0:00:02 > 0:00:04What if moving to the other side of the world

0:00:04 > 0:00:08meant leaving behind your closest family and dearest friends?

0:00:08 > 0:00:11Would you be prepared to give it all up

0:00:11 > 0:00:13for the opportunity of a better life?

0:00:13 > 0:00:19This is the dilemma faced by the Manuel family back in 2007.

0:00:19 > 0:00:24Today, we're going to find out if they had the courage to pack up their lives

0:00:24 > 0:00:25and move down under.

0:00:25 > 0:00:31Back in 2007, the Manuels were dreaming of a new life in the Australian sun.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34This enormous move would have meant a potential role reversal for them

0:00:34 > 0:00:38with a possible return to work for full-time mum Jo-Ann.

0:00:38 > 0:00:43It's been nearly two years since I worked in an office.

0:00:43 > 0:00:49It definitely will take some time getting used to the fact that my little girl's not constantly with me.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52Leaving their friends and family was almost too much to bear.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56It would be hard to wave goodbye to all those people. Now it's a dream,

0:00:56 > 0:01:02but although it would be a wonderful dream, there would be some heartache along the way, as well.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05I cried myself to sleep.

0:01:05 > 0:01:06- I think we've done the right thing. - Yeah.

0:01:27 > 0:01:32In 2007, the Manuels from Crawley

0:01:32 > 0:01:34were faced with a life-changing decision -

0:01:34 > 0:01:41whether to stay in the UK, or to move with their young daughter halfway around the world.

0:01:41 > 0:01:47We gave them one week to experience every aspect of life down under.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49But did they make the move?

0:01:49 > 0:01:52When we first met the Manuel family from West Sussex,

0:01:52 > 0:01:56Jo-Ann and Wayne were considering moving down under

0:01:56 > 0:01:59in search of a better life for their daughter Sienna,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02but this would have meant a dramatic change in all their lives.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Now, obviously, I'm at home at the moment, a mum to Sienna.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10Wayne goes out to work. So I'm not quite sure how it's going to pan out when we go out there.

0:02:10 > 0:02:17Under the Australian points system, it's Jo-Ann's former career in recruitment that would have earned

0:02:17 > 0:02:21them enough points to make the move, but Wayne was keen to do his bit.

0:02:21 > 0:02:26He worked in telecommunications, but could have supplemented his salary DJ-ing in local clubs.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29The intention is that we'll go with those skills

0:02:29 > 0:02:35and Jo-Ann will hopefully, over a longer period of time, find work within that industry.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40But I'm hoping to bring in the main salary

0:02:40 > 0:02:43so that we can survive over there, basically.

0:02:43 > 0:02:48If it's obviously easier for me to get work, it's looking at who's going to make more of a salary,

0:02:48 > 0:02:52then we might have to do a little bit of a swap there.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55But we'll see how it goes.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59And the pressure of supporting his family down under had Wayne very worried.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02My biggest concern is letting Jo-Ann and Sienna down.

0:03:02 > 0:03:07You've got to compare it to the life you have here so, if you're surviving out there

0:03:07 > 0:03:13but life's not very good because you're just making ends meet, then you might as well just go back home.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17So I've got to exceed my expectations that I have.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21But for Jo-Ann, it wasn't about more than money. Family was everything.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25Sienna's really my life, since I've had her.

0:03:25 > 0:03:29The move is really for her and for any future family that we'll have.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33Mum and Dad have done so much for me in my life

0:03:33 > 0:03:38and seeing how happy they are when they see Sienna, it's as though you're giving them something back.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40So I'm sad that I'll be taking that away.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43I'll miss my family and friends so much.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47But she's given me a strength that I didn't know I had.

0:03:47 > 0:03:52And I know that if I've got her and we've got our family, it'll be fine.

0:03:52 > 0:03:58It was going to be a very tough decision - to stay in the UK, or move down under.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05To help the Manuels consider this huge decision,

0:04:05 > 0:04:09they tested out life in Perth for a week

0:04:09 > 0:04:12to experience the true Aussie lifestyle.

0:04:12 > 0:04:17With Jo-Ann and Wayne being so far from everything they knew and loved,

0:04:17 > 0:04:22Perth was going to have a lot to live up to to fulfil their dreams of life in Australia.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27After a gruelling 24-hour journey, the Manuels touched down in Perth.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32- We're better than we thought we'd be, aren't we?- Yeah. It was tiring.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36- But it was tough.- We need some sleep. - Wasn't it? Oh, yeah.

