0:00:01 > 0:00:03Hello and welcome to Wanted Down Under.

0:00:03 > 0:00:08The show that catapults a British family right across the other side

0:00:08 > 0:00:12of the world to help them make the biggest decision of their life.

0:00:12 > 0:00:17Dave and Annabel Williams long for the great outdoors of New Zealand.

0:00:17 > 0:00:22We always go on holiday... "I'd love to retire here, I'd love to do this,

0:00:22 > 0:00:24"come and live here."

0:00:24 > 0:00:27We've got, potentially, the opportunity to do that.

0:00:27 > 0:00:32They think it would offer their children, Stephanie and Jake, a promising future.

0:00:32 > 0:00:37But daughter Stephanie isn't sure she can leave her boyfriend behind.

0:00:37 > 0:00:42Well, I don't know. I can't just miraculously make a decision, can I?

0:00:42 > 0:00:46It's obviously a lot easier for you lot than it is than me.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Will Stephanie's dilemma hold the family back,

0:00:49 > 0:00:52or will they end up going where they're Wanted Down Under?

0:01:14 > 0:01:20In the current economic downturn, a new life in New Zealand has a strong appeal.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24Last year, over 18,000 Brits grabbed the chance to transfer their skills,

0:01:24 > 0:01:28but had they thought through their decision to emigrate?

0:01:28 > 0:01:32We've given another 20 British families the chance of a lifetime -

0:01:32 > 0:01:36a week down under. After that, they'll have to vote one way or the other.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40Will they stay in the UK, or will they move to New Zealand?

0:01:40 > 0:01:45The Williams family from Scunthorpe live life to the full.

0:01:45 > 0:01:51They love to be outdoors and spend all their spare time kite surfing.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Having worked hard to raise their children, energetic

0:01:54 > 0:01:59parents Annabel and Dave dream of starting again in New Zealand.

0:01:59 > 0:02:07We could just bumble along here, which would be fine and that, or we could have 20 years

0:02:07 > 0:02:12of being really active, or 30 years being active, in paradise.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Dave works as a fuel tank driver and Annabel is an occupational

0:02:15 > 0:02:20therapist and the main visa applicant seeking work down under.

0:02:20 > 0:02:26I work with children of all ages and my aim, really, is to improve their coordination of movement.

0:02:28 > 0:02:33I always feel very lucky to enjoy the job that I do

0:02:33 > 0:02:35and want to go to work every day.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39Mum and Dad think a move to New Zealand would benefit the whole family.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42One of the main reasons is to move for the kids, really,

0:02:42 > 0:02:47cos we think they'll have a lot better chance of making more of

0:02:47 > 0:02:54a life for themselves, cos I think over here it's got to the point now where you need qualifications

0:02:54 > 0:02:57for the most mundane jobs now.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01The Williams took a brief trip to New Zealand in 2007.

0:03:01 > 0:03:0314-year-old Jake really liked what he saw.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07It was a lot better than what I expected it to be.

0:03:07 > 0:03:12Amazing landscapes and really nice towns, places like that.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Beaches were really, really good.

0:03:16 > 0:03:22But, following a family argument, 16-year-old Stephanie didn't go and she has major doubts about her move.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26It's going to change what happens for the rest of my life.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31So I think that's why it's so hard and because I haven't yet been out

0:03:31 > 0:03:35there and I don't know what the place is like. It's that sort of fear of the unknown.

0:03:35 > 0:03:40And there's one important reason why she wants to stay at home.

0:03:40 > 0:03:45My boyfriend Dan's just different to anyone else I've ever been out with.

0:03:45 > 0:03:50Thinking about moving to New Zealand, I'm thinking, well, what if I miss out

0:03:50 > 0:03:54on what I could have with him.

0:03:54 > 0:04:02You can't just make a decision to keep other people happy because it changes your life.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Inevitably, her dilemma puts Mum and Dad in a difficult position.

0:04:06 > 0:04:13The worst situation, I think, would be if Stephanie didn't go and then

0:04:13 > 0:04:19having to, I think, make that decision as a mum and say, "Am I happy to leave?"

0:04:25 > 0:04:28With so much at stake, there are difficult choices ahead for the family.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31To help them decide if New Zealand is the right

0:04:31 > 0:04:37place for their future together and Annabel's career, we offered them a life-changing opportunity -

0:04:37 > 0:04:39a trip to Auckland on the North Island.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43We have three different lifestyles for the family to sample.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48One in the country, one in the city and one on the coast,

0:04:48 > 0:04:53each with an offer of a job and a brand-new way of life for them to enjoy on their budget.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57First, let's take a look at the country lifestyle.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00The family can experience the great outdoors in the

0:05:00 > 0:05:05Auckland countryside, from charming wildlife to breaktaking scenery.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08There's space to be found outdoors and in,

0:05:08 > 0:05:14with family homes ranging from £160,000 to over £300,000,

0:05:14 > 0:05:16for something more upmarket.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20For a starting salary of £20,000 a year, you could take an

0:05:20 > 0:05:26occupational therapy job in the brand-new unit at Waitakere Hospital.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Fellow Brit Jo Groundshill is a team leader here.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32So, Annabel, this is the gym.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35This is where the OTs work, alongside the physios.

0:05:35 > 0:05:41We also have speech therapists and social workers in our team and four therapy assistants.

