0:00:04 > 0:00:07Hello and welcome to Wanted Down Under,

0:00:07 > 0:00:10the show that catapults a British family right across

0:00:10 > 0:00:11the other side of the world

0:00:11 > 0:00:15to help them make the biggest decision of their life.

0:00:15 > 0:00:20Paul and Jo Williams are determined to see if they can find a better life in Australia.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23To go there would fulfil a huge ambition for Paul.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25I'm seeing it for the four of us as a real adventure.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Because we've been talking about it for so long

0:00:27 > 0:00:30and it's something that I've wanted to do, it's like it's not real.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34And to emigrate would be a hard decision for Jo.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36I think I'd get extremely homesick.

0:00:36 > 0:00:42Although I like my own company, to have days and days and days of it - I'd absolutely hate it.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44And it would mean an enormous sacrifice.

0:00:44 > 0:00:49Paul's daughter, Alice, from a previous marriage, wouldn't be able to move with them.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52He's optimistic she'd join them when she's old enough.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55If we were to move out here and Alice decide not to come,

0:00:55 > 0:00:59I'd be gutted. Ultimately, she's my daughter, I love her to bits.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00She's a huge part of my life.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04If she were to decide to not come out here, it'd be heart-wrenching. It really would.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06So, will that leave the Williams' plans

0:01:06 > 0:01:08to move hanging in the balance?

0:01:08 > 0:01:12Or will they decide to go where they're Wanted Down Under?

0:01:34 > 0:01:39For many Brits, the gloomy economic forecast is making

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Australia's relatively sunny economy look tempting.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46And, for anyone who's under 45 and on the skills shortage list,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49a new life Down Under could be a thrilling possibility.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Last year, over 60 Brits a day made that leap,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56but how tough was that decision?

0:01:56 > 0:02:00We've given 20 British families the chance they've always dreamed of,

0:02:00 > 0:02:04to swap their lives in the UK for a new life Down Under.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07After a week, they'll get to vote one way or the other.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Will they stay in the UK or will they move to Australia?

0:02:11 > 0:02:14The Williams family lives in a village in Leicestershire

0:02:14 > 0:02:18and consists of Dad, Paul, Mum, Jo and their daughters,

0:02:18 > 0:02:22seven-year-old Ellie and Abby, who's five.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Paul is a police officer for the Leicestershire police,

0:02:26 > 0:02:30who spends most of the day, quite literally, with his head in the clouds.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38No, this isn't Airwolf. Paul's work is a lot more serious.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44My job here is an air observer.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47I've been at this unit now for four years.

0:02:47 > 0:02:48The jobs that we do vary.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51They can vary from searching an area for suspects

0:02:51 > 0:02:54that may have hidden in people's gardens or in fields,

0:02:54 > 0:02:56through to searching for missing people.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58But we mainly support police officers on the ground.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01In my eyes, one of the best jobs you can do.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04For years, it's been Paul's big dream to live in Australia.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08A friend of mine moved to Australia about six, seven years ago now.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12I was lucky enough to go and visit him, on my own, it was great.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14I spent 10 days out there and...

0:03:14 > 0:03:17like him, I absolutely fell in love with the country.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Then I started to look on a website,

0:03:19 > 0:03:23realised that British police officers were quite sought after.

0:03:23 > 0:03:28Jo's hoping a move to Oz would give them a much needed change of pace.

0:03:28 > 0:03:29We've got a very fast lifestyle.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32I work, Paul works. You know, the kids are at school.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36He works shifts and it's very on the go all the time

0:03:36 > 0:03:39and from what we've heard, it's very much a slower pace of life.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Deep down, that's what we really want.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43But they'll have to be quick.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Time is of the essence when it comes to Paul's job.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50The concerning thing, at the moment, is the fact that I've heard

0:03:50 > 0:03:53that South Australia police, this year, the 2008-2009,

0:03:53 > 0:03:56will be the last recruiting campaign that they'll be doing.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59It's literally make or break time. Will we? Won't we? Sort of thing.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Half of me is really excited to go.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05You know, I can't wait. Every time I think about it

0:04:05 > 0:04:07my stomach goes over and I think it's gonna be brilliant.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10The other half of me, I have to think twice about it,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13I'm sort of stopping myself from doing it.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17I think it's because I am gonna like it and I'll have to make some decisions that...

0:04:17 > 0:04:19It's gonna be really hard.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23But a move Down Under wouldn't be without heartache for Paul, either.

0:04:23 > 0:04:28He has a 12-year-old daughter called Alice from a previous marriage who wouldn't be coming with them.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32That's the big issue. She's with us most weekends.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35We have her for a big chunk of time over the summer holidays.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38School holidays as well, she comes and stays with us.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40She brings her friends to stay as well.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42It's a nice relaxed atmosphere for her here.

0:04:42 > 0:04:47Alice was really young when we were introduced and we've got a really close relationship,

0:04:47 > 0:04:51which is brilliant cos not a lot of people can say that when they've got stepchildren.

0:04:51 > 0:04:52The thought of leaving her...

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Paul is optimistic about a solution.

0:04:58 > 0:05:03I may have rose-tinted glasses on and when it comes to the crunch, who knows?

0:05:03 > 0:05:09But, at the moment, having spoken to my mum, she'd be planning to come out to Australia once,

0:05:09 > 0:05:14if not twice a year, and she said each of them times she would bring Alice out with her as well.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16Also, Alice has just turned 12.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20By the time we've moved out and settle down, she'll be 14, coming on 15.

0:05:20 > 0:05:26That only gives it one year, probably two years to...

0:05:26 > 0:05:30make her decision whether she'd want to come out there as and when she's 16.

0:05:30 > 0:05:36All of us have got a really, really close bond and I think we'd be really upset to leave her behind.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38But, I don't think he's thought that through.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42How he will feel if he has to leave her.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45If the decision were to move out there, it would be very hard,

0:05:45 > 0:05:49to control how I felt at that particular point.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50It's not actually hit him yet.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53He's very much a person where he'll jump in foot first

0:05:53 > 0:05:56and think about it later, where I'm completely different.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00I mean, I actually think the kids will have a better lifestyle over there.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02It's just what we've got to go through to get there.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08To help the Williams discover whether it'll live up to their expectations,

0:06:08 > 0:06:12we offered them a week's trial of life in Adelaide in South Australia.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17We found three different lifestyles for our family to sample.

