0:00:02 > 0:00:05Convincing the people you love to emigrate can be a very tough job,
0:00:05 > 0:00:08especially if they have serious doubts.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11And back in 2011, the Buchanan family faced a choice
0:00:11 > 0:00:14that could have split the family apart.
0:00:14 > 0:00:17So one year on, where are they now?
0:00:17 > 0:00:21The Buchanan's ideal Aussie home turned out to be a nightmare.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24Oh, God, there's a cockroach.
0:00:24 > 0:00:26- It's horrible.- Yeah.
0:00:26 > 0:00:29Their daughter was torn by the idea of moving.
0:00:29 > 0:00:31I suppose, one way or another,
0:00:31 > 0:00:34one parent's going to be heartbroke.
0:00:34 > 0:00:37And their friends didn't want them to leave.
0:00:37 > 0:00:41It's going to just break my heart to say goodbye to them.
0:00:41 > 0:00:45So one year later, were they able to hold on to their hopes
0:00:45 > 0:00:47of starting a new life Down Under?
0:01:09 > 0:01:13In 2011, the Buchanan family faced a huge decision -
0:01:13 > 0:01:15whether to leave their home and loved ones behind
0:01:15 > 0:01:18for a new start in Australia.
0:01:18 > 0:01:22We gave them a week to experience the reality of living Down Under.
0:01:22 > 0:01:25Today, we'll find out what's happened since we last met.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28The Buchanans' journey from Scotland to Queensland
0:01:28 > 0:01:32was a massive 10,000 miles and 24 hours.
0:01:32 > 0:01:36It had already got them worried about what they were taking on.
0:01:36 > 0:01:37It was tough.
0:01:37 > 0:01:39I don't think we could get used to that.
0:01:39 > 0:01:41Nobody could get used to that.
0:01:41 > 0:01:43If we make the decision to stay here,
0:01:43 > 0:01:47- then I think the visits back home would be limited.- Yeah.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Luckily it was only a short trip from the airport
0:01:49 > 0:01:51to their base for the week.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55Back in the UK, the Buchanans lived in Armadale,
0:01:55 > 0:01:56a small town near Edinburgh.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00There was Angie and husband Jason,
0:02:00 > 0:02:03along with Angie's son Jordan, who at the time was 18,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05her daughter Sophie, who was 13,
0:02:05 > 0:02:09and their baby son Jay, who was two.
0:02:09 > 0:02:10They'd been married for six years,
0:02:10 > 0:02:14but since the beginning, Jason had one dream for the family.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17I visited Australia about nine years ago,
0:02:17 > 0:02:21and ever since I met Angie I've wanted to go back.
0:02:22 > 0:02:26Unfortunately for Jason, Angie had very different ideas
0:02:26 > 0:02:28about where their future lay.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31I've never fancied going.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33I've always been -
0:02:33 > 0:02:35I'm Scottish, I stay in Scotland.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37This is where all my roots are.
0:02:37 > 0:02:38I like being a mum,
0:02:38 > 0:02:40having foundations for a family,
0:02:40 > 0:02:43whereas Jason would pack his bags and go tomorrow.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47However, concerns about the children's future
0:02:47 > 0:02:51had pushed Angie to finally consider Australia.
0:02:53 > 0:02:57We believe, after hours and hours of discussion,
0:02:57 > 0:03:00that it would be best for all of us in the family,
0:03:00 > 0:03:02in particular Jordan.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05I think Jordan would benefit the most out of everybody.
0:03:06 > 0:03:1118-year-old Jordan had several disabilities that needed extra care.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14Jason and Angie believed that a move to Australia
0:03:14 > 0:03:16could improve his life dramatically.
0:03:17 > 0:03:21Jordan flourishes in the summer.
0:03:21 > 0:03:25If we go on holiday, Jordan becomes a different boy altogether.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28The weather affects his joints and stuff like that,
0:03:28 > 0:03:31so his mobility, his posture.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33He really finds it difficult here.
0:03:33 > 0:03:34When it comes to wintertime,
0:03:34 > 0:03:38Jordan basically hibernates in a room in winter.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41We believe he has more potential than sitting in a room.
0:03:42 > 0:03:44Angie may have had her doubts,
0:03:44 > 0:03:48but it was her daughter Sophie who was most worried about moving.
0:03:48 > 0:03:52Out of the whole family she stood to lose the most.
0:03:52 > 0:03:54I don't fancy living in Australia at all.
0:03:55 > 0:03:59My biggest fear would be I would never see my little sisters,
0:03:59 > 0:04:04or my dad, or my friends, or stuff, ever again.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07So it would be quite upsetting to leave them, and stuff.
0:04:07 > 0:04:11It's hard, because I don't want Sophie leaving her family,
0:04:11 > 0:04:16her dad and her sisters, and the step family.
0:04:16 > 0:04:20But the thing with Sophie is, I'm trying to better her life for her,
0:04:20 > 0:04:22give her more opportunities.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25And I think when we go to Australia she'll flourish.
0:04:25 > 0:04:30So I need to make sure that Sophie's OK going to Australia.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32With a close family network,
0:04:32 > 0:04:37Angie and Jason were also aware of what they would be giving up.
0:04:37 > 0:04:39My biggest concern would be leaving my mum.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43We see her almost daily.
0:04:43 > 0:04:47Not only am I leaving her, but taking her grandkids away as well.
0:04:49 > 0:04:53Half of me feels that I should stay for family ties.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55My family mean the world to me.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58I have daily contact with them.
0:04:58 > 0:04:59I know they'll visit,
0:04:59 > 0:05:04but it's not the same as seeing them week-to-week.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07They had finally decided to give Australia a try.
0:05:07 > 0:05:09But with only one week to persuade his family,
0:05:09 > 0:05:11Jason knew the pressure was on.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14It's the two girls that we have to convince,
0:05:14 > 0:05:19to ensure this goes through, Sophie and Angie.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22Jason would be there tomorrow. It's his dream.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25But at the end of the day, it's not just Jason's choice.
0:05:25 > 0:05:28It's Jordan and Sophie and Jay's as well.
0:05:28 > 0:05:29It's a family thing.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36For their week in Australia,
0:05:36 > 0:05:39the Buchanans were staying in the Redcliffe area,
0:05:39 > 0:05:4020 miles north of Brisbane.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45Their base was a traditional Queenslander timber house.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48As it was Angie and the children's first experience of living
0:05:48 > 0:05:51in Australia, Jason knew it needed to make a good impression.
0:05:52 > 0:05:54Oh, this is big, Jay.
0:05:56 > 0:05:57Oh, this is a dining room.
