0:00:11 > 0:00:14to help them make the biggest decision of their life -
0:00:14 > 0:00:18whether to stay in the UK or to move to New Zealand.
0:00:18 > 0:00:23Karen Galloway is desperate to move with her family to New Zealand.
0:00:23 > 0:00:25I just really want to do it.
0:00:25 > 0:00:28At the minute I'm so excited, I could burst!
0:00:28 > 0:00:34They're tempted by a brand new start in a stunning country.
0:00:34 > 0:00:37But it's a long way to go when you're leaving loved ones behind.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39I'm going to miss her so much!
0:00:43 > 0:00:47Karen's husband, Lee, has a daughter from a previous relationship
0:00:47 > 0:00:49who he'd be leaving back in the UK.
0:00:49 > 0:00:51I don't want them to go.
0:00:55 > 0:00:59But, after less than 24 hours in New Zealand, disaster strikes.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02This trip's almost over before it's even begun!
0:01:02 > 0:01:04So he's in hospital.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08I'm literally on my own!
0:01:30 > 0:01:32With its magnificent landscape
0:01:32 > 0:01:35and small population of only four million,
0:01:35 > 0:01:38New Zealand is many people's idea of the perfect place
0:01:38 > 0:01:40to get away from it all.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42To apply to live in New Zealand as a skilled migrant,
0:01:42 > 0:01:46you must be between the ages of 20 and 55
0:01:46 > 0:01:48and be on the skills shortage list.
0:01:48 > 0:01:51But a move down under is never straightforward.
0:01:51 > 0:01:55We've given another British family the opportunity
0:01:55 > 0:01:57to spend a week down under
0:01:57 > 0:02:00to see if it's all they've dreamt it would be.
0:02:00 > 0:02:04After that, they'll have to make a decision, one way or the other.
0:02:04 > 0:02:08To stay in the UK or to move to New Zealand.
0:02:08 > 0:02:12Karen and Lee Galloway live in the Liverpool suburb of Whiston
0:02:12 > 0:02:14with their three children,
0:02:14 > 0:02:1717-year-old James and toddlers Harvey and Poppy.
0:02:17 > 0:02:19They've lived here all their lives
0:02:19 > 0:02:22and mum, Karen is desperate for a fresh start.
0:02:22 > 0:02:27I first thought about moving away, far away when I had my babies.
0:02:27 > 0:02:30James went through a bad time growing up, he got bullied.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33I don't want to go through that again with Harvey and Poppy,
0:02:33 > 0:02:35I can see Harvey going the same way as James -
0:02:35 > 0:02:36he's got the same temperament -
0:02:36 > 0:02:39and I really don't want to bring them up round here.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41If they move down under,
0:02:41 > 0:02:45Karen's oldest son, James will be leaving his biological father behind.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48Me and my dad passed our bike test together.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51It took me twice though, cos I failed the first time!
0:02:51 > 0:02:54He won't say nothing at first and he'll keep quiet about it,
0:02:54 > 0:02:58but it will really have an effect on him. It's going to be hard.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01I am extremely worried because he's grown up round here,
0:03:01 > 0:03:02he's an adult practically,
0:03:02 > 0:03:05so I'm taking him away from everything he knows.
0:03:05 > 0:03:07That's not Karen's only problem.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10Her husband, Lee is still unsure about a move.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12He's an electrician by trade
0:03:12 > 0:03:17and his qualifications could get the family a skilled migrant visa.
0:03:17 > 0:03:19It is all dependent on me getting work over there.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22But there's just one thing holding him back.
0:03:22 > 0:03:27His ten year old daughter, Freya, visits every fortnight
0:03:27 > 0:03:29and is a big part of the family.
0:03:29 > 0:03:31Freya's a big thing for me...
0:03:31 > 0:03:33I don't know whether she'd cope or
0:03:33 > 0:03:36- whether I'd cope, more than anything, you know.- Yeah.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38But family and friends can visit,
0:03:38 > 0:03:41but it's just Freya, just my daughter.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43Otherwise we'd be there now, I think, wouldn't we?
0:03:43 > 0:03:47Freya's just as much a part of the family as us,
0:03:47 > 0:03:50she's got everything here, she's included in everything.
0:03:50 > 0:03:52She doesn't live here, but she's part of the family.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55She's going to struggle, she's very close to Lee, a proper daddy's girl.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58They get on really well.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00She loves her daddy very much.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02She's been great, you know.
0:04:02 > 0:04:04Every time we talk about it, she's fine,
0:04:04 > 0:04:07but it's not actually happened yet,
0:04:07 > 0:04:10so you don't know how she's going to cope
0:04:10 > 0:04:13or what's going to happen, you know.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15Buried treasure?
0:04:15 > 0:04:16Yeah!
0:04:16 > 0:04:19The Galloways have a large extended family on their doorstep.
0:04:19 > 0:04:24Everyone's feeling the pressure of making such a big decision.
0:04:24 > 0:04:29I would say I have been 90% that I want to do it,
0:04:29 > 0:04:31I want to go to New Zealand,
0:04:31 > 0:04:34I want to start a new life for me and my family.
0:04:36 > 0:04:38And now it's getting closer,
0:04:38 > 0:04:40I will admit it,
0:04:40 > 0:04:42it's hitting me like a slap in the face
0:04:42 > 0:04:46and I'm realising now it's a massive thing we're doing.
0:04:46 > 0:04:49It looks like anything could happen,
0:04:49 > 0:04:53so to help the Galloways decide, they're going to visit Auckland.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56Situated at the top of New Zealand's North Island,
0:04:56 > 0:04:59Auckland is known as the City of Sails
0:04:59 > 0:05:02and is a perfect base to explore the area.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05With a housing budget of £150,000
0:05:05 > 0:05:10the Galloways should be able to find plenty of suitable homes.
0:05:10 > 0:05:14We've found three possible lifestyles for our family,
0:05:14 > 0:05:17each one offering a brand new way of life
0:05:17 > 0:05:20for them to try on their budget.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24But which one will be the most suitable?
0:05:24 > 0:05:27Properties are a lot better value in the country.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29Spacious family homes
0:05:29 > 0:05:31can cost around £150,000,
0:05:31 > 0:05:33so bang on the Galloways' budget.
0:05:33 > 0:05:37But if you want that dream place, you'll have to spend a lot more.
0:05:37 > 0:05:41To match his UK salary of £24,000
0:05:41 > 0:05:44Lee would have to find work as a commercial electrician,
0:05:44 > 0:05:45but the big jobs are in town,
0:05:45 > 0:05:49so he'll be looking at an hour's commute to the city.
0:05:49 > 0:05:54Coming home to a rural paradise like this, however, could be tempting.
0:05:54 > 0:05:58So, very different from their life in the UK,
0:05:58 > 0:06:00but what about the second option?
0:06:00 > 0:06:04The Galloways will have to venture into the suburbs
0:06:04 > 0:06:05to find a home
0:06:05 > 0:06:07on their £150,000 budget.
0:06:07 > 0:06:09And they may have to stretch
0:06:09 > 0:06:12their finances for more space.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15Lee would have a 15 minute commute to work in the metropolis.
0:06:15 > 0:06:20Auckland is a fast-growing city and electricians like Lee are in demand.
0:06:20 > 0:06:23If he works overtime, he could take home around £25,000,
0:06:23 > 0:06:27about the same as he earns in the UK.
0:06:28 > 0:06:33That all looks very inviting, but what about the third option?
0:06:33 > 0:06:38Auckland's coastline epitomises the calm and beauty many people crave
0:06:38 > 0:06:41but properties a walk from the beach can be pricey.
0:06:41 > 0:06:46Homes like this cost around £300,000, so double the Galloways' budget,
0:06:46 > 0:06:48but if they look further inland,
0:06:48 > 0:06:52they should be able to snap up something that won't break the bank.
0:06:52 > 0:06:55The booming tourist trade means there should be work for Lee,
0:06:55 > 0:06:58but he may have to do a half-hour commute to the city
0:06:58 > 0:07:01to earn more than £20,000.
0:07:01 > 0:07:05Three very different possibilities there for the Galloways to try,
0:07:05 > 0:07:08but which one did we decide would suit them best?
0:07:10 > 0:07:13We thought the city option would be the best for the Galloways.
0:07:13 > 0:07:17It has a family-friendly atmosphere and Lee should find good work.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20And with open beaches only a short drive away,
0:07:20 > 0:07:23Karen will get to experience the tranquillity she craves.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26We've lined up some properties for them to view...
0:07:26 > 0:07:28This is the best out of the three.
