0:00:02 > 0:00:04Lynn Walters has been infatuated with Australia
0:00:04 > 0:00:07since she travelled there as a young girl,
0:00:07 > 0:00:09and now wants to move down under with her family.
0:00:11 > 0:00:14If you said to me, "You could never go to Australia again," I'd cry.
0:00:16 > 0:00:19I just need... I need it in my life.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22But her husband, Owen, doesn't share her Aussie obsession.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24We all want to make a go of it,
0:00:24 > 0:00:27it's not like we're really pulling in different directions,
0:00:27 > 0:00:32it's just I probably have more concerns than Lynn.
0:00:32 > 0:00:35A trial week sees husband and wife sample the sort of life
0:00:35 > 0:00:37they could have in reality...
0:00:37 > 0:00:39Shall we have a family cuddle?
0:00:40 > 0:00:43..but will the call of home be the deciding factor?
0:00:43 > 0:00:46Why should we take their granddaughter away from them?
0:00:48 > 0:00:49Yeah.
0:01:15 > 0:01:18Home to no fewer than 200 nationalities,
0:01:18 > 0:01:22Australia boasts a vibrant, multicultural society.
0:01:22 > 0:01:25And with the promise of an easy-going, outdoor lifestyle,
0:01:25 > 0:01:28it's no wonder the country remains an irresistible pull
0:01:28 > 0:01:32for Brits seeking a better life down under.
0:01:32 > 0:01:34Not everyone stays for good, however.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37Almost half of those who emigrate end up returning home.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44Lynn Walters loves Australia so much,
0:01:44 > 0:01:47she even called her daughter Matilda,
0:01:47 > 0:01:50and she wants her daughter to grow up as an Aussie.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53But Lynn's dream of waltzing off to the land of Oz
0:01:53 > 0:01:58could come to a halt if husband Owen has anything to do with it.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01He wants to be convinced that the realities of living down under
0:02:01 > 0:02:03are affordable and practical.
0:02:03 > 0:02:07And so, they're off for a trial week together.
0:02:07 > 0:02:11At the end, they'll vote - to stay in the UK,
0:02:11 > 0:02:13or to finally make the move.
0:02:15 > 0:02:19After a journey lasting 18 hours via Abu Dhabi,
0:02:19 > 0:02:21the Walters have arrived at last in Perth.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26And it's been a tale of two flights.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28It was very long. I couldn't do that very often.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31No, I mean, it's our first flight with Matilda.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33- So, yeah.- First time she's ever flown.
0:02:33 > 0:02:36So, she didn't take to the first one very well, did she?
0:02:36 > 0:02:37But the second one, not a problem.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40- The second flight through, she was absolutely fine.- Yeah.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43For Lynn, though, it's already more than just a visit.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45- I'm home.- Looking forward to it... - I feel like I'm home.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47I know that sounds really stupid.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50I just feel comfortable.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53That's the only way I can describe it, just comfortable.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55Owen, however, is determined to focus, from the start,
0:02:55 > 0:02:58on the practicalities.
0:02:58 > 0:03:04Actually, the day-to-day, dealing with things like jobs, childcare,
0:03:04 > 0:03:06hopefully we can answer questions like that,
0:03:06 > 0:03:10and get some answers to really decide whether we want to live here
0:03:10 > 0:03:12- or just come here on holiday.- Yeah.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15So, that's going to be the difference, I think.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18And in just seven days' time, we'll have the answer
0:03:18 > 0:03:20about what side of the world their future lies.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26Meet the Walters family.
0:03:26 > 0:03:30They're Dad Owen, Mum Lynn, and their two-year-old daughter Matilda.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35Ever since the couple met, Lynn has known exactly
0:03:35 > 0:03:37what she wanted in life.
0:03:37 > 0:03:44I guess the first time we met was early morning at my job.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48When I went to...
0:03:48 > 0:03:51I went to open the front door of my shop in London,
0:03:51 > 0:03:53and Lynn was stood on the doorstep waiting
0:03:53 > 0:03:55and I told her to go away.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58Because I thought she was a customer.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00- But, erm...- I'd totally forgotten about that!
0:04:00 > 0:04:03I hadn't realised that she was actually starting work that day.
0:04:03 > 0:04:05I had my sights on you by day two, didn't I?
0:04:05 > 0:04:08- Yeah.- I went home and said to Cath, "We're going out together."
0:04:08 > 0:04:10- Yeah, we went out together. - Yeah.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13And that was 17 and a half years ago.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15- Goodness me.- Seems like yesterday.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20Once she got her man, the only other thing that has tugged
0:04:20 > 0:04:23on Lynn's heartstrings is a move to Australia.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25So, I first went out to Australia in 1997,
0:04:25 > 0:04:28and drove the whole way from Sydney to Sydney,
0:04:28 > 0:04:32a massive great big circle - took about a year to do it.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35And then I had to come home because my big sister was getting married.
0:04:35 > 0:04:37And then got back out there, actually,
0:04:37 > 0:04:39as soon as I possibly could.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42And then, suddenly, visas ran out so I had to come home.
0:04:42 > 0:04:46If you said to me, "You could never go to Australia again," I'd cry.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50I just need... I need it in my life!
0:04:50 > 0:04:52I don't know why, just has to be Australia.
0:04:53 > 0:04:54Yeah.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56It's a dream Owen has always known about.
0:04:58 > 0:04:59Even when I first met her,
0:04:59 > 0:05:03she'd applied for a visa to go out to Australia,
0:05:03 > 0:05:05and unfortunately that didn't work out.
0:05:05 > 0:05:07And the disappointment I saw with her then,
0:05:07 > 0:05:11I knew that it was something she really, really wanted to do.
0:05:11 > 0:05:15However, over the last few years, the dream has taken a back seat,
0:05:15 > 0:05:19as the couple started a family and settled down.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22But Owen always knew it was only a matter of time.
0:05:22 > 0:05:27There's the Australian element that I think needs to be seen through,
0:05:27 > 0:05:31for everybody, just to not get it out of the system,
0:05:31 > 0:05:34but kind of make the dream happen.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36She's been working towards it for so long.
0:05:37 > 0:05:39I am willing to go along with that, so...
0:05:41 > 0:05:43And for Lynn, that time has arrived.
0:05:45 > 0:05:46I've just not felt settled.
0:05:46 > 0:05:47I've just...
0:05:47 > 0:05:49I feel like...
0:05:50 > 0:05:52I almost feel like we're camping, you know,
0:05:52 > 0:05:54we're moving the tent around.
0:05:54 > 0:05:58And I don't want the tent any more, I want a permanent structure now.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00Erm...
0:06:00 > 0:06:02Yeah, I want somewhere with some roots.
0:06:02 > 0:06:04Would be quite nice.
0:06:04 > 0:06:06While Owen isn't totally opposed to the idea,
0:06:06 > 0:06:11he is a lot more level-headed when it comes to a possible move.
0:06:11 > 0:06:14We don't want to be going halfway across the world and then be
0:06:14 > 0:06:17really struggling and have to eat beans for the rest of our existence.
0:06:17 > 0:06:21But I probably have more concerns than Lynn,
0:06:21 > 0:06:24and also she hasn't been out there for quite a while,
0:06:24 > 0:06:27certainly not lived out there long-term for quite a while.
