0:00:05 > 0:00:08and led to heartbreak as well as happiness,

0:00:08 > 0:00:11you could be yearning for a fresh start.

0:00:11 > 0:00:15But how far would you go to achieve your happy ever after?

0:00:15 > 0:00:20For one couple, it could mean a move to the other side of the world.

0:00:20 > 0:00:24Debbie and Lee Daniels have faced more heartache than most.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28Our lives haven't gone the way we thought it would.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Everyone else around us seems to be getting

0:00:30 > 0:00:32the dream that we haven't got.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Now, the couple are seeking a clean slate in New Zealand.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39I'm really positive. My bags are almost packed and, yeah, I'm here.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43But when confronted with leaving behind everything they love...

0:00:43 > 0:00:47- We can basically throw away all of this.- Now you're getting stroppy.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51Will they stand by the dream or decide home is where the heart is?

0:00:51 > 0:00:55Are we escaping? Are we just running away?

0:01:19 > 0:01:22Famous the world over for it's scenic diversity,

0:01:22 > 0:01:25New Zealand boasts spectacular geographic backdrops,

0:01:25 > 0:01:29from beaches to rainforests and active volcanoes.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32And now after decades of immigration,

0:01:32 > 0:01:35its population is as diverse as the landscape.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38With three quarters of its 4.5 million residents

0:01:38 > 0:01:41of European descent, it seems the sky's the limit

0:01:41 > 0:01:46in the country often referred to as Land Of The Long White Cloud.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Having put life on hold to help her widowed mum bring up

0:01:50 > 0:01:52her two younger sisters,

0:01:52 > 0:01:57Debbie Daniels was delighted when she finally met husband Lee.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59But their happiness was short lived

0:01:59 > 0:02:03when they realised they'd never have a family of their own.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07With Lee's support, Debbie's now ready to put the past to rest

0:02:07 > 0:02:10and believes relocating to New Zealand is the key

0:02:10 > 0:02:14to a happier future. The Daniels now have one week

0:02:14 > 0:02:18to decide whether uprooting to the other side of the world

0:02:18 > 0:02:21really is the right move.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24To reach New Zealand,

0:02:24 > 0:02:28the Daniels spent 24 hours travelling from London via Dubai.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30And while Debbie's made the trek down under before,

0:02:30 > 0:02:33the journey took her a little by surprise.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36When I came here ten years ago, I don't remember the flight

0:02:36 > 0:02:39- being quite so long as it was. - Yeah.- It was hard work.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Husband Lee made the most of his time in the air.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Plenty of food, plenty of drinking. Good films.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48The reality of the week ahead has hit home with Debbie.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Looking out of the window when we were coming in to land.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Oh, where are we going? What are we going to be doing?

0:02:53 > 0:02:55- Yeah. - It's sort of the unknown, really.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59Lee's already convinced they're in New Zealand for the long haul.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01I'm really positive. My bags are almost packed.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05Yeah, I'm here. The new adventure starts today.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09But where their future lies is dependent on the next seven days.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13It's got to be right for both of us.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Back in the UK,

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Debbie and Lee Daniels live in West Sussex

0:03:25 > 0:03:26with their beloved dog Merlin.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28As soon as we saw him, we were like, yep, yep.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31- Fell in love with him straightaway. - That's what we want.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34- We'll have him. We'll have him.- He took to us, as well, which is good.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38The couple met online ten years ago and after a whirlwind romance

0:03:38 > 0:03:41Lee decided the time was right for a very decent proposal.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45I tossed a coin and it was heads or tails whether I did or didn't

0:03:45 > 0:03:48and I kept tossing the coin until I got the yesses that I needed.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52Debbie and Lee were married in 2008

0:03:52 > 0:03:56against the dramatic backdrop of the Arctic Circle in Lapland.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00I got taken by reindeer in a sleigh down to the ice chapel.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04I wore a traditional wedding dress, with a fake fur wrap

0:04:04 > 0:04:06which didn't really keep me that warm.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08And I had cold feet legitimately.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11- Which was good.- Yeah.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13It was magical, it was freezing.

0:04:14 > 0:04:15But I would do it again.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17It was a fairy tale moment for Debbie,

0:04:17 > 0:04:20who'd witnessed real tragedy in her teens.

0:04:20 > 0:04:26When I was 18, my mum and stepdad were in the Purley train crash.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31Unfortunately, my stepdad lost his life and my mum was hospitalised

0:04:31 > 0:04:34for a couple of weeks. Had sort of major surgery.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37With two young sisters left without a father,

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Debbie sacrificed her life as a nanny in London

0:04:39 > 0:04:41to move home and help out.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47I tried really hard when they were younger to give them as much as I could.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50We did all the days out,

0:04:50 > 0:04:53all the things that they would have done had they had a dad.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55With her sisters all grown up,

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Debbie and Lee's marriage marked an exciting new chapter

0:04:58 > 0:05:02and the couple were delighted when, after failed IVF,

0:05:02 > 0:05:04Debbie fell pregnant naturally.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Sadly, their joy was short-lived.

0:05:06 > 0:05:11Unfortunately, we lost that baby and I had to go in for surgery.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17Managed to get pregnant again a couple of times and each of them...

0:05:18 > 0:05:21..we lost both of those babies as well.

0:05:21 > 0:05:26It was very early on, but obviously they were still very special.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Going to start me off now.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33I'd never even entertained the thought of having children

0:05:33 > 0:05:36and the first time that we fell pregnant,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39it was like I'd won the lottery. It was an amazing feeling.

0:05:39 > 0:05:44And then when it was taken away from us, it was like being just punched.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48A difficult few years followed as the couple faced the fact

0:05:48 > 0:05:51they couldn't have children of their own.