0:07:28 > 0:07:31But still it's nothing like the ones at home.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34..And organised a job for Lee to try out...
0:07:34 > 0:07:37It's a big change, starting again somewhere else.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40..As well as giving them a taste of the New Zealand lifestyle,
0:07:40 > 0:07:43but will it all get too much.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45Because Harvey and Poppy are only little,
0:07:45 > 0:07:48they don't know that they wouldn't see me again.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51It's going to be the hardest thing we've ever done and, you know,
0:07:51 > 0:07:54it might be the worst thing we've ever done.
0:07:54 > 0:07:59None of the Galloways can foresee how turbulent the week ahead will be,
0:07:59 > 0:08:02but it's time for them to take the plunge.
0:08:04 > 0:08:09The flight from Liverpool to Auckland takes the Galloways 32 hours
0:08:09 > 0:08:11and 12,000 miles from home.
0:08:13 > 0:08:16None of them have ever been this far away before,
0:08:16 > 0:08:19and leaving their loved ones at the airport
0:08:19 > 0:08:22even for a short trip like this wasn't easy.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24Tears off me mum!
0:08:24 > 0:08:27Because we're coming here to look at houses and see what it's like,
0:08:27 > 0:08:29I think that's what brought it home for her.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33They're tired now, they just want to get to bed, but brilliant!
0:08:33 > 0:08:35It took us ten minutes to wake them up on the plane,
0:08:35 > 0:08:37but they've been really, really good.
0:08:37 > 0:08:39We knew how long it was going to be
0:08:39 > 0:08:41but you don't realise until you do it!
0:08:41 > 0:08:44They're all excited about the adventures that lie ahead.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46- I'm excited!- Really excited now!
0:08:46 > 0:08:49Looking forward to seeing the properties mainly,
0:08:49 > 0:08:50not so much the job!
0:08:50 > 0:08:52I just want to see it all, I want to take it all in.
0:08:52 > 0:08:57Meeting people, yeah, everything. I'm so excited!
0:08:57 > 0:09:01The whole family's future is at stake as they head out into the unknown.
0:09:03 > 0:09:07The Galloways will be staying in a house in a quiet suburb of Auckland.
0:09:07 > 0:09:10After 30 hours of travelling it will give them calm
0:09:10 > 0:09:14and space to relax before they start exploring.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17With four bedrooms and a large open-plan living area,
0:09:17 > 0:09:19there's plenty of space for the kids to roam.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22Which one is it?
0:09:22 > 0:09:25Let's hope the Galloways like it!
0:09:25 > 0:09:26D'you like it?
0:09:26 > 0:09:27Look!
0:09:29 > 0:09:32- Just so different! - A lot different from ours.
0:09:32 > 0:09:34Everything about them is really different.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37Yeah, I love it! Absolutely love it!
0:09:37 > 0:09:38I suppose ours is open plan as well.
0:09:38 > 0:09:42I love this, but look at the landing there!
0:09:42 > 0:09:43Hello!
0:09:43 > 0:09:44Hello!
0:09:45 > 0:09:48Wow, I love this bit!
0:09:48 > 0:09:50It's clearly the kind of place they'd love,
0:09:50 > 0:09:53but would it be out of their reach to buy?
0:09:53 > 0:09:55At least they can enjoy it for now.
0:09:55 > 0:09:56Beautiful!
0:09:56 > 0:09:59Oh, my word! Look at the wardrobe!
0:09:59 > 0:10:02Now that's a bit different from the one I've got at home.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05We could play games in here, Poppy!
0:10:05 > 0:10:06Wow!
0:10:06 > 0:10:09It's a lot bigger. The houses look big, I like the ceilings.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12We'd never be able to afford anything of this size at home.
0:10:14 > 0:10:16I mean I've barely got a wardrobe at home.
0:10:16 > 0:10:18That's like bigger than my kitchen!
0:10:18 > 0:10:21There's something they didn't expect outside.
0:10:21 > 0:10:25Wow! Look at that, Pop!
0:10:25 > 0:10:27Isn't it cold!
0:10:27 > 0:10:30Karen's got culture shock of the highest order.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33The house is completely different to what we're used to.
0:10:33 > 0:10:36I'm surprised how fun it looks, to be honest.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38It does look... Everything's different.
0:10:38 > 0:10:41I don't know why I'm surprised, it's a completely different country.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44I don't know why I'm surprised, but I am surprised.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47- It's nice though. - It's quite foreign!
0:10:47 > 0:10:49Yeah.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53- Yeah, I love it! - I like the style of house.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56As soon as we'd flown in, I thought "I'm going to like it".
0:10:56 > 0:11:00So she likes it, which is more than can be said for James.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02It seems very similar to England.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05I don't think there's that much gained,
0:11:05 > 0:11:07to justify the distance we're coming.
0:11:07 > 0:11:11It's the other side of the world and it's not that much better.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14So far, so bad for James, then.
0:11:14 > 0:11:18And for Lee, his daughter Freya is already playing on his mind.
0:11:18 > 0:11:22Freya was fine but as I say, it's not happened yet.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25It will be completely different when it is, you know,
0:11:25 > 0:11:27or if it does, but she was fine.
0:11:27 > 0:11:31- I think Freya's really coping with it well, isn't she?- Yeah.
0:11:31 > 0:11:32Well, you say that,
0:11:32 > 0:11:35but talking about it is completely different, isn't it?
0:11:35 > 0:11:37The ball's started rolling now.
0:11:37 > 0:11:39It's just all more real, isn't it?
0:11:39 > 0:11:43But little do they know how real it's just about to get!
0:11:47 > 0:11:50The rental accommodation is just to the Galloways' taste,
0:11:50 > 0:11:54but sometimes the unexpected can happen.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57This trip could be over before it's even begun!
0:11:59 > 0:12:01During their first night down under,
0:12:01 > 0:12:04Lee started experiencing severe pain in his leg.
0:12:04 > 0:12:08In fact, the pain became so unbearable
0:12:08 > 0:12:11that Lee admitted himself to hospital.
0:12:11 > 0:12:14SIREN
0:12:22 > 0:12:23The following morning,
0:12:23 > 0:12:26Karen is trying her best to carry on as normal.
0:12:27 > 0:12:30When we were on the plane, Lee's leg started hurting,
0:12:30 > 0:12:32swelling up and going really red.
0:12:32 > 0:12:36And then when we've got off the plane,
0:12:36 > 0:12:38it's got progressively worse.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40It's got very hot.
0:12:41 > 0:12:43And just the pain...
0:12:43 > 0:12:44When he was on the plane,
0:12:44 > 0:12:47we thought his leg was swelling up and stuff
0:12:47 > 0:12:50and then as it got worse we did think it could be a DVT.
0:12:50 > 0:12:52What a nightmare!
0:12:52 > 0:12:55Karen's concerned Lee may have developed a condition
0:12:55 > 0:13:02called Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT, which can be life-threatening.
0:13:02 > 0:13:06Every long-haul flyer should be aware of what it is
0:13:06 > 0:13:08and how best to avoid it.
0:13:08 > 0:13:13DVT is a condition in which blood clots form, usually in the legs.
0:13:13 > 0:13:15It can result from a person sitting down
0:13:15 > 0:13:18for long periods of time without moving.
0:13:18 > 0:13:22It mainly affects people with underlying health problems.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25The first signs are often a tightening of the calf in the leg.
0:13:25 > 0:13:29The fact that you feel a bit stiff and you can't move around so much.
0:13:29 > 0:13:32It just feels a bit uncomfortable, like you've been kicked in the calf.
0:13:32 > 0:13:37If it's not diagnosed and treated early, the condition can prove fatal.
0:13:37 > 0:13:41It's important that this Deep Vein Thrombosis is diagnosed very quickly
0:13:41 > 0:13:43because if it's not in the early stages,
0:13:43 > 0:13:47then the patient or the traveller may go on to develop coughs,
0:13:47 > 0:13:49and coughing-up of blood.
0:13:49 > 0:13:54These clots can migrate or travel up the veins through to the heart.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57To reduce the risk of developing DVT on a flight,
0:13:57 > 0:14:00you need to keep the blood flowing to the legs by moving around the cabin
0:14:00 > 0:14:02and stretching your legs regularly.
0:14:02 > 0:14:06But if you have any other symptoms, see a doctor immediately.
0:14:06 > 0:14:11In such situations as leg pain, a little bit of a temperature,
0:14:11 > 0:14:12feeling a little bit unwell,
0:14:12 > 0:14:15they should report to the nearest accident and medical centre.
