0:00:02 > 0:00:06Persephone and Debbie are disillusioned with life in the UK...

0:00:06 > 0:00:08There was no work-life balance.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10She was working and I was life.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12..and they think New Zealand could be the answer.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16With her work situation, with us as a family unit,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19it is feeling more and more right.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22A trial week sees the family get a vision of how they might live.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26But will it be enough to get their children onboard?

0:00:26 > 0:00:28It'll kind of be really, like,

0:00:28 > 0:00:32strange, not seeing Dad very much at all.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35We don't really know everything about it,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37so I think it's going to be a tough decision.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41And if the children aren't convinced...

0:00:41 > 0:00:43It would be a, you know, a no-brainer.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45There would be no decision to make.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48We'd just be coming home, and that would be the end of that.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50FUNKY MUSIC PLAYS

0:01:08 > 0:01:13There's something for everyone in this diverse and beautiful country -

0:01:13 > 0:01:15from beaches, amazing sea life and

0:01:15 > 0:01:18water sports, to magnificent mountains,

0:01:18 > 0:01:21hot springs and superb skiing.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Little wonder that New Zealand is top of many lists as a destination

0:01:24 > 0:01:27for people searching for a better life.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32The Santa Clara-De Magdalene family

0:01:32 > 0:01:34is disillusioned with all the

0:01:34 > 0:01:38problems they see in modern British society,

0:01:38 > 0:01:42and feel it could be time to get out while they're ahead.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Across a trial week in New Zealand,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48they'll get to see where they might live, what they can afford,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51and the jobs they could get if they emigrated.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55At the end, they'll come to a final decision and vote.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59After a long journey lasting nearly 30 hours,

0:01:59 > 0:02:05the Santa Clara-De Magdalene clan have finally landed in Hamilton.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08And straight away, daughter Tilly is telling it like it is.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12I'm so bored! So bored!

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Those last few hours have been a big struggle,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17and I'm looking forward to my bed.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20It's just amazing to think we're actually here.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Something that we wanted for such a long time, to come and visit and see

0:02:23 > 0:02:27whether our fantasy of New Zealand is a reality.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29But to sort out fantasy from reality,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32they need to get something straight.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36- In particular...- Housing, finances and work.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38So those are kind of the really major things

0:02:38 > 0:02:40that need to be in place.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43That said, Perse is cheerfully optimistic.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46- I want to be here by Christmas. - LAUGHTER

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Now that is optimistic!

0:02:48 > 0:02:52In fact, Tilly thinks jet lag must be setting in.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54We haven't even been outside the airport,

0:02:54 > 0:02:58- and you're like, "Oh, my God, I love it so much! Oh, my God!" - LAUGHTER

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Debbie thinks Tilly could do with a little bit more travel.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Shall we put them on the next flight back?

0:03:04 > 0:03:07- Yeah, and send them home. - And we'll spend the week here. - LAUGHTER

0:03:07 > 0:03:08Oh, no, don't leave so soon.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11They're excited to be here, really.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14We're just raring to get out there, really.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Get our stuff, get into the hire car, get to our house,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19and start our adventure.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Well, then, let the adventure commence.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Meet the Santa Clara-De Magdalene family.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29They are Persephone De Magdalene,

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Debbie Santa Clara,

0:03:31 > 0:03:36Persephone's children Tilly, 13, and brother Raphael, aged 12.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40Since meeting, the couple have always shared a dream of emigrating.

0:03:41 > 0:03:46It's always been on my, sort of, radar to emigrate.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49Their main motivation is a better work-life balance.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53Debbie is a doctor and works up to 80 hours a week,

0:03:53 > 0:03:58so it fell on Perse, an academic, to keep home life going.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01It meant that there was no work-life balance.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04She was working and I was life.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06That was how, that was the balance.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10There's been times when the children have been surprised to see me at

0:04:10 > 0:04:15home, and that's quite heart-wrenching.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18With Perse's academic career on hold,

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Debbie went part-time, which brought a different set of problems.

0:04:22 > 0:04:28It means it's going to take longer to train to get to consultant level.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33Which would have its benefit in that I would see the children

0:04:33 > 0:04:36more often, but it does have a financial strain.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Perse also feels the financial pressure.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42We need a proper family house and the cost of that, and then

0:04:42 > 0:04:45the repayments of the mortgage each month, and how much we'd have to

0:04:45 > 0:04:47work and how much we'd have to earn and, you know,

0:04:47 > 0:04:51just the whole cycle was just starting to feel really oppressive.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55But their desire to move is more than just about money.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00New Zealand is still a very diverse culture.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04You know, they're very,

0:05:04 > 0:05:08very supportive of gay relationships and gay families.

0:05:08 > 0:05:14It's very important for us to be accepted as a gay couple,

0:05:14 > 0:05:16because we are.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19So a move to New Zealand seems very attractive.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24With her work situation, with us as a family unit,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27it is feeling more and more right.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32I'm now at the stage in my training which also makes it easier to move

0:05:32 > 0:05:36across, because it's a transferable stage within training,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39which means I won't have to start again.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42The timing is also perfect for the children's schooling, and their

0:05:42 > 0:05:44father has given his blessing to any move.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51They do have a pretty strong relationship between them.

0:05:51 > 0:05:57It will kind of be really, like strange, to just, like,

0:05:57 > 0:06:00start, like, not seeing Dad very much at all.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04He wants us to have the best in life,

0:06:04 > 0:06:06and if moving to New Zealand is the

0:06:06 > 0:06:11best idea, then I think that he would like support us to do that.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13But also he would miss us.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16It really just seems to be that everything is conspiring to tell us

0:06:16 > 0:06:18that now, now is the time.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22Debbie, meanwhile, also has people she'll miss terribly.

