0:00:02 > 0:00:05If you genuinely believe moving to the other side of the world

0:00:05 > 0:00:08would afford you more time with the people you love,

0:00:08 > 0:00:11but half of your family disagree,

0:00:11 > 0:00:14how would you go about persuading them to uproot

0:00:14 > 0:00:18and start again almost 10,000 miles from home?

0:00:18 > 0:00:22The Lancelotts are struggling to balance work and family life.

0:00:22 > 0:00:27It's very much eat, sleep, rave, repeat, except there's no raving.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29Mum Amanda knows things need to change.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32I don't want to get to 70 and go,

0:00:32 > 0:00:36"Oh, we only, sort of, saw each other for 35 of those years.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39She's convinced a move down under could be the answer.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Most of the lifestyle I dream about,

0:00:42 > 0:00:44more for the girls than anything else.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46But when the figures don't add up...

0:00:46 > 0:00:48It's pouring down a real cloud, now.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52..will Amanda's Australian dream be a wash-out?

0:01:13 > 0:01:17With around a quarter of its 23 million population born overseas,

0:01:17 > 0:01:21Australia's the top destination for those seeking a new life abroad.

0:01:21 > 0:01:27Promising sun, sea and a laid-back lifestyle, it's easy to see why

0:01:27 > 0:01:30but moving doesn't work out for everyone

0:01:30 > 0:01:33and of the 34,000 Brits who flock there every year,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35almost half end up returning to the UK.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Amanda Lancelott dreams of more quality time

0:01:40 > 0:01:44with her family and, despite never having been,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48believes Australia's the place to turn her vision into a reality.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52But with husband Dave and oldest daughter Morgan far from certain,

0:01:52 > 0:01:56will a week down under be enough to convince them to uproot

0:01:56 > 0:02:01their entire lives and start again on the other side of the world?

0:02:01 > 0:02:04The Lancelotts' trial week begins with more than 22 hours in the air

0:02:04 > 0:02:07to get to Brisbane on the east coast of Australia -

0:02:07 > 0:02:09a journey they won't forget in a hurry.

0:02:09 > 0:02:14- We started...- At Hooton and then we went to Chester

0:02:14 > 0:02:16and then we went to Heathrow.

0:02:16 > 0:02:21Heathrow to Dubai on a plane and then Dubai to...

0:02:21 > 0:02:23- Sydney.- And then Sydney to...

0:02:23 > 0:02:25- Brisbane.- To Brisbane. - You think,

0:02:25 > 0:02:29"Yeah, it's just a few flights" but actually, it's like, miles away.

0:02:29 > 0:02:30Now she's here, though,

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Amanda's very clear about her expectations for the week ahead.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36I said the other day, to all of us, and we were saying

0:02:36 > 0:02:38what are you most looking forward to the most?

0:02:38 > 0:02:41And the girls went, I know what you're going to say before you even say it -

0:02:41 > 0:02:45"More time as a family", and I said, "Absolutely."

0:02:45 > 0:02:49I think everything else is really superficial to me.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Dave won't be quite so easily pleased.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53It's jobs for me. I've said that from day one.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57If the job's not out here, there's no point in coming out here.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59But he's prepared to keep an open mind.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03You could come here and you could hate it and I could love it. It could be roles reversal

0:03:03 > 0:03:04- at the end of the week. So...- Yeah.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08We just need to see whether the card gets turned, or not.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10The next seven days could be life-changing,

0:03:10 > 0:03:12as the family set out on a journey

0:03:12 > 0:03:16which could determine on which side of the world their future lies.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Meet the Lancelotts - mum Amanda,

0:03:21 > 0:03:22dad Dave,

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Morgan, who's 12, and ten-year-old Naomi.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28They live in the village of Hooton in Cheshire.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Come here, boys. Come here.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34It's the perfect setting for family life,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37but things aren't quite as they should be.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39It's very much eat, sleep, rave, repeat,

0:03:39 > 0:03:40except there's no raving.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43We don't spend enough time together as a family at all.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47Amanda's a teacher and Dave works in car manufacturing,

0:03:47 > 0:03:48but his constant shift patterns

0:03:48 > 0:03:51have taken their toll on family life.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54We spend at most an hour together in the morning,

0:03:54 > 0:03:57and then I go to work and by the time I come back,

0:03:57 > 0:04:00- you've gone to work.- Yeah.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03And then it's bedtime before Dave comes home.

0:04:03 > 0:04:04I never really get to see him

0:04:04 > 0:04:07except when he takes me to school, or picks me up.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09He works weekends as well.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12So out of three weeks we have one week together,

0:04:12 > 0:04:14which I would say is family time.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17Desperate for more, Amanda believes their life

0:04:17 > 0:04:20would be vastly improved by moving down under.

0:04:20 > 0:04:21I know it seems a bit extreme

0:04:21 > 0:04:24to move to the other side of the world to make change,

0:04:24 > 0:04:26but I don't want to get to 70 and go,

0:04:26 > 0:04:29"Oh, we only sort of saw each other for 35 of those years."

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Because that's what it is like the moment.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Dave's used to her talking about emigrating.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37Amanda's always wanted to go to Australia,

0:04:37 > 0:04:39ever since we've been together.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Inspired by friends already living the dream,

0:04:42 > 0:04:45she's convinced the country offers everything they need.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Keeping in touch with them, it's kind of gone, "Yeah, I want that."

0:04:48 > 0:04:53The weather, jobs, family life, be by the sea.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Definitely, Australia.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57But Dave doesn't share the vision.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01It's a pipe dream. I've said before, it's like Amanda's little bubble.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04Having worked hard to provide a stable family life in the UK,

0:05:04 > 0:05:06he's reluctant to gamble everything

0:05:06 > 0:05:09on a country he's never even been to.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11I want to say yes, but it's Amanda's dream.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15But there's something up here and I don't know what it is, saying no.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18And it's not just Dave questioning the move.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21Amanda's dream has split the family down the middle.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23There's like a balancing scale at the moment,

0:05:23 > 0:05:25there's me and Naomi on one side.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28I really do want to move to Australia.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31And then there's Dave and Morgan on the other side.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34I really don't want to move to Australia, at all.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36They're very, very different in their opinions

0:05:36 > 0:05:39about moving to Australia.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43But, ultimately, we're doing it for the greater good for all of us

0:05:43 > 0:05:45and not just one of us.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47Dave's agreed to a trial week

0:05:47 > 0:05:50and Amanda knows everything will have to fall into place,

0:05:50 > 0:05:52or a move's a nonstarter.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54The big concern for Dave would be work.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57If it's not there, it's not going to give you the lifestyle

0:05:57 > 0:06:00and if the lifestyle's not there, there's no point moving.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Amanda's also aware getting the life she dreams of

0:06:02 > 0:06:07will come at a huge cost as moving would mean leaving her ailing mum.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12She's been really poorly and I think within the last two years,

0:06:12 > 0:06:14- we've been told about ten times... - Yeah.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17..that, you know...

