0:00:02 > 0:00:04Building a future with your partner

0:00:04 > 0:00:07is one of life's great adventures.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10But if you can't agree on which side of the world to spend it,

0:00:10 > 0:00:14even the strongest of relationships can be tested.

0:00:14 > 0:00:15Two years ago,

0:00:15 > 0:00:19Australian-born Leah Clanahan was hoping a trial week spent in

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Adelaide would finally convince her husband to make

0:00:22 > 0:00:24the move down under, for good.

0:00:24 > 0:00:29Today, we'll find out if Leah's dream to return home has come true.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35In 2013, Leah was yearning to return to her homeland.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39I think if we don't go back to Australia to live,

0:00:39 > 0:00:41I'm going to be broken-hearted.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44But for husband, Andrew, that was a massive ask.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47If I leave the UK, then I'm leaving my family behind,

0:00:47 > 0:00:50that I very much care for, and don't want to do that.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53A trial week down under saw Leah at breaking point.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55After this week if it's a no,

0:00:55 > 0:00:58I have to totally change my life.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01So, two years on, has Leah's wish been granted?

0:01:01 > 0:01:03I want to make her happy. That's the one thing I know

0:01:03 > 0:01:05that would make her happy.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30In the last 20 years, over 600,000 British citizens have moved

0:01:30 > 0:01:34to Australia, drawn by its warm climate, endless beaches,

0:01:34 > 0:01:37and wide-open countryside.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40The country's a magnet for those seeking a better life abroad,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43but for some, Australia doesn't live up to expectations,

0:01:43 > 0:01:47and around a half return home, having given up the dream.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51The Clanahans had visited Adelaide before,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54but the trip they made in 2013 was like

0:01:54 > 0:01:55no other.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59Heart-broken at being separated from loved ones in her native

0:01:59 > 0:02:02Australia, Mum, Leah, was hoping the benefits the country offered

0:02:02 > 0:02:05her family would be enough to persuade

0:02:05 > 0:02:08husband, Andrew, to sign up to a

0:02:08 > 0:02:10new life in the sun.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Today, we'll discover

0:02:12 > 0:02:15if it's the UK or Australia

0:02:15 > 0:02:16the Clanahans now call home.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22The 10,000-mile flight to Adelaide was a familiar

0:02:22 > 0:02:24one for the family, and touchdown

0:02:24 > 0:02:25saw Leah in top form.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32The idea of coming home's fantastic, you know, the air's different.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35But more than 24 hours in the air had given Andrew

0:02:35 > 0:02:37plenty of time for serious thinking.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39I'm quite apprehensive about the week ahead. No idea,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41don't know the salaries, um...

0:02:41 > 0:02:43I honestly don't know what we'll be able to afford.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Now, I know Australia's the place I want to be.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48But I just need Andrew to realise that as well.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Leah had just one week to quell Andrew's fears

0:02:51 > 0:02:54or her homecoming dream would be gone forever.

0:02:59 > 0:03:04Back in 2013, the Clanahans were living in Lauder, near Edinburgh.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Originally from Adelaide, in South Australia, Leah had

0:03:07 > 0:03:11come to the UK on a backpacking trip ten years previously.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15I met Andrew, and that kind of just changed the whole trip.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17It was never, ever meant to be anything serious

0:03:17 > 0:03:19because she knew she was going back home.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21That was always her intention.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24When photographer Leah became pregnant with Marlee,

0:03:24 > 0:03:27the move back to Australia was still on the cards,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29until Andrew's father suddenly passed away.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33My family are very close.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37It was just the four of us, my sister, myself, Mum and Dad.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41And when Dad went, that was a big, big shock to us

0:03:41 > 0:03:45and I suppose any plans that we had, it did put it on hold.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49Andrew felt he couldn't leave his family when they needed him most.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51But Leah was desperate to bring her daughter up

0:03:51 > 0:03:54surrounded by her own family down under.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57That just changed everything. All I wanted to do was go home.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59You know, this was my first baby and it just made me realise,

0:03:59 > 0:04:02I think it emphasised to me where I want to be.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Spending all their spare cash on trips to Adelaide was putting

0:04:06 > 0:04:09the family under huge financial strain.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Yeah, I mean, it costs me an absolute fortune

0:04:11 > 0:04:12going out to Australia.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16And the reason why we keep going on holiday but not moving out there?

0:04:16 > 0:04:19Erm, it's just purely because not knowing work-wise

0:04:19 > 0:04:21what I would get when I go over there.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23I'm settled here.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26I've got, I've got a job that I enjoy doing,

0:04:26 > 0:04:28that's reasonably paid,

0:04:28 > 0:04:30and it's leaving everybody behind.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Torn between families on opposite sides of the globe,

0:04:33 > 0:04:35things were becoming desperate.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38I think our relationship has certainly changed in the last

0:04:38 > 0:04:42couple of years. I certainly feel more resentful to him.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44I worry about my mother getting older,

0:04:44 > 0:04:46and who's going to look after her and...

0:04:46 > 0:04:49All the worries Andrew has for his mum at the moment,

0:04:49 > 0:04:52I have for my mum every day, so...

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Erm, after this week, if it's a no,

0:04:55 > 0:04:59I have to totally change my life and my thinking.

0:04:59 > 0:05:04Andrew knew his wife's future happiness was at stake.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08It makes me feel pretty down, myself, seeing that Leah's unhappy.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11So, I'm well aware that if we go over to Australia,

0:05:11 > 0:05:12that would be good for her,

0:05:12 > 0:05:15it would make her feel so much better.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18For Leah, a life down under meant everything.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20A dream come true for me

0:05:20 > 0:05:23would be to live my life in Australia.

0:05:25 > 0:05:26That's it.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30I know it's sad, but that would be my dream.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36The Clanahans were at crisis point.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39The following week would determine whether Andrew would grant Leah

0:05:39 > 0:05:43her dream or whether the family would stay in the UK for good.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51The Clanahans spent their trial week in Dernancourt,

0:05:51 > 0:05:55an established suburb in the north-east of Adelaide.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Their temporary home for the week was a period cottage.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00Did it put Andrew in the right frame of mind?

0:06:01 > 0:06:03This is nice.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06- This place is quite deceiving. - It is!

