0:00:02 > 0:00:06Hello and welcome to Wanted Down Under, the show that catapults a British family

0:00:06 > 0:00:09right across to the other side of the world

0:00:09 > 0:00:12to help them make the biggest decision of their life.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Anthony and Alex Evans and nine-year-old twins

0:00:15 > 0:00:18Amy and Rebecca are dreaming of a new start in Australia.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22Their lifestyle in rural Shropshire is seriously wearing them down.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26We feel that we're working too much in this country to make ends meet

0:00:26 > 0:00:31and we think that perhaps over there life might be a little bit better.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35Mum and Dad are music teachers with an impossible working schedule.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37My work is out of the local area.

0:00:37 > 0:00:43Anthony mismatches several part-time jobs and we both teach privately from home in the evenings as well.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47Would teaching down under really be any easier?

0:00:47 > 0:00:51I think the biggest fear of the move to Australia would be financial,

0:00:51 > 0:00:55to make sure we could find enough work to

0:00:55 > 0:00:56be able to afford to live.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00And could they bear to leave Anthony's son and daughter behind?

0:01:00 > 0:01:04If Aaron said to me "don't go", I'd have to think about it,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07but if Katie asked me not to go, I don't think I'd go.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10So might the dream of a simpler life in Australia prove to be

0:01:10 > 0:01:14an illusion, or will they go where they're Wanted Down Under?

0:01:34 > 0:01:39In the current economic downturn, Australia's a strong draw.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Last year, over 60 Brits a day made the move,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45grabbing the chance to transfer their skills,

0:01:45 > 0:01:49but had they really thought through their big decision to emigrate?

0:01:49 > 0:01:52We've pushed 20 British families to breaking point

0:01:52 > 0:01:55as they find out about real life down under

0:01:55 > 0:01:59and, after just one week, they'll have to vote, one way or the other.

0:01:59 > 0:02:04Will they stay in the UK or will they move to Australia?

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Alex and Anthony Evans are passionate about music.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11They met through a band and whether playing, teaching or conducting,

0:02:11 > 0:02:12their life depends on it.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15We both enjoy every area of music.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19It's just too strong really to describe sometimes.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Neither of us can really function without music.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25But their workloads are exhausting.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30Alex commutes hundreds of miles each week teaching woodwind in schools across Wales.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34My job itself entails travelling from one school to another,

0:02:34 > 0:02:38but because I teach in a county which isn't the county we live in,

0:02:38 > 0:02:43I have a long journey time out there and a long journey time back at the end of the day,

0:02:43 > 0:02:47so whereas ideally working in schools should fit with the children's schooling hours,

0:02:47 > 0:02:51with my additional travelling it means I leave before they go to school

0:02:51 > 0:02:52and get back after they do.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Anthony teaches in a school, gives private lessons from home

0:02:55 > 0:03:00in the evenings and works as a Band Master for the Territorial Army.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02My work with the TA takes me away on weekends,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04because it's like weekend soldiering,

0:03:04 > 0:03:08and we do a lot of our engagements with the band on weekends.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10That has got a great impact on family life.

0:03:10 > 0:03:15We don't get a chance to do things together, not much at all, really.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17With such a demanding schedule

0:03:17 > 0:03:21there's little time or energy left over for twins Amy and Rebecca.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25We're kind of getting to the stage that by the time the weekend comes,

0:03:25 > 0:03:30you don't feel like doing any family-orientated activities because you want to collapse in a heap!

0:03:30 > 0:03:34The Evans desperately need to simply their lives and, as the main visa applicant,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Alex is optimistic that Australia is the answer.

0:03:37 > 0:03:43Having looked at the jobs market over there, there seems to be far more job opportunities for music teachers,

0:03:43 > 0:03:48particularly instrumental music teachers, in Australia than there currently are in England.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51But a move down under would be an emotional wrench.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54The family would be forced to give up their cherished home.

0:03:54 > 0:03:59Our house is fantastic, it's quirky, it's different.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03It's stuck down a dirt track in the middle of nowhere that SatNav often doesn't find,

0:04:03 > 0:04:04which we both love,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07and we'd love to be able to pick it up and take it with us.

0:04:07 > 0:04:13And Anthony is facing the daunting prospect of leaving his two grown-up children, Aaron and Katie, behind.

0:04:13 > 0:04:18I've got a lump in my throat at times thinking should I leave them behind,

0:04:18 > 0:04:24but I think what's...what's best for me is important as well, you know.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27My happiness and my life with Alex is important.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Katie is definitely...

0:04:29 > 0:04:32I think she's probably gonna be the hardest person to miss.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36Um, Katie has a big influence on all of us.

0:04:36 > 0:04:41The girls absolutely idolise her and I think I have been incredibly

0:04:41 > 0:04:45lucky that as well as a step-daughter I've gained a very close friend,

0:04:45 > 0:04:49and I think she'll be the hardest to miss more than anyone else.

0:04:49 > 0:04:54Are the Evans ready for the sacrifices a move down under would demand?

0:04:54 > 0:04:58To help them decide, we've offered them a life-changing opportunity...

0:04:58 > 0:05:01a trip to Melbourne on the South Coast of Australia.

0:05:01 > 0:05:06We found three different lifestyles for our family to sample...

0:05:06 > 0:05:10one in the country, one in the city and one on the coast;

0:05:10 > 0:05:16each one with the offer of a job and a brand new lifestyle for them to enjoy on their budget.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20First, let's take a look at the country lifestyle.

0:05:22 > 0:05:23The outer suburbs of Melbourne

0:05:23 > 0:05:27are a great place to relax in peace and quiet.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32Picturesque towns with quaint shops and cafes are only a short drive away.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Chilling out in suburbia is much cheaper than city life

0:05:37 > 0:05:42and a family home would set you back in the region of £200,000.

