0:00:02 > 0:00:06Welcome to Wanted Down Under,
0:00:06 > 0:00:09the show that catapults a British family
0:00:09 > 0:00:15right across to the other side of the world to help them make the biggest decision of their life -
0:00:15 > 0:00:18whether to stay in the UK or to move to New Zealand.
0:00:19 > 0:00:25Teachers Vanessa and Phil Taylor have been thinking about going to New Zealand
0:00:25 > 0:00:28for a better life for their family for some years.
0:00:28 > 0:00:33As a teacher in the UK, your work life intrudes into your home life.
0:00:33 > 0:00:37The work-life balance is the key factor in us looking to move to New Zealand.
0:00:37 > 0:00:42But they have three teenage children and not all of them want to go.
0:00:44 > 0:00:48I don't think it's for me. There's not much around that I can do.
0:00:48 > 0:00:53I think I'd miss my friends and family and I don't really like it here.
0:00:53 > 0:00:58It's a massive decision because I've got the option to stay behind and not go.
0:00:58 > 0:01:01Will their dream be shattered
0:01:01 > 0:01:04when their home is valued at a rock-bottom price?
0:01:04 > 0:01:07That is ridiculous, I have to say.
0:01:07 > 0:01:11I would rather stay in the UK, simple as that.
0:01:11 > 0:01:14And all this will have been for nothing.
0:01:14 > 0:01:19The Taylors have some tough choices ahead of them. What will they decide?
0:01:43 > 0:01:48With its magnificent landscape and small population of only four million,
0:01:48 > 0:01:54New Zealand is many people's idea of the perfect place to get away from it all.
0:01:54 > 0:02:00To apply to live in New Zealand as a skilled migrant, you must be between the ages of 20 and 55
0:02:00 > 0:02:06and be on the skills shortage list, but a move down under is never straightforward.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09We've given another British family the opportunity
0:02:09 > 0:02:11to spend a week down under
0:02:11 > 0:02:14to see if it's all they've dreamt it would be.
0:02:14 > 0:02:19After that, they'll have to make a decision one way or the other -
0:02:19 > 0:02:22to stay in the UK or to move to New Zealand.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27Vanessa and Phil Taylor live in Acklam in Middlesbrough
0:02:27 > 0:02:31with their teenage children Liam, Ryan and Megan
0:02:31 > 0:02:36and they're about to find out what life is really like in New Zealand.
0:02:36 > 0:02:41Teachers Vanessa and Phil have had enough of the rat race in the UK.
0:02:41 > 0:02:46They want a better work-life balance and more opportunities for their children's future.
0:02:46 > 0:02:52When all comes to all, it's about lifestyle, and being a teacher is very busy, very time-consuming.
0:02:53 > 0:03:00It's a lifestyle issue that we seemed to be working and we didn't have a great deal of time for ourselves.
0:03:00 > 0:03:04We were getting pretty dismayed with things that were going on in the UK
0:03:04 > 0:03:09and that's what instigated the fact that we wanted to move away.
0:03:09 > 0:03:13New Zealand with its open spaces seemed like the ideal place to go.
0:03:13 > 0:03:18For all of us, especially the kids in the future.
0:03:18 > 0:03:24Ryan and sister Megan think they're sold on New Zealand's outdoor lifestyle.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27I was quite excited at first because my immediate reaction,
0:03:27 > 0:03:31I put a connection between New Zealand and New Zealand rugby team.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35I really love rugby, so it just kind of clicked straight away.
0:03:35 > 0:03:37I hated it to start with.
0:03:37 > 0:03:43I didn't know anything about New Zealand being like horse countryside. I had no idea.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46I've researched about horses and stuff over there
0:03:46 > 0:03:52and Mum and Dad have said I might be able to get a horse over there, so I'm feeling happy with that.
0:03:53 > 0:03:59But 17-year-old Liam doesn't want to leave behind his friends and his work
0:03:59 > 0:04:01with the St John Ambulance Service.
0:04:01 > 0:04:08I'm 99.9% sure I won't go. I think I'm going to be the hardest one to convince to go to New Zealand.
0:04:08 > 0:04:13It's going to be a bigger decision for me than it is for Megan or Ryan or my mum and dad.
0:04:14 > 0:04:21When it boils down to it, I think it'll be whether I'm prepared to leave my family to stay here
0:04:21 > 0:04:27because I think they'll all decide to go in the end, but I don't see what's in it for me.
0:04:28 > 0:04:32PHIL: Liam doesn't really want to leave his friends
0:04:32 > 0:04:37which is a shame because I think the opportunities that New Zealand can offer Liam
0:04:37 > 0:04:41will be probably more beneficial than all of the rest of us.
0:04:41 > 0:04:45Hopefully, he can see the potential that that lifestyle can offer him.
0:04:45 > 0:04:49I'm really hoping that it does convince him
0:04:49 > 0:04:53because if it doesn't, then, you know, what is there?
0:04:53 > 0:04:56He'll be staying here and we'll be 12,000 miles away.
0:04:56 > 0:05:03Vanessa would also be leaving behind her grandma. The thought of abandoning her is unbearable.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06Since my mum died when I was 19...
0:05:07 > 0:05:11My grandma sort of took her place.
0:05:13 > 0:05:17She's just been very supportive of everything,
0:05:17 > 0:05:24taking over the role, I suppose, of what my mum would have done if she was here.
0:05:26 > 0:05:30She doesn't think she'd be able to cope with the long flight,
0:05:30 > 0:05:33so I know that she won't be able to come over.
0:05:33 > 0:05:38It will be difficult, but it's something that I'm prepared to do.
0:05:40 > 0:05:47With such strong emotional ties back in the UK, it's clearly not going to be an easy decision.
0:05:51 > 0:05:55We're sending the Taylors to the vibrant city of Auckland
0:05:55 > 0:05:58for a chance to experience life down under.
0:05:58 > 0:06:05Auckland is situated at the top of New Zealand's North Island and is known as the City of Sails.
0:06:05 > 0:06:09It's the perfect base to explore the island.
0:06:09 > 0:06:13The Taylors reckon their housing budget is £235,000,
0:06:13 > 0:06:19so they should be able to find a suitable property if they shop around.
0:06:19 > 0:06:23We've found three possible lifestyles for our family,
0:06:23 > 0:06:29each one offering a brand-new way of life for them to try on their budget,
0:06:29 > 0:06:32but which one will be the most suitable?
0:06:32 > 0:06:38Living in the city would be a world away from the Taylors' life back in Middlesbrough
0:06:38 > 0:06:43and would provide them with easy access to schools, colleges and sports clubs.
0:06:43 > 0:06:47In Auckland, property is plentiful from high-rise living to townhouses,
0:06:47 > 0:06:53but these come at a premium, especially if you want a five-bedroomed house like this
0:06:53 > 0:06:57which could cost over £500,000, too expensive for the Taylors.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01But there are more affordable homes in the suburbs
0:07:01 > 0:07:05and it should only be a 15-minute commute to work in the city.
0:07:05 > 0:07:11So, very different from their life in the UK, but what about the second option?
0:07:11 > 0:07:17Country life is what the Taylors are longing for and would be very different to their life back home.
0:07:17 > 0:07:22Close to beautiful parks and wildlife, the family would have plenty to explore.