0:06:06 > 0:06:09It's just beautiful. It's very olde-worlde,

0:06:09 > 0:06:11which I don't think Andrew believes

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Australia has to offer, so that's good to show him that.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16- Things were off to a good start.- I get pressured

0:06:16 > 0:06:19when I come out to Australia all the time because Leah's thinking,

0:06:19 > 0:06:21"Well, he doesn't want to move to Australia," but that is not

0:06:21 > 0:06:23the case. It's just the uncertainty, moving to

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Australia, and what we'd be coming out to do.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28The family's future rested on the week ahead.

0:06:28 > 0:06:29It could be difficult.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32We could end up leaving here at the end of the week

0:06:32 > 0:06:34and she could be quite down about her decision,

0:06:34 > 0:06:36if it ends up going UK.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38If I don't get what I want at the end of it, which is

0:06:38 > 0:06:42to move back to Australia, then I have to try and work out,

0:06:42 > 0:06:45can I live the rest of my life in Scotland?

0:06:45 > 0:06:48And daughter, Marlee, was also concerned about the future.

0:06:48 > 0:06:53I'm a bit worried about my mum and dad,

0:06:53 > 0:06:58if they said if one stays in Scotland and one stays in Australia.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01With so much at stake,

0:07:01 > 0:07:05the week ahead really was crunch time for the Clanahans.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14Back home in Scotland, the Clanahans were living in a three-storey

0:07:14 > 0:07:16five-bedroom new build in Lauder.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18I really love this house.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20I think we're quite lucky having the space that we do.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23Probably, it would be emotional to give up this home because,

0:07:23 > 0:07:25erm, we've raised our daughter here.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28I mean, it gives you everything that I would want in a home, I suppose.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Um, it's just in the wrong country for me.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34The couple had very clear ideas about what

0:07:34 > 0:07:36they would like from a house down under.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38- Four bedrooms is what I'm really looking for.- In Australia,

0:07:38 > 0:07:40growing up there, I know the houses,

0:07:40 > 0:07:42they have big verandas around the house.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45- I mean, I would love something like that.- Because we've used

0:07:45 > 0:07:47any savings to go to Australia,

0:07:47 > 0:07:50any money I'm going to be taking with us, it'll be from the house.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54I think we're probably looking to spend between £250,000 to £300,000.

0:07:54 > 0:07:59If we go there and we find that, in reality, we can only afford

0:07:59 > 0:08:02a one-bedroom flat, then, that's not going to happen.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05And we'll just maybe have to come to terms that Australia's

0:08:05 > 0:08:07going to be off for us.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11To give the Clanahans an idea of what their budget could

0:08:11 > 0:08:14buy in Adelaide, we showed them three properties,

0:08:14 > 0:08:15ranging from the affordable

0:08:15 > 0:08:17to their dream home.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19The search began in Mawson Lakes,

0:08:19 > 0:08:21a suburb in the north-east of Adelaide.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Just 20 minutes from the city centre

0:08:23 > 0:08:25and with Leah's family nearby,

0:08:25 > 0:08:29it could have been the perfect spot for the family.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33- Wow.- This is different to how it looks outside. It's nice.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35- Nice long hallway.- Yeah.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38- Very long hallway.- This would be your bedroom, Marlee...

0:08:38 > 0:08:39It's a reasonable size as well.

0:08:39 > 0:08:44This is an en-suite that goes back out into the other side.

0:08:44 > 0:08:45I like this.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48It was looking good, so far.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50- Look at this.- Wow.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52It's a nice house.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54I like it here.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56With Andrew making all the right noises,

0:08:56 > 0:08:59Leah should have been pleased. But was she?

0:08:59 > 0:09:01You see, I think I, personally, would prefer to live

0:09:01 > 0:09:04further afield, to get more room.

0:09:04 > 0:09:05But then this is handy for the city.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08I just think this house is a little bit too small.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11It may well be that we would have to make that compromise of our

0:09:11 > 0:09:14- coming here and finding a smaller property.- Yeah, and I'm up for that,

0:09:14 > 0:09:16- but I'm just...yeah.- Yeah.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Mixed emotions for Leah.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20The house had made a good impression on Andrew,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23but wasn't quite as spacious as she'd hoped.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27Could they have afforded it, anyway, on their £280,000 budget?

0:09:27 > 0:09:30- OK, Marlee, read it. - We'll get Marlee to read it.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Right, Marlee. What's it worth, then?

0:09:32 > 0:09:36369,000.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42- Wow.- For that money, you would probably get something a bit bigger

0:09:42 > 0:09:46with a bigger garden and so, that's been a bit of an eye-opener for me.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48It was a disappointing start for Leah.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52At £253,000, this house was under budget,

0:09:52 > 0:09:55but just not the right size.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Could property two lift her spirits?

0:10:00 > 0:10:03It was in Greenwith, a quiet middle-class suburb

0:10:03 > 0:10:05slightly further out of the city centre.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09With four bedrooms, was this house more what Leah had in mind?

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Oh, my gosh, I think this is our house.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14It's beautiful, isn't it? Wow.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18I like this. It seems really open.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20I really like this room.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24I think I've been sold on this house just from the outside, so

0:10:24 > 0:10:26everything else is a bonus.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29- It's like he's home already. - Leah was impressed.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32- This is nice out here, isn't it? - This is huge.- Big, isn't it?

0:10:32 > 0:10:34It's such a fantastic area for you, Marlee, isn't it?

0:10:34 > 0:10:37- This is a good area for the kids, isn't it?- I really like it.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39- Right, so shall we just buy it now? - Yes.- Yes.- OK.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- Are we not going to have a look at the rest of the place first?- No.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43No, OK, just buy it. Right, come on, then.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46It looked like this house was a hit with everyone.

0:10:46 > 0:10:47And there was more to come.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50- Mum, this would be good for you. - LEAH SIGHS

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- Oh, my gosh.- What's in here?

0:10:53 > 0:10:55- This is...- Daddy...- ..like, the working area.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59- Oh!- Wow, this is really good, isn't it?

0:10:59 > 0:11:02- This is, like, this is my dream.- Oh, well.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06- It's a nice bathroom, isn't it? - Yeah, I'm sold.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09- There's a lot of space. - Do you like it?- I do like it, yes.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11So, shall we find out how much it's worth?

0:11:11 > 0:11:13Oh, yeah, let's do that bit, then.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15- This is the scary part, now.- Yeah.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19This house had certainly put a smile back on Leah's face,

0:11:19 > 0:11:21but did the price wipe it off again?

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Just remember, though, we still have to sell our own place

0:11:24 > 0:11:28back in the UK, which we don't know the value of yet, OK? It would all

0:11:28 > 0:11:31depend on what I could secure or what we both could secure work-wise.

