0:00:02 > 0:00:03All of us have a dream,

0:00:03 > 0:00:04but if you've been

0:00:04 > 0:00:05through the torment

0:00:05 > 0:00:07of seeing your biggest one vanish,

0:00:07 > 0:00:10how far would you go to ensure your next one came true,

0:00:10 > 0:00:12especially if you had to convince your partner

0:00:12 > 0:00:15to sacrifice everything they love

0:00:15 > 0:00:18for a new life on the other side of the world?

0:00:19 > 0:00:21Former Olympic diver Ben Swain

0:00:21 > 0:00:25is desperate to carve out a new life in Australia.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28There's more things in Australia that appeal to me

0:00:28 > 0:00:30that I could be doing

0:00:30 > 0:00:32that I just don't have an opportunity to do here.

0:00:32 > 0:00:37But happily-settled-in-the-UK wife Kate's far from convinced.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41For me to kind of have the same enthusiasm as Ben is difficult

0:00:41 > 0:00:45because I've got a lot more to lose than he does.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47When a trial week down under shows them both

0:00:47 > 0:00:49what moving could really cost...

0:00:49 > 0:00:52I don't think we'd be able to afford that anyway.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53It's not looking good so far.

0:00:53 > 0:00:58..will Ben see his dream come true or watch it sink forever?

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Famed for its laid-back lifestyle,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26spectacular scenery and a buoyant economy,

0:01:26 > 0:01:30Australia's been the number one destination for Brits moving abroad

0:01:30 > 0:01:32for the last two decades.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35On average, every day, 23 families from the UK

0:01:35 > 0:01:39arrive in the country to start a new life in the sun,

0:01:39 > 0:01:43so it's no surprise 5% of the country's total population

0:01:43 > 0:01:44were born in Britain.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Ever since representing Great Britain

0:01:49 > 0:01:51at the Commonwealth Games in 2006,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53former Olympic diver Ben Swain

0:01:53 > 0:01:57has dreamt of setting up home in Australia.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Forced to retire from the pool,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02Ben's now desperate to carve out an exciting new life

0:02:02 > 0:02:05in the country that's captured his heart.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08First, though, he'll have to convince wife Katie

0:02:08 > 0:02:10to give up everything she loves in the UK

0:02:10 > 0:02:14to start again in a country she's never even visited

0:02:14 > 0:02:18and he's got just one week to do it.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23The couple's trial week begins with 26 hours on the move

0:02:23 > 0:02:26flying from London to Brisbane via Dubai and Singapore.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29And when they finally touch down in Australia,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32Ben's feeling the effects of the mammoth trip.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35I'm really tired. It's been a while since I've done that journey.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40He may be exhausted, but he's upbeat about being back down under.

0:02:40 > 0:02:41I haven't been here for so long.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43I want to get out, see what it's got to offer.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45I've never been to Brisbane.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48The weather. I'd love to get out in this weather.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Katie, though, has more than the sun on her mind.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54It's a bit of a challenge.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57One, the flight was very long

0:02:57 > 0:03:01and also leaving all my friends and family back home.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04Ben's already got a plan for getting her onside, though.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08I'm looking for Australia to convince Katie rather than me.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11I think I'm going to try and take a back step

0:03:11 > 0:03:14and not be too pushy and just get an honest opinion

0:03:14 > 0:03:15from what you think of it.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Whether that'll work

0:03:18 > 0:03:20and be the springboard to the future he wants

0:03:20 > 0:03:23will be revealed in the next seven days.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31Back in the UK, 28-year-old Ben and 26-year-old Katie Swain

0:03:31 > 0:03:33live in Sutton-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire.

0:03:34 > 0:03:39The couple met in 2005 at a party in Katie's home town in Scotland.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42I was visiting friends and then you also knew the friends

0:03:42 > 0:03:45and then we ended up spending New Year's Eve together.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Yeah, and thought I'd never see him again

0:03:47 > 0:03:49and then, ten years later, we're now married.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51THEY LAUGH

0:03:51 > 0:03:53Ben was passionate about his career,

0:03:53 > 0:03:56representing Great Britain as a professional diver.

0:03:56 > 0:03:57Diving was my life.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00There was nothing else that I did or could do

0:04:00 > 0:04:02cos you're training so much.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04It's intense, there's pressure, there's excitement,

0:04:04 > 0:04:06there's highs and lows,

0:04:06 > 0:04:09so it really consumes you, engulfs you.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Competing all over the world,

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Ben made his Olympic debut in Beijing in 2008

0:04:14 > 0:04:19and won his first international gold medal in Mexico a year later.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22Meanwhile, supportive girlfriend Katie stayed home alone.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25It was very exciting, though,

0:04:25 > 0:04:28cos you get to watch him on TV and compete.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30I remember one competition, when I was sat in bed on my own

0:04:30 > 0:04:33at three o'clock in the morning watching and he won gold.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35I was so excited, I had to phone my brother and be like,

0:04:35 > 0:04:36"Oh, my God! He's won gold!"

0:04:36 > 0:04:39And my brother was like, "Oh, my God, Katie. Get a grip."

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Ben was at the height of his career

0:04:44 > 0:04:47and when London was lined up to host the 2012 Olympic Games,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49he couldn't wait to be part of it.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51But his plans were blown out of the water

0:04:51 > 0:04:54and a crippling knee injury destroyed his career.

0:04:57 > 0:04:58A couple of months later,

0:04:58 > 0:05:01they reconstructed the inside of my knee,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03which resulted in about a year's rehabilitation.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08The day I retired was actually the qualifications

0:05:08 > 0:05:11for the London Olympic diving team.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17It was literally he went from having this amazing career

0:05:17 > 0:05:20that he had a passion for to it being gone.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24With his dream dashed, three years later,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Ben's chasing a new one - moving to Australia,

0:05:27 > 0:05:29a country he first fell for

0:05:29 > 0:05:33while competing in the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Within a week, I was like, "Oh, this is the life. This is brilliant."

0:05:36 > 0:05:38He's always raved about how much he enjoyed it.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Everything about it, he just seemed to love

0:05:40 > 0:05:44and he has never really stopped talking about it since.