0:06:23 > 0:06:24I'll miss my mum.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28LAUGHTER

0:06:28 > 0:06:32As they wrestle with the decision, they have just one rule -

0:06:32 > 0:06:34it's all in or not at all.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38If either one of the children,

0:06:38 > 0:06:41you know, was distraught at the end of the week and, you know,

0:06:41 > 0:06:44never wanted to see New Zealand again,

0:06:44 > 0:06:46it would be a, you know, a no-brainer.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48There would be no decision to make,

0:06:48 > 0:06:50we'd just be coming home and that would be the end of that.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56The family's base for the week is in Hamilton,

0:06:56 > 0:06:59where it's time to unload the car and settle in.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02And bagsie a room, of course.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Ha, Tilly's gone straight for the bedrooms.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07Oh, look at the garden!

0:07:07 > 0:07:09A lot more room than we've got at home, eh?

0:07:09 > 0:07:13Yep, they seem happy with their temporary home away from home.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17And after all that travelling, time for a snack,

0:07:17 > 0:07:20courtesy of the native feijoa fruit.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24- That is horrible. - LAUGHTER

0:07:24 > 0:07:27I don't think it'd be quite my cup of tea.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30- Our first taste of...- Our first taste of feijoa is pretty terrible.

0:07:30 > 0:07:31And you're going for more?

0:07:31 > 0:07:33Yeah, I am, because I'm not a quitter.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Raphie and Tilly, meanwhile, are settling in, too.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40I like it.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42I think it's really cool,

0:07:42 > 0:07:47because although it is, like, getting into the winter,

0:07:47 > 0:07:49it's still really warm.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53All in all, everyone is ready for an action-packed week.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57Just sitting here in this garden with space has just brought home

0:07:57 > 0:08:01how much I think I've missed having space around me.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03If it turns out that, you know,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06it's affordable and it would offer us the kind of lifestyle that we are

0:08:06 > 0:08:10after, it'll be my dream come true, really.

0:08:10 > 0:08:11I love it.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Back in the UK, the Santa Clara-De Magdalenes live in Norwich

0:08:19 > 0:08:24in a two-bedroom semi which, because of house prices, they are currently renting.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27It's something they might do for a while,

0:08:27 > 0:08:29if they move to New Zealand.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31Just so that we could get a feel for the place,

0:08:31 > 0:08:36and make sure that we're making the right choice in terms of location,

0:08:36 > 0:08:39but ultimately it would be our preference to be able to buy a

0:08:39 > 0:08:43house, which is really beyond us at the moment in the UK.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47In terms of what they want from a house...

0:08:47 > 0:08:49- Garden.- Yes, definitely.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53If I could have somewhere that would be a workshop that could be warm

0:08:53 > 0:08:57- when it's winter, I would love that. - LAUGHTER

0:08:57 > 0:09:00Perse is being more practical.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03- We need lots, lots of storage space. - Storage. We need storage for sure.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06- We've got a lot of stuff. - LAUGHTER

0:09:06 > 0:09:10- And bedrooms?- One for each of the kids, and one for us at least,

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- and maybe a spare room.- Yeah.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17For both of them, the neighbourhood is also crucially important.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20- It would be an accepting community. - Yeah, definitely.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22Because we don't want to be living somewhere where

0:09:22 > 0:09:24rocks are thrown at our windows every day.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27- No, or even occasionally. - Or even occasionally. - LAUGHTER

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Not high days or holidays either.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34All in all, they're looking for a place to call home.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38A house that functions really well for our family,

0:09:38 > 0:09:41and kids who are on the cusp of becoming

0:09:41 > 0:09:43much more independent teenagers.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46But what if they don't find what they're looking for during their

0:09:46 > 0:09:50- trial week?- I don't think that it would probably be a deal-breaker to

0:09:50 > 0:09:53the extent that we wouldn't move if we didn't find our absolute perfect,

0:09:53 > 0:09:55ideal rental home.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58But I think that there would be compromises that would be a

0:09:58 > 0:09:59compromise too far.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Perse and Debbie's rental budget is £1,500 per month.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08To find out what kind of home their money could get them in Hamilton,

0:10:08 > 0:10:10we'll show them three properties -

0:10:10 > 0:10:15two based on budget, and a third, which could be their dream home.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18Only after they've seen each one will they find out its value.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23First up, they're in the Matangi area of South Hamilton.

0:10:23 > 0:10:24Courtesy of a new highway,

0:10:24 > 0:10:28this area offers a genuinely rural New Zealand location,

0:10:28 > 0:10:31but with easy access to schools, shops and amenities.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37They also won't have many parking problems, by the looks of it.

0:10:39 > 0:10:40How much garden space is this?

0:10:40 > 0:10:46- I know, it's huge.- Right away, Perse has spotted a feature to her liking.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- I like the balcony.- Yes. - I think that's very presidential.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Inside, everyone makes themselves nice and comfy.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58But what will they make of the open-plan layout?

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- This is well beyond expectations. - LAUGHTER

0:11:01 > 0:11:03- This is...- This is really lovely.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07Meanwhile, Raphie's in the driving seat.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11And the kitchen has Tilly planning a party.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14This would be so good for baking in.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18You could just, you could spread out all of your ingredients.

0:11:18 > 0:11:23- It would be so cool. - And then you could wash them all up. - LAUGHTER

0:11:23 > 0:11:26And then they spot the real secret ingredient to this house.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30- Look at that, guys.- Look at that. - Hot tub.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34- Raph, can you see it? - Oh!- It's bubbling away.

0:11:34 > 0:11:39And while the hot tub bubbles, an idea brews in the room next door.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41I can't believe how big this house is.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- It's massive.- So, two ground-floor bedrooms.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47- Yes.- Which means that there's probably at least three more upstairs.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51- Yes.- Which means lots more babies! - LAUGHTER

0:11:54 > 0:11:57Now that is planning ahead!

0:11:57 > 0:12:00And whilst Debbie and Perse continue to explore, a childminder

0:12:00 > 0:12:05puts Tilly and Raphie through their paces in the downstairs gym.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10Still downstairs, this bathroom exercises Debbie's sense of scale.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17- Bathroom, and a shower.- OK.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20OK, this is, what, about the size of...

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- Our house! - LAUGHTER

0:12:23 > 0:12:25- Next door...- A dining room. - And it's completely awesome.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29And posh gaffs always need a utility room, of course.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Although Debs and Perse are struggling to iron one particular

0:12:32 > 0:12:35- problem out in here. - But I just did that!

