0:00:02 > 0:00:05If all you wanted in life was to spend quality time with

0:00:05 > 0:00:09the people you love, how far would you go to achieve your dream?

0:00:09 > 0:00:13In 2014, the Bone family were considering swapping

0:00:13 > 0:00:17their life in Scotland for a new start in Australia.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Today, one year on,

0:00:19 > 0:00:23we'll find out if they've gone ahead with the life-changing move.

0:00:23 > 0:00:27Back in 2014, the Bones were struggling to balance work

0:00:27 > 0:00:28and family life.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Dad's not here when we come in from school.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34Dad's not up when we leave for school in the morning.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36They believed Australia could be the answer,

0:00:36 > 0:00:39and a trial week down under didn't disappoint.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41No way!

0:00:42 > 0:00:44That's just amazing.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46So, 12 months later, have the Bones made it

0:00:46 > 0:00:49- to the other side of the world? - What do we do now?

0:00:49 > 0:00:52Is the dream over now, before it's even started?

0:01:16 > 0:01:18In the last 20 years,

0:01:18 > 0:01:22over 600,000 British citizens have moved to Australia.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26They are drawn by the lure of the country's 10,500 beaches,

0:01:26 > 0:01:29an average nine hours' sunshine every day

0:01:29 > 0:01:32and the outdoor lifestyle that comes as a result.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37On the surface, the Bone family had a comfortable life

0:01:37 > 0:01:39in a beautiful part of the world.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41But mum Sarah believed it came at a price

0:01:41 > 0:01:44she was no longer willing to pay.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48A year ago, the family spent a week experiencing everything Australia

0:01:48 > 0:01:52could offer, before deciding whether to move there for good.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56Today, we'll catch up with the family and find out where

0:01:56 > 0:01:59in the world they now call home.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02The Bones' trial week in Perth began with more than 10,000 miles

0:02:02 > 0:02:06in the air, but they'd taken the 20-hour journey in their stride.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12It's certainly better than we expected, I think.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15The kids were great on it. So it's doable.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18It was the family's first time on Australian soil

0:02:18 > 0:02:20and they were raring to go.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Stepping out of the plane was really day one of our adventure

0:02:23 > 0:02:27and our prospects of looking into options for a better life.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29It just feels so exciting.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32I just cannot wait to see what's on offer in Perth.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36Ahead lay a week that could change the family's future forever.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42In 2014, home for the Bones was the village of Ochiltree

0:02:42 > 0:02:44in East Ayrshire, in Scotland.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50Mum Sarah lived with Dad Max, Rhiannon, then 15, Cara,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53who was aged nine, and Hayden, who was four.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55We have a really comfortable life, financially.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Beautiful house, beautiful children.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01It was a long was from the life Sarah once knew.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05Having fallen pregnant with Rhiannon at 16, she found herself alone.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09I had nowhere to stay, and I had to make an application as homeless

0:03:09 > 0:03:10through the local authority.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12To be a parent, a single parent,

0:03:12 > 0:03:16at 16 and to be facing homelessness was pretty scary.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20Determined to build a better future for herself and her daughter,

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Sarah returned to education.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26I really wanted to kind of show people that I had more in me.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29So, whilst being in a hostel accommodation,

0:03:29 > 0:03:31I started my degree

0:03:31 > 0:03:35to turn my life about, for myself and my daughter.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37It's only now that I'm older that I've seen how she struggled,

0:03:37 > 0:03:41but she's done such an amazing job, because I never saw her struggles.

0:03:41 > 0:03:4415 years on, life was very different.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48With financial security, a loving husband and a home of her own,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51everything looked perfect...

0:03:51 > 0:03:52but it wasn't.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Dad's not here when we come in from school.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Dad's not up when we leave for school in the morning.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02Max's job with a pizza company meant long and late shifts

0:04:02 > 0:04:04away from the family.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06Where we do spend time as a family, it's great.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10We'll have a fantastic time, but it's few and far between.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12I will get annoyed that Max is working,

0:04:12 > 0:04:16and I know that it's not his fault, but it still becomes really

0:04:16 > 0:04:19frustrating and it just starts a bit of tension,

0:04:19 > 0:04:23and then usually ends up spiralling into something bigger than it was.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26Max agreed things had to change.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29We also want to have time at the end of a working day where you can

0:04:29 > 0:04:32have your downtime, have your fun time.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35For more than five years, both he and Sarah had felt Australia

0:04:35 > 0:04:38could offer their family the ideal life.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Whether it be naively from watching Home And Away and Neighbours,

0:04:41 > 0:04:43and things like that, as a young person, growing up,

0:04:43 > 0:04:46you have these images, or a vision in your head.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49It's something inside both of us that's just burning away,

0:04:49 > 0:04:52and we just need to look at this seriously.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55But Max also had concerns about moving his family to

0:04:55 > 0:04:57the other side of the world.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01I think it's a great idea. You know, the weather's great,

0:05:01 > 0:05:05the lifestyle looks brilliant, but unless we can get out there

0:05:05 > 0:05:10and get decent jobs, it would just be crazy for us to be that stupid.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Seeking the perfect family life,

0:05:12 > 0:05:16the couple were pinning their hopes on a country they'd never visited.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19This weekend in Perth is going to be huge for us.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23It really is, for the dream, make or break.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25If it doesn't work out, I think I'll be absolutely gutted.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38The family spent their trial week

0:05:38 > 0:05:41in Western Australia's capital city, Perth.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Home for the week was this modern three-bedroom house and,

0:05:44 > 0:05:48as a first taste of Aussie living, it didn't disappoint.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53Wow. This is fantastic. Stairs, double.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56- This is gorgeous.- Two storey. - This is absolutely gorgeous.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59The whole family could imagine chilling outdoors.

