0:00:02 > 0:00:04You've spent decades dreaming of living

0:00:04 > 0:00:06on the other side of the world,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09but when the new love in your life isn't convinced

0:00:09 > 0:00:13the grass is greener elsewhere, how do you go about persuading them

0:00:13 > 0:00:18to uproot everything in the UK and follow your dream?

0:00:18 > 0:00:21Simon McLean is a man with a mission.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24Going to Australia is the thing I most want to do in my life.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27For fiancee Jane, that's a big ask.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29He loves me and he wants to be with me forever,

0:00:29 > 0:00:32but it doesn't mean that I have to go.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35A trial week down under proves tempting...

0:00:35 > 0:00:38I have had one of the best days of my life.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40But when the reality of leaving loved ones

0:00:40 > 0:00:42brings her back to Earth...

0:00:42 > 0:00:43That was awful.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46..Jane's faced with an unbearable choice.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50I'm going to break my mum's heart if I come here.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52If I don't come here...

0:00:53 > 0:00:56..I'm potentially stopping Simon living his dream.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21With breathtaking coastlines and a relaxed outdoors lifestyle,

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Australia's a popular destination for those

0:01:24 > 0:01:26looking to start a new life.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28And with more kangaroos than people,

0:01:28 > 0:01:31there's plenty of room for the 34,000 Brits

0:01:31 > 0:01:34that make the country their new home every year.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40Having moved to the UK from Australia almost half a century ago,

0:01:40 > 0:01:44Simon McLean has spent most of his adult life longing to return to the

0:01:44 > 0:01:47country he once called home.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Now with his sons from a previous marriage all grown up,

0:01:50 > 0:01:54he believes the time is right to make the move,

0:01:54 > 0:01:58but first he needs to convince partner Jane to give up everything

0:01:58 > 0:02:01she loves in the UK and stand by her man

0:02:01 > 0:02:03on the other side of the world.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07The journey from the UK to Perth takes the couple

0:02:07 > 0:02:10nearly 9,000 miles from home, but, despite spending 20 hours

0:02:10 > 0:02:14in the air, they agree it was a relatively smooth ride.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16The flight was good.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Well, I don't particularly like flying and, actually,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21I quite enjoyed this flight.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Maybe it's cos I was looking forward to getting to Australia.

0:02:23 > 0:02:28Simon can hardly believe his feet are finally back on Australian soil.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32I've been thinking of coming back to Australia ever since I was a kid

0:02:32 > 0:02:35and I just can't wait to see what it's like for real.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39But it's going to take more than nostalgia to win Jane round.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42I've got to put Mum out of my head and Simon out of my head and see how

0:02:42 > 0:02:46I'm going to feel about coming here forever.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48She's got to make her own decision.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51I'm never going to force her, but I'm hoping she'll love it enough

0:02:51 > 0:02:53to want to come.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Things will need to live up to Simon's expectations

0:02:56 > 0:02:59in the week ahead if he's to persuade Jane their future lies

0:02:59 > 0:03:01on the other side of the world.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Simon McLean and Jane Fisher live in Chester,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10with their dog Harry. They've been together for three years.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15We are just best friends.

0:03:15 > 0:03:16- Yes.- Absolutely best friends.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19I can tell him anything.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21- That's true.- You know,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24I trust him, I love him to bits.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Even though he's a quirky old devil,

0:03:27 > 0:03:28I love him so much, I really do.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33- Ditto.- You can't just say, "Ditto"!

0:03:35 > 0:03:39Life is good in the UK, but having spent his early childhood living

0:03:39 > 0:03:43in Australia, mature-student Simon dreams of moving back

0:03:43 > 0:03:45to the other side of the world.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47I do regret that I didn't go when I was young.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50But life gets in the way.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53I got married, I had children, I don't regret either of those.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56But it did prevent me going to Australia.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00The subject has been a constant threat to the couples' relationship.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04I think the pressure started almost immediately when we met.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06You could say literally from the first conversation,

0:04:06 > 0:04:10when I put my coffee down, I noticed the place mats were Australia.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14And it was automatically, "Oh, have you been to Australia?"

0:04:14 > 0:04:16And it spiralled from there.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19Going to Australia's the thing I most want to do in my life,

0:04:19 > 0:04:22in our lives, but it would be like starting afresh,

0:04:22 > 0:04:24completely afresh,

0:04:24 > 0:04:26in a new country and a new life and that's something

0:04:26 > 0:04:28I find very exciting.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30Though banker Jane's not opposed to emigrating,

0:04:30 > 0:04:34it's not something she envisaged doing any time soon.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36I'm looking at sort of ten, 15 years' time.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38I don't really want to work in Australia,

0:04:38 > 0:04:41I want to lie in the garden and drink gin.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46When Simon recently popped the question,

0:04:46 > 0:04:51Jane happily said yes, but not necessarily to living down under.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53I actually said to him,

0:04:53 > 0:04:58"You do know this doesn't mean that I'm definitely going to Australia?"

0:04:58 > 0:05:00Cos it doesn't, you know. It means that he loves me

0:05:00 > 0:05:03and he wants to be with me forever, but it doesn't mean

0:05:03 > 0:05:05that I have to go.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08With his children from a previous marriage now grown up,

0:05:08 > 0:05:10for Simon it's now or never.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Yes, I'm no spring chicken, but I still feel fit enough

0:05:13 > 0:05:17and young enough to go to another country and start again.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20If I leave it too long, I'll never get there.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23For Jane, though, an imminent move would mean breaking close bonds

0:05:23 > 0:05:27in the UK. Her best friend Sam is more like a sister.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32I'm of a certain age and it's taken me a long time to find my Sam...

0:05:33 > 0:05:36..and I might never ever be able to have a friend like that again

0:05:36 > 0:05:40because you don't get two Sams in this life, you really don't.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42She's absolutely brilliant.

0:05:45 > 0:05:46And as an only child,

0:05:46 > 0:05:50Jane can barely conceive of the idea of leaving her elderly mum.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52She's just my mum.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54You know, I love her to bits.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Leaving her forever...

