0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello and welcome to Wanted Down Under,

0:00:04 > 0:00:09the show that catapults a British family to the other side of the world

0:00:09 > 0:00:13to help them make the biggest decision of their life.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17Gordon and Ray Clark are considering a move to Australia.

0:00:17 > 0:00:21They think it could be the key to a better work-life balance.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25Here both of you have got to work to pay the mortgage, to live.

0:00:25 > 0:00:30And even at the weekends you still haven't got the finances to do very much.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32Ray wants a better future for the kids.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35I hope they have a better standard of living over there.

0:00:35 > 0:00:40I'm just thinking, what sort of a future is there in Britain compared to Australia?

0:00:40 > 0:00:46They moved from Lancashire to Cardiff four years ago. But could Australia be a move too far?

0:00:46 > 0:00:52I don't want to move again. I like Australia but I wanna stay in Cardiff.

0:00:52 > 0:00:57Lancashire is three and a half hours away and this is 24 hours away.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01But the sheer scale of their decision isn't lost on Gordon.

0:01:01 > 0:01:06Realistically, are we prepared to do it? Because it's not gonna be a bed of roses.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Are you gonna get the right job, the right schools?

0:01:09 > 0:01:11I think we've got a lot more information to find out this week.

0:01:11 > 0:01:16So could the Clarks make the biggest move of their lives and go

0:01:16 > 0:01:18where they're Wanted Down Under?

0:01:40 > 0:01:42The gloomy economic forecast in the UK

0:01:42 > 0:01:47makes many people see the lifestyle in Australia looking more attractive than ever.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49But is it all sun, sea and sand?

0:01:49 > 0:01:53And does emigrating make life better, happier and easier?

0:01:53 > 0:02:01Last year over 60 Brits a day moved there permanently, but what goes into making such a life-changing decision?

0:02:01 > 0:02:05We've given another 20 British families the chance to swap the UK

0:02:05 > 0:02:10for life down under but, after just one week, which way will they vote?

0:02:10 > 0:02:15Will they stay in the UK or move to Australia?

0:02:15 > 0:02:19Gordon and Ray Clark live in Cardiff with their one-year-old son, Cameron,

0:02:19 > 0:02:25and Ray's two daughters from a previous marriage - 12-year-old Gabby and Leah, who's 11.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29Ray, the girls, and her eldest son, Jacob, relocated from Lancashire

0:02:29 > 0:02:33to live with their stepdad, Gordon, four years ago.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35It was a fresh start for us.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40That was a big thing for the children, leaving their friends behind, family behind.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43They had to make new friends.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Hopefully, they'll settle in fine. They've got to want it.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49If they don't wanna go, then it probably won't happen.

0:02:49 > 0:02:55Gordon hopes his job as a sports development officer may provide their ticket out of the UK.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Hello, Sports Council for Wales, Gordon speaking.

0:02:58 > 0:03:04My job is getting more people physically active to try and reduce the burden on the health service.

0:03:04 > 0:03:10Gordon's job is not on the national wanted list, so he could only work in South Australia on a temporary visa.

0:03:10 > 0:03:17So if things go wrong I'm not sure we'll qualify for any child benefit, which adds to the cost implications.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21And it's another thing, really, to worry about.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25They're keen to find out whether the grass is greener on the other side of the world.

0:03:25 > 0:03:29But for the girls, it means moving away from their biological father.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32I definitely would miss my dad.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34If I moved to Australia,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37I probably wouldn't see him at all.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39I'd probably see him, like,

0:03:39 > 0:03:41not even once a year.

0:03:41 > 0:03:47I don't know until I've visited Australia, but I don't really wanna move that much

0:03:47 > 0:03:50because I'm gonna miss my friends and I like it in Cardiff.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58Two years ago the family were devastated when, at 11 years old,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Ray's son, Jacob, lost his battle with leukaemia.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03Jacob was my first child.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05He was a very special boy.

0:04:05 > 0:04:11Very kind. He was so full of life on the ward, the life and soul really.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13We just thought he'd recover.

0:04:13 > 0:04:18Unfortunately, he'd only been at high school a month and he relapsed.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20They started treating him again.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24He had radiotherapy...and chemo.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29And he had a bone-marrow transplant and it didn't work.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32My mum got the news that Jacob was gonna,

0:04:32 > 0:04:33like, go...

0:04:33 > 0:04:38away from us. We were all devastated.

0:04:38 > 0:04:42Then they said he had a few months to live but he didn't.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44He only lived a few days.

0:04:44 > 0:04:49The family definitely darkened a little bit when Jacob went.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52It was a bolt out the blue.

0:04:52 > 0:04:57It was just awful. And we just never thought he would die.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01Ray hopes a move down under will give the family a fresh start

0:05:01 > 0:05:05and enable her to give up work and become a full-time mum.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08I think my priorities have changed a lot.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11I've missed a period of the girls' lives.

0:05:11 > 0:05:16When we were back home from hospital it was like, gosh, you've grown up.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19After Ray being robbed of so much time with Jacob,

0:05:19 > 0:05:24having that extra time with Cameron and with the girls,

0:05:24 > 0:05:28because you just don't know what's around the corner.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31After uprooting their family once already

0:05:31 > 0:05:37and the tragedy of Jacob's death, would they have the strength to face another upheaval?

0:05:37 > 0:05:41My biggest fear is really us going out there and not settling.

0:05:41 > 0:05:48It did takes the girls quite a time to move from Lancashire down here to Cardiff, to settle in.