0:06:27 > 0:06:31She's been on, sort of, three-week holidays and things like that,
0:06:31 > 0:06:35but that's not the same as day-to-day life.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37And he's concerned about what, or rather who,
0:06:37 > 0:06:39they'd be leaving behind.
0:06:40 > 0:06:43Family, everyone is getting a bit older now,
0:06:43 > 0:06:48and health issues with my family, my dad, particularly,
0:06:48 > 0:06:54kind of scared me a little bit because he was very seriously ill
0:06:54 > 0:06:57about a year and a half ago, and was in hospital for quite a long time.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00And that then scared me to think,
0:07:00 > 0:07:04"Well, if I was on the other side of the world, what would I do?"
0:07:04 > 0:07:07It's something Lynn is worried might cloud his judgment
0:07:07 > 0:07:09on the trial week.
0:07:09 > 0:07:13I've thought every day about what would happen if Owen didn't like it.
0:07:14 > 0:07:16I don't know. Let's cross that bridge if we come to it -
0:07:16 > 0:07:17IF we come to it.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23Over the next week, we'll find out where the family's future lies.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34The family's base for the week is a holiday rental in the beach-side
0:07:34 > 0:07:38suburb of Mindarie, 30 minutes north of Perth.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42Wow! It's amazing!
0:07:42 > 0:07:44Look at this! Wow!
0:07:44 > 0:07:46And it seems Lynn can't wait to get in.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51You getting stuff in, or shall we just go in and have a look?
0:07:51 > 0:07:52That's told you, Owen!
0:07:52 > 0:07:55And it doesn't disappoint when they get inside.
0:07:55 > 0:07:57- Wow!- Wow.
0:07:58 > 0:08:01Matilda, meanwhile, has found something she likes outside.
0:08:01 > 0:08:04- Oh, look, Mum.- I know!
0:08:04 > 0:08:06Look!
0:08:06 > 0:08:07Yay!
0:08:08 > 0:08:11And not surprisingly, it's got Lynn excited.
0:08:11 > 0:08:13It's gorgeous.
0:08:13 > 0:08:16This is exactly what I had in mind, you know.
0:08:16 > 0:08:18The pool, that's just a bonus.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21Even Owen is impressed.
0:08:21 > 0:08:23I can imagine us living here.
0:08:23 > 0:08:24- Really, already?- Yeah.
0:08:24 > 0:08:27Like, we've only been here five minutes.
0:08:27 > 0:08:31Well, well, looks like Lynn may have persuaded Owen on day one!
0:08:31 > 0:08:34It won't get him out of unloading the car, though.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44Back in the UK, the Walters rent a small,
0:08:44 > 0:08:47three-bedroom house in the village of Overton in Hampshire.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51It's a lovely little village, isn't it?
0:08:51 > 0:08:53Really, really nice network of people.
0:08:53 > 0:08:55But there's kind of not really much to do, is there?
0:08:55 > 0:08:57Yeah, it does...
0:08:57 > 0:09:01If you want to do activities, you do tend to have to drive to places.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03And at the moment, we rent our house.
0:09:03 > 0:09:07We pay 950 a month for the rent on this place.
0:09:07 > 0:09:11It's three bedrooms, but they're not really three bedrooms.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13- It's two bedrooms and a boxroom. - Two small bedrooms and a box.
0:09:13 > 0:09:17The cost of renting in the UK is just going up and up.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19It's just gone beyond our reach.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22For Lynn, though, the move isn't about what they live in.
0:09:22 > 0:09:26It's more about location, location, location.
0:09:26 > 0:09:28We have to be near a beach.
0:09:28 > 0:09:30What's the point of going to Australia
0:09:30 > 0:09:31and not being near a beach?
0:09:32 > 0:09:34Owen agrees, but again, the practicalities are
0:09:34 > 0:09:36at the forefront of his mind.
0:09:36 > 0:09:40- Look at you!- We don't want to be spending, well, if we can avoid it,
0:09:40 > 0:09:42as much rent as we're paying now.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45And we are willing to downsize a little bit
0:09:45 > 0:09:48from what we've got at the moment.
0:09:48 > 0:09:52They have a budget of £220 per week to spend
0:09:52 > 0:09:55on a rental property down under.
0:09:55 > 0:09:58To find out what sort of home their money could get them in Perth,
0:09:58 > 0:10:01we'll show them three properties - two based on budget,
0:10:01 > 0:10:04and a third which could be their dream home.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07Only after they've seen each one will they find out its value.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12The search begins in family-friendly Clarkson.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14Close to schools and shops,
0:10:14 > 0:10:17this new-build three-bed rental is a great place to start out
0:10:17 > 0:10:21in Australia. After leaving Matilda with a childminder,
0:10:21 > 0:10:25Lynn and Owen's reaction as they pull up outside is a positive one.
0:10:25 > 0:10:27Wow! This looks amazing!
0:10:27 > 0:10:29This is a nice neighbourhood.
0:10:29 > 0:10:33And the positive vibes continue into the open-plan living area.
0:10:33 > 0:10:34Oh, this is nice!
0:10:36 > 0:10:38- Really nice.- Isn't it?
0:10:38 > 0:10:41- Really light.- It's bigger than I thought it would be.- Yeah.
0:10:41 > 0:10:42Really nice kitchen as well.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44While you're here making me a cup of tea,
0:10:44 > 0:10:47I can just be sat there out on my deck.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50You could bring me drinks.
0:10:50 > 0:10:53- That sound all right to you? - Yeah, lovely!
0:10:54 > 0:10:56It's into the main bedroom next.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00Oh, this is nice. Much bigger than our bedroom at home.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02- Nice and light again. - You can actually walk around...
0:11:02 > 0:11:04- Yeah, you can actually walk around the bed.- And it's got...
0:11:04 > 0:11:07- A walk-in cupboard.- A walk-in wardrobe!- That Aussie staple!
0:11:07 > 0:11:08It's going well!
0:11:10 > 0:11:12- And an en-suite bathroom. - And an en-suite.
0:11:12 > 0:11:14Wow! Oh, this is nice.
0:11:14 > 0:11:16Quite big as well.
0:11:16 > 0:11:19- It's like a hotel room, really. - It is like a hotel room, yeah.
0:11:19 > 0:11:22It's like you'd wake up in a hotel room, with the wardrobe, en suite...
0:11:22 > 0:11:26- Yeah.- Is it just me, or is Lynn keener on this place than Owen is?
0:11:26 > 0:11:30Oh, my goodness. It's like a whole other house.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33- Oh, wow. - This is quite a dinky little room.
0:11:33 > 0:11:35Do you know, I was just going to say it's quite big, isn't it?!
0:11:35 > 0:11:37Hmm...
0:11:37 > 0:11:40It does feel a bit enclosed, with all the fencing round it, though.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43It does a bit, but would you want to be looking at another house?
0:11:43 > 0:11:45And you could put things on there anyway.
0:11:45 > 0:11:47- That's true.- We could make it all pretty and put murals on there and
0:11:47 > 0:11:50- stuff, couldn't you?- Yeah, it does feel a bit stark at the moment.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53- Plants. Yeah, but you'd... Me and my plants.- That's very true.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55There'd be plants everywhere, wouldn't there?
0:11:55 > 0:11:58Lynn's definitely trying the hard sell on Owen!
0:11:58 > 0:12:00Another bedroom. Wow!
