0:00:02 > 0:00:04Sheldon Fearon feels a move to Australia will help his family enjoy

0:00:04 > 0:00:06a better pace of life.

0:00:06 > 0:00:10I would like to see us sit down as a proper family, enjoy life,

0:00:10 > 0:00:14tone it down a bit. There is too much rushing around, you know?

0:00:14 > 0:00:15But his wife Shelly Ann

0:00:15 > 0:00:19is struggling with leaving her life in the UK behind.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21Change is good but sometimes it can be devastating.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25At the moment, I'm devastated.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31A trial week sees the family get a vision of how they might live...

0:00:32 > 0:00:37It said, "Fearon family! Come to me!"

0:00:39 > 0:00:43..before being brought back down to Earth by the close-knit family they

0:00:43 > 0:00:44have back home.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48It is not easy to just walk away and start over again.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51- It is not easy.- So, do we have to?

0:01:13 > 0:01:17Covering a landmass of almost three million square miles,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Australia has been hailed as a land of opportunity.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Promising sunshine, beaches and a strong economy,

0:01:23 > 0:01:27the attraction shows little sign of easing up, with latest figures

0:01:27 > 0:01:32showing over 28% of the country's population is born overseas.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38The Fearon family from Dagenham has reached a dilemma that needs to be

0:01:38 > 0:01:41settled once and for all.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45To stay in the UK, where they have a happy, settled and prosperous life,

0:01:45 > 0:01:50or risk it all on a move across the world to Australia.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54Over one trial week, they'll get to see where they might live,

0:01:54 > 0:01:58what they can afford and the jobs they could get if they emigrated.

0:01:58 > 0:02:03At the end, they'll come to a final decision and vote.

0:02:05 > 0:02:10After a journey lasting around 20 hours, the Fearons have landed in Perth.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14So what are Shelly Ann's thoughts on the journey?

0:02:15 > 0:02:16I'm totally shattered.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20I didn't get any sleep at all because I was watching.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25Expected him to be hopping like a kangaroo.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27And then they're saying, "Oh, my God, are we doing the right thing?"

0:02:27 > 0:02:30And thoughts going through my mind, because it's now decision time.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34Dad Sheldon knows that he's his work cut out for him.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38I'm excited but I'm a bit cautious, I guess.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40I'll prove to everybody, by end of the week, this is the place to be.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44You'll try to prove to me by the end of the week.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46The heat is on.

0:02:46 > 0:02:47Let's go.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Let's hope this week isn't too hot to handle.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Welcome to Australia!

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Meet the Fearon family.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04- They are dad Sheldon, mum Shelly Ann...- Hello!

0:03:04 > 0:03:10..Shelletha, aged 11, and Shellomi, who's six. That's a lot of Sh's!

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Originally from Jamaica, it's fair to say, in their case,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15opposites attract.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17We are two totally different people.

0:03:17 > 0:03:23She is more of the fiery type, she is more outspoken woman.

0:03:24 > 0:03:30Me, I'm just more reserved. I'm a person who chills and takes it easy.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Totally the opposite of me.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35He's very gentle.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37He's not romantic at all and it's a good thing

0:03:37 > 0:03:41that I don't like flowers because, you know, we'd have domestics.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Now, to add to their differences,

0:03:44 > 0:03:46Sheldon wants to make the move to Australia.

0:03:47 > 0:03:48Welcome to Australia!

0:03:49 > 0:03:51It's much warmer there!

0:03:51 > 0:03:53I'd stop moaning about the cold.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55I'll stop aching so much.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00We'll get to spend more quality time as a family together.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03I believe, the more time we spend together,

0:04:03 > 0:04:05the stronger the unit becomes.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Shelly Ann is less hot on the idea,

0:04:09 > 0:04:12but in some ways she feels responsible.

0:04:12 > 0:04:17I initiated it, about ten years ago, but he wasn't interested at all.

0:04:17 > 0:04:23And then we took a family holiday, two years ago, to Australia,

0:04:23 > 0:04:27and from the day we landed, that was it.

0:04:28 > 0:04:33He was dead set to move to Australia.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38But I still firmly believe he's seen the skin of things.

0:04:38 > 0:04:39Nothing is that easy.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Nothing is that perfect.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Do I want to start over at this stage in my life?

0:04:46 > 0:04:49Yeah, nobody wants to start over at this stage

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- cos, I mean, we're not particularly young.- Ah! Speak for yourself.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Yes, we're getting on.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58And how do the girls feel about a possible move?

0:04:58 > 0:05:02I think I would like to go and find out a bit more. Yeah.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07- If you start crying, I will laugh. If you start.- I'm not going to cry.

0:05:12 > 0:05:13For Shelly Ann, however,

0:05:13 > 0:05:17a move would mean separating from her beloved family.

0:05:17 > 0:05:18I've got five brothers.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23I'm the eldest. I'm like a second mum.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26I love them to bits.