0:05:58 > 0:05:59I don't know.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Ultimately, she's torn between the people she loves most.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04I really can't imagine my mum...

0:06:05 > 0:06:08..potentially saying goodbye to me, cos it

0:06:08 > 0:06:10could be a goodbye,

0:06:10 > 0:06:15and, then again, I can't imagine waving Simon off on a plane

0:06:15 > 0:06:17to start a life without me.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22Whichever way I turn, it's wrong for somebody.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24The week ahead will be Simon's long-awaited chance

0:06:24 > 0:06:28to see if Australia really can be his future and whether he can

0:06:28 > 0:06:32convince the love of his life to buy into the dream.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34I want Jane to be happy.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36I want us both to be happy.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39I think we can be happy in Australia, but there's no getting

0:06:39 > 0:06:41away from the fact that you're asking somebody to give up

0:06:41 > 0:06:43an awful lot.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45I am really looking forward to getting out there and seeing if it

0:06:45 > 0:06:47can be my dream. It's just...

0:06:49 > 0:06:53..can I do it? When push comes to shove, can I do it?

0:06:53 > 0:06:54Yeah.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02Simon and Jane will be spending their trial week in Perth,

0:07:02 > 0:07:06capital of Western Australia, and Simon's boyhood home.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09The last leg of their journey brings them to Rockingham,

0:07:09 > 0:07:12the sought-after suburb on the city centre's outskirts.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15This two-bedroom house will be their base for the week.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19As they arrive, Simon's already feeling at ease.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Oh, my Aussie home.

0:07:22 > 0:07:23Ladies first.

0:07:25 > 0:07:26Oh, wow.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29- Bigger than you thought? - Yeah, I thought it was going

0:07:29 > 0:07:30to be really small.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32That's a big sofa, isn't it?

0:07:32 > 0:07:36Right, get the kettle on, love.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39Not sure that's quite the way to play it, Simon.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41There's loads of wine glasses, though, so that's a good start.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43- That's a good start. - As the couple explore further,

0:07:43 > 0:07:45first impressions prove true.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- This is quite small.- I would not want to buy something like this,

0:07:48 > 0:07:49- it's too small. - Yeah, it's too small.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52Outdoors is more what Simon dreams of.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54- Now this is more like it. - This is... Yeah.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56This is lovely.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59Simon's already making plans.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01- French doors. - I like the lemon tree, though.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03- I love that. - Is that a lemon tree?- I think so.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05Aren't those yellow things lemons?

0:08:05 > 0:08:08Can I point out these large, green,

0:08:08 > 0:08:11apple-shaped lemons on the tree up there?

0:08:11 > 0:08:13Really, Simon?

0:08:13 > 0:08:15I think you might be the lemon here.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Joking aside, this isn't the kind of property to make Jane

0:08:18 > 0:08:20move half a world away.

0:08:20 > 0:08:25I don't think I'd be rushing to leave my little cottage

0:08:25 > 0:08:26to move into this.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28No, no, I agree.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30Nice place to stay for the week, though.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Good place to stay for the week.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39Back in the UK, the couple live in Jane's two-bedroom home

0:08:39 > 0:08:42in the village of Clutton just outside Chester.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45I love my little house to bits.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47It's gorgeous.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49Yes, small, but it's cosy-small.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52But I would love a place that's our house...

0:08:52 > 0:08:55- We buy together.- ..that we buy together and choose together.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57I understand that.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01If they move, their budget for a home down under is £300,000

0:09:01 > 0:09:04and they know exactly what they want.

0:09:04 > 0:09:05Modern, open-plan.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08We like that sort of inside-outside living.

0:09:08 > 0:09:09Yeah, I'd like something...

0:09:09 > 0:09:12I'd like a decent sized garden.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15If we couldn't find our dream home...

0:09:16 > 0:09:20..I don't know whether I would even contemplate going because surely the

0:09:20 > 0:09:25home is the first place where you would start and build your new life.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30Why leave something that you love to go and live in something that's OK?

0:09:31 > 0:09:32- Yeah, I agree.- Yeah.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Finding the perfect home in Australia will be crucial

0:09:37 > 0:09:40if Simon's ever to get Jane on board with the move.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43To give the couple an idea of what's available on the Perth

0:09:43 > 0:09:46property market, we've arranged for them to view three properties -

0:09:46 > 0:09:48two close to their budget and a third,

0:09:48 > 0:09:52which should be everything they're looking for in a dream home.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54The search begins in the suburb of Waikiki,

0:09:54 > 0:09:5730 miles south of Perth city.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00Will this modern three-bedroom home hit the mark?

0:10:00 > 0:10:02Look at that beautiful...

0:10:02 > 0:10:05- Wow.- That looks stunning. - Wow.

0:10:05 > 0:10:06Oh, wow.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09Looks like it.

0:10:09 > 0:10:10OK, we'll take it.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12I love it. All right.

0:10:12 > 0:10:13In you go.

0:10:13 > 0:10:14Ooh.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19- Oh, now you're talking. - Oh, my goodness.

0:10:19 > 0:10:20- Look at that view.- God!

0:10:22 > 0:10:24- Open-plan.- Oh, wow.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Jane's dumbstruck.

0:10:27 > 0:10:28I...

0:10:28 > 0:10:31It's not often this happens, there are no words coming out.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33Simon seizes the opportunity.

0:10:35 > 0:10:36Would this do?

0:10:36 > 0:10:37Yeah.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Things are off to a good start.

0:10:41 > 0:10:42Oh...

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Think of the teddies I could get in here.

0:10:46 > 0:10:47Oh, wow.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51- SHE GASPS - A walk-in wardrobe!

0:10:51 > 0:10:54The en suite's got one drawback.