0:06:17 > 0:06:22One in the country, one in the city and one on the coast.

0:06:22 > 0:06:28Each one with the offer of a job and a brand new lifestyle for them to enjoy on their budget.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31First, let's take a look at the country lifestyle.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Where better to enjoy the Mediterranean climate

0:06:35 > 0:06:38than Adelaide's lush, green countryside?

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Situated on the edge of Cleland Conservation Park

0:06:41 > 0:06:46is the suburb of Green Hills, just 20 minutes from the city centre.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50A three-bedroom house here averages at £190,000.

0:06:50 > 0:06:56Not an enormous price to pay for a home in the beautiful Adelaide hills.

0:06:56 > 0:07:02The South Australia Police are currently looking for officers and are offering £22,000 a year.

0:07:02 > 0:07:07At Victor Harbour Police Station, Senior Constable, Andrew Mogg, is keen to meet you.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10I hear you're thinking of joining us. Let me show you around.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12OK, well, here's our police district.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15We patrol a lot of the rural, hilly country inland

0:07:15 > 0:07:18and three coastal towns that we patrol as well.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23OK, so here we are on patrol, just outside Victor Harbour.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26We've got an unfortunately high incidence of road death here

0:07:26 > 0:07:29in South Australia, so we do pay a fair bit of attention to that.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32When you get to Adelaide, give us a ring. It's a great place to live.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35So, that was the kind of lifestyle they could enjoy in the country.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Let's take a look at what's possible in the city on their budget.

0:07:40 > 0:07:45Adelaide has something to keep the whole family entertained.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Whether it be the cultural area of North Terrace

0:07:47 > 0:07:50or Rundle Mall and the nearby markets.

0:07:50 > 0:07:55The neighbouring suburb of Prospect is a great place to live.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00Here, a spacious three-bedroom home will cost around £200,000.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04You could sample a day with the specialist police division,

0:08:04 > 0:08:07the Special Tasks And Rescue Force.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11To give us the brief is acting Senior Sergeant, Brett Gerardy.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15This aircraft here is our primary aircraft for all police airborne operations.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18I'll now show you a few things that we do at Operation Section.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22Not only are we involved with helicopter operations at STAR group,

0:08:22 > 0:08:24we respond to high-risk situations.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28We also deal with VIP protection, public order, search and rescue and crowd control.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30It's a dynamic and exciting place to work.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33Be under no illusion, this is a serious job.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36We work hard, we train hard and we're a tight-knit unit

0:08:36 > 0:08:38and we're proud of what we do.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42If you think you've got what it takes, when you're in Adelaide, call and we can talk about it.

0:08:42 > 0:08:47It looks like their lifestyle could shape up pretty well in the city.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49But what about a new life on the coast?

0:08:50 > 0:08:53If laid-back living takes your fancy,

0:08:53 > 0:08:56the beautiful Adelaide Coast is the place to go.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59It's not just white sandy beaches and golden sunsets.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01There's a range of activities available.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04A short drive from the shops of Jetty Road,

0:09:04 > 0:09:09is Marino where you can pick up a family home for around £210,000.

0:09:09 > 0:09:15Whilst a little pricier than homes inland, this hilltop location makes for magnificent ocean views.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19But even the seaside needs watching over.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21For a starting salary of £22,000,

0:09:21 > 0:09:25you could join constables Bruce Rice and Kate Van.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28We're here at the control room of Glenelg police station.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31It's one of our smaller stations in a very nice, touristy area.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34As you've probably guessed, we're both from the UK.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38There are a number of differences that we've got over here, to what we had in the UK.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41One being that we carry a firearm and ammunition.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45Jetty Road in Glenelg has lots of bars, pubs and restaurants.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Most of the offences that we'd have to deal here would be

0:09:48 > 0:09:52public order offences and offences relating to alcohol.

0:09:52 > 0:09:57So, if you want to achieve more, come and work at Glenelg with South Australia Police.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03In all three options, Paul would be working for the South Australia Police

0:10:03 > 0:10:06and therefore his starting wage would be the same.

0:10:06 > 0:10:11The country option offers a healthier lifestyle where the property's slightly cheaper.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14City living comes at a price with homes more expensive,

0:10:14 > 0:10:18but it's the only option with a helicopter division.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20The coastal option is expensive property-wise,

0:10:20 > 0:10:23but this is offset by a more laid-back lifestyle.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29Three very different possibilities for our family to try.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31So, which one suited them best?

0:10:31 > 0:10:33MUSIC: "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals

0:10:38 > 0:10:42We thought the city option where the work involves helicopters

0:10:42 > 0:10:45best fitted the Williams criteria for their week in Adelaide.

0:10:45 > 0:10:52And, after touching down on Aussie soil, the family are all too aware of just how far they've travelled.

0:10:52 > 0:10:57That's a long way. That is...that's a long way.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01It seems like two weeks ago we parked the car at Heathrow and came over here.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04It's just been... quite an experience.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06After the first part, we'd been flying for 13 hours

0:11:06 > 0:11:09and we still had another seven, eight hours to go.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11Watched a lot of films.

0:11:11 > 0:11:16Their week ahead promises to be busy, but Jo's thoughts are already on more immediate plans.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20- Shower.- Shower, yeah! Smelly!- Clean teeth.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22Too much fur on teeth!

0:11:24 > 0:11:28So, it's into the hire car and straight to their rental property.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Their base for the week is a house right in the city.

0:11:40 > 0:11:45The Williams are staying in a two-storey Adelaide house that gives them everything they need.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50Watch this door.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53- Look at this.- Ooh!

0:11:53 > 0:11:54- Nice.- Nice ain't it?

0:11:54 > 0:11:56It comes with three bedrooms...

0:11:56 > 0:12:00- Nice, isn't it?- Yeah. - This is my room.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03Oh, look at this. Very nice!

0:12:03 > 0:12:05Have a look at the other room. Let's go and see.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07- Lovely, ain't it?- Yeah, very nice.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09..it's got nice, big wardrobes...

0:12:09 > 0:12:11You've got one hanger.