0:05:51 > 0:05:56Our lives haven't gone the way we thought it would.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59You know, we moved into a home that would be a family home.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01We bought a car that would be a family car.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05It's very hard when everyone else around us seems to be getting

0:06:05 > 0:06:07the dream that we haven't got.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13Now, after so much sadness, they're desperate for change

0:06:13 > 0:06:15and a brief visit to the country ten years ago

0:06:15 > 0:06:19has led Debbie to suggest that could be in New Zealand.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23The way of life seems easier, but I think it's just very similar,

0:06:23 > 0:06:25so I don't think it'll be such a culture shock.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28You'll never forget the bad things that have happened in your life,

0:06:28 > 0:06:30they'll always be with you,

0:06:30 > 0:06:33but I think it may well be a distraction.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36New Zealand offers possibly the best of everything, really.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40But while Lee would jump in feet-first,

0:06:40 > 0:06:42Debbie's dragging her heels, which is becoming

0:06:42 > 0:06:44a bit of a sticking point.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49He knows that I'm more worried than he is and he gets a bit

0:06:49 > 0:06:52cross sometimes that I'm looking too much into it, I think.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56Debbie is a lot more tentative than I am.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59She'll want to cross the Ts and dot the Is, basically.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03Topping the list of Debbie's concerns is the thought of giving up

0:07:03 > 0:07:07her role as a play specialist for children at a local hospital.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10I love doing the job I do.

0:07:10 > 0:07:15I give the children 100%, as far as I know.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18More than 100%. When I've been at work and seen you

0:07:18 > 0:07:21with the children it's incredible how you actually can

0:07:21 > 0:07:26interact with them and how they relate to you and vice versa.

0:07:26 > 0:07:27Thank you.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Debbie faces some tough decisions and there's one part of their lives

0:07:30 > 0:07:33she definitely won't leave behind.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37Merlin isn't a replacement for a child, but he is what we've got.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39He is all we have. You know,

0:07:39 > 0:07:42he is ours and he is very special and he knows he is.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45- He's a bit spoiled. - Spoilt rotten.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49After years of heartache, the Daniels now face just seven days

0:07:49 > 0:07:52to discover whether moving to the other side of the world

0:07:52 > 0:07:55really can give them the fresh start they deserve.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58This is a whole life-changing adventure.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02Other than getting married, this is the biggest thing I've ever done.

0:08:02 > 0:08:07And I don't know if I can do it.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20To find out if life really could be better down under,

0:08:20 > 0:08:24the Daniels are visiting Auckland on New Zealand's North Island.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27They're staying in Takapuna,

0:08:27 > 0:08:30a coastal suburb around seven miles from the city centre.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Boasting a beach and stretches of walking trails,

0:08:34 > 0:08:38the air is a haven for people seeking a more relaxed pace to life.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44But what will the couple make of their home for the week?

0:08:44 > 0:08:46- Oh.- Here we go.- Just in this one?

0:08:46 > 0:08:47Here we go.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Oh, God.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51Whoops, it's a bumpy start!

0:08:51 > 0:08:53Oh. Nice little garden.

0:08:53 > 0:08:54- This is ideal.- Yeah.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58Not sure about the sort of gargoyley faces.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Inside, things fare a little better.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02- Oh, my word.- Oh, very nice.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06- Let's leave them there.- Very modern.

0:09:06 > 0:09:07Decent sized telly, as well.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Let's go and explore.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12It doesn't take long before they're feeling at home.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14- Pictures of doggies, reminds us of Merlin.- Yeah.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18And after the long journey, there's only one thing for it.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20- Do you want a cup of tea? - Teabag. I'd love a cup of tea,

0:09:20 > 0:09:24- thank you very much. - Have you found sugar? No.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26Well, once they find what they need.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29- This could take a while. - Aha. Hang on.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31Outside, Lee's already won over.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34This is so peaceful. It's what I want in life, peace and quiet.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Debbie, on the other hand, can't conceal her concerns.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40I mean, I've got more fears than you have.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43I look at the practical side and you're...

0:09:43 > 0:09:46You're just going to jump feet-first, aren't you, really?

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- Finance is the thing that worries me.- Financial security.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51As long as it's no worse in comparison.

0:09:52 > 0:09:53Well, we'll have to see.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05In the UK, the Daniels live in a four-bedroom detached house

0:10:05 > 0:10:07in the village of Angmering in Sussex,

0:10:07 > 0:10:09and it's a place they're proud to call their own.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14It's not a show home. But we don't care about that, do we?

0:10:14 > 0:10:17No. I've always had in my mind the type of home I want to live in.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19This is pretty much it.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22But a new life down under would mean a new house

0:10:22 > 0:10:25and they've dreamt up quite a wish list.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28- A nice outdoor space. - Yeah.- Barbecue area.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Somewhere to put a hot tub, maybe.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33- Cinema room. - We're not asking for much.

0:10:33 > 0:10:34If they do move,

0:10:34 > 0:10:39the couple's budget to buy a house in New Zealand is £350,000.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42I'm hoping, rightly or wrongly,

0:10:42 > 0:10:45that when we walk into the properties out there,

0:10:45 > 0:10:47they have the wow factors.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Today, we'll show Debbie and Lee three properties.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56One of which could be their dream home.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59Only after they've seen each house, will they find out its value.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04The couple are exploring suburbs on Auckland's North Shore,

0:11:04 > 0:11:08a much sought-after area for those wanting coastal living,

0:11:08 > 0:11:11but how far will their money stretch?

0:11:12 > 0:11:15To kick things off, the couple head for Milford.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Despite being only seven miles from the city centre,

0:11:18 > 0:11:22the area has a village feel, and having a beach

0:11:22 > 0:11:25makes it a great fit for dog lovers like the Daniels.

0:11:25 > 0:11:26Oh, this is it.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28So, will this north-facing brick house

0:11:28 > 0:11:31get their search off to a good start?