0:12:35 > 0:12:37I think we need to leave this for now, you two.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43Time to check out if upstairs continues to impress.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46And Perse wants to try out that balcony.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51Oh, it's lovely!

0:12:51 > 0:12:53This is beyond dreams.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56- Want to move in?- Hell, yeah.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58Great early impressions from Perse and Debbie,

0:12:58 > 0:13:01but are the children feeling at home in this house?

0:13:01 > 0:13:03I really like this room.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07- It's lovely.- Yes. This is so cool!

0:13:07 > 0:13:09Well, Tilly's reserved her room.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11What does Raphie think?

0:13:11 > 0:13:16Giant, and amazing, and big, and beautiful, and fancy.

0:13:16 > 0:13:17And I like it.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20Brief, but to the point.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22Inside this house is floating their boat,

0:13:22 > 0:13:24but what about the outside?

0:13:24 > 0:13:27There's that hot tub to have a closer look at.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30It's like this, this is really not the kind of house that I

0:13:30 > 0:13:32would imagine myself living in.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35This is somebody else's lovely house that I would admire and I would like

0:13:35 > 0:13:37to come and have a party at.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39But actually, that's OK.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42I shan't be disappointed that this is beyond our price range.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46We can aspire to it as something in the future, if that's what we want.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Well, let's see how far out of their price range it is.

0:13:49 > 0:13:53They have £1,500 per month to spend.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57- What do you think, then?- I think it's going to be at least double.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59Double?

0:13:59 > 0:14:02I don't know, I think that that's, I think that's

0:14:02 > 0:14:04over what it would probably be.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- I reckon two. Yeah.- Want to turn it over?- You do it.- Here we go.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12£1,568 per month.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18Well, it's on budget, but Perse is keeping her sensible head on.

0:14:18 > 0:14:22- So, it's affordable to us. - It's affordable.- It is.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25- Could very easily be comfortable and happy and...- Something less grand.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28- Less grand.- And have a few more grand in our pocket. - LAUGHTER

0:14:28 > 0:14:31- See what I did there?- I do indeed. - LAUGHTER

0:14:31 > 0:14:35They're reluctant to splash the cash this early on.

0:14:35 > 0:14:38So will the next property be a move in the right direction?

0:14:40 > 0:14:45It's on the far north-western border of Hamilton, in Rototuna,

0:14:45 > 0:14:48a relatively new area that has sprung up as the city has expanded

0:14:48 > 0:14:51and more affluent home-buyers have moved in.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Inside this five-bedroom property is smaller than the first property.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00So is that a good or a bad thing?

0:15:01 > 0:15:02It's gorgeous.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Well, for me, this is much more an inviting space than the other one.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10I think that it's really nice that

0:15:10 > 0:15:13everything kind of joins in together.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15- And the open-plan?- Yeah, yeah.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18The open dining area also gets top marks.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21You know, for us all to be able to sit around here and we just serve

0:15:21 > 0:15:23dinner straight from the hob.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25Over here, we're looking out on the garden.

0:15:25 > 0:15:30- It's very nice.- Although Debbie isn't totally sold.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34It just feels maybe a bit more cramped.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37Just a bit worried about storage, really.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41Luckily, the elusive but ever-helpful Raphie discovers extra

0:15:41 > 0:15:43cupboard space.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45- That helps. - LAUGHTER

0:15:47 > 0:15:50Sliding on into the living room...

0:15:50 > 0:15:53This is nice. You can close the doors...

0:15:53 > 0:15:56- Yeah, I love it. And lock the children out. - LAUGHTER

0:15:56 > 0:16:00- ..and forget about the rest of the world.- Yeah, this is lovely.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04- Really, really nice. - I like this room.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- This room could possibly sell it for me. - LAUGHTER

0:16:09 > 0:16:11Oh, back on track. And down the hall a bit,

0:16:11 > 0:16:14the main bedroom continues to win Debbie over.

0:16:18 > 0:16:22- A-ha! Walk-in closets.- Nice. - I like it.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25- It's lovely.- Yes. - And we could put a clock just there.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28Yes, we could.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32That plan Perse had earlier seems to be coming on nicely.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Next...

0:16:34 > 0:16:39- Ah, a bathroom right next door. - Pretty sure this must be the master suite.- It feels...

0:16:39 > 0:16:44Upstairs, and Tilly is back to check out her potential room.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46- Oh, wow! Look at the view, Deb! - Amazing.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50- Wow!- So maybe this one's the master bedroom.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52- Maybe.- Oh, that might cause a problem,

0:16:52 > 0:16:54because Tilly has a thought.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58- This is the kind of room that I want. - LAUGHTER

0:16:58 > 0:17:01- Yes.- Luckily, Perse is pragmatic.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03Yeah, it's awesome, isn't it?

0:17:03 > 0:17:07But I think that the other room is more practical, actually, for us.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09- So maybe you can have this room. - TILLY GASPS

0:17:09 > 0:17:13- LAUGHTER - Thank you!

0:17:13 > 0:17:15Sorted. Where's Raphie sleeping?

0:17:15 > 0:17:18- Another room.- Another room. Office space?- Yeah, music room?

0:17:18 > 0:17:21Hang on, remember Raphie!

0:17:21 > 0:17:25- Raphie's room?- Raphie's room. - Phew!- Kids' chill-out area?

0:17:25 > 0:17:29And next up, a room they could all share.

0:17:29 > 0:17:30Oh, this is more like it,

0:17:30 > 0:17:33- bathroom-wise.- Yes, bath, I was wondering where that was.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35And a lovely bath.

0:17:35 > 0:17:40Ah, but you haven't seen the triple garage yet, and come to think of

0:17:40 > 0:17:42it, we haven't seen Raphie either.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47- Carpeted.- Oh, Raphie! - There you are.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49Lying down on the job.

0:17:49 > 0:17:50Well, they've woken Raphie,

0:17:50 > 0:17:53but there's confusion about carpet - in a garage?!