0:04:36 > 0:04:42Despite the long flight, they were looking forward to the week ahead.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46We can't wait to suss out what Perth is all about.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52Their home for a week was a four-bedroom house in the suburb of Currambine.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54About half an hour's drive from central Perth,

0:04:54 > 0:04:58it had the Manuels excited about living in Australia.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00- Ah!- Oh, lovely!

0:05:01 > 0:05:04That's nice.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08- Look at the kitchen! - Nice and spacious.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10Ooh!

0:05:11 > 0:05:14- Ah, it's really nice.- Nice, yeah. Really nice.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16SIENNA BURBLES Do you like it?

0:05:16 > 0:05:20It's the right size for the three of us.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24- I think we're going to have a good week, won't we?- Yeah. We have the space.

0:05:24 > 0:05:29Whenever I've thought of Australia, I've thought of Sydney, Melbourne - really happening cities -

0:05:29 > 0:05:33and Perth has been a place I've not been too keen to visit.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36I've always thought maybe it's slightly slower.

0:05:36 > 0:05:41So I'm looking forward to it, because I want to see if I'm proven wrong. If we're proven wrong.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44It's quite exciting to think

0:05:44 > 0:05:48as the week unfolds we'll get to see lots of different things.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57Back in the UK, the Manuels lived in a three-bedroom house in Crawley.

0:05:57 > 0:06:02The living area was open plan, but they wanted more space for their money.

0:06:02 > 0:06:07In the summer of 2007, their UK home was worth 250,000.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10If the Manuels moved to Perth, their dream was to have

0:06:10 > 0:06:13a two-storey detached house in a quiet suburb,

0:06:13 > 0:06:16with four bedrooms and a pool.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21They had set themselves a budget of around £230,000.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25However, Perth property prices had been rocketing for some years,

0:06:25 > 0:06:28creating a real challenge for Wayne and Jo-Ann.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36With high expectations to meet,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39the Manuels looked at three luxury Perth houses.

0:06:42 > 0:06:47Property one was a three-bedroom house with a spacious living area and study

0:06:47 > 0:06:51in the suburb of Queens Rocks, situated only two minutes from the beach.

0:06:51 > 0:06:56On the market at roughly £270,000 in 2007,

0:06:56 > 0:06:58it was a bit above their budget.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02To make this their dream home would have put their finances under real strain.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04Look at this!

0:07:04 > 0:07:07- Wow! That's nice, isn't it? - Yeah, it is, actually.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13- Look how everything kind of... - It's open, yeah.- If you're cooking,

0:07:13 > 0:07:16- you know what's going on. - It's a lovely setup.

0:07:18 > 0:07:24We've got Sienna. When she goes to bed, we need to be a bit quiet, and there's no doors or anything.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26- There's doors on the bedrooms. - I suppose so.

0:07:26 > 0:07:31Wayne didn't seem convinced by Australian open-plan living,

0:07:31 > 0:07:33but the rest of the house won him over.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38Oh, look at this! Sienna, come and have a look at this room.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Look what's in here.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44- Wow!- Oh, my goodness. - Isn't this a big room!

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Wow! And you've got a Jacuzzi, look!

0:07:47 > 0:07:52You could get naked in the Jacuzzi.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54- Oh...- Lovely.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58- I loved it.- Where do we start? It is a lovely home.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00It's nicely kept,

0:08:00 > 0:08:03it's very spacious living. I could see us

0:08:03 > 0:08:05living there.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09- It's not a problem at all. - No. Yeah. Really lovely.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Property one turned out to be a great start.

0:08:12 > 0:08:13But there was more to see.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Property two, a huge four-bedroom house

0:08:16 > 0:08:18in the desirable suburb of Maylands

0:08:18 > 0:08:24was on the market at around £475,000 in 2007.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26This was beyond their budget.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29But it was vital that they found the right home

0:08:29 > 0:08:33to make up for the heartache of leaving loved ones behind, whatever the cost.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36- Look at this, Sienna!- Look at that! It's lovely.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39- Jo-Ann!- Lots of space!

0:08:41 > 0:08:42That's a nice kitchen.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45I really like it. It's huge.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Well, compared to ours.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50Oh, this is nice.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52- You're joking!- Quite classy.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55What's...? Oh, this must be the...

