0:00:02 > 0:00:06If you were desperate to spend more time with the people you love,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08would you consider going to the

0:00:08 > 0:00:09other side of the world to achieve it?

0:00:09 > 0:00:14In 2013, John Woodland spent a week in Australia, hoping to

0:00:14 > 0:00:19persuade his wife and daughter to make it their permanent home.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Today we'll find out if he succeeded.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25Years working away from home had taken a heavy

0:00:25 > 0:00:28toll on John Woodland's family life.

0:00:28 > 0:00:33I understood why he had to go away but it was just horrible.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37Desperate for more time with them, he hoped Australia was the answer.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40This is my dream, this is, love, to be home every single day

0:00:40 > 0:00:42and spend time with you.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44But daughter Chloe was unsure about moving,

0:00:44 > 0:00:47and wife Kerry wasn't willing to leave her behind.

0:00:47 > 0:00:52I don't physically feel that I could leave her in this country

0:00:52 > 0:00:55and move over with just me and John.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57So one year after the family's trial week,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59have they gone ahead and made the move?

0:00:59 > 0:01:03My hopes for the future for all of us is that we're all happy.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28Australia offers the chance of an ideal

0:01:28 > 0:01:33family life to more than 35,000 Brits who emigrate there each year.

0:01:33 > 0:01:38With its mild climate and beautiful beaches it's easy to see why.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40But, it doesn't work out for everyone -

0:01:40 > 0:01:44for many, the dream ends back where it started.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Missing out on family life,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49John Woodland was convinced a move down under would give him

0:01:49 > 0:01:53the time he desperately needed with his wife and daughter.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57One year ago, he had a week to try and persuade them

0:01:57 > 0:02:01a move to Australia was worth giving up their lives in the UK.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05Today we'll find out if the family have achieved the dream life

0:02:05 > 0:02:07John was chasing.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10A lengthy delay in London meant the Woodland's

0:02:10 > 0:02:15trial week in 2013 started in Perth much later than scheduled,

0:02:15 > 0:02:19and the marathon journey of over 10,000 miles had taken its toll.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Our flight was very, very long.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25It was very, very tiring.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28But everyone was still raring to go.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31Now we're here, you know, it's not just talking and maybe,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33it's going to be making our mind up time.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Just to see really what Australia's got to offer

0:02:36 > 0:02:42and what my dad has been bragging about and if it is for me, really.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45I'm quite excited about the whole thing at the moment,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47so let the adventure begin, I say.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Ahead was a week which could change their lives forever.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56The Woodlands were from Gwent in South Wales.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00They were John, Kerry, and daughter Chloe, then 19.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02Australia had been on John's mind

0:03:02 > 0:03:06since an army posting 17 years previously.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10I thought, "What a beautiful country, so laid back, so relaxed."

0:03:10 > 0:03:14When John returned from Australia he was really excited about what

0:03:14 > 0:03:17he'd experienced out there, and for a long while after that he did say,

0:03:17 > 0:03:18you know, it's something that we

0:03:18 > 0:03:20should perhaps think about in the future.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23John had been an HGV driver in the army.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26On leaving the forces, a lack of jobs left him with no choice

0:03:26 > 0:03:28but to continue with that career.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33But time spent on the road had meant long spells away from home.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37I've had sole responsibility for Chloe's... Bringing Chloe up,

0:03:37 > 0:03:42for looking after the house, for doing everything, really, that

0:03:42 > 0:03:45normally a family would do together, I've done everything alone.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49And providing for his family meant he'd completely missed

0:03:49 > 0:03:50out on Chloe's childhood.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57Not being able to see him through the week, not, like, him

0:03:57 > 0:04:02being able to see me grow up and be who I am today, really.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06She's missed so much and I've missed so much not being with her.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08It was a painful situation,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11but John thought a move down under could be the answer.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16My perfect outcome in Australia would be to find a job where

0:04:16 > 0:04:20I am working 6 till 4 or 4 till 6, whatever hours it is,

0:04:20 > 0:04:23but being home every single day to spend more time with my family.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27John and Kerry both felt Australia

0:04:27 > 0:04:30could offer Chloe a much better future.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34I work in a chip shop.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38I go to college and I do nail technology.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40I would like her to experience more out of life than

0:04:40 > 0:04:43living in a small town and spending all her days here.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46It's the opportunities which she could have over there.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49But while Chloe could see some appeal in moving far

0:04:49 > 0:04:53away from home, it would mean saying goodbye to her boyfriend.

0:04:53 > 0:04:59I've been with Sam for around a year now. Don't really want to lose him.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02And leaving Chloe wasn't an option for Kerry.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05If Chloe decided that she wouldn't want to

0:05:05 > 0:05:08live in Australia, I think that the whole idea, really, would just

0:05:08 > 0:05:12be forgotten because I don't physically feel that

0:05:12 > 0:05:16I could leave her in this country and move over with just me and John.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20I do feel a bit pressured in to going a bit.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24John had just one week to convince Chloe

0:05:24 > 0:05:28and Kerry his dream of a better life down under was worth giving

0:05:28 > 0:05:29up their lives in the UK.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40The Woodlands were spending their trial week in Perth,

0:05:40 > 0:05:42the country's fastest-growing major city.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46With less than 5% unemployment, it was a popular

0:05:46 > 0:05:50destination for new arrivals seeking a fresh start down under.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54It was late - and dark -

0:05:54 > 0:05:56when the family arrived at their temporary home.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Hopefully it wouldn't disappoint.

0:05:59 > 0:06:00Quite big, isn't it?

0:06:00 > 0:06:02I like the open plan, I like the kitchen

0:06:02 > 0:06:04and the living area all together.

0:06:04 > 0:06:05Quite a big telly, isn't it?

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Put the kettle on, love!

0:06:07 > 0:06:10John was settling in nicely but Chloe wasn't so keen.

0:06:10 > 0:06:11It's nice...

0:06:11 > 0:06:13I just don't think it's nothing compared

0:06:13 > 0:06:15- to what we've got back home.- No.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17It wasn't the start John was hoping for

0:06:17 > 0:06:21but what they could see outside did look more promising.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23- Oh, this is nice, John.- Is it?