0:17:53 > 0:17:56- I guess you don't park your car in the garage.- Exactly.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59Garages are not for cars.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02But perfect for Debbie's workshop.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06This has probably got more area than our house does back in England.

0:18:06 > 0:18:11Raphie's gone AWOL again, but there's no escaping the price.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17- What do you think? - Expensive, that's all I know. - LAUGHTER

0:18:17 > 0:18:19I think, yeah, I think you're probably right.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21I think this is going to be out of our range.

0:18:22 > 0:18:26- 1,800? Two grand?- Maybe. Yeah.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30- Something like that?- You can turn over, I'm too scared. - LAUGHTER

0:18:30 > 0:18:32- Ready?- Mmm.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35Remember, they have a budget of £1,500 a month.

0:18:35 > 0:18:39OK, so £1,730 per calendar month.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Less than both of us thought.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45- Yeah.- But still more than what we think we can budget for.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49That price is too much for... for me, for a rental.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55Could this be affordable? That depends on their jobs.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57The final property of the day is in Raglan -

0:18:57 > 0:19:01a small beach-side town, 30 miles west of Hamilton.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Previously the preserve of surfers and hippies,

0:19:04 > 0:19:08over the last few years it's become an exclusive retreat for Hamilton

0:19:08 > 0:19:10professionals hankering to live by the sea.

0:19:12 > 0:19:16Could this be the dream home the Santa Claras are looking for?

0:19:16 > 0:19:21But as they pull up outside, there's only one thing they want to see.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Did you see the view? Look.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26Oh, wow!

0:19:27 > 0:19:29Having not seen inside yet, I think

0:19:29 > 0:19:32that the place is absolutely stunning.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35I mean, I can't see that for us as a family it would work as a

0:19:35 > 0:19:40- living-in house.- Well, don't give up on it as a home just yet -

0:19:40 > 0:19:42have a look around first.

0:19:42 > 0:19:46And in the dining area, it seems Raphie's found his voice.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50It'd be so nice to just, like, sit down here,

0:19:50 > 0:19:52have breakfast, just looking at the...

0:19:52 > 0:19:55Out at the sea.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58Perse is a little confused by the decor, however.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01Do you know, it's quite a difference in the kitchen, isn't it?

0:20:01 > 0:20:05A feel of the '70s.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08I think, exterior-wise, it's absolutely amazing.

0:20:08 > 0:20:09I think, interior-wise,

0:20:09 > 0:20:13- I want to see more, really, before I make a judgment.- Yeah.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16A move through into the living area just confuses her a little more.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18The layout just doesn't make any sense to me.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20Sort of,

0:20:20 > 0:20:23two tables next to each other, and then there's the table at the end,

0:20:23 > 0:20:26and then there's the breakfast bar. I mean, how many tables does a family need?

0:20:26 > 0:20:28There's four right there.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31But obviously this is somebody's home and it's set up in a way that makes sense for them.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34It's trying to achieve a retro look.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39In search of their own space, the children head outside,

0:20:39 > 0:20:42while Mum and Debbie continue their tour.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46The first bedroom they see, again, seems...odd.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49That's kind of weird.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51- I don't know. Doesn't appeal to me. - LAUGHTER

0:20:51 > 0:20:54Shower, yes. Toilet, not so much.

0:20:54 > 0:20:55- Not so much.- I want a door,

0:20:55 > 0:20:59- and I want walls that go to the ceiling. - LAUGHTER

0:20:59 > 0:21:02This was meant to be their dream property,

0:21:02 > 0:21:04but it's shaping up to be far from it.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10That's not quite in keeping...

0:21:11 > 0:21:13That's from the '50s.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17- The dressing gown matches the bedspread. - LAUGHTER

0:21:17 > 0:21:19- Someone loves this house. - I know, I know,

0:21:19 > 0:21:23- I can tell that somebody loves the house.- Just not them.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25Will the bathroom change things?

0:21:25 > 0:21:27Ah. Well, that's not really in keeping with the '70s.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30- That's all right. - LAUGHTER

0:21:30 > 0:21:33But why would you do it in a completely different style?

0:21:35 > 0:21:38- Time to see the price.- OK. - LAUGHTER

0:21:38 > 0:21:39Quick!

0:21:39 > 0:21:42I think they called this viewing short.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44Let's see what it would cost to rent.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49So, what about the price on this one?

0:21:49 > 0:21:52Well, it's outside of Hamilton.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54- Yep.- Quite a way outside of Hamilton.

0:21:54 > 0:21:58- But, I mean, the views...- The view is stunning.- It's breathtaking. - Absolutely.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01- It's probably, thankfully, very beyond budget. - LAUGHTER

0:22:03 > 0:22:0519?

0:22:05 > 0:22:09- Shall we say two? - Go on, then, say 2,000.

0:22:11 > 0:22:1422. Nearly 23 per month.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17That's almost £800 over budget.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19At least there's an upside.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22- Making house number two look a bit more...- Affordable.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24- Affordable. - LAUGHTER

0:22:24 > 0:22:27House-hunting has given the family a real idea of what they can and can't

0:22:27 > 0:22:31afford. Are they going to need higher salaries to live the dream?

0:22:31 > 0:22:35Property one took everyone's breath away with its size and modern, sleek

0:22:35 > 0:22:39feel - not to mention the all-important hot tub!

0:22:39 > 0:22:43House number two, if anything, was almost more suitable for the

0:22:43 > 0:22:45family, with its cosier feel and better

0:22:45 > 0:22:50location. The rental, however, was £300 over budget.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54And property three - well, it failed to impress on almost all fronts,

0:22:54 > 0:22:56didn't it? Except the view,

0:22:56 > 0:22:59which wasn't enough to make up for the confused layout and different

0:22:59 > 0:23:03design. Indeed, the fact it was £800 over budget

0:23:03 > 0:23:05almost came as a relief.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08So, when it comes to homes in New Zealand,

0:23:08 > 0:23:11will the family vote for the UK or down under?

0:23:11 > 0:23:15Based on the properties that we've seen today, our vote goes to...

