0:00:02 > 0:00:04Having survived challenging times,

0:00:04 > 0:00:07Gavin Stockley's convinced a fresh start down under

0:00:07 > 0:00:09is what his family needs.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14I'm passionate that I think it could be a wonderful thing for all of us.

0:00:14 > 0:00:18But getting wife Amy on board could be harder than he thinks.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22It needs to show me that we can achieve something better

0:00:22 > 0:00:24than what we've got in the UK.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26If it doesn't, then we're not going.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30A trial week in Melbourne reveals what life could be like.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32If we moved into a house like this,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34I'd be going to Australia in a heartbeat.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36But when it comes to the crunch,

0:00:36 > 0:00:40will the thought of leaving loved ones be too much to bear?

0:00:40 > 0:00:44I'm absolutely blown away that I'm even this torn.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Ultimately, I have to choose one or the other.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10The sixth largest country on Earth,

0:01:10 > 0:01:14Australia accounts for 5% of the world's landmass,

0:01:14 > 0:01:18stretching for 2,500 miles, from east coast to west.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21But with just over a third of the population of the UK,

0:01:21 > 0:01:24there's plenty of room for the 35,000 Brits

0:01:24 > 0:01:26that head down under every year

0:01:26 > 0:01:29hoping to make the country their new home.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31But it isn't idyllic for everyone.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34Almost half of those who move return back to the UK,

0:01:34 > 0:01:35their dreams shattered.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39Gavin and Amy Stockley from Hampshire

0:01:39 > 0:01:42have had a traumatic couple of years

0:01:42 > 0:01:46that's convinced them it might be time to move down under.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50But they'll be leaving a lot behind if they do.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53Across a trial week in Australia,

0:01:53 > 0:01:55they will get to see where they might live,

0:01:55 > 0:02:00what they can afford and the jobs they could get if they emigrated.

0:02:00 > 0:02:05Then, at the end, they'll come to a final decision and vote.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10The family's trial week begins with an epic journey

0:02:10 > 0:02:12from London via Dubai to Melbourne.

0:02:12 > 0:02:17And it's beginning to sink in just how far from home they are.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24The journey was long.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Mentally draining. And really you do appreciate

0:02:26 > 0:02:28you've come halfway around the world.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31It felt like it was lasting forever.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34I'm pleased to be off the plane, I have to say.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38And Gavin's only too aware of what's at stake in the coming week.

0:02:38 > 0:02:39It's really, really vital.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42I'm just hopeful this week is everything that we imagine it's going to be,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44and really looking forward to getting started.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48But there's a long way to go before the whole family commits to making

0:02:48 > 0:02:49it a permanent move.

0:02:49 > 0:02:54I think Dad will have to convince me quite a lot to move here.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Dad could be able to convince me to move,

0:02:57 > 0:02:59but it might take quite an effort.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03If it doesn't come off this week, it doesn't come off.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06No pressure, Gavin!

0:03:06 > 0:03:08As the family head out into Melbourne,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10he knows the next seven days will be

0:03:10 > 0:03:13his best shot of the life he's been dreaming of.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Meet the Stockleys -

0:03:22 > 0:03:23their dad, Gavin,

0:03:23 > 0:03:27mum, Amy, Madison, aged 12, and Cohen, who's ten.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31As a family, they're a tight unit,

0:03:31 > 0:03:32hardly surprising given they've had

0:03:32 > 0:03:36to endure more than their fair share of difficult times.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42Five years ago, mum Amy was involved in a collision whilst driving

0:03:42 > 0:03:43their young son, Cohen.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Although they both escaped major physical injury,

0:03:46 > 0:03:49the incident left her badly shaken.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50It was more psychological, really,

0:03:50 > 0:03:52that I'd been in a car with my son

0:03:52 > 0:03:55and this terrible thing had happened.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58And just ten months later, this time driving alone,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01history repeated itself.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03The driver behind me wasn't paying attention.

0:04:03 > 0:04:04Myself and the driver in front were stationary,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07so she hit us going 40mph.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10It was noise, there was glass flying around,

0:04:10 > 0:04:11I was in loads of pain.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14The fire service had to cut the roof off the car to get me out.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17Amy suffered multiple neck and back injuries,

0:04:17 > 0:04:19and the next few years became a living nightmare.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24Procedures, physios, injections, lack of sleep.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27The impact on our life was enormous.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31At first, Amy battled through on a constant diet of painkillers

0:04:31 > 0:04:34and sleeping tablets. But it soon took its toll.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39I didn't realise just how low and how empty

0:04:39 > 0:04:44I'd got to until I hit that point where I couldn't function.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48She, at one stage, did have a sort of a breakdown,

0:04:48 > 0:04:49and that was tough.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52As a husband and partner and provider,

0:04:52 > 0:04:54I felt that I'd let her down because

0:04:54 > 0:04:58I didn't see that coming in quite the significant way that it did.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01As Amy began the slow road to recovery,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Gavin began to feel the strain.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08The magnitude of everything we had been through over that past

0:05:08 > 0:05:1012 or 18 months struck me hard.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13So I went into my own depression.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16This difficult time was compounded

0:05:16 > 0:05:18by the tragedy of the sudden death of

0:05:18 > 0:05:20two of his closest friends.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26You lose people your age that are seemingly fit, healthy and well,

0:05:26 > 0:05:30it makes you realise how incredibly fragile it all is.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33It really shook Gavin's purpose for living, if I'm honest.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38I really did start to, as I say, reach my lowest ebb

0:05:38 > 0:05:42and wonder what it was all about, really.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51It took some time, but the couple began to rebuild their lives.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Determined to put the past behind them,

0:05:54 > 0:05:58Gavin has resolved to set his sights on brighter and hotter horizons.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02He decided that life is for living

0:06:02 > 0:06:06and was no longer happy with being,

0:06:06 > 0:06:08as he describes it, in the rat race.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13The dream for me of Australian life is about having more time to spend

0:06:13 > 0:06:16with the family, getting that real work-life balance,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19where I don't feel that I'm driving to work in the dark,

0:06:19 > 0:06:20coming home in the cold and the wet.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Through everything that's happened

0:06:24 > 0:06:29it's kind of created a want in me to not

0:06:29 > 0:06:32miss opportunities, but to really go and chase them.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39While Amy understands what a move could mean for all of them,

0:06:39 > 0:06:42for her, the decision to uproot and start again

0:06:42 > 0:06:46in a country they've never even visited can't be taken lightly.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51I love the idea of being outdoors with the kids,

0:06:51 > 0:06:52being in a warm climate.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56The opportunity for the children, I think, is great over there.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00But do you give everything up in pursuit of that?