0:05:41 > 0:05:47Here's some of the allied health team and we look forward to meeting you when you come down under.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51So that's the kind of lifestyle they can enjoy in the country.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55Let's see what's possible in the city on their budget.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58Auckland's sea-port location makes it an ideal spot for

0:05:58 > 0:06:04water lovers who want to stay within easy reach of central amenities.

0:06:04 > 0:06:09On the market for £275,000, this spacious four-bedroom home in

0:06:09 > 0:06:15the city suburb of Birkenhead has plenty of room for outdoor living.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17A community-based

0:06:17 > 0:06:22senior occupational therapist role is on offer, with a salary of up to £25,000.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Anna Findley tells us more.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27We take rehab to our patients.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31We visit them in their workplaces, their schools and their homes.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33As a community occupational therapist,

0:06:33 > 0:06:38we get to get out and about a lot and we get to see loads of the city.

0:06:38 > 0:06:44Annabel, I know you really would love working with us here, so I hope you pick us. See ya.

0:06:44 > 0:06:51It looks like their life could shape up pretty well in the city, but what about a new life on the coast?

0:06:51 > 0:06:55In Auckland, you're never far from a stretch of stunning coastline and

0:06:55 > 0:07:01when it comes to the beaches, you'll be spoilt for choice.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07For a three-bedroom family home in one of Auckland's coastal regions,

0:07:07 > 0:07:11prices start at around £175,000.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13But bayside homes with fantastic

0:07:13 > 0:07:16sea views can be found,

0:07:16 > 0:07:21with this three-bedroom house marketing for £260,000.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24At this beautifully situated treatment centre,

0:07:24 > 0:07:27you could be an occupational therapist caring for children.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Here, Lyndsey Rendall is keen to meet you.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33This is the national centre for children coming from

0:07:33 > 0:07:35all over New Zealand for rehabilitation.

0:07:35 > 0:07:42On a salary of around £25,000, you'll work as part of a small team of therapists.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46This is a wonderful sight and we're privileged to be here,

0:07:46 > 0:07:52but the best part about it is our staff and we'd be very happy for you to come and join us.

0:07:52 > 0:07:56There are three options in the Auckland area for the Williams.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58In the country, a great outdoor lifestyle

0:07:58 > 0:08:03and a job at Waitakere Hospital awaits Annabel and the family.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05In the city, Auckland's amenities

0:08:05 > 0:08:09and a community occupational therapist role are on offer.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13Or on the coast, kitesurfing opportunities

0:08:13 > 0:08:16and a job with Lyndsey Rendall are up for grabs.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20So three very different possibilities for our family to try.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24So which one did we decide would suit them best?

0:08:28 > 0:08:32As they love to be on the water, it's no surprise that the Williams

0:08:32 > 0:08:36tried out the coast option for their trial week down under.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40But would Auckland turn out to be a positive experience for all the family?

0:08:40 > 0:08:45It's a relief to be in the arrivals hall at the end of a 22-hour flight.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Long journey, but OK.

0:08:48 > 0:08:54- We've survived.- And Annabel is elated that daughter Stephanie's giving New Zealand a try.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57For me on the way over it's just been a really nice feeling

0:08:57 > 0:09:03to be able to know that Stephanie's going to see and experience what we saw when we came last time.

0:09:03 > 0:09:10And hopefully, she's going to be able to sort of sell herself on coming over to New Zealand.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13I think at the end of the week she'll be sold on it.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17The pressure is on Stephanie and though she's miles from boyfriend

0:09:17 > 0:09:19Dan she's trying to keep an open mind.

0:09:19 > 0:09:20I want to like it.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25I've a feeling it'll be the 11th hour before we know.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30Mum and Dad feel certain that Auckland will win the family over,

0:09:30 > 0:09:32but are they getting ahead of themselves?

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Wish us luck. It's going to be a very interesting week, this week.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43The Auckland region is one of 16 in New Zealand and its city is the largest in the country.

0:09:43 > 0:09:49It's the most prosperous and heavily populated area with well over a million inhabitants.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52For their week, the family are staying in a three-bedroom

0:09:52 > 0:09:56rental property in Browns Bay, an east coast suburb of the city.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Wow. Gorgeous.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Really really gorgeous spot.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03- That's lovely, that. - Look at the view.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05- Oh, wow.- Wow.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08Their home in Scunthorpe is on the banks of the Humber estuary.

0:10:08 > 0:10:13In Auckland, living by the water is a slightly different experience

0:10:13 > 0:10:15and is one they're very happy to discover.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19I highly doubt we'd get a view anywhere in the UK like this.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21This is a brilliant view, isn't it?

0:10:21 > 0:10:24- A bit of a contrast to home. - A lot different.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28Upstairs, there's a spacious viewing area with a telescope.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Oh, my word.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34Even more incredible than downstairs.

0:10:34 > 0:10:39Bedroom one is next door and Annabel's quick to make a reservation.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41This has got to be my spot...

0:10:41 > 0:10:44cos I need to be able to look out of that window in the morning.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46That room through there is mine, then.

0:10:46 > 0:10:51And there are two more bedrooms for Jake and Stephanie, which go down well.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53So this is my room. Double bed.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Yep. That's all that matters.

0:10:56 > 0:11:00Well, it sounds like Steph's imagining a new life here and for

0:11:00 > 0:11:03Annabel and Dave, the rental property is a dream come true.

0:11:03 > 0:11:08Just the thought of being able to get back from work, spot Dave down there

0:11:08 > 0:11:13out kitesurfing and say right, that's it, I'm going to get down there myself,

0:11:13 > 0:11:15would be absolutely wonderful.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19And it's a fantastic first taste of New Zealand property.