0:05:42 > 0:05:48Alan Capello is the director of a music teaching agency and he's on the look-out for new staff.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52Part-time work here would pay around £240 per week.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55The students usually learn in small groups,

0:05:55 > 0:05:58where they support each other, learning within a social environment.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00In this area we've got national parks,

0:06:00 > 0:06:03the plants and wildlife are just gorgeous;

0:06:03 > 0:06:05it's just fantastic for the family to be there.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07I hope you like what you've seen.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10We are looking for part-time teachers and we would love to hear from you.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14So that was the kind of lifestyle they could enjoy in the country.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18Let's take a look at what's possible in the city on their budget.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23Melbourne is Australia's capital of culture

0:06:23 > 0:06:27and it's host to music, food and arts from all around the world

0:06:27 > 0:06:33and, if you're a fan of cosmopolitan cafe life, this is the city for you.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36City properties don't come cheap.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41A small family home would set you back around £300,000.

0:06:41 > 0:06:48With a part-time teaching job at this urban music school, you could earn around £150 per week.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50Richard Bodinna is the co-owner.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52We teach all different instruments.

0:06:52 > 0:06:59We have about 20 teachers teaching 270 students coming through the school each week.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03Here in Bucks Hill, we're really close to all of the music of Melbourne.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Everywhere you turn there's music.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09Alex, your ability as a flute, saxophone and clarinet teacher would

0:07:09 > 0:07:14be invaluable here at White Horse Music, so please come down under.

0:07:15 > 0:07:20It looks like their lifestyle could shape up pretty well in the city,

0:07:20 > 0:07:23but what about a new life on the coast?

0:07:28 > 0:07:32The beaches of Melbourne are a great place for the family,

0:07:32 > 0:07:38with bags of open space and entertainment on offer, you kids are just going to love it.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42But with the promise of such a great lifestyle, coastal properties

0:07:42 > 0:07:48don't come cheap and family homes cost upwards of £250,000.

0:07:48 > 0:07:53Justin Forster is the boss of a local music agency which supplies

0:07:53 > 0:07:55teachers to schools all over Melbourne.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57A job here would pay 40 -

0:07:57 > 0:08:00around £20 - per hour.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03We take a very fun and lively approach with our students

0:08:03 > 0:08:08and it's really important to me that each student looks at music as a way of life.

0:08:08 > 0:08:14We've got so many fantastic things to see and do down here and the beaches and bays are amazing.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18Alex, at the moment I'm looking for a woodwind/keyboard teacher.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22When you come to Australia, please look me up, that would be great.

0:08:22 > 0:08:23I'm really keen to meet you.

0:08:23 > 0:08:29So there were three possible lifestyle options for the Evans family to try out in Melbourne:

0:08:29 > 0:08:32in the country where a relaxing lifestyle, cheaper property

0:08:32 > 0:08:36and a job at Alan Capello's music agency awaits them;

0:08:36 > 0:08:39in the city where a buzzing art scene and teaching work

0:08:39 > 0:08:42at Richard Bodinna's music school is up for grabs,

0:08:42 > 0:08:45and on the coast where a carefree beach life and a job

0:08:45 > 0:08:49at Justin Forster's agency is on offer.

0:08:49 > 0:08:57So, three very different possibilities for our family to try, so which one suited them best?

0:08:57 > 0:09:01The Evans are trying out the coast option for their week down under.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05Would life on the other side of the world really be that much simpler?

0:09:07 > 0:09:10An uncomfortable 10,000-mile journey to Melbourne

0:09:10 > 0:09:12gets them off to a shaky start.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14The flight was a bit bumpy.

0:09:14 > 0:09:19There was a lot of turbulence, especially on the second leg, it was quite rough in places.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22It just seems to have been a long time coming to getting out here,

0:09:22 > 0:09:24and it's really nice to have arrived.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28Having made it this far, the family are feeling optimistic.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32The week ahead's going to be really exciting. I'm really looking forward to it.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36The girls were in cheers as soon as we actually hit Australian soil,

0:09:36 > 0:09:40saying, "Yes, we've arrived in Melbourne...this is it!"

0:09:40 > 0:09:45They're anxious to see if Australia is the solution to their complicated way of life.

0:09:45 > 0:09:50Situated in the south-east, Melbourne is the cultural capital of Australia.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53It's packed with theatres, galleries and museums,

0:09:53 > 0:09:57has a celebrated programme of arts events and a buzzing music scene.

0:09:57 > 0:10:03With a population of 3.8 million, it's the second largest city in Australia after Sydney.

0:10:03 > 0:10:08For their trial week, the family are staying in a three-bedroom house in Sandringham,

0:10:08 > 0:10:11a smart beach-side suburb just 20 minutes from the city centre.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15- ..So that you can just have a look. - Wow!- Go on, then!

0:10:15 > 0:10:19It's the family's first encounter with a modern Australian house.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Given their quirky house in the UK, what will they make of it?

0:10:22 > 0:10:26It looks a bit small from outside, doesn't it, but it is quite spacious inside.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28Wow!

0:10:28 > 0:10:30It's gorgeous, isn't it?

0:10:30 > 0:10:32- Very big.- We should go for something like this.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34We're staying here, aren't we!

0:10:34 > 0:10:37So far, so good. How about the kitchen?

0:10:37 > 0:10:41- It could be Daddy's kitchen probably. - Yeah. Let's check this cooker out.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43That's Daddy's kitchen, yes.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45- Daddy, they've got loads of space. - Loads of space, yeah.

0:10:45 > 0:10:50This property has a back garden, but it's a fraction of the size of their UK one.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- Very small.- That's very small.

0:10:53 > 0:10:54Very cosy though, isn't it?

0:10:54 > 0:11:00They're not too impressed until Anthony spots the ultimate Aussie accessory...

0:11:00 > 0:11:02There's a barbie!

0:11:02 > 0:11:04That's you happy as well!

0:11:04 > 0:11:05Yes! Big old barbie!

0:11:07 > 0:11:09There's the gas as well.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13Witness the male of the species bonding with new equipment!

0:11:13 > 0:11:16- Jolly good!- It doesn't matter what the weather does.

0:11:18 > 0:11:24Back in the house it's time to work out who will sleep where. We're entering dangerous territory!

0:11:24 > 0:11:29- I want that room.- I'm at the top, I'm at the top this night.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32- You'll have to sort it out. - You're not sharing a bedroom. We want you to sleep.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34That's a no from Mum and Dad, then!