0:05:59 > 0:06:04- This is a big space.- There's the barbie. Fantastic. Aussie barbie.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07But the realisation their dream could live or die over

0:06:07 > 0:06:11the next week wasn't far from Sarah and Max's thoughts.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14This week in Australia is make or break for us.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18Our concerns are the financial aspects.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21It's a huge, huge thing we're thinking of doing here.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31Back in 2014, the Bones were living in a four-bedroom house

0:06:31 > 0:06:34in the village of Ochiltree in East Ayrshire.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37We have the dream house, and it's going to be really,

0:06:37 > 0:06:39really hard to leave.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43The family had a budget of £300,000 for a home in Australia

0:06:43 > 0:06:46and a clear idea of what they'd like.

0:06:46 > 0:06:47It would need to be four bedrooms.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52Our kids would never cope, having to go back and share a bedroom.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54I've got a bee in my bonnet about a pool.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57That's the swinging point for my three children, to have a pool.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59Even for me, the big one's the pool.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01I'd love a pool.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05I think if we somehow couldn't afford a four-bedroom house

0:07:05 > 0:07:08or the dream property in a nice area, myself and Sarah would

0:07:08 > 0:07:12really need to sit down and have a long, hard discussion about

0:07:12 > 0:07:15whether it was actually worth moving to Australia or not.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24To give the Bones an idea of what was on offer in Perth,

0:07:24 > 0:07:27we showed them three properties.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Two on-budget, and one which could be their dream home.

0:07:30 > 0:07:36The search began in Butler, a suburb 25 miles north of Perth.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40Did this four-bedroom house get the day off on the right foot?

0:07:40 > 0:07:43- It's darker than I thought. - Oh, it is dark, isn't it?

0:07:43 > 0:07:47- Quite small as well, isn't it? - Yeah.- Really dingy and dark.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49First impressions, wouldn't be

0:07:49 > 0:07:53what I'd hoped to see in an Australian house.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57It wasn't a great start. But spirits brightened with the kitchen.

0:07:57 > 0:08:04What we have got through here? Oh. It's a kitchen. Ooh. Nice.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Oh, wow, right. OK.

0:08:06 > 0:08:07But not for long.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11I don't like the corrugated iron. That's a big bugbear.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13Max was getting worried.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Yeah, this is quite... A wee bit concerning now

0:08:16 > 0:08:19if this is the standard that is maybe the only option

0:08:19 > 0:08:20for us in Australia.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23That's isn't good enough.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Outdoors, though, the garden's dining area was a hit.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Oh, this is so nice.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31- Nice, isn't it?- So nice.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33Oh. Do you feel the breeze?

0:08:33 > 0:08:36I definitely see myself sitting at that with an orange

0:08:36 > 0:08:38juice and a croissant in the morning, before work.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42While the garden had the space the Bones were looking for,

0:08:42 > 0:08:47the house's interior had left everyone underwhelmed.

0:08:47 > 0:08:51And they worried their £300,000 budget may not even meet

0:08:51 > 0:08:53the asking price.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55I'm really nervous about turning this card over.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58- If it's at the top of our budget... My stomach's turning.- Me too.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02- Right, Rhiannon.- Ready? - Fingers crossed, guys.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07- Oh, my goodness.- Wow. That's...

0:09:10 > 0:09:13£267,000.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16It may have been £33,000 below budget,

0:09:16 > 0:09:19but that wasn't enough to impress Max.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21That's extortionate.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25- Extortionate.- Yeah. - Absolute rip-off!

0:09:25 > 0:09:29Oh, no. That's really scary for where we go from here.

0:09:29 > 0:09:30I feel really disappointed

0:09:30 > 0:09:33and quite worried about what the rest of the day holds.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38With their day off to such a disappointing start,

0:09:38 > 0:09:42was Sarah and Max's vision of a life down under already in trouble?

0:09:50 > 0:09:53Property number two was also in the Butler area.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56This spacious four-bedroom home should have been just what

0:09:56 > 0:09:58the family were after,

0:09:58 > 0:10:01but did it impress enough to boost their morale?

0:10:01 > 0:10:03- Oh, wow! - ALL: Ooh!

0:10:03 > 0:10:06Look what's in here, Hayden.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- Do you like this room?- This is...

0:10:09 > 0:10:12- lovely.- This is lovely. - This is really nice.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14It was a much more promising start.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18And the master bedroom didn't disappoint either.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21- Oh, Sarah! - There's walk-in wardrobes. Two!

0:10:21 > 0:10:24- SHE GASPS - We've got half each.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27- Oh. Nice.- What have we got here? - Nice.- Wow.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30This is a huge space as well, isn't it?

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Toilet.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35- Double shower.- Look at that!

0:10:35 > 0:10:36Oh, this is... This is big!

0:10:36 > 0:10:39This is the kind of bathroom that we would like to have.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42This house seemed to be delivering on all fronts.

0:10:42 > 0:10:43So nice.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46- Look at this space.- What?!

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- Oh, wow!- That's amazing. - This is the dream.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54This feels as if this could be the one.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57- Oh, another bedroom.- Ooh. - Oh, this is big as well, isn't it?

0:10:57 > 0:11:01And Max was quick to spot something which indicated this

0:11:01 > 0:11:04could've been the Bones' home from home.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07This is clearly meant to be. This is our house.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09That was a sign. It's meant to be.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12BAGPIPES PLAY

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Outside lay another surprise.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23- Oh.- Oh, that's amazing. - It is amazing!

0:11:25 > 0:11:27- This is lovely.- This. You can imagine this.- It's lovely.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29This is the dream, isn't it?

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Sitting with a glass of wine, having a chat about our day,

0:11:32 > 0:11:34after school, everybody.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37Just catching up and chilling.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40I think this would be worth working really, really, really hard for.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Yeah.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44The house seemed tailor-made for the family,

0:11:44 > 0:11:47but was it somewhere they could afford to call home,

0:11:47 > 0:11:50with their £300,000 budget?

0:11:52 > 0:11:55I mean, for me, I'm feeling almost nervous

0:11:55 > 0:11:57that it's beyond what we can afford.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Because this is the house I want. This is a house we want.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03- Ready, Cara?- The moment of truth.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12- Oh! - THE CHILDREN GASP

0:12:12 > 0:12:13No way!

