0:00:02 > 0:00:03If you lived with the heartache of knowing

0:00:03 > 0:00:08your youngest child's health could deteriorate at any time,

0:00:08 > 0:00:12what would you do to guarantee your family the best life possible?

0:00:12 > 0:00:17In 2014, Elizabeth Joseph was considering uprooting her family

0:00:17 > 0:00:22from everything they knew in the UK to start afresh in Australia.

0:00:22 > 0:00:28Today, we'll find out how, and where, the family are now.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Elizabeth was desperate to make her son Aiden's life

0:00:30 > 0:00:35as good as it could possibly be and believed Australia was the answer.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38I feel that it's the next chapter of our life.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40It can be a fresh start.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42But husband, Kevin, wasn't convinced.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44This is a massive gamble,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46uprooting our family to the other side of the world.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50One year on, just where do the Josephs now call home?

0:00:50 > 0:00:52It's a very hard place to be.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53Very hard.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Lying in the southern hemisphere,

0:01:18 > 0:01:21Australia's one of the world's oldest continents

0:01:21 > 0:01:24and the flattest landmass on Earth.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27Approximately 32 times the size of the United Kingdom

0:01:27 > 0:01:29but with around one third of the population,

0:01:29 > 0:01:32over a million British residents have emigrated there

0:01:32 > 0:01:34in the last 40 years.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36But the grass isn't always greener.

0:01:36 > 0:01:41Of those who've made the move, over 40% have returned home.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44When Kevin and Elizabeth Joseph's son, Aiden,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46was born with a life-threatening heart condition,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49the family faced an uncertain future.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51The chances of him surviving indefinitely

0:01:51 > 0:01:54without a heart transplant were slim,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57so Elizabeth wanted to make every day count

0:01:57 > 0:02:01by giving him and his siblings the best life possible.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05One year ago, she was hoping to persuade dad Kevin

0:02:05 > 0:02:07the family's future lay in Australia.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Today, we'll find out what happened next.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15The Josephs trial week in Australia started with 26 hours in the air

0:02:15 > 0:02:17getting from London to Adelaide.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19It had been Aiden's first flight

0:02:19 > 0:02:22and the journey had reminded Elizabeth of his fighting spirit.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Aiden did cope really well with the demands of flying.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29It just makes us realise how strong he actually is.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Having made the trip before,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Elizabeth was happy to have her feet back on Australian soil.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36I am overwhelmed that I'm back here.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38I just want to stay, I don't want to have to leave.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41And so far, Kevin was sharing her enthusiasm.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43I'm really excited for the week.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45I really want to see what the week brings.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49Elizabeth was hoping Australia could give their children a better future.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52The coming week would give her the chance to find out if she was right

0:02:52 > 0:02:55and convince Kevin it's where they should be.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02In 2014, dad Kevin, mum Elizabeth and their three children -

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Harrison, then 11, Isabel, then ten, and Aiden, aged eight -

0:03:06 > 0:03:08were living in Dartford, in Kent.

0:03:11 > 0:03:12Teenage sweethearts Elizabeth and Kevin

0:03:12 > 0:03:15had met at a Saturday job in a chemists.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17I was on the pharmacy counter and Elizabeth walked past

0:03:17 > 0:03:19and she saw me and she said to me...

0:03:19 > 0:03:22- Miserable.- .."Miserable smile," or something along those lines.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26- "Why don't you smile?"- Yeah. I was like, "Just smile."

0:03:26 > 0:03:28And we've been together since.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30Left foot on green.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Harrison and Isabel were born a few years later

0:03:32 > 0:03:35and the couple married in 2005.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Elizabeth fell pregnant again soon after,

0:03:37 > 0:03:41but the couple were to face an incredibly tough dilemma

0:03:41 > 0:03:45when a routine scan revealed baby Aiden had a rare heart condition.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48We had three choices to make -

0:03:48 > 0:03:52terminate it straightaway, or have him and do nothing,

0:03:52 > 0:03:55then he would die within ten days,

0:03:55 > 0:04:01or these three surgeries, which it was a 25% chance

0:04:01 > 0:04:03of actually dying on the table.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05- Hello, Mummy.- Hello.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08It was a heartbreaking decision to have to make,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11but Elizabeth and Kevin were determined to keep their baby.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15What parent wants to have that choice given to them?

0:04:15 > 0:04:16No-one does.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21To think that I could not have him,

0:04:21 > 0:04:24the charming little boy that we've got...

0:04:24 > 0:04:25I could have missed out on that.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29Aiden had been born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome,

0:04:29 > 0:04:31meaning he only has half a heart.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Having survived the operations,

0:04:33 > 0:04:36his parents knew he was likely to need a heart transplant

0:04:36 > 0:04:40at some point in the future, but they'd no idea when.

0:04:40 > 0:04:41That's probably the worst thing,

0:04:41 > 0:04:45not knowing whether he's going to be fine for the next 20, 30 years,

0:04:45 > 0:04:48or whether something could creep up on us.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51- It's hell, isn't it? It's like... - EMOTIONAL:- Sorry.- It's all right.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55It just doesn't bear thinking about, losing him.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Eight years later, though, Aiden's condition was stable

0:04:59 > 0:05:02and Elizabeth was determined to give her whole family

0:05:02 > 0:05:04the best future possible.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06A previous holiday there had her convinced

0:05:06 > 0:05:09that's what Australia could offer.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11She believed the country could also benefit Aiden,

0:05:11 > 0:05:14allowing him to enjoy a more active lifestyle.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19He's not allowed to go outside to play with his school friends

0:05:19 > 0:05:20because it's too cold.

0:05:20 > 0:05:25So over there, hopefully those limitations will be really reduced.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27Elizabeth was so determined to make the move,

0:05:27 > 0:05:31she'd already started the process of applying for a visa.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35Even though she knew Aiden's condition meant it could be refused.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38But husband Kevin wasn't convinced of the merits

0:05:38 > 0:05:42a new life on the other side of the world could bring.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45It is all about, can we afford to live there?

0:05:45 > 0:05:48Will it live up to Elizabeth's expectations?