0:12:13 > 0:12:14Oh, yes!

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Oh, wow!

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Lovely, ain't it?

0:12:18 > 0:12:20..and, most importantly...

0:12:20 > 0:12:23We've got wine glasses, so that's good. That's all I need.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28But, we've saved the best bit till last. A hot tub in the garden.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31HE LAUGHS GHOULISHLY

0:12:31 > 0:12:34The problem with that, girls, is children aren't allowed in it.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37- Yeah. They can just watch on the steps.- No, they can't!

0:12:37 > 0:12:39They can. It's the Australian law.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43Hoh-hoh, hoh!

0:12:43 > 0:12:48- Oh, feel that!- Oh, wow! Wow! - That's lovely.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51Oh, sorry about that!

0:12:51 > 0:12:52THEY LAUGH

0:12:54 > 0:12:58It may be July, but that's the middle of winter in Adelaide.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00The sun's out, which is a good start.

0:13:00 > 0:13:01Very cold.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05I don't think we really prepared as well as we could have done.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Bit of a baptism of fire.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10- But it's dry at the moment. - We're used to a lot colder, anyway,

0:13:10 > 0:13:11- Well, you are.- Yeah.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13I've got a manly t-shirt, look.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15HE SHIVERS

0:13:15 > 0:13:17- I'm sure we'll cope with that.- Yeah.

0:13:17 > 0:13:23The long flight's given them time to reflect on saying goodbye to Paul's elder daughter, Alice.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25To leave her was horrific.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28She was waiting for me when I came in, looking out the window, waved

0:13:28 > 0:13:32and as soon as I walked in the door, she just sobbed her eyes out.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34- Went straight up to you.- Hmm. - You're starting now.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37Went straight up to you, gave you a hug, didn't leave her alone.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41She was just crying and crying and crying and how ever light-hearted

0:13:41 > 0:13:43I tried to make the conversation, she just sobbed.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Then that made us think, "Oh, flipping heck, what we doing?"

0:13:48 > 0:13:51It just made me think, she's so upset now, after...

0:13:51 > 0:13:53you know, two weeks, however long it is

0:13:53 > 0:13:58and if we did make the decision to make it permanent, you know...

0:13:58 > 0:14:00it'd be awful for her, wouldn't it?

0:14:00 > 0:14:02- Oh! It would be awful for us.- Hmm.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06If this were the day we were moving and we weren't gonna come back...

0:14:06 > 0:14:10you know, you were crying with all your mates and the way Alice was and everything as well,

0:14:10 > 0:14:15- I mean, if that was the day... - Hmm.- Oh, crikey!

0:14:16 > 0:14:18But, hey. Let's see, eh?

0:14:18 > 0:14:23The Williams are anxious to see what Adelaide has in store, but with thoughts of missing Alice

0:14:23 > 0:14:29already on their minds, the whole trip could be in jeopardy before the week has even begun.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38In the UK, the Williams live in a three-bedroomed, semi-detached house

0:14:38 > 0:14:43on the outskirts of Leicester, worth about £180,000.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50If they move to Australia, they would be looking to spend £200,000,

0:14:50 > 0:14:53that's around 410,000 Australian dollars,

0:14:53 > 0:14:55and would include a mortgage.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59But house prices in Adelaide aren't as cheap as they used to be,

0:14:59 > 0:15:02so, they may struggle to find a house within their budget.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06The first of the three properties we're showing the Williams

0:15:06 > 0:15:10is in the suburb of Prospect, a stone's throw from the city centre.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14It's a three-bedroom, two-bathroom property

0:15:14 > 0:15:19and at 430,000 Australian dollars, or £210,000,

0:15:19 > 0:15:21it's slightly over their budget.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24- Oh, lovely!- Look at this!

0:15:24 > 0:15:28- Ooh, this is nice...- Ooh, it is. - ..isn't it?

0:15:28 > 0:15:30- Nice.- Lovely.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34And straight away, they seem impressed.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36Look at the wardrobe. Look at this!

0:15:36 > 0:15:39- This is your room! - Oh, I see, my room!

0:15:39 > 0:15:42- Is this a dining room?- No.

0:15:42 > 0:15:43Reception room.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45- Nice and bright, everywhere.- It is.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49- My dad would like this. - Oh, fantastic!

0:15:49 > 0:15:51Look at this!

0:15:51 > 0:15:53I would have it set up exactly the same as this.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55Oh, ain't it lovely?

0:15:55 > 0:15:57Jo's spotted something she likes.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00- Now, that's what I call a wine rack. - Absolutely.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03It's really nice, yeah.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07- This is a real...- sort of family... - ..yeah, party room.

0:16:07 > 0:16:08Absolutely gorgeous.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13- Do you wanna have a look? This is lovely, ain't it?- Yeah, it is.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15- Quite nice and warm.- It is, yeah.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18GIRLS LAUGH

0:16:18 > 0:16:21- Oh, yeah!- Oh, my goodness.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23To stand here...cooking...

0:16:23 > 0:16:28wine in there, all opened up, all friends gushing through.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32- Friends?- Well...people we borrowed.

0:16:33 > 0:16:34Very nice!

0:16:34 > 0:16:37This is a party house, isn't it?

0:16:37 > 0:16:38It's nice.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41So we've established it's a party house,

0:16:41 > 0:16:43but has it fulfilled the rest of their needs?

0:16:43 > 0:16:47The only thing that puts me off is the bedrooms being on the front.

0:16:47 > 0:16:52Although they're gorgeous, I would prefer them upstairs.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55- Could you see us living here? - Yeah, definitely, yeah.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57It's just the bedroom situation, I would prefer...

0:16:57 > 0:17:01So, this house would be ideal for them if only it had an upstairs.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05So, perhaps property two will fare better.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09Being further out of town means they could get more for their money.

0:17:09 > 0:17:16Set amongst the Adelaide Hills, this house is again a three-bedroom, two-bathroom property.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20But this time, there's that all important second storey.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23- What do you think to this, then? - Gorgeous.- Fantastic.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25Nice and high.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28- Completely different, ain't it? - Talk about quiet. Listen to this.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31It's a bespoke cabin.