0:05:59 > 0:06:01Oh, this is Jay's room.
0:06:01 > 0:06:02Oh, let me see.
0:06:03 > 0:06:05Cool.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08And that is Jordie's bed. This is bigger than your room, isn't it?
0:06:08 > 0:06:09- Aye.- Cool.
0:06:09 > 0:06:13That all sounded positive.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16But once they'd had a chance to unpack,
0:06:16 > 0:06:18there were a few second thoughts.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22First impressions of the house, very old-fashioned,
0:06:22 > 0:06:25definitely wouldn't be something that we would look at.
0:06:25 > 0:06:28Since we've got here it's not really blown me away
0:06:28 > 0:06:30as much as I thought it would.
0:06:30 > 0:06:35So I hope it opens up to me during the week.
0:06:35 > 0:06:39And after the first night, things had gone from bad to worse.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46When we came in yesterday, I don't think either one of us
0:06:46 > 0:06:48were completely happy with the house.
0:06:48 > 0:06:53But it just got worse, behind the surface the house was disgusting.
0:06:53 > 0:06:56We saw a mouse and that kind of scared me.
0:06:56 > 0:06:59So, like, as far as it goes for me,
0:06:59 > 0:07:03I'm not convinced at all that I would like to live here.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05It wasn't the best start to the Buchanans' week,
0:07:05 > 0:07:09and a blow for Jason's hopes of convincing them to emigrate.
0:07:11 > 0:07:15Hopefully a rapid relocation to a modern apartment free of visitors
0:07:15 > 0:07:19and right next to the beach would help raise everyone's spirits.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22This is nice.
0:07:22 > 0:07:24This is much better.
0:07:29 > 0:07:33Back in the UK, the family lived in a modern five-bedroom home.
0:07:33 > 0:07:35It was their pride and joy
0:07:35 > 0:07:36and they had strong ideas
0:07:36 > 0:07:39about what houses Down Under would need to offer.
0:07:39 > 0:07:41We need a four-bedroom house
0:07:41 > 0:07:44because of the different ages of the kids.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47Hopefully a newer-build house.
0:07:47 > 0:07:50The dream is to go there and have a nice standard of living,
0:07:50 > 0:07:54which in the first place equates to a nice house.
0:07:54 > 0:07:58They thought their house was worth around £180,000,
0:07:58 > 0:08:01and they could have a budget of £250,000,
0:08:01 > 0:08:04but they knew that finding somewhere they could all be happy with
0:08:04 > 0:08:05wouldn't be easy.
0:08:08 > 0:08:12We arranged to give the Buchanans a taste of Brisbane's housing market.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14We showed them three typical options
0:08:14 > 0:08:17based upon what they wanted from their ideal home,
0:08:17 > 0:08:19what they could afford,
0:08:19 > 0:08:21and the real price of property Down Under.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24After seeing what was on offer,
0:08:24 > 0:08:27we revealed to them just how much each house cost.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33The first stop was at this four-bedroom house in Scarborough,
0:08:33 > 0:08:3520 miles north of Brisbane.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37It was close to the beach and shops,
0:08:37 > 0:08:39but in need of renovation,
0:08:39 > 0:08:42which should have meant it was good value for money.
0:08:42 > 0:08:44Did the Buchanans like it?
0:08:46 > 0:08:49What's this? Ooh!
0:08:49 > 0:08:52A big cockroach up there.
0:08:52 > 0:08:56Eew! That's not a good start to any house viewing.
0:08:57 > 0:08:59It's horrible.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02Oh, God, there is a cockroach!
0:09:02 > 0:09:05This is the living area.
0:09:05 > 0:09:06Living area?!
0:09:06 > 0:09:09It's just strange, I cannae get my head round it.
0:09:09 > 0:09:10It wasn't any better upstairs,
0:09:10 > 0:09:14but Jason did have an idea on how to improve things.
0:09:14 > 0:09:16If anything was to be done with this house,
0:09:16 > 0:09:19I think it needs knocked down... and rebuilt.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22What about little Jay? He seemed pretty relaxed?
0:09:22 > 0:09:24- Do you like this house?- No.
0:09:24 > 0:09:29OK, then. This house was definitely not the starched Jason wanted
0:09:29 > 0:09:32and that was before they'd even found out its price.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36Was their budget of £250,000
0:09:36 > 0:09:39enough to cover the property and renovation costs?
0:09:39 > 0:09:43- No way.- £217,000.
0:09:43 > 0:09:44- No chance.- No chance.
0:09:44 > 0:09:48Totally surprised how much this is valued.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51I just think it's so run-down.
0:09:51 > 0:09:55You'd need to spend that to get it up to the standard.
0:09:55 > 0:09:56It might have been affordable,
0:09:56 > 0:10:00but this house has got Jason's dream off to the worst possible start.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04The second house, also in Scarborough,
0:10:04 > 0:10:07had four bedrooms and was close to the waterfront.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10For Jason, it really needed to impress.
0:10:10 > 0:10:13Look at that, Jay!
0:10:13 > 0:10:15SHE GASPS Wow!
0:10:15 > 0:10:19- This is more like what we were... looking for.- I love it.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22The pool was an ideal start, but they had yet to set foot indoors.
0:10:22 > 0:10:26- That's nice.- This is lovely. - Oh, wow, look at that.
0:10:26 > 0:10:32- The layout's spot-on.- It's lovely. - It's lovely.- Absolutely love it.
0:10:32 > 0:10:33I love the ceiling.
0:10:33 > 0:10:35I love the windows.
0:10:35 > 0:10:37Just the whole layout is perfect.
0:10:37 > 0:10:40This was music to Jason's ears.
0:10:40 > 0:10:41Is this Jordie's room?
0:10:41 > 0:10:44We'd need to get this decorated for you, wouldn't we?
0:10:44 > 0:10:46You'd get everything in here.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48Do you think this would be the perfect size for you?
0:10:48 > 0:10:52This house had done a far better job of impressing the Buchanans
0:10:52 > 0:10:54than the first,
0:10:54 > 0:10:56but did its price keep up the good work?
0:10:58 > 0:11:00So this is the price of this house.
0:11:00 > 0:11:01Ready?
0:11:03 > 0:11:05£365,000.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08- I would say that was definitely... - Worth it.- ..at the very limit
0:11:08 > 0:11:11of what we could afford...I think.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14It looked like Jason's hopes of moving his family were on the up,
0:11:14 > 0:11:16but the price wasn't ideal.
0:11:18 > 0:11:22Could the final house convince everyone without breaking the bank?