0:05:48 > 0:05:50But Aiden as well, I just want to make sure

0:05:50 > 0:05:52that everything's right for him and set up for him

0:05:52 > 0:05:54to go out there, for any eventuality.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Elizabeth was determined to make the move happen.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58Australia just feels right.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01It feels like that's where I should be, it's where we should be.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04But she had her work cut out over the week ahead

0:06:04 > 0:06:05to bring Kevin on board.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07This is a massive gamble.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Uprooting our family to the other side of the world is, you know,

0:06:10 > 0:06:11it's a massive thing to do.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24To find out if Australia could deliver on Elizabeth's dream,

0:06:24 > 0:06:28the Josephs visited Adelaide where, even in winter,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31daily temperatures rarely dip below 15 degrees.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Their base for the week was a three-bedroom semi-detached

0:06:34 > 0:06:36property in the popular suburb of Forestville,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39just ten minutes from the city centre.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41But did it meet Elizabeth's expectations?

0:06:41 > 0:06:44It's not really what I wanted, I wanted a detached.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48Maybe not, but appearances could be deceptive.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52- Oh, my God! Wow!- The kitchen... - Oh, my gosh...

0:06:52 > 0:06:53Oh, wow.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55It was a great reaction from the children,

0:06:55 > 0:06:57but Elizabeth still wasn't sure.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59There's always going to be a but with me,

0:06:59 > 0:07:01just because my expectations are high.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04It wasn't the best start to their week, but as they unpacked,

0:07:04 > 0:07:05Elizabeth was still convinced

0:07:05 > 0:07:08the country had plenty to offer the whole family.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11I'm looking forward to seeing the kids' reactions this week.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15For them to actually see the dream that I see,

0:07:15 > 0:07:19for them to look at this place and think, "This isn't just a holiday.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22"This is actually how we want our lives to be."

0:07:22 > 0:07:25Ultimately, though, Elizabeth knew the biggest challenge

0:07:25 > 0:07:29she faced in the week ahead would be bringing Kevin onside.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32I've been reflecting on what we have in the UK and what we've built up,

0:07:32 > 0:07:35and starting again's quite a tough decision.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Back in the UK, the Josephs were living in a rented

0:07:49 > 0:07:52three-bedroom townhouse in the centre of Dartford.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55We've got three floors and my kitchen is on the middle level

0:07:55 > 0:07:57and the kids' bedrooms are right upstairs,

0:07:57 > 0:08:00so they have to endure four flights.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02If they were to go ahead with the move, Elizabeth and Kevin

0:08:02 > 0:08:05both had high hopes for the kind of house they'd like.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09I would love to have a really modern home.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11I don't want to have to decorate,

0:08:11 > 0:08:13I don't want to have to do anything to it.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16The garden definitely, cos the garden we have is quite small.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Four bedrooms would be great.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21To not be so overlooked would be great as well.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27The family planned to continue renting in Australia

0:08:27 > 0:08:30and had a maximum budget of £1,200 to spend each month.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36To give them an idea of the kind of house they could have,

0:08:36 > 0:08:37we showed them three properties -

0:08:37 > 0:08:41two based on budget and a third based on their ideal home.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43The search got underway

0:08:43 > 0:08:44in Forestville.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47Would this three-bedroom townhouse in a secure, gated complex

0:08:47 > 0:08:50be somewhere the Josephs could call home?

0:08:50 > 0:08:54- Oh, this is nice.- I like the big windows. Lots of space.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57This house had the modern interiors Elizabeth was looking for,

0:08:57 > 0:09:01but the tiny outdoor space was disappointing.

0:09:01 > 0:09:02Yeah, the garage is great,

0:09:02 > 0:09:04it's just there's no actual space for the kids.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08- No, it's not what we wanted. - That's a bit of a downer, isn't it?

0:09:08 > 0:09:10The house only had three bedrooms,

0:09:10 > 0:09:12so some of the children would have had to share,

0:09:12 > 0:09:15and that wasn't the only concern.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Not too keen on the fact that we've got...

0:09:19 > 0:09:21- ..trams right outside the window. - Oh, the view, yeah.

0:09:21 > 0:09:26So, noise-wise, whoever's sleeping here isn't going to get much sleep.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28The master bedroom, though, did show more promise.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30- Ooh!- That's better.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33- Yeah.- This is the sort of perfect size, I think.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36- And there's a nice balcony out there as well.- Elizabeth?

0:09:36 > 0:09:37But then no view.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Even though she was the one pushing for the move,

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Elizabeth was proving hardest to please.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- Sadly, this doesn't blow me away. - Yeah.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47The house may not have lived up to the family's hopes,

0:09:47 > 0:09:50but with £1,200 to spend every month,

0:09:50 > 0:09:52was it in line with their budget?

0:09:52 > 0:09:55I reckon £1,400 a month.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59I will go for one-five.

0:10:04 > 0:10:05Whoa.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08£1,035 a month.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11It's still not where I'd want to live

0:10:11 > 0:10:13and I still wouldn't pay that price.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Yeah, I'm quite surprised by that.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18- I still wouldn't move here.- No.

0:10:18 > 0:10:19While it was affordable,

0:10:19 > 0:10:23it was going to take much more to impress Kevin and Elizabeth.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Would property two do the job?

0:10:26 > 0:10:29To find out, the family headed for the leafy suburb of Belair,

0:10:29 > 0:10:32just 13 miles from central Adelaide.

0:10:32 > 0:10:36With schools, parks and a variety of outdoor activities available,

0:10:36 > 0:10:38the area could have given Aiden the outdoors lifestyle

0:10:38 > 0:10:42Elizabeth wanted, but did the house come up to scratch?

0:10:42 > 0:10:45- So, what do you think? - It's really nice.

0:10:45 > 0:10:46- It's different, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48- And it's got a big garden. - Yeah, I like it.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52Was everyone still on the same page inside?

0:10:52 > 0:10:53I like this.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57It's better than the last place, much more space.

0:10:57 > 0:10:58Elizabeth?

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- It's not pulling my heartstrings. - No?- No.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03And a wander into the kitchen didn't help.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06- It needs updating. - I'd update it a little bit, yeah.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08I like the view and I like the location.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Compare it to where we saw before with the trains,

0:11:10 > 0:11:12this is idyllic, really, isn't it?

0:11:12 > 0:11:13With four bedrooms in total,

0:11:13 > 0:11:16the children wouldn't have had to share...

0:11:16 > 0:11:17Decent sized rooms, aren't they?

0:11:17 > 0:11:19..but it wasn't long before Elizabeth's good mood

0:11:19 > 0:11:21was flushed away.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25- Family bathroom is just needing to be modernised again, isn't it?- Hm.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Even with room for the children to roam,

0:11:27 > 0:11:29this house just hadn't captured Elizabeth's heart.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32What's the point in having an outside that you like

0:11:32 > 0:11:34- if you don't like the inside to live in it?- Hm.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36If it's not pulling on your heartstrings

0:11:36 > 0:11:40to want to move out to Australia, then what's the point?