0:17:31 > 0:17:35The Williams would have to shell out 420,000

0:17:35 > 0:17:40or around £205,000 to make this their home.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42The sound of all the birds. You really are in the...

0:17:42 > 0:17:45- Yes.- A parrot just flew by there.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48It's lovely. Just very, very peaceful.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50Very quiet, very tranquil.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54The birds singing. This is, on first impressions, very nice.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56Judging by their reactions to the exterior,

0:17:56 > 0:17:58this could be their perfect house,

0:17:58 > 0:18:03but it's what's on the inside that really counts.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05- Oh, it's gorgeous!- Look at this!

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Oh, wow! This is lovely.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Just the whole thing, it's just so...open.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13- Talk about open-plan. - The openness is lovely.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16Oh, it's an old stove-type thing, look.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Do you know how many rooms it's got up here?

0:18:21 > 0:18:23- Oh, look at that! - It's a nice room, isn't it?

0:18:23 > 0:18:27So far, so good, but Jo's spotted a problem...

0:18:27 > 0:18:31- They're quite small though. The rooms are quite small.- Yeah.

0:18:31 > 0:18:32..or two...

0:18:32 > 0:18:34There's not a lot of storage space.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36..or three.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38It's a shower room, ain't it? There's no bath there.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40Oh, there's no bath, yeah.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43Thank goodness Ellie's found something to like.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45It's just nice and pink.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47I know. I thought you were gonna say because it's pink.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50For you two, you'd have to share a room.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52Cos this is it, really. That one and this room.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56Hang on, this property has three bedrooms, so where is the third?

0:18:56 > 0:18:58Oh, it's another bedroom.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02It's got pink bits on, Abs.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Oh, look. It's for, like, guests, I suppose.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07I suppose it would be, yeah.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11- Would you put the kids down here? - No. No way. No, definitely not.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14- Why not?- No. I'd prefer them upstairs with me.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16- Where you can see them?- Yes.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18So, what's the verdict?

0:19:18 > 0:19:23It's a lovely home and they've made it really nice, haven't they? But it's not really for us.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25First impressions are great. You walk in and wow!

0:19:25 > 0:19:27- It's the real wow factor. - Absolutely.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30It's the practicalities of it all afterwards that throw it.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32It's a weekend break house, I think.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35Plus, as well, I think I'd feel a bit isolated

0:19:35 > 0:19:39if I was to be here on my own with the kids if Paul's working.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43I think I'd feel a bit scared on my own at night-time,

0:19:43 > 0:19:47cos it's quite a creaky house. With us going around you can hear it creaking.

0:19:47 > 0:19:48At night-time I don't think I'd sleep.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50Do you like snakes and spiders, Jo?

0:19:50 > 0:19:53I really do not like snakes and spiders.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56Snakes'd be fine. That's OK, yeah.

0:19:56 > 0:20:01But spiders, anything that flies, apart from birds, I absolutely hate.

0:20:01 > 0:20:05- Hate.- So, countryside's quite good for you, then?- No.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08If I had lots of money, yes, you could get this as well

0:20:08 > 0:20:10and have it as a weekend retreat

0:20:10 > 0:20:13and have the one in the city as well, to stay there.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16But practical, money-wise, in the city, yes.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Here, hmm, not really.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21So, they've found themselves a country getaway,

0:20:21 > 0:20:24but to live in, it gets the thumbs down.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26Let's hope property three is more to their liking.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31It's a four-bedroom house, so bigger than the last

0:20:31 > 0:20:36and at 470,000, or £230,000,

0:20:36 > 0:20:39it's the most expensive of the three properties.

0:20:41 > 0:20:47And, with stunning views over the ocean, it's off to a great start.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49What can you see over there?

0:20:49 > 0:20:53- Look at that view! That is beautiful, isn't it?- Yeah, it is.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55Look at all that out there as well, look.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57- Shall we have a look inside?- Yeah.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59Oh, this is lovely.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02- Oh, wow!- This is nice and comfy.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04Yeah, really nice.

0:21:05 > 0:21:06It's huge.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09This is a big room as well, ain't it?

0:21:09 > 0:21:12- There you go, look, Jo. Your stash.- Yeah.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15With a lock on it, padlocked.

0:21:15 > 0:21:16Yeah, that's to keep you out.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18This is gorgeous.

0:21:21 > 0:21:22Oh, look at this, girls!

0:21:22 > 0:21:24- Fantastic.- It's really nice.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28Oh, wow! Look at that.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30Absolutely stunning.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Imagine, you're sitting here, it's either sunset or sunrise...

0:21:33 > 0:21:35With a glass of wine.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37- From the storage.- From next door.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39Oh, that sounds nice.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42And it's a sign they can really see themselves living here.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44Oh, this is a nice room.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46- Oh, yes.- Isn't that nice?

0:21:46 > 0:21:48- This is lovely.- It is, isn't it?

0:21:48 > 0:21:51The other good thing about this would be the view again out there.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Yeah, it's gorgeous.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55- This is nice, as well.- Oh, yeah.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58I'm confused now, which room would be ours.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00With a choice of not one, but three reception rooms,

0:22:00 > 0:22:04a large open-plan kitchen and vistas from every window,

0:22:04 > 0:22:07this is ticking all the right boxes

0:22:07 > 0:22:09and they haven't seen the outside yet.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Wow, look at this! It's nice to see lawn, actually.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16Yeah, it is, ain't it? Yeah.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18Look at that view.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20There's a bit down there with a fence, look.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22- That's beautiful, ain't it?- It is.

0:22:22 > 0:22:26- Absolutely gorgeous. - You could wave to the neighbours.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29- Paul, don't do that!- There's a bloke over there, I was waving at him.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32He'll think you're strange. You just... Stop it!

0:22:32 > 0:22:34What? It's what you do when you're neighbourly.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36I don't want to go now.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42There's even space for a pool if they wanted.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44So, do we have a winner?

0:22:44 > 0:22:47This one in particular is fantastic.

0:22:47 > 0:22:51It's by far the best one. It's what I had in my mind prior to coming out

0:22:51 > 0:22:55and having had a look around it now, it's just confirmed

0:22:55 > 0:23:01that you can get some good quality properties for decent prices.