0:11:31 > 0:11:34- Nice well-kept grass. - Yeah, it's maintainable.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36Hopefully, inside is in good nick, too.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40- OK. Oh, long corridor. - That's nice.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Right, onto the first room.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Fairly small lounge compared to ours.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47- Yeah.- But as long as you can get your telly on the wall.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Yeah, telly can go there.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Now, that's resolved, it's onto the kitchen-dining area.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56- A little bit compact, but... - Adequate.- Yeah.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58I just think we'd have to downsize our furniture.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01But there could be more space than they think.

0:12:01 > 0:12:02Right, into this corridor...

0:12:02 > 0:12:05which does remind me of a Doctor Who...

0:12:05 > 0:12:07Yeah, you could sort of open this door and there'd be...

0:12:07 > 0:12:10- A fantasy world, or... - Yeah, I was thinking more aliens.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12It's not very friendly looking.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Now Debbie's brought them back down to Earth,

0:12:14 > 0:12:16they check out the master bedroom.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20- Yeah, it is.- The whole property's a little bit outdated from what we've

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- seen so far.- It's 40-odd years old, so, yeah, it needs a bit of a...

0:12:23 > 0:12:25A bit of tender love and care.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29Perhaps DIY-loving Lee could give it a spruce up.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32I think you can definitely work on it.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35By the third bedroom, though, Debbie's lost heart.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38There's not a lot to be done. You could move straight in.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40Yeah, I wouldn't move in.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45In the hallway, Lee finds something to cause alarm.

0:12:45 > 0:12:46Look at that electrics!

0:12:46 > 0:12:49I'd have a fit if that was in our house. God!

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Hopefully, outside will give them less cause for concern.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54Oh, look at that, it's grapevine, look.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56We could make our own wine. New Zealand wine.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58I think you need a bit more than those.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00I think the garden is actually the best bit.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05But is it enough to change their view?

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Yeah, too dated, too small.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10It doesn't give you that tingly feeling that I like to get.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13The house hasn't tickled their fancy.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16How much do they think it costs?

0:13:16 > 0:13:18I don't think I'd pay more than about 280.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22Yeah. Sort of looking at £280,000, £300,000 worth.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Are you ready? Go on, then.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30- Good grief!- Yeah.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33£393,000.

0:13:33 > 0:13:34Yikes!

0:13:35 > 0:13:37That's around £40,000 over budget.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40There must be something we don't know, obviously.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43I was going to say. Perhaps you get eternal youth or something

0:13:43 > 0:13:45- from the air. - Based on this price...

0:13:45 > 0:13:48- Yeah.- I don't think we could afford to move.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52- No.- What time's the flight back to the UK?- Yeah.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56It's not the best start, but before Debbie packs her bags,

0:13:56 > 0:13:58there are two more houses to view.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00- Next.- To the next one.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Hopefully the next one will be more to their liking.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07It's situated in Torbay,

0:14:07 > 0:14:11a more rural suburb around 30 miles from central Auckland.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15With several beaches and a regional park on it's doorstep,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18the area can offer the Daniels the leisurely lifestyle they're after.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22Driveway.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25But will this three-bedroom house be enough

0:14:25 > 0:14:27to ward off some of Debbie's doubts?

0:14:27 > 0:14:30- Burglars be warned. - Yeah.- Of what?- Merlin.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Yeah.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34I'm getting my tingle.

0:14:34 > 0:14:35Getting my tingling.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37Definitely a good sign.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41Oh, yeah, that's much better.

0:14:41 > 0:14:42- Much more open.- Yeah, more spacious.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45We could actually get our furniture in this one.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48Yeah, definitely. Well, we'd need a bit more furniture, possibly.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52With more space to play with, will the kitchen get a thumbs up too?

0:14:52 > 0:14:55Certainly a bigger, better kitchen than the previous one.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58To be quite honest, I think I'd remodel the kitchen.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03Hopefully, the master bedroom is more up to spec.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06- Oh, look.- I've spotted something.

0:15:06 > 0:15:07A walk-in wardrobe!

0:15:07 > 0:15:10It's far away from the lounge and everything.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12- Yeah.- So that it can actually be quite peaceful.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14Separate area for if we have an argument.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16Surely not, Lee!

0:15:16 > 0:15:18- Right, shall we have a look in here? - Go on, then.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21- Is this going to be good or bad? - Drumroll for this one.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25Oh, OK.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27Mmm...

0:15:27 > 0:15:29Debbie doesn't sound convinced.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31- Bigger than the one at home. - Oh, yeah, no, it's big.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33It just needs updating.

0:15:35 > 0:15:36Moving outside...

0:15:38 > 0:15:40What we got here? Merlin's area.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42Yeah, I'm not quite sure what it is.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45At least it's an area that's closed off for him to run around in.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47Debbie's not sold.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49But Lee spots something to lighten the mood.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52I haven't seen one of those windmill things for years.

0:15:53 > 0:15:54The old man goes...

0:15:55 > 0:15:58- It's lovely.- Do you like that?

0:15:59 > 0:16:01With the back garden falling short,

0:16:01 > 0:16:04the couple take a closer look at what's out front.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07This is actually nicer, I think, than the other side.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10Yeah, I could quite happily sit out here in the evening.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Tropical plants, as well.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14- Bird of paradise.- Bird of paradise, that's the one.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16I can't remember the Italian name, but...

0:16:16 > 0:16:18Birdio paradiso.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Molto bene, Lee.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23But will the price of the house roll off the tongue as easily?

0:16:24 > 0:16:26I'm going to say 325.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28I'm going to go a lot less than the last property.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31325. OK. 345.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33Time to turn the card.

0:16:35 > 0:16:36SHE GASPS

0:16:36 > 0:16:38£428,000.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43That's almost £80,000 over budget.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47- Nice, but it's not amazing. - It is nice.

0:16:47 > 0:16:52I would rather downsize at home than actually move all this way

0:16:52 > 0:16:53and risk everything.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55Debbie's losing faith.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Can property three get things back on track?