0:23:25 > 0:23:27- ..New Zealand!- Undecided!- Undecided!

0:23:29 > 0:23:32- New Zealand! - LAUGHTER

0:23:32 > 0:23:35They were all at the top of or above our,

0:23:35 > 0:23:37the higher end of our budget.

0:23:37 > 0:23:41They were also the top end of our expectations.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44So I think that there's still something there that's going to be

0:23:44 > 0:23:47more value for money than what we could achieve with the terraced

0:23:47 > 0:23:48house in England.

0:23:48 > 0:23:52Yeah. Looked at three very different properties, some of which we've liked,

0:23:52 > 0:23:55some of which we've not liked so much.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58- We now need to, kind of, figure out what we can earn.- Mm-hmm.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01- So, that's for tomorrow.- Yes. - Let's go.- Let's go.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10If the family are to find their dream home,

0:24:10 > 0:24:13then it looks like they're going to need a bigger budget,

0:24:13 > 0:24:16which makes finding the right jobs even more crucial.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20Back home in the UK, Debbie is a doctor.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25I'm currently in the early stages of my postgraduate training.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29I'm hoping to enter into emergency medicine as a speciality.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Working with patients, treating them,

0:24:33 > 0:24:36and seeing them go home is a great pleasure.

0:24:36 > 0:24:40The downside is long hours and a massive impact on home life.

0:24:41 > 0:24:45Trying to balance this, Debbie has gone part-time.

0:24:45 > 0:24:46We have a little less money,

0:24:46 > 0:24:50but we're a bit more enriched by the family time we have together.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53So how would New Zealand change things?

0:24:53 > 0:24:56I think that, in medicine,

0:24:56 > 0:25:00the job is more or less the same wherever you go.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03The difference would be the working hours, and if we can get the working

0:25:03 > 0:25:05hours right, then yes,

0:25:05 > 0:25:08we could definitely make a go of it.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10Perse has almost completed a PhD

0:25:10 > 0:25:13and wants to build a career in education.

0:25:13 > 0:25:16The job that I'd be looking for, ideally, would be as a lecturer in

0:25:16 > 0:25:19entrepreneurship and small business management,

0:25:19 > 0:25:23to combine my passion for research and my passions for teaching.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27But securing the right job may not be as straightforward for Perse as

0:25:27 > 0:25:30- Debbie.- Wherever there is a teaching hospital,

0:25:30 > 0:25:32Debbie will be able to find work.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35It's not necessarily the case, because I'm at this stage in my

0:25:35 > 0:25:37career, that wherever there is a university,

0:25:37 > 0:25:40I'll be able to walk straight into a job in the same way.

0:25:40 > 0:25:44It does make things significantly more complex, I would say.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50Debbie is visiting Waikato Hospital in Hamilton,

0:25:50 > 0:25:53where she's met by expat Willeen Reid,

0:25:53 > 0:25:55manager of childcare services.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57- Pleased to meet you.- Come on in.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01But what will she make of Debbie's experience?

0:26:01 > 0:26:05I understand that you've done four month of paediatric SHO level.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07- I'm currently in that at the moment, yeah.- Yeah, yeah.

0:26:07 > 0:26:11So working as an SHO for the first year would give you the opportunity

0:26:11 > 0:26:14- to learn the New Zealand health system, obviously...- Yeah.- ..while

0:26:14 > 0:26:18settling yourself and your family into New Zealand and into your

0:26:18 > 0:26:21- new way of life.- Mm-hmm. - An encouraging start.

0:26:22 > 0:26:27Across town, Perse is visiting Waikato Institute of Technology and

0:26:27 > 0:26:30meets chief executive Mark Flowers.

0:26:30 > 0:26:34Mark has read Perse's CV, and it seems her subject area is in demand.

0:26:34 > 0:26:38There's an appetite for people that know what we're talking about.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41- Yeah.- It's quite difficult to recruit people with that sort of

0:26:41 > 0:26:44- skill set.- Just about to complete her PhD,

0:26:44 > 0:26:48Perse is keen to know what experience she'll need to become a

0:26:48 > 0:26:49lecturer in New Zealand.

0:26:49 > 0:26:54My gut feeling is that you should more play towards your

0:26:54 > 0:26:57understanding of this whole context.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59I don't think this thing swings around teaching experience.

0:26:59 > 0:27:03You know, the biggest problems are getting people who can think outside

0:27:03 > 0:27:06- the traditional teaching regime... - Mmm.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08..use new teaching methods,

0:27:08 > 0:27:11and get that to connect up with businesses or enterprises...

0:27:11 > 0:27:15- Yes.- ..and with a particular focus on innovation.

0:27:15 > 0:27:19And that is Perse's specialist subject.

0:27:19 > 0:27:21Time to talk money.

0:27:21 > 0:27:25What would an entry-level lecturer

0:27:25 > 0:27:27at Wintec expect to earn?

0:27:27 > 0:27:32That will be somewhere in the order of say £40,000 or £50,000.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34There's quite of lot of flex in that, depending on a variety of...

0:27:34 > 0:27:37- The skills that you can bring. - Skills you bring and maybe the level

0:27:37 > 0:27:39- of responsibility or stuff around it.- OK.

0:27:39 > 0:27:43And finally, Perse wants to get Mark's personal perspective on

0:27:43 > 0:27:47- opportunities in New Zealand. - It's a much smaller country -

0:27:47 > 0:27:494 million people, the size of the UK.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51It's just not a crowded country.

0:27:51 > 0:27:55- Yeah, yeah.- You know, there are wonderful opportunities in places.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58Back at the hospital, Debbie is sitting down with Willeen to dig

0:27:58 > 0:28:00deeper into her career prospects.

0:28:02 > 0:28:03I thought I would start with the rosters,

0:28:03 > 0:28:05because you talked about lifestyle.

0:28:05 > 0:28:09- Yeah.- So this would be an example of what a roster would look like.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12So it's a combination of days, afternoons,

0:28:12 > 0:28:14and nights, as you can see.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18What would be the hours? So you said acute - is that, like, 12 and a half?