0:07:00 > 0:07:04Amy's got valid concerns, and I totally accept those.

0:07:04 > 0:07:05And I share those, in fairness.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08- Obviously I don't want to be uprooting my family... - But you want to go anyway!

0:07:08 > 0:07:11No, I don't want to uproot the family and take them, regardless.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13But, as I say, I'm passionate that

0:07:13 > 0:07:15I think it could be a wonderful thing for all of us.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19She is also worried about cutting off the strong

0:07:19 > 0:07:23support network of those who helped her through the tough times.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27To be honest, without them I don't know how I would have got through.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30And having them on the doorstep is...

0:07:31 > 0:07:33..is enormous to me.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36It's been my lifeline, really.

0:07:36 > 0:07:41And Gavin's also aware of the emotional cost involved.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45The prospect of taking Madison and Cohen so far away and away

0:07:45 > 0:07:47from their grandparents is a tough one.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49I do feel guilty about that.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53But getting the children on board with the idea of moving to the other

0:07:53 > 0:07:56side of the world may take some work.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58We get a mixed reception from the kids.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02Sometimes they seem keen to pursue it, other times, more regularly,

0:08:02 > 0:08:03they're quite averse to the idea.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08At the moment I don't really want to move just because I don't want to

0:08:08 > 0:08:10leave all my friends and family.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13I feel like we would have a lot more time as a family together.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15But then other times I think I'm really happy

0:08:15 > 0:08:17with the friends that I've got,

0:08:17 > 0:08:21and I don't want to, like, leave them all behind.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Nevertheless, Gavin is more convinced than ever

0:08:23 > 0:08:26it's where his family's future lies.

0:08:26 > 0:08:27Through all the hard times,

0:08:27 > 0:08:30what has happened is that we've become stronger than ever.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34We will be strong enough to make a new life and really make it work.

0:08:34 > 0:08:39But Amy is adamant that the week ahead will have to provide the right answers.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43It needs to show me that we can achieve something better

0:08:43 > 0:08:45than we've got in the UK.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48If it doesn't, then we're not going.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55The Stockleys are spending their trial week in Melbourne,

0:08:55 > 0:08:58capital of Victoria, on Australia's south coast.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00The city plays host to almost a million

0:09:00 > 0:09:03international visitors each year.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07Their temporary base for the week is in the eastern suburb of Ashburton.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10What will Amy make of her first taste of Aussie living?

0:09:13 > 0:09:14Wow!

0:09:16 > 0:09:17It's really modern.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21I'm just grateful to have landed, to be fair.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25Time for a pick me up then!

0:09:25 > 0:09:29And with a cup of tea in hand, the Stockleys take stock.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31It feels really surreal that we're here.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34It's almost starting to feel real that we're actually doing it.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38There's an awful lot riding on this week and it's going to be exciting,

0:09:38 > 0:09:40I think. Hopefully it's all worth it for you.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43We'll know one way or the other, we'll get some answers.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46And let's hope it's Australia.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49- We'll see! - THEY LAUGH

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Back in the UK, the Stockleys live near Portsmouth,

0:09:56 > 0:09:58on the south coast of England,

0:09:58 > 0:10:00in a three-bedroom detached house.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04Since buying the property three years ago,

0:10:04 > 0:10:07they've worked hard to make it a place they're proud to call home.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11We've put everything we've had into this house.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14There's not a room that we haven't started from scratch with.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Blood, sweat and tears have gone into it.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18I think it'd be really emotional, actually, to walk away.

0:10:18 > 0:10:23However, with a budget of £320,000 for a home down under,

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Amy knows exactly what she wants.

0:10:26 > 0:10:31It has to be light and airy, it has offer space for us.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34We've got two children that aren't little any more,

0:10:34 > 0:10:37so they come with an array of stuff.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Including a wish list for Madison.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41I would love a pool.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45And I really want, like, a walk-in wardrobe in my bedroom.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47And Gavin is well aware that Australian homes

0:10:47 > 0:10:49will have to impress.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53If you don't fall in love with some sort of property out there within budget,

0:10:53 > 0:10:56I think that's going to be the one thing that Amy says,

0:10:56 > 0:10:57"It's not going to be happening."

0:10:57 > 0:10:59No.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05To give the Stockleys an idea of what's available in Melbourne,

0:11:05 > 0:11:07we'll show them three houses.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11Two on budget and one which could be their dream home.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15First stop is the suburb of Langwarrin.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18With plenty of schools, parks and shops on the doorstep,

0:11:18 > 0:11:21it's a family-friendly area.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25Will this spacious four-bedroom home fulfil the Stockleys' needs?

0:11:25 > 0:11:28- I really like it.- It feels far more rural and stuff, doesn't it?

0:11:28 > 0:11:29- It's lovely.- Yeah.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Things are off to a positive start.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34- High ceilings.- Wow! - That's nice, isn't it?

0:11:34 > 0:11:38I definitely like the idea of us having more of an open-plan family space.

0:11:38 > 0:11:39I could see us living here.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43- You'll find me at the bar! - THEY LAUGH

0:11:43 > 0:11:44This is so cool.

0:11:44 > 0:11:45It's great, isn't it? I do love this.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47It's a really special sort of space.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49For those friends we won't have!

0:11:49 > 0:11:54Oh, ouch! Just when things were going so well.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58- Hmm.- I don't really like it. - I really like the space.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02- The kitchen is not my taste. - No, same.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05Are things getting any more positive outside?

0:12:05 > 0:12:08- Hmm.- There's no grass.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Not quite the garden of our dreams, is it?

0:12:10 > 0:12:12- No.- No.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15It's not really what I'd want to be able to, like, play football.

