0:00:03 > 0:00:07The Kelly family want a new life in New Zealand.
0:00:07 > 0:00:09We really do need to think about doing it now
0:00:09 > 0:00:12before everything becomes just a bit too much,
0:00:12 > 0:00:13I think, to take on.
0:00:13 > 0:00:17Taking life a little bit slower and having a little bit more fun.
0:00:17 > 0:00:19And they've got the money to afford it.
0:00:19 > 0:00:23- Look at the view, Josh!- I can really see ourselves living here.
0:00:23 > 0:00:26I wouldn't buy this house. I'm not taken by it.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30- You've got your dishwasher! - HE LAUGHS
0:00:30 > 0:00:32You're my dishwasher, that's fine!
0:00:32 > 0:00:36But with a loving family back home willing them to stay...
0:00:36 > 0:00:38I can't lie to them and say I'm happy.
0:00:38 > 0:00:39I don't want them to go, you know?
0:00:39 > 0:00:41That's it... That's the way it is and it's just...
0:00:41 > 0:00:44You've just got to live with it, haven't you?
0:00:44 > 0:00:46To let them go and have their own lives and be happy.
0:00:46 > 0:00:51This could be a battle of heart versus head.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53If we moved over here and I started a business,
0:00:53 > 0:00:55it certainly looks promising.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59Really disappointing, yeah.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24Voted one of the best places in the world to bring up a family,
0:01:24 > 0:01:28it's not hard to understand why almost 9,000 UK residents
0:01:28 > 0:01:31make the move to New Zealand every year.
0:01:31 > 0:01:35Add to that its outstanding natural beauty and temperate climate
0:01:35 > 0:01:38and it's no wonder it's such a desirable destination
0:01:38 > 0:01:41for those seeking a better life.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44The Kelly family from Aberdeen love the outdoor life
0:01:44 > 0:01:47they have in the Scottish Granite City
0:01:47 > 0:01:50and now wonder whether New Zealand could offer such
0:01:50 > 0:01:53a lifestyle all year round.
0:01:53 > 0:01:57Across one week, they'll get to see the sort of life they could lead
0:01:57 > 0:02:00and afford if they relocated down under,
0:02:00 > 0:02:04before voting on whether to make the move.
0:02:04 > 0:02:07The Kellys' journey to New Zealand has taken three flights
0:02:07 > 0:02:09and almost as many days in the air.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13We left on Sunday. It's now Tuesday?
0:02:13 > 0:02:16- Tuesday.- We've somehow lost 30-something hours,
0:02:16 > 0:02:18but the kids were brilliant.
0:02:18 > 0:02:19It's never easy travelling that far, but...
0:02:19 > 0:02:21Long, but happy to be here.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24Both Hollie and Gilan have made the trip before,
0:02:24 > 0:02:26but this time it's very different.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29The last time we were in New Zealand it was just the two of us,
0:02:29 > 0:02:31no children, no baggage.
0:02:31 > 0:02:34I think there was probably a bit of nerves as we flew in,
0:02:34 > 0:02:38seeing all these houses and looking at them very differently to the last
0:02:38 > 0:02:40few times we've flown into New Zealand, as well.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42We both see ourselves living here
0:02:42 > 0:02:46and I suppose it's nerve-racking because
0:02:46 > 0:02:48if we really like it, it might mean uprooting,
0:02:48 > 0:02:51which is the nerve-racking part, the scary part,
0:02:51 > 0:02:52but it's also very exciting.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Yeah, just really excited to see what the week holds.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58The family set off on a journey which could decide on which side of
0:02:58 > 0:03:01the world their future lies.
0:03:06 > 0:03:07Meet the Kellys.
0:03:07 > 0:03:11They are dad Gilan, mum Hollie and children Harris,
0:03:11 > 0:03:14Joshua and much-loved family pet Honey.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17On the face of it, they want for nothing at all -
0:03:17 > 0:03:20a nice big house, a successful outdoor adventure business
0:03:20 > 0:03:24- and an especially loving extended family.- We do have a good life.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26100%. We've a great life.
0:03:26 > 0:03:31Fantastic kids, great house, nice area, really successful businesses.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33Now in their late 20s, however,
0:03:33 > 0:03:37they're asking themselves whether they're living to work or working to live.
0:03:37 > 0:03:40We've both thought about New Zealand considerably
0:03:40 > 0:03:41for a number of years.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43It's not something that's just crept up suddenly.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46It's always been in the back of our minds that maybe one day
0:03:46 > 0:03:50we would have a better work-life balance so we can spend a little
0:03:50 > 0:03:52more time with each other and the kids.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55I think we're probably victims of our own success a bit
0:03:55 > 0:03:58in that we've just, over the last five years,
0:03:58 > 0:04:01taken more and more and more on and, before we know it,
0:04:01 > 0:04:04we're now at this point where it's completely unsustainable
0:04:04 > 0:04:07if we want to actually spend time with the children
0:04:07 > 0:04:10and grow the businesses. That can't happen.
0:04:10 > 0:04:14Taking life a little bit slower and having a little bit more fun.
0:04:14 > 0:04:17Together, they've decided that New Zealand could be the answer.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19We do lots of things with the kids.
0:04:19 > 0:04:2299% of the time it's outside.
0:04:22 > 0:04:26Being able to kind of have the flexibility to be spontaneous
0:04:26 > 0:04:29and go out and go to the beach when it's nice weather
0:04:29 > 0:04:32and have that flexibility, that's a really big draw, isn't it?
0:04:32 > 0:04:35Yeah, huge. With New Zealand, well, with the climate the way it is,
0:04:35 > 0:04:38you get seasons, which is fantastic.
0:04:38 > 0:04:42We love the idea of having a harsh winter along with a lovely summer,
0:04:42 > 0:04:45whereas you never know in Scotland what you're going to get, you know?
0:04:45 > 0:04:49It could be just rain every day of the week for six months.
0:04:49 > 0:04:53- 12 months of grey. - Yeah, absolutely.- Yeah.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55But with the children reaching a crucial age
0:04:55 > 0:04:58and baby three on the way, time is of the essence.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02Now is the right time I think for us, because you know,
0:05:02 > 0:05:04the kids are starting to grow up.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07I'd be really concerned about leaving it ten years and then having
0:05:07 > 0:05:10children who are really embedded in the community
0:05:10 > 0:05:12and have lots of friends and play in the teams
0:05:12 > 0:05:13and whatever else they get up to.
0:05:13 > 0:05:15I think with baby number three, as well,
0:05:15 > 0:05:17it's only going to get more difficult,
0:05:17 > 0:05:20so we really do need to think about doing it now before everything
0:05:20 > 0:05:23becomes just a bit too much, I think, to take on.
0:05:23 > 0:05:25So what is holding them back?
0:05:25 > 0:05:28Well, family of course.
0:05:28 > 0:05:32In particular, Gilan's dad, who he has recently got back in touch with.