0:23:01 > 0:23:05It would be a stretch, money-wise, but we could afford this.

0:23:05 > 0:23:07- It's affordable, isn't it? - To think we could live

0:23:07 > 0:23:10in somewhere like this, you'd never believe it normally.

0:23:10 > 0:23:15Obviously, there'd be certain things that we'd change, but you do that as you go along.

0:23:15 > 0:23:17Having looked around, it's minimal changes.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19No, it's definitely a dream house for us.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22Wow! That's a result.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24And, being close to the beach, it could also provide them

0:23:24 > 0:23:27with that ultimate Aussie lifestyle they're after.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30The Williams have seen a real variety of properties.

0:23:30 > 0:23:36The first, on the market for £210,000, was modern and open-plan,

0:23:36 > 0:23:37but lacked an upstairs.

0:23:37 > 0:23:42House number two had character and was cheaper at £205,000,

0:23:42 > 0:23:45but was impractical and too small.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48It was the final property that really hit the mark,

0:23:48 > 0:23:51providing everything the Williams wanted,

0:23:51 > 0:23:55although the £230,000 price tag means they'd have to stretch themselves.

0:23:55 > 0:24:00So, do they prefer properties in the UK or what they've seen in Australia?

0:24:00 > 0:24:02It's time to vote.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05We've made our minds up with regards to what we want to do

0:24:05 > 0:24:07and we're going to vote for...

0:24:09 > 0:24:11..Australia!

0:24:14 > 0:24:18The Williams family felt they could find a suitable property

0:24:18 > 0:24:22in Australia, but it all depends on Paul finding the right job

0:24:22 > 0:24:24to pay for the new lifestyle.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27He loves his work in the UK, but will he be so keen

0:24:27 > 0:24:30on what the South Australian Police have to offer?

0:24:32 > 0:24:35Back home, Paul is a police air observer,

0:24:35 > 0:24:38but a move to Australia could mean a massive sacrifice for him.

0:24:38 > 0:24:43It's a hard decision to make because I will be taking a step backwards.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45With the length of service I've got,

0:24:45 > 0:24:48I'm being paid as a senior police officer, Police Constable,

0:24:48 > 0:24:52to transfer out to the South Australia Police,

0:24:52 > 0:24:55you then start on a cadet's wage again, which is a huge drop.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58I would be back out on the beat,

0:24:58 > 0:25:00in the beat cars, walking around the beat,

0:25:00 > 0:25:02after 18 months and you're out of your probationary period,

0:25:02 > 0:25:08your money is then raised somewhat to encompass the service that you've got back in this country,

0:25:08 > 0:25:11but initially it would be a huge financial burden.

0:25:11 > 0:25:15Today, he's off to see the Special Tasks And Rescue Force

0:25:15 > 0:25:21to find out about his future job prospects in the South Australia Police.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23On the back of what's happening today,

0:25:23 > 0:25:26there is going to be some big decisions made that could alter

0:25:26 > 0:25:29my career path as well as my family's life.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32So, it's a huge decision I'll be ultimately making,

0:25:32 > 0:25:35with regards to what me and the family are gonna be doing.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39Meanwhile, Jo's taken Ellie and Abby to check out

0:25:39 > 0:25:42Adelaide Aquatic Centre as she comes to terms with the reality

0:25:42 > 0:25:44of being in Australia.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46Prior to coming out to Adelaide,

0:25:46 > 0:25:50all of us really, had got complete mixed feelings.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52And the Friday before I actually finished work,

0:25:52 > 0:25:55people were coming down from the offices upstairs

0:25:55 > 0:25:57and giving me a hug and saying, "Have a lovely time."

0:25:57 > 0:26:01As if I was going forever and... at that split-second I thought,

0:26:01 > 0:26:05"Crikey, this is how it's gonna be if we did decide to go."

0:26:05 > 0:26:07And the absence of her stepdaughter, Alice,

0:26:07 > 0:26:10is continually playing on her mind.

0:26:10 > 0:26:16I've got my two, but it always seems that a piece of us is missing and that's really, really difficult.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19But is Paul coping any better?

0:26:19 > 0:26:21You can tell it's on his mind. As it is all of us.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24But the girls have brought pictures of her and they're in their rooms

0:26:24 > 0:26:28and we've got a picture of her as well and it's just really strange

0:26:28 > 0:26:32with her not being here as well. This will be a tester for him, I think.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36Paul's meeting acting Senior Sergeant, Brett Gerardy,

0:26:36 > 0:26:38who gives him a tour around the hangar.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41- Hi, Brett. How you doing? I'm Paul. - Come in. I'll show you around.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43Lovely, thanks very much.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47This is the EC130, Paul. This is our primary police helicopter at STAR group.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49It's used mainly for high-speed pursuits

0:26:49 > 0:26:52and surveillance and looking for missing people.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56So, as you can see, the FLIR operator will sit on the right-hand side here.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00FLIR being Forward Looking Infra-Red, which you know all about.

0:27:00 > 0:27:01Yeah, we've got the same one.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04Do you have the live feedback to a communication base?

0:27:04 > 0:27:06We have a microwave downlink.

0:27:06 > 0:27:12A lot of our firearms teams, like your STAR team, would have portable, hand-held receivers as well.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16If we were at a firearms job, for example, they have the hand-held terminal there,

0:27:16 > 0:27:20we'll be giving them pictures and they can see what's around the scene,

0:27:20 > 0:27:22360 degrees around there as well.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25- How about we go for a fly? - Fantastic. If that's all right?

0:27:26 > 0:27:28On a training mission for the crew,

0:27:28 > 0:27:31Brett gives Paul the opportunity to see first-hand

0:27:31 > 0:27:33the job he could be doing.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37As Paul get a bird's-eye view of the city,

0:27:37 > 0:27:41Jo's thinking about the effect a move away from friends and family

0:27:41 > 0:27:43would have on her and the girls.

0:27:43 > 0:27:48Although I like my own company, to have days and days and days of it,

0:27:48 > 0:27:49I'd absolutely hate it.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52I wouldn't like to be at home while the kids were at school.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55I think I would get extremely homesick

0:27:55 > 0:27:58and it wouldn't be beneficial to me at all. I'd need to be with people

0:27:58 > 0:28:02and try to establish some sort of network of friends, again.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04I still don't know whether I could just up sticks

0:28:04 > 0:28:06and leave everybody behind.