0:11:31 > 0:11:32So let's both have an open mind.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34- Let's have an open mind. - OK, darling.

0:11:37 > 0:11:42510,000.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44That was £70,000 over their

0:11:44 > 0:11:48potential £280,000 budget.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50That doesn't seem too bad to me, though.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53Cos I'm looking at the pounds, £350,000.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Well, it's £100,000 more than the last house.

0:11:57 > 0:11:58Yeah, but look at the size of the

0:11:58 > 0:12:01- property that we got.- You're getting a lot more house for it. You're

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- getting a far better setting outside.- So, we're getting it?

0:12:08 > 0:12:11- Erm, no, not at the moment, Marlee. - LEAH CHUCKLES

0:12:11 > 0:12:12But there's hope that we might.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15This house had everything the family were looking for,

0:12:15 > 0:12:18but if Andrew didn't find the right job prospects,

0:12:18 > 0:12:20it could have remained beyond their reach.

0:12:23 > 0:12:24Last stop of the day was a newly-built

0:12:24 > 0:12:27estate on the outskirts of Adelaide.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29Blakes Crossing was still under construction,

0:12:29 > 0:12:31so the family viewed the show house.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Did it offer the space they wanted at the right price?

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- Wow. This is huge.- It's good, isn't it?- Just looking at one room.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45- Have you found your room?- Yeah.

0:12:46 > 0:12:51This large family home boasted several open-plan areas, a study

0:12:51 > 0:12:56and five bedrooms, plenty of room for overseas guests, and more.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58- A window out to the pool.- Wow.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01- Wow.- Wow.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- I can see you in that, doing your laps.- Yes.

0:13:06 > 0:13:07Yes, that would be cool.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10But Andrew had his sensible hat on.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13This is a new-build, so nobody's been in here before.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17If you've not got all the decor, and you've not got the finished garden,

0:13:17 > 0:13:18and there's lots of work to do.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20This has obviously got a bit of work into

0:13:20 > 0:13:22making this place look like this.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25- You're being negative.- I'm not being negative, I like this, it's nice.

0:13:25 > 0:13:30This house had the wow factor, but was it within their £280,000 budget?

0:13:30 > 0:13:33I think this one is probably about 600,000.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36- What did you reckon it was? - 600.- OK.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Right. Do you want to go and have a look then, Marlee?

0:13:42 > 0:13:48- £599,000.- Oh, I was pretty close.

0:13:48 > 0:13:49It was almost 50%

0:13:49 > 0:13:52more than their budget.

0:13:52 > 0:13:53So, that's a lot of money.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56That's double the house that we've got.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00The price, it's just beyond, I think, what we could

0:14:00 > 0:14:03dream of paying at the moment. A beautiful, beautiful property,

0:14:03 > 0:14:06and I wish we could afford it, cos I think I could definitely live here.

0:14:06 > 0:14:10But it's just, based on my current salary,

0:14:10 > 0:14:11that's just not going to happen.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16It had been an interesting day

0:14:16 > 0:14:18on the property hunt.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21The first house was within budget, but too small.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25Property two had been everything Leah had hoped for,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27even though it would have put a strain on

0:14:27 > 0:14:29the cheque book.

0:14:29 > 0:14:30And the final house had

0:14:30 > 0:14:32captured everyone's imagination,

0:14:32 > 0:14:33but to achieve it,

0:14:33 > 0:14:37the family would have had to increase their income massively.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41So, when it came to property, had Andrew been sold on Australia?

0:14:41 > 0:14:43So, based on the houses that we've seen today,

0:14:43 > 0:14:45we're going to vote for...

0:14:52 > 0:14:54- The UK.- The UK.- Australia.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00I didn't want to go for the UK

0:15:00 > 0:15:02because I really want to come to Australia,

0:15:02 > 0:15:05but just based on the houses that we've seen today

0:15:05 > 0:15:08and based on the salary that we have back in the UK, I don't think

0:15:08 > 0:15:11we can, ideally, purchase any of those houses comfortably.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13There's still a lot of doubt there, but certainly,

0:15:13 > 0:15:16based on what I've seen today, erm, yeah, UK.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19It was far from the start Leah had been hoping for.

0:15:19 > 0:15:23Her vote for the UK went against everything she'd ever wanted.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26The reality of Adelaide's property prices meant the couple's

0:15:26 > 0:15:28work prospects were now vital,

0:15:28 > 0:15:32if she was to be within shouting distance of keeping her dream alive.

0:15:36 > 0:15:37As the main breadwinner,

0:15:37 > 0:15:40finding the right job for Andrew down under was

0:15:40 > 0:15:43crucial for a move to work financially and, for him,

0:15:43 > 0:15:45it would be tough to top the job satisfaction

0:15:45 > 0:15:49he was enjoying as a technical manager back home.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53I have been with the same employer for 19 years.

0:15:53 > 0:15:58Erm, very, very loyal employee and

0:15:58 > 0:16:00once I'm there, I like to stay put.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03It's not everybody who can say that they enjoy their job, but I do,

0:16:03 > 0:16:06I do like my job, and I would really miss that.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10Leah was all too aware how much was riding on Andrew's

0:16:10 > 0:16:11job prospects in Adelaide.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13You know, if I didn't love him so much

0:16:13 > 0:16:15and we didn't have our life together,

0:16:15 > 0:16:19I would have gone a long time ago, because I am homesick, and that's

0:16:19 > 0:16:22where I want to be, but I really believe in him and

0:16:22 > 0:16:25I think that if he gets something, it'll help.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29With the children looked after by a childminder,

0:16:29 > 0:16:32the couple set off to explore their work opportunities.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35Leah was hoping to start up her own photography business,

0:16:35 > 0:16:38so she met up with local professional, Miriam.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Meanwhile, Andrew headed off to an IT company,

0:16:42 > 0:16:45to get the lowdown on potential jobs from Nick, a senior manager.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50He was anxious to know if he could find a similar role to what

0:16:50 > 0:16:52he did in the UK.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54We have a team of network engineers who maintain the

0:16:54 > 0:16:56operation of the network.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59Certainly the depth of experience, managing a large team,

0:16:59 > 0:17:02complex products, various suppliers

0:17:02 > 0:17:06and technologies is something that we would find very appealing.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08OK. That's good to hear.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10Great news for Andrew.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12How was Leah getting on?