0:05:32 > 0:05:36In the last couple of years I've just recently got back in touch
0:05:36 > 0:05:40with my dad, so, no, it's been really nice rekindling
0:05:40 > 0:05:45that relationship that was never really there from a younger age.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47That worries me a little bit,
0:05:47 > 0:05:50that maybe he doesn't realise quite what he could be missing out on
0:05:50 > 0:05:53because he hasn't had it, so he doesn't necessarily attach the same
0:05:53 > 0:05:57- value to it, so...- The realisation now that, you know,
0:05:57 > 0:06:01it's potentially going to happen could just be hitting home.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04With Hollie, meanwhile, with her only brother already emigrated,
0:06:04 > 0:06:07it's Mum who'd be left behind.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10She brought the both of us up as a single parent,
0:06:10 > 0:06:12so I have a really close relationship to her
0:06:12 > 0:06:14and so do our kids, as well.
0:06:16 > 0:06:19So it would be really, really difficult
0:06:19 > 0:06:22leaving her and feeling like we'd both kind of abandoned her
0:06:22 > 0:06:24to the other side of the world.
0:06:25 > 0:06:27It's causing us to, I think,
0:06:27 > 0:06:31maybe pause a bit more than we had ever thought we would, actually.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34What's certain is that in the trial week ahead,
0:06:34 > 0:06:37they'll both have to like what they see to make the move.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40- Maybe.- I can't see either one of us forcing the other to go for it.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42Do you know, that's really funny?
0:06:42 > 0:06:45- I was going to say the opposite! - You were going to say the opposite?
0:06:45 > 0:06:47I was going to say, but for the same reasons,
0:06:47 > 0:06:49- I was going to say we are really supportive of each other.- Yeah.
0:06:49 > 0:06:52And, actually, like, if you really wanted to do it and I was
0:06:52 > 0:06:54on the fence, I would do it anyway.
0:06:54 > 0:06:56Like, what's the worst that can happen?
0:06:56 > 0:06:58We're just going to go there and actually decide that I was right all
0:06:58 > 0:07:01- along and come home. - Yeah, the worst thing that could
0:07:01 > 0:07:03happen is that I was wrong and then that's bad.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08The Kellys are spending their week in Karori.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11It may be one of Wellington's oldest suburbs.
0:07:11 > 0:07:14And, as they unpack, they get the chance to talk about their first
0:07:14 > 0:07:18impressions of the area they'll be spending their week.
0:07:18 > 0:07:22The drive up here was really pretty, really breathtaking.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25The house itself probably isn't very practical,
0:07:25 > 0:07:27it's not what we would look for in a family home.
0:07:27 > 0:07:30Different levels, I think that would be a problem for us with the kids,
0:07:30 > 0:07:34but, again, the views and where it's located are just gorgeous.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36Really, really nice.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38And it seems they've come prepared.
0:07:38 > 0:07:39We've done our research, obviously,
0:07:39 > 0:07:42and had a look around the area around Wellington,
0:07:42 > 0:07:45know where all the schools are and all the good suburbs, so, yeah,
0:07:45 > 0:07:49it will be really interesting to see if we view anything
0:07:49 > 0:07:51relevant to what I think we should be looking at.
0:07:51 > 0:07:53- I'm looking forward to it.- Yeah.
0:07:53 > 0:07:54Yeah, I'm really looking forward, yeah.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57I don't think we're hard to please. We don't have a massive list.
0:07:57 > 0:07:59It's just that there are some non-negotiables,
0:07:59 > 0:08:02which are outside space and a family
0:08:02 > 0:08:05friendly inner suburb that has a good school. That's it.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08The week ahead will have to deliver if the couple's dream
0:08:08 > 0:08:12of a fresh start down under is to become a reality.
0:08:16 > 0:08:21Back in the UK, the Kellys currently have the best of both worlds.
0:08:21 > 0:08:27So we live in a small, kind of rural village just now,
0:08:27 > 0:08:29not too far from the city and that's
0:08:29 > 0:08:31definitely something that's important
0:08:31 > 0:08:33if we made the move to New Zealand.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36Having recently sold their family home, they are currently,
0:08:36 > 0:08:39and very happily, renting.
0:08:39 > 0:08:42The house that we're in is absolutely fantastic.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45- Yeah, it's really nice.- Lots of space, just exactly what we need.
0:08:47 > 0:08:49I like the rural feel.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51We like having the space.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54Yeah, a great family home, so that's something that we
0:08:54 > 0:08:56definitely would look to emulate when we're
0:08:56 > 0:08:59out in New Zealand. We need a decent number of rooms as well, actually,
0:08:59 > 0:09:02because, obviously, moving away, we need the ability
0:09:02 > 0:09:04to have family come and stay.
0:09:04 > 0:09:08And while size definitely matters for them, they're not too fussy.
0:09:08 > 0:09:12Really neither of us get the big fuss about, "Oh, my goodness,
0:09:12 > 0:09:14"look at the decor or look at those floors."
0:09:14 > 0:09:16We're not bothered at all by
0:09:16 > 0:09:19- the walk-in wardrobes or...- His and her sinks.- ..his and hers sinks
0:09:19 > 0:09:22or any of that kind of rubbish.
0:09:23 > 0:09:27But one thing is essential - for Gilan at least.
0:09:27 > 0:09:28Yeah, oh!
0:09:28 > 0:09:31- Yeah.- Absolutely, yeah.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33A garage, yeah, that's it.
0:09:33 > 0:09:35And their budget for all this?
0:09:35 > 0:09:40A budget of round about £400,000, but you never know,
0:09:40 > 0:09:43we could go above if we find our dream home.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45- Yeah.- And just change the way, juggle the way that we do things.
0:09:45 > 0:09:48Hm-hm.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51To find out what this might get them on the Wellington property market,
0:09:51 > 0:09:53we'll show them three houses -
0:09:53 > 0:09:58two on budget and a third which could be their dream home.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01The search begins in the suburb of Whitby,
0:10:01 > 0:10:03just a 20-minute drive north of Wellington.
0:10:03 > 0:10:07With great schools and a strong community spirit,
0:10:07 > 0:10:10it's got that family-friendly feel they're after.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14But will this three-bedroom family home be fit for purpose?
0:10:15 > 0:10:17It's got a big driveway.
0:10:17 > 0:10:19Oh, this is perfect.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22Well, it's a thumbs up on first impressions.
0:10:22 > 0:10:25Lots of big family houses so that's nice.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28And really nice quiet street so that's really positive too.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30Definitely, the house looks really nice.
0:10:30 > 0:10:32Really big from the outside, so excited.
0:10:32 > 0:10:35Inside, meanwhile, continues to impress.
0:10:35 > 0:10:37Wow, look at this.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40Wow. This looks really big.
0:10:40 > 0:10:44Yes. Nice new carpets, quite like neutral.
0:10:44 > 0:10:48And the main family dining area seems to have the wow factor, too.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50Wow, this is nice, isn't it?
0:10:51 > 0:10:54Oh, wow. Look at the views, Josh.
0:10:54 > 0:10:57- Huge room, this is. - Time to check out the kitchen.
0:10:57 > 0:10:59Let's have a look at this.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01Ooh, all integrated appliances as well, that's quite good.
0:11:01 > 0:11:04- Got your dishwasher. - HE LAUGHS
0:11:04 > 0:11:07- You're my dishwasher! - SHE LAUGHS
0:11:07 > 0:11:09What a cheek!
0:11:09 > 0:11:12There might even be room for a new addition to the family.