0:07:22 > 0:07:26Bigger properties with land are more affordable in the country
0:07:26 > 0:07:30and could give them both the space and land for horses that they crave.
0:07:30 > 0:07:36Also, with both Vanessa and Phil being teachers, they have some flexibility as to where they work.
0:07:36 > 0:07:42With good transport links to schools in the city centre, the children can have the best of both worlds.
0:07:42 > 0:07:47That all looks very inviting, but what about the third option?
0:07:48 > 0:07:51Coastal living could be ideal.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55The Taylors are looking to relax and spend time together as a family,
0:07:55 > 0:08:01so the coast would provide the more laid-back lifestyle they're looking for in New Zealand.
0:08:01 > 0:08:05There are great houses on the coast, but those sea views don't come cheap
0:08:05 > 0:08:08and extra land for horses could double the cost.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11Vanessa and Phil could commute easily to work
0:08:11 > 0:08:15and the children would enjoy going to the beach after school.
0:08:15 > 0:08:20So three very different options there, all of them life-changing.
0:08:20 > 0:08:23So where did we decide to send the Taylors?
0:08:26 > 0:08:31We decided that the rural option is the most suitable for the family.
0:08:31 > 0:08:36It will provide them with a good mix of country living
0:08:36 > 0:08:40and opportunities to find spacious family houses within their budget.
0:08:40 > 0:08:45For their trial week, we've lined up a teaching job for Vanessa.
0:08:45 > 0:08:50And get some ideas from you. I won't just stand here telling you. I'd like input from you as well.
0:08:50 > 0:08:54They'll sample housing options in the west of Auckland.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57- You didn't get lost?- Sort of.
0:08:57 > 0:09:01- How are you going? - Better for finding the place!
0:09:01 > 0:09:05They'll get a taste of New Zealand life.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09- What did you think of that? - Loved it.- You loved it?
0:09:09 > 0:09:15But they have a tough week ahead of them as they try to make the biggest decision of their lives.
0:09:15 > 0:09:20I would want them not to worry about what's going on back here. This will always be home.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23But it doesn't have to always be THEIR home.
0:09:31 > 0:09:35The Taylors are finally making the trip they've dreamt of for years.
0:09:35 > 0:09:41The journey takes them 12,000 miles as they cross three continents from Middlesbrough to New Zealand.
0:09:41 > 0:09:4632 hours later, they reach Auckland, jet-lagged and tired.
0:09:48 > 0:09:53I thought the flight was pretty awful, actually, so extremely tired.
0:09:53 > 0:09:59But it has made me realise that I don't think there's any way that my grandma would be doing that flight.
0:09:59 > 0:10:04Not unless she can afford first-class which I don't think she will.
0:10:04 > 0:10:08Now I'm here, I just want to get out and go somewhere.
0:10:08 > 0:10:12I just can't wait to just find out really what the place is all about.
0:10:12 > 0:10:17Let's see what New Zealand has got in store for them.
0:10:17 > 0:10:22It's the first time any of the Taylors have ever been down under.
0:10:22 > 0:10:27They'll be staying in the rural area of Piha in West Auckland
0:10:27 > 0:10:30which should suit Megan's dream of being near horses.
0:10:30 > 0:10:37The house is classic Piha living - open-plan and designed to capture the ultimate use of space and light.
0:10:37 > 0:10:39So what will they make of it?
0:10:39 > 0:10:45- Lovely and big, the rooms. Good first impression.- They're obviously keen on the barbecues as well.
0:10:45 > 0:10:51Well, you'd be into barbecues too if this was the view from your veranda.
0:10:53 > 0:10:55Look at that!
0:10:55 > 0:10:58How close are we!
0:10:58 > 0:11:00It's amazing, isn't it?
0:11:00 > 0:11:07So considering this is your first hour in New Zealand, it's not going too badly then, is it?
0:11:07 > 0:11:13- No. But I'm sure I'll find something I dislike in a second. - Oh, I'm sure you will.
0:11:14 > 0:11:20While the others soak in their surroundings, Megan's beginning to feel unsure.
0:11:20 > 0:11:26I didn't expect it to be this much plant life. I thought I'd see more animals. All I've seen is sheep.
0:11:26 > 0:11:33The beach looks nice and the view and the house is nice, but I haven't seen any horses.
0:11:33 > 0:11:39That's quite bad, considering that's what I wanted to do here.
0:11:40 > 0:11:46They all agree it's a stunning place, but can they see themselves living here?
0:11:46 > 0:11:51I mean, just at this moment now, you can't beat where we are now.
0:11:51 > 0:11:56But how long will it take for the novelty to wear off? That's the thing.
0:11:56 > 0:12:02There's been many places where I've been on holiday and thought, "I like this, but I couldn't live there."
0:12:02 > 0:12:06The danger is that you treat this like a holiday.
0:12:06 > 0:12:11If you decide to come for real, that's when it's going to make the difference.
0:12:11 > 0:12:17And if the family do decide to come, son Liam may choose to stay in the UK.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20I think it will definitely be a difficult one
0:12:20 > 0:12:26because if we do decide to come here and Liam decides he's not coming,
0:12:26 > 0:12:32then it means that he's on the other side of the world and we're over here without him.
0:12:32 > 0:12:38Well, it's not really a question cos I don't particularly like this place. I don't like Piha.
0:12:38 > 0:12:43- Why?- I just don't. The views are the only good thing about it, I think.
0:12:43 > 0:12:47- It's too quiet.- So you can make a judgment on a place,
0:12:47 > 0:12:53even though the only place you've been in that place is here cos you fell asleep on the car ride here.
0:12:53 > 0:12:57I went 24 hours on a plane. I'm knackered. Leave me alone.
0:12:57 > 0:13:01With tensions high, this could be a difficult week.
0:13:05 > 0:13:11Back in the UK, the Taylors live in a five-bedroomed detached house which they love.
0:13:11 > 0:13:16If they make the move to New Zealand, they'd want something of similar size.
0:13:16 > 0:13:22It's on the market already for £235,000 and if they can get that asking price,
0:13:22 > 0:13:27they'd have £100,000 in equity to put towards the New Zealand home,
0:13:27 > 0:13:33but property near Auckland is expensive and, with lower wages, could they afford that dream home?
0:13:33 > 0:13:36Property further out of town is cheaper,
0:13:36 > 0:13:40so they start their search in the Waitakere area of West Auckland.
0:13:40 > 0:13:46- Hi.- Hiya.- I'm Kathleen.- I'm Phil. - How are you?- Not too bad. - You didn't get lost?- Sort of.
0:13:46 > 0:13:50- How are you going? I'm Kathleen. - Better for finding the place!
0:13:51 > 0:13:57Property one is a four-bedroomed detached house, recently re-decorated by its owner
0:13:57 > 0:14:01with a definite steer towards one end of the colour palette.
0:14:01 > 0:14:04What do you think of the colour?
0:14:04 > 0:14:10- There's a little figure that was called Tinky Winky and I would call this Tinky Winky.- Teletubbies!
0:14:10 > 0:14:13- Tinky Winky...- Was purple.- Yeah.
0:14:13 > 0:14:15Well, this is aubergine.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18# Purple rain, purple... #
0:14:18 > 0:14:25- Ah, aubergine! That's all right, then.- There's a lot of it everywhere else as well.- Yes, there is.