0:28:18 > 0:28:21- No, eight hours.- Eight hours?- Eight hours.- Gosh.

0:28:21 > 0:28:23No, we don't do long days for house officers.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25Well, that's pretty different.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29That's a definite improvement on Debbie's shift patterns back home.

0:28:29 > 0:28:30It's one box ticked.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32Next?

0:28:32 > 0:28:36Obviously, one of the big questions, what am I looking to earn?

0:28:36 > 0:28:38Starting as a house officer with us,

0:28:38 > 0:28:41your pay would be comparable to

0:28:41 > 0:28:42£50,000.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45- OK.- That's 8,000 more than she's on at the moment.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47And then, as a registrar, your pay

0:28:47 > 0:28:50would start round about the £62,000.

0:28:50 > 0:28:54OK, so that is actually considerably more for both of them as to what I'm

0:28:54 > 0:28:56earning at the moment.

0:28:56 > 0:29:00That's sounding very, very exciting.

0:29:00 > 0:29:04A second box checked, but what's the diagnosis on opportunities?

0:29:04 > 0:29:07Willeen has a prescription for that, too.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10I've put my card here with my e-mail address on it.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13More than happy for you to e-mail an application to me directly,

0:29:13 > 0:29:16and we'll pursue your application from there.

0:29:16 > 0:29:19Well, that was a dose of good news.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21At the end of their respective work days,

0:29:21 > 0:29:24Debbie and Perse meet up to compare notes.

0:29:24 > 0:29:27And it was a really good conversation.

0:29:27 > 0:29:29The long and short of it is that my

0:29:29 > 0:29:32shift pattern is better than at home.

0:29:33 > 0:29:36The salary...

0:29:36 > 0:29:38..is 50 grand.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41And, although the applications have closed,

0:29:41 > 0:29:45she said that I can e-mail her an application

0:29:45 > 0:29:47and they start their year in December,

0:29:47 > 0:29:50- which is when I...- Which is when you finish your...- ..finish too.

0:29:50 > 0:29:51Wow, that's amazing!

0:29:51 > 0:29:54- I got to speak to the CEO of Wintec.- Mm-hmm.

0:29:54 > 0:29:57He was talking about 40 to 50K.

0:29:57 > 0:30:01So lots of potential opportunity there and really exciting stuff.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03- That's great.- Really, really fantastic.

0:30:03 > 0:30:05Time to vote - which way will it go?

0:30:05 > 0:30:07And our work vote goes to...

0:30:18 > 0:30:19- BOTH:- ..New Zealand!

0:30:20 > 0:30:22Well, that's no surprise.

0:30:22 > 0:30:24So far, so good.

0:30:24 > 0:30:28And each day, this family's New Zealand dream looks more and more

0:30:28 > 0:30:30like it might really happen.

0:30:35 > 0:30:39Halfway through their trial week, and the family's dream of moving to

0:30:39 > 0:30:42New Zealand has shifted into a higher gear.

0:30:42 > 0:30:46And yet, with the all-important financial reality check

0:30:46 > 0:30:51and messages from home still to come, things can still stall.

0:30:51 > 0:30:56First, though, a day sampling the sort of lifestyle the family might

0:30:56 > 0:31:00be able to enjoy in New Zealand gives everyone a chance to gather

0:31:00 > 0:31:03their thoughts before moving forward to the second part of the week.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10So they'll need wet suits, gumboots -

0:31:10 > 0:31:12that's wellies to you and me -

0:31:12 > 0:31:16and of course an expert guide - Gareth.

0:31:16 > 0:31:20And while Raphie kept a low profile during the house-hunting,

0:31:20 > 0:31:22he's trailblazing in the rapids.

0:31:23 > 0:31:25Three, two, one! Woohoo!

0:31:26 > 0:31:29And a family leap of faith sees Debbie bring up the rear,

0:31:29 > 0:31:32and Raphie leads a chorus of encouragement.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34CHEERING

0:31:34 > 0:31:38And the judges award full marks for effort and 5.9 for style.

0:31:42 > 0:31:44The journey into a life down under continues.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48OK, you guys wait there, chill out.

0:31:48 > 0:31:51- I'm going to set up some abseiling. - Chill is right!

0:31:51 > 0:31:57Time for a warm-up and the world-famous Kiwi...banana dance?!

0:31:57 > 0:31:59Bananas of the world, unite!

0:31:59 > 0:32:02And...peel, peel, peel, peel bananas!

0:32:02 > 0:32:05And peel, peel, peel, peel bananas!

0:32:05 > 0:32:08And chop, chop, chop, chop bananas!

0:32:08 > 0:32:11And go, go, go, go bananas!

0:32:11 > 0:32:13CHEERING

0:32:16 > 0:32:19Onwards and downwards, and Raphie again leads the way,

0:32:19 > 0:32:22towards a nice refreshing shower.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29That was a day out to celebrate.

0:32:32 > 0:32:34INDISTINCT CHEERING

0:32:37 > 0:32:40All that exercise has worked up an appetite,

0:32:40 > 0:32:43so time for another local tradition -

0:32:43 > 0:32:45fish and chips?

0:32:45 > 0:32:48- Well, not just- any- fish and chips.

0:32:48 > 0:32:50I think the fishing boat's right there.

0:32:50 > 0:32:52That's how fresh the fish are.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55So it takes it to another level.

0:32:55 > 0:32:59It's been a truly memorable day.

0:32:59 > 0:33:02Looking out over this wonderful scenery, it's just been a really

0:33:02 > 0:33:04fantastic day all in all, hasn't it, guys?

0:33:04 > 0:33:08Yeah, definitely. It's one of the best days I've ever had.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11How much did you love it, out of ten?

0:33:11 > 0:33:14- 73. - LAUGHTER

0:33:14 > 0:33:16- Well, that's quite a lot.- That's saying a lot, yeah.

0:33:16 > 0:33:18- What about you, Tils?- I thought it was really good.

0:33:18 > 0:33:21I would love to do more of that sort of stuff.

0:33:21 > 0:33:23Yeah, I think a good time was had by all.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26A day they'll never forget, but how will they vote?