0:11:34 > 0:11:38Onto the master bedroom, which the twins think is up for grabs.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44- Nice picture! - OUR bedroom!- It's MY bedroom!

0:11:44 > 0:11:47- Excuse me, Lady Muck!- Oh, dear!

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Alex has got a fight on her hands.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- You are not having it.- And Anthony is predicting more trouble...

0:11:52 > 0:11:56We're gonna have problems with the bedrooms - there's bunk beds in one

0:11:56 > 0:11:59and they both want that room, but we don't want to put them together

0:11:59 > 0:12:01because they'll never go to sleep!

0:12:01 > 0:12:04So how are they feeling about the rental property?

0:12:04 > 0:12:07I think it looks, it feels a little bit like a holiday home,

0:12:07 > 0:12:13but that could be a typical Australian house,

0:12:13 > 0:12:15we don't know until we see some more.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Yes, we both looked on the internet and obviously looked into properties,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21and you're never sure what to expect until you get here.

0:12:21 > 0:12:26I think it would be quite similar to the house we're looking for, but for our work,

0:12:26 > 0:12:31to do what we do, teaching music, I don't think this area, with such close neighbours, I don't think

0:12:31 > 0:12:35they'd appreciate it so much if we started playing the trumpet in here.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39The family have had their first taste of Australian property and the jury's out.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42Tomorrow things are going to get a whole lot more complicated.

0:12:46 > 0:12:50Back in the UK, the Evans are deeply attached to their home.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54It's a three-bedroom property in a remote hamlet in Shropshire with a big garden

0:12:54 > 0:13:00and plenty of space to play their instruments as loudly as they like.

0:13:00 > 0:13:06If they braved the UK housing market and sold up, they would have £200,000...

0:13:06 > 0:13:10around Australian 400,000 to spend.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13They need a three-bed home with a dedicated space

0:13:13 > 0:13:17for practising and teaching music without upsetting the neighbours.

0:13:17 > 0:13:23Given Melbourne's property market, they'd be lucky to find somewhere big enough for the money.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26We found them three properties to get a realistic idea

0:13:26 > 0:13:30of what they could afford if they made the big decision to emigrate.

0:13:33 > 0:13:37Property 1 is a three-bedroom bungalow in the suburb of Bentley East,

0:13:37 > 0:13:39just half an hour from the city.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43It's on the market for Australian 460,000,

0:13:43 > 0:13:47just over their budget at £230,000.

0:13:48 > 0:13:53- The family's search for space doesn't get off to the best start... - Wipe your feet.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57It's a very small living room, isn't it? It's very compact.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01- It's smaller than what we've got at the moment, isn't it?- Quite compact.

0:14:01 > 0:14:02Don't panic yet, Anthony.

0:14:02 > 0:14:08A games room next to an open-plan dining area and kitchen creates quite a big room.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11- It's grown! - This is a bigger space, isn't it?

0:14:11 > 0:14:14Much bigger! It's bigger than I expected it to be.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16- I don't think we need a snooker table, do we?!- No!

0:14:16 > 0:14:21Give us a break, Anthony! There must be something here that you like?

0:14:21 > 0:14:25- Nice kitchen.- That's your area.- Yep.

0:14:25 > 0:14:30That's more promising, but are Alex and Anthony ready for double-trouble in the bedrooms!

0:14:30 > 0:14:32- This looks like the smallest of them.- It's a gym at the moment

0:14:32 > 0:14:36but it is a bedroom, girls, so this will be one of your bedrooms.

0:14:36 > 0:14:37- Not mine.- Too small.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40That wardrobe is too small.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42The wardrobe's too small for you!

0:14:42 > 0:14:44- Yeah.- I'm sorry!

0:14:44 > 0:14:47Do we need the second bedroom just for your wardrobe?

0:14:47 > 0:14:48- Yeah!- OK, then.

0:14:48 > 0:14:54Rebecca has a Victoria Beckham- size wardrobe in mind, and it's not shaping up!

0:14:54 > 0:14:56Maybe the next bedroom will meet her approval.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00The same size.

0:15:00 > 0:15:01It looks much bigger.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04It does seem bigger. It's a different shape, isn't it?

0:15:04 > 0:15:07- Yeah.- Feels smaller to me.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11Oh, dear! Now Amy doesn't seem too impressed!

0:15:11 > 0:15:14- They're both quite big bedrooms, aren't they? - Yeah, neither of them are tiny.

0:15:14 > 0:15:19- It's difficult to work out the size of the other bedroom without seeing a bed in it.- Yeah.

0:15:19 > 0:15:23Onto the master bedroom and the girls have twigged that it's for Mum and Dad.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25Mum's bedroom.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28- Mummy!- What?- It's en-suite!

0:15:28 > 0:15:31And that must be a walk-in wardrobe.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34- That's my wardrobe. Where's yours? - Where's my stuff gonna go?

0:15:34 > 0:15:38- It's a lot bigger than the other bedrooms, isn't it?- Yes. That's because it's for two people.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41It's really unusual having the different shape.

0:15:41 > 0:15:42It's not purely square, is it?

0:15:42 > 0:15:48Finally somebody's happy with the size and shape of a room, but how will the garden measure up?

0:15:48 > 0:15:50This is a nice space, look.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55- Not the sort of garden we were expecting, I don't think. - It's just not, is it?

0:15:55 > 0:15:59They're having trouble letting go of their much-loved UK home.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03We're so used to having a big garden, we haven't really thought about

0:16:03 > 0:16:05what the practicality would be of what we'd get here.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08There's nowhere at the front to run around, is there?

0:16:08 > 0:16:12It's looking really bleak until they discover a useful extra.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17This spacious double garage could be ideal for teaching music.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19- Wow!- That's cool!

0:16:19 > 0:16:22- So that's just to the side of the front door?- Yep.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24But Anthony has spotted yet another problem.

0:16:24 > 0:16:29There's not much room for pupils' parking if we're going to teach from here, is there?

0:16:29 > 0:16:31No. It would have to be on-road, wouldn't it?