0:10:54 > 0:10:55- Only one sink.- Only one sink.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00An adjoining outside space gives food for thought.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02I'm just thinking -

0:11:02 > 0:11:04breakfast. Little outside bit.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Oh, nice, I like this.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Might have my coffee here in the morning without everybody

0:11:10 > 0:11:12- looking at me in my dressing down.- Yeah.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15Back indoors, the perky mood continues.

0:11:15 > 0:11:16Ah!

0:11:16 > 0:11:18Family bathroom.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20- I like the shower head. - Oh, I like the shower head.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21- That's nice, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:11:25 > 0:11:26Nice.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29I love the idea of having a laundry room.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31- Completely separate.- Yes.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33That's interesting, isn't it?

0:11:34 > 0:11:35It's a tap.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38It's an interesting shape of tap!

0:11:40 > 0:11:43The garden has another quirky water feature.

0:11:43 > 0:11:44SHE GASPS

0:11:44 > 0:11:46Love it!

0:11:46 > 0:11:47Oh, Simon.

0:11:47 > 0:11:48Look at that.

0:11:50 > 0:11:51It's a great entertaining space, isn't it?

0:11:51 > 0:11:55The pair seem tickled pink with this property, but with a budget of

0:11:55 > 0:11:59£300,000, will the price be a hit or miss?

0:12:01 > 0:12:03- It's over.- Over? - Yeah, yeah.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07- You think so?- Yes, I do.- I'm going to guess a little bit under.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09- Really?- Yeah, because it's three bedrooms.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11I know it's only three bedrooms, but look at that.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14- So what do you think? - 325, I reckon.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16I'm going to go 275.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18- Really?- Yes. Do you want to turn it over?

0:12:18 > 0:12:19No.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22- Go on, then.- No, you do it.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24- No, you do it.- Ladies first.

0:12:24 > 0:12:25All right, then.

0:12:31 > 0:12:32Wow.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36298,971, nearly bang on the money.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40It's affordable and Jane's almost moved to tears.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42I can't believe we could...

0:12:42 > 0:12:43Oh, wow.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45We could live here.

0:12:45 > 0:12:46Oh, my goodness.

0:12:46 > 0:12:47Wow.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Oh, come on, let's have it.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Simon's day couldn't have started any better

0:12:56 > 0:12:59and there's still two more properties to view.

0:12:59 > 0:13:00The next is in Warnbro,

0:13:00 > 0:13:04a popular suburb 40 miles south of central Perth.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07Will this three-bedroom property impress as much?

0:13:09 > 0:13:11I'm scared.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13- I think we're going to have a view. - We're going to have a view!

0:13:15 > 0:13:16We're going to have a view.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18Simon's already so smitten, he's forgotten to stop.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Have you just driven past it?

0:13:20 > 0:13:21Yes.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25After a quick U-turn, it's time to see what's in store.

0:13:25 > 0:13:26Oh, straight in.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Straight in.

0:13:29 > 0:13:30OK.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32First impression - nowhere near as nice.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35- Not as nice. Yeah, I agree. - Nowhere near as nice.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Smells a bit musty. Or is that me?

0:13:38 > 0:13:41Let's hope their reaction to the kitchen's less stale.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44- OK.- Kitchen area.- Open-plan.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48- This one hasn't got that wow factor for me.- No.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51Simon could have his work cut out with this one.

0:13:51 > 0:13:52Here we go.

0:13:52 > 0:13:53OK.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56- Oh, I like the wood. - I like the wood.

0:13:56 > 0:13:57Oh, it's small.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59Oh, sorry.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01- Totally overlooked. - Overlooked, yeah.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03I know.

0:14:03 > 0:14:04Are they plastic, those tiles?

0:14:04 > 0:14:07I have no idea. It looks like someone's been sick out the window.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09It does a bit.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11Back indoors...

0:14:11 > 0:14:13This feels like...

0:14:13 > 0:14:14a hotel.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20..things take on a more positive vibe in the master bedroom.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24Ah, now, this is nice.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26I like this.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28- Ah.- En suite.- A bit cramped.

0:14:30 > 0:14:31Yeah, it's a bit old, isn't it?

0:14:31 > 0:14:34They're very small people that live here.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37It's got the balcony, but would you actually sit out there

0:14:37 > 0:14:38right on the front?

0:14:39 > 0:14:42No, I'm afraid it's still not...

0:14:42 > 0:14:44- Not selling itself?- No.

0:14:44 > 0:14:49This property has fallen far short of the wow factor of the first one.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52But if the price falls below their £300,000 budget,

0:14:52 > 0:14:54could it bring them round?

0:14:55 > 0:14:57OK, I'm going to say...

0:14:57 > 0:15:00- I'm going to say 250.- I'm going to have to agree with you,

0:15:00 > 0:15:01I think you're about 250.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05- Ready? - Come on, then.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13- You're kidding me?- No way!

0:15:16 > 0:15:19£287,566.

0:15:20 > 0:15:21Nope.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24It's nearly £13,000 under budget but...

0:15:24 > 0:15:26I am actually quite shocked at that.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30Compared to the other one, it doesn't even come close.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34I'm working on the principle we've been shown a lovely one,

0:15:34 > 0:15:35a not-so-nice one and now...

0:15:35 > 0:15:38- Yeah, the mansion's next. - The mansion is next. - The mansion's next, yeah.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40With expectations running high,

0:15:40 > 0:15:43let's hope the final property can deliver.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46It is in Baldivis. Just a half-hour drive from Perth,

0:15:46 > 0:15:49this suburb's got a semi-rural feel,

0:15:49 > 0:15:52alongside plenty of amenities for modern living.

0:15:52 > 0:15:58But will this stylish four-bedroom house be Jane's dream property?

0:15:58 > 0:15:59Oh, I like this.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01It's looking promising.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Thumbs up so far.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08Oh, hello.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10Oh! Now you're talking!

0:16:13 > 0:16:14Oh, wow.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17I thought I loved the other one till I saw this.

0:16:18 > 0:16:19Oh, wow.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23Sounds like things are back on track.

