0:00:31 > 0:00:35The only thing that is stopping us is me.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54or decide there's no place like home?

0:00:54 > 0:00:57That was just as hard...as I thought it was going to be.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Covering a landmass of almost 3 million square miles,

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Australia's been hailed a land of opportunity

0:01:28 > 0:01:32ever since the first European settlers arrived back in the 1700s.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36Promising sunshine, beaches and a strong economy,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39the attraction shows little sign of easing up, with latest figures

0:01:39 > 0:01:44showing over 28% of the country's population was born overseas.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Julie Rutland is on a mission to convince husband Dan

0:01:49 > 0:01:52the country's where their family belongs.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Never having set foot in Australia before, however,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58he has a long list of concerns,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01and worries his wife's vision of life down under

0:02:01 > 0:02:04is based entirely on rose-tinted memories.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07The next week is Julie's only hope to persuade him,

0:02:07 > 0:02:11once and for all, her dream's one worth chasing.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15The week begins with over 17 hours in the sky,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18flying from London to Australia via Dubai.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22And when they finally land in Perth,

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Julie admits she's thrilled to be back down under.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28I thought I was going to go pop.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32I just can't wait to show them all the beach, the weather,

0:02:32 > 0:02:33the lifestyle and the houses,

0:02:33 > 0:02:35and I think they're all really excited to see it.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38We want to see the new house!

0:02:38 > 0:02:39But after the epic journey,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43there's only one word to some up how Dan's feeling.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Tired. I'm feeling very, very tired. It was a long journey.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Willow agrees.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51I'm tired because I didn't get any sleep.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54But nothing's going to dent Julie's enthusiasm.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56It wasn't that bad!

0:02:56 > 0:02:59I had all three children and you were happily sat there.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02- How many films did you get to watch? - SHE LAUGHS

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Now she's finally got them here, Julie will need to try harder

0:03:05 > 0:03:08if she's to convince Dan to start a new life

0:03:08 > 0:03:09on the other side of the world.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Meet the Rutlands, from Bicester in Oxfordshire.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17They're dad, Dan,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19mum Julie, nine-year-old Zack,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22six-year-old Willow and five-year-old Faye.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25On the whole, life's good,

0:03:25 > 0:03:30but Julie's still reminiscing about time spent in Australia 15 years ago.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32It's got so many wonderful memories.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34I was travelling with two of my best friends.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36We were young, we bought a camper van in Darwin

0:03:36 > 0:03:38and we travelled all round Australia,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41and then we settled in Bondi,

0:03:41 > 0:03:44and you know, we lived a few roads back from Bondi Beach,

0:03:44 > 0:03:46which was just beautiful.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50Julie reluctantly returned to the UK to go to university,

0:03:50 > 0:03:51and met Dan soon after.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56I swerved into a nightclub, swooped Julie off of her feet

0:03:56 > 0:03:59and that was the end of the story.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03Julie's version of it is probably a little bit different.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Dan's charm soon bowled Julie over,

0:04:05 > 0:04:10and when she secured a job in Formula One, the couple moved to Bicester.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12Since becoming parents, Julie's parked her career

0:04:12 > 0:04:15and Dan works as a carpenter.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17But with her previous experience down under,

0:04:17 > 0:04:21Julie dreams of a better life in Australia.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23It's just about the lifestyle, really.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Go, go. Oh, be careful there, Willow!

0:04:25 > 0:04:29I would just love to live by a beach, a beautiful, sandy beach.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31I just want the children to be able to go for walks,

0:04:31 > 0:04:33and I love the sporty lifestyle.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35We're such an outdoors family.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Moving to the other side of the world

0:04:38 > 0:04:40wasn't something Dan had ever considered.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42I think the way you brought it up was,

0:04:42 > 0:04:45- "Why don't we move to Australia?" - LAUGHING:- Probably.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Danny got home from work, and I said to him, "I've had a great idea",

0:04:49 > 0:04:52and he looks at me and rolls his eyes and says,

0:04:52 > 0:04:54"Oh, no, not another one."

0:04:54 > 0:04:57But Julie's determined to make her husband take her seriously,

0:04:57 > 0:05:00and has even secured a visa for the family to emigrate.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02The children are on board.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05All she needs to do now is convince Dan it's the right move.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12The only thing that is stopping us is me.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14Erm, I am the brick wall.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16Desperate to demolish Dan's doubts,

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Julie's applied for jobs for him online,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20and knowing how much he loves fishing,

0:05:20 > 0:05:24she's even tried to reel him in with the promise of a boat.

0:05:24 > 0:05:25JULIE LAUGHS

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Just a little bit, mate. It was just a splash.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Yeah, I might have hinted that he could have a little boat,

0:05:30 > 0:05:34just a little boat, if he moved near the sea.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36But Dan's not rising to the bait.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41I just wonder whether she's looking through rose-tinted glasses.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45Can we afford to move to Australia? Jobs?

0:05:45 > 0:05:47Obviously with the heat, can you work in the heat?

0:05:47 > 0:05:49Will I be able to earn the same money?

0:05:49 > 0:05:52There's a lot of questions that need answering.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56Dan's also worried about the emotional cost of moving.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Extremely close to his dad, he's torn at the thought

0:05:59 > 0:06:01of leaving him on his own.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06My dad has always been there for me, without fail, and I think now,

0:06:06 > 0:06:10maybe, at the age Dad is, it's my turn to be there for him.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18If something happened to my dad while I was the other side, I...