0:05:26 > 0:05:32I was left with a charge by my dad, three days before he passed away,

0:05:32 > 0:05:38that, as you're the oldest one, I'm leaving my responsibility to you.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45Look after your brothers.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48I promised I would.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51I was 17.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53My youngest brother was four.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58Leaving them now, I know they're grown,

0:05:58 > 0:06:02but they still come to me, you know?

0:06:04 > 0:06:05Will I be letting my dad down?

0:06:05 > 0:06:09I know he's not here, but I made a promise

0:06:09 > 0:06:12and I don't break promises.

0:06:22 > 0:06:23I did it...

0:06:25 > 0:06:26..because he was a good man.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38One of them said, "You're abandoning the family."

0:06:40 > 0:06:42It's not my choice, it's not my choice. Erm...

0:06:53 > 0:06:55In addition to the family dynamics,

0:06:55 > 0:06:59there's one other concern that Shelly Ann has on her mind.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01We're a minority group.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04We don't know whether we'll be accepted.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06We don't know.

0:07:06 > 0:07:14And if they're not open-minded, I will be able to defend myself, but

0:07:14 > 0:07:18should I put my children in that situation?

0:07:18 > 0:07:24That they feel less of a person because of their race...

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Because of the colour of their skin,

0:07:27 > 0:07:30when there's beauty in difference but not everybody sees that.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34For Sheldon, though, it's something they can do together.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40Nobody said it's going to be easing. We know it's challenging,

0:07:40 > 0:07:42but we're a strong team.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44We've had many fights.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48We're not going to give up on this one. We'll fight to the end.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53We can make it. As long as we're together, we can make it.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04The family's base for the week is a rental property in the suburb of

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Belmont, a few miles east of Perth city centre.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12It's time to check out their temporary home.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14I think everyone's pleased.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Especially when they see what's outside.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21A swimming pool!

0:08:22 > 0:08:27Despite the excitement, though, the reality of now being in Australia

0:08:27 > 0:08:30is starting to hit home for Shelly Ann as she unpacks.

0:08:30 > 0:08:35Because I know the reason why we're here is to feed Sheldon's

0:08:35 > 0:08:39obsession, so to speak, it's decision-making time.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43So there is that added pressure.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46This is our life. It's not a holiday, it's our life.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52As the girls battle over their room, Sheldon is taking it easy,

0:08:52 > 0:08:54as Sheldon does.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57We're here for real now,

0:08:57 > 0:09:01and I need to prove to Shelly Ann

0:09:01 > 0:09:04and the girls that this is the place for us to be.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08But he knows it won't be an open and shut case.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13Shelly Ann, she's a bit unpredictable.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15I'm not exactly sure.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19I'm hoping by the end of this week that she'll be fully persuaded.

0:09:20 > 0:09:21I believe she'll come around.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32Back in the UK, the Fearons live in a three-bedroom house in Dagenham

0:09:32 > 0:09:36outside London and it's fair to say that the place they call home has

0:09:36 > 0:09:38been the house that Sheldon built.

0:09:38 > 0:09:45We moved in, it was Sheldon's sweat, time, effort and skills

0:09:45 > 0:09:48and it's a nice home for us.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51It's a comfortable place to be, a happy place to be.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54As much as the bricks and mortar, however, it's the location

0:09:54 > 0:09:57of where they live that matters most to the Fearons.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01Where we live at the moment is a very secluded area

0:10:01 > 0:10:04because it's classed as the village of where we live,

0:10:04 > 0:10:06with the parish church just up the road.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09So what would they want from Australia?

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Well, Sheldon knows.

0:10:11 > 0:10:16The girls finding the right school

0:10:16 > 0:10:19and...a nice dream house.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Perfect place as well,

0:10:22 > 0:10:23where the sun is shining.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28Find a nice church as well, where we can have fellowship.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Yes. That would be a dream come true for us.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36They have a budget of £400,000 to spend.

0:10:37 > 0:10:38Tidy.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44To find out what kind of home their money could get them in Perth,

0:10:44 > 0:10:47we'll show them three properties -

0:10:47 > 0:10:51two based on budget and a third, which could be their dream home.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Their search begins in Gooseberry Hill.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57Popular with families, it's close to schools, parks and

0:10:57 > 0:11:00reserves and straightaway the vibes are good.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03Love it. Outside.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05Yeah, this is exactly what we want, baby.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08This will do for us.

0:11:08 > 0:11:09Yeah, outside...

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Inside, the front opens up to the kitchen,

0:11:12 > 0:11:15which causes a bit of confusion.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19So you come straight in and then you're in the kitchen.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22Small and dated but it's not bad.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24Outside one point, inside zero!

0:11:26 > 0:11:27Let's have a look around and see.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31Round the corner, however, is the sitting area,

0:11:31 > 0:11:34although I'm not sure it's enough to win over Shelly Ann over.

0:11:35 > 0:11:40- I like this.- That's a bit better. It's all right. And the view.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43- Look.- I like.