0:06:17 > 0:06:21- Come and say goodbye, sort of thing. - Yeah.- All right?

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Dave worries his wife hasn't thought things through.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31It will be hard for Amanda to say goodbye to her mum.

0:06:31 > 0:06:32She's lived with her all her life.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35But Amanda's resolute it's now or never.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38We're going to get to an age where it's not possible for us to go

0:06:38 > 0:06:40and it's going to be harder for the children to go

0:06:40 > 0:06:43because they're going to be even older.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47And, sometimes, you just have to look at where we are going

0:06:47 > 0:06:49and I don't want a life of regrets.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Never having set foot in Australia,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55the family now face a week to decide, once and for all,

0:06:55 > 0:06:56where their future lies.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59Being out there could totally change me mind and I could be,

0:06:59 > 0:07:01"Yeah, let's just do it."

0:07:01 > 0:07:03Or it could be, actually, no.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07If we go to Australia this week and it doesn't work out, is that it?

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Is the Australia dream over?

0:07:10 > 0:07:11Yeah.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22The Lancelotts are spending their trial week in Queensland.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25Home to over four and a half million people,

0:07:25 > 0:07:27it's the second largest state in Australia

0:07:27 > 0:07:29and the third most populated area.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32The final leg of the family's journey takes them

0:07:32 > 0:07:34to the suburb of Mudgeeraba,

0:07:34 > 0:07:3750 miles south of Brisbane on the Gold Coast.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39This two-bedroom property is home for the week,

0:07:39 > 0:07:42so what will they make of it?

0:07:42 > 0:07:44From the outside, not my property.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Not much by the sounds of it.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Don't judge a book by its cover, as they say.

0:07:50 > 0:07:51Come on then, let's have a look.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53That's more like it!

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Ah, what do you think to that? Totally different now, isn't it?

0:07:56 > 0:07:58- Whoa! - Not what you expected?

0:07:58 > 0:08:00No.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02- I like that.- Same.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Amanda's gone quiet.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08I don't like it, because it's so dark outside with the bushes

0:08:08 > 0:08:11that it makes it feel dark inside

0:08:11 > 0:08:13and the kitchen isn't a kitchen.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16I would not give up my house in the UK for this, no.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19It's not quite the start she was hoping for.

0:08:19 > 0:08:20As a dream, really,

0:08:20 > 0:08:23it's got to live up to all the expectations

0:08:23 > 0:08:26that I need it to be in order for it to be a realistic dream

0:08:26 > 0:08:28and not a pipe dream.

0:08:28 > 0:08:33Even if the houses, the jobs, the weather, everything fell into place,

0:08:33 > 0:08:37I don't know whether I can still say, "Yes, I definitely want to go."

0:08:37 > 0:08:38We'll see at the end of the week.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40I will never talk to you again if you say no.

0:08:42 > 0:08:43This week needs to show us

0:08:43 > 0:08:46that we'll have a lot more family time together.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48Is that what you want, is it?

0:08:48 > 0:08:51- OK. We'll see then, won't we? - Yeah?- Yeah?

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Things will need to improve in the next few days

0:08:54 > 0:08:58if Amanda's vision for the future's ever to become a reality.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04Back in the UK, home for the Lancelotts

0:09:04 > 0:09:06is a three-bedroom semi in Cheshire.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09Nice house but needs a lot of work to it.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11If I'd stayed in the UK I don't think I'd move

0:09:11 > 0:09:13because I don't know where I'd move to.

0:09:13 > 0:09:14- That is as good as this.- Yeah.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17The family have mixed opinions

0:09:17 > 0:09:19on their aspirations for a home down under.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21Ideally, what I'd like is...

0:09:21 > 0:09:24Amanda's little bubble again.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Quite a bit of land so that we have the facility, if we wanted to,

0:09:30 > 0:09:32to have a pool and horses.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36- Horses.- I do not like horses.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38They're really scary.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41I really, really would like a horse.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44- She wants something she can't have. - Mmm...

0:09:44 > 0:09:48Opinions are also divided on what style of house they're looking for.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51I like lots of space and things nice and tidy

0:09:51 > 0:09:55but you just like clutter and olde worlde.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58One thing they agree on, though, is a decent sized kitchen.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00We spend a lot of time as a family in the kitchen

0:10:00 > 0:10:03because our time together is limited,

0:10:03 > 0:10:07so it tends to be around dinner time, doesn't it?

0:10:07 > 0:10:08Everyone sits around the table.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12If they do move they'd be looking to spend a maximum of £300,000

0:10:12 > 0:10:14on an Australian property.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16I don't want to overstretch our budget

0:10:16 > 0:10:18because the whole point of us going

0:10:18 > 0:10:21is that we have a better lifestyle together.

0:10:23 > 0:10:24To give the family an idea

0:10:24 > 0:10:27of what their money could buy on the Gold Coast,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29we're showing them three properties.

0:10:29 > 0:10:30Two close to budget

0:10:30 > 0:10:34and one which should be everything they're looking for in a dream home.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37House-hunting begins in Cedar Creek.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Just a half-hour drive south of Brisbane,

0:10:39 > 0:10:43this suburb has a semirural feel and with plenty of open fields,

0:10:43 > 0:10:46there's lots of opportunities for horse riding,

0:10:46 > 0:10:48which should please at least half the family.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51What will they make of this wood-clad Aussie home?

0:10:51 > 0:10:53That is nice.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56All that view. Smiling now.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59First impressions are good.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01- Love that door.- It's nice.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04That's nice. I'm worried.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07- That's nice.- That's nice.

0:11:09 > 0:11:10- That's nice.- That's nice.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12- I like that.- That's really nice.