0:06:18 > 0:06:20I'd never forgive myself.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24Yeah.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28Julie does understand Dan's emotional ties,

0:06:28 > 0:06:32and worries about the impact leaving her own family will have too.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35I know it will break my mum's heart. I know it will.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37SHE SNIFFS

0:06:37 > 0:06:40And I know it'll break both my sisters' hearts as well.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42SHE SOBS QUIETLY

0:06:45 > 0:06:46SHE SNIFFS

0:06:46 > 0:06:49It makes me feel really selfish.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58Driven by her desire to show Dan and the children the lifestyle

0:06:58 > 0:07:00she truly believes will benefit them,

0:07:00 > 0:07:04and having invested so much time and money into getting a visa,

0:07:04 > 0:07:08Julie's desperate for the chance to make her dream their reality,

0:07:08 > 0:07:12and the next seven days will be her best chance to do it.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15This week in Australia is really finding out about whether the dream

0:07:15 > 0:07:19that Jule has got is achievable for us, whether it's worth moving

0:07:19 > 0:07:24to the other side of the world for and leaving what we've got here.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27I can almost feel it, and I really want it for the children

0:07:27 > 0:07:32and I really want it for us, and I just want to try.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35I just want to try. I want to follow my dream.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46To find out if Australia's where their future lies,

0:07:46 > 0:07:50the family are visiting Western Australia's capital city, Perth.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Their base for the week is in Halls Head,

0:07:52 > 0:07:55a costal suburb just over an hour's drive from the city.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59But will Australian living be as good as Julie remembers?

0:08:03 > 0:08:06- Wow, look at that. - That looks very grand, doesn't it?

0:08:06 > 0:08:07Look at the sea!

0:08:07 > 0:08:08Wow!

0:08:08 > 0:08:10That's a proper sea view.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12Despite the dull day,

0:08:12 > 0:08:16Julie is delighted with the beachfront location.

0:08:16 > 0:08:17Wow.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20Now, this is the type of place I would love to live.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23- You should've married a millionaire. - DAN AND JULIE LAUGH

0:08:25 > 0:08:29Back inside, Dan admits he's impressed too.

0:08:29 > 0:08:30Very, very nice. Very, very nice.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Yeah.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36Julie casts her mind back to when she last lived in Australia.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39I think there was three of us in a bedroom with bunk beds

0:08:39 > 0:08:41and one bathroom for eight people,

0:08:41 > 0:08:44so, yeah, this is a whole, whole other world.

0:08:44 > 0:08:45It's amazing.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49Fuelled by excitement, the family wastes no time hitting the beach.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53That looks all right, doesn't it? Think they like it?

0:08:53 > 0:08:55I think they love it, don't they? Look at them.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59They've not been here long, but the children are already sold.

0:08:59 > 0:09:00Australia's epic!

0:09:00 > 0:09:02I think Australia's good.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08Finally settled in, Julie's encouraged by everything so far.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10It's just been amazing

0:09:10 > 0:09:13and I think the kids have taken it really well.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16But Dan's keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18This house is fantastic,

0:09:18 > 0:09:21but it's whether we can afford something like this.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23There's just lots of things to find out.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26Having flown over 10,000 miles,

0:09:26 > 0:09:28he's already worried about the practicalities

0:09:28 > 0:09:32of being so far from the people he loves back home.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34I found it quite difficult travelling here

0:09:34 > 0:09:39so, obviously, my dad, I don't know if he'd actually be able to do it

0:09:39 > 0:09:40so, yeah,

0:09:40 > 0:09:44it's sort of bittersweet at the moment.

0:09:44 > 0:09:49The week ahead will determine whether or not Dan can buy into Julie's dream

0:09:49 > 0:09:53but, for now at least, she is confident things will go her way.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56This is us finding out if this is what we actually want to do

0:09:56 > 0:09:57for the rest of our lives

0:09:57 > 0:10:00so it's got to be amazing

0:10:00 > 0:10:01and I think it will be.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11Back in the UK, the Rutlands live in a three-bedroom semidetached house

0:10:11 > 0:10:12in Bicester in Oxfordshire

0:10:12 > 0:10:15and they've worked hard to make it a home.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17I would quite like to transport our house

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- and Danny's worked really hard. - Yeah.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24I tell him what we're going to do and he works really hard to do it.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26Knowing she can't take it with her,

0:10:26 > 0:10:30Julie has a clear idea of what she'd like from a home in Australia.

0:10:30 > 0:10:35My dream house would have four bedrooms,

0:10:35 > 0:10:37plus a granny annexe so people could come and stay

0:10:37 > 0:10:40and an open-plan kitchen-dining area

0:10:40 > 0:10:44plus a swimming pool and literally practically on the beach.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47Dan has slightly different ideas.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50I'd like it maybe not so much on the beach.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54For me, it'd be more a harbour

0:10:54 > 0:10:57so that I could have somewhere to put my boat

0:10:57 > 0:11:01but, there again, you know, I could have a boat here,

0:11:01 > 0:11:02but I can't afford that either.

0:11:09 > 0:11:15Julie and Dan have around £250,000 to spend on a home in Australia.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17To find out what their money could buy,

0:11:17 > 0:11:19we'll show them three properties,

0:11:19 > 0:11:23two based on budget and the third which could be their dream home.

0:11:23 > 0:11:28Only after they've seen each property will they find out its value.

0:11:28 > 0:11:29It is a very nice area.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32It is, it is. It is a nice area.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34The search begins in Secret Harbour,

0:11:34 > 0:11:36just 45 minutes drive from central Perth.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38This well-established suburb

0:11:38 > 0:11:41offers a choice of schools and recreation areas.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45Its stunning beach location should be a further draw for Julie,

0:11:45 > 0:11:48but will this four-bedroom house be what she's looking for?

0:11:48 > 0:11:49Yeah.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51- What do you think? - Yeah, this is all right.

0:11:51 > 0:11:52Isn't it nice?

0:11:54 > 0:11:56Hopefully, she won't be disappointed.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58Come on in, kids.

0:11:58 > 0:11:59SHE GASPS

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- Oh, wow.- Yeah, I like it.

0:12:05 > 0:12:06It is a bit dark, isn't it?

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Yeah, a little bit, but I think maybe it is just quite a dark room.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12The grey day outside probably doesn't help,

0:12:12 > 0:12:15but will the open kitchen and living area Julie desires

0:12:15 > 0:12:18be enough to brighten her outlook?

