0:00:24 > 0:00:28There's just one problem - his family don't want to go.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Everything would have to be 110%

0:00:31 > 0:00:34to make me want to leave everything behind in the UK.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37And when a trial week throws some spanners into the works...

0:00:37 > 0:00:39It's going to have to be a lot better than this

0:00:39 > 0:00:40to persuade me and Mum.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43..Peter's lifelong obsession could be left in tatters.

0:00:43 > 0:00:44I'm actually devastated.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47I don't think it's going to come true.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49I don't think my dream is going to come true.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Lying in the south-west Pacific,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20New Zealand's roughly the same size as the UK,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23but is home to less people than London.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26The country offers stunning scenery and sophisticated cities -

0:01:26 > 0:01:30a draw for the 7,000 Brits who move there every year.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34For two and a half decades,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36Peter Rowsell has felt he should be living

0:01:36 > 0:01:4011,000 miles away in New Zealand.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44Finally, his dream could be tantalisingly close.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Peter now has one week to discover

0:01:46 > 0:01:50if living on the other side of the world's as good as he believes

0:01:50 > 0:01:55and to try and persuade his reluctant family to make the move.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59The Rowsell's trial week begins with a journey lasting well over 24 hours,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01flying from London to Dubai to Melbourne,

0:02:01 > 0:02:04and then a final leg across the Tasman Sea to Auckland.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10When they finally arrive after a turbulent flight,

0:02:10 > 0:02:13they're shaken and shattered.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15The flight was... It was long.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18- It was...- Bumpy.- Bumpy.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21- 26 hours is a long, long flight. - DENISE CHUCKLES

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Peter's anxious about the week ahead.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27I'm feeling a bit wary of what's going to happen.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29Hopefully, everyone's still open-minded,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31and this is something we could do.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34But he'll have his work cut out with wife, Denise.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36I'm worried he's going to really like it

0:02:36 > 0:02:37and it's all what he thinks...

0:02:37 > 0:02:39He's hoped it'd be for the last 20-odd years,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41cos I don't know that I could come over here...

0:02:43 > 0:02:45..truthfully.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Peter has just seven days to convince his family

0:02:47 > 0:02:51New Zealand is where they should spend the rest of their lives.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Peter Rowsell lives with wife, Denise,

0:02:56 > 0:02:5914-year-old daughter, Ella, and 11-year-old son, Taron,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01in Kedington in Suffolk.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Peter and Denise grew up in the village,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06and it's a life Denise adores.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08I'm very comfortable living in the village.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12I love it.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19Their family's happy in the home they've spent years improving.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21I've spent a lot of work here,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23spent a lot of time and effort into the house.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24It means a lot, this house.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26We've sort of taken a long time,

0:03:26 > 0:03:29but we've kind of finally getting there.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31It's a beautiful house and I do love living here.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37And village life's made complete with close family on the doorstep.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40I've got my parents in the village,

0:03:40 > 0:03:42I've got my sister,

0:03:42 > 0:03:44my brother-in-law and their daughter in the village.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Mum and Dad only up the road, my sister's up the road.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49It's the way it's always been,

0:03:49 > 0:03:51I haven't known any different, really.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55It's a peaceful existence, but one that's under threat.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58While Denise is content with calling Kedington home,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Peter's become disillusioned.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03The character's gone. It's gone.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Now, we're just one big housing estate.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07It's horrible. It really is horrible.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10I love Kedington. It's just nice.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13It's just not where I want to be now.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16And that means Peter's resurrected a lifelong dream

0:04:16 > 0:04:19to be on the other side of the world.

0:04:19 > 0:04:20Something's in the background of my head -

0:04:20 > 0:04:22"New Zealand is the place to be."

0:04:22 > 0:04:24I've been thinking about it for 24 years,

0:04:24 > 0:04:26ever since I'd finished my apprenticeship.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29A friend of mine went to a seminar in London to look at New Zealand

0:04:29 > 0:04:31and it was always something I wanted to do.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Then I met Denise, and it just went on the back burner then.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39But in the years since Peter met Denise, his dream hasn't died,

0:04:39 > 0:04:41and with his disenchantment with the village,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44he's more determined than ever.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47But last three or four years, it's quite,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49"I think we should move, we should be moving, we should be moving,"

0:04:49 > 0:04:51once a month, at least.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53Sometimes it does get on your nerves.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56He probably talks about it all the time.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Although he's never been,

0:04:58 > 0:05:02Peter firmly believes New Zealand can offer much more than home.

0:05:02 > 0:05:07I think it'll offer my family definitely more outside experiences,

0:05:07 > 0:05:14whether that'll be kayaking, sailing, swimming in fresh air.

0:05:14 > 0:05:15But Denise just can't see

0:05:15 > 0:05:18the appeal of a life on the other side of the world.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21It is Peter's dream to move to New Zealand.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23I wouldn't say it's my dream at all.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27The fact we've never been, I think it's mad.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32Leaving the village life she sees as idyllic is just a step too far.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34It is, for me, is the family.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36It would be extremely hard.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39They'd be absolutely devastated, especially my mum.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41If we only stayed back because of them,

0:05:41 > 0:05:43JUST because of them, nothing else,

0:05:43 > 0:05:44I think that's a wrong decision.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Peter believes the chance to see the country first-hand

0:05:49 > 0:05:51could convince Denise.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54I think she still needs to...broaden her horizon

0:05:54 > 0:05:56and come out of the little bubble of village life

0:05:56 > 0:05:58and actually see what's going on in the real world.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02But it's not just her that's opposed to the dream Peter's chasing.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05Daughter, Ella, is firm in her opposition to a move.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08It's not like it's down the road,

0:06:08 > 0:06:11it's not like it's maybe, like, the country next door -

0:06:11 > 0:06:12it's across the world.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15And family, friends...

0:06:15 > 0:06:19it's all here and not anywhere else.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23The family are at loggerheads, and that's starting to take its toll.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26It has caused some tension, yeah.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30I want to go because I think I'll enjoy it a lot more over there.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33I want to stay because, like, I'll probably miss my...