0:11:12 > 0:11:16- That's nice, isn't it? - I think they like it!

0:11:16 > 0:11:19You could just move straight in and you wouldn't have to touch a thing.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22Dave's matter-of-fact about the sleeping quarters.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25It's got a bed and wardrobe, what more do you want?

0:11:25 > 0:11:26Right. This will be...

0:11:27 > 0:11:29..bedroom number two.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Same size as next door.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34See if you can find another one.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36At the moment, there's only two beds.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39The kitchen's just what they were hoping for.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Nice and bright and airy.

0:11:41 > 0:11:43Love the sink. Cooker.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45- Yeah.- Wine rack.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Nice views outside, you've got a decking area, as well,

0:11:48 > 0:11:50straight out there.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52The garden's got all the space they need.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Sit out here in the morning, plenty of land there, isn't there?

0:11:55 > 0:11:57There is. Very.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Horses. Could easily have a paddock, couldn't you?

0:12:00 > 0:12:01Yeah, easily.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03I'm happy about this now.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05See what's down there?

0:12:05 > 0:12:07- Oh, a stable.- The only problem is...

0:12:07 > 0:12:09- Two bedrooms. - There's only two bedrooms.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11- I don't mind sharing a room with her.- I do.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14I'd just sleep with the horse.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16The property may be short on space indoors

0:12:16 > 0:12:19but outdoors just goes on and on.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Oh, my gosh!

0:12:21 > 0:12:24So nice!

0:12:24 > 0:12:25Pool, Jacuzzi.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29Barbecue. This is the reason that you'd have a smaller bedroom.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32You'd actually would only sleep in it.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Horses, land, pool, entertaining area.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37What more do you need?

0:12:37 > 0:12:40The house is very nearly a perfect fit for the Lancelotts

0:12:40 > 0:12:45but will the price measure up to their £300,000 budget?

0:12:45 > 0:12:46How much do you think it's worth?

0:12:46 > 0:12:52I think it's worth, English pounds, about 325,000.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54280, I reckon.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56I'm not good with money so I'm not going to guess.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58I don't know, I really don't.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00- I don't want to guess.- Go on!

0:13:00 > 0:13:02No!

0:13:02 > 0:13:03Spoilsport!

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- Turn it over.- Three, two, one...

0:13:06 > 0:13:08I was closest.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10Oh, my gosh.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14Just over £2,500 under budget.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17£297,400.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19That's really good.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21I don't know. For me, not enough bedrooms in the layout.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25- Still in the budget.- We'll see. - We'll see.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27Ready to go and see what the next one holds?

0:13:27 > 0:13:28Come on, then.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31Next up is the suburb of Tamborine.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Nestled in the Gold Coast hinterland,

0:13:33 > 0:13:35this area is surrounded by natural beauty

0:13:35 > 0:13:39and its village feel should appeal to the Lancelotts.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42Will this five-bedroom Queenslander house work its charm?

0:13:42 > 0:13:44- Yeah, like that.- You're liking that?

0:13:44 > 0:13:46Very quaint.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49Bit more like where we live.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Not everyone's impressed, though.

0:13:51 > 0:13:52- Do you not like it?- No.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Why? No room for a horse.

0:13:55 > 0:13:56- Porch.- That's nice.

0:13:57 > 0:14:02- Size of that. Now that's open plan. - A bit dark.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Just in the door and Amanda's already giving it the thumbs down.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08The ceilings are quite low.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09You'd constantly need the lights on.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12The kitchen's not what they're used to.

0:14:12 > 0:14:13It is small, though, isn't it?

0:14:13 > 0:14:15Yeah, it needs updating as well.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18- At the moment, our kitchen's like the hub of the home.- Yeah.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20This wouldn't be the hub of the home.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22But, elsewhere, things start to look up.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24Yeah, I like this, nice size bedroom.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27I think it needs a bit of life put back into it.

0:14:29 > 0:14:30Good-sized bathroom.

0:14:30 > 0:14:31What's with the bath?

0:14:33 > 0:14:37With five bedrooms, the family are spoiled for choice.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41- Fifth room.- Bedroom number five.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43All five bedrooms are good size, good storage.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45It doesn't care if you had 20 bedrooms,

0:14:45 > 0:14:46you're not feeling it, are you?

0:14:46 > 0:14:48No, not at all.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51And things don't improve outside.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53There's no wow factor in this one

0:14:53 > 0:14:55but if I had to toss a coin between the two houses,

0:14:55 > 0:14:56- the other house would win.- Yes!

0:14:56 > 0:14:58But still wouldn't mean I'd move.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02The property has fallen short of the family's idea of an Aussie home.

0:15:02 > 0:15:06We'd just have to spend way too much money on this house to make it...

0:15:06 > 0:15:08What you want.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11But how close will it come to their £300,000 budget?

0:15:11 > 0:15:14What do you think it's worth? More or less than the other house?

0:15:14 > 0:15:19- Less.- If it's not less, we're in trouble.

0:15:19 > 0:15:222...75.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24No, less than that.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30Three, two, one...

0:15:31 > 0:15:34It's just under budget but Amanda's not impressed.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38I would not pay that for this house.

0:15:38 > 0:15:39No. That is a surprise.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41I'd have the other one hands down.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44- High five!- Doesn't mean I would.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46I will high-five you.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49Still got one more to see yet.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51So, shall we see what that one brings?

0:15:51 > 0:15:53The final property will have to deliver

0:15:53 > 0:15:57if Amanda's dream's to get off the starting blocks.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59It's in the suburb of Worongary,

0:15:59 > 0:16:01surrounded by natural bush and lush greenery,

0:16:01 > 0:16:04it's one of the Gold Coast's hidden gems.

0:16:04 > 0:16:05I like it round here.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07- It's nice, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11Will this four-bedroom, three-bathroom property

0:16:11 > 0:16:12win everyone over?

0:16:12 > 0:16:13Looks good from the outside.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15Very, very nice.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18- Yes.- This is nice, Mand.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21This is definitely going to be your dream house, isn't it?

0:16:21 > 0:16:23- Would you live here?- Yeah.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25See, the dark side's getting to the light side now.

0:16:25 > 0:16:29It just flows right through, doesn't it?

0:16:29 > 0:16:32Not too big and not too small, so it's just right for us.