0:16:31 > 0:16:35- They'd have to park at the end and walk.- You wouldn't get more than two cars here.

0:16:35 > 0:16:39All things considered, it seems that size really does matter to the Evans family.

0:16:41 > 0:16:47The house we've just viewed is quite nice but it's a little compact.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49I'm thinking of music-making and where we would do it,

0:16:49 > 0:16:53there's no separate bit where we can say go and practice in there.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55There's no fourth bedroom that we could use as a music room

0:16:55 > 0:17:00or a separate sort of family living room or something that could be turned into just a music room.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04With it being all open-plan, down that bit, I don't think it would suit us.

0:17:04 > 0:17:10It's a nice house, but I don't think it suits the way we want,

0:17:10 > 0:17:14or what we were expecting to live in.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18Property 1 just isn't big enough for them and it's slightly over budget.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22Maybe Property 2 will hit the right note.

0:17:22 > 0:17:27It's a three-bedroom home in Aspendale, a coastal suburb south of the city.

0:17:27 > 0:17:32This colourful property has bags of character and is just five minutes from the beach.

0:17:32 > 0:17:38They'd need Australian 550,000 or £275,000 to buy it.

0:17:38 > 0:17:44It's over budget, but if they could find enough teaching work, this is a property they could aspire to.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50This house takes open-plan living to an extreme level.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53- Look at that table! - That table is amazing!

0:17:53 > 0:17:57The furniture seems to be making a good impression, at least.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01- Nice space this, isn't it?- It's an odd shape, it's nice, really unusual.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04- Yeah, I like this.- It's big, isn't it?- Yes. A nice space.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06- It's bigger than I thought it was gonna be.- It's a nice space.

0:18:06 > 0:18:12The kitchen, by contrast, is tiny and it's a pretty shocking colour!

0:18:12 > 0:18:14- The kitchen is small, though, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:18:14 > 0:18:18- Particularly for you.- It is. There's no work surface, is there?

0:18:18 > 0:18:22Next stop, the bedrooms, but will they meet the twins' high standards?

0:18:24 > 0:18:26- A little bedroom. - You've got to step down.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29It's a funny shape. Yeah, a funny shape... I like it.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Not very big wardrobe!

0:18:31 > 0:18:34That's a no, then!

0:18:34 > 0:18:38Next door the family-sized bathroom looks big enough...

0:18:38 > 0:18:42and could this be the perfect place for the twins to scrub up?

0:18:42 > 0:18:45- There's no toilet in here. - Huge shower! Two showers!

0:18:45 > 0:18:48- Two showers? That's fantastic, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52They're still a bit baffled by the Aussie-style layout.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56- It's still getting used to everything being on one level, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58We're so used to everything being on two.

0:18:58 > 0:19:03The family are not entirely convinced and given the price, it's not a bad thing,

0:19:03 > 0:19:06but this property has a winning feature they're about to see...

0:19:08 > 0:19:10Now this would be the music room, wouldn't it?

0:19:10 > 0:19:15- Wow!- And it would be pretty perfect, wouldn't it?- It's amazing!

0:19:15 > 0:19:19It's a turning point! Suddenly they can see themselves moving in.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22The piano needs to be off the outside wall, doesn't it?

0:19:22 > 0:19:26- There's enough room in here to put...- Put it in the middle! - We can get a grand!

0:19:26 > 0:19:30There's room for any size of piano, and plenty of storage space, too.

0:19:30 > 0:19:31Instrument store.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34The library! The music library!

0:19:34 > 0:19:38- And instrument store!- Wow!

0:19:38 > 0:19:42This is amazing. But there's enough... you could get a quintet in here!

0:19:42 > 0:19:44- Yeah!- What's a quintet?- Five people.

0:19:44 > 0:19:45Five people playing together.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48The studio is everything they dreamed of...

0:19:48 > 0:19:53just the right space to make noise and stay friends with the neighbours, but it comes at a price.

0:19:53 > 0:19:57The garden is small in comparison to their UK one,

0:19:57 > 0:20:01it backs onto a golf course, but Anthony and Alex fail to see the benefit.

0:20:01 > 0:20:06With the golf course, you're never gonna get any privacy, there's going to be people walking past

0:20:06 > 0:20:09all the time, so we might have to put a proper fence up.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12Yeah, you couldn't lie and sunbathe in a bikini or anything, really!

0:20:12 > 0:20:15- Well, no, I wouldn't, anyway! - I should hope not!

0:20:15 > 0:20:20Me too! So would Property 2 give them the all-important room to make sweet music?

0:20:22 > 0:20:25The studio space is absolutely spot-on, exactly what we need.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28- That studio is just...brilliant! - It's great.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31I love the space and it's perfect for making music.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33You wouldn't disturb anybody, it should be OK.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37- And the location seems to be working, too.- The area seems lovely.

0:20:37 > 0:20:44Even though we're not as rural as we thought we'd want to be, it has that feeling of being rural.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47And Amy can see herself living here.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51The bedrooms are quite widely apart from each other

0:20:51 > 0:20:54- so you can just stay in there... - You've got your own space, haven't you?

0:20:54 > 0:20:57- You have your own privacy in your room.- You can get away from your sister!- Yeah.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00- Is that what you're thinking?- Yeah.

0:21:00 > 0:21:07They have found the spacious home they need, but at £75,000 over budget, it would break the bank.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Will Property 3 help them make up their minds?

0:21:10 > 0:21:15This three-bed house in the city suburb of Oakley South is more affordable.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19It's further from the beach but it has extra space on offer

0:21:19 > 0:21:26in the shape of a sunroom and a car port and it's bang on their budget at Australian 400,000...

0:21:26 > 0:21:27around £200,000.

0:21:27 > 0:21:31Once inside, they're straight into a very modern living room

0:21:31 > 0:21:36with a stunning fireplace, but Anthony is still struggling with the open plan concept.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38I think I'd want doors on from there.

0:21:38 > 0:21:43- Everywhere's open plan, though, isn't it?- Yeah. It was gonna be a cosy room...- From the entrance...

0:21:43 > 0:21:46Will the kitchen, his favourite room in the house, cheer him up?