0:14:17 > 0:14:20The Galloways imagined living the dream life in New Zealand,
0:14:20 > 0:14:24but what was supposed to be a glorious week down under
0:14:24 > 0:14:26has turned into a nightmare!
0:14:26 > 0:14:28Karen's been stuck at home
0:14:28 > 0:14:30and not only has she been worried about Lee,
0:14:30 > 0:14:34she's experiencing first-hand the isolation
0:14:34 > 0:14:37of being so far from her loved ones.
0:14:37 > 0:14:39I don't know where I am, I don't know who to go to,
0:14:39 > 0:14:41I don't know what phone calls to make.
0:14:41 > 0:14:44I'm literally on my own.
0:14:44 > 0:14:48So it's a bit of a blow, to be honest,
0:14:48 > 0:14:51I wasn't expecting it, but these things happen.
0:14:53 > 0:14:57Karen can't wait to get to the hospital to see how Lee is.
0:14:57 > 0:15:03After a full body scan, medics have diagnosed Lee with cellulitis -
0:15:03 > 0:15:07an infection caused by a previous wound which deteriorated on the flight.
0:15:07 > 0:15:08Dad, is it this foot?
0:15:08 > 0:15:13It was more red, basically, than swollen but it's loads better.
0:15:13 > 0:15:16- I couldn't touch it the other day, but...- What is this for?
0:15:16 > 0:15:21Although not DVT, cellulitis can also be dangerous if left untreated,
0:15:21 > 0:15:25so Lee is staying in for observation.
0:15:25 > 0:15:26I couldn't believe it!
0:15:26 > 0:15:28- What are them arrows for?- Two days!
0:15:28 > 0:15:32When he said "I'm keeping you in" I was like, "Ohhhh!", I was gutted,
0:15:32 > 0:15:33couldn't believe it!
0:15:33 > 0:15:36So what does Lee think of the trip so far?
0:15:36 > 0:15:39I haven't seen New Zealand, but the hospitals are good!
0:15:40 > 0:15:42They've been really good here.
0:15:42 > 0:15:45But this is real life, like, isn't it?
0:15:45 > 0:15:47This is living New Zealand life, isn't it!
0:15:49 > 0:15:51No holiday for us!
0:15:51 > 0:15:53That's the case.
0:15:53 > 0:15:55Mwah! I've missed ya!
0:15:55 > 0:15:58It's a relief for everyone to know Lee is going to be OK,
0:15:58 > 0:16:01but all Karen and the family can do is sit and wait.
0:16:02 > 0:16:04When we first came, I was really excited,
0:16:04 > 0:16:08but with what's happened with Lee, it's like really unfortunate,
0:16:08 > 0:16:13because it just feels like I'm at home, doing the tea for the kids.
0:16:13 > 0:16:15It's just very normal.
0:16:15 > 0:16:18It's a long way to come and a lot of expense to just be here,
0:16:18 > 0:16:21it's just the same as being at home.
0:16:21 > 0:16:25So, has all this changed Karen's mind about the move?
0:16:25 > 0:16:26I'm not saying nothing yet.
0:16:26 > 0:16:30We'll see how it goes, see if we get a feel for the place and stuff.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33I'll let you know, but I'm quite indifferent at the minute.
0:16:33 > 0:16:37It's hardly the perfect introduction to a life down under.
0:16:37 > 0:16:42This trip certainly isn't turning out as the Galloways had hoped,
0:16:42 > 0:16:45but at least Lee is on the road to recovery.
0:16:45 > 0:16:50We've taken Karen and the children out to try and cheer them up.
0:16:50 > 0:16:53They've come to a children's session at the local library.
0:16:53 > 0:16:56Hopefully, they'll all feel a little less lonely!
0:16:56 > 0:16:59Hi to everybody and hello to our special visitors today,
0:16:59 > 0:17:03Harvey and Poppy who have been on a plane and come a long way.
0:17:03 > 0:17:06We're really pleased to have you here at our library today.
0:17:06 > 0:17:11It looks as though Poppy and Harvey are settling right in.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14And even Karen's joining in!
0:17:15 > 0:17:20If they were to move to New Zealand, Karen would hope to meet new friends through events like this.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23It's quite interesting now having a child - Charlie's my first,
0:17:23 > 0:17:25it's such an introduction to people.
0:17:25 > 0:17:29I've met people that I would never have normally met through work or...
0:17:29 > 0:17:31Well, this is going to be my route,
0:17:31 > 0:17:33meeting people while I'm here,
0:17:33 > 0:17:35because obviously I'm not going to be able to work
0:17:35 > 0:17:37so it's through the kids and school.
0:17:37 > 0:17:41It's a really easy introduction when you've got kids, it's not so hard
0:17:41 > 0:17:44and there's a girl that goes here, Vicky, she's an English girl.
0:17:44 > 0:17:49And she's got little twins and we've just met her through this.
0:17:49 > 0:17:55Karen's had a positive day after all and she can't wait to speak to Lee!
0:17:55 > 0:18:00I have met friends and chatted and stuff and sung songs.
0:18:00 > 0:18:02Lee gives her some good news, too.
0:18:02 > 0:18:04He's been discharged.
0:18:04 > 0:18:05Cool. So we'll get there!
0:18:07 > 0:18:10Karen's had a rollercoaster of a day.
0:18:10 > 0:18:11With Lee on his way home
0:18:11 > 0:18:14and a successful trip to meet some other mums,
0:18:14 > 0:18:18Karen's finally feeling positive about being in New Zealand.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21Actually at the minute I'm so excited I could burst.
0:18:21 > 0:18:22I really am!
0:18:22 > 0:18:26If you were to ask me now "Do you want to go home?", I'd say "No, I'll stay please".
0:18:26 > 0:18:29Just speaking to people and getting out the house,
0:18:29 > 0:18:31I mean we had a bit of a hiccup with Lee
0:18:31 > 0:18:34and there was getting out and seeing it and realising
0:18:34 > 0:18:37that I will actually make friends...
0:18:37 > 0:18:38Look at the kids on the beach!
0:18:38 > 0:18:40You don't have to drive to the beach.
0:18:40 > 0:18:44You're next to the library, and the beach is are on your doorstep.
0:18:44 > 0:18:46It's like, you just don't get that at home.
0:18:46 > 0:18:48I just really want to do it.
0:18:48 > 0:18:52In my heart of hearts, I just think it's the right thing
0:18:52 > 0:18:54for us as a family to do, I really do.
0:18:54 > 0:18:57I'm just really excited at the minute, I really am!
0:18:59 > 0:19:04It's finally time to check out the all-important property.
0:19:09 > 0:19:14Back in the UK, the Galloways live in a three-bedroom terrace in Liverpool.
0:19:14 > 0:19:17They believe it could be worth around £150,000.
0:19:17 > 0:19:20It's a small house for their growing family
0:19:20 > 0:19:23and they'd like to live in a quieter and safer area.
0:19:23 > 0:19:28In New Zealand they're looking for a spacious property with some land
0:19:28 > 0:19:33and a rural or sea view, but their £150,000 budget
0:19:33 > 0:19:36might not get them exactly what they're looking for.
0:19:36 > 0:19:40We found them three properties in the Auckland suburb of North Shore.
0:19:40 > 0:19:44It's good for children and a short commute to the city for Lee.
0:19:44 > 0:19:50First up is a three-bedroom property on the market for around £130,000.
0:19:50 > 0:19:53It's below their budget, but only has three bedrooms.
0:19:53 > 0:19:58Estate agent, Helene Brownie, is keen to show off her prize offerings.
0:19:58 > 0:20:00Has he got you a flower?
0:20:02 > 0:20:08This is nice for its price. It's got this extra piece here, the foyer.
0:20:08 > 0:20:12So it's west-facing which means we get lots of afternoon sun down here
0:20:12 > 0:20:15and this would be a really nice area to use in the summer
0:20:15 > 0:20:20with an outdoor table or a spa pool just to get away from the sun,
0:20:20 > 0:20:24so I apologise there's not too much of it today!
0:20:24 > 0:20:28Mmm. They don't seem too impressed with the foyer!
0:20:28 > 0:20:31Time to go inside, that's if Helene can unlock the door!
0:20:31 > 0:20:33TV bloopers, this bit!
0:20:35 > 0:20:38That's it. OK. Come on through.
0:20:38 > 0:20:42We're in! Let's hope they like it!
0:20:43 > 0:20:47It's at the very start of your budget.
0:20:47 > 0:20:49You've got exclusive views out here.
0:20:49 > 0:20:54Mmm, 'exclusive views' of a bush and a fence!
0:20:54 > 0:20:58Not exactly the rural view they were hoping for!