0:06:34 > 0:06:35..like, family.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39At 46, Peter's approaching the cut-off age for a visa.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42The week ahead could be his last shot

0:06:42 > 0:06:45at having his 20-year-old dream come true.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47He's got a week to convince us that

0:06:47 > 0:06:49we're going to be better off out there,

0:06:49 > 0:06:51and I've got a week to convince him that he's not.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55Oh, for me, I want it 110%.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57It's just the opportunity that

0:06:57 > 0:07:00I feel that it is now or never for me.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11The Rowsells are spending their trial week in Auckland,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13New Zealand's largest city.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16Their base for the week is a secluded three-bedroom house

0:07:16 > 0:07:18in Beach Haven on Auckland's North Shore.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20It's Peter's birthday today,

0:07:20 > 0:07:23but will their temporary home be the perfect present

0:07:23 > 0:07:25and get Denise and Ella onside?

0:07:28 > 0:07:30Oh, it's beautiful.

0:07:30 > 0:07:31Peter's spellbound,

0:07:31 > 0:07:35and knowing his family's exhausted, tries to gee them up.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37So, if this is the start of the week...

0:07:37 > 0:07:39I know we're tired and all that now,

0:07:39 > 0:07:42but imagine what the next visit is going to be like, hopefully.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Better than a swimming pool in your garden, isn't it?

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Yeah, yeah. Bigger than a swimming pool.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48But as the family make themselves at home,

0:07:48 > 0:07:51the effects of the long flight mean it's dawning on Peter

0:07:51 > 0:07:55just what an uphill struggle he'll face over the next seven days.

0:07:59 > 0:08:00It was a strange flight.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03It seemed to go on and on and on and on.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05I think it's going to be a really hard time for me

0:08:05 > 0:08:07to convince the family now.

0:08:07 > 0:08:12Denise is already contemplating just how far she is from family.

0:08:12 > 0:08:13They're always there, aren't they?

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Come to the side of the world and you're on your own.

0:08:16 > 0:08:21Peter's adamant New Zealand could give his family a better life.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24I really want them to buy in with this dream of mine,

0:08:24 > 0:08:27but I still think it's going to be a real hard slog for me to do.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30He'll have his work cut out persuading Denise.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33Everything would have to be 110%

0:08:33 > 0:08:37to make me want to leave everything behind in the UK

0:08:37 > 0:08:38and I don't think it's going to be.

0:08:47 > 0:08:48Back in the UK,

0:08:48 > 0:08:51the Rowsells have renovated a three-bedroom property

0:08:51 > 0:08:53in the Suffolk village of Kedington.

0:08:53 > 0:08:57They both love their home after years of working hard on it.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01Spent a lot of time and effort into the house.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03It's a beautiful house, and I do love living here.

0:09:03 > 0:09:04It means a lot, this house.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06We've sort of taken a long time,

0:09:06 > 0:09:09but we've kind of finally getting there and...

0:09:09 > 0:09:12- he wants to leave it. - SHE LAUGHS

0:09:12 > 0:09:14When it comes to a home in New Zealand,

0:09:14 > 0:09:15Peter's not too ambitious.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19Something of a similar size and near a beach or near the coast.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22- We could move an hour of the road and be near the beach.- Oh, yeah.

0:09:24 > 0:09:25But one thing they both agree on

0:09:25 > 0:09:28is the need for extra space for visitors.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32A room that we could also be... Family can come over.

0:09:32 > 0:09:33Yeah, perhaps...

0:09:33 > 0:09:37- An extra room or something. - Perhaps a granny annexe.- Yeah.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45To find out what kind of house they could have in New Zealand,

0:09:45 > 0:09:48today we'll show the Rowsells three properties -

0:09:48 > 0:09:49two on budget

0:09:49 > 0:09:53and a third which could be their dream home.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56Only after they've seen each one will they find out its value.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02For their first viewing, the Rowsells travel 30 minutes north

0:10:02 > 0:10:05to Hatfields Beach on Auckland's Hibiscus Coast.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07The area boasts a family-friendly beach

0:10:07 > 0:10:11and a quiet lifestyle away from the buzz of the city.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13But will this four-bedroom house persuade Denise

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Peter's lifelong dream is worth considering?

0:10:18 > 0:10:19Immediately on arrival,

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Peter's trying to sell its positive qualities...

0:10:22 > 0:10:25A nice double garage, a good double-sized garage.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29..but inside, his efforts soon fall flat with Denise and Ella.

0:10:29 > 0:10:30Big kitchen.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33- Would you say it's as big as ours? - No.- No?

0:10:33 > 0:10:36- TARON:- No, it's a bit bigger. - Do you think it's not, no?

0:10:36 > 0:10:37- No, it's not bigger. - It's not bigger.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43Upstairs, the view from a balcony gets the thumbs up...

0:10:43 > 0:10:45You can see the sea over there, look.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47Yeah, you can see the beach.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50..but that's not enough to get Ella's approval.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52It's quite a bit smaller than our house, yeah.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Yeah, I wouldn't say quite a bit.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57And Peter seems to be on a losing streak

0:10:57 > 0:11:01when he's forced to admit the view from a bedroom is far from ideal.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03- Your neighbours, you can see straight in.- Straight in.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06- Don't like them looking straight in. - No, I must admit that is...

0:11:06 > 0:11:08- Quite intimidating, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:11:08 > 0:11:13Outside, the garden gets a...let's say lukewarm reaction.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Can't kick a ball around in here, can you, Taron?

0:11:15 > 0:11:18I think that that bit round the side

0:11:18 > 0:11:21would be, like, big enough for me to just play with the dog,

0:11:21 > 0:11:23but I don't think it would be big enough for me

0:11:23 > 0:11:25to play, like, football.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28This house hasn't had what it takes to win anyone over,

0:11:28 > 0:11:33but is it something they could afford on their £400,000 budget?

0:11:33 > 0:11:35I think this is valued at

0:11:35 > 0:11:38about 300,000 to 350,000 British pounds.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42I'm hoping it's about £250,000

0:11:42 > 0:11:44because then...