0:12:17 > 0:12:18Oh, dear.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22Back indoors though, things return to a more positive note.

0:12:22 > 0:12:23- Wow!- Whoa.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26You definitely can't say there's not enough space.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28- It's a big space, isn't it? - Yeah.- That's plenty big enough.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30The bed looks like it's barely taking up any room.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32- It's massive, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34And an en-suite is always a bonus, right?

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Obviously, we've not got an en-suite at home.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- It'd be a nice thing to have. - It definitely needs updating.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45Well, Madison is definitely pleased with her bedroom.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48- It's got a wardrobe. - Oh, a built-in wardrobe.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51- Mads is happy.- This is literally, like, my dream bedroom.

0:12:51 > 0:12:52Imagine on a nice day lying on your bed,

0:12:52 > 0:12:54doing your homework, looking out there.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56- It'd be cool, wouldn't it? - That'd actually be so nice.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58You can but dream, I guess.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02However, Cohen is not quite so excited about his.

0:13:02 > 0:13:03It's quite small.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07The two things that I'd mainly use would be my room and the garden and

0:13:07 > 0:13:08both are quite a bit of a let down.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10- Not good enough for you?- Yeah.

0:13:10 > 0:13:11That's all right.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14With mixed reactions to this property,

0:13:14 > 0:13:18is it somewhere the family would relocate half a world away for?

0:13:20 > 0:13:23It's a really nice house. I think it's missing a few features

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- that are really important to us moving.- Yeah, I agree.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29I'm thinking 300,000.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32OK. I'm thinking it might be slightly over that.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Maybe 310. What you think, Maddy?

0:13:34 > 0:13:36I reckon about 300.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40Probably around £310,000.

0:13:40 > 0:13:41Let's a look.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44The Stockleys have a budget of £320,000.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54Oh! That's quite disappointing, actually.

0:13:54 > 0:13:59Cos I think I had envisaged it to be underbudget because it needs

0:13:59 > 0:14:02- modernising.- It's a shame it's top end of budget...

0:14:02 > 0:14:05- Yeah. I feel a bit deflated. - ..and not what we need.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08Things aren't looking good for Gavin's dreams

0:14:08 > 0:14:09of a fresh start down under.

0:14:09 > 0:14:14But hopefully the next property can get things back on track.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18It's in Carrum Downs, an established suburb 45 minutes' drive

0:14:18 > 0:14:19from Melbourne city centre.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Will this four-bedroom family home be more to their taste?

0:14:28 > 0:14:31- This is cosy.- Oh, wow. I wasn't expecting that.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34- This feels like the UK.- I was going to say, that's exactly what I was thinking.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36- It feels like a living room we'd have at home.- Yeah. I like this.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40- Happy.- And the positive vibe continues as they explore.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Oh!

0:14:42 > 0:14:44Wow, was not expecting that.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46- Everything is so cute. - Lovely, isn't it?

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Feeling pretty dumbfounded, to be honest.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51This kind of open-plan family environment

0:14:51 > 0:14:54is exactly what I would want.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57But not everyone's quite so enthused.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01- COHEN:- I don't know, I just feel like it's too old-fashioned.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05- I'm not picking up on old-fashioned. - Oh, I am.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08But, Amy, maybe Cohen has a point.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10Our kitchen at home is much more modern and far bigger.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12- Bigger.- Yeah. It's a lot bigger.

0:15:12 > 0:15:17For me, I would probably want it a little bit more contemporary.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19I think it's time for some fresh air.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24- I really like this.- It's lovely.

0:15:24 > 0:15:28- This is cute.- That would be a great entertainment space, wouldn't it?

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Yeah, I really like it. It feels like you're on holiday.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33It looks like the garden is a winner.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35- That is nice, isn't it?- Wow.

0:15:35 > 0:15:36You've got grass, Cohen.

0:15:36 > 0:15:37You can play football.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39- COHEN:- I should be able to play football here.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Ticking the boxes.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44- Ah, come round now! - It's not so old-fashioned.- Cool.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47Well, that's definitely a result.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51And once back inside, the main bedroom doesn't disappoint either.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53- This is nice, again. - Oh, I like this.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56- You wouldn't need to do a single thing in here, would you? - No.- No. Not at all.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58It's a really good finish, actually.

0:15:58 > 0:16:00Straight into the en-suite, then.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- Oh.- Oh, I like that. - It's much more modern, isn't it?

0:16:03 > 0:16:05Yeah. This is lovely.

0:16:05 > 0:16:06This is really nice.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08It's really beautiful.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11Though things get a bit heated by bedroom number two.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14Oh, this is nice.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16- Oh, that's nice. - This is would be my room.

0:16:16 > 0:16:17COHEN: This would be my room.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19Oh, look at my room!

0:16:19 > 0:16:21Whole of my life she's had a bigger room than me.

0:16:21 > 0:16:22Oh, my God.

0:16:22 > 0:16:23Can we rein this in, please?

0:16:23 > 0:16:25This isn't Jeremy Kyle.

0:16:25 > 0:16:29But thankfully, bedroom three is just as nice.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31- Oh, wow.- Oh, that is nice, isn't it?

0:16:31 > 0:16:33- This is so nice. - Another fitted wardrobe.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36It's got the grass, a built-in wardrobe and a bedroom you like.

0:16:36 > 0:16:37And it's probably out of budget.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40- Ah, yeah...- So could you all love it a little bit less?

0:16:40 > 0:16:43This house could be the one to convince Amy and Madison

0:16:43 > 0:16:46to move halfway around the world.

0:16:46 > 0:16:47What do you think?

0:16:47 > 0:16:50- I really like it.- I'd buy this. I'd move in tomorrow.

0:16:50 > 0:16:51I'd move in tomorrow.

0:16:51 > 0:16:52I'd move in tomorrow.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Let's hope the price is right, then.

0:16:54 > 0:16:58The family budget is £320,000.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06- Oh, get in!- My goodness.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08I'm really surprised that this is the same price

0:17:08 > 0:17:09as the first one we saw...

0:17:09 > 0:17:12- I am.- ..because this is way, way more what we're looking for,

0:17:12 > 0:17:16- I think.- Yeah. That, for me, cements a massive step up the ladder.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18It's a big step forward, isn't it?