0:12:00 > 0:12:03Twin bedroom as well. Yeah, this would make a great guest bedroom,
0:12:03 > 0:12:04- wouldn't it?- Yeah.
0:12:04 > 0:12:08A second small bathroom is the next stop on the tour.
0:12:08 > 0:12:10- Yep.- Oh, nice. - Dinky little bathroom.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13It's small, but it's got what you would need.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16- Let's go and have a look at the rest.- OK.
0:12:16 > 0:12:18Lynn's determined to see the positives in this house,
0:12:18 > 0:12:20right down to the laundry room.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25- SHE GASPS - A separate laundry!
0:12:25 > 0:12:27- Oh, yes!- That's brilliant.- So, you wouldn't have to have your
0:12:27 > 0:12:30- washing machine and everything in the kitchen, which I hate.- No.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33- Keep all this clutter.- Your mop, and have all your stuff underneath.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35- Hoover...- Hoover, mops, everything out of the way.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38- Oh, how brilliant!- Yeah, you're pretty enthusiastic about that.
0:12:38 > 0:12:41I know! But you know this is the one thing that I've always loved about
0:12:41 > 0:12:44Australian houses, is that they have a separate laundry.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47- That's true, yeah.- And I have always said that to you -
0:12:47 > 0:12:48"They have separate laundries!"
0:12:48 > 0:12:50It's certainly got Lynn in a spin.
0:12:52 > 0:12:56Outside isn't exactly big, but it's getting the thumbs-up from Lynn.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58- Ah, this is nice. - Outdoor...- Outdoor seating.
0:12:58 > 0:13:00Barbecue area as well.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02Back door straight onto outside.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04So, you could make your tea, just come and sit here,
0:13:04 > 0:13:06and then she could play in the shade.
0:13:06 > 0:13:08The big question, of course,
0:13:08 > 0:13:11is whether a house like this could be affordable to the Walters.
0:13:11 > 0:13:14Their budget? £220 per week.
0:13:15 > 0:13:17Do you know, I really don't know, I'm not sure.
0:13:17 > 0:13:19- It's difficult. - Gut reaction would be, this is...
0:13:19 > 0:13:21- Over budget. - This is over budget, yeah.
0:13:21 > 0:13:23Yeah, definitely. Shall we have a look?
0:13:23 > 0:13:25Yeah.
0:13:27 > 0:13:28SHE GASPS
0:13:28 > 0:13:30£205 per week.
0:13:30 > 0:13:33- So, it's under budget.- That is under budget. That is a surprise.
0:13:33 > 0:13:34That's substantially under budget.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37- I'm really surprised by that. - I'm really surprised.
0:13:37 > 0:13:39Yeah, I didn't realise you'd get something quite this nice.
0:13:39 > 0:13:43- I think we're probably a little bit further away from the sea.- Yes.
0:13:43 > 0:13:45Well, under budget is great news,
0:13:45 > 0:13:48and they've still got two properties to go.
0:13:48 > 0:13:50The next one is situated in Connolly,
0:13:50 > 0:13:52just 15 minutes' drive away.
0:13:52 > 0:13:55But as the couple arrive, they're not sure exactly what's on offer.
0:13:58 > 0:14:00Do you think this is flats, or houses or...?
0:14:00 > 0:14:02I don't know, do you think they're units maybe?
0:14:02 > 0:14:03It looks like it, doesn't it?
0:14:03 > 0:14:06- It's hard to tell.- Yeah, shall we go and have a look?- Yeah, come on.
0:14:10 > 0:14:11Oh, wow! OK.
0:14:11 > 0:14:15- There's an upstairs.- Oh, yeah, so it's like a house.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18- It's not a flat. - Oh, OK, so, two-level.
0:14:18 > 0:14:23It's more like a house, erm, a home, then, isn't it, really?
0:14:23 > 0:14:27- Oh, wow!- Separate dining room. - So...- A kitchen is well.- Kitchen.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30Quite a nice big kitchen, actually, as well.
0:14:30 > 0:14:31It's nice, I still like it.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34I mean, it's not as nice as that other one.
0:14:34 > 0:14:36Did I hear Lynn being negative?
0:14:36 > 0:14:38Quick! Time to get upstairs!
0:14:40 > 0:14:42Oh, quite a big room.
0:14:42 > 0:14:44- Double bedroom.- Yeah. - Yeah, it doesn't have any...
0:14:44 > 0:14:46It's weird coming upstairs in Australia, isn't it?
0:14:46 > 0:14:49Not great so far, but that might be about to change.
0:14:49 > 0:14:52Oh, nice. Oh, look, it's got a balcony!
0:14:52 > 0:14:56At last! This house feels like it's in Australia.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59Oh, wow! This is nice, look at the view.
0:14:59 > 0:15:03- It's beautiful. Shall we go and see the other bedroom?- Yes.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06Finally, a look at what might be Matilda's room.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08Oh, this is a nice-sized room again.
0:15:08 > 0:15:11All the bedrooms are bigger than our rooms at home.
0:15:11 > 0:15:15- Yeah.- All of them. They make our rooms at home look so tiny.
0:15:15 > 0:15:18Outside, and it's certainly sunnier than property one.
0:15:18 > 0:15:21- It's pretty bright out here, isn't it?- It's very bright, actually.
0:15:21 > 0:15:24- I think it's reflecting off all the white walls.- Yeah, proper squint.
0:15:24 > 0:15:25- Sun trap.- Yeah.
0:15:27 > 0:15:29- Erm...- It's a smaller area than the last place.
0:15:29 > 0:15:32Yeah. I mean, I don't know where you'd play.
0:15:32 > 0:15:34It's weird, there's a part of me that kind of goes, "Oh..."
0:15:34 > 0:15:36But there's another part of me that thinks,
0:15:36 > 0:15:39"It's in Australia and I just don't care."
0:15:39 > 0:15:44Hmm. The question is, what would you pay for such a compromise?
0:15:44 > 0:15:48So, this property is a lot more like a house we'd see at home.
0:15:48 > 0:15:52- Yeah, a UK property.- Sure.- It's very different to the other ones.
0:15:52 > 0:15:54Yeah, I would have said it's probably around our budget.
0:15:54 > 0:15:58- Do you think it's on budget? - Probably on budget, yeah.- On budget?
0:15:58 > 0:16:03With their budget of £220 a week, fingers crossed they're right.
0:16:03 > 0:16:05- Shall we have a look?- Yeah, OK. - OK.
0:16:08 > 0:16:10£220 per week.
0:16:10 > 0:16:12- So, that is...- Wow, so that is on budget.
0:16:12 > 0:16:14- That is exactly on budget. - Exactly on budget.
0:16:14 > 0:16:17- So, this is what we pay at home. - Yeah.
0:16:17 > 0:16:20Bang on budget, and things are looking very positive
0:16:20 > 0:16:21for the Walters.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25Property three is situated in Queen's Rock,
0:16:25 > 0:16:27a mere 7.5 miles up the road.
0:16:27 > 0:16:30This four-bedroom house on the coastal side of the highway
0:16:30 > 0:16:33could just be their dream property.
0:16:33 > 0:16:36And from the outside, it set Lynn's pulse racing.
0:16:36 > 0:16:38Oh, wow.
0:16:38 > 0:16:39Look, look what's in the garden.
0:16:39 > 0:16:42- Oh, you've got your palm tree. - Three palm trees!
0:16:42 > 0:16:44- Awesome.- Wow, this is beautiful.