0:17:12 > 0:17:15So, in Adelaide, what do you think are the opportunities

0:17:15 > 0:17:17for family photography?

0:17:17 > 0:17:21Adelaide is a very friendly, welcoming family town,

0:17:21 > 0:17:23so there's a lot of young families with children here.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26Really, it's just the perfect job for a mum.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28What would you think you would be charging

0:17:28 > 0:17:29families for an hour's session?

0:17:29 > 0:17:32200 for an hour's shoot for one person,

0:17:32 > 0:17:35and then I'd charge 30 per extra person.

0:17:35 > 0:17:39So a family of four would be 290.

0:17:39 > 0:17:40The figures sounded good.

0:17:40 > 0:17:44For Leah, a life down under could have been tantalisingly near.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52It's just so close, you know? I can feel that, and it's so...

0:17:52 > 0:17:55it's here, but now the apprehension's coming back

0:17:55 > 0:17:58because I know it doesn't rely on that.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01Our moving to Australia isn't reliant on me getting a job,

0:18:01 > 0:18:03it's Andrew getting a job.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06So, now I have to wait to see what he's going to find out today.

0:18:06 > 0:18:10Would Andrew deliver the news she was desperate to hear?

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Everything depended on his job prospects.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16We actually do have a vacancy for a Network Operations Manager

0:18:16 > 0:18:18which may or may not be suitable.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22- We should talk further, I think... - Wow, OK.- ..about that.

0:18:24 > 0:18:25Wow.

0:18:25 > 0:18:30Very surprised you saying that just now. It kind of threw me.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33For a senior management job with your skills and experience,

0:18:33 > 0:18:36as we've gone through, I'd be comfortable,

0:18:36 > 0:18:40sort of, pitching you towards the 110, 120,000 base salary...

0:18:40 > 0:18:42- Wow, OK.- ..which, in Adelaide,

0:18:42 > 0:18:47is more or less enough to comfortably support

0:18:47 > 0:18:50a decent lifestyle, sun-drenched, all that sort of stuff.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Was this a turning point for Andrew?

0:18:53 > 0:18:56After sort of discovering what I've discovered here,

0:18:56 > 0:18:59and that I could be actually on a better salary than

0:18:59 > 0:19:02I'm on in the UK, erm, it makes this whole thing

0:19:02 > 0:19:04a definite possibility.

0:19:04 > 0:19:08It was time to put Leah out of her misery.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12It was a very, very interesting afternoon.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15- It went very well for me. - Really?- Surprisingly well, yes.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18To the point where he said, "We've got a job here for you right now..."

0:19:18 > 0:19:21- What?!- .."if you would like to apply for it."

0:19:21 > 0:19:24- What?- And have me in for an interview.- And what did you say?

0:19:24 > 0:19:27Um, I says, "Well, I'm very interested, yes."

0:19:29 > 0:19:32- I'm so happy... - You've done well, yourself, so...

0:19:32 > 0:19:35So, had Andrew heard enough to sway his vote?

0:19:36 > 0:19:37So, we're going to vote for...

0:19:44 > 0:19:46- Australia.- Australia.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49Things were looking up for Leah.

0:19:49 > 0:19:50Are you really happy?

0:19:50 > 0:19:52It's amazing when you look at the internet,

0:19:52 > 0:19:55or you look anywhere else, you never see the jobs.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57But when you actually go and speak to people,

0:19:57 > 0:19:59you suddenly find out that they've got jobs.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05With Andrew's first vote for Australia, it looked like

0:20:05 > 0:20:09he could be finally coming round to the possibility of emigrating.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12So would a taste of the local lifestyle bring Leah yet another

0:20:12 > 0:20:13step closer to home?

0:20:14 > 0:20:16Back in the UK,

0:20:16 > 0:20:20the Clanahans shared a passion for visiting old castles and estates.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23So, down under, they spent the day roaming the grounds of Carrick Hill,

0:20:23 > 0:20:27one of Adelaide's few surviving period homes.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31It was a chance for the family to reflect on what life could be like.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35The kids have definitely enjoyed today.

0:20:35 > 0:20:37What's good about it, I think, is

0:20:37 > 0:20:39probably the weather more than anything else.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43Well, yeah, I've seen big changes in Andrew. I mean,

0:20:43 > 0:20:46today I've seen him jump in a sack and I've never seen him

0:20:46 > 0:20:48do anything like that before.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Um, so,

0:20:50 > 0:20:54you know, I think it brings out the best in him, being over here.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57Everyone's thoughts are turned towards the future.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02It's been an interesting week for me, emotion-wise,

0:21:02 > 0:21:06and certainly, after going to an employer yesterday and finding out

0:21:06 > 0:21:10the...how likely it is that I could find employment here.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12That makes a big difference.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15We have a lonely existence in the UK.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19We have a bit more of a lifestyle environment in Australia.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21I can just see my children flourish already, you know?

0:21:21 > 0:21:25Even today, watching them run around and roll down hills and...

0:21:25 > 0:21:28I haven't seen them be that happy for months.

0:21:28 > 0:21:32I think my mum's lonely because she doesn't get anybody to talk to

0:21:32 > 0:21:35when I'm at school and my dad's at work.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38I think it would be different in Australia because some of her

0:21:38 > 0:21:42family don't work and she'd be able to see them every day.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44So, based on their potential lifestyle,

0:21:44 > 0:21:47did the family vote for the UK or Australia?

0:21:47 > 0:21:51Based on our lovely day here today, we're going to vote for...

0:21:56 > 0:21:57ALL: Australia!

0:22:00 > 0:22:02Um, it's not that back home

0:22:02 > 0:22:04we don't get good times outside as well, it's just

0:22:04 > 0:22:07they tend to be limited. Here, I think there would be more of them

0:22:07 > 0:22:09and that's the reason why I've gone for this today.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15A unanimous vote for the Australian lifestyle was a

0:22:15 > 0:22:17great result for Leah.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20But it was now time to find out if they could afford it.

0:22:20 > 0:22:24We'd provided a comparison of costs between the UK and Australia.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27- They began with the weekly food shop.- So...

0:22:28 > 0:22:34- ..bacon, UK, £1.64, here, £4.63. - Four dollars. Oh, four pounds...

0:22:34 > 0:22:37- £4.63, it's been converted. - Oh, gosh.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40Here's something that's cheaper here. Battered fish.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43- We eat quite a lot of that cos Brodie likes it.- Yes.