0:11:19 > 0:11:24I just can't wait to go and have a look at the houses and just see what's out there for us.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27Looks like the family have already found their dream home.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31It could be a tough act to follow.

0:11:35 > 0:11:40In the UK, the Williams live in a four-bedroom bungalow in a village near Scunthorpe.

0:11:40 > 0:11:45If they decide to sell up and make the move to New Zealand,

0:11:45 > 0:11:49they hope to have around £190,000 to spend.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Their dream home in Auckland would be a four-bedroom

0:11:52 > 0:11:55house with a double garage and a big garden with a view of the water.

0:11:55 > 0:12:00Annabel and Dave don't want to do any DIY as they'd rather be

0:12:00 > 0:12:04kitesurfing, so a finished property would be preferable.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07We found three homes to give the family an idea of what they

0:12:07 > 0:12:11could afford if they made the big decision to emigrate.

0:12:11 > 0:12:16Property one is a three-bedroom weatherboard home in the east coast suburb of Torbay.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18This property doesn't overlook the water,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21but it's close to the beaches and is within budget

0:12:21 > 0:12:27at 449,000 New Zealand dollars - around £180,000.

0:12:27 > 0:12:32On arrival, they're straight into a living area where it all goes a bit quiet.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42Their immediate reaction isn't encouraging.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- Small.- Yeah. I think that's just my first impression.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48The living area, a bit on the small side.

0:12:48 > 0:12:49The deck's really nice, though.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Yeah. It'd just be good to see

0:12:52 > 0:12:56- what's in the rest of the house, really.- Yeah.- Space.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59With two teenagers to accommodate, lots of space is essential.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Is the master bedroom a bit more roomy?

0:13:02 > 0:13:05Nice going on to the deck.

0:13:05 > 0:13:10- Yeah. It is, actually. I say, it is a slightly smaller bedroom.- Yeah.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Further along the central corridor are two bedrooms which could be

0:13:13 > 0:13:17ideal for Jake or Steph, if she decides to make the big move.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19The three of them are all basically the same.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23The same size, so there's no sort of box room.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Steph isn't impressed.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29It is quite small. It's not

0:13:29 > 0:13:31what I expected.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33- Doesn't give you a wow.- No.

0:13:33 > 0:13:37But the girls do find something they like in bedroom number three.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40Oh!

0:13:40 > 0:13:42No looking.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Nice.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47And at the end of the corridor, there's a modern bathroom.

0:13:47 > 0:13:52That's a good size. It's quite well proportioned, sort of looking at the bedrooms and bathroom.

0:13:52 > 0:13:58As with everything else in this property, the kitchen is small yet perfectly formed.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00And decorated in a modern style.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04But Dave isn't sure it's quite right for them.

0:14:05 > 0:14:10If anything, this would be an ideal first sort of home.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Underneath the property is a garage.

0:14:13 > 0:14:18Down here, storage space isn't the problem. Just the lack of head room.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20Hang up all your power tools.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22- Yeah. Low ceiling.- Low overhang.

0:14:22 > 0:14:27So, after a good look round, what do the Williams family make of property number one?

0:14:27 > 0:14:34You're paying for the location, so you're just looking at what you're willing to compromise.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38It'd be a lot nicer to have something with a bit more room,

0:14:38 > 0:14:45especially me and Jake'd end up arguing a lot more if we were living so close together.

0:14:45 > 0:14:50I want my own space more and more now.

0:14:50 > 0:14:55Well, they don't seem too impressed and space is obviously the major issue.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Let's hope the next property will make up their minds.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02Property number two is a recently renovated three-bedroom home,

0:15:02 > 0:15:06located on the Glengarry Ridge, in a suburb southwest of Auckland city.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10It's not by the beach but it's under budget

0:15:10 > 0:15:15at only 410,000 New Zealand dollars. Around £165,000.

0:15:15 > 0:15:21Owners Robin and Grant have lived here for 32 years and they're ready to show the family around.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23This is quite a big party deck.

0:15:23 > 0:15:29This property has quite a bit of outdoor space, including a huge deck on the first floor.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33It's actually got a double garage underneath. It's all concrete

0:15:33 > 0:15:36- block and everything. - Yep.- It's very sturdy.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38- Oh, wow.- It's a huge bonus.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40- Yeah.- It's a nice big deck. Lovely.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46Glass doors lead onto a typical living area.

0:15:46 > 0:15:48Having the open-plan feel is really nice.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51It's something that really does appeal.

0:15:53 > 0:15:58- Bedroom one is spacious and bright. - This is a wonderful sized room.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01So you're quite high up here and you do have a view.

0:16:01 > 0:16:06It's just a bit unfortunate today is the middle of winter, but in the summer it's a cracker.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09- I can imagine.- Really wonderful. - Gorgeous.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13The second bedroom's also a generous size.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15It's a really nice space, isn't it, actually.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19There's a big desk there, as well.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21And double wardrobe in here.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24- Oh, brilliant.- Where he has his gear.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26Yep.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29And come on through to the bathroom and have a look in there.

0:16:29 > 0:16:35We put a heated towel rail in here to spoil ourselves a bit these days.

0:16:35 > 0:16:39The bathroom has recently been decorated and makes a good impression.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Funky sink.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44- Funky sink.- I like the sink.- Yeah.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48It's mains pressure here, too, of course, with the instant hot water.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51- Yeah.- That's really nice.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53Really practical, as well.