0:12:18 > 0:12:21I don't know if it's kind of what I had in mind.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24It is open-plan living,

0:12:24 > 0:12:28but perhaps not as open plan as I was hoping.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30She might be the one pushing for the move,

0:12:30 > 0:12:34but this house isn't quite what Julie's been dreaming of.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38- A main bedroom off of a lounge area. - It's en suite.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43Oh, it is a nice en suite, isn't it? It's a really big one.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47Julie soon spots potential in the other bedrooms too.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49I love the windows at the front.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51- You do like a bay window, don't you? - I do.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53But is the room as pleasing?

0:12:53 > 0:12:57- It's a good double bedroom for one of the kids.- Yeah, it is good.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00- It's a good size.- It's actually growing on me, this house.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02The inside may be winning Julie over

0:13:02 > 0:13:06but will the outside space be what they're after?

0:13:06 > 0:13:10It is nice. I do like the outdoor area. I do like it.

0:13:10 > 0:13:11It's very nice.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14Dan, on the other hand, is unhappy with the fake grass.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17It sounds like there's plastic bags underneath it, doesn't it?

0:13:17 > 0:13:19But Julie's not concerned.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22I can definitely see myself in a garden like this.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24See! You've changed your mind.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27Now the sun's come out, "Yeah, this is brilliant, yeah."

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Julie's enthusiasm has lifted with the clouds

0:13:30 > 0:13:33and she doesn't even mind the lack of swimming pool.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36As long as we're near to the sea, that would be more important

0:13:36 > 0:13:40than having a pool, but it would still have been nice.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43The house has had mixed reactions, but the big question is

0:13:43 > 0:13:45how much does it cost

0:13:45 > 0:13:50and would Julie and Dan's £250,000 budget be enough to buy it?

0:13:50 > 0:13:53Just over 200,000 or just under 200,000.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55That's what I'd be prepared to pay for it.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57I think it's going to be over budget.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59I think maybe about 275.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01If this is over budget,

0:14:01 > 0:14:03I mean, I'm going to feel, I think, quite disappointed by it.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Time to turn the card and find out.

0:14:10 > 0:14:11See what it is.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16£254,600.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19That is pretty much bang on our budget.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21- That's OK.- Yeah, yeah.

0:14:21 > 0:14:22Are you a bit disappointed?

0:14:22 > 0:14:25Yeah, yeah, I was hoping it was going to be less than that.

0:14:25 > 0:14:30The first taste of Perth's property prices has been bittersweet for Dan.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32If Julie's to convince him to make the move,

0:14:32 > 0:14:35the next house needs to be more on the money.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37To find out, the family head to Baldivis,

0:14:37 > 0:14:42a rapidly expanding suburb just under 30 miles south of the city.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Further inland, it's a 15-minute drive from the beach,

0:14:46 > 0:14:49but that could mean the family get better value for their money.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53Will the house be up to spec for the Rutlands?

0:14:53 > 0:14:54This all looks very nice.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56I like the look of this house.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58They're off to a good start.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04- Straight into a bedroom. - See, I just like this more.

0:15:04 > 0:15:05This furnishing is more

0:15:05 > 0:15:07- like we would have in the house, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11And a walk-in wardrobe puts an even bigger smile on Julie's face.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14Oh, look, you can put shoes in drawers. That's me sold!

0:15:14 > 0:15:16DAN LAUGHS

0:15:16 > 0:15:20The en suite's more pleasing than the last one.

0:15:20 > 0:15:25- Oh, this is much nicer. Look. - Oh, yeah, this is nice.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27- It's much more to our taste.- Yeah.

0:15:27 > 0:15:28It's all good so far.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30Will the open-plan kitchen/living area

0:15:30 > 0:15:33be in line with Julie's expectations?

0:15:33 > 0:15:37- Oh, I love it!- So do I. - Yeah, it's much nicer.- Yeah.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39The kids could sit in the morning

0:15:39 > 0:15:41and I could be making their packed lunch and they could all be

0:15:41 > 0:15:45sitting there having breakfast and we're all talking at the same time.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49That could get noisy, Julie! But Dan's got an even bigger concern.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52This house makes me smile, but that means, to me,

0:15:52 > 0:15:54it's going to cost even more and be out of our price range.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57No, you don't know. It's further away from the sea.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00The house also has a separate play room for the children.

0:16:00 > 0:16:01JULIE GASPS

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Wow, this is amazing!

0:16:03 > 0:16:06With four bedrooms, the children won't have to share.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10And when they spot a pool in the garden, Julie can't believe her luck.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12This house just got even better!

0:16:12 > 0:16:14Yeah, this house just got more expensive.

0:16:14 > 0:16:15JULIE LAUGHS

0:16:15 > 0:16:18Oh, my God, I love it!

0:16:18 > 0:16:23Despite his concerns about cost, Dan has to admit he's bowled over.

0:16:23 > 0:16:24If we could afford this house...

0:16:24 > 0:16:26you've got me in Australia.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28JULIE CHUCKLES

0:16:28 > 0:16:30But before Julie gets too carried away,

0:16:30 > 0:16:33the family need to see how much this house costs

0:16:33 > 0:16:38and whether, with £250,000 to spend, they can afford it.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41I think it's going to be around...

0:16:41 > 0:16:44- about 270. 270, 280? - Do you?- Yeah.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47I think it's going to be about 315.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49Let's see who's right.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57- Let's have a look. - JULIE GASPS

0:16:57 > 0:17:02- Oh! See, I was right. - £262,800?

0:17:02 > 0:17:04That's amazing! That's doable.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07- Yeah, it is doable. - That's just made my day.- Yeah.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09Yeah, it certainly hasn't ruined mine.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12What do you think, kids? Cos we could afford that.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14- THEY CHANT:- Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

0:17:14 > 0:17:15Is that a yes, then?

0:17:17 > 0:17:21£12,000 over budget hasn't dented Julie's enthusiasm,

0:17:21 > 0:17:23and even Dan seems content with the cost.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28And the day's not over yet,

0:17:28 > 0:17:31as the Rutlands head for the coastal suburb of Waikiki.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34With shops, schools and adventure parks,

0:17:34 > 0:17:36it's a popular area with families.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42Based on their ideal wish list, we found what could be their dream home.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44But will Dan and Julie agree?