0:12:13 > 0:12:16That's so surprising.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20It was only £17,000 over budget.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23As long as the job situation goes well,

0:12:23 > 0:12:25wow! With a pool.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27- That's amazing.- That is amazing.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30This house had knocked the family for six

0:12:30 > 0:12:32and emotions were running high.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36Me and my mum have came from a house that's like, you know, two bedrooms.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40It wasn't very nice at all, and she's just done amazing.

0:12:40 > 0:12:44It's just amazing. Wee Rhiannon's getting all emotional.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47I just feel, like, so proud of my mum,

0:12:47 > 0:12:51to have came to this place. Sorry.

0:12:53 > 0:12:54It's just amazing.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59Everyone had fallen for this house, but there was still

0:12:59 > 0:13:02one more to see - the potential dream home we'd found them.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09The final stop was in Quinns Rocks -

0:13:09 > 0:13:12a popular residential suburb just a 30-minute commute

0:13:12 > 0:13:14from Perth city centre.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18This modern new build was just a stone's throw away from the beach,

0:13:18 > 0:13:22but did it have the wow factor of property number two?

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Oh, wow, this is nice.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28- Oh, it's dead bright, isn't it? - Isn't it?

0:13:28 > 0:13:30That sounded promising.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Oh, this is huge.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34- Whoa.- Oh, wow.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36- This is absolutely huge.- Gorgeous.

0:13:37 > 0:13:38What's in here?

0:13:38 > 0:13:40SHE GASPS

0:13:40 > 0:13:42No way!

0:13:42 > 0:13:44SHE LAUGHS

0:13:44 > 0:13:45- What?!- Wow!

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Look at the size!

0:13:47 > 0:13:50This is a bedroom!

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Sarah was bowled over,

0:13:52 > 0:13:55and it wasn't long before Max had found his dream spot too.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01- Oh, cool, there's another bed! - It's incredible!

0:14:01 > 0:14:03That's awesome, isn't it?

0:14:04 > 0:14:06Aw, man.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08I want this house. I just want this house.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Oh, wow.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15- THEY GASP - Whoa.

0:14:15 > 0:14:16- Look at this area.- Whoa.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18Aw, wow. Big TV.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22This house had surpassed everyone's expectations,

0:14:22 > 0:14:25and outside was the icing on the cake.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28No way!

0:14:28 > 0:14:29SHE GASPS

0:14:30 > 0:14:33Aw, yeah. You could relax in here, couldn't you?

0:14:33 > 0:14:35Aw, yeah.

0:14:35 > 0:14:39This is the dream, isn't it? Just to be able to sit out your back door

0:14:39 > 0:14:41- and relax.- Yep.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43This property had delivered everything

0:14:43 > 0:14:46the Bones could want from a dream home.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50But how close did it come to their £300,000 budget?

0:14:50 > 0:14:53Right, will we turn it over?

0:14:53 > 0:14:54- How much?- Ready...

0:14:57 > 0:14:59- £392,000...- £392,000.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01- 705.- ..705.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03Wow.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07It was £92,000 over budget, but...

0:15:07 > 0:15:10It's less than I thought it was going to be.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12..with the right jobs and salary down under,

0:15:12 > 0:15:14this house could have been within reach.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17But Rhiannon had her heart set on another home.

0:15:17 > 0:15:22For us, as a family, the space in here is just too much

0:15:22 > 0:15:25and over the other properties...

0:15:25 > 0:15:26all was perfect.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33The Bones' search for Perth property had brought mixed results.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36House number one was under budget,

0:15:36 > 0:15:38but the dark interiors didn't impress.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43Property two had plenty of space and went down well with everyone.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49And home number three really was a dream home,

0:15:49 > 0:15:51but perhaps just too spacious for Rhiannon.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56So when it came to the vote, did the Bones choose home or away?

0:15:56 > 0:15:59What a wonderful day visiting the houses in Australia.

0:15:59 > 0:16:00Now it's time to vote.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12- Australia!- Australia!

0:16:12 > 0:16:14- Unsure?- No way!

0:16:14 > 0:16:15Wow.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19The price of the properties compared to the house we have at home...

0:16:19 > 0:16:21They're really expensive.

0:16:21 > 0:16:22At least you never voted for UK.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24- SHE LAUGHS - That's positive.

0:16:24 > 0:16:25The dream's not dead.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33Sarah's undecided vote had surprised everyone.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Was she slowly realising Australia might not meet

0:16:36 > 0:16:38her expectations?

0:16:39 > 0:16:43It was Cara's tenth birthday, but any celebrations

0:16:43 > 0:16:45would be short-lived unless Sarah and Max

0:16:45 > 0:16:47found the right jobs down under.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52Sarah was the main visa applicant.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55Back in the UK, she was a qualified community worker.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00I love this job. I have worked in social care

0:17:00 > 0:17:02and with people experiencing homelessness

0:17:02 > 0:17:05or threatened with homelessness for ten years.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08It was a job she knew the value of first hand.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11If it hadn't been for supports and information that I had got

0:17:11 > 0:17:14going through the homeless process, I would never have been able

0:17:14 > 0:17:16to achieve what I've achieved today.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19While Max enjoyed his job as area manager for a pizza chain,

0:17:19 > 0:17:21the hours weren't ideal.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25It's a lot of evening work and weekend work.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27Again, there's a lot of early starts as well.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35To check out Sarah's work opportunities in Perth,

0:17:35 > 0:17:38we arranged for her to visit St Bartholomew's House -

0:17:38 > 0:17:41a shelter looking after 600 people

0:17:41 > 0:17:44at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47She was met by manager and expat Nina Crosland.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49Welcome to St Bart's.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55Sarah was keen to know if her qualifications from the UK

0:17:55 > 0:17:57would be relevant down under.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01I have a House SVQ 3 in Health and Social Care.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03I have a PDA in Housing Law and Advice,

0:18:03 > 0:18:05but my degree is in Business Studies,

0:18:05 > 0:18:09so that's a worry - that my skills won't be able to transfer.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13They change the jobs on the list of what they're actually looking for

0:18:13 > 0:18:15at times, so, welfare worker, I believe, is on there.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18So, I think, you know, you can really look to consider

0:18:18 > 0:18:20whether that's something that you can fall under.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22We've had a number of people come from the UK

0:18:22 > 0:18:24and transition really easily.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27That was encouraging news for Sarah.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Meanwhile, across town, Max was getting the low-down

0:18:30 > 0:18:33on opportunities in the restaurant sector from Andrew Thomas...