0:17:18 > 0:17:19Yeah, definitely.

0:17:19 > 0:17:24Things are looking up for Gavin, and there's still one house to see.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28It is in Cranbourne East, 28 miles south-east of Melbourne.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32This suburb boasts a semirural feel with good transport links,

0:17:32 > 0:17:34making it accessible for commuting.

0:17:35 > 0:17:40Will this modern family home have the wow factor for the Stockleys?

0:17:40 > 0:17:41It's huge.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43It's a lot bigger than what we've seen.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46And inside makes a big impression, too.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49- Wow.- Blimey.- Wow, wow, wow.

0:17:49 > 0:17:55It is beautiful, but slightly too sterile and clinical for my taste.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57I really like it.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00So, a difference of opinion already,

0:18:00 > 0:18:03and that continues into the open-plan living area.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06KIDS: Wow.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08This is actually amazing.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10If we moved into a house like this,

0:18:10 > 0:18:12I would be going to Australia in a heartbeat.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14- You're sold.- I wouldn't even need to say bye to anyone,

0:18:14 > 0:18:16- I'm just here. - THEY LAUGH

0:18:16 > 0:18:17Here. Gone.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21- The other house felt really warm and cosy, and this one just doesn't have that.- Yeah.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23It almost feels like this would be lovely for a holiday for a couple

0:18:23 > 0:18:26of weeks, but would it ever become a home?

0:18:29 > 0:18:31I like the sofa. That's nice.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34Well, that's something, at least.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36And the upstairs does make an impact.

0:18:36 > 0:18:37- Wow.- Wow.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41I think this is an absolutely brilliant master bedroom.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44- Really impressed.- I think it's beautiful and I love the windows.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48It feels nice, but I can't kind of get rid of how the rest of the house

0:18:48 > 0:18:49makes me feel.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51Well, the good news is there's no fighting over bedrooms

0:18:51 > 0:18:52in this property.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56I think this would be my room. I like this room.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58The window is nice.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00I love the modern look on it.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04- MADISON:- This would be my room. - This is very you, isn't it?

0:19:04 > 0:19:08- There you go, it's got nice open wardrobe space.- Yeah.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11Upstairs is so much better than downstairs in this house.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13Sure about that, Madison?

0:19:13 > 0:19:16Downstairs may have something you haven't seen yet.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19Wow. It's got a pool!

0:19:19 > 0:19:22That's your wow factor, isn't it? People would be impressed with it.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25In Australia, if we could get a pool, then obviously I'd want it.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27But the thing that really strikes me is the barbecue area -

0:19:27 > 0:19:28- that just is amazing. - Yeah, I love that.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31I can imagine having friends over for a...get-together.

0:19:31 > 0:19:32Imagine, with the pool.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35- That would make this garden come to life.- Everything. Yeah.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38This property has impressed on many levels,

0:19:38 > 0:19:42but is it somewhere the whole family could see themselves living?

0:19:43 > 0:19:46Right, so I think we know Cohen is sold.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48But what about you?

0:19:48 > 0:19:51On paper, this is, you know, what we were looking for to fit the bill.

0:19:51 > 0:19:55I guess I hadn't appreciated it before how much...

0:19:56 > 0:19:59..I value heart and soul in a house.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02It's got lots of amazing wow features.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04Put them in the other house and then I think you really are talking our

0:20:04 > 0:20:06- dream home.- It just doesn't feel

0:20:06 > 0:20:09like somewhere I would see us as a family living.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11So not for everyone,

0:20:11 > 0:20:14but is it somewhere they could afford to live

0:20:14 > 0:20:16on their £320,000 budget?

0:20:17 > 0:20:20I'm guessing £450,000.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23I'd go nearer to £420,000.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25It only seems fair that you do it, Co.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35- Oh, wow.- Wow! It's priced fairly, I think,

0:20:35 > 0:20:39but it still wouldn't encourage me to consider buying it.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42It's interesting. We wouldn't spend £115,000 on having a pool in

0:20:42 > 0:20:45the garden, which is what boils down to for us.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47Well, at least Cohen knows what HE wants.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52I knew from the start this was a dream

0:20:52 > 0:20:57that maybe one day we might be able to achieve.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01So a mixed bag of a day on the property search.

0:21:02 > 0:21:06House number one had the open-plan living the family was after,

0:21:06 > 0:21:09but no grass in the garden meant a no-go.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11Despite a false start,

0:21:11 > 0:21:14house number two's interior won everyone over

0:21:14 > 0:21:16and at a price they could afford.

0:21:16 > 0:21:20And although Cohen loved the modern look of the dream house,

0:21:20 > 0:21:22with the rest of the family not sold,

0:21:22 > 0:21:24he could find himself home alone.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28So will the vote be home or away?

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Based on the three properties we've seen today, our vote goes to...

0:21:44 > 0:21:47- Australia.- Undecided. - Undecided.- Australia.

0:21:47 > 0:21:48So, why did you go undecided?

0:21:48 > 0:21:51I thought you got really excited there about that second one.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53I loved it because it was a lovely house,

0:21:53 > 0:21:54not because it was in Australia.

0:21:54 > 0:21:58I don't know if it's worth giving up everything else.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00It's not going to make me definitely want to move,

0:22:00 > 0:22:03but definitely over our house at the moment,

0:22:03 > 0:22:05I preferred property number two we saw today.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08See how the rest of the week goes and, hopefully,

0:22:08 > 0:22:10we'll turn that undecided the other way.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20With the family split down the middle on Aussie homes,

0:22:20 > 0:22:23it's more crucial than ever that the right work prospects

0:22:23 > 0:22:27come up trumps for Gavin if a move is to be on the cards at all.

0:22:29 > 0:22:30Back in the UK,

0:22:30 > 0:22:32Gavin's worked for a global recruitment company

0:22:32 > 0:22:36for the past 16 years as a learning and development specialist.