0:17:44 > 0:17:47- Well, it looks very nice, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:17:47 > 0:17:51Just think how close we were to the beach! It was amazing, wasn't it?

0:17:51 > 0:17:55Just one street back from the sea, it's a thumbs up for location.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57Whoa! Let's have a look.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00- Wow, it looks huge. - Oh, it's massive!- Wow!

0:18:00 > 0:18:05It's not short on space, but is the style to Dan and Julie's taste?

0:18:05 > 0:18:06This seems a bit more...

0:18:07 > 0:18:10..a bit more homely. Maybe it's cos of the carpet.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12Not sure if that's an advantage.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16But moving on, the main living area isn't quite what they were expecting.

0:18:16 > 0:18:17Oh, this is a bit different.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Yeah...

0:18:21 > 0:18:23Julie doesn't sound sure.

0:18:23 > 0:18:24I don't like the kitchen.

0:18:24 > 0:18:29- It's not really a really big area, and I don't like all the bricks.- No.

0:18:29 > 0:18:30With four bedrooms, on paper,

0:18:30 > 0:18:33the house meets many of Julie's requirements,

0:18:33 > 0:18:36but the reality isn't matching up.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40And the master bedroom wouldn't entice Dan to make the move.

0:18:40 > 0:18:44It's disappointing again, if this is supposed to be your main bedroom.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48On the other ones, from the outside you think, "Oh, they're tiny."

0:18:48 > 0:18:51- This one, you think, "It's going to be massive," and it's not.- No...

0:18:51 > 0:18:53Julie looks crestfallen,

0:18:53 > 0:18:57and the dated en suite does little to lift her spirits.

0:18:57 > 0:19:02There's so much work that you'd need to do, that I would WANT to do...

0:19:02 > 0:19:05It'd be quicker, honestly, to knock it down.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09The interiors of this house have failed to wow Julie and Dan,

0:19:09 > 0:19:13but the spacious outdoor living area might just score a few points.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18- I do really like this.- Yeah?

0:19:18 > 0:19:19JULIE GASPS

0:19:19 > 0:19:21- Jacuzzi?- Oh, I'm liking it a little bit more.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23Julie's back on form!

0:19:23 > 0:19:26You could imagine sitting out here with a group of friends,

0:19:26 > 0:19:29can't you, in the evening with a bottle of wine?

0:19:29 > 0:19:33And even though it's close to the beach, it's got the pool Julie wants.

0:19:33 > 0:19:34Well, that's a big swimming pool.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37That's a really lovely-size swimming pool.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41Despite earlier reservations, could this be the dream house after all?

0:19:41 > 0:19:44- This outside bit, this bit... - Is beautiful.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Y'know, this pool is fantastic.

0:19:47 > 0:19:52But I still don't know whether I'd want to spend thousands doing it up.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54I guess it depends how much it costs.

0:19:54 > 0:19:58The jury's still out as Julie and Dan prepare to find out how much

0:19:58 > 0:20:00they'd be paying for a house like this.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03I think you're probably going to be looking at about 350,

0:20:03 > 0:20:06given that you've still got four bedrooms.

0:20:07 > 0:20:08No. No, for this...

0:20:09 > 0:20:13- A really big pool..- You've got four bedrooms, a big pool.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16- Really near to the sea...- Yeah, I think you might be right, 350.

0:20:16 > 0:20:17- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20I don't think you're going to be far off with that.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23The family's budget is £250,000.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28- Turn it over.- Turn it over.

0:20:28 > 0:20:34- Whoa!- £318,900.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38- Wow!- 625.- So that's less than what I thought it would be, actually.- Yeah.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41It's less than I thought it would be, quite a bit less, to be fair,

0:20:41 > 0:20:44but this house, for me, it just doesn't flow.

0:20:44 > 0:20:49At almost £70,000 over budget, this house is out of reach

0:20:49 > 0:20:53unless Julie and Dan's earnings increase substantially down under.

0:20:53 > 0:20:58Overall, it's been an eye-opening property search for the Rutlands.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01Property one failed to deliver the large and bright living space

0:21:01 > 0:21:06Julie dreams of, and almost £5,000 over budget left Dan disappointed.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12With the open-plan living Julie loves and a pool in the garden,

0:21:12 > 0:21:15Property two was a real hit with the whole family.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20But even close to the beach and with a pool,

0:21:20 > 0:21:24the final property of the day didn't meet Julie's expectations

0:21:24 > 0:21:29and at nearly £70,000 over budget proved unaffordable.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34So, how will the day influence their decision

0:21:34 > 0:21:38when it comes to picking between property in the UK and Australia?

0:21:39 > 0:21:44Based on the houses that we've seen today, we're now going to vote.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56- ALL:- Australia!

0:21:57 > 0:22:02Yay! We all voted Australia! You voted for Australia!

0:22:02 > 0:22:05- I'm really pleased.- Yeah, yeah, I like some of the houses we saw.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09The weather's not brilliant, but I can see what it offers out here.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11It's on par with what I've got at home.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Oh, I'm so excited, this is a really good start to the week.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16- It's a good start for me, as well.- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:22:24 > 0:22:29Five votes for Australia has got the week off to a good start.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32But falling for Aussie property is the easy part.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35Julie knows if Dan can't be convinced he can find a job to pay

0:22:35 > 0:22:39for the house he wants, he won't be moving anywhere.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44Back in the UK, Dan's been a carpenter for 16 years.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47Happy in his work and with the lifestyle it affords,

0:22:47 > 0:22:50he has huge reservations about packing it in.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54Everything I've heard over there is saying things are more expensive,

0:22:54 > 0:22:57so it is whether the salary is achievable

0:22:57 > 0:22:59with a job that I want, as well.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01As a former Formula One engineer,

0:23:01 > 0:23:05Julie plans to retrain as a teacher in Australia but knows it's

0:23:05 > 0:23:09Dan's work prospects that could make or break her dream to emigrate.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11It's really important that Dan gets the right job

0:23:11 > 0:23:14and salary in Australia, because I think that will be absolutely

0:23:14 > 0:23:16key to him making a decision.