0:18:33 > 0:18:36- Come on in.- That's great, thank you.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39..operations director of a speciality coffee shop chain.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41'How would somebody get into a business like this?'

0:18:41 > 0:18:44Would they start at entry level, or...?

0:18:44 > 0:18:47As I understand it, you kind of spent nine-odd years

0:18:47 > 0:18:51- with a pizza business and five years as an area manager?- Yeah.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53The opportunity and the availability for those positions

0:18:53 > 0:18:54definitely exists.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59It looked like Max's experience would pay off,

0:18:59 > 0:19:02but would his shift patterns be any better than at home?

0:19:02 > 0:19:06Leaving at four, you know, half past four, five o'clock,

0:19:06 > 0:19:09- no-one frowns upon that.- Yeah. - I see my kids in the morning

0:19:09 > 0:19:12- and have dinner every night. - That sounds great.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14Early finishes meant Max would get more of the family time

0:19:14 > 0:19:16he'd been missing out on.

0:19:16 > 0:19:21But if a move was to work, salary for the couple would be key too.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Back at St Bart's, Sarah was finding out how much

0:19:24 > 0:19:25she could earn in a year.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28You can be considering something between 52,000

0:19:28 > 0:19:31as a starting point, up to 57,000.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34You could consider a team leader role or a coordinator position

0:19:34 > 0:19:38which would take you up to roughly about...sort of

0:19:38 > 0:19:3970,000.

0:19:39 > 0:19:44That was a potential annual salary of almost £39,000 -

0:19:44 > 0:19:47nearly double what Sarah was earning in the UK.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Very, very impressed, and it makes me very hopeful

0:19:49 > 0:19:52of opportunities if I was to come over to Australia.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55But Sarah knew unless Max got a positive result

0:19:55 > 0:19:58on the earnings front, the move may never happen.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01If he can't secure a good income or an increased salary,

0:20:01 > 0:20:05or at least the same as what he does, then it's not an option.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07So what were Max's prospects?

0:20:08 > 0:20:13The base salary would probably be about 70,000 - 100,000,

0:20:13 > 0:20:15plus superannuation on top of that,

0:20:15 > 0:20:18so that would be somewhere in the region of about

0:20:18 > 0:20:19£40,000 to £70,000.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21OK. It's a good wage.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27That compared favourably with Max's salary in the UK,

0:20:27 > 0:20:29but he still had some concerns.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34Very happy about it, but it's just the danger of, you know,

0:20:34 > 0:20:36- that's what I COULD achieve.- Yeah.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38And it's whether or not... Again, moving over here first time,

0:20:38 > 0:20:41whether I WOULD achieve that. It's a big risk...

0:20:41 > 0:20:44- Big risk to take. - ..no matter what the situation is.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46We roll the dice and we see what happens.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51It's been a very important day for finding out about work prospects

0:20:51 > 0:20:53and this is how we're going to vote.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03- Undecided.- Australia!

0:21:03 > 0:21:07I love my job in the UK, but I just think there's so much more

0:21:07 > 0:21:09opportunities for career progression,

0:21:09 > 0:21:13- and the salary is much more for me, here in Australia.- Yep.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16I think there's a huge amount of possibilities here.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18I just need to find out just a wee bit more.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30Max was still playing the cautious card,

0:21:30 > 0:21:33so would a rare family day out experiencing Australia's

0:21:33 > 0:21:35great outdoors win him around?

0:21:36 > 0:21:39The Bones visited Yanchep National Park -

0:21:39 > 0:21:41the perfect place to get up close and personal

0:21:41 > 0:21:44with some Australian wildlife.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46Oh, koalas!

0:21:46 > 0:21:48- Oh!- Oh, wow, look.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51Who's going to be first to see if we can see any?

0:21:51 > 0:21:52Look!

0:21:52 > 0:21:54Hayden, do you see it?

0:21:54 > 0:21:56- Yes.- Sleeping!

0:21:56 > 0:21:59- Aww.- How cute is that? - Absolutely gorgeous.

0:21:59 > 0:22:00It's sleeping.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03SHE GASPS

0:22:03 > 0:22:04It's awesome.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09Mingling with the marsupials seemed to have cast a spell on Max.

0:22:10 > 0:22:11That's incredible.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15It's just a different world. It's so cool.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17This is incredible.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20- BOTH:- They're so cute!

0:22:22 > 0:22:26It was a rare chance for the family to spend time together with Dad.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28Having Max here is really strange for us, as a family.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31Usually we tend to do things as a family of four

0:22:31 > 0:22:32when Max is working.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35So it's been really fantastic.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37It had been a day of simple pleasures,

0:22:37 > 0:22:40but it looked like it could have been a turning point for Max.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43Today was great. Best day out I've had for a while.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46I think it's still going to be a big risk coming out,

0:22:46 > 0:22:48but seeing today...

0:22:48 > 0:22:50I'm starting to feel as if the risk is definitely worthwhile.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53To have that time, hopefully on a regular basis,

0:22:53 > 0:22:54would be fantastic.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57So, based on lifestyle,

0:22:57 > 0:23:00did the family choose Australia or the UK?

0:23:00 > 0:23:02What an amazing day here at the National Park

0:23:02 > 0:23:04seeing the koalas and the kangaroos.

0:23:04 > 0:23:05Now it's time to vote!

0:23:14 > 0:23:17- ALL:- Australia!

0:23:17 > 0:23:20THEY LAUGH

0:23:25 > 0:23:28Their time in Perth had shown Sarah and Max

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Australia could offer the life they wanted.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34Now they needed to see if they could afford it.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38We provided a comparison of costs between the UK and Australia.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40They began with the weekly grocery bill.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Milk's similar.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44Almost double, in fact, more than double

0:23:44 > 0:23:45for brown bread.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48Ooh.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51So, yoghurts we go through a lot of in the house.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55It's over four times more expensive

0:23:55 > 0:23:57for yoghurts.