0:16:53 > 0:16:58The third bedroom is light, bright and plenty big enough for Steph or Jake.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02They are all nice-sized rooms.

0:17:02 > 0:17:08Finally, the garden feels positively huge in comparison to property number one.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12To have something like this with mature trees like this.

0:17:12 > 0:17:13Gorgeous, isn't it.

0:17:13 > 0:17:21So, at the end of their tour, has property two been more of a success?

0:17:21 > 0:17:24This is part of the lifestyle we're after, I think.

0:17:25 > 0:17:30The outdoor living, the flow of the house outside onto a huge deck.

0:17:30 > 0:17:34And it would work well for those space-seeking teenagers.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38I think it's a nice house. I like it. I like this area outside.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41- Yeah.- In the summer you can throw some parties and stuff.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47Can you just buy this house, please?

0:17:47 > 0:17:50Well, Jake's keen and even Steph's sounding committed.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54Looks like property number three has a lot to live up to.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57I can't wait to see what there is next to pull out of the bag.

0:17:57 > 0:18:02It's a big ask for the next house, I think.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06Property three is a four-bedroom executive home in

0:18:06 > 0:18:08a suburb southwest of Auckland city.

0:18:08 > 0:18:15It's architect designed, with a very modern interior and is on the market for 500,000 New Zealand dollars,

0:18:15 > 0:18:19just over the family's budget at £200,000.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23Estate agent Aran's arrived to show the Williams around.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25Wow.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28I'm not quite sure if this is what you're used to back home.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30- Modern.- Yeah.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33Very modern. Yeah.

0:18:33 > 0:18:39The downstairs living area has a trendy minimalist decor and the girls like its style.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42- Very nice.- It's really nice.

0:18:42 > 0:18:47This has got something to make it stand out.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50- It has, hasn't it?- Very nice.

0:18:50 > 0:18:55Next door, the huge garage with electric doors makes a great impression on Dave.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58Nice home for a boat.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00Yeah, isn't it just.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03The master bedroom is just along the ground floor corridor.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08- This is a nice size, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13There's a shower, as well.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15It's good cos you've got your own level.

0:19:15 > 0:19:19You're down here and they're up there and it's a bit of a space they can chill out on.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21- Yeah.- That's cool.

0:19:21 > 0:19:22Yeah. That's really good.

0:19:22 > 0:19:28Upstairs, there's a roomy landing and bedrooms for Steph and Jake.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31Separate levels could work well for the family and keep the peace.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34You could have a plasma on there, with a bit of a hinge.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37And settee, or sofa, there.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41- You could have a nice surround sound on the wall.- Yeah. Yeah.

0:19:41 > 0:19:46Mum and Dad love property two but Steph thinks this house is the one.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49This property really appeals with it being new and no maintenance.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51And the other one also appeals.

0:19:51 > 0:19:55This appeals more to you.

0:19:55 > 0:20:00- Yeah.- Only because you and Dad are obviously wanting to go off and do your own thing and whatever.

0:20:00 > 0:20:04- Yeah.- And all you've got really to do is cut the grass out the front.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07Steph's really taken with this property. A clever design feature

0:20:07 > 0:20:11- in the bathroom is yet another box ticked.- That's good. Yeah.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13It's a good idea, that.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17There's nothing worse than getting out the shower and being cold.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21- I wouldn't be able to stand there too long.- Get sunburnt.- Yeah.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24Good job this isn't Dad's floor, then.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27So what did they make of property number three?

0:20:27 > 0:20:31I think you're probably going to look for somewhere that meets sort of

0:20:31 > 0:20:34halfway between this and the other one for location.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37You need a bit more of the taste of New Zealand,

0:20:37 > 0:20:44for myself, to feel that we've made a move to New Zealand.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51The Williams family viewed three homes on the Auckland coast.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53Property one was too small.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56The second house worked well for parents and teenagers,

0:20:56 > 0:20:59whilst the modern design of property three wowed Steph.

0:20:59 > 0:21:05So how's their day property hunting left them feeling about New Zealand homes?

0:21:06 > 0:21:09I was really quite disappointed with the first house.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13Bit too small, really.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17The second house was near enough perfect, really. It had a nice setting.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19It's a change from the UK.

0:21:19 > 0:21:24I think I prefer the third one to the second.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27The third house was lovely, but a bit too clinical.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30I think the second house was perfect.

0:21:30 > 0:21:35They're divided over their favourite home, but will it affect their overall vote?

0:21:35 > 0:21:39When it comes to property, do they prefer the UK or New Zealand?

0:21:39 > 0:21:41One. Two. Three.

0:21:43 > 0:21:44New Zealand.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49- A result.- Excellent.

0:21:49 > 0:21:54The family are off to a great start and Steph has loved her first taste of Auckland life,

0:21:54 > 0:21:57but is her heart really in it?

0:22:00 > 0:22:04So the Williams family can see themselves living in the houses

0:22:04 > 0:22:07on offer in Auckland, but will mum Annabel,

0:22:07 > 0:22:13who's the main visa applicant, find the type of job she really wants and would it pay the bills?

0:22:15 > 0:22:21At home in the UK, Annabel is an occupational therapist, on a salary of £25,000.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Most of her time is spent in schools,

0:22:23 > 0:22:27where she works with children to improve their coordination.

0:22:27 > 0:22:32She loves her current role and finding a job to match it in New Zealand will be tough.