0:20:58 > 0:21:01Is the interior any more exciting?
0:21:01 > 0:21:02That's the old electrics.
0:21:02 > 0:21:04As we said, the old style, isn't it!
0:21:04 > 0:21:07- You're an electrician, aren't you? - Yeah.- OK.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10Mmm, Helene was hoping Lee might be excited by the challenge
0:21:10 > 0:21:14of modernising this home's electrics. I'm not sure he is!
0:21:14 > 0:21:18Would the master bedroom be any more electrifying?
0:21:20 > 0:21:23The room is met with a deathly silence.
0:21:28 > 0:21:32Nice, but it's small, isn't it?
0:21:32 > 0:21:35It's nice, but it is small.
0:21:35 > 0:21:37Helene's not giving up easily!
0:21:37 > 0:21:40So, for a fraction under 300 for the North Shore,
0:21:40 > 0:21:42this is actually very good buying.
0:21:42 > 0:21:45I mean, it's probably no bigger than ours at home, is it?
0:21:45 > 0:21:48It's just you want to go bigger and better, don't you?
0:21:48 > 0:21:49Oh, dear!
0:21:49 > 0:21:54This cosy pad with "exclusive views" hasn't exactly sparked the Galloways' imagination.
0:21:54 > 0:21:58- I didn't think it was going to be as small.- No, it's very small.
0:21:58 > 0:22:02It's what we're used to at home. It's very dated, isn't it?
0:22:02 > 0:22:05But I think they're all going to be, aren't they?
0:22:05 > 0:22:07To a certain extent, you know.
0:22:07 > 0:22:09But it is a bit smaller than we'd expected.
0:22:09 > 0:22:13Onwards and upwards - we hope!
0:22:15 > 0:22:19Property Two is on the market for around £150,000
0:22:19 > 0:22:22and right at the top of their budget.
0:22:22 > 0:22:24It's got open plan living space,
0:22:24 > 0:22:27three bedrooms and a beautiful garden.
0:22:27 > 0:22:31These really are exclusive views!
0:22:31 > 0:22:33Are shoes all right if we wipe 'em?
0:22:33 > 0:22:35Thank you.
0:22:35 > 0:22:37Everyone in?
0:22:38 > 0:22:44This is much bigger than the other one, it's more of a family home.
0:22:44 > 0:22:49So, you know, they made it nice. Have a look around.
0:22:49 > 0:22:53They don't need the third bedroom, so they're using it as a work area.
0:22:53 > 0:22:57- Everything's, ugh, you know, small! - Bit cramped, isn't it!- Cramped.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00Karen and Lee don't seem over the moon about this one.
0:23:00 > 0:23:03They were hoping for a bit more space.
0:23:03 > 0:23:08That's smaller than ours, isn't it? Ours is small, but it's smaller.
0:23:08 > 0:23:12Oh, dear! Even a deluxe spa bath doesn't interest them!
0:23:12 > 0:23:17Hopefully, the garden might impress the Galloways a bit more.
0:23:17 > 0:23:21That is amazing, absolutely amazing!
0:23:21 > 0:23:23This is what my idea of New Zealand is!
0:23:23 > 0:23:25- Yes.- I'm just overwhelmed by that.
0:23:25 > 0:23:28I just think it's absolutely stunning!
0:23:28 > 0:23:31Finally, they've found something they like.
0:23:31 > 0:23:35It's very, very peaceful and quiet.
0:23:35 > 0:23:39- That's what you'll pay your money for, isn't it?- The view's nice.
0:23:39 > 0:23:43- Do you want to come downstairs, Poppy?- It's not your actual... - House.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46More lemon trees, Harv, look!
0:23:46 > 0:23:50There's grapefruit trees, Feijoa trees, lemons...
0:23:50 > 0:23:53And this is the underneath of the house,
0:23:53 > 0:23:54which is very good head-height
0:23:54 > 0:23:56if you wanted to develop it any further.
0:23:56 > 0:23:59This is where we could stick me mum!
0:23:59 > 0:24:03So you could develop under here, and it's all insulated
0:24:03 > 0:24:07and nice and dry for underneath a home.
0:24:07 > 0:24:09So ideal storage.
0:24:09 > 0:24:14Lee would want to adapt the house to make the most out of the garden.
0:24:14 > 0:24:19I was thinking actually extend this so this is all enclosed as well
0:24:19 > 0:24:23and I'd have all this glass. This would all be glass-fronted.
0:24:23 > 0:24:25There's bound to be loads of this.
0:24:25 > 0:24:28- This would be like a living room, going back there.- Yeah.
0:24:28 > 0:24:34It turns out Lee is an electrician cum architect cum interior designer!
0:24:34 > 0:24:36It's now time to sort out the garden!
0:24:36 > 0:24:41But you could build something down there, like a decking going out.
0:24:41 > 0:24:42There's loads, isn't there.
0:24:42 > 0:24:45I'd bring the fence in right down the other side,
0:24:45 > 0:24:48cut off the neighbours that you've just met!
0:24:48 > 0:24:52The Galloways seem to be getting excited. Or are they?
0:24:52 > 0:24:53They wouldn't recognise it...
0:24:53 > 0:24:56Everything seems so dated, doesn't it, the houses?
0:24:56 > 0:25:00They're just differently built than over ours, aren't they,
0:25:00 > 0:25:02from their layout, everything!
0:25:02 > 0:25:04They look more...
0:25:04 > 0:25:10Prefab-ish, d'you know what I mean, not as solid as our houses.
0:25:10 > 0:25:14It's not what I'd buy at all in Britain.
0:25:15 > 0:25:17What a pity!
0:25:17 > 0:25:19Lee doesn't seem to like it, after all!
0:25:19 > 0:25:22Will Property Three be any better?
0:25:22 > 0:25:27It boasts five bedrooms, two bathrooms and also has a big garden.
0:25:27 > 0:25:32It's on the market for around £200,000 - £50,000 over budget.
0:25:32 > 0:25:37But will it show off a better quality of New Zealand housing?
0:25:38 > 0:25:40Nice, light, sunny home.
0:25:40 > 0:25:42Yeah.
0:25:42 > 0:25:46You can see you're getting a lot more for your money now.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48You've got the five bedrooms,
0:25:48 > 0:25:52you've got the second living area which is ideal for guests.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56Lee now has an eagle eye for build quality.
0:25:56 > 0:25:59This house has tonnes of space.
0:25:59 > 0:26:03It's very minimalist with some interesting interior decoration.
0:26:03 > 0:26:06Now isn't that lemon sorbet yellow?
0:26:06 > 0:26:10This is Helene's cream of the crop, so Lee, what's the verdict?
0:26:10 > 0:26:14It's a bit like our static caravans.
0:26:14 > 0:26:17More like prefab-ish, not solid, you know, like ours.
0:26:17 > 0:26:21I know it looks like brick outside, but it's still only prefab.
0:26:21 > 0:26:24I think I'd have to build my own if I was going to come.
0:26:24 > 0:26:27This is the best out of the three,
0:26:27 > 0:26:30but still it's nothing like the ones at home.
0:26:31 > 0:26:34Helene's got another trick up her sleeve.
0:26:34 > 0:26:37I know your mortgage is going to be a little bit more
0:26:37 > 0:26:39to achieve a property like this,
0:26:39 > 0:26:44but also, cos you've got the extra rooms you could have flatmates.
0:26:44 > 0:26:48It could bring you an extra income when you're not having guests.
0:26:48 > 0:26:52Flatmates! Come on, Helene, they're not exactly students
0:26:52 > 0:26:55and let's face it, today Lee's not buying!
0:26:55 > 0:26:59It's not the house, it's the actual finish on the houses, if you know what I mean.
0:26:59 > 0:27:02What do you mean, Lee? What's wrong with this?
0:27:02 > 0:27:05I mean, like all the bits that slope, like here,
0:27:05 > 0:27:09just all the little finishing details
0:27:09 > 0:27:12and everything that add up and make it look...
0:27:12 > 0:27:16You know. Like that wall there is all breeze-block.
0:27:16 > 0:27:18You know, it's just the finishing of them.
0:27:21 > 0:27:23It'd really wind Lee up!
0:27:23 > 0:27:24It would.
0:27:24 > 0:27:28Perhaps the stunning brick facade will change Lee's mind.
0:27:28 > 0:27:33They're single skin these, as well, just single skin brick.
0:27:33 > 0:27:34Yeah.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36They're concrete blocks.
0:27:36 > 0:27:39They're quite wide and they load them up
0:27:39 > 0:27:41and then fill them up with concrete.
0:27:41 > 0:27:46Helene's starting to get the feeling she's fighting a losing battle.