0:23:57 > 0:24:02So that works out £36.89 more expensive per week.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03Uh-huh, yep.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05And... Which, if we times that by four,

0:24:05 > 0:24:08gives £147.56 per month more.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12- But it doesn't seem unachievable. - No.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15And again, anybody that knows me back at home will know that

0:24:15 > 0:24:19- I'm a bargain hunter.- You like to cling to your bargains. Yeah.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21- I would make it work.- Yeah.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24Sarah was undeterred, but the couple still had to tackle

0:24:24 > 0:24:26the bigger outgoings.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30They base their figures on the second property they'd seen.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Minus 1062.39.

0:24:34 > 0:24:38Equals minus £192.39.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42The family's mortgage payments would have been £200 a month higher

0:24:42 > 0:24:45in Australia and would have meant more than doubling the length

0:24:45 > 0:24:48of their mortgage term.

0:24:48 > 0:24:5130 years, compared to 14 years in the UK.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54- Yeah.- That's...- It's quite disappointing, isn't it?

0:24:54 > 0:24:56- When you look at it. - Very disappointing.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59The couple would be spending £1,200 a year more.

0:24:59 > 0:25:04Adding in their salaries, they would be better off in Australia...

0:25:04 > 0:25:06Combined, £238 per month.

0:25:06 > 0:25:07Which isn't a lot.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09Actually, I feel pretty gutted.

0:25:09 > 0:25:10..but not by much.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13And they felt the increase wasn't worth having to extend

0:25:13 > 0:25:15the term of their mortgage.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18I feel quite flat just now and I just need time to...

0:25:19 > 0:25:21..work this out.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24- But at the moment, I feel quite deflated, actually.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30So, after looking at the figures, it is time to vote.

0:25:40 > 0:25:41- BOTH:- UK.

0:25:41 > 0:25:45I don't think I would ever want to go back to having a 30-year term

0:25:45 > 0:25:47on our mortgage.

0:25:47 > 0:25:48I think it's a no-brainer.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51Financially, we're better off in the UK by a long shot.

0:25:59 > 0:26:02A longer mortgage term meant more time together for the Bones

0:26:02 > 0:26:04would come at a cost.

0:26:04 > 0:26:08And there was the emotional cost of a move to consider too.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10While Hayden was looked after by a childminder,

0:26:10 > 0:26:14the rest of the family sat down to watch messages from home together.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16Hello, Max and Sarah.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19Hello, Rhiannon, Cara and Hayden.

0:26:19 > 0:26:24A good dad, a good husband and a very good son.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27Sarah's a very dedicated and committed member of staff,

0:26:27 > 0:26:29- very enthusiastic.- Really?!

0:26:29 > 0:26:33- I love you guys, but, like... - Yeah, me too, but no...

0:26:33 > 0:26:34- But we're four.- Yeah.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37We're not designed to be a three.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40I'm going to miss Sarah and the kids incredibly,

0:26:40 > 0:26:44and I'm not saying I wouldn't miss Max, but...

0:26:44 > 0:26:46We've been through a lot together.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48I'm sitting here, I can feel myself welling up.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51And I'm going to miss her incredibly. God.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56There's the one part of you that's wishing them all the best

0:26:56 > 0:26:58and obviously it's going to be a new life.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05But it's going to be a new life for us as well.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08- That's hard to take. - My dad doesn't get upset.

0:27:08 > 0:27:09No.

0:27:09 > 0:27:10This is your home and...

0:27:11 > 0:27:17Yeah, I don't think I would enjoy anything that I do as much

0:27:17 > 0:27:19if you weren't there as well.

0:27:20 > 0:27:24You're going to go to Australia and wish you all the very best...

0:27:24 > 0:27:26Be delighted for you.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32Oh, that was hard to see Papa upset, wasn't it?

0:27:32 > 0:27:34Gee-whiz.

0:27:34 > 0:27:35That was hard.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38Certainly our intention isn't to hurt anybody.

0:27:38 > 0:27:42That's the last thing we want to do in the world.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44But watching that video,

0:27:44 > 0:27:47you realise that you are hurting people.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49It's going to be really, really hard to leave the people behind

0:27:49 > 0:27:51that we care about.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54But we need to think of what's best for the family of five.

0:27:56 > 0:28:00I think we've got to do what's best for us as family, but...

0:28:00 > 0:28:04obviously there's more than five of us in our family.

0:28:04 > 0:28:05Sorry.

0:28:10 > 0:28:12Their week had shown the Bones that a move

0:28:12 > 0:28:14to the other side of the world

0:28:14 > 0:28:17would come with a heavy financial and emotional burden.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Had they been persuaded that was a price worth paying

0:28:21 > 0:28:22for a new life down under?

0:28:24 > 0:28:27It's been a roller-coaster week. It's been ups and downs,

0:28:27 > 0:28:29so much information.

0:28:29 > 0:28:33The financial aspect is concerning, but if you take the risk

0:28:33 > 0:28:35and it works out, the rewards are huge.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37But if it doesn't work out...

0:28:37 > 0:28:38Big risk.

0:28:38 > 0:28:39I feel...

0:28:41 > 0:28:45..probably more confused now than what I felt before I came out.

0:28:45 > 0:28:49It's been much more difficult making the decision for today

0:28:49 > 0:28:50than I would ever have thought.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54It's been a roller-coaster of a week.

0:28:54 > 0:28:56Now it's time for the final vote.

0:29:06 > 0:29:07Australia!

0:29:09 > 0:29:10Hayden!

0:29:10 > 0:29:13- Hayden! What's happened to you? - Undecided!

0:29:13 > 0:29:16Do you want to stay at the beach or do you want to stay at home?

0:29:16 > 0:29:17- I don't know.- You don't know?

0:29:17 > 0:29:19THEY LAUGH

0:29:19 > 0:29:21It's Australia!