0:11:43 > 0:11:48The outside is more appealing to me still, at this stage.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52Well, thankfully, the outside isn't too far away.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54What have we got here now?

0:11:54 > 0:11:56I've got no idea.

0:11:56 > 0:11:57But it's nice outside.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01This could be a nice barbecue area. We could do a barbecue over there,

0:12:01 > 0:12:04bring the food over here and everybody sit round the table.

0:12:04 > 0:12:09I don't see it! Not as a barbecue area, no.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11All right, let's have a look at the gym.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13- Did he say gym?- I like this.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15- Yes, he did.- That's all right.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17You get your belly down, love.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20Do some weights, do some squats.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22Get back my six-pack.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24You never had a six-pack.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28Poor Sheldon! Let's hope the first bedroom is up to standard.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31I hope this is not the master bedroom.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35If it is... If it is, Mum, I'm taking it.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Good. You'd have the sleep out there.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43The walk-in wardrobe, however, has given Sheldon a plan.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46What we should do, baby, we knock this wardrobe out,

0:12:46 > 0:12:48and extend the master bedroom.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51And lose the walk-in wardrobe.

0:12:51 > 0:12:52We're not doing that.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56Half a point because I like the wardrobe,

0:12:56 > 0:12:57but zero points for your idea.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00- Yeah?- But it's a good try.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04But the discovery of an en-suite could get him that extra point.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07Whoo! Ensuite.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09The bathroom is a bit dated, though.

0:13:10 > 0:13:11You're a plumber, mate.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14That, we can overcome!

0:13:14 > 0:13:16I'm here to rest, not to work!

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Best move on while you're ahead, Shel.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21Into one of the children's rooms.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23You'd have to declutter,

0:13:23 > 0:13:25you'd have to get rid of some of your toys.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27How can we get rid of toys?

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Because the room is smaller than what you have now.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32The master room is mine!

0:13:32 > 0:13:34LAUGHTER

0:13:34 > 0:13:38- OK, then.- If this house is to get Shelly Ann onside,

0:13:38 > 0:13:41then the outside space is going to have to seriously impress.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44And luckily, it does.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46- Is it a swimming pool?- I love this.

0:13:50 > 0:13:51Fantastic.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55This is beautiful. So that's two for me now.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57I love it. I love it.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01So what are the overall thoughts about property one?

0:14:01 > 0:14:05You got a point for the curb appeal, and a point for the pool

0:14:05 > 0:14:08- and the surrounding areas. - Thank you very much.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09But none for the house.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15But could they afford it on their £400,000 budget?

0:14:18 > 0:14:21- Cool.- Wait, so it's not a lot of money?

0:14:21 > 0:14:25- It's overpriced.- 426,000. - Yeah, it's overpriced.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28I wouldn't pay that. Sorry.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32The family move swiftly on to property number two.

0:14:32 > 0:14:37It's in Maddington, 12 and a half miles from Perth and, with plenty

0:14:37 > 0:14:41of family amenities close by, this four-bedroom home sits in a

0:14:41 > 0:14:43rare half acre in a former orchard.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45How will this place go down?

0:14:45 > 0:14:46I'm reserving judgment.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52Inside is...a bit of a let down.

0:14:52 > 0:14:54Oh, dear!

0:14:54 > 0:14:56This is quirky, I don't do quirky.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00It's bordering on being depressing.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05- It's not that bad! - Yeah, it is that bad.

0:15:05 > 0:15:06Thank you.

0:15:09 > 0:15:13Dated. You'd have to rip everything out.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15Oh, dear.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17This is the dining room.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20Living. Yeah, it's a bit dated.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23Two strikes, then.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Will the bedrooms finish this place off once and for all?

0:15:29 > 0:15:31Yeah, it's a nice big room.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33Yeah, but...

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Any rooms for improvement?

0:15:35 > 0:15:37This is very bright.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41One side is seriously dark and depressing, and the other two is,

0:15:41 > 0:15:44you know, light and elating, but small.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49It looks like outside is going to have to save things again.

0:15:50 > 0:15:51Ah! I see a swimming pool!

0:15:53 > 0:15:54This is nice.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57This is beautiful. It's a nice family area.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03Oh, look at this! So maybe, then, this could be the barbecue area.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06There's even a man cave for Sheldon.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09- Wow!- Wow!

0:16:11 > 0:16:15- This is cool.- How does the family feel now about this quirky house?

0:16:15 > 0:16:20Whether we can afford it or not, I don't think I would want this house.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23Their budget is £400,000.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30That's the same one as the other one.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33That's a lot less than they thought.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37- We could actually get this one, but...- We don't want it.- Yeah.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41Hopefully, property three can turn things around for Sheldon.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44Situated in Kelmscott, with shops and schools close by,

0:16:44 > 0:16:48will this modern four-bedroom home impress the family?