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Oh! Walk-in wardrobes.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01This is just mine, I think.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03These windows are like...

0:09:03 > 0:09:06- They bring so much light in, don't they?- Wow!

0:09:06 > 0:09:09Wow! Would you like this to be your bedroom?

0:09:09 > 0:09:15And for Jo-Ann, the house seemed to offer the typical Aussie lifestyle they were desperately looking for.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17I think my ideal, dream Australian home

0:09:17 > 0:09:21has to have the barbecue, the area to eat and a swimming pool.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23This has got all three.

0:09:23 > 0:09:29House number three in the suburb of Atwell had three bedrooms, two bathrooms and all mod cons,

0:09:29 > 0:09:33It was on the market at £230,000.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37This house was the cheapest they'd seen, and they seemed to love it.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41But was it worth moving all the way to the other side of the world for?

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Quite nice study.

0:09:43 > 0:09:47Quite big, actually. And it's got a door on it. See, Wayne?

0:09:47 > 0:09:51- That's what I wanted - a door. Yeah, lovely.- Come on, Sienna.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53Let's see the rest of the house.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57This is a nice, relaxing area. Look at that!

0:09:57 > 0:10:00- Wow!- There you go.- Look at that!

0:10:00 > 0:10:05- So this is the front room - the first front room.- Oh!

0:10:05 > 0:10:06You didn't see that, did you?

0:10:06 > 0:10:11Do you like it here, Sienna? Lots of space, isn't it, for your little car?

0:10:11 > 0:10:13Look at this, Sienna, you'll love this.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16- Oh, my goodness! Look at this room! - Do you like this room?

0:10:16 > 0:10:21- Oh!- Yes, I thought so. It's a good size for a little nursery.- Yeah.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23- This looks like a bedroom. - This is the bedroom.

0:10:23 > 0:10:28- Wow!- This is bigger than the other one, isn't it?

0:10:28 > 0:10:32I actually prefer a walk-in like this to the cupboard.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35You get the clothes with it, as well!

0:10:37 > 0:10:42- Where's the bed?- There's the bed. Big bed, isn't it? Very big bed.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45- Look, Daddy.- It's a little pool.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48- It's small, isn't it? - It's like a Jacuzzi.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52It's nice. Are you sure it's not a pond?

0:10:52 > 0:10:58- Coming over to this wouldn't bother me at all. I'd be happy to come to a place like this.- Yeah.

0:10:58 > 0:11:03It's ideal, really. We've got a little bit of everything that we wanted.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06And maybe in a few years to come, we could afford

0:11:06 > 0:11:10a bigger place, or a place nearer the city, nearer the water,

0:11:10 > 0:11:12or anything like that, you know?

0:11:12 > 0:11:16I wasn't quite sure exactly what we could afford out here

0:11:16 > 0:11:23and especially thinking Perth would be cheaper than it actually is, I was quite nervous, really.

0:11:23 > 0:11:28I was imagining a little box here as well. It has got so expensive.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32But it obviously proves that we can afford something really nice out here.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34- Definitely. - That's good news, isn't it?

0:11:34 > 0:11:36Yeah. Where do we sign?

0:11:38 > 0:11:41Whilst properties one and two had impressed Wayne and Jo-Ann,

0:11:41 > 0:11:44both were more than they wanted to spend at the time.

0:11:44 > 0:11:50Property three was around the right price and seemed to have what they wanted for a family home.

0:11:50 > 0:11:55Did the Australian houses offer enough, or would they vote for UK properties?

0:11:55 > 0:12:03With Perth being so expensive at the minute, we weren't quite sure what we would be able to afford here.

0:12:03 > 0:12:08Having a look at properties today, I think we were pleasantly surprised that we can actually get

0:12:08 > 0:12:12something really nice, with some space and maybe even a pool.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16So, you know, based on our visits today...

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Lots of space, parks for the little ones to play with...

0:12:19 > 0:12:22- No.- No.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24Hold this. Look at this! SIENNA WAILS

0:12:24 > 0:12:26No, don't give it to her. SIENNA SQUEALS

0:12:26 > 0:12:28Wait. No.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30I think we vote for...

0:12:31 > 0:12:32BOTH: ..Australia.

0:12:36 > 0:12:41In 2007, Jo-Ann was the main visa applicant, so their Australian dream couldn't become a reality

0:12:41 > 0:12:43unless she found work.