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Elizabeth wasn't settling for second best,

0:11:42 > 0:11:46but with a £1,200 monthly budget, could they even afford this house?

0:11:50 > 0:11:52- Exactly the same as the other property.- It is.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56That's surprising, but it still doesn't sway me.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59That's good to know that we're in this type of area...

0:11:59 > 0:12:01- The further out you go, you get more.- ..with this much land.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05If you could get smaller land, maybe you could get a better house.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08Even knowing they'd have almost £200 leftover every month

0:12:08 > 0:12:12wasn't enough to turn this house into the couple's perfect home.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Hopefully, it was a case of saving the best for last.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17To round off their search,

0:12:17 > 0:12:20the family viewed what we thought could be their dream home.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22Within easy commuting distance of Adelaide,

0:12:22 > 0:12:26Chandlers Hill offered all the facilities the family could need

0:12:26 > 0:12:31and promised modern individual housing set on large blocks of land.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35Wow, look at that. That is amazing!

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Wow!

0:12:37 > 0:12:39It's lovely. You've not got to do anything.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42It was the happiest Elizabeth had been all day,

0:12:42 > 0:12:46and it wasn't long before Isabel was feeling at home, too.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48- This would definitely be my room. - Wow.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51And a look at the plush master bedroom

0:12:51 > 0:12:54gave Elizabeth even more to celebrate.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Very nice. Walk-in wardrobe as well.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58I don't know where you're going to be getting changed

0:12:58 > 0:13:00- cos this is mine.- Oh, is it? OK.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02And there was even more to come.

0:13:02 > 0:13:03Now, this is a family bathroom.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- This is, isn't it?- This is like... - This is lovely.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09- Big bath, big shower.- Perfect.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12It looked like Kevin could imagine being right at home here.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14And when the family stepped back outside,

0:13:14 > 0:13:17Aiden spotted something else to get excited about.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20Wow, look at that swimming pool!

0:13:20 > 0:13:22Yep. It wasn't on their wish list,

0:13:22 > 0:13:24but this house also had its own pool.

0:13:24 > 0:13:28This is the biggest and best garden ever!

0:13:28 > 0:13:30The home was a hit with everyone.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32I can't really fault this property at all.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34But Elizabeth and Kevin were both worried

0:13:34 > 0:13:36it would be way beyond their reach.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40I couldn't even hazard a guess but...

0:13:40 > 0:13:43more than 2,000. 2,500?

0:13:43 > 0:13:46- Three? I don't know. - I'm going to go for 2,000.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49The couple's budget was £1,200 per month.

0:13:51 > 0:13:52Go on, Aiden.

0:13:54 > 0:13:55- Oh, my God.- What?!

0:13:55 > 0:13:58That's a lot low... What, really?

0:13:58 > 0:14:00No. That's just crazy that...

0:14:00 > 0:14:03- Yeah. I just want to be here. - I'd move in.- Yeah!

0:14:03 > 0:14:04I just want to be here now.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08House-hunting had started slowly for the Josephs.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09Although under budget,

0:14:09 > 0:14:13property one lacked the space they wanted inside and out.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16Property two cost exactly the same,

0:14:16 > 0:14:18but the generous gardens weren't enough to compensate

0:14:18 > 0:14:21for dated decor.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23But property three had raised the bar

0:14:23 > 0:14:26and the family were stunned to discover they could live

0:14:26 > 0:14:29in a fabulous five-bedroom house with a swimming pool

0:14:29 > 0:14:31for just £50 more than their budget.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34So, how did their last-minute discovery

0:14:34 > 0:14:36influence Elizabeth's chances of getting the life she wanted

0:14:36 > 0:14:38for her family?

0:14:38 > 0:14:40Based on the properties that we've seen today,

0:14:40 > 0:14:42our vote goes to...

0:14:49 > 0:14:52- Australia!- Australia!- Australia!

0:14:52 > 0:14:54I thought today I was going to be more of an unsure.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56When I saw the last one, I thought,

0:14:56 > 0:14:58"Oh, definitely, we're not going to afford this."

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Then as soon as I saw the price... Yeah, it makes it more realistic.

0:15:01 > 0:15:02It's been a good start.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05I can't wait to see what we've got next to come up.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09Fingers crossed that it will be just as positive as it has been today.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17A unanimous vote for Australia

0:15:17 > 0:15:20meant Elizabeth was perhaps one small step closer

0:15:20 > 0:15:22to the family life she'd been dreaming of.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25Good work prospects down under were now crucial

0:15:25 > 0:15:28if she was to convince Kevin to make the move.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33Back in UK, Elizabeth was working as a midwife.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Kevin was also based in a hospital.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38As a pharmacy technician, he looked after patients' medication.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41While Elizabeth was working part-time,

0:15:41 > 0:15:42as the main visa applicant,

0:15:42 > 0:15:45she was prepared to work full-time in Australia.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49That is a bit daunting to think that I could end up losing that time

0:15:49 > 0:15:53with my children that I so really want,

0:15:53 > 0:15:56but if that's the way that I have to get to Australia,

0:15:56 > 0:15:58then that's what I will have to do.

0:15:58 > 0:16:00Kevin was a lot less certain

0:16:00 > 0:16:04about the prospect of turning his professional life upside down.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06If I can't secure work as a pharmacy technician

0:16:06 > 0:16:08and I have to look at something else,

0:16:08 > 0:16:10that for me would really put me off wanting to go.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18Elizabeth knew her chances of persuading Kevin

0:16:18 > 0:16:22to follow her dream could rest on what they were about to find out.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26To explore their options, the couple headed to Flinders Medical Centre,

0:16:26 > 0:16:29one of South Australia's biggest hospitals.

0:16:29 > 0:16:34Elizabeth was shown around by Beverley, a midwife and expat.

0:16:34 > 0:16:35How many actual delivery rooms do you have?

0:16:35 > 0:16:38We've got nine delivery rooms, three assessment beds

0:16:38 > 0:16:41and a recovery, which has currently got two beds in it.

0:16:41 > 0:16:45It's very similar to the hospital that I'm in at the moment.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47It was a reassuring start.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51Meanwhile, upstairs, Kevin had arrived at the pharmacy.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53Hi, Kevin. I'm Steve. I'm chief pharmacist for South Australia.