0:16:48 > 0:16:52When they arrive, their reactions are not hard to read.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54SHE SCREAMS

0:16:57 > 0:17:02- Yes! Yes!- This is cool, this is cool.- Five points.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04Five points.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07I want to get out!

0:17:07 > 0:17:10Inside, the excitement continues.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12Oh, my God!

0:17:14 > 0:17:15Fantastic.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21- This is beautiful.- Yeah, this is it.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25That's fine. It cries family.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27"Come and sit in me."

0:17:27 > 0:17:30Sheldon's like the cat that got the cream.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32- Wow!- Nice dining area.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34Couldn't ask for more.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36I love the surface - feel that.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38What's that, Sheldon?

0:17:38 > 0:17:42- Marble.- It's marble? I don't think we can afford this house.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52This is beautiful.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54It takes my breath away.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58And it's even got an infinity pool.

0:17:58 > 0:17:59Oh, wow!

0:18:05 > 0:18:10- One for you.- Back inside, the family check out the sleeping arrangements.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12Cool.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Ah! Master bedroom.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19This is absolutely fantastic.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23- Look at this. - You've got two showers.- My goodness.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25It's amazing.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27SHE GASPS

0:18:27 > 0:18:28Walk-in wardrobe.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33Yeah, if we can afford something like this, baby.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35I'd follow you to Australia.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- Straight away? - I'd follow you to Australia.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41That's a major breakthrough.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44I guess the children will need somewhere to sleep, too.

0:18:44 > 0:18:45Bedroom.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49Yeah, baby, this looks nice. See?

0:18:49 > 0:18:53It's fair to say that this place has blown everyone away.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57I believe that this is it, this has got everything we've ever dreamt of.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59I love it. I can't fault it.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02It's just waiting for us, whether we can afford it.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07Remember, their budget is £400,000.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09All right, shall we have a look then?

0:19:13 > 0:19:14- Ah!- Wow!

0:19:16 > 0:19:21- 539!- This house is worth it. We can go back and recalculate.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24We're willing to make some compromises.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27I'm feeling over the moon now because I've actually proven to you

0:19:27 > 0:19:30that the houses over here are just right for us.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33Property one didn't impress on the inside,

0:19:33 > 0:19:35but the outside made up for it.

0:19:35 > 0:19:41At £426,000, it was slightly over budget but still doable.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45House number two had a quirky interior, but they loved the outside

0:19:45 > 0:19:49and it was the same price at £426,000.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51But property three was perfect.

0:19:51 > 0:19:57At £539,000, it was over budget but that didn't put the couple off.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01So when it comes to property in Perth, will the family vote

0:20:01 > 0:20:04for the UK or down under?

0:20:04 > 0:20:06- Australia.- UK.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08Mum!

0:20:08 > 0:20:11What? Why the UK?

0:20:11 > 0:20:16We found that property that's ideal for us,

0:20:16 > 0:20:19but now I'm thinking about my brothers.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21We would need more space.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31If they are to afford an even bigger dream house,

0:20:31 > 0:20:34the pressure is on to secure the best jobs they can.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37Back home, Sheldon works as a plumber,

0:20:37 > 0:20:39a job that suits his personality.

0:20:39 > 0:20:40I love solving problems.

0:20:40 > 0:20:45I'm really happy when I fix a customer's leak or their boiler.

0:20:45 > 0:20:49I feel really satisfied, just to see that smile on their face.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53The only problem he can't solve, however,

0:20:53 > 0:20:55is just how long he's working.

0:20:55 > 0:21:00I'm on-call 24 hours per day, seven days a week, so when I'm coming in,

0:21:00 > 0:21:05Shelly Ann is going out. When she's coming in, I'm going out,

0:21:05 > 0:21:08so we don't really get to spend much time together as a family.

0:21:10 > 0:21:14Shelly Ann works for the police in the communications department and

0:21:14 > 0:21:16it's a hugely responsible job.

0:21:17 > 0:21:25We deal with every aspects of call, and I manage a group of 150 people,

0:21:25 > 0:21:28who deals with day-to-day running of London, basically.

0:21:28 > 0:21:33She has worked hard to get where she is and fears a move to Australia

0:21:33 > 0:21:35could put her career into reverse.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37Going to Australia,

0:21:37 > 0:21:40I might have to come back down the rankings that I am.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43There's no assurance that I'm going to get a job,

0:21:43 > 0:21:49so it is a massive risk and it is playing on my mind.

0:21:50 > 0:21:55Today, the couple get to explore their chances of finding work down under.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59First up, Sheldon is visiting one of the biggest commercial plumbing

0:21:59 > 0:22:01companies in Western Australia,

0:22:01 > 0:22:05where he's introduced to site manager expat, Bret Glover,

0:22:05 > 0:22:08for a tour of the huge project at Perth Stadium.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12They've got food and beverage, so, overall,

0:22:12 > 0:22:16there's 100 food and beverage outlets in this stadium.