0:05:48 > 0:05:53When you're 24 hours away from family and friends, it's a big commitment.

0:05:53 > 0:06:00With so much at stake, the week ahead is going to be critical in helping them decide their future.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04To help them discover whether it will live up to their expectations,

0:06:04 > 0:06:07we're giving them a trial run of life for one week in Adelaide.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12We have three different lifestyles for the family to sample.

0:06:12 > 0:06:18One in the country, one in the city and one on the coast, each with an offer of a job

0:06:18 > 0:06:21and a brand-new way of life for them to enjoy on their budget.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24First, let's take a look at the country lifestyle.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Escape to the serene Adelaide country

0:06:27 > 0:06:31where you can relax and recharge among magnificent views and wildlife.

0:06:31 > 0:06:36On a salary of £30,000, living out in the country would be affordable

0:06:36 > 0:06:42with homes ranging from as little as £180,000 to £300,000.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44An exciting position is available at Prospect Council.

0:06:44 > 0:06:49The deputy CEO, Thornton Harfield, tells us more.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Hi, Gordon, and welcome to Adelaide, South Australia.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57They're looking for a project manager to turn a suburban sports ground

0:06:57 > 0:07:00into a regional recreation complex.

0:07:00 > 0:07:05Gordon, this is a great project where you'd be working with a dynamic and hard-working team.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09When you come to Adelaide, drop by.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13So that's the kind of lifestyle they can enjoy in the country.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17Let's see what's possible in the city on their budget.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Often referred to as the city within a park,

0:07:20 > 0:07:23Adelaide's completely surrounded by green space.

0:07:23 > 0:07:29There's a feast of sports you can join in within the city's parklands and you'll find it hard to be bored.

0:07:29 > 0:07:35Adelaide has many residential areas in and around the city with something to suit all tastes.

0:07:35 > 0:07:42A typical family home in an outer suburb ranges from £220,000 to £290,000.

0:07:42 > 0:07:48A salary of £35,000 might be yours working for the Adelaide Crows football team -

0:07:48 > 0:07:50Aussie Rules of course.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54Hi, Gordon. I'm Craig Burton from the Adelaide football club.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57We've got a great position here and we think it's gonna suit you.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01We're looking for someone to develop our community programme.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05We currently visit over 30,000 children a year in the schools in South Australia

0:08:05 > 0:08:08and we want to bring some of those children into the club.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12Adelaide's a great place to live and work -

0:08:12 > 0:08:17just ask our British-born ruckman, Brad Moran. Here you are, Brad.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22You won't regret it, Gordon, the best move I ever made.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25It looks like their life could shape up pretty well in the city.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29But what about a new life on the coast?

0:08:29 > 0:08:33Adelaide's coastal districts stretch out over an area of almost 18 miles

0:08:33 > 0:08:38so there's plenty of choice of beaches, harbours and water sports.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41Properties right on the sea front are expensive

0:08:41 > 0:08:47but, inland, homes sell for between £200,000 and £300,000.

0:08:47 > 0:08:53On offer is a salary of £24,000 with a sports industry body,

0:08:53 > 0:08:55as CEO Jan Sutherland explains.

0:08:55 > 0:09:01We're looking for a training manager who's innovative and dynamic and has great communication skills.

0:09:01 > 0:09:06The role encompasses training and also some lecturing in the sport and recreation industry.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09So, we had three possible options for the Clarks.

0:09:09 > 0:09:14In the country, Gordon could expect a lower income but the properties are cheaper.

0:09:14 > 0:09:19The city option comes with a higher salary but the property is more expensive.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22And the coastal option means Gordon wouldn't be earning as much

0:09:22 > 0:09:25but the lifestyle would be right up his street.

0:09:25 > 0:09:29So three very different possibilities for our family to try.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33So which one did we decide would suit them best?

0:09:34 > 0:09:39The Clark family are heading for Adelaide and the city option.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42As they touch down after their 21-hour flight,

0:09:42 > 0:09:46they're all jetlagged and tired but Gordon's still sore about something.

0:09:46 > 0:09:52We got split up because a couple of the girls got upgraded to business class.

0:09:52 > 0:09:58So Ray went up with the baby and one of the girls. They swapped, I've been in cattle class all the way.

0:09:58 > 0:10:03Why we got business class for the baby so Gordon opted me for that. That was OK. We liked it, didn't we?

0:10:03 > 0:10:05We've lost a complete day.

0:10:05 > 0:10:10Monday the 18th of August has gone because we've been stuck in the air.

0:10:10 > 0:10:14In a couple of hours, we'll probably be zonked.

0:10:18 > 0:10:22They're on the road and on their way to their base for the week -

0:10:22 > 0:10:27a typical Adelaide family home just a stone's throw from town.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Wow!

0:10:33 > 0:10:36This four-bedroom house is just the sort of property

0:10:36 > 0:10:39the Clarks would be looking for and includes the Aussie barbeque!

0:10:39 > 0:10:46- Do you know how to work these things? - Are the neighbours well insured?!

0:10:46 > 0:10:49It has masses of space for three energetic kids...

0:10:49 > 0:10:53- Do you want to go and find the bedrooms, girls?- Yeah!

0:10:53 > 0:10:54..and a travel-weary mum and dad.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03- Oh, wow. That's good. This is Cameron's bed.- Wa-hey!

0:11:03 > 0:11:07You go night-night, you go night-night.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09We've kept the best room until last.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13- What have we not seen, Leah? Oh, my goodness me.- Cool.

0:11:16 > 0:11:21- This would be my kind of living room.- Ah!- It's just amazing!