0:06:23 > 0:06:24It's got a glass roof.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28- Massive out here.- I know.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32As everyone settled in, John knew he'd have to work hard

0:06:32 > 0:06:35if he was to convince his wife and daughter to make the move.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39This could give us an opportunity of a lifetime

0:06:39 > 0:06:42but at the end of the day I won't force my wife

0:06:42 > 0:06:45and my daughter to do something they wouldn't want to do.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47The whole point of coming is to hopefully make

0:06:47 > 0:06:50a decision that we all agree on, but obviously

0:06:50 > 0:06:53if that doesn't happen then we are back to the drawing board.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02Back in the UK, home for the Woodlands was a three-bedroom

0:07:02 > 0:07:04terraced house in Tredegar in Gwent, South Wales.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06The area's very pretty.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09We have a lot of countryside and mountains and I feel that if we

0:07:09 > 0:07:13move to Australia we would probably like to live in one of the suburbs.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17We'd like that nice community feel that we have here in Tredegar.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Just like meet people and get the old barbecue stuff

0:07:20 > 0:07:22and things like that, isn't it, really?

0:07:22 > 0:07:24I know that Chloe would love to have a pool

0:07:24 > 0:07:27but I think the most important thing is that it's just a family home

0:07:27 > 0:07:30and just somewhere that you're happy.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33The Woodlands planned to rent in Australia.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36We showed them three properties, based on what

0:07:36 > 0:07:40they could afford, their ideal home, and something in between.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42First up was a modern three bedroom house in the seaside

0:07:42 > 0:07:44town of Trinity.

0:07:44 > 0:07:4635 minutes' drive north of Perth's city centre,

0:07:46 > 0:07:50it could have offered the family the community feel they were after.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Oh, look at that. It's nice, isn't it?

0:07:59 > 0:08:01- Wow.- Ours is lovely, Chloe.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04This is really nice. This would be my room.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07- This would be your room. - Would it really?- Yeah.

0:08:07 > 0:08:08It was looking good.

0:08:08 > 0:08:10There you are, Chloe, this is your wardrobe.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Oh, man. Look at that.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Chloe's always wanted a walk-in wardrobe.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22And Kerry was loving the open-plan design.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24This is lovely.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26- This is really nice. - It is, isn't it?

0:08:26 > 0:08:27I quite like all the glass.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30The room is really light and airy.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33It feels nice and sunny and bright.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35But the garden wasn't ideal.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38It's not a very big garden though, Kerry, is it?

0:08:38 > 0:08:40You've got the beach literally opposite.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41You have got the outside space

0:08:41 > 0:08:43so you wouldn't be just confined to your garden.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47Right, Chloe I think this one might be your room after all.

0:08:47 > 0:08:48Chloe seemed sold.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50I really like this house.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53I think it's a lot better than our house back home.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56It's plenty big enough for the three of us.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58With the day off to a positive start,

0:08:58 > 0:09:00John should have been pleased.

0:09:00 > 0:09:05But was this house within their £1,250 a month rental budget?

0:09:09 > 0:09:11- Shall we have a look? - Shall we?

0:09:11 > 0:09:12Go on, then, Chloe.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17£1,210 pounds a month.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19That's about what we planned on really, wasn't it?

0:09:19 > 0:09:22That's not too bad at all. That would be manageable, I think.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24If we could afford a house like this or we could get a house like this

0:09:24 > 0:09:27on that sort of money, if we can get the jobs over here, then...

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Brilliant, really pleased with that price.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31Won you over yet, Chloe?

0:09:31 > 0:09:32A little.

0:09:33 > 0:09:34Yes!

0:09:37 > 0:09:40The next property was a stylish four-bedroom home.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43It was located in Tapping - 20 miles north of Perth

0:09:43 > 0:09:46but only five minutes from the amenities of the nearby

0:09:46 > 0:09:49town of Joondalup and close to the beach.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Oh, this is lovely, isn't it?

0:09:55 > 0:09:58Oh, this is like a little study.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Should imagine it's a nice street where you get to

0:10:00 > 0:10:01meet your neighbours.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03You know, everyone's quite close by.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05That could have meant the location was right

0:10:05 > 0:10:08and John spotted another potential upside.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10That's not going to be a walk-in wardrobe, is it?..

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Go and have a look.

0:10:14 > 0:10:15Shock horror.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17Go on, then, that's nice

0:10:17 > 0:10:19That's lovely. It's huge, Chloe.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21That was one box ticked.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23And then you've got the en-suite.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Oh, wow. This is lovely.

0:10:28 > 0:10:29- This is 'wow', isn't it?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31There's no other word for it, is there?

0:10:31 > 0:10:34You can't explain it, it's absolutely beautiful.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38The house had plenty going for it

0:10:38 > 0:10:41but there was one feature Kerry wasn't too keen on.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43The only thing I didn't like about

0:10:43 > 0:10:45this room is the pool table in the middle.

0:10:45 > 0:10:46Not an issue for John!

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- No, I think that's all right. - You like it. You don't mind it.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52- That can stay there, can't it, Chlo? - Yeah, we like that.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55It was all going well until Chloe spotted a problem.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57This is small.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Yeah, but it's nice, though, isn't it? It's big enough.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05Outside was one feature which could have brought her round.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10It's just luxury, isn't it, having a hot tub sat in the garden there.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14I like the garden but I just...

0:11:14 > 0:11:17- Don't get the right feel for it. - Don't like the house itself.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20I just don't think it's...

0:11:20 > 0:11:22- Not for you? - Not for me, no.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25Even with a hot tub, this house wasn't wowing Chloe.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28But John and Kerry could see some appeal.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32I think this house is lovely. I think it's got a lovely size.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35It's got plenty of bedrooms if people come to stay.

0:11:35 > 0:11:36It is a nice house.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38I wouldn't have any qualms with living here.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41But was it somewhere they could afford to call home?

0:11:44 > 0:11:46What do you reckon?