0:22:17 > 0:22:22As Sheldon goes with the flow, we catch up with Shelly Ann,

0:22:22 > 0:22:26who's at the nerve centre for the WA Police Emergency Response.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31She's meeting with expat police staffer, Joanne Clarke,

0:22:31 > 0:22:33and, first up, she's keen to find out

0:22:33 > 0:22:37if she could get the same management role in Australia.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39In the UK, I'm in a senior position

0:22:39 > 0:22:42and worked very hard to get to that role.

0:22:42 > 0:22:47Is there any way or any equivalent I could come into that role?

0:22:47 > 0:22:50With that experience, I'd say you'd probably fit in to the role that I

0:22:50 > 0:22:51do at the moment, which is team leading,

0:22:51 > 0:22:55which is probably equivalent of supervising, where we're responsible

0:22:55 > 0:22:58for a team of between ten and 12 members of staff each.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01There's 14 teams, so day-to-day we're part of the operational

0:23:01 > 0:23:04running, quality assuring of their calls,

0:23:04 > 0:23:06plugging in and assisting them.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10Not quite the level of responsibility Shelly Ann's used to

0:23:10 > 0:23:12but will the wages match up?

0:23:12 > 0:23:15You're looking at about 80,000 Australian dollars,

0:23:15 > 0:23:20which, for you, would be the equivalent of about £46,000.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24That would be more money for less responsibilities.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28- Oh. Fantastic.- Have I sold it to you?- Partially, yes!

0:23:28 > 0:23:30Lovely. That's good.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34Back at the stadium, Sheldon is talking qualifications with Brett.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38One thing I did find difficult when I first came out here was trying to

0:23:38 > 0:23:40get all the qualifications.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43Plumbing's licensed, so you've got two licences over here.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46You've got a trade's license and a contractor's license.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49So you give the plumbing licensing board all your qualifications and

0:23:49 > 0:23:52then you do, it's called a migrant's course, which is three weeks,

0:23:52 > 0:23:54and there's no way round that.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56You have to do that license.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58Once I've got my qualifications,

0:23:58 > 0:23:59what sort of salary would I be expecting?

0:24:01 > 0:24:07It is long hours, but a typical plumber here would be earning above

0:24:07 > 0:24:11100,000 take home after tax.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13Job-hunting over,

0:24:13 > 0:24:16it's time for Sheldon and Shelly Ann to discuss their day.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22After tax, I'd be getting approximately 100,000,

0:24:22 > 0:24:26which is approximately £70,000 after tax.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28That's an improvement.

0:24:28 > 0:24:33The shift is a bit longer than some shifts over in the UK,

0:24:33 > 0:24:36but in time we can get that fixed.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39So how did your day went?

0:24:39 > 0:24:43What do you mean, the shifts are a bit longer? Like, how?

0:24:43 > 0:24:47- What are your hours?- So we start at six o'clock in the morning and

0:24:47 > 0:24:49- finish at four o'clock.- Right.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51So that takes away family time, doesn't it?

0:24:53 > 0:25:00Well, my day was informative and I could easily fit in, easy.

0:25:00 > 0:25:01Standing on my head!

0:25:01 > 0:25:06Well, you know! My worry is a bit like self demotion,

0:25:06 > 0:25:10so, at this moment in time, I don't know where I'm going...

0:25:11 > 0:25:13Or what I'm going to do.

0:25:13 > 0:25:17Right, time to vote and I'm not sure how this one is going to go.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22- Australia.- Australia.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27Wow! You surprised me there.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29Yeah, I'm unpredictable.

0:25:34 > 0:25:35Where do I strike the balance?

0:25:35 > 0:25:37Where do I draw the line?

0:25:37 > 0:25:40Because, for every achievement, there has to be a compromise.

0:25:40 > 0:25:41Indeed, absolutely.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51Halfway through their trial week and Sheldon's mission to convince

0:25:51 > 0:25:54Shelly Ann is hanging by a thread.

0:25:54 > 0:25:58And with the all-important financial reality check

0:25:58 > 0:26:00and messages from home still to come,

0:26:00 > 0:26:04something tells me he has a lot more work to do.

0:26:04 > 0:26:09First though, a day sampling the sort of lifestyle the family might

0:26:09 > 0:26:13be able to enjoy in Perth gives the couple a chance to gather their

0:26:13 > 0:26:16thoughts before moving forward to the second part of the week.

0:26:19 > 0:26:23One of Shelly Ann's biggest concerns about a move to Australia

0:26:23 > 0:26:26is whether it offers the sort of diverse community

0:26:26 > 0:26:27the family has enjoyed in the UK,

0:26:27 > 0:26:32so they're off to meet some people who might set her mind at ease.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35And as the Fearons arrive at Perth Caribbean Society,

0:26:35 > 0:26:40Nadine and Cass greet them with hugs and the family are soon at ease.

0:26:41 > 0:26:46Everyone is relaxed and enjoying this vibrant group of new friends.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50All in all, it's been the perfect way to spend some time.