0:16:23 > 0:16:24Oh, this is lovely.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28- Now...entertaining?- Yeah.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32The stone-top kitchen island overlooks the living and dining areas.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34This is what we're talking about, isn't it?

0:16:34 > 0:16:38- Beautifully modern, beautifully open-plan and it's just what we want.- It is, yeah.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41And the cinema room's also a hit.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43JANE GASPS

0:16:43 > 0:16:44A theatre room!

0:16:50 > 0:16:53Jane's lost for words again in the master bedroom.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55Here we go, here we go, here we go.

0:16:58 > 0:16:59Wow.

0:17:00 > 0:17:01Oh, look at that! Oh...

0:17:03 > 0:17:07(Look at the floor. Look at the floor. Oh, my goodness.)

0:17:07 > 0:17:10- (What's round the corner?- I don't know, why are we whispering?)

0:17:10 > 0:17:13I don't know. Awed silence, I think.

0:17:13 > 0:17:14It's like being in a church.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18- Look.- Oh...

0:17:18 > 0:17:21Oh, it gets better. This is just amazing.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25The luxury ensuite's right up her street.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27This is like film stars have.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32- And his and hers sinks.- Yeah.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35- It's nice, isn't it? - So there's no fighting over who's dribbled in the sink.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37Nice(!)

0:17:37 > 0:17:41So would you move to Australia for a house like this?

0:17:41 > 0:17:43- Yes.- You would.

0:17:43 > 0:17:44- I would.- Good.- Sorry, Mum.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46I'm dying to see this bit.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49Outdoors is a winner, too.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51OK.

0:17:51 > 0:17:52Oh, nice.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54It's perfect. I love the fire pit.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57I'm not quite sure if it's animal friendly but I love that.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59Pretendy grass.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02The pair can definitely picture themselves living here.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06I can imagine pushing the doors right back.

0:18:06 > 0:18:07You know, you're sitting out here...

0:18:07 > 0:18:09No, hang on.

0:18:09 > 0:18:10I'm sitting out here...

0:18:10 > 0:18:13- And I'm cooking.- ..and you're cooking in there, yeah.

0:18:13 > 0:18:14Yeah. You could just feed me.

0:18:16 > 0:18:21But is it somewhere they could afford to call home with their £300,000 budget?

0:18:23 > 0:18:24Here we go again.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28I'm going to say this is £365,000.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31I think it might surprise you.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34I think I'm going to say 325.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36You think it's only 25,000 over budget?

0:18:36 > 0:18:38- Really?- Shall we turn this one together?

0:18:38 > 0:18:40- Yeah.- Yay.

0:18:40 > 0:18:41- Yeah.- Go on, then.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47- Ready?- Go for it.

0:18:47 > 0:18:48And...

0:18:51 > 0:18:53- There you go.- Wow.

0:18:54 > 0:18:59£323,433.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01It's £23,000 over budget.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04- Wow.- But it's a lot less than Jane was expecting.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06That makes it a bit more tempting - doesn't it? - for you.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08It does, yeah, it does.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12It's sort of like dangling the carrot a little bit.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15Their day house-hunting has got Simon's battle to persuade Jane to

0:19:15 > 0:19:17make the move off to a decent start.

0:19:17 > 0:19:22Property one's location had them both swayed and was well within

0:19:22 > 0:19:23the couple's budget.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26They had a very different point of view about the second property,

0:19:26 > 0:19:28though, and the price shocked.

0:19:28 > 0:19:33Finally, property three was the dream home and, though over budget,

0:19:33 > 0:19:35Jane felt she could be tempted.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37So when it comes to houses in Australia,

0:19:37 > 0:19:40will Jane and Simon choose home or away?

0:19:40 > 0:19:44Based on the properties that we've seen today, our vote goes to...

0:19:53 > 0:19:54Whoops!

0:20:01 > 0:20:02BOTH: Australia.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06You know, those properties that we saw today were amazing.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09I'd be mad to vote anything but Australia.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12Well done, right decision.

0:20:13 > 0:20:14Sorry, Mum.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24Jane's first vote for Australia means Simon's dream is a step closer

0:20:24 > 0:20:29to becoming a reality but affording the Australian lifestyle he pines

0:20:29 > 0:20:32for will depend on the couple securing the right jobs down under.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35Simon's an ex-fireman.

0:20:35 > 0:20:39So I've always had an interest in fire - not starting them,

0:20:39 > 0:20:40putting them out.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43He's spent the last three years studying fire-safety engineering

0:20:43 > 0:20:47with a view to launching a new career down under and

0:20:47 > 0:20:48he's already done some research.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52I would like to feel I can earn

0:20:52 > 0:20:55a salary of around about 50,000 sterling.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58Whether I walk into that sort of job on day one,

0:20:58 > 0:21:00I don't know.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Jane works in a bank where she's part of a bereavement team.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06And that sounds quite morbid but what I do is,

0:21:06 > 0:21:08when someone passes away,

0:21:08 > 0:21:15I help the next of kin and executors deal with their estates and sort out

0:21:15 > 0:21:16their finances.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19Unsure if a similar role exists down under,

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Jane would consider retraining but...

0:21:21 > 0:21:25If I can't get a salary that I'm expecting and if Simon can't get

0:21:25 > 0:21:28the salary that he's expecting, the move's off.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31The last thing I want to do is to travel all the way across to

0:21:31 > 0:21:34the other side of the world to struggle.

0:21:34 > 0:21:38Simon's dream of a fresh start hinges on today as the couple set out to

0:21:38 > 0:21:42explore what opportunities might exist for them in the Perth job market.

0:21:43 > 0:21:48First up, Simon meets with expat Andy who's been in the fire-safety

0:21:48 > 0:21:52industry ever since he arrived down under 26 years ago.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55Straight away, Simon's keen to know if there's plenty of work.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57It's steady.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59The industry in WA's very regulated.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03In our business now, we've taken on a new person just to do the auditing,

0:22:03 > 0:22:05it's that big and much of a job.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Sounds like just the sort of role Simon's degree could lead to.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11Are there opportunities for people like me?