0:05:44 > 0:05:49Ben believes Australia's the place to satisfy his thirst for adventure.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50I do like to be active.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53Out in Australia, there's surfing, windsurfing,

0:05:53 > 0:05:55lots of water sport activities.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Along with that, there's a lot of adrenaline in sports.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02I think there's more things in Australia that appeal to me

0:06:02 > 0:06:03that I could be doing

0:06:03 > 0:06:06that I just don't have an opportunity to do here.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09But Katie's not convinced.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Having grown up in Africa, she's moved continents once before

0:06:12 > 0:06:14and the experience has left a scar.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19It was very difficult and it was very hard to fit in

0:06:19 > 0:06:22because I got picked on for being different, I think.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25And that's made me very wary about getting up and leaving again

0:06:25 > 0:06:27because it's taken me a long time

0:06:27 > 0:06:30to have the network of friends that I've got.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34Katie's worked incredibly hard to build her career as a scientist.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Also running a small business

0:06:36 > 0:06:39and with an offer to do a law conversion degree,

0:06:39 > 0:06:40she's got a lot to give up.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45I've got a stable job, we've got a house,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48we've got friends, we've got a good network,

0:06:48 > 0:06:52so for me to kind of have the same enthusiasm as Ben is difficult

0:06:52 > 0:06:56because I've got a lot more to lose than he does.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59Katie's job could be the ticket to a visa for Australia,

0:06:59 > 0:07:01but, as the main breadwinner,

0:07:01 > 0:07:04she's cautious about risking financial stability.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07At the moment, I'm supporting myself and Ben

0:07:07 > 0:07:10and to be over in Australia, to not be able to do that,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13would be far too difficult for me.

0:07:13 > 0:07:18Added to that, there's the emotional cost of leaving her family behind.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22We're all very, very close. My brother's, like, my best friend.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24- We would do anything for each other.- Mm-hm.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27My dad was diagnosed with emphysema,

0:07:27 > 0:07:30- so I think flying halfway round the world...- I don't think...

0:07:30 > 0:07:32..would be too much of a strain for my dad,

0:07:32 > 0:07:36so that will be something I probably find very difficult.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38With one dream already shattered,

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Ben's desperate for Katie to buy into his vision of the couple's future,

0:07:42 > 0:07:46but persuading her could be his toughest challenge yet.

0:07:47 > 0:07:48There is that conflict.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50I do think she'll appreciate it

0:07:50 > 0:07:53and enjoy that kind of lifestyle out there.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55In a way, I don't know if Ben realises

0:07:55 > 0:07:57what a big decision it is.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00I would have to be 100% sure that it would work for us

0:08:00 > 0:08:02before I could make a final decision.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12For their trial week down under, the couple are visiting Brisbane,

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Australia's third most populated city.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Their temporary base is a luxury apartment in Toowong

0:08:19 > 0:08:21on the fringe of the city centre.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23It's Katie's first taste of Aussie living.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30- Oh, this looks nice. - That's all right, isn't it?

0:08:30 > 0:08:32The living space is on the petite side,

0:08:32 > 0:08:34but Ben's quick to find a selling point.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37See, that's what we're missing at our place.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Yeah, OK, I get the point.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- Yeah, it's an awesome spot, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46See, this feels like I'm in open countryside, even though I'm not.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50And I've got a city and everything I need straight around me. Perfect.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53And the pitch continues inside.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56There's not much footage space, is there, compared to our house?

0:08:56 > 0:08:57But it's nice.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02It doesn't take long to check the place out

0:09:02 > 0:09:05and overall, both Ben and Katie seem happy.

0:09:06 > 0:09:11I'd ideally like a three-bedroom, but the actual flat,

0:09:11 > 0:09:13- God, I've seen much worse. - The location...

0:09:13 > 0:09:15- I've seen much worse flats. - Yeah, yeah.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18With that view, I don't think you can really go wrong, can you?

0:09:18 > 0:09:21But it's not long before Katie starts to think about

0:09:21 > 0:09:22what she's left at home.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Moving to Australia has a risk

0:09:25 > 0:09:29of not finding a career that will support us

0:09:29 > 0:09:31or be a stable job for me.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34Ben, meanwhile, has his own concerns.

0:09:34 > 0:09:35I have got high expectations

0:09:35 > 0:09:39and I think I'll be disappointed if it does let me down.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Assuming the country is everything he remembers,

0:09:42 > 0:09:45Ben knows he's still got a battle on his hands

0:09:45 > 0:09:47to persuade Katie to make the move.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51I think the fight will be whether it's just viable

0:09:51 > 0:09:55with missing family and work-wise.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57As long as that's taken care of,

0:09:57 > 0:09:59I think the actual country and the people and the lifestyle

0:09:59 > 0:10:01will be an easy decision.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04It is absolutely beautiful and it's really sunny

0:10:04 > 0:10:06and so far, there's nothing to complain about,

0:10:06 > 0:10:10but like I said, there's a lot of boxes to be ticked.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19Back in the UK, home for Ben and Katie

0:10:19 > 0:10:22is a two-bedroom terraced house in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

0:10:22 > 0:10:28- We paid 104,000 for the house.- Yeah. - And we bought it as a new-build,

0:10:28 > 0:10:30- so we were the first people to be in it.- Yeah.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33But while Ben could pack up and leave it quite easily,

0:10:33 > 0:10:36Katie would find it harder to move on.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40We've worked hard, put a lot of personal time into it

0:10:40 > 0:10:41and it is how we want it,

0:10:41 > 0:10:44so, for me, it would be difficult to give it up.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48If Ben can persuade Katie to buy into his Australian dream,

0:10:48 > 0:10:53their property budget for a new home down under is around £110,000.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55I would quite like something similar to what we've got.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58You know, a bit of space, garden,

0:10:58 > 0:11:01in a nice area where we could feel comfortable and...

0:11:01 > 0:11:03- Something with a...- Socialising.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06I mean, my goal would be to have something like a three-bedroom house

0:11:06 > 0:11:09big enough for a small family, a garage, a big kitchen.