0:22:43 > 0:22:49Baby wipes. UK cost for a packet of three, £1.83, over here, £5.76.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52- Yeah, I thought the baby stuffs were expensive.- Big difference.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54So how did the weekly shop add up?

0:22:56 > 0:22:59- It's £43.16 more expensive here.- OK.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03£43 a week wasn't going to break the bank.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05But what about the bigger outgoings?

0:23:05 > 0:23:08House prices in Adelaide had been an eye-opener for the Clanahans,

0:23:08 > 0:23:11but taking Andrew's potential increase in earnings

0:23:11 > 0:23:15down under into consideration, could they make it work?

0:23:15 > 0:23:16By living in Australia,

0:23:16 > 0:23:21- we're going to be getting an extra £20,000 a year.- Yeah.

0:23:21 > 0:23:22That's amazing.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24You can get a lot for £20,000, I suppose.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27- That figure alone is just based on your salary.- Yes.

0:23:27 > 0:23:29So, whatever I could make

0:23:29 > 0:23:31and bring to the household would be an extra bonus.

0:23:31 > 0:23:35- That could be our holiday money. - Absolutely.- It could be anything.

0:23:35 > 0:23:36A lot of money.

0:23:39 > 0:23:44The figures were good, but were they good enough to convince Andrew?

0:23:44 > 0:23:45We're going to vote for...

0:23:50 > 0:23:52- Australia.- Australia.

0:23:52 > 0:23:56I think we would actually just have such a fantastic life out here,

0:23:56 > 0:23:59- based on all that so...- I think we would have a very comfortable

0:23:59 > 0:24:02lifestyle here, and certainly, probably any of these houses

0:24:02 > 0:24:04we saw the other day we could probably afford.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12After another great result,

0:24:12 > 0:24:15an evening spent with Leah's family was the icing on the cake,

0:24:15 > 0:24:19but while Andrew's financial concerns may have been addressed,

0:24:19 > 0:24:24he knew family was at the real heart of the dilemma the couple faced.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26It's difficult because, obviously, we've both got family

0:24:26 > 0:24:28on each side of the world,

0:24:28 > 0:24:33and if I leave the UK, then I'm leaving my family behind

0:24:33 > 0:24:36that I very much care for, and don't want to do that.

0:24:36 > 0:24:40Leah felt the time had come for her to be reunited with her family.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43In the beginning, the first few years, I danced around

0:24:43 > 0:24:47supporting him and, you know, just thinking of his feelings 100%

0:24:47 > 0:24:49and putting my own homesickness in the background.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53And I think having children changes that because being pregnant

0:24:53 > 0:24:57and having no-one around you, going to hospital and having a baby

0:24:57 > 0:25:03and no-one coming to visit you, you know, it's a sad time,

0:25:03 > 0:25:06and no-one wants that. Everyone wants their family around them.

0:25:08 > 0:25:12And Andrew was all too aware of how much rested on his decision.

0:25:13 > 0:25:16If it's UK, then that's going to be shattering for her

0:25:16 > 0:25:18and for her mum as well, you know,

0:25:18 > 0:25:22because her mum wants us, desperately, to move out here.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24Um, in the same respects, it's going to be the same for the people

0:25:24 > 0:25:27back in Scotland as well, because, if we say it's Australia,

0:25:27 > 0:25:30then it's a toughie with my mum and sister as well.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32The couple had been avoiding having to

0:25:32 > 0:25:35choose between their families for as long as they had been together.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38You know, I think our relationship for the last few years has been

0:25:38 > 0:25:42affected by this because he's not wanted to come over here

0:25:42 > 0:25:44and I have, and there's that pulling all the time.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46You know, he wants to be one place

0:25:46 > 0:25:50and I want to be the other place, so for us to have come and experienced

0:25:50 > 0:25:53this and worked out what we could and what we could not,

0:25:53 > 0:25:57to then just be... End result, "No, we're staying in the UK."

0:25:57 > 0:25:59I think I'm going to be really upset.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10The trial week had seen Andrew overcome his financial

0:26:10 > 0:26:15and work concerns, but he still faced, possibly, his biggest hurdle.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17While Brodie was looked after by a childminder,

0:26:17 > 0:26:21the rest of the family sat down to watch a DVD of messages from home.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24Hi, Andrew. Hi, Leah, Marlee and Brodie.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26Hope your trip's going really, really well.

0:26:26 > 0:26:30Well, I hope you're having a wonderful time,

0:26:30 > 0:26:32and I hope you all like it.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35The best way to describe them - they are noisy,

0:26:35 > 0:26:37hardworking,

0:26:37 > 0:26:38and just great people to be with.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42Erm, as a family, they're just a lovely couple. You know,

0:26:42 > 0:26:44they would do anything for anybody.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47She's the sort of person that, if I had had a sister,

0:26:47 > 0:26:49'I would have wanted her as my sister.'

0:26:49 > 0:26:50- ALL:- Aw.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53'You know, she's just a lovely, lovely girl. She's so caring.'

0:26:53 > 0:26:56She's shy, she's a great mum,

0:26:56 > 0:26:59a great photographer,

0:26:59 > 0:27:01um, a good friend.

0:27:01 > 0:27:06Andrew as a brother, he's just a lovely guy to have as your brother.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08Somebody that, you know, without him in my life,

0:27:08 > 0:27:11would just be pretty bad, yeah.

0:27:13 > 0:27:17Obviously, I'll miss them, very much so, and the children growing up.

0:27:17 > 0:27:22As you say, there's still Skype and videos and stuff, you know,

0:27:22 > 0:27:27but it's not the same. If they do go away, well, they'll have her family.

0:27:27 > 0:27:29I can see that.

0:27:29 > 0:27:31- I've never heard her say that before.- No.

0:27:31 > 0:27:36Since my dad died eight years ago, you know, Andrew, Mum

0:27:36 > 0:27:39and I, and Leah, the four of us just became so, so close.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42I think, you know, we've just always been there

0:27:42 > 0:27:45for each other, no matter what, um, that's...

0:27:45 > 0:27:48I think when faced with that

0:27:48 > 0:27:52"It's going to happen", that's just going to be so difficult,

0:27:52 > 0:27:53so upsetting.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58Whatever you decide, it'll be the right thing for you,

0:27:58 > 0:28:00your family, and us, but we'll miss you.

0:28:02 > 0:28:05I know that if you do stay, it's going to be a far better life

0:28:05 > 0:28:10for all of you, and especially for the kids growing up, um...

0:28:12 > 0:28:13Yeah...