0:11:23 > 0:11:26It was a four-bedroom new-build in North Lakes,
0:11:26 > 0:11:30slightly closer to central Brisbane, but as it was 15 minutes inland,
0:11:30 > 0:11:33it should have offered more value for money.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37This is lovely. But I cannot see how we could afford this.
0:11:37 > 0:11:41- Wow.- Love it.- This is nice.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44This is nice.
0:11:44 > 0:11:48And for me, this ticks all the boxes.
0:11:48 > 0:11:52This would be my dream home. There's a pool.
0:11:52 > 0:11:56- Never mind the pool, look at the barbecue.- Unbelievable.
0:11:56 > 0:12:00Mum and Dad were convinced, but did the rest of the family agree?
0:12:00 > 0:12:06I think I would consider moving... if this was our house.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08Much to Jason's relief,
0:12:08 > 0:12:11this house seem to offer everything the Buchanans wanted.
0:12:11 > 0:12:14But was the dream house just that,
0:12:14 > 0:12:17or could it be a real possibility?
0:12:17 > 0:12:21350,000. It's cheaper.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24I can't believe that this is cheaper than the other house.
0:12:24 > 0:12:26It's kind of shocked me.
0:12:26 > 0:12:28With this being more modern, newer,
0:12:28 > 0:12:31I thought it would be more expensive.
0:12:32 > 0:12:34That was great news for Jason's dream,
0:12:34 > 0:12:39but at £100,000 over budget, it came with a big price tag.
0:12:39 > 0:12:42The Buchanans had seen three different properties
0:12:42 > 0:12:45and after a disappointing start to the day,
0:12:45 > 0:12:49what was their verdict now on houses in Australia?
0:12:50 > 0:12:53Australia.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56Well done.
0:13:03 > 0:13:06In the UK, Angie was working in social care,
0:13:06 > 0:13:09but she wanted to get back to her original profession
0:13:09 > 0:13:11if they moved to Australia.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15Ideally, my main aim is to go back into children's nursing,
0:13:15 > 0:13:17because I'm a qualified children's nurse.
0:13:17 > 0:13:20It was Angie's qualifications that held the key to getting a visa,
0:13:20 > 0:13:24but she knew that moving would involve a sacrifice from her
0:13:24 > 0:13:26to afford the lifestyle they wanted.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30I don't want to be working full-time.
0:13:30 > 0:13:32But I do understand that I might have to
0:13:32 > 0:13:34for the sake of the children.
0:13:34 > 0:13:36But in an ideal world,
0:13:36 > 0:13:39two days a week would be great, to go back into nursing.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42The whole move rested on her shoulders,
0:13:42 > 0:13:45so we arranged for Angie to visit Brisbane's Redcliffe Hospital
0:13:45 > 0:13:48to get a feel for working in Australia.
0:13:48 > 0:13:52- Hiya.- Hello, I'm Emma from paediatrics. How are you doing?
0:13:52 > 0:13:54- Nervous.- You'll be all right.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57Come with me, we'll go up to the children's ward.
0:13:58 > 0:14:01While Angie got to see the hospital,
0:14:01 > 0:14:03Jason took the children to the park.
0:14:04 > 0:14:05If they did emigrate,
0:14:05 > 0:14:09he'd look after them while they settled before finding work.
0:14:09 > 0:14:12Back home, I own my own business,
0:14:12 > 0:14:14dealing with office technology.
0:14:14 > 0:14:18In particular, photocopiers, printers and scanners.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21However, coming to Australia, at this stage,
0:14:21 > 0:14:23I wouldn't have any ambition
0:14:23 > 0:14:26to start up my own company coming over here.
0:14:26 > 0:14:29I think it would be wise to find employment
0:14:29 > 0:14:32and see where that goes.
0:14:32 > 0:14:36Back on the ward, Emma was putting Angie's bedside manner to the test.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38Did she still have what it takes?
0:14:38 > 0:14:41I might just introduce you to Callum.
0:14:41 > 0:14:46Hiya. And what did you do?
0:14:46 > 0:14:50- Someone fell on top of me. - Can we see your arm?- Wow.
0:14:50 > 0:14:53- Your friends wrote on it?- Yes.
0:14:53 > 0:14:55While Angie was back in a familiar routine,
0:14:55 > 0:14:57Sophie was thinking about a new life
0:14:57 > 0:14:59and what that could mean in Australia.
0:14:59 > 0:15:02It's been really good since we're here, surprisingly.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05I didn't think it would be as good as it has been.
0:15:05 > 0:15:08I think the thing that's most pushed me towards Australia now
0:15:08 > 0:15:12is just being here and experiencing it for yourself,
0:15:12 > 0:15:16it's not like a holiday, it's actually somewhere you could live.
0:15:16 > 0:15:18But she still had a long way to go
0:15:18 > 0:15:21before she could choose where her future lay.
0:15:21 > 0:15:25I think the hardest thing for me would be leaving my dad
0:15:25 > 0:15:27and my sisters and my stepmum, and I think...
0:15:29 > 0:15:31I try not to think about it, to be honest.
0:15:40 > 0:15:44Back at the hospital, Angie was getting down to business with Emma.
0:15:44 > 0:15:48At home I work part-time, so what is the vacancies for part-time staff?
0:15:48 > 0:15:50- Most of my staff are part-time. - Oh, right.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53It's the minority that are full-time.
0:15:53 > 0:15:56So it's a great work-life balance.
0:15:56 > 0:16:00Are there vacancies available?
0:16:00 > 0:16:02We don't have any vacancies at the moment,
0:16:02 > 0:16:05but with six beds opening at the beginning of next year,
0:16:05 > 0:16:08I'll have eight full-time positions.
0:16:08 > 0:16:12Thank you. When it comes to salaries, what is, like, a full-time employee
0:16:12 > 0:16:13and what's the part-time?
0:16:13 > 0:16:15Depending on your experience
0:16:15 > 0:16:18and where you would sit on the pay scale,
0:16:18 > 0:16:23as a registered nurse, you could earn anywhere from 58,000-78,000,
0:16:23 > 0:16:25at the top end of the scale.
0:16:25 > 0:16:26That's great.
0:16:26 > 0:16:31Jason wouldn't want to work if that was the case.
0:16:31 > 0:16:34That definitely sounded like good news.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37It meant she could have a starting pay of £37,000
0:16:37 > 0:16:40if she was prepared to work full-time.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44Today's been very, very positive.
0:16:44 > 0:16:48I feel a lot calmer, a bit excited actually, to be honest with you.
0:16:48 > 0:16:52Angie's prospects looked good, so how did she vote?
0:16:52 > 0:16:54Australia.
0:16:56 > 0:16:57For me, as the main applicant,
0:16:57 > 0:17:01I feel that I've got no worries getting a job.