0:12:43 > 0:12:49If it's easier for me to get work, it's looking at who's going to make more of the salary,

0:12:49 > 0:12:52then we might have to do a little bit of a swap there.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56Having put her career on hold to stay at home to look after Sienna,

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Jo-Ann hoped to return to recruitment consultancy.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03And so she went to check out her prospects.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09- Jo-Ann!- Hello, Andrew, nice to meet you.- The pleasure is all mine.

0:13:09 > 0:13:16In 2007, the job market in Perth was buoyant, so it looked as though her timing was perfect.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20We've only been open since the last week of May in Perth,

0:13:20 > 0:13:25and we thought it would be an opportune time to kick off here in Perth,

0:13:25 > 0:13:28because the mining and resources boom

0:13:28 > 0:13:33- has had a domino effect...- Has it? - ..on just about every industry you can think of.

0:13:33 > 0:13:37- OK, great.- Why don't we go to my office and have a chat

0:13:37 > 0:13:40- about some specifics and where you might fit in?- OK. - Excellent.- Good stuff.

0:13:40 > 0:13:45It was all looking positive, and Jo-Ann was keen to talk money.

0:13:45 > 0:13:50So does it work similar to the UK? Do you have a basic salary and then commission on top of that?

0:13:50 > 0:13:52It does work in a similar vein,

0:13:52 > 0:13:57although I like to say that, in terms of the base salary, I think the industry is very well-paying.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01You could definitely earn over...in three figures.

0:14:01 > 0:14:02- Wow!- Yeah.

0:14:02 > 0:14:07That was great news. If she met her targets, Jo-Ann would have earned more than £40,000

0:14:07 > 0:14:11and she and Wayne could afford their dream home.

0:14:11 > 0:14:17With Jo-Ann's salary not being guaranteed, Wayne was looking at ways of earning extra cash.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19I'm into music quite heavily back in the UK,

0:14:19 > 0:14:23so it would be interesting to see what the music scene has to offer here in Perth.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29DJ Aaron Kovalik has a regular slot at the Manor Club.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Hey.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34- How are you doing?- Hi. I'm Wayne.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36- How are you doing?- Not bad. - I do Saturday nights here.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40I don't know what you're into. This is hip-hop, funk,

0:14:40 > 0:14:43R&B - some of the kids get crazy with that Baltimore music.

0:14:43 > 0:14:48We get it pretty packed here. We get 200, 300 people every weekend.

0:14:48 > 0:14:53What if I said I'm going to give you an unpaid trial in front of 200 drunk Australian kids?

0:14:53 > 0:14:58- Could you try and hold it down? - As long as they're drunk, yeah! - If you're serious,

0:14:58 > 0:15:02- have a look at the equipment - check it out.- Yeah.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05DANCE MUSIC PLAYS

0:15:05 > 0:15:09Although DJing was Wayne's passion, it might have had to generate some income

0:15:09 > 0:15:11if they moved to Australia.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15Do you make a living out of playing this type of music in Perth?

0:15:15 > 0:15:21I do three or four nights a week. You won't make a million dollars, if that's what you're asking,

0:15:21 > 0:15:24but if you wanted to do it as well as something else,

0:15:24 > 0:15:28- you could definitely do it.- Cool. Thanks for showing us around. You've got a nice place here.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31- You're welcome. I appreciate it.- Thanks a lot.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34Coming from a busy London lifestyle,

0:15:34 > 0:15:38Wayne had been concerned that Perth would be too quiet for him to work as a DJ.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40Pleasantly surprised.

0:15:40 > 0:15:46So yeah, it's starting to build up a picture now, that maybe what I do, what I like, exists in Perth.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49So yeah, it's surprising. I didn't think it would.

0:15:49 > 0:15:55As the visa applicant, the family's future depended on Jo-Ann returning to a job in recruitment.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57But did she want to work in Australia?

0:15:57 > 0:16:03I'd say Perth definitely has a more laid-back approach to offer,

0:16:03 > 0:16:08with the whole life-work balance, which is definitely very appealing.

0:16:08 > 0:16:13I also think with the recent mining boom here, you can also make quite a lot of money here in Perth.

0:16:13 > 0:16:19So my choice for jobs would definitely be Australia.

0:16:23 > 0:16:28The Manuels had both started off very keen to make a better life down under.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30However, after a few days in Perth,

0:16:30 > 0:16:35Jo-Ann started to have doubts and the cracks began to show.