0:22:32 > 0:22:39Today, she's visiting a children's rehabilitation centre in Auckland to see how it compares.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43Whilst Mum investigates work, Dave, Steph and Jake get their

0:22:43 > 0:22:47strength up for a day exploring in nearby Devonport.

0:22:47 > 0:22:53A change in work would be a big gamble for Annabel and she's worried about what lies ahead.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57I am feeling a bit nervous, a bit apprehensive, cos at home,

0:22:57 > 0:23:02the area that I work in is quite a small sort of specialist area.

0:23:02 > 0:23:09And here, the client group is going to be quite different to the regular

0:23:09 > 0:23:11group of children that I work with at home.

0:23:11 > 0:23:16- Lyndsey Rendall runs the centre and she's waiting to say hello.- Welcome.

0:23:16 > 0:23:21- Nice to meet you. I'm Annabel. - It's lovely to see you here at last. Come on in.- Thank you.

0:23:21 > 0:23:28The Wilson Centre is a rehabilitation unit for residential and outpatients up to the age of 16.

0:23:28 > 0:23:33- Lyndsey takes Annabel to meet children she could be working with. - This is Annabel.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36- Hi, Annabel. - Yeah. This is Aroha.- Aroha.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40I need to practise so I can pronounce your name properly.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44Hello, Natalie. What's going on this morning?

0:23:44 > 0:23:47The children who come here, come here with complex cases

0:23:47 > 0:23:53following surgery or head injury and the caseload is as many

0:23:53 > 0:23:57children as we have here at the time, which is about 17, is the maximum.

0:23:57 > 0:24:02Of course, a huge amount of children come in here for outpatients, as well.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06At home, Annabel manages a caseload of 67 children,

0:24:06 > 0:24:09so the small and friendly feel here is welcome.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11It's lovely. It's a really nice relaxed feel.

0:24:11 > 0:24:17I think it's just the contrast to the UK knowing how many clients I've got on my caseload.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21It's been a busy morning for Annabel and in a nearby cafe,

0:24:21 > 0:24:25the rest of the family are preoccupied with how she's getting on.

0:24:25 > 0:24:30I think your mum'll vote a definite yes...

0:24:31 > 0:24:33all things considered.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37- I hope she does.- Yes, to what?

0:24:37 > 0:24:38- New Zealand.- New Zealand.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40I hope she votes yes.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43After a quick pitstop, the three of them set off

0:24:43 > 0:24:47to climb Mount Victoria, a volcano on Auckland's north shore.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49Steph's not really in the mood.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52Is it all right?

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Well, a headache's never OK.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56They always hurt.

0:24:56 > 0:24:58Pain is a sensation.

0:24:58 > 0:25:02I know. Sensations must be enjoyed to the fullest. Yeah, whatever.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05You take that route and I'll take that...

0:25:05 > 0:25:09and we'll all run, see who gets to the top first.

0:25:09 > 0:25:14But once Dad suggests a race to the top, Steph's competitive streak kicks in.

0:25:14 > 0:25:19And despite her headache and the boys' headstart, she beats both of them to the halfway point.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25No way.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29They're rewarded with an incredible view.

0:25:29 > 0:25:34This is just fantastic.

0:25:34 > 0:25:39Dave's set his heart on Auckland and he's desperate for his children to share his dream.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42When you look at this, you think...

0:25:42 > 0:25:50I hope everybody makes the right decision, cos this is within our grasp, hopefully.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54And to let it slip through, for whatever reason,

0:25:56 > 0:25:59you wouldn't be able to live with yourself.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01You'd always be saying what if.

0:26:01 > 0:26:06But with boyfriend Dan on her mind, daughter Steph just doesn't know what to do.

0:26:06 > 0:26:13I don't think I'd be able to leave Dan and then if I don't move, I'm going to miss people, as well.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16You can't seem to win on that one.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20But there's ups and downs to everything.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24You've just got to try and choose what's best for you.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27Steph's facing an impossible decision.

0:26:27 > 0:26:32Meanwhile, back at work, Mum's weighing up her own future in Auckland.

0:26:32 > 0:26:36This afternoon, she joins Aroha's session with therapist Ursula.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39We thought we'd just have a look at how you're sitting in your

0:26:39 > 0:26:43wheelchair and see if we can get you in a nice position. OK?

0:26:43 > 0:26:47- Have you got your bottom right to the back of that chair?- Yes.- Yeah.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50Think you have, haven't you, there.

0:26:50 > 0:26:51- Well, done.- That's it.

0:26:51 > 0:26:57Looks good. It feels like it's just about right, cos your chair's right on the back of your legs.

0:26:57 > 0:26:58Am I tickling nearly?

0:26:58 > 0:27:02Can you feel that finger, there? Yeah.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04So I think that chair feels comfortable there.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07It's right underneath your legs.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10With Aroha now sitting comfortably,

0:27:10 > 0:27:13Annabel heads out to the garden to meet Lyndsey for a final chat.

0:27:17 > 0:27:21She's a lovely little girl, Aroha.

0:27:21 > 0:27:24- Yes. She's a character, isn't she? - She is.

0:27:24 > 0:27:28A big part of her decision rests on salary and she's keen to discuss figures.

0:27:28 > 0:27:33Looking at pay, what would be sort of an expected starting salary?

0:27:33 > 0:27:35Pay range goes from 40 to 60.

0:27:35 > 0:27:39Someone of your experience would be at the senior end of that...

0:27:39 > 0:27:41at the 60,000.