0:11:46 > 0:11:47Don't know, no idea.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Cheaper than the last place or dearer?

0:11:49 > 0:11:51No, probably a lot more expensive.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54It was almost £200 a month over budget.

0:11:54 > 0:11:55But....

0:11:55 > 0:11:57- Oh!- Not much dearer.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01I was expecting this to be hugely, if not double, the last one.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03It's a good price, isn't it?

0:12:03 > 0:12:06- But you still don't like the house? - I still don't like the house.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09With two properties down, the pressure was on to find

0:12:09 > 0:12:12somewhere the whole family would move around the world for.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16The final viewing was also in the Tapping area.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19With four bedrooms, this house should have offered the space

0:12:19 > 0:12:21and comfort the family wanted.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25- That's a nice little garden, John. - It is, isn't it?

0:12:25 > 0:12:26Little bit of a driveway.

0:12:28 > 0:12:29Nice, John, isn't it?

0:12:29 > 0:12:32- This is lovely, isn't it? - I do like this, yeah.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36Decorated really nice, aren't they?

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Ah, it's nice and big.

0:12:38 > 0:12:39It looked promising

0:12:39 > 0:12:42and the bathroom was an improvement on the last property.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44Do you think this is bigger?

0:12:44 > 0:12:45- Yeah, a lot bigger.- Do you?!- Yeah.

0:12:47 > 0:12:48Oh, dear me.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Oh, this is nice, isn't it? Lovely.

0:12:50 > 0:12:55Why have you always got walk-in wardrobes and I haven't got either.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59The master bedroom had another attractive feature.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01- We've got our own private porch. - That's private, yeah.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04Ah, that's really nice, yeah.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07Kerry sitting down with her orange juice in the morning.

0:13:07 > 0:13:08But there was a slight problem.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10I might have to get rid of the plants

0:13:10 > 0:13:12or trim them back a little bit.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14- Cos you're scared of spiders. - Scared of spiders.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16What? A big Welshman like you John?!

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Oh, this is nice.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22This is huge. It's almost like two separate living areas,

0:13:22 > 0:13:24three separate living areas.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27- Look at the size of the kitchen. - The kitchen's absolutely massive.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Outside was a feature which appealed to everyone.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32What's out there?

0:13:32 > 0:13:33HE LAUGHS

0:13:33 > 0:13:34Nice big fridge, oh, and a pool!

0:13:39 > 0:13:41This is nice, isn't it? This is lovely, isn't it?

0:13:41 > 0:13:43And, again, it's undercover which is perfect.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46You even got sides, John, that you can pull down.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50So had the Woodlands found their dream home?

0:13:50 > 0:13:53It's everything I would like if I moved to Australia.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56I actually haven't got anything negative to say about it.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59- Good girl.- No, I know.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03The house was a hit with the whole family.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05But was the price right?

0:14:05 > 0:14:08Do you reckon it will be more or less?

0:14:08 > 0:14:09- Oh, definitely more. - Do you think so?

0:14:09 > 0:14:11I reckon it might be even.

0:14:11 > 0:14:12No, I think it's a lot more expensive.

0:14:12 > 0:14:15I don't think it's something you could afford at this point.

0:14:15 > 0:14:16- Are you ready?- Go on.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21That was more than £400 over budget.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24- Yeah, it's quite high.- £1,667.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26But Kerry was optimistic.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29Surprisingly, it's cheaper than I thought it would be.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33I did think it would be a lot more than that, definitely.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36I wouldn't want second best so I would work hard

0:14:36 > 0:14:39and then get something like this, I would.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42So what had the Woodlands made of Perth properties?

0:14:45 > 0:14:47The first house had been within budget

0:14:47 > 0:14:49but the size of the garden let it down.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53Property number two was somewhere Kerry and John could call home

0:14:53 > 0:14:56but Chloe hadn't been convinced.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59And the final house had the wow factor

0:14:59 > 0:15:01but also a price tag to match.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05So had they seen enough to persuade them

0:15:05 > 0:15:07to give up their home in the UK?

0:15:07 > 0:15:11Based on the properties we've seen today we are voting for...

0:15:23 > 0:15:27- Australia.- Australia.- Australia.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29- Why did you vote for it? - So why did you vote Australia?

0:15:29 > 0:15:31Because I think the houses over here

0:15:31 > 0:15:33- are a lot better than the ones in the UK.- I'm the same.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36I don't think you can deny the fact that the houses are lovely.

0:15:36 > 0:15:40- And then seeing house three, that just nailed it for me.- Yeah.

0:15:40 > 0:15:41- Yeah.- Australia.

0:15:41 > 0:15:42Absolutely - well done, girl!

0:15:42 > 0:15:45It was a perfect start for John.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47With Kerry and Chloe both choosing Australia,

0:15:47 > 0:15:50his dream had taken a step forward.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00If the family were to make the move, it was crucial John

0:16:00 > 0:16:02and Kerry found the jobs to fund it.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04Kerry was the main visa applicant.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07Back in the UK she was an experienced midwife.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12I've been a midwife for seven years.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15I've enjoyed the job even though it can be very, very stressful

0:16:15 > 0:16:17and demanding,

0:16:17 > 0:16:21and I do feel that going to a new trust in a new area,

0:16:21 > 0:16:23a new country would be quite daunting.

0:16:25 > 0:16:29We arranged for Kerry to spend some time at Joondalup Health Campus -

0:16:29 > 0:16:32a local private hospital with a brand-new maternity wing.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35I'm a little bit nervous about this today, just going into, sort of,

0:16:35 > 0:16:38an environment that I'm not familiar with but also excited

0:16:38 > 0:16:42to find out what the possibilities could be for me in the future.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46It was John's job in the UK that had driven him towards emigrating.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48My cab is my apartment for the week.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51It's where I live all week. I sleep there.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53I've been doing it for eight years.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56I'm gone on a Monday, coming home on a Friday.

0:16:56 > 0:17:00He was hoping working in Australia would give him the time

0:17:00 > 0:17:02with his family he so desperately wanted.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07To find out about his work options, he met Dean Hewitt,

0:17:07 > 0:17:11a driving recruitment expert who was also from the UK.