0:16:53 > 0:16:57- Let's start off by showing you round the department, shall we?- Brilliant.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59Elizabeth was curious to find out how midwifery in Australia

0:16:59 > 0:17:01compared to the UK.

0:17:01 > 0:17:05The staffing ratio is better here, so there's more one-to-one

0:17:05 > 0:17:08and you get less patients per midwife.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10But in terms of the lifestyle, there's a lot of difference.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13You've got more time at home cos you're not working as many...

0:17:13 > 0:17:15or as long hours, I should say.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17It was great news for Elizabeth.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21Back upstairs, Kevin was ready to talk business.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23Are my qualifications recognised here in Australia?

0:17:23 > 0:17:25There are no formal qualifications required

0:17:25 > 0:17:29to work as a pharmacy assistant within the South Australian system.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32In terms of you having the ability and competences to do the job

0:17:32 > 0:17:34within Australia, then you'd have those,

0:17:34 > 0:17:37- but your formal qualifications wouldn't be recognised.- OK.

0:17:37 > 0:17:41So, in theory, Kevin could have been overqualified.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45Outside, Elizabeth was keen to hear about potential earnings.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47Full-time, which is five days a week,

0:17:47 > 0:17:51you could look to earn anywhere between 56,000 and 77,000 a year.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54A starting salary of just over £31,000

0:17:54 > 0:17:57was almost 20,000 more than Elizabeth was earning

0:17:57 > 0:18:00working part-time in the UK.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04Is there currently any opportunities for a midwife with my banding

0:18:04 > 0:18:06going at Flinders?

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Erm...it's quite tricky at the moment.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11We have an over-surplus of graduate midwives

0:18:11 > 0:18:14that we didn't have positions for, so it would be difficult.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17That doesn't mean to say that in the next couple of years,

0:18:17 > 0:18:18there won't be an opportunity.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Finding employment might not have been easy,

0:18:21 > 0:18:24but that wasn't enough to make Elizabeth rethink the move.

0:18:24 > 0:18:25It is a little bit disheartening,

0:18:25 > 0:18:28but it just makes it a little bit more, for me,

0:18:28 > 0:18:30to bite my teeth into and say, "I'm not going to give up."

0:18:30 > 0:18:32Not just yet.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35It's just a tiny little hurdle to get over.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37Kevin had one last question.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39What kind of salary would I be earning?

0:18:39 > 0:18:42As things stand at the moment, you'd come in at the baseline salary,

0:18:42 > 0:18:43which is 38,000.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47Discovering he'd earn £4,000 less than in the UK

0:18:47 > 0:18:49wasn't the best end to his meeting.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52It does put a bit of doubt in my mind about whether to make the move.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54My salary back in the UK is quite good

0:18:54 > 0:18:57and here it doesn't seem as high as what I was expecting.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59The reality of Adelaide's job market

0:18:59 > 0:19:01had cast a cloud over the couple's day.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03We need to think about financial, really.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06Whether or not if we can actually afford to live here.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09So, did they choose work at home or away?

0:19:09 > 0:19:12So, based on the positive and negatives of today

0:19:12 > 0:19:15regarding job opportunities in Australia, our vote goes to...

0:19:24 > 0:19:27- Undecided.- Undecided.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31I earn a lot more in the UK for my job role than I do here.

0:19:31 > 0:19:36If my income can support us, then it'd be exactly the same way around

0:19:36 > 0:19:38except for we'd have a better lifestyle.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41For me, I've always enjoyed my career and my job,

0:19:41 > 0:19:43and I want to know that I can make my contribution.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47We'll just have to wait and see.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59Work opportunities had put a dent in Elizabeth's dream,

0:19:59 > 0:20:02but she wasn't ready to surrender without a fight.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06Believing a warmer climate could benefit Aiden,

0:20:06 > 0:20:09she hoped a family day in the Australian sunshine

0:20:09 > 0:20:12would put any doubts Kevin had back in the shade.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14- Harry wants a sandwich. - Can you do it?

0:20:14 > 0:20:17The family spent the day at Brown Hill Creek recreational park.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20It was the perfect place for the children to run wild

0:20:20 > 0:20:23and Aiden was more than happy to join in.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26There's no-one around to turn around and say, "Be quiet," is there?

0:20:26 > 0:20:28No, exactly.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31For Elizabeth, it was a rare opportunity for the whole family

0:20:31 > 0:20:33to spend quality time outside

0:20:33 > 0:20:36and a reminder of why she wanted the move so badly.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38I'm on a ticking clock,

0:20:38 > 0:20:42and I don't know when the alarm's going to go off with Aiden's health.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46So, being able to come to Australia gives us that extra time with him.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48He was running around all day

0:20:48 > 0:20:50and he's loving this environment as well, it's great.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53And even Harrison and Isabel had noticed a difference.

0:20:53 > 0:20:58I think Australia would make Aiden's life feel much better.

0:20:58 > 0:21:02In England, it gets really cold for him and he goes all blue.

0:21:02 > 0:21:09So, Mum and Dad want us to move here cos it's really warm for Aiden.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12So, yeah, he doesn't go blue, he goes red.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14But the day still needed to work some magic

0:21:14 > 0:21:17to make Isabel want to follow her parents' wishes.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20Home is home, and this is not home.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23Which was exactly why Elizabeth wanted it.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25Even working full-time,

0:21:25 > 0:21:28she remained confident the lifestyle they could have in Australia

0:21:28 > 0:21:31would be far superior to the one they had at home.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33This is definitely where I want to be. And it's hard

0:21:33 > 0:21:36cos I find it hard to even turn around and say

0:21:36 > 0:21:40that the UK is my home, because I don't feel that it is.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42So that's how much that I want Australia.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45So, had a day out in the Australian countryside been enough

0:21:45 > 0:21:47to win everyone round?

0:21:47 > 0:21:51Based upon the things that we did today, we're going to vote for...

0:22:00 > 0:22:03- ALL:- Australia!

0:22:06 > 0:22:08So, Isabel, why did you choose undecided?

0:22:08 > 0:22:12Because I haven't seen that much fun and I didn't have that much fun.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15I chose Australia because some of the activities were very similar

0:22:15 > 0:22:17to what we could do back in the UK, but I feel,

0:22:17 > 0:22:20knowing the different environment and how close it is to the city,

0:22:20 > 0:22:22that kind of won my vote over.

0:22:22 > 0:22:26- Aiden, why did you choose Australia? - Cos it's sunny and lovely and fun.