0:11:09 > 0:11:10We wouldn't be able to get that at the start.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12That'd be the end goal. That's what I'd love.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19To find out what kind of house their money could buy in Australia,

0:11:19 > 0:11:21today, we'll show Ben and Katie

0:11:21 > 0:11:23three properties - two on budget

0:11:23 > 0:11:26and a third which could be their dream home.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30After they've seen each one, we'll reveal how much it would cost.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33First stop is Greenslopes, an inner-city suburb

0:11:33 > 0:11:36three miles south of central Brisbane.

0:11:36 > 0:11:37Popular with young professionals,

0:11:37 > 0:11:40it should be somewhere the Swains could blend in,

0:11:40 > 0:11:42but will this one-bedroom apartment measure up?

0:11:46 > 0:11:47In we go.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- So, this is it.- This is nice.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54- It's quite small.- Yeah.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56It is rather compact.

0:11:56 > 0:12:01- Is that the...- Bathroom?- ..bathroom right next to the front door?

0:12:01 > 0:12:04That's a bit unusual, but it's still fit for purpose.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08It's a nice bathroom, though, isn't it?

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Smaller than our bathroom, but nicer than our bathroom.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12- Yeah, but there's no bath. - There is no bath.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15- THEY LAUGH - I don't use the bath anyway.

0:12:15 > 0:12:16No, but I like a bath.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Katie's not convinced

0:12:19 > 0:12:22and Ben soon notices something's amiss in the living room.

0:12:22 > 0:12:23There is no...

0:12:24 > 0:12:25..TV, but I would...

0:12:25 > 0:12:28No, but you wouldn't want to be staring at yourself

0:12:28 > 0:12:29on the sofa, would you, really?

0:12:31 > 0:12:33The nice thing is, you're straight out onto the patio

0:12:33 > 0:12:36and they've got the weather to be able to do that.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38It might be bathed in sunshine,

0:12:38 > 0:12:40but the garden isn't exactly spacious.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43- It's a lot smaller than ours at home.- A lot smaller.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46Well, you've got enough space to have a barbecue.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Ben's determined to push the positive,

0:12:48 > 0:12:51but picking up on its proximity to neighbours,

0:12:51 > 0:12:54even he has to admit it's not quite perfect.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57That's the thing that I'm not so keen on is having...

0:12:57 > 0:13:00- People above?- ..your neighbours directly above your head.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02As in, I could hold their feet if I needed to.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04SHE LAUGHS

0:13:04 > 0:13:06Back inside, the kitchen's a bit cramped.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11I love cooking. I love moving around the kitchen.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14It is very small.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18And the bedroom isn't very big either.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21- I mean, it works. There's only two of us, isn't there?- Mm.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24It's only one bed. There's two of us. It's done...

0:13:24 > 0:13:28Like, there's no doubt about it that it's done nicely. It's enough.

0:13:28 > 0:13:29It's functional.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Ben's not going to be beaten,

0:13:32 > 0:13:35but it'll take more than functional to win Katie over.

0:13:35 > 0:13:39With £110,000 to spend, it's time to find out

0:13:39 > 0:13:43if this house is somewhere the Swains could afford to call home.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52That's way more than I thought it was going to be for this.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Yeah, me too. It's quite expensive

0:13:55 > 0:13:57- compared to what I thought it was going to be.- Yeah.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00But I was kind of thinking that we were going to get less space,

0:14:00 > 0:14:03- but I didn't think it was going to be for more money.- No, I didn't.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06I thought, for the same money, we'd probably get less space.

0:14:06 > 0:14:07I didn't think it would cost us more.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10I don't think we'd be able to afford that anyway.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12- That does shock me. - Yeah, it shocks me a little bit.

0:14:12 > 0:14:13That really does shock me.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16Yeah, I think we've got some more to see.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20- But, at the minute, we wouldn't be able to afford to move here.- No.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24The realisation they'd be paying more for less has been an eye-opener

0:14:24 > 0:14:28and with Katie already questioning the affordability of a move,

0:14:28 > 0:14:31Ben needs the next property to be much more promising.

0:14:31 > 0:14:36The couple head 40 minutes west of Brisbane to the city of Ipswich.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39Offering a cosmopolitan mix of shops and restaurants,

0:14:39 > 0:14:41the area has plenty of appeal

0:14:41 > 0:14:44and being further out could mean better value for money.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47But will this two-bedroom house just off a main road

0:14:47 > 0:14:49be somewhere Katie could call home?

0:14:52 > 0:14:57- This is the...- Spare bedroom. - ..spare bedroom.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59- That's quite cute.- Yeah, it's nice. - Little window colours.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01There's certainly more space

0:15:01 > 0:15:03and the master bedroom's a hit with Ben.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06I could see myself sleeping and living here.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09But the big question is can Katie?

0:15:10 > 0:15:14- Yeah, it depends on how noisy the main road is, though.- Yeah.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17Hmm. Next up, the bathroom.

0:15:17 > 0:15:18This is nice.

0:15:18 > 0:15:22- It looks like a holiday theme, doesn't it?- A holiday theme?- Yeah.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25- What do you mean?- It's got stars and shells and stuff all round it.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27- I quite like it. - THEY LAUGH

0:15:27 > 0:15:31OK, moving on, the open-plan living area is a hit

0:15:31 > 0:15:33with both Ben and Katie.

0:15:33 > 0:15:37- Wow.- This is cool. - This is better, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39- It's massive.- It is really big.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43The modern interiors are winning Katie round.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47- It's really nice.- And this... - I'd be happy living here.- Yeah.

0:15:48 > 0:15:49That's a result.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53When Ben spots the spacious kitchen, he's happy too.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57- Finally, a big kitchen. This is...- This is really nice.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59- I like the colour of it.- Yeah.

0:15:59 > 0:16:00Easily double the size of mine

0:16:00 > 0:16:03and it's all nice and open-plan, which is quite nice.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05Yeah, I really, really like this.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09Outdoors is much more spacious than the last property.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13- Wow. This is amazing. - Wow.- Garden's massive.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17- That's bigger than our whole entire property to just the garden.- Yeah.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19You've got so much room to do all sorts of stuff.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21You could have decking, barbecue area, a patio.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23I could do my patio again.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26Ben could be getting carried away,

0:16:26 > 0:16:28but Katie doesn't share his excitement.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32- I'm not sure...- Ideal.- ..it would be fun maintaining this, though.