0:17:01 > 0:17:05It's been a very pleasant experience today.
0:17:09 > 0:17:13Back in the UK, Jason and Angie lived in a five-bedroom house,
0:17:13 > 0:17:16which they had lovingly renovated.
0:17:16 > 0:17:18They believed it was worth £180,000
0:17:18 > 0:17:22and would need to raise every penny they could towards the move.
0:17:22 > 0:17:24We sent round two estate agents
0:17:24 > 0:17:27to get us their opinion on their house in Armadale.
0:17:27 > 0:17:29Whose house is that?
0:17:30 > 0:17:31Very nice room.
0:17:31 > 0:17:35One decorative wall, which is quite loud, not everyone's taste,
0:17:35 > 0:17:37but that can be changed.
0:17:37 > 0:17:39Ha!
0:17:42 > 0:17:45Bedroom on the lower level, that's always handy to have.
0:17:45 > 0:17:47It's been a garage conversion,
0:17:47 > 0:17:49which does add value to your property.
0:17:51 > 0:17:54Shh! Wallpaper. Let's see.
0:17:55 > 0:17:59Good-sized room. Nice, tasteful decoration.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02It's not cluttered at all.
0:18:02 > 0:18:04- What room are we going up to now?- Wow.
0:18:05 > 0:18:07This is lovely.
0:18:07 > 0:18:10- Thank you.- Justin fan, obviously.
0:18:10 > 0:18:13Even on the light switch! Amazing.
0:18:13 > 0:18:14In the current market,
0:18:14 > 0:18:16there are quite a few on the market in the area
0:18:16 > 0:18:19and there is a bit of competition for the property.
0:18:19 > 0:18:20But typically,
0:18:20 > 0:18:24I would expect it to sell for £170,000-£175,000.
0:18:24 > 0:18:29In my opinion, I reckon this house should achieve about 185.
0:18:29 > 0:18:31About 180,000 for a quick sale.
0:18:31 > 0:18:35That should be achievable at a fixed price.
0:18:35 > 0:18:37That was more or less what they expected,
0:18:37 > 0:18:40but even if they used all their savings and equity
0:18:40 > 0:18:43on the move to Australia, was it going to be enough?
0:18:43 > 0:18:47We prepared a breakdown of their everyday living costs
0:18:47 > 0:18:50to see if they could afford the life they dreamt of Down Under.
0:18:50 > 0:18:53Look at the size of the mortgage.
0:18:53 > 0:18:56Mortgage repayments, 1,811.
0:18:56 > 0:19:00So the mortgage payment has doubled.
0:19:00 > 0:19:03So in terms of outgoings,
0:19:03 > 0:19:06we're just slightly more than we would be back home.
0:19:06 > 0:19:11However, our salaries have increased quite substantially,
0:19:11 > 0:19:13which means we're far better off here.
0:19:13 > 0:19:16- We're quids in.- Quids in.
0:19:18 > 0:19:22We were thinking possibly when it came to the calculations,
0:19:22 > 0:19:26everything, putting it together, we were a bit worried, or apprehensive.
0:19:26 > 0:19:31That it wouldn't go our way, and that we wouldn't have the opportunity.
0:19:31 > 0:19:32And that might be the first thing
0:19:32 > 0:19:34that would put some doubt in our minds,
0:19:34 > 0:19:36whether it was the right move or not.
0:19:36 > 0:19:39But...it's went the other way, to be honest.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43Angie and Jason had worked out
0:19:43 > 0:19:45they would be a lot better off in Australia
0:19:45 > 0:19:48if they both worked full-time,
0:19:48 > 0:19:49so how did they vote?
0:19:52 > 0:19:54Australia.
0:19:56 > 0:19:58Australia.
0:20:08 > 0:20:11Jason and Angie hope that Australia would offer Jordan
0:20:11 > 0:20:14the independence and outdoor life he thrived in.
0:20:15 > 0:20:21I think both of us firmly believe Jordan's got more potential in him.
0:20:21 > 0:20:25But I think that the two of us would like Jordan to have a wee job.
0:20:25 > 0:20:27Have his own life.
0:20:27 > 0:20:31He is kind of secluded to his wee self
0:20:31 > 0:20:36and he doesn't have any communications with anybody.
0:20:36 > 0:20:38And as a mum it's worrying,
0:20:38 > 0:20:42because you don't want everything that you've done for your son,
0:20:42 > 0:20:44for him to waste away.
0:20:44 > 0:20:47So we arranged for them to visit Cascade Place,
0:20:47 > 0:20:50a day centre for adults with a range of disabilities.
0:20:50 > 0:20:53- Welcome, guys.- Hi there, how are you doing? I'm Jason.- G'day, Jason.
0:20:53 > 0:20:56- This is Jordan.- G'day, Jordan. How are you, mate?
0:20:56 > 0:20:59Come on through, guys. Welcome.
0:20:59 > 0:21:01This is nice and colourful.
0:21:01 > 0:21:04Everything that you see in this room here has been made here
0:21:04 > 0:21:05by the artists of the place.
0:21:05 > 0:21:08So I'll take him for a bit of a wander through the building
0:21:08 > 0:21:10and show you some of the ways we do it
0:21:10 > 0:21:13and a couple of the other things that we've got.
0:21:13 > 0:21:16Through here, we have a recording studio,
0:21:16 > 0:21:18- where we have Chris and Kieran and Jeremy.- Hey, guys.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21Jordan, I know you're interested in music.
0:21:21 > 0:21:23There was a whole range of activities
0:21:23 > 0:21:26that Jordan could pick from whenever he wanted.
0:21:26 > 0:21:29This dress pattern actually was donated to us,
0:21:29 > 0:21:33the pattern itself, but we make the inserts, they're all unique.
0:21:33 > 0:21:37Everything that's made here, you can't reproduce it,
0:21:37 > 0:21:40so all the guys here, and others on other days,
0:21:40 > 0:21:42make that insert and we sew it here
0:21:42 > 0:21:43and we sell them all.
0:21:43 > 0:21:47We have exhibitions at galleries on a regular basis,
0:21:47 > 0:21:51but we also have arrangements with local coffee shops
0:21:51 > 0:21:52and places on the waterfront,
0:21:52 > 0:21:56where they're happy to display it and sell it for us.
0:21:56 > 0:21:59But it wasn't just about arts and crafts for Jordan,
0:21:59 > 0:22:03Angie and Jason's dream was for him to become more independent.
0:22:04 > 0:22:09All I've ever wanted was for Jordan to be seen as a person,
0:22:09 > 0:22:13not as a figure or a number, or just somebody with special needs.