0:16:44 > 0:16:45This is really nice.
0:16:46 > 0:16:49Oh, this is nice. Oh, look, like a nook lounge.
0:16:49 > 0:16:51- Yeah. Little lounge.- That's nice.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54And a nice window opening out onto the garden there as well.
0:16:54 > 0:16:55Looking onto palm trees.
0:16:55 > 0:16:58- Yeah, onto your palm trees. - Very nice.
0:16:58 > 0:17:01From the small entrance area, to something...
0:17:01 > 0:17:03Look at the space in here!
0:17:03 > 0:17:04SHE GASPS
0:17:04 > 0:17:06..bigger.
0:17:06 > 0:17:07- Ooh.- Oh, my goodness!
0:17:08 > 0:17:11- This is big.- It's huge!
0:17:11 > 0:17:13And this is just the dining room.
0:17:13 > 0:17:16Absolutely massive!
0:17:16 > 0:17:17Into the main bedroom next.
0:17:17 > 0:17:20- Oh, this is nice. - Big master bedroom.
0:17:20 > 0:17:22Yeah. Nice room again.
0:17:22 > 0:17:23You can walk around.
0:17:25 > 0:17:28Bathroom. This weird little door, look.
0:17:28 > 0:17:31- Oh, yeah.- It's tiny, for small people.- Really narrow door.
0:17:31 > 0:17:33Oh, this is a nice bathroom.
0:17:33 > 0:17:36- Very nice bathroom. - Lovely shower.- Yeah.
0:17:36 > 0:17:38And you've got palm trees right in front of you.
0:17:38 > 0:17:40- Like a happy thought as soon as you woke up, wouldn't it?- Yeah.
0:17:40 > 0:17:42Very nice.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45This house definitely seems to be impressing both Lynn and Owen.
0:17:45 > 0:17:47There's a load of rooms here.
0:17:47 > 0:17:49Oh, wow. Oh, these are nice.
0:17:49 > 0:17:51- This is nice.- Yeah.
0:17:51 > 0:17:53Oh, it's a really cosy feeling, isn't it?
0:17:53 > 0:17:55I could see Mum in this room.
0:17:55 > 0:17:58- And then you've got storage. - Yeah.- A nice double bed.- Yeah.
0:17:58 > 0:18:01So, what would Matilda's room look like?
0:18:03 > 0:18:05Oh, this is nice. Smaller...
0:18:05 > 0:18:08..but still nice. It would still be big enough for Matilda...
0:18:08 > 0:18:09I mean, because that's a massive bed.
0:18:09 > 0:18:12It would still be big enough for Matilda to have a bedroom.
0:18:12 > 0:18:14- Yeah, this could be Matilda's room, easily.- Wouldn't it?
0:18:14 > 0:18:16But there's more.
0:18:16 > 0:18:17A fourth bedroom.
0:18:17 > 0:18:21My goodness! A house with four bedrooms!
0:18:21 > 0:18:22A bit of a luxury, wouldn't it?
0:18:22 > 0:18:25- It would be, yeah. - Would be very nice.
0:18:25 > 0:18:27I'd have to clean them. Ooh!
0:18:29 > 0:18:30It's the outside space, however,
0:18:30 > 0:18:33where this property really comes into its own.
0:18:33 > 0:18:37- Look at this. - Wow.- Oh, my goodness.
0:18:37 > 0:18:40- Amazing pool.- A swimming pool, with palm trees on it!
0:18:40 > 0:18:44- Ah!- Can't ask for more than that, can you?- Oh, wow!
0:18:44 > 0:18:46Oh, that's cold!
0:18:46 > 0:18:49- Is it?- Yeah!- Nice after a summer's day, though.- Oh, yeah.
0:18:49 > 0:18:53- I think this would be out of our range completely.- Yeah.
0:18:53 > 0:18:56Seeing how it compares to the other properties, then...
0:18:56 > 0:18:58- Yeah.- ..I think this is going to be out of our league,
0:18:58 > 0:19:01- to be honest.- Yeah.- Let's hope it doesn't leave a bitter taste.
0:19:01 > 0:19:03It would be something to aspire to.
0:19:03 > 0:19:06I'd be amazingly surprised if it was near our price range.
0:19:06 > 0:19:08- Yeah.- I don't think it's going to be.
0:19:08 > 0:19:11- Certainly considerably more than the other places.- Yeah, definitely.
0:19:11 > 0:19:13Time to reveal all.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18No way!
0:19:18 > 0:19:19£280 a week.
0:19:21 > 0:19:24- Wow!- That's £60 per week more than their budget,
0:19:24 > 0:19:26but they're pleasantly surprised they could get so much
0:19:26 > 0:19:29- for that money.- That's actually a lot cheaper than I thought.
0:19:29 > 0:19:31That's really surprising.
0:19:31 > 0:19:33- I mean, it's...- To get all this for that.
0:19:33 > 0:19:35It is a little bit above budget.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38- Wow.- Yeah, I mean, it's not that much above budget.- No.
0:19:38 > 0:19:42A day's house-hunting has given the Walters a real idea of what they
0:19:42 > 0:19:44could afford on their budget.
0:19:44 > 0:19:48Property one was small, but being at the bottom end of their budget
0:19:48 > 0:19:51made it very attractive to the couple.
0:19:51 > 0:19:54House number two didn't live up to the Aussie-style layout
0:19:54 > 0:19:58so important to Lynn. But the balcony and the price was a bonus.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02Property three was exactly the sort of house that would make
0:20:02 > 0:20:06Lynn's dream a reality. And although it was out of their price range,
0:20:06 > 0:20:10they were upbeat about getting bang for their buck.
0:20:10 > 0:20:12So, when it comes to property in Perth,
0:20:12 > 0:20:15will the couple vote for the UK or down under?
0:20:20 > 0:20:21- Australia.- Australia.
0:20:21 > 0:20:23Really?
0:20:26 > 0:20:30- Really?- Yeah. To have this as your back garden at the end of the day...
0:20:30 > 0:20:32- Yeah.- ..it's a no-brainer, really.
0:20:41 > 0:20:45It's a great start for Lynn's mission to persuade Owen.
0:20:45 > 0:20:47But affording anything will ultimately come down
0:20:47 > 0:20:49to the jobs they can secure in Australia.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54Back in the UK, Lynn, who for years underwent treatment
0:20:54 > 0:20:58for a serious spinal condition, is patient turned professional.
0:21:00 > 0:21:01I've had X-rays, I've had scans.
0:21:01 > 0:21:04Me and my mum were sat in the waiting room, and she said to me,
0:21:04 > 0:21:06"I don't know why you don't do this.
0:21:06 > 0:21:08"You'd be so good at it. You've been the patient for years."
0:21:08 > 0:21:10I thought, "Do you know what, you're right."
0:21:10 > 0:21:14So, I went in for my X-ray and I actually said to the radiographer,
0:21:14 > 0:21:17"What do I need to do to become a radiographer?"
0:21:17 > 0:21:21And went home and started the ball rolling, really.
0:21:21 > 0:21:22And here I am!
0:21:23 > 0:21:26Before committing herself, though, she needed to check
0:21:26 > 0:21:28on one important detail.
0:21:28 > 0:21:30Next patient, please.
0:21:30 > 0:21:32The first thing I did was go home and see what was
0:21:32 > 0:21:35on the skills shortage for Australia.