0:22:26 > 0:22:32I get to have more fun and get to see more of nature.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35I feel that the potential of coming to Australia is a little bit closer.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40Elizabeth was hopeful, but there was some way to go yet.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49The Josephs' week in Adelaide had delivered some positives,

0:22:49 > 0:22:52but Elizabeth knew her chances of getting the life she wanted

0:22:52 > 0:22:55for Aiden and her family would depend on Kevin being convinced

0:22:55 > 0:22:58a move wouldn't lead to financial ruin.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02The couple rented back in the UK and didn't have a house to sell.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04So, while the children played outside,

0:23:04 > 0:23:08they sat down to compare costs in Australia with those in the UK.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10First up was the weekly shop.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13- Coleslaw.- 3.22? Oh, my God.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15It's coleslaw! Well, we'll make our own.

0:23:15 > 0:23:20So, we pay £4 for 800g of strawberries and £7 here.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22God!

0:23:22 > 0:23:24- It's expensive, isn't it? - No more strawberries.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26So, how did the food bill add up?

0:23:26 > 0:23:30It's £32.70 more expensive in Australia.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33That was around £130 a month more on groceries,

0:23:33 > 0:23:37and the couple still needed to factor in the bigger costs.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39- Wow!- Electricity is a lot.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43- Electricity is like 28...88 more expensive.- More, yeah.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46Car insurance and MOT, that's more expensive.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48So, that's 66.94 more.

0:23:48 > 0:23:52This page is just not as good as the food shop, is it?

0:23:52 > 0:23:55The couple had based their sums on the dream property they'd viewed,

0:23:55 > 0:23:58and the numbers looked far from promising.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01£4,062.33.

0:24:01 > 0:24:09- Wow.- So, we'd be spending £1,164.41 a month more

0:24:09 > 0:24:11in Australia. That's huge.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13It was a substantial amount of money

0:24:13 > 0:24:17unless their potential new salaries could cover the shortfall.

0:24:17 > 0:24:23Australia income 3,750.66

0:24:23 > 0:24:29minus Australia outgoing, which is -311.67.

0:24:29 > 0:24:34In the UK, the family had £400 leftover every month.

0:24:34 > 0:24:38But in Australia, they'd be over £300 in the red,

0:24:38 > 0:24:42making them around £700 worse off every month down under.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44- That's terrible.- That is.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48But this is based on the dream home, which was absolutely stunning.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Exactly. We didn't really think that we'd get a pool

0:24:51 > 0:24:54and things like that anyway, so... Is it still doable?

0:24:54 > 0:24:56Elizabeth was trying to stay positive,

0:24:56 > 0:24:59but it looked like the financial facts had put the life

0:24:59 > 0:25:03she so desperately wanted for her family just out of reach.

0:25:03 > 0:25:04Our vote goes to...

0:25:12 > 0:25:14- UK.- Undecided.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16I still think that we need to just look forever into it,

0:25:16 > 0:25:17so that's why I went for undecided.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25While the realisation it could leave the family out of pocket

0:25:25 > 0:25:27wasn't enough to put Elizabeth off,

0:25:27 > 0:25:29Kevin's fears about finances down under

0:25:29 > 0:25:31seemed to have been proven.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33The Josephs decided to watch

0:25:33 > 0:25:36messages from friends and family at home together.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38Would hearing from loved ones mean another setback

0:25:38 > 0:25:41for Elizabeth's vision of their future?

0:25:41 > 0:25:42Hey, guys. Hope you're having a great time.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Hiya. Hope you're having a great time.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48Kevin's a very good family man.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51He loves his children and he loves Elizabeth as well.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53With Aiden's condition, they've

0:25:53 > 0:25:56had to really think about,

0:25:56 > 0:25:57you know, his future,

0:25:57 > 0:26:00and the cold weather over here isn't helping.

0:26:00 > 0:26:01No.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03I'm pleased, really.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05It's a new start. It's a new life.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08If you don't go for it when you're young,

0:26:08 > 0:26:10you look back and you wish that you had, and it's too late.

0:26:12 > 0:26:14I don't know if I'll miss my brother so much

0:26:14 > 0:26:15cos I know my brother

0:26:15 > 0:26:18is going to be all right and he can look after himself.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21I think it'll be more I'll miss the kids, seeing them grow up.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23That'd be more what I'd miss.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26If you have even the smallest doubt,

0:26:26 > 0:26:29then just make sure that you stay here with us in the UK.

0:26:29 > 0:26:30Good luck to you all.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33We hope you make the right decision and we're all behind you.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37- Everybody all right?- Yeah.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39But does it make you sad? You're seeing the family,

0:26:39 > 0:26:43but then you won't see them again for a very long time.

0:26:43 > 0:26:46Just sad to hear that Mum might not see them again

0:26:46 > 0:26:48when we're in Australia.

0:26:48 > 0:26:49I was perhaps taking for granted

0:26:49 > 0:26:51that your family is on your doorstep.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59Messages from home had shown the Josephs the emotional sacrifices

0:26:59 > 0:27:02they'd be making if they went ahead with a move,

0:27:02 > 0:27:03and with Kevin's concerns,

0:27:03 > 0:27:07it was far from clear where the Josephs' future lay.

0:27:07 > 0:27:08The weather had worsened,

0:27:08 > 0:27:12but had their week in Australia cast a cloud over Elizabeth's dream?

0:27:12 > 0:27:14As the final vote approached,

0:27:14 > 0:27:17would Kevin be ruled by his head or his heart?

0:27:17 > 0:27:19It's been great to see the kids outdoors and doing

0:27:19 > 0:27:21some of the things together as a family.

0:27:21 > 0:27:22It's been good.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25Being able to come to Australia means that we could do so much.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27We can change so much.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30We can go out and just have fun.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33My emotions have been up and down throughout the whole week.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35I just want to make sure that the move's right financially

0:27:35 > 0:27:37and that we can support the children.

0:27:37 > 0:27:41But for Elizabeth, the decision was about much more than money.

0:27:41 > 0:27:43It basically comes down to Aiden's health.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47For him to be able to grow and thrive and for us to actually

0:27:47 > 0:27:50witness that and see that and have those memories.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52After eight incredibly challenging years,

0:27:52 > 0:27:55she was determined to make her children's lives

0:27:55 > 0:27:56as happy as possible.

0:27:56 > 0:28:00Knowing that you just don't know what you're going to get

0:28:00 > 0:28:04or which day he's going to go, you just think,

0:28:04 > 0:28:06"If I can give him this,

0:28:06 > 0:28:08"then I will give him anything possible."