0:33:34 > 0:33:36- ALL:- New Zealand!

0:33:41 > 0:33:42The Santa Claras' dream of a new

0:33:42 > 0:33:46life in New Zealand seems to be edging ever closer.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49However, the finances need to stack up.

0:33:49 > 0:33:53Time to count the costs and see if they can afford to live down under.

0:33:55 > 0:33:59- Rinse aid for the dishwasher, £1.24 more expensive here.- Mm-hmm.

0:33:59 > 0:34:03I think the vegetables generally are more expensive.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06And the thing that leaps out is the cost of smoked salmon,

0:34:06 > 0:34:08so we're going to have to give up smoked salmon.

0:34:08 > 0:34:12- It's £10.34 more expensive! - LAUGHTER

0:34:12 > 0:34:15Custard, £2.29 more expensive.

0:34:15 > 0:34:18That's a lot more expensive, actually, isn't it?

0:34:18 > 0:34:21- Oh, can't do without our custard. - You can't, no.

0:34:21 > 0:34:24And when they add up the weekly shopping bill...

0:34:24 > 0:34:29£43.70 more expensive per week

0:34:29 > 0:34:31here in New Zealand.

0:34:31 > 0:34:36Mm-hmm. OK. It's not hugely shocking.

0:34:36 > 0:34:39Perhaps not, but when the wider costs of rent, utilities

0:34:39 > 0:34:43and other bills are added up, the financial forecast doesn't improve.

0:34:43 > 0:34:45How do you pay for water?

0:34:45 > 0:34:50- £536 more expensive in New Zealand, per month.- Per month.

0:34:50 > 0:34:52That's a lot of money.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55- It is a lot of money. - It's...it's not great.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58The overall financial outcome will depend

0:34:58 > 0:35:00on what Debbie and Perse can earn...

0:35:01 > 0:35:04..and that might brighten the outlook.

0:35:04 > 0:35:09So, based on the kinds of figures that we were talking about,

0:35:09 > 0:35:16the comparative wage for full-time work would give us £2,311...

0:35:16 > 0:35:18More per month.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20- ..being here.- Being here.

0:35:20 > 0:35:26- Does it make you happy?- It does. Yes, very much so. - LAUGHTER

0:35:26 > 0:35:29So, then, that means, annually, they'll be better off by...

0:35:31 > 0:35:36£21,300 per year...

0:35:36 > 0:35:38- Per year, better off.- ..better off

0:35:38 > 0:35:41- in New Zealand.- So, as far as Debbie's concerned...

0:35:41 > 0:35:45- It's a done deal.- It's in the bag! - LAUGHTER

0:35:45 > 0:35:47- Shall we book our flights now... - Yes.- ..to come back?

0:35:47 > 0:35:50I think the outcome of this vote is a safe bet,

0:35:50 > 0:35:51but let's see.

0:35:51 > 0:35:55So, after looking at our outgoings and potential income,

0:35:55 > 0:35:57our vote goes to...

0:36:03 > 0:36:05- BOTH:- ..New Zealand!

0:36:05 > 0:36:08- It was a bit of a no-brainer really, wasn't it?- It was, rather.

0:36:12 > 0:36:16The Santa Claras are facing a huge decision that will affect them and

0:36:16 > 0:36:18their friends and family.

0:36:18 > 0:36:21Will the lure of a new life in New Zealand be enough to convince them

0:36:21 > 0:36:23to leave it all behind?

0:36:24 > 0:36:27The whole family sit down to watch messages from

0:36:27 > 0:36:29loved ones back home.

0:36:29 > 0:36:32- So, you guys ready?- Yeah.- OK.

0:36:37 > 0:36:39- Hi, guys.- Hi.- Hi!

0:36:39 > 0:36:41Hello, Debbie. Hello, Perse.

0:36:41 > 0:36:44Hi, guys. Have fun, enjoy it.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46LAUGHTER

0:36:46 > 0:36:50Perse and Debbie are incredibly committed to each other.

0:36:50 > 0:36:55They work incredibly well together as a couple, and we're just

0:36:55 > 0:36:59delighted with them and their little family.

0:36:59 > 0:37:02Probably the most beautiful children you've ever met.

0:37:02 > 0:37:04- Because they've got this beautiful blonde hair. - LAUGHTER

0:37:04 > 0:37:07Perse's always had a slightly wild streak in her.

0:37:07 > 0:37:09She's always been looking at doing crazy ideas -

0:37:09 > 0:37:10going here, going there.

0:37:10 > 0:37:14We were a little bit, sort of, gobsmacked to start with,

0:37:14 > 0:37:18but I can see it's really exciting.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21I think if it's financially viable, and I think if they find...

0:37:21 > 0:37:24Well, I don't think they'll have a problem finding work.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26I'd imagine, if all of those things are in place,

0:37:26 > 0:37:28they'll probably do it.

0:37:28 > 0:37:30It's a worry, because

0:37:30 > 0:37:34of not being able to see them as often as we would like to.

0:37:34 > 0:37:38If they do decide to move to New Zealand, I would really miss Raphie,

0:37:38 > 0:37:41cos we've shared so many...so many memories together.

0:37:41 > 0:37:45- I would really miss him.- If they do decide to move down there,

0:37:45 > 0:37:49that'll be a big part of my close family life that disappears.

0:37:49 > 0:37:51I'll be sad not to have that.

0:37:51 > 0:37:54I think you've got to follow your hopes and your dreams and just go

0:37:54 > 0:37:57for it, and it also means that I can come out and visit you and have

0:37:57 > 0:37:59- a holiday. - LAUGHTER

0:37:59 > 0:38:03I think life happens, and if you have to make a huge move,

0:38:03 > 0:38:08and if it's a betterment for your family, that's what you need to do.

0:38:08 > 0:38:11Whatever you choose, you know, I'm there.

0:38:11 > 0:38:14If you're here, we're still here.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17And if you go, I'll go, and we'll go and pay you a visit,

0:38:17 > 0:38:19that's for sure.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21This is a major, major decision,

0:38:21 > 0:38:24but in my view, you've got to go with your heart.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27Do what your heart tells you and you'll be happy.