0:16:32 > 0:16:33We'd have to do something with it.

0:16:35 > 0:16:36She's playing it cool,

0:16:36 > 0:16:39but this house has been more of a hit than the last one.

0:16:39 > 0:16:43But with £110,000 to spend, will it be within reach?

0:16:49 > 0:16:51How much do you think this is worth?

0:16:51 > 0:16:55In pounds, I'd probably say between 150 and 200,000, maybe.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57I was thinking along the lines of £200,000.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00I hope this is in our budget cos I'd love to be able to afford it.

0:17:00 > 0:17:01I'd love to be able to afford it too.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04I can't see it being, but fingers crossed.

0:17:08 > 0:17:13No way. I think that's incredible for this.

0:17:13 > 0:17:17It's £20,000 over budget, but Ben doesn't seem daunted.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19That fills me with hope.

0:17:19 > 0:17:24But it's still expensive and it's still out of our budget.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26Depending on their earnings down under,

0:17:26 > 0:17:28this home could still be within reach,

0:17:28 > 0:17:32though the cost of Brisbane housing is seeing Katie struggle.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42Hopefully, the final property of the day will get her more excited.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45Katie's keen to live somewhere that lends itself to socialising,

0:17:45 > 0:17:48so we found what could be the couple's dream space -

0:17:48 > 0:17:51smack bang in the centre of Brisbane.

0:17:52 > 0:17:53Will it be a winner?

0:17:59 > 0:18:03- Ooh, it's cute. - This is different, isn't it?

0:18:03 > 0:18:06- Is that good or bad, Ben? - I really like it.

0:18:06 > 0:18:10By far, it's the nicest decorated than anything we've seen.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13It also offers the open-plan layout the couple like,

0:18:13 > 0:18:16but once more, it's not big on space.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19- The living area is...- It's quite... - ..again, quite small, isn't it?

0:18:19 > 0:18:21- Yeah, it's quite small. - But at least it's...

0:18:21 > 0:18:24It looks like it's had quite a lot of work done to it, though.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26Trying to stay positive,

0:18:26 > 0:18:29Ben points out it could be a good starting point for the pair.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32I think I'd... If I had to,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35I'd rent something like this for a time to live in.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37Rather than investing.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40Yeah, and then use this as somewhere really, really nice

0:18:40 > 0:18:44- to look for somewhere to buy.- Yeah.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49Katie not sounding sold, Ben moves his sales pitch outside.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51- HE LAUGHS - So, there you go.

0:18:51 > 0:18:52You have got a bit of garden.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54You've got the grass out here and a barbecue,

0:18:54 > 0:18:56which is typical Australian.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59You wouldn't be in Australia without a barbecue, so that's nice.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03He's trying hard, but Katie's proving a tough audience.

0:19:05 > 0:19:06It's quite a nice view,

0:19:06 > 0:19:09but I'd be worried about the shops and...

0:19:09 > 0:19:11- Everything down there. - ..restaurants downstairs.

0:19:11 > 0:19:16And indoors, Ben reluctantly agrees the bathroom could be an issue too.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19You'll fit in the bath, but I'm not sure...

0:19:19 > 0:19:22- Am I too tall? - Don't leave dirty footprints.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25- Yeah, see, that's... - HE LAUGHS

0:19:25 > 0:19:28- Maybe a little bit of an issue.- Yeah.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30- Oh, you've left muddy footprints. - Oh, sorry.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32You're going to have to clean that before we leave.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35Before he cleans up, the couple check out the bedroom.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41- That's nice. - This is cute. I like this.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44They've got an in-built wardrobe, which is good.

0:19:44 > 0:19:45They've used the space effectively.

0:19:45 > 0:19:49Hopefully, with having all the bars and pubs and restaurants,

0:19:49 > 0:19:51if these windows are nice and sealed,

0:19:51 > 0:19:52sleeping wouldn't be an issue.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55I don't think I'm sold on that theory. Sorry.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59He's tried his hardest,

0:19:59 > 0:20:01but it doesn't look like this is the house

0:20:01 > 0:20:03to convince Katie to make the movie either.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06With £110,000 to spend,

0:20:06 > 0:20:09would their budget even extend to somewhere like this?

0:20:10 > 0:20:13- Shall we see how much it's worth? - Go on, then.- Are you ready?- Yeah.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20- Ah. That's quite expensive. - HE EXHALES

0:20:20 > 0:20:25It... Yeah, that's way out of our budget for that and...

0:20:25 > 0:20:27- HE EXHALES - In a way, I kind of

0:20:27 > 0:20:29almost expected it to be that expensive

0:20:29 > 0:20:32with how close it is to the centre of Brisbane.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34But, still, for this size...

0:20:34 > 0:20:37- For that amount of money, I'd want a lot more.- Yeah.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39- That's ridiculously expensive.- Yeah.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42The reality of Brisbane property prices

0:20:42 > 0:20:44has provided plenty of food for thought

0:20:44 > 0:20:46and confirmed Ben's fear

0:20:46 > 0:20:49that the three-bedroom house with a garage is a long way off.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53Property one was too small in every way

0:20:53 > 0:20:56apart from the asking price.

0:20:56 > 0:21:00Property two was more spacious and closer to their budget,

0:21:00 > 0:21:02but it still left Katie unimpressed.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05And despite a social scene

0:21:05 > 0:21:06on the doorstep,

0:21:06 > 0:21:09the final property of the day left Katie cold.

0:21:10 > 0:21:14So, how will discovering they might struggle on their budget

0:21:14 > 0:21:15affect Ben and Katie's choice

0:21:15 > 0:21:20when it comes to choosing between homes in Australia and the UK?

0:21:20 > 0:21:22- They've all been quite different, haven't they?- Yeah.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25I think it's given an idea of what is out there

0:21:25 > 0:21:28and it's kind of given an idea of what I would like

0:21:28 > 0:21:32- and the prices to expect. - Yeah. I think, um...

0:21:34 > 0:21:36Well, I don't know. It's quite a difficult decision for me.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38Time to vote.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53- Have you gone for GB?- Yeah. - HE LAUGHS

0:21:53 > 0:21:56- I thought you were going to go for Australia.- Really?- Yeah.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58I don't know. I think it's just the fact

0:21:58 > 0:22:01that it's quite unpredictable about what we could afford.

