuff while we were doing it.

0:33:56 > 0:34:00As Angie said, it was a new adventure for us all,

0:34:00 > 0:34:02so we kind of enjoyed that part.

0:34:02 > 0:34:07As a mum trying to settle kids, making sure everybody was sorted,

0:34:07 > 0:34:12being away from friends, family, not knowing anything or anywhere

0:34:12 > 0:34:15or anybody over here, it was pretty hard at the beginning.

0:34:15 > 0:34:18We're still here four years later, so it must have worked!

0:34:18 > 0:34:22Having just moved in, there's plenty of DIY for the whole family to get stuck into.

0:34:22 > 0:34:26We've only been in the house a couple of days, it's a change of

0:34:26 > 0:34:28area, it's closer to the beach,

0:34:28 > 0:34:32which, to be honest, was Angie's decision.

0:34:32 > 0:34:36She wanted to sample what life would be like towards the beach

0:34:36 > 0:34:37side of things. So...

0:34:37 > 0:34:40Every day, if I'm not working, I'm out,

0:34:40 > 0:34:44Jason will have a day off, we'll go out for lunch, go down the beach.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47Out exploring different places that we've never been.

0:34:47 > 0:34:51back home, I used to go to work, Asda, Marks & Spencer's and home.

0:34:51 > 0:34:55- That was my life. - Yeah, so, this house is rented.

0:34:55 > 0:34:59And, yeah, it looks pretty close to something that we would want

0:34:59 > 0:35:01when we come to buy.

0:35:01 > 0:35:06So, it's got a large swimming pool, large part outside

0:35:06 > 0:35:09and it's fairly spacey inside.

0:35:09 > 0:35:13We would probably be looking for a little bit bigger inside, once we decide to buy.

0:35:13 > 0:35:16Work wise, it's been a challenging few years for the couple.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19Because I was sponsored,

0:35:19 > 0:35:23I started within two days of being in Australia, I started work.

0:35:23 > 0:35:28Erm, so it was very much straight into it for me.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31When Angie came over, about a month after myself,

0:35:31 > 0:35:37she found it really difficult to get some permanent work.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40- You were doing a lot of casual work. - Yeah.

0:35:40 > 0:35:45Which actually put quite a financial strain on us in the first year.

0:35:45 > 0:35:49Erm, it took me about four months just to get my foot in the door

0:35:49 > 0:35:52because it's a different qualification.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55So, usually in Australia you are a general nurse

0:35:55 > 0:35:58but you are a paediatric nurse in the UK.

0:35:58 > 0:36:05So, it was kind of hard. And we were struggling on Jason's basic wage.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09Erm, so, yeah, it was quite hard at the beginning.

0:36:09 > 0:36:13I worked for a nursing agency and in the nursing agency,

0:36:13 > 0:36:15you're not guaranteed that work.

0:36:15 > 0:36:19So, I took a job in the Gold Coast University Hospital

0:36:19 > 0:36:22in the paediatric ward for two years.

0:36:22 > 0:36:26And it was OK but, you know...

0:36:26 > 0:36:29I wanted something more.

0:36:29 > 0:36:34And I moved up to Brisbane, to the new paediatric hospital and,

0:36:34 > 0:36:37yeah, I'm loving my job up there.

0:36:37 > 0:36:41There's plenty of opportunities for developing and, yeah,

0:36:41 > 0:36:44my career's going really good at the moment.

0:36:45 > 0:36:49Last year, we decided that once I had a permanent contract,

0:36:49 > 0:36:53Jason had been talking about setting up his own business,

0:36:53 > 0:36:58and, when I went home and I told Jason that he could give up the jobs

0:36:58 > 0:37:01that he didn't like doing and start his own business, I think

0:37:01 > 0:37:05that was, that was good.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08Yeah, so, the job situation I found myself in,

0:37:08 > 0:37:12initially, when we came to Australia, erm, was,

0:37:12 > 0:37:17I found myself in a sales job, that wasn't paying very well,

0:37:17 > 0:37:23so I quickly had to decide that, you know, I needed another job.

0:37:23 > 0:37:26So, I changed jobs, and of course that then re-kicks,

0:37:26 > 0:37:31or restarts the visa erm, in terms of, after two years,

0:37:31 > 0:37:34you can apply for permanent residency.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37And yeah, I went through a couple of jobs, eventually,

0:37:37 > 0:37:41once Angela got sponsored by the hospital, it meant that I could

0:37:41 > 0:37:45solely concentrate on the football side of things and my new business.

0:37:45 > 0:37:52Jason took the opportunity to turn a lifelong passion into a career.

0:37:53 > 0:37:58I'm now full-time technical director at Gold Coast City Football Club.

0:37:58 > 0:38:02Which means I'm back involved in football full-time,

0:38:02 > 0:38:06which is just pretty unbelievable, to be honest.

0:38:06 > 0:38:09I think the chances of that happening back in Scotland

0:38:09 > 0:38:11would have been very slim.

0:38:11 > 0:38:13The concern before moving over

0:38:13 > 0:38:16was how would the children adapt to a life Down Under?

0:38:17 > 0:38:20And they need not have worried about youngest child Jay.

0:38:22 > 0:38:26Well, Jay's adapted to Australian life, he's just a little Aussie now.

0:38:26 > 0:38:28Yeah.

0:38:28 > 0:38:33He loves living here. He's just out and about, always playing soccer.

0:38:33 > 0:38:38- Or sports.- Swimming.- Swimming. He loves swimming.- Can't keep him out.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41He speaks Scottish to us, Scottish accent, but everybody else,

0:38:41 > 0:38:44he speaks in Australian accent, so...