0:22:11 > 0:22:15Certainly. I mean, not only in the consultancy side.

0:22:15 > 0:22:19There's... The fire engineering is part of near enough every building that

0:22:19 > 0:22:22we tender on now, so, yes, opportunities there definitely.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25Just what Simon was hoping to hear.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27Looks like the past three years have paid off.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31Do those sort of qualifications work in Australia for me?

0:22:31 > 0:22:35Oh, yes, certainly they would and especially in WA because there is no

0:22:35 > 0:22:40licensing system in WA, whereas there is in Victoria and Queensland.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44We are trying to get that licensing system into WA but not as yet.

0:22:44 > 0:22:45Probably a couple of years away.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47So the best thing for me, by the sound of it -

0:22:47 > 0:22:49get in before the licensing comes,

0:22:49 > 0:22:52then I can be grandfathered into the licensing scheme.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54I think, with the qualifications you've got there,

0:22:54 > 0:22:56you would get the license anyway.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58That's great news.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01So would the money be what he was hoping for?

0:23:02 > 0:23:08Between 90,000 and 100,000, so £45,000 to £50,000,

0:23:08 > 0:23:11and the more you go up the management scale,

0:23:11 > 0:23:17you could be anywhere up to maybe 140,000, maybe 170,000.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19Fantastic. Andy, thank you very much,

0:23:19 > 0:23:21really appreciate that useful information.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23No problem and good luck, mate.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25It's been a positive morning for Simon.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27This is the area I want to concentrate on,

0:23:27 > 0:23:30it's the degree I've done and I'm excited about the potential of

0:23:30 > 0:23:33working in Australia, doing what I love doing.

0:23:33 > 0:23:34Meanwhile, across town,

0:23:34 > 0:23:36Jane's visiting a local recruitment agency

0:23:36 > 0:23:41who specialise in the financial sector. She's met by Chris.

0:23:41 > 0:23:42- Hi, Jane.- Hi.- How are you going?

0:23:42 > 0:23:45- Nice to meet you.- Nice to meet you. Come through.- OK.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48Jane's keen to know if her role as a bereavement specialist could

0:23:48 > 0:23:50transfer to Australia.

0:23:50 > 0:23:51I made some enquiries.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54The bereavement role,

0:23:54 > 0:23:58if it exists at all, it would be in head offices in Sydney or Melbourne.

0:23:58 > 0:24:02Disappointing news for Jane and there's worse to come.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05At the moment, the staff numbers within branches

0:24:05 > 0:24:09isn't a high area of need in terms of recruitment.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12I think you're telling me it would be hard for you to find me a job.

0:24:13 > 0:24:17It just depends how flexible you are in your seeking of a job.

0:24:17 > 0:24:19I mean, in a quick search this morning,

0:24:19 > 0:24:23there was about three roles at sort of call-centre team leader or manager

0:24:23 > 0:24:26position available in Perth.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29Jane might have to take a step back in Australia but if the money was

0:24:29 > 0:24:32right, could it be worth the sacrifice?

0:24:32 > 0:24:34What would the salary be?

0:24:34 > 0:24:38I think the salary for those lower-level customer-service positions would

0:24:38 > 0:24:41- be around 60,000 to 80,000 or 30,000 to 40,000 in pounds.- Really?

0:24:41 > 0:24:46That's almost double what Jane earns at the moment in the UK and

0:24:46 > 0:24:48she could up her salary even more.

0:24:48 > 0:24:52I think there would be opportunities to grow from there...

0:24:52 > 0:24:55- Yup.- ..by demonstrating your experience once in the role,

0:24:55 > 0:24:58being able to incorporate the skills you did learn in the bereavement

0:24:58 > 0:25:01process. Thanks, Jane, it was lovely to meet you.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04We will certainly do our very best and good luck with your search.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07Today's been a mixed bag for Jane.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09Salary-wise, brilliant,

0:25:09 > 0:25:13very pleased about that but it doesn't sound like I'm going to

0:25:13 > 0:25:14walk into a role easily.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Perhaps Simon's news can sweeten the blow.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20So how was your day?

0:25:20 > 0:25:23It was actually quite positive, there's plenty of opportunities.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27The salary was quite encouraging, £70,000 sterling.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30- Wow.- So very nice to start with.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34In some of the states in Australia you have to be licensed to do this

0:25:34 > 0:25:37kind of thing but not in Western Australia at the moment.

0:25:37 > 0:25:41- Oh, right.- So it means we need to be here within two years before

0:25:41 > 0:25:43- the licensing comes into place.- OK.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45Is that true or have you just made it up?

0:25:45 > 0:25:46No, no, absolutely true.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49Oh, no pressure(!) Oh, well, good news for one of us.

0:25:51 > 0:25:55So will Simon's buoyancy have put Jane's mind at ease?

0:25:55 > 0:25:59Today we have been having job interviews and now we're going to

0:25:59 > 0:26:01decide - is it England or Australia?

0:26:15 > 0:26:16- Australia.- UK.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20I'm not too surprised.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22- Sorry, but...- I'm not too surprised.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26Just... It's not going to be as easy as I thought.

0:26:26 > 0:26:31Right now, I feel I'd be absolutely stupid to leave a job that I love

0:26:31 > 0:26:32and I'm secure in for...

0:26:32 > 0:26:34Well, for nothing.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36It had to be Australia for me.

0:26:36 > 0:26:37You'll just have to keep me.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39I will. I'll keep you.

0:26:46 > 0:26:51Simon's taken Jane's vote for the UK in his stride but there's clearly

0:26:51 > 0:26:56more effort required if he's to convince her to follow him halfway

0:26:56 > 0:26:59around the world. So will a day experiencing

0:26:59 > 0:27:02the lifestyle Perth has to offer be

0:27:02 > 0:27:05enough to help Simon turn things around

0:27:05 > 0:27:08and get Jane more excited about a move?