0:17:00 > 0:17:04It looks... The area looks like it's worth the money.

0:17:04 > 0:17:05Because it looks very clean.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07It looks very tidy.

0:17:07 > 0:17:11For the final viewing, the couple head for the area of Forest Hill,

0:17:11 > 0:17:14a popular suburb just eight miles from the city centre.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18Nearby beaches and a park said to be one of Auckland's most popular

0:17:18 > 0:17:21for dog walking make it ideal for the Daniels.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25We think this modern three-bedroom house could be their dream home.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27Question is, will they agree?

0:17:29 > 0:17:32Ah, this looks good. Shall we go and have a peruse?

0:17:32 > 0:17:33Yeah, let's go and have a look.

0:17:37 > 0:17:41- Oh, very nice. - Oh, yes.- Very sort of designerish.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43- Modern.- Oh, yes.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47Yeah. Yeah. I got the same thing when we moved into our house.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49So far, so good.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53- Dining area.- Yeah. We'd still get the table in,

0:17:53 > 0:17:56but then most of the time, you'd be out there.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00This is 100 times better than the other two.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02It is. That also means that the price could be...

0:18:02 > 0:18:04- Yeah.- Could be way up there. - Exactly.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07You know, you fall in love with something that in actual fact...

0:18:07 > 0:18:09You can't afford.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12Cautious, but curious, they check out the kitchen.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15- Very nice.- So it's got a work surface like we have.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18Yeah. It's got little sparkly bits.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Just rejig it a little bit.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23If we wanted like the American fridge freezer, might fit in there.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25Just take out a cupboard.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27Debbie's already redesigning.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29I like that clock. That's well funky.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31The clock comes with the house.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33Buy the clock and the house can be free.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Not sure it works like that, Lee.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- It's the first house that we've actually had to go upstairs. - That's true.

0:18:38 > 0:18:39Things are looking up.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Bedroom. Oh, it's bigger than you think, actually.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45Oh, yeah. I like the funky triangle window.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48Your challenge would be getting a blind for the triangle window.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53Will the bathroom shape up nicely, too?

0:18:53 > 0:18:56Ah, now, that's better. That's proper.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59- It's certainly big, isn't it? - I wouldn't want to change it.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01- It would just be fine.- No, you wouldn't need to change it.- No.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Hopefully, the master bedroom will be to their taste, too.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06This is definitely what we're talking about.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09It's sort of a blank canvas, really, isn't it?

0:19:09 > 0:19:11Oh, and it's got an en-suite.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14Look at the size of it. It's ginormous.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16Yeah, that's mine. There's yours.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18I'll use the main bath. Much better.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21Every box has been ticked so far.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23And there's more to come.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26The added feature of a balcony is sure to impress.

0:19:26 > 0:19:27This is glorious.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Knowing what an impetuous person I am, this would be it.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36The house is a big part, but, yeah,

0:19:36 > 0:19:39the jobs and everything else are also a major part.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42If you tick all the boxes, all the other bits and pieces,

0:19:42 > 0:19:45then this would be the icing on the cake.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48Could the back garden be the cherry on top?

0:19:48 > 0:19:52I can just see us sitting out here with a glass of something or other

0:19:52 > 0:19:55with our dinner and people round the table.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58Property three is proving popular with the Daniels.

0:19:58 > 0:20:03But with £350,000 to spend, can they really afford the dream house?

0:20:03 > 0:20:09Right, I'm going to go for 470.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11That's less than the last one.

0:20:11 > 0:20:12Yeah, but I think different area.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14I'm going to the surprise.

0:20:14 > 0:20:15OK. You ready?

0:20:15 > 0:20:17- Yes.- Sure?

0:20:17 > 0:20:18Yeah.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24- £490,000.- Yay.

0:20:24 > 0:20:29That's almost £150,000 over budget.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Are you going to cry on telly?

0:20:33 > 0:20:36- No.- The reality is, we can't afford houses

0:20:36 > 0:20:38in the areas we're looking in.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41Until it comes to the point when we know how much were going to earn.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43If we're suddenly going to earn double what we earn now,

0:20:43 > 0:20:45then it is achievable.

0:20:45 > 0:20:49Lee's hopeful, but Debbie's feet are staying firmly on the ground.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52It's got to be the whole package, not just the house.

0:20:56 > 0:21:01The reality of New Zealand property prices has been a real eye-opener

0:21:01 > 0:21:04for the Daniels. Property one was only slightly over budget,

0:21:04 > 0:21:07but too cramped and dated for Debbie and Lee.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12The higher price tag of property two meant more space indoors,

0:21:12 > 0:21:14but it fell short outdoors.

0:21:17 > 0:21:21The final property proved the potential dream home for Lee,

0:21:21 > 0:21:25but coming in well over budget put it financially out of reach for now.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30So, based on their day of house-hunting,

0:21:30 > 0:21:33will they opt for New Zealand or the UK?

0:21:42 > 0:21:44- New Zealand!- Undecided.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49I'm surprised that you went undecided.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51I'm not 100% either way, so...

0:21:51 > 0:21:54- Wow. Gosh. - You never know, you never know.

0:22:04 > 0:22:09Could Debbie's undecided vote be a sign of trouble on the horizon

0:22:09 > 0:22:12or will a day exploring employment opportunities give her

0:22:12 > 0:22:16the confidence she needs to pursue the couple's dream move down under?

0:22:18 > 0:22:21Back in the UK, Lee has spent almost 30 years working

0:22:21 > 0:22:23as an alarm-service engineer.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26Over the years, I've met some wonderful customers

0:22:26 > 0:22:28and built up a great rapport with them. You know, you go in there,

0:22:28 > 0:22:31do the job and then have a cup of tea and a biscuit

0:22:31 > 0:22:33and a good chat.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37Debbie is equally as fulfilled in her role as a play specialist

0:22:37 > 0:22:39for children on a hospital burns ward.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44So, every day, I come in and meet as many children as I can.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46They're all in here waiting for surgery,

0:22:46 > 0:22:49or treatments. I just seem to be able to help them...