0:11:21 > 0:11:23I hope we've got films to watch.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27You're not on holiday, Gordon. There's work to be done!

0:11:27 > 0:11:29The next few days are very important.

0:11:29 > 0:11:35If we'd come on holiday, we probably wouldn't do some of the things that we need to do -

0:11:35 > 0:11:39look at house prices, what it does cost to live in Adelaide,

0:11:39 > 0:11:42look at what opportunities there are in jobs.

0:11:42 > 0:11:48So, as a starter, it's been good so far but we've got a lot more information to find out this week.

0:11:48 > 0:11:54They certainly have. If the house prices or Gordon's work plans don't pan out,

0:11:54 > 0:11:56then the whole trip could be in vain.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00The Clark family could return home to the UK disappointed.

0:12:04 > 0:12:10Back in the UK, the Clarks' family home, worth £300,000, is their castle.

0:12:10 > 0:12:15They hope a move down under could leave them almost mortgage-free,

0:12:15 > 0:12:19allowing Ray to stop work and spend more time with the kids.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25If they're to achieve this, they must stay within their budget of £200,000.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29That's just over 400,000 Australian dollars.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33Adelaide is still one of the cheapest Australian cities for property

0:12:33 > 0:12:36but they may struggle to find quite what they're looking for.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40Some difficult compromises might have to be made.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42It's all right.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44- What d'you think then?- Nice area.

0:12:44 > 0:12:50I notice there's a main road behind it which is something we'd have to think about,

0:12:50 > 0:12:52but the area itself is lovely.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55- I like the address, Happy Valley. - Yeah.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Property one is a four-bedroom bungalow on the market

0:12:58 > 0:13:05for 400,000 or £195,000, which is just under their original budget.

0:13:06 > 0:13:11- That's nice.- Oh, yeah. I love that picture on the wall.- It's nice.

0:13:11 > 0:13:16The Clarks want something with a bit more space than where they're staying.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19This is better.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22- This is bigger.- Yeah, this is good.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Nice big kitchen.

0:13:24 > 0:13:30- Big lounge.- Yeah, I love this open plan. Yeah, this kind of house.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Lots of space, that's what we need.

0:13:32 > 0:13:37I just spotted the master bedroom. Let's look in there.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40Well, Ray, you've got enough room for your clothes here.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43I've never got enough room in the wardrobe back in Cardiff.

0:13:43 > 0:13:50- Mum, this is my room.- Nice try, Leah, but you guys will have to fight it out over the other three bedrooms.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52I like this one.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55- This is definitely mine. - This is nice.- It's nice and big.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58It's still smaller than my one at home though.

0:13:58 > 0:14:04You two girls could have these as cosy rooms and then that living room could be your playroom.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09This is a nice bedroom. I'd probably pick it as my bedroom.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12- It's cosy.- Yeah.- It's my bedroom.

0:14:12 > 0:14:17I think it might be war. But the age-old struggle for the biggest room

0:14:17 > 0:14:20is a good sign - at least they can see themselves living here.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24- What's in there?- What's in this room?- It's the bathroom!

0:14:24 > 0:14:26Wow, there's three little rooms to it.

0:14:26 > 0:14:27You've got your toilet...

0:14:27 > 0:14:31Oh, right, so they're all separate rooms. That helps.

0:14:31 > 0:14:36If you want you could knock a couple of walls out and make a nice big bathroom.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39I like it like this because it's more private.

0:14:39 > 0:14:45- You don't have to wait for people to come out the bath to go to the toilet.- Yeah, that's good.

0:14:45 > 0:14:51So if they're not fighting over the bathroom, then they'll have plenty of time to relax in the garden.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54You could launch yourself into a big pool in there.

0:14:54 > 0:14:59You could have a little bar and Gordon could bring us cool drinks.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01There's one chance.

0:15:01 > 0:15:06But for Ray there's no point de-stressing in the pool when she gets stressed out by the traffic.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09You can hear the road noise.

0:15:09 > 0:15:15Size-wise, excellent, but the traffic's obviously continuous.

0:15:15 > 0:15:20This house maybe round the corner would be good.

0:15:20 > 0:15:25But it's financial issues that are in the front of Gordon's mind.

0:15:25 > 0:15:32I'm a bit concerned about the price in terms of what you're getting for the money.

0:15:32 > 0:15:38But we're looking at two other areas as well so I think it would be unfair to compare

0:15:38 > 0:15:41- until we look at the other properties.- Yeah.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45I think we've got to be open-minded and see what else there is to offer.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51In that case, let's get back on the road and check out property number two,

0:15:51 > 0:15:5520 minutes out of the town and just a short drive to the beach.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57This looks nice. I like the front of it.

0:15:57 > 0:16:02Much better. You need a chairlift to get up the drive.

0:16:02 > 0:16:08This four-bedroom property is more expensive at 430,000 or £210,000.

0:16:08 > 0:16:13The Clarks would need a small mortgage if they were to afford this house.

0:16:13 > 0:16:14This is better.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19Let's put you down, young man.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22There we go. Oh, I feel at home already.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Right, who's going through to the next room first?

0:16:25 > 0:16:27Oh, this is fantastic!

0:16:27 > 0:16:30Yes, I like this. Oh, yeah.

0:16:30 > 0:16:35This is what I think of as Australian houses.