0:27:46 > 0:27:50The brick is a veneer... it's just a cladding. Underneath...
0:27:50 > 0:27:53- Oh, yeah, you can see it there. - Underneath the weatherboards.
0:27:53 > 0:27:57- It was the fashion back in the '70s to put the...- Cladding.
0:27:57 > 0:27:59And now it's not!
0:28:01 > 0:28:03Poor Helene.
0:28:03 > 0:28:06She's had a bit of a rough ride with these discerning customers.
0:28:06 > 0:28:12The Galloways are starting to realise they might not be able to afford what they want on their budget.
0:28:12 > 0:28:17I think wherever we end up, Lee, we're going to have to...
0:28:17 > 0:28:18Oh, I know, I know.
0:28:18 > 0:28:21It's not going to be what we're used to, is it?
0:28:21 > 0:28:23The Galloways might have to spend a lot more
0:28:23 > 0:28:27if they're going to find their dream home in New Zealand,
0:28:27 > 0:28:30but at least the kids are enjoying themselves!
0:28:30 > 0:28:34The Galloways have seen three very interesting properties.
0:28:34 > 0:28:38Property One was a fairly average three bedroom pad, well below budget,
0:28:38 > 0:28:41with those rather uninspiring views.
0:28:41 > 0:28:45Property Two was right on budget and although small inside,
0:28:45 > 0:28:49certainly got Lee excited with its landscaped garden.
0:28:49 > 0:28:53I'd bring the fence in, cut off the neighbours that you've just met!
0:28:53 > 0:28:57And Property Three was a five bedroom delight in lemon and blue,
0:28:57 > 0:29:02with some rather dated brick effects which didn't tickle their fancy!
0:29:02 > 0:29:05So, how will they vote?
0:29:05 > 0:29:07The houses in New Zealand feel too much like caravans,
0:29:07 > 0:29:09so I'm going to say Britain.
0:29:09 > 0:29:13Although the scenery and the location is amazing,
0:29:13 > 0:29:17I have to say the houses are going to take some getting used to,
0:29:17 > 0:29:18so I'm going to say the UK.
0:29:18 > 0:29:21Although the plots are bigger,
0:29:21 > 0:29:23but the actual house itself I'd say...
0:29:23 > 0:29:25UK.
0:29:25 > 0:29:26UK.
0:29:27 > 0:29:31It's the UK on properties, but for the Galloways,
0:29:31 > 0:29:33it's not all just about bricks and mortar.
0:29:33 > 0:29:35Home is where the heart is.
0:29:35 > 0:29:38Although they've been looking for somewhere to live,
0:29:38 > 0:29:42they haven't forgotten who they might be leaving behind.
0:29:42 > 0:29:44Freya is the constant though,
0:29:44 > 0:29:46you know, with me.
0:29:46 > 0:29:49If he can't do it, he can't do it, we don't do it, you know.
0:29:49 > 0:29:50He's the one leaving Freya,
0:29:50 > 0:29:53so at the end of the day the decision is all Lee's.
0:29:53 > 0:29:57Will Lee be able to handle the pressure when he speaks to Freya?
0:29:57 > 0:29:59Missing ya!
0:29:59 > 0:30:00Hey, missing ya!
0:30:00 > 0:30:05And what will happen when the whole family hears from their loved ones?
0:30:05 > 0:30:09I'll miss him too much when he does go, I really will.
0:30:09 > 0:30:13If you do go, I'll miss you and I'll love you lots.
0:30:13 > 0:30:17She's just my world, and I'm going to miss her so much!
0:30:22 > 0:30:27The properties weren't exactly what the Galloways were hoping for.
0:30:27 > 0:30:31In order to afford the home and lifestyle they want,
0:30:31 > 0:30:34Lee will have to find a good job.
0:30:34 > 0:30:37Back in the UK, Lee's an experienced electrician
0:30:37 > 0:30:40and owns a successful business.
0:30:40 > 0:30:42He earns around £24,000 a year.
0:30:42 > 0:30:45It would be a shame to give the business up now,
0:30:45 > 0:30:49like, cos it's been going for three years and it's been good, you know.
0:30:49 > 0:30:54In Australia, we set up a trial day with a firm who specialise
0:30:54 > 0:30:57in installing electrical systems into new apartments.
0:30:57 > 0:31:00Kerry-Marie Calendar is the boss.
0:31:00 > 0:31:03Our company started 20 years ago. He have a staff of 65.
0:31:03 > 0:31:06My husband started in his garage and he's grown from then.
0:31:06 > 0:31:08We're a very family-orientated, happy business.
0:31:08 > 0:31:11We want to fulfil all our customers' needs,
0:31:11 > 0:31:13we're looking forward to meeting you.
0:31:13 > 0:31:15- See you later. See you, babes.- Bye.
0:31:15 > 0:31:19As Lee heads off to work, both he and Karen are aware
0:31:19 > 0:31:21of the importance of the day ahead.
0:31:21 > 0:31:24Everything rides on the job.
0:31:24 > 0:31:27It determines where we go, where we end up.
0:31:27 > 0:31:30That's how we're getting out here, on Lee's trade,
0:31:30 > 0:31:32so yeah, a lot riding on it.
0:31:32 > 0:31:35Yeah, it's a combined thing with Freya and work.
0:31:35 > 0:31:36We can't come over without it,
0:31:36 > 0:31:39it's a lot of points on the immigration forms.
0:31:44 > 0:31:47Lee will have to impress the new boss with his technical skills
0:31:47 > 0:31:49and will want to earn a similar amount
0:31:49 > 0:31:52to the £24,000 he earns in the UK.
0:31:52 > 0:31:55We're going to go and meet the guys here, OK?
0:31:55 > 0:31:58Kerry introduces Lee to Peter and Kevin,
0:31:58 > 0:32:00who are going to show him the ropes.
0:32:00 > 0:32:04- Good luck.- Cheers, thanks very much.- All the best.- Cheers.
0:32:04 > 0:32:06The first job is on a site across town,
0:32:06 > 0:32:09but this job isn't on the scale Lee is used to.
0:32:09 > 0:32:13He has to climb the height of an unfinished skyscraper
0:32:13 > 0:32:15and there's no lift!
0:32:20 > 0:32:24When Lee finally gets to the top it's straight down to business.
0:32:24 > 0:32:27This kind of work is just what Lee is used to,
0:32:27 > 0:32:30but do his colleagues think he's up to the job?
0:32:31 > 0:32:35Yeah, a little bit of a difference installation-wise, work-wise,
0:32:35 > 0:32:37but I think he'll fit right in.
0:32:37 > 0:32:41I mean it's a big change but from what I've seen
0:32:41 > 0:32:42and the lads I've spoken to,
0:32:42 > 0:32:47I'd be quite excited about coming over and working, and starting again somewhere else.
0:32:47 > 0:32:49Lee is desperate to make this job work,
0:32:49 > 0:32:52not just for him, but for his whole family.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54I'll take you through to the board room
0:32:54 > 0:32:56- and go through the induction process.- OK.
0:32:56 > 0:32:58If you'd like to come through.
0:32:58 > 0:33:02He's going in for the most important interview of his life.
0:33:03 > 0:33:06Meanwhile, Karen has taken the kids to the beach.
0:33:06 > 0:33:10This could be the kind of safe environment she's looking for in which to bring them up,
0:33:10 > 0:33:15but thinking of her children makes her think about Freya.
0:33:15 > 0:33:20When we're at home and we do stuff like going to the beach and stuff, Freya's usually always with us,
0:33:20 > 0:33:24so that's something, if it does happen, we'll have to get used to.
0:33:24 > 0:33:26It's not going to just be hard for Lee,
0:33:26 > 0:33:27it will be hard for all of us.
0:33:27 > 0:33:29I mean, the babies idolise her.
0:33:29 > 0:33:32It's just something we're going to have to come to.
0:33:32 > 0:33:33He's going to have to see if he can do it.
0:33:33 > 0:33:35He might not be able to get on the plane.
0:33:35 > 0:33:39He might get so far and then get to the plane and say "No, I can't do it".
0:33:39 > 0:33:41He's saying he can do it at the minute,
0:33:41 > 0:33:44but Freya's coping really well with it at the minute.
0:33:45 > 0:33:49I don't know how Lee's going to react or going to cope with it,
0:33:49 > 0:33:52if Freya breaks down, which, in all fairness, she's going to.
0:33:52 > 0:33:56What will Lee's potential boss make of him?
0:33:56 > 0:33:58What sort of electrical experience have you got?