0:11:12 > 0:11:15- Who would use that door, Joshy? - A pussycat.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17Yeah. Ooh.
0:11:17 > 0:11:23Well, so far so good seems to be the verdict.
0:11:23 > 0:11:24Until...
0:11:24 > 0:11:26What's here, Joshy?
0:11:26 > 0:11:28It's a bedroom.
0:11:28 > 0:11:30Master bedroom.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33Oh, with an en-suite.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37- Decoration is a bit interesting. - THEY LAUGH
0:11:37 > 0:11:39Salmon pink.
0:11:39 > 0:11:43A bit dated, you'd want to change that I think.
0:11:43 > 0:11:47- Definitely.- It's OK, I wouldn't buy this house.
0:11:47 > 0:11:51I'm not taken by it, it's not really doing anything for me.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54It's not for us. I don't think I'd buy it.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57Well, that went downhill quickly.
0:11:57 > 0:11:59Time to leave the children with a child-minder
0:11:59 > 0:12:01so Gilan and Hollie can take a closer look.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04But the bathroom doesn't improve things.
0:12:05 > 0:12:08- That's gone. - THEY LAUGH
0:12:10 > 0:12:12- I couldn't agree more. - It's pink.
0:12:12 > 0:12:16- I'm sure somebody would like a pink tiled bath but...- Not us.- ..not me.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19- No. - THEY LAUGH
0:12:19 > 0:12:23And the lack of space for visitors makes matters worse.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25I think it's a non-negotiable, isn't it?
0:12:25 > 0:12:27Having space for relatives to come and stay.
0:12:27 > 0:12:29If we're moving out here we need space for family and friends
0:12:29 > 0:12:31- to come and stay.- At least there's
0:12:31 > 0:12:33something to put a smile on Gilan's face.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36- Good-sized garage.- I'm not going to argue with the garage space,
0:12:36 > 0:12:38this is really good. This is exactly what a man needs.
0:12:38 > 0:12:41- I would never see you again. - No, not at all. Absolutely.
0:12:41 > 0:12:43The garage space is perfect.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46But outside, well, it's just not what the Kellys want.
0:12:46 > 0:12:48Oh, it's not very private at all, look.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51- True.- Yeah, really overlooked.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54- And not as big as it looks.- No.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56I'd want something a bit bigger
0:12:56 > 0:12:58for the boys to run around and roll about on.
0:12:58 > 0:13:01Yeah, a little bit more privacy as well.
0:13:01 > 0:13:02This garden's a bit overlooked.
0:13:02 > 0:13:05Despite some pleasing elements, overall,
0:13:05 > 0:13:10this property has failed to live up to the Kellys' hopes for a Kiwi home.
0:13:10 > 0:13:14But if the asking price is under their £400,000 budget,
0:13:14 > 0:13:15will it make a difference?
0:13:15 > 0:13:18I definitely think it's at the lower end of our budget or just below.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21I think this house is probably on
0:13:21 > 0:13:27the market for about £375,000.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30£395,000.
0:13:30 > 0:13:33- OK, let's have a look. You can do it.- OK.
0:13:35 > 0:13:40- £370,000.- I think that's right where we thought it would be.
0:13:40 > 0:13:43It's definitely a good sign, given
0:13:43 > 0:13:46that it's less than our lower end of the budget, which is good.
0:13:46 > 0:13:48And way below the top end of the budget.
0:13:48 > 0:13:50And way below the top end of the budget.
0:13:50 > 0:13:52- On to property number two, I think. - Cool.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59Not exactly the best of starts.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02Let's hope property number two can get things back on track.
0:14:02 > 0:14:06It's in Aotea, also just a short commute to Wellington.
0:14:06 > 0:14:09This suburb on the Kapiti Coast is fast becoming a place
0:14:09 > 0:14:14where work and home life balance come hand-in-hand.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16Boasting five bedrooms and three bathrooms,
0:14:16 > 0:14:21this modern family home should offer all the space the couple need.
0:14:21 > 0:14:24And even on the drive up, it is positive vibes.
0:14:24 > 0:14:28Big driveway. Room for a couple of cars.
0:14:28 > 0:14:30I'm really excited about this one.
0:14:30 > 0:14:32Much more positive feel about this one.
0:14:32 > 0:14:37- Yeah.- Time to get inside. - This is much nicer.
0:14:37 > 0:14:40At least it's not that pink, thank goodness!
0:14:40 > 0:14:44- I like this.- It's nice open-plan. - Oh, yes.
0:14:44 > 0:14:46This is exactly the type of space we're looking for.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49Yeah, much better. And modern, isn't it?
0:14:49 > 0:14:51Really clean.
0:14:51 > 0:14:54Yeah, really nice. Nice kitchen, really nice, light and airy.
0:14:54 > 0:14:58Really well decorated as well. Can really see ourselves living here.
0:14:58 > 0:15:00- You could just move straight in, couldn't you?- Yeah.
0:15:00 > 0:15:04Looks like quite nice views as well. I think the views are going to be really nice upstairs.
0:15:04 > 0:15:06Absolutely, can't wait to see up there.
0:15:06 > 0:15:10On to the downstairs bedroom and Hollie is already thinking about
0:15:10 > 0:15:12converting it into something this
0:15:12 > 0:15:14business-minded pair definitely need.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17Oh, a nice, light room.
0:15:17 > 0:15:21- Really nice.- It's screaming out to me, office, actually.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23Because it is tucked out of the way,
0:15:23 > 0:15:26but not so out of the way you couldn't hear the kids playing.
0:15:26 > 0:15:29That's true. Without seeing the rest of the house, actually,
0:15:29 > 0:15:32it kind of makes sense. You've got a nice view at the side there as well.
0:15:32 > 0:15:34As with best laid plans, however...
0:15:36 > 0:15:39- THEY LAUGH - OK, no.
0:15:39 > 0:15:41Maybe this will be the office.
0:15:41 > 0:15:43Maybe this'll be the office, actually, yeah.
0:15:43 > 0:15:48Upstairs and the main bedroom seems to have exactly what a girl wants.
0:15:49 > 0:15:53Let's see. I'm guessing this is the master bedroom.
0:15:53 > 0:15:58- Yeah, definitely.- A big wardrobe. There you go, that's you happy.
0:15:58 > 0:16:00Somewhere to hang up all your clothes.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03- Cool.- This is nice, though.
0:16:03 > 0:16:07- Good to have an en-suite.- Yeah, always good to have an en-suite.
0:16:07 > 0:16:11So, how are the rest of the family going to keep clean?
0:16:12 > 0:16:14Oh, this is nice.
0:16:14 > 0:16:17It's a family bathroom.
0:16:17 > 0:16:18Nice space. No bath, though.
0:16:18 > 0:16:22Well, it's big enough to be able to have a bath.
0:16:22 > 0:16:26Even if you have a bath with an over-shower, that will be fine.
0:16:26 > 0:16:28Everything you can ask for in a bathroom.
0:16:28 > 0:16:31- Apart from a bath. - Apart from a bath.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33- THEY LAUGH - Cool.
0:16:33 > 0:16:36With an ever-expanding family,
0:16:36 > 0:16:39this five bedroom property seems to have the sort of space
0:16:39 > 0:16:41the Kellys are looking for.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44But a quick detour into what they hope might be a spare bedroom,
0:16:44 > 0:16:48instead unveils a very disappointing view.