0:28:10 > 0:28:14So, where did the family decide their future lay?

0:28:14 > 0:28:19Based on this week, we've had lots of exciting and strenuous

0:28:19 > 0:28:22and stressing times, but mainly all enjoyable,

0:28:22 > 0:28:24we're ready to vote for...

0:28:35 > 0:28:36- Australia.- Australia.

0:28:38 > 0:28:41So, Harrison, why did you go undecided?

0:28:41 > 0:28:43Cos I'm afraid that Aiden might get too cold.

0:28:43 > 0:28:46If it was sunny and we didn't have a wet day today,

0:28:46 > 0:28:48- you would've gone Australia, would you?- Yeah.- Oh, OK.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51There are some negatives, but I think if we work around those,

0:28:51 > 0:28:53we could make a life here.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57Coming here has been really useful to make us realise

0:28:57 > 0:28:59that we can actually live our dream.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02It'll be a case of us going home,

0:29:02 > 0:29:04waiting for our visa to hopefully be processed,

0:29:04 > 0:29:08- and set a date for us to move to Australia.- Right.

0:29:17 > 0:29:18It looked as if the Josephs

0:29:18 > 0:29:22were all set for a new life in Australia,

0:29:22 > 0:29:26finally achieving Elizabeth's dream to give Aiden a life in the sunshine

0:29:26 > 0:29:30and the rest of her family a fresh start after the heartache

0:29:30 > 0:29:32they'd endured over the past few years.

0:29:32 > 0:29:35So, six months after their trial week,

0:29:35 > 0:29:40have the Josephs made it to the other side of the world?

0:29:40 > 0:29:42It's September, 2014,

0:29:42 > 0:29:44and the Joseph family are living in...

0:29:47 > 0:29:48Kent.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50But not for long.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52After their trial week convinced most of the family

0:29:52 > 0:29:54Australia was where they should be,

0:29:54 > 0:29:58they faced a tense wait to see if their visa application

0:29:58 > 0:29:59would be approved.

0:29:59 > 0:30:01We're still very uncertain as to whether we'd get it

0:30:01 > 0:30:03because of Aiden's heart condition.

0:30:03 > 0:30:07There are requirements that are a definite no-go.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09That if you require an organ transplant,

0:30:09 > 0:30:13you automatically are void of having a visa granted.

0:30:13 > 0:30:14But we started planning on...

0:30:14 > 0:30:17Started trying to tidy the house, just telling ourselves,

0:30:17 > 0:30:19"We're going to make it. We'll get there."

0:30:20 > 0:30:23Their optimism has finally paid off, though.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25It may have taken some time to process,

0:30:25 > 0:30:28but Aiden's continuing good health means the Josephs

0:30:28 > 0:30:30have at last been given the green light.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34It's been proven that he is very healthy

0:30:34 > 0:30:37and he is doing really, really well at the moment,

0:30:37 > 0:30:39I think, and so it's been granted.

0:30:39 > 0:30:41It's worked out really well, hasn't it?

0:30:41 > 0:30:42It's amazing.

0:30:42 > 0:30:46It's indescribable to think that

0:30:46 > 0:30:50we started this back in 2012.

0:30:51 > 0:30:56For Elizabeth, the dream she's held for so long is finally within reach.

0:30:56 > 0:30:59It's really surreal to think that we finally could go.

0:30:59 > 0:31:03I feel for the past three years we have been on hold.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07It's just been a case of constant exams,

0:31:07 > 0:31:12having to go through the process of one drawback after another,

0:31:12 > 0:31:14but there's always been something that's said,

0:31:14 > 0:31:17"No, we've got to keep going," and, "We are finally there."

0:31:20 > 0:31:22- Morning.- Morning.- Just back it in.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25Kevin's already made progress finding work done under.

0:31:26 > 0:31:29Initially, we were waiting for Elizabeth's registration

0:31:29 > 0:31:30to come through, and in the meantime,

0:31:30 > 0:31:33I'd started just applying for jobs and see what I could get.

0:31:33 > 0:31:34That's huge.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37And a job came up in a hospital, you know, in the centre of Adelaide

0:31:37 > 0:31:42that was right for me, and I had an interview online and got the job.

0:31:42 > 0:31:47It's a completely different spin on the way that this is working,

0:31:47 > 0:31:49but it's nice because it means I can settle the children

0:31:49 > 0:31:53into school and settle our family.

0:31:53 > 0:31:55With Kevin's start date just six weeks away,

0:31:55 > 0:31:57there's no time to lose.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00We have near enough emptied the house.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02Each time something is ticked off,

0:32:02 > 0:32:04it's like, "Oh, yeah. We're getting closer."

0:32:04 > 0:32:07- We have got a one-way ticket. - Exactly.- A one-way ticket.

0:32:07 > 0:32:10Finally, a one-way ticket

0:32:10 > 0:32:14that I will not have to fly back from Australia,

0:32:14 > 0:32:15which is fantastic.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20But not everyone's sharing Mum's enthusiasm.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23Half of me doesn't want to go and half of me wants to go.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31Harrison has dealt with this really well,

0:32:31 > 0:32:36whereas Isabel and Aiden, it's been a little bit more harder.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Certainly for Isabel. She's... She is struggling.

0:32:38 > 0:32:40It's going to be very hard for me

0:32:40 > 0:32:42because I'm going to miss all my friends.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46She may be having a few wobbles,

0:32:46 > 0:32:50but Isabel can also see the upside of a life down under.

0:32:50 > 0:32:55I get my own bedroom and my own door, so voila.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57Harrison's already making his plans.

0:32:57 > 0:33:02I'd probably spend time doing a bit of deep-sea diving

0:33:02 > 0:33:04or snorkelling or surfing.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07But Aiden isn't thinking that far ahead yet.

0:33:07 > 0:33:12He said to me when he ever has a hump, he says,

0:33:12 > 0:33:16"I'm not going to Australia. I'm jumping out of the plane."

0:33:16 > 0:33:18I hope he doesn't get a hump.

0:33:21 > 0:33:23Although saying goodbye to family and friends

0:33:23 > 0:33:25will be heart-wrenching...

0:33:25 > 0:33:26- Last item, Chris.- Last one.

0:33:26 > 0:33:28..as D-Day approaches,

0:33:28 > 0:33:31Elizabeth has no doubts the move's the right thing to do.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35I started this adventure as a dream thinking,

0:33:35 > 0:33:40"How could anyone ever move halfway around the world?