0:27:08 > 0:27:12Their day starts with a trip to Caversham Wildlife Park.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14Jane's mad about animals,

0:27:14 > 0:27:19so getting up close with some of Australia's wildlife could edge her closer to Simon's dream.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22- Which is your favourite? Which animal do you most want...?- Koalas!

0:27:22 > 0:27:24- Koalas.- Absolutely.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27First up, though, it's the albino kangaroos.

0:27:27 > 0:27:29We could have one of these in the back garden.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Hello, baby. He's loving that.

0:27:34 > 0:27:36Is he...? Is he?

0:27:36 > 0:27:38Ay, ay, ay! Oh!

0:27:40 > 0:27:43It's good that they've got the little area so you don't disturb them,

0:27:43 > 0:27:45- isn't it?- Everybody needs a break.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48Yeah. Let's have a go at feeding them.

0:27:48 > 0:27:50It's not just the joeys feeling peckish.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53- Is it nice? Have you tried it? - Have a try, you try.

0:27:53 > 0:27:54See, get some. Who can we feed?

0:27:54 > 0:27:56JANE LAUGHS

0:27:56 > 0:27:57It's all right.

0:27:58 > 0:27:59It looks like cat litter.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04Not the slightest bit interested.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07- Have a sniff, have a sniff. - Jane force-feeding kangaroos.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09Me mum would just love this.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11Jane's in her element.

0:28:11 > 0:28:15And Karen the koala rekindles fond memories.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17Have you been named yet or not?

0:28:17 > 0:28:18She's lovely.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22I've wanted to do this since I was tiny.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24Me dad used to tell me about koalas,

0:28:24 > 0:28:26not that he knew anything about koalas.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29But when you're a little girl you believe everything, don't you?

0:28:29 > 0:28:31Worth moving to Australia for this, then?

0:28:31 > 0:28:34- You just never miss an opportunity. - Never.

0:28:36 > 0:28:39That is the best thing I've ever done, I think.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42That was absolutely unbelievable.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45That's just the kind of thing Simon wanted to hear.

0:28:45 > 0:28:50Next, a visit to one of Australia's oldest and largest wineries.

0:28:50 > 0:28:51Would you like a wine-taster day?

0:28:51 > 0:28:53- Yes, please.- Yeah.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55So this is the Chardonnay Pinot Noir.

0:28:55 > 0:28:57There's water there if you need it and also a spittoon.

0:28:57 > 0:28:59I won't be needing that.

0:28:59 > 0:29:01- Cheers.- Cheers.

0:29:04 > 0:29:05I could drink that forever.

0:29:05 > 0:29:08Today's been Jane's idea of heaven.

0:29:08 > 0:29:12You would be absolutely crazy not to love this, this is just perfect.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15But it's not all rose-tinted glasses.

0:29:15 > 0:29:19I have to remember that, yes, this is amazing, this is wonderful,

0:29:19 > 0:29:20but I can't do this every day.

0:29:20 > 0:29:24I have to get a job so I can have the dream house that I want,

0:29:24 > 0:29:28so it's a circle and, at the minute, there's a little bit of the circle

0:29:28 > 0:29:30missing for me.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32When it comes to voting on lifestyle down under, though,

0:29:32 > 0:29:34what's the verdict?

0:29:34 > 0:29:37Based on our lifestyle day, we are going to choose...

0:29:47 > 0:29:48BOTH: Australia.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52Hey!

0:29:52 > 0:29:55I have had one of the best days of my life.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58I got to tick boxes I never thought I would tick.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01I loved every single minute of it.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03I couldn't go any other way.

0:30:03 > 0:30:07- What a perfect day, what a perfect day.- It was great. Do it again?- Yeah, yeah.

0:30:16 > 0:30:18It's been a red-letter day for Jane

0:30:18 > 0:30:21and it looks like she could be coming round

0:30:21 > 0:30:24to Simon's vision of a future in Australia.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27But achieving the ideal life down under won't come cheap,

0:30:27 > 0:30:30so getting the right price for Jane's house in the UK

0:30:30 > 0:30:33will be crucial for a move to happen.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36The couple think it's worth 155,000.

0:30:36 > 0:30:38Will two local estate agents agree?

0:30:39 > 0:30:41As long as it's worth at least a million.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43Yeah. I just hope there's no dust.

0:30:57 > 0:31:00OK, so this is the main living area of the property.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03They've had it very neutrally decorated, which is nice,

0:31:03 > 0:31:04very light and airy.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08Oh, it's a really nice kitchen.

0:31:08 > 0:31:12Country-style cottage, which goes really well with the bungalow.

0:31:12 > 0:31:15I think there would be probably just some upgrading that would need doing

0:31:15 > 0:31:20with the tiling, maybe the worktops but overall I think it's really,

0:31:20 > 0:31:21- really lovely.- "Upgrading?"

0:31:23 > 0:31:24Oh, it's a lovely double bedroom.

0:31:24 > 0:31:26Really spacious.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28The feature bay window is really nice,

0:31:28 > 0:31:30it lets all the light into the property.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32OK, so this is the second bedroom to the property.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34Very comfortable sized single bedroom.

0:31:34 > 0:31:38You might struggle to fit a double bed in here but not too bad of an

0:31:38 > 0:31:42issue, I don't think, considering the extra trade off for living space

0:31:42 > 0:31:44- that you have.- In today's market,

0:31:44 > 0:31:47I'd value the property at £170,000.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50But for quick sale, I'd say £160,000.

0:31:50 > 0:31:54I value this property in today's market at £180,000.

0:31:54 > 0:31:58For a quick sale, I'd place this property on the market at £165,000.

0:31:58 > 0:32:02Higher valuations are a great start.

0:32:02 > 0:32:03That's more than we thought.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06That is actually £25,000 more than I thought.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12It's now time to tackle the everyday cost of living.

0:32:13 > 0:32:15- All right.- OK.

0:32:15 > 0:32:16Crunch time.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20We've provided a comparison of living costs

0:32:20 > 0:32:21in Australia and the UK.