0:23:16 > 0:23:20As Dan and Julie prepare to explore work options in Perth,

0:23:20 > 0:23:23Dan's realistic about what the day really means.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25Yesterday was an important day, obviously, to see

0:23:25 > 0:23:29what houses we could get, but today is probably even more important,

0:23:29 > 0:23:33because we've got to make sure that we can actually afford it.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36We've arranged for him to meet Robert Shaw,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40a director at one of Perth's well-established building companies.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43After a quick look around the site,

0:23:43 > 0:23:46Dan gets down to the nitty-gritty of finding work.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49I've had a look at your resume. You've been in the industry a while,

0:23:49 > 0:23:52so, yes, I would say all your skills are definitely transferable.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54If you've got the skill set that you've got, which is

0:23:54 > 0:23:57an ideal base for a supervisor, you'd certainly get a crack here.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01The bad news is Robert suggests Dan might need to learn about

0:24:01 > 0:24:04the Aussie way of working before becoming a supervisor.

0:24:04 > 0:24:08Meanwhile, Julie's gone to the Edith Cowan University to meet

0:24:08 > 0:24:11student recruitment co-ordinator Sarah Bally to find out

0:24:11 > 0:24:14about becoming a maths or science teacher.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17We offer a graduate diploma of education,

0:24:17 > 0:24:19which is a one-year conversion course,

0:24:19 > 0:24:23pretty much, for people that have a completed bachelor degree already.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25If, for example, you're going to become

0:24:25 > 0:24:27a maths teacher and a science teacher,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30we need to see that you've specialised that

0:24:30 > 0:24:31in your bachelor degree.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33With an engineering degree under her belt,

0:24:33 > 0:24:35that shouldn't be a problem for Julie.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39But she still needs to find out how much the course would cost.

0:24:39 > 0:24:44Approximately Aus 6,200 for the full year, for the full course.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48Around £3,000 is comparable with what she'd pay back home.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51- That's really great. Thank you very much.- No worries!

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Back at the building firm,

0:24:54 > 0:24:58Dan's keen to find out about potential earnings in the short term.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00I understand that I would have to start off on the bottom.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02Would that mean less money?

0:25:02 > 0:25:05You'd be around roughly £30,000.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07That's not as much as I earn at home.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10It's not the answer Dan wants, but Robert assures him,

0:25:10 > 0:25:12he could soon be earning a lot more.

0:25:12 > 0:25:17As a supervisor, you might look at somewhere around

0:25:17 > 0:25:19Aus 70,000 to 80,000,

0:25:19 > 0:25:22up to 125,000.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26Between £39,000 and £60,000 is much more promising,

0:25:26 > 0:25:30and Dan's taken aback when Robert makes him an offer.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32If you were lucky enough to come over here

0:25:32 > 0:25:34and we had a position available

0:25:34 > 0:25:38and we wanted to train you off as a supervisor straight off the bat,

0:25:38 > 0:25:41would you be prepared to look at something like that?

0:25:41 > 0:25:44Erm, yeah, obviously, coming over here with the proposition

0:25:44 > 0:25:47of getting a job would obviously make it, yeah, even easier.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49It's great news for Dan.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Meanwhile, Julie's gone to meet Alison Ramm,

0:25:52 > 0:25:54director of school staffing services

0:25:54 > 0:25:57at Western Australia's Department of Education.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59- Hello!- Hi.

0:25:59 > 0:26:04Alison's already read Julie's CV, and the meeting gets off to a good start.

0:26:04 > 0:26:08You'd be a perfect candidate to move into maths or science teaching,

0:26:08 > 0:26:11because not only would you have that qualification,

0:26:11 > 0:26:14you'd also have that great industry experience.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17That's very encouraging, and there's more good news to come.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20We actually currently have a shortage of secondary teachers,

0:26:20 > 0:26:24so jobs are advertised on our government's job board.

0:26:24 > 0:26:25In fact, I looked this morning,

0:26:25 > 0:26:28and there's two science and two maths jobs currently advertised.

0:26:28 > 0:26:32With jobs looking plentiful, all Julie needs to find out now

0:26:32 > 0:26:35is whether the salary would justify her retraining.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37What sort of wages could I expect once I qualified?

0:26:37 > 0:26:39You'd start at the moment

0:26:39 > 0:26:42- on about £35,000 a year.- Wow!

0:26:42 > 0:26:46If you worked here for three years, you would progress to about £42,000,

0:26:46 > 0:26:50and then, after seven years, you'd be on about £49,000.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52That sort of salary's amazing.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55It's been a great day for Julie at work, and

0:26:55 > 0:27:00when she reunites with Dan she's over the moon to hear about his job offer.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04He sort of said, if we come over, to give him a call

0:27:04 > 0:27:07and he'd be able to, if he's got jobs going and looking for people,

0:27:07 > 0:27:08he'd take me on and give me a go.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12So you could give him a ring when we move.

0:27:12 > 0:27:13When we move, yeah. If we move.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16THEY LAUGH

0:27:16 > 0:27:19Dan's not jumping into anything, but now it's time to discover

0:27:19 > 0:27:22whether today has done enough to make the couple both choose work

0:27:22 > 0:27:25in Australia over the UK.

0:27:25 > 0:27:30After a great day looking at job prospects, it's time to vote.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40- BOTH:- Australia!

0:27:41 > 0:27:43SHE SHRIEKS

0:27:43 > 0:27:45Oh, I'm so pleased!

0:27:49 > 0:27:52With a potential job offer under his belt

0:27:52 > 0:27:56and the assurance of plenty of work for Julie if she retrains,

0:27:56 > 0:28:00one by one Dan's practical concerns are being chipped away.