0:33:40 > 0:33:41"Who could do it?"

0:33:41 > 0:33:44And then thinking, "This isn't a reality."

0:33:44 > 0:33:46And actually, this is my reality.

0:33:46 > 0:33:50This is my family's reality, and we're going to be living it.

0:33:50 > 0:33:52At last, the Josephs are on their way.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01Six months later, it's April, 2015,

0:34:01 > 0:34:04and the Josephs are finally on the other side of the world

0:34:04 > 0:34:06in Adelaide, Australia.

0:34:08 > 0:34:09When we arrived at the airport,

0:34:09 > 0:34:12I felt that I was actually flying back home,

0:34:12 > 0:34:16cos I've always felt that Adelaide is going to be my home.

0:34:16 > 0:34:18When we arrived and we touched down, it was a really good feeling.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21Yeah, it was a really good feeling just to come back.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23I was just like, "Yes, I'm finally here."

0:34:23 > 0:34:26But leaving the UK wasn't so easy for everyone.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32When I left the UK, I felt very, very sad.

0:34:32 > 0:34:33I was crying.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36She did cry quite a lot, and that set everybody off,

0:34:36 > 0:34:39but... Yeah, I think she was feeling the brunt of it.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43Now 10,000 miles from home,

0:34:43 > 0:34:47Elizabeth and Kevin found their lives turned upside down.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50We had one day, maybe two, just to get over jet lag and relax,

0:34:50 > 0:34:54but after that, you've just got to storm on, haven't you?

0:34:54 > 0:34:55Cos you've got so much to do.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58We had so many questions that were still unanswered.

0:34:58 > 0:35:04There was just so much red tape here and...that we didn't comprehend

0:35:04 > 0:35:08and we didn't find out until we were actually here.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11It wasn't quite going to plan. Extremely stressful.

0:35:11 > 0:35:13Probably the most stressed I've been in my life

0:35:13 > 0:35:15out of anything we've ever done, I'd say.

0:35:15 > 0:35:17But the couple battled through together.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19Elizabeth was absolutely dedicated

0:35:19 > 0:35:21and focused on what she wanted to do.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24We worked really well as a team getting all of our things done.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26We hit a lot of hurdles,

0:35:26 > 0:35:29but we did manage to get that sorted in the end.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31With the initial teething problems out of the way,

0:35:31 > 0:35:35it was time for the Josephs to start their new life down under.

0:35:35 > 0:35:38Home is now a three-bedroom bungalow in the Adelaide Hills.

0:35:39 > 0:35:44It's not quite the dream home, but it does have its advantages.

0:35:44 > 0:35:45It's all on one level,

0:35:45 > 0:35:49so I'm more than grateful for the fact I haven't got to trawl up

0:35:49 > 0:35:52three flights of stairs any more, which is brilliant.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55I absolutely love it compared to where we lived in the UK.

0:35:55 > 0:35:57We're up in the hills, we've got the trees,

0:35:57 > 0:35:59the birds and loads of wildlife.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01I think the kids think that's absolutely fantastic.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04Isabel's over the moon with her new pad...

0:36:04 > 0:36:07This is my room for music and art.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09No boys are allowed except for girls.

0:36:09 > 0:36:11..and has found creative inspiration.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13So, this is my keyboard.

0:36:13 > 0:36:15I know how to play loads of songs on it.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17It's really fun.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20SHE PLAYS TUNE

0:36:20 > 0:36:21Not bad, Isabel.

0:36:22 > 0:36:25Just three bedrooms means the boys still have to share,

0:36:25 > 0:36:28but that hasn't presented any problems...yet.

0:36:28 > 0:36:34I sleep up on the top and I feel quite comfortable with it.

0:36:34 > 0:36:39He might have to take the bottom and I have to take the top

0:36:39 > 0:36:43if he gets really heavy and it might break the bed.

0:36:43 > 0:36:45- That won't happen.- Yes, it will.

0:36:45 > 0:36:49Might have to lay off the kangaroo burgers, Harrison.

0:36:49 > 0:36:52The open plan layout's perfect for the family,

0:36:52 > 0:36:54and the proximity to the children's school

0:36:54 > 0:36:56is the icing on the cake for Elizabeth.

0:36:56 > 0:36:59I can hear the bells go throughout the school periods

0:36:59 > 0:37:02and I can hear them playing during their lunch break,

0:37:02 > 0:37:06so I know I'm not that far away from them if they need me.

0:37:06 > 0:37:09That may not be an issue, Elizabeth.

0:37:09 > 0:37:13When I met everyone in class, they all smiled and said hello.

0:37:13 > 0:37:17And I waved hello back and then we all became good friends.

0:37:17 > 0:37:18I was very confident.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21I started speaking to all my friends

0:37:21 > 0:37:26that I have now and they make very good friends.

0:37:26 > 0:37:31School in Australia is really fun because it's more...

0:37:31 > 0:37:35And the playground is more gigantic.

0:37:35 > 0:37:38Things haven't fallen into place quite so neatly

0:37:38 > 0:37:40for Mum and Dad, though.

0:37:40 > 0:37:42Kevin's had some adapting to do in his new role

0:37:42 > 0:37:45in the pharmacy department of a local hospital.

0:37:45 > 0:37:48I'm the only technician, whereas I've come from the UK

0:37:48 > 0:37:51working with 60-odd members of staff.

0:37:51 > 0:37:53That's taking on a lot of responsibility that would

0:37:53 > 0:37:56normally have been shared between other members of staff.

0:37:56 > 0:37:58Although the job does have its pluses...

0:37:58 > 0:38:01I get to finish work every Friday at 12 noon,

0:38:01 > 0:38:02so I get to pick the kids up every Friday,

0:38:02 > 0:38:04get a nice, lovely weekend.

0:38:04 > 0:38:06Never work weekends or bank holidays.

0:38:06 > 0:38:08..it may not last for long.

0:38:08 > 0:38:10It's a temporary contract,

0:38:10 > 0:38:11and then I'll need to find employment

0:38:11 > 0:38:13before that runs out, really.

0:38:13 > 0:38:17And though Elizabeth did secure registration as a midwife,

0:38:17 > 0:38:21she's found it almost impossible to get work.

0:38:21 > 0:38:25Knowing that we've come all this way on my skill...

0:38:25 > 0:38:27To get all this way here,

0:38:27 > 0:38:29to find out that I can't actually get a job,

0:38:29 > 0:38:32it's really frustrating.