0:22:13 > 0:22:15But be identified as Jordan.
0:22:15 > 0:22:19Geoff Trappett from Queensland Cerebral Palsy League,
0:22:19 > 0:22:21was able to address their concerns.
0:22:21 > 0:22:25What's really important for us is how we can progress Jordan
0:22:25 > 0:22:28and find the right activities or workshops
0:22:28 > 0:22:31that's going to take him into adulthood.
0:22:31 > 0:22:34It's about building those skills up
0:22:34 > 0:22:37- to be able to move on to the next age.- Definitely.
0:22:37 > 0:22:41Do you get involved in employment opportunities for them?
0:22:41 > 0:22:44Our job is to help Jordan with whatever his goals are.
0:22:44 > 0:22:48So if that's to get work, then that's what we can work on.
0:22:48 > 0:22:52It all sounded really positive, but Jason had one final question.
0:22:52 > 0:22:55Would yous assist in getting Jordan a girlfriend?
0:22:55 > 0:22:58- That would be easy, I reckon!- No!
0:22:58 > 0:23:00No, thank you.
0:23:00 > 0:23:03We might have a conversation without Mum around, hey?
0:23:03 > 0:23:04Erm...
0:23:06 > 0:23:09Had the Buchanans heard enough?
0:23:09 > 0:23:12I was really impressed with the centre
0:23:12 > 0:23:14and what they've got to offer children like Jordan
0:23:14 > 0:23:18and actually believe that what they're trying to promote
0:23:18 > 0:23:19that they really do promote it.
0:23:19 > 0:23:22- I think Jordan would really benefit. - I feel a lot better.
0:23:22 > 0:23:24I feel a lot more confident.
0:23:24 > 0:23:29From one association that we've spoken to,
0:23:29 > 0:23:31I think Jordan would excel.
0:23:31 > 0:23:35That seems to have answered a lot of Angie's concerns
0:23:35 > 0:23:39and Jason's dream of Australia seemed one step closer.
0:23:43 > 0:23:45Before their final vote,
0:23:45 > 0:23:47the family had to face the reality
0:23:47 > 0:23:50of leaving behind the people they loved.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52While little Jay had a nap,
0:23:52 > 0:23:55they watched some messages from friends and family back home.
0:23:56 > 0:24:01- Hi, guys.- Hello, guys. Hope you're having a great time in Australia.
0:24:01 > 0:24:03Angie and Jason are made for each other,
0:24:03 > 0:24:06they totally bounce off each other.
0:24:06 > 0:24:09Every weekend they've always got a plan for the kids.
0:24:09 > 0:24:11Every weekend.
0:24:11 > 0:24:13Not just the school holidays.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16They're lovely kids.
0:24:16 > 0:24:22It's going to just break my heart to say goodbye to them.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25If you do decide to move to Australia, I will miss you loads,
0:24:25 > 0:24:27because we've been friends for so many years
0:24:27 > 0:24:29and all the stuff we've been through,
0:24:29 > 0:24:32all the laughs and all the sad bits that we've had
0:24:32 > 0:24:35and I'll really miss them, and I'll really miss you too.
0:24:35 > 0:24:37If you do decide to go,
0:24:37 > 0:24:39It's going to rip us up a bit,
0:24:39 > 0:24:41because you're my wee sister.
0:24:41 > 0:24:44My nephew, my nieces,
0:24:44 > 0:24:48it's just going to kind of rip us up a little bit.
0:24:48 > 0:24:51I think they're doing the right thing.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54I know for a fact he loves me to bits.
0:24:54 > 0:24:57Just as long as they're happy, that's all that matters.
0:24:57 > 0:25:00Jason, I've always said to you,
0:25:00 > 0:25:04if an opportunity comes up in any way,
0:25:04 > 0:25:07go for it, and I still say, "Go for it."
0:25:07 > 0:25:12I think it's the best decision the two of you could make
0:25:12 > 0:25:14for the family and you.
0:25:23 > 0:25:26Do you want a cuddle, Jordan?
0:25:26 > 0:25:32It has been made a lot more real that we might actually go.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37We'll just need to wait and see.
0:25:38 > 0:25:41Seeing messages from home was painful
0:25:41 > 0:25:44and with Angie and Sophie falling for Australia,
0:25:44 > 0:25:46had it put the move back in the balance?
0:25:48 > 0:25:50Even Jason was starting to have doubts.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56I've always been the one driving this,
0:25:56 > 0:26:00but it's been pretty overwhelming this week, thinking, you know,
0:26:00 > 0:26:03reality is starting to kick in.
0:26:03 > 0:26:06And obviously I'm leaving my mum...
0:26:06 > 0:26:09which is going to be tough,
0:26:09 > 0:26:11especially with the age she's at.
0:26:11 > 0:26:13For Angie, the week had shown her
0:26:13 > 0:26:16what Australia could mean for Jordan.
0:26:16 > 0:26:20The last few days, Jordan's just excelled
0:26:20 > 0:26:23in his personality and talking to people and just...
0:26:26 > 0:26:30He's just fascinated with what's going on around about him.
0:26:30 > 0:26:32And it's great.
0:26:32 > 0:26:36But she knew the final decision was going to be far from simple.
0:26:36 > 0:26:42This week's experience has kind of turned everybody's life upside down.
0:26:42 > 0:26:44From a family's point of view,
0:26:44 > 0:26:48this is going to be one of the toughest decisions we've got to make,
0:26:48 > 0:26:51because it's not just me and Jason's choice.
0:26:53 > 0:26:56It was time for the Buchanans to make their final vote.
0:26:56 > 0:27:00It's been a great week, lots of new experiences,
0:27:00 > 0:27:02loads of vital information,
0:27:02 > 0:27:06and we're now ready to vote UK or Australia.
0:27:12 > 0:27:13- Australia.- Australia.
0:27:13 > 0:27:15I'm not sure.
0:27:18 > 0:27:21Four out of five ain't bad.
0:27:21 > 0:27:24Having faced the ups and downs of life in Australia,
0:27:24 > 0:27:27it seemed the move wasn't quite in the bag.
0:27:33 > 0:27:36'A few weeks after the Buchanans returned from Australia,
0:27:36 > 0:27:39'I went to see if anything had changed.
0:27:39 > 0:27:42'First, I caught up with Sophie.'
0:27:42 > 0:27:44So, Sophie, for you it is different,
0:27:44 > 0:27:48because you do have your dad back in Scotland with your stepmum
0:27:48 > 0:27:52and your sisters as well, who I know you're very close to.
0:27:52 > 0:27:55- And it hasn't been easy, has it? - No, it hasn't been easy at all.