0:22:01 > 0:22:05I think, from what I've seen today, I can see potential

0:22:05 > 0:22:08and I think, with enough research, we can actually find something

0:22:08 > 0:22:11that will look really quite good, be quite spacious,

0:22:11 > 0:22:14that would give us an opportunity to develop.

0:22:14 > 0:22:15That's what I liked about it.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18I just think there was more negatives to positives.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21- I think the one house, I would buy in a second...- Yeah.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24..whereas the other two kind of made me a bit more reserved

0:22:24 > 0:22:25- on my decision.- Yeah.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33With Katie disheartened by property prices,

0:22:33 > 0:22:35Ben's chances of convincing her to move

0:22:35 > 0:22:37could already be in deep water.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40Finding jobs that could keep them financially afloat

0:22:40 > 0:22:43will be crucial if he's to keep his dream alive.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49In the UK, former athlete Ben works as a diving coach

0:22:49 > 0:22:52and a sports massage therapist.

0:22:52 > 0:22:53They're very different.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55It's nice to have both to give me some change.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58Having achieved the career of her dreams,

0:22:58 > 0:23:01Katie works full-time as an analytical scientist

0:23:01 > 0:23:03in a honey testing lab

0:23:03 > 0:23:07and runs her own business hosting science parties for children.

0:23:09 > 0:23:10It's really fascinating.

0:23:10 > 0:23:14There are so many different areas, different aspects you can get into.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17There's research. There's working in commercial labs.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21If they do make the move, Ben hopes to retrain as a paramedic

0:23:21 > 0:23:24and although it would affect his short-term earning potential,

0:23:24 > 0:23:27he's confident it's a risk worth taking.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Hopefully, from sort of the things that I understand,

0:23:30 > 0:23:32it can pay off in later years

0:23:32 > 0:23:34and hopefully, put us in a better position than now.

0:23:36 > 0:23:37But as the main breadwinner,

0:23:37 > 0:23:41convincing Katie to walk away from the job she loves won't be easy.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43It'd be very difficult for me

0:23:43 > 0:23:46because I'm leaving the stable job and that's a massive risk for me

0:23:46 > 0:23:48and I've worked hard to be in the position that I'm in.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53Ben's hopes for a new life down under

0:23:53 > 0:23:55could live or die on what the couple discover

0:23:55 > 0:23:58in their day exploring work options.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03First up, Katie heads off to meet David Waltisbuhl

0:24:03 > 0:24:06from Queensland's Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13Now we'll come into the main lab area.

0:24:13 > 0:24:14How big is the lab?

0:24:14 > 0:24:16Like, do you have quite a lot of analysts or...?

0:24:16 > 0:24:20We've got seven analysts working in our laboratory.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23After a quick tour, Katie is keen to get down to business.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25If I was to come over to Australia,

0:24:25 > 0:24:30what would my kind of job prospects be to work for a company like this?

0:24:30 > 0:24:32I would be looking to recruit somebody

0:24:32 > 0:24:35- only if one of the existing staff left.- OK.

0:24:35 > 0:24:40Probably every three or four years we might have a staff change.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Opportunities at this lab may be thin on the ground,

0:24:43 > 0:24:48but David is quick to assure her work could be easier to find elsewhere.

0:24:48 > 0:24:50Certainly in some bigger laboratories around

0:24:50 > 0:24:51that do similar work to ours.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53- OK.- So they would be hiring more staff.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57Most of the stuff they hire are at the technician level.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00- I think you'd be looking more for a professional position.- OK.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03That's more reassuring.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05Meanwhile, Ben meets Sean Mutchmor

0:25:05 > 0:25:07at the Queensland Ambulance emergency complex

0:25:07 > 0:25:10to find out if his ideal career is a real option.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14These ones here have everything from these fast response units

0:25:14 > 0:25:16for our critical care paramedics.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20It's an impressive set-up and Ben is keen to hear

0:25:20 > 0:25:22how he can become part of it.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24So, I've had a look at what I need to do to become

0:25:24 > 0:25:26a paramedic in the UK.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29What qualifications could I get in the UK,

0:25:29 > 0:25:31or what would I need here to become a paramedic?

0:25:31 > 0:25:33Well, there's two options.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36You can get credentials in the UK and then come over.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39We have a process here where we recognise, you know, prior learning

0:25:39 > 0:25:42- and equivalent qualifications from other countries and states.- OK.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44You can go through a process that way.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46Or secondarily, you can come to Australia

0:25:46 > 0:25:49- and do your undergraduate education here.- OK.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Currently, our baseline entry programme is a three-year

0:25:52 > 0:25:54- bachelor's degree for the advanced care paramedic II level.- Yep.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56Then subsequent to that,

0:25:56 > 0:25:58if you want to go on to become a critical care paramedic,

0:25:58 > 0:26:00it's either a graduate diploma or a master's degree.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03That doesn't sound too dissimilar.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07Ben would hope to study in Australia. But funding could be a problem.

0:26:07 > 0:26:12The NHS for paramedics at university will pay for the course.

0:26:12 > 0:26:13Is that similar out here?

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Realistically,

0:26:15 > 0:26:17your undergraduate programme is only funded by yourself.

0:26:17 > 0:26:18Of course, here in Australia,

0:26:18 > 0:26:21there's a number of government-funded systems that

0:26:21 > 0:26:24help you pay for that, but as far as the ambulance service goes, no.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27It's not the answer Ben wanted.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30But Sean does add that he could qualify for a study grant.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32Even so, the reality is

0:26:32 > 0:26:36studying full-time would put more financial pressure on Katie.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39So, assuming she could find a job, the big question is,

0:26:39 > 0:26:41how much would it pay?

0:26:41 > 0:26:44The salary we'd be looking at paying

0:26:44 > 0:26:50someone of your qualifications would be around 75,000-80,000 a year.

0:26:51 > 0:26:57Almost £38,000 is nearly double what Katie earns in the UK.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00All in all, it's been a positive meeting.