0:11:45 > 0:11:48- ..if we... We can go bigger...- Yeah.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51- ..cos I just feel this is too small.- OK.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Turn it over, Elle. Straight over. Just straight over.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02- That isn't...- Ergh...

0:12:02 > 0:12:05Yeah, that's a lot more than what I thought.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08396,000 British pounds.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11That's just £4,000 under their budget.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15It's shocked me now and it worries me now.

0:12:15 > 0:12:16- Doesn't worry me.- No.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19- DENISE LAUGHS - It does worry me.

0:12:19 > 0:12:20Definitely food for thought.

0:12:20 > 0:12:25That does put a big demand on, obviously, now salaries.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28- Pushing, obviously... - And the value of our house.

0:12:28 > 0:12:29And the value of our house, yeah.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31It's going to have to be a lot better than this

0:12:31 > 0:12:33to persuade me and Mum, especially.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39Affording the coastal living Peter wants

0:12:39 > 0:12:42with the space the family need could be a struggle,

0:12:42 > 0:12:44so will the next house fare any better?

0:12:45 > 0:12:49To find out, the Rowsells travel just a few minutes to Red Beach,

0:12:49 > 0:12:51an area experiencing a building boom

0:12:51 > 0:12:54driven by Aucklanders opting for

0:12:54 > 0:12:56a more relaxed lifestyle by the beach.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58Looks like a very nice cul-de-sac.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01On arrival, the neighbourhood goes down well.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03- I like the area. - I prefer the area...

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- Bigger area, nice... - It's spread out.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09A bit more like home.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Inside, the kitchen gets a good reaction from Denise.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14- Ooh.- That's a nice kitchen.

0:13:14 > 0:13:15- That's a nice open-plan.- It's clean.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18And even Ella's impressed.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20- What do you think, Ella? - Yeah.- Yeah?

0:13:20 > 0:13:21Front room.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Oh, it's a front room, separate diner.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27- It's a good idea having two doors opening out.- Yeah, that's nice.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30The bedrooms, each with built-in wardrobes, go down well.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32It's nice looking over at the other houses.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35They're all nice, sort of more spread out.

0:13:35 > 0:13:39This house could be working wonders on the ladies,

0:13:39 > 0:13:41and the master bedroom's perfect.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44- It's got an en-suite. - It's got an en-suite.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46- Yeah.- That's a nice size.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48Nice size. Yeah, that's a nice size en-suite.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Ah, a walk-in wardrobe.

0:13:51 > 0:13:57A spacious double garage means plenty of room for storage...or laundry.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59That's a nice big garage for you to fill

0:13:59 > 0:14:00like the one you've got at home.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02- Yeah, yeah. - DENISE GIGGLES

0:14:02 > 0:14:05- You could do something in here. - You could do your washing.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07Your washing, utilities. It's a nice-sized garage.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09Electric door, nice big-sized double garage.

0:14:09 > 0:14:10It's all going well,

0:14:10 > 0:14:14until a step into the garden sees reactions take a turn for the worse.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Not much outdoor space.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- I'm not that keen on it. I think it's quite...- Why?

0:14:19 > 0:14:21- Huh?- Why?- It's quite small.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25- What about you, Taron? - I don't like it, really, at all.

0:14:25 > 0:14:26The garden's not great,

0:14:26 > 0:14:30but inside, this house does have the space the family wanted.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33So, with £400,000 to spend, is it within reach?

0:14:35 > 0:14:37What do you reckon, now, having seen the two properties?

0:14:37 > 0:14:40- What do you reckon? More or less? - I think less.

0:14:40 > 0:14:41Less. I think less.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44I think this is going to be in our budget quite comfortably.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48I reckon it'll be about the same, just because the area looks nicer.

0:14:48 > 0:14:53The other one was 395, so I reckon this is around...300.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55- No.- 250, 300.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57- I reckon the same. - I think it's more than that.

0:14:57 > 0:14:58- Yeah?- I reckon the same.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00- I think it's... - Or even a little bit more.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07Go on, then, Taron, let's see what the...

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Do you want to turn the card over?

0:15:09 > 0:15:12- Ergh...- Whoa!- Told you.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15That's £15,000 over their budget.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18That's...that is surprising. 415,000.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21- I thought it'd be more. - It's more than the other house.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Yeah, you could see just driving up, it's a better area.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26Got a nice house at home anyway...

0:15:26 > 0:15:28that we're happy in.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30Some are.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32- We are.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35The reality of Auckland's property prices

0:15:35 > 0:15:38is beginning to hit home with Peter.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40It is difficult for me at the moment.

0:15:41 > 0:15:46It has been my dream to come out here for the past 24 years, and...

0:15:48 > 0:15:50..yeah, it's knocking me for six, personally.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55For the final property of the day,

0:15:55 > 0:15:58we found the Rowsells what could be their ideal home...

0:15:59 > 0:16:02..a short hop away in neighbouring Orewa.

0:16:02 > 0:16:07Just two years old, this villa has four bedrooms and sea views.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09It should offer everything the family want,

0:16:09 > 0:16:12but that could come at an even higher cost.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16Once more, Peter's happy with the area.

0:16:16 > 0:16:20Looks nice here. Nice open area. Nice views.

0:16:20 > 0:16:24And inside, he starts a sales pitch again.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28This is a...sitting room, I would assume.

0:16:28 > 0:16:29It's even got views of the sea.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34I do like this one. This one's ticking the boxes so far...

0:16:34 > 0:16:35- Yeah.- ..for me.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38With two bedrooms downstairs,

0:16:38 > 0:16:41the family begin to speculate on the floor plan.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46- So, ah... So, what is it? - It could be an upside-down house.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49- So, downstairs is...- Yeah. - Sleeping area's downstairs,

0:16:49 > 0:16:52and the living quarter's upstairs, obviously, for the better views.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Upstairs brings a real smile to Peter's face.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00That's all right. That's much better.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02That's nice. Nice open-plan.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06Nice sitting area outside and inside.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09Look at the views - you're not going to beat them views.