0:16:48 > 0:16:52Outside. I think, maybe, the neighbours look onto the garden.
0:16:52 > 0:16:53That could be a bit of an issue.
0:16:53 > 0:16:56The garden doesn't seem to be very big.
0:16:56 > 0:16:58- It's tiny.- Not as much as we'd expect.
0:16:58 > 0:16:59So disappointing, though, isn't it?
0:16:59 > 0:17:01Because the house is absolutely gorgeous.
0:17:01 > 0:17:06- It's perfect.- So it's got the indoor space they wanted, but falling short
0:17:06 > 0:17:08on outdoor space for the children
0:17:08 > 0:17:10has left the couple feeling disenchanted.
0:17:10 > 0:17:12Really disappointing. Yeah.
0:17:13 > 0:17:16Is it somewhere they could afford to live anyway?
0:17:16 > 0:17:20Their budget is £400,000.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23So compared to the first house, this one's got to be
0:17:23 > 0:17:24substantially more expensive.
0:17:24 > 0:17:27It's got to be a lot more expensive, definitely.
0:17:27 > 0:17:32So I think this one's going to be more like 480, 490.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34£490,000.
0:17:34 > 0:17:39I think this house will be around about £470,000.
0:17:39 > 0:17:40OK, let's find out.
0:17:44 > 0:17:48Oh. So £420,000.
0:17:48 > 0:17:50- Wow.- I'm really shocked.
0:17:50 > 0:17:53I'm quite surprised, absolutely.
0:17:53 > 0:17:57- Much cheaper than both of us thought.- Yeah.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02Despite some positive reactions to this house,
0:18:02 > 0:18:05the couple still haven't found what they're looking for
0:18:05 > 0:18:07and there's just one property to go.
0:18:07 > 0:18:12The final stop of the day is the coastal suburb of Parramatta -
0:18:12 > 0:18:15an established neighbourhood with outstanding views alongside great
0:18:15 > 0:18:18transport links and excellent schools,
0:18:18 > 0:18:21it could prove the ideal location.
0:18:21 > 0:18:23But will this four-bedroom family home
0:18:23 > 0:18:25have the space both inside and out
0:18:25 > 0:18:27the couple are desperate for?
0:18:29 > 0:18:31- Steep driveway. - HE LAUGHS
0:18:31 > 0:18:33It might just be an uphill struggle
0:18:33 > 0:18:37if Hollie's initial reactions are anything to go by.
0:18:37 > 0:18:40I feel really bad. I'm not feeling this.
0:18:40 > 0:18:43Really? I wanted, like, country space.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46Let's hope things improve indoors.
0:18:46 > 0:18:48- JOSH MUMBLES - Look at the view.
0:18:48 > 0:18:50Joshua, look at the view.
0:18:50 > 0:18:53That's an incredibly nice view from a living room, isn't it, Josh?
0:18:53 > 0:18:55I love the view.
0:18:55 > 0:18:59Encouraging, but appearances can be deceptive.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02If I'm being totally honest, I'm really disappointed.
0:19:02 > 0:19:04I wanted to be out, I don't know,
0:19:04 > 0:19:08out in the country a bit more, I think.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10Gilan, on the other hand, seems more positive.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12It's a nice view of the front and
0:19:12 > 0:19:14there is a really nice view at the back.
0:19:14 > 0:19:16You wouldn't mind washing the dishes at this sink.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18THEY LAUGH
0:19:18 > 0:19:20The main bedroom, meanwhile,
0:19:20 > 0:19:22provides more of those incredible views.
0:19:24 > 0:19:28It's really nice and big. I thought the views were good downstairs.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31- HE LAUGHS - Gorgeous. You can see right along the coast.
0:19:31 > 0:19:34And a little balcony, look.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36Wow.
0:19:36 > 0:19:39Could Hollie be starting to come round?
0:19:39 > 0:19:42This room alone is really gorgeous.
0:19:42 > 0:19:45I think it's going to have a big price tag with it.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47Mm, maybe.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50The bathroom is...cosy.
0:19:50 > 0:19:55It's quite a small bathroom for such a big house, isn't it?
0:19:55 > 0:19:59There's not a lot of room to get them in and out of the bath and dry.
0:19:59 > 0:20:03But it does have a bath. It's more than the last house had.
0:20:05 > 0:20:10So, does this house have the sort of outside space the Kellys want?
0:20:10 > 0:20:12- Look at the view, Josh. - Can you see that?
0:20:14 > 0:20:17It's not a small garden, it's not like a teeny, tiny garden.
0:20:17 > 0:20:21It's just that...some of the properties we've seen online
0:20:21 > 0:20:24before have had a lot more space than this.
0:20:24 > 0:20:28All of which is producing seriously mixed feelings.
0:20:28 > 0:20:31I think I'm feeling really torn after this house.
0:20:31 > 0:20:34- Torn?- Yes.- It seems a bit of a waste having such a beautiful house
0:20:34 > 0:20:37in a beautiful spot with, you know,
0:20:37 > 0:20:40everybody looking in your kitchen window.
0:20:40 > 0:20:43I'm pretty sure it's going to be top of our budget...if not above.
0:20:44 > 0:20:46So, should we turn it over?
0:20:46 > 0:20:48- Yeah, let's do it.- The couple are
0:20:48 > 0:20:51torn on this house, but if the price falls
0:20:51 > 0:20:55on the right side of their £400,000 budget, could they be swayed?
0:20:57 > 0:21:02Price is, £470,000.
0:21:02 > 0:21:06- Oh.- Oh.- Still don't want to buy it.
0:21:08 > 0:21:12I think, if anything, it just shows us that the house with the view and
0:21:12 > 0:21:15the size of a house that's here is
0:21:15 > 0:21:18sometimes a little bit cheaper than even back home.
0:21:18 > 0:21:22- We know what we're looking for is definitely going to be attainable. - Definitely.
0:21:22 > 0:21:24Even though the price didn't put them off,
0:21:24 > 0:21:29the couple are still holding out for the perfect outdoor space.
0:21:29 > 0:21:33It's been a mixed bag of a day on the property friend.
0:21:33 > 0:21:35House one was positively pink
0:21:35 > 0:21:39and didn't have the visitors space Gilan and Hollie need.
0:21:39 > 0:21:44And while the garage was generous, the garden was not what they wanted.
0:21:45 > 0:21:48Modern styling in the spacious second home impressed
0:21:48 > 0:21:50and although there was no bath
0:21:50 > 0:21:53and the closeness of neighbours was a concern,
0:21:53 > 0:21:56would a lower-than-expected price give pause for thought?
0:21:58 > 0:22:02Thee views and garden of property three won Gilan over and the indoor
0:22:02 > 0:22:04space impressed Hollie.
0:22:04 > 0:22:08But were they won over by the location?
0:22:08 > 0:22:11So based on everything they've seen, how will the couple vote
0:22:11 > 0:22:14when it comes to choosing between property
0:22:14 > 0:22:16in New Zealand and the UK?
0:22:17 > 0:22:19Despite seeing the three houses,
0:22:19 > 0:22:22I don't think any of them were really suitable for us today.