0:22:50 > 0:22:52..in their day-to-day worries.

0:22:55 > 0:22:59But while Lee's ready for the new opportunities New Zealand might bring...

0:22:59 > 0:23:02I've recently enquired about becoming a retained firefighter.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06I think it's a fantastic occupation and I'd hope to look into that

0:23:06 > 0:23:08possibly in New Zealand as well.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14Debbie won't find changing jobs so easy.

0:23:14 > 0:23:18I love working here and it's going to have to be a very good place

0:23:18 > 0:23:20to move to that will take me away.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27A move to New Zealand is dependent on the couple finding jobs

0:23:27 > 0:23:29they'd both be happy with.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Getting the right job with the right benefits

0:23:31 > 0:23:33is a major, major part of this.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36Not being any worse off than we would be in the UK.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39We've arranged for Lee to visit a security firm in central Auckland

0:23:39 > 0:23:43where he's met by director of human resources, Robin Pope.

0:23:43 > 0:23:45- Welcome, Lee. Nice to meet you. - Hello. Thank you very much.

0:23:45 > 0:23:46Come this way.

0:23:46 > 0:23:50Lee wastes no time in finding out if his skills will be recognised.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53Your experience and your qualifications

0:23:53 > 0:23:55are quite transferable and here in New Zealand we run on

0:23:55 > 0:23:57the same electrical platform,

0:23:57 > 0:23:59so that would actually be quite a nice fit for you.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01That's good news.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04Next, Lee wants to know about work hours.

0:24:04 > 0:24:08He currently works at around 37 and a half hours per week.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10The hours of work are 40 hours a week.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12I guess it would be the same as in the UK.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15- Is there call-out 24 hours? - It is, yeah.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18People don't necessarily only need a security company between

0:24:18 > 0:24:218.30 and 5.00, so our guys are on a call-out roster

0:24:21 > 0:24:24and they take turns in actually responding to the customers.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27Lee's used to working out of hours occasionally,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30but the longer week isn't the kind of change he was hoping for.

0:24:31 > 0:24:35Meanwhile, as Debbie's job is less common in New Zealand,

0:24:35 > 0:24:38we've arranged for her to visit a charity providing support

0:24:38 > 0:24:41to families with children in hospital.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Back in the UK, I work with children and their families

0:24:43 > 0:24:45on a one-to-one basis.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Here, I think it would be a lot more working with siblings.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Interesting to see if I can transfer my skills.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53- Come on through.- Thank you.

0:24:53 > 0:24:54Obviously play...

0:24:54 > 0:24:56After an initial tour of the centre...

0:24:58 > 0:25:02..Debbie chats with the charity's director Anne Kirkpatrick

0:25:02 > 0:25:05and she's anxious to learn more about the family liaison role

0:25:05 > 0:25:07she could be eligible for.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11It's really important for them to actually sit down with the family

0:25:11 > 0:25:13initially, understand what's happening,

0:25:13 > 0:25:16what the child's clinical situation is

0:25:16 > 0:25:19and then figuring out how best we can support them while they're here.

0:25:21 > 0:25:26How would my skills transfer over to working within this role?

0:25:26 > 0:25:30The transferable skills that are so essential that I see you have

0:25:30 > 0:25:33are the compassion for families, compassion for the children

0:25:33 > 0:25:35and understanding what they're going through.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38One of the things Debbie finds most rewarding about her job

0:25:38 > 0:25:41is providing care for sick children.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43Is it possible to work with children one-on-one?

0:25:43 > 0:25:46You do have a lot of interaction with children in your day-to-day

0:25:46 > 0:25:50dealings, but not from a...

0:25:50 > 0:25:53therapeutical situation, really.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57In this role, Debbie would support the siblings and parents of children

0:25:57 > 0:25:59receiving hospital treatment.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01But knowing she wouldn't be as hands-on with patients

0:26:01 > 0:26:04could be a major stumbling block.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08Back at the security firm,

0:26:08 > 0:26:11Lee's hoping for support with a personal career goal.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14In the UK, I've looked into becoming a retained firefighter.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16Is that something as a company you support?

0:26:16 > 0:26:19Well, we are a fire and security company and the Fire Service

0:26:19 > 0:26:22is one of our customers and we have a number of volunteer

0:26:22 > 0:26:25firefighters on our books at the moment as staff.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28That's promising.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30Now, the all-important question.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33So, what sort of salary would I be looking at as an engineer?

0:26:33 > 0:26:37So, we have people earning anything from 55,000 New Zealand dollars

0:26:37 > 0:26:40per annum to about 65,000 New Zealand.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43Lee could earn up to £30,000,

0:26:43 > 0:26:46£5,000 more than his current salary.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49But what are his chances of getting a job?

0:26:50 > 0:26:52Security itself is a growing industry.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55So, there's always growth for security

0:26:55 > 0:26:57and always growth for tradespeople.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59Back at the charity,

0:26:59 > 0:27:03will Debbie's earning potential give her more to be hopeful about?

0:27:03 > 0:27:06Anything between 50 and 70,000 New Zealand dollars

0:27:06 > 0:27:09for a full-time role which is 40 hours a week.

0:27:09 > 0:27:13She could earn around £34,000 a year.

0:27:13 > 0:27:17That's over £10,000 more than her UK salary.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19It might not be the perfect fit,

0:27:19 > 0:27:23but how likely would it be for Debbie to secure work?

0:27:23 > 0:27:26When I look at CVs, first and foremost, you know,

0:27:26 > 0:27:28do they have that compassion?