0:17:10 > 0:17:11And it appears this could be

0:17:11 > 0:17:14some place Denise and Ella could call home.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18- So, what do you think about this then, Ella?- I like it.- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21- I like this house a lot. - Yeah, I like this house.- Good.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23Yeah, no, it's nice. Can't beat that view, can you?

0:17:23 > 0:17:25Nope. No, no, definitely.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28Back inside, the master bedroom gets the seal of approval.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32- This is a nice big bedroom.- Yeah. - So, this would be our room.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35Looks like it goes all the way through.

0:17:36 > 0:17:41Ah, it's an en-suite. So, this is the bathroom. Very nice.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44But already, Peter's worrying about the cost.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46This place is going to be a shocker for us.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50A spacious garden means everyone's sold on this home.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52So, out of the three, you find this one's the best one?

0:17:52 > 0:17:55This is the nicest house, the biggest house.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59It really could be the family's dream house,

0:17:59 > 0:18:03but will it be affordable given their budget of £400,000?

0:18:03 > 0:18:09- I think it'll be about £400,000 to £500,000.- Pounds?

0:18:09 > 0:18:11I think about the same as the last house.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15I think it's going to be more again.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18Probably 450.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Around about 450, 459.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23- It's going to be the most expensive out of the lot.- Mm-hm.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26- Cos it's the one we like.- Yeah.

0:18:26 > 0:18:27- You don't want to, do you? - You ready?

0:18:37 > 0:18:40It's more than £100,000 over budget.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43For me, it's gutting. I wish I had...

0:18:43 > 0:18:45Like I said before, I wish I'd done it 20 years ago.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48Unless they can increase their earnings, it's out of reach,

0:18:48 > 0:18:49and Peter's distraught.

0:18:50 > 0:18:55Now, probably, for me, house wise prices is out of my reach...

0:18:55 > 0:18:58unless, at the end of the week, we see things that can turn it.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04A day house-hunting on Auckland's North Shore

0:19:04 > 0:19:06has shown the whole family getting a house they'd like

0:19:06 > 0:19:08would cost them dearly.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11Property one failed to impress,

0:19:11 > 0:19:14with small rooms and a tiny garden.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17While the space offered by property two was an improvement,

0:19:17 > 0:19:19again, the outside space wasn't a patch

0:19:19 > 0:19:21on what the family have at home.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25And though property three did hit the mark,

0:19:25 > 0:19:27delivering everything everyone wanted,

0:19:27 > 0:19:29it came with an eye-watering price tag.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34Peter's week isn't off to the best of starts,

0:19:34 > 0:19:38so how will the family vote when it comes to properties at home or away?

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Based on the three houses we've seen today in New Zealand,

0:19:43 > 0:19:44our vote's going to be...

0:19:52 > 0:19:54- ..New Zealand.- UK.- England.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58Yeah, of course. I thought that would happen.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01Why have you chosen England?

0:20:01 > 0:20:05The third house was all right. It was liveable.

0:20:05 > 0:20:06But the other two, they were just...

0:20:08 > 0:20:10- Why did you choose England?- Snap.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13I liked the third house, but I don't know we can afford it.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17The quality of life over here will potentially outweigh that.

0:20:17 > 0:20:18Fair enough.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20- Girl power.- LAUGHING:- Girl power.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26Auckland's soaring property prices

0:20:26 > 0:20:29means Peter's got an even tougher task ahead of him

0:20:29 > 0:20:32if he's ever to persuade his wife and daughter to make the move.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35Promising job opportunities and increased salaries in New Zealand

0:20:35 > 0:20:37could help his case.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43Back in the UK, Peter's a maintenance manager

0:20:43 > 0:20:45for a pharmaceutical company.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49The reason I like the job is the people, the variety.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Every day is different - there's no same day,

0:20:51 > 0:20:54we always have challenges throughout the day.

0:20:54 > 0:20:59Denise works part-time at the local doctor's surgery as an administrator.

0:20:59 > 0:21:00Yeah, I really like my job.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02I enjoy everything about it, really,

0:21:02 > 0:21:05and I really enjoy working for the NHS.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07It's just real life.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10You're sort of seeing different things,

0:21:10 > 0:21:12and it's interesting.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14Peter's prepared to sacrifice some salary

0:21:14 > 0:21:16to achieve the life he wants.

0:21:16 > 0:21:20If, after when we weigh up all the pros and cons

0:21:20 > 0:21:22with the lifestyle and the salary side of it,

0:21:22 > 0:21:24if that means I have to take a drop, then...

0:21:24 > 0:21:27but the lifestyle and the quality of life is still there,

0:21:27 > 0:21:30then, you know, that's something I will consider.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Denise, meanwhile, wants a post with some flexibility

0:21:33 > 0:21:35to increase her hours.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38A part-time job that potentially could sort of up the hours

0:21:38 > 0:21:41as the children get older and settled.

0:21:43 > 0:21:44It's a big day for Peter

0:21:44 > 0:21:47as he sets off to investigate work possibilities.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50He's painfully aware his dream could live or die

0:21:50 > 0:21:52based on what he discovers today.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55It's very important for me this goes well today.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58I need to know is it going to be the right move.

0:21:58 > 0:22:02House prices in New Zealand are higher than what I expected,

0:22:02 > 0:22:05so today I really need to get a good feeling of the job prospects.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07If she did make the move,

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Denise feels work could help her integrate into New Zealand life.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14It's important for me to have a job here,

0:22:14 > 0:22:17because I think to come out and not have a job would be awful.

0:22:17 > 0:22:18You won't get to meet people...

0:22:20 > 0:22:24You know, stuck at home all day would be...would be a nightmare.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27Peter heads to a health care company where he gets a quick tour

0:22:27 > 0:22:31with maintenance team leader Andrew, an expat.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36I and my team look after the production machinery,

0:22:36 > 0:22:40we do have a separate facility maintenance team as well.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44Peter's keen to hear if working in New Zealand

0:22:44 > 0:22:48would let him take advantage of the lifestyle he wants.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50What is the work-life balance like here?

0:22:50 > 0:22:53I still have to come to work, but I must admit,

0:22:53 > 0:22:56- I spend more time outdoors than in front of a TV.- Yeah.