0:21:35 > 0:21:39And luckily, diagnostic radiographer is on the list.
0:21:39 > 0:21:42Had it have not been on the list, I would have chose something else,
0:21:42 > 0:21:45because the whole point of doing a degree was to do it
0:21:45 > 0:21:47to get to Australia.
0:21:48 > 0:21:53Having qualified five years ago, it's a job she now cherishes.
0:21:53 > 0:21:54I really, really enjoy my job.
0:21:54 > 0:21:57I enjoy talking to my patients, I enjoy meeting
0:21:57 > 0:21:59all the different people.
0:21:59 > 0:22:02I enjoy the gore of it!
0:22:02 > 0:22:03And it's brilliant.
0:22:03 > 0:22:05I love it.
0:22:05 > 0:22:07Owen, meanwhile, is an assistant manager
0:22:07 > 0:22:10for an outdoors clothing company in Winchester.
0:22:10 > 0:22:14Given his love of adventure, it's almost the perfect job.
0:22:15 > 0:22:17Working with the outdoor kit and...
0:22:18 > 0:22:21..having that experience makes it all the more enjoyable.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23I feel comfortable doing it as well.
0:22:23 > 0:22:26And it's something he would like to continue doing down under.
0:22:26 > 0:22:28Whether it be with an outdoor clothing company,
0:22:28 > 0:22:32or something to do with outdoor activities,
0:22:32 > 0:22:36where I can use my experience and my expertise, then yeah,
0:22:36 > 0:22:38any transferable skills would be good.
0:22:39 > 0:22:43And money? Well, that's always on Owen's mind.
0:22:43 > 0:22:47It really depends on cost of living, when we're out there.
0:22:47 > 0:22:52But I don't think we could really afford to go any lower
0:22:52 > 0:22:54than I'm earning at the moment.
0:22:54 > 0:22:58This is the sort of, the point where it becomes almost comfortable.
0:23:00 > 0:23:03Ultimately, Lynn knows that if there's any way to move,
0:23:03 > 0:23:04it's all down to her.
0:23:04 > 0:23:06The visa is completely on me.
0:23:06 > 0:23:08I'm the main applicant.
0:23:09 > 0:23:14So, I need to find work in Australia as a diagnostic radiographer...
0:23:15 > 0:23:17..in order to make this dream come true.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20If I can't find work, then that's kind of it, really.
0:23:22 > 0:23:26Today will give the couple the opportunity to explore their chances
0:23:26 > 0:23:28of finding work down under.
0:23:29 > 0:23:32First up, Lynn is visiting a private radiography centre,
0:23:32 > 0:23:34where she meets Lee Parker.
0:23:34 > 0:23:36- Hi, Lynn, how are you? Lee, nice to meet you.- Hi. Nice to meet you.
0:23:36 > 0:23:39- Would you like to come for a bit of a look around?- I'd love to.
0:23:39 > 0:23:42- Thank you.- Thank you. Come with me. This is our general X-ray room...
0:23:42 > 0:23:44- Oh, OK.- This is kind of the space we have.
0:23:44 > 0:23:45Same as we use at home.
0:23:45 > 0:23:47So, it'd be a nice transition, just the same equipment.
0:23:47 > 0:23:49- Very good, very good.- Yeah.
0:23:49 > 0:23:52And looking around the facilities is reassuringly familiar.
0:23:52 > 0:23:55- This is a true, sort of, a clinical environment.- Yes.
0:23:55 > 0:23:58Across town, Owen has come to the local high street,
0:23:58 > 0:24:00where he's checking out opportunities
0:24:00 > 0:24:02in an outdoor pursuits store.
0:24:02 > 0:24:05Inside, he sits down with store manager Isabel.
0:24:05 > 0:24:07- Hiya, nice to meet you, I'm Isabel. - How are you doing?
0:24:07 > 0:24:10- Fine, thanks, how about yourself? - Yeah, good, thank you.- Good.
0:24:10 > 0:24:13First up, what sort of hours would Owen be working?
0:24:13 > 0:24:15You're looking at 76 hours a fortnight,
0:24:15 > 0:24:17so roughly a 38-hour working week.
0:24:17 > 0:24:20So, if I wanted to get a similar role that I have at home,
0:24:20 > 0:24:23like assistant manager, just ballpark,
0:24:23 > 0:24:26what sort of wage figure would we be looking at here?
0:24:26 > 0:24:30You're roughly looking about 46,000 per annum.
0:24:30 > 0:24:35That's around £28,000 - £8,000 more than he gets now.
0:24:35 > 0:24:37That... That is quite encouraging,
0:24:37 > 0:24:41because that is more than I'm earning at home at the moment.
0:24:43 > 0:24:46Back at the radiographer's, Lynn has finished her whirlwind tour,
0:24:46 > 0:24:49and is sitting down with Rosie to dig deeper
0:24:49 > 0:24:50into her career prospects.
0:24:50 > 0:24:53- Hi.- Hi, Lynn, nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you.- You, too.
0:24:53 > 0:24:55Rosie's our branch manager.
0:24:55 > 0:24:57So, for someone like myself, a qualified radiographer,
0:24:57 > 0:24:59what would my opportunities be in Perth?
0:24:59 > 0:25:01If you've already got the qualifications,
0:25:01 > 0:25:05you just have to register with our board over here, so that way
0:25:05 > 0:25:06we look at all the qualifications,
0:25:06 > 0:25:09make sure that everything sort of matches what we require.
0:25:09 > 0:25:11You don't have to be full-time.
0:25:11 > 0:25:13There's a lot of opportunity to do part-time work,
0:25:13 > 0:25:15so you might choose to job-share with someone,
0:25:15 > 0:25:17or you might do school hours,
0:25:17 > 0:25:19it all depends on what's available obviously at the branches
0:25:19 > 0:25:21at the time and the demand.
0:25:21 > 0:25:23But what about the all-important wage?
0:25:23 > 0:25:26At the moment, Lynn earns £15,000 a year,
0:25:26 > 0:25:30which is roughly 25,000 Australian dollars.
0:25:30 > 0:25:32So, what would be the average earnings in Perth
0:25:32 > 0:25:34for a diagnostic radiographer?
0:25:34 > 0:25:38Generally, about 70,000 per annum would be an average wage.
0:25:38 > 0:25:40That's around £42,000 -
0:25:40 > 0:25:45double what Lynn would be earning if she worked full-time in the UK.
0:25:45 > 0:25:48It's been a really positive morning for both Lynn and Owen,
0:25:48 > 0:25:51and they meet up afterwards along with Matilda
0:25:51 > 0:25:53to discuss how they got on.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55- How was your day? - It was good, really good.
0:25:55 > 0:25:57- Yeah?- Yeah. So, how do you think it went?
0:25:57 > 0:25:59It was really, really good.
0:25:59 > 0:26:02It was brilliant to see that things were the same.
0:26:02 > 0:26:05- So, what are the wages like? - Yeah, good.
0:26:05 > 0:26:08What I thought. Kind of starting off at 70,000 a year.
0:26:08 > 0:26:10To know that you could do your job,
0:26:10 > 0:26:13still keep your skills, but still have a life outside,
0:26:13 > 0:26:14that made me quite happy.
0:26:14 > 0:26:15So, how did your day go today?
0:26:16 > 0:26:19Really, really good. It was really encouraging.