0:17:11 > 0:17:16The licence you have is fully transferable into Australia.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19- So is there much opportunities for me, then, is there?- Absolutely.

0:17:19 > 0:17:23It can take maybe a week or two and once you've got your driving

0:17:23 > 0:17:27licence, you should be ready to be in full-time employment.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29It seemed opportunities could exist

0:17:29 > 0:17:32but what about the hours and salary?

0:17:33 > 0:17:36You would be home of an evening

0:17:36 > 0:17:39and we work with you closely to advance your skills.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42You could be expecting to earn

0:17:42 > 0:17:46between 80,000 and 100,000 per year.

0:17:46 > 0:17:4880,000 to 100,000 per year?!

0:17:48 > 0:17:5180,000 to 100,000 working an average of a 50-hour week,

0:17:51 > 0:17:52Monday to Friday.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55Phew - I'm well happy with that.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58That was a potential 50% increase in salary with

0:17:58 > 0:18:00regular hours.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03Back at the hospital, Kerry was keen to find out from unit manager

0:18:03 > 0:18:06Sandy if her prospects were as promising.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14Job prospects for you, absolutely fabulous, and reviewing your CV

0:18:14 > 0:18:18and what you could bring to the table, absolutely wonderful again.

0:18:18 > 0:18:19Great to have you on a team.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22What type of salary would I be looking at earning?

0:18:22 > 0:18:25OK, for the level of years of experience, starting salary,

0:18:25 > 0:18:28base salary, would be about 73,000.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30That's really, really good.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33That was about £20,000 more than Kerry earned at home.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38When John and Kerry met up to compare notes

0:18:38 > 0:18:41they came to a staggering realisation.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45So between us we could possibly earn £40,000 a year more.

0:18:45 > 0:18:4840 yeah - 40 grand a year more.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52Hmm, what do you say to that?

0:18:52 > 0:18:54You can't say nothing to that, can you?

0:18:54 > 0:18:55It's shocking, isn't it?

0:18:55 > 0:18:58I wasn't expecting as much as that, I've got to be honest.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00So how did they vote on working in Perth?

0:19:00 > 0:19:03Based on our works experience we are voting for...

0:19:16 > 0:19:18BOTH: Australia.

0:19:18 > 0:19:20- This is my dream, this is, love. - Yeah.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24To work normal day shifts, like, I'd be home every single day to

0:19:24 > 0:19:26spend time with you.

0:19:26 > 0:19:27John was on cloud nine.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30With a better result than he could ever have hoped for,

0:19:30 > 0:19:32his dream was potentially on track.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37- I'm well happy, I am!- Brilliant. - Yep. Brilliant.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47Life in Australia was starting to look promising for the Woodlands,

0:19:47 > 0:19:50but John still had to get Chloe on board.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53To sample Australia's lifestyle opportunities,

0:19:53 > 0:19:56the family visited Perth's iconic Cottesloe Beach.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58It was a rare day out together.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09Watching Kerry and Chloe both enjoying

0:20:09 > 0:20:13themselves on their bikes, I haven't seen it before cos, like I say,

0:20:13 > 0:20:17I work away a lot back home and family time together is quite

0:20:17 > 0:20:22limited but to watch them today, yeah, has been very entertaining.

0:20:22 > 0:20:26Seeing Mum and Dad together was having a positive effect on Chloe.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31They never get time to go out and do stuff like this back in the UK

0:20:31 > 0:20:35so I think the move out here would make them a lot more happy

0:20:35 > 0:20:39and a lot more like they're back in love together rather than

0:20:39 > 0:20:41being separated all the time.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46A local pub gave the family the chance to consider what

0:20:46 > 0:20:48Australia could offer.

0:20:48 > 0:20:52To do something like this every weekend, that would be nice,

0:20:52 > 0:20:54especially spend a lot more time with yourself.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57It does make you realise, doesn't it, what else there could be to life

0:20:57 > 0:21:01rather than just, sort of, work and the house and TV.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05John was pleased with how the day seemed to have affected Chloe.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08The more she has the time over here, the more that she realises

0:21:08 > 0:21:10that Australia could offer a lot more than

0:21:10 > 0:21:13what were we live does and I think she's coming round to the idea.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16At the beginning of the week I was quite scared just

0:21:16 > 0:21:21because I didn't know what there was to do but today have given me...

0:21:21 > 0:21:23Well, opened my eyes, really.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26- Cheers for a good day.- Cheers. - Cheers.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29But time out had also made Kerry realise just how big

0:21:29 > 0:21:32a decision the family were facing.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34It's just a shame that if we did move over

0:21:34 > 0:21:36here it would be just the three of us.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38It wouldn't be that you'd have your family there or the people

0:21:38 > 0:21:40that you would normally spend days with.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Mm, yeah, true enough.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47Based on lifestyle, though, did the family choose Australia or the UK?

0:21:47 > 0:21:51Based on our lifestyle activity today, we are voting for...

0:21:57 > 0:22:00- Australia.- Australia.- Australia.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02I enjoyed today. I think it was lovely to spend, you know,

0:22:02 > 0:22:04time doing something different, enjoying the weather

0:22:04 > 0:22:06and enjoying each other's company.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08I enjoyed watching you enjoy yourself, I did,

0:22:08 > 0:22:09- watching you on the bicycle.- Aw!

0:22:14 > 0:22:17A full house for the Aussie lifestyle had taken John

0:22:17 > 0:22:19another step closer to his dream

0:22:19 > 0:22:23but he needed to know if the family could afford to live down under.

0:22:26 > 0:22:30The Woodlands hoped to rent out their UK home for £400 a month

0:22:30 > 0:22:32to help with expenses,

0:22:32 > 0:22:37but did two local estate agents agree with that valuation?

0:22:37 > 0:22:39Seems so weird, doesn't it?

0:22:39 > 0:22:41It's clear to me the property is very well presented.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44It's tastefully decorated through the lounge and dining area.