0:22:56 > 0:23:01Weekends, predominantly tramping, surfing, kayaking.

0:23:01 > 0:23:02My biggest question -

0:23:02 > 0:23:04might sound a silly question cos you've been here 14 years -

0:23:04 > 0:23:06did you make the right move?

0:23:06 > 0:23:08I absolutely made the right move.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12Not just for me, personally, but for my children as well.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15That's the answer he was hoping for.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18Next, Peter meets Emma-Jane from recruitment

0:23:18 > 0:23:20and asks about his qualifications.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23Is my City & Guilds and NVQ Level 3s,

0:23:23 > 0:23:27do they correspond to the type of skills in New Zealand?

0:23:27 > 0:23:28We do have a lot of employees

0:23:28 > 0:23:31that have emigrated from the UK and Ireland,

0:23:31 > 0:23:34and we are really familiar with those qualifications.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38They are qualifications that are very well recognised here.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40In the last six months, I've been in a management role.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Do you think that's the kind of position

0:23:42 > 0:23:45- I could bring over to this company? - To be completely honest with you,

0:23:45 > 0:23:48when we are entertaining a candidate outside of New Zealand,

0:23:48 > 0:23:51they do need to have at least three to four years management experience.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57Having to take a step backwards is disappointing,

0:23:57 > 0:23:59but what other job opportunities exist?

0:24:00 > 0:24:04OK, so a management role may be out of the question at this moment.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07Is there any other positions you feel my qualifications would suit?

0:24:07 > 0:24:10So, the positions that we would consider you for

0:24:10 > 0:24:13is maintenance within the manufacturing environment.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16We have roles that are either new roles or replacement roles.

0:24:16 > 0:24:20They tend to come up...every six months.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23So there are definitely roles that we could consider you for.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26That's much more promising.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30Meanwhile, across town, Denise is at Westmere Medical Centre

0:24:30 > 0:24:32where she meets practice manager Melissa.

0:24:32 > 0:24:36- Hi, Denise. I'm Melissa.- Hello. - Nice to meet you.- And you.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38A quick tour of the facilities shows Denise

0:24:38 > 0:24:40she could gain some fringe benefits.

0:24:40 > 0:24:44- This is our lovely staffroom area. - Very nice.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46- Look, and a garden.- Yes.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49- And we have staff get-togethers and things here.- Yeah.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53We do try and have nice times with the staff as well as hard work.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55Yeah, that's good.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57Then it's straight down to business.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59Do you think I'd be able to find a job here

0:24:59 > 0:25:00quite easily in New Zealand?

0:25:00 > 0:25:04Yes, yes, I think medical receptionists and administrators

0:25:04 > 0:25:07are quite sought-after because, for some reason,

0:25:07 > 0:25:12there seems to be not so many with the skills that are required.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14Denise could slot right in here,

0:25:14 > 0:25:17but what about the all-important wages?

0:25:17 > 0:25:21Can you tell me what sort of salary I'd be expected to get here?

0:25:21 > 0:25:23I think, probably, you would be on

0:25:23 > 0:25:27a starting wage of about 22, 23 an hour.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29That's around ten pounds per hour.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33I'm not sure if that's compatible to what you earn in the UK.

0:25:33 > 0:25:34That's more than what I'm,

0:25:34 > 0:25:36a little bit more than what I'm on in the UK.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39- Oh, that's encouraging.- Yeah.

0:25:41 > 0:25:45Outside, Denise is sounding pretty upbeat.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48It's very reassuring to know that if we did move

0:25:48 > 0:25:51that, hopefully, I'd have, you know, potentially good job.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53But she knows, as the main breadwinner,

0:25:53 > 0:25:57it's Peter salary that could make all the difference.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00It all hinges on Peter's job, really.

0:26:00 > 0:26:04Obviously, after the shock of the house prices as well,

0:26:04 > 0:26:06if his job's not right with the right money,

0:26:06 > 0:26:09then it's just not even a consideration.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11To find out about his earnings,

0:26:11 > 0:26:14Peter meets recruitment consultant John Lawson.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16You've been through my CV and all that.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18What kind of salary would I expect?

0:26:18 > 0:26:20The opportunity for you and looking at your background

0:26:20 > 0:26:22and your experience is to say,

0:26:22 > 0:26:24what is the value that you could bring to organisations

0:26:24 > 0:26:26- as that type of expert?- Yeah.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29The remuneration for those sorts of positions

0:26:29 > 0:26:33then jumps through into the early 100s.

0:26:33 > 0:26:37100,000, up to 110, 120.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41That's around £50,000,

0:26:41 > 0:26:44approximately ten percent more than he earns at home,

0:26:44 > 0:26:46and Peter's delighted.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48His dream could be back on.

0:26:48 > 0:26:50This morning I was a bit apprehensive

0:26:50 > 0:26:52of what kind of salaries I can expect,

0:26:52 > 0:26:53but now it's looking good.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57It does mean to me that the move is still on.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01So, after everything they've discovered,

0:27:01 > 0:27:04will the couple choose work in New Zealand or the UK?

0:27:04 > 0:27:07Based on our job experience today, our votes are going to be...

0:27:14 > 0:27:17- ..New Zealand.- New Zealand.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19So, why have you chose New Zealand?

0:27:19 > 0:27:23Because...it's a lot more chilled atmosphere.

0:27:24 > 0:27:25I must admit, today,

0:27:25 > 0:27:29the environment on the shop floor at the company I just went to,

0:27:29 > 0:27:33it is a lot more relaxed, chilled.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35The consultant I saw was really chilled,

0:27:35 > 0:27:38and the potential for me here is really, really good.

0:27:42 > 0:27:46He may be delighted with a first vote for New Zealand from Denise,

0:27:46 > 0:27:49but Peter's still got a long way to go

0:27:49 > 0:27:52if he's to get the entire family to sign up

0:27:52 > 0:27:55to his vision of their future.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57With a new-found bounce in his step,

0:27:57 > 0:27:59will his winning streak continue

0:27:59 > 0:28:03after a day exploring the legendary Kiwi outdoors lifestyle?