0:27:02 > 0:27:07Knowing that I wouldn't come in at a bottom level is really good.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10And the salary would be amazing cos it's a lot higher

0:27:10 > 0:27:12than what the UK offer.

0:27:13 > 0:27:17Ben's chances of persuading Katie to make the move could be on the up,

0:27:17 > 0:27:21especially if, once qualified, his salary improves too.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25So, what's the actual pay like then?

0:27:25 > 0:27:27Like I said, you know, there's a number of options.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30But, baseline, say you're going to work in Brisbane,

0:27:30 > 0:27:32an average paramedic working on an ambulance like this,

0:27:32 > 0:27:35your baseline page might be, say, around 65,000.

0:27:35 > 0:27:39That's a starting salary of nearly £33,000 before shift rates

0:27:39 > 0:27:42and other allowances are added on.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45It's been a pretty good day for the Swains at work, but how will

0:27:45 > 0:27:49the findings impact on their decision between work in Australia and the UK?

0:28:02 > 0:28:05- What did you go for?- Australia! - Australia!- Yay!

0:28:05 > 0:28:07- Why did you go for Australia?- Erm...

0:28:07 > 0:28:09I really like the people I've met out here.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11It actually sounds really exciting.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13- Cool.- You?

0:28:13 > 0:28:16I think knowing that I can transfer my skills over here and do

0:28:16 > 0:28:18what I do back home.

0:28:18 > 0:28:22And also there are jobs out here that I'd be able do.

0:28:22 > 0:28:25And I think the pay would be more beneficial,

0:28:25 > 0:28:27as it's a lot more than what the UK offer.

0:28:27 > 0:28:30- Excellent.- Cool.- So, we are in agreement.- Woohoo!

0:28:30 > 0:28:31Let's go.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40A day discovering work opportunities in Brisbane

0:28:40 > 0:28:43may have put Katie's career concerns to rest.

0:28:43 > 0:28:45Her first vote for Australia

0:28:45 > 0:28:49could mean the tide's beginning to turn in Ben's favour.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51With Katie a fitness fanatic,

0:28:51 > 0:28:54will a day experiencing the active outdoor lifestyle

0:28:54 > 0:28:57Australia is famed for prove another winner?

0:29:00 > 0:29:02Making the most of Brisbane's warm climate,

0:29:02 > 0:29:04the couple head for the Gold Coast

0:29:04 > 0:29:06to try their hand at paddleboarding -

0:29:06 > 0:29:09one of the country's most popular pastimes.

0:29:09 > 0:29:11It's super easy to do. Super fun.

0:29:11 > 0:29:13So, we're going to test your balance out and they're going to get

0:29:13 > 0:29:16you to stand up on the board, use the paddle and paddle around.

0:29:16 > 0:29:19Their instructor is Australian paddleboarding champion

0:29:19 > 0:29:21Angela Jackson.

0:29:21 > 0:29:24No pressure, we've got a world champion teaching us.

0:29:24 > 0:29:26THEY LAUGH

0:29:28 > 0:29:31Ben's competitive spirit rises to the surface

0:29:31 > 0:29:34and after a quick lesson, they are ready to get going.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41Normally at home in the water, Ben is soon making a splash.

0:29:59 > 0:30:02Abandoning their boards, the pair head for an alfresco lunch

0:30:02 > 0:30:04at the nearby Currumbin estuary,

0:30:04 > 0:30:07where the scenery soon works its magic on Katie.

0:30:08 > 0:30:13It's beautiful. Can't beat the sunshine. Got the water.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16- I'm loving it here.- Yeah, it's really nice. It's really pretty.

0:30:16 > 0:30:18And I'd really like to try that someday.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21Kitesurfing.

0:30:21 > 0:30:23Probably better at that than what you were this morning.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25I think I'd be awesome at that.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30It's exactly the kind of life Ben dreams of.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33Keen to gauge his chances of securing it,

0:30:33 > 0:30:36he susses out Katie's feelings about being so far from home.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39- Do you miss your family?- Eh...

0:30:39 > 0:30:42I don't really feel like I'm on the other side of the world from them.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45I think if I wanted to go and visit, I think it'd be a different story

0:30:45 > 0:30:48cos obviously it's not just a drive up the road,

0:30:48 > 0:30:50it's fly miles.

0:30:50 > 0:30:53Katie may not be homesick yet,

0:30:53 > 0:30:57but that could be a real issue if she was here for the long haul.

0:30:57 > 0:30:59The couple round of their day with a dip

0:30:59 > 0:31:02in Currumbin's natural rock pools.

0:31:02 > 0:31:05The day's definitely lived up to Ben's expectations.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08I've had a really exciting day today.

0:31:08 > 0:31:12I've seen a lot of Australia, the kind of Australia that I remember

0:31:12 > 0:31:15and the reason why I thought I'd quite like to emigrate out here.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19And after her day in the sunshine,

0:31:19 > 0:31:22the benefits of Aussie living could be dawning on Katie too.

0:31:22 > 0:31:26It's shown me that there's lots to do.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28I don't think I'll ever get bored.

0:31:28 > 0:31:31You can be outside all day.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33The weather is lovely.

0:31:33 > 0:31:37Yeah, I just think the whole vibe of it is pretty cool.

0:31:37 > 0:31:38So will she have been convinced

0:31:38 > 0:31:43when it comes to picking between the lifestyle in Australia and the UK?

0:31:44 > 0:31:46- Shall we, babe?- I think so. - Let's go.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55- What are you going for?- Australia. That was an easy one for me.- Yeah.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57- For me too.- Was it?- Yeah.- Excellent.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00It was really good today and I think it gave a really good

0:32:00 > 0:32:03- view of what would be available, so...- Yeah.- Yeah, really happy.

0:32:03 > 0:32:05Much better experience than the outdoor stuff we ever

0:32:05 > 0:32:08- get to do in England. - Yep. Definitely.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11- Excellent.- Cool. - Shall we go?- Let's go.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21Australia's lifestyle may have won Katie round,

0:32:21 > 0:32:25but Ben knows keeping her on side will be a challenge

0:32:25 > 0:32:27if the move would leave them out of pocket.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31If they do decide to emigrate, the couple would need to

0:32:31 > 0:32:34sell their house in the UK to help fund the move.