0:14:26 > 0:14:31Well, come on. Let's have a look through the living areas.
0:14:31 > 0:14:33Neutral colours.
0:14:33 > 0:14:35Apart from our rather purple wall.
0:14:35 > 0:14:38# In the purple rain... #
0:14:38 > 0:14:43- Any non-purple selling points you'd like to share? - It's a beautiful home.
0:14:43 > 0:14:50It's not too far from anywhere. One of the added touches is not only the bush surround,
0:14:50 > 0:14:55but magnificent views. They're very, very pleasant.
0:14:55 > 0:15:01- Come on through to the bedrooms. - They're not huge, but there's a bedroom for everybody.
0:15:01 > 0:15:04Pick them now by all means!
0:15:05 > 0:15:10It's quite light and airy. I think it's not too bad.
0:15:12 > 0:15:17Now, obviously, for Mum and Dad. Got your own patio area.
0:15:17 > 0:15:21A nice cool breeze runs through here in the summer.
0:15:21 > 0:15:24It's really pleasant.
0:15:24 > 0:15:26Yeah, I like it.
0:15:26 > 0:15:31Well, they like bits of the house, but they're hardly bowled over by Property One.
0:15:31 > 0:15:35The big question is can they afford to be picky?
0:15:35 > 0:15:40- So how much is it, then? - It's on the market for 539,000.
0:15:40 > 0:15:47Obviously, the vendor will be negotiable. To what point we don't know at this stage.
0:15:47 > 0:15:53Well, that's not too bad providing they can sell their house in the UK for the asking price.
0:15:53 > 0:16:01- Then their mortgage would be about the same. But what do they think about it?- I like the location.
0:16:01 > 0:16:05I mean, the views, really, are great.
0:16:05 > 0:16:10But I'm not too keen on the inside of it, I have to say.
0:16:10 > 0:16:15The bedrooms are quite small. For five, it's not big enough.
0:16:15 > 0:16:20The children love the style of their spacious rental,
0:16:20 > 0:16:23but do they like this more modest home?
0:16:23 > 0:16:30It's not for me. There's not much around to do apart from hang around the house.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33This just doesn't fit the bill, really.
0:16:33 > 0:16:40If the other properties are like in the Piha area, you might be able to convince me,
0:16:40 > 0:16:45but at the moment I still prefer England for houses.
0:16:45 > 0:16:51Oh, no. Househunting definitely isn't convincing Liam that this move is a good idea,
0:16:51 > 0:16:57but for their budget they might just struggle to fulfil their aspirations.
0:16:57 > 0:17:03So we've taken them to the village of Riverhead to look at a do-up - Kiwi-speak for rundown.
0:17:05 > 0:17:09Don't worry about shoes. You can leave them on.
0:17:09 > 0:17:14This is a do-up. You will appreciate there's quite a bit of work to do.
0:17:14 > 0:17:19The bathrooms need to be done up. It's structurally sound.
0:17:19 > 0:17:24It's fine, but on presentation you'd need to do some work.
0:17:24 > 0:17:29So how much do you expect this property to realise on the market?
0:17:29 > 0:17:33He would look at something in the region of 500. In the 500s.
0:17:33 > 0:17:38Wow. That's a big price tag with the work that needs doing,
0:17:38 > 0:17:44but if they do most of it themselves, it's still got a good chance of coming in on budget.
0:17:44 > 0:17:50This is a rumpus area. Good for teenagers to...
0:17:50 > 0:17:52use this on a rainy day.
0:17:52 > 0:17:55Is this a damp smell I'm smelling?
0:17:55 > 0:18:00- Er...- What is it?- There is a bit of a damp smell in here.
0:18:00 > 0:18:07- You said it was structurally sound, but there's some damp. - It's a concrete building.
0:18:07 > 0:18:13Obviously the carpet and all of the drapes and things like that have a fair bit of moisture.
0:18:13 > 0:18:17I would think all that needs to be changed.
0:18:17 > 0:18:24Megan doesn't seem impressed, but luckily Phil can see past the end of his nose.
0:18:24 > 0:18:28I'm thinking what you'd have to do. Doesn't particularly bother me.
0:18:28 > 0:18:34You could plaster it, maybe do the ceilings, but none of that would put me off.
0:18:34 > 0:18:40- You're a brave man, Mr Taylor! - It looks to me as though it's had no modernisation whatsoever.
0:18:41 > 0:18:45Maybe the upstairs will be more up-to-date.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48- This is slightly better!- It is.
0:18:48 > 0:18:53This is basically the living area. The bedrooms are at this level.
0:18:53 > 0:18:57The lounge here extends out into the open deck.
0:18:57 > 0:19:03- Nice to sit out there in the evening sun.- It doesn't look very safe out there.
0:19:03 > 0:19:09- They'll need to do a lot of work before they enjoy those views. - I'm not overly keen to come out.
0:19:09 > 0:19:13There is extensive work to do to actually make it safe.
0:19:13 > 0:19:19- And the list goes on. - There's obviously been a leak at some point.- Oh, yeah, yeah.
0:19:19 > 0:19:25- I see that, yes.- The roof would obviously need attention as well. That's more money.
0:19:25 > 0:19:29I'd recommend getting a building inspector in.
0:19:29 > 0:19:36- Get all aspects of it looked at thoroughly.- Hang on! I thought you said it was structurally sound.
0:19:36 > 0:19:39- Money well spent!- It would be.
0:19:39 > 0:19:45Basically, you've got an outer shell and I would be tempted...
0:19:45 > 0:19:51It's such a poor layout inside that I would take all of the interior walls out.
0:19:51 > 0:19:58Anything that wasn't load-bearing. And start from scratch. I don't think there's much you can save.
0:19:58 > 0:20:04As you said, it's just a shell. Little more than the shell.
0:20:04 > 0:20:10- I really don't like it.- Right. I think we're agreed that the Taylors aren't into Property Two,
0:20:10 > 0:20:16but Ryan's come up with a plan to build their own house and he's going to design it.
0:20:16 > 0:20:22He goes to university to become an architect. You start the building and become a builder.
0:20:22 > 0:20:26I'm not going into partnership with you.
0:20:26 > 0:20:30I'll be the MD. You two can work for me.
0:20:30 > 0:20:32I'll be the interior designer.
0:20:32 > 0:20:35Right, that's it. I'm out.
0:20:35 > 0:20:43It's good to see they aren't too put off by Property Two, but what do they really make of it?
0:20:43 > 0:20:47It's a good size house and a reasonable plot of land,
0:20:47 > 0:20:52but the interior layout is a little bit ad hoc, put together over time.
0:20:52 > 0:20:57It was built in the '70s. It's been lived in since the '70s.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00And it's still stuck in the '70s.
0:21:02 > 0:21:09Right. Let's hope that Property Three can take the Taylors into the 21st century. It's further out,
0:21:09 > 0:21:13but it may just tick all the boxes
0:21:13 > 0:21:18with stunning views over the harbour and a large plot of land.
0:21:18 > 0:21:23- Phil, is it?- Yeah.- I'm Bill.- Pleased to meet you.- Vanessa?- Hello.
0:21:23 > 0:21:28- Do you want to go through the house first and then the land?- Yeah.
0:21:28 > 0:21:35- After damp and dark Property Two, this is a breath of fresh air. - This is quite nice, isn't it?