0:26:19 > 0:26:22The salary was more than I'd be earning at home.
0:26:22 > 0:26:24- Good.- So, really good.
0:26:25 > 0:26:27With all this good news, dare we presume which way
0:26:27 > 0:26:29they're going to vote?
0:26:36 > 0:26:38- Australia.- Australia.
0:26:41 > 0:26:42Quite emotional, actually.
0:26:42 > 0:26:44Weirdly!
0:26:44 > 0:26:45Kind of...
0:26:45 > 0:26:47That's two out of three.
0:26:48 > 0:26:50I am actually really emotional!
0:26:52 > 0:26:56At this rate, it looks like the family could get used to this view.
0:27:04 > 0:27:07Halfway through their trial week, and for Lynn,
0:27:07 > 0:27:10it's all going according to plan.
0:27:10 > 0:27:14Slowly but surely, Owen seems to be buying into her Aussie dream.
0:27:14 > 0:27:18However, with the all-important financial reality check
0:27:18 > 0:27:23and messages from home to come, things can still very much change.
0:27:23 > 0:27:26First, though, a day sampling the sort of lifestyle
0:27:26 > 0:27:30the family might be able to enjoy in Perth gives the couple a chance
0:27:30 > 0:27:33to gather their thoughts before moving forward
0:27:33 > 0:27:35to the second part of their week.
0:27:36 > 0:27:40At last, it's a chance for Lynn to show Owen and Matilda
0:27:40 > 0:27:44the kind of laid-back lifestyle Perth has to offer.
0:27:44 > 0:27:47And where better to start than the beach, with some outdoor fun?
0:27:51 > 0:27:52The sea's over there!
0:27:52 > 0:27:54This way!
0:27:54 > 0:27:56First up, how to paddle like a pro.
0:27:59 > 0:28:02SHE SCREAMS
0:28:03 > 0:28:06- Yeah! Maybe not!- There it is, yeah.
0:28:06 > 0:28:08Shall we wave to them? Hi!
0:28:08 > 0:28:10Shall we have a family cuddle?
0:28:10 > 0:28:11Yeah!
0:28:11 > 0:28:14Time to bust out the trusted sandcastle.
0:28:18 > 0:28:21One, two, three...
0:28:21 > 0:28:23Hurray!
0:28:23 > 0:28:25I just love being here.
0:28:25 > 0:28:30I could definitely see us having this life and doing this.
0:28:30 > 0:28:33And it looks like they're having a ball.
0:28:33 > 0:28:34- Go!- Yay!
0:28:36 > 0:28:38Oh!
0:28:38 > 0:28:41Finally, Owen gets to show off his high-flying skills.
0:28:45 > 0:28:48Today has been pretty amazing.
0:28:48 > 0:28:51I've got to fly my kite, which, I mean, I can at home,
0:28:51 > 0:28:57but in this kind of surroundings - beautiful sunshine, sandy beaches...
0:28:57 > 0:28:59Normally, to fly my kite at home when it's windy,
0:28:59 > 0:29:01it's normally horrible weather.
0:29:01 > 0:29:05So, what have Mum and Dad made of the Aussie lifestyle today?
0:29:09 > 0:29:11This is the perfect day, isn't it? I mean, it's so relaxing.
0:29:15 > 0:29:18I definitely, definitely am in my happy place.
0:29:18 > 0:29:22I just hope that Owen and Matilda find it a happy place as well.
0:29:24 > 0:29:28Overall, I mean, the experience so far has been incredible,
0:29:28 > 0:29:30and really, really positive.
0:29:30 > 0:29:33So, I mean, it points the way towards...
0:29:33 > 0:29:36..thinking about the overall yes.
0:29:36 > 0:29:39But there are still factors that I want to have a think about,
0:29:39 > 0:29:43and, erm, people back home, that's the main concern.
0:29:43 > 0:29:47And that always has been the concern, from the very beginning.
0:29:48 > 0:29:50I really don't know if...
0:29:50 > 0:29:54Which way... If leaving his parents could sway him to not come here.
0:29:55 > 0:29:58I don't know, I don't always know what's going on in that little mind.
0:29:58 > 0:30:02And I don't know, on that one, I have no idea.
0:30:02 > 0:30:04I hope not.
0:30:04 > 0:30:07Knowing that my dad can't really travel long distances
0:30:07 > 0:30:09in any country is a worry.
0:30:09 > 0:30:12So, there's still a bit to decide yet.
0:30:13 > 0:30:16I hope we can move over here.
0:30:16 > 0:30:17We'll wait and find out.
0:30:19 > 0:30:23So, has Lynn done enough to convince Owen to choose Australia
0:30:23 > 0:30:25over his family in the UK?
0:30:34 > 0:30:36- Australia.- Australia.
0:30:37 > 0:30:38- Again.- Again. Yeah!
0:30:38 > 0:30:40- Really?- Yeah.
0:30:40 > 0:30:42Well, for this, it's...
0:30:42 > 0:30:44It's so different to home.
0:30:44 > 0:30:46- Yeah.- It's made me cry.
0:30:46 > 0:30:47I'm crying!
0:30:49 > 0:30:53That's really cool. I was so scared that you maybe didn't like it
0:30:53 > 0:30:55and then I'd have to give my dream up.
0:30:55 > 0:30:57But then you've got to like it as well,
0:30:57 > 0:30:59it's got to be a dream for you as well.
0:30:59 > 0:31:01This is my choice.
0:31:08 > 0:31:09I'm so happy!
0:31:20 > 0:31:24So far, Lynn is on a high, as Owen has voted for Australia every time.
0:31:24 > 0:31:27But as money is a huge concern for him,
0:31:27 > 0:31:31will looking at the finances bring them both back to Earth with a bump?
0:31:31 > 0:31:32OK...
0:31:32 > 0:31:35First up, it's the dreaded groceries.
0:31:35 > 0:31:38- Satsumas are a little bit cheaper. - It's all the fresh stuff.
0:31:38 > 0:31:40Blueberries, look at the blueberries,
0:31:40 > 0:31:43£2.50 more expensive for 150g.
0:31:43 > 0:31:46What's this one, that's crazy?
0:31:46 > 0:31:49Pork steaks - right, we're never eating those again.
0:31:49 > 0:31:52£6.73 more expensive.
0:31:52 > 0:31:54- That's extreme, isn't it?- Wow, yes.
0:31:54 > 0:31:56It's time to tot up the food bill.
0:31:59 > 0:32:02Whoa! That is serious difference.
0:32:02 > 0:32:04That is double the amount we spend at home.
0:32:04 > 0:32:06More than double.
0:32:06 > 0:32:10This means they are worse off by almost £60 a week in Oz
0:32:10 > 0:32:11with their food shop.
0:32:11 > 0:32:14- That's a shock, a real shock. - Yeah.
0:32:14 > 0:32:18Dare they even tackle the bigger monthly bills?
0:32:18 > 0:32:19Here goes.
0:32:19 > 0:32:22- OK, so that's a good start. - Can already see rent's cheaper.
0:32:22 > 0:32:26Yeah. So, our rent at home, 950...
0:32:27 > 0:32:31..minus rent over here, is 823...
0:32:32 > 0:32:36You've got a £127 difference a month.
0:32:36 > 0:32:39- That's quite a lot. - That is quite good.
0:32:39 > 0:32:41- Makes up the groceries.- Yeah!