0:29:21 > 0:29:22I thought you were undecided.

0:29:22 > 0:29:26- Me too.- I changed two seconds ago because I turned round

0:29:26 > 0:29:29and saw you and Hayden and Cara and the sea.

0:29:29 > 0:29:31I was the same. Do you know, standing on the beach,

0:29:31 > 0:29:35I thought, you know, "Life's short.

0:29:35 > 0:29:37"Life is short. Why not take the risk?"

0:29:37 > 0:29:40- I want to go tomorrow! - THEY LAUGH

0:29:40 > 0:29:41I don't want to go home!

0:29:52 > 0:29:55It had been a life-changing week for the Bones,

0:29:55 > 0:29:58and it looked like they were all set to take the leap

0:29:58 > 0:30:01and start afresh on the other side of the world.

0:30:01 > 0:30:06So, one year later, on which side of the world are the Bones living?

0:30:08 > 0:30:11It's April 2015 and the Bones are living in...

0:30:13 > 0:30:15..East Ayrshire in Scotland.

0:30:15 > 0:30:17But not for much longer.

0:30:17 > 0:30:20From the moment they returned home,

0:30:20 > 0:30:23the family were itching to get back down under.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26I arrived back and I thought, "No, I want to go back to Australia."

0:30:26 > 0:30:29The second I landed at the airport, I was convinced.

0:30:29 > 0:30:31I absolutely loved it.

0:30:31 > 0:30:33Their time in Australia

0:30:33 > 0:30:36saw the country capture Sarah and Max's hearts.

0:30:36 > 0:30:38The trial week was amazing,

0:30:38 > 0:30:40much better than I would even have thought.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43We were able to see what Australia really had to offer.

0:30:43 > 0:30:45"We could actually be living this" - it was a scary thought,

0:30:45 > 0:30:48but, God, it was exciting. It was so exciting.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51It gave us the drive to come back and say, "Yep, that's what we want.

0:30:51 > 0:30:52"Let's go for it."

0:30:52 > 0:30:55The couple have been convinced the country could give them

0:30:55 > 0:30:59the normal family life they've been craving.

0:30:59 > 0:31:02The lifestyle in Australia far surpassed the life

0:31:02 > 0:31:05we have here in Ochiltree at the moment.

0:31:05 > 0:31:07You kind of lose track of where you're going here.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10We're coming and going and working different shifts,

0:31:10 > 0:31:12but then, when you take time and go out of that situation,

0:31:12 > 0:31:14you realise how good it is.

0:31:14 > 0:31:18And Australia seemed to have had a transformational effect

0:31:18 > 0:31:20on Rhiannon, Cara and Hayden too.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23You just saw them thriving and changing as young people

0:31:23 > 0:31:27and becoming excited at the prospect of living in a new country.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30I just loved everything about Australia.

0:31:30 > 0:31:34The beaches were amazing, the people were just so, so friendly.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37It was really fun and it was great to be outdoors a lot,

0:31:37 > 0:31:38and the weather was nice and hot.

0:31:38 > 0:31:41You don't need to bring a jumper or jackets

0:31:41 > 0:31:43cos you know it's not going to rain.

0:31:43 > 0:31:45It was like a light switch going on.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48It was a completely different set of kids and you suddenly realise,

0:31:48 > 0:31:50just looking at them, how happy they can be.

0:31:50 > 0:31:55On their return, there was just one negative to consider.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57The thought of a 30-year mortgage

0:31:57 > 0:32:00just wasn't really appealing, to be honest.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03At that point, there was a bit of me...my stomach was churning,

0:32:03 > 0:32:06thinking, "I don't think we can do this."

0:32:06 > 0:32:08The finances definitely made us think long and hard

0:32:08 > 0:32:11about whether we could make the trip or not.

0:32:11 > 0:32:14But Sarah and Max weren't going to let budgets beat them

0:32:14 > 0:32:16and decided to plough ahead and make the move.

0:32:16 > 0:32:20We've decided, hands down, that it's definitely worth taking the risk.

0:32:20 > 0:32:22We might have a 30-year mortgage at first,

0:32:22 > 0:32:25but we'll just work hard and try to get that down as fast as we can.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28I work really hard, Max works really hard. We could make this work.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31I'd rather go there and absolutely wing it for a few years

0:32:31 > 0:32:33than stay here.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35The couple prepared to apply for a visa

0:32:35 > 0:32:37and had settled on Perth as their destination,

0:32:37 > 0:32:41having been smitten by the city during their trial week.

0:32:41 > 0:32:43We had fallen in love with the place.

0:32:43 > 0:32:46We were adamant that was the only place we wanted to go.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49But when they discovered Sarah's job as a community worker

0:32:49 > 0:32:51was no longer on the wanted list for Perth,

0:32:51 > 0:32:54their plans were thrown into jeopardy.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56It was quite a depressing moment.

0:32:56 > 0:32:59We were just like, "Right, OK, so what do we do now?"

0:32:59 > 0:33:01With Perth out of the picture,

0:33:01 > 0:33:04the couple found Sarah's job was on the skills shortage list

0:33:04 > 0:33:07for the Canberra area and started the application process,

0:33:07 > 0:33:10only to be stopped in their tracks again.

0:33:10 > 0:33:14Canberra had kindly taken it off their list as well.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17It was like, "Oh, OK, what do we do?"

0:33:17 > 0:33:19Was the dream over now before it's even started?

0:33:19 > 0:33:21At that stage, we were thinking,

0:33:21 > 0:33:24"Is this somebody telling us that it's not going to happen?"

0:33:24 > 0:33:28More research left them with just two choices.

0:33:28 > 0:33:29Darwin and Tasmania.

0:33:29 > 0:33:31Darwin seemed the best option.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35While they weren't initially bowled over by the city...

0:33:35 > 0:33:37My gut reaction was, "We're not going to Darwin.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40"It's full of crocodiles, it's too warm, it's too expensive,

0:33:40 > 0:33:42"it's too far away from everywhere."