0:21:46 > 0:21:50Kitchen/diner. Yes, it's a nice work surface. The kitchen... It is small, isn't it?

0:21:50 > 0:21:53The kitchen's huge, but the dining area is the smallest.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56It's the smallest open-plan diner,

0:21:56 > 0:22:00- kitchen/diner, we've seen, isn't it? - Yes.- It's quite small, very small.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02Oh, dear! It's a big let-down.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05Let's hope the bedrooms are on the more generous side.

0:22:05 > 0:22:11Finally, after a hard day searching, Amy and Rebecca find the holy grail of storage space!

0:22:11 > 0:22:13You can have a wardrobe for me!

0:22:13 > 0:22:17These look like doors into a room!

0:22:17 > 0:22:20- Yes, this is the wardrobe, isn't it? Walk-in wardrobes.- They won't open.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22It's a good size room bedroom, isn't it?

0:22:22 > 0:22:27And it's nice having a double room at the front...

0:22:27 > 0:22:32The family are beginning to feel more positive, but then they step into the hall...

0:22:32 > 0:22:36We could put a piano there, but then you'd have to have doors on here.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39- And you couldn't play with the kids in bed.- No.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43It's just odd, isn't it, because the hallway's massive, but you can't do anything with it.

0:22:43 > 0:22:49This property boasts extra space in the shape of a sun room, but is it what Alex and Anthony had in mind?

0:22:49 > 0:22:52When it said sun room, I thought it was going to have a glass roof.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56- Yeah. Because we couldn't do music in here, either.- No.- It's too thin.

0:22:56 > 0:23:02It's a blow. Without that extra space for teaching, this property just won't work for them.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05The back garden is their last hope.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08- Nice decking area.- That's nice.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12Unlike the previous garden, the deck is a nicely secluded area.

0:23:12 > 0:23:18It's nice through the outside. I like this, so that you can't actually see anybody else.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20It creates a bit of privacy.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23That must be the way you drive into the car port then, is it?

0:23:23 > 0:23:28And maybe the adjacent car port could be used as a music room.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31The problem is, it doesn't have any walls.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33- You could get two cars under here. - Yeah, we would.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35But where are we going to do the music?

0:23:35 > 0:23:38We can't. There wouldn't be a music room, would there?

0:23:38 > 0:23:41I do like the outside decking, but it is very small.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43There's no garden to speak of, is there?

0:23:43 > 0:23:45- It's just too small.- Yep.

0:23:45 > 0:23:51Yet again, they're seriously disappointed with the lack of space available in this price bracket.

0:23:51 > 0:23:56It is a very nice house, but it doesn't suit us. There's nowhere for us to do our music...

0:23:56 > 0:23:58The price is definitely in budget, erm...

0:23:58 > 0:24:01and so in that aspect it has shown

0:24:01 > 0:24:06that our budget isn't unrealistic and our budget could be met out here.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10Melbourne property has been a big let down for the Evans

0:24:10 > 0:24:12and their decision is swaying towards home.

0:24:12 > 0:24:16The house that we've got in the UK is really nice.

0:24:16 > 0:24:21Unique little place with quite a nice garden and plenty of rural space around us.

0:24:21 > 0:24:26The houses we've seen so far have not given us any of that feel at all.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29The price of the houses we feel, well, I feel,

0:24:29 > 0:24:33might be a little bit on the high side in the areas that we've looked.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35The houses we've seen have all been really nice.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39They've been very different to UK houses but we've still liked the houses...

0:24:39 > 0:24:43they've just been too small and impractical for what we require,

0:24:43 > 0:24:46but we would certainly want to continue looking.

0:24:46 > 0:24:50Property one was far too small for the family.

0:24:50 > 0:24:54They fell in love with property two but it would break the budget,

0:24:54 > 0:24:57and the third house was unsuitable in every respect,

0:24:57 > 0:25:01so after all that, can they see themselves buying a house down under?

0:25:01 > 0:25:04Judging by the three properties that we've seen...

0:25:04 > 0:25:07I think that I will have to go for...

0:25:07 > 0:25:10UK.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14And I'll also vote...UK.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16It's a major setback for the family.

0:25:16 > 0:25:20The reality of what they could get for their money has been a shock

0:25:20 > 0:25:23and nothing has come close to replacing their UK home.

0:25:26 > 0:25:30The Evans were surprised their money wouldn't go further in Melbourne,

0:25:30 > 0:25:36so for them to move to Australia, finding well-paid work is essential.

0:25:36 > 0:25:42They find making a living in the UK as music teachers tough, so can they make it work down under?

0:25:42 > 0:25:47Back at home, Alex and Anthony's jobs as music teachers is wearing them down.

0:25:47 > 0:25:53They work all hours, commute long distances and rarely spend time together as a family.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56We're hoping that the work life won't be as manic

0:25:56 > 0:26:00as what we have to do to make ends meet in the UK

0:26:00 > 0:26:04and we won't have to work all the hours that God sends

0:26:04 > 0:26:08to live the way we want to live.

0:26:09 > 0:26:12As the main visa applicant, Alex is spending the day

0:26:12 > 0:26:17at a local primary school to get an idea of Aussie music teaching.

0:26:17 > 0:26:22It's just a ten minute drive from their rental property and has a great reputation for music.

0:26:22 > 0:26:28While Alex gets to work, Anthony and the girls are heading off to get a taste of food shopping in Melbourne.

0:26:28 > 0:26:34With the family's future in mind, Alex is anxious to make a good impression.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36Ah, look who's here?

0:26:36 > 0:26:38- Hi, Justin.- How are you, Alex?

0:26:38 > 0:26:41- Pleased to meet you.- You too.

0:26:41 > 0:26:46Unlike the UK, music education in Australia is often provided by independent agencies.

0:26:46 > 0:26:52Alongside teaching, Justin Forster runs his own company placing staff in schools across Melbourne.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55He's a great contact and someone Alex really needs to impress.

0:26:55 > 0:27:01It's only 8 o'clock in the morning, but Justin and his young musicians are raring to go.