0:16:35 > 0:16:40- Yeah. Lots of room.- Brilliant. - It's got a lot of potential.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43Yeah, I like this. I love this area.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46Property two may be a bungalow but the huge floor space

0:16:46 > 0:16:49allows for two dining areas and two living areas.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52And the bedrooms are big as well.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Nice super king bed in here.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57One thing I'd have to change is the tiles in here.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59Too old.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01They're not very nice.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04- Pink, flowery. - Yes, they would have to go.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08Cameron doesn't seem so worried about the slightly outdated bath tiles.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12- This way, Cameron. - See, he's loving this house.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15He's not moaned in this house.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17He might do when he sees the garden.

0:17:20 > 0:17:26- I love all this rockery, it's beautiful. - Oh, cracking view over that way.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29- It's quite nice up here. - Yeah, it is.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31I don't think I could look after the garden.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33It looks a bit high-maintenance.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36That's a job for when Nanny comes in the summer.

0:17:36 > 0:17:41Lucky Nanny! High-maintenance garden aside, what do the Clarks think of property number two?

0:17:41 > 0:17:46This is Australia as I was thinking before I came out.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50It's got a lot of good features. Good location,

0:17:50 > 0:17:56it's got schools nearby. You can commute into the city from here.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58And we're near the beach as well which is good.

0:17:58 > 0:18:02It would be nice to see it in the summer but we are in the winter

0:18:02 > 0:18:07and it's been raining and it's cold. It's not all sunshine.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10It certainly feels like a home.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13- It feels like a family home, more importantly.- Yeah.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16Property two seems like their ideal home

0:18:16 > 0:18:21and, being so close to the beach, it can also provide them with the Aussie lifestyle they're after.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24But they've still got one more house to check out.

0:18:24 > 0:18:30Property three is an eight-minute drive from the centre of Adelaide.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34It has three bedrooms and a great big garden.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37It's priced at 480,000 or £235,000

0:18:37 > 0:18:43which is £65,000 over their dream of life mortgage-free.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47All these figures are just too much for Cameron and he goes for a lie down.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50I'm going to put the baby down.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52Time to go to sleep.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55Come on, let's see what else we can find.

0:18:55 > 0:19:02- The main room.- It's quite a small living space, isn't it?- Is it? It's a nice big kitchen as well.

0:19:02 > 0:19:08It's a bit hidden away as well. Big pantry again.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19Aww.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25Shall we go and find the bedrooms?

0:19:25 > 0:19:29Who's going to get the best room in this house?

0:19:29 > 0:19:31This is sweet.

0:19:31 > 0:19:38I like it, I'd probably have it as my bedroom, if it was the best one. Well, it is, so far, the best one.

0:19:38 > 0:19:44Don't bagsy the room yet, Leah, you might find you like bedroom two, and it's pink.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46The kids' rooms are well done out.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48Yeah, they're lovely.

0:19:48 > 0:19:54I don't like the window. The window's straight onto a fence and a caravan.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57I don't like that bit.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00It could be a toss of a coin again.

0:20:00 > 0:20:04There isn't a fourth bedroom so the girls would have to share.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08While Cameron sleeps, there's just time to take a peek at the garden.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11- A nice back garden for Cameron. - Yeah.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13But...

0:20:13 > 0:20:18- Industry.- It's blocking the sun for the light, isn't it?

0:20:18 > 0:20:21- I don't like this one at all. - We need four bedrooms at least.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24We probably will have a lot of visitors.

0:20:24 > 0:20:31Property in Adelaide has gone up... well, in Australia, period, it has gone up quite a lot

0:20:31 > 0:20:35from previous programmes I've seen. People used to say

0:20:35 > 0:20:43you get so much for your money in Australia but not the case, I don't think, now. They've caught us up.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47It's not gonna be as simple or straightforward as we thought.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49The dream was to get rid of the mortgage completely.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51I don't think that's gonna be possible.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55There's definitely gonna be a mortgage but hopefully not as big.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59So we need to see if the wages reflect the rest of it.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02No pressure then!

0:21:02 > 0:21:06The Clarks have seen three properties.

0:21:06 > 0:21:12House one had plenty of space inside but the noise of the traffic outside really put them off.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16They all loved the second house but Nanny would really have her work cut out in the garden.

0:21:16 > 0:21:21And property three proved that city living comes at a price,

0:21:21 > 0:21:25and being so close to an industrial park didn't go down well at all.

0:21:25 > 0:21:30With all that in mind, which way will they vote on property, UK or Australia?

0:21:30 > 0:21:33I really want to vote...

0:21:33 > 0:21:36sort of level, neither for or against.

0:21:36 > 0:21:41But we do have to make a collective decision so I think we're gonna have a go.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43And our vote is...

0:21:44 > 0:21:49- Australia.- Great Britain. - Great Britain.- Australia.

0:21:49 > 0:21:54It's a 50:50 split but does it mean a change of heart for Leah?

0:21:57 > 0:22:03So some disagreement on potential properties in Adelaide and it's clear

0:22:03 > 0:22:07the onus is on Gordon to find work to finance a new lifestyle.

0:22:09 > 0:22:16Back home Gordon works as a sports development officer, where he earns £38,000 a year.

0:22:16 > 0:22:23He loves the work he does in the UK so the job here would have to be special to convince him to move.

0:22:26 > 0:22:32It's the big work day with the Australian Rules football team. It should be interesting.

0:22:32 > 0:22:39I know nothing about that but sports development, recreation development is the same whichever sport.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42If the Clarks are even to consider making this move, Gordon's salary

0:22:42 > 0:22:45here would have to be high enough to support the whole family.

0:22:45 > 0:22:52I think if the salary is not at the level that we're looking for, then that might be the final nail.