0:33:58 > 0:34:01Well, I started off originally doing houses,
0:34:01 > 0:34:04just domestic and then moving onto commercial,
0:34:04 > 0:34:10doing like petrol stations, fire work, fire detection, fire alarms,
0:34:10 > 0:34:12mechanical and electrical side of them.
0:34:12 > 0:34:15Interesting - we have got a mechanical side to our business.
0:34:15 > 0:34:18Electrical mechanical is quite specialised experience,
0:34:18 > 0:34:20- it's quite good you've got that experience.- OK.
0:34:20 > 0:34:23Lee wants to know what conditions he might be working under
0:34:23 > 0:34:25and how much he might earn.
0:34:25 > 0:34:27How many hours do electricians do?
0:34:27 > 0:34:29Mainly 40 hours a week.
0:34:29 > 0:34:32The pay rate for an electrician is 25 an hour
0:34:32 > 0:34:36and we do pay time and a half over 40 hours.
0:34:36 > 0:34:38I mean, usually you'd probably say on average,
0:34:38 > 0:34:42I would say electricians bring home between 50 and 60,000.
0:34:42 > 0:34:48Lee could earn around £24,000 a year, about the same as he earns in the UK,
0:34:48 > 0:34:51but did he pass the test?
0:34:51 > 0:34:53As far as going and wiring up apartments,
0:34:53 > 0:34:55he could do it with his eyes closed, basically.
0:34:55 > 0:34:58He's very experienced and he'll be like a duck to water
0:34:58 > 0:35:01as far as the guys are concerned. Definitely fit in very well.
0:35:01 > 0:35:04The problems I was facing coming over here, thinking about it,
0:35:04 > 0:35:09was Freya first and then work was a big one coming second to that,
0:35:09 > 0:35:14but what I've done today, speaking to the lads and going on the job,
0:35:14 > 0:35:16I think I'd be quite excited about coming over.
0:35:16 > 0:35:19I think that's put that to bed, really, that one.
0:35:19 > 0:35:20It's been quite good.
0:35:20 > 0:35:23Top marks all round, so time to vote.
0:35:23 > 0:35:28Thinking about it in the past there's been a couple of issues about me coming over
0:35:28 > 0:35:31and the job was one of them, but today, talking to the lads
0:35:31 > 0:35:34and thinking about coming over, about a change,
0:35:34 > 0:35:38I think my decision would be New Zealand.
0:35:42 > 0:35:47Karen Galloway has always dreamt of a better life in New Zealand
0:35:47 > 0:35:50where the scenery is breathtaking and her children can roam free.
0:35:50 > 0:35:55In my heart of hearts I just think it's the right thing for us as a family to do, I really do.
0:35:55 > 0:35:59I'm just really excited at the minute, I really am!
0:35:59 > 0:36:04But, on our family's very first day down under, disaster struck. Lee was rushed into hospital.
0:36:04 > 0:36:07I don't know where I am, I don't know who to go to.
0:36:07 > 0:36:10I'm literally on my own.
0:36:10 > 0:36:13And the properties didn't impress them, either.
0:36:13 > 0:36:15A bit like our static caravans.
0:36:15 > 0:36:17I'd have to build me own if I was going to come!
0:36:17 > 0:36:21Son, James is far from convinced about the move.
0:36:21 > 0:36:23I expected it to be sunny, but...
0:36:23 > 0:36:26With what we're leaving behind, I don't think we'll gain much.
0:36:26 > 0:36:27In the face of adversity,
0:36:27 > 0:36:30both Lee and Karen are determined to make it work
0:36:30 > 0:36:34but there's still one thing that could put a stop to everything.
0:36:34 > 0:36:37Lee's ten year old daughter would stay in the UK
0:36:37 > 0:36:40and the emotional pull would be massive.
0:36:40 > 0:36:44For Lee, Freya is never far from his thoughts.
0:36:44 > 0:36:46Missing ya.
0:36:46 > 0:36:47Hey, missing ya!
0:36:50 > 0:36:51Torchlight procession?
0:36:51 > 0:36:55On one of the floats? Are ya?
0:36:55 > 0:36:58It might sound like she's just next door,
0:36:58 > 0:37:01but 12,000 miles is a long way away.
0:37:01 > 0:37:03She's in the torchlight procession tonight
0:37:03 > 0:37:07and usually we'd just drive up for it,
0:37:07 > 0:37:10but when she said it was tonight, it was like, "Oh..."
0:37:10 > 0:37:12That's a taste of what it will be like.
0:37:12 > 0:37:15Taking some photos isn't the same as actually being there.
0:37:17 > 0:37:21I mean it might be we love it and the jobs are great
0:37:21 > 0:37:23and the place we live in is great,
0:37:23 > 0:37:27but then I just can't do it with Freya, you know.
0:37:28 > 0:37:31It brings it home to you a bit, you know.
0:37:31 > 0:37:33Lee is missing his daughter,
0:37:33 > 0:37:36but later he'll find out just how much Freya misses him.
0:37:36 > 0:37:38I don't want them to go.
0:37:49 > 0:37:52Lee could find good work in New Zealand,
0:37:52 > 0:37:55but if they're going to afford their dream home,
0:37:55 > 0:37:59the Galloways will need to get a decent price
0:37:59 > 0:38:01for their house back in the UK.
0:38:03 > 0:38:05They own a three bedroom property in Liverpool
0:38:05 > 0:38:09which they bought in 1993 for £58,000.
0:38:09 > 0:38:15They hope it's worth £150,000, but has it held its value?
0:38:15 > 0:38:18We sent round two estate agents to give a more recent valuation
0:38:18 > 0:38:21in the current climate.
0:38:23 > 0:38:25A little dark.
0:38:25 > 0:38:28That's funny them saying about it being dark,
0:38:28 > 0:38:31- because we need to paint it again! - Yeah!
0:38:35 > 0:38:37That's our kitchen.
0:38:37 > 0:38:39It's our kitchen.
0:38:39 > 0:38:43Nice kitchen extension. Light and bright, spared no expense.
0:38:44 > 0:38:46Fully fitted, great.
0:38:52 > 0:38:53My garden!
0:38:53 > 0:38:54It's our garden.
0:38:57 > 0:39:00OK, nice child-friendly garden, lots going on in it.
0:39:00 > 0:39:03It's actually a lot larger than it looks at first.
0:39:03 > 0:39:04It could do with tidying up.
0:39:12 > 0:39:14'Extremely well-done bathroom.'
0:39:14 > 0:39:15Sunken bath'
0:39:15 > 0:39:21His and hers sink units. Small room but very well done.
0:39:23 > 0:39:26I'm going to have a look.
0:39:32 > 0:39:35The parents don't come up here very often!
0:39:35 > 0:39:37Great playroom for them.
0:39:38 > 0:39:41They've spent a lot of money on it, that comes through.
0:39:41 > 0:39:44For a quick sale, £125,000.
0:39:44 > 0:39:46The property's been really well-done.
0:39:46 > 0:39:49It's an exceptionally nice property.
0:39:49 > 0:39:53Looking at around £130,000
0:39:53 > 0:39:56with a quick sale price of around £125,000.
0:39:56 > 0:39:58I thought it was going to be...
0:39:58 > 0:40:01Well, we knew it was about 150,
0:40:01 > 0:40:03- but that was like a while ago, wasn't it?- Yeah.
0:40:03 > 0:40:07The house prices have gone down a bit since we did the extension.
0:40:07 > 0:40:09So...
0:40:10 > 0:40:12It would have been nice, a bit more, eh!
0:40:12 > 0:40:15I think we're better looking at rental really, first,
0:40:15 > 0:40:19but, we'll have to sit down and work out how much exactly
0:40:19 > 0:40:22we're going to be able to afford each month.
0:40:22 > 0:40:27The Galloways hoped for a much better valuation on their home.
0:40:27 > 0:40:31They'll need to take a closer look at their entire finances
0:40:31 > 0:40:33to see if they can afford the move.
0:40:33 > 0:40:37We've prepared a comparison between their living expenses in the UK
0:40:37 > 0:40:40and in New Zealand to find out which leaves them better off.
0:40:40 > 0:40:43After the dramas with Lee's health,
0:40:43 > 0:40:48the Galloways have had first-hand experience of New Zealand's health system.
0:40:49 > 0:40:53Unlike the UK, it's part public and part private,
0:40:53 > 0:40:55so although you don't have to pay for hospital care,
0:40:55 > 0:40:58you do have to pay for a doctor's visit.
0:40:58 > 0:41:03You have to pay for your GP visits over here.
0:41:03 > 0:41:09The hospitals are like the UK, but £25 per GP visit.