0:16:35 > 0:16:39I like the hustle I have to admit, although I do want to move out of London,

0:16:39 > 0:16:44I liked when I worked in London and the hustle and bustle of it. I like it being really busy -

0:16:44 > 0:16:46that's just me personally.

0:16:46 > 0:16:53- Hold on - so you like...you like the trains being stuffed, you like being late, expensive...- There's just...

0:16:53 > 0:16:58- 12-hour days.- ..something about walking down...something about Oxford Street at Christmas.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02All those people. I know it's a mad rush, but I love it. There's something about it.

0:17:02 > 0:17:07Although, for me personally, I would like something a bit more laid-back,

0:17:07 > 0:17:10I still want an element of it somewhere.

0:17:10 > 0:17:15I'm still not sure whether Perth is too laid-back and will never offer that, even in the slightest.

0:17:15 > 0:17:21That's in the days that you did work there, but now we've got a family, our view has changed a lot.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23We don't need that hustle and bustle.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26It's not what we want for Sienna, is it?

0:17:26 > 0:17:31- Or is it?- Um, maybe... Maybe a little bit.- All right.

0:17:31 > 0:17:35Wayne and Jo-Ann were feeling the weight of this massive decision.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38It could have been that Perth wasn't the right city for them.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41Or maybe that Australia wasn't even the right country.

0:17:41 > 0:17:46So they used every opportunity to find out more about the city wherever they went.

0:17:46 > 0:17:51- Hi.- Hi, there.- What's her name? - Sienna.- Sienna.- Hello, gorgeous.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53Aha.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55So what about a young family?

0:17:55 > 0:18:00What are the advantages of being in Perth with a young family?

0:18:00 > 0:18:04Well, we've got a fairly supportive network here, family support,

0:18:04 > 0:18:09but I find that there's so many people and they're really quite friendly.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13- Is there enough to do here? - It's certainly getting better.

0:18:13 > 0:18:19The population has increased, it's almost doubled over the last ten years.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22So you've got lots more people,

0:18:22 > 0:18:27lots more cultures that live here and more exciting things to do.

0:18:27 > 0:18:28It has got a good vibe.

0:18:28 > 0:18:34I can see why people wake up and are happy here but there still seems to be something missing.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37At this stage, I can't tell you what it is because I don't know myself.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41I don't know whether it's just that extra bit of something.

0:18:42 > 0:18:47- Just that buzz. - There is this laid-backness

0:18:47 > 0:18:51of Perth which is very holiday-mode.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54You go to somewhere, you relax, you kick back.

0:18:54 > 0:19:01Whether or not that would suit myself or Jo-Ann for good, 365 days a year, I'm not too sure.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05I'm looking round every corner, everywhere we drive,

0:19:05 > 0:19:09and I can't see it, so that's the only thing.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Serious doubts about Perth were creeping in.

0:19:12 > 0:19:16For Jo-Ann and Wayne, something was definitely missing.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18I think the whole family thing will hit me later.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21I don't know how they will cope if we do go.

0:19:21 > 0:19:26I think it would be really hard for them, especially with Sienna being their only grandchild.

0:19:26 > 0:19:31I think it would be so hard to wave goodbye to all those people.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34Now, it's just a dream but, although it would be a wonderful dream,

0:19:34 > 0:19:37I think there'll be heartache along the way as well.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42We've got that return ticket, so knowing that is very powerful.

0:19:42 > 0:19:47But I think once you get the one-way ticket, that's it. You've pressed the button.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52The decision to leave family and friends behind in the UK

0:19:52 > 0:19:55was the hardest they would ever have to make.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59The Manuels had to choose between sacrificing everything they held dear,

0:19:59 > 0:20:01and the dream of a better life.

0:20:01 > 0:20:05We've had a really good day today, experiencing Perth's lifestyle.

0:20:05 > 0:20:12We've got this constant backdrop, beautiful backdrop of the water, the sun, the sand, great parks.

0:20:12 > 0:20:18Without a doubt, our vote for lifestyle would have to be...Australia.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Australia.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23- Good girl!- Australia!

0:20:23 > 0:20:24THEY CHEER

0:20:28 > 0:20:35In 2007, we showed the Manuels some messages from their closest friends and family,

0:20:35 > 0:20:40to remind them just what they'd be leaving behind if they made the move to Australia.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50- Hi, guys!- Hope you're having a fantastic time

0:20:50 > 0:20:54in Oz. We miss you loads and can't wait to see you.