0:22:46 > 0:22:50Yeah, it's a nice cosy dining area leading through into the kitchen.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53Nice patio doors through to outside. Very good. Very good.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56This kitchen is a very good size again.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59They've done a nice finish in the high gloss units which we see.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02This really is a fantastically sized bedroom with the fitted

0:23:02 > 0:23:06wardrobes at the end is obviously an added incentive to the room as well.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08In the current market conditions this house should

0:23:08 > 0:23:10sell for in the region of £75,000.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13For a quick sale I'd expect £67,500.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16However, if they were prepared to put it on the rental market

0:23:16 > 0:23:19I'd expect to achieve about £425 per calendar month.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21In the current market conditions

0:23:21 > 0:23:23I would value this property at £75,000.

0:23:23 > 0:23:28For a quick sale I would value it at £69,950 and for the rental market

0:23:28 > 0:23:30I would hope to achieve in the region of £450 per calendar month.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33- Even better.- Happy with that?

0:23:34 > 0:23:38It was a good result but what about the cost of living in Perth?

0:23:38 > 0:23:42The couple compared their finances at home with those in Australia,

0:23:42 > 0:23:44starting with the weekly food shop.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49OK, let's have a little look.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51Potatoes - £8.40!

0:23:51 > 0:23:56£8.40 compared to £3 in the UK for a 5kg bag.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58That's really expensive.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01Everything just seems to be a lot more here in Australia.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05£49.32 a week.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08- Worse off?- Worse off.

0:24:08 > 0:24:12And that was just the food bill. Next up were the bigger costs

0:24:12 > 0:24:14such as rent down under.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18Back in the UK the couple's mortgage cost £200 a month.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22The rental here would be £1,667

0:24:22 > 0:24:25- but, again, that would be on the nicer house.- Yeah.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30It would cost almost £1,500 more a month to rent in Perth

0:24:30 > 0:24:34but with an increase of £40,000 in earnings down under,

0:24:34 > 0:24:36was Kerry in for a pleasant surprise?

0:24:39 > 0:24:43- So £921 pounds...- A month.

0:24:43 > 0:24:44Better off in Australia.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46And that's the most expensive.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48And that's with the most expensive house.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51- Shocking. - Bit of a result there, isn't it?

0:24:51 > 0:24:53Yeah, it's brilliant.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55And the all-important bottom line?

0:24:55 > 0:24:58BOTH: £11,052 a year...

0:24:58 > 0:24:59better off.

0:24:59 > 0:25:00HE CHUCKLES

0:25:02 > 0:25:05- That's good, that is.- There you go.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11It was possibly the easiest decision of the week for the Woodlands.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14Based on our cost of living, we are voting for...

0:25:22 > 0:25:24BOTH: Australia.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29And we would be silly not to because the figures speak for themselves.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33Being home every day as well, which is a bonus, and nice house.

0:25:43 > 0:25:47Australia could have meant more time together for the Woodlands

0:25:47 > 0:25:49but with John's dream within touching distance,

0:25:49 > 0:25:53the family had yet to face their biggest hurdle.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56As they sat down to watch a DVD of messages from home,

0:25:56 > 0:25:59would the reality of leaving loved ones behind prove too much to

0:25:59 > 0:26:02bear for Chloe and Kerry?

0:26:03 > 0:26:06Hiya, John. Hiya, Kerry. Hiya, Chloe.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10All right, Chloe, Kerry and John, missing you loads.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12My relationship with Kerry is we are best friends,

0:26:12 > 0:26:15we can tell each other anything.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18Soul of the party, really, John. Yeah.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21- He's not just a cousin, he's also our friend as well.- Yeah.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23I love being in a relationship with Chloe.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25She makes me feel really happy.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29She's really fun to be with, we always have a laugh.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32You don't really expect your children to up

0:26:32 > 0:26:34and go to the other side of the world

0:26:34 > 0:26:38but at the same point

0:26:38 > 0:26:41I'm happy for her, for the three of them.

0:26:41 > 0:26:42Aw, poor Nan.

0:26:44 > 0:26:48If Chloe moved to Australia, I would miss her loads.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51I'd be thinking about her all the time, really.

0:26:53 > 0:26:54I'd be gutted.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58I think over the last few years we've just got a really close

0:26:58 > 0:26:59bond and I would miss her.

0:27:02 > 0:27:03Sorry.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07Whatever decision you make, it will be the right one

0:27:07 > 0:27:10and we will miss you lots.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14This is an opportunity of a lifetime, you have to take it.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16Grasp it with both hands and enjoy it.

0:27:16 > 0:27:17Bye.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22I hope you don't want to be without me but you've got to do

0:27:22 > 0:27:24what makes you happy.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28I love you loads and I'll see you soon.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30Make your decision.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33Either stay or come back to us.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36Love you lots, Mam.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39It makes you realise, doesn't it, everybody that you're going

0:27:39 > 0:27:42to be leaving behind and, you know, how much they're going to

0:27:42 > 0:27:44miss you, not just how much you're going to miss them.

0:27:51 > 0:27:55Leaving loved ones had always been Chloe and Kerry's biggest concern.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58It was now time for some serious thinking. Would they decide

0:27:58 > 0:28:02a new life down under was worth sacrificing what they had at home?

0:28:02 > 0:28:06To leave all you've got to leave back home,

0:28:06 > 0:28:08with the normality of life back home what you're used to

0:28:08 > 0:28:12and all that, would be a big choice and decision for us to make

0:28:12 > 0:28:15but I believe that we could make it over here.

0:28:15 > 0:28:19I've seen my mum and dad's relationship become a lot

0:28:19 > 0:28:23more closer. They seem to be a lot more, as you'd say, loved up.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26It's been lovely having John home every day, or being with us

0:28:26 > 0:28:30every day and doing...just doing things together as a family.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33If we decide to stay or go I think the biggest thing is that

0:28:33 > 0:28:35I'd like to spend more time with my wife and my daughter.

0:28:35 > 0:28:41I do dream of walking with my wife whether it be on a beach or just

0:28:41 > 0:28:47in a park but just spending time and doing just normal things with Kerry.