0:27:01 > 0:27:06So what we're going to do today is we'll have the band rehearsal up until 9 o'clock

0:27:06 > 0:27:11and then after that, we do a little bit of private woodwind teaching...

0:27:11 > 0:27:17There's a busy day planned and it's looking scarily hands on for Alex.

0:27:18 > 0:27:23So, this is our band room, and this is the music room of the school.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26It's time for Alex to step up and perform.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29One, two, three, four.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38OK. And drop it there.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Hm. Well, Alex is feeling positive.

0:27:40 > 0:27:44I must say, it's really impressive to see a band within a primary school.

0:27:44 > 0:27:49- Yeah?- In the UK it's quite rare to get a band of this size in a primary school.

0:27:49 > 0:27:54The morning is flying by and so far Alex has loved joining in with the children,

0:27:54 > 0:27:57but Justin wants to take a closer look at her teaching skills

0:27:57 > 0:28:02and so she's going solo, teaching a lesson in one of the school's practice rooms.

0:28:02 > 0:28:06Today, she's teaching brothers Steve and Daniel, with Justin keeping a watchful eye.

0:28:06 > 0:28:08OK, this is Alex.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11All I want you to do is to make up a little rhythm, but only using that one note.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17Whilst Alex is being put through her paces,

0:28:17 > 0:28:21Anthony and the girls check out Melbourne's Queen Victoria food market.

0:28:22 > 0:28:26This local institution has been feeding Melbournians for 130 years.

0:28:26 > 0:28:32From crocodile meat to emu and kangaroo, it has an incredible array of produce for sale.

0:28:32 > 0:28:37This morning, Anthony and the girls are shopping for an all-Australian barbie.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39I think I'll buy some of that!

0:28:43 > 0:28:46- Six dollars 25.- That's great.

0:28:47 > 0:28:52The chance to try before you buy is winning Amy and Rebecca over.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55Right, we'll get some salad.

0:28:55 > 0:29:00So having tasted the wares of the market, is keen cook Anthony impressed?

0:29:00 > 0:29:03There's so much to choose from, it's unbelievable.

0:29:03 > 0:29:05All the fruit and veg is very, very fresh.

0:29:05 > 0:29:08It's really good, but too busy for me, I think.

0:29:08 > 0:29:13And he can't help wondering how Alex is getting on...

0:29:13 > 0:29:17Hopefully she'll come back with some positive feedback

0:29:17 > 0:29:20from the potential employers. Hopefully we'll find something.

0:29:20 > 0:29:25- Brilliant!- Back at school, Alex is getting ready to teach her second lesson of the day.

0:29:25 > 0:29:30Thankfully she has an instrument in common with her next pupil, Sarah.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32- Do you want to do it as a duet? - OK.

0:29:32 > 0:29:37We'll rattle through and I'll let you lead it, so whatever speed you want to go, you take it.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39One, two, three, four.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43So with the end of Alex's audition in sight,

0:29:43 > 0:29:46does Justin think she's got what it takes?

0:29:46 > 0:29:51So far, what she has shown is all the attributes that a good teacher has.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54It is early days, but if Alex and her family decided

0:29:54 > 0:29:58to come to Melbourne to live, that would be a great thing for us.

0:29:58 > 0:30:04But to make the move, Alex needs to be certain that both she and Anthony could find enough work.

0:30:04 > 0:30:08After the lesson, she is eager to find out what Justin could offer.

0:30:08 > 0:30:14At the current position, what sort of hours, what amount of work would be available with your company?

0:30:14 > 0:30:19Immediately, what I would look at is about nine to ten hours' work

0:30:19 > 0:30:22at three different schools, just a couple of days a week.

0:30:22 > 0:30:24Well, it's not full-time, but it's a start.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27What about the all important commute?

0:30:27 > 0:30:30At the moment I can be doing five schools in a day

0:30:30 > 0:30:33and I can be covering 30 miles just from my first to my last school.

0:30:33 > 0:30:38- Really?- During the day as well as getting to and from the schools. - Over in England?- Yes.- Yeah?

0:30:38 > 0:30:40Wow! No, nothing like that here.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43You would never work five schools in one day.

0:30:43 > 0:30:49The thought of that makes me tired. How have you been coping with that? No wonder you're coming down here.

0:30:49 > 0:30:54So has her morning at the school left Alex feeling she could make a go at music teaching in Melbourne?

0:30:54 > 0:30:56The amount of work Justin is able to offer

0:30:56 > 0:31:00wouldn't give me my full-time salary, I would need to supplement it.

0:31:00 > 0:31:04I couldn't manage on just this one job with ten hours a week.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06And how will she vote?

0:31:06 > 0:31:08UK or Australia?

0:31:10 > 0:31:13From the work experience at the school, it's been a really positive experience.

0:31:13 > 0:31:19I've had a great time and really interesting to compare the work over here with my work in the UK,

0:31:19 > 0:31:21and so for work, my vote has to be...

0:31:23 > 0:31:26..Australia.

0:31:26 > 0:31:32With one part-time offer of work to go on, is Alex sure she would be making the right decision?

0:31:36 > 0:31:42Alex and Anthony Evans and twins, Rebecca and Amy, long for a simpler and less stressful way of life.

0:31:42 > 0:31:45We're working too much in this country to make ends meet,

0:31:45 > 0:31:48and we think that perhaps over there,

0:31:48 > 0:31:50life might be a little bit better.

0:31:50 > 0:31:55But their day looking at Melbourne property made them realise there's no place like home.

0:31:55 > 0:31:59The houses have been very different to UK houses, but we've still liked the houses.

0:31:59 > 0:32:02They've just been too small and impractical for what we require.

0:32:02 > 0:32:08Time spent in the classroom showed Alex that teaching in Australia isn't really any easier.

0:32:08 > 0:32:12I couldn't manage on just this one job with ten hours per week.

0:32:12 > 0:32:14And when push finally comes to shove,

0:32:14 > 0:32:17would Anthony be able to leave his grown-up children,

0:32:17 > 0:32:19Katie and Aaron behind?

0:32:22 > 0:32:27The true cost of moving down under is hitting home for Anthony and Alex,

0:32:27 > 0:32:34but, given their stressful life back in the UK, could the Australian lifestyle be the deciding factor?