0:22:22 > 0:22:25I do think the right property is out there for us
0:22:25 > 0:22:29within our budget with the extra outside space.
0:22:29 > 0:22:31We just haven't found it yet.
0:22:31 > 0:22:33So based on that I guess we'll vote.
0:22:41 > 0:22:43- BOTH:- New Zealand.
0:22:43 > 0:22:46I think we can definitely get a property we are looking for here.
0:22:46 > 0:22:48- Yes. Within budget.- Yeah, within budget.
0:22:48 > 0:22:50We just need to look a little bit further out.
0:22:58 > 0:23:01Still convinced they could eventually get their dream home
0:23:01 > 0:23:03in New Zealand within budget,
0:23:03 > 0:23:06the week has got off to a positive start.
0:23:06 > 0:23:09But for a permanent move to become a reality,
0:23:09 > 0:23:12securing well-paid work down under will be key.
0:23:14 > 0:23:19Back in the UK, Gilan and Hollie run a paintball adventure business.
0:23:19 > 0:23:23It's something Gilan is very proud of as he's built it from scratch.
0:23:23 > 0:23:27We run a few different businesses, actually, just now in the UK.
0:23:27 > 0:23:30One of those is an outdoor adventure activity site and over the last
0:23:30 > 0:23:33couple of years we've also gotten into escape games.
0:23:33 > 0:23:36So, essentially, locking people in a room filled with
0:23:36 > 0:23:39puzzles and challenging them to try to and escape
0:23:39 > 0:23:40with 60 minutes on the clock.
0:23:41 > 0:23:45I think if we move to New Zealand we would look to leave our adventure
0:23:45 > 0:23:48activity business here with a manager.
0:23:48 > 0:23:51That would free up a lot of our time, allow us to spend more
0:23:51 > 0:23:54time with the family.
0:23:54 > 0:23:57And if we decided to open more businesses in New Zealand
0:23:57 > 0:24:00then we could choose what we decided to do.
0:24:00 > 0:24:02While Hollie has, in recent years,
0:24:02 > 0:24:05taken a hands-on role with the business,
0:24:05 > 0:24:07her training as an environmental consultant
0:24:07 > 0:24:10is something she might like to pursue further.
0:24:10 > 0:24:15Plan B would definitely focus on me going back into my career path and
0:24:15 > 0:24:19probably supporting the family until we found a niche kind of business
0:24:19 > 0:24:21model Gilan was comfortable starting.
0:24:21 > 0:24:25Both feel, however, that New Zealand is the perfect place to follow their
0:24:25 > 0:24:29- career dreams.- Exciting, really exciting time and an interesting
0:24:29 > 0:24:32potential change for us.
0:24:32 > 0:24:33Completely different change for us.
0:24:35 > 0:24:39Today, the couple set out to discover what opportunities might
0:24:39 > 0:24:41exist for them in New Zealand.
0:24:41 > 0:24:45First, Hollie meets Doctor Julie Hall from one of New Zealand's
0:24:45 > 0:24:47leading natural resources companies.
0:24:47 > 0:24:51So it's a pretty broad job market for environmental scientists.
0:24:51 > 0:24:55We are very open and we have brought in a significant number of people
0:24:55 > 0:24:58from overseas. So we have a very multinational workforce.
0:24:58 > 0:25:01So far so good, but what about the money?
0:25:01 > 0:25:03We'd be looking at somewhere,
0:25:03 > 0:25:0565,000 to 70,000 New Zealand dollars.
0:25:05 > 0:25:10So £36,000 to £40,000 a year for a full-time position.
0:25:10 > 0:25:12That's really interesting to know, actually,
0:25:12 > 0:25:14because that pretty much matches identically
0:25:14 > 0:25:15to what I would expect to earn in the UK.
0:25:15 > 0:25:17And now - the key question.
0:25:17 > 0:25:22One thing that staff really appreciate here is flexibility.
0:25:22 > 0:25:24So being able to start early, finish early,
0:25:24 > 0:25:27balancing off dropping kids off, picking them up.
0:25:27 > 0:25:30I think that's really important to people.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33All sounds promising. But what about Gilan?
0:25:33 > 0:25:36We've arranged for him to meet Rob Lawson who runs
0:25:36 > 0:25:38a busy freight and warehousing business
0:25:38 > 0:25:40covering the lower North Island.
0:25:40 > 0:25:42Not only did he start the business from scratch,
0:25:42 > 0:25:46but he did it after moving here from Scotland many years ago.
0:25:46 > 0:25:49I wanted to start up myself and I thought,
0:25:49 > 0:25:53I'll start up this scheme I'm doing now, the furniture removal.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55I thought I'd do that for a few weeks, just part-time,
0:25:55 > 0:25:58driving a bit in the van with me and a young lad helping me out.
0:25:58 > 0:26:02And now I employ 23 people and have seven vehicles
0:26:02 > 0:26:05and a warehouse, do a bit of storage and stuff like that.
0:26:05 > 0:26:07It's just grown.
0:26:07 > 0:26:10I didn't intend doing it more than six months and it's 26 years now.
0:26:10 > 0:26:13A role model indeed, but what advice
0:26:13 > 0:26:15can he give Gilan about acclimatising?
0:26:15 > 0:26:19When you initially get here, it seems like it's just the same as the
0:26:19 > 0:26:21UK, but there's a lot of subtle differences
0:26:21 > 0:26:23that kind of creep up on you.
0:26:23 > 0:26:25Even the mannerisms of the people,
0:26:25 > 0:26:28the Kiwi outlook tends to be a bit more relaxed.
0:26:28 > 0:26:31You kind of soak it up the longer you are here.
0:26:31 > 0:26:33They're a pretty decent bunch of people.
0:26:33 > 0:26:37And a nice society to work in.
0:26:37 > 0:26:40If Gilan does make the move, he'd want to continue his adventure
0:26:40 > 0:26:44business empire. So he's keen to know more about what sort of market
0:26:44 > 0:26:49- he'll be entering.- The Maori have a lot of say
0:26:49 > 0:26:52in how you run things here, which is quite right, too.
0:26:52 > 0:26:56- They were the indigenous people, they were first here.- Of course.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59It's of great interest to people who come from Europe or the States
0:26:59 > 0:27:02or anywhere like that. It's a wonderful selling point,
0:27:02 > 0:27:04it's certainly something you should embrace.
0:27:04 > 0:27:06And can you get the staff?
0:27:06 > 0:27:08Unemployment is very low in New Zealand at the moment.
0:27:08 > 0:27:11So getting qualified staff in any particular skill
0:27:11 > 0:27:13can be quite difficult.
0:27:13 > 0:27:16It's very much a buyers market from an employee's perspective.
0:27:16 > 0:27:17You might want to take that into account.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20Here in New Zealand, people tend to spend a lot of time obviously
0:27:20 > 0:27:25outdoors. Do you find there are any problems when it comes to asking
0:27:25 > 0:27:28- staff to work at the weekends? - Only in relation to sport.
0:27:28 > 0:27:31A lot of these guys like to play rugby. Rugby is a huge thing here.
0:27:31 > 0:27:34Yeah, the sport can sometimes,
0:27:34 > 0:27:38sometimes interfere with your employment plans.