0:27:28 > 0:27:30Are they warm and open people? And I certainly get that

0:27:30 > 0:27:33from you from the time we've spent together,

0:27:33 > 0:27:36so, yeah, I think you'd have a good chance.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42With their meetings over, the pair reunite in the park

0:27:42 > 0:27:44to discuss the day.

0:27:44 > 0:27:47So, did you get any idea of how much you'd be earning?

0:27:47 > 0:27:49Be a bit more than I'm on now.

0:27:49 > 0:27:53So, enough to... Enough to buy our dream house?

0:27:53 > 0:27:55Maybe not the ones we've seen.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57How many sort of hours would you be working?

0:27:57 > 0:27:5940 hour week, so that's more.

0:27:59 > 0:28:01If I wanted to do the volunteer firefighting,

0:28:01 > 0:28:05- then they support that, as well. - Well, that's good. That's positive.

0:28:05 > 0:28:07They've already got people doing it.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09How was your day?

0:28:09 > 0:28:11It's a whole sort of different job.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14You're still sort of working with families and children,

0:28:14 > 0:28:16but you're not so hands-on with the actual sick child.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19It's sort of a complete change, really.

0:28:22 > 0:28:25So, when it comes to work opportunities,

0:28:25 > 0:28:27which way will the couple vote?

0:28:32 > 0:28:34Undecided.

0:28:34 > 0:28:35UK.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37I'm really surprised.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39I thought you'd say yes.

0:28:40 > 0:28:43I don't really see anything different at the moment, work wise.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47- OK.- I think yours was a foregone conclusion.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49No, not necessarily.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52Yeah, if you could walk into exactly the same job as you're doing now,

0:28:52 > 0:28:54then I think you would have gone straight onto it.

0:28:54 > 0:28:57I think I may have been undecided, possibly.

0:28:57 > 0:28:58But, yeah.

0:29:04 > 0:29:08With neither Debbie nor Lee satisfied they'd find jobs

0:29:08 > 0:29:11they'd be happy with, the prospect of working in New Zealand

0:29:11 > 0:29:14has left them questioning a move.

0:29:14 > 0:29:18Hopefully, a day sizing up the active outdoor lifestyle

0:29:18 > 0:29:22they're aiming for will be enough to get the dream back on track.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31Debbie and Lee head to Waitemata Clay Target Club

0:29:31 > 0:29:34in North Auckland for a morning of clay target shooting,

0:29:34 > 0:29:37an activity Lee loves to do at home.

0:29:39 > 0:29:4012 gauge shotgun.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43Very lethal in the wrong hands.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45First, a safety briefing.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48When you're not holding it, you want to put it in the stand.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52You can help me as we go, that would be great.

0:29:53 > 0:29:57Novice Debbie might need a little encouragement.

0:30:01 > 0:30:04Lee's quick to show off his mettle.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07And this time together triggers Debbie's adventurous side, too.

0:30:11 > 0:30:13Fab. Well done.

0:30:17 > 0:30:21Next, we've arranged for the couple to meet up with expats

0:30:21 > 0:30:24Scott and Lenny Clog and their dog Chilli,

0:30:24 > 0:30:27at Little Shoal Bay near central Auckland.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30- Who are you?- This is Chilli.- Chilli!

0:30:30 > 0:30:32With introductions out of the way,

0:30:32 > 0:30:36it's time for a coffee at one of the city's many dog-friendly cafes.

0:30:36 > 0:30:38Are you going to bring Merlin out to New Zealand?

0:30:38 > 0:30:40If we can't bring Merlin, we don't come.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43- We've said that all along. - Even me as keen to be here now,

0:30:43 > 0:30:45- if Merlin can't come then we... - Yeah, we don't do it.

0:30:45 > 0:30:49Debbie's had more reservations than Lee throughout the week

0:30:49 > 0:30:52and wonders how easy the couple found it to settle in.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54It is really like living in England,

0:30:54 > 0:30:56but slightly warmer and slightly smaller.

0:30:56 > 0:30:58But if Merlin was here with you,

0:30:58 > 0:31:01I think you guys would love this lifestyle.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08For Lee, New Zealand represents new beginnings.

0:31:08 > 0:31:12Moving out here would be a whole new start for us obviously

0:31:12 > 0:31:16and the chance to maybe start our relationship again.

0:31:16 > 0:31:18We've only been together for ten years,

0:31:18 > 0:31:22so we've missed out on a lot of time together.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25But he recognises what a move would mean giving up.

0:31:25 > 0:31:29Leaving the job I'm in and Debbie leaving her job,

0:31:29 > 0:31:31you're leaving behind almost a legacy.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34The customers you've built up and her with her patients.

0:31:35 > 0:31:39It's taking pride in what you do and leaving that behind.

0:31:39 > 0:31:41It would make me think about it.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44Debbie's hesitant about making the dream a reality, too.

0:31:44 > 0:31:48I know we've come all this way to try it...

0:31:49 > 0:31:50..but I'm still not sure.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55I need a job and a house, I think.

0:31:55 > 0:31:58Once I've got those things, then possibly.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02As much as she wants change,

0:32:02 > 0:32:05Debbie admits the week so far has been quite overwhelming.

0:32:05 > 0:32:07I'm scared.

0:32:07 > 0:32:09What we've got at home, I love.

0:32:11 > 0:32:12And if we could bring that here...

0:32:14 > 0:32:16..then I think I'd feel quite secure.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20Yeah, I'm just not sure which way we're going to go.

0:32:22 > 0:32:24A tough decision lies ahead of them.

0:32:24 > 0:32:28For now, the couple have to decide on the lifestyle they prefer.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30New Zealand or the UK.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48New Zealand.

0:32:48 > 0:32:49New Zealand.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56- Yeah. - So, what was good today for you?

0:32:56 > 0:33:00I think you can't take away that the weather here is fantastic.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02The people we met this morning were lovely.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05Very welcoming. I knew you'd go for it.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08Time together for you and me, and Merlin.