0:21:35 > 0:21:40- Yeah. Very nice. - That's the boundary fence there.
0:21:40 > 0:21:46You've got three paddocks here. Two small ones and up to the road there is a larger paddock.
0:21:46 > 0:21:52- So that and that...?- It all belongs to this.- Not the first fence? - You have two and a half acres.
0:21:52 > 0:21:56That's amazing! It's all they've ever dreamt of.
0:21:56 > 0:22:01If they could afford this house, Megan could keep a horse at home.
0:22:01 > 0:22:06- This has got to be out of our price range.- Four bedrooms, 2.5 acres.
0:22:06 > 0:22:08Asking price of 699.
0:22:08 > 0:22:10Sold!
0:22:10 > 0:22:12Fine, sold!
0:22:12 > 0:22:15- I like it. Very good.- Yeah?
0:22:15 > 0:22:21Another 20 minutes drops the price considerably. In town, it would be another 100,000 more.
0:22:21 > 0:22:2520 minutes travelling time makes it a bit cheaper.
0:22:25 > 0:22:30I found two rooms that could possibly be mine. Both amazing!
0:22:30 > 0:22:34Hopefully one's next door! No, this one and that one.
0:22:34 > 0:22:40It's great to see Megan so enthused. I hope they won't be squabbling over the rooms.
0:22:40 > 0:22:42That's also my room.
0:22:44 > 0:22:47- Bathroom.- Ooh, I say.
0:22:47 > 0:22:53This is the main bedroom with its en suite. Three-piece en suite.
0:22:53 > 0:23:01- It's mine!- Don't be so sure, Megan. You might get the smallest room. - This is just wrong.
0:23:01 > 0:23:06- It's just wrong. - This is a bedroom?- Or a study.
0:23:06 > 0:23:12- You could get a single bed in here. Just.- Yeah, it's a bit small, isn't it, this one?
0:23:12 > 0:23:17There is another room in the garage that might do very well.
0:23:17 > 0:23:22The rear half of the garage is being converted into a fifth bedroom.
0:23:22 > 0:23:28- I'll have this. My horse can go in the corner, my bedroom here... - It'll be quiet in there.
0:23:28 > 0:23:31This house could be just right.
0:23:31 > 0:23:36Meanwhile, the boys waste no time dreaming about the great outdoors.
0:23:36 > 0:23:39It's a massive amount of land.
0:23:39 > 0:23:45I'm sure you could make a bit flat enough for a set of rugby posts to practise your kicking on.
0:23:45 > 0:23:48Or is that wishful thinking?
0:23:49 > 0:23:54That property was far superior to the other two.
0:23:54 > 0:23:57We're a bit happier now.
0:23:57 > 0:24:04- That was pretty much perfect. - This is much more the kind of thing that we had in mind.
0:24:04 > 0:24:12When you couple that with the view from the living room, it's pretty spectacular. Very nice.
0:24:12 > 0:24:16They've found their perfect home, but it's out of their budget.
0:24:16 > 0:24:20By how much depends on what they'll make on their UK house,
0:24:20 > 0:24:24but for now how would they vote on property?
0:24:24 > 0:24:30Living on an estate in Middlesbrough with four or five designs of house that are the same,
0:24:30 > 0:24:33I prefer the individuality here.
0:24:33 > 0:24:38The New Zealand houses just pip the UK, so I'll choose New Zealand.
0:24:38 > 0:24:42My vote's going to have to be for New Zealand.
0:24:42 > 0:24:49- New Zealand is my vote.- Finally, with Liam adamant that New Zealand is not for him, how would he vote?
0:24:49 > 0:24:54Because I'm an outrageous kind of guy, I'm going to go for... New Zealand.
0:24:54 > 0:25:00But if all they could afford was Property One, would they still be so sure?
0:25:03 > 0:25:08Well, it's good to see the Taylors could all agree on something.
0:25:08 > 0:25:14Now it's up to Vanessa to find work to finance the new lifestyle and a new mortgage.
0:25:14 > 0:25:21Back in the UK, Vanessa's been teaching food technology at secondary school for four years.
0:25:21 > 0:25:27She earns around £30,000, but work often involves long hours and less time with her family.
0:25:27 > 0:25:34It's time to find work to finance the dream home and lifestyle that she craves in New Zealand.
0:25:34 > 0:25:39I'm going to Balmoral School to teach a class of Year Sevens.
0:25:40 > 0:25:45I'm a little bit nervous about it, which is probably a good thing.
0:25:45 > 0:25:49I've ran through lots of things in my head, what it will be like.
0:25:49 > 0:25:54I'm looking forward to it and think it'll be quite a good experience.
0:25:54 > 0:26:00This is what I've been planning, so I'll love it or hate it. Hopefully, I'll love it!
0:26:03 > 0:26:09She's arranged to meet the school's principal, Malcolm Milner. He has plenty of experience employing Brits
0:26:09 > 0:26:13and is happy for Vanessa to get straight to work.
0:26:13 > 0:26:18- I'll leave you here. All the best. Have a good afternoon.- Bye.
0:26:18 > 0:26:22Now this term you've been working on creating a product.
0:26:22 > 0:26:29The brief also asks you to design the packaging and a packaging label.
0:26:29 > 0:26:34Fortunately for us, we have an expert, Mrs Taylor.
0:26:34 > 0:26:40She's going to work with you and help you design your packaging and packaging labels.
0:26:41 > 0:26:48Right, so I'm going to be just briefly giving you a quick overlook at food packaging and labelling
0:26:48 > 0:26:51and how it happens in the UK.
0:26:51 > 0:26:55I don't know everything about New Zealand yet.
0:26:55 > 0:27:00I'm just going to go over a few quick things and get some ideas from you as well.
0:27:00 > 0:27:06It's not just me standing here telling you. I'd like a lot of input from you as well.
0:27:11 > 0:27:18Across the town of Muriwai, the rest of the family do research into the surf lifestyle.
0:27:18 > 0:27:24- Guys, keen on a bit of surfing? - Definitely. - Ever done any surfing before- No.
0:27:24 > 0:27:30- Perfect. I expect you all standing and riding in one lesson. - Great expectations!
0:27:30 > 0:27:34Don't worry, Megan. The girls always do best.
0:27:42 > 0:27:47We've got to be in the middle of the surfboard, on the sweet spot.
0:27:47 > 0:27:51Too far forward and it nosedives. Too far back, the handbrake's on.
0:27:51 > 0:27:58When the wave's about two surfboard lengths behind us, we start to paddle. Here it comes!
0:27:58 > 0:28:03As soon as I feel the wave push me along, I put my hands underneath.
0:28:03 > 0:28:06One, keep weight forward on the arms.
0:28:06 > 0:28:09Two, back foot in position. Three, front foot in position.
0:28:09 > 0:28:14The more you pull that back leg up, the easier it is. Looking good.
0:28:14 > 0:28:16Megan, it's on.
0:28:22 > 0:28:27This is quite interesting because they've never surfed before.
0:28:27 > 0:28:33It's a level playing field, so it will be interesting to see who does best.
0:28:37 > 0:28:40It's fantastic to see them out there.
0:28:40 > 0:28:44It's something that I would never have said to them.
0:28:44 > 0:28:49"This weekend, we'll find a beach and a surf shop and go surfing."