0:28:06 > 0:28:09But, I've come here with an open mind.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11We'll see how we go.

0:28:11 > 0:28:12Did you enjoy that?

0:28:13 > 0:28:17As he comes back down to earth, the family's whole future

0:28:17 > 0:28:21in Australia hinges on Paul asking some vital questions.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24It's a huge risk to give up the position and salary

0:28:24 > 0:28:27he has in the UK and go back to being a cadet.

0:28:27 > 0:28:31But how long would he have to wait before he could get the job he really wants?

0:28:31 > 0:28:35I've got nearly 15 years' experience as a bobby in England,

0:28:35 > 0:28:38would I be able to join and then come straight on to

0:28:38 > 0:28:40this helicopter unit here?

0:28:40 > 0:28:43No, you couldn't. What you'd need to do is go through the academy

0:28:43 > 0:28:45and after the nine-month period,

0:28:45 > 0:28:48you'd go out on the road for 15 months as a general duties police officer.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51After that you'd have a couple of years on the road

0:28:51 > 0:28:54and then you'd be able to apply to come down to STAR group.

0:28:54 > 0:28:58Once at STAR Group, there's another probationary period of 12 months.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01After that period you'd be able to apply to come to the helicopters.

0:29:01 > 0:29:03That's not what he wanted to hear.

0:29:03 > 0:29:07With the knowledge that it could take longer than he thought to reach his goal,

0:29:07 > 0:29:10Paul's left wondering if this could all be worth it.

0:29:10 > 0:29:15They're a great bunch of people and if I worked here, I'm sure I'd be very, very happy.

0:29:15 > 0:29:20But, there's lots of hoops and lots of steps to go through prior to getting to this particular point.

0:29:20 > 0:29:23No doubt it's going to be extremely difficult for Paul

0:29:23 > 0:29:25to make the transition from the UK

0:29:25 > 0:29:27and he's an experienced police officer.

0:29:27 > 0:29:30Having said that, it's going to be a three to four year period

0:29:30 > 0:29:32before Paul even looks at a helicopter.

0:29:32 > 0:29:34It's just how much he wants to be here

0:29:34 > 0:29:38and his determination and motivation to do it.

0:29:38 > 0:29:42It's like taking ten huge steps backwards,

0:29:42 > 0:29:46but that has got to be balanced up against the lifestyle that you'd be leading out here anyway.

0:29:46 > 0:29:51So, big decisions to make. It's a long time to wait

0:29:51 > 0:29:54and ultimately, that's not guaranteed a job, either.

0:29:54 > 0:29:58It's a job I'd have to go for and get through the selection process.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00There's a lot to think about.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04If he decides he can't wait, Paul's Australian dream could be over.

0:30:04 > 0:30:06So, how will he vote on work?

0:30:06 > 0:30:10OK, I've been out on the STAR Team today, I've seen how they work,

0:30:10 > 0:30:13I've met the blokes, I've had a fly in the helicopter.

0:30:13 > 0:30:17I've got to weigh up whether this is a place for me to work

0:30:17 > 0:30:19or whether I stay within the UK.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22So, after all this, I'd have to say I've got to vote for...

0:30:24 > 0:30:26..UK!

0:30:29 > 0:30:35Go to any UK supermarket and you're faced with a huge array of wine from Down Under.

0:30:35 > 0:30:41Australia is the world's third largest exporter of wine, selling more to us Brits than the French.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43So, what's the reason behind its success?

0:30:45 > 0:30:49The thing about Australian wine is it delivers on all levels.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52So, you've got relatively inexpensive, good value,

0:30:52 > 0:30:56well-made wines, which have really kind of made the market in the UK.

0:30:56 > 0:30:59But equally so, you've got lots of small producers

0:30:59 > 0:31:03making wonderful regional wines, right up the food chain.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07There are over 60 wine-growing regions in the country

0:31:07 > 0:31:09and over 2,000 wine producers,

0:31:09 > 0:31:13meaning a huge variety of bottles to choose from.

0:31:13 > 0:31:15I suppose the stereotype of Australian wine

0:31:15 > 0:31:20is big, ripe, powerful Shiraz and big, ripe, golden Chardonnay.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23But we have areas, I mean, an area like this, the Adelaide Hills,

0:31:23 > 0:31:26is similar in temperature to Burgundy.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28It really is quite cold.

0:31:28 > 0:31:30So, the wines we produce are more elegant,

0:31:30 > 0:31:33more delicate, slightly higher acid.

0:31:33 > 0:31:36They're not these robust, heroic Shirazes, perhaps,

0:31:36 > 0:31:38that our reputation was built on.

0:31:39 > 0:31:43So, things are looking Rose for Australian wine producers.

0:31:43 > 0:31:48People who, initially, were just happy drinking an inexpensive,

0:31:48 > 0:31:49unpretentious glass of Shiraz

0:31:49 > 0:31:53are now going, "Oh, that's pretty good, I wonder what else they do?"

0:31:53 > 0:31:58So, what we're finding is that people who initially started on some of the bigger brands,

0:31:58 > 0:32:04are now increasingly interested in the smaller producers and they're looking for the diversity.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07And advice to the British wine drinker?

0:32:07 > 0:32:12It just requires people to be a bit experimental and try some things that they haven't before,

0:32:12 > 0:32:16because you might discover something that's just fabulous.

0:32:20 > 0:32:24Paul Williams has fond memories of the time he spent in Australia

0:32:24 > 0:32:30a few years ago and firmly believes that, as a family, they could have a better quality of life Down Under.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33I spent 10 days out there and I fell in love with the country.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36Wife Jo is happy with her life in the UK

0:32:36 > 0:32:38and has mixed feelings about moving.

0:32:38 > 0:32:40Half of me is really excited to go

0:32:40 > 0:32:43and the other half of me, I have to think twice about it.

0:32:43 > 0:32:47I think it's cos I am gonna like it and I'll have to make some decisions.

0:32:47 > 0:32:48It's going to be really hard.

0:32:48 > 0:32:51But she did fall in love with a house in Adelaide.