0:22:52 > 0:22:58I think it might well be, no, we're gonna have to stick it out at home with both of us working,

0:22:58 > 0:23:03or we have to have a complete rethink about is it possible, really, for Ray to stay off work?

0:23:03 > 0:23:07I think certainly if it's not at the level that we're looking for

0:23:07 > 0:23:11then I think that probably is the end of the Australian dream.

0:23:11 > 0:23:15Even if today's job pays enough on a temporary visa they'd be unable

0:23:15 > 0:23:19to claim any state benefit so the pressure's really on.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21Meanwhile, across town, Ray and the kids are checking out

0:23:21 > 0:23:27how far their pennies will stretch at the local market and how they'd cope on one income.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Nice pasta. Look at all these meats here.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33Try a piece, see what you think.

0:23:33 > 0:23:38Melting cheddar, so that's like cooking cheddar.

0:23:38 > 0:23:43- I like it.- I don't think anything's particularly cheap

0:23:43 > 0:23:46looking at some of the prices.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48I think it's the same.

0:23:48 > 0:23:52From the various bits of shopping we've done some things are actually more expensive.

0:23:52 > 0:23:56I noticed nappies seem to be more expensive. Chocolate, double!

0:23:56 > 0:24:01It's really expensive. Maybe it's because of the imports.

0:24:01 > 0:24:08Everything else, I think, is on a par. I think people moving

0:24:08 > 0:24:11out here are gonna be shocked at how much everything costs.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13If you're emigrating out here I think you need the same salary

0:24:13 > 0:24:19as what you've got in Britain because your money isn't going to spread any further.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22So it's essential that Gordon can achieve a good salary.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25He's heading for the AAMI Stadium in the centre of the city,

0:24:25 > 0:24:28home to Aussie Rules football team the Adelaide Crows.

0:24:28 > 0:24:34We've arranged for him to meet human-resources manager and ex-player, Craig Burton

0:24:34 > 0:24:38to find out more about the exciting new job they're offering.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40- Gordon.- Hi.- How you going? - Great to meet you, Craig.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42Welcome to the Adelaide footy club.

0:24:42 > 0:24:47Thanks very much. It's not a sport we do much in the UK so I'm interested to find out more.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51The Crows are one of the premier clubs in Australia.

0:24:51 > 0:24:57They use this position of influence to educate up to 30,000 children a year on a variety of life skills.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00Part of Gordon's role would be in schools on the frontline.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05What would be the job, in a nutshell, really?

0:25:05 > 0:25:07In a nutshell, it's using our brand,

0:25:07 > 0:25:12the Adelaide football club or the Crows, to go into schools and try

0:25:12 > 0:25:16and deliver some really good messages, whether that be better

0:25:16 > 0:25:22ways of eating, better ways to exercise, better ways to teach kids how to make the right decisions.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26So it's adding to an already good education system using

0:25:26 > 0:25:30the Adelaide football club brand to deliver the programme.

0:25:30 > 0:25:35Your role would be co-ordinating that whole thing.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38This is an area used quite a bit in the football club.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41Part of your role will be working with the players.

0:25:41 > 0:25:46A lot of our younger players, our first-year players who may not play every week, they'll do a lot

0:25:46 > 0:25:49of the community work. The senior players, our top echelon,

0:25:49 > 0:25:53if you want to compare one of our players to an English Premier League

0:25:53 > 0:25:57senior player, say a David Beckham or something like that,

0:25:57 > 0:26:02those guys still have a set amount of appearances they have to do in the community.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05- How about we go outside and have a look at the oval?- OK, yeah. Great.

0:26:05 > 0:26:10Back at Central Market, Ray's worried about how Gordon's getting on at work.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13I think Gordon's not sure what to expect today.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17He's hoping that the pay would be similar to Britain.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20I think he'd be disappointed if it's half the pay, or even lower.

0:26:20 > 0:26:26- He's got a lot of apprehensions about it.- She's all too aware that a good income

0:26:26 > 0:26:30means she could be a stay-at-home mum.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32I just want to spend time with Cameron.

0:26:32 > 0:26:37I know how quickly they grow up, and life can be short,

0:26:37 > 0:26:40as we know with losing our precious Jacob.

0:26:42 > 0:26:47I don't want the rushing here, rushing there, the pressure of life.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49I think in Britain we've got it wrong.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52I think it's important to be at home for your children.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55I think family is the most important thing.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58At the stadium, Craig's decided that since Gordon doesn't have

0:26:58 > 0:27:01Aussie Rules in his blood, it needs putting there.

0:27:01 > 0:27:05A knowledge of the game would be essential for this job.

0:27:05 > 0:27:06Blooming heck! It's a lot bigger than I thought.

0:27:06 > 0:27:10A perfect excuse for a bit of a kick around.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13I tell you what, how about we go out in the oval and I'll show you how to kick?

0:27:13 > 0:27:15- OK.- Come on, let's go.

0:27:19 > 0:27:20There you go.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23- Easy.- Excellent.- Do you want to try?

0:27:23 > 0:27:25As long as they edit that bit into my kick!

0:27:25 > 0:27:27That would be terribly unethical, Gordon.

0:27:27 > 0:27:33You'll have to show Craig you've got the skills to pay the bills if you want this job.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35- Like this?- That look pretty good. - And just have a go, yeah?

0:27:35 > 0:27:37- Aim for the big sticks, watch the ball.- OK!

0:27:42 > 0:27:44We'll sign him up, I think.

0:27:44 > 0:27:45That guy's all right.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47- That's not a bad kick.- Maybe I'll get a game on Sunday.