0:33:42 > 0:33:45The couple were eventually won round.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47You start to do some research

0:33:47 > 0:33:51and you think, "Wow, this place is actually really, really nice,"

0:33:51 > 0:33:53and job opportunities were fantastic.

0:33:53 > 0:33:57At the moment, I'd say it's the best place in Australia to get a job,

0:33:57 > 0:33:59the fastest-growing economy.

0:33:59 > 0:34:01Sarah's already inspired by the possibility

0:34:01 > 0:34:03of new challenges on the work front there.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08To work with Aborigines and people that are isolated

0:34:08 > 0:34:13within their own community so, in that aspect, it really excites me.

0:34:13 > 0:34:15With a new hometown finally agreed,

0:34:15 > 0:34:19Max and Sarah started again with the paperwork.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22It's a long, drawn-out process, an expensive process -

0:34:22 > 0:34:25emotionally draining, as well.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27You need to be 100%, because the process

0:34:27 > 0:34:30is so difficult that it would probably put you off.

0:34:30 > 0:34:34I think people expected us to decide we were going to Australia in May

0:34:34 > 0:34:36or June and be away in July or August

0:34:36 > 0:34:38and it's certainly not like that.

0:34:39 > 0:34:41But they stayed the course and

0:34:41 > 0:34:46almost a year after their trial week, their tenacity paid off.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49The visa was awarded on Friday the 13th of March,

0:34:49 > 0:34:50which was a bit scary.

0:34:50 > 0:34:53I was thinking, "I hope this isn't an omen!"

0:34:53 > 0:34:57Getting the visas, Friday the 13th or not, was just amazing.

0:34:57 > 0:35:03It was just almost months and months and months down the line,

0:35:03 > 0:35:08then finally you just have the tick to say, "Yep, you're in."

0:35:09 > 0:35:11In just seven weeks,

0:35:11 > 0:35:15the family will be jetting off for their new life, and Cara can't wait.

0:35:15 > 0:35:18When my mum and dad told me about going to Australia,

0:35:18 > 0:35:19it was really exciting.

0:35:19 > 0:35:22I'd rather have that kind of lifestyle

0:35:22 > 0:35:24than this lifestyle, out in the rain.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28And while Hayden had voted undecided after the trial week,

0:35:28 > 0:35:31he's since come round to the idea.

0:35:31 > 0:35:32Over the past two months...

0:35:32 > 0:35:33He's changed.

0:35:33 > 0:35:35He's changed and even in the car,

0:35:35 > 0:35:37"How many weeks is it till we're going to Australia?

0:35:37 > 0:35:39"I'm going to miss my nana and papa when we go,

0:35:39 > 0:35:42"but can I have a pool party for my next party?"

0:35:42 > 0:35:48I like going swimming cos you don't need to go for a bath in Australia.

0:35:48 > 0:35:51You can just go and you can just jump in the pool.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53Sarah knows the move

0:35:53 > 0:35:56won't be quite as simple for Rhiannon, though.

0:35:56 > 0:36:00She's leaving her dad and his family as well.

0:36:00 > 0:36:03The thought of even leaving them, it breaks my heart.

0:36:03 > 0:36:05I just try not to think about it.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08I know it's going to be really, really hard for the next few months,

0:36:08 > 0:36:11but I think at the back of my mind, I know it's going to be worth it.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14We've all had moments where we've had our doubts, you know,

0:36:14 > 0:36:17we've just had to talk it through and support each other,

0:36:17 > 0:36:20but we're all on the same hymn sheet here.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23We're all definitely wanting to move to Australia.

0:36:23 > 0:36:27And having Darwin as their destination has brought a benefit.

0:36:27 > 0:36:29There is actually six families

0:36:29 > 0:36:32that are all arriving within six weeks of each other in Darwin,

0:36:32 > 0:36:34so that was a real reassurance to me.

0:36:34 > 0:36:37There's Scottish, English, Irish families,

0:36:37 > 0:36:40so we're all going to be in the same situation.

0:36:40 > 0:36:42Moving to Darwin now, for us, is exciting.

0:36:42 > 0:36:44We're all ready to embrace it.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46The family have spent the last few months

0:36:46 > 0:36:49packing up their lives in the UK.

0:36:49 > 0:36:53Their appearance on Wanted Down Under

0:36:53 > 0:36:56provided some unexpected help when it came to selling their house.

0:36:56 > 0:36:59Somebody knocked our door, we had no idea who he was

0:36:59 > 0:37:03and he just said, "Hi, I'm Ian from down the road.

0:37:03 > 0:37:05"I saw your programme on television

0:37:05 > 0:37:08"and just wanted to ask are you moving to Australia?"

0:37:08 > 0:37:10They had seen it on the TV and they loved it,

0:37:10 > 0:37:12I think his wife had fell in love

0:37:12 > 0:37:14and he had been sent round to ask the question.

0:37:14 > 0:37:17We had a quick chat, started the full process and then,

0:37:17 > 0:37:19a couple of months down the line,

0:37:19 > 0:37:21we'd signed off on the house. It was sold.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24We would never have imagined it and still we're sitting there,

0:37:24 > 0:37:25thinking, "Did that really happen?"

0:37:25 > 0:37:29That was one huge big worry off us and then, at that stage,

0:37:29 > 0:37:32we could start to plan the shipping, the flights

0:37:32 > 0:37:36and actually have a proper timescale to do things.

0:37:36 > 0:37:40Taking leave of the home they've loved has been a piece of cake.

0:37:40 > 0:37:41I've felt nothing.

0:37:41 > 0:37:43I've actually felt nothing,

0:37:43 > 0:37:45which shows that it doesn't really mean anything.

0:37:45 > 0:37:49It's just a house, that's all it is.

0:37:49 > 0:37:52I think all of our dreams are elsewhere.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54We're just biding our time in here

0:37:54 > 0:37:58until we can move to where we want to be.

0:38:00 > 0:38:03But breaking the news they were moving to loved ones

0:38:03 > 0:38:07was more emotionally challenging, especially for Max.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10Telling my mum and dad was by far the worst part

0:38:10 > 0:38:14of the full process of getting to Australia.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17I think he held it together when he was telling them

0:38:17 > 0:38:20and then the minute he got in the car, the reality hurt.