0:28:18 > 0:28:19I can't say any more.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36It's just, you know, you feel pulled in both directions.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42It's just hard, when you see it like that on screen, though.

0:28:42 > 0:28:43Yeah, I know.

0:28:45 > 0:28:48I'd really miss my uncle and my aunties.

0:28:53 > 0:28:54I know it's hard.

0:28:55 > 0:28:58For Leah, the trial week was the best shot she'd ever

0:28:58 > 0:29:01had at persuading Andrew to move down under.

0:29:01 > 0:29:03As the final vote approached,

0:29:03 > 0:29:06she was still unsure where her destiny lay.

0:29:06 > 0:29:08I don't know if there's a calling inside you, of where you're

0:29:08 > 0:29:12born, and you want to return to that place. Whatever it was, I had it.

0:29:12 > 0:29:16So, this whole week, has, you know, that's going to give me

0:29:16 > 0:29:17what I need to know.

0:29:17 > 0:29:19Am I coming home or not?

0:29:20 > 0:29:23Definitely a massive decision. I do feel pressured.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25Um, Leah doesn't want to pressure me.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28She definitely doesn't want to do that, but she can't help doing it.

0:29:28 > 0:29:32Everything relies on the decision that Andrew makes.

0:29:33 > 0:29:35That's a hard thing for me to say,

0:29:35 > 0:29:39because... What's going to happen if he says no?

0:29:41 > 0:29:44If I do make the decision to come to Australia,

0:29:44 > 0:29:47it's going to be hard saying goodbye to my family,

0:29:47 > 0:29:48the loved ones, you know?

0:29:48 > 0:29:51It's people I've known all my life.

0:29:51 > 0:29:52If we have more children,

0:29:52 > 0:29:56there's no way we can take our whole family to Australia every year, so

0:29:56 > 0:29:59I'll then have to look at the reality that I'll be home,

0:29:59 > 0:30:02maybe once every five years and...

0:30:02 > 0:30:05People are going to die. People are going to get married.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07There's going to be more babies in the family

0:30:07 > 0:30:08that I'm going to miss out on.

0:30:09 > 0:30:14Cos that's my biggest worry, that I'm missing everything over here.

0:30:16 > 0:30:18So, when it came to the final turn of the cards,

0:30:18 > 0:30:21had Leah done enough to convince Andrew to bring her home?

0:30:31 > 0:30:33ALL: Australia!

0:30:35 > 0:30:38- Is that real?- Yeah. - Are you really 100%?

0:30:38 > 0:30:40Yeah. I'm happy.

0:30:40 > 0:30:42- It's just the work's still... - Yeah, the work, I know.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45..is a big risk. Everything else seems to have fallen into place.

0:30:45 > 0:30:47- We'll just have to see where the road takes us.- Absolutely.

0:30:47 > 0:30:49It looks like a good road.

0:30:50 > 0:30:51Yay!

0:30:57 > 0:31:00It had been an emotional roller-coaster of a week

0:31:00 > 0:31:02for the Clanahans,

0:31:02 > 0:31:05but it looked like Australia had worked its magic

0:31:05 > 0:31:08and Leah's wish had finally been granted.

0:31:08 > 0:31:11So, two years after we last saw them,

0:31:11 > 0:31:15have the family made the move to the other side of the world?

0:31:17 > 0:31:19It's 2015 and the Clanahans,

0:31:19 > 0:31:20now a family of five,

0:31:20 > 0:31:23are living in...

0:31:23 > 0:31:24Lauder, in Scotland.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28Their trial week down under had opened Andrew's eyes

0:31:28 > 0:31:31to the possibility of a life in Australia.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34To actually have a week out and actually do things

0:31:34 > 0:31:37specific to us with the idea of moving to Australia,

0:31:37 > 0:31:39it was fantastic. Really, really good week.

0:31:39 > 0:31:42All the sort of worries that he had I think were answered,

0:31:42 > 0:31:46so the trial week for me worked out really well in my favour,

0:31:46 > 0:31:49and it's the best I could've hoped for.

0:31:49 > 0:31:51Finding out how much he could earn down under

0:31:51 > 0:31:54had laid Andrew's financial concerns to rest.

0:31:54 > 0:31:57Totally changed my whole perspective towards Australia,

0:31:57 > 0:31:59because I thought there'd be no way

0:31:59 > 0:32:01we could actually afford to go there.

0:32:01 > 0:32:04When he voted for Australia at the end of the week,

0:32:04 > 0:32:06it looked like it was all systems go.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08I was excited.

0:32:08 > 0:32:10I mean, I was already picking houses out in my mind

0:32:10 > 0:32:13and working out how to pack all our stuff in Scotland.

0:32:13 > 0:32:17I was, like, really happy and excited

0:32:17 > 0:32:19thinking that we were going to move

0:32:19 > 0:32:20and see all our family every day.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23It was great to actually get to the end of that trial week

0:32:23 > 0:32:25and say, "Right, next step, Australia."

0:32:27 > 0:32:29It appeared a move could be happening

0:32:29 > 0:32:32faster than the family thought when the company Andrew had met

0:32:32 > 0:32:34during the trial week invited him for an interview.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36It was a very, very positive interview,

0:32:36 > 0:32:37to the point where,

0:32:37 > 0:32:40"When you start, you'll be doing this and you'll be doing that,"

0:32:40 > 0:32:42and I honestly thought I had got the job,

0:32:42 > 0:32:45and that changed my whole vision from that point.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47We left Australia on a high,

0:32:47 > 0:32:50thinking that we'd achieved what we'd set out to do.

0:32:50 > 0:32:54Saying goodbye to her family wasn't the usual tear-fest for Leah.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56Even my uncle was, like, high-fiving me on the side,

0:32:56 > 0:32:57like, "See you soon."

0:32:57 > 0:32:59On the plane back to Scotland,

0:32:59 > 0:33:03it was all sort of forward thinking of, "What do we do next?"

0:33:03 > 0:33:05It was sort of like he had already got the job.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07The couple returned to Scotland

0:33:07 > 0:33:09convinced it was just a matter of time

0:33:09 > 0:33:11before they returned down under.

0:33:11 > 0:33:13I was waiting on a call when I came back here

0:33:13 > 0:33:16and thought that was us, and if I'd have got that news,

0:33:16 > 0:33:18then we would've just packed up and went.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22Then the waiting game began.

0:33:22 > 0:33:26I was making him check his e-mail every hour.

0:33:26 > 0:33:27Had we missed it?