0:32:51 > 0:32:54We could never be able to afford this in England.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56It's definitely a dream house for us.

0:32:56 > 0:32:59Hanging over everything, though, is the prospect they'd be leaving

0:32:59 > 0:33:03Paul's elder daughter, Alice, behind if they did decide to move.

0:33:03 > 0:33:07It's certainly made me think, "Is it feasible?"

0:33:07 > 0:33:11It's something I'm gonna have to think long and hard about.

0:33:11 > 0:33:17Will hearing messages from friends and family back home make the decision even harder?

0:33:17 > 0:33:20- Oh, dear me!- Right, book the taxi.

0:33:24 > 0:33:29The news from the police was a blow to Paul's hopes of moving,

0:33:29 > 0:33:31so they're taking the kids to Adelaide Zoo

0:33:31 > 0:33:33to see if a taste of the Aussie lifestyle

0:33:33 > 0:33:36will give them some encouragement.

0:33:39 > 0:33:41Hello. Oh, look!

0:33:45 > 0:33:46Ah!

0:33:46 > 0:33:48Oh, yeah. It's lovely.

0:33:49 > 0:33:51- So, Jo, would you swap the kids for a koala?- No.

0:33:51 > 0:33:53Husband, probably!

0:33:55 > 0:33:58- Very clever!- I'll go with you, Dad. - Thanks, babes.

0:33:58 > 0:34:02- I get so much abuse from you, it's unbelievable.- You love it, you know you do.

0:34:02 > 0:34:03Today sums it up for us, really.

0:34:03 > 0:34:08As a family, we've come out, we've experienced things we've never experienced before.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11I've held a koala, I've fed and stroked kangaroos. It's been great.

0:34:11 > 0:34:15And for the girls, as well, it's a real experience for them, as well.

0:34:15 > 0:34:18That's the positive thing about being kids,

0:34:18 > 0:34:20they adapt to every situation you put them in.

0:34:20 > 0:34:23- How you doin'? - I'm all right thanks, how are you?

0:34:23 > 0:34:24THEY LAUGH

0:34:29 > 0:34:31- Hello.- You'll be all right.

0:34:31 > 0:34:34MUSIC: "Love At First Sight" by Kylie Minogue

0:34:47 > 0:34:53So, the girls are fitting into the Aussie way of life, but what about Jo?

0:34:53 > 0:34:57I've noticed, in the last couple of days, she's been a lot quieter

0:34:57 > 0:34:59than she perhaps normally would be

0:34:59 > 0:35:03and I think she's missing friends and family and people around her.

0:35:03 > 0:35:06There's not been the contact that she thought there would have been,

0:35:06 > 0:35:09mainly for the time difference and it's only really feasible to ring

0:35:09 > 0:35:12either early in the morning or later in the evening

0:35:12 > 0:35:16and the messages she's had, are starting to get to her, I think.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19Since he's pointed that out I feel, "Yeah, you're probably right."

0:35:19 > 0:35:21I probably am missing everybody and I'm sort of...

0:35:21 > 0:35:24that's probably my way of coping, again, but...

0:35:24 > 0:35:28I'm going to ring everybody tonight, because that's what the matter is.

0:35:28 > 0:35:32The impact a move to Australia would have on Paul's daughter, Alice,

0:35:32 > 0:35:33is never far from their thoughts.

0:35:33 > 0:35:38Alice, bless her, she'd have loved this, she really would have. It would've been great.

0:35:38 > 0:35:40Living away from Alice, it's become a lot more real.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43If we were to move, I know I, personally, wouldn't be able to cope

0:35:43 > 0:35:47with leaving her behind and only her coming on holidays.

0:35:47 > 0:35:51The biggest deciding factor will be, what will happen with Alice,

0:35:51 > 0:35:54how she'll feel, what we can agree amongst ourselves as a family,

0:35:54 > 0:35:57including Alice and also Alice's mum, as well.

0:35:57 > 0:36:01It would be a huge, huge decision if it were a permanent move

0:36:01 > 0:36:02and that's perhaps a good reality check.

0:36:02 > 0:36:06That I had these rose-tinted glasses of how small the world is,

0:36:06 > 0:36:12it's only a day's flight, what with the internet, web cams.

0:36:12 > 0:36:15I was very flippant with them sorts of comments.

0:36:15 > 0:36:16It is a long, long way.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19If we did come out here, if it was the right thing to do,

0:36:19 > 0:36:21we'd have to wait and bring her with us.

0:36:21 > 0:36:24It's certainly made me think, "Is it feasible?"

0:36:24 > 0:36:28The Williams have spent a day of quality time together,

0:36:28 > 0:36:30something they say they want more of.

0:36:30 > 0:36:35But it's also reminded them that moving here would come with one enormous price to pay.

0:36:36 > 0:36:40With so much to consider, how will they vote on lifestyle?

0:36:40 > 0:36:42- Had a good day?- Yep.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45And we like the way that how friendly people are,

0:36:45 > 0:36:47how well looked after the animals are,

0:36:47 > 0:36:49and it was just well laid out.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51So, as a family, we're going to vote for...

0:36:53 > 0:36:55..Australia!

0:36:58 > 0:37:03It's been a week of tough decisions and it's about to get tougher still.

0:37:03 > 0:37:06How will the Williamses feel when confronted with the thoughts

0:37:06 > 0:37:08of their friends and family back home?

0:37:10 > 0:37:16We put together some messages to remind them of the people they'd be leaving behind.

0:37:16 > 0:37:18BOTH: Hello, Jo, Paul, Ellie and Abbey.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21Mum and Dad loves you lots.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23He's a big clown, but we love him.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26He's the life and soul of the duty sometimes

0:37:26 > 0:37:30when it's dead at 2am, so, yeah, we'll miss him.

0:37:31 > 0:37:34He's a nice guy, a good guy, and we'll miss his family, as well.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37We are close, yeah, we are close

0:37:37 > 0:37:42and we love to be together, we can make each other laugh so much.

0:37:42 > 0:37:45It's become more, sort of, an extended family

0:37:45 > 0:37:48rather than just neighbours.

0:37:48 > 0:37:53She classes us as sisters, not friends.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55Which I feel very privileged about.