0:32:21 > 0:32:25First up, the weekly supermarket shop.

0:32:25 > 0:32:27So you've got your milk in the UK...

0:32:28 > 0:32:30So it's £1.50.

0:32:30 > 0:32:31Oz, £1.08, so it's less.

0:32:31 > 0:32:33- Cheaper, yeah.- That's quite nice.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36Wine's the same. Good, good.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Very important, wine.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41Tomatoes, what's going on with this?

0:32:41 > 0:32:4399p to £2.06.

0:32:43 > 0:32:45- Yeah.- So it's £1.07 more expensive.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47They just want us to be fat.

0:32:47 > 0:32:53Minus £73.52 equals £17.09 a week.

0:32:53 > 0:32:58That's not actually as bad as I thought.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02An extra £74 per month hasn't fazed them but what about the bigger

0:33:02 > 0:33:04- outgoings? - Here's the one, here's the killer.

0:33:04 > 0:33:06Basing their sums on the first property,

0:33:06 > 0:33:09their monthly mortgage would increase by over a third.

0:33:09 > 0:33:15..point 41 equals £142.59

0:33:15 > 0:33:18more expensive in Oz.

0:33:18 > 0:33:19Electricity.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22- Cheaper.- That's a shock.

0:33:22 > 0:33:24- Minus seven.- That is a shock.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26You thought it'd be more expensive?

0:33:26 > 0:33:28I thought it was going to be double.

0:33:28 > 0:33:29- What?!- Hair.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33Sorry, babe.

0:33:33 > 0:33:35What?!

0:33:35 > 0:33:37You're going to have to shave your hair off.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39Point 59...

0:33:39 > 0:33:41That's £22.94 more.

0:33:43 > 0:33:48Their sums show overall they'd spend more than £250 extra per

0:33:48 > 0:33:52month in Australia. Just over £3,000 every year.

0:33:52 > 0:33:53Unhappy face.

0:33:53 > 0:33:55SHE TUTS

0:33:56 > 0:34:00- Yeah.- The figures are disappointing but, as a student,

0:34:00 > 0:34:03Simon doesn't have any income in the UK,

0:34:03 > 0:34:07so factoring in his wage in Australia and Jane's potential increase in earnings,

0:34:07 > 0:34:11the couple discover they could actually be staggeringly better off

0:34:11 > 0:34:13in Oz.

0:34:15 > 0:34:23£31,461.24

0:34:23 > 0:34:25per year better off in Australia.

0:34:27 > 0:34:29That deserves a big smiley on the paper, I think.

0:34:30 > 0:34:34With that kind of money, they wouldn't need to scrimp on anything.

0:34:34 > 0:34:37You can get your hair done after all.

0:34:37 > 0:34:39You can fly home as often as you want.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43Chuffed?

0:34:43 > 0:34:45Is this right?

0:34:45 > 0:34:47- Wow.- It's right.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50No prizes for guessing how this vote turns out.

0:34:54 > 0:34:55BOTH: Australia.

0:34:57 > 0:34:59Yay. Couldn't be anything else, really, could it?

0:34:59 > 0:35:02- No.- And I was amazed by how much the difference was.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04Yeah. I bet that's made your day, hasn't it?

0:35:04 > 0:35:08It has. Four down, 3-1 at the moment, if you're keeping score,

0:35:08 > 0:35:09which I obviously am.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19With Jane's third vote for Australia,

0:35:19 > 0:35:23Simon's half-century dream is tantalisingly close.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28But moving would mean breaking bonds with loved ones in the UK.

0:35:29 > 0:35:33And he knows for Jane that could still prove too much to bear.

0:35:34 > 0:35:38We've prepared a DVD of messages from friends and family back home.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41I think it's going to be hard for me...

0:35:42 > 0:35:43..to see this bit.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47It might be you that's crying like a girl and I'm sitting looking at

0:35:47 > 0:35:50- you, you never know.- You know I'm far too hard to do that.

0:35:50 > 0:35:51Yeah!

0:35:53 > 0:35:55- Tell me when you're ready, babe. - Just press it.

0:35:56 > 0:36:01Hello, darling, I hope everything is just as you dreamed it would be.

0:36:01 > 0:36:02Hi, Dad. Hi, Jane.

0:36:02 > 0:36:04Hi, Simon. Hi, Jane.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06I hope you're having a lovely, lovely time.

0:36:06 > 0:36:07Hi, guys.

0:36:07 > 0:36:10Jane and Simon are a perfect match.

0:36:10 > 0:36:11They've...

0:36:11 > 0:36:14They're opposites to each other, in my opinion.

0:36:16 > 0:36:18Simon calms Jane down a lot...

0:36:19 > 0:36:20..because Jane is very, er...

0:36:22 > 0:36:23..full-on, shall we say?

0:36:24 > 0:36:25I'll kill her.

0:36:25 > 0:36:27I think Simon can be a little bit shy at times,

0:36:27 > 0:36:30a little bit quiet, and Jane counteracts that

0:36:30 > 0:36:33because she's very, very gregarious.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35She's always right.

0:36:36 > 0:36:40When we have arguments and what have you, she always is right.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43- They bounce off each other well. - Yeah, good banter.

0:36:43 > 0:36:45They've got a similar sense of humour.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47They've got similar interests.

0:36:47 > 0:36:52His politics to my mind are sometimes a little bit dubious...

0:36:52 > 0:36:53Oh, I love her!

0:36:53 > 0:36:57She takes me shopping because I'm housebound otherwise,

0:36:57 > 0:36:59so she does that and that's wonderful.

0:36:59 > 0:37:02Six, seven years or so he's wanted to go to Australia,

0:37:02 > 0:37:05it's no surprise to me, it's been a long time coming.

0:37:05 > 0:37:07I think Jane's going to have a struggle because of her mum,

0:37:07 > 0:37:09who she's very, very close to,

0:37:09 > 0:37:12and of course Simon's leaving the boys behind, Daniel and Connor,

0:37:12 > 0:37:14and that's going to be very hard.