0:33:15 > 0:33:19A first vote for New Zealand from Debbie could mean all is not lost.

0:33:19 > 0:33:23But a new life down under has to make financial sense.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26To fund a move, the couple plan to sell their home,

0:33:26 > 0:33:30which they think is worth around £375,000.

0:33:30 > 0:33:31To see if they're right,

0:33:31 > 0:33:33we sent two estate agents round

0:33:33 > 0:33:36and Debbie and Lee are about to hear their opinions.

0:33:38 > 0:33:40Really good storage in the hallway.

0:33:40 > 0:33:43Lovely sized south-facing lounge with a bay window.

0:33:43 > 0:33:44A bit messy.

0:33:46 > 0:33:47This is a well-laid-out garden.

0:33:47 > 0:33:50Good decking area at the back with a hot tub, of course.

0:33:50 > 0:33:52That looks messy, as well.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54This is a great sized double bedroom.

0:33:54 > 0:33:57Nice big bay window. Good wardrobes and storage,

0:33:57 > 0:34:00and the en-suite as well is very handy.

0:34:00 > 0:34:02This is actually a really good size room,

0:34:02 > 0:34:03but that's lots of furniture in it.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06I would recommend if selling to declutter slightly

0:34:06 > 0:34:08- to make it feel bigger. - Yeah, that's all your stuff!

0:34:08 > 0:34:12Modern fitted white bathroom suite, quite small.

0:34:12 > 0:34:13Cheeky!

0:34:13 > 0:34:17In today's market, I value this property at £425,000.

0:34:17 > 0:34:22For a quick sale, I'd value the property at £415,000.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25- I like him.- I would value this house at £400,000.

0:34:25 > 0:34:29For a quick sale, I'd value this house at £385,000.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34Yeah, I still don't know if that would afford us

0:34:34 > 0:34:36any of the houses we looked at,

0:34:36 > 0:34:38but it's obviously a step in the right direction.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41Yeah. It is definitely a step in the right direction.

0:34:42 > 0:34:47With that encouraging news, the couple sit down to consider other costs.

0:34:47 > 0:34:51To help, we've provided them with a cost-of-living comparison.

0:34:51 > 0:34:55And first to get the once over is the weekly grocery shop.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58OK, potatoes, we buy a bag for like £1.75.

0:34:58 > 0:35:01- Yeah.- And here's it's pretty much double.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03Well, there's a market. We'll start growing potatoes.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05OK, dog food.

0:35:05 > 0:35:10We spend roughly around £32 and here, £18.94.

0:35:10 > 0:35:12Worst comes to worst, we can eat his food.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14Let's hope it doesn't come to that, Lee.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16A quick tot up of the figures reveals...

0:35:16 > 0:35:18£5 cheaper, near enough.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20So, with the grocery, it's a positive.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23Yeah, it's around a pound a penny count and it's not much difference.

0:35:23 > 0:35:25Next, they look at bigger monthly bills,

0:35:25 > 0:35:28starting with mortgage repayments basing the figures

0:35:28 > 0:35:31on the second property they viewed.

0:35:31 > 0:35:33£872 difference.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36So, it's pretty much doubling what we pay.

0:35:38 > 0:35:40OK, mobile phones.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42So, £50 it costs in the UK.

0:35:42 > 0:35:44- 39.24 here. So, a bit cheaper here.- Minus ten.

0:35:44 > 0:35:49Overall, they'd be paying out over £100 more each month in New Zealand.

0:35:49 > 0:35:51Could be better, but it could be worse.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53Moving on to look at salaries,

0:35:53 > 0:35:57they discover together they'd earn over £1,000 more per month

0:35:57 > 0:36:01and Debbie's taken aback by her potential pay increase.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04For me, that's a considerable amount.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06- £701...- Nearly twice as much as me.

0:36:06 > 0:36:08You'd be earning more than me.

0:36:08 > 0:36:11And their higher income makes a big difference when they work out

0:36:11 > 0:36:16overall they'd be £700 a month better off in New Zealand.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19No, I thought we were going to be minus actually.

0:36:19 > 0:36:21All the way along.

0:36:21 > 0:36:22It's almost a no-brainer, isn't it?

0:36:22 > 0:36:25But it's not so clear-cut for Debbie.

0:36:25 > 0:36:29If I couldn't get a job, my choice of what I wanted to do...

0:36:29 > 0:36:33You could still do the potential job you've seen as a stopgap

0:36:33 > 0:36:36for a couple of years until the right job comes along.

0:36:36 > 0:36:39I think for me, the actual persuading thing to come over here

0:36:39 > 0:36:41would be to actually get a job in something I love.

0:36:41 > 0:36:44So, we can basically throw away all of this.

0:36:44 > 0:36:45Now you're getting stroppy.

0:36:45 > 0:36:49My point is, you would give up all of this because of your job.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51Possibly, yeah.

0:36:55 > 0:37:00There are still questions to be answered before the couple can decide on their future.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02For now though,

0:37:02 > 0:37:05they have to choose between finances in New Zealand and the UK.

0:37:11 > 0:37:13New Zealand!

0:37:13 > 0:37:14New Zealand.

0:37:15 > 0:37:17Good!

0:37:18 > 0:37:20Any extra money a month is a bonus.

0:37:20 > 0:37:23- Yeah.- So, that's how I saw it.

0:37:23 > 0:37:25How about you?

0:37:25 > 0:37:26No-brainer.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37New Zealand has passed the financial test for the couple.

0:37:37 > 0:37:41But messages from friends and family could prove to be a bridge too far.

0:37:41 > 0:37:44I think this is the bit I've been dreading, to be honest.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46- Have you got your tissues ready? - I've got one tissue.

0:37:46 > 0:37:49- I'm hoping that's enough. - No way will that be enough.

0:37:49 > 0:37:51OK. Shall we have a look?