0:27:38 > 0:27:40Yeah. He's a really interesting guy.
0:27:40 > 0:27:43Obviously, he has a very successful business and
0:27:43 > 0:27:46started himself from nothing and worked his way up.
0:27:46 > 0:27:48So that in itself is quite encouraging.
0:27:48 > 0:27:52Hearing from an expat has obviously helped, so time for Hollie
0:27:52 > 0:27:57to meet one of her own. Jim Roberts works in the Fisheries Department.
0:27:57 > 0:28:02I was just finishing up with a PhD at Imperial College in London and
0:28:02 > 0:28:05someone told me there was a job going here at NIWA.
0:28:05 > 0:28:10So I figured I'd be mad not to apply for it.
0:28:10 > 0:28:13And it's just not environmental science they've got in common.
0:28:13 > 0:28:16Jim also is about to be a parent.
0:28:16 > 0:28:19I suppose what I really love about New Zealand is their connection with
0:28:19 > 0:28:22the outdoors. With that connection to the nature and the environment is
0:28:22 > 0:28:26really strong and it is an important part of the New Zealand identity.
0:28:26 > 0:28:28But what about the practicalities?
0:28:28 > 0:28:33My advice is, if you've got anything that's going to be difficult to deal
0:28:33 > 0:28:35with when you're going for a residency visa
0:28:35 > 0:28:38or something like that, grab as much paperwork as you can
0:28:38 > 0:28:39before you go out of the door, because
0:28:39 > 0:28:42- you're probably going to need it. - SHE LAUGHS
0:28:42 > 0:28:45Doesn't seem to be all that different between the UK
0:28:45 > 0:28:48and New Zealand in terms of prospects for careers.
0:28:48 > 0:28:51And wages are really, really similar as well.
0:28:51 > 0:28:55Time now, however, for Hollie and Gilan to talk about their day.
0:28:55 > 0:28:57- How was your day?- Good, yeah.
0:28:57 > 0:28:59- How was your morning? - It was good, yeah.
0:28:59 > 0:29:00Any surprises?
0:29:00 > 0:29:03I'd like to say yes, but there weren't.
0:29:03 > 0:29:05- That's good though. - It's a good thing.
0:29:05 > 0:29:07If we moved over here and I started a business,
0:29:07 > 0:29:09it certainly looks promising.
0:29:09 > 0:29:13My afternoon was pretty much the same, so no real surprises.
0:29:13 > 0:29:17Prospect-wise, salary, all exactly as we'd sort of envisaged.
0:29:17 > 0:29:20- That's really good. - Yeah, no real surprises.
0:29:20 > 0:29:23- Yeah. Shall we have a vote? - Let's do it.- Sounds great, come on.
0:29:23 > 0:29:28- Let's go.- I think I know which way this might go.
0:29:28 > 0:29:31Based on what we've heard today, our vote goes to...
0:29:37 > 0:29:39- New Zealand.- Undecided.
0:29:39 > 0:29:42Oh! A bit of a surprise from Hollie.
0:29:42 > 0:29:46I feel quite confident in the business sector here.
0:29:46 > 0:29:47So I voted undecided just because I
0:29:47 > 0:29:51don't feel like I really learnt anything new today.
0:29:51 > 0:29:54So after speaking to the gentleman today I strongly believe that
0:29:54 > 0:29:57one of our businesses in particular would work very well here.
0:30:00 > 0:30:04As they enter into the second half of their trial week,
0:30:04 > 0:30:08it feels like there's some work to do if Gilan and Hollie are to be
0:30:08 > 0:30:12convinced that a move to New Zealand is going to be worth it.
0:30:12 > 0:30:15Will a day sampling the active outdoor lifestyle
0:30:15 > 0:30:18they love so much help with their decision?
0:30:20 > 0:30:23The Kellys are a self-professed outdoorsy family,
0:30:23 > 0:30:27so what better way to spend the day than on a bike?
0:30:27 > 0:30:29Electric style, that is.
0:30:30 > 0:30:33Tour guide Ryan, leads the way.
0:30:36 > 0:30:39The only way to travel.
0:30:39 > 0:30:43As super dad flies along the cycle path, the family take in the sights.
0:30:47 > 0:30:50Time to refuel after all that exercise.
0:30:53 > 0:30:56I'm ready. Did you enjoy that? Yeah.
0:30:56 > 0:30:58And there is a nice treat in store.
0:30:58 > 0:31:02- Gilan's dad phones from Scotland. - Hello. Is that Joshy?
0:31:02 > 0:31:06- Is Joshy there? - Yeah, Joshy, say hi.- Hi.
0:31:06 > 0:31:08HE MUMBLES
0:31:08 > 0:31:11- You're having lunch?- Mm-hm. - I'm sat in front of the coal fire
0:31:11 > 0:31:15crackling away just thinking about yous down there in New Zealand.
0:31:15 > 0:31:18Have you learnt anything about moving over?
0:31:18 > 0:31:20Yeah, it's been a good eye-opener.
0:31:20 > 0:31:24We've been to see a good range of properties and the houses
0:31:24 > 0:31:26we went to see weren't what we were looking for.
0:31:26 > 0:31:28We'll make sure we send you lots of pictures.
0:31:28 > 0:31:34I can't wake until you come back. I've missed you already.
0:31:34 > 0:31:36I know, it's kind of weird like that, isn't it?
0:31:36 > 0:31:39But I suppose it's the distance that does that, isn't it?
0:31:39 > 0:31:40When you're just up the road you
0:31:40 > 0:31:42think, "It's not a big deal, you can just nip up."
0:31:42 > 0:31:44A bit further away you kind of think,
0:31:44 > 0:31:46"I can't just go and nip up the road."
0:31:46 > 0:31:50- Say love you lots to Grandpa George. - Love you lots.
0:31:50 > 0:31:54- Love you more! Love you more. - No, you don't, I love you more.
0:31:54 > 0:31:57I love you 100!
0:31:58 > 0:32:01Aw, well that was nice.
0:32:01 > 0:32:04So what are their thoughts halfway through the week?
0:32:05 > 0:32:07So far, we've really enjoyed it.
0:32:07 > 0:32:10The people here are really friendly, really nice.
0:32:10 > 0:32:12When you are here and you are having nice family time,
0:32:12 > 0:32:14we don't get much time off so any time off we do have
0:32:14 > 0:32:17we do tend to try and spend it with friends and family.
0:32:17 > 0:32:18So I guess it does make you reflect
0:32:18 > 0:32:20that it would be nice to have them here.
0:32:20 > 0:32:23Not having the rest of the family to come and enjoy days some days out,
0:32:23 > 0:32:25but they'll be able to come and visit.
0:32:25 > 0:32:27We'd be able to make the most of that time.
0:32:27 > 0:32:29So based on today, will they vote
0:32:29 > 0:32:33for lifestyle in New Zealand or the UK?
0:32:45 > 0:32:47- BOTH:- New Zealand.
0:32:49 > 0:32:52So I voted for New Zealand because of days just like today,
0:32:52 > 0:32:54we love getting out with the kids.
0:32:54 > 0:32:57Weather-wise, we're going to have much more opportunities
0:32:57 > 0:33:00to have days out like that with the kids. And that's really important.