0:27:55 > 0:27:56It's horrible for me
0:27:56 > 0:28:00having to decide if I should leave them or leave my other family,
0:28:00 > 0:28:02and it's just horrible thinking about it
0:28:02 > 0:28:06and it did make me feel really guilty.
0:28:06 > 0:28:09But then I think I would benefit a lot from going over there.
0:28:09 > 0:28:10Since I've been back, they're like,
0:28:10 > 0:28:12"No, you should go, because it's better."
0:28:12 > 0:28:16You've got their blessing, which is so, so important.
0:28:16 > 0:28:20So if I gave you a flag now, which way would you vote?
0:28:20 > 0:28:23I think I would vote Australia.
0:28:23 > 0:28:24- Yeah?- Yeah.
0:28:24 > 0:28:28If your mum and stepdad could hear you now, they'd be cheering!
0:28:28 > 0:28:32And speaking of Angie and Jason, they had some news too,
0:28:32 > 0:28:34but this time it wasn't so positive.
0:28:34 > 0:28:36There's been a few things popped up,
0:28:36 > 0:28:40that maybe we were slightly naive before we went.
0:28:40 > 0:28:42Such as?
0:28:42 > 0:28:44The biggest thing that we overlooked
0:28:44 > 0:28:48- was the concerns of getting a visa for Jordan.- Right.
0:28:48 > 0:28:50To cut a long story short,
0:28:50 > 0:28:53it seems it's going to be very, very difficult
0:28:53 > 0:28:54to obtain a visa for Jordan
0:28:54 > 0:28:57due to his learning difficulties.
0:28:57 > 0:29:00If anything was to happen to myself or Angie when we we're in Australia,
0:29:00 > 0:29:04the first question the Australian government are going to ask is,
0:29:04 > 0:29:06- "Could Jordan live independently?" - Right.
0:29:06 > 0:29:09So we're striving the now to push him forward
0:29:09 > 0:29:10to do the daily living skills,
0:29:10 > 0:29:14giving him the responsibility of making food,
0:29:14 > 0:29:16washing, domestic stuff.
0:29:16 > 0:29:20So Jordan knows that for him to go to Australia, he needs to work hard too.
0:29:20 > 0:29:24We've always believed that Jordan has the potential
0:29:24 > 0:29:27to live independently in the future and things like that.
0:29:27 > 0:29:30- So this has just maybe been a big push.- Push for us, yeah.
0:29:30 > 0:29:34So it is difficult... we've got to be honest,
0:29:34 > 0:29:37to secure a visa for someone like Jordan,
0:29:37 > 0:29:40- but you think you can overcome that? - Yeah, absolutely.
0:29:40 > 0:29:43We still firmly believe we've got a chance of getting to Australia.
0:29:43 > 0:29:46We would like to be in Australia by next summer.
0:29:51 > 0:29:54With everyone finally on board, the Buchanans were determined
0:29:54 > 0:29:57to press on with their Australian dream.
0:29:57 > 0:30:00But, one year later, was it any closer to becoming a reality?
0:30:00 > 0:30:07It's June 2012 and Jason, Angie, Jay, Jordan and Sophie
0:30:07 > 0:30:08are living in...
0:30:09 > 0:30:11..Scotland.
0:30:11 > 0:30:15Although still in the UK, the whole family are now working together
0:30:15 > 0:30:19to face the challenges and make the move to Australia.
0:30:19 > 0:30:23The Buchanans fell in love with the dream of a new life Down Under,
0:30:23 > 0:30:25with benefits for everyone.
0:30:26 > 0:30:30Within day two, Angie said to me she wanted to move to Australia,
0:30:30 > 0:30:32which was pretty surprising.
0:30:32 > 0:30:36Um...I always knew Angie would take to it and like it.
0:30:36 > 0:30:38But I didn't think it would be that fast.
0:30:38 > 0:30:40'Angie's really driving it now.
0:30:40 > 0:30:42'It was always my dream.
0:30:42 > 0:30:44'It's as much Angie's dream now as it is mine.'
0:30:44 > 0:30:47'When we first went to Australia, it was just everything was bright,
0:30:47 > 0:30:50'everything was happy, people were happy.
0:30:50 > 0:30:54'I mean, the lifestyle's so different to what we've got.
0:30:54 > 0:30:56'The people are just so relaxed.'
0:30:56 > 0:30:58There didn't seem to be any...
0:30:58 > 0:31:02negativity towards Jordan's learning disabilities.
0:31:02 > 0:31:05You don't get people staring and making comments
0:31:05 > 0:31:07and I think for me, as a mum,
0:31:07 > 0:31:11seeing Jordan being able to just walk down the street was quite a thing,
0:31:11 > 0:31:14and people not always pointing or staring, it's just great,
0:31:14 > 0:31:18because he's a wee individual, just like everybody else.
0:31:18 > 0:31:22- SOPHIE:- 'When we first got to Australia, I was quite nervous.
0:31:22 > 0:31:25'But after a few days of being there, I started to really like it.'
0:31:25 > 0:31:28I think there was a lot of pressure when I first got there,
0:31:28 > 0:31:31because I knew how much Jason wanted to go.
0:31:31 > 0:31:33But I think being there and looking at it,
0:31:33 > 0:31:37I think it was better for me, personally.
0:31:37 > 0:31:41The family have faced many obstacles over the past year,
0:31:41 > 0:31:44but are more determined than ever and refuse to give up now.
0:31:46 > 0:31:49When we initially found out about the visa
0:31:49 > 0:31:53and Jordan maybe not being eligible, we were all just a bit shocked.
0:31:53 > 0:31:58- Um...- Crushed. - But we immediately...
0:31:58 > 0:32:00We started looking into it.
0:32:00 > 0:32:04We looked elsewhere, at different websites, different forums,
0:32:04 > 0:32:06taking advice and things.
0:32:06 > 0:32:09It's still not clear-cut, still not 100%.
0:32:09 > 0:32:13But we don't see any reason why, you know,
0:32:13 > 0:32:17even if, initially, Jordan got rejected on medical grounds.
0:32:17 > 0:32:18There's ways around it.
0:32:18 > 0:32:20Yeah, you just have to keep challenging them.
0:32:22 > 0:32:26Jordan has also been working hard to help the family move Down Under.
0:32:27 > 0:32:30He's taken some positive steps by learning new skills
0:32:30 > 0:32:32that he could use in Australia.
0:32:34 > 0:32:37'Since we came back from Australia, Jordan's done a college course
0:32:37 > 0:32:40'and it's to promote his independence.