0:22:38 > 0:22:39I love coaching people,

0:22:39 > 0:22:42I love supporting people and seeing them thrive and do well.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46He's passionate about what he does,

0:22:46 > 0:22:49but it can take its toll on family life.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52My job does involve stay aways from time to time,

0:22:52 > 0:22:54early starts and late finishers.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57It would be great to sort of leave that behind and have

0:22:57 > 0:23:01a more normal working pattern that fitted with the family, ideally.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04Having previously worked full-time for a large bank,

0:23:04 > 0:23:07life has taken a different direction for Amy.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09She now works just two days a week,

0:23:09 > 0:23:12alongside studying for a degree in psychology.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15What I've learnt in my life experience has put me

0:23:15 > 0:23:18in a really good position to be able to help others

0:23:18 > 0:23:21that have gone through or going through difficult times.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23With one year already under her belt,

0:23:23 > 0:23:27Amy is hoping to complete her degree down under if they make the move.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30But whether the qualification will guarantee a career in Australia

0:23:30 > 0:23:33is a concern.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36I don't know how readily available counselling jobs are.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39Am I looking at working hard to obtain a degree

0:23:39 > 0:23:42for a job that doesn't exist over there?

0:23:42 > 0:23:46However, as the main breadwinner, Gavin's feeling the pressure too.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49Amy isn't in a position to commit to full-time work over there yet,

0:23:49 > 0:23:51so I need to earn a good income and

0:23:51 > 0:23:53secure an opportunity that's going to excite me,

0:23:53 > 0:23:56or else, probably, the move just cannot happen.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01In order to explore job opportunities down under,

0:24:01 > 0:24:05we've arranged for Gavin to visit one of Melbourne's top recruitment

0:24:05 > 0:24:09agencies, where he meets with regional director Ryan Lewis,

0:24:09 > 0:24:12where the news is both good and bad.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14So, Gavin, shall we start with the bad news first?

0:24:14 > 0:24:16Let's get the bad news, yeah.

0:24:16 > 0:24:21So, our nation has recently changed the visa requirements

0:24:21 > 0:24:24for candidates coming over.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26So HR have been taken off that.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30- Removed, yeah.- But there are other visa options that you can look into.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33I'll probably pick up with an immigration lawyer or specialist

0:24:33 > 0:24:35back in the UK and try and find out some more.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38You know, you've got longevity

0:24:38 > 0:24:40in a top, top business in the UK,

0:24:40 > 0:24:43so a lot of my clients would be very interested in that.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46That's great news. So if I can work around the visa,

0:24:46 > 0:24:47then there's a lot of good hope.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51So, visa permitting, things could work out.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55Meanwhile, across town, Amy's visiting Monash University,

0:24:55 > 0:24:58where she meets Professor Matt Mundy from the School of psychological sciences.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00- Hi, I'm Amy.- Hi, I'm Matt, good to meet you.

0:25:00 > 0:25:04First up, Amy's got an important question.

0:25:04 > 0:25:09Would my year of education from the UK be recognised here in Australia?

0:25:09 > 0:25:11I think the good news is a lot of it would be.

0:25:12 > 0:25:16You've studied some core components of psychology that would mean you'd

0:25:16 > 0:25:18definitely not be starting from scratch.

0:25:18 > 0:25:19Brilliant, that's great news.

0:25:19 > 0:25:23But could it all lead to a viable career?

0:25:23 > 0:25:25After you've completed your bachelors,

0:25:25 > 0:25:26you would do an honours year.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29So after four years, you're eligible in Australia

0:25:29 > 0:25:31to register as a psychologist if you have

0:25:31 > 0:25:34someone to supervise you for two more years after that.

0:25:34 > 0:25:35I see, OK.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37So the prospects are actually really good.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39All positives so far.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41And the salary?

0:25:41 > 0:25:43Under supervision, you can probably expect around

0:25:43 > 0:25:46- £40,000, £40,000 to £42,000.- OK.

0:25:46 > 0:25:52But once you have maybe qualified in a specialisation,

0:25:52 > 0:25:53so perhaps a masters in counselling

0:25:53 > 0:25:56or a doctorate in clinical psychology or something like that,

0:25:56 > 0:26:01that figure goes up to between £45,000 to £50,000

0:26:01 > 0:26:02as a sort of starting figure.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05That's much better than I expected, to be honest.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10So, if Amy could have her cake and eat it down under,

0:26:10 > 0:26:12can Gavin do exactly the same?

0:26:12 > 0:26:15So, Ryan, I guess the all-important question, really,

0:26:15 > 0:26:18is what sort of salary do you think I might be able to expect?

0:26:18 > 0:26:21So, really, depending on the organisation,

0:26:21 > 0:26:24you can expect £50,000 to £55,000 per annum.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27It could be up to 10K in either direction of that.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30Wow, OK, that's really interesting. That's good news.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32It's higher than I earn back home in the UK,

0:26:32 > 0:26:36so that gives me some really interesting food for thought.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40Sounds like the money is right, but what about the work-life balance?

0:26:40 > 0:26:44Overall, Melbourne has a good work-life balance

0:26:44 > 0:26:47and you'd be able to find an organisation

0:26:47 > 0:26:51that you won't have to work too hard, and be a dad first

0:26:51 > 0:26:54and a L&D specialist second.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56Exactly what Gavin wanted to hear.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59So it's been a positive day for the couple.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03They meet up to compare notes.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05So, tell me, how did today go for you?

0:27:05 > 0:27:07It went really well, actually.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10It was nice hear that, not only does the qualification

0:27:10 > 0:27:12that I've already got count for something,

0:27:12 > 0:27:14but also I could continue the learning here

0:27:14 > 0:27:16to still achieve my goals.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19And the salary expectations were higher than I expected and,

0:27:19 > 0:27:22you know, it means that I can contribute

0:27:22 > 0:27:24as well as pursue the career I want.

0:27:24 > 0:27:25That's great news.

0:27:25 > 0:27:29I should think you're really proud of yourself and it gives us clarity

0:27:29 > 0:27:32that the decision we made to give you a change of direction

0:27:32 > 0:27:34is the right one, whether we end up in the UK or manage

0:27:34 > 0:27:37to get opportunities to come out here.

0:27:37 > 0:27:38So how did your day go?

0:27:38 > 0:27:40My day was different.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43He was really, really complimentary about my skills, my experience.