0:28:06 > 0:28:09The family head for a wander along Takapuna Beach,

0:28:09 > 0:28:12which boasts stunning views of nearby Rangitoto Island.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22You're not going to get a better view than this.

0:28:22 > 0:28:25It's a great opportunity for photography fan Ella

0:28:25 > 0:28:26to make the most of the scenery.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31Look how many pictures you've taken already just for...

0:28:31 > 0:28:33being out here in a nice environment.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36Wouldn't get this in England, that's for certain.

0:28:36 > 0:28:40And Peter and Taron take advantage of the low tide to explore rock pools.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42Hey, Taz, a starfish. Look.

0:28:44 > 0:28:46- Hello. - PETER CHUCKLES

0:28:47 > 0:28:49I feel like we're on holiday.

0:28:49 > 0:28:50It is lovely.

0:28:50 > 0:28:52For Peter, their time on the beach

0:28:52 > 0:28:55sums up just why he's so keen to make the move.

0:28:56 > 0:29:00Biggest thing for me, to draw me here is the lifestyle, easily.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02I've see people leave work, pull a boat into the water

0:29:02 > 0:29:05and just go swimming, just enjoying life,

0:29:05 > 0:29:07and you don't get that in England.

0:29:07 > 0:29:08What's it like, Denise?

0:29:08 > 0:29:10- DENISE GASPS - I've broken the barnacle.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13Oh, dear.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15Mind yourself. Hey, mind yourself.

0:29:15 > 0:29:19But the lure of a sunny life by the sea isn't swaying Ella.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21When we go on holiday, we go to a hot country

0:29:21 > 0:29:23and we go to the beach and things like that,

0:29:23 > 0:29:26and then, to live on it, it wouldn't feel right.

0:29:26 > 0:29:31And I just couldn't... It's too warm all the time.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33And when the family head to a cafe beside the beach,

0:29:33 > 0:29:36Ella finds the opportunity to make her thoughts clear.

0:29:45 > 0:29:47With Ella close to school leaving age,

0:29:47 > 0:29:49Peter, clutching at straws,

0:29:49 > 0:29:52spots a way of perhaps keeping everyone happy.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06It's a possible solution, but Denise isn't happy.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08- No, she's in her last year. - I know she's in her last year.

0:30:08 > 0:30:13But what I'm saying is, would you leave her at home with Nan,

0:30:13 > 0:30:18and then come out, and she can come and join us at Christmas...?

0:30:18 > 0:30:20- No.- No?- No.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23Peter's desperate to cling onto his dream,

0:30:23 > 0:30:25but even he realises splitting his family for good

0:30:25 > 0:30:28could be too tough a step to take.

0:30:29 > 0:30:32I don't really want to leave my daughter home,

0:30:32 > 0:30:33which is quite worrying.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42- CRYING:- It has been my dream for 20-odd years,

0:30:42 > 0:30:46but, obviously, my daughter is my number one.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52Peter's passionate in his belief

0:30:52 > 0:30:55New Zealand could give his family a better life,

0:30:55 > 0:30:57but Ella's steadfast in her opinion

0:30:57 > 0:31:00and overcoming that could be insurmountable.

0:31:00 > 0:31:04With the atmosphere tense, the family head into Auckland city centre.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08With Peter and Ella both camera buffs,

0:31:08 > 0:31:11we've arranged for the family to take a dusk photography tour

0:31:11 > 0:31:12with tutor Lea.

0:31:12 > 0:31:16With manual, basically, it's all about light, right, photography?

0:31:16 > 0:31:19And it's all about how we control that light,

0:31:19 > 0:31:21and manual mode actually allows us to do that.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24And it's not long before they're getting snap-happy.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36It's been a day filled with emotion,

0:31:36 > 0:31:40but has the Kiwi lifestyle done enough to win everyone over?

0:31:40 > 0:31:43Based on our lifestyle experience today, our votes are going to be...

0:31:50 > 0:31:51..New Zealand.

0:31:56 > 0:31:59Fair enough. Why...why undecided, Ella?

0:31:59 > 0:32:01I mean, I enjoyed it,

0:32:01 > 0:32:04but I feel like we could have done this in the UK.

0:32:05 > 0:32:07I liked going along the beaches,

0:32:07 > 0:32:09and in England, you couldn't do that.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11OK. What about you, Denise?

0:32:11 > 0:32:15I enjoyed the day, but I don't still feel like I can live here.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17I enjoyed the day all together.

0:32:17 > 0:32:19As a family, I thought it was a good activity.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21It was nice to see Ella enjoying herself as well this evening,

0:32:21 > 0:32:24so that's why I voted New Zealand.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36With the family split right down the middle,

0:32:36 > 0:32:39Peter could be fighting a losing battle.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42Could a detailed look at how their finances would pan out down under

0:32:42 > 0:32:44give him a glimmer of hope?

0:32:46 > 0:32:51He and Denise feel their house in the UK is worth around £340,000.

0:32:51 > 0:32:54We sent round two estate agents to give their valuations.

0:32:57 > 0:32:59Ooh, good - our kitchen.

0:32:59 > 0:33:03'Lovely country-style farmhouse kitchen set back from the road.

0:33:03 > 0:33:05'The first of the three reception rooms -

0:33:05 > 0:33:08'really nice feel about it with solid oak flooring

0:33:08 > 0:33:10'and the wood burner, in particular, features.

0:33:10 > 0:33:12'Again, we've got a nice, spacious dining room,

0:33:12 > 0:33:15'French doors leading out into the garden a particular highlight.'

0:33:15 > 0:33:16- ELLA:- My room.- Your room.

0:33:16 > 0:33:18- Going in.- Is it going to be clean? Yes, it is clean.

0:33:18 > 0:33:20So, a good-sized double bedroom,

0:33:20 > 0:33:24beautiful feature fireplace part of the older part of the property.

0:33:24 > 0:33:25Our bedroom now.