0:28:47 > 0:28:50The week had been John's last chance to achieve the family life

0:28:50 > 0:28:52he'd been dreaming of for years.

0:28:52 > 0:28:57So when it came to the crucial vote, what did the Woodlands decide?

0:28:57 > 0:29:00After an amazing week in Australia the country that we chose to

0:29:00 > 0:29:01live in is...

0:29:10 > 0:29:11- Australia.- Undecided.

0:29:11 > 0:29:13- Australia. I knew you'd choose that. - Did you?

0:29:15 > 0:29:17I just feel I need a little bit more time to

0:29:17 > 0:29:20sort of get my own thoughts together and have a good think about it.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22No, I understand that Kerry.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25I mean, is it the thought of leaving family and friends behind

0:29:25 > 0:29:27which has swayed you to be undecided?

0:29:27 > 0:29:29I think that's one of the main reasons

0:29:29 > 0:29:32and I also think it's fear of, you know, you're leaving

0:29:32 > 0:29:35- everything that you're familiar with back home.- OK.

0:29:35 > 0:29:37How about you, Chloe, why have you chosen Australia?

0:29:37 > 0:29:41Because I just think it's going to be a better lifestyle altogether.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44Well, I thought you'd be the one being undecided, not your mum.

0:29:44 > 0:29:46I can see all the points that you've made.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48They're all valid points.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52I just think it just needs a little bit more deciding for me.

0:30:01 > 0:30:05It had been a week to remember for the Woodlands.

0:30:05 > 0:30:09Although Chloe had finally come round to her dad's idea of a future

0:30:09 > 0:30:15together in Australia, Kerry just wasn't 100% on board.

0:30:15 > 0:30:19It looked like John's dream of a fresh start was on hold.

0:30:19 > 0:30:21So, a year after we last saw them,

0:30:21 > 0:30:23is it still Wales the Woodlands call home?

0:30:25 > 0:30:31It's 2014 and 12 months on, John and Kerry are now living in...

0:30:31 > 0:30:33Perth, Western Australia!

0:30:33 > 0:30:37Despite being undecided about a move after their trial week,

0:30:37 > 0:30:40on their return to Wales Kerry had a change of heart.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43Even though I could have taken or left the move, I think that it was

0:30:43 > 0:30:47something John and Chloe wanted to do and I didn't

0:30:47 > 0:30:52want to be the one person that stopped them fulfilling their

0:30:52 > 0:30:53futures and their dreams.

0:30:53 > 0:30:58When Kerry said yes to coming over here, it made me happy

0:30:58 > 0:31:02because our life in the UK wasn't exactly perfect with me being

0:31:02 > 0:31:03away all the time.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06We just got to the point, didn't we, that we just sort of said,

0:31:06 > 0:31:08"If we're going to do it then we just need to do it,"

0:31:08 > 0:31:10and we literally said that

0:31:10 > 0:31:12and booked the flights the following day!

0:31:12 > 0:31:16The couple arranged their flights to coincide with John's birthday.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19By finally agreeing to the move, Kerry had given him

0:31:19 > 0:31:21the ultimate present.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23And she was quick to secure work.

0:31:24 > 0:31:28I did contact a few hospitals in Perth.

0:31:28 > 0:31:31I was really fortunate that I secured employment.

0:31:31 > 0:31:35Knowing that I had a job to come to did take some of the pressure off us

0:31:35 > 0:31:38cos we knew that we would have some income coming in.

0:31:38 > 0:31:42After a final Christmas in the UK, John's birthday arrived and the

0:31:42 > 0:31:46couple flew to Perth in January 2014...

0:31:46 > 0:31:48But Chloe wasn't on board.

0:31:48 > 0:31:50I thought me and Kerry would come over

0:31:50 > 0:31:52and set things up for when Chloe decides

0:31:52 > 0:31:54to come and its all set up for her, then.

0:31:54 > 0:31:58I think Chloe agreed she didn't want to be in a situation where we were

0:31:58 > 0:32:02all cooped up in a holiday let with the stress of looking for somewhere

0:32:02 > 0:32:03to live and John looking for work.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06Just come over when everything was sorted and settled.

0:32:07 > 0:32:11Leaving their only child behind wasn't easy for the couple and

0:32:11 > 0:32:14although only temporary, Kerry had concerns.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17It was horrible knowing you were leaving her because you

0:32:17 > 0:32:19knew you weren't going to see her for a month.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22Being separated from my mum and dad was tough

0:32:22 > 0:32:25but it was also nice, the fact that I could spend some more time

0:32:25 > 0:32:27with my nan and the rest of the family.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30The biggest fear was that we would be here and she would suddenly

0:32:30 > 0:32:32ring me and say "I'm not coming."

0:32:32 > 0:32:36Chloe didn't have a change of heart though -

0:32:36 > 0:32:40a month after her parents made the move, she finally joined them.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43We were wondering, would she change her mind at the last

0:32:43 > 0:32:45minute and not arrive?

0:32:45 > 0:32:47So it was almost like a big relief on the day that she

0:32:47 > 0:32:50flew in to Perth because you knew that she was here.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53When I was reunited with my mam and dad it was a really, really

0:32:53 > 0:32:56good moment after not being with them for a month and then having

0:32:56 > 0:33:00to come out to a brand-new country, brand-new house. It was really nice.

0:33:00 > 0:33:04Picked her up in the airport I had tears in my eyes.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07I hadn't been away from my daughter for that length of time before.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10It was a big weight off our shoulders and we'd missed her

0:33:10 > 0:33:14just happy to be a family again and have us all under one roof.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17And Chloe hadn't made the journey alone.

0:33:17 > 0:33:21I was upset about the thought of leaving Sam in the UK.

0:33:21 > 0:33:25When Sam said that he was willing to come over to Australia with me

0:33:25 > 0:33:27I was shocked at the fact he was willing to leave

0:33:27 > 0:33:30all his family, his friends to come and make a new life with me

0:33:30 > 0:33:31and my family.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34I wouldn't have liked to leave her coming over here

0:33:34 > 0:33:36and I would have been on my own in the UK.