0:32:41 > 0:32:46- Daycare for Matilda three days a week...- Yeah.- ..640.
0:32:46 > 0:32:48- Yeah.- And over here is 375.
0:32:50 > 0:32:52- Really?- Yeah.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54Will these two be able to keep their feet on the ground
0:32:54 > 0:32:56as they do the sums?
0:32:58 > 0:33:01£1,505.
0:33:01 > 0:33:02That's amazing.
0:33:02 > 0:33:05Because that's how much better off we'll be per month.
0:33:05 > 0:33:10- So, we'd be £1,500 better off a month living in Australia?- Yeah.
0:33:11 > 0:33:13Shall we book the flights?
0:33:14 > 0:33:17That's really good. It's weird, it's actually made me really nervous,
0:33:17 > 0:33:19because it might actually happen!
0:33:22 > 0:33:24So, which way will the couple vote,
0:33:24 > 0:33:27knowing they could keep their heads above water?
0:33:28 > 0:33:30- Oh! - THEY LAUGH
0:33:30 > 0:33:32Turns out that's the only thing!
0:33:32 > 0:33:34You div!
0:33:34 > 0:33:36Has disaster been averted?
0:33:38 > 0:33:40- Ha-ha!- That was awesome!
0:33:40 > 0:33:42Back on dry land...
0:33:42 > 0:33:44- Australia.- Australia.
0:33:48 > 0:33:49Yes!
0:33:49 > 0:33:50Kerching!
0:34:00 > 0:34:04Lynn is well on her way to achieving her 20-year dream
0:34:04 > 0:34:06of moving to Australia.
0:34:06 > 0:34:09But as the couple prepare to watch messages from home,
0:34:09 > 0:34:12could it mean a complete U-turn for both of them?
0:34:12 > 0:34:15Hi, Lynn, hi, Owen. I was really missing you.
0:34:15 > 0:34:16See you soon hopefully.
0:34:16 > 0:34:17- Hello!- Hello!- Hiya.- Hello!
0:34:19 > 0:34:21Hi, Lynn, hi, Owen.
0:34:21 > 0:34:22Hello!
0:34:23 > 0:34:28She's very energetic, she's very chatty, very bubbly.
0:34:28 > 0:34:29She's really supportive.
0:34:29 > 0:34:31She's always there for me.
0:34:31 > 0:34:34Erm, yeah - she's my sister!
0:34:34 > 0:34:38She's crackers. She's lovely, she's the loveliest person.
0:34:38 > 0:34:39I've known her all my life,
0:34:39 > 0:34:42she's like the closest thing I'll ever have to a sister.
0:34:42 > 0:34:44She's a very, very good mum.
0:34:44 > 0:34:46Loads more patience than I have.
0:34:46 > 0:34:48So, she's in charge of Owen, because he's a bit
0:34:48 > 0:34:52more laid-back than she is, put it that way!
0:34:52 > 0:34:54I would say that he's...
0:34:54 > 0:34:56He can be very cautious about things,
0:34:56 > 0:34:59he likes to know what he's going into.
0:34:59 > 0:35:02Yeah, I don't think he'd just jump in feet first.
0:35:02 > 0:35:06Obviously, having a niece that's so young,
0:35:06 > 0:35:10it would be hard not seeing her kind of growing up,
0:35:10 > 0:35:12and becoming kind of school age,
0:35:12 > 0:35:15and then telling me about everything she's been doing at school,
0:35:15 > 0:35:18and then a teenager, and potentially I'm going to miss quite some
0:35:18 > 0:35:20big steps in her life.
0:35:20 > 0:35:24She's funny, lively, gets on very well with her cousins.
0:35:24 > 0:35:26My kids are going to miss her, especially my daughter.
0:35:26 > 0:35:30Our thoughts are obviously with Matilda, as a grandchild, you know,
0:35:30 > 0:35:32- because we...- Our only grandchild!
0:35:32 > 0:35:35- Yeah, our only grandchild, yeah. - Yes.
0:35:35 > 0:35:37That will be the worst thing, really,
0:35:37 > 0:35:40the fact that we won't be able to see them very much.
0:35:41 > 0:35:43And in your case, maybe not at all.
0:35:43 > 0:35:46- Well, yes, it is a fact. - But to go there...
0:35:48 > 0:35:49Yes.
0:35:49 > 0:35:51Hope she doesn't forget us.
0:35:52 > 0:35:54Lynn's idea to go to Australia has been with her for as long as I can
0:35:54 > 0:35:58remember, so I've always known that she's going to go there eventually.
0:35:58 > 0:36:01And I'm really pleased that she'll be going.
0:36:01 > 0:36:05She knows obviously how far away it is, but I'm not sure...
0:36:06 > 0:36:09..how... Now she's got Matilda, it's going to be really hard,
0:36:09 > 0:36:11and I am a little bit worried how hard it's going to be,
0:36:11 > 0:36:13because she is very close to her mum and her sisters.
0:36:13 > 0:36:15So, I think that's going to be a bit of a shock.
0:36:15 > 0:36:17It's going to be hard for all of us, it will be.
0:36:17 > 0:36:18I'm under no illusions.
0:36:18 > 0:36:23But my mum, you know, if she's fine with it,
0:36:23 > 0:36:25then we're all fine with it, really.
0:36:26 > 0:36:28But, yeah, it is going to be tricky.
0:36:29 > 0:36:32I just will miss her very, very much.
0:36:32 > 0:36:33I'll miss my mum.
0:36:33 > 0:36:35And...
0:36:35 > 0:36:36But what can you say?
0:36:37 > 0:36:39- I'm not going to cry.- I am!
0:36:40 > 0:36:42The fact that I've just had a baby,
0:36:42 > 0:36:44it would be lovely if the cousins could grow up together.
0:36:44 > 0:36:46That is the only thing that would be a negative,
0:36:46 > 0:36:49that I just wouldn't have my sister around whilst I'm looking after...
0:36:49 > 0:36:50..raising my son. Yeah.
0:36:51 > 0:36:55It is a shame, if they go. But...
0:36:55 > 0:36:58..if that's really what they want to do and they feel
0:36:58 > 0:37:00that that would be a better life, then...
0:37:00 > 0:37:02Oh, we'd support them all the way through.
0:37:02 > 0:37:04- ..we'd support them, definitely. - Of course we would, yeah.
0:37:04 > 0:37:06I don't want you to go. No, actually I do.
0:37:06 > 0:37:09I want you to go, Lynn, because you've wanted this forever,
0:37:09 > 0:37:12and you just need to go, enjoy every minute of it,
0:37:12 > 0:37:13and just don't look back.
0:37:13 > 0:37:15But don't forget me.
0:37:15 > 0:37:16Love ya!
0:37:17 > 0:37:19I think my advice, guys, is just do it.
0:37:19 > 0:37:20Life's too short.
0:37:20 > 0:37:22You can always come back.
0:37:22 > 0:37:25But if you don't do it now, you'll regret it forever, so go for it.
0:37:27 > 0:37:30If you think it's the life for you, then just go with it,
0:37:30 > 0:37:32because I think it would be very, very good for you.
0:37:32 > 0:37:35Lynn, we know you've always wanted to go.
0:37:35 > 0:37:37We know it's your dream, you've strived hard to do this,
0:37:37 > 0:37:38and you've worked hard.