0:37:55 > 0:37:58Erm, she's very sensitive, very kind,

0:37:58 > 0:38:03which is where the missing of family bit will come in...for Jo.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06The emotional tie, yeah, yeah.

0:38:06 > 0:38:08But I don't think that's insurmountable.

0:38:08 > 0:38:12I think it's something they're going to be able to try and take on board

0:38:12 > 0:38:14as a foursome.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17I think Jo would probably struggle...for a bit.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20That would be her main...

0:38:20 > 0:38:22you know, she'd miss everybody.

0:38:22 > 0:38:23We've known each other a long time

0:38:23 > 0:38:26and the only downfall is, when you move somewhere,

0:38:26 > 0:38:30you can't just meet people and have the same relationship overnight.

0:38:30 > 0:38:35I can't imagine being without her. I can't imagine life without her.

0:38:35 > 0:38:39I can't imagine not being able to pick up the phone and say,

0:38:39 > 0:38:41"I'll be round in ten minutes for a coffee".

0:38:41 > 0:38:44It's a fact that Alice couldn't go with them

0:38:44 > 0:38:47because her mum wouldn't contemplate it for a second.

0:38:47 > 0:38:50So, it's a fact and I think Paul would live with that fact

0:38:50 > 0:38:54until such time as it could be changed by Alice moving to them.

0:38:54 > 0:38:56Paul will find it difficult.

0:38:56 > 0:39:01I think his relationship with Alice is wonderful

0:39:01 > 0:39:05and the times he has with her when she comes here at weekends are fun.

0:39:05 > 0:39:09For the girls, Abbey and Ellie, to leave their half-sister Alice

0:39:09 > 0:39:11it will really...

0:39:11 > 0:39:14it would be a bit of a wrench for them.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17I think that Alice is going to find it difficult.

0:39:17 > 0:39:22But Alice is a very understanding girl and I think,

0:39:22 > 0:39:27in time, will appreciate the reasons behind them going,

0:39:27 > 0:39:29should they decide to go permanently.

0:39:29 > 0:39:33Jo, I hope it's everything Paul said it was

0:39:33 > 0:39:34and that you're enjoying it, too.

0:39:41 > 0:39:45- Oh, dear me.- Right, book the taxi.

0:39:45 > 0:39:46All right, babes?

0:39:48 > 0:39:50Thanks, darling.

0:39:50 > 0:39:53That was lovely, seeing everyone, weren't it?

0:39:53 > 0:39:55- Quite strange seeing them all here, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58Makes it all real.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00Oh, dear.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07Is it seeing everybody again?

0:40:14 > 0:40:18The Williams family from Leicestershire came to Adelaide,

0:40:18 > 0:40:22hoping to find a change of pace and a better standard of living.

0:40:22 > 0:40:25This is gorgeous.

0:40:25 > 0:40:29- Oh my goodness, it's lovely. - Fantastic.- It's really, really nice.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32But Paul discovered there would be a long wait

0:40:32 > 0:40:35before he got to use his skills as a police air observer.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37It's going to be a three to four year period

0:40:37 > 0:40:40before Paul even looks at a helicopter.

0:40:40 > 0:40:41It's a long time to wait.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44Watching messages from loved ones back in the UK

0:40:44 > 0:40:48has really hit home what a move to Oz would entail.

0:40:49 > 0:40:50Oh, dear me.

0:40:54 > 0:40:57As their week in Adelaide draws to a close,

0:40:57 > 0:41:01Paul and Jo have been wrestling with a heart-wrenching decision.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03What Australia has to offer is quite positive,

0:41:03 > 0:41:06but it's just whether I can leave behind what we've got at the moment.

0:41:06 > 0:41:08You make friends anywhere,

0:41:08 > 0:41:11but you always keep your true friends, don't you?

0:41:11 > 0:41:13It's the support network we've got there.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16So, that would be really hard for me to let go.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19And Paul is beginning to face the grim reality

0:41:19 > 0:41:22of whether Alice really would choose to join them.

0:41:22 > 0:41:26I think if we were to move out here and Alice decided not to come out here, I'd be gutted.

0:41:26 > 0:41:29Ultimately, she's my daughter. I love her to bits.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31She's a huge part of my life.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34We're very, very close as a father and daughter

0:41:34 > 0:41:37and I would always want it to be like that.

0:41:37 > 0:41:41And for her to make the decision, if she were to make the decision,

0:41:41 > 0:41:43in not coming out here, it'd be heart-wrenching.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49The Williams are faced with a tough dilemma.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52They've fallen in love with the homes and lifestyle,

0:41:52 > 0:41:54but is that enough?

0:41:54 > 0:41:57A vote to move would mean considerably less contact with Alice,

0:41:57 > 0:42:00who might eventually choose to join them.

0:42:00 > 0:42:04But, realistically, how long could they bear to be apart?

0:42:04 > 0:42:06It's time to vote on their future.

0:42:06 > 0:42:10We're at the end of our week in Adelaide and we've had a really good time.

0:42:10 > 0:42:12But it's also made us realise what we've got at home

0:42:12 > 0:42:16and how much things at home mean to us, whether it be relatives,

0:42:16 > 0:42:18friends, work, family.

0:42:18 > 0:42:21So, as a result of our trip, Ellie, what are we going to do?

0:42:21 > 0:42:23We're going to vote for...

0:42:25 > 0:42:27..UK!

0:42:27 > 0:42:30Now I've had the opportunity to think about it

0:42:30 > 0:42:34put things in order and make a decision in my mind, it's a relief.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37This country, I'm sure, would offer a lovely life for us and the kids,

0:42:37 > 0:42:43but without my family and friends and Alice, it's just not right.

0:42:43 > 0:42:45You're gonna miss just so much of her life,

0:42:45 > 0:42:50of her growing up, of her experiencing things with us.

0:42:50 > 0:42:53It's something that has compounded how I feel.

0:42:53 > 0:42:56The fact that you need to appreciate what you've got,

0:42:56 > 0:42:58who you've got around you

0:42:58 > 0:43:01and just enjoy everything that happens from the future onwards.

0:43:01 > 0:43:02Well, I just couldn't do it.

0:43:02 > 0:43:05It would be unbearable to think about leaving her behind.