0:16:32 > 0:16:33Ticking some boxes so far.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37The only box it won't tick is the price, that's the problem.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39- We'll see.- Come on, then. - Let's have a look.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41This time the kitchen doesn't disappoint.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44It's similar size to ours.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46And the girls seem happy with the bedrooms.

0:16:46 > 0:16:47That's a nice size.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49Ideal for one of you two, wouldn't it?

0:16:49 > 0:16:50- Yeah.- Who'd want this one?

0:16:52 > 0:16:55Until they see mum and dad's, that is.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57- No way! It's massive! - We could exchange.

0:16:57 > 0:17:02- Walk...!- Ha-ha-ha!- That's a walk-in wardrobe!- Mum's happy!

0:17:02 > 0:17:04No! I want this room!

0:17:04 > 0:17:07I'm only coming if this is my room.

0:17:07 > 0:17:11Yeah, I can imagine myself sleeping there, walking outside there.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13Looks like Dave's sold.

0:17:13 > 0:17:15Leads straight outside to this.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17A pool!

0:17:17 > 0:17:19Get up in the morning, straight in that,

0:17:19 > 0:17:21down the other end, straight to work.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23What - in your Speedos, Dave?!

0:17:23 > 0:17:25The whole family seem captivated.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28Yeah, no, I like it.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30- Liking it?- Mmm-hmm.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32It's really, really, really nice.

0:17:32 > 0:17:37I could see us living here and just spending a bit more family time.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39And there's still more to see.

0:17:39 > 0:17:44Yeah, nice barbecue, nice big table, a little bit of garden.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47Not too overlooked with all the trees, either.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49- It's nice.- Man cave!

0:17:49 > 0:17:52The converted annexe leads to a difference of taste.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Hello, could I have a cup of tea please?

0:17:54 > 0:17:56No, a beer!

0:17:56 > 0:18:01And no prizes for guessing how the extra land could be put to use.

0:18:01 > 0:18:02Space for the horse!

0:18:02 > 0:18:04But we're still not having a horse.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07Shh! You're ruining my moment!

0:18:07 > 0:18:10It's just got everything that we wished for.

0:18:10 > 0:18:11- And more.- And more!

0:18:11 > 0:18:15It's ticked every box, but when it comes to the price,

0:18:15 > 0:18:17will their dream home get the chop?

0:18:17 > 0:18:19The family's budget is £300,000.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23I hope it's like 500, so we don't move.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25- Shall we see?- Yeah.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Go on, go, let's do it!

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Oh, my gosh!

0:18:35 > 0:18:36Told you!

0:18:36 > 0:18:39That's almost 50% over budget.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Sorry love, you ain't moving here.

0:18:41 > 0:18:42Yes!

0:18:42 > 0:18:46Wow! That's, like, way over budget, isn't it?

0:18:46 > 0:18:47Well, you do the sums, not me.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49Still got the first one.

0:18:49 > 0:18:50Still the first one.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52House-hunting could've seen Dave begin to waver

0:18:52 > 0:18:54when it comes to living down under.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57House number one was just one bedroom short

0:18:57 > 0:18:59of being a practically perfect pad.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01Although under budget,

0:19:01 > 0:19:04the second property's dark interiors disappointed.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07The final house had it all, both inside and out,

0:19:07 > 0:19:11but, unfortunately, a hefty price tag, too.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13So when it comes to Aussie homes,

0:19:13 > 0:19:16will the family vote for the UK, or down under?

0:19:17 > 0:19:20Based on what we've seen today our vote goes to...

0:19:33 > 0:19:34- Australia.- Undecided.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40I thought you'd choose UK, so I'm very surprised you chose undecided.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42There's only one that I really like

0:19:42 > 0:19:44and I don't know if I'd change our home for that one.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48It's got to be undecided because...not all ticked my boxes.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52I picked Australia because,

0:19:52 > 0:19:55even though this one we couldn't afford,

0:19:55 > 0:19:57it's still got everything that we wanted,

0:19:57 > 0:20:01and if Mum and Dad get really good jobs,

0:20:01 > 0:20:03they could eventually afford this.

0:20:03 > 0:20:08Both the first house and this house, for me, tick all my boxes,

0:20:08 > 0:20:11except price on this one.

0:20:11 > 0:20:12But...

0:20:13 > 0:20:15You know... Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

0:20:22 > 0:20:25Amanda's trying to look on the bright side,

0:20:25 > 0:20:27but with Dave and Morgan voting undecided,

0:20:27 > 0:20:30she's got an uphill climb ahead.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33Securing the right jobs down under for both her and Dave

0:20:33 > 0:20:35is now more crucial than ever,

0:20:35 > 0:20:38if she's to achieve the family time she's yearning for.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42Back home, Amanda's a primary school teacher.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44I absolutely love my job.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48You go in and each day is different from the day before.

0:20:48 > 0:20:52It's a role she won't contemplate changing.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55If I moved Australia, I don't want to do anything different.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58Dave's a production operative in the car industry...

0:20:58 > 0:21:02I drive the cranes, I put panels in the rack.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05He's been with the same company for 18 years.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08Basically, that's all I know.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12You get an age where you can't really retrain as anything.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16..and worries if he leaves, the door would be shut for good.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18It's hard enough to get into a place like that.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20I wouldn't have a job to come back to,

0:21:20 > 0:21:22so that would be a big concern of mine.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24If we don't get the jobs between us,

0:21:24 > 0:21:28and get the money between us, for me, we wouldn't be going.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32While the girls take time out, mum and dad set off to explore

0:21:32 > 0:21:36what opportunities could await them on the Gold Coast.

0:21:36 > 0:21:37First up, we've arranged for Dave

0:21:37 > 0:21:41to visit one of the biggest bus manufacturers in Australia.

0:21:42 > 0:21:46He's met by expat general manager Mark Cleave.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48- Hi, Mark, how's it going? - All right, Dave? Nice to you.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51That's a double-decker CDI, a product we do.

0:21:51 > 0:21:55- I'll show you up the line and we can have a look at the next stage.- Yeah.

0:21:55 > 0:21:59Dave's anxious to know how he'd fit into a company like this.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01To transfer your skills from the car industry

0:22:01 > 0:22:04to the bus industry, it would be very smooth, I think.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06It's just a big box on wheels, just a bigger car, really.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08- Yeah. - I don't think you'd have an issue.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10It's a good start.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Back home Dave's shifts mean little time for family,

0:22:13 > 0:22:15so would his work/life balance improve here?