0:37:14 > 0:37:18I don't want my dad to feel like he can't do what he wants to do because

0:37:18 > 0:37:21of sort of me and my little brother.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23I will miss him, of course I'll miss him.

0:37:23 > 0:37:25I think with regards to her mum, you know,

0:37:25 > 0:37:28that's a huge wrench and is going to be a big influence

0:37:28 > 0:37:31on whether or not they actually decide to go or not.

0:37:31 > 0:37:36It's a big shock because I am all of a sudden going to be all on my own.

0:37:37 > 0:37:41Without any hopes at all of ever going to see them.

0:37:43 > 0:37:45So we'll just pray that while I'm still here

0:37:45 > 0:37:49they'll be able to come and see me again.

0:37:49 > 0:37:51We will. We will.

0:37:52 > 0:37:57It will be like losing a limb if they do go because she is just...

0:37:57 > 0:37:59She is just part of me, she is...

0:38:00 > 0:38:03..my life.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06I'm 83 and I've had a wonderful life,

0:38:06 > 0:38:09so it's only fair that she should follow her dream too.

0:38:09 > 0:38:14- Bless her.- I'd much rather they came home but that's probably not going

0:38:14 > 0:38:17- to happen.- The last thing you want is to wake up in 20 years' time

0:38:17 > 0:38:20and think, "Damn, I wish I'd done it then."

0:38:20 > 0:38:23- Yes.- You go for it, mate. You've got our blessing.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26We really don't want you to go because we're going to miss you but...

0:38:26 > 0:38:29be happy, make the right decision for you.

0:38:29 > 0:38:30We will miss you...

0:38:32 > 0:38:34But, hey, that's life.

0:38:34 > 0:38:36- Go for it.- Thank you.

0:38:36 > 0:38:42I am behind you 100% in whatever decision you do make but you do know

0:38:42 > 0:38:46that I love you so much and I'm going to miss you like crazy if you decide to

0:38:46 > 0:38:48- go to Australia. - Please, please, please,

0:38:48 > 0:38:50just do whatever makes you guys happy.

0:38:50 > 0:38:51You've wanted to do it for ages.

0:38:51 > 0:38:53Love you both loads.

0:38:53 > 0:38:57Be very sure, dear, be very, very sure

0:38:57 > 0:39:01and I don't really want you to go, you know that.

0:39:03 > 0:39:04I'll miss her.

0:39:06 > 0:39:07Mam.

0:39:11 > 0:39:12Oh, God.

0:39:12 > 0:39:14Was it as hard as you expected

0:39:14 > 0:39:16- or harder?- It was worse.- Worse.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19I just want a magic button that I can press

0:39:19 > 0:39:22- and everybody comes, too. - They all come with us.

0:39:22 > 0:39:24That would be nice, wouldn't it?

0:39:28 > 0:39:30JANE EXHALES DEEPLY

0:39:38 > 0:39:42The prospect of leaving family and friends has always been a stumbling

0:39:42 > 0:39:45block for Jane and hearing heartfelt

0:39:45 > 0:39:49messages from home has only magnified her concerns,

0:39:49 > 0:39:53so as their final vote edges closer,

0:39:53 > 0:39:58will Jane's strong emotional ties be what ultimately prevents Simon from

0:39:58 > 0:40:01securing the life he's dreamt of for so long?

0:40:02 > 0:40:05For Simon, the week down under has been the culmination of decades of dreaming.

0:40:05 > 0:40:11For me, Australia has been everything I expected and more

0:40:11 > 0:40:12and I want to live here

0:40:12 > 0:40:14but I want Jane with me.

0:40:14 > 0:40:17But the trial week's also reinforced for Jane

0:40:17 > 0:40:19what she would be sacrificing in the UK.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24Seeing the friends and family

0:40:24 > 0:40:27was quite simply horrendous for me.

0:40:27 > 0:40:33I feel that whichever way I go now, I'm letting somebody down.

0:40:33 > 0:40:36Simon knows Jane's feeling torn.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38Yesterday, I would have put money on it,

0:40:38 > 0:40:42today, not so certain and I understand why.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48I know time is ticking and, you know, but...

0:40:49 > 0:40:53There's just so much whizzing round my head at the minute.

0:40:53 > 0:40:55It's a 50-50, I really...

0:40:55 > 0:40:59I really don't know... I really don't know.

0:40:59 > 0:41:02I'm not coming out to Australia without her, so it will be the UK,

0:41:02 > 0:41:04we stay in the UK.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07Whichever decision I make,

0:41:07 > 0:41:09I'm going to stick with it.

0:41:09 > 0:41:11It's been a make-or-break week for Simon and

0:41:11 > 0:41:13it's now time to vote.

0:41:13 > 0:41:17His dream rests on the final turn of the cards.

0:41:17 > 0:41:18It's been a big week,

0:41:18 > 0:41:22we've had a lot of fun and now we need to vote on where we're going to live.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40BOTH: Australia!

0:41:40 > 0:41:42JANE LAUGHS

0:41:45 > 0:41:46I love you.

0:41:48 > 0:41:50I just thought,

0:41:50 > 0:41:52"Where do you want to be when you grow old...er?"

0:41:52 > 0:41:55And, erm...

0:41:55 > 0:41:58I want to be here, I want to do this.

0:41:58 > 0:42:00I'm going to break me mum and Sam's heart...

0:42:02 > 0:42:06..but it was always going to hurt somebody and I did it for me.

0:42:06 > 0:42:09Relieved. I'm delighted.

0:42:09 > 0:42:11And, gosh, I love you so much.

0:42:11 > 0:42:15There's a heck of a lot to sort out and I'm not

0:42:15 > 0:42:17coming here until it's done

0:42:17 > 0:42:21but it's doable and we can sort it

0:42:21 > 0:42:23- and it's where I want to be.- Yup.

0:42:23 > 0:42:27We'll make sure everything is right, we'll do it.