0:32:40 > 0:32:44'It is not so much on the academic side, it's more personal skills,
0:32:44 > 0:32:47'learning about money, computer awareness.
0:32:47 > 0:32:49'He's very...computer aware.'
0:32:49 > 0:32:52- 'Cooking. - Cooking, which he loves.
0:32:52 > 0:32:55'Photography is one of his new skills that he's learned.'
0:32:55 > 0:32:57But also just...
0:32:57 > 0:33:01socialising, they do a lot of social activities together.
0:33:01 > 0:33:04- 'And the class is a nice size.- Yeah.
0:33:04 > 0:33:08'I think a lot of it's promoting his confidence,
0:33:08 > 0:33:11'his self-confidence, his speaking to other people,
0:33:11 > 0:33:15'in addition to learning independent living skills.'
0:33:15 > 0:33:18'He's doing a project just now.'
0:33:18 > 0:33:22And he's doing his on Australia. So he's coming home and he's asking.
0:33:22 > 0:33:26'So that's nice, that he's coming in and saying, "Mum...
0:33:26 > 0:33:30' "Where did we go? What was that called?"
0:33:30 > 0:33:32'Before, we never got that.'
0:33:32 > 0:33:35And the benefits are clear to see for the family.
0:33:36 > 0:33:40He's also started a volunteer job on a Friday.
0:33:40 > 0:33:42And...he just comes...
0:33:42 > 0:33:45He's only there for an hour or two and he comes home
0:33:45 > 0:33:48and he just springs into the house and he's got these big, shiny eyes.
0:33:48 > 0:33:52Um, and he loves it, he absolutely loves it.
0:33:52 > 0:33:56'It's been brilliant, seeing Jordan starting a job,
0:33:56 > 0:33:59'albeit it's only for a few hours at this stage,
0:33:59 > 0:34:02'because it just backs up our initial thoughts
0:34:02 > 0:34:05'that Jordan could keep learning and progressing.'
0:34:05 > 0:34:09It's great to see and, you know, we're not going to stop at that.
0:34:09 > 0:34:11We're going to keep pushing him and pushing him,
0:34:11 > 0:34:13so hopefully he can just continue to develop.
0:34:13 > 0:34:15- My boy's grown up!- Yep.
0:34:23 > 0:34:25As the main visa applicant, it was Angie's skills
0:34:25 > 0:34:29as a paediatric nurse that would provide the family with a visa.
0:34:29 > 0:34:32She needed to complete a course in order for this to happen.
0:34:32 > 0:34:36I've done my Return To Nursing, which included an essay
0:34:36 > 0:34:42and 150 hours of practical on a ward, a children's ward.
0:34:42 > 0:34:44I've also had to keep on my own job.
0:34:44 > 0:34:47So it's been pretty tough going.
0:34:47 > 0:34:50The main things that kept me going is the fact that
0:34:50 > 0:34:54I genuinely want to go back to nursing,
0:34:54 > 0:34:56whether it was here or in Australia.
0:34:56 > 0:35:02But just to have the fact that... this is for Australia, um...
0:35:02 > 0:35:04and that I would be the main applicant
0:35:04 > 0:35:08and hopefully secure a job, no bother, for the five of us.
0:35:08 > 0:35:12Um...that's what gave me my drive.
0:35:12 > 0:35:15The quickest way to get to Australia would be the sponsored visa.
0:35:15 > 0:35:21Once we find a sponsor, the process can be turned around in ten days.
0:35:21 > 0:35:26That sounds like a big ask, which I know it is.
0:35:26 > 0:35:28However, with the work that we've done,
0:35:28 > 0:35:34we've found out that there is a lot of hospitals looking for nurses.
0:35:34 > 0:35:36Jason is also doing his bit.
0:35:36 > 0:35:39He's decorating the house, ready to put it on the market,
0:35:39 > 0:35:43and is planning a trip to Australia to look for work and a new home.
0:35:43 > 0:35:48I've spoken to several companies in Brisbane and Sydney and even Perth,
0:35:48 > 0:35:53in terms of recruitment and I've had quite good feedback from that.
0:35:53 > 0:35:56Hence, I've got half a dozen job interviews in two weeks' time,
0:35:56 > 0:35:58when I go over to Australia,
0:35:58 > 0:36:00in the same line of work that I do just now,
0:36:00 > 0:36:04so office technology - photocopiers, printers, that type of thing.
0:36:04 > 0:36:07Um, but if I get there and, you know...
0:36:07 > 0:36:10I see something else, I'd be quite open for that.
0:36:10 > 0:36:14And it's not just finding work that's keeping the Buchanans busy.
0:36:14 > 0:36:17There are many elements involved in moving your family
0:36:17 > 0:36:18to the other side of the world.
0:36:20 > 0:36:24'The plans for the next few months doesn't get any easier.
0:36:24 > 0:36:28'We've got a house to decorate, we've got to get the house up on sale.'
0:36:28 > 0:36:30We'll have medicals.
0:36:30 > 0:36:34We'll have English tests.
0:36:34 > 0:36:37So the next few months is just putting our head down
0:36:37 > 0:36:40and working even harder than what we have for the last three months.
0:36:40 > 0:36:43Jason is tying up loose ends in the UK,
0:36:43 > 0:36:45their much-loved house being one of them.
0:36:45 > 0:36:47He's meeting with Sheena Cunningham,
0:36:47 > 0:36:50who valued the house originally, to discuss their options.
0:36:53 > 0:36:54How can I help you?
0:36:54 > 0:36:58Just really want to find out would it be better to sell
0:36:58 > 0:37:03- or would it be better to hang out and rent the property?- OK.
0:37:03 > 0:37:05How much time have you got? Have you got a date for going away?
0:37:05 > 0:37:08- No, not yet.- You don't, OK.
0:37:08 > 0:37:10But we're hoping in the next two or three months.
0:37:10 > 0:37:13We certainly could sell your house, I don't know how long that would take.
0:37:13 > 0:37:15But you have got time on your hands.
0:37:15 > 0:37:18Or, indeed, we could look at a rental for you.
0:37:18 > 0:37:21And that's certainly another good option.
0:37:21 > 0:37:23In terms of renting,
0:37:23 > 0:37:26would you have any idea of what we'd be able to achieve?
0:37:26 > 0:37:31Yeah, for your property, we'd be looking at £900 per month.
0:37:31 > 0:37:35If they can't sell the UK home, then renting is a possibility,
0:37:35 > 0:37:38and they have their eye on a familiar property in Australia.
0:37:39 > 0:37:42We look at houses every second day on the internet,
0:37:42 > 0:37:47so we've got a fair idea of what we want, what we can afford.