0:22:15 > 0:22:19It's the Gold Coast, so we only do a basic early shift.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22So it's six o'clock in the morning until 2.30 in the afternoon.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24On a Friday we offer them to leave at 12 o'clock.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27The hours you just said then suit me down to the ground,

0:22:27 > 0:22:31compared to what I'm doing at home now, with days, afternoons, nights,

0:22:31 > 0:22:34finishing at half two, be able to get the kids, brilliant.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37Take them to the beach and do family stuff.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41As soon as that bell goes at half two, it's like a race out the door!

0:22:41 > 0:22:44So what would Dave's chances be of getting a job here?

0:22:44 > 0:22:46I can't see any reason why we wouldn't be interested

0:22:46 > 0:22:48in taking you on.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50There's certainly the opportunity for full-time work.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52Great result. Last question...

0:22:52 > 0:22:54What would the wages be for somewhere like this?

0:22:54 > 0:22:58You'd probably be looking between 55-65,000 a year.

0:22:58 > 0:23:0460,000 Australian dollars equates to approximately 34,000 British pounds.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08That's £5,000 more than Dave currently earns in the UK.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10I like the sound of that.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13An increase in salary and more sociable hours.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16Could this be a potential turning point for Dave?

0:23:17 > 0:23:21I am probably moving towards the side of moving to Australia,

0:23:21 > 0:23:23only because this was my main concern.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25That's Dave reassured.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29Meanwhile, across town, Amanda's visiting Saint Stephen's College,

0:23:29 > 0:23:32to find out what her job prospects might be.

0:23:32 > 0:23:35Jane Howe, director of community relations, shows her around.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37Welcome to Saint Stephen's college.

0:23:37 > 0:23:38Thank you. Thank you for having me.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41So, this is our team projects area.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44The chairs as well, they're wobbling chairs.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48That is to enable them to get their brain going as well.

0:23:48 > 0:23:49So the cognitive learning,

0:23:49 > 0:23:52is that something that takes place within the classroom as well?

0:23:52 > 0:23:54Yes, yeah, definitely.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57Jane introduces Amanda to two UK teachers

0:23:57 > 0:23:59who've already made the move.

0:23:59 > 0:24:00Christine and Tracy, this is Amanda.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03- Nice to me you.- I'm Christine, nice to meet you.

0:24:03 > 0:24:04- Hi, Amanda.- Welcome.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07Back home, Amanda often burns the midnight oil

0:24:07 > 0:24:09to cope with her heavy workload.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12She's hoping things are done differently down under.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14I don't take anywhere near as much home

0:24:14 > 0:24:16as I did when I worked in the UK.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19In the UK, I was working 60 or 70 hour week, which was unsustainable,

0:24:19 > 0:24:22whereas, here, I'm able to manage my workload a lot better.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25The support that we get is just phenomenal.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27I love the way things are done.

0:24:27 > 0:24:28There was a reason I moved here

0:24:28 > 0:24:30- and it wasn't work all day and all night.- Absolutely.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32It was to play on the beach.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34Sounds good. Amanda's not done yet, though.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36How likely do you think it would be

0:24:36 > 0:24:38for me to secure employment in Australia?

0:24:38 > 0:24:41If you get your visa or when you get your visa, you come out,

0:24:41 > 0:24:44put your names down for relief work in as many schools as you can.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47Get your face out there, and then,

0:24:47 > 0:24:49with any luck you might be offered that contract.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53If somebody's on maternity leave, or long service leave, or whatever,

0:24:53 > 0:24:58and then hopefully that will lead you to a permanent position.

0:24:58 > 0:25:02Starting down under as a temp wasn't exactly what Amanda had in mind,

0:25:02 > 0:25:04but could the money lift her spirits?

0:25:04 > 0:25:07So it could be between 50-53,000,

0:25:07 > 0:25:10and then it could go up anywhere, up to 80,000.

0:25:10 > 0:25:14That's similar to Amanda's current salary in the UK,

0:25:14 > 0:25:16but Tracy has some encouraging news.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19If schools really want you,

0:25:19 > 0:25:23they may offer you a higher grade than you're actually qualified at.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25It's reassuring, but it's not enough.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28It's like going back to the beginning,

0:25:28 > 0:25:30finding employment in the UK,

0:25:30 > 0:25:35and I don't think, at the moment, I'd put my family through that risk.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38I'm not sure yet. I think a lot depends on how Dave gets on today.

0:25:38 > 0:25:42When the family meet up at the end of the day,

0:25:42 > 0:25:45Amanda's encouraged by Dave's news.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47- How did you get on?- Yeah, good. Yeah, enjoyed it.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50The skills I've got would transfer over quite easily.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52I'd be at the top end of the pay scale,

0:25:52 > 0:25:55but the hours are from six till half two.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57That would be really good.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59You know, we could all have a life.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Could pick you up from school every day and then we can go...

0:26:01 > 0:26:04Do something at the beach, go to the park, surfing.

0:26:05 > 0:26:06Horse riding.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12So when it comes to the vote, will Dave's positive outcome

0:26:12 > 0:26:14be enough to outweigh Amanda's concerns?

0:26:14 > 0:26:17Based on today's work experiences, our vote goes to...

0:26:27 > 0:26:28- Australia.- Undecided.

0:26:30 > 0:26:31In regards to getting a job,

0:26:31 > 0:26:34it's like starting at the beginning again,

0:26:34 > 0:26:37scrabbling with everyone else to get that first job.

0:26:37 > 0:26:38So I'm just voting on mine.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42If I was voting on yours and mine it might be a different answer,

0:26:42 > 0:26:44because you haven't got what you wanted.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47- So, it's got pros and cons, hasn't it?- Yeah.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58Disappointing work prospects have left Amanda questioning the move,

0:26:58 > 0:27:01but Dave's first vote for Australia

0:27:01 > 0:27:04suggests he's beginning to entertain the idea.

0:27:04 > 0:27:09With a desire for more family time together fuelling Amanda's dream,

0:27:09 > 0:27:11hopefully, a day out Aussie-style

0:27:11 > 0:27:16will help get everyone excited about a potential lifestyle down under.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19The family are spending their day

0:27:19 > 0:27:21at one of the many Gold Coast National Parks.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23It is nice, though, isn't it?