0:27:43 > 0:27:44In terms of salary expectations,

0:27:44 > 0:27:47he suggested probably up to about £55,000.

0:27:47 > 0:27:48There is an element of bad news.

0:27:48 > 0:27:52As we know, the visa regulations have recently just changed.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54It's probably going to put quite a delay on our plans.

0:27:54 > 0:27:56We need to seek more information...

0:27:56 > 0:27:58- OK.- ..and keep our fingers crossed, really,

0:27:58 > 0:28:00and pray it's not the show stopper that it could be.

0:28:01 > 0:28:03With such bittersweet news,

0:28:03 > 0:28:06which way will the couple vote when it comes to work down under?

0:28:08 > 0:28:11Based on our work meeting today, our vote goes to...

0:28:17 > 0:28:19- Australia.- Australia.

0:28:20 > 0:28:21- You went Australia?- Yeah.

0:28:21 > 0:28:23That's a really positive thing.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25As far as the conversations today on the

0:28:25 > 0:28:29career prospects and my future, I'm really encouraged.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31Of course there's the issue with the visa

0:28:31 > 0:28:33that we do need to investigate more,

0:28:33 > 0:28:35and then we can be really pleased with today's news, I think.

0:28:35 > 0:28:38And it's a big step forward, seeing the Aussie flag in your hands.

0:28:44 > 0:28:47Halfway through their trial week,

0:28:47 > 0:28:50and it's been a decidedly mixed bag for the Stockleys,

0:28:50 > 0:28:55which means their Aussie dream could all rely on what happens next,

0:28:55 > 0:28:59especially on how their messages from home are received.

0:28:59 > 0:29:03First, though, they're off for a day in the great outdoors.

0:29:03 > 0:29:05Let's just hope the skies are a bit clearer.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10The family day out begins with one of Cohen's favourites -

0:29:10 > 0:29:12rock climbing.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15And he's got some words of encouragement for Dad.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18I've never done this, Co, you might have to give me a few tips.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20Don't fall and hold on.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Good advice.

0:29:23 > 0:29:24You're doing well, Co.

0:29:26 > 0:29:30Don't get distracted and remember, without me, you don't eat.

0:29:30 > 0:29:31Enjoy.

0:29:36 > 0:29:38It was good fun to try something different, wasn't it?

0:29:38 > 0:29:41And Cohen, certainly, I think was in his element.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44I think it's nice to scare yourself a little bit every now and again.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47Glad to feel the ground beneath their feet,

0:29:47 > 0:29:49the family take a stroll around Melbourne.

0:29:49 > 0:29:53But first, it's time for a bite to eat, Aussie style.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00So far, Melbourne's been living up to expectations.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04And later on, the day is rounded off with a surprise call

0:30:04 > 0:30:05from Gavin's mum and dad.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07Hi!

0:30:07 > 0:30:10- THEY LAUGH - Hiya, guys.- How are you all?

0:30:10 > 0:30:12We've had a barbecue today outdoors on the river.

0:30:12 > 0:30:13Who cooked, then?

0:30:13 > 0:30:14- Gavin cooked. - And me.

0:30:14 > 0:30:16I'm as shocked as you are.

0:30:16 > 0:30:18I was thinking, if we're going to be an Aussie family,

0:30:18 > 0:30:21I probably need to learn how to barbecue.

0:30:21 > 0:30:22We're really missing you over here.

0:30:22 > 0:30:26- It's a long way. Take care. - Love you all.

0:30:26 > 0:30:28Love you so much.

0:30:28 > 0:30:30- Bye. - Bye.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32That was nice, seeing Nan and Grandad.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35I don't know, it feels like ages since we have last seen them.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38How would feel if that was the only contact you had with your nan and grandad?

0:30:38 > 0:30:42I don't think I'd like to not be able to see them.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45Despite the difficult reminder of home,

0:30:45 > 0:30:47the day has gone down well with Cohen and Madison.

0:30:49 > 0:30:51I've enjoyed the fact that all four of us

0:30:51 > 0:30:54have been able to go out today and do things together,

0:30:54 > 0:30:57and I think if we moved here, then we would do a lot more of that.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01- MADISON:- Even though the weather hasn't been amazing here,

0:31:01 > 0:31:05I have enjoyed today because it's been something that's quite, like,

0:31:05 > 0:31:08different to what we would do normally.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10And even after yesterday's disappointing news

0:31:10 > 0:31:14on the visa front, Gavin's more certain than ever.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16I'm as convinced as I ever have been, I think,

0:31:16 > 0:31:18that Melbourne is a really, really great option

0:31:18 > 0:31:20and something that I want to pursue.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22So I'm still very much firmly behind the dream.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26But has it done enough to convince Amy?

0:31:26 > 0:31:29Whilst today has been lovely, and we've had a great day, we've had so much fun,

0:31:29 > 0:31:34it hasn't offered any further justification for the move.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37None of the experiences we've had here have left me feeling...

0:31:39 > 0:31:41..undoubted that Australia was our future.

0:31:42 > 0:31:47So with a lot to think about, it's time for the vote.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50Based on our great day out today, our vote goes to...

0:32:06 > 0:32:08- UK.- Australia.- Australia. Australia

0:32:08 > 0:32:10- You went UK?- Yes.

0:32:10 > 0:32:13And I'm disappointed I can't vote Australia too,

0:32:13 > 0:32:14but I have to be honest,

0:32:14 > 0:32:19I haven't experienced enough reason to give me enough motivation to say

0:32:19 > 0:32:21that we absolutely need to do this.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24You need to feel something, ultimately, really, truly special

0:32:24 > 0:32:27ultimately different, and you're not feeling that and I accept that.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29Seeing more of Melbourne,

0:32:29 > 0:32:34I do really like it and hopefully by the end of this experience,

0:32:34 > 0:32:36Melbourne will have won me over.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39I think all year round, it would be a really fun place to be.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42We'll continue with the rest of the week and see what else develops.

0:32:51 > 0:32:55Amy's very definite vote for the UK is a huge blow for Gavin,

0:32:55 > 0:32:57and with just days left to win her round,

0:32:57 > 0:33:00the finances will have to stack up.