0:38:44 > 0:38:48He finds it hard, when he's talking and doing his homework,

0:38:48 > 0:38:51then he'll speak to us in Scottish and can't pronounce

0:38:51 > 0:38:55some of the things, so he'll have to speak Aussie, it's quite funny.

0:38:55 > 0:39:00Sophie's had a bit of an up-and-down time, a lot to do with the visa

0:39:00 > 0:39:05process as well because that limited what she can do after school, so

0:39:05 > 0:39:08Sophie finished school over a year and a half ago

0:39:08 > 0:39:10and, erm, she was limited.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14She wanted to go to university or college and university.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17But couldn't because of the visa process,

0:39:17 > 0:39:23so she has struggled, sometimes, she seems to have settled now.

0:39:24 > 0:39:27She's got a little job and a boyfriend.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30- Doing a uni course. - She's doing a uni course online.

0:39:30 > 0:39:34Yeah, it definitely took me about over a year to finally settle in.

0:39:34 > 0:39:40But I think now, being here, I can definitely see why we did it.

0:39:40 > 0:39:43The start of last year, I moved out with a friend,

0:39:43 > 0:39:47moved originally about five minutes away from where my parents were.

0:39:47 > 0:39:51Like, I've had a boyfriend. We've been together just over a year.

0:39:51 > 0:39:55Yeah, then we decided to move in together, which was good.

0:39:55 > 0:39:59And yeah, no, I live about 40 minutes away from my parents now.

0:39:59 > 0:40:01I finished school last year.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04I had just been doing part-time work

0:40:04 > 0:40:08but I'm also studying online to do, like a degree in childcare.

0:40:08 > 0:40:11But the real concern was eldest son Jordan.

0:40:11 > 0:40:13Would he be able to get a full visa?

0:40:13 > 0:40:16Jordan had some health issues when he came over.

0:40:16 > 0:40:21He had been in hospital a couple of times. Erm, very ill.

0:40:21 > 0:40:25So, eventually, Jordan had to actually go for a medical.

0:40:25 > 0:40:28He passed it. Because Jordan got the medical,

0:40:28 > 0:40:30it's the same medical as your permanent residency,

0:40:30 > 0:40:34so, basically, we've got a year before that medical runs out.

0:40:34 > 0:40:39So, we're just need to apply for PR and then hopefully that will be it.

0:40:39 > 0:40:41Jordan was always going to be that miracle baby.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44We were told he wasn't going to survive, he survived.

0:40:44 > 0:40:48We were told he's not going to walk, talk... He's a 24-year-old man,

0:40:48 > 0:40:52who works full-time. Independent.

0:40:52 > 0:40:56And he gives me and Jason so much pleasure that he is achieving stuff.

0:40:56 > 0:40:58So, yeah...

0:40:58 > 0:41:03I'm very proud of the way Jordan's adapted to Australian life

0:41:03 > 0:41:07and work life. And I think the best choice we've ever done for Jordy.

0:41:07 > 0:41:11And with daughter Sophie moving out, you'd expect the family to be

0:41:11 > 0:41:14a little quieter but Angie had different ideas.

0:41:14 > 0:41:17We were having a glass of wine one night

0:41:17 > 0:41:21and Jason kind of agreed to buy a dog...

0:41:21 > 0:41:25So, I showed him this picture of a dog on Facebook

0:41:25 > 0:41:28and it was a picture of a Great Dane.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30But I didn't think Jason realised it was.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33I think the wine had went to his head because he said,

0:41:33 > 0:41:35"Oh, yeah, she's lovely!"

0:41:35 > 0:41:38- And we brought her home and you've never looked back, have you?- No.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40She's the biggest princess ever.

0:41:40 > 0:41:44So, would the family ever consider the move back to Scotland?

0:41:44 > 0:41:48We went home in September last year.

0:41:48 > 0:41:54And from the minute that I stood off the plane, it was dreich,

0:41:54 > 0:41:58it was dreary and my mood just went down like that.

0:41:58 > 0:42:01And, erm, I think when you stay in Australia,

0:42:01 > 0:42:04every morning you get up, the sun's there.

0:42:04 > 0:42:07I mean, I leave the house at 5:30 in the morning,

0:42:07 > 0:42:10I see the sun rising in the morning and it just, I don't know,

0:42:10 > 0:42:14I couldn't picture myself going back to the UK ever to stay.

0:42:14 > 0:42:19Erm, this is, I think, when we chose,

0:42:19 > 0:42:22when Jason bent my arm round my back and said we were going to

0:42:22 > 0:42:26Australia, erm, I wish we'd done it years ago.

0:42:26 > 0:42:30I really, I struggled at the thought when Jason mentioned coming

0:42:30 > 0:42:35- to Australia but if I'd listened to him 13 years ago...- Mm-hm...

0:42:35 > 0:42:39..we'd have been here 13 years ago and not four years ago.

0:42:39 > 0:42:42We just, we love it. We just absolutely love our life.

0:42:43 > 0:42:47Obviously, people want everything best in life

0:42:47 > 0:42:50and I think we've got a good life.

0:42:54 > 0:43:00For the Buchanans, Australia has managed to exceed all expectations.

0:43:00 > 0:43:04And though they've strived for this prize over many years, it's a

0:43:04 > 0:43:08reward richly deserved. As the whole family look forward to a bright

0:43:08 > 0:43:12future on the gorgeous Gold Coast, we wish them the very best of luck.