0:20:54 > 0:20:58Jo-Ann, she was our little princess

0:20:58 > 0:21:00in our house before Sienna came.

0:21:00 > 0:21:05She's a lovely, lovely daughter. We're a very close family.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07I'm the eldest, she's the youngest.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10We've had a close relationship since we were young.

0:21:10 > 0:21:14She's like my best friend. She IS my best friend and I love her to death.

0:21:14 > 0:21:18Wayne is a very quiet person, he keeps to himself.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20He's always there for you.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22He's there for me.

0:21:22 > 0:21:26I can't think of my little boy going away.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29We're quite a small family and we're quite close,

0:21:29 > 0:21:33so it's quite sad that Sienna will be going

0:21:33 > 0:21:37- but it's a fantastic opportunity, isn't it?- Yes.

0:21:37 > 0:21:42- We'll miss her, but we'll still see her because she's not miles away. - We'll miss her very much.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45I've got to take my hat off to them

0:21:45 > 0:21:48for actually getting up, because they've got a good life here.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50It's not like they're running away.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54They want a better future for Sienna and I can't knock them for that.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57I keep thinking it's a dream or it might not happen.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00If it does actually happen, then it will hit us,

0:22:00 > 0:22:05but I'll be positive all the way through. But with emotion as well.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07My heart did sink a bit.

0:22:07 > 0:22:12I was thinking ahead - "Oh, God, I won't see my son again." But I'll

0:22:12 > 0:22:13manage to

0:22:13 > 0:22:16put it behind me until the day.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19I love him very much.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24I am going to miss him very much.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27We'll miss you so much and wish you

0:22:27 > 0:22:31all the very best if you do decide to go. (Don't go!)

0:22:32 > 0:22:35Our love won't stop just like that.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38I'll be here for all three of you, Sienna, Jo-Ann and you, Wayne.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41So if you ever need me, I'm there.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43Good luck, my son and Jo-Ann.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45We love you to bits. Bye.

0:22:45 > 0:22:50Darling princess Sienna, we're missing you, darling.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54Our house is empty without you and your little voice.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00We send you our love. God bless you, darling,

0:23:00 > 0:23:04and come home safely. Bye.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09- Nanny gone.- Nanny's gone.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11That was really sad.

0:23:11 > 0:23:15- That was much sadder than I thought. - Yeah.

0:23:15 > 0:23:17Bye-bye.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20Imagine watching that a year after not seeing them.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24I think what I am happy about is that they all

0:23:24 > 0:23:27wish us well and want us... They see it as an opportunity for us.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30I feel a bit sad, really, after watching that.

0:23:30 > 0:23:31I didn't think I would.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33Why do you feel sad?

0:23:33 > 0:23:38Just because you're hearing people say goodbye to you, people close to you that you love.

0:23:38 > 0:23:42These aren't strangers, these are people we see every day.

0:23:42 > 0:23:43People close to us.

0:23:43 > 0:23:48You take that for granted, don't you? We spoke about this before.

0:23:48 > 0:23:53They're only around the corner and we take that for granted sometimes.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57Knowing now that they're not just ten minutes away is the thing.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01Yeah, that's it, really.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07- There you go. This one's ready to go. - Lovely. Cheers.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10- I'll put this in the car. - It's made it very real.

0:24:10 > 0:24:17I think, the actual realism of living here, missing family back home, will be spread over six months to a year.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20It's not something we're going to feel in a week

0:24:20 > 0:24:24but it puts it all into perspective, what this whole experience is about.

0:24:24 > 0:24:29Although there's lots of good, we are going to go through some tough times as well.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33When you come here and live day-to-day, that's going to be the tough stuff.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37When your family aren't here for a month and more.

0:24:37 > 0:24:42Jo-Ann and Wayne had to face up to the fact that moving to the other side of the world

0:24:42 > 0:24:44would affect their lives forever.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46It had been an emotional week

0:24:46 > 0:24:50and the reality of a potential move to Australia was beginning to hit home.