0:32:34 > 0:32:38They purchased it three years ago for around £104,000.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43We sent round two estate agents to get up-to-date valuations.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48First thing I noticed about this property is

0:32:48 > 0:32:52the quality of the oak flooring. Very contemporary feel about it.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55It's a nice, spacious lounge.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58I'd say it's a tad dark.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02They may need to sort of brighten it up with the light.

0:33:02 > 0:33:03Get rid of the dark lampshade.

0:33:05 > 0:33:09It's a nice rear enclosed garden. Ideal for some entertaining.

0:33:09 > 0:33:11It's a good selling point of the house.

0:33:13 > 0:33:14Snookers.

0:33:17 > 0:33:20I'm impressed with the number of units in this kitchen.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22There are a lot of utensils out on the benches.

0:33:22 > 0:33:24Perhaps some of those could be put away

0:33:24 > 0:33:27if the property were to be marketed for sale.

0:33:27 > 0:33:29That's a fair point, but I do live in that kitchen.

0:33:29 > 0:33:31In the current marketplace,

0:33:31 > 0:33:35I would value this property between £105,000

0:33:35 > 0:33:39and £110,000.

0:33:39 > 0:33:41For a quick sale, the property

0:33:41 > 0:33:44could be marketed for £100,000.

0:33:44 > 0:33:51The rental per calendar month would be £475 a month.

0:33:52 > 0:33:57I'd recommend a current asking price between £100,000 and £105,000.

0:33:57 > 0:34:01For a more quick sale, I'd be looking at a figure of £95,000.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04The rental market remains very strong locally,

0:34:04 > 0:34:09and my figure for rental purposes would be £495 per calendar month,

0:34:09 > 0:34:13perhaps dropping to £475 if required.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16- I thought we would have got more than what we paid.- Yeah.

0:34:16 > 0:34:19But I think I'd prefer to rent it.

0:34:19 > 0:34:21I would. I'd keep it anyway.

0:34:21 > 0:34:22- I don't think I'd sell it.- Yeah.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25With the value of their house lower than expected,

0:34:25 > 0:34:29Ben knows what happens next could make or break his dream.

0:34:29 > 0:34:33Anxious to keep Katie on side, the couple sit down to figure out

0:34:33 > 0:34:38living costs in Australia, starting with their weekly food shop.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42So, you've got eggs which are 1.6.

0:34:42 > 0:34:46- That's 1.6.- Mixed peppers.- Yeah.

0:34:46 > 0:34:473.08.

0:34:48 > 0:34:53- That's expensive. 3.08. Yeah. - Apples.- Yeah.- 0.75.

0:34:54 > 0:34:56It's not looking good so far.

0:34:56 > 0:35:01The couple work out they would be spending over £99 on food every week.

0:35:01 > 0:35:06That particular shop is £25 extra.

0:35:06 > 0:35:08That's £100 more per month.

0:35:08 > 0:35:12And they've still to examine their bigger bills.

0:35:12 > 0:35:13Why are you stressing?

0:35:13 > 0:35:16- HE CHUCKLES - Lots of numbers. Ready?

0:35:16 > 0:35:17- OK.- Let's do the other load.

0:35:19 > 0:35:22Basing their sums on the second property they viewed

0:35:22 > 0:35:25adds an instant £270 to mortgage costs.

0:35:25 > 0:35:29That's the biggest... I think that's the biggest expense.

0:35:29 > 0:35:33- Electricity and water is going to be a little bit more expensive.- Yeah.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36But then everything else works out.

0:35:36 > 0:35:40Overall, the couple would be spending around £250 a month

0:35:40 > 0:35:43more down under, and Ben is feeling the pressure.

0:35:43 > 0:35:45I'm sweating doing this.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50Salaries could help make up the shortfall, though.

0:35:50 > 0:35:53When the couple add up Katie's increased wages down under

0:35:53 > 0:35:56with Ben's study allowance and income from part-time sports massage,

0:35:56 > 0:35:59the figures look more promising.

0:35:59 > 0:36:03So, would the Swains be losing out or potentially living it up

0:36:03 > 0:36:05if they were to go ahead with the move?

0:36:06 > 0:36:10So, looking at these former numbers from how much we've got left

0:36:10 > 0:36:14over at the end of the month at home, we'd be laughing in Australia.

0:36:14 > 0:36:16We've got, instead of £100 or £200,

0:36:16 > 0:36:19we've now got £900 to £1,000 extra to play with a month.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22- So, that's good news for me. - LAUGHING:- Yeah.

0:36:22 > 0:36:23Yeah, I know.

0:36:23 > 0:36:27- That makes it... That makes me really happy.- Aw.

0:36:27 > 0:36:28After a shaky start,

0:36:28 > 0:36:32it's clear moving could substantially improve the Swains' bank balance.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35So, is it a clean sweep for the country

0:36:35 > 0:36:39when deciding between finances in Australia and the UK?

0:36:50 > 0:36:52Yeah! Australia.

0:36:52 > 0:36:53Why did you pick Australia?

0:36:53 > 0:36:55Because it looks like we're going to earn more money.

0:36:55 > 0:36:58- THEY LAUGH - Is that it?- No.

0:36:58 > 0:37:00It looks like we'd get a better lifestyle, I think,

0:37:00 > 0:37:06and if we can be better off, even if I decide to go to university,

0:37:06 > 0:37:10after I'm qualified, hopefully we'd be even better off again.

0:37:10 > 0:37:11And for you, was it an easy choice?

0:37:11 > 0:37:13Erm, I think it just kind of gave me

0:37:13 > 0:37:15- an idea that I wouldn't need to worry.- Yeah.

0:37:15 > 0:37:18Whereas in the UK, I'd still feel like we worry about money

0:37:18 > 0:37:21- quite a bit.- Yeah.- So...

0:37:21 > 0:37:23- It's positive.- Excellent.

0:37:24 > 0:37:27With her financial worries laid to rest,

0:37:27 > 0:37:30Katie could be on the way to following Ben's dream.

0:37:30 > 0:37:33But, as they sit down to watch messages from home,

0:37:33 > 0:37:37Ben knows he could be treading water if Katie can't reconcile herself

0:37:37 > 0:37:40with the idea of leaving close-knit family.