0:28:49 > 0:28:53There are opportunities on the northeast coast to surf.
0:28:53 > 0:28:56They might not take to this,
0:28:56 > 0:29:00but it might open some avenues for trying new things.
0:29:00 > 0:29:02So it is good, yeah.
0:29:02 > 0:29:08'Phil knows this lifestyle is reliant on the New Zealand education system
0:29:08 > 0:29:11'making a good impression on Vanessa.'
0:29:11 > 0:29:14I'm hoping that Vanessa's experience
0:29:14 > 0:29:17will give her an insight into what it's like
0:29:17 > 0:29:22to work in a secondary school, for Vanessa, in New Zealand.
0:29:24 > 0:29:28I'm hoping she just shows what a good teacher she is.
0:29:28 > 0:29:33It's going to be difficult going into a class that you don't know.
0:29:33 > 0:29:36You don't know the capabilities.
0:29:36 > 0:29:40But I'm sure she'll do absolutely fine.
0:29:43 > 0:29:47Right, just to get your brains going.
0:29:47 > 0:29:49There are three words all mixed up.
0:29:49 > 0:29:54Have a go at working out what those words might be.
0:29:54 > 0:29:58'It's such a joy, really, almost,
0:29:58 > 0:30:02'to be in a classroom where the kids are attentive'
0:30:02 > 0:30:06and listen to everything that you say, and are willing to work.
0:30:06 > 0:30:10Excellent. You've got one. You've got two here.
0:30:10 > 0:30:13'Some schoolchildren in the UK'
0:30:13 > 0:30:17have a lot to learn from the kids in New Zealand.
0:30:17 > 0:30:20When it's on a supermarket shelf,
0:30:20 > 0:30:25jumping out, very eye-catching that, very bright colours.
0:30:25 > 0:30:28'She was doing exactly what I would do with the kids.'
0:30:28 > 0:30:34At the moment, there's a shortage of technology teachers in New Zealand.
0:30:34 > 0:30:37'So that's a positive for her.
0:30:37 > 0:30:39'And seeing her teach,'
0:30:39 > 0:30:45she fits in well, as if she's been here, knowing the kids for a while.
0:30:45 > 0:30:49'Vanessa seems to have really enjoyed herself
0:30:49 > 0:30:53'and the children have a package of their own to give her.'
0:30:53 > 0:30:57On behalf of room 8, we would like to thank you for coming here
0:30:57 > 0:31:01and teaching us new skills.
0:31:01 > 0:31:06Thank you very much. That's really nice of you. Thank you.
0:31:06 > 0:31:11Can I just say, it's been a real pleasure to be in here today.
0:31:11 > 0:31:14I've loved coming in and working with you.
0:31:14 > 0:31:18I hope to come back and see you soon.
0:31:18 > 0:31:21Thank you very much. It's been really good.
0:31:26 > 0:31:30That was a really nice surprise. I'm very touched.
0:31:30 > 0:31:32- It was great.- Thank you very much.
0:31:32 > 0:31:37- I hope the kids enjoyed it as much as I have.- They have. Yeah.
0:31:37 > 0:31:41You've done the hard work for me. LAUGHS
0:31:41 > 0:31:43'Vanessa really fits into this school,
0:31:43 > 0:31:48'but how have the rest of the family taken to new challenges?'
0:31:48 > 0:31:53I'm pleased that they're attempting something new, out of their comfort zone.
0:31:53 > 0:31:58A new experience never hurt anybody. That's why I'm on the beach.
0:31:58 > 0:32:00LAUGHS
0:32:02 > 0:32:04He's up!
0:32:04 > 0:32:07I don't believe that!
0:32:07 > 0:32:09Go on, Liam. Up you get. He's up.
0:32:09 > 0:32:13He's down again. CHUCKLES
0:32:15 > 0:32:21The work-life balance is the key factor in us looking to move to New Zealand.
0:32:21 > 0:32:23As a teacher in the UK,
0:32:23 > 0:32:27you do find that your work life intrudes into your home life.
0:32:27 > 0:32:30You find that it's very easy
0:32:30 > 0:32:34to let the leisure time slip and let work take over.
0:32:34 > 0:32:38I'm hoping that by moving to New Zealand,
0:32:38 > 0:32:40it'll redress the balance
0:32:40 > 0:32:43and we get more time to be together as a family,
0:32:43 > 0:32:46to do things together, even new stuff.
0:32:46 > 0:32:50I think it'll do us all good as a family.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54Well, how was that? >
0:32:54 > 0:32:57Wet? Megan? What do you think?
0:32:57 > 0:33:00I got hit in the ear by the surfboard.
0:33:00 > 0:33:04- What did you think of that? - Loved it.
0:33:04 > 0:33:07Because you were the first one up? >
0:33:07 > 0:33:09I don't know.
0:33:11 > 0:33:16INSTRUCTOR: A bit of saltwater up the nose never hurt anyone.
0:33:16 > 0:33:21'It seems that New Zealand has a lot to offer the Taylor family,
0:33:21 > 0:33:25'in terms of the work-life balance they crave.
0:33:25 > 0:33:30'Vanessa still needs to have that important discussion about salary.
0:33:30 > 0:33:35'If they can't make the sums add up, a move could be in jeopardy.'
0:33:35 > 0:33:39I earn nearly £30,000 in the UK.
0:33:39 > 0:33:43I know that the wages are lower in New Zealand
0:33:43 > 0:33:46but the costs of living is lower.
0:33:46 > 0:33:48What could I expect?
0:33:48 > 0:33:52You'd possibly be in the range of about 55,000,
0:33:52 > 0:33:57- with your experience and qualifications.- That's quite good.
0:33:57 > 0:33:59Cost of living's lower, so...
0:33:59 > 0:34:01If you live in Auckland,
0:34:01 > 0:34:05you get the same wage, there's no "London weighting".
0:34:05 > 0:34:09For a teacher to live in central Auckland, it's very expensive.
0:34:09 > 0:34:13If you live in a provincial town where the houses cost 50,000,
0:34:13 > 0:34:21or you could live in the heart of Auckland where you pay, around here, 650,000 upwards for a property.
0:34:21 > 0:34:23That's quite interesting.
0:34:23 > 0:34:28The salary for teachers in New Zealand was lower than the UK.
0:34:28 > 0:34:34I was worried that we wouldn't be able to manage, it wasn't something we could do.
0:34:34 > 0:34:39Because the cost of living is lower, that will offset that.
0:34:39 > 0:34:44So it doesn't seem too bad, perfectly manageable, anyway.
0:34:44 > 0:34:51'Until Vanessa's worked out the figures, she can't be sure.
0:34:51 > 0:34:57'Before she gets that chance, how will she vote on her experience?'
0:34:57 > 0:35:00Teaching in New Zealand is very similar to the UK.
0:35:00 > 0:35:06But it does seem that there's more opportunity to actually teach,
0:35:06 > 0:35:09rather than deal with behavioural issues,
0:35:09 > 0:35:15which there's a lot of in the UK, and it's a friendlier environment.
0:35:15 > 0:35:20With that in mind, I'm going to choose...
0:35:20 > 0:35:22New Zealand.
0:35:26 > 0:35:33'Vanessa and Phil have been dreaming about moving to New Zealand for some time.'
0:35:33 > 0:35:37There's loads of space and a better lifestyle for all of us.