0:27:23 > 0:27:25Nice and peaceful.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27Oh, look, some water.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31After a stroll around, it's time for a cooling dip in the falls.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33Ow!

0:27:33 > 0:27:34Watch out, mum.

0:27:34 > 0:27:35It's freezing!

0:27:35 > 0:27:36Cold.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39That's freezing. Don't you dare!

0:27:39 > 0:27:43- No, no!- No, don't you dare.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47When they eventually pluck up the courage, they have a splashing time.

0:27:48 > 0:27:49Ooh! I've got to get out.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53Three, two, one, go!

0:27:54 > 0:27:55SHE SHRIEKS

0:27:59 > 0:28:02Time out as a family is what a move's all about.

0:28:02 > 0:28:06I really enjoyed today. It's been nice to be together.

0:28:06 > 0:28:09Me going down the slide of rocks, it was really...

0:28:09 > 0:28:13It's been good. This is what I expected of Australia.

0:28:13 > 0:28:15It means loads to me, watching them all together.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18Seeing them doing this is brilliant, because, at the end of the day,

0:28:18 > 0:28:20another ten years' time they're going to be old enough,

0:28:20 > 0:28:22leaving home sort of thing, so, you know,

0:28:22 > 0:28:24you want to get the most of this now, while you can.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27Despite disappointing news on the work front,

0:28:27 > 0:28:31Amanda's feeling positive about the week so far.

0:28:31 > 0:28:34I think the move overall is looking quite good.

0:28:34 > 0:28:37I'm feeling a bit more positive about it now.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39You don't know these things till you try it.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42Now he's actually come here and experienced everything,

0:28:42 > 0:28:45I think he's getting towards saying

0:28:45 > 0:28:47he wants to move at the end of the week.

0:28:47 > 0:28:50But Amanda knows she's not out of the woods yet.

0:28:50 > 0:28:53I think Morgan still needs quite a bit of convincing.

0:28:55 > 0:28:56Don't know...

0:28:56 > 0:28:59Thoughts of home are also preying on her mind.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02If something happened to mum, I couldn't be there.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05Now it's like "I'll see you in a day, a day and a half."

0:29:05 > 0:29:09She might find it harder than what she thinks, about leaving her mum.

0:29:09 > 0:29:13But she's still convinced a move's the best way forward.

0:29:13 > 0:29:14I think, for us,

0:29:14 > 0:29:17we've got to kind of look at it for the four of us

0:29:17 > 0:29:19and make a decision for us as a family,

0:29:19 > 0:29:24rather than for everybody else.

0:29:24 > 0:29:28For now, though, when it comes to lifestyle, will it be home or away?

0:29:28 > 0:29:32We've all enjoyed our day today swimming in the waterfalls,

0:29:32 > 0:29:33and based on our lifestyle experience,

0:29:33 > 0:29:35we're going to vote for...

0:29:49 > 0:29:53- Australia.- Australia. - Australia.- Undecided.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56I picked undecided because I don't know whether I can do this or not.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00- OK.- We can do a lot more with better weather,

0:30:00 > 0:30:03so I think you can't get that in England.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06It's Easter. Back at home, you couldn't be outside

0:30:06 > 0:30:08in shorts and flip-flops at Easter, could you?

0:30:08 > 0:30:11This is the lifestyle I dream about,

0:30:11 > 0:30:14more for the girls than anything else,

0:30:14 > 0:30:18that they've got the freedom to go and do what they want to do

0:30:18 > 0:30:22and not be restricted by anything.

0:30:29 > 0:30:31With Morgan's second undecided vote,

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Amanda's still got some way to go for a move to be a done deal.

0:30:35 > 0:30:39Back in the UK, both girls are passionate about karate.

0:30:39 > 0:30:43Perhaps a visit to a local dojo might help win Morgan over.

0:30:43 > 0:30:45Have you guys been to tournaments?

0:30:45 > 0:30:48Yeah, we've been to nationals and regionals.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51Ah, wow, that's really cool.

0:30:51 > 0:30:54I won last year at my fighting and then I won...

0:30:55 > 0:30:58I think it was two or three years before that.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01I came second in regionals last year.

0:31:01 > 0:31:06While the girls talk shop, Mum and Dad hook up with expat parent Paul.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08We've been here five and a half years now

0:31:08 > 0:31:11and I couldn't see us ever going back home.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13The lifestyle is just fantastic.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16What did you find the hardest thing, coming over?

0:31:16 > 0:31:18Family and friends. It's really tough.

0:31:18 > 0:31:21You don't know if you're going to see them again.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24That's probably the toughest thing. It's a big sacrifice.

0:31:25 > 0:31:27It looks like the karate kids

0:31:27 > 0:31:30are punching well above their weight.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37Could you see yourselves doing this?

0:31:37 > 0:31:38- Yeah, I could.- Yeah.

0:31:38 > 0:31:40You could?

0:31:40 > 0:31:43Probably, yeah. Could this be a turning point for Morgan?

0:31:43 > 0:31:47It does make me feel better that we can make friends easily here.

0:31:48 > 0:31:50Whoo!

0:31:50 > 0:31:53As long as we still get to carry on doing the same things,

0:31:53 > 0:31:56it doesn't really matter where or who you're with,

0:31:56 > 0:31:58as long as we still get to do them.

0:31:58 > 0:32:03It's really important for the girls to continue with activities

0:32:03 > 0:32:04that they do at home

0:32:04 > 0:32:07and I think it's the first time I've seen Morgan smile

0:32:07 > 0:32:08since we've been here.

0:32:08 > 0:32:12To see your children happy is the most important thing and

0:32:12 > 0:32:16to see that side of Morgan come back out again, it's been lovely.

0:32:24 > 0:32:26With Dave and Morgan swaying towards a move,

0:32:26 > 0:32:29it looks like Amanda's dream could be inching closer

0:32:29 > 0:32:31but will it prove affordable?

0:32:32 > 0:32:35Getting the right price for their home in the UK

0:32:35 > 0:32:36would be a good start.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39Dave and Amanda think it's worth £250,000.

0:32:39 > 0:32:43We sent two local estate agents round to see if they're right.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47Right, so, here we have the living room.

0:32:47 > 0:32:50It a bright room, breezy, it's got the bay windows,

0:32:50 > 0:32:55but I would like it to be a bit bigger for the size of the house.