0:41:11 > 0:41:14And that's only the beginning.
0:41:14 > 0:41:16Water rates, £50 per month.
0:41:16 > 0:41:18It's 30, so it's dearer.
0:41:19 > 0:41:22Karen and Lee make a detailed assessment of their daily outgoings,
0:41:22 > 0:41:25including their groceries and utility bills.
0:41:25 > 0:41:28They come to an initial grand total.
0:41:28 > 0:41:32It's 530 a month in the UK
0:41:32 > 0:41:37and 330-ish in New Zealand,
0:41:37 > 0:41:41so it's cheaper the New Zealand monthly outgoings, but...
0:41:41 > 0:41:43- You've lost a wage. - You've lost a wage.
0:41:43 > 0:41:48In the UK, Karen earns £6,000 as a part-time healthcare assistant,
0:41:48 > 0:41:51but down under she would have to look after the children
0:41:51 > 0:41:54and wouldn't work initially. There's more bad news.
0:41:54 > 0:41:58Back at home we don't need to fork out for flights
0:41:58 > 0:42:01to and from New Zealand, do we, so that's an extra expense
0:42:01 > 0:42:04that we don't have when we're at home.
0:42:04 > 0:42:06Plus we'd have Freya coming out,
0:42:06 > 0:42:09- we wanted her to come out twice a year.- Someone to bring her.
0:42:09 > 0:42:12- So that's an extra couple of thousand a year, isn't it?- Yep.
0:42:15 > 0:42:17Mmm... Interesting.
0:42:17 > 0:42:22- So we're not coming to New Zealand to make it rich.- Obviously not!
0:42:22 > 0:42:27Karen and Lee wouldn't want to come all this way to live on the breadline.
0:42:27 > 0:42:31Obviously it's going to be a strain if you're going to be struggling.
0:42:31 > 0:42:35If you're struggling. There's a difference between paying everything
0:42:35 > 0:42:38and being comfortable and that and trying to find the money.
0:42:38 > 0:42:40It's going to be stressful anyway.
0:42:43 > 0:42:46We struggled when we first started out.
0:42:46 > 0:42:49It's just what we're going to have to do again, if we do it, if we come.
0:42:49 > 0:42:53Karen and Lee won't go down without a fight.
0:42:53 > 0:42:55It's time to vote on cost of living.
0:42:55 > 0:42:58Do you know what? I was never expecting to come to New Zealand
0:42:58 > 0:43:00and have megabucks.
0:43:00 > 0:43:03We knew it was going to be a struggle.
0:43:03 > 0:43:05And I'm going to say -
0:43:05 > 0:43:08yay, New Zealand!
0:43:08 > 0:43:10It's a vote for New Zealand after all.
0:43:10 > 0:43:13If nothing else, the Galloways are positive thinkers
0:43:13 > 0:43:17and believe they'll be able to adapt their lifestyle to living down under.
0:43:20 > 0:43:22Despite their financial worries,
0:43:22 > 0:43:26Lee and Karen are still determined to make this move work,
0:43:26 > 0:43:30but there may be a sticking point in son James,
0:43:30 > 0:43:33who's still undecided about the move.
0:43:34 > 0:43:39James has a lot to lose with his biological father being in the UK
0:43:39 > 0:43:41and Karen wouldn't go without him.
0:43:41 > 0:43:45James, James, James, it's worrying me, to be honest.
0:43:45 > 0:43:48I can just imagine James saying he's rather stay.
0:43:48 > 0:43:51Yeah, saying I'll stay with me nan. Yeah.
0:43:51 > 0:43:53He's not very impressed, is he?
0:43:53 > 0:43:55I don't think there's that much gained in terms...
0:43:55 > 0:43:58Like to justify the distance we're coming.
0:43:58 > 0:44:02It's the other side of the world and it's not that much better.
0:44:02 > 0:44:05Bring another shell. My thing about getting away...
0:44:05 > 0:44:08- It was for the kids, wasn't it? - It was.
0:44:08 > 0:44:13It started when I had James, so, you know, it all started with James,
0:44:13 > 0:44:15for James, and to eventually get there
0:44:15 > 0:44:18and James not want to come anyway it would be like a bit of a blow.
0:44:20 > 0:44:23Perhaps a blast of the New Zealand outdoors
0:44:23 > 0:44:25will give James a new perspective.
0:44:26 > 0:44:31New Zealand's famous for its stunning landscapes and amazing natural beauty.
0:44:31 > 0:44:34It's the reason many people come to visit and live.
0:44:40 > 0:44:44We've arranged for the Galloways to go on a dolphin watching boat cruise,
0:44:44 > 0:44:46heading west into the Tasman Sea,
0:44:46 > 0:44:49which lies between New Zealand and Australia.
0:44:49 > 0:44:53- That's just gorgeous, isn't it! - Yeah!
0:44:57 > 0:45:01A move down under could give James a brand new start.
0:45:01 > 0:45:04James had a really bad time growing up. He got bullied.
0:45:04 > 0:45:09I just don't think there's any way that James could be on his own without us.
0:45:09 > 0:45:13James's decision could ruin Karen's dreams of moving.
0:45:13 > 0:45:16If I don't like it, I'd have to just, like, tell my mum.
0:45:16 > 0:45:18It's just priorities, really.
0:45:18 > 0:45:22And if I didn't like it anyway, there's not much she can do.
0:45:22 > 0:45:24They're in luck. The dolphins have arrived.
0:45:24 > 0:45:28Dolphins have always been considered porters of good fortune for sailors,
0:45:28 > 0:45:31so could this be a good omen for James?
0:45:31 > 0:45:36Actually a few here now. Harvey's enjoying it as well as me.
0:45:36 > 0:45:40Karen hopes that this trip will help sway his decision to move.
0:45:41 > 0:45:43Gorgeous, isn't it?
0:45:46 > 0:45:49So what does James think about New Zealand, now?
0:45:49 > 0:45:51Well, it's been an experience.
0:45:51 > 0:45:55It's completely different to England and from what I've seen of it,
0:45:55 > 0:45:57I do really like it. It's a bit of a change, like.
0:45:57 > 0:46:02I feel more comfortable with it now than I did before I came over here.
0:46:02 > 0:46:05It's definitely changed my mind a little bit,
0:46:05 > 0:46:09but it's still just like all the stuff I'm leaving behind.
0:46:09 > 0:46:12I'd miss my nan, my dad and all my friends and stuff
0:46:12 > 0:46:14and it's just like the way you've been living,
0:46:14 > 0:46:17it's a part of your past, where you live?
0:46:17 > 0:46:20James isn't the only one, who would find the move hard.
0:46:20 > 0:46:24I will struggle, I know I will. I'm in holiday mode at the minute.
0:46:24 > 0:46:26I'll probably be in holiday mode for the first six months.
0:46:26 > 0:46:28Then when you settle down and it gets normal,
0:46:28 > 0:46:31you miss people and you can't just nip round somewhere.
0:46:31 > 0:46:34But Karen knows if you don't try, you don't succeed.
0:46:34 > 0:46:40I just think it's worth it for the kids to see them thriving.
0:46:40 > 0:46:43When they meet their partners and they have their kids, you know,
0:46:43 > 0:46:45we look at the bigger picture.
0:46:45 > 0:46:48I think it will be beneficial coming over here.
0:46:48 > 0:46:52I think it will be a nicer way of living.
0:46:53 > 0:46:55It's time to vote for lifestyle.
0:46:55 > 0:46:59Obviously, you don't get this in the UK, so I'm going to vote for...
0:46:59 > 0:47:01- New Zealand. - New Zealand.- New Zealand.
0:47:06 > 0:47:13After a shaky start, the Galloways are warming up to the idea of life down under,
0:47:13 > 0:47:17but will hearing messages from friends and family back home
0:47:17 > 0:47:19make the decision even harder?
0:47:19 > 0:47:24Back in the UK, the Galloways have a close-knit network of friends and family,
0:47:24 > 0:47:28but if they move down under, they'd be leaving them all behind.
0:47:28 > 0:47:32We've arranged some messages from their loved ones back home.
0:47:32 > 0:47:37Hello. Hope you're all having a good time.
0:47:37 > 0:47:39If you do go, I'll miss you.
0:47:39 > 0:47:42I couldn't ask for a better son-in-law.
0:47:42 > 0:47:44He's the best dad I've ever known.
0:47:44 > 0:47:49And I know while our Karen's got Lee,
0:47:49 > 0:47:52she'll always be happy.
0:47:55 > 0:47:58My dad's fun because we do lots of fun things together.