0:32:34 > 0:32:40Today, Alex, Anthony and the girls are hiring bikes and setting off to explore the Melbourne coastline.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45The city and its surrounds offer numerous bike trails,

0:32:45 > 0:32:47perfect for a family day out.

0:32:47 > 0:32:49The Evans are following a beach-side route

0:32:49 > 0:32:53which leads up to St Kilda Pier, a historic Melbourne landmark.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56It's a rare opportunity for some quality time together.

0:32:56 > 0:33:01At the moment, I hardly see Alex because she's out at work or I'm out at work.

0:33:01 > 0:33:06We've got to find some time to be a family, which is the thing we really feel we don't do at the moment.

0:33:06 > 0:33:11But the reality of what they'll be leaving behind is beginning to sink in.

0:33:11 > 0:33:13This is the time by the end of our visit here

0:33:13 > 0:33:16that we're likely to feel the distance

0:33:16 > 0:33:21and be much more aware of what and who we'll miss back in the UK...

0:33:21 > 0:33:25friends, family, location... everything that we're used to.

0:33:25 > 0:33:29And there's the girls' future to weigh up.

0:33:29 > 0:33:34I'm not sure how the impact of actually emigrating there will have on the girls

0:33:34 > 0:33:38and whether they understand that we're not coming back, I don't know.

0:33:38 > 0:33:40But I don't know whether

0:33:40 > 0:33:44they'll miss their grandparents or their friends from school...

0:33:44 > 0:33:48things that are special to them.

0:33:48 > 0:33:54There are so many pros and cons to mull over before they make their life-changing decision.

0:33:54 > 0:33:58Amy and Rebecca have really enjoyed the ride.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00Well, we've been cycling

0:34:00 > 0:34:04and I kept doing races with Daddy and I kept winning.

0:34:04 > 0:34:09I like it because it's very different to what we do at home.

0:34:09 > 0:34:13It's really unusual for us sitting somewhere like this, at the end of a pier,

0:34:13 > 0:34:18yet having a fantastic view of the Melbourne skyline, and it's just so unlike anything in the UK.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21But Anthony is keeping a close eye on the pennies...

0:34:21 > 0:34:25The girls had a sandwich each and me and Alex have had a cup of coffee,

0:34:25 > 0:34:29and they had a milkshake and it's worked out about £15,

0:34:29 > 0:34:32roughly, which is maybe a little bit expensive,

0:34:32 > 0:34:37but we are in like a very touristy type place, really, so we'd expect to spend a bit more money.

0:34:38 > 0:34:44At the end of the day, is the Melbourne lifestyle ringing the family's bell?

0:34:44 > 0:34:48In the UK you'd have to pay to take the girls into some sort of indoor activity centre,

0:34:48 > 0:34:52whereas here, it's just throw them on the beach and they'll be fine.

0:34:52 > 0:34:58Everything seems more welcoming, it seems more open to family activities and things like the cycling.

0:34:58 > 0:35:01Having the regular cycle paths and regular walkways.

0:35:01 > 0:35:05It's just been really nice having the openness and the facility to do it.

0:35:05 > 0:35:07So, how will they vote?

0:35:07 > 0:35:08UK or Australia?

0:35:08 > 0:35:11This morning's experience, with bike-riding,

0:35:11 > 0:35:15we've all had a really enjoyable time, the weather's been fantastic,

0:35:15 > 0:35:17so my vote for lifestyle has to be...

0:35:20 > 0:35:22Australia.

0:35:22 > 0:35:25This is the sort of activity you can do all year round here,

0:35:25 > 0:35:28and in England you can't do that, so my vote was...

0:35:28 > 0:35:30..Australia.

0:35:30 > 0:35:35With thoughts turning to home, could the Evans really afford to fall for the Aussie way of life?

0:35:38 > 0:35:45For Anthony, leaving the UK also means leaving his grown-up children and, when you're in a new country

0:35:45 > 0:35:50so far away from loved ones, friends become terribly important.

0:35:50 > 0:35:54We recorded some messages for the family from their loved ones back home.

0:35:57 > 0:36:00Hi, Dad, hi, Alex, hi, Amy, hi, Rebecca.

0:36:00 > 0:36:02Hope all's good out there.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05Parties here are fantastic, going all night, all morning.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09When Alex first mentioned it,

0:36:09 > 0:36:11I didn't have any reservations

0:36:11 > 0:36:14because I knew she's one of these people

0:36:14 > 0:36:17that is gonna do something completely off the wall.

0:36:17 > 0:36:23Alex is really supportive of my decisions and choices that I make

0:36:23 > 0:36:24and I can always go to her

0:36:24 > 0:36:28when I want some advice or any questions I wanna ask her.

0:36:28 > 0:36:31She's always got the information that I want to hear

0:36:31 > 0:36:33and we get on really well.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36We get on more like sisters than step-mum and step-daughter.

0:36:36 > 0:36:39You don't get true friends like Alex every day.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42You might have lots of acquaintances

0:36:42 > 0:36:45but for me, she is one of my best friends,

0:36:45 > 0:36:50and I will miss her and I said I wouldn't cry and I'm trying not to!

0:36:50 > 0:36:52She's a very bubbly person

0:36:52 > 0:36:56but has a great private core to her, I think, as well.

0:36:56 > 0:37:00I was there at the birth of the girls, the twins,

0:37:00 > 0:37:03which was a great privilege for me,

0:37:03 > 0:37:06so I've seen them really from the year dot,

0:37:06 > 0:37:09and have been very lucky to do so.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12Anthony is going to have a bit of a problem

0:37:12 > 0:37:17because he's going to feel really guilty at leaving Katie and Aaron.

0:37:17 > 0:37:19And he needs to get over that

0:37:19 > 0:37:22and realise that Katie and Aaron are now adult

0:37:22 > 0:37:25and they've got their own lives.

0:37:25 > 0:37:28You only get one dad, like,

0:37:28 > 0:37:30and once he's, er...gone,

0:37:30 > 0:37:36I can't pop in and just say hello or borrow money.