0:33:36 > 0:33:39I wouldn't live in the UK without Chloe, no.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42But I was also relieved as well, the fact that I didn't have to worry

0:33:42 > 0:33:44about having to leave it there

0:33:44 > 0:33:49so that took a lot of stress off myself to actually be able to move.

0:33:49 > 0:33:52One last arrival made the family complete.

0:33:52 > 0:33:56Come on, then. Come on. Have your dinner. Good boy.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58It was the big count down then.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00He was the last member of our family

0:34:00 > 0:34:03that we needed to be a complete unit.

0:34:03 > 0:34:04The family dog, Sid,

0:34:04 > 0:34:08made his appearance in Perth soon after Chloe and Sam.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11He's settle down quite well. He loves the beach.

0:34:11 > 0:34:13He really does love the beach!

0:34:16 > 0:34:19With the dog arriving, my daughter arriving,

0:34:19 > 0:34:21we just felt like a family unit again.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25With the whole family reunited in Australia,

0:34:25 > 0:34:28it was time to start their new lives together

0:34:28 > 0:34:30in the rental property John and Kerry had found

0:34:30 > 0:34:33south of Perth in the suburb of Port Kennedy.

0:34:35 > 0:34:37We come in here and we just seen the pool and thought,

0:34:37 > 0:34:40"Yeah, it's a pool, man. Happy days!"

0:34:40 > 0:34:42It just ticked all the boxes, really.

0:34:42 > 0:34:44It was like, "We want this house."

0:34:44 > 0:34:48This is our master bedroom at the front of the house

0:34:48 > 0:34:50here in Australia.

0:34:50 > 0:34:54We have two walk-in wardrobes, one on either side

0:34:54 > 0:34:58and it's really useful then just having the en-suite.

0:34:58 > 0:35:01This is our main living area.

0:35:01 > 0:35:04You've got all your dining area, living area

0:35:04 > 0:35:07and kitchen all in one space.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11And now we have the main entertaining area where we spend

0:35:11 > 0:35:14most of our time in the summer months.

0:35:14 > 0:35:18Managed to pick up a nice cheap little pool table.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21This is our favourite part of the house, this is our swimming pool.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24When you're working and it's been nice and hot, coming home

0:35:24 > 0:35:28and it's still warm at 8pm or 9pm, you just dive in.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30It's just brilliant.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33A home in Port Kennedy is convenient for Kerry's job

0:35:33 > 0:35:36but it's not the perfect area.

0:35:36 > 0:35:39Living in Port Kennedy is not the ideal, it wasn't really where we

0:35:39 > 0:35:44wanted to be. We had planned to be in the Northern Suburbs.

0:35:44 > 0:35:49That's where we know people, that's where our social network is.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52Port Kennedy doesn't have a community feel.

0:35:52 > 0:35:53There's not much really to do.

0:35:58 > 0:36:02Kerry started work as a midwife in a hospital three weeks after arriving

0:36:02 > 0:36:05but the transition to work wasn't easy.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09Even though the job itself is the same, the private system works

0:36:09 > 0:36:11differently to the NHS.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14Things have taken a lot of adjustment and in some ways

0:36:14 > 0:36:17have knocked my confidence in the job

0:36:17 > 0:36:20because where in the UK I felt exactly I knew what I was doing,

0:36:20 > 0:36:23here I felt as though I was learning again from the start.

0:36:23 > 0:36:27Although Kerry's taking time to adapt to her new role,

0:36:27 > 0:36:30John's not looking back when it comes to his new job.

0:36:30 > 0:36:34After gaining his Australian HGV licence, he's now

0:36:34 > 0:36:38back in the driving seat and making the most of his new working pattern.

0:36:38 > 0:36:42I'm happy where I am because I'm doing the same line of work

0:36:42 > 0:36:44as I was doing in the UK on the car transporters.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46I enjoy it and it's local work.

0:36:46 > 0:36:50I'm home every day, no weekend work as of yet.

0:36:50 > 0:36:55I come to Australia for spending more time at home with my family

0:36:55 > 0:36:58and the job I'm doing now enables me to do that.

0:36:58 > 0:37:02John now has much more time with the family.

0:37:02 > 0:37:04It's a world away from his life in the UK

0:37:04 > 0:37:07when days spent on the road meant he was hardly ever at home.

0:37:09 > 0:37:13You don't realise what you've missed until it's too late and I know I've

0:37:13 > 0:37:16missed a lot of my daughter's growing up years

0:37:16 > 0:37:19but I'm glad she's over here and glad I'm spending more time with her.

0:37:19 > 0:37:23It's nice, it's what families should be.

0:37:23 > 0:37:25It's quite nice to see that they're connecting again.

0:37:25 > 0:37:27You can see them having quality time.

0:37:27 > 0:37:32And it's not only father-daughter time that's improved down under -

0:37:32 > 0:37:36having his evenings and weekends free also means John can spend

0:37:36 > 0:37:37quality time with his wife.

0:37:39 > 0:37:41In the UK we lived almost separate lives, really, haven't we?

0:37:41 > 0:37:44I was at home you worked away.

0:37:44 > 0:37:48I think that spending more time together here in Australia

0:37:48 > 0:37:50definitely made us a little bit closer.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53We do lots more different things, even if it's just going to the beach

0:37:53 > 0:37:55or going to the local pub or even

0:37:55 > 0:37:57just sitting in the garden and chatting.

0:37:57 > 0:38:02Seeing my mam and dad really happy is such a nice thing to see just

0:38:02 > 0:38:07because of the way they were back in the UK and how things have changed.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10It's really, really lovely to see.

0:38:10 > 0:38:14The Australian lifestyle's also agreeing with another loved-up

0:38:14 > 0:38:17couple making the most of their new life together down under.

0:38:17 > 0:38:21Me and Sam, when we've got spare time we usually go down the beach,

0:38:21 > 0:38:24we usually go out to the local pub

0:38:24 > 0:38:27or maybe go to the city and stuff like that.

0:38:27 > 0:38:30Yeah, I think we've got more of a better social life in Australia

0:38:30 > 0:38:32than we did back in the UK.