0:33:00 > 0:33:03It's nice just to be able to pick up and go. Create more opportunities
0:33:03 > 0:33:04and hopefully get the boys out and
0:33:04 > 0:33:06it's the things we like doing the most, so...
0:33:06 > 0:33:09THEY LAUGH
0:33:19 > 0:33:21With another vote for New Zealand,
0:33:21 > 0:33:24a permanent move to the other side of the world
0:33:24 > 0:33:28looks like it could become a reality for the Kelly family.
0:33:28 > 0:33:30But only if the finances add up.
0:33:30 > 0:33:34It's time to find out how the cost of living down under
0:33:34 > 0:33:38- compares with the UK.- It'll be super exciting seeing all the numbers, won't it?
0:33:38 > 0:33:41I know. I'm not sure how it's going to go, but we'll see.
0:33:41 > 0:33:44And they start with the weekly shop.
0:33:44 > 0:33:46Anything that's in red is less expensive,
0:33:46 > 0:33:49everything in black is more expensive.
0:33:49 > 0:33:52- Cool.- Porridge, onions, peas...
0:33:52 > 0:33:54Basically, all the fruit.
0:33:54 > 0:33:57Having a quick scan down.
0:33:57 > 0:34:01There's only a few items that are less expensive.
0:34:01 > 0:34:03Like, all the fresh fruit and veg and stuff -
0:34:03 > 0:34:06all more expensive.
0:34:06 > 0:34:09So, shall we add up all of these totals and see what it's going to be
0:34:09 > 0:34:11- difference-wise?- Do you want to do the calculations?
0:34:11 > 0:34:15- Go for it.- There you go. - We will do this.- 556.
0:34:15 > 0:34:21- Yes.- 225. 310. 254. 197.
0:34:21 > 0:34:25254. 789.
0:34:25 > 0:34:28- What was that for?- Chicken breasts. - OK.
0:34:28 > 0:34:29That's quite a big difference.
0:34:31 > 0:34:36So works out to be per month -
0:34:36 > 0:34:40difference of about £101.40p.
0:34:40 > 0:34:44Over a whole year, £1216.80p.
0:34:44 > 0:34:47So bigger bills for food in New Zealand.
0:34:47 > 0:34:49But what about the other costs?
0:34:49 > 0:34:53Mortgage, pretty much the same.
0:34:53 > 0:34:56Council tax, a pound difference.
0:34:56 > 0:34:57So, negligible.
0:34:57 > 0:35:01- Yes. Not much difference. - Electricity is quite a bit cheaper.
0:35:01 > 0:35:03- Quite a lot cheaper, actually. - Half the cost.
0:35:03 > 0:35:05Yep. Mobile phones are much more expensive, so, like...
0:35:05 > 0:35:09- Oh, yeah, massively more expensive. - Yeah, triple the price.
0:35:09 > 0:35:11Yeah. Transport costs - a little bit cheaper here.
0:35:11 > 0:35:13Car insurance and MOT, both cheaper here.
0:35:13 > 0:35:17Home insurance, half the price. And children's nursery, oh, my gosh.
0:35:17 > 0:35:20Children's nursery is massive, look at that!
0:35:20 > 0:35:22So, £1,400 per month is what we
0:35:22 > 0:35:28spend on the boys being in nursery for three days, roughly.
0:35:28 > 0:35:31- And that would only be £600 here. - That's just incredible.
0:35:31 > 0:35:34- I can't believe that difference. - We're getting ripped off!- Yeah!
0:35:34 > 0:35:36THEY LAUGH
0:35:36 > 0:35:38You're not wrong!
0:35:38 > 0:35:39So, total outgoings...
0:35:39 > 0:35:41So, let's see what the difference is, then.
0:35:41 > 0:35:48So, it's a difference of £1,419 per month
0:35:48 > 0:35:51better off in New Zealand. That sounds crazy.
0:35:51 > 0:35:54- I don't know how that's possible. - It's just the childcare!
0:35:54 > 0:35:58- It's the childcare!- It actually is! - Yeah.
0:35:58 > 0:36:01- I wasn't expecting that.- I wasn't expecting that at all.
0:36:02 > 0:36:06Substantially lower childcare costs will help offset some of the higher
0:36:06 > 0:36:10prices Hollie and Gilan expect to pay for the other bills.
0:36:10 > 0:36:11So, how does it all add up?
0:36:13 > 0:36:18So, per month, taking into account our salaries, our outgoings,
0:36:18 > 0:36:21our big bills, our leisure, our food,
0:36:21 > 0:36:24we would in New Zealand be better
0:36:24 > 0:36:28off, to the tune of £1,298 per month.
0:36:28 > 0:36:33- That's a massive figure. - Yeah.- And it just gets better.
0:36:33 > 0:36:37Gilan would continue to draw an income from his UK businesses,
0:36:37 > 0:36:40and if Hollie was to get a job, she'd be earning too.
0:36:40 > 0:36:43So, where does that leave them overall?
0:36:43 > 0:36:44I think it's hard not to be
0:36:44 > 0:36:47satisfied with those kind of numbers. It's really, quite...
0:36:47 > 0:36:50A lot more than... You know, the savings are a lot more than we
0:36:50 > 0:36:54thought they would be. So, it's really reassuring.
0:36:54 > 0:36:58A saving of over 12...well, £1,300 a month is massive.
0:36:58 > 0:37:02That's, erm... Yeah, I don't know what we would do with that.
0:37:02 > 0:37:05- Yeah, absolutely! Well, I do. - Well, yeah, you would buy a boat.
0:37:05 > 0:37:08- Yeah, probably!- Yeah! - THEY LAUGH
0:37:08 > 0:37:10Yeah, at least we'd have plenty
0:37:10 > 0:37:12of money to maybe look at a larger house that
0:37:12 > 0:37:15could incorporate more grandparents visiting.
0:37:15 > 0:37:19- Yeah, definitely.- The favourable figures are opening up options.
0:37:19 > 0:37:23But how will Gilan and Hollie balance their decision?
0:37:25 > 0:37:27- BOTH:- New Zealand.
0:37:27 > 0:37:29I think just based on £1,300 a month,
0:37:29 > 0:37:31that's such a huge amount of money to save.
0:37:31 > 0:37:34Yeah, you just can't ignore the figures, really, can you?
0:37:34 > 0:37:36It's an incredible amount of money.
0:37:40 > 0:37:42While Joshua and Harris take a nap,
0:37:42 > 0:37:45Hollie and Gilan sit down together
0:37:45 > 0:37:48to watch a DVD from loved ones back home.
0:37:48 > 0:37:50- So, are you ready? - Ready as I'll ever be.
0:37:50 > 0:37:53I'm not looking forward to seeing anybody upset.
0:37:53 > 0:37:55Definitely not.
0:37:57 > 0:38:01Hi, Gilan, Hollie, Joshua and Harris.
0:38:01 > 0:38:04- Hi, Hollie.- Hi, Josh!
0:38:04 > 0:38:07As a family, they're brilliant. They're brilliant to their kids,
0:38:07 > 0:38:10Josh and Harris are just so blessed to have them.