0:38:21 > 0:38:25I drove home and just broke down in the car.

0:38:25 > 0:38:28I just could not stop crying for about two hours.

0:38:28 > 0:38:32It was a really, really bad day. It wasn't a nice day for me.

0:38:32 > 0:38:35Max was so upset, Sarah feared the worst.

0:38:35 > 0:38:39For me, that was worrying - that he maybe thought this wasn't

0:38:39 > 0:38:43worth the risk and it was maybe going to affect his decision

0:38:43 > 0:38:44not to move to Australia.

0:38:44 > 0:38:48If I was unsure about the decision, I wouldn't have told my mum and dad.

0:38:48 > 0:38:51Having to leave them behind must be really difficult,

0:38:51 > 0:38:55and I'll never be able to understand how he must feel.

0:38:55 > 0:38:57That's where I have it quite easy,

0:38:57 > 0:39:00that I don't have a mum or a dad to say bye to.

0:39:00 > 0:39:02The decision was right and it still is right.

0:39:02 > 0:39:03There's nothing changed about that,

0:39:03 > 0:39:10but just the realisation that you're hurting people, oh, it's horrible.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12The Bones are shipping their possessions down under

0:39:12 > 0:39:14and plan to rent initially,

0:39:14 > 0:39:18but hope to secure a home of their own as soon as possible.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21The cost of renting in Darwin is off the charts. It's so expensive.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24We're just looking at it as a three-month plan just now -

0:39:24 > 0:39:27go short-term lease and we'll just see what happens.

0:39:27 > 0:39:28When it comes to work,

0:39:28 > 0:39:31Max and Sarah have been busy applying for jobs online,

0:39:31 > 0:39:35but feel their chances will improve once they set foot in Australia.

0:39:35 > 0:39:37I think a lot of people could secure from the UK

0:39:37 > 0:39:40if they have specialised trades, like electricians

0:39:40 > 0:39:42and things like that,

0:39:42 > 0:39:46but in community work, it's much, much harder.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49Sarah's taken on extra work over the past year

0:39:49 > 0:39:51to up her employability down under.

0:39:51 > 0:39:55The idea behind that was to gain more experience so it gives me

0:39:55 > 0:39:58more opportunities, hopefully, on arrival to Australia.

0:39:58 > 0:40:02The job market is buoyant in Darwin, there is a lot of jobs.

0:40:05 > 0:40:06Max, meanwhile,

0:40:06 > 0:40:10is hoping to secure a more 9-5 position in Darwin.

0:40:10 > 0:40:12Anything in the retail sector,

0:40:12 > 0:40:15the hours are going to be more suitable for family life.

0:40:15 > 0:40:17I'm very open to doing it.

0:40:17 > 0:40:19We get there, get face-to-face in interviews

0:40:19 > 0:40:21and then, fingers crossed, everything works for us!

0:40:21 > 0:40:25With the city they'll be heading to having changed twice,

0:40:25 > 0:40:27Sarah feels the search for schools

0:40:27 > 0:40:29is a job best tackled on the ground as well.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32I think, until we're there, you get a feel for a place,

0:40:32 > 0:40:35you go and visit a school, you take the kids to see that area,

0:40:35 > 0:40:39have a look at night - we can't do any of that until we're there

0:40:39 > 0:40:43so we have nothing in place for accommodation,

0:40:43 > 0:40:48nothing in place for schools and no jobs, so it's dead exciting!

0:40:48 > 0:40:50Absolutely!

0:40:50 > 0:40:53With less than two months before they leave Scotland,

0:40:53 > 0:40:56plans are in progress for a very special send-off.

0:40:56 > 0:40:59Saying goodbye is going to be awful.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04We have a party planned for the 20th of June.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07It's going to be Australia and Scotland-themed,

0:41:07 > 0:41:12so there'll be blow-up crocodiles, we've got kangaroo meatballs

0:41:12 > 0:41:15and just loads and loads of different things -

0:41:15 > 0:41:17Scottish songs, Australian songs.

0:41:17 > 0:41:19It's just a last chance to have a few drinks,

0:41:19 > 0:41:21have a bit of fun, take loads of pictures

0:41:21 > 0:41:25and create loads of memories and to kind of leave on a high.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28But the party's not everyone's idea of a fond farewell.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31Max's mum and dad have told us that they are not coming.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35They just don't feel that they can cope with that just now.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38I completely understand that.

0:41:38 > 0:41:42I think our goodbye to Mum and Dad's going to be a more private affair.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45That day is going to be a difficult, difficult one,

0:41:45 > 0:41:46when we say our final goodbyes.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52So as the move fast approaches, are there any last minute nerves?

0:41:52 > 0:41:57I had about a two-week spell where I was doubting everything.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59I was loving Scotland.

0:41:59 > 0:42:05The sun was out, everything was great and, "Why are we doing this?"

0:42:05 > 0:42:08And then you just have a wee reality check,

0:42:08 > 0:42:10going, "Yeah, but Australia's really good as well."

0:42:10 > 0:42:15The only wobble that I've had was the day that I told my boss.

0:42:15 > 0:42:17I wish I could just take my job

0:42:17 > 0:42:20and all the young people that I work with to Australia.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23Despite everything and everyone they'll be leaving behind,

0:42:23 > 0:42:26the family can't wait to start their new life down under.

0:42:27 > 0:42:31I am absolutely pumped. I am absolutely buzzing about it.

0:42:31 > 0:42:33I cannot wait.

0:42:33 > 0:42:36I've been excited from the minute that we arrived in Australia

0:42:36 > 0:42:38all the way through the process.

0:42:38 > 0:42:39Everything's going to change,

0:42:39 > 0:42:44but the fact that it's changing in a new country is just so exciting.

0:42:44 > 0:42:47I'm just really, really looking to embrace the challenges ahead.

0:42:48 > 0:42:53To be really content and happy and rocking our sun tans!