0:38:32 > 0:38:33As it stands right now,

0:38:33 > 0:38:37the situation is that there just simply aren't any midwife jobs

0:38:37 > 0:38:39going here in South Australia.

0:38:39 > 0:38:43Elizabeth's only option may be to look for work in another state -

0:38:43 > 0:38:47a far cry from the dream life she'd imagined for her family.

0:38:47 > 0:38:49I feel that Kevin would be under a lot of pressure

0:38:49 > 0:38:52and it would put a lot of pressure on our marriage.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55The dream was to actually come here and work.

0:38:55 > 0:38:58I didn't want it to be that I separate from Kevin

0:38:58 > 0:39:03cos then I'm literally leaving him as a single dad with three kids.

0:39:03 > 0:39:05This is a huge country. She would have to...

0:39:05 > 0:39:08It would be, you know, two, three hours' flight away.

0:39:08 > 0:39:11That would put a strain, I think. That's not kind of why we came here.

0:39:12 > 0:39:15The pressure has taken its toll on Elizabeth.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18It's a very hard place to be.

0:39:18 > 0:39:20Very hard.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24And the distance from home hasn't helped.

0:39:24 > 0:39:27Not having people there

0:39:27 > 0:39:32that you think that you could have supporting you,

0:39:32 > 0:39:34that is the hard bit.

0:39:34 > 0:39:36You can't just reach out.

0:39:36 > 0:39:38You can't just turn around and go,

0:39:38 > 0:39:42"Right, I'll come around for a cup of tea,"

0:39:42 > 0:39:45and just get all of that stress and pressure off.

0:39:45 > 0:39:50And yeah, sure, making new friends, but it's just not the same.

0:39:50 > 0:39:55With just one salary coming in, money's been tight.

0:39:55 > 0:39:59Financially, we've just been ticking over since we got here.

0:39:59 > 0:40:01My wages are not as much as they were in the UK,

0:40:01 > 0:40:03but they're enough for us to be able to get by.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06And the couple's stress is only increased by the knowledge

0:40:06 > 0:40:09Kevin could soon find himself out of a job too.

0:40:09 > 0:40:11The next seven months are pretty crucial.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14My contract comes to an end and then Elizabeth, obviously,

0:40:14 > 0:40:17needs to find work at that point or I need to find alternates,

0:40:17 > 0:40:19so that's really a big issue.

0:40:19 > 0:40:21This really is a very crucial time for us.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24Work hasn't been the only difficult issue

0:40:24 > 0:40:25the couple have had to battle.

0:40:26 > 0:40:30Although Aiden adapted well to Aussie life initially,

0:40:30 > 0:40:33things soon took a turn for the worse.

0:40:33 > 0:40:36Aiden has really struggled here,

0:40:36 > 0:40:43which has been a big pull on me because we came here for Aiden.

0:40:43 > 0:40:45Sensing something was up,

0:40:45 > 0:40:47the couple had Aiden tested for autism,

0:40:47 > 0:40:50with the results coming back positive.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53The move just pushed him over the boundaries.

0:40:53 > 0:40:56We thought Aiden was just Aiden - he was his own personality -

0:40:56 > 0:40:58but autistic children don't deal with change well,

0:40:58 > 0:41:01and we've moved to the other side of the world.

0:41:01 > 0:41:04In some ways, though, finding out has been a relief.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07It has answered a lot of questions about the way he acts

0:41:07 > 0:41:09and the way that he does certain things.

0:41:09 > 0:41:11Now that we've got this clear diagnosis,

0:41:11 > 0:41:12we can now actually move on

0:41:12 > 0:41:14and actually get him the support that he needs.

0:41:14 > 0:41:17We will deal with it because that's what we're all about,

0:41:17 > 0:41:19and we just get on with it.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22It's Aiden, and I wouldn't change Aiden for the world.

0:41:25 > 0:41:26On a sunnier note,

0:41:26 > 0:41:30the climate seems to be working wonders for Aiden's health.

0:41:31 > 0:41:32It's been amazing.

0:41:32 > 0:41:35I've never known him to have so much energy.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38He doesn't complain about being cold,

0:41:38 > 0:41:42which is brilliant, and it's a complete turnaround.

0:41:43 > 0:41:46A recent review with a heart consultant down under

0:41:46 > 0:41:48confirmed the good news.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51His verdict was that Aiden was really healthy,

0:41:51 > 0:41:54that his heart was doing really well.

0:41:54 > 0:41:56It's the best that he's actually ever seen.

0:41:56 > 0:41:59It makes me think that all of our efforts to come here,

0:41:59 > 0:42:01it kind of makes it worthwhile cos you think,

0:42:01 > 0:42:03"This is what we've come for."

0:42:03 > 0:42:06We've come for a better life for him, to give him that push.

0:42:06 > 0:42:08I think this is kind of like icing on the cake,

0:42:08 > 0:42:10that you've moved and he's doing really well,

0:42:10 > 0:42:13so it's just, like, nothing's going to stop him, really.

0:42:13 > 0:42:14Yeah.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16And it looks like Aiden agrees.

0:42:16 > 0:42:19I'd like to live in Australia for all the days

0:42:19 > 0:42:23cos it has lots of parks and lots of stuff to have fun.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25It's been a shaky start,

0:42:25 > 0:42:28but Kevin and Elizabeth are convinced the move

0:42:28 > 0:42:30to the other side of the world is a permanent one.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33I would say I'm definitely where I want to be.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35I'm definitely remaining positive.

0:42:35 > 0:42:38I absolutely feel we've made the absolute right choice

0:42:38 > 0:42:39moving to Australia.

0:42:39 > 0:42:40I think for the kids' futures,

0:42:40 > 0:42:43it's going to change their life completely.

0:42:43 > 0:42:46At the moment, it's difficult to look into the future

0:42:46 > 0:42:48until we get these issues sorted now,

0:42:48 > 0:42:50but I certainly don't think those issues won't be sorted,

0:42:50 > 0:42:52cos that's not the couple we are.

0:42:52 > 0:42:54We are ones that get up and do it.

0:42:54 > 0:42:56- Yeah.- Mm.

0:42:56 > 0:42:58- We got here, didn't we? - We did, yeah.

0:43:01 > 0:43:04Although there have been some bumps along the way,

0:43:04 > 0:43:08the Josephs' move down under has brought dividends too.

0:43:08 > 0:43:10They may still have some way to go,

0:43:10 > 0:43:13but we wish the family every success as they continue

0:43:13 > 0:43:16to pursue their dream life in Australia.