0:28:00 > 0:28:04Buoyed by his enthusiasm, Julie could be onto a winning streak.

0:28:04 > 0:28:08So will a day sampling Australia's lifestyle

0:28:08 > 0:28:11see her vision for a new life down under brought one step closer?

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Making the most of the time together, the family set out to explore

0:28:21 > 0:28:26the historic city of Fremantle, just 30 minutes from central Perth.

0:28:29 > 0:28:33First stop's the famous markets, where Dan wastes no time

0:28:33 > 0:28:36getting to grips with traditional Australian culture.

0:28:36 > 0:28:38HE BLOWS A DEEP NOTE

0:28:41 > 0:28:44- You're practically a native! - No, I don't think so!

0:28:44 > 0:28:45Nice try, Julie!

0:28:45 > 0:28:47After a leisurely stroll round the market,

0:28:47 > 0:28:50the family refuel with some authentic Aussie food.

0:28:51 > 0:28:54There's over 200 million kangaroos in Australia,

0:28:54 > 0:28:58- so we use a lot of kangaroo. - It's really nice, isn't it?

0:28:58 > 0:29:02Zack's definitely enjoying his first proper taste of Australian living.

0:29:02 > 0:29:06Coming to the market here every day would be fantastic.

0:29:06 > 0:29:08And Dan looks impressed, too.

0:29:08 > 0:29:11- Is all this convincing you? - It's working.

0:29:11 > 0:29:13- Oh! I'm so excited!- It's working.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16It's a great start to the day, but when the family venture out

0:29:16 > 0:29:20for a walk through the harbour, Dan's thoughts return to home.

0:29:20 > 0:29:23The family side of things, I think, is what's still playing on me,

0:29:23 > 0:29:25and that's leaving my dad.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27If I do move over here, even though

0:29:27 > 0:29:30Dad's said that he would come over and see me, it is a long way.

0:29:30 > 0:29:31I'm just not sure if

0:29:31 > 0:29:34that's something that he would actually be able to achieve.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37Julie could still have a battle on her hands

0:29:37 > 0:29:38convincing Dan to make the move.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41But meanwhile, the family end their day

0:29:41 > 0:29:43with a fishing trip on the Swan River.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45Well, this is the boat, guys. Come on board.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48- Whoohoo! - DAN LAUGHS

0:29:48 > 0:29:50- Could we get something like that, Dad?- Probably not,

0:29:50 > 0:29:52mate, unless I nick it.

0:29:52 > 0:29:53ZACK LAUGHS

0:29:53 > 0:29:57He might not be able to afford the biggest boat on the river,

0:29:57 > 0:30:00but is this lifestyle one he could imagine living?

0:30:00 > 0:30:03Yeah, I could definitely see myself taking one of these out.

0:30:03 > 0:30:07I'd probably have, like, a doughnut on the back towing along Zack.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09For now, Julie's concentrating on

0:30:09 > 0:30:13selling days like this to Willow and Faye.

0:30:13 > 0:30:17- Could you see us coming over and spending days on the river?- Yeah!

0:30:17 > 0:30:20Catching a fish gets Zack on board, too.

0:30:20 > 0:30:21Oh, I caught a fish!

0:30:21 > 0:30:24The day's panned out well for everyone.

0:30:24 > 0:30:25The sun's come out for us.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28Yeah, it's just brilliant. I'm loving seeing them all really happy.

0:30:28 > 0:30:31It might be a bit too small for your head!

0:30:31 > 0:30:35But as it draws to a close, Dan's still mulling over the reality.

0:30:35 > 0:30:39Days like this would mean sacrificing relationships

0:30:39 > 0:30:41with everyone they love back home.

0:30:41 > 0:30:45Yeah, it's all good, it's just that one thing about family.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48- I know. I'll really miss them. - SHE SOBS

0:30:48 > 0:30:49And it is such a long way.

0:30:54 > 0:30:57The family face a tough decision come the end of the week,

0:30:57 > 0:31:00but now it's time to see if the day's done enough to make them

0:31:00 > 0:31:04all put Australia's lifestyle ahead of the UK's.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08Well, it's time to vote.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22- ALL:- Australia!

0:31:23 > 0:31:25Yay!

0:31:25 > 0:31:27Yay, we've all voted the same!

0:31:27 > 0:31:29- Dan?- Yeah, no, it was really good. It's been a really good day.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31I mean, the sun's out. Brilliant.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34- And you've said I can have a boat. - JULIE LAUGHS

0:31:34 > 0:31:37It's our third vote, and the whole family

0:31:37 > 0:31:40so far has voted for Australia, which is just amazing!

0:31:53 > 0:31:56With another clean sweep of votes for Australia,

0:31:56 > 0:31:59Julie's dream is gathering pace.

0:31:59 > 0:32:01But she knows Dan has to be convinced the move won't risk

0:32:01 > 0:32:05their financial stability, otherwise they won't be going anywhere.

0:32:05 > 0:32:09To fund the move, the couple would need to sell their house in the UK.

0:32:09 > 0:32:14They believe it's worth around £300,000. To see if they're right,

0:32:14 > 0:32:17we sent round two estate agents for current valuations.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21So, we're going to find out how much our house is worth.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23Go on, then, mate, you going to press play?

0:32:26 > 0:32:28Ooh, look, there's our house!

0:32:28 > 0:32:31That's funny, seeing your house on TV, isn't it?

0:32:31 > 0:32:36Yes, I like this room. Double-glazed windows, plenty of space.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39It's a good family size.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41And these units, well, they're well built.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44Great, spacious, very good use.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46I know, I built them.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49Yeah, good-size room. You've got space for a range cooker,

0:32:49 > 0:32:54and the dual-aspect windows make it, again, a light, bright and airy room.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57Yeah, so, this is the main bedroom. We've got built-in wardrobes.

0:32:57 > 0:32:59A bit of work necessary here.

0:32:59 > 0:33:02- SHE TRIES TO SUPPRESS A CHUCKLE - Oh, no, I forgot about that!