0:33:26 > 0:33:28It's a beautiful master bedroom,

0:33:28 > 0:33:32it's got its separate dressing area, plenty of built-in storage.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34- Taron's room.- Got a really nice-sized third bedroom.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37Really refreshing to see three doubles in the house.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40'So, the family bathroom, needs a bit of finishing off in a few areas,

0:33:40 > 0:33:42'but generally not in too bad condition.'

0:33:43 > 0:33:46In today's market, we would value this property at £350,000.

0:33:46 > 0:33:50For a quick sale, we'd put it on the market for £325,000.

0:33:50 > 0:33:51In today's market, I would value

0:33:51 > 0:33:54this property at around £315,000.

0:33:54 > 0:33:57For a quick sale, I would recommend placing the property

0:33:57 > 0:33:59on the market for around £300,000.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02I must admit, the price is a bit lower than what I thought.

0:34:02 > 0:34:04No, I sort of thought 340, so that's...

0:34:04 > 0:34:07One went 315 to quick sale 300.

0:34:07 > 0:34:10- Yeah.- That's a lot. - Yeah.- That's a big drop.

0:34:10 > 0:34:13The estimates are lower than Peter had been hoping for.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16Next, the couple compare the cost of living in New Zealand with the UK,

0:34:16 > 0:34:18starting with the weekly food shop.

0:34:20 > 0:34:22- Milk.- Milk. Oh, God.

0:34:22 > 0:34:27So that's £1.91 more for a four-pint bottle.

0:34:27 > 0:34:29Potatoes. Potatoes are a lot more.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32At the moment, most of them are more expensive.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34566.

0:34:34 > 0:34:36Which is a difference of...

0:34:36 > 0:34:39£8.20 worse off in New Zealand.

0:34:39 > 0:34:44Spending around £35 a month more on groceries wouldn't break the bank.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47- ..which I think is pretty good. - It's not bad.- Not bad.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50Next, the couple move on to examine their bigger outgoings,

0:34:50 > 0:34:53basing their figures on the dream home they viewed.

0:34:53 > 0:34:55Oh, jeez!

0:34:55 > 0:34:58The mortgage is a huge amount difference to that.

0:34:58 > 0:35:01- That's four times as much.- Mm.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03- And electricity is more. - And electricity is more.

0:35:06 > 0:35:07In total, the couple discover

0:35:07 > 0:35:13they'd be spending £1,874 more each month in New Zealand.

0:35:13 > 0:35:14That's a shock for me.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16I mean, I kind of thought it'd be more,

0:35:16 > 0:35:19- but didn't expect it to be... - That high.- ..double.

0:35:19 > 0:35:20- No.- Over double.- Mm-hm.

0:35:22 > 0:35:23That is a shock.

0:35:23 > 0:35:24It's a blow for Peter.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28Such a significant hike in outgoings would be hard to shoulder.

0:35:29 > 0:35:32And even when they take their increased salaries into account,

0:35:32 > 0:35:34the outcome isn't great.

0:35:34 > 0:35:39- £898 better off in the UK. - In the UK.- ..per month.- Per month.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41- It's a lot of money. - That is a lot of money.

0:35:41 > 0:35:45Being over £10,000 worse off each year in New Zealand

0:35:45 > 0:35:48is a devastating outcome for Peter.

0:35:48 > 0:35:51I've seen the lifestyle that I'd like to have here

0:35:51 > 0:35:56and today, that dream has probably been shattered.

0:35:59 > 0:36:04It's time to vote on finances in the UK versus New Zealand.

0:36:04 > 0:36:07Based on our reality check today, our votes are going to be...

0:36:12 > 0:36:13- ..UK.- UK.

0:36:15 > 0:36:16The cost of living,

0:36:16 > 0:36:20well, the mortgage has made a big difference in that decision.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23- I think you've been true to yourself.- Yeah, I am.

0:36:23 > 0:36:24- Mm-hm.- Mm.

0:36:29 > 0:36:32Despite the country delivering the lifestyle Peter wants,

0:36:32 > 0:36:36the figures have shown achieving it would mean taking a financial hit.

0:36:36 > 0:36:38Peter's vision of his family's future

0:36:38 > 0:36:40could be slipping further from his grasp,

0:36:40 > 0:36:44and he's yet to face possibly his biggest hurdle.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47Having first discussed it with the children,

0:36:47 > 0:36:51the family sit down to watch messages from loved ones at home together.

0:36:51 > 0:36:52Hi, Peter and Denise.

0:36:52 > 0:36:53- Hello.- Hello.

0:36:53 > 0:36:54Hi, Peter.

0:36:54 > 0:36:57I hope you've had a fantastic time.

0:36:57 > 0:36:59Peter, a very nice guy.

0:36:59 > 0:37:02Very helpful, useful guy to have around.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05- Good with the IT. - Especially with the IT.- Helps us.

0:37:05 > 0:37:10If I would describe Denise, I would say she's a real homegirl,

0:37:10 > 0:37:13she's a real, you know, family-orientated person.

0:37:13 > 0:37:15The kids, they're fun.

0:37:15 > 0:37:18Taron's a bit of a live wire, as you'll find out, no doubt.

0:37:18 > 0:37:22Ella is a great girl. She's, you know, she's a great niece to me.

0:37:22 > 0:37:24She loves her photography,

0:37:24 > 0:37:27and I think one day she's going to be a fantastic photographer.

0:37:27 > 0:37:30They're lovely. They've helped me a lot in the past.

0:37:30 > 0:37:32Some much so, you know...

0:37:32 > 0:37:33They've really looked after Joshua

0:37:33 > 0:37:35for me at times.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38Yeah, they're just a fantastic family.

0:37:38 > 0:37:41I think the world of them, I really do.

0:37:41 > 0:37:43My parents would miss him terribly,

0:37:43 > 0:37:45and obviously, Denise, I know Denise's parents

0:37:45 > 0:37:47would miss the family as well.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49I would miss them dreadfully.

0:37:49 > 0:37:54- I'd miss things like Ella learning to drive...- Yeah.- ..turning 18.

0:37:54 > 0:37:57All the things that you think you're going to do together,

0:37:57 > 0:38:00you know, suddenly that might not happen.