0:27:41 > 0:27:47- Yeah. So that would work out to about £27,000.- Yeah. About that.

0:27:47 > 0:27:53- So that would be really quite a good figure to live on, I should expect, definitely.- It is.

0:27:53 > 0:27:58The pay is definitely comparable and there are lifestyle perks, too.

0:27:58 > 0:28:02I can just see myself bringing all my kitegear to work and getting out

0:28:02 > 0:28:06there to do a bit of kitesurfing at lunchtime. Would be wonderful.

0:28:06 > 0:28:11Well, certainly, a lot of the staff go down in the summer, down the steps and swim at lunchtime.

0:28:11 > 0:28:15- You'd fit in very well, here. You really would.- That's lovely.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17- And I know you'd enjoy it as well. - Yeah.

0:28:17 > 0:28:21Annabel's had a great day, testing out work under under.

0:28:21 > 0:28:28Really nice to see how things work over here and how services are set up.

0:28:28 > 0:28:34But, given how much she loves her job at home, will she vote UK or New Zealand for work?

0:28:34 > 0:28:40Having made it to the top of Mount Victoria, the rest of the family are about to find out.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42After today,

0:28:42 > 0:28:48my vote for whether I'd prefer work in the UK or New Zealand, has to be with...

0:28:52 > 0:28:54- UK.- UK.

0:28:54 > 0:28:57- Joking.- No.- No?

0:28:57 > 0:28:59Weird.

0:28:59 > 0:29:04It's such a big move to complicate things by walking into a job

0:29:04 > 0:29:07that is such a contrast to what I'm used to,

0:29:07 > 0:29:11I know that would be probably quite a stresser.

0:29:11 > 0:29:17I'm shocked with the decision Mum made because she's like... all for New Zealand.

0:29:17 > 0:29:20Mum's vote has come as a big surprise.

0:29:20 > 0:29:24What will her dramatic change of heart mean for the family's future?

0:29:27 > 0:29:31Auckland's not known for being a hotspot for nightlife,

0:29:31 > 0:29:36but the city does boast plenty of entertainment opportunities for youngsters.

0:29:36 > 0:29:40Will the prospect of a few good nights out be enough to convince Steph?

0:29:40 > 0:29:43New Zealand may be a small nation down under, but

0:29:43 > 0:29:47when day turns to night, it's certainly not the back of beyond.

0:29:47 > 0:29:51The night life in New Zealand is small but really varied.

0:29:51 > 0:29:55You get everything in such a small area. All the big acts come here.

0:29:55 > 0:29:57I don't feel like we've missed out.

0:29:57 > 0:30:03Even under 18s will find their options varied, from a relaxing dip and flick at a movie pool

0:30:03 > 0:30:06to something more exhilarating at late-night sports centres.

0:30:06 > 0:30:11Just like the UK, you can't buy alcohol here until you're 18,

0:30:11 > 0:30:15so with Steph's 17th birthday approaching, what's the pub and club scene like?

0:30:15 > 0:30:19Auckland is great to go out in. and there's so many different environments.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22You can go to a party scene like this, dancing

0:30:22 > 0:30:24and having a great time or you can head up to

0:30:24 > 0:30:30a quieter suburb and sit in a boothed environment and talk to total strangers on your left or right.

0:30:30 > 0:30:34And, finally, Steph and Jake, you don't need to worry about making new

0:30:34 > 0:30:38friends, as you definitely won't be the only people from out of town.

0:30:38 > 0:30:40Not everyone in Auckland is from Auckland.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43Everyone in Auckland is from elsewhere, just like myself.

0:30:43 > 0:30:48I've only been here two years and I've got one of the widest circles of friends.

0:30:48 > 0:30:52You won't just meet Aucklanders, you'll meet people from everywhere.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58Dave and Annabel Williams, and children Jake and

0:30:58 > 0:31:01Stephanie, are putting life in New Zealand to the test.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04The family were all in agreement about New Zealand property.

0:31:04 > 0:31:07I think it's a nice house. I like it.

0:31:07 > 0:31:09Absolutely stunning.

0:31:09 > 0:31:12Can you just buy this house, please?

0:31:12 > 0:31:15But Mum got cold feet after her day at work.

0:31:15 > 0:31:21To complicate things by walking into a job that is such a contrast to what

0:31:21 > 0:31:24I'm used to, I know that would be probably quite a stresser.

0:31:24 > 0:31:28Daughter Stephanie is warming to Auckland.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32No looking.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35But with boyfriend Dan to think about, she has a lot on her mind.

0:31:35 > 0:31:40I don't think I'd be able to leave Dan. If I don't move, I'm going to miss people, as well.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43You can't seem to win on that one.

0:31:43 > 0:31:48Will messages from loved ones back home test the family's dreams to the limit?

0:31:51 > 0:31:56If a move to New Zealand is going to work for all the Williams family, they've got to embrace

0:31:56 > 0:32:00the lifestyle, but will it live up to their high expectations?

0:32:00 > 0:32:06Annabel and Dave are convinced that the great outdoors of New Zealand is for them and during their

0:32:06 > 0:32:10trial week they intend to make the most of every minute of it.

0:32:10 > 0:32:15But this morning, they're not exactly living the dream.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17It looks cold but it isn't, is it?

0:32:17 > 0:32:19It's really quite warm.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23If that rain wasn't there,

0:32:23 > 0:32:25it'd be lovely kitesurfing.