0:24:50 > 0:24:54Jo-Ann couldn't seem to shift her doubts.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58The trauma of leaving her family and friends in the UK was taking its toll.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00The crucial decision time had arrived.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08We've had a really fantastic week out here in Perth.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11Everything we've got to say about it can only be positive,

0:25:11 > 0:25:15a great lifestyle, beach, weather, houses, jobs.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18Potential to earn here is great as well.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21I personally had a few reservations about Perth.

0:25:21 > 0:25:25I'm not quite sure whether there's something missing here or not, however, I think,

0:25:25 > 0:25:29if you are going to emigrate, you need to be slightly open-minded.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31So I think our choice will have to be...

0:25:31 > 0:25:34BOTH: Australia!

0:25:38 > 0:25:45So, the family voted to move down under, but what happened next?

0:25:45 > 0:25:51We caught up with them a year later to find out if they'd actually made the move.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55The Manuel family from West Sussex

0:25:55 > 0:25:59had to put their dreams of emigrating to Australia on hold.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05When we met them again, in 2008, Jo-Ann was expecting their second child

0:26:05 > 0:26:10and the economic downturn in the UK meant they hadn't been able to sell their house.

0:26:11 > 0:26:17If they were still going to make the move, the emotional pain of leaving their large, close-knit family

0:26:17 > 0:26:20would have had to be faced all over again.

0:26:20 > 0:26:26I'm comforted by the fact that we're having a baby here and we've got that support network around us.

0:26:26 > 0:26:31Yeah. We have become quite dependant on the little things that we ask our parents for.

0:26:31 > 0:26:37I have to admit, I can't go a day without picking up the phone and speaking to Mum and Dad

0:26:37 > 0:26:41- and seeing them.- Yeah.- Maybe I won't have that in Australia

0:26:41 > 0:26:45and Wayne will be at work and I'll just be sitting at home, waiting for him to come back.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49At the moment, the focus is on the baby,

0:26:49 > 0:26:54so Australia has to be put on hold until Jo-Ann delivers.

0:26:59 > 0:27:05It's over two years since we saw the Manuels, and we've caught up with them again.

0:27:05 > 0:27:11Are they still in the UK or have they managed to move to Australia?

0:27:13 > 0:27:17Well, they're in Australia, but not Perth.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20They've moved to the more cosmopolitan city of Melbourne,

0:27:20 > 0:27:21capital of Victoria.

0:27:21 > 0:27:26They're staying with Wayne's Auntie Sheila and her husband, Bob, whilst they find their feet.

0:27:26 > 0:27:31And, as well as starting a new life, they have a new addition to their family -

0:27:31 > 0:27:35baby Jayden-Cruz. So how have they found it so far?

0:27:35 > 0:27:39- This is Bob. You've met Bob. - G'day. How are ya?

0:27:39 > 0:27:44- This is Paul, Nick. This is Wendy. - Hi.- This is Sue. All the kids -

0:27:44 > 0:27:48Ryan, James, Tessa, Chloe...and Mia. Sorry, and Mia.

0:27:48 > 0:27:54So it's my Auntie. Sue and Wendy are my cousins and it's their family's and their other halves

0:27:54 > 0:27:56and their kids.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58Bob and Sheila are sponsoring Jo-Ann and Wayne,

0:27:58 > 0:28:03which involves them paying a bond to the Australian government to cover possible welfare costs.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07This means they can move to Australia without having found work first.

0:28:07 > 0:28:12Risky, but the Manuels are confident they've made the right decision.

0:28:12 > 0:28:20We sold our house back in November '09 and I think that was the turning point

0:28:20 > 0:28:26that now, it's actually happening. And we're now living what we've been speaking about and, you know,

0:28:26 > 0:28:33- preparing for.- We discussed it and thought we could possibly keep the house on the market a bit longer,

0:28:33 > 0:28:38make a bit more money, or leave now, when the kids are young.

0:28:38 > 0:28:43Sienna's starting school soon and it just made more sense to get the kids settled and make the move now.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47- And also for us. As you get older, you get into a comfort zone.- Yeah.

0:28:47 > 0:28:51We were getting comfortable in the UK so it was kind of, "Let's do it now."

0:28:51 > 0:28:53- I think we've done the right thing. - Yeah.

0:28:53 > 0:28:58The first night we arrived, I cried myself to sleep

0:28:58 > 0:29:03because it wasn't holiday mode and I knew what we were here for and that I wasn't going back.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06I didn't think I'd feel like that, but then I woke up the next morning

0:29:06 > 0:29:10and we wrote a list of everything we had to do and got on with it.