0:35:37 > 0:35:39Especially the kids.
0:35:39 > 0:35:44'Convincing them to move to the other side of the world isn't easy.'
0:35:44 > 0:35:49I'm just not sure if it's totally possible for me...
0:35:49 > 0:35:54'Will Megan's fall put her off New Zealand for good?'
0:35:54 > 0:35:57I'd miss my friends if I moved out here.
0:35:57 > 0:36:02'They have fallen in love with rural properties, but the week's not over.
0:36:02 > 0:36:06'If the sums don't add up, New Zealand may only be a fantasy.'
0:36:06 > 0:36:10What the estate agent said about our house,
0:36:10 > 0:36:14it would be less equity, we'd be paying out more.
0:36:14 > 0:36:16What's the point?
0:36:20 > 0:36:24The Taylors may have found their dream house down under,
0:36:24 > 0:36:28but the property they can afford in New Zealand
0:36:28 > 0:36:32will depend on the price they can get for their house.
0:36:32 > 0:36:39'Their home is a five-bedroom property they bought in 2000. They extended it to fit their family.
0:36:39 > 0:36:44'The Taylors believe it's now worth £235,000.
0:36:44 > 0:36:48'We sent an estate agent to give his opinion on what it's worth.'
0:36:48 > 0:36:51MEGAN: Hey, it looks clean!
0:36:53 > 0:36:56- It looks tiny. - It does, doesn't it?
0:36:56 > 0:37:01Reception room. Nice bright room. Plenty of natural light.
0:37:01 > 0:37:04MEGAN: It makes it look tiny.
0:37:04 > 0:37:08Pleasant dining area, ideal for entertaining.
0:37:08 > 0:37:13- We've entertained lots in there. - Attractive kitchen. Nice appliances.
0:37:14 > 0:37:17Very nice garden as well.
0:37:21 > 0:37:24Yes! Well done! Shoes off!
0:37:26 > 0:37:30Nice bright, spacious bedroom. Must be a rugby fan.
0:37:30 > 0:37:33Yup.
0:37:33 > 0:37:37Nice bright room. Walk-in wardrobe.
0:37:37 > 0:37:39Nice feature. Good selling point.
0:37:39 > 0:37:43- There's one in the other room! - Good size room.
0:37:43 > 0:37:50- We haven't been in the disastrous bedroom yet.- He's not going in!
0:37:50 > 0:37:54'The Taylors have had their house valued previously at £235,000.
0:37:54 > 0:37:58'What does the agent think its current value is?'
0:37:58 > 0:38:04This is a lovely five-bedroom extended property in a sought-after location with links to schools.
0:38:04 > 0:38:10The master bedroom would benefit from an en suite, though it's still charming.
0:38:10 > 0:38:12£185,000 for a quick sale.
0:38:12 > 0:38:15- You are joking?!- For a quick sale?
0:38:16 > 0:38:20That is ridiculous, I have to say.
0:38:20 > 0:38:25It was 225, 235 and 245, the three valuations we got.
0:38:25 > 0:38:30So we went for 235, It's on the market for 235.
0:38:30 > 0:38:34That's probably why you haven't had any viewings, cos it's too high.
0:38:34 > 0:38:36It's pointless.
0:38:36 > 0:38:39We'd hardly have any money to bring over.
0:38:39 > 0:38:44To sell it at that, I'd rather stay in the UK, simple as that.
0:38:45 > 0:38:49And all this will have been for nothing.
0:38:49 > 0:38:54With that crushing news, Phil and Vanessa have to do their sums
0:38:54 > 0:38:58to see if a move to New Zealand is possible at all.
0:38:58 > 0:39:03'We've prepared a comparison of their UK and New Zealand expenses,
0:39:03 > 0:39:06'to see if they can afford a life down under.'
0:39:06 > 0:39:09Cost of weekly shop.
0:39:09 > 0:39:12107. If we bought it in the UK.
0:39:12 > 0:39:17Total weekly shop in New Zealand, 128.
0:39:17 > 0:39:22Cost of living is supposed to be cheaper here.
0:39:22 > 0:39:25Looking at that, it's not.
0:39:26 > 0:39:30Horse riding lessons. £315?!
0:39:30 > 0:39:34Petrol, that's got to be cheaper here.
0:39:34 > 0:39:36It says £41.
0:39:36 > 0:39:39More for water.
0:39:43 > 0:39:45So this is the interesting bit.
0:39:48 > 0:39:49Apparently,
0:39:49 > 0:39:54it's £1,000 more expensive per month to live here.
0:39:54 > 0:39:58It's drastically worse off living here.
0:39:58 > 0:40:04'A bad exchange rate and possibly only half the equity in their house
0:40:04 > 0:40:08'make their outgoings more expensive than they'd bargained for.'
0:40:08 > 0:40:14The biggest expense on there, which makes the difference to that figure, is the mortgage.
0:40:14 > 0:40:19If these figures are correct, the cost of living
0:40:19 > 0:40:24is £1,000 a month more, then it's just not worth it.
0:40:24 > 0:40:28There's no point buying a cheaper house
0:40:28 > 0:40:31just because that's all we could afford.
0:40:31 > 0:40:36You'll resent coming, and that's not the objective of what we want.
0:40:36 > 0:40:38What's the point?
0:40:45 > 0:40:49The Taylors want to spend more time together as a family,
0:40:49 > 0:40:52and hope to find this in New Zealand.
0:40:52 > 0:40:57What exactly does the Kiwi lifestyle have to offer?
0:40:58 > 0:41:04'Back in the UK, Liam and the family give up a lot of free time
0:41:04 > 0:41:05'to the St John's ambulance service.
0:41:05 > 0:41:12'Leaving this will be hard for Liam, who sees it as a stepping stone to a career as a paramedic.
0:41:12 > 0:41:17'Phil and Vanessa hope that showing him the same opportunities here
0:41:17 > 0:41:20'might convince him he has a future here.'
0:41:20 > 0:41:24You've got an interest in St John in the UK.
0:41:24 > 0:41:29Liam started it all. He's probably the most knowledgable.
0:41:29 > 0:41:33- It's your fault, then? > - All my fault!
0:41:33 > 0:41:37My son has grown up with the ambulance service
0:41:37 > 0:41:40and he's an advanced paramedic.
0:41:40 > 0:41:43He's followed on as well. >
0:41:43 > 0:41:47What's the chances of Liam doing this?
0:41:47 > 0:41:51With experience in the UK, probably a good chance.
0:41:51 > 0:41:57I'm not involved with recruitment but he'll have a good chance.
0:41:57 > 0:42:03'We thought it was something that Liam might enjoy. It looks like we've been right.'
0:42:03 > 0:42:08He's very excited and this might be the thing that brings him here.
0:42:08 > 0:42:13PHIL: 'The type of stuff that we do in the UK, we do "eventing".
0:42:13 > 0:42:18'It's virtually all volunteer work. This takes it to the next level.'
0:42:18 > 0:42:23The type of thing that Liam had his heart set on with our NHS.
0:42:23 > 0:42:28This might be a way into it for him. That's why he's so excited.
0:42:30 > 0:42:33Fingers crossed.
0:42:33 > 0:42:37You can probably tell by the smile on my face that I'm extremely happy
0:42:37 > 0:42:41being able to come to an ambulance station here.