0:37:47 > 0:37:49And, in fact, the second house that we looked at
0:37:49 > 0:37:53when we were in Australia, we found out it was still up for sale.
0:37:53 > 0:37:55And when I visit Australia in a couple of weeks' time,
0:37:55 > 0:37:57I'm going to go and speak to the owner
0:37:57 > 0:38:00and see if he would be interested in renting it to us
0:38:00 > 0:38:03for the first six months to a year.
0:38:04 > 0:38:08Although the Buchanans are full steam ahead on the move,
0:38:08 > 0:38:10Sophie has always been the one with the most doubts.
0:38:12 > 0:38:18Sophie's still in the kind of, "Are we going? When? Maybe. If."
0:38:18 > 0:38:22But I think, until something is in concrete or a date's set,
0:38:22 > 0:38:27then Sophie will not really take to...that she's going.
0:38:27 > 0:38:29When we came back, I did really want...
0:38:29 > 0:38:33Like, I fell in love with Australia and I really did want to go back.
0:38:33 > 0:38:36But I think the reality of it has sunk in when we did get back.
0:38:36 > 0:38:39I've just kind of been a bit on edge since.
0:38:39 > 0:38:43My main worry is just my wee sisters, my dad, stepmum
0:38:43 > 0:38:47and my friends and people back here, you know?
0:38:47 > 0:38:50It's quite scary to think about leaving them all.
0:38:50 > 0:38:55She's been spending a lot of time with her dad and her sisters.
0:38:55 > 0:38:58Because, obviously, they know that there is a only a limited time
0:38:58 > 0:39:00that we're going to be here. Um...
0:39:00 > 0:39:03And no doubt she will be very sad when she leaves.
0:39:03 > 0:39:08My dad and my sisters and my stepmum have been really good about it,
0:39:08 > 0:39:10telling me I should go for it,
0:39:10 > 0:39:13but my wee sister's, like, she's just that age
0:39:13 > 0:39:15when she's kind of realising what's happening
0:39:15 > 0:39:17and she does say stuff like, "Don't go,"
0:39:17 > 0:39:19but I suppose she'll just need to...
0:39:19 > 0:39:23Like, if I do go, I just need to keep lots of contact.
0:39:23 > 0:39:26It will be difficult for her, I'm sure it will be sad,
0:39:26 > 0:39:29but we'll just need to be there and support her through that,
0:39:29 > 0:39:33you know, that initial week or month, whatever it takes.
0:39:33 > 0:39:35It's going to completely change my life,
0:39:35 > 0:39:37everything from the wee-est to the biggest things,
0:39:37 > 0:39:40it's just going to change it completely.
0:39:40 > 0:39:44Whether that be in a good way or a bad way, I don't know yet!
0:39:45 > 0:39:48Leaving friends and family was always going to be hard,
0:39:48 > 0:39:51but for Jason, things were made even more difficult
0:39:51 > 0:39:53after some terrible news.
0:39:53 > 0:40:00Last November, my mum was watching the kids, Jordan and Jay, overnight,
0:40:00 > 0:40:05and she's just suddenly become unwell and, a day later, died.
0:40:05 > 0:40:10So that was all, you know, really sudden, that that happened
0:40:10 > 0:40:14and, obviously, had a horrendous effect on us all.
0:40:14 > 0:40:17Jason was heartbroken.
0:40:17 > 0:40:18But it's just...
0:40:23 > 0:40:28It's just given us a kind of nod on the head, almost as if...
0:40:29 > 0:40:32Australia's what we're supposed to be doing,
0:40:32 > 0:40:35because there's nothing to stop us, there's nobody holding us back.
0:40:35 > 0:40:38For Jason, it was a devastating blow,
0:40:38 > 0:40:41but he has since learned to take positives from it.
0:40:42 > 0:40:45With my mum dying, it meant that...
0:40:46 > 0:40:51..on a personal basis, I didn't have anything left, family-wise, here.
0:40:51 > 0:40:53Um...
0:40:53 > 0:40:56So, you know, once we...
0:40:57 > 0:41:00..moved on from that, there was no...
0:41:00 > 0:41:04there was going to be no emotional ties for me left in Scotland.
0:41:04 > 0:41:08Obviously, I do have aunties and uncles that I'm close to,
0:41:08 > 0:41:11but again they support us all the way anyway.
0:41:11 > 0:41:14It was great, knowing that my mum gave us the full backing
0:41:14 > 0:41:15to go to Australia,
0:41:15 > 0:41:18should we have wished to do that, when she was alive.
0:41:18 > 0:41:20So that was reassuring, anyway.
0:41:22 > 0:41:24And my mum always said that anyway,
0:41:24 > 0:41:28if we're going to go and it was going to better our lives
0:41:28 > 0:41:31and especially the kids' lives, then we should go for it,
0:41:31 > 0:41:32so that was good to know.
0:41:38 > 0:41:40Each one of the Buchanan family are working hard
0:41:40 > 0:41:43to reach their goal of a new life in Australia.
0:41:44 > 0:41:47And, working together, the dream is in sight.
0:41:50 > 0:41:51'The future for us is...
0:41:51 > 0:41:56'The way I see it, in ten years' time, Jay, Jordan and Sophie
0:41:56 > 0:41:59'will be fully-fledged Australian citizens, as we will be.'
0:41:59 > 0:42:03Jay running up and down the beach, Jordy selling his cakes at the shop.
0:42:03 > 0:42:06Sophie married to a surfer dude.
0:42:06 > 0:42:10'And we'll be sampling the life that we've dreamed of in Australia.
0:42:10 > 0:42:14'We can think of nothing that would stop us going to Australia.
0:42:14 > 0:42:19'And we believe that every one of us, individually, it will benefit.
0:42:19 > 0:42:21'If you were to turn around and say,'
0:42:21 > 0:42:25"We'll not be there until next year or six months down the line,"
0:42:25 > 0:42:28that would probably be really disappointing.
0:42:28 > 0:42:30'We want to go in the next two or three months.'
0:42:30 > 0:42:32'I'm not going to say...'
0:42:32 > 0:42:35going to Australia, and deciding to emigrate is easy
0:42:35 > 0:42:37and just a walk in the park, it's not.
0:42:37 > 0:42:39There's ups and downs and roundabouts, but...
0:42:40 > 0:42:43..it's full steam ahead for us and that's it!
0:42:45 > 0:42:47So, after some tough times at home,
0:42:47 > 0:42:51the Buchanans still had their sights set on moving down under.
0:42:51 > 0:42:53And I wonder if next time we meet them,
0:42:53 > 0:42:55it'll be on the other side of the world.