0:38:10 > 0:38:13I see them together sometimes and I just think,
0:38:13 > 0:38:15that's the way a family should be.
0:38:15 > 0:38:16They just are a wee team, even the kids.
0:38:16 > 0:38:21They're so, so together, it's fantastic.
0:38:21 > 0:38:24And the two wee ones, well, they're just absolutely gorgeous.
0:38:24 > 0:38:25Love them to bits!
0:38:25 > 0:38:28Gilan's honest, hard-working,
0:38:28 > 0:38:30a really straight down the middle guy,
0:38:30 > 0:38:32you kind of know where you stand with him.
0:38:32 > 0:38:36I've never seen him once come in when he's sad, angry.
0:38:36 > 0:38:39He's always been happy, really sort of excited for the day to happen.
0:38:39 > 0:38:41So, he's just a cracking lad.
0:38:41 > 0:38:45Hollie's just the sort of friend that no matter what's going on in my
0:38:45 > 0:38:48life, erm, I want her there with me.
0:38:48 > 0:38:51She's just so supportive, and...
0:38:51 > 0:38:53And yes, she's just really good fun as well.
0:38:53 > 0:38:56- How much did they pay them?! - THEY LAUGH
0:38:56 > 0:38:58Josh and, er, Harris are two...
0:38:58 > 0:39:01two lively characters, we love them dearly.
0:39:01 > 0:39:05Because of the nature of Hollie and Gilan's busy schedule,
0:39:05 > 0:39:06we see a lot of them, and...
0:39:06 > 0:39:10- which is great.- When they first told me about
0:39:10 > 0:39:15the idea of going to New Zealand, it was a bit of a shock.
0:39:15 > 0:39:18Because we were still in that process of still getting to know
0:39:18 > 0:39:21each other, and especially with Harris coming along, the young one,
0:39:21 > 0:39:23I don't want to lose my grandkids
0:39:23 > 0:39:26when I've just started to get to know them.
0:39:26 > 0:39:29- We'll miss that, too.- Yeah, we'll definitely miss that.
0:39:29 > 0:39:31- Josh will miss that. - Yeah, definitely.
0:39:31 > 0:39:33Perhaps more for the grandchildren,
0:39:33 > 0:39:35the fact that they wouldn't all get together again.
0:39:35 > 0:39:37But that's the way it is, and it's just...
0:39:37 > 0:39:39You've just got to live with it, haven't you?
0:39:39 > 0:39:43To let them go and have their own lives and be happy.
0:39:43 > 0:39:45Yeah, we kind of hope you'll stay.
0:39:45 > 0:39:47But if you do decide to go, it'll be...
0:39:47 > 0:39:49it'll be really, really fun and we will visit.
0:39:49 > 0:39:54- But we'll miss you lots. - And I'll miss you so much.
0:39:54 > 0:39:58I love you immensely. And, erm...
0:39:58 > 0:40:00But I trust you immensely.
0:40:00 > 0:40:03And I know that you'll do what's right for you guys as a family.
0:40:04 > 0:40:07If we did move away, we would make the time for the family
0:40:07 > 0:40:09and make sure that it would be part of our lives,
0:40:09 > 0:40:13- to make sure that they were coming to visit or vice versa.- Oh, yeah.
0:40:13 > 0:40:15At the beginning of their trial week,
0:40:15 > 0:40:19the Kellys wanted to know if New Zealand could match
0:40:19 > 0:40:21and even better the sort of life
0:40:21 > 0:40:24they had grown accustomed to in the UK.
0:40:24 > 0:40:26As they approach the final vote,
0:40:26 > 0:40:29we're about to discover if the Aberdeen couple
0:40:29 > 0:40:32have decided do or don't to a move.
0:40:32 > 0:40:35What would you do if you were them?
0:40:37 > 0:40:40- OK!- When the Kellys started out their week,
0:40:40 > 0:40:43they wanted to see that New Zealand could offer them a place where they
0:40:43 > 0:40:45could grow their business,
0:40:45 > 0:40:48and offer them a better life with their young family.
0:40:48 > 0:40:51And it's come up trumps on that.
0:40:51 > 0:40:54The one thing that we don't get right in the UK is our balance,
0:40:54 > 0:40:56the time with the kids and work.
0:40:56 > 0:40:59Really important that that day worked - and it definitely did.
0:40:59 > 0:41:03Just being here I think with the family has been great.
0:41:03 > 0:41:04Sort of highlight of this week
0:41:04 > 0:41:08so far is spending the day with the kids.
0:41:08 > 0:41:12It also turns out that they can afford it - and some.
0:41:12 > 0:41:14Moneywise, it would all stack up.
0:41:14 > 0:41:18That was a really pleasantly positive surprise.
0:41:18 > 0:41:21Having the financial burden off your shoulders, you know,
0:41:21 > 0:41:23helps with the decision-making.
0:41:23 > 0:41:25But they've discovered that this
0:41:25 > 0:41:28move will affect more than just them.
0:41:28 > 0:41:32A little bit upsetting hearing friends and family upset.
0:41:32 > 0:41:34Especially, I suppose, on my dad's side.
0:41:34 > 0:41:37I've obviously not known that side of the family for very long,
0:41:37 > 0:41:40been out of touch for a very long time.
0:41:40 > 0:41:42So, yeah, that will probably be hard,
0:41:42 > 0:41:45knowing that we're potentially going to be moving away from that.
0:41:45 > 0:41:48Never nice to see anybody that you care about getting upset or talk
0:41:48 > 0:41:49about not wanting you to leave.
0:41:51 > 0:41:55But at the end of the day, we'll still visit the UK if we move,
0:41:55 > 0:41:58and they will most definitely visit here.
0:41:58 > 0:42:00And as the final decision approaches,
0:42:00 > 0:42:03it's all starting to become clear.
0:42:03 > 0:42:05Very nearly decided.
0:42:05 > 0:42:08I've got strong feelings about some things.
0:42:08 > 0:42:10And there are other things which
0:42:10 > 0:42:13I think need a little bit more investigating as well.
0:42:13 > 0:42:16I'm quite set on where I'm going to go, yep.
0:42:16 > 0:42:19And what if one of them says no?
0:42:20 > 0:42:23No, he's not going to!
0:42:23 > 0:42:26I don't think she is...
0:42:26 > 0:42:28Erm... But who knows?
0:42:28 > 0:42:31Well, then, only one way to find out.
0:42:37 > 0:42:39- BOTH:- New Zealand.
0:42:41 > 0:42:44New Zealand to you, Joshy? Yeah!
0:42:44 > 0:42:46At least answered a lot of our questions,
0:42:46 > 0:42:49which gives me a lot of confidence, so overall, really happy.
0:42:49 > 0:42:51I feel the same. I think it was a
0:42:51 > 0:42:55- pretty easy choice, being New Zealand.- Definitely.
0:42:56 > 0:43:01So, Gilan and Hollie have weighed up the heartbreak of saying goodbye
0:43:01 > 0:43:05to loved ones against the benefits of moving to New Zealand,
0:43:05 > 0:43:09and decided that a new start for a family is best for them.
0:43:09 > 0:43:13Wellington is to be the new home for themselves and their boys,
0:43:13 > 0:43:17and we wish all four, soon-to-be five, the very best of luck.