0:33:00 > 0:33:03Getting the right price for their home in the UK will be crucial.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08They think it's worth £280,000.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11Will two local estate agents agree?

0:33:11 > 0:33:14Into the lounge. Decorated nicely throughout.

0:33:14 > 0:33:15Oh, I miss it.

0:33:15 > 0:33:18And bay window letting in all the natural light.

0:33:20 > 0:33:23You can see that this is very much the heart of the home

0:33:23 > 0:33:26and it's just a real social area of the property.

0:33:27 > 0:33:29Must be the master bedroom.

0:33:29 > 0:33:33Good size, again, smooth finish walls and ceilings,

0:33:33 > 0:33:35plenty of room there for storage.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39Really nice-sized garden.

0:33:39 > 0:33:41You can see that they enjoy it a lot,

0:33:41 > 0:33:44perfect barbecue area, seating area, going into the hot tub, of course,

0:33:44 > 0:33:47that we can enjoy on sunnier days.

0:33:47 > 0:33:52In today's market, I'd value this property at £325,000.

0:33:52 > 0:33:56For a quick sale, I'd value this property at £315,000.

0:33:56 > 0:33:57That's fab.

0:33:57 > 0:34:01In the current market, I would value this property at £325,000.

0:34:01 > 0:34:07For a quick sale, I would put it on the market for £315,000.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09I think the valuations are encouraging cos that's probably

0:34:09 > 0:34:11a little higher than we might have expected.

0:34:11 > 0:34:16That house is probably better than the property two

0:34:16 > 0:34:18from the property day.

0:34:18 > 0:34:22Because of that, it sort of makes it harder to choose Australia now.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24- Oh!- Interesting.

0:34:25 > 0:34:29So, a thought-provoking viewing for the family.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32But now it's time for Gavin and Amy to compare the cost of living

0:34:32 > 0:34:35in Australia with the UK.

0:34:35 > 0:34:36Moment of truth.

0:34:36 > 0:34:39To help, we've provided a breakdown of living expenses,

0:34:39 > 0:34:41starting with their weekly food shop.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47OK, so pork, so in the UK it's £4.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49Crikey, in Australia it's £5.52.

0:34:49 > 0:34:51Pork's much more expensive over here.

0:34:51 > 0:34:52Yeah, a big jump.

0:34:52 > 0:34:56So, lager, a 12-pack would be £10.

0:34:56 > 0:35:00And in Australia, it's £17.25!

0:35:00 > 0:35:03- Uh-oh.- Oh, my goodness, you're going to have to give up lager.

0:35:03 > 0:35:06- Oh, no. The move's off. - SHE LAUGHS

0:35:06 > 0:35:09So, what's the damage overall?

0:35:09 > 0:35:13£50.77p more per week more in Australia.

0:35:13 > 0:35:16That's going to put a huge dent in our finances.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19- Yeah.- Already out-of-pocket.

0:35:19 > 0:35:21Next, they check the bigger bills.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24Basing their figures on the second property they saw,

0:35:24 > 0:35:29their monthly mortgage would increase by over £120 down under.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31It's not the good news we were hoping for.

0:35:31 > 0:35:33It's starting to look like it is going to be

0:35:33 > 0:35:36really, really difficult, isn't it?

0:35:36 > 0:35:38But Amy's encouraged.

0:35:38 > 0:35:40It isn't huge, considering how beautiful it was,

0:35:40 > 0:35:42not a significant jump, is it, to be able to get that?

0:35:42 > 0:35:46I loved that house, so, yeah, I'd be prepared to pay a bit more for it.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50So everything rests on whether their salaries can make up the shortfall.

0:35:51 > 0:35:57You'd be taking home £1,473 more per month here in Australia.

0:35:57 > 0:35:59- Makes it sound a bit healthier, doesn't it?- Well, yeah.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01And even with Amy working part-time,

0:36:01 > 0:36:04their combined salaries yield a result.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08So while I'm studying here in Australia,

0:36:08 > 0:36:10I could work three days a week,

0:36:10 > 0:36:15which works out at £1,575 per month here in Australia.

0:36:15 > 0:36:21And that means we'd be bringing in an extra £2,298 per month.

0:36:21 > 0:36:24Really?! Did we work that out right?

0:36:24 > 0:36:26HE CHUCKLES

0:36:26 > 0:36:28So taking everything into consideration,

0:36:28 > 0:36:31where does that leave them overall?

0:36:31 > 0:36:35So in Australia, we are going to be better off...

0:36:35 > 0:36:40- By?- ..by £1,680 per calendar month.

0:36:40 > 0:36:42Wow.

0:36:43 > 0:36:47Wow. We could live like kings!

0:36:47 > 0:36:50- That's got to help win you over. - I think I need to do them again.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53HE LAUGHS

0:36:53 > 0:36:54Interesting result.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56How will they vote?

0:36:56 > 0:36:59Based on our reality check today, our vote goes to...

0:37:06 > 0:37:08- Australia!- Australia!

0:37:09 > 0:37:12THEY LAUGH

0:37:12 > 0:37:13Good. That's good news.

0:37:13 > 0:37:18To go through those costs and not vote for Australia would be insane.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21But I'm pleased to be able to vote in line with you today.

0:37:21 > 0:37:25And now suddenly it feels it's more within touching distance for us.

0:37:25 > 0:37:27So, yeah, really, really good news.

0:37:33 > 0:37:37The finances have taken Gavin a step closer to the new life he craves

0:37:37 > 0:37:41for his family, but will his new-found optimism be short lived?

0:37:41 > 0:37:45The whole family sits down to watch messages from home.

0:37:45 > 0:37:47Go on, then, Cohen. Get it started.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49Hi.

0:37:49 > 0:37:51Hello.

0:37:51 > 0:37:52- Natural.- Amy is a diamond.

0:37:52 > 0:37:55Everybody needs an Amy in their life, without a doubt.

0:37:55 > 0:37:58Gavin, he's my best friend. We even went to university together,

0:37:58 > 0:38:00although that was pretty short lived.

0:38:00 > 0:38:03We enjoyed the beer a bit too much, to be honest with you.