0:27:47 > 0:27:51- You never know, kicking like that. Well, done.- Thoroughly enjoyed it.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53It's not that difficult, this.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56- Easy game, isn't it? - Well, maybe not.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58I'll go in the stands next time before I come and play.

0:27:58 > 0:28:02I didn't want to say that, Gordon, but I think you'd be better off behind the desk.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08What sort of salary package is on offer for a role like this?

0:28:08 > 0:28:12Probably in that 70,000 sort of range.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15We're also looking at providing a vehicle which will add to the salary.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17That certainly is a good range I think.

0:28:17 > 0:28:22So Gordon would be paid a salary equivalent of £35,000 but the

0:28:22 > 0:28:26company car takes his earnings above what he gets in the UK.

0:28:26 > 0:28:30I think it went really well. I think Gordon's skills and everything about

0:28:30 > 0:28:34him, his personality, was really good. Oh, look at that!

0:28:34 > 0:28:36We have a programme that we're trying to establish and

0:28:36 > 0:28:40Gordon so far, I haven't spoken to anyone else, fits the bill.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42This is easy, can I have a job?

0:28:42 > 0:28:45The package is a similar level to what I'm on now,

0:28:45 > 0:28:51and the car makes it very worthwhile as well because there will be lot of travelling, etc.

0:28:51 > 0:28:57So with a good salary then we can get rid of the mortgage, just about.

0:28:57 > 0:29:01Yeah, the options are wide open now.

0:29:01 > 0:29:07Sounds good, but there's still the all-important vote on work. Will it be the UK or Australia?

0:29:07 > 0:29:10Well, it's been a great day here with the Adelaide Crows.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13Not only have I learnt about a potential job opportunity,

0:29:13 > 0:29:17I've also learned a bit of Aussie Rules football which I've never done before.

0:29:17 > 0:29:21The job really is something that I think I would enjoy doing

0:29:21 > 0:29:26and with that in mind my vote is going to be...

0:29:26 > 0:29:28Australia!

0:29:33 > 0:29:37Many Brits who visit Australia are astonished by

0:29:37 > 0:29:41the sheer size of the country compared to the little-old UK.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44So here's some advice if you decide to travel down under.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47Australia's a vast and massive land.

0:29:47 > 0:29:52You could actually put the UK in it 32 times and Europe in it twice.

0:29:52 > 0:29:57The longest internal flight in the world is in Austria from Perth to Brisbane or vice versa.

0:29:57 > 0:29:59It's over 5½ hours' flying time.

0:29:59 > 0:30:02From the UK you could fly for four hours and be in Egypt.

0:30:02 > 0:30:10So, with a total land area of almost three million square miles, what's the best way to get from A to B?

0:30:10 > 0:30:13It's very important to plan your itinerary properly.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16You can't quickly pop over to Sydney then pop to Alice Springs

0:30:16 > 0:30:21and Ayers Rock and then go to see the Great Barrier Reef. You can't do that in a day, or even in a week.

0:30:21 > 0:30:25There's nothing like a little bit of local knowledge to help you on your way.

0:30:25 > 0:30:27What do the Aussies themselves recommend you see?

0:30:27 > 0:30:31Ayers Rock because it is truly Australian and the

0:30:31 > 0:30:35local people there, the indigenous Aboriginals, are fantastic to meet.

0:30:35 > 0:30:39I'd go up to the Gold Coast around Queensland, Cairns. Western Australia's great.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42Places like Kakadu National Park just blow you away.

0:30:42 > 0:30:47The Whitsunday Islands, which is lovely to fly to and then do a boat cruise.

0:30:47 > 0:30:52And if you do plan to travel around Australia please leave your Aussie stereotypes at home.

0:30:52 > 0:30:57People think we wear cork hats and walk around like Crocodile Dundee, it's not the case.

0:30:57 > 0:31:01There are some people like that but they are few and far between.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07Gordon and Ray Clark from Cardiff are convinced that their life would

0:31:07 > 0:31:09improve greatly if they moved to Australia.

0:31:09 > 0:31:15I'm hoping it's a better lifestyle and a better future for the children, and

0:31:15 > 0:31:18so it's a case of let's have a look before it's too late.

0:31:18 > 0:31:23Gordon's confident he could find a job he loves as much as his occupation at home.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26'I must admit I was really impressed actually.'

0:31:26 > 0:31:30I think if there was an opportunity here then I'd definitely have a look at it.

0:31:32 > 0:31:38But surviving on a single salary may mean that life in Oz isn't all it's cracked up to be.

0:31:38 > 0:31:43I think people moving out here are gonna be shocked at how much everything costs.

0:31:43 > 0:31:48If you're emigrating out here I think you need the same salary as what you've got in Britain

0:31:48 > 0:31:51because your money isn't going to spread any further.

0:31:51 > 0:31:57And having already been uprooted four years ago when they moved to Cardiff, can Gabby and Leah be persuaded to

0:31:57 > 0:32:00relocate again, this time to the other side of the world?

0:32:00 > 0:32:02I don't wanna move again,

0:32:02 > 0:32:07and I can't really keep in touch with my dad because we'd be half way around the world.

0:32:07 > 0:32:13I like Australia but I think I wanna stay in Cardiff.

0:32:13 > 0:32:18Without the girls on board Gordon and Ray's dream may never become reality.

0:32:24 > 0:32:29Day five of the Clarks' Australia trial week and as they reflect on the life-changing decision

0:32:29 > 0:32:32they've got to make Gordon and Ray realise

0:32:32 > 0:32:37they've got some convincing to do with animal-loving Leah and Gabby.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41What's that?