0:33:27 > 0:33:29It was even a case of, like, checking the phone,

0:33:29 > 0:33:30if it was working.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33- And they made us wait quite a bit, didn't they?- Mm.

0:33:33 > 0:33:37After a tense ten days, word finally came through.

0:33:37 > 0:33:38One morning I woke up

0:33:38 > 0:33:40and there's this e-mail sat waiting for me.

0:33:40 > 0:33:43But it wasn't the news Andrew had been expecting.

0:33:43 > 0:33:47In the end, the company had decided to recruit someone internally.

0:33:47 > 0:33:50That was hard, and then I had to sort of break it to Leah,

0:33:50 > 0:33:52"I've heard something and it's not good news."

0:33:52 > 0:33:54And, yeah, that was quite hard.

0:33:54 > 0:33:56Leah was devastated.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58You know, you were given this sort of hope

0:33:58 > 0:34:00and then it was quickly taken away.

0:34:00 > 0:34:02She very much saw it as this was going to happen,

0:34:02 > 0:34:06so it was terrible when we found out that it wasn't going to happen.

0:34:06 > 0:34:08It was a crushing blow for Andrew.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11I think it knocked Andrew's confidence quite a lot.

0:34:11 > 0:34:15I mean, he would never say so, but I think he thought, you know,

0:34:15 > 0:34:17it was a winning thing the whole time,

0:34:17 > 0:34:21and then it stopped, and I think he felt a little bit...

0:34:21 > 0:34:24I don't know, deflated?

0:34:24 > 0:34:26It definitely left me deflated afterwards.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30Andrew believes he lost out because he didn't have a visa,

0:34:30 > 0:34:32but he's been reluctant to apply for one

0:34:32 > 0:34:35without the offer of a job down under.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38I don't think you get a lot of change out of about £4,000,

0:34:38 > 0:34:42and you've got to start using it within a certain amount of time,

0:34:42 > 0:34:44so it's almost a case of getting this visa

0:34:44 > 0:34:49and then just going whether you've got a job or not.

0:34:49 > 0:34:52But then the catch-22 kind of comes in because

0:34:52 > 0:34:54I've got to support the family,

0:34:54 > 0:34:57and if I'm not able to support them, what do we do?

0:34:57 > 0:34:59And that's a real stopping point for me.

0:34:59 > 0:35:02But Leah believes it's a risk worth taking.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07And it just comes down to the same thing every time,

0:35:07 > 0:35:09is that we just have to take a chance.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11Do we do it or...?

0:35:11 > 0:35:13Marlee and Brodie are on Mum's side.

0:35:13 > 0:35:18For us to move, I think my dad needs to say yes to go and,

0:35:18 > 0:35:21like, just agree with it.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24I really, really want to move to Australia.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31Disappointed but not defeated,

0:35:31 > 0:35:34Leah is refusing to relinquish her dream.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37Every night when I come home from work,

0:35:37 > 0:35:40it's almost guaranteed there'll be some mention of Australia

0:35:40 > 0:35:43within about the first 15 minutes of walking in the door,

0:35:43 > 0:35:45so it's definitely not been put on the back burner.

0:35:45 > 0:35:47I want to make her happy.

0:35:47 > 0:35:49That's the one thing I know that would make her happy,

0:35:49 > 0:35:52so it's definitely something we're still pursuing.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55The drive for down under dominated family life

0:35:55 > 0:35:57until in November 2013...

0:35:59 > 0:36:02In amongst all the sort of Australia stuff,

0:36:02 > 0:36:04Leah fell pregnant.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06It was a time of mixed emotions for Leah.

0:36:06 > 0:36:09It was sort of a happy time but it was a sad time

0:36:09 > 0:36:12because happy that we were having another little baby,

0:36:12 > 0:36:15but sad because in the back of my head it was like,

0:36:15 > 0:36:18"Five people going to Australia is never going to happen."

0:36:20 > 0:36:23And then she lost the baby, and then that was really hard.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26It was a very, very difficult time.

0:36:26 > 0:36:30- It's kind of stopped us a little bit in our tracks with Australia.- Mm.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35Yeah. It's very difficult.

0:36:35 > 0:36:37But the miscarriage had convinced Leah

0:36:37 > 0:36:39she really did want another child.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41When she fell pregnant again a year later,

0:36:41 > 0:36:44thoughts of home resurfaced stronger than ever.

0:36:46 > 0:36:49I really wanted my last child to be born in Australia.

0:36:49 > 0:36:52I wanted to experience that feeling of being pregnant

0:36:52 > 0:36:53with all my family around me.

0:36:53 > 0:36:55The drive for me to go back to Australia

0:36:55 > 0:36:56really became paramount.

0:36:56 > 0:36:57Like, I wanted to get back home,

0:36:57 > 0:37:02and...it didn't happen like that, so...

0:37:02 > 0:37:03With Leah feeling down,

0:37:03 > 0:37:06the couple's relationship suffered too.

0:37:06 > 0:37:08I get a bit low when I'm pregnant,

0:37:08 > 0:37:11just because I'm away from everybody and...

0:37:12 > 0:37:15- And I get it tighter then. - You get it tighter. Yeah, you do.

0:37:15 > 0:37:17He probably gets a lot of abuse from me,

0:37:17 > 0:37:19and a lot of love as well,

0:37:19 > 0:37:24but...it's quite hard to go through all that with...

0:37:24 > 0:37:26without your family around you.

0:37:26 > 0:37:29It's hard for her, and again, I just want to support and be there.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36Tilly Clanahan arrived in June 2015.

0:37:36 > 0:37:39It was like she had always been part of our little family,

0:37:39 > 0:37:40and there's always been a place for her.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43At first, Marlee had doubts about the new arrival.

0:37:43 > 0:37:46I was sort of, like, anxious

0:37:46 > 0:37:50because I thought that my mum wouldn't spend as much time

0:37:50 > 0:37:54with me any more and that Tilly would just get in the way,

0:37:54 > 0:37:56but when Tilly was born, I was really happy,

0:37:56 > 0:38:00and now that she's here, it's fun to be with her.

0:38:00 > 0:38:03Brodie is delighted with the new addition to the family.

0:38:03 > 0:38:10My little sister Tilly is funny, she's pretty and she makes smiles.

0:38:10 > 0:38:13TILLY CRIES

0:38:13 > 0:38:15Well, most of the time, that is.

0:38:15 > 0:38:19I don't like Tilly when she cries and burps.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21- OVER SPEAKERS:- 'Oh! She's smiling!'