0:33:02 > 0:33:04OK, I'm really loving the size of the green area there.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07Definitely good for entertaining, for the kids etc.

0:33:07 > 0:33:09Looks like the lawn could have been mowed.

0:33:09 > 0:33:11In the current market, I would set the price

0:33:11 > 0:33:16at £260,000 and for early sale £250,000.

0:33:16 > 0:33:17No!

0:33:19 > 0:33:21In the current market, I would value this property

0:33:21 > 0:33:25at 315,000. For quick sale, 300,000.

0:33:25 > 0:33:30- Better!- See? See? Proves I'm right. - I definitely think 260 is too low.

0:33:30 > 0:33:34And if it was to sell for that, we would really struggle.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36Yeah, we would, yeah.

0:33:36 > 0:33:38It's a disappointing start.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41And as they sit down to work out finances in Australia,

0:33:41 > 0:33:45Julie knows Dan could be a tough audience.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47It's been really good, but if the figures aren't there

0:33:47 > 0:33:50and we can't afford to do it, we can't afford to do it.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53We've provided some cost-of-living comparison documents,

0:33:53 > 0:33:56starting with the weekly grocery shop.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58- Bananas.- Yeah?

0:33:58 > 0:34:02£1.20 in the UK for ten bananas.

0:34:02 > 0:34:04£4.49 in Australia?!

0:34:04 > 0:34:10- Yeah.- Biscuits. For three packs, it's £1.20 in the UK.

0:34:10 > 0:34:13The equivalent is nearly £4 in Australia!

0:34:14 > 0:34:18Julie tots up the figures to work out the overall damage.

0:34:18 > 0:34:22Our weekly shopping would be £149.

0:34:22 > 0:34:26Although more expensive than the UK, the figures aren't too bad.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30- £11.60 is neither her nor there. - That's a really positive start.

0:34:30 > 0:34:31Yes, that's OK.

0:34:31 > 0:34:35The couple move on to look at the bigger monthly outgoings,

0:34:35 > 0:34:39basing their figures on the second property they viewed.

0:34:39 > 0:34:44So, in Australia, the cost of the mortgage would be £840.

0:34:44 > 0:34:48- In Australia, yeah. - And the UK cost is £570.- Yeah.

0:34:48 > 0:34:50A quick check at the figures reveals the couple would also spend

0:34:50 > 0:34:54more on gas, electricity and water but, fortunately,

0:34:54 > 0:34:57fuel costs are a bit more palatable.

0:34:57 > 0:34:59We pay £400 in the UK.

0:34:59 > 0:35:03- And 238.- That's just amazing, isn't it?- That's massive.

0:35:03 > 0:35:10Overall, the couple's monthly bills would rise to £2,677.

0:35:10 > 0:35:16- Every month, we would be £241... - Worse off. Yeah?- Yeah.- OK.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18It's a lot of money.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21We'll just have to hope that our salaries can compensate.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24This could be where Julie's plans begin to unravel.

0:35:24 > 0:35:29In the UK, Dan earns almost £2,400 every month,

0:35:29 > 0:35:32but that figure's likely to decrease down under.

0:35:32 > 0:35:36- ..and the Australian equivalent is £2,080.- Yeah.

0:35:36 > 0:35:40Obviously, I'm not feeling particularly happy about that.

0:35:40 > 0:35:44That's £300 a month less, virtually.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47Hopefully, the potential for Julie to earn more once she's qualified

0:35:47 > 0:35:49will help balance the books.

0:35:49 > 0:35:53So, in the UK my salary is about £700 a month,

0:35:53 > 0:35:57and in Australia that's got the potential to be 1,330.

0:35:57 > 0:36:03The couple's potential joint income would be just over £3,400.

0:36:03 > 0:36:07When they subtract the higher bills, the result's not too bad.

0:36:07 > 0:36:13- So we're left with £733 every month. - So we'd be £94 better off.- Yeah.

0:36:13 > 0:36:17It's not a fortune, but Julie's relieved they're still in the black.

0:36:17 > 0:36:21- I'm just... I'm just delighted. - I'm slowly losing this battle.

0:36:21 > 0:36:24That's brilliant. It's made my day.

0:36:24 > 0:36:28The figures have shown the move to be affordable, but are they good enough

0:36:28 > 0:36:30to keep Dan and Julie on the same page when it comes

0:36:30 > 0:36:34to choosing between finances in Australia and the UK?

0:36:34 > 0:36:36It's time to vote.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47- BOTH:- Australia!

0:36:47 > 0:36:49- Yay! - DAN LAUGHS

0:36:49 > 0:36:51- Well done! - So four out of four, yeah?

0:36:51 > 0:36:54- That was a bit of a no-brainer, really, wasn't it?- Yeah, yeah.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56We're better off in this country, so...

0:36:56 > 0:36:59- Yeah.- Yeah. Yeah? - Which is amazing.

0:36:59 > 0:37:01Yeah. I think I'm surprising meself!

0:37:03 > 0:37:07Realising the move's financially feasible has put Dan even further

0:37:07 > 0:37:12on Julie's side, but the greatest hurdle of all is on the horizon.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16Dan's always been concerned about leaving loved ones in the UK.

0:37:17 > 0:37:18While the children play outside,

0:37:18 > 0:37:23the couple sit down to watch heartfelt messages from home.

0:37:23 > 0:37:27I'm ready for watching the videos of friends and family.

0:37:28 > 0:37:33Hello, Danny, Julie. I love you all.

0:37:33 > 0:37:35I hope you're having a good time.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38Hello from Blighty!

0:37:38 > 0:37:40- ALL:- Hi, guys!

0:37:40 > 0:37:42Really hope you're having a terrible time in Australia.

0:37:42 > 0:37:46- Hope the weather's awful. - Yeah, and those spiders...

0:37:46 > 0:37:49- Julie and Dan are very well suited, aren't they?- Oh, very well.

0:37:49 > 0:37:52They make a good pair and a very good family for the children.