0:37:36 > 0:37:40I'll miss the girls because they look up to me, don't they?

0:37:40 > 0:37:42And like, you know...

0:37:42 > 0:37:45I admire them... they're really great girls.

0:37:45 > 0:37:48I'm gonna miss having a friend that is that close

0:37:48 > 0:37:51because school friends come and go,

0:37:51 > 0:37:56but when you find a good one, it's really hard to wave goodbye.

0:37:56 > 0:38:00It's the realisation that if you do say,

0:38:00 > 0:38:03you're saying bye, and...

0:38:03 > 0:38:07and you might not see them again, because it's such a long-term thing,

0:38:07 > 0:38:10isn't it, and we will miss them,

0:38:10 > 0:38:14because it's our baby brother. You must do what's best for you.

0:38:14 > 0:38:18It's important that you do what's best for you.

0:38:18 > 0:38:23We'll miss you and we'll always love you, but do what's best.

0:38:23 > 0:38:28Alex, you're my oldest friend and we go back so long.

0:38:28 > 0:38:31We've had good times and bad times and we've been there for each other,

0:38:31 > 0:38:36so I miss you, and I will miss you, but we'll always keep in touch.

0:38:38 > 0:38:39We're missing you loads.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42Can't wait for you to get back. See you soon, bye.

0:38:45 > 0:38:49I hope this first experience of Australia turns out to be really good for you

0:38:49 > 0:38:54and if it's what you finally want to do, you know you go with our blessing and our love.

0:38:54 > 0:38:59We'll miss you, but we'll see you again sometime, somehow.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12I expected it to be hard when we saw it,

0:39:12 > 0:39:15and I expect it to be even harder still if we take the plunge

0:39:15 > 0:39:19and decide to come and live out here, and I don't think that

0:39:19 > 0:39:21however much we prepare ourselves

0:39:21 > 0:39:24we'll ever really understand how hard it's gonna be until we do it.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26Yes, we'll miss them...but...

0:39:26 > 0:39:30They're grown up... My children are grown up.

0:39:30 > 0:39:34They've got their own lives to lead now and I can't be there for them

0:39:34 > 0:39:36all the time, but we've got to think about us

0:39:36 > 0:39:39and what we want and what's best for us.

0:39:39 > 0:39:43My mum being 88, obviously she could live for another 20 years.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46Knowing her, she's a real matriarch,

0:39:46 > 0:39:51but there is a chance that I might never see here again

0:39:51 > 0:39:53if I come back over here,

0:39:53 > 0:39:58but it's got to be a decision that we've got to make together

0:39:58 > 0:40:01and once we make that decision, that's that...there's no going back.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07Such a mix of emotions!

0:40:07 > 0:40:11However much a move down under beckons, it's clear that Anthony,

0:40:11 > 0:40:15for one, is being pulled in different directions.

0:40:17 > 0:40:21The trial week has been an important learning experience for the Evans.

0:40:21 > 0:40:25They came looking for a simpler life, but has it really been that different to the UK?

0:40:25 > 0:40:30Australian property left them feeling flat.

0:40:30 > 0:40:36The house prices, we feel, we'll need to go out of the city more

0:40:36 > 0:40:38to get what we want.

0:40:38 > 0:40:40In order to get an extra room

0:40:40 > 0:40:44that could be used as a music room,

0:40:44 > 0:40:45that would definitely mean

0:40:45 > 0:40:48that we needed to go a bit further out of Melbourne.

0:40:48 > 0:40:52Even the outer-Melbourne suburbs were still quite pricey,

0:40:52 > 0:40:54to give us the extra accommodation.

0:40:54 > 0:40:58Alex enjoyed her experience of music teaching down under.

0:40:58 > 0:41:04The work experience was a really positive experience.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07I was also very pleased to find the enthusiasm

0:41:07 > 0:41:11with teaching music and both by the pupils of learning music.

0:41:11 > 0:41:16The rate of pay of about 40 an hour is on par with what we're earning,

0:41:16 > 0:41:18or Alex is earning, in the UK.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21I earn a little bit more in private schools

0:41:21 > 0:41:24and Alex's work experience was in a public school,

0:41:24 > 0:41:27or state school, so it may be in the private schools,

0:41:27 > 0:41:29it might be a little bit more, maybe.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31We don't know. We'll have to see.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35But to make it work would mean combining part-time jobs,

0:41:35 > 0:41:41leaving little time for family life, and there is Amy and Rebecca's future to take into account.

0:41:41 > 0:41:45Obviously the girls and their impressions were a huge part of our decision.

0:41:45 > 0:41:48If they didn't want to do it, we really wouldn't.

0:41:48 > 0:41:53The impression I get from them is they both loved this week

0:41:53 > 0:41:59and they are, at the moment, talking about why do we have to go home, why can't we just stay?

0:42:02 > 0:42:06So as their trial week comes to an end, can the Evans see

0:42:06 > 0:42:10themselves taking the big leap and starting again in Australia?

0:42:12 > 0:42:17It's time for the family to make up their minds in one last vote.

0:42:17 > 0:42:21So we've had our week in Australia, and it's been interesting.

0:42:21 > 0:42:23My final vote is...

0:42:24 > 0:42:25..Australia.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27And my final vote is...

0:42:30 > 0:42:31..Australia.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34My final vote is...

0:42:35 > 0:42:38Australia.

0:42:38 > 0:42:39My final vote is...

0:42:40 > 0:42:42..Britain.

0:42:43 > 0:42:47Mum, Dad and Rebecca are ready to begin a new life down under,

0:42:47 > 0:42:51but for Amy, family and friends are just too important to leave behind.

0:42:51 > 0:42:56Although the Evans family didn't find the house of their dreams in Melbourne,

0:42:56 > 0:43:00they haven't given up hope of finding a new life in Australia.

0:43:00 > 0:43:03I could see Amy would really miss those loved ones back home,

0:43:03 > 0:43:09but the rest of the family feel they'll be better off moving where they're Wanted Down Under.

0:43:09 > 0:43:13Join us next time and find out what happens when another British family

0:43:13 > 0:43:16decide whether to go where they're Wanted Down Under.