0:38:00 > 0:38:02My heart says one thing

0:38:02 > 0:38:03and my head says another,

0:38:03 > 0:38:06but, you know, I can't stand in their way.

0:38:06 > 0:38:09We're not young any more.

0:38:09 > 0:38:11You know, we're getting on, obviously.

0:38:11 > 0:38:14We'd like to see the grandchildren grow up and...

0:38:14 > 0:38:16And hopefully get married

0:38:16 > 0:38:19and perhaps have children and have great grandchildren,

0:38:19 > 0:38:22and if they're out there, we would never see them,

0:38:22 > 0:38:24and that would be really hard.

0:38:24 > 0:38:26- Very hard.- Mm.

0:38:26 > 0:38:28It's down to you, son. Good luck.

0:38:35 > 0:38:37A little surprised my mum and dad actually spoke,

0:38:37 > 0:38:41which I kind of think that goes...shows quite a bit, actually.

0:38:41 > 0:38:44I think it showed that they were keen to put across their view.

0:38:44 > 0:38:48- Yeah, well...- Yeah, which is fine, it's not a problem.

0:38:48 > 0:38:49They put their view across,

0:38:49 > 0:38:52and I know how adamant they do not want us to go,

0:38:52 > 0:38:54and that's fair enough.

0:38:54 > 0:38:58I just don't want to move out here and not see them all.

0:38:58 > 0:39:00I think it would be extremely hard

0:39:00 > 0:39:03to just pack everything up, move here,

0:39:03 > 0:39:06have no-one here to support us here

0:39:06 > 0:39:08when we've got all the support at home,

0:39:08 > 0:39:11which we could have for years to come.

0:39:13 > 0:39:15Whereas when we move here, we've got no-one.

0:39:15 > 0:39:16It would just be us.

0:39:20 > 0:39:22After being dealt a blow

0:39:22 > 0:39:25by the financial implications of achieving his dream,

0:39:25 > 0:39:30the reality of leaving loved ones may have also cost Peter dearly.

0:39:30 > 0:39:31For most of his life,

0:39:31 > 0:39:35he's coveted the idea of one day settling in New Zealand,

0:39:35 > 0:39:39so as the family's turn of their cards approaches,

0:39:39 > 0:39:42is his dream on the verge of coming true

0:39:42 > 0:39:44or about to disappear forever?

0:39:47 > 0:39:48For two and a half decades,

0:39:48 > 0:39:51Peter's hankered after a life in New Zealand,

0:39:51 > 0:39:54and the week's confirmed for him it's the place he wants to be.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57The quality of life I've seen here now,

0:39:57 > 0:39:59beside the sea with the nice sun and all that,

0:39:59 > 0:40:03means that's the kind of environment I want to live in.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06For Taron, too, the country's proved an all-round winner.

0:40:06 > 0:40:10I like the beaches, the heat, the views...

0:40:11 > 0:40:13..the food.

0:40:13 > 0:40:15But while the trial week's challenged

0:40:15 > 0:40:18Denise's perceptions of New Zealand...

0:40:18 > 0:40:21It has kind of brought me round.

0:40:21 > 0:40:25It has made me think differently to when I came out.

0:40:25 > 0:40:29..Kiwi living hasn't exactly worked its charms on all the family.

0:40:29 > 0:40:33I just find that it's not really somewhere I'd want to live.

0:40:33 > 0:40:37It's more just come visit here for holiday or something.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40Peter worries Ella's opinion might put paid to his dream.

0:40:41 > 0:40:42I'm absolutely devastated.

0:40:42 > 0:40:48It's heartbreaking to watch her make a decision for the family.

0:40:48 > 0:40:51So, we have got his dreams, like, in our hands,

0:40:51 > 0:40:55but at the end of the day, it's not just his decision.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58And Peter's spirit seems close to breaking point.

0:40:59 > 0:41:01I don't think it's going to come true.

0:41:04 > 0:41:06I don't think my dream's going to come true.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09It's...

0:41:10 > 0:41:11..very emotional.

0:41:15 > 0:41:18It's like a flame now has been extinguished for me.

0:41:20 > 0:41:21That's how much it feels.

0:41:25 > 0:41:27But with how Denise will vote unclear,

0:41:27 > 0:41:30he's clinging onto a glimmer of hope.

0:41:30 > 0:41:35If I'm honest, I'm probably not 100% sure what I'm going to vote.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38If they turn over that card and it's on New Zealand,

0:41:38 > 0:41:42that would be all my Christmases, all my birthdays,

0:41:42 > 0:41:43everything all in one.

0:41:43 > 0:41:45It would be an absolutely amazing feeling.

0:41:45 > 0:41:49I've lived... I can have my dream. I can start living again.

0:41:50 > 0:41:54After 24 years, everything rests on these final minutes

0:41:54 > 0:41:57as the family decide where their future lies.

0:41:58 > 0:41:59After a fantastic week

0:41:59 > 0:42:02and an adventure that we've all really enjoyed,

0:42:02 > 0:42:06this is going to be our final vote whether it's UK or New Zealand.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18- New Zealand.- UK.

0:42:20 > 0:42:25Well, I have chosen to go undecided, but veering towards the UK.

0:42:25 > 0:42:29I don't think we could realistically afford to live here.

0:42:29 > 0:42:30Taron, why have you chosen New Zealand?

0:42:30 > 0:42:33Because I really enjoyed it here,

0:42:33 > 0:42:36and it's got really good beaches and houses.

0:42:36 > 0:42:40- Ella, why 100% UK? - I couldn't live here.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42This isn't home.

0:42:42 > 0:42:46I feel that that there's potential to still come over here,

0:42:46 > 0:42:50not in Auckland, but other areas of the island

0:42:50 > 0:42:53and be able to afford and have a comfortable life

0:42:53 > 0:42:58with the quality of life that I feel, as a family, we deserve.

0:43:03 > 0:43:07Peter may have been beaten, but he's definitely not defeated,

0:43:07 > 0:43:12remaining hopeful New Zealand may still become home one day.

0:43:12 > 0:43:13Whether it happens or not,

0:43:13 > 0:43:16we hope the Rowsell's future is a happy one.