0:37:52 > 0:37:55She's very domineering. I feel sorry for him at times.

0:37:55 > 0:37:57He's like a little dog, isn't he?

0:37:57 > 0:38:00I thought she was really brave when she left her job that she loved

0:38:00 > 0:38:03because she knew that staying at home and looking after the children

0:38:03 > 0:38:06was really important to her, and I really admired her decision.

0:38:06 > 0:38:08Well, Harry would be definitely gutted that's Zack left,

0:38:08 > 0:38:11and I'd be pretty gutted that Dan's gone, to be fair.

0:38:11 > 0:38:14Yeah, I just think there'll be a hole in family get-togethers.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17There'll be people missing.

0:38:17 > 0:38:23I do wonder what will happen if and when something goes wrong

0:38:23 > 0:38:27and she has nobody there to support her.

0:38:27 > 0:38:30And, yeah, she is my best friend,

0:38:30 > 0:38:33and I shall miss her terribly when she's gone.

0:38:33 > 0:38:34I'm dreading it!

0:38:34 > 0:38:36But it's best for them.

0:38:41 > 0:38:43Yeah...

0:38:43 > 0:38:45We're just...

0:38:45 > 0:38:47We're a really close family, and...

0:38:48 > 0:38:51..I didn't think she'd...

0:38:51 > 0:38:53want to move away from us.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58I'm still really gutted that...

0:38:58 > 0:39:00they're really serious about it.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09I love him dearly.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12If they do...

0:39:12 > 0:39:16decide to go to Australia...

0:39:16 > 0:39:17erm...

0:39:18 > 0:39:20..I'll be a bit upset.

0:39:20 > 0:39:23If you really think Australia will give you a better

0:39:23 > 0:39:25quality of life, then you need to do it.

0:39:28 > 0:39:32But I don't want you to go, and I'd be really gutted if you did.

0:39:40 > 0:39:43That was just as hard...

0:39:43 > 0:39:45as I thought it was going to be.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47It's, like, I don't want to leave them.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49If I could bring them all with me, I would.

0:39:49 > 0:39:52Yeah, that was really tough.

0:39:52 > 0:39:53It was always going to be.

0:39:56 > 0:40:00Messages from home have been as tough to hear as Dan feared.

0:40:00 > 0:40:03With not a dry eye between them,

0:40:03 > 0:40:06the couple have been left contemplating the enormity

0:40:06 > 0:40:10of putting thousands of miles between them and their loved ones.

0:40:10 > 0:40:13After such a positive week for the family,

0:40:13 > 0:40:18will the emotional pull back to the UK prove too strong to overcome?

0:40:21 > 0:40:23When the family touched down in Australia a week ago,

0:40:23 > 0:40:27Julie was desperate to convince Dan the country she fell in love with

0:40:27 > 0:40:3015 years previously was where their future lay.

0:40:32 > 0:40:34This week has been trying to find out

0:40:34 > 0:40:37whether Australia has the lifestyle that Jules thought it did,

0:40:37 > 0:40:41really, whether it was worth moving the other side of the world.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44Now a wife and mum, Julie's circumstances have changed

0:40:44 > 0:40:46since she was last here.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49But the country's more than lived up to her memories.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51In a way, I feel it's even better,

0:40:51 > 0:40:53because when you become a mum you get

0:40:53 > 0:40:57so much enjoyment from watching your children and seeing them

0:40:57 > 0:41:00in an environment where you know that they're going to thrive.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04Willow and Faye can see the advantages of Aussie living.

0:41:04 > 0:41:06We can go on the beach more in Australia

0:41:06 > 0:41:07and we can go outside more.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10We're not near the beach in England.

0:41:10 > 0:41:11Zack's enjoyed himself, too,

0:41:11 > 0:41:16but he's still not decided on where he wants to call home.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18I think the last vote with my family,

0:41:18 > 0:41:20it's going to be pretty hard to choose.

0:41:22 > 0:41:24And messages from loved ones in the UK

0:41:24 > 0:41:27have reminded Julie and Dan of how much they'd be giving up.

0:41:28 > 0:41:32Watching the family video was really hard, and it has put

0:41:32 > 0:41:35a dampener on everything throughout the week, in a way.

0:41:35 > 0:41:37It has made it really difficult.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41It was really hard on Jules.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44It was hard on me, as well, but, yeah, it was really hard on Jules.

0:41:44 > 0:41:47And it upset me watching her cry.

0:41:47 > 0:41:50With emotions running high, the family prepare to decide

0:41:50 > 0:41:53once and for all where they want to call home.

0:41:55 > 0:41:58Now it's time to make our final vote on where we would like to live.

0:42:12 > 0:42:15- ZACK: England! OTHERS:- Australia!

0:42:15 > 0:42:16That's the wrong way!

0:42:16 > 0:42:18You choose England.

0:42:18 > 0:42:20- Yeah.- Did you choose England?- Yeah.

0:42:20 > 0:42:25- Why would you prefer to live in England?- Because I miss my friends.

0:42:25 > 0:42:28Do you? That's OK. It's OK to miss your friends.

0:42:28 > 0:42:30That's OK.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33And, girls, why did you choose to live in Australia?

0:42:33 > 0:42:34Because it's nice and sunny!

0:42:34 > 0:42:39- And you can come in the water with us.- Dan? Australia?

0:42:39 > 0:42:41It's been a brilliant week.

0:42:41 > 0:42:46Everything I had doubts about has been allayed. Yeah, it's...

0:42:46 > 0:42:48I think it could work. I think it's worth giving it a go.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51- The Rutland family down under, eh? - Yeah. Yeah, I think so.

0:42:57 > 0:43:01Zack may still need some gentle persuasion,

0:43:01 > 0:43:03but with a majority vote for Australia,

0:43:03 > 0:43:09it looks like Julie's hard work and determination has finally paid off.

0:43:09 > 0:43:13We hope the move goes smoothly and that the family's new life down under

0:43:13 > 0:43:16is everything Julie's been dreaming of.