0:38:27 > 0:38:30We do consider you some of our closest friends, and you've made us

0:38:30 > 0:38:32so welcome here in Norwich, and we're so grateful for everything

0:38:32 > 0:38:37you've done for us. But that being said, we'll support whatever decision you make,

0:38:37 > 0:38:40and we'll help you, and we will throw you the best leaving party ever.

0:38:40 > 0:38:43LAUGHTER

0:38:43 > 0:38:45I think this is a really exciting opportunity,

0:38:45 > 0:38:47and I think you should jump at it. Carpe diem.

0:38:47 > 0:38:50You've always made the right decisions,

0:38:50 > 0:38:53you've always managed to evaluate everything correctly.

0:38:53 > 0:38:55So I'm sure you'll do very well.

0:38:57 > 0:38:58Good luck with everything.

0:39:02 > 0:39:03Awesome.

0:39:03 > 0:39:05So, what do you think, guys?

0:39:05 > 0:39:07That was very emotional.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09Very emotional, was it?

0:39:09 > 0:39:12Our friends saying how they'll, like, miss us.

0:39:12 > 0:39:15I think it's nice that people would want us to, like, follow our...

0:39:15 > 0:39:18follow whatever we want to do.

0:39:18 > 0:39:22But it is, it is going to be really sad, like, when we leave

0:39:22 > 0:39:26all of our friends behind.

0:39:26 > 0:39:27At the start of the week,

0:39:27 > 0:39:31the Santa Clara-De Magdalenes set New Zealand a challenge -

0:39:31 > 0:39:33"Wow us all and we'll move."

0:39:33 > 0:39:36And after a slow start on the property front,

0:39:36 > 0:39:39it seemed to be doing just that.

0:39:39 > 0:39:43But messages from home always make families think again,

0:39:43 > 0:39:46and this has been no different.

0:39:46 > 0:39:48What would YOU do?

0:39:48 > 0:39:50It's time for the final vote.

0:39:51 > 0:39:53As they prepare to pack up and leave New Zealand,

0:39:53 > 0:39:57it's a thoughtful family that reflects on their trial week.

0:39:57 > 0:40:01This week has been one of the most enjoyable weeks I've ever had.

0:40:04 > 0:40:08Really, what we needed to see was whether the fantasy could match the

0:40:08 > 0:40:12reality, and, you know, we've got all of that information at our fingertips.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14But with such strong connections at home,

0:40:14 > 0:40:18how do Raphie and Tilly feel about their week?

0:40:18 > 0:40:20This week has been really fun for me,

0:40:20 > 0:40:24because we've, like, done loads of fun activities.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26The best bit about the week

0:40:26 > 0:40:30was the day out we had, because that was just amazing.

0:40:30 > 0:40:33And I also really liked looking around the houses.

0:40:33 > 0:40:35It was, it was really good.

0:40:35 > 0:40:39However, moving the children to the other side of the world is not

0:40:39 > 0:40:41something to be taken lightly,

0:40:41 > 0:40:44and Debbie has concerns about Raphie.

0:40:44 > 0:40:46I'm a little worried on Raphie's side of things,

0:40:46 > 0:40:50because he feels quite emotionally attached to his friends.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53I'm picking that up more and more as we go through this week.

0:40:53 > 0:40:55I really like New Zealand.

0:40:55 > 0:40:59Um, it's just I don't really want to leave all my friends and

0:40:59 > 0:41:03family and, like, my dad and stuff.

0:41:03 > 0:41:07Tilly absolutely will vote, I think, Kiwi.

0:41:07 > 0:41:11I think that Raphie is probably going to be undecided.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13We'll see how that goes.

0:41:13 > 0:41:17As the final vote approaches, minds are being made up.

0:41:17 > 0:41:19Well, most.

0:41:19 > 0:41:21But, yes, I know which way I'm going to vote.

0:41:21 > 0:41:23Yeah, I think I've got a pretty good idea of how I'm going to vote.

0:41:23 > 0:41:26I'm not really sure at the moment,

0:41:26 > 0:41:29but I'm sure I'll be able to decide by the final vote.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31We haven't been here for long,

0:41:31 > 0:41:34and, like, we don't really know everything about it,

0:41:34 > 0:41:37so I think it's going to be a tough decision.

0:41:37 > 0:41:40Perse remains determined that it's all or nothing for this family's

0:41:40 > 0:41:43dreams of a life down under.

0:41:43 > 0:41:48It'll take just one vote for the UK and the whole move is off.

0:41:48 > 0:41:49How will they vote?

0:41:54 > 0:41:58After an interesting and exciting fact-finding mission in New Zealand,

0:41:58 > 0:42:00our final vote goes to...

0:42:16 > 0:42:18- ALL:- ..New Zealand!

0:42:18 > 0:42:20Wahey!

0:42:20 > 0:42:23That's all four. Wow, Raph!

0:42:23 > 0:42:26I loved New Zealand this week, I thought it was excellent.

0:42:26 > 0:42:29The only worry I had was, of course, friends and family,

0:42:29 > 0:42:34but seeing them on TV really gave me courage.

0:42:34 > 0:42:36Oh, I just think New Zealand is so cool,

0:42:36 > 0:42:38and just...

0:42:38 > 0:42:40It made me vote for New Zealand.

0:42:40 > 0:42:45More disposable income, better job prospects, more interesting jobs.

0:42:45 > 0:42:47New Zealand all the way for me.

0:42:47 > 0:42:51Yep. On the whole, if I have to choose a cold,

0:42:51 > 0:42:54- I'll choose this cold.- Great. - LAUGHTER

0:42:54 > 0:42:59Well, in the end it was a unanimous decision by all the family.

0:42:59 > 0:43:02Hopefully, the Santa Clara-De Magdalenes can now

0:43:02 > 0:43:06progress to turning this vote into a reality.

0:43:06 > 0:43:10We wish them all the very best of luck in the future.

0:43:10 > 0:43:12- Kiwi hug! - ALL:- Kiwi hug!