0:32:25 > 0:32:29- It would.- Yeah. Well, we'll take your word for it, Dave.

0:32:29 > 0:32:34Back at the rental property, the teenage contingent are almost out of bed.

0:32:34 > 0:32:37- The verdict on their parents' behaviour?- I think Mum and Dad are mad.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40I certainly wouldn't go out there in this weather.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42Get wet.

0:32:42 > 0:32:46But it takes more than a bit of rain to put the Williams off.

0:32:46 > 0:32:50And, despite the weather, there's an active day planned for all the family.

0:32:50 > 0:32:55First, a race around a local mountain biking park.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57Annabel and Dave are ready for anything

0:32:57 > 0:33:02but as the rain tips down, their children are feeling reluctant.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05I'm going to be covered in mud.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07It's so not going to be good.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10Jake is quietly confident, though.

0:33:10 > 0:33:13This is going to be pretty good,

0:33:13 > 0:33:18because I'm much better than all my family at biking.

0:33:18 > 0:33:20So he thinks.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22Really. We'll soon see.

0:33:22 > 0:33:27New Zealand's wide-ranging landscape makes it a great place for mountain biking.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32Excellent activity. Absolutely brilliant.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34It doesn't matter if it's a day like today.

0:33:34 > 0:33:39It makes it more fun, really, with the puddles and getting covered in mud.

0:33:41 > 0:33:48- Jake is having a ball.- This is brilliant because it's something I like and something Steph detests.

0:33:48 > 0:33:54Steph is far from convinced and perhaps she's identified the problem.

0:33:54 > 0:33:58If it was something where you didn't have to pedal, it'd be fine.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01Dad has his own theory.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04There's no clip for any hair straighteners either.

0:34:07 > 0:34:11Tearing through muddy puddles has left them cold and wet.

0:34:11 > 0:34:19What better way for the family to warm up than a trip to a local hot springs, in Waiwera.

0:34:19 > 0:34:23A dip in the warm mineral waters is a great way to get the circulation

0:34:23 > 0:34:26going and it puts a smile on Steph's face.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30Biking was wet and muddy and horrible.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33I've been cold ever since.

0:34:33 > 0:34:35But it's nice and warm, here.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38- Bit happier now then?- Yeah.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42But, wherever Steph goes this week, there's somebody missing.

0:34:42 > 0:34:44Dan's on my mind a lot.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47I miss, I don't know, the stupid little things he does,

0:34:47 > 0:34:49that make me laugh.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55Just seeing him and talking to him.

0:34:57 > 0:35:02Meanwhile, Mum and Dad are literally throwing themselves into the Auckland way of life.

0:35:05 > 0:35:07It's time for the family to vote on lifestyle.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10Will it be the UK or New Zealand?

0:35:10 > 0:35:11On the count of three.

0:35:12 > 0:35:13One.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16Two.

0:35:17 > 0:35:18Three.

0:35:18 > 0:35:19New Zealand.

0:35:19 > 0:35:25Steph's consistent vote for New Zealand is a big surprise to her parents.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28At the house, her priorities shift to boyfriend Dan.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32- Hiya.- "All right, baby?"

0:35:32 > 0:35:35- Yeah. OK.- "Yeah. You?"

0:35:35 > 0:35:38- Yeah. Not bad.- "I miss ya."

0:35:38 > 0:35:42I miss you, too. You'd like it here. It's like,

0:35:42 > 0:35:45wherever you are, you're 20 minutes away from a beach.

0:35:45 > 0:35:50- "Amazing. I wish I was there." - I wish you was here.

0:35:52 > 0:35:54If I did move, would you come over?

0:35:56 > 0:35:58"Hell, yeah."

0:35:58 > 0:35:59"Yeah. Yeah. Definitely."

0:35:59 > 0:36:05Come over on a six-month working visa and then see if you can get citizenship or something.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09Right, well, I've got to go now.

0:36:09 > 0:36:10"All right then, baby."

0:36:10 > 0:36:14OK, but I'll ring you later and text you.

0:36:14 > 0:36:16- "Love you, baby."- I love you, too.

0:36:16 > 0:36:18- Bye bye.- "(HE KISSES)"

0:36:23 > 0:36:27Is this another sign that Stephanie's wavering in her resolve not to come?

0:36:31 > 0:36:37To help the Williams family make up their minds once and for all about emigrating, we've put together some

0:36:37 > 0:36:41messages from friends and family, including Steph's boyfriend Dan.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47Right, David.

0:36:47 > 0:36:50This is your sister here...

0:36:50 > 0:36:52or your surrogate mum.

0:36:53 > 0:36:56I wish you all the best. I really do.

0:36:59 > 0:37:04Hi, baby. Don't go running off with any New Zealand guys,

0:37:04 > 0:37:07and all that cos I'm still waiting. I'm missing you.

0:37:09 > 0:37:11Dave and Annabel will always be a team.

0:37:11 > 0:37:13They've always worked together.

0:37:13 > 0:37:21They're an absolutely ideal example of a couple that works as one.

0:37:23 > 0:37:27Jake's been really good to grow up with and we've had a lot of fun with everybody.

0:37:27 > 0:37:31And if he does move to New Zealand, then it's going to be a shame cos

0:37:31 > 0:37:34I'll miss like seeing him around.

0:37:34 > 0:37:39Jake, he's so happy go lucky, so laid back, he'll cruise along.

0:37:39 > 0:37:43He's a bright boy, a gifted boy and he'll do well...

0:37:43 > 0:37:46whatever he decides to do.