0:32:41 > 0:32:45You're just beautiful.

0:32:45 > 0:32:50They're kangaroos, they go bouncy.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53Oh, my God, I don't like the emus.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55Mr Emu.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57Look at this one.

0:32:57 > 0:33:01Of all the Aussie animals, there's one they really want to meet.

0:33:01 > 0:33:05- He's so gorgeous.- He's so soft.

0:33:05 > 0:33:09Would you like to have a hold?

0:33:09 > 0:33:12- Absolutely.- He's coming across.

0:33:16 > 0:33:20- There we are.- He is just gorgeous.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26Back in the UK, Ray and Gordon often plan trips

0:33:26 > 0:33:30based on some of Jacob's favourite activities to help remember him by.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33He would have loved it, yeah.

0:33:33 > 0:33:37He would probably be trying to box the kangaroos and stuff!

0:33:37 > 0:33:41- He'd love it. - He didn't see all this different wildlife that we're seeing.

0:33:41 > 0:33:48He did see it in books and films but not in the person.

0:33:48 > 0:33:52It would be really fun with him there.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54Yeah, the wildlife was just Jacob.

0:33:54 > 0:33:59It was just him. He just adored

0:33:59 > 0:34:03nature, he cared about the planet.

0:34:03 > 0:34:09Coming to Australia was a big thing about the wildlife because we was gonna come with Jacob last year.

0:34:09 > 0:34:11His dream was to work with wildlife.

0:34:11 > 0:34:16So it is a big thing and he would have loved all this.

0:34:16 > 0:34:21It's great to see that and it's

0:34:21 > 0:34:25a way of remembering Jacob.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28We're going to go back home and we're going to be talking about

0:34:28 > 0:34:33holding the koala, feeding the kangaroos, Leah running away from the emus.

0:34:33 > 0:34:37It will just be fun and we don't have enough of that.

0:34:40 > 0:34:44Leah has had plenty of time to reflect on thoughts of leaving the UK behind.

0:34:44 > 0:34:49I like Australia but I think I want to stay in Cardiff.

0:34:49 > 0:34:51I love it

0:34:51 > 0:34:54but I've settled in in Cardiff.

0:34:54 > 0:34:57I could probably settle in Australia

0:34:57 > 0:34:59but I don't want to move again

0:34:59 > 0:35:03and I can't keep in touch with my dad because

0:35:03 > 0:35:05I'd live half way round the world from him.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08Would you like to have a hold? Pop your hands out.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10Just put your hands like that.

0:35:10 > 0:35:14Just let him climb over wherever he wants.

0:35:14 > 0:35:18I'm really, really, really enjoying it.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20It's probably the best day.

0:35:20 > 0:35:24Oh, he's slithering all the way down me.

0:35:24 > 0:35:30I really would miss my dad and my friends, my best friend especially.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32I'd have trouble with them.

0:35:32 > 0:35:38I suppose we could e-mail each other but it's hard with the time differences and everything.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41It's OK but I can't see myself living here.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43The Clarks' exploration into the Aussie lifestyle has been

0:35:43 > 0:35:49important for all the family but the time to reflect has brought doubts to the surface.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52How will they vote based on their day?

0:35:52 > 0:35:57Is the lifestyle better in the UK or in Australia?

0:35:57 > 0:36:01The last few days in Australia have been pretty impressive.

0:36:01 > 0:36:05There's so much to do and see and I think overall...

0:36:05 > 0:36:08Our vote is...

0:36:08 > 0:36:10Australia.

0:36:14 > 0:36:17All week the Clark family has been undecided

0:36:17 > 0:36:19whether or not to move down under.

0:36:19 > 0:36:24Will hearing message from friends and family help them make their final decision?

0:36:24 > 0:36:28We've compiled some thoughts from loved ones back home.

0:36:28 > 0:36:31Up first are family friends the Tanners.

0:36:31 > 0:36:36We've a very close relationship with the Clarks and we're like one big happy family really.

0:36:36 > 0:36:40When they moved in, Gordon was by his car one day

0:36:40 > 0:36:45and I said, "If there's any parcels you'd like me to take out."

0:36:45 > 0:36:51He said, "Does that include babysitting?" So we've become very close.

0:36:51 > 0:36:56Just letting you know if you go I will be upset but it's up to you

0:36:56 > 0:36:58because I'm your best friend

0:36:58 > 0:37:02- but really miss you. - Gabby is very sweet,

0:37:02 > 0:37:07intelligent, and very bright. She's already mastered the Welsh language

0:37:07 > 0:37:09and she won't have a problem with the Aussie twang out there I'm sure.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12Leah's more of a robust tomboy -

0:37:12 > 0:37:18the one who will want to go outback and have a look at the wildlife.

0:37:18 > 0:37:20Gordon's strengths are

0:37:20 > 0:37:25he's very organised, he likes to be in control and he's very dedicated

0:37:25 > 0:37:29to his work and to his family life.

0:37:29 > 0:37:34When our family were introduced to Jacob's condition,

0:37:34 > 0:37:38Gordon was again tested.

0:37:38 > 0:37:43It must have taken its toll on Gordon's nerve and goodwill.

0:37:43 > 0:37:48But that man deserves a medal for everything that he's been challenged with.

0:37:48 > 0:37:50She's a wonderful mother

0:37:50 > 0:37:55and has coped tremendously over her terrible loss.

0:37:55 > 0:37:57And she's a...