0:37:41 > 0:37:44- Hey, guys.- Hey, guys. Hope you're having a great time in Australia.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47Hi, Ben and Katie. I hope you've had a superb week in Australia.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50Hi, Katie. Hi, Ben. How are you doing?

0:37:50 > 0:37:52I hope everything is going well for you

0:37:52 > 0:37:54and no doubt we'll hear from you soon.

0:37:54 > 0:37:57They're just a really nice couple. Just get on really well.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59Katie's a...

0:37:59 > 0:38:02We always called her our wee little feisty Scots girl.

0:38:03 > 0:38:05She's lovely. She's really lovely. She's gorgeous.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07She's got a lovely sense of humour.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11She's grown into the most amazing daughter. She means the world to me.

0:38:13 > 0:38:15But I know she is in good hands with Ben.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17Ben is a super guy.

0:38:17 > 0:38:22I couldn't ask for anyone nicer to be with my daughter.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25I don't want Ben to go, but I would be gutted

0:38:25 > 0:38:29if Ben moved to Australia, but I can't stop him, so...

0:38:29 > 0:38:33Yes, we are very proud of him for what he achieved,

0:38:33 > 0:38:36but I think more than that, for who he is.

0:38:36 > 0:38:37Yeah.

0:38:40 > 0:38:41His personality, particularly.

0:38:47 > 0:38:49I'll miss them very, very much.

0:38:50 > 0:38:53As I say, my daughter is very caring and she worries an awful lot

0:38:53 > 0:38:56about me, which is very touching, very nice.

0:38:56 > 0:38:57I will miss her contact.

0:38:57 > 0:39:00It is going to be very hard.

0:39:00 > 0:39:03We'll just have to make sure her and Ben build me a granny flat.

0:39:05 > 0:39:08It's the beginning of their life as, you know,

0:39:08 > 0:39:13a married couple together and their future and I think it's, you know...

0:39:13 > 0:39:16If that's what they want, then they go with our blessing, really.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18- Absolutely.- Mm-hm.

0:39:18 > 0:39:22We are here for you. We're only a phone call away.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25Stay safe and we're going to miss you.

0:39:25 > 0:39:30Katie and Ben, I am going to miss you so much.

0:39:30 > 0:39:35But I honestly think that you and Ben will excel over there.

0:39:35 > 0:39:37And one last thing, Katie.

0:39:37 > 0:39:41As far as health goes, don't let it impact on your decision.

0:39:41 > 0:39:42My health is going to be fine.

0:39:43 > 0:39:45Whatever you do, um...

0:39:47 > 0:39:48We'll support you.

0:39:50 > 0:39:52SHE SNIFFS

0:39:54 > 0:39:57Whatever you do, you know we love you.

0:40:02 > 0:40:03Bless them.

0:40:03 > 0:40:05I was shocked that my parents got so emotional.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07I think the biggest thing for me,

0:40:07 > 0:40:10I guess, watching the video was kind of my dad's health.

0:40:10 > 0:40:14I know he says he's OK, but they're there to...

0:40:14 > 0:40:17Well, and your family are there to support us.

0:40:18 > 0:40:20Encouraging messages from home

0:40:20 > 0:40:24may have lessened the emotional impact of emigrating for Katie,

0:40:24 > 0:40:28but with the heartache it could cause his family and friends

0:40:28 > 0:40:31now dawning on him, Ben has been shaken.

0:40:31 > 0:40:33It's been his dream all along,

0:40:33 > 0:40:37but will coming to terms with leaving loved ones mean

0:40:37 > 0:40:40it's now Ben who's beginning to question the move?

0:40:42 > 0:40:44For him, the couple's time in Brisbane has been

0:40:44 > 0:40:47a reminder of why he's been pushing for the move.

0:40:49 > 0:40:54Having the beach, having the scenery, going down to the creek.

0:40:55 > 0:40:57That brought back all the memories that I had before,

0:40:57 > 0:40:59years ago, since 2006

0:40:59 > 0:41:02that made me want to emigrate to Australia in the first place.

0:41:03 > 0:41:06Katie's seen her money concerns evaporate.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09I was really worried that financially

0:41:09 > 0:41:11we wouldn't be able to cope in Australia,

0:41:11 > 0:41:14and I think knowing that there's such a big difference

0:41:14 > 0:41:18of the finances in Australia to the UK...

0:41:18 > 0:41:21I mean, £900 difference is incredible.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24I'll never see that in the UK, I don't think.

0:41:24 > 0:41:27And being reassured about leaving family behind.

0:41:27 > 0:41:30It was really nice to see how supportive my family were and

0:41:30 > 0:41:35how my parents and my dad made sure that I wasn't worried about him.

0:41:36 > 0:41:39But Ben may be wrestling with conflicting emotions.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41I think I know which way I'm going to vote,

0:41:41 > 0:41:44although after watching my friends and family video,

0:41:44 > 0:41:46it's not going to make that as obvious for me now.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49I was really surprised that my dad choked up like he did.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52That really came as a shock to me to see that reaction.

0:41:52 > 0:41:56It's such a big thing and it is like starting all over again.

0:41:56 > 0:42:01And the worries that I do have are still there a little bit.

0:42:01 > 0:42:03But from what I've seen this week,

0:42:03 > 0:42:05there's more positives than negatives.

0:42:06 > 0:42:08As the sun sets on their week,

0:42:08 > 0:42:12has Katie seen enough to completely sign up to the move?

0:42:12 > 0:42:15And will Ben decide leaving loved ones is a price worth paying

0:42:15 > 0:42:17to follow his dream?

0:42:25 > 0:42:29- Yay! You're up for Australia? - Yeah.- Are you sure?- Yeah.- Good.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31What was the biggest thing that decided it?

0:42:31 > 0:42:34- I think the reality check today... - Yeah?

0:42:34 > 0:42:36- ..played a massive part in my decision.- Yeah.

0:42:36 > 0:42:40I still have a few negatives,

0:42:40 > 0:42:43but from my experience, it's all been pretty positive.

0:42:43 > 0:42:46I think what I've learnt is there is a lot of research we need