0:29:10 > 0:29:12And it's been really good so far.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15We're initially looking forward to getting our own house,

0:29:15 > 0:29:18getting our bits in there, getting the kids settled,

0:29:18 > 0:29:23Sienna starting school, and then living out that lifestyle that we've dreamt of.

0:29:27 > 0:29:32They've managed to sort out a more permanent place to call home.

0:29:32 > 0:29:36Hopefully, it compares well to the houses they saw in Perth.

0:29:36 > 0:29:38- Lovely.- Congratulations, and enjoy.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41- Thanks a lot.- No problem.- Take care.

0:29:41 > 0:29:47Keys to their rental property in hand, the Manuels can hopefully start to settle in.

0:29:47 > 0:29:52Their new home is the windy western suburb of Melbourne, Point Cook.

0:29:52 > 0:29:56With its new-build modern properties, it's a haven for young families -

0:29:56 > 0:30:00the perfect place for the Manuels to start living their Australian dream.

0:30:02 > 0:30:04Here we go.

0:30:04 > 0:30:05Look at this!

0:30:05 > 0:30:09- Wow.- Have a look, Sienna. Wow.

0:30:09 > 0:30:13- Lots of space here. - It's going to be your new house!

0:30:13 > 0:30:16Look - we can fill this area with your toys.

0:30:16 > 0:30:21- Look. Do you like it?- He's gone straight for the stairs. - We need the stair-gate in, then.

0:30:21 > 0:30:22Straightaway.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25My dining table will fit in very nicely there.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28And our corner suite.

0:30:28 > 0:30:32- And the TV.- Yeah, corner suite will go there. TV.- Bit kitchen.

0:30:32 > 0:30:37- Like we wanted.- Yeah. Big kitchen, lots of cupboards.- Yeah.

0:30:37 > 0:30:42- It's good.- We haven't enough things to fill it.- We have, actually. Yeah.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45Do you like your big kitchen, Sienna?

0:30:45 > 0:30:49Oh, I don't know. Oh, this is the laundry room.

0:30:49 > 0:30:55- We need to do the washing.- Yes, put the washing machine in here.

0:30:55 > 0:31:01Oh, these are more cupboards. That's what we never had back home - enough cupboards. Loads of storage.

0:31:01 > 0:31:03Let's go upstairs, shall we?

0:31:03 > 0:31:09- Daddy! Daddy!- Yes, darling. Hold on. Let's look at this area first.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11- Mummy! You'll miss it! - Yeah, but look at all this space.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14- What will we put here? - Put your toys in here, can't we?

0:31:14 > 0:31:19Wow. We can definitely fill this with all your pink things, can't we?

0:31:19 > 0:31:26- There's really a big... - Well, we'll move that bed and put your pink bed in there.

0:31:26 > 0:31:30Once it arrives. And where do you want, Mr, shall we find your room?

0:31:31 > 0:31:35Well, that's Jayden-Cruz sorted.

0:31:35 > 0:31:37Let's go and see Mum and Dad's room.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39Wow.

0:31:39 > 0:31:42- Is that nice?- There's LOADS of pillows!- There are!

0:31:42 > 0:31:46Look what we've got - a little shower.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49Let's see from outside our window.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52Shall we pull it up? Do you want to look?

0:31:52 > 0:31:55Wow! Look!

0:31:57 > 0:32:01That's not a bad view at all! Plenty of space for the children to run around

0:32:01 > 0:32:04and enjoy the Australian sunshine.

0:32:07 > 0:32:08Oh, it's quite a big space.

0:32:12 > 0:32:14Yeah. Not bad. Outdoor area.

0:32:14 > 0:32:18Have the barbie here, the table and chairs there.

0:32:18 > 0:32:21- HE LAUGHS - The pool over there.

0:32:21 > 0:32:27- Do you think anything different of the place? Is it somewhere you'd like to move into, still?- Yeah.

0:32:27 > 0:32:31- I think it's lovely. Perfect for us, isn't it? For our first house.- Yeah.

0:32:31 > 0:32:35Lots of space for the kids, nice big kitchen, which we like.

0:32:35 > 0:32:38Bedrooms are nice. Just have to suss out the area.

0:32:38 > 0:32:40Yeah, just the area. Yeah.

0:32:40 > 0:32:44No. I'm pleased with it, too. I think it's everything that we could want.