0:38:21 > 0:38:23Finally!

0:38:24 > 0:38:28Leah was delighted when her mum flew to Scotland to help with the baby.

0:38:28 > 0:38:29It was great.

0:38:29 > 0:38:33I got some wonderful photos of her playing with the kids

0:38:33 > 0:38:36and spending time with them before Tilly arrived.

0:38:36 > 0:38:38But the visit was short-lived.

0:38:38 > 0:38:40When her mum returned to Australia,

0:38:40 > 0:38:42Leah was once more plunged into despair.

0:38:42 > 0:38:45You're on this massive high cos you've got everyone around you,

0:38:45 > 0:38:48and then they're just ripped away and you have no-one.

0:38:48 > 0:38:49- Mm.- So...

0:38:51 > 0:38:54Having Tilly has strengthened Leah's resolve to make the move.

0:38:54 > 0:38:59It's almost like we're complete now and now is the time to go.

0:38:59 > 0:39:01The reason to relocate is further reinforced

0:39:01 > 0:39:04by the fear Marlee may soon outgrow the move.

0:39:04 > 0:39:06She's creating her network here, you know.

0:39:06 > 0:39:10She's got her environment and her friends, and...

0:39:10 > 0:39:13to take her away from that now seems really upsetting to her.

0:39:13 > 0:39:17Whereas to me, it's upsetting not to have her involved

0:39:17 > 0:39:21in an Australian life, so I guess the younger they are,

0:39:21 > 0:39:23it's easier to relocate them.

0:39:23 > 0:39:26But with Andrew's hectic work schedule,

0:39:26 > 0:39:28there's little time for making plans.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31Andrew's taking a lot more on at work. He doesn't switch off.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33You know, we hardly see him.

0:39:33 > 0:39:35He leaves at seven, comes home at seven.

0:39:35 > 0:39:38And I always start thinking, "I need to start pursuing this."

0:39:38 > 0:39:40What you find is I'm generally that tired

0:39:40 > 0:39:43from all the different things I'm doing with my work

0:39:43 > 0:39:45that it generally just doesn't happen.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47And with three children in tow,

0:39:47 > 0:39:51Leah is also finding it difficult to move things forward.

0:39:51 > 0:39:54Children become your routine and routine becomes your life,

0:39:54 > 0:39:59and the calling to go home and the homesickness doesn't go away,

0:39:59 > 0:40:02but it's kind of just replaced with everyday life.

0:40:02 > 0:40:06As time goes on, Leah is becoming more and more frustrated.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09I worry that I'm getting resentful.

0:40:09 > 0:40:11I worry that I'm changing.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14I don't feel like I'm the same Aussie girl

0:40:14 > 0:40:16that got on a plane, like, 12 years ago.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19There's always that desire to go back home,

0:40:19 > 0:40:23so I find it really frustrating that...

0:40:23 > 0:40:24he just won't take a chance.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27I suspect that if I didn't have the kids,

0:40:27 > 0:40:30it was just the two of us, I wouldn't be so bothered about it.

0:40:30 > 0:40:33I've got to continue to provide,

0:40:33 > 0:40:35and the thought of being out of employment,

0:40:35 > 0:40:37that's probably what really puts me off.

0:40:41 > 0:40:42A surprise gift from down under

0:40:42 > 0:40:46has recently breathed new life into Leah's dream.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48My family have been wanting to see the baby,

0:40:48 > 0:40:51so my auntie and uncle have paid for us to come over

0:40:51 > 0:40:52at Christmas time.

0:40:52 > 0:40:55So, Tilly will get to experience her first Australian Christmas,

0:40:55 > 0:41:00and it's also an opportunity for us to bring some sort of closure

0:41:00 > 0:41:02to the Australian dream,

0:41:02 > 0:41:05to try and see if it is a possibility,

0:41:05 > 0:41:08and if it's not, then we need to start...

0:41:12 > 0:41:16..I don't know, making a life in Scotland for good.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19Strong emotional ties on both sides of the world

0:41:19 > 0:41:22have Leah torn.

0:41:22 > 0:41:24When you're homesick, it never goes away.

0:41:24 > 0:41:25"Do I go home?

0:41:25 > 0:41:27"Do I be selfish and break our family up

0:41:27 > 0:41:29"and take the kids back with me?"

0:41:30 > 0:41:32I think about that a lot,

0:41:32 > 0:41:35and the one thing that stops that is Andrew.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38I would never do that to him, and I don't want to leave him.

0:41:38 > 0:41:41And I'm not going to force him to go either,

0:41:41 > 0:41:46so I guess I just have to hope that he sees what I see.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51We both want the same thing. The goal is the same.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54Both definitely on the same paths,

0:41:54 > 0:41:58but my path is maybe just slightly slower because I want to make sure

0:41:58 > 0:42:03that I'm not taking a massive jump into not having employment.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05Andrew may be ruled by his head,

0:42:05 > 0:42:09but in his heart he knows where he wants his family to be.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12I remember the first time I went out to Australia.

0:42:12 > 0:42:15I very quickly saw kids out playing.

0:42:15 > 0:42:18Over there, there seems to be a big outside lifestyle there,

0:42:18 > 0:42:21and I thought, "I would love my kids to grow up in that."

0:42:21 > 0:42:24For Leah, the trip home could be her last chance

0:42:24 > 0:42:27of turning her dream into reality.

0:42:27 > 0:42:30Six o'clock and the sun was going down

0:42:30 > 0:42:32and it was beautiful and it was warm,

0:42:32 > 0:42:33and we were sat on the beach

0:42:33 > 0:42:36and Andrew was running around and running in the water

0:42:36 > 0:42:39and I was photographing them all.

0:42:39 > 0:42:43You know, it was like that's how life was supposed to be,

0:42:43 > 0:42:46and it was almost like we got a taste of it

0:42:46 > 0:42:47and I got to see what it would be like.

0:42:47 > 0:42:51And, you know, that would just be my dream moment,

0:42:51 > 0:42:52to experience something like that again.

0:42:53 > 0:42:56After two years of trying,

0:42:56 > 0:42:59Leah has yet to achieve the results she wanted,

0:42:59 > 0:43:03but an impending trip down under could be all that's needed

0:43:03 > 0:43:05to seal the deal.

0:43:05 > 0:43:08On whichever side of the world they go on to call home,

0:43:08 > 0:43:11we wish the Clanahans the very best for the future.