0:37:40 > 0:37:42- I'd really miss them.- If you get to move out there permanently,
0:37:42 > 0:37:46I know you'll love it. And we'll come and visit, of course we will.
0:37:47 > 0:37:49Well, if you do decide to go to Australia,
0:37:49 > 0:37:51we obviously will miss you a lot.
0:37:51 > 0:37:53Miss you loads, in fact.
0:37:53 > 0:37:55But if that's going to be a better life for you all,
0:37:55 > 0:37:57we wish you all the best.
0:37:57 > 0:38:00Obviously, we'll miss you, but you've got to do
0:38:00 > 0:38:02what you want to do, in the long run.
0:38:02 > 0:38:05And we'll support you in everything you do.
0:38:08 > 0:38:09Good luck!
0:38:13 > 0:38:15- You're as red-eyed as I am! - Yeah.
0:38:17 > 0:38:18- Your dad...- Mum and dad, and...
0:38:18 > 0:38:21My mum would come out, but your parents...
0:38:22 > 0:38:24- My dad wouldn't be able to.- No.
0:38:24 > 0:38:26And he's always been really supportive,
0:38:26 > 0:38:28but you can tell this has upset them.
0:38:30 > 0:38:31Yeah.
0:38:34 > 0:38:37- It's hard.- It's really hard.
0:38:37 > 0:38:39This is the bit that I was worried about originally.
0:38:39 > 0:38:45- Yeah, me too.- Why should we take their granddaughter away from them?
0:38:45 > 0:38:48That's what's in the back of my mind, we're taking her away from...
0:38:48 > 0:38:51- From that.- ..all of that. - Which is her family.
0:38:52 > 0:38:53So, yeah, do you take her away from her family
0:38:53 > 0:38:56so she can go down the beach?
0:38:56 > 0:38:58- Yeah.- It's got to have more than that, hasn't it?
0:38:58 > 0:39:01- It's got to have a bit more balance than that.- Yeah.
0:39:06 > 0:39:10For four full days, through property, work,
0:39:10 > 0:39:12the leisure day and reality check,
0:39:12 > 0:39:16Lynn had Owen exactly where she wanted him,
0:39:16 > 0:39:20voting for Australia every single time.
0:39:20 > 0:39:22And then came messages from home.
0:39:22 > 0:39:26Has the incredibly emotional pleas from friends and family
0:39:26 > 0:39:30for them to stay put in the UK been enough to sway Owen
0:39:30 > 0:39:33back into the stay camp?
0:39:33 > 0:39:35What would YOU do?
0:39:38 > 0:39:39It's time for the Walters to pack up,
0:39:39 > 0:39:42in preparation for their return to the UK.
0:39:43 > 0:39:47And as they do, there's only one real topic on their minds -
0:39:47 > 0:39:49the messages from home.
0:39:50 > 0:39:55Most... Well, everything we've seen over here has been overly positive.
0:39:55 > 0:39:57It has been really, really good.
0:39:57 > 0:40:01And it's the bit back home that's the kind of thing
0:40:01 > 0:40:05that's still kept me in two minds, really, and that is something...
0:40:06 > 0:40:09..I'm going to have to sort of resolve and make a decision on.
0:40:09 > 0:40:12You don't see Owen get emotional.
0:40:12 > 0:40:14That's not what we do.
0:40:14 > 0:40:18Erm, so, I think it upset him seeing his mum upset.
0:40:18 > 0:40:21He's such a good-natured person, and he would never,
0:40:21 > 0:40:22ever want to hurt anybody.
0:40:22 > 0:40:26So, I think when he realised that our actions
0:40:26 > 0:40:30could potentially hurt someone, that really upset him.
0:40:30 > 0:40:34Obviously, I've probably talked more about my dad being ill
0:40:34 > 0:40:36and not being able to come out here.
0:40:36 > 0:40:39But to sort of visually just see it on the screen,
0:40:39 > 0:40:44that Mum's obviously upset about not being able to see Matilda grow up,
0:40:44 > 0:40:46that did catch me off guard a bit and I did feel quite upset
0:40:46 > 0:40:47while we were watching that.
0:40:47 > 0:40:50I didn't quite feel beforehand that it would have that
0:40:50 > 0:40:53effect on the, but, yeah, obviously it does.
0:40:53 > 0:40:56It's in there, and that is a big thing.
0:40:56 > 0:41:00You don't really realise quite how you feel until you watch that video.
0:41:00 > 0:41:01It's hard.
0:41:01 > 0:41:04It would just... That's the first thing that's happened
0:41:04 > 0:41:05that's made me think...
0:41:05 > 0:41:07"Oh, could I?"
0:41:08 > 0:41:11But nothing is permanent.
0:41:11 > 0:41:12Nothing.
0:41:12 > 0:41:16And you can do anything, and if you don't like it, you can turn around.
0:41:16 > 0:41:18It doesn't matter. It doesn't mean failure, it just means...
0:41:18 > 0:41:21If anything, I think it's more courageous to try it
0:41:21 > 0:41:23and not like it than to never try it.
0:41:23 > 0:41:25It's something that Lynn has always wanted.
0:41:25 > 0:41:27I would love to do it as well.
0:41:27 > 0:41:30But we want to make sure we're doing the right thing,
0:41:30 > 0:41:33and especially doing the right thing for Matilda as well.
0:41:33 > 0:41:37I think while I'm watching Owen spin the flag on our final vote...
0:41:39 > 0:41:40..I'm a little bit... Well, you know,
0:41:40 > 0:41:43he's surprised me the last few times by voting Australia...
0:41:43 > 0:41:45Now, I don't know.
0:41:46 > 0:41:49I'm just really hoping he chooses Australia.
0:41:49 > 0:41:53You know, what if he doesn't? What if we have to go to plan B?
0:41:53 > 0:41:57I don't know, I can't really think how I feel about it until I see it,
0:41:57 > 0:41:59to be honest.
0:41:59 > 0:42:01Well, the wait is over,
0:42:01 > 0:42:03and it's time for Lynn and Owen to make their final vote.
0:42:06 > 0:42:09After everything we've seen in Australia, our vote goes to...
0:42:17 > 0:42:18..undecided.
0:42:20 > 0:42:22Australia.
0:42:22 > 0:42:25Everything I've seen here has been absolutely amazing.
0:42:25 > 0:42:29- Yep.- And today has kind of been a bit of a roller-coaster of emotions,
0:42:29 > 0:42:31because of the distances involved.
0:42:31 > 0:42:34We need to have a proper thought about it, I think.
0:42:34 > 0:42:36- OK.- Just a little bit more.
0:42:38 > 0:42:42OK. Erm, yeah, no, that's fair enough.
0:42:42 > 0:42:43I think I understand,
0:42:43 > 0:42:46seeing how upset you got when you saw the video.
0:42:46 > 0:42:48I don't think it's a total negative at all.
0:42:48 > 0:42:50It's just we need a bit more time to have a think about it.
0:42:50 > 0:42:53- Need to think about it. - Yeah.- Yeah.
0:42:53 > 0:42:54OK.
0:43:00 > 0:43:05In the end, the impact of those messages from home did it again.
0:43:05 > 0:43:08They changed the whole game.
0:43:08 > 0:43:11But Owen has far from closed the door on a future move,
0:43:11 > 0:43:13and whatever the Walters family decide to do,
0:43:13 > 0:43:15we wish them all the very best of luck.