0:26:52 > 0:26:53Fantastic bunch of people.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55Fantastic place to be.

0:26:56 > 0:26:57Sometime, change is good.

0:26:57 > 0:27:01It can be a breath of fresh air and I think I've got a

0:27:01 > 0:27:06breath of fresh air today. And I had jerk pork, which I love.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08So, yeah, it was good.

0:27:11 > 0:27:15Lunch over, it's time to work off a few of those calories,

0:27:15 > 0:27:18and what better way to do that than to get out on the water?

0:27:18 > 0:27:22But Sheldon might need some persuading.

0:27:22 > 0:27:23Are you going in?

0:27:23 > 0:27:24I don't want to.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28If you don't go in, you don't get a vote.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31SHE LAUGHS

0:27:31 > 0:27:32I believe I was blackmailed.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38- Off you go.- All right.

0:27:38 > 0:27:43- Why are you breathing so heavily? Stop panting.- I'm alive.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46Sheldon, you're letting me down. Come on.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50Look at Shelletha.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53I knew he wouldn't be able to do it, that's why I wanted him to go in.

0:27:54 > 0:27:55He doesn't like cold water.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59SHE LAUGHS

0:28:04 > 0:28:08To see the girls embarking on this experience

0:28:08 > 0:28:11is elating and they're happy.

0:28:12 > 0:28:18And it even looks like Sheldon has got the hang of it...or not.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21As Mum and Dad take a break, they reflect on the day's events.

0:28:23 > 0:28:27Coming to Australia and coming in this environment where the people

0:28:27 > 0:28:29are friendly and nice and welcoming,

0:28:29 > 0:28:32this is what we've always hoped for.

0:28:32 > 0:28:34We feel like we're with a family -

0:28:34 > 0:28:36a family away from our families.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39Let's hope Shelly Ann will buy into the idea.

0:28:42 > 0:28:47Yay! Today has surpassed some of my expectations.

0:28:47 > 0:28:52It has been totally, totally relaxed and just about the four of us,

0:28:52 > 0:28:54so that's what's important...

0:28:55 > 0:28:56Family.

0:28:57 > 0:29:01But Sheldon knows it's not always cut and dry with Shelly Ann.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05I don't want to get my hopes too high and then I'm...

0:29:05 > 0:29:08I just get dropped in it. I'm hoping she'll make the move.

0:29:09 > 0:29:14I'm hoping and I'm trusting and I'm praying. Yeah.

0:29:16 > 0:29:21So, after a day of lunch, laughs and larking about on the water,

0:29:21 > 0:29:23what way will the family vote?

0:29:27 > 0:29:29- Australia.- UK.

0:29:29 > 0:29:30Joking. Australia.

0:29:33 > 0:29:34- Mum!- I got you!

0:29:41 > 0:29:44Back in the UK, the Fearons are mortgage-free,

0:29:44 > 0:29:48but to find out how much they would have to spend on their dream home in

0:29:48 > 0:29:51Australia, we sent two estate agents to value their home in Dagenham.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54- OK.- I'm excited about this.

0:29:54 > 0:29:57Oh, wow. This is really nice living room.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00And the kitchen. This is a really good size.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04We need to do some modernisation, but apart from that it's very good.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10OK. So, yeah, the family bathroom has been extended,

0:30:10 > 0:30:13so a better size than we would expect it to be.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15And this is the master bedroom.

0:30:15 > 0:30:20Good size. Again, it needs a bit of refurbishment and, wow,

0:30:20 > 0:30:21that's an interesting view.

0:30:21 > 0:30:22Thanks for that.

0:30:24 > 0:30:26Best neighbours.

0:30:26 > 0:30:28So this is the third bedroom, which is a much better size

0:30:28 > 0:30:30than we might expect. So a good room.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32I hope he took his shoes off.

0:30:34 > 0:30:36In the current market conditions,

0:30:36 > 0:30:38I would resell this house at a price

0:30:38 > 0:30:43between £320,000, up to £340,000.

0:30:43 > 0:30:48- Oh, please.- For a quick sale, this house could achieve between

0:30:48 > 0:30:50£290,000 and £310,000.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52On your bike, missy.

0:30:52 > 0:30:57I would value the property at £370,000 to £375,000.

0:30:57 > 0:31:00- Now you're talking. - For a quick sale, £350,000.

0:31:00 > 0:31:04- The second evaluation is more realistic.- Yeah.

0:31:04 > 0:31:08Now it's time to see how the finances compare between Australia

0:31:08 > 0:31:11and the UK. First up, it's the food shop.

0:31:11 > 0:31:16Yorkshire tea bag. Oh, my God!

0:31:16 > 0:31:18£3.50 in the UK.

0:31:18 > 0:31:21£6.88.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23Yes, it's like double the price.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28Salmon, OK, you buy a lot of that.

0:31:28 > 0:31:30That's a bit more expensive.