0:38:32 > 0:38:34Both Chloe and Sam have found jobs

0:38:34 > 0:38:36which are helping to ease the transition.

0:38:36 > 0:38:38Chloe's working in telecommunications

0:38:38 > 0:38:41while Sam's a carpet salesman.

0:38:41 > 0:38:45I am really, really enjoying my new job working with nice people,

0:38:45 > 0:38:50working with people my own age so I know that I can go out with them.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52Sam has settled in, I think, quite good

0:38:52 > 0:38:56considering he got no family over here as such.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58With my job I drive around and see lots of different

0:38:58 > 0:39:00places of Western Australia.

0:39:00 > 0:39:02There's definitely better opportunities out here for me

0:39:02 > 0:39:04rather than back home.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08Chloe did have an initial bout of homesickness when she arrived,

0:39:08 > 0:39:11but having Sam around has helped her find her feet down under.

0:39:11 > 0:39:14When it was the first few weeks of being in Australia

0:39:14 > 0:39:17I found it really hard but then after them few weeks pass

0:39:17 > 0:39:20and you've started to settle in, you've started to get a job,

0:39:20 > 0:39:23you've started to meet new people, it went a lot easier.

0:39:23 > 0:39:25Obviously with Sam being here,

0:39:25 > 0:39:28it's helped my daughter settle down a lot quicker.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31I think Chloe's adapting quite quickly to being in Australia.

0:39:31 > 0:39:36She feels a lot better about it now than when we first got here.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39When Chloe's having one of her bad days I do try and help her through.

0:39:39 > 0:39:43While Chloe and Sam are now settling in to an Australian routine,

0:39:43 > 0:39:47Kerry does sometimes struggle being so far from loved ones at home.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49The worst thing for me...

0:39:49 > 0:39:51Um...

0:39:51 > 0:39:54- See?- I know.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00That's the only problem being the other side of the world

0:40:00 > 0:40:02is your friends and your family

0:40:02 > 0:40:04which, obviously, my wife still misses.

0:40:06 > 0:40:09You're saying goodbye to the people you care about

0:40:09 > 0:40:12and you don't really know when you're going to see them again.

0:40:12 > 0:40:15- And I think that's the worst bit, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18And that means, although it's still early days,

0:40:18 > 0:40:21she's not 100% convinced the move to the other side of the

0:40:21 > 0:40:22world's a permanent one.

0:40:22 > 0:40:25I'm not sure I definitely want to be in Australia.

0:40:25 > 0:40:30I could probably quite easily go home at the minute,

0:40:30 > 0:40:33but I know that realistically I've not given it a fair chance.

0:40:33 > 0:40:38So I think my biggest concern is maybe going back for a holiday

0:40:38 > 0:40:40and realising I don't want to be here.

0:40:41 > 0:40:46Kerry's aware her feelings have impacted on the move for John.

0:40:46 > 0:40:50I think John initially was absolutely fine.

0:40:50 > 0:40:52I've probably worn him down a little bit

0:40:52 > 0:40:55and I do sort of nag on at him a little bit

0:40:55 > 0:41:00and I do think that sometimes I've maybe emotionally drained him.

0:41:00 > 0:41:03My concern is your happiness, really.

0:41:03 > 0:41:06If you decide to go back home, obviously I'll come with you.

0:41:06 > 0:41:10- My main concern is if our Chloe wants to...- Didn't want to come.- Yeah.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13But ironically, the person most opposed to a move

0:41:13 > 0:41:14in the first place,

0:41:14 > 0:41:18Chloe's now certain Australia's where her future lies.

0:41:20 > 0:41:23I'm glad that my dad persuaded me to move over to Australia because

0:41:23 > 0:41:26if I didn't, I would never have realised what a beautiful country

0:41:26 > 0:41:28and what opportunities lay in here.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30You almost feel like you've shot yourself in the foot

0:41:30 > 0:41:33cos she was the one that didn't want to come

0:41:33 > 0:41:35and now she's here, she's the one that doesn't want to go back.

0:41:35 > 0:41:41I think my life now is in Australia. I don't think I would ever go back

0:41:41 > 0:41:42to the UK to live.

0:41:42 > 0:41:47And boyfriend Sam also sees a sunny outlook down under.

0:41:47 > 0:41:50I think I'd like to stay in Australia forever.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52It's just a lot nicer place.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55I actually feel like I'm getting somewhere.

0:41:56 > 0:42:00The Woodlands have now been together in Australia for six months

0:42:00 > 0:42:01and homesickness aside,

0:42:01 > 0:42:04they're determined to give it their best shot.

0:42:04 > 0:42:07Now we've actually made the move and we're starting to feel

0:42:07 > 0:42:10a little bit more settled, I think that the future

0:42:10 > 0:42:12can only get better really.

0:42:12 > 0:42:14I think that we've done most of the hard work,

0:42:14 > 0:42:16we've got over most of the hurdles

0:42:16 > 0:42:18of moving and settling and finding jobs

0:42:18 > 0:42:20and finding our feet and I'm thinking

0:42:20 > 0:42:25that we'll probably start enjoying all that Australia has to offer.

0:42:25 > 0:42:28I think we made the right move to come over to Australia.

0:42:28 > 0:42:30People say you've got to give it two years.

0:42:30 > 0:42:32I mean, once I've settled down

0:42:32 > 0:42:34and I know where I want to be then that's it.

0:42:34 > 0:42:36And wherever it may lie, John

0:42:36 > 0:42:38and Kerry are both looking to the future.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41My hopes for the future for all of us, really,

0:42:41 > 0:42:45is that we're all happy and we decide where we want to be.

0:42:45 > 0:42:49If we stay over here, I'd like to build my own house and then

0:42:49 > 0:42:53live that Australian dream by getting myself a boat or a jet ski.

0:43:02 > 0:43:06It may have taken some time but the Woodland family are finally back

0:43:06 > 0:43:12together under the same roof, this time, half a world away from Wales.

0:43:12 > 0:43:15We wish them every continued happiness as they embark

0:43:15 > 0:43:17on their new lives down under.