0:32:55 > 0:32:56Aah!

0:32:56 > 0:32:58- The doggy.- Esme in the corner!

0:33:00 > 0:33:03OK, a nice sized room, nice dimensions.

0:33:03 > 0:33:06Looking out over open countryside at the rear, which is very attractive.

0:33:06 > 0:33:08A very nice room indeed.

0:33:11 > 0:33:15Right, so, here we have the kitchen which is the main family room,

0:33:15 > 0:33:16in my opinion.

0:33:16 > 0:33:17It's quite spacious.

0:33:17 > 0:33:19Modern worktops.

0:33:19 > 0:33:21True, it is the hub of the house, really, isn't it?

0:33:21 > 0:33:23It's what we use, don't we?

0:33:23 > 0:33:24In today's current market,

0:33:24 > 0:33:27I'd put it on the market for between 200 and £220,000.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30£200,000 for a quick sale.

0:33:30 > 0:33:31That was a bit less.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35I feel in this marketplace, that it could achieve,

0:33:35 > 0:33:38the marketing value would be in the region of £200,000.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41For a quicker sale, obviously,

0:33:41 > 0:33:43I'd value it a bit lower at 190, 195.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48The valuation is less than what we expected, isn't it?

0:33:48 > 0:33:52Oh, yeah. But we know the houses have sold,

0:33:52 > 0:33:55houses very similar to ours have sold for more than that.

0:33:55 > 0:33:57- Yeah.- It wouldn't stop you anyway, would it?

0:33:57 > 0:33:59It wouldn't stop me, no.

0:33:59 > 0:34:00So, there you go.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04With Amanda undaunted by the disappointing estimates,

0:34:04 > 0:34:08the couple move on to examine the everyday cost of living.

0:34:08 > 0:34:10- Here's the important bit. - Yeah.

0:34:10 > 0:34:14We've provided a comparison between the UK and Australia.

0:34:14 > 0:34:17First up, a look at the weekly shopping bill.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19Garlic bread is about...

0:34:20 > 0:34:21..70p dearer.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23Yeah, that's OK.

0:34:23 > 0:34:27Pizza for Morgan, well, she's not be going to be eating pizza any more.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30That's, like, £1.80 more.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32Chicken, we use a lot of, it's double.

0:34:32 > 0:34:36- That's double. - Tuna steaks, £8.50 over here.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38It's four times more expensive more or less.

0:34:38 > 0:34:46The Australian shopping bill comes to a grand total of £160.80.

0:34:46 > 0:34:50That's almost double what the family spend on food every week in the UK.

0:34:50 > 0:34:52That's significantly, um,...

0:34:53 > 0:34:55a lot more money.

0:34:55 > 0:34:57And there's the bigger costs to face.

0:34:57 > 0:35:01They based their calculations on the first property they saw.

0:35:01 > 0:35:05Our mortgage at home is £656

0:35:05 > 0:35:08and the Australian mortgage is 1289.

0:35:08 > 0:35:12Once again, it's double what they pay back home.

0:35:12 > 0:35:13The figures don't look good.

0:35:13 > 0:35:17Comparing Australian outgoings to those in the UK,

0:35:17 > 0:35:20the couple discover it would cost them £700 more per month

0:35:20 > 0:35:22to live down under.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24Another sad, crying face.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28- They're tears.- It's £8,000 more a year, which is a lot.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30It is a lot.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33Amanda's dream is becoming a nightmare,

0:35:33 > 0:35:35even though Dave could up his earnings down under,

0:35:35 > 0:35:38it's not enough to balance the books.

0:35:38 > 0:35:42We are worse off by £485 per month.

0:35:42 > 0:35:44Can I still do tears?

0:35:44 > 0:35:47- You need a water... - I need a water fountain.- Yeah.

0:35:48 > 0:35:52On closer inspection, Amanda feels more positive.

0:35:52 > 0:35:54Back in the UK, the couple have a disposable income

0:35:54 > 0:35:57of nearly £1,350 each month.

0:35:57 > 0:36:00In Oz, that would be reduced to £860

0:36:00 > 0:36:05but they'd still have some money left in the bank.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08Minus your 485, potentially,...

0:36:10 > 0:36:13..you've still got that, so 100 quid each week.

0:36:13 > 0:36:17How many cars is that on? One car? One car? We'd need two cars.

0:36:17 > 0:36:19You're cycling. You need to get the bus.

0:36:19 > 0:36:21I wouldn't be able to cycle to work so it's not feasible.

0:36:21 > 0:36:25I think it is. I'm going to put a happy face...

0:36:26 > 0:36:28..with a bit of a sunshine.

0:36:28 > 0:36:31But Dave's just not buying it.

0:36:31 > 0:36:34It's not raining any more. It's pouring down over your cloud now.

0:36:34 > 0:36:38She's given it her best shot but when it comes to the vote,

0:36:38 > 0:36:40will it be enough?

0:36:40 > 0:36:42So, our reality check today showed us a mixed bag of results

0:36:42 > 0:36:45and based on that, we have decided to vote for...

0:36:58 > 0:36:59- Australia.- England.

0:37:00 > 0:37:04I think, based on what I've seen of Australia, not just what's on paper,

0:37:04 > 0:37:08we could make savings, as we do at home,

0:37:08 > 0:37:11so I think that's not all just cut and dried,

0:37:11 > 0:37:13as what you see as black and white on the paper.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16We do need two cars. Everything is so far away.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19I still think we would be worse off in the long run,

0:37:19 > 0:37:23so, for me, it's still a big no on the money side of things.

0:37:30 > 0:37:32Despite Amanda's efforts,

0:37:32 > 0:37:33Dave isn't budging on the budget

0:37:33 > 0:37:36and there's still one more hurdle to overcome.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38The family have agreed to watch

0:37:38 > 0:37:40a DVD of messages from home together.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43Will the thought of leaving loved ones behind

0:37:43 > 0:37:46prove too much to bear, even for Amanda?

0:37:46 > 0:37:47Hello, David, Amanda.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50Hello, girls.

0:37:50 > 0:37:52Hi!

0:37:52 > 0:37:56- Hello!- Hello, Dave and Amanda, and Naomi and Morgan.

0:37:56 > 0:38:00The Lancelotts, as a family, are really competitive.