0:31:30 > 0:31:34Doubled in price. £9.59 UK, £19.35.

0:31:34 > 0:31:38If we cut the salmon out, we save loads of money.

0:31:38 > 0:31:41- Are you joking? - We wouldn't be in minus.

0:31:41 > 0:31:42No.

0:31:42 > 0:31:44I think we'll get rid of the tea.

0:31:45 > 0:31:47You can't get rid of the tea.

0:31:47 > 0:31:48- Why not?- You have to drink tea.

0:31:50 > 0:31:52And when they add it up...

0:31:52 > 0:31:58That will be £85 per month worse off in Australia than in the UK on

0:31:58 > 0:32:01- our weekly shop.- Worse off isn't good, but it's not too bad.

0:32:01 > 0:32:05- It's not too bad.- It's manageable.

0:32:05 > 0:32:09- All right.- Sheldon can't believe his ears.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11But how will the bigger bills go down?

0:32:14 > 0:32:17So we go from no mortgage to 567.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21Oh. Water.

0:32:21 > 0:32:22Water is expensive here.

0:32:23 > 0:32:25Everything is more expensive.

0:32:28 > 0:32:35So our total outgoings in Australia is £852 per month worse off.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40- Yeah, that's a lot of money. - It's a lot worse off.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43The figures have come as a blow, but they still need to take into

0:32:43 > 0:32:45account their potential income.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48If we minus that from 161...

0:32:50 > 0:32:56So we'll be £912.84 better off per year in Australia.

0:33:01 > 0:33:03- It's a bit daunting. - Of course it is.

0:33:03 > 0:33:05We were expecting a bit more, but...

0:33:08 > 0:33:11It is what it is.

0:33:11 > 0:33:15Yeah, we're going to have to tighten some belts again.

0:33:16 > 0:33:19Isn't it? Which wasn't MY plan...

0:33:22 > 0:33:24..at this stage in my life.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31I'm not trying to burst your bubble, I'm just saying this is real.

0:33:36 > 0:33:40With Sheldon and Shelly Ann both feeling deflated by their

0:33:40 > 0:33:42calculations, which way will this vote go?

0:33:49 > 0:33:52- Australia.- Australia...

0:33:52 > 0:33:53With a little bit of doubt.

0:33:55 > 0:33:58I know it's not going to be easy, but together we can.

0:34:00 > 0:34:01OK.

0:34:02 > 0:34:06That's a nice come back from you saying I'm toxic to your dreams.

0:34:10 > 0:34:15One of the biggest issues for the Fearons is leaving Shelly Ann's

0:34:15 > 0:34:18five brothers and a huge social group behind.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21So how will the family feel once they've watched messages from their

0:34:21 > 0:34:23loved ones back home?

0:34:24 > 0:34:28Greetings to my family, Shelly, Sheldon, Shellomi and Shelletha.

0:34:28 > 0:34:31What's happening?

0:34:31 > 0:34:32Can they see you, Mum?

0:34:32 > 0:34:35Let's hope you're enjoying your stay in Australia.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38- Hi, guys.- Miss you loads.

0:34:38 > 0:34:45Shelly Ann is a strong, vibrant, outspoken woman.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47We love her to bits, but sometimes she's very annoying.

0:34:50 > 0:34:54She can defend herself and she defends her brothers.

0:34:54 > 0:34:59Sheldon is a brother that anybody would be happy to have.

0:34:59 > 0:35:02He's a dream brother, you know what I mean? He's easy going.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04He's always there when I need him.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07He's more like a brother than actually a brother-in-law, if you

0:35:07 > 0:35:10- understand what I mean. - Shellomi is like mum.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15Very bubbly, very cheeky.

0:35:15 > 0:35:16Shelletha is just like her dad...

0:35:18 > 0:35:22Very calm. Very respectful, very lovely.

0:35:22 > 0:35:27A couple of years ago, he was saying to me that he was thinking of

0:35:27 > 0:35:28moving to Australia.

0:35:28 > 0:35:33I thought he was having a laugh. I said, "OK, move to Australia."

0:35:33 > 0:35:38- I kind of accepted it very quickly anyway.- No, you didn't.

0:35:38 > 0:35:40Better environment for your family to grow.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42It's always good.

0:35:42 > 0:35:48I think that they should, you know, try to do it, even if it means that

0:35:48 > 0:35:50my heart is going to be broken.

0:35:50 > 0:35:54We've always had a strong bond and so, yeah,

0:35:54 > 0:35:56this is a challenge for all of us.

0:35:56 > 0:36:00- It is. It will be a tough one. - So, yeah.

0:36:00 > 0:36:04- It'll be a tough one.- And people don't realise how much somebody's,

0:36:04 > 0:36:08somebody means to you until they're not actually there, so I don't think

0:36:08 > 0:36:11they actually realise at this stage how much they're going to be missed,

0:36:11 > 0:36:13but I know they're going to be missed.