0:47:58 > 0:48:05We bake pancakes and we play-fight.
0:48:05 > 0:48:09We go swimming and we go out to the zoo.
0:48:09 > 0:48:14If they do go, then I'd miss Poppy and Harvey
0:48:14 > 0:48:17and Karen and James.
0:48:17 > 0:48:19It's good to have a few brothers and sisters.
0:48:22 > 0:48:24At first when he told me,
0:48:24 > 0:48:26I was a little bit shocked, obviously.
0:48:26 > 0:48:29I'm going to miss him absolutely loads.
0:48:29 > 0:48:32We've grown closer together now than we've ever been, really.
0:48:32 > 0:48:36Now he's got his bike, we spend a lot of time together now.
0:48:36 > 0:48:38We go out on rides and stuff.
0:48:38 > 0:48:41We have got a lot closer since he's got older now.
0:48:41 > 0:48:42You're worried that'll go?
0:48:42 > 0:48:44Yeah. I think that would probably go,
0:48:44 > 0:48:48that would probably fade away when he does go away, yeah.
0:48:48 > 0:48:49I think it will.
0:48:50 > 0:48:52James is me first grandchild
0:48:52 > 0:48:55and there's a special bond there, you know.
0:48:55 > 0:48:56We've always been close.
0:48:56 > 0:49:00The first couple of years he lived with us because, you know,
0:49:00 > 0:49:04Karen didn't have her own home, so he lived in my home.
0:49:04 > 0:49:06Like, Karen, you know, she's my daughter
0:49:06 > 0:49:10and she doesn't want to leave him and she spoke to me about it,
0:49:10 > 0:49:13and she said I'm doing it for the kids, you know.
0:49:13 > 0:49:18James had a bad time in school and she doesn't want the two little ones to go through that.
0:49:18 > 0:49:22It's just going to be so hard, so hard.
0:49:24 > 0:49:26I really don't want them to go.
0:49:31 > 0:49:37I knew they were going to think about going somewhere else.
0:49:37 > 0:49:41Because Harvey and Poppy are only little, they don't know
0:49:41 > 0:49:43that they wouldn't see me again
0:49:43 > 0:49:47and they won't understand, because they're only little as well.
0:49:48 > 0:49:53From a selfish point of view, do you want him to go?
0:49:53 > 0:49:56Not really, no.
0:49:56 > 0:50:00I'll miss him too much when he does go, I really will.
0:50:00 > 0:50:04- Does he know how you feel? - No, not really, no.
0:50:06 > 0:50:08We've not really spoke like that.
0:50:08 > 0:50:11Not really opened up to each other
0:50:11 > 0:50:14and told each other how we feel and stuff, no.
0:50:17 > 0:50:21Our Karen is an angel.
0:50:21 > 0:50:24She's the best daughter anybody could have
0:50:24 > 0:50:26and I'm going to miss her so much.
0:50:28 > 0:50:31She's just my world.
0:50:31 > 0:50:35We're so close, she's always there for me.
0:50:35 > 0:50:37I'm going to have nobody now.
0:50:38 > 0:50:41And I don't think I could do much more than...
0:50:47 > 0:50:50Well, you said that it would be good
0:50:50 > 0:50:54for when I'm older and I want to do college and stuff
0:50:54 > 0:50:59but there is colleges where I live and they're good in Kendal as well
0:50:59 > 0:51:01but, erm...
0:51:04 > 0:51:08I was quite shocked cos I...
0:51:08 > 0:51:11I don't want them to go.
0:51:26 > 0:51:31If it wasn't for everyone that we're leaving behind, we would have done it years ago but...
0:51:33 > 0:51:37It's going to be the hardest thing we've ever done and,
0:51:37 > 0:51:43you know, it might be the worst thing we've ever done, you don't know...
0:51:43 > 0:51:48I can't even...imagine the day we leave, can you?
0:51:48 > 0:51:49No, I can't.
0:51:52 > 0:51:55It's all so easy when you're just talking about it, you know.
0:51:55 > 0:52:01It's when you see all the people you're leaving behind, then you start thinking about it...
0:52:01 > 0:52:03You know, before we'd had a look at it...
0:52:05 > 0:52:06Yeah.
0:52:13 > 0:52:16What about you, James?
0:52:16 > 0:52:20It just makes you think even more how hard it's going to be.
0:52:20 > 0:52:23I've always thought that but seeing that makes it a lot harder.
0:52:23 > 0:52:30We mightn't be able to live with it, we mightn't like it, we might miss people too much.
0:52:30 > 0:52:33You know, when do you do it, when's the right time?
0:52:36 > 0:52:40Me head is just all over the place at the minute after seeing that.
0:52:40 > 0:52:45Seeing messages from loved ones so far away is never easy.
0:52:45 > 0:52:49It's even harder when you're leaving a child behind.
0:52:49 > 0:52:53The Galloways are almost at the end of their week in New Zealand
0:52:53 > 0:52:55and it's nearly decision time.
0:52:55 > 0:53:00Karen Galloway has always been desperate to move to New Zealand, where the outdoor lifestyle
0:53:00 > 0:53:03will provide the perfect setting to bring up her children.
0:53:03 > 0:53:05I just really want to do it.
0:53:05 > 0:53:08Actually, at the minute I'm so excited, I could burst!
0:53:08 > 0:53:12But the introduction to their possible new life started with a scare.
0:53:12 > 0:53:14He's in the hospital.
0:53:15 > 0:53:18I'm literally on my own.
0:53:18 > 0:53:21When it came to finding their dream home, they were far from impressed.
0:53:21 > 0:53:25They're a bit like our static caravans.
0:53:25 > 0:53:28Starting again would be a massive risk.
0:53:28 > 0:53:32Lee knows only too well how much his daughter Freya would miss him
0:53:32 > 0:53:39and seeing messages from family back in the UK has really hit home how hard this decision will be.
0:53:39 > 0:53:43When you see how upset people are, it brings home to you
0:53:43 > 0:53:47how massive a thing it is you're doing and how huge it is
0:53:47 > 0:53:53and how we're going to affect everyone's world. Not just ours, it's everyone you're leaving behind.
0:53:53 > 0:53:58That was a real kick in the face cos being over here and seeing...
0:53:58 > 0:54:02I didn't want to come at first and then I've come here and seen everything
0:54:02 > 0:54:06and that's brought me back down to earth again.
0:54:06 > 0:54:10Watching that video has hit James hard, to be honest.
0:54:11 > 0:54:15Yeah, I think James feels torn, like we all do.
0:54:15 > 0:54:18My head's all over the place at the moment.
0:54:18 > 0:54:23I seem to be the one stuck in the middle of everything so it's quite hard.
0:54:23 > 0:54:27For Lee, the trip has thrown up more questions than answers.
0:54:27 > 0:54:30The Freya side of it, it's never going to be easy
0:54:30 > 0:54:36and I think we've got to sit down and talk a bit more about it,
0:54:36 > 0:54:42not just us as a family but sit down with Freya and discuss... if there's a right time to do it...
0:54:42 > 0:54:46and is she going to cope, or are we going to cope?
0:54:46 > 0:54:49It's not just Lee that's losing Freya, it's all of us.
0:54:49 > 0:54:55She's been in my life since she was a babe in arms and it'll be a wrench for all of us.
0:54:55 > 0:55:00The kids idolise her and I don't know how anyone is going to cope
0:55:00 > 0:55:06with the guilt of leaving her. We don't know how she's going to cope with it.
0:55:06 > 0:55:11If we see her break down, do we get to the airport and say, "No, we can't do it," and come back?
0:55:11 > 0:55:15But it's time for the Galloways to make their final decision.
0:55:15 > 0:55:20It's the hardest thing, the biggest upheaval we're ever going to do
0:55:20 > 0:55:24and I just hope that everyone can cope with it,
0:55:24 > 0:55:29but I think it's the right thing to do and I'm going to go for New Zealand.
0:55:29 > 0:55:33I'm still weighing it up, but I'm going to give it a go. New Zealand.
0:55:33 > 0:55:39Before I came, I had more...concerns than I do now.
0:55:39 > 0:55:45I think I could quite easily settle here and I'm going to say New Zealand.
0:55:45 > 0:55:48New Zealand.
0:55:48 > 0:55:50The Galloways have experienced
0:55:50 > 0:55:54how traumatic moving to another country can be.
0:55:54 > 0:55:56They've made a brave decision
0:55:56 > 0:56:01and we wish them all the very best with their new life in New Zealand.
0:56:01 > 0:56:05Join us next time when another British family have to decide
0:56:05 > 0:56:07whether they're Wanted Down Under.