0:38:04 > 0:38:06They are loving, caring...

0:38:08 > 0:38:10..always happy.

0:38:10 > 0:38:14Dave, it pains to say, he's certainly one in a million.

0:38:14 > 0:38:18If anybody needs any help, he's the first one there.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20He's always been that type of lad.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23Never seen Amanda not to be happy.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26She's my first port of call if I've ever got a problem.

0:38:26 > 0:38:29She's the first person I text, or phone, or go round to.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31Oh, do you know what?

0:38:31 > 0:38:35Naomi and Morgan, they are beautiful inside and out.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39I'd be really sad if she moved. I'd really miss her loads.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41I'd miss the girls.

0:38:41 > 0:38:43For them, the decisions they've got to make is a huge one.

0:38:43 > 0:38:46I couldn't even imagine making that.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49It's quite sad, we're going to miss them like a part of our heart.

0:38:49 > 0:38:54If they went, you'd feel completely lost, completely and utterly lost.

0:38:54 > 0:38:59I will find it extremely hard to say goodbye, but I won't say goodbye.

0:38:59 > 0:39:01It would be a hug and kiss and see you soon.

0:39:01 > 0:39:03We will support you in whatever decision you make,

0:39:03 > 0:39:07whether you decide to move out to Australia or stay here.

0:39:07 > 0:39:12You've got a lot to think about and, if they ever said,

0:39:12 > 0:39:15"We couldn't go because we couldn't leave you,"

0:39:15 > 0:39:16I wouldn't like that.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18No, it's got to be what...

0:39:19 > 0:39:21..the four of them find the best.

0:39:23 > 0:39:25And I just wish them all the best.

0:39:30 > 0:39:33- You're crying. - Has mummy been crying?

0:39:33 > 0:39:36- Yeah.- I think it's just seeing other people upset,

0:39:36 > 0:39:39that kind of puts it into perspective.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41- They'll miss you. - They'll miss you, as well.

0:39:41 > 0:39:43Not that you don't think they would

0:39:43 > 0:39:46but when you see them upset, because you're so close to them,

0:39:46 > 0:39:48you naturally feel that...

0:39:48 > 0:39:50Excuse me... ..that sadness that they feel.

0:39:50 > 0:39:53I'd miss playing with Zach and Elsie.

0:39:53 > 0:39:54- Would you?- Yeah.

0:39:56 > 0:39:58- What about the family? - Definitely.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04Their time in Australia has given the Lancelotts

0:40:04 > 0:40:08a glimpse of what they stand to gain down under,

0:40:08 > 0:40:10but hearing those messages from home

0:40:10 > 0:40:13was a reminder of what they could also be losing out on.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16As the week draws to a close,

0:40:16 > 0:40:20the whole family now face a difficult choice as they decide,

0:40:20 > 0:40:24once and for all, which side of the world their future lies.

0:40:24 > 0:40:28The week has confirmed Amanda and Naomi's conviction

0:40:28 > 0:40:30that down under's where they should be.

0:40:30 > 0:40:32Australia has been what I hoped it would be

0:40:32 > 0:40:37in that the opportunities that it provides for us as a family

0:40:37 > 0:40:39are immense.

0:40:39 > 0:40:42It showed me a lot more than I thought it would

0:40:42 > 0:40:46and...it's just been really fun.

0:40:46 > 0:40:47It's opened Dave and Morgan's eyes

0:40:47 > 0:40:50to the life they could be enjoying, too.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53You probably would get a better lifestyle.

0:40:53 > 0:40:56There is a lot more to do here and, yes, it is a fickle thing,

0:40:56 > 0:40:59but the weather does help.

0:40:59 > 0:41:03The week has shown us that it's easy to adapt to it here

0:41:03 > 0:41:07and we'd get used to the lifestyle and make friends.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09But as the final vote approaches,

0:41:09 > 0:41:12the reality of leaving her mum behind

0:41:12 > 0:41:14has given Amanda pause for thought.

0:41:14 > 0:41:15It's a massive decision.

0:41:15 > 0:41:18We aren't a family of four.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20We're a family of five and I think,

0:41:20 > 0:41:25with moving, you don't just move you as a family,

0:41:25 > 0:41:30we've always got someone else to consider.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33Where the family's future lies still hangs in the balance.

0:41:33 > 0:41:36The whole week has given pros and cons to everything,

0:41:36 > 0:41:39so I wouldn't say I am for it, I wouldn't say I'm against it.

0:41:39 > 0:41:42There's a side of me that doesn't want to go

0:41:42 > 0:41:44and there's a little bit of me that does.

0:41:44 > 0:41:47So, which side of the world will the Lancelotts call home?

0:41:47 > 0:41:51Based on our week in Australia, we're going to vote for...

0:42:06 > 0:42:10- England.- Australia. - Australia.- 50-50.

0:42:10 > 0:42:12Ooooh!

0:42:12 > 0:42:14I think we might have aimed too high.

0:42:14 > 0:42:17If we forget the swimming pool, forget the horse,

0:42:17 > 0:42:18the immaculate house.

0:42:18 > 0:42:20It's things you've got to look at.

0:42:20 > 0:42:21Why Australia, Naomi?

0:42:21 > 0:42:23You knew all along,

0:42:23 > 0:42:24it's going to be Australia for me

0:42:24 > 0:42:27but I just enjoyed having more family time.

0:42:27 > 0:42:29Why do you want to stay in England?

0:42:29 > 0:42:32Why has England got the edge over Australia for you?

0:42:32 > 0:42:34I'll miss everyone. I don't want to go.

0:42:34 > 0:42:35You miss your friends? Yeah?

0:42:35 > 0:42:37Never mind.

0:42:38 > 0:42:42I think although there is reservations,

0:42:42 > 0:42:44I nearly voted undecided,

0:42:44 > 0:42:49I think those barriers, potentially, could be overcome

0:42:49 > 0:42:52to keep the Australian dream alive.

0:42:57 > 0:43:01Unfortunately, their week on the Gold Coast hasn't provided Amanda

0:43:01 > 0:43:03with the breakthrough she was hoping for

0:43:03 > 0:43:07and with the family still split down the middle,

0:43:07 > 0:43:08it looks as if the Lancelotts

0:43:08 > 0:43:13will be continuing to call the UK home, for the time being anyway.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17Wherever their future takes them, we wish them all every happiness.