0:36:13 > 0:36:17She made a promise to our dad that she will look after us.

0:36:17 > 0:36:18Even though I'm a big man now.

0:36:20 > 0:36:22Because she made that promise to our dad...

0:36:24 > 0:36:27She still holds to it, up to this day, she still does.

0:36:27 > 0:36:3022 years later, she's still holding.

0:36:30 > 0:36:32They're big men now.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34They'll miss her, but they're big men.

0:36:36 > 0:36:40But I still...need my food every Sunday.

0:36:42 > 0:36:44I've been thinking about that. It's a big move.

0:36:45 > 0:36:50It's your decision, if you want to stay there, but let's hope you think

0:36:50 > 0:36:54about it quite well before you make that decision.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56Follow your heart.

0:36:56 > 0:37:01It's going to hurt like hell, but if it makes you happy,

0:37:01 > 0:37:05if it makes the family happy, then we'll support you 100%.

0:37:06 > 0:37:12Just pray and I trust that God will just make the way, you know,

0:37:12 > 0:37:16and the decision that you want to make, that it will be the right

0:37:16 > 0:37:19decision that you're making and everything will be well.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24Do what makes you happy and I'll be happy.

0:37:24 > 0:37:29I really want what's best for you and I know that, whatever choice you

0:37:29 > 0:37:33make, it will be for the betterment of yourself and your family.

0:37:33 > 0:37:36So, go for it. Good luck. And whatever your decision is,

0:37:36 > 0:37:38you've got my blessings.

0:37:42 > 0:37:45I mean, sometimes we don't say to each other that we love,

0:37:45 > 0:37:50I love you or you mean a lot to me, but when you're not there...

0:37:52 > 0:37:58..looking at this now, it really makes you appreciate your family

0:37:58 > 0:38:00and your friends, you know?

0:38:00 > 0:38:01How do you feel?

0:38:04 > 0:38:07She doesn't want to answer.

0:38:09 > 0:38:14It's not easy to just walk away and start over again.

0:38:14 > 0:38:15It's not easy.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17So, do we have to?

0:38:21 > 0:38:25At the start of the week, the Fearon family were split between

0:38:25 > 0:38:31Dad Sheldon's view of where their future lay and mum Shelly Ann's.

0:38:31 > 0:38:36The question now, has Perth done enough to get them both singing from

0:38:36 > 0:38:38the same hymn sheet?

0:38:38 > 0:38:40What would you do?

0:38:40 > 0:38:42It's time for the final vote.

0:38:43 > 0:38:46I think that's far enough, Mr Man.

0:38:46 > 0:38:50Has Sheldon been convinced a move is right for the family or has he been

0:38:50 > 0:38:53barking up the wrong tree?

0:38:53 > 0:38:55There's a future for us in Australia.

0:38:55 > 0:38:59We can achieve what we really want if we put our heart to it.

0:39:02 > 0:39:04With God, all things are possible

0:39:04 > 0:39:08and I firmly believe that we can make it here.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13However, Shelly Ann is still torn.

0:39:14 > 0:39:20I'm not shy from having a change, but do I need this change?

0:39:21 > 0:39:23That's the definitive question.

0:39:25 > 0:39:29In particular, she's struggling with the promise she made to her daddy.

0:39:30 > 0:39:32I can't go to Daddy and say, "Daddy, what's your opinion?"

0:39:34 > 0:39:36He's no longer there.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40I was left with a charge and...

0:39:42 > 0:39:43..I made a promise...

0:39:46 > 0:39:50..and now, in my mind-set, I'm breaking it.

0:39:52 > 0:39:55How I'm going to cope with that, I know it not.

0:40:02 > 0:40:06And what do the girls think about a move to Oz?

0:40:06 > 0:40:09I think Australia is better than England.

0:40:10 > 0:40:13The weather is better, definitely,

0:40:13 > 0:40:16and there is like more things to do around here.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19I don't want to leave my family,

0:40:19 > 0:40:21but I want to live in Australia.

0:40:23 > 0:40:24I don't know.

0:40:26 > 0:40:30I think my mum, I don't know if she wants to come.

0:40:31 > 0:40:35Sheldon is well aware that Shelly Ann is yet to be totally persuaded.

0:40:38 > 0:40:40I don't know if she has made up her mind,

0:40:40 > 0:40:46so I'm really wondering what she's thinking.

0:40:47 > 0:40:48It's crunch time.

0:40:54 > 0:40:56I've not yet made my mind up.

0:40:57 > 0:40:59I'm all over the shop.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03But hopefully, when it comes down to it...

0:41:05 > 0:41:09..with the help of God, I will make the right decision.

0:41:14 > 0:41:17And now it's time for the final vote.

0:41:20 > 0:41:25After everything that we've seen in Australia, our vote goes to...

0:42:02 > 0:42:07I'm overjoyed that you've actually decided to vote for Australia

0:42:08 > 0:42:10- We'll make it.- We'll make it.