0:42:41 > 0:42:45It's given me quite a lot to think about.
0:42:45 > 0:42:48New Zealand might be a good option to take.
0:42:48 > 0:42:52At the moment, I'm still quite swayed towards the UK.
0:42:52 > 0:42:54But...
0:42:54 > 0:43:00I think New Zealand is slowly growing on me. I do have to admit.
0:43:00 > 0:43:03'That's potentially great news.
0:43:03 > 0:43:09'Vanessa and Phil are delighted that they may have found something that could convince Liam to move.
0:43:09 > 0:43:11'There's still Megan.
0:43:11 > 0:43:16'If she doesn't see some horses, they could be back to square one.
0:43:18 > 0:43:22'Back in the UK, Megan loves horse riding.
0:43:22 > 0:43:26'If they move down under, Mum and Dad have promised her a horse.
0:43:26 > 0:43:31'The Taylors are off to check out the local horse riding centre.'
0:43:31 > 0:43:35Do you want to saddle them up?
0:43:35 > 0:43:39'This is what Megan's been looking forward to.
0:43:39 > 0:43:43'If anything's going to convince her, this should be it.
0:43:43 > 0:43:46'I hope it lives up to her dreams.'
0:43:47 > 0:43:51This is the most exciting thing that I'm looking forward to.
0:43:51 > 0:43:55I just love horses better than anything else. Hello.
0:43:55 > 0:44:02'Vanessa's anxious. She was injured falling in the past, but she'll do anything to persuade Megan.'
0:44:02 > 0:44:06A bit nervous. You never know with a new horse.
0:44:06 > 0:44:09But should be fine.
0:44:09 > 0:44:11Up until this morning,
0:44:11 > 0:44:15Megan actually said, "At the moment, it's the UK for me."
0:44:15 > 0:44:19But she hadn't seen any horses up until then.
0:44:19 > 0:44:24I'd think, by the end of the day, this would change her mind.
0:44:26 > 0:44:30'Phil is absolutely sure their plan is going to work.'
0:44:30 > 0:44:32Yeah, I think this is...
0:44:32 > 0:44:36This is the lifestyle I could live with and Vanessa could.
0:44:36 > 0:44:41If there's a horse involved, Megan will be more than happy.
0:44:46 > 0:44:50That horse seems... It's a little bit spirited.
0:44:53 > 0:44:59'Megan's in her element, but is Liam warming up to a life down under?'
0:44:59 > 0:45:04I think this is an excellent lifestyle to live, if it's possible.
0:45:04 > 0:45:09I'm just not sure if it's totally possible for me yet...
0:45:09 > 0:45:14'This stumble couldn't have come at a worse moment.
0:45:14 > 0:45:18'If she won't get back on, this could put her off New Zealand.'
0:45:18 > 0:45:21She's come off before but never like that.
0:45:21 > 0:45:24You just don't know the horses.
0:45:26 > 0:45:29Don't fall. If you fall off your horse it's cool.
0:45:29 > 0:45:32If you fall off the trough, it's bad.
0:45:32 > 0:45:36'Like a true professional. Megan's back on.'
0:45:36 > 0:45:38< You didn't panic, Megan.
0:45:38 > 0:45:43Because I've been on a lot of horses that try and buck me off.
0:45:43 > 0:45:47'Phil and Vanessa have done everything they can
0:45:47 > 0:45:50'to convince Megan she could make a life here.
0:45:50 > 0:45:52'Will it be enough?'
0:45:53 > 0:45:59I like riding in England better. I like the horses better.
0:45:59 > 0:46:04It's a lot different riding. These horses are a lot bouncier.
0:46:04 > 0:46:09The horses I ride at home, they're quicker but they're a smoother ride.
0:46:09 > 0:46:13I'd miss my friends if I moved out here.
0:46:13 > 0:46:18I wouldn't like to go to school here. I don't really like it here.
0:46:18 > 0:46:24'It sounds like Phil and Vanessa have their work cut out for them.
0:46:24 > 0:46:28'Will they vote UK or New Zealand for lifestyle?
0:46:28 > 0:46:32Everything about the lifestyle in New Zealand seems better,
0:46:32 > 0:46:35so I'm going to vote New Zealand.
0:46:35 > 0:46:37From what we've seen so far,
0:46:37 > 0:46:40I would have to vote New Zealand.
0:46:40 > 0:46:44There's more opportunity. I'm going to stick with New Zealand.
0:46:44 > 0:46:48I'm just going to have to vote New Zealand.
0:46:48 > 0:46:52I like my lifestyle in the UK and there's not much to do here.
0:46:52 > 0:46:54So I vote UK.
0:46:54 > 0:46:59'A terrible blow. Phil and Vanessa spent months getting Megan on side.
0:46:59 > 0:47:02'Could this be the end of the road?'
0:47:06 > 0:47:09The Taylors, apart from Megan, of course,
0:47:09 > 0:47:12have really enjoyed their time in New Zealand.
0:47:12 > 0:47:19How will hearing messages from friends and family help them make their final decision?
0:47:22 > 0:47:27'We've prepared a DVD of messages from loved ones back home.'
0:47:27 > 0:47:31Hi, Vanessa. Hi, Phil. Hi, boys. Hi, Megan.
0:47:31 > 0:47:32Hi, Vanessa.
0:47:32 > 0:47:35I hope you've had a fabulous time.
0:47:35 > 0:47:38Hope you've enjoyed yourselves.
0:47:38 > 0:47:43I can't say it enough. I do love him. He's my boy. That's how I feel about him.
0:47:43 > 0:47:47She's quite quiet. She has a dry sense of humour.
0:47:47 > 0:47:49She's very loving.
0:47:49 > 0:47:53She's very loving to me because...
0:47:53 > 0:47:57we're very close, with her not having a mother.
0:47:57 > 0:48:00She was old enough to look after herself,
0:48:00 > 0:48:02but I was there when she needed me.
0:48:02 > 0:48:06She's more than a grandmother to her.
0:48:06 > 0:48:11She is a substitute mother for her.
0:48:11 > 0:48:17That bond is there, always has been, with her grandmother.
0:48:18 > 0:48:20If Liam went out there
0:48:20 > 0:48:25he wouldn't settle anyway, I think he'd want to come home!
0:48:25 > 0:48:31I think my sister would be disappointed if he didn't go.
0:48:31 > 0:48:36Round the other side of the world, it's a big thing to leave him behind.
0:48:36 > 0:48:40Ryan and Megan are two outstanding children.
0:48:40 > 0:48:43He's a very loving child, Ryan.
0:48:43 > 0:48:45We get on really well.
0:48:45 > 0:48:50And Megan, she gets a bit stroppy, but girls do, don't they?
0:48:50 > 0:48:53Across the board, they're great kids.
0:48:53 > 0:48:57What we'd miss most is the noise. They're always quite noisy.
0:48:57 > 0:49:02The friendship with Vanessa I'll miss, really.
0:49:02 > 0:49:05It's something you've built up over the years.
0:49:05 > 0:49:12It's hard, really, when you've just always been there.
0:49:12 > 0:49:17I just want them to make it. Every mother wants to see the kids get on.
0:49:17 > 0:49:22- Be happy, that's the main thing. - That's very important. Be happy.
0:49:22 > 0:49:27I don't blame them, actually. They've got a grown family.