0:38:03 > 0:38:07Amy, Gavin, Maddie and Cohen are the perfect little family.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11When Gavin told me that this was their plan,

0:38:11 > 0:38:12they were going to go to Australia,

0:38:12 > 0:38:16or they hoped to go to Australia... Oh, crumbs.

0:38:16 > 0:38:20I don't want them to go because I would miss them and it would be

0:38:20 > 0:38:22like having part of your heart missing.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25Being selfish, I don't want them to go to Australia,

0:38:25 > 0:38:28but, first and foremost, I want them to be happy,

0:38:28 > 0:38:32and if they can make it work and that's what they truly want, then,

0:38:32 > 0:38:34you know, they'll go with our blessing.

0:38:34 > 0:38:36As far as the kids are concerned,

0:38:36 > 0:38:40it will be a shame that they won't have their cousins to grow up together.

0:38:40 > 0:38:43I will miss them all massively.

0:38:46 > 0:38:50Us back in England, we'll still survive, we'll get through,

0:38:50 > 0:38:52but it's about the better life for you guys.

0:38:52 > 0:38:56You've got to do whatever you think is going to make you happy,

0:38:56 > 0:39:00we're here for you, whether you're in the UK or over the other side of

0:39:00 > 0:39:01the world.

0:39:01 > 0:39:03You know how we feel, we'd miss you terribly...

0:39:05 > 0:39:09..but the decision is yours, you know, you'll go with our blessing.

0:39:09 > 0:39:11You know we'll be supportive of you.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13We'll miss you and we love you.

0:39:15 > 0:39:16Yeah.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20I was just biting my lip trying not to get upset.

0:39:20 > 0:39:23- MADISON:- Even if life's absolutely perfect out here,

0:39:23 > 0:39:25we're still never going to have them with us.

0:39:26 > 0:39:31There's not a beach on the planet or a sunny day on the earth

0:39:31 > 0:39:35that I can see would be worth sacrificing...

0:39:38 > 0:39:40..those people out of my life on a day-to-day basis,

0:39:40 > 0:39:43because they are the reason I've got...

0:39:45 > 0:39:49They're the reason I've got through the last few years.

0:39:49 > 0:39:50I don't know.

0:39:52 > 0:39:53Sorry.

0:39:55 > 0:39:56At the start of the week,

0:39:56 > 0:39:59Gavin Stockley wanted to show his family that Australia

0:39:59 > 0:40:04could help them heal after a couple of difficult years.

0:40:04 > 0:40:07But it has been anything but plain sailing.

0:40:07 > 0:40:10Now, as they approach the final vote,

0:40:10 > 0:40:14it's time to see where their future lies.

0:40:14 > 0:40:15How would you vote?

0:40:17 > 0:40:18Seven days ago,

0:40:18 > 0:40:22the Stockley family set foot in Australia for the very first time.

0:40:23 > 0:40:26I think it really, truly has lived up to everything that I expected.

0:40:26 > 0:40:28I have fallen in love with Melbourne.

0:40:28 > 0:40:32I think it's a beautiful city and I could definitely see myself living here.

0:40:32 > 0:40:35The trial week has seen the rest of the family

0:40:35 > 0:40:38brought closer together to Gavin's way of thinking.

0:40:38 > 0:40:42That's the biggest positive spin that I could have possibly had.

0:40:42 > 0:40:46It's given us a sight into what Australia has to give us.

0:40:46 > 0:40:50I've loved everything that we've done, including the properties,

0:40:50 > 0:40:53to being able to go outside and have a barbecue.

0:40:53 > 0:40:57But heartfelt messages from home has given pause for thought.

0:40:58 > 0:41:00Even if we're living our dream life here,

0:41:00 > 0:41:02it's never going to be the same

0:41:02 > 0:41:04without our family and friends around us.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07We knew we'd feel sad because we had a lot of people back at home,

0:41:07 > 0:41:10but we didn't want to make anyone else upset.

0:41:11 > 0:41:15And it's left Amy feeling pulled from both sides.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19I'm absolutely blown away that I'm even this torn.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22I can't pick up the family and put them in Australia and give them all

0:41:22 > 0:41:24these wonderful opportunities

0:41:24 > 0:41:28and amazing experiences AND keep everything

0:41:28 > 0:41:30they know and love around them.

0:41:35 > 0:41:39I can't do both, so ultimately I have to choose one or the other.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44It's time for the final vote.

0:41:44 > 0:41:48Based on our great week in Australia, our final vote goes to...

0:41:59 > 0:42:03- Australia!- Australia!- UK!- Australia!

0:42:03 > 0:42:04UK, really?

0:42:04 > 0:42:06Don't get me wrong, it would be cool to move over here,

0:42:06 > 0:42:10but the fact that there's nothing that does need changing,

0:42:10 > 0:42:14I don't think there's any point in running the risk of moving the other side of the world.

0:42:14 > 0:42:17I think we expected all along it was going to be hard to say goodbye to

0:42:17 > 0:42:20everyone, but we can't let that stop us.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23I'm a bit shocked you've gone for Australia.

0:42:23 > 0:42:26Like we've always said, we want to regret the decisions we make,

0:42:26 > 0:42:29not the decisions we don't make, and this means a lot to you,

0:42:29 > 0:42:32so I should and will support you in it.

0:42:32 > 0:42:34That's brilliant.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37- And clearly Cohen needs convincing that it's going to be worth his while.- Yeah.

0:42:37 > 0:42:40I am troubled that it might be taken out of our hands.

0:42:40 > 0:42:43All we can do, I guess, is let fate take a hand.

0:42:43 > 0:42:45But like you, I think it's just proven to me

0:42:45 > 0:42:49that this is going to be a wonderful future for us.

0:42:49 > 0:42:51Yeah, shall we have a little group hug?

0:42:51 > 0:42:54THEY LAUGH

0:42:57 > 0:43:00After a topsy-turvy week,

0:43:00 > 0:43:04Amy decided that Australia had showed her enough positives

0:43:04 > 0:43:06to vote yes to a move.

0:43:06 > 0:43:10Now I guess all they have to do is get little Cohen on board.

0:43:10 > 0:43:12Whatever happens next,

0:43:12 > 0:43:15we do of course wish them all the very best of luck.