0:37:51 > 0:37:53- Yeah.- See what everyone is going to say.

0:37:53 > 0:37:54Hi, Debbie, hi, Lee.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56Hi, Debbie, hi, Lee.

0:37:56 > 0:37:58Hi, Lee and Debbie.

0:38:01 > 0:38:03Hello Debbie and Lee.

0:38:03 > 0:38:04Hi, Debbie. Hi, Lee.

0:38:04 > 0:38:07Hello, Auntie Debbie and Uncle Lee.

0:38:07 > 0:38:08Hello!

0:38:09 > 0:38:12I've known Lee for the best part of 20 years,

0:38:12 > 0:38:15so he's always been about if anything needs doing.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17He's very practical, very handy.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20Debbie's my second eldest daughter.

0:38:22 > 0:38:27When the two younger daughters lost their father and I was injured,

0:38:27 > 0:38:32she helped me out a lot with Tiffany and Danielle.

0:38:33 > 0:38:37Debbie has spent a lot of her life looking after people

0:38:37 > 0:38:41and I think she's sacrificed her personal dreams to do that

0:38:41 > 0:38:45and I think it's about time that she started thinking about what she wants for once.

0:38:47 > 0:38:50- Oh.- She will never appreciate how much she'll be missed

0:38:50 > 0:38:53because she doesn't think she's that important.

0:38:53 > 0:38:57She doesn't realise just what a fantastic person she is.

0:39:01 > 0:39:04Debbie and Lee are hoping to maybe start afresh

0:39:04 > 0:39:08and get away from a lot of things that have gone horribly for them

0:39:08 > 0:39:10cos they've gone through a really hard few years.

0:39:12 > 0:39:13On the other hand...

0:39:14 > 0:39:16..something so personal...

0:39:17 > 0:39:20..it doesn't matter where you are, you take it with you.

0:39:20 > 0:39:22You can't get away from it.

0:39:24 > 0:39:28I think you should really make a go of it and be happy.

0:39:28 > 0:39:30I really want you to be happy.

0:39:30 > 0:39:33We'd be behind you in every step of the way.

0:39:33 > 0:39:35If it's not right for them, fine.

0:39:35 > 0:39:38But if it is right for them, they must do it.

0:39:39 > 0:39:42They must... They must do this for themselves.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46Follow your head, listen to your heart and do what's right.

0:39:46 > 0:39:48I think you should go for it.

0:39:48 > 0:39:50They all want us to go.

0:39:50 > 0:39:52I don't want you to go,

0:39:52 > 0:39:55however if that's what makes you happy

0:39:55 > 0:39:58then obviously you've got my full support, both of you.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00And good luck making a decision.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02- Yes, good luck. - Bye.- Bye.

0:40:06 > 0:40:10- That was all very...- That was what I expected from most people.

0:40:12 > 0:40:13What my mum said...

0:40:14 > 0:40:18..was absolutely how I'm thinking, I think.

0:40:18 > 0:40:20You know, are we escaping?

0:40:20 > 0:40:22Are we just running away?

0:40:35 > 0:40:37Although largely encouraging,

0:40:37 > 0:40:40messages from loved ones have affirmed the void Lee and Debbie

0:40:40 > 0:40:44would be leaving at home if they do decide to move

0:40:44 > 0:40:47and reminded them that no matter where they go,

0:40:47 > 0:40:49the past is sure to follow.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51So, as their final decision draws closer,

0:40:51 > 0:40:56will the couple conclude their future lies at home or away?

0:41:01 > 0:41:03It's been a mixed week for the couple down under.

0:41:03 > 0:41:06And Debbie is battling with the decision in front of her.

0:41:06 > 0:41:08Maybe this is the place we should come to

0:41:08 > 0:41:10and make our dream a reality,

0:41:10 > 0:41:13but maybe we can make our home life better.

0:41:13 > 0:41:18She worries Lee's enthusiasm to move is masking a desire to escape their past.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21We still get upset from time to time.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24You know, when people have children and what have you,

0:41:24 > 0:41:26and it is still an emotional...

0:41:28 > 0:41:33..an emotional thing. And I think possibly Lee thinks by coming here,

0:41:33 > 0:41:35you know, we're going to live one big happy life.

0:41:37 > 0:41:39We love our house, we love where we live.

0:41:39 > 0:41:42We've got good friends and family around us.

0:41:43 > 0:41:46But maybe they're's something different, something missing,

0:41:46 > 0:41:48that we might have here.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53There's a big part of me that wants to go home

0:41:53 > 0:41:55there's a big part of me that thinks, you know,

0:41:55 > 0:41:58let's have an adventure, do something different.

0:41:58 > 0:42:00I'm feeling more confused than ever.

0:42:02 > 0:42:05So, knowing all they stand to lose and gain,

0:42:05 > 0:42:09the couple now have to choose which path they'll follow.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12Will it be New Zealand or the UK?

0:42:27 > 0:42:29New Zealand.

0:42:29 > 0:42:30UK.

0:42:31 > 0:42:35There was a little bit of a hesitation from me,

0:42:35 > 0:42:40but I think there's just too much pull at the moment for the UK.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42I know what your job means to you now, I guess.

0:42:42 > 0:42:44Now, I almost feel like I'm letting you down.

0:42:44 > 0:42:46And vice versa.

0:42:48 > 0:42:50So, shall we just spent six months in either?

0:42:50 > 0:42:51Yeah, sounds like a good idea.

0:42:59 > 0:43:03New Zealand has delivered mixed reactions from the Daniels.

0:43:03 > 0:43:07And while Lee still feels it's somewhere they could be happy,

0:43:07 > 0:43:10Debbie's less certain the grass would be any greener

0:43:10 > 0:43:12on the other side of the world.

0:43:12 > 0:43:14Wherever they decide to call home,

0:43:14 > 0:43:18we wish them a long and happy future together.