0:37:46 > 0:37:50I've told her, do whatever she thinks is best.

0:37:50 > 0:37:54It's like... a hard thing to say cos

0:37:54 > 0:37:58it's like it could be a life-changing thing which is for the better for her,

0:37:58 > 0:38:01but, at the end of the day, I'd hate to see her go.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06I don't think he realises

0:38:06 > 0:38:10how much I will miss him and how much I do love him...

0:38:11 > 0:38:14but I do, from the bottom of my heart.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21It will be hard...

0:38:25 > 0:38:31but as long as we can see them off in a cheerful way,

0:38:31 > 0:38:33rather than be upset.

0:38:37 > 0:38:40I just wish you all the best,

0:38:40 > 0:38:43from the bottom of my heart, I really do.

0:38:50 > 0:38:53It's what I would have expected.

0:38:53 > 0:38:56I think, for my mum's sake, I know that she wouldn't...

0:38:58 > 0:39:00she wouldn't do the guilt trip thing, at all.

0:39:00 > 0:39:02I know our Rita would miss me,

0:39:04 > 0:39:09but I've lived overseas before

0:39:09 > 0:39:15and the emotional thing doesn't really affect me as much as yourself.

0:39:15 > 0:39:18It's a different relationship for me...

0:39:18 > 0:39:21because, you know, obviously, it's my mum.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24Steph's not the only person feeling the distance.

0:39:24 > 0:39:30Now, Annabel and Dave are divided over leaving loved ones behind.

0:39:30 > 0:39:36As the week draws to a close, can they let go of emotional ties and follow their dream?

0:39:39 > 0:39:44The Williams family from Scunthorpe came to New Zealand in search of a better way of life.

0:39:44 > 0:39:46Auckland property left them feeling positive.

0:39:46 > 0:39:51Having a look round and there's some real gems out there, isn't there?

0:39:51 > 0:39:56- Yeah.- Well, within our price bracket, so we're quite optimistic on that.

0:39:56 > 0:40:01Very optimistic really that we'll get something that really fits the picture

0:40:01 > 0:40:05that we've got in our heads, without breaking the bank.

0:40:05 > 0:40:09A day at work wasn't enough to make up Annabel's mind.

0:40:09 > 0:40:15Although the place of work I went to wasn't really quite right for me,

0:40:15 > 0:40:20there are lots of bonuses that I can see to working over here.

0:40:20 > 0:40:25- Son Jake has been quietly confident about a new life down under from the start.- I've enjoyed it.

0:40:25 > 0:40:31It's been a good week. There's been no bad points about the week that I can think of, really.

0:40:31 > 0:40:35Daughter Steph's glad she made the trip to Auckland.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37It has been worth coming to see the place...

0:40:37 > 0:40:40definitely, cos you don't know until you see it.

0:40:40 > 0:40:46But with the weight of family expectation on her shoulders, she's been struggling to make up her mind.

0:40:46 > 0:40:50Been a pretty stressful week, as well, knowing that I've got to have

0:40:50 > 0:40:55a decision made, as such, towards the end. It's been quite stressful.

0:40:55 > 0:41:00I've felt a bit like I'm pressured into making my decision.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04But for Mum and Dad, her choice is all that matters.

0:41:04 > 0:41:08It's been a huge source of anxiety, really,

0:41:08 > 0:41:12and over quite a long period of time I've just been trying to sort

0:41:12 > 0:41:18of rationalise it and make things feel OK if she doesn't come over.

0:41:18 > 0:41:26All we can do, really, is hope she makes the right decision and everything comes off. Yeah?

0:41:26 > 0:41:27Yeah.

0:41:27 > 0:41:29It's crunch time.

0:41:29 > 0:41:33The family must make up their mind in a much-anticipated final vote.

0:41:33 > 0:41:39Is their future together in the UK or will they commit to a new start down under?

0:41:39 > 0:41:41On the count of three. Are you ready?

0:41:41 > 0:41:45One. Two. Three.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51New Zealand.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56What is that?

0:41:56 > 0:41:58I knew you'd do that.

0:41:58 > 0:42:00What does this mean?

0:42:00 > 0:42:02That I'm undecided.

0:42:02 > 0:42:10I know it's hard, Steph, but a yes or a no would be a more adult decision.

0:42:10 > 0:42:12Do you want a no then?

0:42:12 > 0:42:15What do you want me to say? I don't know.

0:42:17 > 0:42:19Laugh at me, then.

0:42:24 > 0:42:29- In some respects, it's no great surprise.- It's no surprise. - It's no great surprise.

0:42:29 > 0:42:30We expected it.

0:42:30 > 0:42:36- Yeah.- I think we've got a hell of a lot more talking to do...

0:42:36 > 0:42:40- Yeah.- ..to try and drum out a plan.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42- Yeah.- A feasible plan.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45Come on, then.

0:42:45 > 0:42:50Dave, Annabel and Jake were hopeful that Auckland had won Steph over,

0:42:50 > 0:42:57but, ultimately, the pressure of making such a life-changing decision was just too much for her.

0:42:58 > 0:43:02Despite some disappointment for Annabel on the work front, she

0:43:02 > 0:43:07feels strongly that New Zealand is the best place for the whole family.

0:43:07 > 0:43:14But Steph remains unconvinced, with the lure of loved ones, especially Dan, proving too hard to resist.

0:43:14 > 0:43:19For now, the Williams family are split whether to move where they're Wanted Down Under.