0:37:57 > 0:37:59fine, fine young woman.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03She's such a fighter and a survivor

0:38:03 > 0:38:09that you don't really know what she's going through because she takes everything in her stride.

0:38:09 > 0:38:13With her move to Australia, she's not necessarily putting away

0:38:13 > 0:38:15her memories of Jacob,

0:38:15 > 0:38:21it's more to do with her moving on and taking herself and her family

0:38:21 > 0:38:24forward into a new environment.

0:38:24 > 0:38:28But Jacob will be there wherever she goes.

0:38:29 > 0:38:32I don't want her to go.

0:38:32 > 0:38:37I'm scared a bit because I don't want to lose her because...

0:38:40 > 0:38:45We would miss them tremendously because we would miss seeing them every day.

0:38:45 > 0:38:49We'd miss the family life we all have together.

0:38:50 > 0:38:54We can't really imagine it, to be honest.

0:38:59 > 0:39:01Well, Lauren is going to miss you.

0:39:03 > 0:39:05I was filling up for you.

0:39:07 > 0:39:11It was nice to hear what they had to say and the nice things and it

0:39:11 > 0:39:13was slightly more emotional than I thought it would be.

0:39:13 > 0:39:16You looked like you were going to cry.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19It was quite emotional actually.

0:39:19 > 0:39:23It was when Uncle David said you deserve a medal it looked like you were

0:39:23 > 0:39:25going to start blubbering.

0:39:25 > 0:39:28Were you emotional, Leah?

0:39:28 > 0:39:31It was nice to hear them saying that they would miss us and that.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33It was upsetting,

0:39:33 > 0:39:38because if we did move here to Australia

0:39:38 > 0:39:41we would have to leave them all behind.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44We wouldn't be able to see them as often.

0:39:44 > 0:39:46Like with my dad,

0:39:48 > 0:39:53we can drive down to see him and I've got lots of friends there

0:39:53 > 0:39:56and I wouldn't want to leave any of them.

0:39:56 > 0:39:58Now I want to stay in Cardiff.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01I was all for coming here at first, though.

0:40:01 > 0:40:06I don't want to go either. If we did move and it was like my last week,

0:40:06 > 0:40:08that would be really upsetting.

0:40:08 > 0:40:11I think we have to do what's right for our family.

0:40:11 > 0:40:13It's no foregone conclusion yet

0:40:13 > 0:40:18in terms of whether it is Australia or the UK.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21We've got a lot of thinking and decisions still to make

0:40:21 > 0:40:25but at least now we can make them on an informed basis.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30The week in Adelaide has been mixed for the Clarks with the

0:40:30 > 0:40:35girls reluctant to uproot and leave their school and friends behind.

0:40:35 > 0:40:40For Gordon and Ray though, Australia seems to offer the new start they so crave.

0:40:44 > 0:40:46It's the Clarks' last day in Adelaide,

0:40:46 > 0:40:50and they've had a tough week test-driving what life could be like down-under.

0:40:50 > 0:40:55Their dream of living mortgage free and the cost of living in Oz was a real wake-up call.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58It looks like property in Adelaide has gone up.

0:40:58 > 0:41:02People always used to say you get so much for your money in Australia

0:41:02 > 0:41:07but it's not the case any more - I think they've caught us up.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10Against all expectations, Gordon found a job he liked.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13Before I came I wasn't sure about work and with the football team,

0:41:13 > 0:41:16I knew nothing about it. But they were really welcoming.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19I thoroughly enjoyed it.

0:41:19 > 0:41:24The atmosphere added to the buzz I got when I left on that day.

0:41:24 > 0:41:31But with friends and family so far away, the Clarks are facing a heart-wrenching decision.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34I think we have to do what's right for our family.

0:41:34 > 0:41:40It's no foregone conclusion yet in terms of whether it's Australia or the UK.

0:41:40 > 0:41:46And their week down under has only reinforced for the girls what a huge step it would be for them.

0:41:46 > 0:41:52I really would miss my dad and my friends, my best friend especially.

0:41:52 > 0:41:57There's no doubt about it, Gabby's - "No, I'm not going."

0:41:57 > 0:42:01When I saw the wildlife park I was like, yeah, we're definitely staying in Australia,

0:42:04 > 0:42:08but I think I want to stay in Cardiff.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11After a roller-coaster week of string emotions

0:42:11 > 0:42:14it looks like the Clarks could be split on their decision to move.

0:42:14 > 0:42:17They are voting for their future, but where will it be?

0:42:17 > 0:42:22If the girls vote 'no' here, Ray and Gordon's hopes could be in tatters.

0:42:22 > 0:42:26It's our final day today. We've had a bit of an up-and-down week.

0:42:26 > 0:42:29We've looked at the lifestyles, we've looked at property, we've

0:42:29 > 0:42:31looked at employment opportunities

0:42:31 > 0:42:38and I think we've had some very good highs and some very low lows.

0:42:38 > 0:42:42But overall I think our vote is going to be...

0:42:45 > 0:42:47Australia.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50Wow, that's a turn-up for the books.

0:42:50 > 0:42:52You vote for Australia too!

0:42:52 > 0:42:56Gabby and Leah weren't convinced at first they would fit

0:42:56 > 0:43:01into a new life in Australia but in the end they saw

0:43:01 > 0:43:07the whole family could have a happy future if the Clarks were to move where they're wanted down under.

0:43:07 > 0:43:12Join us next time and find out what happens when another British family

0:43:12 > 0:43:15have to decide whether to go where they're wanted down under.