0:49:27 > 0:49:30You have to do what's best for your family.
0:49:30 > 0:49:34As much as you don't want them to go, they'll do what they want to.
0:49:38 > 0:49:42You should give it a real go. It's difficult leaving us behind.
0:49:42 > 0:49:46But go for it, Vanessa. And Phil. You'll have a ball.
0:49:46 > 0:49:48For purely selfish reasons,
0:49:48 > 0:49:52I would want Vanessa to stay here.
0:49:52 > 0:49:55But I'm not selfish.
0:49:55 > 0:49:58I would want them to thoroughly enjoy it
0:49:58 > 0:50:03and I would want them not to worry about what's going on back here.
0:50:03 > 0:50:09This will always be home, but it doesn't have to always be their home.
0:50:09 > 0:50:13Vanessa, don't think about anybody else.
0:50:13 > 0:50:18Just think about you, Phil and your children. If you want to stay, stay.
0:50:18 > 0:50:22If you want to come home, you come home.
0:50:22 > 0:50:25It's a difficult time for you, lots of decisions to be made.
0:50:25 > 0:50:31We'll do everything we can for you. We just want you to be happy.
0:50:31 > 0:50:36I just hope everything goes OK for you, Phil. You're a good man.
0:50:36 > 0:50:41Missing you and look forward to seeing you again.
0:50:41 > 0:50:43Hope you make the right decision.
0:50:54 > 0:50:59PHIL: It's pretty much the way I expected it to be.
0:50:59 > 0:51:02All the family's been very supportive.
0:51:02 > 0:51:06They've wanted us to do what we feel is right.
0:51:06 > 0:51:09RYAN: I know everyone's supportive.
0:51:09 > 0:51:14They even told us, "When making your decision, don't think about us."
0:51:14 > 0:51:18But you can't not bring them into mind.
0:51:20 > 0:51:24I'm going to miss them but I wouldn't have a choice anyway.
0:51:24 > 0:51:27If Mum and Dad decide to go, we have to.
0:51:27 > 0:51:31It has made a difference seeing that.
0:51:31 > 0:51:36She's just very matter-of-fact.
0:51:36 > 0:51:41Just puts her cards on the table and tells you how it is.
0:51:41 > 0:51:46"If you want to stay, stay. If you want to come home, come home!"
0:51:46 > 0:51:50It is as simple as that with her, really.
0:51:50 > 0:51:53LIAM: It's a massive decision.
0:51:53 > 0:51:57It's an even bigger decision for me.
0:51:57 > 0:52:01Because I've got the option to stay behind and not go.
0:52:01 > 0:52:07And that might impact the rest of the family's decision.
0:52:10 > 0:52:12That's the hardest part.
0:52:12 > 0:52:15Making the move to live down under
0:52:15 > 0:52:18is the most difficult decision for them all,
0:52:18 > 0:52:21emotionally and financially.
0:52:21 > 0:52:25Their week has been a mixture of highs and lows.
0:52:31 > 0:52:35'The past week has been a roller coaster ride for the Taylors.
0:52:35 > 0:52:38'They found their dream home.'
0:52:38 > 0:52:45- Pretty much perfect.- Much more the kind of thing we had in mind.
0:52:45 > 0:52:47It's pretty spectacular.
0:52:47 > 0:52:52'And the children took to New Zealand's outdoor lifestyle.'
0:52:52 > 0:52:55- What did you think of that? - Loved it.
0:52:55 > 0:53:00'Horse-mad Megan wasn't taken with the New Zealand horses.'
0:53:00 > 0:53:05She didn't enjoy the horse riding as much as she or I thought she would.
0:53:05 > 0:53:13She's had quite a few negative days and I thought she would have liked everything about it.
0:53:13 > 0:53:15That hasn't been the case.
0:53:15 > 0:53:19'The work-life balance won Phil and Vanessa over,
0:53:19 > 0:53:22'but the cost of living put a spanner in the works.'
0:53:22 > 0:53:27It does seem to offer everything that we were looking for.
0:53:27 > 0:53:33But, at the moment, the obstacle is the financial situation.
0:53:33 > 0:53:38PHIL: I'd rather stay in the UK in a nice sized house
0:53:38 > 0:53:41than come here and struggle financially.
0:53:41 > 0:53:46New Zealand was attractive to begin with, whether it still is...
0:53:46 > 0:53:49Eventually, we have to make a decision.
0:53:49 > 0:53:55'And the question mark over Liam still looms large.'
0:53:55 > 0:53:59There is a lot of pressure on me to make a firm decision,
0:53:59 > 0:54:02to whether I want to stay or go.
0:54:02 > 0:54:06I think it affects my mum a lot, which sways my decision
0:54:06 > 0:54:09towards, "I won't be selfish at all.
0:54:09 > 0:54:13"I'll just go to make everybody else happy."
0:54:13 > 0:54:19But whether that's the best decision for me to make is another question.
0:54:20 > 0:54:23'Now, it's crunch time.
0:54:23 > 0:54:27'The ultimate decision could be down to Liam.
0:54:27 > 0:54:29'If he chooses to stay in the UK,
0:54:29 > 0:54:33'the pain of leaving him behind could be too much for the family.
0:54:33 > 0:54:36'How will they vote?'
0:54:36 > 0:54:38New Zealand has a lot to offer
0:54:38 > 0:54:42and I'm really going to miss people in the UK.
0:54:42 > 0:54:46However, with the age of technology the way it is,
0:54:46 > 0:54:51and I know I'll regret it if I don't give it a go.
0:54:51 > 0:54:53I'm going to go with New Zealand.
0:54:53 > 0:54:57There's a lot to leave behind and look back on.
0:54:57 > 0:55:01I also think that there's a lot to look forward to.
0:55:01 > 0:55:05For that reason, I'm going to choose New Zealand.
0:55:05 > 0:55:09I know my friends are going to beat me up, but I choose New Zealand.
0:55:09 > 0:55:14'It all rests on Liam and Megan to cast their votes.'
0:55:14 > 0:55:18I've enjoyed myself more than in the UK.
0:55:18 > 0:55:23As well as having the Bay of Plenty, it's the land of plenty.
0:55:23 > 0:55:26So I'm going to choose New Zealand.
0:55:26 > 0:55:29I've lived in the UK for 12 years.
0:55:29 > 0:55:32I've got loads of friends and family in the UK.
0:55:32 > 0:55:37I don't think I can leave them so I'm going to say UK.
0:55:39 > 0:55:42This is good news that Liam's chosen New Zealand.
0:55:42 > 0:55:45Bit of a surprise that Megan hasn't.
0:55:45 > 0:55:48We've got nine months to work on Megan.
0:55:48 > 0:55:52Didn't work the last nine months we worked on her!
0:55:53 > 0:56:00If it turns out that we can't move to New Zealand, it will be quite devastating.
0:56:00 > 0:56:03I've been looking at it for a long time.
0:56:03 > 0:56:07But, as always, I'm going to try and find a way round it.
0:56:09 > 0:56:12And I will. Cos I'm coming.
0:56:16 > 0:56:22Despite being disappointed by what they can get for their house,
0:56:22 > 0:56:27the Taylors all found something that life in New Zealand could offer.
0:56:27 > 0:56:29And if they can persuade Megan,
0:56:29 > 0:56:34it looks like they will be making the move to live down under.
